E D I TO R ' S L E T T E R An editor’s letter – what is it and why do people read it before starting to turn the pages of the maga ine? There are probably two responses to that First, would be to review the contents of the maga ine and second, the editor’s opinions on different subjects, either included in the given issue or completely standalone. Today’s letter of mine will not be too detached from the anniversary issue of EGO, the greater part of which is dedicated to the 2015 winners of the annual EGO AWARDS ceremony, however, all of this once again leads us to the idea of success and there emerges uestion, as to what is success? I think, my own take on the situation I am about to describe below, relates to and describes each of the winning persons or company e ually. I couldn’t pay special attention to any particular nomination, because each of them do huge and valuable job in their own fields, and the goal is the same for all of them. I am certain that notwithstanding the country in which they currently work, it is e ually important for all that the job they do serves the success and well-being of their country. After that, we can touch upon other goals as well, although, there is only one truth for me, the primary goal should always be self-development, because if you don’t gain strength and do not manage to develop yourself to a certain level, then you will not be able to serve either your country or those surrounding you.

And achieving goals takes a huge toll. ook at any of the EGO AWARDS winners and you will see that if it were not for the tireless labour, determination, dealing with the commitments and responsibilities, love towards their job, patriotism and a lot more, these people would not have been able to talk to you from the pages of EGO aga ine. Another important factor for achieving success is the trust gifted by people, as well as love and positive emotions, which always help empower and nudge you to always walk ahead, to reach higher and higher, without ever stopping, keeping your chin up, to overcome all the obstacles and con uer the peaks you dream about.

How did your rst contact with music occur?
როგორ მოხდა თქვენი პირველი შეხება მუსიკასთან?
y father had an immense influence on me in this regard. He would often offer me to listen to his favourite musicians - Beniamino Gigli and ario an a. y first ever role was awarded to me in the A. Virsalad e Art School. At the time, performing on the stage of Philharmonic was considered a great achievement. I remember, each of my performances was accompanied with huge joy and the more spectators I had the happier I was.
უდიდესი გავლენა ჩემზე მამამ იქონია, რომელიც ხშირად მასმენინებდა საყვარელი მომღერლების, ბენიამინო ჯილისა და მარიო ლანცას ფირფიტებს. პირველი მთავარი როლი ა. ვირსალაძის სახელობის ხელოვნების სკოლაში მომცეს. იმ დროს ფილარმონიის სცენაზე დგომა დიდ მიღწევად ითვლებოდა. მახსოვს, რომ ყოველ გამოსვლას ჩემთვის ძალიან დიდი სიხარული ახლდა და რაც უფრო მეტი მაყურებელი მყავდა, მით უფრო მიხაროდა.
Do you think that in art the major problem is the de cit of sincerity?
ფიქრობთ, რომ შემოქმედებაში მთავარი პრობლემა გულწრფელობის დეფიციტია?
I think that not only in music, but generally, in life, the lack of sincerity is a problem and first and foremost towards your own self. An insincere person on a stage could never be successful. A stage is a place where radiography happens and the spectators see everything. If the sound is not being born through sincere emotions, you cannot touch the strings in the hearts of the spectators.
ვფიქრობ, რომ არა მარტო მუსიკაში, არამედ ზოგადად, ცხოვრებაში გულწრფელობის არქონაა პრობლემა და პირველ რიგში, საკუთარი თავის მიმართ. სცენაზე არაგულწრფელი ადამიანი შეუძლებელია, იყოს წარმატებული. სცენა ისეთი ადგილია, სადაც რადიოგრაფია კეთდება და მაყურებელი ხედავს ყველაფერს. ხმა თუ არ იბადება გულწრფელი ემოციით, მაყურებლის გულებში სიმებს ვერ შეარხევ.
If you didn’t have a singer’s talent, you would be… I have never thought about it, but I wouldn’t refuse to in movie industry. A movie is a huge emotion built around the tiniest of nuances.

Not long ago, on the 201 EGO Magazine award ceremony people nominated you the powerful and tasteful woman of the year. What do you think, do people love strong women in Georgia?
ცოტახნის წინ, ჟურნალ ეგოს 201 წლის დაჯილდოების ცერემონიაზე ხალხმა დაგასახელათ წლის ძლიერ და გემოვნებიან ქალად. როგორ ფიქრობთ, საქართველოში უყვართ ძლიერი ქალები?
I couldn’t say how much the strong women are loved, however, they certainly are respected.
არ ვიცი, ძლიერი ქალი რამდენად უყვართ, მაგრამ ყოველ შემთხვევაში, პატივს სცემენ.
Low uality music is like Indian TV series, everybody badmouths it, but they still listen. What do you think is the reason behind it? We have not yet managed to re ne our taste or the widespread opinions of the public scare us?
უხარისხო მუსიკა ინდური სერიალივითაა, ყველა უკმაყოფილებას გამოთქვამს და მაინც ყველა უსმენს. როგორ ფიქრობთ, რატომ ხდება ასე? ჯერ გემოვნება არ ჩამოგვყალიბებია, თუ ფართოდ მიღებული საზოგადოებრივი აზრი გვაშინებს?
I think tasteless music also has a right to exist. However, I still think that eventually the musical taste should be refined and for this to happen, there should exist constructive criticism. By the way, there is a character in the animated film Ratatouille called Ego, who is a food critic. Everybody is afraid of him, because his competent opinion changes a lot of things. Ego is an expert and we are definitely in need of such Egos.
ვფიქრობ, უგემოვნო მუსიკასაც აქვს არსებობის უფლება. თუმცა, ჩემი აზრით, საბოლოოდ, მუსიკალური გემოვნება უნდა დაიხვეწოს. ამისთვის კი უნდა არსებობდეს ჯანსაღი კრიტიკა. სხვათაშორის, „ეგოზე“ გამახსენდა – მულტიპლიკაციურ ფილმში „რატატუი“ არის ასეთი პერსონაჟი – კრიტიკოსი ეგო, რომლისაც ყველას ეშინია, რადგან მისი კომპეტენტური აზრი ბევრ რამეს ცვლის. „ეგო“ ქსპერტია, ჩვენ კი ასეთი ეგოები გვჭირდება.
How do you perceive the notion person?

It doesn’t mean you can do whatever idea crosses your mind. On the contrary, it entails an enormous responsibility. In a way, it is a frame as well, where you are to never cross the boundaries of other people’s freedom. And upon all, freedom is a fight against one’s own self. Lately, discussing se and religion have become uite topical. Why do you think that is? Is it because we Georgians are competent in both or on the contrary, we are facing de cit? Today they openly discuss these issues in Georgia, because the period that Europe went through several decades ago, has just arrived to Georgia. It is a wave, bound to just pass at some point. As far as religion is concerned, it has always been a topic of discussion in Georgia. How does faith differ from religion? Or do you consider them to be identical? I think without religion people exist, however, without faith it is hard to exist. Upon meeting God, what would you have sung to him? During a deafening applause, a singer bows to the audience. considered by many to be attained only through their efforts and tend to often forget that it is gift of god. If I ever met god, I would have sung Ave aria to him. Are all means approved for achieving success? Each person has their own measures as to what is permissible, however, as they say, the winners are then never judged. For me, it is important that a person leads their life, so as to not lose respect to themselves. Does being a celebrity mean being successful? ertainly not. Being famous in no way means being successful, however, being popular in life helps you make the following moves. If we take a look at the recent history of Georgia, what are the things that make the citizen, Nino Surguladze, the most proud and the most ashamed? I am ashamed of the period when Georgians were informing on each other. I don’t want the year 19 7 of the past century to ever make a comeback. And I was the most proud, when I saw Georgians come out and extend a helping hand to those in need as a result of the 2015 flooding. I still believe that the darkness will never catch up with the light. Do you have any ritual for before going up on a stage?

An interview for those who nd both sides of a medallion interesting. It is already a second year that EGO awarded you a title of the best businessman of the year. How do you view your work yourself? Is it a source of nancial income or the interest of life? First of all, I would like to thank EGO for this. It is a huge stimulus not only for me, but for my whole team as well. I did not expect to receive this pri e neither last nor this year. Achieving success is not all that easy in our country and such recognition gives us more motivation to contribute to building our country by laying at least one brick. How does your ordinary business day begin? Both business days and day-offs start similarly since my childhood – with at least an hour and a half of exercise. I was six years old when my father entered me in a class of water-polo and since then, exercise has been an inseparable part of my life, which in turn fills me with a lot of energy. What is it that you regret spending time on? The time that brings virtually no benefit to either my country, myself or my family. It might come out as too much of a statement, but a businessman values time ever so differently – time is the most expensive asset. Without what can you not imagine your day? I cannot imagine even a single of my conscious days without my large family. I am a father to five children. If it were not for the family, nothing would really matter in my life.

In your business reality, what kind of day do you consider a successful one? When we make effective business deals, or plan and commence with an innovative product. Half of my time in the company goes to implementing exactly those innovative products. Wissol Group unites ten different brands and includes not only almost all the sectors of energy, but also construction, advertising, supermarkets and fast food restaurant business. Without innovations, handling the business of such magnitude is practically unbelievable for me. Not a week passes by without new ideas. How much time do you allocate to social networks during a day? ust a couple minutes, mostly in the evening. Social networks are definitely not one of my weak points. To tell you the truth, I really don’t have time for that. I get more than enough information from press and books. What is the role of a woman in a man’s success? A very big one. I do everything I can for my family and this just goes to show you what I mean. What is the necessary characteristic feature that a successful person should have? ou have to be determined and have enormous willpower. ou have to be detail-oriented and a true diplomat in relationships. These are the necessary characteristics that allow you to establish yourself both in the world of business and society as well. But probably luck is necessary too… Naturally, but God helps exactly the type of people who work a lot. Obviously, nothing would ever work out if we depended just on luck. It is important to be in a right place at the right time. However, if we think about it and look at it somewhat philosophically, the unity of the above-listed characteristic features is what creates luck. But the main thing is still love – if you don’t love your job, nothing will ever work out. I love my job and that is the main secret of success. What can stress you the most during a day? The problems are plenty in our society and the countries like ours. There certainly is going to be a problem that will naturally hurt you, but I have developed one skill that helps me a lot. Facing the problem I never make a hasty decision when agitated and however surprising it might sound, they tend to resolve themselves

in a couple of days. ust like anger, success needs to be correctly managed… ears of experience have taught me this. The years of your early youth coincide with the hard period of the history of Georgia. The majority from your generation did not manage to self actualize mostly due to this. What was the major factor that determined your success as opposed to others from your generation? Education has determined a lot of things in my life. I was always trying to create a type of subcultural environment around me and it was exactly this kind of environment that afforded me all the possibilities to deal with the problems that were so prevalent in the 90s. It was exactly in the 90s that we entered the market with the business of oil products. The sector was completely corrupt at the time, the market was flooded with vast amounts of contraband, and as a result, it was hard to navigate through. We had set one task for ourselves, which also takes origin in education, we had to do business always legally. In the beginning of the 90s, the definition of doing business legally was strange to probably 90% of businessmen or the nonbusinessmen. Even though the share of contraband fuel was reaching 70% of the total supply in the country, we still managed not to dirty our hands. That is what determined our success. Have you ever faced a collapse? Of course there are ups and downs in life, but we are still trying to maintain stability. Stability is e ually necessary both in times of success and failure. At what time does your business day nish? There is a lot to be done and I really cannot manage to return home at 7 o’clock. I spend most of my Sundays with the family. It brings me enormous joy. If your child had to pay the price of overcoming the obstacles that you did in order to achieve the same success as you, would you have advised him to follow that path? First of all, I wouldn’t want it for my son or any other citi en of Georgia for that matter to relive the 90s. God forbid that should happen again. But otherwise, of course I would have advised. We come to this world once and have to put in the maximum effort. No person has a right to lose even a single day in expectation of better years. One thing is certain, in order to win a war, you need to first win the battles.

How do you view age? Ever since my student years, I have been viewing age as a mere step in the timeline of my life, where each specific number denoted the last date of any particular achievement. Following this regiment and due to this haste, I made a number of mistakes, which could have been easily avoided if I didn’t envision life as one big project. Now I consider that age doesn’t matter as much as does awareness and the scale of one’s goals. The desire to achieve everything quickly can be a good stimulus, but at the same time it can serve as an obstacle, because it won’t allow us to enjoy the small things in life, for which it is worth living. Tell us something… On the very stage, where I have been awarded EGO prize, not a month before, my 7-year-old daughter danced
a ballet number of Harlequin in Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. By the end of the performance, I handed her flowers in appreciation. This is one of the things I meant in the above-mentioned small things in life.

In this issue of EGO, we talk a lot about the winners of EGO AWARDS, however, I think this nomination was particularly interesting and exciting. After all, selecting the project of the year is no ordinary matter. The prize in this nomination was awarded to TV series – Tiflis. Notwithstanding the fact that several of the very successful projects had been nominated, we think you would agree that Tiflis deserved to win this title by all extents. The TV series portray the alternative history of Tbilisi using fictional characters and stories, complete with clans of noblemen, fight against the system, repressions, Siberia… Tiflis tells us stories characteristic to Tbilisi, which are all too familiar and painful for our city. TV series aired in 2014 and was limited to mere two seasons and 18 episodes. Tiflis managed to win the hearts of the viewers right from the beginning. It should also be mentioned, that the series attracted diverse segments of audience to the screens. There are a multitude of reasons behind it, but the major one has to be the fact that Tiflis is an innovation in Georgian movie and TV fields. It managed to secure a new niche, a specific place for itself. In a way, the project also raised the bar, since the pampered viewers are now bound to be more demanding and frown upon anything that is of lesser quality. A number of big and small details determined the success of the series, which resulted in the project of the year (most probably, not limited to just this one year). The first mention definitely goes to music, which perfectly suits the Georgian character and Tbilisi of the 19th century. The costumes

designed specifically for this show transferred the viewers a hundred years back from the very first minutes and set the appropriate mood, made it all visually appealing. The director’s and cinematographer’s work was innovative as well: the new vision and at one glance, strangely selected angles, made the characters and the plot far more interesting. The dynamic progression of the plot is also significant, which in turn results in holding the viewers in constant suspense and the viewing experience never gets boring. One of the most important details is still the precise casting of actors who best suit their characters and manage to masterfully portray the residents of old Tbilisi.

Tiflis made its mark beyond the camera lens as well. During the two seasons that it ran, a lot of people had a chance to work on a high-quality project such as this, and in the meantime, learn, do the job they love, develop and plan some new projects. Among them were over 400 actors and actresses, screenwriters, cameramen, designers, editors, graphic designers and many more, as a result of whose work, a huge leap has been made in the movie and TV industry of Georgia.

How was the idea for the show born? Temo Mzhavia: By the way, initially, Bera was the one who had the idea for this sort of show. He showed us some French show and said he wanted to do something similar to it. Since then, quite some time passed and the whole thing was forgotten. When we decided to create a show, I remembered Bera’s idea. We borrowed some of the elements from other shows, we added some of our own and eventually, ended up with a show which has practically no match in the entire post-Soviet space. Levanika Gogoreliani: Russians also did a similar show recently. All the action is unraveled in an apartment there too. They also have games, but with much more guests. For “Apartment 18” they would have needed a license and our ideas don’t come cheap.

Temo Mzhavia: Initially, Kotiko Toloraia was the host. I was then only a producer. Levanika Gogoreliani: Since Kotiko left, Temo is both a host and an executive producer as well. What determined such a success of the show? Temo Mzhavia: One thing I can say for sure, is that it was determined by a very flexible and talented host. And by this I mean Pako. Levanika Gogoreliani: I have nothing to do with it. It was all determined by Nini. Nini Gogichaishvili: No, all the credit goes to Temo. I think that the reason for our success is that our show is an innovation all throughout Georgian airwaves and has practically no competition. “Apartment 18” is different from all the other shows and most importantly, it is politically indifferent. Levanika Gogoreliani: We are the first to offer games in a show. There is no other comedy show in Georgia that is completely free of politics. The name “Apartment 18” was in fact selected to add the homey, cozy touch to its essence. Nothing is ever recorded ahead of time with a guest. Nini, how did you adapt to each other? Has it been tough on you initially to work together with them? Nini Gogichaishvili: Like I always say, there are good professionals working in our TV station and the environment is very comfortable. We are one big family. We understand each other pretty well. I love both Temo and Pako a lot. I am happy to have been given an opportunity to work with them. In fact, the outcome of our working together is a fine indicator that we are really good together. Just like the viewers get to see us in the show, that is exactly how we are in reality, if not even closer. Are there any future plans for the show? Temo Mzhavia: Most certainly. We are reinforced with future plans. Georgia is not enough for us and we want to expand. This holds true specifically for our show. Bera helps us in that a lot. When Nash was visiting him, we invited them to guest our show. The video was then shared by several American websites. Levanika Gogoreliani: The best thing about it was that they had transcribed the jokes an Americans were ‘cracking up’ on Temo’s jokes. პერიოდულად ვიწყებ ახალი სურვილებისა და ჩანაფიქრების ჩამოწერას და შემდეგ ასრულებას. კარგად მახსოვს ყოველი ადამიანი, რომელსაც ვხვდები ერთხელ მაინც. კაცობრიობა ყოველთვის... ზედმეტად ფილოსოფიური კითხვაა. ჩემი ცხოვრების საუნდრეკია – on’t you worry about the thing. ყველაზე კარგად ჩემს ბიოგრაფიას დაწერდა ჩემი და, ირინკა. ჩემთვის მისაბაძია ბევრი კეთილი და თავმდაბალი ადამიანი ჩემს გარშემო. არ ვიტყოდი უარს, მქონდეს დამატებითი 10 საათი დღის განმავლობაში. ჩემთვის საუკეთესო დროა დილა და გვიანი ღამე. ყველაზე მეტად თბილისში მიყვარს მისი უნიკალურობა. რა იქნება შემდეგ? არასდროს ვიცი, რა იქნება შემდეგ, თუმცა მჯერა, რომ არასდროს მომბეზრდება საკუთარი თავისგან მეტის მოთხოვნა.

Training courses also include practical activities, which gives them good opportunity to use their skills and find out what it really looks like to be in the particular field of work. ’ ippo fund gave me more than I expected. Training sessions that are held today are almost alike. Main reason people are attending trainings are certificates, trainers usually choose same course and the way they deliver are very similllar in nature. For me, ippo Fund managed to brake down these stereotypes and became the place where I learned and experienced more than I thought it was possible in a single training course. ere students have an opprtunity to meet with founders, executives and specialists of Georgias most succesful companies. It is a good chance for every student to listen and experience the practical steps these people had to take for their companies to become succesful. After hearing all these, you become excited with their abilities, you become more motivated, feel their support and most important, you realize how much this or that profession is interesting for you. -Natia Bendeliani Through the whole part of the course, with many other areas of the course, the participants will learn project planning, implementation and management principles properly packing ideas and strategies to find funding sources. As a result, the training graduates will develop the skills to work independently and to implement their own projects In addition, It should be noted that the ypo Fund offers successful students an internship in the foundation. ’Training course organized by the Foundation of ypo pretty much changed my life. n my first day in the Foundation I met wonderful people who were trying to use all the resources in order for the group to receive the best possible experience. Fortunately, my and ypo Foundation’s story did not end with just that. uring my internship I was given an opportunity to participate in a number of projects, I became a member of the team, which I liked the whole training period and besides the work experience the course gave me the most important thing - good friends. ’ - Gvanca Lezhava Now the foundation is carrying out one of the important projects that are focused on children who need support. As the founder of the Fund has noted in our conversation, the most important probem facing these childre is that they don’t have opportunity to receive appropriate educaiton. ’As children become adults, they get various challenges to settle in society, which is hardly possible without getting proper education. The project wont be of a single character. uring 3 months, once in a week, discussion will be conducted by volunteers, regarding the books given to the children. Teens will have their own opinions on these issues and discuss thouroughly authors view on specific subjects. As a result, homeless children will be actively involved in the learning process moreover, at a later stage of the project is planned to hire tutors, who will prepare them for the state exams In addition, experienced professionals, will provide children with all the necessary information, which is necessary for them to further decide which professions they prefer and how to become professionals in their chosen field.
პირველ ეტაპზე, თბილისის „ჰიპო ფონდმა“ აარჩია რამდენიმე მცირე საოჯახო ტიპის სახლი, რომელსაც ამარაგებს წიგნებით შეიქმნება მცირე ბიბლიოთეკებიც. რამდენიმე არჩეულ ბავშვთა სახლში საერთოდ არ არსებობს ბიბლიოთეკა და თუ არსებობს, მათში არსებული წიგნების მარაგი ძალიან მწირია. პროექტს არ ექნება ერთჯერადი ხასიათი. 3 თვის განმავლობაში, თვეში 2-ჯერ, საოჯახო ტიპის სახლებში მოეწყობა წაკითხული წიგნების გარჩევა და დისკუსია. მოზარდებს მოუწევთ აღნიშნულ საკითხებზე თავიანთი მოსაზრებების დაფიქსირება და მსჯელობა. შედეგად, მზრუნველობას მოკლებული ბავშვები აქტიურად ჩაერთვებიან სასწავლო პროცესში. პროექტის შემდგომ ეტაპზე კი იგეგმება რეპეტიტორების დაქირავება, რომლებიც ბავშვებს მოამზადებენ ერთიანი ეროვნული გამოცდებისთვის. ამასთან, გამოცდილი სპეციალისტები, მათ მიაწვდიან ყველა საჭირო ინფორმაციას, რაც აუცილებელია მათთვის საინტერესო პროფესიის დასაუფლებლად.

I think that when tasting a dish, a person should experience some sort of experience. If it doesn’t occur, it means a chef hasn’t achieved the goal. W hat i s your op i ni on on the future i f res taurant bus i nes s i n G eorg i a? In Georgia the restaurant business is in a better condition than it used to be several years ago. owever, we are still very far from European and American standards. This holds true both for the service and the cuisine itself. The major problem, to my mind, is the scarcity and low quality of the produce on the market. The tax law is also incoherent, which prevents restaurateurs to do business. I hope these gaps will soon be filled.

wo professions and a childhood dream that came true years later. t is true that he had to graduate from conservatoire twice, but the main thing is that the goal is achieved. A boy born to a family of musicians, put clarinet and saxophone aside to dedicate his life to singing opera. otwithstanding numerous obstacles on the way, today he is a permanent soloist of ienna State Opera. He is the only tenor who can perform Donizetti and Bellini operas in a full register. He has a wife, eti Sotkilava and a -yar-old boy, evaniko. Shalva Mukeria, a tenor, is the guest of this E O Magazine column.

Music is a well-established line of work in your family. You were brought up in a family of musicians. Do you remember what you used to dream about in your childhood? I remember my childhood years pretty well. My father was a professor and used to play in a theatre, and mother was signing in a choir for q uite a long time. My parents were the representatives of a generation that created an era of music in Tbilisi. J ansugh Kak hidze and B idzina Kvernadze were my father’s classmates. They would often guest our family. At the age of 7 , I used to listen to I talian variety art. The Great Waltz by Miliza Korjus was a huge deal for me. I watched her and imagined myself on a big stage.
მუსიკა თქვენი ოჯახის თანმდევი ხაზია. მუსიკოსების ოჯახში გაიზარდეთ. რაზე ოცნებობდით ბავშვობაში? ბავშვობის წლები ყველაზე კარგად მახსენდება. მამა პროფესორი იყო, თეატრში უკრავდა, დედა საკმაოდ დიდხანს გუნდში მღეროდა. ჩემი მშობლები იმ თაობის წარმომადგენლები იყვნენ, რომელმაც თბილისში მუსიკალური ეპოქა შექმნა. ჯანსუღ კახიძე და ბიძინა კვერნაძე მამას კლასელები იყვნენ. ისინი ხშირად სტუმრობდნენ ჩვენს ოჯახს. 7 წლის ასაკში ვუსმენდი იტალიურ ესტრადას. მილიცა კორიუსის დიდი ვალსი ჩემთვის მოვლენა იყო. ვუყურებდი და წარმოვიდგენდი ხოლმე საკუთარ თავს დიდ სცენაზე.
Mr. Mukeria, how did you come to choose this profession? I was about 5 or 6 years old. I t is a period when a child’s memory retains vast amounts of information. Ever since this age, it was my desire to become a singer. I couldn’t bring myself to reveal the plan to my parents. I was born on Pik ris Gora, I used to often go out to play, I would climb a tree and sing by myself. When I grew up a little, the parents entered me in a music school. My father wanted me to play a trumpet, but for some reason or another, they later chose a clarinet and I entered a ten- year course for the talented. Eventually, I graduated from the conservatoire with a k nowledge of clarinet and sax ophone. H owever, as it later turned out, the process of choosing my profession did not end there. L ife gifted me what I had been dreaming about for q uite some time before. Could you then imagine that after years you would have become such a successful tenor? I t is hard to say that I would have imagined achieving such a success years ago, but I would not be lying if I said that I believed I would definitely do what my heart truly

desired. Constant thinking about it and the drive to achieve my goals took me away from Georgia. It did actually work out, my plans got realized. The goal is achieved. From clarinet to an opera singer – what road did the famous tenor have to go? I never walked a path of a singer. Initially, I started studying in a ten-year course for the talented, afterwards I graduated from Tbilisi conservatoire, simultaneously, I was being tutored by Nodar Andghuladze and I was working on my voice on a daily basis. After that, I had to move from Georgia to Odessa, where I graduated from conservatoire but with a completely different profile. It was the time I realized that I had to do in life what I wanted to do. I put clarinet aside and dedicated my entire life to singing. It was not so easy to start everything over, especially in the beginning of the 90s, but I do believe that what your heart truly desires, will definitely work out. The first part you performed on a big stage? It was from Donizetti’s opera The Elixir of Love. I remember very well, I sang Nemorino’s part. I had a diploma defense. It was my first serious contact with opera. I was extremely nervous, however, it was still immensely pleasant for me to stand on the stage. How busy are you with performances during a year? Life of an opera singer is quite difficult. I am very busy. I have to perform in 4 to 8 performances a month. The

preparation period in itself is pretty tiresome. Each month I have to travel to different countries: in Italy, France, Germany, Japan, US. I am particularly busy in Italy and in a way, I am proud of it, since Italy is a birthplace of our profession and it is a great honour for me to sing there. What is that one thing you will never forget? I will never forget my first meeting with my teacher in Odessa and the very first lessons that determined my future career life. If not an opera singer, who would Shalva Mukeria be? It is hard for me to say, since without singing and without my profession I cannot imagine my life. Years ago, Anzor Erkomaishvili invited me to ensemble Rustavi. I left it 2 months later. I realized that only classical music was my true calling. On a stage, I often have to act. If I were not an opera singer, I probably would have been an actor. I remember once my mother and I happened upon Rezo Chkheidze in the street and when he saw me, he liked me and told my mother he was shooting a movie The Saplings and invited me on tryouts. Unfortunately, I didn’t dare go to the casting. Your first critic? Fortunately, I had such teachers and they brought me up in such a way that nowadays, nobody knows me better than I do myself. I know exactly what mistakes I make during a performance, as well as feel what I could have

ამის შემდეგ უკვე მომიწია საქართველოდან წასვლა, ოდესაში, სადაც ხელმეორედ, ოღონდ სულ სხვა პროფილით დავამთავრე კონსერვატორია. მაშინ მივხვდი, რომ უნდა მეკეთებინა ის, რაც მინდოდა. გადავდე კლარნეტი და მთელი ჩემი ცხოვრება მივუძღვენი სიმღერას. 90-იანი წლების დასაწყისში არ იყო მარტივი ამ ყველაფრის თავიდან დაწყება, თუმცა მჯერა, რაც გულით გინდა, აუცილებლად გამოვა. პირველი პარტია, რომელიც დიდ სცენაზე შეასრულეთ... ეს იყო დონიცეტის ოპერიდან – „სიყვარულის ნექტარი“. კარგად მახსოვს, ნემორინოს პარტია შევასრულე. დიპლომის დაცვა მქონდა. ეს იყო ჩემი პირველი სერიოზული შეხება ოპერასთან. ძალიან ვნერვიულობდი. ამ ყველაფრის მიუხედავად, ჩემთვის დიდი სიამოვნება იყო სცენაზე დგომა. რამდენად დატვირთული ხართ წლის განმავლობაში სპექტაკლებით? ოპერის მომღერლის ცხოვრება საკმაოდ რთულია. ძალიან დატვირთული ვარ. თვეში 4-დან 8 სპექტაკლში ვმონაწილეობ. მომზადების პერიოდი საკმაოდ დამღლელია. ყოველთვიურად სხვადასხვა ქვეყანაში მიწევს მოგზაურობა: იტალიაში, საფრანგეთში, გერმანიაში, იაპონიაში, ამერიკაში... განსაკუთრებით დატვირთული ვარ იტალიაში და მეამაყება კიდეც, რადგან სწორედ იტალიაა ყველაზე მნიშვნელოვანი ქვეყანა ჩვენი პროფესიისთვის. ჩემთვის დიდი პატივია იქ სიმღერა. ის, რაც არასდროს დაგავიწყდებათ... არასდროს დამავიწყდება პირველი შეხვედრა ჩემს

Two tenors in one family – what is an ordinary day like in the Mukeria-Sotkilava family? Due to our profession, on large family gatherings we often discuss our work . I live in Madrid with my wife Keti and our son L evanik o. L evan entered a school in Madrid beginning this September. The family usually gathers on holidays. We often ask each other for opinion. I cannot really say that I give a lot of advice to Mr. Sotk ilava, but we do ex change ideas. We engage in a free dialogue. Where there is no dialogue, there is no growth either. Our dialogue is a healthy one. When you are an opera singer, you have to not only provide for the vocal part, but also for the musical and acting side of the performance. I t bears enormous significance. The voice has to tell me what part to sing and not the other way around. When you start to practice, you work with the throat and the diaphragm. A healthy lifestyle and a daily regimen – these are the integral parts of our profession. Y ou have to always be in shape. We have already learned that you often travel to different countries of the world. Whom would you distinguish from your partners on stage? I simply love singing with two great ladies. These are: Edita Gruberová and Mariella Devia. We have sang together on numerous occasions. They are representatives of older generation. Your future plans? As usual, I want to enrich my repertoire. At this stage, I really want to sing Donizetti’s The F avorite. I think this opera is well suited to my voice. I have been offered to perform in The Pirate, by B ellini. I am preparing for William Tell, by Rossini. F or now, these are my plans, for which I req uired a little more time than usual. I am a permanent soloist at the V ienna State Opera, the pride of I talian theatres. I don’t think I should be putting out roles, as a factory produces chocolate bars. I walk side- by- side with time.

თბილისის განახლებული ოპერისა და ბალეტის სახელმწიფო თეატრი ოპერა „აბესალომ და ეთერის“ პრემიერით, იანვარს, საზეიმოდ გაიხსნა. ქართველი მაყურებელი ექვსი წლის განმავლობაში ელოდა ისტორიული შენობის რეაბილიტაციას თუმცა, ლოდინი ნამდვილად ღირდა: განახლდა თეატრის ტექნიკური აღჭურვილობა, რესტავრაცია ჩაუტარდა უნიკალურ -სანთლიან ჭაღს, სცენაზე დაბრუნდა თეატრის სავიზიტო ბარათის – სერგო ქობულაძის ფარდის პრინტი, გაიხსნა ახალი საგამოფენო სივრცე... თუმცა, გარდა შენობის რეაბილიტაციისა, თეატრში უამრავი საინტერესო სიახლეა, რაც ოპერისა და ბალეტის მოყვარულებს ნამდვილად გაახარებთ.

C U LT U R E rom March, two new initiatives have been launched: “ My Tick et in Opera” and “ Students’ Tick et” , which offers special discount to spectators. Within the “ My Tick et in Opera” promotion, anybody can buy one or two opera and ballet performance tick ets on a season for just 10, 15, 20, 25 GEL , which will mak e a visit to Opera and B allet Theatre more affordable for spectators.
მარტის თვეში ამოქმედდა ორი ახალი ინიციატივა – „ჩემი ბილეთი ოპერაში“ და „სტუდენტური ბილეთი“, რომლებიც მაყურებლებს სპეციალურ ფასდაკლებას სთავაზობს. „ჩემი ბილეთი ოპერაში“ აქციის ფარგლებში ნებისმიერ მსურველს სეზონზე ერთი ან ორი საოპერო და საბალეტო სპექტაკლის ბილეთების შეძენა შეუძლია, მხოლოდ 10,15, 20, 25 ლარად, რაც უფრო ხელმისაწვდომს გახდის მაყურებლისთვის ოპერისა და ბალეტის თეატრში სტუმრობას. „სტუდენტური ბილეთით“ სარგებლობა კი ქვეყნის ყველა უმაღლესი სასწავლებლის სტუდენტს შეუძლია. ამ ინიციატივის ფარგლებში ბილეთების ფასი 5, 7, ხოლო პრემიერებზე – 10 ლარია. ბილეთების შესაძენად სტუდენტმა ოპერის სალაროში სტუდენტური ბილეთი და პირადობის დამადასტურებელი მოწმობა უნდა წარადგინოს. აქციის ინიციატორები თვლიან, რომ ეს წამოწყება ხელს შეუწყობს ახალგაზრდების დაინტერესების გაზრდას სტუდენტებს საშუალება მიეცემათ, სპექტაკლებს დაესწრონ და ეს შესაძლებლობა საგანმანათლებლო მიზნებითაც გამოიყენონ. ყველა სპექტაკლზე 100-100 ბილეთია გამოყოფილი. დაინტერესების შემთხვევაში კი, როგორც თეატრში განაცხადეს, ეს რაოდენობა გაიზრდება. მრავალფეროვანი სააბონემენტო სისტემა კიდევ ერთი სიახლეა, რომელსაც თეატრი სულ მალე დანერგავს. სპექტაკლებზე დასასწრები აბონემენტების შეძენას, ყოველგვარი შეზღუდვის გარეშე, ნებისმიერი მსურველი შეძლებს.
“ Students’ Tick et” can be used by students of any higher education institution in the country. Within the framework of this initiative, the price of tick ets is 5 or 7 GEL , and on premieres 10 GEL . I n order to buy a discount tick et, a student has to produce a student’s document and a personal I D at the opera cash desk . The creators of the promotion think that the initiative will increase youth interest, students will be able to attend performances and use this opportunity for education purposes as well. 100 tick ets are allocated for each performance. And as the theatre administration announced, in case of higher public interest, the amount of tick ets will be increased. A diverse season tick et system is another novelty that the theatre will soon implement. Season tick ets for performances can be bought by anybody, without any limitations. After restoration of the theatre, probably a lot of people felt a desire to sightsee the renovated building, learn more about its history, which counts well over 160 years, as well as find out more about the artists who used to work in the Opera and B allet theatre. Such a practice of ex cursions in the leading theatres of the world has long been implemented. Soon it will be available here too! A tour in the Opera and B allet Theatre will show the loyal spectators the life behind the scenes, they will be able to check dressing rooms, stage, and visit the ex hibitions space. B oth Georgian and foreign visitors will certainly find the initiative interesting and aid the development of cultural tourism. As you can see, not only the building is the news in the Opera and B allet Theatre, but the many other initiatives as well, which opens the doors wide to the world of art for any interested party. And all there is left for us to do is to visit it in a capacity of a listener, spectator or a sightseer.

Years ago, nobody could have imagined that a boy who dreamt about becoming a football player would make it among the world’s highly-acclaimed opera singers. For the first time in years, urab Sotkilava, the legendary eorgian tenor is returning to Tbilisi with a charity concert. The stories of a successful career path, a tearful farewell with football on Dinamo sports arena, holder of two diplomas simultaneously and a radically divergent professional choice, head of the large family of the Sotkilavas, famous tenor, a husband, a father, and a grandfather to two grandchildren, Mr. urab Sotkilava is the guest of this E O Magazine column.

Mr. Sotkilava, how did you end up on a big stage from football?
ბატონო ზურაბ, როგორ აღმოჩნდით ფეხბურთიდან დიდ სცენაზე?
I t was q uite a long time ago. I was then playing for Dinamo Tbilisi. During one of the matches I got an injury which played an immensely important role in my following career choice. At the time, I lived in the stadium dormitory. I couldn’t imagine my life without football. When I ask ed if I would have been able to continue playing the sport, I was told that I should have considered myself luck y if I were able to even walk straight. That is the second time I can recall that tears filled my eyes. In that period, the stadium was often visited by a professor of conservatoire, teacher of vocals, N ik oloz B ok uchava. H e was a great singer himself, a tenor, a lyric tenor at the Tbilisi Opera and B allet Theatre. One day, when I told him about my misfortune, he look ed at me and said: “ Give up pushing the ball through filthy mud already and come let’s start practicing” . I t was the day I started work ing actively. At the same time, I was on my fourth year in the Polytechnic U niversity of Georgia. F rom the university, I was sent to the mines of Tk varcheli for half a year. U pon my return to Tbilisi I defended my thesis on the 10th of J uly and on the 12th of J uly, I entered conservatoire. Even if I hadn’t gotten the musical education, I would still have been an engineer and most probably, would have found my way through life anyway. And that’s how I ended up on a big stage from Dinamo arena.

You have previously mentioned in one of your interviews that your mother was the one who made attend music classes. How do you recall your childhood? I n my childhood, we lived in Suk humi. There was a massive plane tree in front of our house. I remember everybody gathering under the shadow of that tree. They would enjoy their time by dancing and singing. I n my family, grandma was a good singer, and my mom used to play city romances on a guitar. I used to sing along too. I was little, so I would just hum for myself. I f somebody told me at the time that singing would turn out to be my

As a result of my mother’s efforts, we bought a piano for home. They entered me in the music school to study fortepiano, but as it turned out, I was already a big boy, so they accepted me to vocal classes. Studying fortepiano was necessary there, but it did not prove hard for them to find a way out. I was 14 when V ladimer N atchk ebia, a tenor, grabbed me and took me to a classroom, listened to me and told me I was bass. Then I became baritone. Remembering childhood years always brings me joy. At the time I was playing for Dinamo Suk humi on Georgian championship, I was going in for swimming and I used to sing only when I had some free time. Once my mother bumped into my music teacher in the street and ask ed how I was doing in class. Once she heard the answer and learned that I hadn’t attended a single class for 6 months, she came back home furious and put out all the anger on my boots, cutting them in half with one blow of an ax e. Mother k new all too well about my weak spot. I used to tak e special care of football paraphernalia. I t was because of this that the whole experience hurt a lot and the first tears I remember are related to football. This is what my simultaneous engagement with football and music went lik e.

C U LT U R E How hard is it to live a life of an opera singer beyond the stage? I n general, it is q uite hard. B eing an opera singer req uires constant and strict regimen. Personally for me, football turned out to be very beneficial. owever much talent God spares for you, if you don’t practice and do your best to unearth that godbestowed talent, nobody can really say that you can achieve anything at all in life. I n order to achieve your goals, putting in the tireless effort is an absolute necessity. Y ou have to always be ready for the stage. So, before stepping on the stage for the enjoyment of the spectators, there is q uite intense work to be undertak en with the concertmaster, conductor, director and eventually with your own self. An unprepared singer is easy to spot on any stage. Do the Sotkilavas have any special traditions? ntroduce your family to us. C ertainly, much lik e any other family, we also have our own traditions. On each holiday, our ex tended family would gather in Moscow, among them: my wife’s parents, us, our children, as well as friends and we always used to have lots of fun. C U LT U R E my daughters live in Spain. I n the process of the holiday preparation, I tak e on the role of a gift buyer. My wife, Eliso Turmanidze, is a pianist. She has graduated Tbilisi C onservatoire with a red diploma. We spent years and years working together. When the first child was born, it became problematic to leave the baby to somebody. Then another girl was born. And if we count me as well, since it was as hard to tak e care of me as was caring for the actual babies, all because of my strict regimen, Eliso had to q uit her career and dedicated her life to our large family. As far as my daughters are concerned, none of them has anything to do with music. After graduating from university, the girls went on to live in Spain. A number of famous singers have performed next to you on a stage. Whom would you distinguish among your partners on stage? I don’t lik e it when in some, this q uestion brings up the memories of only foreign partners. I t would be much better to remember those of our own. The most distinguished memory is that of my first performance of Tosca alongside Tamar Tak tak ishvili. I t was a grand event in itself. My N unu Gabunia. Tsisana Tatishvili, L amara Tchk onia, Medea Amiranashvili – work ing with them was an immense pleasure. These ladies had characteristics suitable to world stages. They all had amazing voices. My moving to Russia coincided with the golden era. At the time, among performers were such great talents as Atlantova, Obraztsova, N esterenk o, Ark hipova, Mak vala Kasrashvili, Kalinina. I t was a very strong company. I remember performances staged by Pok rovsk y, which were in no way less than others. How do you recall the years spent in a Scala? Did you then have to independently overcome certain obstacles? I n Moscow I had to participate in a contest and alongside the points, I also got an offer from the judges to go to I taly to study. L a Scala for me turned out to be a source of great transformation. I had a brilliant teacher. I guess you could say that B ara was the last of the Mohicans, who at the time was selected by N odar Andghuladze. I t was a great pleasure to work with him. My arrival to L a Scala proved to be a luck y one. Alongside the numerous obstacles, it was also the greatest ex perience of my life. You have contributed greatly to the world of opera. n your opinion, how talented of a next generation is growing up and whom would you distinguish? I find overwhelming joy in the fact that we have such wonderful sopranos, mezzo-sopranos. Gia Gagnidze is a remark able baritone as well. I t would be hard to list them all owever, I certainly cannot leave out my son-in-law, Shalva Muk eria, whom I consider to be one of the best tenors in the world. I remember, his performance earned

Among the world tenors, uciano Pavarotti was your friend. Did you ever ask each other for professional advice? L uciano was not my friend. I k new him closely and we had a good relationship. H e had an ex ceptional voice. H e was a beautiful singer. We sang together once. H e turned to me and said “ urab, you have such a magnificent piano in tello, so why do you have to hurry so much? C arry on and it will sound much nicer and it will work out . In that specific case, I took his advice with pleasure and it did help me. Mr. Sotkilava, what are your future plans? I t is hard even for a perfectly healthy man to mak e future plans. After recovering from sickness, I first had a concert in B atumi and afterwards, I performed in the grand hall of Moscow conservatoire. Right now, I am preparing for a charity concert to be held in Tbilisi. The 4th of April, the World Autism Awareness Day happened to be one of those ex ceptions when I and my friends: Mak vala Kasrashvili, Gia Gagnidze, Tamar I veri, Shalva Muk eria, N ino Machaidze, N ino Surguladze and Ketevan Kemok lidze came together and will perform before the audience in the Tbilisi Opera Theatre. I have numerous offers regarding concerts from different countries of the world but right now, there is only my Tbilisi in the agenda.

On the 29th of February, the annual awards ceremony EGO AWARDS 2015 was held. This year the event was hosted by Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre. The prizes were awarded in 22 nominations. Among them were, talented, powerful and tasteful woman and man of the year, as well as project of the year, creative company, businessman, young entrepreneur, musician, discovery of the year‌ The nominees were selected by people through a survey, however, the winners were determined by electronic polling. This year saw the second ever EGO AWARDS award ceremony. Other than nominees, among the attendants were the representatives of successful companies operating in Georgia. distinguished Georgian artists Oimactta also performed for Pre Summer Set’s audience.
