T

his season the runway has been decked with Louis Vuitton’s supersize bags, Vivienne Westwood’s woollen garments, Missoni and Christian Dior’s chunky heels, Ralph Lauren’s filigree wrapped stiletto heels, D&G’s head-to-toe prints, Valentino’s black leather gowns, Marc Jacobs and Prada’s rich layering, and more… many more trends that will leave us all spoilt for choice. I’ve already got Burberry’s owl clutch bag on my wish list hoping Santa will be generous this year.

Anna’s skirt or Krissy’s

trousers?

And when it comes to skirts and trousers, some interesting trends are in vogue. In the realm of skirts, pencil is a must for those who want to flaunt their curves in class yet don’t want to suffer the winter chill. As for trousers, whether it’s the cigarette pants, skinnies, wide-legged, the boyfriend look, or a sexy pair of leathers, they have dominated the catwalk this autumn. But it doesn’t end here. If you’re adventurous and aren’t a skirt or trouser only fanatic, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Chanel have reinvented the skirt over trousers trend that our sisters donned back in the mid-1990s. Correct, the fashion gods are suggesting we should give trousers and skirts combined a try. It’s difficult to picture how this can actually look flattering and not odd or clumsy, but if you try combining a pair of cigarette trousers with a matching skirt it can work – it has on the runway. With this in mind, I meet two fashion addicts – Anna who is hopelessly devoted to skirts and Krissy who just embraces the comfort that trousers offer. They have embarked on a stylish war of skirts versus trousers. Who shall win? I’ll leave that to you. FM December 2012 - 9

Krissy by day.

Three reasons why I love skirts

Three reasons why I love trousers

They give an instant feminine touch to an outfit, whether it’s casual or smart, and are versatile in that respect.

While winter approaches and temperatures decrease, I don’t quite like it when my legs go cold, so this is a primary reason why I love them for A/W.

They accentuate the female figure, highlighting the good bits and hiding the parts we’re not too happy about. In my opinion, it is harder to do so with trousers. They showcase our favourite shoes.

Three advantages of skirts over trousers Instant femininity. Unlike trousers, skirts can be paired with any type of shoe. They are an absolute saviour in summer.

Favourite type of skirt Pencil skirts – they give a feminine silhouette and are forgiving to most styles of tops, be it a fitted blouse or a heavy knitted sweater.

What do you think of the skirt and trouser hybrid? I wouldn’t wear a skirt and a pair of trousers together. I believe this trend mainly belongs on the runways, while in everyday life I don’t think there are a lot of women who are proud owners of slim legs starting ‘up there’ in order to pull of such visual division.

They’re the epitome of practicality – I’m quite clumsy so when I’m in trousers I can bend, run, or sit in without worrying I might flash anyone. I find them super comfortable and they can be styled in so many different ways. It’s so much easier to get stylish tops and blouses that work with a good selection of trousers to dress up or dress down.

Three advantages of trousers over skirts Skirts tend to travel on my body, twisting around, or climbing up or down my waist – trousers stay in one place and are more practical. Most trousers usually have pockets, and I find these very essential for many different reasons. With skirts, usually I worry about hosiery and heel height while with trousers I just throw on flats or simple courts and off I go.

Favourite type of trousers It’s hard to choose one favourite because I like experimenting with trousers, although I love low-rise straight leg trousers – they highlight my shape better.

What do you think of the skirt and trouser hybrid? I can never say never when it comes to fashion – I might go for a similar look from the Chanel combinations if I’m feeling extra adventurous in my outfit choice one fine day.

Interview

T h e i r fa s h i o n n u m b e r i s u p Romina Farrugia meets artists and fashion designers Angelique Attard and Charlene Muscat to talk about their creative bug and their projects for Creativefactory7. Photos by Tonio Lombardi. AA: We are first and foremost visual artists but we choose to challenge the limits of our creativity by extending it to other fields. It’s not a full time job so we can take risks and be as daring as we wish to be. Our joint creative passions have led us to design brooches, headbands, hand painted shoes, fashion textiles and wearable art. RF: What studies did you undertake? AA: I have a B.Educ in Art and Italian and teach art in primary state schools.

RF: How long have you known each other? CM: We’ve been friends since we were 16. We met in Junior College at art class and discovered that we shared some common passions, likes and dislikes. We’ve been joined at the hip ever since. RF: Where does the name Creativefactory7 come from? AA: We are always trying to create something new so we decided to call our brand creative factory and put in the number seven for good luck. RF: Do you consider yourselves to be fashion designers or artists?

CM: I read for a course in restoration at Bighi and work as a professional restorer of paintings. RF: What was your first fashion project? CM: One of my very first projects consisted of creating vintage style brooches. I combined painting, vintage photos, illustrations and decorative papers through the method of collage and inserted them in the brooches as you would insert a photo in a frame. In the end they became mini art pieces.

International show that was held in Malta. For this we took a big canvas and splashed paint and abstract designs on it. At the end of the show we removed the painting from its frame and pinned it on a model so that it looked like a colourful, hand painted dress. RF: Tell us about your first fashion collection. AA: Our first capsule collection was called ‘Neon’ and consisted of six outfits. It was inspired by geometric shapes and bold neons and we presented it at the 2011 Malta Fashion Week. With this collection we participated both in the Upcoming Designers section and in the Fashion Awards section. RF: What were your fashion projects for this year? CM: 2012 was a very good year for us. We created a collection which we called Earthworks – we also used this collection for a shoot with photographer Tonio Lombardi.

RF: What about the first project that you did together?

RF: What was your main inspiration for this collection?

AA: Three years ago, we were asked to present an artistic yet fashionable creation during the Miss Bikini World

AA: The inspiration came while taking a stroll close to Gharghur. It was a beautiful, sunny day and while walking

RF: How did you create the shoot with Tonio Lombardi? CM: We’ve known Tonio for a long time so we worked very well together. We first had a brainstorming session with Tonio and stylist Marisa Grima regarding the location of the photo shoot, the choice of models and the mood that we wanted the photos to evoke. After going to various locations we finally chose the main car park in Valletta. The idea was to create a contrast between the cold, concrete, grey background of the car park, the bright clothes and the smoke coloured lights that were used in the shoot. The models were doll like and kept a neutral expression so that the focus would be on the clothes. RF: Which designers inspire you? CM: We like the Greek designer Mary Katrantzou in particular and love the famous trompe l’oeil prints of oversized jewellery that she featured on jersey-bonded dresses. down the valley and inspired by the nature around us, we started brainstorming about creating a collection using the Maltese land and seascapes as a theme. We were keen to use something that was around us and to transform it artistically and fashionably so that it looked particular and different yet at the same time familiar.

RF: What do you see in Creativefactory7’s crystal ball for the future? AA: We see a lot of inspiration and many creative projects, locally and abroad. Soon you will also see us on international website Etsy.

RF: How did you go about creating this collection? AA: We first took photos and created a montage. After that, we discussed the next steps with our tailor, Gaetano Deguara who had already collaborated with us on different fashion projects. He prepared patterns for the clothes we had in mind and with these in hand we went to the printing company. It wasn’t easy to prepare the fabric for the heat transfer – it was like fitting pieces in a jigsaw puzzle because we did not want any repetition but wanted specific images to go in exact areas of the fabric. Luckily we worked very well with the printing company and were very happy with the result.

Sara Caruana. Photo by Valentina Lupo

RF: What were the next steps? CM: We took the silky fabric that was now printed with our photomontage back to Gaetano who created the collection according to our designs and finally it was ready to be presented at this year’s Malta Fashion Awards. RF: How would you describe the Earthwork collection? AA: It’s original and particular yet wearable. Charlene and I both have a favourite dress from the collection that we like wearing.

Get sporty Like other animal-inspired fashion this season, the Adidas Originals Animal Pack is going into a reptile look with this exotic snake-inspired line. The collection has a smoky grey snakeskin detail either on the three stripes or all over with an embossed logo. The new apparel collection includes t-shirts, pants, zip-ups and leggings. The patterns are pretty out there, but this Adidas Originals Pack brings a flashy, attention grabbing look. Visit Adidas Originals, Level -2, The Point or any Eurosport store. New Year

New and improved It’s make or break for New Year resolutions, says Daniela Brockdorff. Photos by Joe Farrugia.

Y

es, it’s that time of year again. We eat, we eat some more; we drink, we drink some more; and then we party, and we party some more.

And then, when we wake up on January 1, perhaps a little bit dazed, we start to think of all the New Year resolutions we made. And it suddenly dawns on us that we have to actually put these resolutions into action. Some dash to the gym, eagerly hoping to wave goodbye to the extra few calories they had welcomed during the holidays. Others try to quit smoking if only for a few hours, plan to master the art of baking or at least learn a few words in French. But some aim higher and set goals that they do their outmost to achieve. Let’s see what singer Nadine Axisa and actor Daniel Lake plan to do.

Nadine Axisa Do you believe in New Year resolutions? I think that New Year resolutions can be very effective, if taken seriously of course. However, you do not need to wait for a new year to make a change in your life – any time of the year is good enough if you are determined to achieve a specific goal. On the other hand, I guess the New Year can serve as a good incentive to start. What will your resolutions be for the coming year? To be honest, I still need to give it some thought. I could definitely do with a bit more time for myself and for my family. Maybe I can start by planning to reduce my workload but I’m pretty certain this will be hard to achieve. What were last year’s resolutions and did you manage to keep them? I had no specific resolution, but probably I was again planning to manage my time better and lead a less busy life. I admit it is one of my weak points since I hate to say no and disappoint people.

What has been the most beneficial resolution you have ever made? The best resolution I ever made, or rather a decision on the way to live life, was to dedicate time for God and work on my personal relationship with Him. I feel this has changed me to a better person, made me aware that I needed to improve specific areas in my life and eventually I learned to be more sensitive to the needs of others. I still have a long way to go but ever since I made this resolution about six years ago, I have discovered my reason to live which, in turn, gives me continuous thrust to improve. Is there any resolution you will never make simply because you know that it would be impossible to keep it? Eat less – it’s the first thing that comes to mind. For now, I do not need to lose weight but if I ever need to (and there will most probably be a point in my life where I will need to) that will be a hard job for me. I just love food and sweets.

FM December 2012 - 17

New Year manage their time more efficiently while eating healthy and working towards their preferred or ideal weight. So look out – it’s coming soon in 2013. What were last year’s resolutions and did you manage to keep them? My resolutions last year changed a little bit almost as soon as the clock struck midnight. Life happens and change happens with it. My resolution was to steady myself in one place and to develop my ideas with two feet on solid ground. I definitely managed to get that underway. I wanted a new challenge too and, having travelled the world through modelling, I wanted to send a message out there for something new. Next thing I knew, I was accepting a lead role in a musical. And no, I’m not a singer. What has been the most beneficial resolution you have ever made?

Daniel Lake Do you believe in New Year resolutions? I believe that New Year resolutions are a great way to start off a new and improved lifestyle. Most of us just love the holidays and tend to overindulge so the thought of a resolution on its way tends to be comforting. What will your resolutions be for the coming year? My resolution for 2013 is to manage my time more efficiently. I also plan to begin a movement that would help others

I’m a true believer in life getting better and better each year. But if I had to dig through the archives, I would also mention that one specific year when I decided to go for it and not limit myself through fear or doubt. I believe I was 18 when this occurred to me and boy, did it change my life forever. Is there any resolution you will never make simply because you know that it would be impossible to keep it? At this point, I can’t think of any resolutions that I would never make. I’m not opposed to change and I’m definitely open to the fact that others can help in my development, gaining fulfilling life experiences. I believe that there is benefit to be had from all experiences; therefore, I do not wish to hold myself back. I believe in the law of attraction, which states that if you genuinely open up to a happening or occurrence, then that happening will unfold towards you.

Fashion

A wardrobe

revolution

It’s the end of the year as we know it and Anne Marie Spiteri prepares her 2013 fashion resolutions.

The Green Carpet Challenge.

A

ssuming that the world doesn’t end on December 31, 2012, we’re all going to have to dust the fatalism off our 2013 yearly planners in order to quickly come up with some decent New Year resolutions. If I remember correctly, one of my 2012 resolutions was to be more positive – as the year trickles to a close I’m reviving it with a vengeance by bravely refusing to believe that the apocalypse beckons. Consequently, I’ve been trying to come up with resolutions for the coming year. The one I’ve so far settled on sees me doing my part to save the planet and I’m planning on executing my promise exclusively through my wardrobe, by trying to adopt a sustainable approach to fashion. Sustainable fashion is by no means a new concept and a number of celebrities and fashion designers have periodically endorsed the cause. Over the past few years, one previously relatively unknown name has brought fresh prominence to the issue of sustainability in fashion and has in the process become synonymous with the term itself. Livia Firth, actor Colin Firth’s wife, started the Green Carpet Challenge in 2009, when she took it upon herself to collaborate with various designers in order to wear only entirely sustainably produced evening dresses to red carpet events. Her initiative has encouraged others to do the same and over the years many celebrities, including Meryl Streep and Javier Bardem, have participated in this challenge, thus raising awareness while proving once and for all that ethical doesn’t have to mean drab and ugly. While this initiative is undoubtedly positive, there is still a great chasm between the rich and glamorous who can afford this kind of thing and the rest of us who simply want to go about our daily business looking stylish while also being socially and environmentally responsible. Notwithstanding the limited budget

and lack of designer connections, there is still a lot that can be done. First, we must learn to think while we shop. If a top is selling for a few euros, chances are that the people involved in its manufacture aren’t being paid fairly and that the top itself is poorly made and probably won’t last beyond a couple of washes. Consequently, it is more sustainable to buy one slightly more expensive top which will likely last longer and also look better. Once you’ve bought the clothes, taking care of them properly is key to keeping them in top condition for as long as possible. Before snapping it off, take a good look at the care instructions label. Fix undone hems and seams, take in loose threads and treat stains as they occur. Don’t wash clothes unnecessarily and avoid tumble-drying, which tends to be harsh on the clothes and the environment. The fabric that the clothes you’re purchasing are made of is another factor that must be deliberated. Sustainable fashion is traditionally associated with natural fibres such as linen, silk and cotton, preferably organically produced. While natural fibres are advantageous in that they are 100 per cent biodegradable at the end of their life cycle, they might sometimes not be as environmentally friendly during their actual life span. They generally take longer to dry and are more likely to wrinkle than synthetic fibres, meaning that they may need to be ironed more often than polyester and nylon. Organic cotton is another bone of contention. Its virtues are that no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides are used during production. On the other hand, organically grown plants tend to be less productive, which might lead to the farming of larger areas of land in order to satisfy demand. One good way to settle all the uncertainty is to look to reliable sources in order to familiarise yourself with the

environmental track record of your favourite brands. While you might be in for some nasty surprises, in the end it’s the only way to make a really informed choice. Another option is to widen your shopping horizons to include brands that specialise in eco fashion. As far as I can tell, no such brands have opened shop in Malta, but some, such as Komodo and People Tree, are easily available online. Such brands, which utilise natural textiles, eco-fibres and recycled materials, are often more expensive than regular high street brands and their collections tend to be somewhat limited, but these shortcomings are made up for by their noble aspirations. Another environmentally friendly avenue is vintage and second hand. In the past month, I relinquished two Sunday lie-ins in order to traipse around flea markets and I also spent a good number of hours rifling through the wares in several charity shops. All was in vain and I came across absolutely nothing that could by any stretch of imagination be described as vintage, original or beautiful. Whichever path you choose, tidying your wardrobe before setting out on your shopping trip will help put you in the right frame of mind. Place items in distinct piles according to what you’re planning on doing with them: one for clothes that need to be altered or mended, one for clothes that are so worn out that they can only be thrown away, another for clothes that can be re-purposed and yet another for clothes that are still in good condition but that you no longer want anyway. Items from the latter pile can be given away to a charity shop or passed on to a friend. Alternatively, you could choose to organise a clothing swap party. While this will require a fair amount of organisation, it will be a fun way to ring in 2013 while doing your part to stave off the end of the world for a while longer.

Face value

It’s even easier to love the skin you’re in when it’s dewy, radiant and luminous. Sean Patrick Sullivan’s never-fail guide reveals all you’ll ever need to know on the subject of facial skincare.

I

The author met his muse, Dahlia Schweitzer, on set for L'Oreal Paris. She still takes great care of her skin, and it shows. Photograph by Ben Cope. Manipulation by Jeff Nguyen.

n my work as a cosmetics-industry educator and communicator, I’ve spoken to women from all over the world about the products they use and the effects they hope, pray and intend to achieve.

It never fails to amaze me how expert most women are at rouging, bronzing, concealing, accentuating, and otherwise creating illusions on their skin, and yet at the same time, how little they know about caring for their skin in the first place. It’s a sudden about face versus a few generations ago, when skincare rituals were faithfully passed from grandmother to mother to daughter. Nowadays, women are left to fend for themselves, alone in a sea of over-abundant product selections and aggressive marketing campaigns. In light of this, our wellness centre is currently developing a skincare-education curriculum which we plan to launch next spring, along with a dispensary featuring some of our favourite organic brands. For now, enjoy this special sneak preview of our plan, which we’re sharing rather exclusively with FM magazine.

Put the past behind you If you want your skin’s future to look bright, then you have to leave your old skincare experiences in the past. Yes, you may have endured unpleasant experiences, or used ineffective products, leading you to think that nothing works, facials always make you red, products make you break out, you’re too busy, I’m doomed to pimples and wrinkles. But it doesn’t have to be that way moving forward, especially if you’re working with entirely new philosophies, ingredients, and expectations.

Jump start with a facial When you’re ready to let your beauty come naturally, you might want to start with a facial. Yes, it’s pampering and you’ll get access to ingredients and techniques only available to licensed professionals. But, more than that, if you work with an aesthetician whose observational and diagnostic techniques are superior, you’ll learn more about your skin – its personality, what it likes and doesn’t, problems that may be around the corner – than you ever thought possible.

Be realistic, be responsible, be radiant Once you’ve enjoyed your facial and you’ve been educated about your own skin, it’s probably going to look and feel better than ever. But it won’t last unless you choose to become a bit more realistic and responsible about your skincare. Here’s what we mean by “realistic”: you’re going to age. Stop fighting it. Balance it instead. A wrinkle or two, or maybe some crow’s feet, don’t matter much on a face that looks dewy, fresh, bright, and alive. On the other hand, a Botox-tight face on a woman who’s anxious about her age and appearance looks old and tired. Here’s what we mean by “responsible”: you may have the best serum in the world, right at your fingertips, but if you don’t apply it every day, twice a day, on properly cleansed skin, your skin isn’t going to benefit.

Perform daily rituals How do you take care of your skin? You may be tempted to keep ‘curing’

Sean Patrick Sullivan is the director of education and communication at The BAO Institute For Healthy Living, a North American fitness and wellness centre. He is the author of How To Be Happy (Even When You’re Not) and divides his time between Chicago, Toronto, Montreal and Manhattan.

perceived problems (such as lack of radiance) or ‘preventing’ anticipated problems (such as sagging or wrinkling) with special peels, masks, scrubs, spot treatments and under-eye treatments. Those products may have their place, later in your journey. For now, start with a basic skincare ritual, performed every morning and evening.

Choose your partners wisely When it comes to choosing skincare products, you want products that are natural, effective, and luxurious. By “natural” we mean non-toxic, nonsynthetic, non-irritating ingredients that are sourced from nature. By “effective” we mean products that, when used as directed, deliver the promised results. By “luxurious”, we mean a pleasure to your senses and sensibilities. You have to enjoy using them or they just don’t work. If you don’t have the time, interest and knowledge to choose your own products, then find a spa or store, staffed with educated consultants who are willing to make suggestions, set expectations, and demonstrate usage.

Fitness Cleanse with caution Once you’ve found your cleanser, use it every morning (to wash away the dead tissue your skin has been exhaling overnight) and every evening (to wash away the oil, dirt, toxins, and pollutants your skin has been attracting all day long). First moisten your face with a warm, wet, clean facecloth. Using your fingertips, rub the recommended amount of cleanser onto your face, in small circular motions, for about a minute. Then leave the product on a little bit longer while you brush your teeth. When it’s time to rinse, use lots of warm water to make sure all residue has been wiped away. Facecloths can help – and they provide exfoliating benefits as well – but they can be rough, so use with caution.

Balance your way to beautiful After cleansing, your skin’s naturally occurring and necessary acids have been neutralised. You have to restore that acidity or your skin may start to look dull, tired, lifeless over time. The way to do this is with a good toner, which will optimise your skin’s PH while delivering additional benefits like soothing inflammation, disinfecting breakouts, and preparing your skin to receive moisturiser. Some people like to apply toner with a cotton ball, but that wastes a lot of product. We recommend a few mists with an atomiser or, better yet, a good, oldfashioned splash.

Condition yourself to look good With your face moist from toner, apply your conditioner. We say “conditioner” instead of “moisturiser” because some people don’t need moisture, but everybody needs to feed their skin with certain nutrients. Conditioners come in four forms – oils, serums, lotions, and creams – and may be used individually or in combination depending on your skin’s needs. No matter what you choose to use, place the recommended amount of product, usually somewhere from one drop to one pump, in the palm of your hand. Rub your palms together and press the warmed-up product into your face, making sure to go everywhere, including your neck and eyelids. For best results, make sure your face and hands are moist with toner.

Minerals matter Now’s the time to apply sunscreen or makeup if you so choose. Make sure you never use conventional, chemical-rich versions of these products. Though they’re often marked “non-comedogenic” and “dermatologist-tested”, they can worsen pre-existing skin conditions, and their long-term health consequences are potentially extreme. Instead, use mineral-based sunscreen and makeup. If you currently wear concealer, foundation, and “natural looking” lip colour, experiment with just a hint of bronzer and a bright lip colour. We find this is a quicker, cheaper, more effective way of hiding imperfections and adding radiance.

Observe and adapt Perform your skincare ritual every morning and evening for a month. Then take a look at your face and evaluate. Colour still uneven? Consider adding a peel. Texture still feels rough? Consider adding a scrub. Pores still enlarged or congested? Consider adding a mask. Pimples, wrinkles, redness, under-eye areas still need some help? Consider specialised treatments to get the results you want. If you’re not sure what to add ask your aesthetician when you get your monthly facial. 01/11/2012 09:49

Budget Queen

Three wise looks Lara Boffa waves her wand and recycles three looks for Christmas.

H

ere we go again. Stocking fillers, wrapping paper, Mariah Carey Christmas songs playing incessantly all over our capital city, gorgeously decorated shop windows: it’s definitely looking a lot like Christmas. As our bank account braces itself for yet another spree, I gradually begin to digest the reality of having to dress up for a million and one Christmas parties. I can think of a handful of reasons why I like to budget purchases for Christmas parties. Firstly, ‘Grinch’ is my second name during the Christmas period. It’s easier for me to wake up with perfectly straight hair than to become anything close to a Christmas person. Secondly, most of the people who invite you to celebrate the festivities mysteriously forget your existence during the rest of the year, so that makes my will to spend money on their parties almost negligible. Thirdly, and most importantly, I tend to spend way too much during the year and by December my bank balance is in serious need of a facelift. I still want to look good though, so I’ll have to recycle. The teaming of my favourite pair of black Capri pants and a trusty white shirt is a staple combination in my wardrobe. Due to its evident versatility, it provides an excellent blank canvas that allows for plenty of experimentation. That’s exactly what I need. I decide to adopt two approaches, layering and focus shifting, so as to distract from the fact that I am recycling the same base over and over again. The first party is a reunion with my former work colleagues. My excolleagues are quite blazer fans, so the event will end up looking like a ‘who has the best blazer?’ competition. After mulling it over, I go for the tuxedo look. Ever since the Kardashians shot their 2011 Holiday Card in tuxedo jackets, they rose to an increased popularity in 2012. I’m always up for a touch of androgyny and even though I want to fit in the ‘blazer crowd’, I still want my blazer and pants look to have

something different. My choice falls on a stone-coloured blazer with contrasting lapels. If I feel particularly adventurous, I’ll go as far as adding a tie or a little ribbon bow. Paired with a pair of black pumps or kitten heels, I’m all set to catch up on the latest from the office. On to the second party – the annual family gathering. As I inspect the guest list, I realise the occasion does not require too much dressing up. Oh, and there are going to be my little cousins too, and I am always struck by an unexplainable bout of playfulness when they’re around, so I have to be comfortable enough to run around with them. My grey jumper seems the ideal addition to my base. This preppy, layered look is my kind of thing. Apart from making the look seem more put together, it adds texture without overdoing it. Since the palette is really monochromatic, I risk being seen as the relative who didn’t put enough effort into her outfit, so I opt for my red pumps for a pop of colour. Red lipstick lifts the outfit and matches my footwear, so I’ll add that as well. If I have to wash a few dishes to please my aunt at the end of the night, I’m definitely comfortable enough to roll up my sleeves. Needless to say, that jumper also disguises the bloating from my inability to resist Auntie’s mouthwatering dishes. I have yet to master the art of saying ‘no’ to her profiteroles.

The third party sees me meeting a couple of friends who are the ‘sit down for wine and nibbles’ type. That’s a good excuse to wear a pair of sky-high shoes. Luckily for me, the shoes that fall within this category are of a bold nature. They’re statement enough to attract all the attention and distract from my base. I always fancy having a pair of animal print pumps, even though I am generally very cautious with donning them. I therefore choose to keep the rest as simple as possible and if my hair was longer I would tie it up in a sleek, neat top-knot to have it out of the way. You could obviously swap your eye-catching shoes for a statement necklace, an embellished bag or else your favourite printed scarf. Make sure that item is the focal point of the outfit and you are bound to be the talk of the town – or should I say Facebook? – the day after.

Red lipstick lifts the outfit and matches my footwear.

‘Tis the season of giving and I have already compiled my Christmas wish list. Buying gifts for stylish friends or girlfriends can be rather stressful. Sizes, fits, too flash, too bright? It can cause even the most seasoned fashionista or boyfriend to stress out. In my humble opinion I would advise that you opt for accessories like handbags in muted colours, delicate jewellery or cosy knitwear. A girl can never have too many of these pieces – just remember to keep it classic.

Sarah Jessica Parker, the Olsen sisters and even Pixie Lott – it seems the wonderful world of fashion has gone ear mad. It’s a pretty eccentric look and I love it, but I think I’ll leave it to the professionals. Somehow I don’t think Malta is ready for ear accessories just yet.

Snow is falling Customers shopping at The Plaza Shopping Centre in Sliema are in for a surprise. For the first time in Malta, Plaza will be enchanting people with over 2,000 minutes of falling snow from December 8-24. The run up to Christmas is packed with entertainment for all the family including the chance to win over €15,000 worth of prizes. Since Christmas is a time of solidarity, Santa’s helpers will be inviting customers to put up a decorative item on The Plaza’s Christmas tree. For every decoration put up, customers may donate any amount to L-Istrina Community Chest Fund.

I’m beyond excited.

Going Shopping? Shop in style this season and look good while keeping with the trends. Bronze is a must-have colour so why not wear a vintage look top combined with a high-waist classic skirt? And if you want to feel warmer, make sure you have a smart casual coat that can be combined with this outfit.

Going to an evening Staff Party? Finding the right outfit for your Christmas staff party can be hectic. You want to look professional but at the same time impress your colleagues. Try a fabulous and sexy black skin-tight dress and add a touch of colour with some coloured accessories or a shiny shoe.

Re-union during the Festive Season? New Year’s Eve Dinner? Instead of the usual black, this year stand out more by wearing a gorgeous red dress. Be elegant while showing off some skin through the see-through effect that this dress has. So this year why not invest in a smart red dress?

Interview

Gayle is an inspired freelance fashion stylist, image consultant and fashion blogger known for her eye for detail. Her work captures attention and she brings organisation and innovation to every job.

Costume drama A

fter I was invited to the press preview of The Death of Snow White: A Tragedy in 7 Days, I just had to meet the talented production and costume designer Luke Azzopardi and have a chat with him. And I had to get all the details about the exquisite costumes he produced for his second production with the Naupaca Dance Factory which will show on December 7 and 9 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. Tell me a little about yourself. Probably the first time I showcased my work was in Vista: A Contemporary Art Tour with my video installation A Temporary Home. Then in 2011, my short film Ardor was shortlisted for the Malta International Television Short Film Festival and screened at the closing night of the Kinemastik Film Festival. I joined Naupaca as Production and Costume designer in January 2011, designing for The Dream and Alice’s Adventures Under Ground. I studied Performance Design and Practice at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, focusing on costume and set design and now I’m reading for a History of Art Degree. When did you realise you wanted to become a costume designer? I never really decided in a conscious manner – I was always interested in theatre and garments in motion so it was very natural for me to be attracted to production design. I guess it was a very fluid process of moving away from traditional fine art to performance art

Luke Azzopardi takes a fine art approach to costumes in motion. Gayle Zerafa Cutajar is impressed. Photos by Marc Casolani. and design for performance. How long does it usually take you to construct a piece?

I usually go through a lengthy process of designing both the garment and the print – then after the technical process of fabric printing, I move on to construction. Clients and dancers usually prove to be the main source of inspiration themselves – how they feed me with ideas usually affects the process. Where did you source your fabric for your next production, The Death of Snow White? I have printed most of the more elaborate fabrics myself. I’ve sourced out images of paintings and icons and printed them onto an array of fabrics ranging from naturals to manmade weaves, pure silks, processed cottons and advanced blends of nylon lycras. Most of the Queen’s costumes are also embedded with Swarovski crystals and other precious stones, along with an original 19th century Santos Virgin Mary crown. I would go to the extreme of saying that the process of making the costumes was itself an iconographical one – of course I wasn’t praying on the fabrics,

but I constructed them with a sense of reverence and respect. I’ve embellished the characters as one would pay homage to a holy statue by adding trinkets and jewels. How would you define the style you have created so beautifully for the show? With the costumes for The Death of Snow White, I’ve been looking at traditional Japanese NOH theatre costumes and Gothic architecture and iconography. I’ve also put in a lot of work into exploring the idea of adding to the body – post-humanism and prehumanism. The production in general is divided into two – a far-eastern aesthetic and acceptance of the beauty of the passage of time, and on the other hand, a very imposing vision of explicitly religious gothic iconology. This combination stabilises the Queen-Snow White relationship and gives a setting to the whole choreography. What do you believe makes a quality article of clothing? Research and truthfulness towards the sources. Adding to and deconstructing tailoring techniques. Finally, finding the necessary links between your personal style and the conceptual process. What do you like best about designing clothes? Making people angry. Really, it’s fantastic. When it comes to deadlines, fabric choices and (for stage) choreographic needs, somebody always seems to be unhappy. I guess most FM December 2012 - 51

Interview character, and that’s why I love feeding off the clients’ personalities to create the garments: I want to remain true to what they are. The way I approach my work doesn’t parallel fashion design – it has a fine art approach which finds in its core the combination of conceptual art and patronage.

collection I’ve started piecing together. Right now The Death of Snow White is on top of my agenda, and after that I plan to seriously start working on a brand.

Who are your favourite designers? clients have their own pre-conceived ideas of what my work should look like, or at least, what they would like it to look like. Unfortunately, I’m not usually that easy to work with. It makes me really proud to still please clients at the end after a pseudo-rebellious process. What does fashion mean to you? Not a lot. My own personal wardrobe is quite disastrous, but in all honesty I don’t have the time to spend on myself. I had to make a choice – make myself look good or make others look good. Hardly anybody has the energy for both – especially when I’m working on establishing my own brand. On the most literal level, fashion for me is the most basic way to read a person or

I haven’t decided yet. I love theatricality so I would safely say Jean Paul Gaultier – he has also designed costumes for contemporary dance productions, which is exactly what I’m doing now. I also like Christian Lacroix and Dolce & Gabbana. I full-heartedly hate bleak and clean fashion design. I love festivity. When it comes to artists and performance practitioners I find Marina Abramovic immensely inspiring, and all other post-feminist, gender boundary exploring performance artist follow. I also love painter Jan Van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch. What are some of your fashion goals? I haven’t really set any goals for the near future apart from a potential Fall-Winter

Style Wise

WHAT I KNOW ABOUT STYLE

Your style is a combination of fashion and personality, says model Lara Cassar Delia.

Both my eldest sister and one of my cousins used to model when they were in their teens and early twenties. I used to look at them and admire their confidence and beauty. They became my role models, not just as fashion models but also as two girls full of energy and self-confidence. I remember my first fashion shoot very well. I still have the photos and often show them around because they’re hilarious. I was just 15, my fashion sense was a mess, and I had pink streaks in my hair because I was an Avril Lavigne fan. Still, I felt so confident as if I had modelled a million times before. It was fun and I was simply being me. A fashion shoot is a collaboration between photographer, model, stylist, make-up artist and hair stylist. Everyone has a vital role to play in order for the shoot to be successful. There are a lot of very good professional models I admire and I study a lot of their shoots and catwalks. But in the end, I have my own personality and figure. I only need to adopt some of their good ideas in a way that suits me. Fashion changes with the times. On the other hand, style is the combination of your personality and fashion. It’s more personal. Not everything that is in fashion can be part of your style.

Lara’s rules of style

She’s a model

• Always wear jewellery.

Age: 23

• Chunky heels are a blessing – they are sexy and comfortable.

Name: Lara Cassar Delia Doing: Currently reading for a Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design at MCAST Art and Design.

• Winter is perfect for layering – it creates a medley of textures and makes an outfit more interesting.

• Wear hats and beanies in winter. • Your style is an indication of your personality.

I’m a shopaholic. However, I plan my shopping and always make sure that whatever I buy suits my figure and personality. At the moment I’m in love with the sophisticated baroque-inspired materials, leather jackets, trousers and boots. I also fancy studs because I’m a bit of a transgressive chick. Black is also a wardrobe staple but I like to experiment with colours such as dark purples, plums and reds. Shoes or clothes? I think clothes, because I could survive with two pairs of shoes, but not with two outfits. Last year I spent my Christmas Eve in a glamorous outfit and New Year’s Eve in my pyjamas. What’s most important to me is with whom I celebrate the festive season rather than what I wear or where I go. As much as I love to be all glamorous and sophisticated, Christmas is the only time of the year when I can take a break from my routine and enjoy my dear ones – so I would go for pyjamas, a cup of hot chocolate and my loved ones.

What or who encouraged you to start modelling?

The model

FM Sep '10 cover, photo by Tonio Lombardi.

Name: Francesca Petra Caruana Age: 24 Education: B.Com, B. Accountancy Hons. Profession: Auditor, accountant.

When I was 16, a friend of mine had commented that I had the kind of look that was very in demand for fashion photography and urged me to take part in the Jubilee calendar competition – I was chosen to represent December. Then some three and a half years ago, I was scouted by the beautiful and talented photographer Valentina Lupo, who encouraged me to feature in a shoot for a local magazine. In 2011, I was even nominated as a Photo Model for the Malta Fashion Awards. Do you remember your first modelling experience? How could I forget such a thrilling experience? It was a shoot for a local magazine. I still remember waking up early on an extremely hot Sunday morning in mid-July. It was all about creating a portfolio of various shots of me in different environments, wearing different clothes. The location was at a farm in Bidnija – being an animal lover, I was even more thrilled to find out that I was going to be shooting with horses and animals. I was quite nervous at first – however, the photographer did wonders and helped me relax. How did your wardrobe look like when you were young? It was all about frills, ruffles and cute little girl dresses with bows and ribbons. However, I remember being irritated at the fact that my dresses were not original at all, since my twin sister had the same clothes, just in different colours. How does it look like now? It is still pretty much focused on dresses. I love all types of dresses, from wintry and summery colourful dresses to sparkly and sequined prom and evening gowns. The style also varies from long and fitted to short and puffy ones.

If you had to choose between clothes and shoes, what would you go for? Definitely clothes. Though I never go out without my stiletto heels, I’m not much into accessories and shoes.

Which colours and styles do you think suit you best? I think bright vibrant patterns are my thing. Do you plan your shopping trips or are you a guerrilla shopper? I’m very guerrilla in my approach to shopping – having my apartment located in a shopping plaza doesn’t help at all. Do you check price tags when shopping? It all depends on my financial situation at that point in time. But more often than not, if I fall in love with something, I buy it there and then – otherwise, I find myself thinking about it and being cross with myself at not having bought it immediately. Your current favourite item in your wardrobe? My favourite wardrobe item will always remain my Mango denim dungarees and a loose fitting Miss Sixty tank top.

Last Word

A different angle Photographer Conrad Neil Gatt zooms in on what it takes to be different.

Zooming in Name: Conrad Neil Gatt Age: 35 Profession: Senior technician and photographer.

What’s the best photograph that you didn’t manage to capture?

Who or what inspired you to take up a camera and start shooting? Photography always interested me since I was very young. However, the birth of my daughter inspired me to shoot the most important instances of her new achievements, from her first teeth to her first few steps. Then I attended a photography course with Albert de Marco and joined the Malta Photographic Society. What are your memories of your first camera? I was very fond of my Nikon Coolpix L100. However, I soon found myself very restricted as it was not an SLR and did not have a manual function. I needed to be in total control of my camera settings, rather than leaving it up to that black plastic gadget to decide for me. What is the genre that best showcases your style? I had a try at practically everything, but the area that I am more at ease in is taking photos of people, from weddings and stage photography to portraits and photojournalism. I’m also particularly interested in fashion and glamour – I have been shooting some of the most important local fashion shows and beauty contests since 2012 as well as the London Fashion Week S/S 2013.

66 - FM December 2012

When doing a fashion shoot, how do you enhance the chemistry between you, the model, the stylist and the rest of the team? Organising a fashion shoot is not easy. Personally, the first thing I ask is what does the boutique owner, stylist or designer want to portray with the collection. I have been involved in fashion shoots both as a photographer and coordinator – both situations gave me plenty of thrills. In these past two and a half years, I have been entrusted to coordinate shoots both locally and abroad. In my humble opinion, a successful shoot is obtained by having a model who can give you the emotion you are looking for. Lights, shades and shadows can be edited or enhanced in post-processing, but feelings and emotions should be delivered by the model on location, aided by good makeup, nails, accessories, hair, and location, which all help in creating the right mood. Sometimes the model and the rest of the team would never have met before and it’s up to you to get everyone working together in harmony. We usually meet before the shoot to explain what everyone’s role to achieve the final goal is. Do you always carry a camera around with you? I don’t always carry around my DSLR with me, but I do take photos with my mobile phone – they’re pretty good for candid shots.

There are endless circumstances where you try to capture a specific gesture, a particular mood or some kind of movement and you do not succeed. This could be due to various reasons, from camera settings to lack of breath control during shooting. There is one opportunity which I will never be able to shoot again – the birth of my daughter six years ago. It was a caesarean section and I wasn’t even allowed to look, let alone take photos. What makes you press the shutter release? It’s instinctive. It’s a sort of second nature to know when you have to press the button. Still, taking a good photo is not just about pressing the shutter release. You need to set the correct shutter speed, aperture, ISO, positioning and lights. You also need to have a good eye and think outside the box. You get all this through a lot of training and practice. The most important thing is to be different – that is what I base my photography on.
