CHRISTMAS

The girls of Ira Losco, Pauline Agius and Miriam Dalli give Claire Caruana their wish list.

“I love seeing others unwrapping their gifts.”

A

s December rolls in, the million-dollar question that forms on everyone’s lips is usually about what we want for Christmas. As children, we would write our list with the utmost attention given to every little detail, but as we grow older this seems to become less important. Instead, quality time with family, some time off and spreading a sparkle of cheer around us becomes the main reason to look forward to Christmas. Ira Losco, Pauline Agius and Miriam Dalli are all looking forward to Christmas, not quite for the gifts they’ll be receiving, but rather to enjoy some time with family after a busy year.

10 - Femme December

Pauline Agius

Also looking forward to the joys of Christmas, Pauline Agius is eager to spend the festivities with her husband and family while also looking forward to see what 2014 holds in store. Although she does not write a wish list, Pauline’s husband treats her to gifts he knows she’s eager to receive. “My husband fills up my stocking with little things he will know I would love and enjoy receiving. Besides the other gift under the Christmas tree of course”. She is happy when receiving gifts she needs because these are usually the gifts she really wants. “On the other hand I love to be spoilt with something I don’t really need but I would really love to have,” she adds. Busy buying gifts for other people, Pauline rarely gets herself Christmas gifts, preferring to treat others. “I love seeing others unwrapping their gifts and the look on their faces especially the little ones, my nephews and nieces,” she says.

Although not a Christmas food lover, Pauline’s favourite tradition is Christmas lunch. “Like most families in Malta, Christmas lunch is quite a big deal, starting from as early as 11am and finishing off as late as midnight.” Her favourite part of the day is supper because she gets to indulge in all the leftovers. “What I love most is the sandwich I make early evening on Christmas Day with cold turkey, salad and roast potatoes. It tastes divine and I’ll be the only one having it since everyone else will be full,” she adds. Pauline sets daily goals rather than annual ones because she finds them more achievable. “Last year my target was to finish my house with my husband and move in by mid this year and we did so – it was a year of hard work, lots of sacrifice but a huge sense of achievement. Now I’m curious to find out what 2014 has in store for me to explore, live, learn and if I’m lucky enough conclude.”

“My sister and I always fell asleep before Santa arrived.” Miriam Dalli

As a new mum, Miriam Dalli is looking forward to spend Christmas with her son and the rest of her family while also being able to have a little time off. “I love Christmas simply because it gives me such a good vibe and a nice warm feeling,” she says. “Now with Jack, our son, we’re really looking forward to his very first Christmas with us. All I wish for is a Christmas to remember, where we can spend time together as a family and where we can enjoy Christmas with our extended families,” Miriam says. Miriam prefers gifts she really wants rather than those she needs. She doesn’t buy gifts for herself and is happiest buying for others. “I love buying gifts for others as somehow it gives me a more positive sensation than receiving gifts,” she explains. Christmas day for Miriam is a traditional one. “We make it a point to attend Christmas mass and love waking up early to open the gifts that we would have left for each other under the Christmas tree. It is also imperative for us to have Christmas lunch with our family,” she says. For Miriam, Christmas also brings wonderful childhood memories. Her favourite Christmas food is chestnut soup her mother has made ever since she was a little girl. She also reminisces about the time she used to be tucked into bed by her parents and wait for Santa with her sister. “Needless to say my sister and I always fell asleep before Santa arrived” The new year means new targets for Miriam. “Rather than goals and resolutions I set my main targets at the beginning of the year and I always make my utmost to achieve them.”

“I like things I can use or that can give me amazing memories.” Ira Losco

With a new album released recently, Ira Losco has been busy all year round and for her, Christmas is no longer about gifts. “For me, Christmas isn’t about gifts any more. It’s more about spending time with my loved ones. I’m constantly on the go and I never give time to the people who mean the world to me,” she says. “I’m always trying to please everyone and sometimes I don’t have time to hang out with the people who matter most. So Christmas is a time to really enjoy my family.” That said, she does have a favourite type of gift. “I like things I can use or that can give me amazing memories.” Being happy with the small things, she usually treats herself to a fancy lunch when out shopping. Her favourite tradition is spending Christmas with her family. “Everyone comes over and we eat together, have a tea party after lunch and play board games. It’s just a day of stuffing our faces and enjoying each other’s company,” she says. As to her favourite Christmas food, her choice is quite unique. “My mother still bakes recipes that my late paternal grandmother left her. The sweets are typical Egyptian and Arabic delicacies,” Ira explains. As for New Year’s resolutions, these are very important for Ira. “I’m always setting myself goals and challenges. And whenever I don’t reach them within deadline, I stop, focus and start again till I get where I want to be. I’m very determined and ambitious. I’ve always worked hard and achieved what I set out to do.” FM

Sa n t a ’ s s t y li s h h e lp e r Little elves playing tricks with your wardrobe? Bianca Darmanin helps you get ready for any festive occasion.

Christmas lunch Nothing cuddles you up to the idea of Christmas than bundling up in a cosy coat. This season’s oversized and bubble-sleeve coat trend is perfect for covering up, especially after that extra one or two servings of Christmas pudding. Try wearing it with something a little more fitting like tailored trousers or an A-line skirt with a tucked-in shirt or loose jumper. Add a touch of red and some kitten heels and you’ve got yourself a perfect morning to evening look.

Staff party The office do can be a little bit tricky. It all depends on the venue. If it’s just a casual dinner or drinks with your workmates, then I suggest you keep it simple and cute in this peplum hem skirt. Whether it’s high waisted, mini or pencil, just make sure to keep it classy. Just because it’s not office hours, it’s not a jail-free card situation to wear anything shorter than your usual work attire. Wear it over some patterned or opaque tights, balance it out with a cute knitted top or something sequined and maybe some metallic shoes to add just the right amount of festive fun to your outfit.

ELYTS

New Year’s Eve If finding the perfect New Year’s Eve dress has become as impossible as finding Neverland, and as frustrating as having to strap on a bracelet with one hand, you are not the only one. This year, I decided to ditch the dress hunt and try something a little different – tailored trousers, sleek blazer, bustier. Effortless glamour in the form of a tux, and if I might add, just as sexy as a little black dress. Go for this season’s top trend, black and white, to create a perfect, sophisticated outfit and add bright red or a dark berry lipstick if you’re more daring. And you know what the best part is? The near to zero possibility of bumping into another girl wearing the same outfit.

Christmas Eve They might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but feathers have been spotted on many high fashion catwalks and collections for this season. Feathers are a feminine, extravagant yet elegant embellishment to any outfit. And what better time to wear them than on Christmas Eve for that extra shimmery look. Match any feathered skirt with a simple shirt or silk camisole. Keep it glamorous by adding some bold accessories and simple strappy sandals if you dare to bare in the cold. If it’s a dress then don’t wear any fancy jewellery and just let the feathers do the talking. FM

Natural beauty North American correspondent Sean Patrick Sullivan interviews Canadian nutrition expert Lina Williams, who reveals her secrets to looking and feeling better through pantry staples used in surprising new ways. Photography by Jeff Nguyen.

F

alling into the same beauty supernova category as Sharon Stone, Salma Hayek, and Halle Berry, Lina Williams (nee Spagnuolo) is spectacularly, breath-takingly, almost unbelievably attractive. May I be candid? We’re friends, but sometimes, when I see her face, I want to poke it with my finger, just to make sure it’s real. On an average day, this nutrition expert’s stickstraight raven-coloured hair glimmers and glistens as though freshly oiled and ironed. Her eyes, wide-open and reflective like a Japanese cartoon fantasy, have the clarity of a newborn baby’s. And then there’s her skin, which as you might expect by now, is dewy, radiant, tight, and flawless. Then there’s the body, or shall I say, The Body. Reflective of a new, more empowered and superheroic femininity, she’s lean and muscular, though nonetheless chic and elegant. Given these gifts, it makes perfect sense that Williams, born and raised in a secluded rural village just under two hours from Toronto, would begin her career as a model and actress. While hitting all her marks for this article’s requisite cover shoot, she says how, “It seemed like an ideal way to see new things, to become different people. But after a while, it felt kind of empty.” That’s when she walks over to the make-up table, decides she doesn’t like any of the lip colours available to her, and unceremoniously gets to work mixing a custom stain from locally sourced beeswax and rich mineral pigments. “You know what was so much more interesting?” she continues while applying with a brush. “Hair. Make-up. Wardrobe. Not in a stupid, superficial way. It

was like art, or a craft, and I soon realised these trades could be used to make anyone look and feel better.” As so often happens, her emerging career in theatrical cosmetics and special effects make-up eventually expanded into fitness coaching and wellness consulting. Then there was her full-circle moment, when she took inspiration from her own mother, a former caterer, and decided to expand into home-cooked, locally-sourced, freshly-prepared frozen and freeze-dried meals. “My father’s family was from Bari, my mom’s from Calabria. So, growing up in my house, the third language was English, the second language was Italian, and the first language was food. I mean that literally. Every time someone put food on the table, conversation sparked. “When I went to other kids’ homes, where it was all about fast food and microwaved dinners, I just didn’t get it. Food is health, ritual, comfort, a form of communication, the medium of family, the message of love. How could you not make a big deal out of it?” This inability (or perhaps, unwillingness) to comprehend the reduced significance of food in North American culture fuels her current formulation projects, all for an as-of-yet-unnamed line set to softlaunch in the spring of 2014. “Your body is your vehicle, and you only get one of them,” she says. “So I’m taking this venture very seriously. I’m being very self-critical and perfectionist. When friends tell me to lighten up, I appreciate it, but I have to brush it off. Because it’s a gigantic honour to be welcomed into a stranger’s home, to be trusted to feed their family. I have to get this right.”

W E I VR E TN I

Along with the support of her equally entrepreneurial and devastatingly handsome husband Tim – they were high school sweethearts, believe it or not – Williams’s mission is to provide hardworking, time-pressed families with well-balanced, locally sourced delights. What’s more, her initial packaging sketches have taken the form of nutritional infographics, so young people have something colourful and educational to look at while their supper is heating up.

“Growing up in my house, the third language was English, the second language was Italian, and the first language was food.” “People work very long and very hard in Canada. I just want to help them have what I had as a child. Hopefully, by cooking a little less during the week, families will have more time for conversation. Then there are always the weekends. For people who didn’t grow up with elaborate Sunday dinners like I did, we’re considering a cookbook. For people who never really cooked before, it’s a lot more fun to learn on the weekends. You can stay home, weave in and out of the kitchen, tending to a five-hour lasagna while doing other things. When you go back to work on Monday, you feel so rested, satisfied, and refreshed. It’s a nice life.” That cookbook may or may not happen right away, as pre-launch interest in the frozen foods line has been unexpectedly high. But Williams already has an inventory of recipes for more snacky, casual ways to enhance one’s health, beauty, and attractiveness through food. Here are some of our absolute favourites. FM Sean Patrick Sullivan is the co-founder and development director of The BAO House, an interdisciplinary creative-services studio in Ontario, Canada. As FM’s North American correspondent, he writes about beauty, fashion, celebrity, sexuality, mass media, and popular culture.

Delicious Seeds for fuller hair

It seems as though everyone recommends adding greens to shakes and smoothies. Williams is no exception – except that she doesn’t think they’re enough for maximal beauty benefit. “It’s all about seeds. Flax, pumpkin, sunflower – for the past year, I haven’t blended a beverage without them. My hair is so much fuller and thicker now. And I may sound crazy, but I think it’s more darkly and richly pigmented too.” Tim nods his head and says “me too”. May I be candid? He’s right and the effect is even more pronounced with a short haircut.

Lemon for clearer eyes

Williams begins every single morning with a large mug of boiled, purified water, into which she squeezes the juice of one whole lemon. The lemon carcass can be boiled in more water on the stovetop to eliminate cooking odours, she tells me. According to her traditional Chinese medicine textbooks, it activates the liver and purifies the kidneys, resulting in clearer eyes and a host of other benefits.

Honey and yoghurt for smoother skin

Twice a week, Williams mixes a tablespoon each of raw honey and full-fat probiotic yogurt. Then she applies to her freshly washed face and leaves it on for at least an hour. When she rinses it off, the results are luminous. “Honey has been a facial skin remedy since the days of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It plumps, softens, hydrates, and exfoliates. The yoghurt also exfoliates, especially if it’s a little sour.”

Coconut oil for everything

Remember a couple of years ago, when coconut oil as an allin-one beauty treatment exploded in popularity? That may have been the result of Williams buying every jar in sight, slathering it on her hair, face, body, hands, feet, and nails and encouraging her clients to do the same. “It’s so universally effective and so affordable too. ELYTS Pretty little things December is all about food, festive fun and lots of fashion. ‘Tis the season to dress up. Staff parties, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and all the other fun in between can leave even the most seasoned stylista with a wardrobe meltdown. What we need is to have a selection of easy to wear pieces that will instantly add some pizzazz to your outfit.

1. Cara Delevingne @caradelevingne Backstage, on stage or just hanging with the coolest kids in town, Cara got it covered.

The bold brooch: pin to shirt collar. Very YSL!

3. W Magazine @wmagazine The most beautiful photo shoots – where art meets fashion.

The IT heel: opt for a platform for extra comfort.

4. ASOS @asos Amazing for keeping up-to-date on the latest trends and fashion news. The structured blazer: wear with a cute girly dress for a quirky contrast.

Luscious lips: turn daytime make-up into a sexy nighttime look with just one effortless slick of bold colour.

he tree is up, the stars are shining, and the list of gifts scribbled and sent. Yes, you’ve read the clues – Christmas is here. There’s just one thing missing though – the perfect party outfit. While traditionally, the festive season inspires a wardrobe of ruby, emerald and golden outfits, black is the more elegant and flexible of palettes. A black outfit will carry you through – in style, of course – all your office parties, family dinners and drinks with friends. As Karl Lagerfeld once said, “One is never overdressed or underdressed with a little black dress.” And that’s the best thing about black – it may be one colour, and yet its versatility shines like a rainbow. You can endlessly accessorise a black outfit in any way you want with bright pops of colour and funky, chunky jewellery to completely transform it. Before you embark on your quest to find the perfect ebony number, here’s why it should be your shade of choice this Christmas. For the professionally trendy there is the never-ending search to find the latest trendy colour. And yet, this task can be unrewarding as the minute the latest shade is adopted, it almost immediately has to give way to a younger colour. However, black can never be replaced. Black is the star of a modern wardrobe, and has been so through the ages. During the 16th century, for instance, King Henry VIII paid a couple of visits to his divorce lawyer, the Spanish and their Armada tried to show the world who’s boss and failed, and William Shakespeare jotted down a few stories. These events may have played some part in history but none so much as the introduction of black clothing which was worn for mourning in Europe and America by the elite.

Black was then a mark of social status as it was typically worn by the higher classes due to the fact that black dye was very expensive. In those days owning a pair of black trousers was the equivalent of revving your new Porsche 911 on the Sliema front. Throughout the centuries black evolved. It started off as the chosen colour of attire during times of bereavement, but became a sort of display of status. In the 1950s, it was the cool colour of choice for the beat generation, who put on their black berets and polo necks to hang out in coffee shops playing bongos, reciting poetry, experimenting with dubious substances, and dunking their opinions in endless cups of politics. Black has rejuvenated itself over and over again, and is worn today as both a classic choice and as a symbol of non-conformity. As the late Johnny Cash once said, “I wore black because I liked it… it’s my symbol of rebellion against a stagnant status quo.” Black is sophisticated, black is empowering, black is timeless. Remember, if you’re feeling lost this Christmas, black will always be there for you because, well, black is the new black. FM

BUDGET QUEEN

Tweedledum and Tweedledee

T

Lara Boffa has a need for tweed and turns her good hope into two capes.

he number of sisters in the Budget Queen family rises exponentially during the month of December. Students, mothers and the charity shop regulars are joined by those ladies (and sometimes gents) who fork out way too many pennies on gifts, dinners and other festive shenanigans, causing their allocated everyday wardrobe funds to disappear into thin air. In an attempt to save these fellow budget buyers from suffering the implications of not being clad enough to face a teeth-chattering winter, I decided to focus on a fabric that is warm, stylish and wearable yet sometimes hard to encounter on Inexpensive Street. Tweed is the fabric in question. Since it reminds me of the timeless Chanel jackets, I tend to swoon at the mere thought of anything in tweed. I would wear tweed underwear if I could, but that’s not exactly a good idea is it? This rough, unfinished, woollen fabric, commonly utilised by the British upper classes in the past, tends to come in interesting colour combinations that may touch complementing or contrasting sides of the colour spectrum. Tweed is a wise choice for anyone really, but for budget-conscious people in particular. The fabric is incredibly durable – I dare say eternal – which means you’ll be able to use the pieces year after year. Additionally, if you play your cards well and opt for an easily wearable shade, you will inevitably find yourself pairing it with most outfits and colour combinations in your wardrobe. The problem is finding tweed at a good price as it can be slightly expensive. So off I went to my local favourite charity ship. I swear I’ve spotted hundreds of tweed numbers here during my lifetime, but the one time I went specifically to buy a tweed piece, they were nowhere to be seen. It’s either a case of leaving my luck at home, I thought, or else I’m training my budget-conscious readers too well and they’re now emptying the rails before their teacher. Heavy-hearted and singing sad songs, I reluctantly paced my way to the door – just like a two-year old would stomp his way out of a room when his mother refuses to give him ice cream – consoling myself that I would have better luck next time. Then there it was, the fabric basket. All alone in a corner very close to the exit, a wicker basket full of textiles in all prints, patterns and shades seemed to invite me to dig in. As you can safely assume, it took me around three nanoseconds to grab that basket and rummage through it for some tweed as if my life depended on it. Can you picture someone finding a basket full of food in the middle of the desert after days of starvation? Same reaction. It was quite a sight. Always check the fabric sections in charity shops. They are probably the most underrated nooks in these stores. No one ever praises them enough. After unearthing the compulsory overly sequined fabric from the 1980s, as well as the omnipresent piece of black polka dotted material, my eyes feasted on two pieces of tweed. My hands quickly followed my eyes’ direction. There they were, one in plaid, the other in grey. Turned out Lady Luck was on my side after all. Plaid and grey! The first is the pattern of choice this season, the second is probably one of the world’s most versatile colours and a perfect alternative to the (obvious) black. After handing €4 to the cashier – yeah, ridiculously cheap I know! – I rushed home to wash the fabric. After a couple of hours of contemplation, I decided that these fabrics needed to be transformed into capes – not only because they can be layered over pretty much anything, but also because I have quite a thing for them. A couple of days later – thanks to the talented fingers of my Magic Mama – I wore them out while Christmas shopping. Ka-ching! FM

here is something truly magnificent about the art of storytelling and finding one’s own personal medium through which to do it. Having acquired a deep passion for fiction at a very young age, I have always found great companionship in the wonderful honesty that lies in all things creative, and in those who are able to portray it through various means. I began modelling and writing at roughly the same time, upon entering my teenage years, a time when many start swaying towards one thing they truly wish to devote themselves to. I believe I stepped towards these two passions so eagerly due to my fascination with the freedom they both provided me to portray so many different people, scenarios and ideas. Ever since I first picked up a pen and adopted another persona’s character and stance, I have found great pleasure in allowing my imagination to soar. As a model, I tend to seek out people who are truly eager to dive into their imaginative pools as deeply as possible, and explore ideas which embrace the creative power that they hold. For one may not realise how much power they truly hold within any creative field. I have always made it a point to look, feel and act as an entirely different persona when on a shoot, in order to truly portray the ideas and messages that beg to be set free. “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you,” Mary Angelou wrote. I have always believed this, and therefore hold it of great importance to always ensure that every story is told to the greatest of its ability.

36 - Femme December

The process of creating a great and powerful shoot starts well before the photographer starts snapping away. In order to develop the story itself, concept or mood boards are compiled and created, as a means for everyone included in the creation of the shoot to be able to share their ideas and allow their imagination to flow. There is no greater source of fuel for the creative mind than inspiration. Images and videos are shared and discussed, the mood is played around with and the scenes envisioned. The story begins to unfold and the foundations built. Once the story begins to take shape, the styling of clothing and photography is considered and developed. Every person working on the shoot will have their own personal and interesting styles, which is generally what will greatly contribute to making the end result so unique and intriguing. These varying styles are what allow me to adopt the physical and mental image of the particular persona that I would be portraying, and what allow me to do it truthfully. Once all styling and concepts have been decided, the date is set and imaginations are left to simmer. On the day of any

shoot, I am once again briefed on the identity which I will be portraying. The days which I enjoy most are those that focus on a solid storyline, and which require concentration on shifts of emotion and physical expression. There is a lot that can be spoken of through a slight variation of look in the eyes to a tweak in posture; using every glance and movement as a manner of speaking without having to use any words. There are times when there is also a play in contrasting emotions: a mixture of grace and madness, elation and anger, panic and serenity-contorting generic feelings in order to generate reactions within the final viewers of the images. After all, a story is best told when the observer or reader is moved to consider and think about it. To leave the story, however it is told or portrayed, with questions and an increased level of inspiration within their own imaginative pools. As a model and writer, and most importantly as a person, I am constantly inspired by all that my days offer me. To be able to inspire and provoke other minds through the means that I have chosen is an honour in itself, and is something that I hope to do for as long as possible. FM

aby, it’s cold outside. Well, it’s winter after all. The solution is to invest in a new coat or jacket. Coats and jackets are one of the season’s major investments, and not just financially. A lot of thought goes into choosing the right number. Being winter staples, coats and jackets are items which we wear to various occasions and over a number of looks. And that means that coats and jackets need to be versatile enough to complement every outfit and yet unique enough to carry the kind of personality that helps you make an entrance. This season, coat and jacket designs vary. The oversized coat is especially popular. It’s big yet feminine – bulk still carries softly curving shoulders and wraps you in a shapely silhouette. For added luxury, go for rich cashmere mixes that make you feel oh so feminine.

For those who are looking for a sportier look, go for the tomboy version. This season, parkas and bombers are bold and bright – also cue tough zip fastenings, wide hoods and deep pockets for a streetwise transformation. Sleeveless coats are another big hit. Admittedly, it’s not the most practical option. However, as seen on Victoria Beckham’s catwalk, what it loses in practicality, it gains in style. It’s the perfect look for an evening of elegance. The classic favourites are back this season. Leather jackets, for instance, have lightened up their mood and come in shades of pink and winter white, as well as a selection of textures, varying from lambskin to faux leather. They look especially good on leggings and a baggy sweater combo. Trench coats have also undergone a makeover, with two-toned, colourful and leather options. However, trench coats have maintained their vintage, film noir elegance. Go on – cuddle up with this season’s jackets and coats. FM

STYLEWISE

What I know about style Fashion blogger Daniel Azzopardi is a man with a fashion mission.

What is your first fashion-related memory? That’s a hard one. Fashion has always been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. But I think the oldest fashion memory has got to be me flipping through Vogue at my very first hairdresser when I was like eight and thinking, “Why can’t boys wear that? I so would.” The rest is history.

Daniel’s rules of style

Style is a visual expression and should always be an extension of your personality. It’s always a good idea to follow your instinct. Style and fashion do go hand-in-hand. Style shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Please have fun with style.

What did your wardrobe look like when you were young? Not pretty. Like most kids, I didn’t have any fashion available when I was growing up so my wardrobe was full of needs rather than wants. That usually ended up with me going through mum’s closet for vintage jackets and coats I could wear myself. I think she saw my sartorial style coming from a long way. And what does it look like now? It’s definitely another story now – cue a lot of flashy investment pieces, mix-and-match staples and loads of outerwear. And quality over quantity, always. Girls usually love my wardrobe. What first pushed you to click the publish button? To be honest I was bored with my day-to-day routine and a lot of people were telling me I had a very unique and interesting style and that I was entertaining. So a fashion blog was kind of the obvious choice as my creative outlet. Where are you taking your blog next – or where is it taking you? I have a lot of projects and brand collaborations on the horizon, namely more from my partnership with Balenciaga. The dream is to take my blog overseas and represent Malta among the big fashion stars. What’s the local fashion blogging scene like? Very small but very diverse. What’s on your bedside table? This season’s UK Elle Collections, my iPad and the ever-present cup of green tea.

Favourite wardrobe item ever? My Balenciaga cut-out boots. It’s no wonder Vogue called them the best boots of all time – they literally go with and elevate any outfit. What will you be wearing this season? A lot of leather, plaid and denim. Back to basics but in a fresh new way. FM

G o o d mo v e Pop artist Chess is no fashion pawn. What came first in your life – music or fashion? Music and fashion entered my life simultaneously and with a passion. While listening to my mother playing the piano beautifully, I would be carefully choosing what I was going to wear that day. My grandmother always taught me about the importance of fashion and to always to be confident, but never vain.

Would you wear boyfriend-inspired fashion? Yes, I love my boyfriend jeans, oversized jumpers, shirts and suits. I even own a bow tie.

Does your music inspire your wardrobe, or vice-versa? I dress according to how I feel. My music is also a reflection of how I feel so both cross over. My first EP Babygirl was very bubblegum pop so I felt most appropriate in low cut jeans and a country-style white crop top with minimal make-up and long straight hair. My second EP Tuxedo is more edgy, and so I’m going for darker colours and sharper edges, in both make-up and clothing, paired with more daring wardrobe choices.

What is your current favourite wardrobe item? My new River Island leather jacket with a white faux fur collar and trim – it’s an early Christmas present from my man.

Shopping in London – heaven or hell? Oxford Street can be quite stressful, but I love those little vintage stores you can find in Soho. One little find can make me so happy. FM

What would you never wear? Tartan and Crocs. Tartan Crocs would be my worst nightmare. How involved are you in the London fashion scene? My make-up artist, Natasha Berthoud, has done make-up for London Fashion Week in the past so she’s very up to speed with what’s on trend in London and how to apply it to my photo shoots, videos and gigs. I’m also looking to work with talented designers from London College of Fashion as a project to showcase their talent through my music.

Your forthcoming EP, Tuxedo, carries androgynous overtones – what has inspired this focus on sexual ambiguity? Skin, the lead singer from Skunk Anansie has always inspired me, both musically and through what she wore. I think through common perception, males come off as having a stronger persona, so dipping into their wardrobe can give you the look of a certain attitude which may be perceived as strong, determined, fearless and confident.

What are your favourite trends this season? I love the punk look as seen on the Versace catwalk. I think Victoria Beckham’s new collection is fabulous and I would wear each and every item.

Are you a guerrilla shopper or do you plan your shopping trips? Unless I need something for an event or shoot, I don’t plan my shopping. I normally pop in when I see something I like in the window or in a magazine.

BEAUTY

L o o k i ng y umm y You look what you eat, says Lenah Caruana.

C

hocolate anyone? Or maybe a honey infused sweet or a hot cup of good morning coffee? Most of us would say yes to such treats – they make us feel better and in some cases we might even look for their health benefits in order to feel less guilty after indulging in chocolate-covered almonds or after finishing that fourth cup of black coffee. Various foods are beneficial for our body and general well-being and are part of our diet in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Which is why seeing the same foods in beauty care products doesn’t seem very strange at all. After all, what’s good for the inside must be good for the outside, right? While that’s true, most skin care products claiming to provide our skin with all the benefits of berries, honey and other edibles are unfortunately often too diluted and combined with synthetic ingredients for us to gain the full benefit of that particular fruit or food. Most likely we are well aware of this, but who can resist a strawberry scented shower gel? In those moments we tend to go for the scent rather then looking at what it does for our skin. However, knowing the difference between the benefits of eating a type of food and what it actually does to our skin might make you look at the fruit section at the supermarket with new eyes. Today, food-based beauty products are increasing in popularity. Thankfully, as we’re becoming more aware of the negative effects of harmful toxins and over-diluted products, several skin care companies are joining the trend of producing only organic, fair trade, all-natural beauty care, incorporating ingredients that we can find on most people’s menus. Some companies even go to the lengths of saying their products are 100 per cent natural. Hopefully more will follow, leaving syntheticbased products to slowly vanish. Although this is very positive, it’s sometimes hard to find exactly what we are looking for and instead of spending extra time and money, we resort to the familiar easy-access products from the store. In this case, indulging in a spot of DIY is definitely an option worth trying if you are up for some beauty-related lab time in the kitchen. It’s wallet-friendly, free from toxins and kind of fun. Dark chocolate, for instance, is good for our health when eaten in moderation, as it is high in vitamins and is known to lower blood pressure and give us a feel-good kick. What it does to our skin however is another thing – it combats the number one beauty

enemy of all time, which is stress. Cocoa helps reduce stress hormones, meaning less collagen breakdown in the skin, fewer wrinkles and a vital source of nutrients for the skin. This is well known and has been used in skin care products for a long time. However, when mixed with a million other things, it’s hard to truly notice what does what in a product. So, eating a piece of dark chocolate has great health benefits on the inside, but what about covering yourself in chocolate for an anti-stress treatment at the beauty salon? Sounds amazing – and you don’t even have to count the calories. Instead your skin will thank you for a well needed moment with a calming, soothing effect. If the spa is not an option, go for a 10-minute face mask at home and forget about the myth that chocolate can cause spots, as research shows no link between chocolate and break-outs. Caffeine is nature’s alarm clock, waking us up from snoozing through the day – it is also frequently showing up in beauty products due to its tightening and antioxidant effects on the skin. A quick mix of sugar, ground coffee, olive oil and vanilla extract could be just what your body needs to get rid of dead skin cells. What might look like a recipe for a cake could actually work wonders when turned into a body scrub. Avocado is another friendly fruit that packs health benefits and surprisingly aids weight loss, mainly due to the fact that monounsaturated fatty acids are more likely to be used as slow burning energy than stored as body fat. The slow burning energy makes us feel full for longer and keeps us from snacking, but don’t go overboard as it’s also high in calories. When it comes to skin benefits, avocado is full of nourishing essentials that keeps the skin soft and prevents dryness. When mixed with honey and natural yoghurt, it also makes for a great DIY face mask. Honey works as an antibacterial on the skin and leaves it feeling smooth and soft, while the natural yoghurt is said to reduce acne and act as a relief from sunburn and discoloration. These are only a few of all the natural skin-friendly foods that are worth getting to know better and give more attention to. Just remember that trying new things on your skin can cause breakouts or rashes, so go gently before you cover yourself in chocolate. Start by trying it on a small skin patch and remember not to eat it before it hits the rest of your face. FM

LAST WORD

Blogger Elaine Anderson on how she found her online beauty spot.

Face on Name: Elaine Anderson Age: 27 Profession: Online marketeer by day, beauty blogger by night

Why Malta? I first came to Malta in December 2008 for a break with a friend and loved it so much I decided to stay. I have been living here ever since. Have you always been interested in beauty and fashion? I’ve always been interested in beauty from a young age. I remember being around 12 or 13 when Collection 2000 launched their plumping lip gloss and I went straight into town and around all the shops until I found one. As for fashion, I followed trends a lot more when I was younger – now I’m all about key pieces that are timeless classics. Quality over quantity. What are your morning and evening beauty routines? I’m a big fan of skin care, so I make sure I look after my skin day and night. In the morning I start with a hot cloth cleaner in the shower, followed by moisturiser with SPF and then my daily make-up, not forgetting lip balm. In the evening when it’s time to take it all off again, I start by using an eye makeup remover. Then I wash the rest of my face with a cleaner, a quick once over with some toner and then, depending on what my skin needs, either a hydrating overnight mask or moisturiser and some lip balm. What is the one beauty product you cannot go without? This is a tough one, but I think if I just had to pick one it would probably be mascara. What inspired you to start your own blog? I had been reading American and UK blogs for about six months, but it was difficult to get a lot of the products they raved about here in Malta. Initially I wanted to talk about finding UK products in Malta and where to buy them, but over time the blog evolved into so much more than that. What feedback do you get from your readers? I get a lot of positive feedback – nowadays, most people look for reviews about products before buying, so I

always try to give them my honest opinion and as much information as possible on the products. I enjoy getting feedback from my Maltese readers and sharing my finds, especially when they didn’t know they could buy a certain product in Malta. What is the one beauty product you wish someone would invent? Over the last few years the beauty industry has really grown and I’m suddenly finding products I need that I didn’t know existed before. Nowadays there is a product for almost everything – but if I had to pick something I would probably want a hair dryer that dries my hair completely in under a minute. It would save so much time for a lot of women I think. What are the main make-up trends this season? Going into winter, we’ll be seeing a lot of darker shades. Dark reds and plums are always a personal favourite. I love a bold dark lip to be the feature of my winter looks. What beauty products do you have in your handbag? I wish I could tell you I carry a make-up bag around with me but I don’t. I sit in an office all day in front of a computer. My make-up tends to last me the working day and when it doesn’t it’s not a big deal as I’ll just be heading home afterwards. That said, I always carry lip balm, lip gloss and lipsticks in my bag. What maintenance regimes do you suggest we adopt for winter? Now that it’s getting cold, we need to adapt our skincare routines to cater for the colder weather. I would suggest using a hydrating facemask at least once a week and applying a hydrating lip balm regularly to prevent chapped lips. Try to avoid petroleum-based balms as these act as a barrier rather than a hydrator. Also keep on using a moisturiser with SPF – even if the sun isn’t there, your skin is still exposed. FM
