NOVEMBER 2013 WELCOME
8 Deconstructing Dahlia
t’s like putting on a new outfit for a special evening. You start planning from two hours before, buff and pamper your skin till it glows, and then put on every item, bit by bit, and look in the mirror – perfect. That’s how we felt like putting together this revamped issue of FM. There are plenty of changes in the new FM. First of all, there’s the new design – adventurous yet complementary to the content. Speaking of content, we have brought on board Malta’s hottest bloggers and stylists, who showcase this season’s hottest trends. There’s also a new way of getting your copy of FM. We are now distributing to Malta’s top fashion outlets, hairdressers and beauticians. Which means that while you’re out shopping for the latest trends or giving yourself some me-time, you can get a copy of your favourite fashion magazine. In this issue of FM, we interview Dahlia Schweitzer. Social critic, erotic novelist, and cabaret performer, Dahlia talks about her various interests, life as an artist in Berlin, and searching for connections. Budget queen Lara Boffa focuses on her pattern of choice, plaid, while Gayle Cutajar upgrades that humble accessory – the baseball cap. Lenah Caruana gives us precious advice on how to prepare our skin for winter and Luke Engerer draws up his hot list. Read on and enjoy.
Sean Patrick Sullivan interviews his best friend and occasional muse – the social critic, erotic novelist, cabaret performer, university professor, and all-around enigma Dahlia Schweitzer.

ay I be candid? My relationship with Dahlia Schweitzer is warm and caring, supportive and affirmative, in all the ways it should be with one’s best friend. That said, it’s also quite bizarre. When I’m reminded of Dahlia – which is often, as her Twitter, Facebook, and Wordpress feeds are relentless in their frequency, brilliant in their observations – the very first things that come to mind aren’t the fun times we’ve spent together. Actually, there haven’t been very many of those. Here’s why. For most of the 13 years we’ve known one another, we’ve lived in different countries, symptomatic of our unquenchable thirst for reboots, our inability to enjoy an extended summer holiday doing nothing at all like everybody else. That’s because Schweitzer – a well-heeled, world-travelled social critic, erotic novelist, and cabaret performer, not to mention, in the opinion of LA Weekly, one of the 10 hottest university professors in Los Angeles – is, just like me, a little too committed to her work. I mean that in the best possible way – it’s what bonded us on our very first day working together, in the summer of 2000, at an interactive-advertising agency in New York City’s financial district. The field of digital creativity was new for both of us. I more or less stuck with it throughout the years, while she eventually felt too confined by the sexy-secretary milieu (and Manhattan’s outrageous cost of living) and fled to Berlin, where she blossomed as a performance artist, nightclub promoter, and bohemian seductress, her fame extending to Israel, Istanbul, and other markets clamouring for her icy electronic rendition of Madonna’s Burning Up as well as her own dance-floor sensations Kiss, Plastique, and Love A Lover. After a few more years of increasingly polished musicianship, an invitation to pursue her graduate studies in Los Angeles prompted Schweitzer’s return to the US. So much closer, and yet still so far away, we started inventing opportunities to collaborate – I booked her as a muse and model on various fashion and beauty projects, while she called upon me to co-write an infamously tart critique of the contemporary art scene for Hyperallergic. We started producing, packaging, and publishing each other’s literary efforts. It wasn’t always fun – Schweitzer works far more quickly than I do, while remaining far less susceptible to crippling perfectionism. But it was most certainly always fulfilling, enriching, satisfying. For what Schweitzer offers me – and, I’d like to believe, everyone who reads her books and listens to her albums – is a mood, a perspective, a world view that connects the dots in ways that are thrilling and illuminating. That’s also what I like about her as an educator. Earlier today, in preparation for interviews related to her current megacycle of book launches (a total of five between now and February 2014), Dahlia and I fast-and-furiously exchanged correspondences in which I grilled her about her art, life, and outlook. Here are some of the highlights.
S u l l i va n
I know we’re just getting started, and I want to make this all about you, but I’m itching to know how it feels to be on the same campus (University of California at Los Angeles) where fellow polymath, performance artist, and Cindy Sherman fan James Franco has been known to learn and teach from time to time. I know you’re unfazed by celebrity, so I’m not talking about that. I’m more interested in your similarities – your exploration of artifice versus authenticity, the ways you manipulate and manufacture your own identities.
Schweitzer
I’ve always felt that artists move in parallel tracks, even when we don’t know, like, agree with, or talk to each other. We all see the same questions hovering on the horizon. We’re all looking for the same answers as well. James fascinates me for the I’ll-take-one-ofeverything approach he seems to have taken with his career. It irritates people. They can’t put him in a box. They want him to shut up and be an actor, but then he’s a writer. And a director. And a teacher. And an artist. And a model. And now he’s on The Mindy Project, a programme that’s already mind-blowing on its own. People have been frustrated with me for the same thing, for defying easy answers to the question “Who are you?” It’s gotten worse with social media. On Facebook, you need to latch onto pre-fabricated labels, categories, associations – preferably not too many – to glide through. I resist that while at the same time working through it. I think James is the same.
S u l l i va n
How does this manifest for you as a teacher? How do you remain enigmatic while assuming a role of authority and knowledge?
Schweitzer
It’s not as hard as you might think. I’m interested in many different things, so I can teach many different things, from screenwriting, photojournalism, and detective fiction to art history, gender studies, and public speaking. Plus every term there are different faces, different classrooms, different ways to teach the material.
S u l l i va n
How would you compare teaching versus performing versus writing for people you’ll never get to meet?
Schweitzer
Everything I do is about searching for a connection. That’s why I love it all – teaching, writing, performing, whatever. I want to be provocative, spark conversations, raise awareness, encourage people to ask questions about everything they otherwise take for granted: advertising, gender roles, political machinations. As foolish as it may sound, I’ve always wanted to change the world. I still do.
S u l l i va n
One person with whom you never really connected was (gender-bending glam-rock icon) Peaches. Can you tell us about that? The two of you were in Berlin at the same time, part of the same electro-cabaret movement.
Schweitzer
That’s so funny. I totally forgot about Peaches. She hated me for some reason, although she never said anything to my face. We had many mutual friends and even they couldn’t figure it out. Now that I think about it, I’m sure it pissed her off when she was trying to show Berlin off to (pop star) Pink, and all Pink wanted to do was stand and stare at this photo exhibition I had mounted in some bar. Then Pink went ahead and bought one of my photos – I’m sure that made it even worse. Her boyfriend ran (runs?) this huge club in Berlin called Rio. After that little incident, I was banned from performing there, no matter who tried to book me.
S u l l i va n
Tell me more about Berlin in general, how that city shaped and formed you.
Schweitzer
I was still young. I wanted to be a full-time artist before it was too late. Berlin was a city where that was possible. I told myself, when I moved there, that if I couldn’t make it as an artist, I wouldn’t even try to get a regular job. I’d just move back to New York. Luckily, that never happened. I always managed to get by! Berlin felt like a real bohemia, a small town and a big city at the same time, teeming with artists and intellectuals committed to their own expression and creativity. I loved it – but I eventually grew tired of being broke all the time. I didn’t want to be a starving artist, constantly on tour, when I was 40. Hello graduate school.
S u l l i va n
Speaking of which, you’ve just started working toward your doctoral degree in film and media. What’s next for you after that?
Schweitzer
I don’t know. I’ve grown suspicious of fiveyear plans. If you had asked me five years ago where I would be today, it wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be doing any of this. I thought I’d be married, with children, maybe teaching part-time. But life is funny – it likes to keep you on your toes. So now here I am, teaching and learning and blogging and performing.
Sullivan
...and still trying to change the world.
Schweitzer
That really is what I want – to change the world. Anyway, to answer your question, feel like it’s important for everyone, but especially artists, to give themselves freedom. You have to respond organically and authentically to what life gives you. FM

What inspired your interest in fashion? My mum has been my inspiration since I was young. She has always had her personal sense of fashion and she also passed on her passion for sewing and making clothes to me. When I look at old photographs of my mum, I always find myself saying, “I would so wear that.” And it’s not the first time that she looks at me and tells me, “I had something similar when I was your age.” Why The Fashion Carousel? I don’t believe in having one style. I like to try out various styles and what I wear always depends on my mood. One day I could be wearing a boho-inspired outfit and the next a sleeker, minimalistic look. So when deciding on a name for my blog I wanted something that reflects my constant need to change. My blog is basically a merry-go-round of all the different outfits and styles I like wearing. What do your readers tell you? Before I started my blog, I was worried that I would get trolled or receive nasty comments, so I made sure I was prepared for that. However, I always get good and constructive criticism – it helps me, and my blog, to grow. What did your wardrobe look like when you were young? Well, it’s not as big as it is now, that’s for sure. However, when I
was young, fashion wasn’t readily available locally. Nowadays, the younger generations are definitely more fashion savvy than I was 10 years ago. Moreover, low-cost fashion brands, online shopping, social media and blogs have all made people more interested to express themselves through fashion.
The BLOGGER Name: Bianca Darmanin Age: 23 Education: Architecture and Civil Engineering Profession: Junior architect
Do you plan your shopping trips or are you a guerrilla shopper? I like to keep within my monthly budget and I always plan my shopping trips. However, there are times when I might come across a great buy or something I’ve been looking for and which I simply can’t leave behind. Do you look at the price tag? That’s always the first thing I look at. I always go around the shops twice to compare and find the best prices. That said, when I’m buying an item I know will stay in my wardrobe for quite some time, such as a great pair of jeans or a classic black blazer, I don’t mind going over budget. Do you shop alone or in company? It takes me ages to decide and it’s not unusual for me to spend a couple of hours in one shop. Which explains why I mostly do my shopping on my own. What are you wearing this season? A lot of tartan. And I’ll probably be revisiting my 1990s wardrobe. FM

ack in my school days, I remember how most of my mates would dread returning to the ink-stained wooden benches after the summer recess. On the other hand, I always looked forward to going back to school, eager to savour the smell of my new set of copybooks, waiting to try out my new everyday school hairstyle and, most of all, longing to wear that plaid uniform I loved sporting every morning. With designers like Marc Jacobs, Moschino and Givenchy choosing plaid as their pattern of choice for AW 13/14, I now have the chance to recreate my back to school feeling – and I plan to do that often. It’s very hard not to fall in love with the plaid coats sent out on the catwalk chez Marc Jacobs, 3.1 Philip Lim and Versace. Moschino’s plaid blazers were out of this world, just like Saint Laurent’s plaid dresses and cardigans. Iconic, I must say.
The plaid trend is so varied in terms of pieces and structures that it allows us multiple interpretations. Yet when I was asked to identify the piece that would best suit the needs of my budget-conscious readers, I quickly crosshaired on the iconic plaid shirt. There are two main reasons which explain why a plaid shirt is the best way of hopping on the plaid bandwagon without breaking the bank. First, you can easily spot checked shirts at traditional Maltese markets for around a fiver. In comparison, the average price of an almost identical garment on the high street is €20 to €25. More than that, it’s the incredible wearability and versatility of the item that makes it stand out as the ideal budget queen plaid piece. Even if you were to spend a bit more on it, you can get the most out of a plaid shirt’s cost per wear factor as it can be paired with an endless number of combinations.

Unless you were living in a hole during the 1990s, you know that plaid shirts were the it item of the decade. People would either simply wear them with their jeans – mainly those of a distressed kind – and just head out to run their errands. You could also try to channel the 1990s by tying your shirt to your waist – it adds that nonchalant feel and it works like a charm as an added detail. A preppier way of walking down the plaid shirt route is to layer it under your favourite jumper and then maybe add a skater skirt of your choice. Some brogues maybe? Oh, and since we’re talking layering, I just love putting a plaid shirt over a top and underneath a blazer or a trench as an extra layer. It adds warmth and interest to your overall look. A natural tendency when we transition to autumn is to carry a cardigan with us just in case the situation gets slightly too chilly to handle. I suggest swapping that for a flannel plaid shirt, not only because it’s equally as warm, but it’s also trendier and more daring. Don’t be afraid to pair with other printed pieces – it will give your outfit that fresh, youthful twist we all appreciate and like to see. Checkmate. FM

STYLE
Skirting the issue From full and knee-length to pencil and mini, this season is all about skirts, says Caroline Paris.
I
’ve always loved skirts and dresses – when I was a child I was always hankering after one pretty dress after another and fought hard against the idea of any form of trousers or shorts. When I grew up and got my own shopping budget, nothing much changed and somehow new skirts and dresses seemed to constantly be finding themselves homes within my wardrobe. Over the last years however, something did shift and while my love for dresses never truly went away, it did wean slightly. It seemed as though the impossible had happened – designers and the fashion world in general had managed to convince me to turn a substantial amount of my fashion affection towards trousers and shorts. That’s not really surprising as, over the last seasons, the number of unique trouser and shorts styles churned out, both in summer and winter collections, has been impressive. It was probably a somewhat short-lived swing though and in fact it all looks set to go back full circle for me this new season as the skirt is back. Technically, skirts started making their welcome return a couple of seasons ago, but somehow they still seemed to be in the ever-soslight shadow of trousers. It was last February’s fashion shows that really put all the focus back on femininity and the skirt, and I must admit I eagerly lapped it all up with gleeful childish excitement. In the land of fashion, skirt is an umbrella term, as there are various skirt types, from miniskirts and knee-length skirts to floor-length and gypsy skirts. While the miniskirt can never truly go out of fashion, this season’s most popular length is right below the knee, right at that spot when the back of the leg starts
to curve in, just before the calf begins. Often referred to as a pencil skirt, this style is quite synonymous with the past ladylike glamour of the 1950s and epitomises the mysterious sexy allure of women that hasn’t seemed that much in vogue over the last decade. When I think of a pencil skirt, my mind conjures up images of dark smoky bars, detectives and sexy women holding the strings. For this year though, it’s not really about being feminine – at Gucci, the shape and style was all about power and structure. If you truly want to look fashionable you need to forget full on feminine and think a bit harder, a bit more masculine. Avoid wearing the traditional look – a pencil skirt paired with stilettos is a bit too Jessica Rabbit and will look a bit dated this season. On the other hand, leather ankle boots with a heavy, thick heel such as those seen at Celine are the perfect shoes to wear with a pencil skirt. Another modern take is to pair such a skirt with a graphic or logo sweater – wear this look to work for a twist on office wear or with a sequined sweater for a night out. For those who aren’t big fans, pencil skirts aren’t the only option – longer, flared, midlength skirts and shorter above-the-knee skirts were also seen on the catwalks. The more feminine high-waisted, pleated, mid-length skirts especially when done in metallic fabrics are also still very popular. The skirt suit is also all the rage this season – I’ve seen many styles with pencil skirts but I’ve also seen others with shorter hemlines, some with a tailored tight fit and others with a loose, lightweight, flared style. The important thing with a skirt suit is to belt it – designers belted their jackets and sometimes even their coats. In fact another trendy way to wear a skirt is with
a coat, maybe something knee-length or even waist-length. A boxy, masculine shaped coat is the perfect antidote to the feminine, tight, pencil skirt and will definitely put you on the fashion map. Always go for a defined waistline and add a belt. Whatever the skirt type, there’s a whole range of fabrics and designs. One of the best I’ve seen is at Preen by Thornton Bregazzi – it’s a leather skirt with zips that boasts an exciting mix of glamour and punk. Then of course there’s still the tweed skirt, which can be worn alone or as part of a tweed suit – this is a style which remains synonymous with Chanel. Another exciting style is the sequin skirt seen at Marc Jacobs. Sequins were once regarded as something only found on what a lot of people call eveningwear – however, a sequin skirt can look original and modern when paired with boots and knitwear, even during the day. From the winter stock already in the shops, you may have already realised that we are set to enjoy the monochrome trend for a little while longer, although we are also injecting a nice dose of red into the mix – we’ve got bright red, dark reds and that particular shade of red and brown that has about five different names. Then there’s also plaid and tartan. Tartan looks so beautiful when worn with black leather and a string of pearls and maybe also grunged up with some studs and other hardware. I lived in Scotland for a year and for some insane reason did not buy myself a Scottish skirt – this season I’m considering buying myself a plane ticket simply to go get a female kilt. Try on a couple of different skirt styles to get a feel of what suits you and what you feel most comfortable wearing. Whatever you choose wear it with poise and confidence. FM

Baseball caps are not just for bad hair days, says Gayle Cutajar.

e don’t really have a baseball scene in Malta. But for those who have experienced it first-hand, nothing beats watching a home run in the company of friends, hot dogs and a few cold ones. Not to mention having a very valid reason to wear a baseball cap, our favourite accessory. Baseball caps are no longer limited to a jog in the neighbourhood or a day at the beach. Rather, they are taking over our closets – whether you’re a sports devotee or not, incorporating a classic cap into your sartorial arsenal is an absolute must, for bad hair days and beyond. Don’t hesitate to wear a baseball cap on a suit, like yours truly, or on a maxi dress. The good thing about baseball caps is that they go on almost everything and anything and instantly amp up any outfit. Baseball caps have been a big hit on the runway for the last few seasons. From designers like Herve Leger and House of Holland to Stella McCartney and Max Azaria, this ongoing trend has become the captain of fashion. The key to this look is balancing sportswear with ladylike ensembles. From leather and sequins to prints and tweed, you’ll definitely find the right cap to complement your style. For a more classic look, pair a plain leather cap with a luxe sweatshirt over a pencil skirt. Now, if
“The key to this look is balancing sportswear with ladylike ensembles.” you’re a little bold like myself, then your collection of baseball caps will be more eye-catching. To make a statement, wear a tribal print hat with a form-fitting sequin dress or play off a monochrome look with a herringbone printed cap. I could go on and on, but just remember ladies, no need for the side-eye – baseball caps are no longer restricted to the gym. Men’s autumn/winter catwalk collections also include the baseball cap as a lead accessory. Dior Homme designer Kris Van Assche featured a baseball cap with every one of his 47 outfits. Other influential brands, such as Lanvin and Acne, have also included caps in their recent shows. Elgar Johnson, fashion editor at i-D magazine says baseball caps haven’t been this on trend since the late 1980s. “Baseball caps have always had a presence but not always in fashion circles. There are so many different forms of baseball cap now. Riccardo Tisci put them down the catwalk at Givenchy with ears on them which I uber adore by the way. The baseball cap has been heralding in the new sport influenced trends… it clearly shows that the baseball cap is here to stay, adding a casual and youthful flair to your outfit,” he wrote. This humble accessory has captured the imagination of the fashion pack, so go out, grab your favourite baseball cap and get your sporty spice on. FM

The hot list
Luke Engerer rounds up this season’s must-haves.
In the Navy
Navy and royal blue are the new black for the coming season. Classic, dark, rich navy blue is the key colour for the season. Wear it head to toe or mix with maroon, mustard or military green.
Tweed it
Typically a masculine wool fabric, this season tweed is reinvented in various shapes. Elegant and classy, a touch of tweed can take your outfit to the next level.
In print
A good print or a good mix of prints can really add fun to an outfit. Baroque prints are one key print trend but we’ve also seen a lot of hearts, stars and more playful prints. Mix it up and have some fun.
Light and fluffy
I love the feel of mohair. So soft and fluffy, mohair gives a blurry silhouette so even when used oversized, it doesn’t look heavy.

Round it up
Sweet rebel
Powder your coat
Tartan can transcend any outfit, from grunge to formal. This traditional Scottish bold check has been updated and given a modern twist.
Laid back, rebellious grunge from the 1980s and 90s has inspired this season’s catwalks. This revival is not quite punk and not all rock – rather, it’s a combination of both. Plaid shirts over studded leather and mesh, it’s like taking a trip back to the 1990s.
Ice cream
White, cream and ecru can really lift an otherwise dark winter day. It’s modern, chic and easy to wear.
Large rounded shoulders are really modern and look great. Inspired by the 1980s but more refined, softer and better proportioned.
Powder pink coats and jackets were very present on this season’s catwalks. Easy to wear with most of this season’s key colours. Works well with white, cream, military green and maroon.
Blend in
The camouflage print has been reinvented and comes in various designs. This trend blends well with the military and navyinspired trends too.

Moreover, being a transitional season, it can take its pick from the best of late summer and early winter. This season is all about contrast. Tartan army Come the cold season, the Scottish staple frequently makes its appearance. One of the most loved patterns, tartan is so eclectic that it can take you from girly to grunge in the blink of an eye. The palette is as colourful as can be – from red and green to blue and black, there’s a tartan pattern for everyone.

Bag this Three girls spill their handbag secrets to Christina Goggi.
Very few women are willing to reveal what they hold in their handbag – after all, it’s the one bottomless item which carries our most personal belongings. And yet, Marguerite Mifsud Magrin, Charlene Sciberras and Christine Fava are brave enough to unzip.
Charlene Sciberras
What does your handbag say about you? My handbags are a mix of style and elegance – they’re sophisticated, luxurious and bold, which in a way I believe they also describe my character. My friends always tell me that the way I carry or hold my handbag is similar to how one would carry their child. I treat my handbags with great care, never put them on the floor, clean them regularly, and most importantly carry them with pride. Time to spill the beans – what’s in the handbag you’re carrying right now? Wallet, mobile, make-up, keys, perfume, mints, pen, agenda, tissues, wet wipes, hair clip – I can never go out without any of these items, unless I’m carrying a small evening clutch, in which case I will have to survive. So when you need to make do with a smaller handbag, what are the absolute essentials? Money, mobile and make-up. Any embarrassing handbag episodes? Not really. I keep all my private items in a pouch that I take in and out of the handbag whenever I need something from it. I find this comfortable since I change handbags daily with every new outfit. Any handbag advice? Never buy fakes. If you don’t afford a designer handbag, go for a high street fashion brand, but never for a fake handbag. No matter how close-to-real fake handbags look, they’re still fake and make you look cheap. There are loads of brands which make good-looking handbags at very affordable prices.
Christine Fava
What does your handbag say about you? I’m Mary Poppins – I carry everything I possibly can in my handbag. Time to spill the beans – what’s in the handbag you’re carrying right now? Mobile, wallet, keys, make-up, wipes, sunglasses, tissues, deodorant, hair clip, some basic medicine, chequebook and a pen. Which are the items you always carry with you in whichever handbag you wear? Mobile, money, keys, make-up and tissues. Like most people I won’t go anywhere without money, keys and mobile. Carrying make-up helps me feel better just in case I need to look more alert, and tissues are always useful. Any embarrassing handbag episodes? Not that I remember – I like to keep my handbag closed as much as possible. Any handbag advice? If you needed it once you may need it again therefore always carry anything you needed in the past – you never know what might happen.

Marguerite Mifsud Magrin
What does your handbag say about you? My handbag is very much my personal organiser, so I would say I am somewhere between being practical and a hoarder. Time to spill the beans – what’s in the handbag you’re carrying right now? Since the handbag in question is my day-to-day work handbag, it is full of things I might need to get through the day. There’s nothing particularly exciting – purse, sunglasses, mobile phone, USB cables to charge my mobile phone and tablet, car keys, house keys, keys to my parents’ house and office keys, a variety of medicinal items (from painkillers to motion sickness pills and vitamins), lip balm, lip gloss and a small pocket mirror, an emery board and nail hardener, hair bands and hair clips, a notepad, notes and copies of articles that I intend reading at some point, pen, USB pen drive, iPod and headphones, random mail which I keep reminding myself I have to file at some point, a lot of receipts, and a lint roller to get rid of unwanted pet hair from my clothes. Actually, that’s quite a load. Which are the items you always carry with you in whichever handbag you wear? Aside from the obvious – phone, purse and keys - I always make sure that I have at least a dose of painkillers as I suffer from migraines. You will probably find them in all the handbags I tend to use frequently. Any embarrassing handbag episodes? I carry the lint roller around because of my cats, so it is pretty much a lifesaver. Once, I left it sticking out of my handbag at the office and was bombarded with all sorts of awkward questions. It was quite embarrassing. Any handbag advice? Go for handbags with plenty of pockets. BEAUTY
In fromthe cold Lenah Caruana helps you prepare your skin for winter.
A
s soon as spring turns into summer, a huge smile covers our faces as we get all busy with looking good. We stock a pile of glossies and consult all kinds of tips, from what to wear, where to hang out, and, of course, how to achieve and maintain a healthy, glowing skin. It is a hard slog – we have to drink plenty of water, use sunblock, and invest in shimmering bronzers and waterproof mascaras. But after all, that is the beauty of summer – at the end of a beautiful day, we look at our reflection in the mirror and feel pretty great, regardless if we remembered to apply that aloe vera after-sun cream or not. And the reason is very simple – in summer, we’re sun-kissed. In summer, our skin looks fresh and there’s barely the need for make-up. This means that our skin gets the chance to breathe. We find ourselves in a positive
The importance of drinking water will probably not be excluded from any skincare tips for winter – our body needs a refill regardless of the season. However, the difference is that in winter, we need a heavier moisturiser to lock the water in our skin, ideally one which is oil-based. You can also use pure argan oil as a base. If you find it too heavy or oily to combine with your make-up during the day, opt for a suitable night cream to
“Our skin is mainly made up of water and oils, and cold weather depletes both.” circle almost to the point of forgetting our important skincare routines. But that’s until summer slowly cools down, the tan fades and, seemingly from nowhere, dark circles and other unwanted spots start paying us annoying visits. Take them for what they are – a wake-up call to start preparing our skin for the cold weather. This is exactly where we are right now – the start of a cold season. And as the weather bites more deeply, we need to adapt to slightly different beauty routines. Cool rainy days and chilly winds all play a part in causing dry skin. Our skin is mainly made up of water and oils, and cold weather depletes both – it literally sucks the moisture out of our skin, lips and even hair.
do the job and find time to apply a hydrating mask once or twice a week. During the coldest months when we’re too gloomy struggling with chapped lips, dull skin and painfully dry hands, it’s easy to over-treat the skin with too much of everything in terms of lotions and creams. I believe that our approach should be to follow the basic rules of skincare without any exceptions – eat a balanced diet, use a good cleanser and moisturiser day and night, exercise, get enough sleep and stay hydrated. We should all know these all-year-round rules by heart – however, all too often we exclude them when we feel stressed.
Additionally, before the really cold weather hits, book an appointment with a dermatologist for a deep cleansing and hydrating facial and skin analysis. This way you can be sure that you start winter with a fresh skin and knowledge of what products are suitable for you in the coming months. In winter we might feel the need to use heavier makeup to create an even skin tone – however, try sticking to a hydrating BB cream that gives you a natural look and hydrates at the same time. Always remove your make-up before you go to sleep, as it will clog your pores if you sleep in it, causing outbreaks. Sleeping in your make-up also means giving up on the chance to replenish your skin with moisture overnight which is particularly important during winter. Avoid harsh peels, clay masks and alcohol-based toners, and go for deeply hydrating masks and cleansing milk or mild foaming cleansers. These are minor adjustments that might prevent extra dry skin. A common habit for many people is to over-wash their hands, leading to dry and cracked skin. Protect them by keeping a good hand cream handy wherever you go. Use a small amount, as too much tends to make the hands feel sticky and then we’ll have to wash our hands again. Also, applying nail oil around the cuticles before going to sleep can help reduce dryness. In more extreme cases, cold and dry weather causes eczema to flare up – speaking from experience, this can be very disturbing and painful. Avoid taking baths or having showers that are too hot and use mild soaps to soothe the skin. Hydrate while the skin is damp for best results. Also, stock up on caffeine-free teas with calming effects such as camomile and honey, read up on how to make homemade facemasks and maybe even book that facial appointment to get started. Enjoy the cosy season. FM

STYLEWISE
What I know about style Make-up artist Stefy Puglisevich takes out her colours.
When did you decide to specialise in make-up? It all started with a video on YouTube that a friend back in school told me I should check out. From there I created a blog and started experimenting with makeup and buying little goodies to build my collection. I just loved the creative part of it all and how you can express your mood through your look. What does make-up add to a look? It adds personality. Everyone applies make-up depending on their likings and what they feel comfortable in. Some like it bold and bright while others prefer to go for a conservative and natural look.
What are the main make-up trends for this season? The biggest trend is the bold cat eye, which gives eyes such a flattering, flirty look. Eyeliner is going to be a big hit this season, as seen on Michael Kors, Anna Sui and Versace catwalks. Dark-toned lips will also be a staple autumn trend. And don’t forget the more natural look, with just a flush of colour on the cheeks.
Stefy’s rules of style
What fuelled your interest in fashion? As a young girl, I would spend hours dressing up and trying on clothes. I used to love stacking my mum’s shoes and pretending I’m wearing high heels and feeling all ladylike. I would also switch to the style and fashion channels on TV and have a pile of fashion glossies to see what’s on trend.
What is your take on the London fashion scene? In my eyes London’s fashion scene is art. Everyone is their own person here and you can see so much of their personality just by looking at their outfit. They don’t care what others think – they just wear what they feel comfortable in. It’s amazing. What is, for you, the difference between style and fashion? Style is personal – you can look at what someone is wearing and see a hint of their personality. Fashion on the other hand is constantly changing and sometimes it can be very difficult to keep up with all the trends. It is whatever adverts and glossies showcase. What colour do you think suits you best? White and aqua-mint colours complement my skin and hair colour nicely. What trend would you never be seen in? I will never wear leggings as trousers. Leggings are there instead of tights, but people still wear them as trousers, even if they are see-through. Leggings look fantastic with a long jumper or a cute dress, but nothing else. FM
1 If you go monochrome add a bold red lip to add class to your outfit. 2 Wear what you feel comfortable in and buy items that suit your body shape. 3 Experiment and get out of your comfort zone, Mix patterns and don’t over-think it. 4 With jewellery, less is more – you don’t need 20 bangles on one arm. 5 Invest in a black blazer – it can make a white tank top and a pair of jeans look smart and sophisticated. Wardrobe essentials This autumn, Miss Selfridge launches The Collective, a collection of simple dressing and must-have transitional items. Inspired by simple 1990s styling, the collection features deluxe sporty shapes, sharp woven tees, joggers, longer line bomber and biker jackets and separates that provide easy outfit options. The collection focuses on a colour palette of optic whites, high shine metallics, sports fabrics, perforated surfaces and airtex. Leather pieces with lace panelling and faux leather trimmings add a grungy edge to feminine shapes, while single colour brights in hot bubble gum pink and vivid lime create statement pieces. Curved shoulders update t-shirt dresses while jersey becomes more draped and skirts have asymmetric details and wrapped fronts.

66 - Femme November
What inspired your interest in music? Music itself was the main inspiration. Ever since I was a little kid, I was always pushing buttons and turning knobs. I’ve always wanted to be a DJ. When did you take up DJing? I downloaded my first DJ software when I was just 11 years old. Then, when my passion got bigger, at the age of 15 I decided to learn how to use turntables and CDJs. Do you remember your first gig? I had only been DJing for two months when I got my first gig at Sky Club. There were over 2,000 people in the club and I was so excited and tense. It’s one of the memories that I will always cherish. How did you develop your own style? It took me quite a while, until I heard Axwell’s Feel the Vibe, which opened up a million possibilities. Although my style is always evolving, it was Axwell’s track that showed me the way. What is your favourite track of all time? That is a tough one. There are countless tracks and albums which have inspired me – if I had to choose one special track, that would be Calvin Harris’s The Rain. My favourite album is Discovery by Daft Punk.
When DJing, are you in control of the crowd, or vice-versa? It depends on so many levels – however, a DJ has to put people in a good vibe and make them experience a memorable night. Are you interested in fashion? I like to keep up-to-date with the latest trends. What do you have in your wardrobe? I have an unlimited selection of black jeans and black v-necks. Apart from that I also love leather jackets and high tops. Favourite wardrobe item? V-necks. What fashion style do you think suits you best? And what would you never wear? I’m quite a simple guy and don’t go for flashy outfits. Give me a pair of dark jeans, a leather jacket and my high tops and I’m happy. I especially love Topman. Upcoming gigs? I have a new club opening, where I’ll be the first DJ to play. The big event is then New Year’s Eve. I’m hyped up for this since it’s been over a year now that I’ve been working on my new tracks and collaborations. I’m looking forward to playing them at these events and see how people react to them.
