Trends are brighter, skins are glowing and people are more beautiful. For our summer issue, we interview Kevin Muscat, the Maltese designer behind the label Muscat London. Having built a strong career in dance, Kevin went on to study design and assist designer Stevie Stewart, before launching his own label. In his interview with FM, Kevin gives us a sneak preview of his upcoming collections.

Finding a pattern Following a successful dance career, Kevin Muscat has turned his creativity to fashion and launched his own label Muscat London. FM checks out his moves. From dance to fashion design – how was the journey? As a freelance professional dancer one ends up having down time in between contracts. In the last three years of my career, I started looking at courses and other things to do in these periods. I remember I was speaking to a designer friend of mine who, when I mentioned that I could sew, asked me if I would help him with his collection. We both quickly discovered that I was rather good and that we worked well together, so I carried on helping him whenever I was in between dance jobs. Some time later I met designer Stevie Stewart who also asked me to help her out on a job she was doing for a dance company. Her reaction was equally as positive and I started working for her too. With Stevie I worked on several high profile jobs including videos and concerts for Kylie Minogue, Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis, Girls Aloud and Westlife. During this time my interest in fashion increased and having decided this was what I wanted to do when I retired from dancing, I took a couple of short courses at Central Saint Martins. And, since I believe that it’s only practice that makes perfect, practise I did. From then I got my first studio and started doing jobs until I had enough work to turn self-employed. The Muscat London label has emerged in the last two years. In the meantime I carry on freelancing for other designers, designing costumes and more recently teaching at London College of Fashion.

Do you miss being on stage? The question I get asked most is whether I miss the dancing. Dancing was a big part of my life for over 10 years and I loved being able to channel my passion into a career. The move to design was an organic one and I’m as passionate about it as I was about dancing. I now really enjoy being behind the scenes, using my creativity in a very different way. I also like being in control of what I’m working on, while with dancing one is usually interpreting the choreographer’s brief. What is the result of combining your self-taught skills with those learned from Stevie Stewart? I consider myself very lucky to have had enough basic skills to be employed as an assistant. The advantage of this is that you learn the differences between being a home sewer and fashion designer. With Stevie I was able to observe management of staff, budget control, working to tight deadlines, being on set for films and video shoots, working with celebrities and stylists and the day-to-day running of a studio. In addition to this I read as many books as I could find on how to run a fashion business and pattern cutting. I also watched endless videos on different techniques and finishes. The end result is that I’m now experienced in all aspects of running my business, from cutting patterns to making clothes, sourcing fabrics and factories to branding and PR.

“I don’t think we ask enough questions about where our clothes come from.”

Does the fact of coming from a small island give you more perseverance to make it in a big fashion capital? I don’t know if it gives you more perseverance. What I do know is that I was never happy being a big fish in a small pond. I always wanted to broaden my horizons and experience the diversity of what happens in a large metropolitan city like London. This may mean that I sometimes get lost, but it also means that I’m competing with the best of the best and that makes me work even harder to succeed. How does it feel to see celebrities such as Cheryl Cole and Kylie Minogue wearing items that you have assisted in creating? It’s a wonderful feeling and makes the long days and nights worthwhile. It’s also a great reference point. It may not be my best work, but it’s the work that people are most familiar with. A main element in your creations is eco sustainability – how important is this value in today’s fashion world? The truth is I don’t know how important it is to clients and I’m finding out. I don’t think we ask enough questions about where our clothes come from. Where is the cloth being produced? What processes are being used? What effect do these processes have on the environment? Are the dyes hazardous to the environment? How far is the cloth travelling? Are the factories producing the clothes treating their employees ethically? Are they getting a fair wage? These are the questions that are important to me and which I keep in mind when designing my collections. How would you define the Muscat London woman? The Muscat London woman is confident, sensual but not overtly sexy. She invests in quality pieces that will stand the test of time.

What fabrics do you feel more comfortable working with? Because of my varied background in costume and fashion I’m experienced at working with many fabrics. The ones I’m attracted to more are natural fabrics, like silk and wool. I’m also interested in discovering new fabrics like bamboo and modal, and experimenting in ways they can be used. Colour, cut, texture – what element would you consider the most important in your creations? I don’t think one is more important than the other. They have to work together to create a harmonious collection. The silhouette together with intricate seams is what defines my style, followed by a restrained colour palette and interesting textures. You will shortly be launching your SS14 collection – what are the main inspirations for it? It’s too early to divulge what I’m working on for SS14. However, following the success of my print for AW13, I can reveal that I’m working on more prints for the next collection. I guess you’ll just have to wait and see!

“W

hen your friends begin to flatter you on how young you look, it’s a sure sign you’re getting old,” Mark Twain wrote. You may chuckle at this statement but in reality we all face the prospect of getting old. And it’s no fun when, one morning, we discover that our smooth skin is showing signs which are similar to wrinkles. And when we realise that they are actually wrinkles, it’s useless listening to some wise folk trying to persuade you that these are signs of sagacity. Forget sagacity – we all want to quench our thirst from the fountain of youth. It is futile to try and battle the physical changes time brings with it. We can’t stop the hands of the ticking clock – however, we can still ease the burden of losing our youthful image. Here is a seven-day plan for kick-starting a routine that you can follow throughout the year. With a little bit of effort, incorporating healthy habits into our daily beauty routine will help us feel and look better.

Follow a simple beauty routine

Soothing stressed skin

Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life. Many times we get confused when trying to buy the best skin products. Over-treating your skin is one of the most common problems dermatologists are presented with. Therefore, narrow your collection to a few selected items: one gentle facial cleanser, an exfoliant to use two to three times a week, and two good moisturisers, one including a sunscreen for the day and another for the night. Simplifying your skin routine In the morning wash your face gently but thoroughly with your hands. Then apply moisturiser to your damp skin and let it soak in before applying make-up. Repeat at night and spend a minute longer washing your face to remove any dirt and make-up you would have applied in the morning. Finally, apply your nighttime moisturiser.

Relaxing needs to become an essential part of your to-do list. Stressed skin will inevitably look tired – to prevent this it’s important to keep your psyche and your skin healthy, calm, and clear. To prevent stress, do your breathing exercises at least twice a day. Preferably do them at the same time each day – this way you will be establishing a breathing routine that keeps you calm while refocusing your energy and changing your body chemistry to support your well-being. So long, stressed skin. Call someone who puts you in a good mood and makes you laugh. Choose someone who can lower your stress level and help put your worries into perspective. Book a massage. If you can manage to go to the spa treatment today, do so. If it’s not immediately possible then make an appointment to have something to look forward to.

Beauty sleep Ask yourself how many hours of sleep do you need. If it’s eight hours, then make sure you get them. If you have to wake up at 6am, call it a day at 9pm to relax and unwind before hitting the sack.

Let the good times roll

Keep your inner system clean by avoiding fast food, fried food and anything that is processed and heavily preserved – this food throw your body and skin off balance. Replace these by a healthy regime of food which include oranges, cantaloupe, tomatoes, leafy greens, salmon and tuna. Of course, this isn’t as easy as it sounds and you need to do battle with your cravings. To curb cravings, make sure you keep healthy food at home and drink plenty of green tea and water flavoured with natural cranberry juice, which is rich in antioxidants.

Day 5 Pump it up Try to do 30 minutes of physical activity today. You can take a class at a gym, go for a power walk with friends or enjoy a bike ride – your body will thank you for this. Choose something you enjoy – there’s no point in feeling miserable while you’re at it.

Spend quality time with people you care about. If you love cooking, invite them over for a scrumptious meal. The essence is to get together with people who are meaningful in your life, who make you laugh or inspire you.

We’re in the fitness army Do you want to fit into that stunning bikini? Then get in line for a bootcamp, says Mariam Awad.

M

alta is very fitness-conscious. For such a small country, the amount of people I see jogging and running is encouraging. But on the other hand, the number of people who don’t exercise or who eat a very poor diet is shocking. I meet a large number of people who tell me that they can’t afford to buy healthy food or that a fit lifestyle doesn’t work for them because they don’t like to wake up early. Others think that keeping fit and healthy is too much hard work. But then, we all have priorities. Some don’t really care about their health and body image, while others want to look and feel young and still be fit in their 50s and 60s. Moreover, it’s a common misconception that staying fit is boring. Rather, there are interesting ways to work out and at the same time meet new people and enjoy getting healthier. Adrian Hunt-Seviour is a personal trainer and boot camp instructor. He has more than 20 years experience in training celebrities and VIPs in the UK, the Middle East and North Africa.

Adrian explains that bootcamp exercises vary in style, depending on the instructor – however, you can generally expect to meet outside, rain or shine. Most bootcamps start with an hour of cardiovascular exercises such as running, hiking, interval training or obstacle course challenges, along with strength training such as using dumbbells, exercise bands or the resistance of your own body weight. You will also work on flexibility in a stretch portion of the class, which may incorporate elements of yoga or Pilates. Bootcamp fitness classes challenge the mind as well as the body, says Adrian. “We work on technique, including core training, breathing, relaxation, and a better understanding of how the body moves. In four weeks, people can drop five to six per cent body fat, lose up to four kilos, and reduce their mile time sometimes by two minutes a mile.” Often, the confidence that participants gain in a bootcamp class helps them take control of other aspects of their life. Though the name “bootcamp” was inspired by military training camps,

most instructors don’t use intimidation tactics in their classes. “If you’re lining people up and yelling at them, that’s not real camaraderie. That’s something you can fake,” says Adrian. Besides, he says, it’s not necessary – people will push themselves on their own when they’re in a group. “It’s in our human nature to challenge ourselves against other humans – not everybody is as athletically inclined, but by hanging out with more driven people, you’re naturally going to want to do better,” he says. “Negative reinforcement generally only goes so far,” he says. “My choice is to have an empowering environment, one that is nurturing and very challenging. Also, the environment should not be just about getting in shape but also about community and nutrition and about being better in everything you do.” It’s still a bootcamp though. “People are expected to show up, shut up, pay attention, and give 100 per cent,” he says. “It’s disciplined in nature and it’s intense. It’s definitely not a catwalk.”

A personality cult? Another powerful draw for fitness bootcamp classes, say some participants, is the charisma of the instructors. A bootcamp class is meant to empower students for the whole day. As a teacher, you transmit to the participants powerful thoughts and statements. You’re setting the example and guiding them. “My goal as an instructor is to give the class a different workout every day and to encourage them to find what it takes to reach their goals,” Adrian says. “I try to be a catalyst. I know what it takes to get there and that there’s more than one way of doing something. We’re talking

about how to make people better,” he says. “Whatever you want out of your life, you’ve got to get it. You’ve got to do it for yourself.” Bootcamp participants range in age from children up to adults in their 60s. Often you will find various levels of bootcamps, from beginners to intermediate and advanced. Also you have specific bootcamps, such as weight loss or mummy bootcamps. To get where you want you have to break a sweat, what you put in is what you get out so don’t expect to be slim and sexy or having nice six-pack without changing your lifestyle and putting in some hard work.

Camaraderie is key So why do bootcamp classes suddenly seem to be showing up everywhere? According to Adrian, it’s about interaction with, and encouragement from, your peers. “Most of what we do all day is very isolating,” he says. “We’ve got tablets, mobile phones and computers. We’re not connecting with other people.” The interaction of a bootcamp class is not only emotionally satisfying, but helps people push themselves physically. “If you’re around other athletic people, they are going to encourage you,” Adrian says.

The trend captured the attention of style critics – for me, metallic colours and fabrics will look fabulous this summer. Futuristic spirit, exhilarating and ever present, glistening on major runways of the world whether you covet it or not, metallics are a major part of this season’s trends. This time around, the trend will take us a step forward into metallic clothing with shiny textures and delicate pastels.

Roccobarocco

There is a stereotype that says metallic clothing is only for evening or cocktail wear – but this is so untrue. Fashion is fun and you must not take it seriously – so if you are like me, wear metallics in the morning and I’m sure you will grab some attention and be seen from a mile away, especially in the sun. Cutting edge metallics are here to stay. For this season, New York-based designer Behnaz Sarafpour and Roccobarocco have shown different glitter hues which definitely should be part of your lust-have list. Brocade metallic is a much safer option for those who want to wear metallics in a more conservative way. Again, Roccobarocco gave us pastel metallics that add a playful, frisky mood to classic metal hues and are perfect for a more expressive style. Pink, aqua, blue and fuchsia are the distinguished colours for SS13. Badgley Mischka and Reed Krakoff gave us exquisite metallic textures, detailed with metallic shine – what can be more amazing?

Mirror shine metallics are my absolute favourite – if, like me, you’re not afraid to be a little flashy, then this is perfect for you. I’m totally embracing iridescent oil slick and ultra shine metallics which are striking through their simplicity and minimal embellishments.

Re-establishing metallic silver’s deep rooted appeal, designers like Donna Karan and Alexander Wang opted for the most common metallic hue to pump some much needed contrast into their signature athletic aesthetics – the resulting garments reached new levels of urban polish. Talking about metallics, who can forget the men? Men can have fun with metallics as well. Burberry’s collection is full of eccentricity and vibrant colours that once again prove that human imagination is beyond limits. Designers such as Lanvin bring the metal flavour into men’s fashion, introducing us to a line of edged metallics and flashy bomber jackets. No matter if the style is minimalistic or bold, metallic colour turned every piece into a dazzling style statement and that’s why metallic trend in fashion is strong. Metallic tones are very strong in make-up too and many professional makeup artists and brands are highlighting metallic eye-shadows and pencils for this season. Say yes to metallics. Bright colours, leather, skin-tight leggings, cute loafers, sporty tops – it doesn’t matter how you wear it, just make sure it’s shiny.

Soft summer shades Delicate tones and weightless weaves made for a lovely laidback look while a mix and match plays with inspirations and silhouettes. The pantsuit jacket makes way for fluid tunics as shorts appear in even more formal outfits. The lace is versatile and dresses with flared lines employ trompe l’oeil effects to unite materials and colours. All is dominated by the juxtaposition of masculine and feminine, with the ethereal shirts and tops combined with pants boasting an impeccable fit. Pastel tones guide the chromatic palette, involving large sunglasses and playful pieces of costume jewellery. Like a perennial bloom, fashion history repeats itself, says Lara Boffa.

ne of the greatest misconceptions in Fashion Land is that we all have to reinvent our wardrobe each and every season just because the designers in the Fashion Acropolis have decided to walk down a different road this time. Well, whereas that is a perfect excuse to justify yet another shopping spree, we also have to admit that it is not entirely true. Fashion, like history, tends to repeat itself. Not only do trends return every 20 years or so, but sometimes the hype surrounding a particular print or sartorial detail withstands the fickleness of the industry and magically lives on for two consecutive seasons. Do you remember the overdose of 3D floral sweaters last year? Bloggers,

Little did I know at the time that only a few months later, everyone who mattered would be returning to these 3D floral details in their collections. Like vertical stripes, whiteouts and statement prints, 3D floral appliqué was among the chosen trends for this summer. To say that Chloé’s overlapping florals were stunning is an understatement. The blogosphere went nuts over the way these floral details were incorporated into Prada’s eye-catching 1960s-inspired sweaters. The same happened with the Dries Van Noten sweaters. I can almost still hear the echoing applause at the end of the show. Oscar de la Renta’s floral appliqué contributions were, as usual, almost too good to be true and

celebrities and even the occasional 60-year-old (who thinks she’s 18) donned one of them. I recall resisting the whole garden-inspired phase like a proper fashion enfant terrible until, in one of those once-in-a-blue-moon sales on one of my favourite online fashion stores, I stumbled across a gorgeous angel wing top in a crisp white colour. I was instantly drawn to its striking shade of innocence as well as to the flower corsage detail on the very high neckline. Half attracted to the much more minimal treatment of the floral appliqué and halffancying myself looking like an angel, I went ahead and put the item in my shopping cart.

Erdem is being hailed as the king of florals this year. Even Chanel took the plunge and applied floral appliqués on some of their dresses for the spring and summer collections. If, on the one hand, you weren’t lucky enough to bag yourself a 3D floral appliqué garment during the last days of the sales like I did, there is no reason to panic. All it takes is a pair of good scissors, some thread and a trip to your local crafts or euro store. This is by far the season’s prettiest trend, so I can’t blame you for wanting to give it a go as well. Let’s face it, it’s also a great way of adding dimension to a trend that keeps coming back every single year.

Florals for spring and summer are hardly groundbreaking are they? Rummage through your wardrobe and find an item that you are either bored of and want to update or something you are brave enough to sacrifice for your DIY endeavours. You will also need some good-sized floral appliqués from the craft store or haberdashery. Alternatively, you can use sensibly sized flowers from an artificial bouquet, recycle previously owned floral hairgrips, or any other sort of flowers you happen to come across. All that is left to do then is to attach them to your item of choice. The great thing about this trend is that it leaves you free to choose the garment, item and positioning you personally prefer. You can opt for a shirt and attach the floral appliqués to the cuffs or collar. You can also place these floral friends sporadically all over the shirt. If you are patient enough, you can even sew on scores of flowers to make your own floral sweater. Bags are also worthy contenders of the garden-inspired details and can be used in multiple ways according to how casual you want your final product to look. Needless to say, you are also pretty much free to decide which colour combinations you fancy the most. Fashion freedom at its best.

Which is your favourite social network and does it influence your style? I find Pinterest very useful to keep up to date with the latest trends in clothing, jewellery, shoes and makeup.

Which is your favourite social network and does it influence your style? I like Facebook and Twitter. I usually look for inspiration for my phone covers and to keep abreast with the latest nail colours.

Which is your favourite social network and does it influence your style? I like Facebook and Foursquare. I don’t use social networks for tips about fashion because I have my personal style but I tend to use Foursquare when I’m in the mood for shopping.

Which is your favourite social network and does it influence your style? I’m currently studying fashion in Milan at the Istituto Marangoni and I regularly follow fashion blogs – they do influence my style.

And the winner is…

It was quite a challenging shoot – I had to walk up the hills at Ghajn Tuffieha wearing a long wedding dress, full make-up and styled hair in the hot summer months. That didn’t stop me from being very excited to work with photographer Jessica C Moritz – I had seen her work and really liked it so I wanted to take some good shots. I was never on a magazine cover and was not used to being in front of the lens either. Everything was new to me but that day, with the help of the photographer, I learned how to pose and figured out my best camera angles.

What did your wardrobe look like when you were young? Like Joseph’s technicolour dreamcoat. I remember having lots of colours, which were perfect for mixing and matching. Sometimes my mum would send me back to my room to change as I used to put on ridiculous outfits. Back then I was hopeless with clothes and fashion – I have a photo of me wearing a bandana and a cute pink dress and I still wonder what I was thinking.

What does it look like now? At the moment my wardrobe is a mess because I’m always buying new clothes from England, where I currently live. When I return to Malta, I plan to re-do my whole wardrobe and organise it. My staple items are jeans, cute tops and dresses. I love all colours and patterns except polka dots. I used to love them back in the day but now I absolutely hate them – it’s just not my thing any more.

What is your current favourite wardrobe item? My River Island denim jacket.

What trends do you think suit you best? In summer, I love the boho look. I feel so comfortable wearing patterned maxi dresses with gladiator sandals and cute denim jackets. Wearing accessories is a must with every outfit, even when wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

What fashion item would you never wear? I would never wear white cowboy boots.

Do you plan your shopping trips or are you a guerrilla shopper? I love planning shopping trips with either my mum or friends. It’s fun to know you have an amount of money and can spend it all on clothes. However when I’m out and about and spot something I like and don’t buy it, I usually go home, spend hours thinking about it, and returning the next day to buy it.

We take a look at MFA Female Model of the Year Gaby Curmi’s wardrobe

What does winning the Female Model Award at the Malta Fashion Awards 2013 mean to you? What an achievement – sometimes, I still have to touch the statuette to check that it’s not a dream. Modelling is something I’m very passionate about. I have tried many things growing up, including football, swimming, dancing and also acting but I never found the one thing I actually love until I won Supernova Model The Competition. From then on my modelling career flourished and being named Best Female Model 2013 at this year’s Malta Fashion Awards is simply amazing and makes all the modelling work I have done worthwhile. It’s such an achievement in my books and for once I can actually say I’m proud of myself.

You also have a background in modelling – how does this help you as a make-up artist?

What inspired you to pursue a career as a make-up artist? I was pretty much lost as a teen with regards to what career path I wanted to take. I must have changed my mind at least a hundred times growing up, but deep down I always knew that whatever I did it had to be artistic in some way. I suppose that my decision to pursue make-up as a career had a lot to do with my love for fashion, which started at a very young age. What does make-up say about a person?

Make-up plays an important role in the first impressions that people have on others. Make-up reveals what you’re trying to hide, what your favourite features are, and whether you’re outgoing or a bit on the timid side. Red lipstick, for instance, is a very powerful statement – not everyone can pull it off, but whoever dares to wear it means business. Do you try out new make-up trends on yourself? All the time. Whenever there is a new trend or a new product I always try it on myself first – I’m a bit of a perfectionist like that. If I don’t like to use a certain product on myself, I definitely won’t use it on someone else.

For starters it helped me choose my career path – while modelling, I used to watch make-up artists at work and was always fascinated at how they can transform a person. Also, my modelling background helps me understand how different lighting can affect your make-up – moreover, it helps me keep up to date with the latest trends. What are the more popular make-up trends this season? This season it’s all about bold lips, cat eyes, glowing skin and striking blue hues. So girls should definitely invest in some bright coloured lipsticks, eye shadows and a great bronzer. However if like most people they’re a bit wary of bright colours on the eye, I suggest pairing up their everyday neutral tones with a pop of colour along the lash line. What is, for you, the difference between fashion and style? Fashion is what designers and retailers dictate what you should be wearing for the coming season – this has to be adapted to your own personal taste in order to create your unique look. Style is more personal – it’s what makes you stand out from a crowd. Like my mum always says, “It’s not what you wear – it’s the way that you wear it.”

Who or what inspired you to take up a camera and start shooting? From an early age I was never sure what I wanted to do in life. I always found photography, design, architecture, structures and science very fascinating but I never managed to choose just one. I think the key factors which led me to what I’m doing now were always curiosity and the need to do something creative. What are your memories of your first camera?

Portrait Name: Sean Mallia Age: 24 Studies: Has a Diploma in Design Foundation Studies and is currently reading for a BSc (Hons.) in Built Environment Studies.

I remember my father playing around with his Yashica SLR on film and I was always intrigued by it and wanted to try and take photos of my own. The first camera I constantly experimented with was a 2MP Olympus digital compact camera. After that I upgraded to a 6MP BenQ digital compact camera. One particular photo which I took with this camera – a photo of an origami boat statue at the Valletta Waterfront – convinced me to change my camera to a Nikon SLR and start taking photography seriously. What is the genre that best showcases your style? I never stick to one genre and I like to experiment as much as I can. I mostly take photos of architecture, interiors, designer furniture, weddings, products and fashion. Most of all, my niche is food photography. Black and white or colour? I believe that every photo has its particular character either in colour or black and white. It depends on the mood you want to set and what subject you are shooting. Personally I love high contrast monochromes but when it comes to food photography colour can be very tricky.

Does a photo ever need a caption? Definitely not. A photo should tell its own story and send out the right mood and expression the artist had in mind. A photo can also be interpreted in many different ways, which is one of the great things about art. Is choosing a location a conscious decision? Sometimes yes – a well-planned and organised photo shoot will give you the result that you originally had in mind. But there are instances when you have to be spontaneous and make the best out of the particular situation you are in. Do you always carry a camera around with you? I use to do that a lot, taking hundreds of shots every week of any interesting detail I came across. But at some point it overtakes your life and you need to learn how to control it and be more selective. What’s the best photograph that you didn’t manage to capture? There is the occasional beautiful sunset during which I wish I had my gear with me instead of just my phone. However, I usually go prepared looking for a good photo rather than find one by surprise. What makes you press the shutter release? For me it’s just an impulse to capture something in a frame which other people cannot perceive. It is a need I have to create something visually pleasing or something expressive that evokes a feeling. This need is constantly active in my life. Everywhere I look, whether it’s at architecture, a facial expression or a nicely presented dish, I try compose it the best way I can and give it the right type of light it needs to look at its best.
