WELCOME The cruel contingency of the world is such that a lifetime’s bubble of plans and projections can be burst in minutes. I met Anthony Masterson way back in the 1980s, when we were both growing up in Malta. Half Maltese and half Australian, Anthony was a fun guy, always looking at the positive side of things. We became lifelong friends. In 1999, he returned to Australia and eventually settled down with his girlfriend. Then in 2008, tragedy struck – while doing some maintenance work on the roof of his house, Anthony fell, landed flat on his back and dislocated a vertebra.

The only hurdle is the huge expense involved. In a candid interview, Anthony tells us about his hopes and dreams. In this issue of FM, we also interview dancer Krista De Gaetano, who is using her artistic talents to help liberate the victims of modern day slavery and sexual exploitation. Last March, following a verbal assault, designer John Galliano was fired from Dior. Almost eight months later, the fashion house still hasn’t found a replacement for Galliano. In this issue, Ron Van Maarschalkerweerd lists the potential successors to the Dior throne. In this issue, we also introduce budget queen Lara Boffa and paint winter’s fashion palette. Read on and enjoy.

INTERVIEW

JOHNNY COME LATELY Winner of the 2010 Peroni Young Designer Award and runner up in this year’s Project Runway Australia, Johnny Schembri is proving to be a fashion force to be reckoned with. Alison Bezzina meets up with Johnny during his short holiday in Malta and delves into his world of fashion, success and designer glamour.

J

ohnny Schembri’s Australian accent might fully disguise his Maltese roots, but luckily the island’s warm lure still manages to pull the young designer away from the glitzy world of fashion runways. “My grandparents from my dad’s side were born and lived in Malta until they were adults,” explains Johnny. “Like many other Maltese, they then moved to Australia after the war in the 1950s. My mum’s mother was also born in Malta, and I still have many cousins here. I love spending time with them under the Malta summer sun and on my next trip I will be organising my Summer 2012 collection photo shoot in Comino. “Every time I visit Malta, I notice new, up-and-coming labels, and I would love to see more Maltese designers make it to the world stage. Eventually, when I start selling to the European market, Malta will surely be at the top of my list.” Just 23 years old, Johnny has his own successful women’s fashion label,

By Johnny, and his latest creations can be found online at www.byjohnny.com. au and in boutiques all over Australia. His latest achievement is that of being chosen to dress Mel B, the former Spice Girl, for the Nickelodeon Kids Choice awards. Johnny’s style is particularly original because it is influenced by his love for textiles and the particular lifestyles of his individual clients. “I start by examining the fabric at hand, and then create something that moves and works on the body in question, thus creating a silhouette,” explains Johnny. Last year, Johnny won the Peroni Young Designer Award which was set up by the renowned fashion designer Antonio Berardi. The award seeks upand-coming designers from across Australia who can successfully represent Peroni’s Italian heritage and brand values – namely, style, attention to detail, high quality, and of course the incorporation

of Peroni’s signature, a blue ribbon. Antonio Berardi is one of the most important designers in fashion today and has worked with famous stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Kyra Sedgwick, Victoria Beckham, as well as Jessica Alba. Having just wrapped up the PR and filming schedule for Project Runway Australia Season 3 – an Australian reality television series hosted by model Megan Gale, which focuses on fashion design – Johnny is now on his way to Milan to meet and work with fashion designer Antonio Berardi in his studio. This was part of the prize for winning the Peroni Young Designer Award last year. Incredibly enough, amidst all this hype and limelight, Johnny has also found the time to design and produce the summer 2011 collection for his label, By Johnny, where careful attention has been paid to the wants and needs of his female market and where his pieces exhibit a great use of colour and texture that encourages the wearer to exude a level of confidence and attitude.

FM / November 2011 - 9

INTERVIEW

Based around three different prints, the collection is inspired by colour and offers sexy and fun pieces that can be mixed and matched to take them from work, to beach, to play and to party. “I feel that over the years I have become slightly more daring in my designs,” says Johnny. “In fact, I’ve taken some of my favourite pieces from the past, such as my signature woven skirt, and made it new by turning it into a digital print.” Johnny had plenty of fun creating his prints – he first asked his four-year-old 10 - FM / November 2011

cousin Lola to paint a picture using her favourite colours, and then used the youthful, feminine print that became the Lola Print kaftan and Lola Print mini skirt. Always with the female body and figure in mind, the design has been printed on an amazing wet suit-like base that holds the female form firm and tight. “Lola was my grandma’s name” explains Johnny, “and my little cousin, who made the painting, was named after her. “Over the years, I’ve seen myself grow as a designer. I can see this growth even

from season to season as I get more in touch with what my customers love and feel good in. I like to keep my style very fresh each season as to keep the girls wanting more.” “In my latest collection, I kept all my shapes and silhouettes very clean and simple, so the prints really take over. All these pieces can go from day to night and were designed for the By Johnny girl to have fun in.” By Johnny’s Summer 2011 collection is also available to purchase online at www.byjohnny.com.au

INTERVIEW

The man behind the label Johnny Schembri studied fashion design at St George TAFE. During this time, Johnny competed in numerous fashion design competitions, catching the eye of fashion industry insiders and influencers alike. 2008 saw Johnny crowned the official designer for the illustrious 2008 Golden Slipper Carnival – his duties as the official fashion designer included dressing all 2008 ambassadors, jewellery designer Samantha Wills, model Ali Mutch and sports star Lauren Eagle for all racing events and photo shoots. After working in public relations and designing for one of Sydney’s high street labels, Johnny took the plunge and decided to launch his label, By Johnny, at the young designer section of Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival in 2009. The first capsule collection of five pieces was a hit, which proved that Johnny was going to make his mark on designer clothing in Australia. During the summer of 2009, Johnny continued to sell his collection at the Paddington Fringe Bar markets in Sydney. This set the scene for the launch of the By Johnny online store, enabling him to sell his designer fashion online to girls all over Australia. In May 2010, the By Johnny label was officially launched at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. Johnny showcased his Summer 2010 collection in the New Generation section of RAFW, demonstrating to the Australian fashion industry who Johnny Schembri was and what he was all about. In November 2010, Johnny won the Peroni Harpers Bazaar Young Designer of the Year Award. The judging panel consisted of international fashion designer Antonio Berardi along with chief editor of Harpers Bazaar, Edwina McCann. The prize included a return trip to Milan to spend time with Berardi in his design studio. 2011 brought Johnny his next biggest accomplishment, becoming one of the top three finalists on Season 3 of Project Runway Australia.

Celebrating fashion Friday, October 14, marked the opening of the Artigli Gozo flagship store at The Plaza Shopping Centre, Sliema. A couple of hundred guests waited eagerly for the doors to open, and were later overjoyed to explore the vast Autumn/Winter collections presented all around the 150 sqm store. Throughout the party, excited shoppers enjoyed the new collections, while enjoying flowing Cisk Chill together with Doritos snacks and Limuncell from Gozo. The event culmination included a fashion show featuring the brand’s latest trends, with make up officially done by the Inglot team. Upon exit, guests were all given a brand goody bag, filled with a catalogue, official pen and keychain of the same company brand. With no connection with any other store in Malta, Artigli at the Plaza is surely worth a visit. Photography by Tonio Schembri.

INTERVIEW

DANCING FOR FREEDOM Dancer Krista Degaetano wants to use the freedom of dance to liberate victims of modern day slavery, says Daniela Brockdorff.

A

tiny, fragile girl barely seven years of age, kept in a dark room for weeks on end, waits for male customers to pay her a visit.

Krista went on to study at the esteemed London dance school LABAN and found herself in Dubai wanting to dedicate her extraordinary skills to a good cause.

Unfortunately, this is not the beginning of an imaginary tale but the reality experienced by many young children around the world. This is the reality of modern day slavery and human trafficking.

For Krista, Dubai was an unused stage waiting for the patter of dancing feet. Krista soon started running her own contemporary dance classes, choreographing and performing at the same time.

To use Yeats’ words, I always stand fascinated in front of ‘body swayed to music’, somehow unable to separate ‘the dancer from the dance’. I am in awe of acts which seem to radiate an unbound freedom. Sadly, such a freedom is, even nowadays, an insubstantial and unlived dream for the many innocent victims of modern day slavery.

One day, while performing at the Dubai International Dance Festival, Krista was approached by Dan Bowler from BPW Global Search. Dan asked Krista whether she would like to be part of a charity dance project called Urban Freedom, a project aimed at raising funds in order to be able to build shelters for victimised children in the United Arab Emirates. Krista agreed.

Krista Degaetano, 28, was born to dance. Now, she is dancing for freedom as part of BPW’s Urban Freedom project. “Dance is freedom in many ways,” she tells me. “It is only natural to link such a liberating artistic gesture with the actual liberation of young victims worldwide.” At only 11 months of age, Krista was entertaining her parents’ friends, dancing on the family table. Eventually,

Researching for the project brought Krista face to face with the atrocities the vulnerable victims were going through. Reading about it on the web is one thing, but meeting them in person at the rescuing shelters is a completely different matter. Girls as young as five are being trafficked into the sex trade, sometimes by their own parents; others believe that they are travelling to a better future elsewhere and end up as sex slaves in foreign and hostile countries.

Their stories were heartbreaking for Krista. Yet the children filled her with an unconquerable strength, endowing her with plenty of energy. She decided that she had to do her utmost to help these young girls. “We are currently in the initial stages of the project,” Krista says, busy with auditions for the project.

INTERVIEW Eventually dancers, professionals and choreographers will be working together in workshops, each creating distinct feelings, dynamics and concepts of human trafficking through contemporary dance. The main event will then be held in Dubai in May of next year. The event will be set up either in front of the tallest tower in the world, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, or in the Abu Dhabi palace as a tribute for Her Highness SH Fatima Bint Mubarak. An hour-long contemporary dance performance will showcase the choreography of Kerry Nicholls, Shobana Jeyasingh, Ron Howell, as well as that of Krista Degaetano. At the same time, artists from all over the world will be exhibiting their works of art and selling them at auction. A grand dinner will then act as a celebratory conclusion for the event. All funds gathered from tickets sales, auction and dinner will go towards one of the major human trafficking charities in Abu Dhabi. The money will be used to build a larger and more welcoming shelter for the victims, allowing them

20 - FM / November 2011

to live there and rehabilitate for longer. Moreover, part of the funds will be used to help victims rebuild a new life, away from the horrors they were exposed to. Ultimately, the aim is to establish Urban Freedom as a registered charity with various sponsors providing further education, long-term housing as well as jobs for the victims, enabling them to live as normal a life as possible. The aim is for the charity to become a worldwide effort to organise performances across the globe while disseminating awareness about child trafficking to the four corners of the world. The talent and passion for dancing of so many individuals worldwide would thus be brought together in one worldwide dance for freedom. I ask Krista whether she would ever consider coming back to Malta. “I would love to bring the project or at least a part of it to Malta,” she says. “I have been away training, dancing, and working with incredible artists for over eight years now and I feel that it

Dance is freedom in many ways. is time to share this work with our precious Maltese people. Our nation is renowned for having a heart of gold, and I am positive that this production will bring about a positive vibe in Malta that will contribute to the greater good. “Movement of the body in any form frees the mind, soul and spirit – it transports the dancer to a level of bliss at various levels. Once you feel the rhythm, the body is imbued with a sensation of utter enjoyment which to me is freedom. Combining contemporary dance with a cause which fights against modern day slavery and the abuse of innocent, helpless, young children is for me the perfect combination of forces.

John Galliano

Life after John

Ron Van Maarschalkerweerd asks the million dollar question – who will succeed John Galliano at the House of Dior?

W

hen the news about John Galliano’s verbal assault on a couple in a Parisian café started to spread, the fashion world initially stayed quiet. And although Galliano was immediately suspended from his job at the House of Dior, most of the industry followed Dior’s example and waited for the police to investigate. But when a few days later a video was released showing the designer slurring his way though a racist rant, things changed and several people began to choose sides. Then in March, 2011 John Galliano was fired from Dior.

go crazy. It’s a human case; it’s not political or religious. He didn’t kill anyone!” But not everyone has been so compassionate towards John Galliano, and rightfully so. Despite his enormous success, those around him had long been awaiting and predicting Galliano’s meltdown. Alcohol and drug habits were seemingly fuelled by enormous pressure from the industry that made him. Galliano personally oversaw 12 new collections a year, so the demands on him were immense.

In his comments, Sidney Toledano, Dior’s president and CE said, “I condemn most firmly the statements made by John Galliano which are a total contradiction with the essential values that have always been defended by the House of Christian Dior.”

Since his outburst, the rumour is that he has checked into The Meadows rehabilitation facility in Arizona, where he found help to conquer his addictions. When and if we will ever see him back on the fashion scene is still a big question mark.

The video was met with widespread disgust from people both inside and outside the fashion industry – however, certain people remained on Galliano’s side. Vogue Italia editor in chief Franca Sozzani blogged that she thinks the video was a set up and recently insisted that Dior should hire back Galliano and forget about all the possible candidates for the job.

Before we check out who are the potential candidates suitable to follow in Galliano’s footsteps at Dior, it is interesting to mention that Galliano was also fired from his namesake label.

“Hire back John Galliano,” she told the Daily Beast. “Look, I understand their point of view. I understand they couldn’t just say, ‘Bad boy! We forgive you! Come back!’ But it’s really a pity. And I will never believe he believed what he said. I think he was drunk and alone in a bar. When people go crazy, they

The board of directors at Christian Dior SA, which owns 91 per cent of the Galliano house, decided that the label would go on but without John Galliano himself. I find his sacking from his own label more shocking than the fact that he was fired from Dior – at Dior he was hired to do a job but Galliano was his creation. This is a typical FM / November 2011 - 25

FASHION In the meantime the House of Dior has been presenting its collections and designer Bill Gaytten, who for long had been Galliano’s right hand man, has had a though time convincing the critics. After a misjudged couture collection, Gaytten and his team played it safe for the Christian Dior SS/12 prêt-a-porter collection. They looked back to the Dior legacy and reminded everyone that many of the looks so popular on many of the international catwalks are inspired by Dior’s past. At the time of going to print, there was still no news of a successor to John Galliano, but the show must go on and Bill Gaytten and his team seem to be getting into the swing of things at Dior. Give them a little time and maybe there will be no need for a successor. It will surely save the house of Dior a couple of millions.

Marc Jacobs - Galliano’s potential successor at Dior

example of the ruthlessness that spikes the fashion industry – most designers have to sell their names to have a chance of ever making it in the industry. Then when problems arise, this can have disastrous results for the designers in question and many times they lose the right to work under their own names. But let’s go back to our guessing game and the $1m dollar question. Or rather, it’s a $10m question as that is the amount rumoured to have been discussed with designer Marc Jacobs, who is the number one favourite in the press and apparently on top of Dior’s wish list. Although Marc Jacobs would probably do an excellent job at Dior, I find it hard to believe that LVMH would let him leave his current post at Louis Vuitton – after all, for the past 12 years he has fuelled the label’s enormous success. Belgian based designer Haider Ackermann has also been tipped for the job but I believe he is too edgy for Dior, although it would be interesting to see his vision for the house. It has also been reported that designer Ricardo Tisci has been approached by Dior but apparently has turned down the job, saying he is way too comfortable at his current job at the House of Givenchy. All these rumours have so far only been speculations and the big bosses at Dior have been extremely silent about the whole thing.

BUDGET QUEEN

METAL DETECTOR

THE BUDGET QUEEN Lara Boffa is allergic to oranges. She’s also an interpreter, has always wanted a pet dog, can play the piano and is lost in six languages. She runs her own fashion blog at http://boffism.blogspot.com/

This season, all that glitters is fashion gold, says Lara Boffa.

H

aving gone shopping every other day since I was 15 years old, I can say that I’ve spent a great deal of my life giving shelter to the poor clothes on the cold, cold racks. Naturally, you might wonder how I can afford it. The reason I can is that I actually shop on a budget and try to make the most of the money I spend on clothing and accessories. I am, in fact, what the fashion world calls a ‘recessionista’, namely a person who tries to dress fashionably without breaking the bank. There are a million and one reasons why many fashion lovers hop on the recessionista train. Some hate spending a great deal of money on clothes because they just don’t see the point of doing so. Others have a gazillion other expenses to attend to, so their clothing budget is very tight. Some, like yours truly, must have their wardrobes full of clothes to satisfy their each and every – sometimes whimsical – need.

Irrespective of the myriad of motives, all recessionistas understand that you don’t need to spend too much to create your own style. Let’s take, for instance, the metallic trend, which is as popular as colour blocking was last year. It doesn’t take a genius to notice all the gold and silver pieces in the shops right now. Moreover, to make matters even shinier, this trend is set to remain popular next spring and summer. If you’re keen on this trend, but you don’t want to spend all of your earnings on one single item, then accessories and simple shoes are the way to go. First of all, accessories are generally sold at a lower price than a blazer or a pair of jeans. And secondly, shoes and accessories are investment buys that you can match with different outfits. Simply put, the best and most inexpensive way to rock the metallic trend is to focus on the little details, like accessories and shoes. In times of economic downturn and austerity measures, recessionism is the way to go. When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping, on a budget.

I also find that recessionism is very romantic: wanting to look good and struggling to make ends meet would make Lord Byron incredibly proud.

under €5 each – their price is even more worth it considering the endless amount of outfits I can pair these scarves with, while managing to make them look different every time. That’s surely one bargain buy. Actually, two, but you get my point.

Some weeks ago, I bought a silver and a gold scarf which are my new best friends. I could have got away with buying only one, but I like to get the best of both worlds. Both scarves were

Many shops are currently doing metallic flats which are sold for pretty reasonable prices. I had totally forgotten I had a pair of silver flats, and when I found them again a few days ago, I started squealing with excitement. Literally. These plain metallic flats are such a good alternative to standard black flats, so whenever I feel like having shining feet, I swap my black flats for these plain silver ones. Given that they retail for good prices, they’re worth the money, even because you can still wear them when the trend has faded. If you’re really short on cash this month, but that little voice inside you keeps urging you to give metallics a try, then this alternative will work best for you. In essence, you could rock this trend simply by stepping up your jewellery, without spending a single penny. Get your jewellery box and start to pile things on. The more, the merrier. If you usually wear one ring, then it’s time to add a couple more. If you’re banking on your jewellery to do the trick, then you have to make sure there’s plenty of it. FM / November 2011 - 31

What do you get when you mix Lady Gaga, Karl Lagerfeld and coloured jeans? Kira Drury all excited, that’s what you get.

If you have any style dilemmas, contact Kira on our Femme magazine page.

Fashion trend: coloured denim This summer’s hottest trend, colour blocking, is still a big look for winter. Brightly coloured denim is everywhere and on everyone. It’s a cool way to introduce bright colours into your winter wardrobe. Team with a plain tee, blazer and flats during the day or go for heels, a blouse and some bling at night.

Going Gaga Lady G is not one to shy away from an outrageous outfit or two – remember that meat ensemble? So I was pretty surprised that she took style inspiration from the queen of understated chic, Audrey Hepburn. Still, she added a touch of gaga to her LDB with bugeyed shades – can’t quite imagine Audrey rocking them.

Karl Lagerfeld’s new affordable line I’ve got some great news for all you Lagerfeld lovers – Mr L is set to launch a new affordable womenswear fashion label called ‘Karl’ for January 2012, with prices ranging from £52 to £390. Lagerfeld, creative director at Fendi and Chanel, told trade fashion bible Women’s Wear Daily that, “I just want not too expensive clothes that people may like and perhaps want to wear.” Perhaps, you say? For sure, this is one of the most influential men in fashion and I’m dying to see what he’s come up with. The collection will be available exclusively at Net-aporter.com, although there are plans for stand-alone stores.

TRENDS

IN FULL BLOOM It may be cold, but this winter is still in colourful bloom, says FM.

If you thought winter was all dull, black and grey fashion, then think again because the current season is one of the most colourful yet. Colour blocking is one of the hottest trends this winter. And it’s so versatile because you can either take two or three colours that are related and wear them together, or opt for colours that are total opposites on the colour wheel. The effect will be totally different, but still great. The most important thing is that whatever colours you choose, they have the same intensity – so if you’re going with bright yellow, match with an equally loud red. Another thing – don’t add prints to the equation or else your outfit will appear all dazed and confused. Rather, let colours tell your story.

Gucci

Burgundy

Accessorize €27.90

Burgundy is a slightly conservative choice – if you’re not too keen or uncertain on either orange, lemon or bright red, then burgundy is your colour. That said, burgundy is also an elegant colour, luxurious, glamorous and rich. And the good thing is that it looks good on almost anyone.

Goodies for a good cause The Bata Goodies for a Good Cause monthly competition in aid of L-Istrina millQalb 2011 has received an amazing response from the public. “Through such an initiative, Bata has managed to entice many Maltese to help a good cause in this simple way,” Lara Camilleri from Naxxar, the October winner, said. This initiative is offering a monthly prize of €400 worth of Bata fashion goodies, from leather shoes, bags and jackets to belts and scarves. To participate in the November competition, simply send an SMS to 50616120. Each SMS costs €1.16 and all proceeds will be donated to L-Istrina Mill-Qalb 2011. FM / November 2011 - 41

Pink Remember Aerosmith singing, “Pink is my favourite colour”? Well, this season it really is. Yellow Every colour has its own personality and qualities. Green, for instance, is perfect for resting your eyes and giving your mood some quiet time. Red will give you the kind of boost that will help you conquer the world, or at least your circle. Yellow, on the other hand, is one of those happy colours that are so mood improving. This season, yellow comes in all shades, from soft hues to all bright and shiny. You can contrast yellow with most colours – pairing with white or black gives you an instant chic makeover, while if you match with another bright colour such as cobalt, red or purple, you’re oh so naughty.

Shiny If you want to avoid the usual black outfit for a special occasion, then go all shiny – after all, a special occasion demands a special outfit, and shiny block colours are this season’s favourite party element.

This season, winter white makes such a soft, elegant statement, especially when combined with soft creams or nudes. At the other end of the colour spectrum, black is as sexy, chic and festive as ever. Black lace, especially, is very in this winter, in particular when used as fine details in unexpected places like the side back or cleavage. And if you want the best of both worlds, go all black and white – it’s the ultimate minimalist, chic statement.

The barefoot experience If the roads had to be cushioned, you would give up your shoes and go barefoot. Skechers are giving you this option with Shape-ups LIV by Skechers. They are comfortable, flexible and soft. The Resalyte™ material gives you a cushioned base that protects your joints, while the diagonal SmartShoe™ bottom adjusts your stride so the motion of each step naturally aligns your body’s centre of gravity and promotes fluid transitions as you walk, jog or run. The key to Shape-ups LIV by Skechers is the curved bottom which guides you back to your body’s barefoot stride. 44 - FM / November 2011

INTERVIEW

LIVING IN HOPE

Following an accident three years ago, Anthony Masterson has been paralysed from his waist down. Now, thanks to stem cell treatment, he has a glimmer of hope. There is just one obstacle – money.

T

he beauty of life is its unpredictability. Yet it is this same unpredictability that can turn hope into tragedy. In 2008, Anthony Masterson, who is half Maltese and half Australian, was renting a property in Arcadia, New South Wales, with his then girlfriend Rebecca. Spread on three acres, the property was perfect for Rebecca’s horses – in fact, Anthony even got permission to convert the shed into stables for Rebecca’s dressage horses. The whole property was on tank water, which meant that the gutters had to be kept clean. On August 23, 2008, at 11:30am,

Anthony was cleaning the gutters of his shed. Just the week before, he had done the same thing at the main house. But in the meantime, conditions had changed, so Anthony took on the task with great caution.

Apart from two broken ribs and a concussion, Anthony had dislocated vertebrae T12, which meant that his spinal cord was squashed between T11 and T12 – this left him instantly paralysed from the waist down.

However, once he had his whole weight on one of the support beams, it snapped and Anthony fell backwards, dropping three metres and landing flat on his back.

“I was flown to the Royal North Short Hospital for surgery,” says Anthony. “My vertebrae were fused with titanium rods, one on each side of my spinal column from the T10 vertebra down to the L1 vertebra.”

Since that day, Anthony hasn’t been able to walk again. “I remember falling through the roof and hitting the floor,” says Anthony as he recalls the accident. “I knew straight away that my injury was very serious as I couldn’t feel my legs.”

Anthony spent the following two months in hospital. “After that, I spend another two and a half months in rehabilitation, where I was taught how to transfer from my wheelchair to the toilet, bed and car.”

FM / November 2011 - 59

INTERVIEW After the accident, Anthony’s life underwent a dramatic change. “I cannot do most of the things I used to love, like playing football with my friends, dancing, horse riding, body surfing and playing with my daughter. “My sexual function has also diminished and I can no longer ejaculate or orgasm – this is quite hard to deal with.” Anthony also had to change career. “When I had the accident, I had just started a new job as franchise acquisitions sales consultant for a company called VIP Home Services. After my accident, I had to pursue a different career based in an office – my income potential dropped because of my injuries and lack of mobility.” However, Anthony is totally independent and can drive his own modified car, which he says is “great”. There is also new hope for Anthony, in the form of stem cell treatment. “Stem cell treatment offers me a chance to regain some motor and sensory functions which can then be worked on in physiotherapy. “I believe that in the next five to 10 years, there will be further developments in stem cell treatment, which give me and other patients hope.” However, stem cell treatment is not offered in Australia, which means that Anthony has to travel abroad. The cost of his first treatment, including travel expenses, adds up to €30,000, which Anthony cannot afford.

I cannot do most of the things I used to love, like playing football with my friends, dancing, horse riding, body surfing and playing with my daughter.

“In Australia, government spends most of the health budget on heart disease and cancer. In the field of stem cells, we are still doing tests on rats, which means that we are about five years behind the rest of the world. I think it’s a shame that government don’t offer much funds to the progress of this cause and research.” Anthony isn’t going to let his lack of funds dampen his hopes and is busy organising fundraising events. “I have received some donations, but I still have to raise thousands more,” he says. “But I live in hope.”

HEALTH

HEALTHY BODY, HEALTHY MIND The girls from the hit TV show Ilsien in-Nisa get in shape at the LivingWell Health Club, Hilton Malta.

Moira Delia

Clare Agius

“I love working out,” says Moira Delia. “The advanced aerobic classes at the LivingWell Health Club do miracles for me – after a hard day’s work, it’s great to release all the accumulated tension and stress.”

“Having a healthy lifestyle means I have more energy to work more efficiently. I can also live a happier life,” says Clare Agius. “My time spent at LivingWell plays an important part in my lifestyle.”

Moira also does weights and uses the air-walker, which keeps her body toned.

Otherwise, Clare doesn’t follow any particular diet regime.

“The trainers at the LivingWell also help me out a lot – it’s important to have professional people to guide you in your training.” Moira doesn’t follow any particular diet. “I just love food too much,” she says. “However, I train hard so that I can freely eat what I feel like. It’s all part of leading a healthy lifestyle, which reflects well on my character, moods and energy levels.”

“Sometimes, when I need to detox, I cut down on carbohydrates and sugars. However, I generally eat a balanced diet rich in fruit, vegetables, nuts and grains, washed down with plenty of water daily.” Clare also teaches Yoga at LivingWell and plans to start doing Aqua Aerobics and Pilates in the new winter schedule. “I use the pool sauna and steam room to help me round off my exercise,” adds Clare, who enjoys the LivingWell facilities both on her own and as a girls’ day out.

Pauline Agius

Claire Agius Ordway

For Pauline Agius, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important. “Thanks to my parents, I’ve always had a healthy lifestyle which I intend to maintain since it’s extremely beneficial for mind and body,” she says. “I’m also very aware of my diet – by diet, I don’t necessarily mean weight loss but making wise choices about what I eat and drink.

“If I don’t exercise, I get irritable,” says Claire Agius Ordway.

“I’ve been a member at LivingWell for quite a while. At LivingWell, I do a variety of exercises, from treadmill to attending a class, where time just flies by while you’re burning calories. The choice depends on my mood. On certain days, I’m all for relaxing while doing Yoga or Pilates, while on other days, I’m full of energy and go for cardio classes like Pump, Bosu, Circuit or Aqua Aerobics. “I mostly go to LivingWell with my husband, since we’re a source of encouragement for each other. However, when at the Health Club, I always meet loads of people I know so I’m always in good company.”

Claire trains at the LivingWell Health Club, where she mostly trains on the treadmill to improve her speed and endurance. “The LivingWell trainers are also very helpful with their advice on which exercises to follow,” she says. “I like to do some weights after a good run,” she says. “I also use the pool. Lately, I’ve taken part in an aquathlon and that got me more into swimming. The lovely ambiance at the LivingWell pool also helps me enjoy swimming.” Claire is also trying to cut down on sugars and eat more healthy food. “At the moment, my lifestyle is so hectic that I need the kind of food that keeps me light but full of energy.” For Claire, the gym is strictly me-time. “I love spending an hour at the LivingWell, doing something which I love. While on the treadmill, I get a lot of ideas, so apart from exercising, I also enjoy a creative boost.”

SHOPPING

What I bought this month Model Victoria Pisani may have arrived late to fashion, but she’s surely catching up.

V

ictoria Pisani, 20, is relatively new to modelling.

“I started modelling about a year ago, when I was picked out by a modelling scout at University, where I am reading for a degree in computer engineering,” says Victoria. “I was hesitant at first, but I soon changed my mind and contacted the photographer involved for a shoot. This was a great experience and it helped me gain some exposure.” Victoria admits that she wasn’t even interested in fashion.

Victoria’s November wardrobe I just bought a pair of royal blue trousers, an amber, off-the-shoulder top and a chic cream round neck blouse. This season’s tomboy look is very interesting. I’m also in love with the colourful, patterned cardigans.

“When I was younger, my wardrobe had a tinge of boring, a taste of messy and a truckload of nerdy. “Even in my early teens, I was far from fashionable – I was even appalled by the idea of wearing a miniskirt. “My interest in fashion started when I discovered that fashion is not about being

materialistic, but about being free and unafraid to express those little things you can’t quite express in words.” This realisation brought with it a new wardrobe and plenty of shopping. Still, Victoria is a careful shopper. “Unless I’m going on a shopping trip abroad or need a particular item urgently, I usually wait for when I need to get away from the stress of studying or when I’m simply in a mood to buy something new – then I go shopping.” “I am also careful to stick to my budget. Being fashionable and being sensible don’t have to be mutually exclusive.” But when shopping abroad, Victoria lets go. “Last summer, I went to London with a shopaholic friend of mine – we did have a couple of crazy moments in Oxford Street, and we had a great time visiting vintage shops and trying on the coolest and most flamboyant shoes we could find.” FM / November 2011 - 67

THE LIST

The age of beauty Time is on their side. Or is it? FM looks at the stars who are ageing gracefully, and those who aren’t.

AGEING GRACEFULLY

Jane Fonda All those work-out videos must have done her some good because, at 74, Fonda looks absolutely glowing and fit. Never one to stand still, the Oscar-winning actress has recently launched a new line of work-outs and a book, entitled Prime Time, about ageing well.

Michelle Pfeiffer

Julianne Moore

Andie MacDowell

Remember her in Scarface and Dangerous Liaisons? When Michelle Pfeiffer hit the silver screen, she was a beautiful, almost ethereal presence. Almost three decades later, the 53-year-old actress still looks stunning. And that skin has taken so well to ageing naturally.

Model turned actress Julianne Moore is every man’s redhead dream. Almost 15 years have passed since she made her breakthrough performance in Boogie Nights, yet 51-yearold Moore still looks like a dream.

Born in 1958, Andie MacDowell made her career starring in hits such as Four Weddings and a Funeral. Her beauty earned her Vogue covers and the role of spokesmodel for L’Oreal. Her daughters Rainey and Sarah Margaret have inherited their mother’s looks – lucky.

Helen Mirren Last year, Dame Helen Mirren was photographed in her bikini while holidaying on a beach in Puglia – the 66-year-old English actress looked stunning, with a flat stomach and the kind of curves that would look great on a woman half her age.

AGEING DISGRACEFULLY

Donatella Versace

Pamela Anderson

La Toya Jackson

Melanie Griffith

Whitney Houston

She might wear Versace (unsurprisingly so, given that she owns 20 per cent of the entire stock market assets of Versace), but she still doesn’t look all that good. The platinum crop and the orangey permatan don’t help either.

It’s pretty ironic how one of the hottest sex symbols of all time, and the girl who made a red bathing suit iconic, isn’t ageing gracefully. All that dabbling with plastic surgery has left Pamela Anderson, 43, looking a bit deflated.

Extreme plastic surgery runs in the family. And yet it’s not as if La Toya needed it because, when she posed for Playboy in 1989, she looked gorgeous. That cover turned Jackson into a sex symbol overnight – fast forward to today, and you wouldn’t call her that.

On paper, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith should be one of the most beautiful power-couples in Hollywood. But while Banderas, 51, is still one of the hottest actors around, Griffith, 54, has (allegedly) toyed around with her face that little bit too much.

It’s not surprising that Whitney Houston has one of the most beautiful and powerful voices in the history of pop – her mother is Cissy Houston and Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick are her cousins. And she looked great. But some tough patches have left their mark.

LAST WORD

BUILDING PHOTOS Photographer Alex Attard explores the psychology of architecture.

I come from a family of photographers, so growing up, I was surrounded by cameras. My first real memory of photography was when I was about six years old, standing on a stool next to my grandfather in his darkroom with the dim red light on and watching in awe as that first print developed before my eyes. What a magical moment that was. My first camera was a small Fuji instamatic which I got as a present when I was 11 years old. Then when I was 21, I bought my first SLR – a Minolta SRT 101B with a 50mm f1.4 lens. The Ciancio family from my mother’s side has been in photography since 1913 and it was my grandfather, the late John Ciancio, who initiated me into photography. However I did not pursue a career in photography at the time due to other life commitments. Fast forward to 2006 and I felt the urge to pick up the camera again and embrace the new digital era. I studied the art of digital photography for two years and since then have tried to emulate the visual qualities of film through this new medium. I always have a small pocket camera in my car to record anything interesting I may want to revisit. 74 - FM / November 2011

I prefer fine art monochrome photography. However I enjoy working on a colour series if the subject demands it. It is not easy to produce a spontaneous portrait which is both artistically and technically good. However, when you manage to do that, the photo has a certain of-the-moment quality about it which cannot be rivalled. Architecture is my other love. When I look at architecture I somehow transport myself and try to look at it through the architect’s mind when it was still lines on a piece of blank paper. I look at the building and its surroundings, the general environment and the use being made of it. Every building has a psychology to it. It starts to feel like a piece of sculpture with different layers of interpretation. The difficulty is to interpret what you see onto a two-dimensional photograph. Photographers Andre Kertesz, Bruce Davidson, Peter Gasser, and Candida Hofer are my firm favourites. The greatest photo that I didn’t manage to take was of my son being born.
