In centro storico a Venezia, all’estremità orientale di una diagonale tracciata dagli Scalzi verso l’Arsenale e i Giardini della Biennale, nel Sestiere di Castello, in uno dei primi nuclei abitati già nel V-VI secolo d.C., i padri francescani nel 1253, per donazione testamentale del patrizio Marco Ziani, figlio del doge Pietro, divennero proprietari della vigna, della chiesa e delle case circostanti, proprio nel punto di approdo di San Marco nel suo leggendario trasferimento verso Aquileia, salutato dall’Angelo con le parole ‘Pax tibi, Marce, evangelista meus‘. Nell’antico complesso, prima dedicato a San Marco, più tardi al fondatore dell’Ordine San Francesco, si trova il vigneto urbano più antico di Venezia. Ben documentata nelle sue forme gotiche nella xilografia di Jacopo de’ Barbari del 1500, la chiesa venne demolita per volontà del doge Andrea Gritti nella primametà del ’500 e ricostruita da Jacopo Sansovino in base alle misure imposte da un illustre francescano dello stesso convento, padre Francesco Giorgio Zorzi, trascritte nel suo monumentale trattato in latino di argomento etico-filosofico-teologico, De Harmonia Mundi (titolo completo nel frontespizio...

In the Castello district of Venice, at the eastern end of a diagonal traced from the Scalzi towards the Arsenale and the Biennale Gardens, and in one of the first settlements dating back to 5th - 6th century AD, the Franciscan fathers were gifted the vineyard, church and surrounding houses, right on the spot where legend says Saint Mark was greeted as he came from Aquileia: “Pax tibi, Marce, evangelista meus”, said the angel. The land was donated by the patrician Marco Ziani, son of the doge Pietro, in 1253. Here in this ancient complex, first dedicated to Saint Mark, then to Saint Francis, there is the oldest urban vineyard in Venice. The church, whose Gothic structure is familiar to scholars thanks to Jacopo de’ Barbari’s woodcut from the 1500s, was demolished in the first half of the century by order of Doge Andrea Gritti and rebuilt by Jacopo Sansovino using ideas from an illustrious Franciscan from the same friary, Father Francesco Giorgio Zorzi.
