USNR is proud to partner with Angelina Forest Products supplying two new UniFlow dry kilns at their sawmill in Lufkin, Texas. USNR’s patented new UniFlow kiln uses the same automated approach as Counter-Flow kilns, but lumber tracks move in the same direction instead of opposite directions, achieving further increases in throughput and improved lumber quality.
The UniFlow kiln acts as a combination pre-dryer, kiln, and equalizer that dramatically smooths and reduces the energy required to dry lumber, allowing its moisture content to equalize and achieve a low standard deviation comparable to the Counter-Flow kiln. The uni-directional process requires fewer hydraulic units and provides an ergonomic mill flow.

EDITOR’S COMMENT Forest protection still the highest priority
A
s a technical magazine, we spend most of our time look at the most effective ways to make money from forests as natural resources, principally through the application of the latest technology and equipment solutions. The focus is on raising revenues and saving on costs through minimising downtime, increasing the ease of maintenance, improving productivity and sharpening efficiencies. These must all be done with increased comfort for the operator to ensure high levels of staff retention. When we look up from the stand every now and then, it’s often to see the place of forest resources in the context of the climate challenge, or the ‘rebuild green’ stimulus packages being rolled out globally. Such talk has become habit for us, and most likely for our readers. But it often overlooks the overall and fundamental value of global forests. I was reminded of this last month when I was browsing my forestry newsfeed and came face-to-face with a World Economic Forum educational piece reminding people why forests are worth protecting. What was striking was the diversity of reasoning. Yes, there was a strong environmental and conservation angle but the value of forestry products – both those familiar to our readers and others slightly more tangential – to economies and health really hit home. Given everyone loves a list (and I’m hard up against deadline), I’d like to share the WEC top-eight reasons for maintaining our forestry reserves. 1. “Healthy forests mean healthy people” The WEC reckons forests provide fresh air, clean water and nutritious foods, plus a place to stretch our legs. On top of this, forests provide medicines (25% of all medicinal drugs in the developed world are plant-based and this rises to as much as 80% in developing countries). 2. “Forest food provides healthy diets” Indigenous communities eat 100 types of wild food, many from forests, while forest-based food systems are linked to dietary diversity. On the flip-side, nearly a third of emerging infectious diseases are linked to land-use change.
3. “ Restoring forests will improve our environment” Deforestation means more greenhouse gases and threatens species. At least 8% of plants and 5% of animals in forests are at “extremely high risk of extinction”. More forests put more shoulder into the climate-change battle and encourage biodiversity. 4. “ Sustainable forestry can create millions of green jobs” This one is close to our hearts. Forests support more than 86 million green jobs and plus millions of other livelihoods. Sustainablymanaged forests support a range of industries, including paper and construction. 5. “ Degraded lands can be restored at huge scale” The Great Green Wall project sought to “create a 8,000 km green belt across Africa’s drylands and restore 100 million ha of degraded land”, while creating 10 million jobs and improving food security. It would be the largest living structure on the planet. 6. “Every tree counts” Urban forests in megacities have a value of some $500 million based on clean air delivery, food production and energy reduction. 7. “ Empower people to sustainably use forests” Communities need to “manage and govern the land on which they depend” for a healthy environment. This has the added opportunity to rebuild forest landscapes that are equitable and productive. 8. “ We can recover from our planetary, health and economic crises” Ecosystem restoration has huge benefits for all. The UN is set to target a halt, then reversal, of ecosystems degradation by planting and restoring forests on a “massive scale”. Something to thing about when you’re next in the forest. Enjoy Chris Cann

John Deere unveils it’s powerful, purpose-built 768L-II Bogie Skidder
John Deere introduces the new six-wheel 768L-II Bogie Skidder, a true woodland warrior designed to conquer wet conditions and steep slope terrain. Incorporating the proven, durable features found on the John Deere L-II Skidder lineup, the new 768L-II maximizes productivity, performance, and comfort when carrying hefty loads over long distances in challenging conditions. “Profitability and productivity are critical in the woods, and as loggers take to new areas for jobs, they need dependable machines that are built with these niche applications in mind,” said Matthew Flood, product marketing manager, John Deere. “With our new 768L-II Bogie Skidder, we’re delivering a purpose-built machine
that navigates tough terrain, such as swamps or steep slopes. Providing distinct features, the John Deere bogie skidder helps loggers maximize their potential, regardless of the conditions.” The 281-horsepower 768LII features heavy-duty bogie axles, which incorporate large components to maximize durability and stability for long axle and tire life. The heavy-duty axles are purpose-built for tough applications, effortlessly pulling heavy loads and maneuvering tough terrain. The smooth, stable operation results in reduced machine vibration, ultimately minimizing operator fatigue. Another key feature is the excellent tractive ability and floatation. When combined with the bogie

axles, ground pressure is reduced, allowing the 768L-II to work in wet terrain not accessible with a four-wheel skidder. As a result, the harvesting window is extended, adding more working days to the calendar. The new arch design provides the operator with an expansive rearward view of the grapple and work area, providing excellent visibility. Improving maneuverability, the long wheelbase and boom-arch envelope boost reach and lift capability for the boom and grapple, increasing dexterity in the woods. The tight turning radius enhances agility at the landing. “The John Deere bogie skidder is hands down twice as good as a regular four-tire skidder. It’s just all-around better in my book for productivity and ground disturbance,” said Jason Dawson of Triple J Logging. “With the 768L-II, you can carry twice as much of a load, especially in wet conditions and on the steep terrain, without tearing the ground up.” The 768L-II retains the other customer-favorite features introduced on the L-II product lineup. Streamlined and redesigned electrical and hydraulic systems result in improved uptime and increase guarding and protection
of key components. An increased grapple squeeze force and twospeed winch further increase productivity, while articulation steering sensors improve the operator experience. Highly regarded by customers, all L-Series II models feature a spacious cab, including ample storage space, configurable controls, and an effective HVAC system. Armrest-mounted electrohydraulic controls offer accessible, hand-finger operation of all machine functions, and joystick steering provides smooth control of steer, direction, and ground speed. The industryexclusive Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) marries the efficiency of a direct-drive transmission with the smoothness of a hydrostatic drive. As a result, CVT provides more power to the ground by sensing the load, increasing torque and tractive effort as needed to maintain the desired speed.

E Solving cooling problems Clogged radiators place a heavy strain on agricultural machines & significantly increase fuel consumption. With the Cleanfix reversible fan, machines work longer, more productively, & more efficiently
IFI can confirm how this Cleanfix agricultural report has equal benefits for the forestry and biomass industries.
ach agricultural season comes with its own challenges. To ensure that agricultural machines are 100% operational at all times, farmers must make the right investments. The strain on agricultural machinery during dirty and dusty work such as plowing, mowing, and harvesting is enormous. Grass, dust, and dirt clog the radiator. To continue meeting the engine cooling requirements, the fan needs more drive power, which leads to higher fuel consumption. What’s more, the risk of overheating the engine increases. Tractors with front power take-off applications are particularly

ince 1928, the forest has been central to Hultdins, and from those early days there has been refinement work that is constantly present and permeates their business. For more than 90 years, they have developed forestry products for the whole world. To constantly develop both the company and the products is part of Hultdins DNA. Therefore, they challenge the market and themselves to continuously improve their products that make it easier for contractors to work smarter and not harder.
Tobias Åman, Hultdins, CEO
Hultdins recently appointed CEO, Mr Tobias Åman, with many years of experience in the industry says. “- I am honoured to take over as CEO and to be given the opportunity to lead a company with such a strong brand, expertise and innovative power. I look forward together with both employees and customers to take the next step in the company’s development and to continue creating innovative and sustainable solutions for efficient forestry.” Hultdins headquarter is in Malå in northern Sweden, where the counties of Västerbotten and Lapland meet. Damping System (HDS} Hultdins damping system (HDS) enables you to work faster and improves the machine’s service life – as well as your health. Hydraulic oil is an excellent means to use in cylinders to transfer force because it is so incompressible.
Hultdins MultiGrip, multi-use grapples are for fixed mount use on excavator-based machines. They incorporate over 50 years of experience from Hultdins log grapple designs. The MG grapples are offered in configurations optimized for Indexator XR rotators and all tiltrotator brands and coupler types.
Supercut Series
Supercut 100s “Every other tree in the world is harvested with a Hultdins SuperCut – and that says a lot about the knowledge we have accumulated over the years. Our goal is to make your work as painless as possible.” Anders Strömberg, Hultdins sales department.
But this incompressibility also means that it transmits vibrations and jolts that fatigue both the machine and the operator. The dampers from Hultdins reduce these undesirable forces without decreasing the machine’s performance, on the contrary the productivity increases. For more information: www.hultdins.com

PONSSE wins esteemed Red Dot product design award The new Future Cabin included in the PONSSE Scorpion launched in February has won a product design award in the internationally acclaimed Red Dot design competition. The award in question was the Best of the Best award in the Product Design category, granted for the cabin’s innovative design. This was the highest recognition that could be achieved in the competition, granted to the best products of the various award categories. In February, Ponsse introduced to the market a thoroughly modernised Scorpion harvester range that meets all the requirements of today’s forestry work. The Scorpion’s characteristics include its excellent visibility and handling. One of the most prominent changes is the new one-piece windscreen that extends to the roof of the cabin, offering even better visibility and work safety under all conditions. In addition, the unique crane solution
offers an excellent visibility in every direction. The new Scorpion raises productivity and ergonomics in harvesting to an even higher level, and sets a new standard for the operator’s working environment. “The starting point for the development of the new Scorpion’s cabin was once again forest machine operators and their feedback. This discussion is extremely important to us, and we engage in it continuously as part of our everyday work. The cabin workspace, for which we received this great award, was modified to make it more practical and to develop it into a quiet workplace with a view to support the operator’s comfort and well-being. The operator’s wellbeing during work is key to the machine’s productive operation. It is great that the cabin has received such an esteemed award for innovative design as well. Eacom’s Elk Lake sawmill to get new continuous dry kiln EACOM Timber Corporation has announced an investment of $8.9M to equip its Elk Lake sawmill with a new, state-of-the art continuous dry kiln (CDK). Expected to be fully operational by early fall, the CDK will allow for continuous drying of lumber, reducing production bottlenecks and energy consumption. This will be the second such installation for EACOM, the first having been installed in 2017 at its Timmins sawmill. “This significant investment in Elk Lake is a testament not only to EACOM’s commitment to technological innovation and being best-in-class, but also to our longterm vision for this region. Built over 50 years ago, this mill has thrived alongside the community thanks to sustainable forestry practices, and now, with this latest addition, we are confident it will be an important partner for many more years to come,” EACOM President
and CEO Kevin Edgson. In addition to being more energy efficient, the new system will eliminate the use of both diesel fuel and propane which are currently being used as part of the energy mix for heating the buildings on-site and two kilns. Going forward, all building heat and the new CDK will be exclusively powered by direct fired natural gas, a much cleaner energy source. “The pandemic and subsequent demand for our essential products highlighted the need to fast track some of these investments and maximize our production capacity. We are proud that the fiber we harvest sustainably around Elk Lake is turned into homes for families across North America, as well as paper, cardboard, sanitary masks, and is even used in medication,” explains Mr. Edgson. The Elk Lake sawmill is an economic driver for the town and surrounding area, supporting over

140 workers directly, a further 210 jobs in woodlands operations, and hundreds more via vendors, contractors and transporters. Since 2016, EACOM has invested nearly $100M across its 9 facilities to maintain and upgrade equipment. Kevin Edgson, President & CEO, EACOM
John Deere further enhances GP-Series Motor Graders with industry-exclusive features Adding industry-exclusive features, John Deere further demonstrates the precision of its Grade Pro (GP) Series motor graders. Building upon the releases of Machine Damage Avoidance and exclusive Blade-Stow added in November 2020, two additional industryexclusive features, Auto-Pass and Auto-Shift PLUS, further enhance machine capability. These fully programmable, intuitive and versatile features are ideal for any job, and help increase productivity with new and seasoned operators. “The John Deere motor grader lineup has a legacy of technological and mechanical innovation, dating back decades, with the notable introduction of the industry’s first mastless 3D grade control system in 2019,” said Matt Goedert, solutions marketing manager, John Deere. “Fast forward to today, and we’re still striving to deliver industryleading capabilities that allow any operator — new or experienced — to work more efficiently on the job site. The latest features build upon that legacy, allowing us to put even more power and precision into the
hands of the operator.” The industry-exclusive AutoPass feature programs machine movements at the beginning and end of grading passes. While adjusting the speed of these movements and rotating the blade 180 degrees, the machine will simultaneously place the blade on the ground while preparing for the next pass. Available as an option on the GP-Series models and standard on the SmartGrade™ motor graders, this feature can also be programmed to raise and rotate the blade at the end of a grading pass, mirroring the finished angle. Building upon the success of last year’s launch of the AutoShift transmission, Auto-Shift PLUS, also an industry–exclusive feature, removes the need for using the inching pedal. This enables the operator to use the throttle and brake, offering increased control of the machine. Auto-Shift PLUS allows for the machine to come to a complete stop without stalling, helping reduce fatigue while cutting smoothly around obstacles or structures. Another standard feature
John Deere enhances GP-Series Motor Graders with industry-exclusive features now included on all GP-Series machines is Configurable Float. With this feature, float switches can be programmed to control any auxiliary function, allowing programming of up to three float switches through the monitor, which adds versatility in applications where auxiliary functions are used often. Now a standard feature on the SmartGrade motor graders, SmartGrade Remote Support connects the dealer to the machine, even from miles away. The dealer can troubleshoot
machine issues and update grade control software from the dealership, reducing downtime. For customers, SmartGrade Remote Support enables the remote transfer of project files, eliminating the need to visit the machine in person. Additionally, any machine issues can be addressed from a remote location, providing an efficient solution for equipment fleets of all sizes.

John Deere realigning its forestry technology - ‘Precision Forestry initiative’ The advancement of forestry equipment has typically focused on generating more powerful machines. Now, John Deere has launched a new tech-driven initiative that will marry strength with intelligence. Through the Precision Forestry initiative, Deere will reorganize its technology portfolio and increase its efforts in delivering solutions designed to increase efficiency and productivity in the woods. “It’s not about getting bigger and stronger in the woods all the time,” said Graham Hinch, Deere’s sales and marketing director for the western hemisphere. “It’s about delivering more intelligent, connected machines that address our customers’ needs.”
Smart Industrial The forestry tech initiative aligns with Deere’s overarching Smart Industrial operating model. The operating model, announced last summer, aims to accelerate its success via the integration of smart technology innovation with its legacy of manufacturing. Precision Forestry is a more descriptive term for what customers can expect from the John Deere technology suite, including real-time, map-based production planning and tracking capabilities, along with new and evolving operator assistance capabilities. “With technology, we believe that loggers need to embrace working smarter, not harder. The logging industry is built on hard work – it’s part of the industry’s DNA,” said Matthew Flood, product marketing manager for skidders and the
27th September 1st October 2021
Precision Forestry initiative at John Deere. “We want to complement that work ethic with machine intelligence and system-level integration, delivering the tools loggers need to increase efficiency and performance in the woods.”
A game changer Flood explained technology is a game changer for the forestry industry. While forestry machines have become more powerful, there remains a 40 per cent variation in productivity on Deere’s machines. “That variation comes specifically from the operator sitting in the seat. It comes from their experience level and the efficiency they have to offer on that machine,” Flood said. “We need to start to focus on having our machines easier to operate, and really allow an inexperienced operator to get the same productivity out of that machine as an expert operator.” Machines will evolve to become smarter, and capable of adapting to various situations, regardless of who is seated in the cab. “We look to have machines that provide feedback and guide operators. Potentially, someday, they can prevent operators from making a poor decision,” Flood said. As well, Precision Forestry will see an era where more accurate data can be harvested from machines. “As we have this accurate information and data, we can look at our machines as a system, rather than just individual machines and individual machine efficiencies,” Flood said.

Microtec receives first type examination certificate for a round timber measuring system in Germany On February 10, 2021, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig issued a type examination certificate according to module B for the round timber measuring system of the type Logeye-DE-700 from Microtec. This creates the prerequisites for using this type of measuring device for legally compliant invoicing of logs according to the new MessEG/MessEV in Germany. Since 01.01.2015, the new Measuring and Calibration Act (MessEG) and the new Measuring and Calibration Ordinance (MessEV) have come into force in Germany, which newly regulates the calibration system. On the basis of this law, the new measuring device type “round timber measuring systems” was introduced on 12.02.2020 by the PTB’s Rule Determination Committee (REA). In addition to the proven “Fixed Angle” (FW) method, this measuring device type enables diameter determinations of round timber with the “Variable Angle”
(VW) method. With the “Fixed Angle” method, even with the new type of device, it is possible to continue to invoice roundwood according to common practice (in the sense of continuity of existing “roundwood measuring systems”). The measuring method “Variable Angle” has the advantage of measuring logs independent of their position and thus enables highest repeatability. Within the scope of the type examination according to Module B, extensive measurements were carried out on logs under practical conditions using a mobile fringe projection measuring system specially developed for such reference measurements by PTB in Braunschweig. In addition, measurements were performed under extreme environmental conditions such as temperatures ranging from -30°C to +45°C. Due to the outstanding cooperation with PTB, it could be proven that the new log measuring system meets all requirements for a log measuring system.
The measuring device type Logeye-DE-700 from Microtec measures logs with and without bark without contact. The measurement is based on the principle of laser triangulation, whereby the measuring points on the log are recorded with a total of 8 cameras. The use of dual camera technology, which captures the measurement points from two different angles, minimizes shadowing and thus significantly
increases measurement accuracy. “With the newly approved measuring device type LogeyeDE-700, our customers from now on have the possibility to use a measuring device according to the current state of the art for legally compliant billing of logs and at the same time they can rely on the proven Microtec quality,” emphasizes Arianna Giudiceandrea, CSO at Microtec.

The efficient layout affords ample room for the new technology in a very productive operation
Montrose Forest Products: Expanding fortunes The bottleneck at this Colorado plant is gone and in its place is an efficient operation focused on a new line of high-value production
M
ontrose Forest Products recently added a new planer mill to its operation in Colorado, to expand its product mix and align it with its sister mills. Through this investment the mill also planned to ease the bottleneck that was constraining production at the sawmill. Today the new line is hitting the targets Montrose set out, and several more that were unexpected. The Montrose operation comprises a sawmill, planer mill, and two lumber dry kilns, and prior to this latest project it was strictly processing Engelmann spruce and lodgepole pine into stud length lumber. The Neiman team wanted
to expand the scope of this mill’s products to more closely align with its other three operations that produce 1x4, 1x6, and 1x8 lumber products. The team contacted the US Forest Service and came to an agreement to include green ponderosa pine in the Montrose mill’s mix. This paved the way to add 1" products to the Montrose operation.
The vision The existing planer mill technology had long become outdated, and was causing bottlenecks that adversely impacted the sawmill’s production and the overall
efficiency of the operation. Mike Kusar, Montrose Mill Manager explained: “With newer technology at the sawmill we were making more lumber than the planer mill could keep up with, so we knew we were losing out on opportunity. We were also interested in what automated grading technology could do for us.” Another Neiman mill, Devils Tower Forest Products in Hulett, Wyoming, had recently invested in a USNR Transverse High Grader (THG) for its dry mill, so the team was familiar with the benefits of this technology. Mike said USNR was chosen to supply this project on a turn-key basis because of recent successful projects at the Neiman mills. In addition, his team traveled to
We had great communication and collaboration throughout the design and execution phases of the project John Jacques, USNR Turn-Key Project Manager several mills with USNR’s planer mill technology to see how it was benefiting those operations. Service and support was another big factor in the decision making process, and the many positive business dealings the Neiman mills had with USNR was a strong motivation to trust USNR for this latest major investment. Mike reiterated: “That’s one of the reasons we chose USNR. We know we can get in contact with USNR folks any day of the year for phone support, parts, and service scheduling.”

The low-profile stacker is a real high speed design, operating at speeds in the range of 23 tiers per minute. Included in the project is USNR’s THG with Deep Learning technology for the best automated grading capability available today. The THG features an end grain scanner used to locate a board relative to its parental log. This provides the optimizer with data for use in knot projection and pith location. The THG integrates USNR’s WinTally system for management of sorts for targeted products the mill wishes to produce.
USNR’s MillTrak machine visionbased system manages the flow of boards at the planer infeed, and the MyMill mobile sorter control monitors and controls the sorter from any location within the mill’s network. The turn-key portion of the project contributed overall project management; site engineering for foundations, civil work, new metal building, and support steel; geotechnical soils reports and recommendations; electrical wiring; data and communications wiring; site utilities; excavation; residual systems; dust and shavings extraction; planer room; mill air system; embeds; grounding grid permits and inspections; construction management; and installation of all machinery. John Jacques, USNR turn-key Project Manager: “We did not encounter any serious challenges during the construction phase. It was a pleasure working with
the Montrose Forest Products and Nieman team. We had great communication and collaboration throughout the design and execution phases of the project.”
Results Mike commented on the results the mill is experiencing with this project: “The new planer mill has improved our overall efficiency and relieved our bottleneck, resulting in a reduction of over 20% in planer mill run hours. In the new planer mill we are able to process all the products from the sawmill in 40 h/ week, and we are able to run our sawmill full out now. Our packages also look better and neater. “Before the project I had concerns with the switch from human graders to the THG, but USNR did a great job of training our quality control staff prior to the startup.” Mike also talked about the reduction of labour and increased
employee satisfaction: “Through attrition we’ve lowered our headcount in the planer mill by more than 10 people. Our new facility has also resulted in improved overall employee satisfaction with a nice new building, new workstations, and everything automated. This will help with employee retention. “Lastly, with this new technology we look forward to being able to offer more products to our customers than previously. That’s one of the key goals for taking on this investment. It will contribute to a safer, more efficient, and more profitable operation.”
The Transverse High Grader shares the same Deep Learning optimization platform with all other USNR vision grade scanning products: Lineal High Grader, BioVision for green mill grade scanning and AddVantage chop and rip scan products for the secondary manufacturing sector. Recent additions to this platform are the NV4g and GSc2000 for green and dry veneer grade scanning. This technology is proven on a variety of species and wood processing sectors.

Examples of water pocket detection displayed in the optimization software
Using AI makes sense Integration of artificial intelligence technology can be easily achieved to boost sawmill performance
B
ID Group’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be integrated with existing scanners and across most existing sawmill equipment in the market today. That is certainly the case for bark detection, split detection on
logs, wood species detection, and wood defect detection. “AI is here to stay,” BID Group stated. “We’ve made it easily accessible so you can take advantage of the accuracy, speed and high-performance AI offers.”
Example of a Bark Detection Summary report
24 International Forest Industries | APRIL / MAY 2021
AI bark detection with lineal scanners Traditionally, bark detection required someone to observe stems and logs, or analyze wood chips. This time-consuming task can now be replaced with a bark detector. BID Group’s Bark Detection with AI identifies the percentage of residual bark on a stem or a log. This information can be used to determine the performance of the debarker. The Bark Detection software can
be integrated either to the scanner used for the bucking optimizer or the primary breakdown scanner. The existing 3DPro laser heads capture images that are analyzed for bark and this information is displayed in the software interface to show the areas of wood and bark on the log.
SCANNING & OPTIMISATION – BID GROUP
LUMBER PROCESSING
In this example, several images display the residual bark detected by AI on one log. In the yellow frame on the left, the blue areas identify the bark detected by AI The information is also sent to the Bucking optimizer database. The bark detection data is then organized and displayed in the debarker report (by diameter and position) and in the primary breakdown dashboard. This information is always available and can be accessed from a computer or any mobile device.
Split detection with bucking or OLI scanner The split detection on logs was recently improved with AI. This functionality can also be integrated either to the scanner used for the Bucking optimizer or the OLI. The split detection data is used to find the best optimization solution for your products. This is a valuable feature when processing very dry wood.
Wood species detection with AI The SpecPro can be integrated to an existing Comact transverse EdgExpert or TrimExpert in the sawmill, a GradExpert in the planer mill, or installed independently. It is also possible to add it to another manufacturer’s scanner. The
27th September 1st October 2021
upgrade and commissioning are simple to execute, and excellent results are obtained quickly. The SpecPro offers the most accurate wood species detection in the industry. Its efficiency is not affected by any level of moisture content in the wood and it also works very well with frozen wood. This system is based on Deep Learning (artificial intelligence). It was designed to optimize wood drying but it can also detect species once the wood is dry. The SpecPro uses color vision then analyzes boards of different widths/thickness. There are no maximum board dimensions. The SpecPro is low maintenance and the system can detect multiple species simultaneously with consistent results over 98%. Note that the SpecPro can also detect and process crayon marks (grade marks, trim marks, cut-intwo marks, etc.) on boards.
Integrate wood defect detection with AI on a TrimExpert Wood defect detection with AI was developed extensively for the Comact GradExpert and
10 – 13 November
all detections are available on the TrimExpert and transverse EdgExpert, namely the detection of wood species, knots, rot, water pockets, and crayon marks. Note that it is also possible to integrate rot detection on a Comact Trimmer without vision, using the SpecPro.
WeighPro scale The WeighPro scale can be installed before or after a transverse trimmer scanner. It is used to determine the weight of a board that allows to calculate the wood density. With this data, it is possible to categorize the wood by density to optimize the drying. The WeighPro can handle any board width, length, or thickness. This scale is compatible with dry, humid, or frozen wood and all wood species. The weight precision is around 5% from 0-200 kg (may vary depending on the chain noise and vibration).
Determine optimal wood drying solutions BID Group created a winning combination to determine optimal wood drying solutions. When
using the wood species and water pocket detection with AI, combined with the WeighPro scale, data is obtained for specific and optimal wood drying solutions. Based on this information, wood pieces can be grouped according to drying requirements to ensure uniform bundle drying. This saves energy and avoids loss of wood quality (splits, shakes, and warp when the wood is too dry or downgrading when it is too wet, and eventually mold development).
Artificial Intelligence offers endless possibilities These examples demonstrate how our AI platform can be integrated easily in a mill. In the short and medium term, our complete range of machines will benefit from developments in applications that go beyond optimization. BID Group’s objective is to meet the client’s current and future needs in an outstanding manner with its brand portfolio and offer a return on investment unparalleled by competition. All of this is supported by BID Group’s renowned 24/7 service.

It’s an honor for us to be able to supply the new kilns for Anundsjösågen. It’s an excellent testament to our collaborative relationship and we look forward to starting the project,” says Jon Lindberg, Sales Manager at Valutec. Anundsjösågen invested in two similar kilns from Valutec as late as in 2015, which helped facilitate their choice of supplier this time around. “The kilns we bought in 2015 have worked well and, of course, the operators having experience in using and operating the machines has its advantages,” says David Markusson. “We know Valutec and how they work, while at the same time we feel a sense of security in knowing that the company, like us, has its headquarters up in the north of Sweden.” The kilns Anundsjösågen
invests in are FB continuous kilns, built in stainless steel with an annual capacity of approx. 50,000 cubic meters (21,118 MBF) per kiln. They are equipped with pressure frames, for minimal deformation of the uppermost lumber layer, and Valutec’s heat recovery system. The delivery also includes the Valmatics 4.0 control system. Installation of the new lumber kilns will begin in August 2021.

Scanmeg releases TS5 The latest development from the Scanmeg portfolio of products is an upgrade on the hugely successful TS4 scanner
T
he TS4 has been on the market for a while and is a key part of Scanmeg’s scanning range, representing one of the most advanced sensor systems and scanners available to sawmillers, regardless of the specific production challenges being faced down. The 3D Laser technology is the described as the most efficient developments from Scanmeg, exceptionally proficient in working
on digital profiles and shapes of objects. The product series traces and applies a laser line to the object. Using an array camera, points are detected along the line to describe the profile and shape of the object. The TS5 is a single-laser line canner that is fast, compact and robust. This line of products is ideal for measuring the shape of a tree, cant, boards or any dimensional object by the principle of triangulation.
New identity – for a stronger Holmen You may have noticed that Holmen has changed colors, icons and a new logo in their digital channels, in the annual report and in social media. It is part of Holmen’s new brand identity and affects how they look and communicate. The new identity is based on the interplay between nature and technology. Holmen creates a sustainable future for customers and society, and it is through nature and technology that they
make it happen. The story of Holmen begins in the forest, in the meeting between the power of nature and man’s curiosity and engineering. To clarify its story, they have developed a new brand platform and visual identity. The new identity draws inspiration from this duality – the meeting between nature and technology. Soft shapes meet sharp corners and earthy tones contrast with energy-rich,

stronger colours. A living brand that can proudly represent the whole of Holmen – from Forest and Energy to Wood Products, Cardboard and Paper. “The entire group is part of our circular business and our new sharp brand expression that clearly reflects Holmen today; a futuresmart, circular business with the power to make a difference and which drives the transition to a sustainable society. ”
The TS4 was a highly advanced product but limited when the process was exposed to ambient light. The next logical step for Scanmeg, therefore, was to offer that same quality product without the light-issue barrier. “Scanmeg’s TS5 is that new generation of products we were aiming for,” the company stated. “With our innovative technique, this product improves the results with ambient light immunity. “Quality results and accuracy; you can operate this new TS5 in all kinds of light whether natural or artificial. You can operate the product in sunlight, if necessary. This means you no longer have to shield the line from sunlight by blocking windows or keeping doors closed.” Triangulation technology means the projection of a laser line on an object allows the Type TS scanner to precisely measure the XY coordinates of the intersection of the laser line with the object. This allows the collection of all the necessary data, which is stored in it a digitized format that can be sent on demand to other devices to optimize the application. “The TS5 could improve the processing line at many sawmills, adding a layer of convenience and resilience, while at the same time building on the fundamental scanning technology that has proven itself in the market over so many years.”
SCANNING & OPTIMISATION – AUTOLOG
Autolog introduces R-TRAC rotation tracking The latest innovation from scanning expert Autolog is a step-change in technology
A
utolog has launched a “revolutionary” sensor called R-TRAC. This new sensor is taking live degree measurements while the log is rotating. R-TRAC is a fully autonomous system that is independent of the log optimizer geometric model. It works with all types of log turners, no matter which optimizer brand is installed. No mechanical modifications
LUMBER PROCESSING
are required to the log turner or to the infeed chain. It is easily integrated with any control system (PLC), as R-TRAC allows the use of a closed loop feedback to control the position of the log turner cylinders based on the rotation instead of their linear movement. The R-TRAC system maintains a continuous reading of the rotation angle while the log is in the field of view as opposed to applying a rotation correction after the rotation is complete. The working principle is quite simple: a set of data is acquired for every inch the log advances; each set of data contains images of the log’s surface and geometric data; a rotation measurement is calculated for each pair of consecutive sets of data that gives a rotation value per inch of traveling. The cumulative log rotation measurement is sent to the PLC and the PLC uses these measurements to control the log turner positions using a PID loop to turn the log “perfectly” each time. R-TRAC has a precision better than 5° of standard deviation using all data (no outliers removed as many do in their calculation). It comes with advanced statistical tools to help track the performance of the turners. At this time, the
maximum speed is 600 ft/minute and it can measure logs from 4 in to 24 in. The figure included here shows the results of a test on 50 logs in a sawmill where the R-TRAC system is currently installed. The blue represents rotation error of a log turner system without the use of R-TRAC. The red is the same system but with the R-TRAC. The curve is a lot narrower with the R-TRAC. This can give users high gain on their recovery. R-TRAC standard deviation in this test was 4.2° compared to 9.8° without it. This is more than 5° gain on the log rotation error. An important point to note is the mean value. With the R-TRAC, it is practically at 0° compared to 1.1° without it. In summary, R-TRAC is a realtime system that is compatible with all types of log turners without requiring any mechanical modification to the log turner. It turns the log perfectly each time without the need to correct the turning at the end. The standard deviation on the error is less than 5° using all data .

LUMBER PROCESSING
Wood optimization with 3D laser and color scanning Ring layout of Gocator® 2880 laser line scanners scanning a log travelling along a lineal transport system
Margins for sawyers across the world are getting tighter, making it more imperative than ever to get every cent of value out of each log processed at the mill
I
ncreasing pressure on pricing and processing costs requires that lumber manufacturing extract maximum volume and value from every log. As a solution, 3D laser and colour scanning are able to deliver dramatic improvements in yield and value recovery.
Log optimization Logs are cut into semi-finished boards (flitches) at up to 30 logs per minute, requiring a large amount of data to be collected and analyzed in a short time. When logs travel on a sharp chain into the mill, the typical scanner configuration mounts three, four, or more laser-line scanner heads in a ring layout spaced to provide full coverage. As the log moves through the scan plane, a full 3D map of the log surface is generated using 3D
laser scanners. Cutting patterns are then computed and sent to a downstream gang saw that strips away the outer flitches and produces a center cant. In headrig carriage systems (a moving platform that positions, rotates, and transports the log through a single bandsaw), multi-line laser scanner heads are mounted on one or two sides of the carriage along the entire log length, such that a single capture produces profile data every 6 in. The snapshot data is used to make decisions on the next cut for the current opening face. Moving the platform just 6 in produces even greater shape detail. Cutting decisions are an accumulation of multiple scans and back and forth passes through the bandsaw until the final cant
is dumped for downstream processing. Once logs are reduced to flitches and cants, secondary operations are required to edge pieces for width then trim to length at two different machine centers— an edger and a trimmer optimizer.
Board optimization In both edger and trimmer machine centers, transverse 3D scanning is used to digitize each wood piece and generate 3D shape, 2D surface colour, and tracheid (i.e. laser scatter effect in wood) data. This information is used to determine optimal cutting patterns to yield maximum value recovery for varying dimensions and grades. Transverse conveyor systems use multi-point laser scanners

mounted above and below the wood flow to build fully stitched 3D models based on the principles of laser triangulation and colour imaging running at 3 kHz. Speed of data acquisition is critical in handling typical unit rates between 70 to 300 boards per minute.
Modular board scanning systems for finished grading With Gocator® 200 series multipoint scanners, a modular board scanning system can be easily configured to mix 3D profiles, tracheid, and color data. Color is used only on the wane-up surface, while profile and tracheid is used on both top and bottom board surfaces.
Multi-point scanning for tracheid Not only do multi-point scanners minimize scanner frame space and capture both edges of a board, they also achieve another critical capability: Measurement of tracheid effect. When a laser spot is projected onto healthy tracheid wood cells, laser light scatters into the cells in the direction of cell growth. If the wood fibre is dead (as in a knot), then the laser light does not scatter. This effect can be measured to identify quality wood from defective wood and even determine grain angle. Adding colour vision for defect detection Colour scanning identifies surface defects such as knots, splits, rot, speck, beetle damage, and more, resulting in powerful grade-based recovery optimization (i.e. where lumber is cut into boards to obtain the highest grade as opposed to extracting the highest volume). Higher grade output leads to
higher dollar returns from the input wood fibre. Colour scanning requires the addition of white light to illuminate the board surface and megapixel colour cameras to build high resolution colour images. Resolutions down to 0.25 mm are typical in today’s high-performance colour scanners. The bolt-on Gocator 205
vision module (along with a white LED light bar that is strobed to maximize efficiency and lifetime) provides Gocator® 200 scanners with color vision for detection and measurement of surface defects including knots, splits, and rot.
The future of lumber optimization with Gocator The Gocator smart sensor feature set offers onboard processing to configure triggering, exposure, resolution, board detection, filtering, stitching, measurement, built-in communication protocols to other factory equipment using PLC protocols. With an open source SDK, customers can build sophisticated, modular scanning solutions and deliver unique capabilities that are specific to mill requirements.

Flexibility & versatility top priorities Big brands continue fight for market share in chipper sector
P
eterson, Jenz, Precision Husky and Komptech – these are four of the biggest and most respected names in the biomass chipper supplier game, and they span the globe in terms of origin and reach. This year once again sees these key suppliers drift further from their roots as purveyors of raw power and more toward suppliers
of multiple business opportunity for the contractors buying these units. These opportunities take the form of a greater range of options in terms of chipping quality, mobility and efficiencies/ serviceability. That is not to say power isn’t the first consideration for buyers of chipping technology and therefore for the brands supplying
that market; it remains the chief requirement for those in the chipping trade. But the race to the top of the raw-power tree is now

T
he highly efficient Terminator xtron shredder from Komptech processes a wide variety of materials with adjustable grain sizes. Whether waste wood, green waste or household, bulky and commercial waste, with its high roller teeth and a powerful motor in the latest emissions standard, the newcomer in the Terminator series “masters various shredding tasks”, according to the manufacturer. Companies and service providers who want to react more flexibly and economically to changing order situations should benefit from this.
New V-shredding unit The Terminator xtron has a newly developed shredding unit to ensure powerful shredding with constant processing quality when changing materials. Its features are 16 specially shaped and significantly elongated roller teeth and a respectable outer diameter of 1,170 mm. The high teeth ensure a constant throughput even with bulky waste or green waste. The enlarged outer circumference prevents process interruptions from being wrapped around the roller. The shredding work
is supported by 17 teeth on the counter comb. The kerf between the roller and the comb is hydraulically adjustable and keeps the selected distance constant. In this way, the degree of comminution can be optimally adjusted to the following process steps and a constant grain size is guaranteed.

The new HEM 922 has a real infeed height of 900 mm and an optimised draw-in which is extremely useful when chipping impact debris and pruning shrubs. 1,100 hp system power are providing an enormous performance potential
Optimised draw-in The Jenz Chippertruck hybrid is the flagship among the manufacturer’s suite of mobile chippers. Equipped with powerful dual engine technology and more than 1,100 hp system performance, the high power Jenz Chippertruck is a premium unit. The new HEM 922 is the successor to the previous HEM 821. The new chipper has been optimised across its functions from the feed area to user-friendliness, making it more flexible in applications.
Among other things, the new Chippertruck hybrid scores points with increased intake height, now 900 mm, and noticeably more aggressive draw-in behaviour. Many changes were made to the draw-in: table geometry and
inclination of the draw-in table; draw-in speed; and top and bottom roller geometry and position. “Overall, the machine is now easier to feed and chews better. We call this effect ‘drop and forget’. This means that the driver puts the material down (“drop”) and can
fetch new material more quickly,” explains Hermeier. In addition to easier feeding, the woodchip quality increases because the material is fed to the drum in a more controlled manner. “The changes made have a very positive effect, especially when
“When people think of large chippers, they often think of huge wood piles in heating plants,” explains Hans Heinrich Hermeier, Product Manager and Junior Manager at Jenz. “We know that our customers are often caught between maximum throughput in the heating plant and the greatest possible flexibility in the forest or on the road. This is precisely the point we have addressed with the new HEM 922 chipping unit, which has been specially built for the selfpropelled chipper.” Maintenance made easy: The Maintenance accessibility has been optimised and includes many details like the fully integrated tool concept for daily cleaning and maintaining 36 International Forest Industries | APRIL / MAY 2021

Performance without end The most powerful Jenz mobile chipper has 1,100 hp of system power through dual engine technology. The drive concept has been taken over from its predecessor, which impresses not only with unbridled power but also with simplicity. “The Caterpillar auxiliary engine has only one task: chipping. It passes on almost all of its torque of approximately 3,500 Nm to the drum via a 10-groove drive belt. The complete machine hydraulics and the propulsion drive are supplied via the HGV engine. That means the Cat is only running when it is chipping, not otherwise,” says Hermeier.
Agricultural tyres for even more off-road mobility The off-road mobility required
in practice can be ensured by single agricultural tyres on the drive axles. This means that the self-propelled vehicle is now completely on single tyres. “The elimination of the dual tyres eliminates the need for cleaning when switching to road travel, and the self-cleaning agricultural tyres give the machine unimagined off-road capabilities,” says Hermeier.

A Tigercat 2000 shear bunching eucalyptus in Australia
Tigercat builds a full line of innovative felling attachments designed to match the high performance and productivity of Tigercat carriers. The product range includes disc saw and shear felling heads, fixed wrist and directional bar saw felling heads, and a growing line of harvesting heads. Tigercat felling attachments are used around the world and can be matched to virtually any type of mechanized felling application from small diameter pulpwood and biomass clear fell applications to selective felling of oversized, high-value hardwood.
2000 bunching shear The original Tigercat bunching shears were designed in the mid-1990s for North American pine thinning operations. Over the years, the evolution of the 2000 series shear has made into what is considered the premium plantation eucalyptus felling head for the blue gum applications in highly abrasive
soil conditions and rocky terrain. With fast shear cycles, the 2000 has proven to be highly productive, and extremely reliable. Compared with a disc saw, maintenance requirements are less and bushfire risk is minimized. The shear arm pivot bearing design is extremely strong and reliable. The chassis is constructed with hardened steel, with bronze alloy bushings installed in the grab and accumulator arms. The shear blades are the toughest on the market and replaceable hardened steel wear strips are available for very sandy soil conditions. The massive 0.62 m2 accumulation pocket allows for larger bunches, subsequently boosting skidder production and reducing fuel consumption as the skidder can more quickly accumulate a load. The shear improves the flow of the entire harvesting system.
5300 Bunching saw The Tigercat 5300 bunching saw boosts feller buncher productivity in smaller diameter plantation wood under 405 mm (16 in). It has greater accumulating capacity

The Tigercat 5195 for performance when cutting and shoveling than the 5000 bunching saw but the added weight of the additional trees and extra steel in the structure means that the 5300 is only suited to the full-sized Tigercat 870 series track carriers. Feller buncher productivity and efficiency improves because more trees are cut per cycle, reducing unnecessary machine travel. Skidder productivity and efficiency improves because the bunches are large, well aligned and easy to pick up.
5702-26 felling saw Tigercat’s 5702 felling saw has been a highly successful workhorse on Tigercat tracked and wheeled feller bunchers for almost two decades and now Tigercat has introduced an important evolution – the 5702-26 for tracked bunchers. The 5702-26 shares the same arms, horn, wrist and asymmetric geometry of the 5702 with a larger saw housing and blade to increase single-cut capacity, throat width and accumulation area. The 5702-26 features a 1,625 mm (64 in) diameter blade with 20 teeth spun at up to 1,050 rpm (max rated speed) delivering up to 30% more blade energy than the regular 5702. The single-cut capacity is 660 mm (26 in) for the 5702-26 compared to 580 mm (23 in) for the 5702. As with all Tigercat felling heads, the 5702-26 is designed for durability, long life and easy maintenance. It features durable, well-guarded, cushioned cylinders and strength-to-weight optimized frames. Hardened wear plates and replaceable liners are installed in critical areas. Heavy duty spindle and bearings in saw drive system can take the punishment from harsh forestry conditions.
The 5702-26 is best matched to Tigercat 870 series feller bunchers.
5185 fixed felling saw and 5195 directional felling saw Tigercat’s 5185 and 5195 felling saws are steadily increasing in popularity globally in large timber and steep slope operations. Contractors in native hardwood and other oversize timber applications are seeing benefits from the 5195 coupled with the LS855E shovel logger due to the excellent shovelling performance on steep slopes. This significantly decreases the amount of side cut skidder trails required to access the timber which is a big advantage in forests with strict regulations and stringent oversight. The 5195 can efficiently top the trees within the cut block. With continuous rotation, the head is quickly and easily repositioned and double cuts on steep slopes are performed quickly without moving the carrier. This makes the head versatile for oversized timber over 1 m in diameter. The 5195 has full 360° rotate with through-the-link central hosing for enhanced hose protection and extended hose life. Oversized twin grapple cylinders deliver high performance and control when felling cutting and shovelling. The fully fabricated chassis and grapple arms design provide strength and added longevity. The 5185 shares the saw performance and strength and longevity characteristics of the 5195. Where the 5185 excels is in its ability to control fell and place high value trees, avoiding breakage. s a leader in forestry, John Deere offers a full range of technology solutions designed to help maximize profitability for logging professionals and improve performance on the job site.
TimberMatic™ Maps and TimberManager™ TimberMatic Maps and TimberManager are the streamlined John Deere software solutions for loggers designed to enhance machine connectivity and communication. With this tandem solution, John Deere is providing an option that enables the industry to view full-tree and wheel cut-to-length operations in a single system and platform, opening the door to increased communication and connectivity. The TimberMatic Maps solution includes mapping software for use in the field, which utilizes a mobile network to share realtime production information between operators and back to the office. Data is collected through the sensors on the equipment while the production location is gathered through GPS technology. Information is then transmitted to the TimberMatic Maps and TimberManager systems. Managers can access the data using TimberManager, a web-based solution for PC, tablet, or mobile phone, allowing them to follow the progress of the work site remotely. “TimberManager allows me, when I have multiple crews running, to be 50 miles away and see what they’re seeing in real-

time. It keeps me from having to be at each job. I feel more secure,” said Dillon Stratton of D.M. Stratton LLC. Additionally, the map allows all operators to add markings, pointing out challenging terrain factors, such as an area with soft ground, a land boundary, or an overhead hazard. The real-time updates provide on-demand visibility to the entire crew. This software is particularly beneficial to loggers working close to the government and privately held land, as boundaries can quickly and easily be set-up digitally to
alert loggers to boundary lines while they are working. Particularly on wheeled cut-tolength machines, one of the key benefits of the software solutions is the ability to efficiently plan the work that needs to get done on the job site. The map provides the precise location, volume, and species of timber within the network of logging routes. As the timber is transported the operator can mark the map to indicate it has occurred, providing an exact volume count of the timber taken to the landing. This ultimately assists in simplifying planning for trailer transports and the onward movement of timber. “TimberManager and TimberMatic Maps has helped my operators.

One thing, when we first put it in use, within the first month, we noted a two load a day increase out of my skidder operator. And since then, I’ve trained probably four different operators using TimberManager and TimberMatic Maps. Just the technology as a whole improves operator training, especially for new operators. I can pull anybody off of the street right now, and if they can drive a pickup truck, I can put them in a skidder and, for my application, I can have them up to speed within seven operating days,” said Thomas Johnson of Thomas Johnson Logging.
Intelligent Boom Control John Deere makes operators tough jobs easier with its Intelligent Boom Control (IBC)
offering, available for the G-Series Forwarder lineup and select G-Series Wheeled Harvesters. With IBC, the operation of the boom is accurate, fast, and easy to operate. The operator now controls the boom directly instead of controlling each of the independent boom joint movements manually. The IBC system automatically adjusts the entire boom movement
and operation to that of the grapple, creating smoother boom movements and increasing operator comfort. Through IBC, unnecessary extra movements are limited, extending boom component wear life and allowing for faster cycle times. Additionally, for new operators, IBC accelerates the learning curve, increasing operator productivity.
Tom Reynolds of R&H Logging describes his experience with IBC on his 1210G Forwarder as seamless. “[With IBC,] it’s like the grapple is wired to your brain. It becomes part of your body — it’s as simple as reaching for a cup of coffee. You don’t have to think about it. It’s smooth, effortless, quick, and productive.”

The fully upgraded Opti 5G user interface together with the recently launched Opti8 computer sets a new standard for the usability of Ponsse forest machine information system Markku Savolainen, Ponsse Plc, Product Manager, Equipment Automation
Ponsse launches new generation Scorpion harvesters
P The latest range represents improvements in both productivity and comfort through varied innovations
onsse has launched a completely modernised range of Scorpion harvesters, which meets all the requirements of forestry today. The new Ponsse Scorpion takes harvest productivity and ergonomics to the “next level” and “sets a new standard” for the operator’s working environment, according to the manufacturer. The Scorpion harvester was first introduced to the general public in 2013 and has since become Ponsse’s flagship product. Soon after its launch, the Scorpion became a global sales success and an international symbol of responsible forestry. Over 1,200 Scorpions have already been made and can now be found in more than 25 countries around the world. Now, eight years later, the Scorpion has shed its skin. The stability of the Ponsse Scorpion is “in a class of its own” and provides power and productivity on environmental terms with small surface pressure. In product development, attention has been paid above all to even better work ergonomics, safety, cabin visibility and usability. “As earlier, development of the new Scorpion range has been based on feedback from forest machine users, which we have utilized to put the upgrades now being introduced into production,” says Jan Kauhanen, Product Manager, Harvesters, at Ponsse.
“The cabin workspace is now more practical, and the quiet Scorpion landscape office has been developed specifically with the operator’s comfort and ability to keep working in mind.” The Scorpion is characterised by its visibility and manoeuvrability. One of the most visible improvements is the new one-piece front window, which reaches all the way up to the cabin roof to offer even better visibility and safe working in any weather condition. In addition, the unique crane solution provides excellent visibility in all directions.
Fifth generation Ponsse Opti information system Among numerous new features, Scorpion and Scorpion King harvesters have been fitted out with an advanced fifth generation Ponsse Opti 5G information system and a completely upgraded user interface. The user-friendly information system is one of the most modern on the market and its smoothness and speed make for an exceptional user experience. “The fully upgraded Opti 5G user interface together with the recently launched Opti8 computer sets a new standard for the usability of Ponsse forest machine information systems,” explains Markku Savolainen, Product Manager, Equipment Automation at Ponsse.
“It’s also quick and simple for operators who have used the earlier Opti generation to switch over to using the new Opti 5G system.” The Opti 5G information system also enables the Ponsse Harvester Active Crane management system, which gives the harvester a new way to control the crane and work more efficiently. The operator can use Active Crane to control the movement of the harvester head instead of individual crane functions. This allows the operator to concentrate on timber processing rather than crane work. Active Crane is easily controlled using two levers, one of which controls the harvester head height from the ground, while the other controls the direction of the movement. The system also ensures that the crane’s functions slow automatically before the range of movement ends, thereby preventing irritating hits to the mechanical structures and operator. When the operator indicates the required location, Active Crane performs the lift and uses the boom and extension automatically. The PONSSE Opti 5G information system will initially be available at PONSSE Scorpion harvesters at Finnish and Swedish markets, with other areas to follow later.

The females burrow into the bark to lay their eggs, and the sap oozes out of the holes they make.” Bark beetles are a persistent problem in northwest Germany, where Tina and partner Arne Mertens run a tree management company, Baumpflege Mertens. The firm has been called in by the owners of a woodland adventure park near Surwold, where the insects are creating concern. “Last winter, we had to take down a significant portion of the park’s trees to get rid of the beetles, but now they’re back,” explains Tina. The park offers various attractions, including climbing platforms and zip line rides amongst the treetops. Visitor safety, therefore, depends on strong, healthy trees, and that implies dealing swiftly with bark beetles whenever they’re detected. “Once a tree’s got beetles in it, there’s not much choice but to take it down,” Tina continues. “The larvae feed on the soft wood just under the bark, loosening it and gradually killing the tree, so it pays to nip the problem in the bud if you can.” With buildings, healthy trees and elevated structures nearby, logger-style felling of whole trees by cutting at the base isn’t an option. Infected trees have to be

taken down in sections, starting from the top. “Arne goes up in the cherry picker and takes off a few meters at a time with a chainsaw, then lowers it down. My job is tidying everything up at ground level using the skid steer,” adds Tina. Mertens’ machinery fleet includes two Vermeer CTX100 mini skid steers. As Tina explains: “They’re ideal for this kind of work. Although the park has good access, it’s another matter in amongst the trees. The body of the CTX100 is less than a meter wide and we
opted for the wide configuration rubber-drive tracks. “I can take almost anywhere in a setting like this. It gets 10 out of 10 for maneuverability. And it’s really easy to operate – when we got it, I barely needed to practice with it because the joystick controls are so intuitive. Plus, the chariot-style wraparound platform means I can always see what I’m doing when operating the attachments.” In the adventure park, Tina is using the mini skid steer with a log grapple and with a brush grapple. “A felled tree that’s got bark beetle in it has to be taken offsite for destruction. Otherwise, the infestation continues to spread,” she said. “We take all the limbs and foliage off the trunk sections with a small chainsaw. That creates a lot of brush, which needs to be gathered up for chipping. “Using the brush grapple, I can shift a lot of material on my own in a short space of time. Without it, we’d need additional labor to move all the brush, which would be much more expensive. Once the brush is out of the way, the trunk sections need to go on the trailer for removal. All in all, there’s a lot of to-and-fro, and switching the grapples over for the different jobs. So being able to change attachments quickly and easily onsite is an absolute must for us.” Pest control is by no means Mertens’ only field of activity. “We’re all-around tree care and forestry contractors,” confirms Arne. “As well as business-to-
it’s also a question of business economics: turning a profit depends on getting work done within fixed time frames.” Understandably, therefore, Arne found his new 26-kW SC362 stump cutter a real asset, with its top-end torque of well over 70 Nm. The 43-centimeter high-speed cutter wheel also features AutoSweep control system monitoring which continuously adjusts engine speed and sweep rate for maximum efficiency.
Having a maneuverable, small-footprint machine meant that everything outside the island was virtually untouched Arne Mertons business services, we do work for local authorities and for private households. It’s very varied: we fell trees, and we do site clearance, crown cuts and pruning, chipping and stump cutting.” Until 2016, Mertens used to subcontract the stump cutting. Then Arne made a strategic decision to invest in a Vermeer SC362 stump cutter. “Private households want a contractor who can take care of everything. So, adding stump removal to our capabilities has really paid off. For example, just after we bought our first stump cutter, we got hired to deal with a number of overgrown trees that were threatening a property in Westoverledingen. “A mixture of broadleaf and evergreens: beautiful trees, but they’d been allowed to get out of control. They were shading the whole garden with their roots extending right up the foundations of the house, not to mention the risk of a large limbs or even a whole tree coming down in a gale.” In a single day, Mertens was able to take down a spruce, remove several spreading boughs from a chestnut, reduce the crown of a beech and prune back several other trees. The firm also chipped all the brush and took out the spruce stump. “Speed and efficiency are really important,” stresses Arne. “For one thing, customers don’t like disruption, so being able to wrap things up quickly goes well. But
“It was one of the first times we used the stump cutter,” recalls Arne. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow! It packs quite a punch!’ Especially for its size. In our line of work, access is often an issue. On one job, the only way in was through a narrow gap between the customer’s carport and the neighbor’s house. Not many stump cutters would have fitted.” Being petrol-driven, the SC362 is also light: a real advantage when turf damage needs to be minimized. “The spruce was standing in a little island at the edge of the lawn. Having a maneuverable, small-footprint machine meant that everything outside the island was virtually untouched. When we were done, you would barely know that there had ever been a tree there.” Another important field of activity for Mertens is dealing with storm damage. “We’ve been offering a 24-hour emergency response service for some years now,” says Arne.
“Trees that have come down on buildings, trees that are blocking roads, trees that are fouling overhead cables … you name it. You never know what to expect. You’ve got to be ready for anything.” Accordingly, Mertens has an impressive fleet of vehicles and machines. “We’ve invested a lot in the machinery park,” confirms Arne. “But we don’t have capital to burn. Every machine has to pay for itself by reducing the time and labor needed to get the job done. That’s why we love the Vermeer mini skid steers: we’ve got two, because they’re so versatile. We use them on all sorts of jobs, mainly with the grapples, but also with bucket attachments, for moving spoil, brush and logs, and they can do a lot more besides.” Arne and Tina are both sociable, outgoing people. And they run Baumpflege Mertens in their own image. “Communication is very important, both for marketing and
for networking within the industry,” says Tina. “We use Facebook, YouTube and Instagram,as well as the website, of course. We promote our services, we give advice on things like processionary moth infestations and we exchange information with other arborists. We like to have a bit of fun with some of the photos and videos, but in the end, it’s about profiling the business and promoting expertise.” Against that background, Arne really appreciates the support Mertens gets from Vermeer. “We have a strong relationship with the German Vermeer dealer. It’s a very customer-focused company, always ready to talk issues over, provide support with maintenance and training, discuss ways of improving productivity.” Mertens’ motto is ‘Made for this’. It certainly seems that Arne and Tina were made for the work they do. And Vermeer for them.

John Deere adds smooth Boom Control Technology for Tracked Feller Bunchers & Harvesters • John Deere announces the release of Smooth Boom Control for its M-Series Tracked Feller Bunchers and MH-Series Tracked Harvesters. • Developed in global collaboration between the John Deere Wheeled Cut-to-Length and Full-Tree Forestry teams, Smooth Boom Control ensures full and responsive hydraulic function actuation, improving overall machine reactiveness and controllability. • Smooth Boom Control is available as a standard feature on new tracked feller bunchers and harvesters or as an upgrade for existing M- and MH-Series machine owners. Further enhancing the machine operation in demanding forestry applications, John Deere adds its Smooth Boom Control (SBC) technology to its M-Series Tracked Feller Bunchers and MH-Series Tracked Harvesters. Developed in global collaboration between the John Deere Wheeled Cut-to-Length and Full-Tree Forestry teams, the SBC system instantaneously responds to operator input while smoothing out the acceleration and deceleration of hydraulic functions on the machine, improving overall control. “Machine response is important to efficient machine operation, especially when working in challenging conditions day in and day out,” said Jim O’Halloran, product marketing manager, John
Deere. “With SBC, we’re improving machine functionality, making operation easier on both the operator and machine. As a result, operators can control the machine movements more effectively, especially when reversing motions. SBC delivers a smoother experience for the operator and less wear and tear on the machine over time.” The SBC software further refines the motion of the boom, swing and travel functions using advanced signal control to keep the machine ready to go. This results in a significant improvement in overall joystick and foot pedal response, reducing the signal delay at the start and end of each operator command. “One operator told us during our evaluation, it made a really good machine even better,” said O’Halloran. The SBC software is now available as a standard feature on new tracked feller bunchers and harvesters or as an upgrade for existing M- and MH-Series machine owners.
