Quinta do Lago South MAKEOVER

In 2020, when many golf courses in the Algarve were operating within budget constraints, Quinta do Lago’s owner, Irishman Dennis O’Brien, took the opposite approach and invested 7 million euros in a complete overhaul of Quinta do Lago South. The clubhouse serving both North and South courses was also given a stylish makeover and a new fleet of electric buggies purchased.

“Obviously Covid 19 was not something we would have wished for but we decided to make the best of a bad situation,” says Golf Director, Brian Evans. “The pandemic gave us the opportunity to close the course for six months – something that for a popular course like Quinta do Lago South would have been unthinkable under normal circumstances.” Being 45 years old, the course was in need of renovation. When it was built, little thought was given to environmental concerns such as water preservation and limiting the use of pesticides. The recent renovation has addressed these issues.

The footprint of the fairways has been reduced with a lot of the grass being taken up and replaced with brown pine bark. This reduces water consumption and has the advantage of providing better definition of where the fairways start and finish. And as Brian points out, the dark bark makes it easier to find any balls that stray off line, which has the advantage of speeding up play.

Another environmentally friendly change was the reseeding of the fairways, green surrounds and tees

with a mix of Kikuyu and Bermuda grass, which is less thirsty than Fescue. Kikuyu is almost impossible to kill, so environmentally it’s best to learn to live with it. A barrier has been placed around all greens to prevent the encroachment of the Kikuyu into the finer Fescue grass.

Players will see that the course is a lot more open than it was. “We’ve taken out a lot of the scrub so that players can now see other holes and get a feeling of the scale of the course and how it sits in its magnificent surroundings”, says Brian.

The first change you are likely to notice when playing the course is that the lake on hole three is now more obvious to the left of the fairway. You’ll also see a new hedge behind the green on hole four.

Remodelação do Quinta do Lago Sul

Em 2020 enquanto muitos dos campos de golfe do Algarve trabalhavam com constrangimentos orçamentais, Dennis O’Brien, o irlandês dono da Quinta do Lago, optou por uma estratégia oposta, investindo um total de 7 milhões de euros na renovação total do Quinta do Lago Sul. O Clubhouse, que serve tanto o campo Norte como o Sul, sofreu igualmente uma elegante remodelação, tendo também agora uma nova frota de buggies elétricos.

“É óbvio que o Covid 19 não foi bem-vindo, mas decidimos tirar o melhor partido possível de uma situação negativa”, afirma Brian Evans, diretor de golfe. “A pandemia deu-nos a oportunidade de fechar o campo durante seis meses, algo que, para um campo tão popular como o Quinta do Lago Sul, teria sido impensável em circunstâncias normais.”

Tendo já 45 anos, o campo necessitava de facto de ser remodelado. Aquando da sua construção, as preocupações ambientais, como a poupança de água ou limitação do uso de pesticidas, eram praticamente inexistentes – questões agora abordadas com a remodelação.

A pegada ecológica dos fairways foi reduzida com a substituição de relva por casca de pinheiro, o que reduz o consumo de água, sendo igualmente vantajoso na definição dos limites do empreendimento. E como Brian salienta, a casca escura facilita a procura de bolas perdidas, o que acelera o ritmo de jogo.

Outra mudança amiga do ambiente foi a replantação dos fairways, das áreas circundante do green e tees com uma mistura de Kikuyu e relva das Bermudas que necessitam de menos água que a habitual Frescue. O Kikuyu é praticamente indestrutível sendo, do ponto de vista ambiental, preferível aprender a viver com ele. Foram colocadas barreiras em torno de todos os greens para impedir o avanço do Kikuyu nas áreas de relva fina (plantadas com Frescue).

Other obvious changes include the reshaping of hole eight to make it easier for players to keep their ball on the fairway with their tee shot. It’s now a much straighter and fairer hole.

Many players will be relieved to find that the ‘popular’ right hand bunker on the ninth hole, which used to catch many tee shots and hold up play, has been moved higher up to become more of a target to aim at.

The most dramatic visual improvement is to Quinta do Lago’s signature hole, the 16th. All the low growth behind and to the left of the green has been taken out, making the lake and lagoon far more obvious, with the green in the foreground stretching into the vista like an infinity pool. Os jogadores verão que o campo está bastante mais aberto do que antes. “Arrancámos imensos arbustos, o que faz com que os jogadores possam ver agora os outros buracos, tendo assim uma sensação de escala do campo e de como ele se enquadra no magnífico cenário que o rodeia”, afirma Brian.

A primeira mudança que provavelmente detetarão ao usarem o campo é o facto de o lago no buraco 3 se destacar agora mais à esquerda do fairways. Verão igualmente uma nova sebe por trás do green, no buraco 4.

Outras mudanças óbvias incluem a reconfiguração do buraco 8, que tornou mais fácil os jogadores manterem a bola no fairways com a tacada do tee, sendo agora um buraco bastante mais direito e justo.

Muitos jogadores ficarão aliviados ao ver que o “popular” bunker situado à direita no buraco 9 – que costumava apanhar muitas tacadas de tee, atrasando significativamente o jogo – foi recolocado mais acima, tendo-se tornado agora numa espécie de alvo.

O melhoramento visual mais dramático é sem dúvida o que foi feito no buraco 16, o mais emblemático da Quinta do Lago. A elevação suave existente atrás e à esquerda do green foi completamente eliminada, tornando o lago e a lagoa bastante mais óbvios, com o green a expandir-se assim em pano de fundo, qual piscina de plano infinito.

They say a bad day of golf beats a good day at the office. However, if you’re competing in an important golf competition and you’re not playing well, that isn’t necessarily true. But ask any golfer who takes part in the organised competitions at Four Seasons Fairways and they’ll tell you they’re always great fun, even when the golf is not up to scratch.

The competitions are for all standards of golfer and are a chance to make new friends and meet up with old ones. There are good prizes to be won and lots of laughs to be had. Who wants the hassle of finding partners and booking tee times when you’re on holiday?

Besides the weekly competitions, Four Seasons Fairways organises two big golfing events. At the end of the year there’s The Masters, when some players courageously demonstrate their apparel creativity, and combined with drinks at the halfway house, it could only be a jolly affair. Then at the end of January there’s Amateur Week, a must for keen golfers who come from all over Europe to compete, relax and have fun. Consta que um mau dia de golfe supera um bom dia de trabalho. No final do ano há o “Masters”, no qual alguns golfistas exibem de forma criativa as suas indumentárias e que, em conjunto com as bebidas a meio do percurso, se revela sempre uma ocasião festiva. Depois, em janeiro, realiza-se a “Semana Amadora”, um evento indispensável para entusiastas do golfe que afluem ao empreendimento de todos os cantos da Europa para competirem, descansarem e se divertirem.
