Jersey Mike’s Subs franchise owner/operator Clarissa Palomana celebrates the restaurant’s grand opening at 2561 E. Chapman Ave., with a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 17 with Fullerton Mayor Doug Chaffee, Fullerton Chamber of Commerce staff and members, and supporters.
A Vision for the Chamber’s 120th Year and Beyond Presiding over his first Fullerton Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors’ meeting as Chair, Chris Reese announced plans for dynamic changes that will allow the Chamber to better serve its members as well as the larger North Orange County business community. One of the more immediate items in his strategic five-year plan was the unveiling of the Chamber’s 120th anniversary logo, which will help launch a year-long celebration of the Chamber’s rich history in the region. In addition to approving a budget for 2014-15, Reese and the board addressed programmatic changes the Chamber is undergoing, including enhanced services for its members, the implementation of its recently launched tiered-membership program, and ways to serve the business community at large. The July 17 Board of Directors meeting was also an opportunity to introduce the board’s newest members. Helen Eligio, a retail branch manager for Farmers & Merchants Bank, began her career at the company 28 years ago as a
teller. Since then, as a representative of the bank, she has served the Fullerton community. She is a longtime Fullerton Chamber supporter and this year she is increasing her involvement by serving on its 2014-15 Board of Directors. In evidence of her passion for the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce, Tina Maraj was recently named the Chamber’s 2014 Ambassador of the Year. Following on the heels of this accomplishment, this year she joins the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Maraj, who attended Fullerton schools Troy High School, Fullerton College, and Cal State Fullerton, has operated her residential real estate business in Fullerton for 25 years and has been affiliated with RE/MAX of North Orange County for 18 years. Michael Williams is not only a Fullerton native and a fourthgeneration insurance broker with Williams Co. Insurance Brokers, a family-owned and operated Fullerton firm since 1941, but he is also a second-generation member of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. The Williams are long-time supporters of the Fullerton Chamber Vision ...continued on page 2 FullertonChamber.com

Williams was a member of the Chamber’s Leadership Fullerton Program and is currently organizing a new approach for younger members to participate in Rotary, through a program known as RYPEN (Rotary Young Professional Executive Network). Along with Board officers Reese, Mary Burbank, Andrew Carroll, Jim Pugliese, and Joyce Capelle, returning board members are Jeannette Bartus, Pat Buttress, Sueling Chen, Christopher DeCaro, Emily France, Zina B. Gleason, Ted Kim, Richard Kohli, Annette Magdaleno, Ryan Olsen, Bert Reitz, Rhonda Shader, and Beverly Thomson. Reese emphasized the role the Board of Directors plays in the success of the Chamber. “Today we will have a conversation about what the Chamber will be, not just next year, but in the next 5, 10, 20, and 120 years,” Reese asserted during the board meeting. “We have a fiduciary responsibility to the Chamber, the staff, and its members, to provide a vision, structure, and direction, so that the Chamber can offer the greatest amount of value to the business community.”

In addition to those bills, AB 674, by Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva, has been signed by Governor Jerry Brown. AB 674 updates the definition of microenterprise and microenterprise development organizations to more accurately reflect industry practices and offer additional access to government resources and programs. Existing law defines “microenterprise” as a sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation with fewer than five employees, including the owner, and generally lacking access to conventional loans, equity, or other banking services. There are approximately 3.2 million microenterprises in the State of California. These firms create jobs, generate taxes, and revitalize communities. AB 674 updates the existing definition by specifying that the owner of a microenterprise may be employed by another firm, adds a limited liability company to the list of legal structures under which a microenterprise may be organized, and modifies the requirement that a microenterprise generally lacks access to capital by stating that the microenterprise lacks “sufficient” access to capital, among other things.

Chamber Member Spotlight In just under two years of business, ComicBook Hideout, located at 215 West Commonwealth Ave. in downtown Fullerton, has been deemed “Orange County’s Best Comic Shop” by OC Weekly Best of 2013 and is currently ranked among the top three contenders for the OC Register’s Best of 2014, with the winner to be revealed in September. From selling all of your comic book favorites, to hosting fun events like Wednesday Night Game night, Friday Night Magic the Gathering tournaments, monthly art gallery events, or just having fun things to do from playing in the Arcade to attending live comedy or music shows, the Hideout has a little bit of something for everyone. ComicBook Hideout has contributed to the Fullerton community and cities throughout Orange County. Shop owner, Glynnes Pruett, has designed a comic book creation program for adolescents, C.O.M.I.C.S. (Captivating Our Minor’s Imaginations, Creating Solutions), focused on engaging students in introspective reflection, which helps them identify with a more positive and heroic self image. By teaching core concepts of the heroic and villainous archetypes, the hero’s journey and its basic story structure, students can have a better understanding of the rewards and consequences of their actions and decisions. Using a comic book medium to express their thoughts and feelings, students can captivate their imaginations in a fun, fresh form. The program is currently being implemented at the Orange County Juvenile Correction Facility, has been offered as a workshop at the Canyon Hills Public Library, and will soon be available through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fullerton’s Teen Center as a part of their fall programming and at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center as an eight-week course. To be considered for the Chamber Member Spotlight, contact the Chamber at (714) 871-3100.
