BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Jajce is called an open-air museum for numerous reasons. In the fifteenth century, the Kotromanić royal family made this place, rich in history, one of their capital cities, and nowadays it is home to more than 22 national monuments. The remarkable Pliva Waterfall is in the city centre. A few kilometers away from it, the Big and Small Pliva Lakes, give joy to amateur athletes as the lakes' calm waters are ideal for kayaking and canoeing. During the Middle Ages, watermills were built between the two lakes, and the Austro-Hungarians used them for the Monarchy’s official postcard theme.

Ljetna atrakcija JajcA ČETVRTI PO REDU MEĐUNARODNI SKOKOVI S VODOPADA U JAJCU ODRŽAT ĆE SE 5. AUGUSTA

Jajce's Summer Attraction THE FOURTH INTERNATIONAL HIGH DIVING COMPETITION FROM THE PLIVA WATERFALL IN JAJCE WILL BE HELD ON 5TH AUGUST Mnogo je razloga zašto se Jajce naziva muzejem pod vedrim nebom.

Jumping off the amazing Waterfall The incredible natural phenomenon in Jajce—a waterfall at the very heart of it—attracts a large number of tourists and divers from all over the world each summer. The reason lies in the sports and tourist event called the International High Diving Competition from the Pliva Waterfall in Jajce, and Public Company “Agency for Historic, Cultural and Natural Heritage and Tourist Potential Development of Jajce” organizes it diligently and successfully. The fourth International High Diving Competition in a row will be held on 5th August at the location of the waterfall which dates back to a distant past, as far back as 50.000 years ago, representing a passage between two rivers: the Pliva and Vrbas Rivers. Divers in top physical form will perform avant-garde acrobatics as they jump into water from a high platform which is 20 meters above the water. Once again, it will be interesting to attend this event which combines the strength, courage and creativity of men with the magnificent nature.

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

ABDULAH SKAKA

Najmlađi gradonačelnik

SARAJEVA

16

K

Najveći potencijali u njegovom brendiranju, komercijalizaciji, njegova su bogata kulturno-historijska baština, jedinstvo različitih religija i kultura, krasne prirodne atrakcije, otvoreni i gostoljubivi ljudi s prepoznatljivim sarajevskim humorom, olimpijada, brojni festivali kulture i sporta, njegova mladost i sve veća i raznovrsnija turistička ponuda.

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

vode duhovnom i materijalnom napretku.

Gondole će biti u bojama olimpijskih krugova oslikavajući jedinstvo i multietničnost Sarajeva. Realizacijom ovog projekta dobivamo važan turistički potencijal i sadržaj više kako za građane tako i za turiste i goste glavnog grada BiH. S druge strane, ponovo će oživjeti nekada popularno sarajevsko izletište Trebević, oaza mira i zelenila nadomak velikog grada i vazdušna banja s najvećom koncentracijom kisika na ovom području.

va. U tome je, možda, tajna njegovog opstanka.

Imate li omiljenu poslovicu koja igra važnu ulogu u Vašem životu?

Koja su Vaša omiljena mjesta u gradu?

– Ko hoće nađe milion načina, a ko neće – milion izgovora.

Oženjeni ste i imate dvoje djece.

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

ABDULAH SKAKA

SARAJEVO’S

Youngest Mayor

BRANDING OF SARAJEVO What do you see as the greatest challenge involved in being a mayor? – The very fact that I’m the youngest mayor of Sarajevo, a city of vast possibilities, is a great challenge in itself. The greatest potential in turning it into a brand and commercializing it lies in the rich cultural and historic heritage the city has to offer, the unique mixture of different religions and culture, the amazing natural attractions, the open and hospitable people of Sarajevo and their famed sense of humor, the Olympic Games, the city’s various cultural festivals and sport events, the young people and a growing number of various tourist offers. Our Sarajevo is becoming a successful city and this shows everyone that Bosnia and Herzegovina is also a part of Europe and the world, as well as a part of the integrations leading to spiritual and material progress. I’d also like to say that I’m determined to solve the existing problems by raising the level of quality of life in Sarajevo. During your mandate, what will be your top priorities?

ABDULAH SKAKA WAS ELECTED TO LEAD THE CAPITAL OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, WHICH MARKED THE BEGINNING OF THE MOST EXCITING PERIOD OF HIS LIFE Interviewed by: Elma ZEĆO, Photos: Irfan REDŽOVIĆ

T

hroughout its 555-year long history, Sarajevo was governed by great men. That is why the city’s 38th mayor, Abdulah Skaka, feels extremely honored and privileged to be the mayor of the city he was born in, the city his family lives in and the city he wants to live in, but he is also aware of the great responsibility that comes with the position entrusted with him. 20

“This is me stepping forward to enter the most exciting period of my life. I’m doing my best to be the mayor for all the citizens of Sarajevo, but also to represent our city on the international scene the right way, through city diplomacy above all, which resulted in Sarajevo becoming a twin city to 28 other cities and member of quite a few important international organizations and institutions.”

– The current city administration’s program is based on the vision for Sarajevo in 2020 when our mandate ends. According to that vision, Sarajevo will be the capital city of the European Union’s future member state, its economy will be focused

Irresistible City “Foreigners, and even ambassadors leaving the city at the end of their mission, often tell me that they feel at home in Sarajevo. Our capital is still a place where people find the time for themselves, the time to enjoy themselves, and to hang around with family, friends and neighbors.”

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

on tourism and the rendering of services, it’ll strive to be Bosnia and Herzegovina’s social, economic, educational, political and communication center and will be an indispensible factor in this part of Europe. There are several priorities and, for now, I can reveal only a few of them. Principally, we’ll continue working on projects that started to be implemented in the past, such as the construction of the cable car, completion of the construction of bicycle lanes, as well as the implementation of the youth winter Olympic games: the 2019 EYOF. International cooperation with cities across Europe but also across the world, as well as in the Balkans, is also our priority. We’ll show this at a conference scheduled for August this year. We mustn’t leave out the support we’ll provide to culture, student scholarships, the activities we’ll coordinate with other administrative levels, cooperation regarding different projects, and we’ll also start solving problems related to city infrastructure, the traffic, energy, water and waste water infrastructure. At what implementation stage is the Trebević Cable Car (Trebevićka žičara) now? – Apart from being an infrastructural project, the Trebević Cable Car is also a symbol of devastation of a capital which has undergone the longest siege in the history of warfare, but also a symbol of its indestructibility. All preparatory work for the construction of the new Trebević Cable Car is going according to plan. We’ll soon start building the cable car base and end station, and pouring concrete footings for the columns. Based on an international tender procedure, the contract was awarded to Leitner, an Italian company which is currently producing the equipment for the cable car facility. When conditions are met, the facility will be delivered and installed. The cable car will 22

comprise 33 cabins—gondola cars offering panoramic views, each seating 10 passengers, carrying 1,200 passengers per hour in total. Gondola cars will be in the five colors of the Olympic rings colors representing Sarajevo’s multiethnic spirit and unity. When we implement this project, we’ll get an important tourist potential and another location for both the citizens who live in and tourists who come to visit the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the other hand, the once popular day trip location—Trebević—an oasis of peace and green vegetation close to the big city and an open air spa with the highest oxygen concentration in the area, will be brimming with life again.

VIEW FROM A VIEWING POINT If you were to plan a tour of Sarajevo for your guests, how would it look like? – What to choose and how when this city has so much beauty to offer? Passing through the living oriental museum—Baščaršija, and then the city center, you can hear the murmur of people speaking various languages, because Sarajevo has become a top tourist destination in the Balkans. Sarajevo is one of the rare cities in the world where you can come across places of worship of the world’s major religions—Islam, Christianity and Judaism—in a slow ten-minute walk. The City Hall (Vijećnica), a unique architectural pearl, has become a real tourist attraction. Sarajevo is also a city hosting several festivals among which the Sarajevo Film Festival has grown into the largest regional film festival and a cultural event on the world’s film festival list one cannot avoid. Tourists are also drawn by the buildings constructed during the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empire, such as bridges, museums, galleries,

theaters, cafés and restaurants, but numerous day-trip places too: Vrelo Bosne (the Spring of Bosnia), Barice, Čavljak, and Bijambare, as well as the surrounding Olympic mountains: Bjelašnica, Jahorina and Igman. They say, “Whoever drinks water at Baščaršija is destined to return to Sarajevo”. And you can’t live without water. We can’t live without Sarajevo. Perhaps that’s the secret behind its survival. What are you favorite places in Sarajevo? – Some claim that all the cities around the world are best viewed from a high viewing point offering panoramic views. That’s why I frequently decide to invite mayors and other guests to start to get to know Sarajevo from and take a short walk with me around one of the most popular viewing points among Sarajevans—Zmajevac. The White Fortress (Bijela tabija), a fortified medieval fortress, and the Yellow Fortress (Žuta tabija), which is very dear to me, also offer a fas-

Construction of Bicycle Lanes is about to be resumed “Following the European standards, three years ago the City of Sarajevo initiated the construction of bicycle lanes stretching from Nedžarići to Stup, which includes the possibility to extend them to reach the Čobanija Bridge, and then finally to end at Bentbaša. The total length of bicycle lanes is 15.4 kilometers. Having constructed 4.5 kilometers of bicycle lanes in the Novi Grad Municipality, the construction of the stretch passing through the Novo Sarajevo Municipality is about to be resumed, whereas the final project phase will cover parts of the Centar Municipality.”

cinating view of the city. It’s during Ramadan that I feel particularly good around that place as I witness a hundred-year long tradition of the Bosnian Muslims—the breaking of fast as a cannon goes off to mark it.

PAYING HOMAGE TO ISA−BEG ISHAKOVIĆ

the earliest recorded source for exploring the development of Sarajevo, and 1962, the year of its issuance, is the date which marks the city’s founding year. His endowments “cannot be sold or given away, or become somebody’s property by way of full ownership transfer until God remains as the only master of Earth and of everything on Earth; He is the

best heir.” I intend to bring back to life certain activities starting from next year which would pay homage to Isa-beg Ishaković in a dignified manner. I’d also like to believe that time would come when we’d rebuild his tekke in the authentic style and reconnect with our roots. Such a building would make the local tourist offer better.

What profession did you dream of pursuing when you were a boy? – Like other boys, I went through a phase when I wanted to become a doctor, a pilot or an architect. You are married and have two kids. Are you a tough father and what values do you want to teach your kids? – I faced new life challenges, new experiences, when I got kids. Even though they’re the most wonderful experiences, they’re also, at the same time, full of dread. Both my daughter and my son are small kids, but in spite of it, I realize that they know, see and feel quite a lot. I want to raise them well, help them become good, honorable and diligent people. I’m not tough on them; I try to be fair. How do you relieve stress? – Sometimes by working in quiet places, but most of the time by spending time with my family. Also, a good night sleep helps me to recharge my batteries. Do you have a favorite old saying which plays an important role in your life? – If there’s a will, there’s a way. If there’s no will, there are a million excuses. If you could pick a historical figure of Sarajevo to have dinner with, who would it be? – That would definitely be the founder of the urban Sarajevo, Isa-beg Ishaković, whose waqf represents

Sports and New Friendships Festival “In February 2019, Sarajevo and East Sarajevo will host the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF), and welcome about 1500 male and female athletes from over 40 European countries. BiH Presidency has confirmed that it’s going to be the general sponsor of the event, and the European Olympic Committees have expressed satisfaction with the financial guarantees the BiH authorities have provided thus far. However, this is not just a sport competition; this is an opportunity for a lot of business people, tourists and people who love winter sports alike to have meetings and spend time together.” 23

NJ. E., AMBASADOR REPUBLIKE SLOVENIJE, IZTOK GRMEK

Budite ponosni

zemlju PRIJE 26 GODINA IZTOK GRMEK POSTAO JE DIPLOMATA. U IME SVOJE ZEMLJE BORAVIO JE U RAZLIČITIM DIPLOMATSKIM MISIJAMA U MAĐARSKOJ, BUGARSKOJ, UKRAJINI, MOLDAVIJI, ŠVICARSKOJ, BELGIJI, DOK JE PRIJE SKORO ČETIRI GODINE POSTAO AMBASADOR SLOVENIJE U BIH Razgovarala: Elma ZEĆO, Fotografije: Irfan REDŽOVIĆ

A

PRIJATELJSKE ZEMLJE S kakvim ambicijama ste započeli svoj posao u BiH?

Lijepa uspomena bit će i otvorenje novih prostorija Ambasade Slovenije u BiH, u Maglajskoj 4 u Sarajevu.

A šta biste savjetovali mladim ljudima?

Mi, Slovenci, volimo snijeg, volimo more. Kada dođu hladni dani, moja cijela porodica praktikuje klasične zimske sportove, posebno skijanje i klizanje.

– Glavni, dinamičan i raznolik. I historijski i tradicionalno glavni je i najveći grad u BiH. Nudi mnoštvo aktivnosti na polju kulture, sporta, diplomatije – zbog prisustva velike Međunarodne zajednice. Slovenci vole Sarajevo zbog mješavine kultura, religija, arhitekture i šarolikog načina življenja.

THE AMBASSADOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF SLOVENIA, IZTOK GRMEK

ON BEHALF OF HIS COUNTRY, HE WENT ON A DIPLOMATIC MISSION TO HUNGARY, BULGARIA, UKRAINE, MOLDAVIA, SWITZERLAND AND BELGIUM, AND NEARLY FOUR YEARS AGO HE BECAME SLOVENIA’S AMBASSADOR TO BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA. Interviewed by: Elma ZEĆO, Photographer: Irfan REDŽOVIĆ 29

TEMA BROJA / COVER STORY The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia is situated in a modern building in the center of Sarajevo. Bicycles are parked in front of it and this shows that Slovenians are environment-friendly Europeans. As you sit on a wellness green sofa in a light and airy waiting room, you cannot help but get the impression that the environment is an extremely important factor in Slovenian society. This impression gets even stronger when Ambassador Iztok Grmek tells you that over 50% of Slovenians, which equates to more than a million people, go hiking! The Ambassador is a very cordial man, and he is communicative, helpful and considerate when he speaks.

FRIENDLY COUNTRIES What were your ambitions when you started to work in Bosnia and Herzegovina? – Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are linked by history and tradition, and I endeavored to promote good bilateral cooperation at all levels including political, economic and cultural cooperation. I’d particularly like to emphasize the links between the people from BiH living in Slovenia, and the people from the Republic of Slovenia living in BiH. Apart from promoting bilateral cooperation, a diplomat also gets involved in resolving issues which put a strain on the relations between the two countries. That’s why I was delighted that both Karl Erjavc, Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, on the occasion of his visit to BiH last October, and Dr Miroslav Cerar, President of the Republic of Slovenia, who visited BiH in April this year, stated that there were no major open issues between our two countries. Is there a special moment in your mandate that you’d like to reflect on? – I will always cherish the time during the catastrophic flooding 30

that took place in BiH, back in 2014, when the Republic of Slovenia provided assistance to BiH. During that time, we, the people from the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia, partook in the logistics segment of the humanitarian assistance coming into the country from a large number of organizations from the Republic of Slovenia: from military and police force assistance when helicopters were immediately dispatched to help, to the assistance of the Civil Protection Services of the Republic of Slovenia, which provided aid in terms of boats and civil protection units. After the floods, the Republic of Slovenia, together with France, also organized a donors conference within the EU. Another wonderful memory will be the opening of the new premises of the Embassy of Slovenia to BiH at 4 Maglajska Street in Sarajevo. The opening ceremony took place on October 10th 2016. It was a joint project and investment of the Republic of Slovenia and a company from BiH which constructed the

building to meet all the requirements that the Embassy needs to function successfully. So far, you’ve held positions on behalf of your country related primarily to economy, which is your field of expertise. Is there a recipe to help enhance economic development in the Balkans? – Ever since I began to work in the Slovenian diplomatic service in 1991, economic diplomacy has somehow been my favorite area of economy and the one I was most familiar with. The main problem in our common region—Southeast Europe—is the fact that our global competitiveness is declining and we are becoming less recognizable globally. Stability and economic attractiveness of the Balkans are in essence simple recipes for prosperity across the region. Instead of bringing to mind wonderful countries with numerous resources and talented, educated people, the term “the Balkans” connotes instability, complexity and a lack of competitiveness way too often.

In your opinion, what could BiH exploit in this regard?

in BiH: from Neum to Mostar and Banja Luka to Bihać and other amazing places across the country.

– BiH has an excellent geostrategic position on the route from the Mediterranean Sea to Central and Eastern Europe. Human potential is crucial for any country. There are so many talented and highly educated people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and this potential needs to be put to use. This also includes Bosnians and Herzegovinians whose potential is used in the diaspora.

If you needed to describe Sarajevo in three words, what words would you use? – The capital city, dynamic and diverse. Both historically and traditionally, Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It provides for numerous activities in the field of culture, sport, diplomacy—because of the heavy presence of the International Community in BiH. Slovenians love Sarajevo because of its cultural and religious mix, its architecture and its diverse lifestyles.

What advice would you give to the young people? – I’d advise the young people to be proud of their beautiful country, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to have faith in their own abilities and knowledge. Education that they can receive both in BiH and in the European Union is especially important.

SLOVENIAN LIFESTYLE IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA Tell us, what’s your perception of BiH? – My perception of BiH has been a process spanning several years. We began to get to know each other a long time ago—during the time when we were part of a common country. That’s why BiH made up an important part of my life in Yugoslavia, but it also made up an important part of my life later on, during the tragic time of war, up until 2013 when I was given an opportunity to live in lovely Sarajevo for four years. Are there any specific places that you like to visit? – My family, I may say so, lives a Slovenian lifestyle in BiH. We use our free time to the fullest. Especially in wintertime, we enjoy everything the three Olympic Mountains surrounding Sarajevo have to offer, and in summertime, we explore all the wonderful sights

It is summer travel season. Where do you like to set out on vacation? Could you describe your life in Sarajevo for us? – There are a few cities that I love very much, but I’d point out two of them: Ljubljana, the city I’ve lived in since I was one, and Sarajevo. Life in these two cities happens in a similar way. During our stay here, we make an effort to become familiar with and experience all the advantages this city and country can offer. On weekends, for example, we head out on field trips to places around Sarajevo, but we also think that Kreševo is a very nice little town, then Fojnica, and Kraljeva Sutjeska is certainly a must-see. We, the Slovenians, love snow and we love the sea. When the cold winter days come, my entire family takes part in classic winter sports, particularly skiing and skating. In spring, we usually go in a different direction—to the south, to Herzegovina and Southern Dalmatia.

– In four years of living in BiH, we spent our vacations on the mountains surrounding Sarajevo, in Herzegovina and Dalmatia, but in Slovenia too. Which of the countries that you have visited do you find particularly impressive in terms of culture? – I find that the BiH culture is very special. I was born in a country which was common to us. Slovenians have always admired the Bosnian and Herzegovinian culture and diversity. That’s why many Slovenians are so eager to come and visit BiH. Finally, what country do you wish to go to on your next diplomatic mission? – We try not to stay in a country for too long, and after our mandate expires we always try to combine the location of our new foreign service position with Slovenia. That’s why Ljubljana will be the next destination of my diplomatic mission. 31

BOSNABROJA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA TEMA / COVER STORY

Plečnikova Ljubljana GODINE 2017. SLOVENIJA SLAVI PLEČNIKOVU GODINU, ČIME SE OBILJEŽAVA 145. GODIŠNJICA ROĐENJA I 60. GODIŠNJICA SMRTI ARHITEKTE JOŽE PLEČNIKA. ALI OVO PRIZNAVANJE I VREDNOVANJE NJEGOVIH KREACIJA NIJE OGRANIČENO SAMO NA TRENUTAK U VREMENU I PROSTORU, JER NJEGOV RAD DOTIČE SAMU UNIVERZALNOST I BEZVREMENOST KOJE SU PREPOZNATLJIVE SVIM PAŽLJIVIM PROMATRAČIMA.

S

lovenski arhitekta Jože Plečnik (1872.–1957.) ostavio je značajna obilježja u tri evropska glavna grada: Beču i Pragu, a posebno u rodnoj Ljubljani.

Vrt svih svetih, danas dio

he Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik (1872–1957) left a significant mark on three European capital cities: Vienna and Prague, and especially his native city of Ljubljana. He worked there from 1921 until his death and largely realised his vision of a city transformed into the national capital based on Classical models. Characterized by the remains of the Roman period and particularly by Baroque style architecture, Ljubljana received its first modern urban design, a work of Plečnik’s contemporary Maks Fabiani, after the earthquake in 1895.

Ljubljanica bridges are some of his most important interventions with the city. The land axis leading from his house in Trnovo to the Congress Square and the Zvezda Park in the city center represents the city’s cultural avenue. The water axis comprises the arrangement of the Ljubljanica basin, starting with the Trnovski pristan embankment, continuing with the Ljubljanica embankments in the city center, the Cobblers Bridge, the Triple Bridge and the main market, and ending in the sluice gates. With the reconstruction of the embankments and bridges, and with the placing of trees and other vegetation, which he regarded as an important architectural tool, Plečnik lent the city on the Ljubljanica a Mediterranean character. The third axis connected the Jakopič Promenade in the Tivoli Park and the Ljubljana castle on the Castle Hill. The Garden of All Saints, a part of today’s Žale Cemetery, represents a special place, Plečnik’s expression of extreme sensitivity and respect for the citizens of Ljubljana. He transformed the city to such an extent that today citizens see it as “Plečnik’s Ljubljana”, a unique phenomenon of urban planning and a 20th century total work of art.

From being a sleepy provincial town it transformed into a modern Art-Noveau-style capital displaying new aesthetic ideals. It took Plečnik nearly three decades to put his vision of Ljubljana into reality. Faced with an already built up space, he redesigned and upgraded it, and between 1921 and 1957 he filled its city grid with a number of impressive buildings.

Kada stignu do otoka,

THIS ALPINE LAKE WITH THE ONLY ISLAND IN SLOVENIA HAS BEEN A WORLD-RENOWNED PARADISE FOR CENTURIES, IMPRESSING VISITORS WITH ITS NATURAL BEAUTY, WEALTH OF LEGEND, AND SPECIAL POWERS TO RESTORE WELL-BEING

BEAUTIFUL PLACE Bled is one of the most recognisable iconic places in Slovenia. In the 19th century, it was visited by hydropathy enthusiasts following the methods of the Swiss physician Arnold Rikli. At the beginning of the 20th century, Lake Bled was considered to be the most beautiful health resort in Austria-Hungary. After World War II, this was the location of one of the most important state protocol residences. Villa Bled has retained this function to the present day.

MAKE YOUR WISHES COME TRUE Traditional wooden boats – pletnas – have been taking visitors to the island in the middle of the lake for centuries. These boats are ope-

to the island by an inconsolable widow in remembrance of her late husband, ended up sinking to the bottom of the lake in a storm. So, Bled really has a pair of legendary bells: the one in the church and the one on the bottom of the lake. The legend about the sunken bell is brought to life every year by a special Christmas event.

VIEWS AND EXPERIENCES The most beautiful view of the lake, its island, and the surrounding peaks is from the castle towering over the lake on a cliff. Due to its beauty, it is considered to be one of the loveliest wedding venues in Europe, and it has also been the location of important diplomatic and state protocol meetings. In the summer months, you can meet a castle lord or experience an archery tournament.

rated by standing rowers known as pletnars. After landing, guests climb 99 stone steps to reach the Assumption of Mary Church. On this island, which is the subject of legendary tales, listen to the church bell and ring it yourself. Legend has it that this will make your wishes come true. As you return to the lake shore, view the island on the lake from the castle or from the walking and horse-carriage trails that lead you around the lake. Take a ride with Bled coachmen, known as fijakers!

THE STORY OF THE BLED BELL The church bell, made in the early 16th century, is said to have come from the pope himself. The story goes that he gave it to the church after the original bell, sent 39

Umjetnost i kultura U SLOVENIJI KULTURA IMA POSEBAN HISTORIJSKI I DRUŠTVENI ZNAČAJ

Z

I

t was primarily thanks to their culture and common language – the Slovenian – that the Slovenians were able to forge themselves and survive as a nation. To Slovenians, the language and culture have for centuries represented a substitute for the lack of their own state and political institutions. Slovenia is one of the rare countries, if not actually the only country in the world, where a day of culture is a national holiday. In Slovenia, literature is still the most prestigious and revered form

A special place in the Slovenian literature is occupied by Primož Trubar, who published the first book in the Slovenian language, and the poet France Prešeren, whose poem Zdravljica (A Toast) is the Slovenian anthem. In 2010, Ljubljana was the world book capital as selected by the UNESCO. And in 2012, Maribor was the European Capital of Culture.

Date: 17.08.2017 - 14.09.2017. Place: Piran, Koper The Tartini Festival is an international festival of chamber music dedicated to the memory of the life and spirit of Giuseppe Tartini. Slovenia has a very well-spread network of cultural institutions, organizations and associations, comparable to the culturally most developed European countries. The offer of cultural events in Slovenia is exceptionally diverse, pleasing even the most demanding visitors. Particularly in the summer, a series of world-class festivals are held in Slovenia, featuring appearances of world-renowned artists. 53

Potica POTICA ZAUZIMA PRVO MJESTO MEĐU TRADICIONALNIM PRAZNIČNIM KOLAČIMA U SLOVENIJI

POTICA TAKES FIRST PLACE AMONG THE TRADITIONAL FESTIVE PASTRIES IN SLOVENIA

It's a rolled pastry made of leavened dough filled with any of a great variety of fillings. Slovenian housewives also love baking poticas at non-festive times to pamper their loved ones. It’s not easy to make one. You need just enough filling and just enough dough. More than 80 various types of fillings are known.

The most characteristic Slovenian poticas are made with walnut, hazelnut, tarragon, poppy seed, cottage cheese and other fillings. Potica is a festive pastry and can be baked in two ways: in the oven or directly on the hearth.

TRADICIONALNI SLOVENSKI RECEPT ZA POTICU OD ORAHA:

TRADITIONAL SLOVENIAN RECIPE FOR WALNUT POTICA:

SASTOJCI

INGREDIENTS

ZA DIZANO TIJESTO: 1 kg brašna 30 g svježeg kvasca 3-4 žumanjka 300 ml mlake vode 120 g maslaca 1 kašičica soli 2 kašike šećera masnoća za podmazivanje pleha

LEAVENED DOUGH: 1 kg flour 30 g fresh yeast 3-4 egg yolks 300 ml of lukewarm milk 120 g butter 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons sugar lard for greasing a baking dish

ZA PUNJENJE: 600-700 g oraha 200 g meda 50 g šećera 100-200 ml mlijeka 1 jaje cimet malo ruma ili domaće rakije

FILLING: 600-700 g walnuts 200 g honey 50 g sugar 100-200 ml milk 1 egg cinnamon a dash of rum or homemade brandy

Namotajte čvrsto i stavite ga u podmazani kalup. Prijatno!

PREPARATION The dough must be prepared in a warm room. Mix the flour with a teaspoon of salt and mix the yeast with a teaspoon of sugar and two tablespoons of flour and 50 ml of lukewarm water or milk. Leave in a warm place to rise. Make a hole in the middle of the flour; add whisked eggs, yeast, melted butter and sugar into the hole. Add the lukewarm milk while stirring. Beat the dough for 15 minutes or until bubbles appear and the dough separates from the bowl. Sprinkle some flour on the beaten dough; cover the dough with a cotton cloth and leave in a warm place to rise. To prepare the filling, crush or grind the walnuts and pour some hot sweetened milk over them. Heat up the honey until it liquefies. Add the honey and cinnamon to the walnuts. Leave the filling to cool off. Add one or two eggs to the filling and mix thoroughly. Roll out the dough until it is ½ cm thick and spread the warm filling over it. Roll tightly and put it in a greased mould. Leave the potica to rise slowly. It will also rise during baking. Before baking, cover the potica with a whisked egg. Bake for an hour; when finished, leave it in the mould for 15 minutes to cool off. Sprinkle the potica with powdered sugar if desired.Bon appétit! 57

Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Početak SFF-a Priča o nastanku Sarajevo Film Festivala seže u vrijeme četverogodišnje opsade Sarajeva. Njenim koncem 1995.

The Start of SFF The story of Sarajevo Film Festival inception goes back to the period of 4-year siege of Sarajevo. At the end of the siege in late 1995., Obala Art Centre started the festival to contribute to the making of better future – rehabilitation of civil society and maintainance of cosmopolitan spirit of BiH's capital city. Although it may be hard to believe, the first festival commenced in the besieged city on 27 October 1995., during which, according to available information, 37 films from 15 countries were shown in Bosanski kulturni centar (Bosnian Culture Centre). Around 15.000 people showed their appreciation for the festival, and all the shows were completely sold out.

OPREDIJELJENA ZA RAD I STALNO USAVRŠAVANJE, TUMAČILA JE POTPUNO RAZLIČITE ULOGE OTKRIVAJUĆI SVOJE SKLONOSTI I POKAZUJUĆI KOLIKO MOŽE DATI KAO GLUMICA, DANAS ČLANICA ANSAMBLA KAMERNOG TEATRA 55, GDJE JE SVOJEVREMENO KAO TINEJDŽERKA GLEDAJUĆI PREDSTAVU POŽELJELA DA KARIJERU GRADI NA DASKAMA KOJE ŽIVOT ZNAČE Razgovarala: Elma ZEĆO Foto: Irfan Redžović “Pojavi se i uradi najbolje što možeš”, to je svjetonazor kojeg glumica Aida Bukva živi svakodnevno.

KOMPLETNA GLUMAČKA LIČNOST U Kamernom teatru 55, čijem ansamblu pripadate, igrate u dvije predstave aktuelnog repertoara – romantičnoj komediji i crnoj komediji.

mentalnu higijenu, vraćaju me skromnosti, poniznosti i ljubavi prema čovjeku.

– I to svojim načinom života dokazujem. Kako izgleda Vaš bijeg u zonu komfora?

AIDA BUKVA

Playful Heart of an

Actor

“Show up and do the best that you can”, that’s the worldview that actress Aida Bukva lives on a daily basis. In work, she says, she is responsible to herself and to everyone else, because only a sense of responsibility can produce a sense of security from which the joy of an acting game springs. “A man wants to do what brings him joy, that is always the point. That is the only way you can be imaginative, brilliant at moments, good to yourself and others”, says our interviewee, who so far has had the pleasure of working with directors such as Aleš Kurt, Kenan Kulenović, Gradimir Gojer and Dino Mustafić.

NEW PART, NEW JOURNEY Ever since you have appeared on the acting scene of BH, you are essentially constantly active. We’ve seen you in projects of different formats. What helped you the most to mature as an actress?

DEVOTED TO WORK AND CONTINUOUS TRAINING, SHE INTERPRETED COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ROLES, REVEALING HER PREFERENCES AND SHOWING HOW MUCH SHE CAN GIVE AS AN ACTRESS, NOW A MEMBER OF THE CHAMBER THEATRE 55 (KAMERNI TEATAR 55) ENSEMBLE, WHERE, BACK WHEN SHE WAS A TEENAGER, SHE SAW A PLAY AND WANTED TO BUILD HER CAREER ON THE STAGE BOARDS Razgovarala: Elma ZEĆO, Photo by: Irfan Redžović

– Work experience in different projects, different directors, different teams, different concepts in which you start from the beginning every time. When you are younger, you think that work is like running - the longer you run, the easier it is to you, but unfortunately, in art it is not like that. Every time you start from scratch, but already with certain boundaries in your head. Each experience teaches you new lessons so that at one point you know what you must not do. Therefore, each new role is a separate journey for which you need different skills. You got your first significant theatrical role at the age of 22, in the award-winning play Spring Awakening, by director Selma Spahić, in which young actors reveal the insensitivity of modern society. What kind of theatrical crossing of lines would be challenging for you today, ten years later? 65

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Ritual before the show “For years I have had the habit of checking my props before the show, although every theatre has a professional propman who flawlessly puts everything in its place. But it made me feel safe and relaxed. Whatever you do, the purpose of the ritual before the show should be relaxation.”

66

– Again talking about truth, our current problems, our mentality. Nudity is no longer crossing the lines, it has long been overcome in both the profession and the private life of people. Everything is naked, everything is transparent, people live lives on social networks without holding on to their intimacy. The art on serious stages examines this phenomenon. Where does the need to publicly live a life come from, doesn’t anybody have any need for introspection, introversion? The expansion towards the outside rules. We exist in the eyes of others, while living for ourselves is fading away. If the photos are not seen, it did not happen. And what is your relationship with social networks? – I behave in the way that is not typical today. I do not have profiles on Instagram and Twitter, and on my Facebook profile I’m active every few months. I do not like to share my privacy and I do not feel that I have to share important things with others, especially with strangers, and to be approved for it. If you have a hundred likes, you must be great, if you have only four, you must be insignificant. My goal is to have a live relationship with another person, to exchange impressions, feelings, opinions. I can be alone for a long time, because in my head I have so much that interests me, that I can always work and never be bored.

A COMPLETE ACTING PERSONALITY In Kamerni teatar 55, to whose ensemble you belong to, you play in two plays of the current repertoire – a romantic comedy and a black comedy. What suits you better? – Romantic comedy is a wonderful genre on which you can build your whole life, which, for example, was shown in a film from long time ago, You’ve Got Mail with Tom Hanks and

Meg Ryan. Black comedy is different, it is MontyPythonian, MisterBeanian, surreal, more intriguing and harder to adopt. The truth that is told from its intellectual depths is always serious, but to be presented as a drama, hardly anyone would want to see it, which is why it must be subjected to comedy. How did you get to feel: I want to act? – When I watched a play as a teenager in Kamerni teatar 55, which as I recall was Premiere, I felt such a strong synergy among the actors that I wanted to be on the stage. That was my first impulse. I never had a vision of film. I wanted a theatre, its boards, to act there. I did not want to be famous either nor all that comes along with the status of a well-known person, to have cars, swimming pools, to have people recognize me on the street. I wanted to one day also make magic that I then experienced. What is the best advice you got from an older colleague? – When I was completing my studies at the acting Academy, Dragan Marinković told me not to refuse anything at the start of my career. ‘Accept all that they offer, and over time you will feel what agrees with you. You will find your way by yourself. ‘ And he was right. The path is built from the beginning when the mistakes can be made if a young actor gets a big role, for which he can be under great pressure or think that he is special. It is better to win it step by step. Thanks to this process, you become more secure, more solid, more adjusted, growing into a completely rounded acting persona who is not neurotic, prone to alcoholism or anxiety. You seem feisty. – And I prove that with my lifestyle. I do not belong to anyone. My first projects were with outsiders, amateurs, conditionally speaking, until I reached the theatre that is known

Energy that wins “I want to be satisfied, because satisfaction opens up the space for the manifestation of good things. As long as person is cramped, nothing can happen. The cramps block person’s good energy.” to be a protected institution. My projects are still trips to anywhere, because I’m interested in the experience that will help me grow in a way that is honest and authentic. It is not a problem even if I make a mistake, because I am a human who is, once again, concerned that his consciousness is noble in essence. What does your escape to the comfort zone look like? – It is most often the escape to literature. I like reading. The books maintain my mental hygiene, they bring me back to modesty, humility and love towards mankind. There are also movies and music that I heal myself with, regardless of its type - movie, classic, modern, jazz or hip hop. Do you recall any unusual situations from your travels? – Of all the cities that I’ve been to, I was most perplexed by St. Petersburg. As much as it is Europe, it is also a twisted part of the world. In the shop windows I kept seeing shoes facing inwards, i.e. placed so that you can only see their heels from the outside. I realised that it is because the customer is supposed to come in. That’s wise. Shoes are there, but you do not see them. What movie would you like to star in one day? – I would like to star in a movie where the director chose one theme and took to it in depth. Such is the movie Manchester by the Sea with Casey Affleck for which he won an Oscar. The phenomenon will always be emotion, one’s heart, one’s soul on the screen. 67

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

SARAJEVO Evropski Jerusalem

Iznad glavnog ulaza u katedralu ističe se luk i bogato uređena rozeta s dekorativnim staklenim vitražom, a u sklopu donjeg dijela rozete stoji kip Srca Isusova.

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Congregational Church of the Holy Mother of God (Saborna crkva Presvete Bogorodice) Not many people know that one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Balkans was built at the initiative of Sarajevans. Following an order from Sultan Abdul Aziz, the construction work took place from 1863 to 1874.

SARAJEVO The European Jerusalem

The Bosnian and Herzegovinian capital, the city of the great monotheistic religions, is surely one of the rare capitals in the world where you can hear the adhan, a call to prayer from the minaret, and church bells at the same time. Throughout history, Sarajevo never turned its back on anyone who was in trouble. At the turn of the 15th century, having been expelled from their homes in Spain and Portugal, the first Jews who came to Sarajevo were Sephardic Jews, while Askenazi Jews from Central Europe arrived with the Austro-Hungarians in the 19th century. At one point, due to the coexistence of Islam, Christianity and Judaism, structure-wise, Sarajevo turned into a colorful mosaic, which became its main feature. You can see its wonderful places of worship just by taking a stroll down the streets in the city center where iconic structures of Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Islam and Judaism are located. 82

The church was built by Andrej Damyanov, who came from a family of esteemed builders, the Renzovski family, associated with many beautiful churches in the Balkans. At present, the Congregational Church of the Holy Mother of God looks somewhat different from what it looked like originally. Made of stone, it had a lead-covered roof back then; however, during the First World War, the Austrians took the lead roof down, including the lead church bells, and covered the roof with sheet metal. Then, in 1921, it was reconstructed for the first time, and new church bells, among other things, were set up weighing 2,800 kg, 1,600 kg and 750 kg. The icons on display at the church to this day are the ones that Archimandrite Sava Kostanović brought from Russia in 1873.

Sacred Heart Cathedral (Katedrala Srca Isusova) Built in the neo-Gothic style in 1889, the Sacred Heart Cathedral is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vrhbosna. Two 43,2-meter-high bell towers are located on the front façade. The bell in the west bell tower weighs 2,5 tons, whereas the east tower contains five smaller bells. Above the main entrance to the cathedral, there is a prominent arch and a richly decorated rosette with stained glass, while a statue of Jesus is placed at the bottom of the rosette. Next to the entrance to the much respected religious edifice, located on the square which is always full of life, there is a monument dedicated to a former head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope John Paul II, who visited Sarajevo in 1997. Josip Štadler, Archbishop of Vrhbosna from the early 20th century, who initiated the construction of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, was buried in it.

Askenazi Synagogue The Askenazi Synagogue, built in 1902 on the left banks of the Miljacka River, between the Drvenija and Ćumurija bridges, used to be the third largest synagogue in Europe. Built in the Pseudo-Moorish architectural style based on the design of Karl Paržik, a renowned architect, who designed it to resemble the temple in Budapest, it has four corner domes and is coated with relief ornaments. Ludwig Jungwirth was in charge of the exterior construction work, whereas Ludwig Oisner was entrusted with interior finishes and paintings. Chief Rabbi Dr. Samuel Vesel consecrated this famous religious edifice. Its east side, facing Jerusalem, houses Aron HaKodesh, a cabinet where the Torah is kept. Regular religious services are performed in the Ashkenazi Synagogue, while the Old Jewish Temple hosts major holidays, among others, the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, forgiveness and reconciliation. 83

PREDSTAVLJAMO / INTRODUCING

Wiener Café BEČKO, A U SRCU SARAJEVA Piše: Elma ZEĆO

B

ečki kafe kao gastronomski objekat tipična je bečka institucija gradeći i do danas važan dio tradicije austrijske prijestolnice. No, istini za volju, ona to čini i šire.

Okolo sjede gosti, dok s desne strane tiho zveckaju šoljice kafe šireći miris ovoga puta sarajevskog autohtonog duha. Vjero-

vatno je zato Wiener Café jedino mjesto gdje možete popiti kafu Sabahušu, Kajmakušu, Razgovorušu, Dočekušu, Razgalicu i završiti dan s Jacijušom.

VIENNESE, YET IN THE HEART OF SARAJEVO Written by: Elma ZEĆO

V

iennese Café as a food and drink facility is a typical Viennese institution, building even to this day an important part of the tradition of the Austrian capital. But, the truth be told, it does so in an even wider context.

ONE STORY, TWO SIDES OF THE WORLD Since the two friendly countries - Austria and Bosnia & Herzegovina - have a common history, its concept of interior design that is characterised by a style of elegance and comfort, was very well suited to the hotel and catering idea of the Berlin-based entrepreneur, Munib Preljević, when he decided to make a Hotel heritage in Sarajevo called Ovo malo duše (This bit of soul). His intention was to blend together the East and the West by imparting

a wealth of legacy to the dynamic past of BH during which different empires changed. Each of them has left its contours visible in the tourist area of the city, where only one thin line divides the old bazaar, Baščarsija, originated in the time of the Ottoman Empire, from the centre which suggests a more Western architecture. Similarly, in the renovated Austro-Hungarian villa, which was built in 1894, the warm Hotel heritage Ovo malo duše is separated from the beautiful Wiener Café. The idea got its final shape in co-operation with architect Lejla Krstić, so the hotel part represents the Orient, while the Wiener Café characterises the West.

STYLE THAT ATTRACTS Almost everything here is decorated just like in a classic Viennese Café. As you enter, your attention is immeditely drawn to a rarity - an old piano of light brown colour, intended for classical and relaxing music notes, which adorns the central part of the ground floor of the Café. The guests sit around it, while on the right, the soft clatter of the coffee cups is heard, spreading the aroma of Sarajevo's autochthonous spirit. This is probably why Wiener Café is the only place where you can drink coffees called Sabahuša (Dawn one), Kajmakuša (Creamy one), Razgovoruša (Chatty one), Dočekuša (Welcoming one), Razgalica (Humouring one) and finish the day with Jacijuša (Time to go to sleep one).

The steel circular stairs that look like a work of art lead you to the upper floor of the Café. There you enter into the contemplative ambiance with comfortable armchairs, retro chairs, marble tables and mirrors of the past century. There is enough here of everything and too much of nothing. There are also new and old items for which the owner Munib, along with his creative team, traveled miles to get to valuable antiques. This is the style of the Wiener Café, which simply invites to everyday socialising of friends, young men and women, married couples and business people. But it is also a place that all the traveling guests of the Hotel heritage Ovo malo duše get to meet because this is where their tasty breakfast is prepared, whether it is English, Bosnian, Sarajevan, Viennese or a simple breakfast. It is guaranteed that everyone will find something that suits them and that will want to come back again, because the level of professionalism that a hard-working team led by Mirhad Arnautović brings to the work in Wiener Café wins for all time. In the summer season, guests of the Wiener Café are attracted to sitting in front of the entrance, in a small summer garden, an ideal place for refreshments, alongside with the pictures of life inspired by the fascinating Baščaršija, visited by the inhabitants of the whole world. It will be hard to find such a level of diversity anywhere. It is time to come and see for yourself. BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Konjic

No, 1945. godine prilikom povlačenja činom bombardovanja ruše je njemački vojnici. Vasilija Velikog.

Plovidba u trajanju od nekoliko sati rafterima donosi nezaboravan doživljaj dok prolaze kroz Mali i Veliki kanjon, krajolik netaknute prirode i adrenalinskih brzaka.

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

KONJIC A TOWN CONNECTING HERZEGOVINA TO BOSNIA AT THE MENTION OF ANY HERZEGOVINA ČARŠIJA (OLD BAZAAR), THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND IS THE SUN. ALTHOUGH SITUATED AT THE BORDER WITH THE COLDER BOSNIA, KONJIC IS NO EXCEPTION EITHER, HOWEVER IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR IT TO BE ENVELOPED BY LOWER TEMPERATURES COMPARED TO ITS SOUTHERN COUNTERPARTS.

The border between regional parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the most striking in this area. Therefore, it can happen that in winter, while you are passing through the tunnel which starts in Konjic and ends in the Sarajevo canton, you witness a total weather transformation due to the snow that has already fallen.

Numerous national monuments Konjic is one of the oldest towns of our country and it is impossible to tell in just one text about all the landmarks that are part of its municipality’s heritage, especially if one takes into account the information that archeological traces date to even four thousand years ago. In this town which is agreeable

to stroll around, the first written traces date all the way back to the year 1382, and it is considered that it had been founded as a border town of the Hum country on an important road connecting Bosnia with Dubrovnik. In the Middle Ages it was under the rule of Sandalj Hranić, the Bosnian Kingdom’s duke, who was succeeded after his death by Stjepan Vukčić – Kosača. In the 15th century already the Ottomans come on the scene and start constructing buildings typical of that time, such as han and caravansaray (roadside inns where travelers could rest), however all the later historical periods also left their mark here. Passing through the town, it is hard not to notice the eye-catching national monument, the old Kamena ćuprija (Stone Bridge) built in 1682. The bridge witnessed different historical

Tito’s bunker Not far from Konjic on the mountain Zlatar, there is a nuclear shelter, commonly known as Tito’s Bunker. The building of the shelter lasted 26 years and cost 4,6 billion dollars. Because of its size – it is over 20.000 m2, containing 100 rooms, offices and conference rooms it is obvious that it was built for the military and political leadership of ex-Yugoslavia. The shelter was able to accommodate 350 people for the duration of six months and no contact with the outside world. 90

periods and is known as an architectural masterpiece of the 17th century. However, in 1945, during the WWII German troop withdrawal, the bridge was bombarded and destroyed. The only remaining parts were stone columns, however in 2009 the bridge was fully restored. At the town center in Konjic there is a religious building complex and yet another national monument Franjevački samostan and crkva sv. Ivana Krstitelja (Franciscan monastery and St Ivan’s Church). Unlike monastery building which was completed in 1939 and 1940, the church was built between 1895 and 1897, while its interior was completed in 1909 and the bell tower in 1919. The monastery museum is filled with relics, including paintings, sculptures, books, priests’ robes and chalices, as well as an ethnological collection. The only mosque in Konjic nestled on the right bank of the Neretva river is Repovačka džamija, a piece of architecture from the year 1579 associated with Hudaverdi Mehmed-čauš Bosna, a descendant of the aristocratic bey family Repovac. The legend says that he instructed the mosque builders to build the minaret on the left side of the river –the ‘heart side’, in memory of his deceased wife and daughter. The mosque is also a national monument. Another religious monument which needs to be mentioned is Hram sv. Vasilija Velikog (the Ortodox Church of St Basil the Great). Its construction on the Varda locality in Konjic at the beginning of 1885 was met with delight among locals back then. Ten years ago, the church and its movable property - icons were given the status of a national monument by the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Zulfikar “Zuko” Džumhur It is well known that the town on the Neretva river is also a birt-

Vlah. This National monument consists of 16 graves with stećci: 15 chests and one tall ridge-roofed stećak. Another interesting place in Konjic region is Šurkovića kula, an old feudal, Muslim manor house. The house is located in Odžaci place, among mountains Visočica, Treskavica and Crvnja. It was built on an incline and was solely used for habitation purposes.

Relaxing in Nature Boračko lake is a tourist gem of Konjic. This is the largest mountain lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina, surrounded by conifer and deciduous forests and Prenj, Visočica and Bjelašnica mountains. The lake attracts a great number of domestic and international guests who enjoy relaxing, swimming and tracking in beautiful surroundings. hplace of the famous travel writer, painter and cartoonist - Zuko Džumhur. He was made famous by his cartoon depicting Stalin portrait hung on the Karl Marx’s office wall while the latter is writing his Kapital.Allegedly, even Josip Broz Tito became fond of Džumhur after seeing this cartoon. The family home of this great man is part of the Native Land Museum in Konjic. The museum was established six years ago, and very soon it became the main source of education about Konjic, its past, region and natural heritage. Konjic region is rich in medieval tombstones called stećak. The most numerous ones are stećci in the form of chest, while the ridge-roofed or slab-shaped ones are equally represented. The necropolises are found in different localities, among them Ravnice in village Dubočani, 11,61 kilometers south-east from Konjic. This site comprises 49 burial stones. On the way from Bradina to Repovci, in village Velika, 78 stećci were discovered on location Mašeti. Yet on another location 2,5 kilometers east from the village Čičev, there is a stećak necropolis called Ograda

White water rafting on the fast Neretva river attracts a growing number of tourists every year. The most interesting rafting track is the one from Glavatičevo to Konjic. A few adrenalin-packed hours of rafting take you from Little and Big Canyon through the untouched natural beauty.

The art of woodworking The long local tradition of woodworking is still nurtured in Konjic. The families Mulić and Nikšić are guardians of this one hundred-year- old tradition that was brought to Konjic by wodworkers from Herzegovina and during Austro-Hungarian monarchy period it turned into an art form.

2. Stub pobjede

3. Otok muzeja

Okružen zelenilom, u sredini Zološkog vrta nalazi se must see znamenitost – Siegessäule ili Stub pobjede.

1. Berlin Wall

2. Victory Column

3. Museum Island

Berlin used to have one of the longest structures in the world, the Berlin Wall, which stood as a symbol of the sad division in Germany for 28 years. Numerous escape attempts by people living in the GDR, and the fact that at least 136 people died crossing the wall, illustrate just how painful the division was. Of a 150 kilometers long piece of concrete, after the fall there remain just a very few traces and tourists never fail to visit them. Most often, they visit the East Side Gallery.

Surrounded by green vegetation, in the centre of the Zoo, there is a must see monument: Siegessäule, or the Victory Column. The figure represents Victoria, the Goddess of Victory, holding a laurel wreath. Since her helmet is adorned by an eagle, she can also be read as symbolizing Borussia, the personification of Prussia. You need to have a reasonable level of fitness to climb a staircase of 285 steps and enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of Berlin.

The Museum Island is a unique complex of five museums on the Spree River. It is referred to as a living Acropolis of Art because it illustrates the evolution of modern museum design, and its collections span 6000 years of human artistic endeavor. In addition, the Museum Island is home to the sculpture of the ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti, the famous Nefertiti Bust, whose name means 'the beautiful one has come', and the Ishtar Gate to Babylon from 6th century BC. 107

4. Charlottenburg palača

5. Grunewald

6. St. Hedwigs katedrala

4. Charlottenburg Palace Charlottenburg Palace was built for the first Queen of Prussia, an educated woman who loved playing the harpsichord, singing Italian opera, and discussing philosophy. It is the largest Palace in Berlin. Having received a large estate from her husband, Sophie Charlotte commissioned the construction of a summer house, and in 1699 she named it Lietzenburg Palace. She invited poets, philosophers, musicians and artists to be her guests at the palace. Even her husband King Friedrich I could only visit if she personally invited him. After her death, the palace was named Charlottenburg in her honor. 108

5. Grunewald When the Berlin Wall still existed, Grunewald represented the largest forest area in the western side of Berlin. The Havel River, which flows through the area, and the Wannsee Lake can be viewed from a tower located there, but the popular Teufelsberg Hill, a former U.S. listening station during the Cold War, offers you equally good views of the whole area. At 3,000 hectares, this forest area is the place to be for all those who love to walk, ride a bicycle and enjoy the peace and quiet in the nature.

6. St. Hedwigs Cathedral St. Hedwigs Cathedral, the most important religious building in Berlin, was often a symbol of religious tolerance. Located on Bebelplatz, the church is more than 240 years old and was modeled after the Pantheon in Rome. It was a gift from the Prussian King Friedrich II to Silesian Catholics who had settled in Berlin. The unusual division of the church into upper and lower sections which are connected by the altar is what makes it so special.

8. Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

The permanent exhibition on display will take you to a two millennia long journey of discovering German-Jewish history. The Jewish Museum Berlin was opened in 2001, and is one of the largest Jewish Museums in Europe. American architect Daniel Libeskind designed it and called it Between the Lines. He was inspired by the Jews and nonJews of the German capital as well as by Arnold Schönberg’s unfinished opera Moses and Aaron.

The Memorial honors and remembers the six million Jews murdered under Adolf Hitler’s and Nationalist Socialists rule. Located near the Brandenburg Gate and designed by Peter Eisenman, an architect from New York, the Memorial consists of a 19,000 square-meter site covered with 2,711 concrete slabs of different size and height. The abstract nature of the field of slabs which seemingly moves in waves, makes visitors ponder deeply over it.

9. Reichstag

The Reichstag building is a historic edifice and the seat of Bundestag, the German Parliament. The Reichstag glass dome is one of Berlin’s most prominent landmarks. Following the unification of Germany and the creation of the German Empire in 1871, the construction of the Reichstag was completed in 1894. Paul Wallot designed it integrating Renaissance, Baroque and Classical elements in order to make it monumental in scale.

10. Brandenburška vrata

10. Brandenburg Gate

Designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans, the Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin’s most beautiful and largest German Neo-classical monuments built between 1788 and 1791. Many events from the nineteenth and twentieth century are related to the Brandenburg Gate, but nowadays it mostly conveys a message that Germany got reunited again. Until that moment, the gate lay between East and West Berlin, and between NATO and the Warsaw Pact during the Cold War.

K

Kako našu zemlju krasi bogata tradicija, a prate je i brojni kontrasti u poređenju prošlosti i sadašnjosti, o čemu djeca, misli Samra, nisu do111

U PRAVO VRIJEME Okosnicu Samrinog života čine ples, pokret i balet. Poput sjene Petra Pana. Često ćete pročitati: “Ballet is life!”

Treba znati pametno plesati i osluškivati svoj ‘instrument’.”

“Ballet disciplines, teaches, educates you… it’s a part of you which grows and matures with you. Like Peter Pan’s shadow” Written by: Elma ZEĆO

S

amra Mlinar Mandić’s educational and professional path is telling of how much knowledge, experience, work and discipline the art of ballet requires. She is currently attending doctoral studies at the Sarajevo Teachers College. She teaches classical ballet at the “Novo Sarajevo” Primary Music and Ballet School, she is president of the “Kurser” association which specializes in creative dances, classical ballet, dance fusion and dance inclusion,

and she creates choreographies at SARTS, the Sarajevo Youth Theatre and for the Music, Theatre and Multimedia Institute.

IF YOU'LL PARDON ME, BOSNIA Recently, the public could see how she thinks as a writer of a theater piece. The first play she wrote called If you'll pardon me, Bosnia, was

staged to mark the centenary of birth of the great BiH writer Mak Dizdar. When asked about the time it took her to come to this idea, the ballerina said: “It was partially staged several years ago within the “Zvrk” Contemporary Dance Festival with senior class students attending the ballet school I teach at. This was in 2010. I wanted to develop that idea and perfect it in terms of its concept, choreography and music ever since. I thought that 2017, the year that marks the centenary of Mak Dizdar’s birth, would be ideal for staging a play bearing a symbolic title If you'll pardon me, Bosnia. Around fifty members of the “Kurser” association performed the play. Trainers gathered around Fresh Generation, a hip-hop dance group, provided useful assistance in the process. All the participants partook in the making of the play’s segments based on the idea I came up with, and it was to tell the story about our country, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in an original way.” Samra thinks that since children know little about the rich tradition, and about numerous contrasting views in comparing the past and present times, the play is very informative and educational. If you'll pardon me, Bosnia aims to have 113

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

children not just as the consumers of the play, but also for children to create a work of art and be a means for getting a message across. “We tried to make each segment, each movement a message anyone could understand. That’s why we recited the verses of Dizdar’s poem ‘Note on the Country’ (Zapis o zemlji) in sign language and we spoke with our bodies, bodies being the strongest instrument of expression. I believe that the message conveyed using a child’s mind, imagination and body is the most vivid one and that it manages to reach just about anyone—both children and adults. We want to say that respect, love and harmony drive everything that happens in the universe, and we are a part of it.“

AT THE RIGHT TIME Samra’s life revolves around dancing, movement and ballet. Having in mind that she is dyslexic, and that she had hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders as a child, enrolling in a ballet school seemed like a good solution at the right time in her life— when she was nine years old. “Since then, ballet has been a part of my life. Ballet disciplines, teaches, educates you… it’s a part of you which grows and matures with you. Like Peter Pan’s shadow. You can often read: ‘Ballet is life!’ That’s really true.”

Samra would never get discouraged. Some of the obstacles she faced during her career did not deter her from her activities, as opposed to many other people. That is why she likes to say: “I compare myself with Phoenix, I always arise from the ashes with even greater desire and enthusiasm for what I do. My dance career has been declining recently, but my career as a teacher and choreographer has been on the rise. My students are recognized as highly successful dancers, and my choreographic endeavors are seen as remarkable. If you'll pardon me, Bosnia is the first play that I wrote, but it’s also the eighteenth play that I’m choreographing.” Thus far in her dance career, she has never sustained a serious injury. “You question every single thing you do. This applies to dancing as well. You need to know how to dance and be attentive to your ‘instrument’.” Apart from ballet, Samra is also really passionate about pedagogy. She always wanted to work with kids and learn from them. That’s because, “We need to look at the purpose of the pedagogical processes from a different perspective and start from the things kids could teach us, the adults. That’s when you discover your love of teaching. My teaching motto is: value the kids as if they were smaller versions of adults. Teachers shouldn’t choose what’s best for each child; instead, they should help each of them discover

what’s best for him or her,” Samra Mlinar Mandić explains. With other artistic souls, she plans to tell other interesting stories in the theater through dancing.

SCHOOL OF LIFE “Playing ballet has not only taught me a lot about myself as a person, but about others too. Dancing has helped me in all aspects of life, particularly in discovering what my purpose for existence was. We’re not aware of just how much we communicate and express ourselves I a non-verbal way. Verbal expression is a code we were taught to use and, in a way, it was forced on us, it’s prescribed and it limits us, unlike body language which is spontaneous and natural.”

utomobil u našem životu znači mnogo. Nije on stvar prestiža, ni imidža, nego prije svega potreba.

Stanje izazvano političko-ekonomskom situacijom u potpunosti onemogućava

117

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

privredni razvoj društva i države. Rast ekonomije uslovljava rast standarda i tržišta automobila. Velike probleme također stvara regulativa naklonjena uvozu rabljenih vozila, a posljedice toga uviđamo svaki dan.

On je najbolji spoj moći, snage i dizajna u automobilskoj industriji.

VW GRUPACIJA MISLI NA SVAKOG VOZAČA Postoji li razlika u muškoj i ženskoj percepciji kvalitetnog automobila? 118

CHALLENGES! THANKS TO THE WELL-VERSED TEAM, LED BY THEIR GENERAL MANAGER OLOVČIĆ, ALL VW GROUP BRANDS HAVE GAINED AN ENVIABLE POSITION ON THE BOSNIAN MARKET AND A SOLID CUSTOMER BASE Interviewed by: Elma ZEĆO, Photo: Edvin KALIĆ

T

he car in our life means a lot. It is not a thing of prestige or an image, but above all it is a need. Therefore, we are not surprised that buyers identify it with the most important material things in life, such as an apartment or a house. “ That's why, when purchasing, their enthusiasm is so strong that it is automatically transmitted to you too, and that's what gives this job a special charm", says Senad Olovčić, CEO of Porsche BH, who, besides being in contact with customers, greatly enjoys joint travels with merchants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, who cooperate with the VW Group, and there are even 37 of them! “ We view the new models together and are thrilled to pass on the 119

experience to our customers later on. The automotive industry is an extremely dynamic sphere which opens many doors to an individual development and progress in life. A person sees a lot of things, takes part in the exchange of new technologies, is at a source of new information, simply feels that he is part of the modern world".

AUDI – PREMIUM BRAND You have a demanding duty. With what kind of expectations of yourself do you start each working day? – On the human side, it is most important that a person is healthy, in good shape and ready for work. It is equally important that your organisation is focused on work, i.e. on the planned daily activities. My working days always start very early. I am the first to come to work and most often I leave the last, which is in line with the responsibilities and commitments of the general manager. It is natural that he is spending more time in his firm, with employees, and above all with customers. What would you consider as the biggest challenges that keep occurring? – Challenges are varied. They can be internal in the form of business problems, but I have to say, there are not many of those considering the general problems of the BH business environment. The state caused by the political and economic situation completely prevents the economic development of society and the state. As such, it reflects on all segments of work, and in our business it is the sale of vehicles. And this is really the biggest challenge that you have to learn to deal with. The growth of the economy conditions the growth of standards and the car market. Big problems are also created by regulations that are in favour of 120

the import of used vehicles, and we face the consequences of this every day. We have an unhealthy environment in which we live, especially in the winter months, as well as a large number of traffic accidents, which, of course, also occur on bad roads, which can be directly related to the fact that the country is not developing. It would be very important for the economy to experience a complete turnaround and focus solely on the direction of rapid progress. VW, Audi, SEAT, Škoda and Porsche, who in the BH market managed to get the leading postion? – Škoda is the best-selling in BH, but this does not necessarily mean that it is also the most popular. Volkswagen is the spine of our group thanks to good experience from the past, i.e. the fact that it was once produced in Vogošća, where the Car Factory Sarajevo (TAS) was located. This brand is desirable and recognisable in our country. If we are interested in the premium segment, then Audi sets out as a real measure, which combines all premium features of a brand in the automotive industry. Audi, in fact, is reputed as a premium brand in BH, but also beyond. However, if someone wants more than that, there's Porsche that represents the peak of making and design. It is the best combination of power, strength and design in the automotive industry. All our brands have their market position and a place with the customers. I am happy with our way of operation in BH.

VW GROUP THINKS OF EVERY DRIVER Is there a difference in the male and female perceptions of a quality car? – Based on customer experience, the impression is that the philosophy of observing cars in women is primarily turned to design, but I want to say that women today are also very knowledgeable about quality, consumption, important technical details. Design is also important for the male population, but men primarily take into account technology and then economic factors. It is important for them that a car still has its value after a certain time, which is typical of our Group's vehicles. Any which one you sell, you will have a great chance of finding a buyer quickly and also to get the optimal amount of money back. Design and technology are common to both, only not in the same ratio. Which car do you personally drive? – As I worked for a long time as a brand manager for Audi, the position and the past have always made me happy to drive this car. Today it is the Audi A6, that is my model, but also a model that is extremely well placed in the business world. People who prefer, or can buy, or want something different, will not make a mistake with Porsche's Panamera or Porsche's Cayenne SUV. Volkswagen and Passat are among the most popular business limousines in BH, although many will certainly say that Octavia is also a good car in the business world. Of course, Škoda also

has made sure to produce its own business limousine - Superb. Which features must a good driver possess? – A good driver should always strive to have a good vehicle, because, as people say, no tools, no craftsmanship. The car needs to be safe and reliable, which is the basic factor. With the vehicles from our Group, the driver can surely get the most out of it, because they certainly provide for it with its technology in all aspects. A good driver also always looks at the viability of buying a car, because one day he will want a new one, and for the old one, if he has made an excellent choice and later on took care of his car, he can always make a return of a considerable amount of money into his budget. Finally, what kind of car do you recommend to novices? – In my opinion, beginners should start with modest demands. I always warmly recommend Polo, Fabia or SEAT Ibiza. Later on appetites and standards can be increased. The possibilities are different and it is difficult to distinguish any car, especially since the personal preferences are primarily the key factor. For some, that may be Golf, to other Audi A3, but somebody will want to take the limousine at the start, if it is his family option. Our company in BH has a wide offer that can respond to different demands and personal preferences of future drivers, and generally for all categories of drivers.

IN STEP WITH THE LATEST ACHIEVEMENTS “The safest car is certainly a new car that incorporates in itself all technological advancements, especially those that relate to the safety system in direct or indirect crashes. VW Group makes large investments to make their cars, from category to category, from existing to new models, additionally safe. The borders are constantly moving.“

VODENI SUPER HEROJ

DJEČAK KOJI JE ROĐEN BEZ RUKU FASCINIRAO JE SVOJOM ŽIVOTNOM ENERGIJOM STANOVNIKE SVOJE ZEMLJE, ALI I ŠIRE Piše: Elma ZEĆO

122

HERO THE BOY WHO WAS BORN WITHOUT ARMS FASCINATED WITH HIS LIFE ENERGY THE CITIZENS OF HIS COUNTRY AND BEYOND Written by: Elma ZEĆO

As mother Elmina carried her first child in her belly, now a boy crowned with a gold medal in the swimming competition, she could not even think that the tears of joy on her face would be replaced by the tears of fear when she heard her son's crying. At that moment, although the medical check ups during pregnancy were all in order, medical staff told her that her son was born without arms and with the deformity of his right leg.

LIFE WRITES INCREDIBLE STORIES It was not easy in the years to come either. Especially when the boy started talking and learning. "As parents, we tried to find the best way for Ismail to accept himself and we all went through different emotional phases, becau124

se there are no words that could describe how hard it is to a mother or a father when the child asks if he can get their arms so that he can do what other children do", Elmina recalls sadly. But that life makes miracles was shown by everything that ensued in the life of a six-year-old Ismail, who has been showing an incredible life energy from the very beginning. Parents Elmina and Ismet taught him to do with his legs everything that is normally done with the arms - to eat, draw, write, play..., and to improve his muscle development they enlisted him last year in the Swimming Club "Spid", which meant travelling twice a week for training from Zenica to Sarajevo. And what Ismail has achieved in such a short space of time rang the bell in the entire region when he won his first gold

medal at the 9th Croatian Regional Championship for Swimming for People with Disabilities. On this topic, father Ismet says: "He has progressed extremely rapidly. Of the younger members of the club he was the only one who met the criteria for participating in the last club competition, which was to swim 50 meters without breaks. When I got back home, my soul was bursting with happiness when I heard that almost 8,000 people at the ÄŒelik stadium exclaimed: 'You are the pride of the city of Zenica'. Ismail always has to be first in everything and to him it is impossible that he can not do something. He likes to compare himself with a super-hero of the animated film, Hulk. He's not afraid of anything. He likes people. There is no prejudice. I've really learned a lot from him". A positive impact on Ismail in his development also was made firstly by the kindergarten teachers of Sindbad nursery, the only one in Zenica who warmly accepted him, followed by the coach Amel Kapo, the founder of the unique Swim Club "Spid". "Thanks to the teachers, Ismail has developed self-confidence, and today he can easily say that he was born that way, that this is not his flaw, but something that makes him special", says mother Elmina.

SAFELY ON THE WAY Ismail is sociable and dynamic in all games. He kicks the ball well, drives the hoverboard, and last winter he also started to ski. Professionals who watched him, says father Ismet, already see the winter paraolympian in him."What is most important to us is that he becomes a good man and that he does the things in his life that he is interested in, and we will always be his support", say parents of Ismail, who starts in September his first year of primary school. Thanks to the Islamic Community scholarship, he will be able to attend the private elementary school Hasan Kjafija PruĹĄÄ?ak. 125

UČINKOVITE MASAŽE BLIŽIH I DALEKIH ZEMALJA UČINIT ĆE DA ZA KRATKO VRIJEME DOŽIVITE PLANETU DONOSEĆI KUĆI, UMJESTO SUVENIRA, TIJELO U POTPUNO NOVOM DUHOVNOM I FIZIČKOM RUHU

N

No, indijska masaža nije samo tretman fizičkih problema. Osim toga, oksigen doprinosi jasnom i kreativnom razmišljanju. 126

Dolazi do opuštanja i blagostanja tijela i duše.

A Trip around the World

IN 60 MINUTES EFFICIENT MASSAGE STYLES ORIGINATING FROM NEARBY AND FAR-AWAY COUNTRIES WILL MAKE YOU FEEL AS IF YOU HAVE TRAVELLED ACROSS THE PLANET IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, AND INSTEAD OF BRINGING A SOUVENIR HOME WITH YOU, YOU WILL BE BRINGING WITH YOU A FEELING OF HAVING A COMPLETELY NEW SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL ROBE ON YOU

T

he Ma’ab Spa Center takes you to an atypical journey featuring Indian head massage therapy involving competent practitioners. A one way ticket reduces stress-induced headaches, as well as pain in the neck and shoulders, improves blood flow to the brain, and lowers eye pressure. However, the Indian massage does not just treat the physical ailments. It is based on the Ayurvedic concept directed at finding balance by bringing the body back

into balance. That way the Indian massage simultaneously assists with a variety of emotional problems and concerns. Massaging the head encourages the supply of oxygen to the brain which is one of the best ways of reducing anxiety and of lifting one’s mood. Oxygen also helps people think clearly and creatively. The Indian massage therapy typically ends with a back massage. Carrying the name of a Scandinavian country, the Swedish massage therapy is also known as the classical massage. It is the ancient art of healing practiced as early as 3000 BC. It traces its roots back to Asia, but since Pehr Henrik Ling, Swedish professor, developed a number of techniques to promote health through movement, it is also called Swedish massage technique. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for metabolism and circulation, and stimulates the internal organs. It also improves flexibility while easing tension in the body and the soul.

Massage therapists at the Ma’ab Spa Center use essential oils to boost circulation and detoxify the body. A special combination of cinnamon, lavender, lemon and orange oils is prepared for each person, and organic teas grown in Asia—woolang, white or green tea—with an amazing aroma, are used.

It is difficult to completely physically and psychologically regenerate the body without taking into account the whole organism. Our feet carry us through life every day—step by step. The fact that there are several thousand nerves in each foot which branch throughout the body speaks volumes about how significant out feet are. Foot reflexology, or the ancient Chinese foot massage, is particularly effective here. It is calming and soothing, it improves blood circulation in the feet and creates balance throughout the body, and when applied, it can be a great tool for overall health and well-being.
