Uvodnik
Intro
As another year comes to an end, it offers us a chance to look back at how far we’ve come. It was around this time last year that the first issue of Furaj.ba magazine came out. Despite notable decline of printed media in BiH, we boldly embarked on this journey of creating a positive image of our country, trying at the same time to present other destinations of interest to our travel-loving readers. Although our project was just a startup, it did not take long before were recognised as a valuable and reliable partner. Shortly after our first issue came out, we served as a media sponsor of Sarajevo Business Forum, and later this year, also as a media partner of Sarajevo Film Festival. In addition, many Sarajevo based embassies were happy to work with us and help us bring the charming images of their home countries closer to our readers. This issue will take you to a fascinating journey to a country which remained committed to BiH and our people, in good times and bad – a journey to enchanting Austria. Keeping up with the pattern you already became used to, we now present the stories worth telling – featuring fascinating places to see across our country, inspiring interviews and success stories of hardworking citizens of BiH who keep raising the bar.
Hvala vam što nas pratite!
Thank you for staying with us!

A THE MOST RECENT SPECIAL EDITION OF THE PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER MAGAZINE, UNDER THE TITLE: “BEST OF THE WORLD” INCLUDED “VIA DINARICA”, A MEGA MOUNTAINEERING AND HIKING TRAIL, AMONG 21 MUST-SEE PLACES IN 2017. TO BE MORE PRECISE, VIA DINARICA WAS AMONG SEVEN BEST DESTINATIONS IN THE WORLD IN 2017 IN THE CATEGORY OF NATURE.
Written by: Vanja ILIČIĆ 16
mong very few photos carefully chosen to illustrate the article featuring 21 must-see destinations in the next year was the one taken by Adnan Bubalo, the official photographer of Via Dinarica. “They selected the photo taken on Mt. Vranica, in the immediate vicinity of Vran-kamen location. The photograph features the image of my friend Senad high up in the clouds”, Adnan says, adding with great pride that Via Dinarica team would be able to use Traveler’s “Best of the World” logo throughout the next year.
PLATFORM FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM Adnan’s photo was taken on the section of the so-called “White Trail”; one of the hree trails of Via Dinarica selected by National Geo-
graphic Traveler. Via Dinarica was conceived to serve as a platform for sustainable development of tourism and local economic growth. It is a corridor connecting eight countries along the Dinarides mountain chain. Within it, Blue, Green and White trails have been defined, named after their distinctive features. The Blue Trail extends along the hinterland of the Adriatic coast. The Green Trail extends along the slopes of the Dinaric Alps, through luscious forests and pastures, which makes it ideal for family hiking adventures and recreation. The White Trail, which connects the highest peaks of the mountain chain, holds particular appeal for thru-hikers, adventure seekers, highlanders, mountaineers, and nature lovers eager to enjoy the quiet serenity of mountain landscapes. Bosnia and Herzegovina was the first country in the region to fully mark and prepare the sections of the White Trail on its territory, in an effort to contribute to promotion

of a greater Via Dinarica complex, which was officially launched in Blidinje, in June of this year. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the project brought together 15 mountaineering associations, countless local communities and a host of individual service providers from food producers to owners of dining establishments and accommodation providers. The total length of this trail is 1,400 km. Kenan Muftić, leader of “Terra Dinarica” team, was a part of the group who walked this trail for the first time and thus made it officially recognised.
FIRST TOURISTS WALKING THE TRAILS OF VIA DINARICA This year, six foreign tourists who were registered, walked the entire trail. The fastest among them took two months and ten days to complete it.
“These six people represent a tip of the iceberg. In addition to them, there are thousands of other tourists who made day trips and completed different shorter sections of the trail. Via Dinarica has enormous potential; it is a unique trail connecting different countries and their distinctive cultures. This
recognition by National Geographic reinforces our commitment to this project. We will continue working hard, to be ready to welcome new tourists next year”, Kenan Muftić noted in conclusion. For more details, visit: www.viadinarica.com 17

N
– Sujetan sam i danas (smijeh).
BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

edicine was his first choice, but fate had other plans for him, which led him to journalism. “Even as a boy, I often enjoyed reading the newspaper and watching political debates. I attended journalism workshops and pursued journalism as a delightful pastime and an opportunity to interact with likeminded people. Over time, the pastime evolved into a calling, which steered me away from medicinetowards a degree in communication, which brought me to where I am today”, says Adnan, as he recounts his journey. We have known you for years as a moderate and calm TV anchor. What was it that shaped your style of work? - It is my own personal belief that any question, even an extremely unpleasant one, can be asked in a way that would compel the 21
BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
interlocutor to answer it to our audience’s satisfaction. What you referred to as moderate and calm demeanour, took years to develop. Along my journey, I went through different phases and had varying degrees of patience with those I interviewed over the years. I adopted that same calm style you mentioned earlier as fitting for presentation of news from the studio. Reporting live from the field is different though. This is primarily due to the adrenalin rush, which always occurs when you report from the spot, describing what you see and trying to convey the atmosphere. You became a journalist when you were 24. Do you remember what it was like to address the viewers for the first time from the improvised studio of TV Hayat? - I remember it as if it happened yesterday. From where I stand today, it’s a cherished memory. I remember not feeling particularly nervous. The mild anxiety that I do recall feeling was rather stimulating and helped me maintain my focus. Do you recall being vain, as a young journalist? - I still am (laughing). I believe vanity is one of key distinguishing features of journalists, especially TV journalists, although young colleagues in media other than TV are also prone to this trait. One way or the other, keeping it in check, understanding it exists, knowing it for what it is and not looking for excuses for it, is what matters. It makes it easier. In your view, what standards need to be met for a particular show to be considered a good one? There are many factors at play there; not trying to list them in the order of importance, I will mention some that come to mind: adequate interlocutors, thorough preparation on the part of the journalist, 22
willingness to improvise, speed – but not at all costs, team work, good editorial evaluation, reactions from the audience and ratings.
THOROUGH PREPARATION AND MODERATE APPROACH How long do you typically prepare for reporting from crisis hotspots? - It depends on how much time I have. In most cases, the assignments revolve around the themes I have a continuous focus on. What matters to me is that I understand the context, causes and consequences. Once those conditions are met, getting day to day information on the most recent developments is easy. Once you take off, what do you rely on and to what extent do you dwell on potential danger? - It takes detailed preparation and detailed assessment, both on my part and on the part of the colleagues who participate in the planning process. Of great value in this context are the people in
What does journalism mean to you? - Clearly, it’s more than just a profession.I know it sounds like a cliché, but journalism is a way of life. You don’t get to have fixed office hours. Different events, accidents or armed conflicts just happen, regardless of one’s schedule. Whether you want it or not, this calling consumes you, without you even realising it.
the field who understand the local circumstances and Al Jazeera’s security and safety requirements. All of these factors are to be addressed for a positive outcome. Nevertheless, some unforeseen situations cannot be prevented, but could be planned for, to some extent, to avoid or mitigate potential damage. What is the place where people made the strongest impression on you? - It’s always the ordinary people that leave the strongest impression on me. I experienced that in Srebrenica, Egypt, Syria… Their stories not only matter the most, but also carry most weight, though we often tend to chase the decision makers hoping to get an exclusive interview. I am not trying to say that those types of reports and those profiles of interlocutors should not have the place and the attention they deserve, but I am doing my very best to follow one of Al Jazeera’s key rules, which is to give voice to the disenfranchised. It’s their stories that often have the strongest impact. Let me be clear – these are the people that stay with me, the people I never forget. I am almost completely certain that I could recall with great accuracy the names of most of the so-called “ordinary” people I interviewed, and I interviewed many of them. How much time do you have to focus on a healthy diet and regular exercise? - I stay away from fast food and carbonated drinks. As for other things, I try to enjoy them in moderation. I have to admit that I have a bit of a sweet tooth. I have no problem with it either (laughing). This past summer, I disregarded working out somewhat, but the miles and miles I walked have hopefully alleviated the consequences of my infrequent exercise regime. As the fall approaches, my resolve to head back to the gym gains in strength!

No, sretnete li veleposlanika Austrije u BiH, Martina Pammera, on će vas ugodno iznenaditi. Jeste li zadovoljni realizacijom i rezultatima?

Slijedeće godine Austrija preuzima predsjedanje OSCE-om, a 2018. godine predsjedanje EU-om, i mi ćemo nastaviti da gradimo kulturne mostove i njegujemo veze među ljudima.
To ljude privlači.
AMBASSADOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF AUSTRIA TO BIH, H. E. MR. MARTIN PAMMER
AT HOME ABROAD THERE IS HARDLY A SINGLE PLACE IN BIH THAT DOES NOT HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON WITH AUSTRIA, FROM BUILDINGS, TO PEOPLE AND COMPANIES. THE SAME IS TRUE FOR AUSTRIA: IN ALMOST EVERY SINGLE AUSTRIAN CITY, AS AMBASSADOR PAMMER EXPLAINED, THERE IS AT LEAST A SMALL POPULATION OF BH CITIZENS, IN SOME CITIES, THESE GROUPS ARE QUITE SIZEABLE. IN VIENNA, FOR EXAMPLE, THERE ARE OVER 100,000 PEOPLE FROM BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA AND OVER 200,000 IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. THERE ARE OVER 20 ACTIVE ASSOCIATIONS OF CITIZENS OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA IN AUSTRIA, AND THE PEOPLE OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA PLAY AN ACTIVE AND PROMINENT PART IN AUSTRIAN ECONOMY AND CULTURE. aving an interview with an Ambassador who speaks your own language is not something that happens every day. However, if you do come across the Ambassador of Austria to BiH, H. E. Mr. Martin Pammer, you are bound to be impressed. It was his own personal ambition to master the local language of each country in which he served. As a result, as his service in Montenegro commenced, his own mission to explore and master the languages spoken by the peoples of former Yugoslavia kicked off. He even modestly claims that he speaks the languages as if he was a “gastarbeiter” in this country. The Cultural Year – BiH 2016, organised under the slogan: “Let’s get to know each other better”, included various areas of cultural and intellectual work. It is now drawing to an end. Are you satisfied with the way it was organised and the results it accomplished? - The Cultural Year 2016 was conceived as a two-way event, focusing on presenting Austria in BiH, with emphasis on modernday Austria and presenting BiH 30
in Austria in the same way. The purpose of this effort was to improve the image and enable the citizens to get to know these countries better. I believe we succeeded. With over 100 events organised in both countries, 80 events in BiH alone, we presented visual arts, architecture, literature and music. We also organised conferences, focusing on mutual perception, the role of Islam in Austria and BiH, issues of women and society, different modes of cooperation between similar institutions in our countries, and provision of support to important cultural institutions in BiH, such as the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra. We also organised many events to launch new books, establish partnerships with artists and sign cooperation agreements in the area of science and technology, as well as culture. Could you tell us more about the planned future projects? In December, we are opening a photo exhibition in Mostar and Sarajevo to showcase the work of young photographers from
Graz and Styria (Steiermark). We are also opening a new Austrian Institute in Sarajevo on 13 December. On 5 December, we are opening the concert season with a performance of the renowned pianist Bartolomej Stanković, under the title “Balkan Madness”. Composers and music from BiH will be presented, featuring different genres, from classical music to sevdah and jazz – the kind of music that has never been experienced in Austria before. This will in essence represent a continuation of the sequence of performances, which commenced with the concert of the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra in Vienna, organised on 29 November 2016. Starting next year, Austria will take over the chairmanship of the OSCE, and in 2018, it will assume the presidency of the EU Council. We will continue building bridges and fostering cultural and personal exchange. It is for this reason that, in addition to the Embassy, Austria has also opened the Office of the Austrian Economic Chamber, the Office of the City of Vienna, the Regional Office for Cooperation in the
Area of Education, the Austrian Cultural Association, the Austrian Libraries and the previously mentioned Austrian Institute in Bosnia and Herzegovina. How many Austrian firms operate in BiH and which stand out as the most successful ones? There are about 440 Austrian companies operating in BiH. Out of the total, the companies providing financial consulting and construction services have the strongest presence. There are many companies active in the area of manufacturing. Derventa, where 13 Austrian high-tech companies successfully operate using the advantages BiH has to offer, is an excellent example. These companies brought in the work ethics highly valued back home in their founding companies and generated 750 jobs. What does your life look like now that you are based in Sarajevo and how do you describe this town to your friends? My guests always find Sarajevo and BiH fascinating, because this is the meeting place of the West, the East, the North and the South. Sarajevo is one of the most interesting cities in the world. Few other cities offer such architectural diversity, displaying visible remnants of the Ottoman era, the Viennese style Western architecture, Yugoslav architecture and finally, modern architecture. Its position is ideal. Opportunities for skiing and hiking are well within reach, while it also does not take long to get to the coast. That is what attracts people. Guests are interested in the historic places, such as Sarajevo as the place of the assassination, or Sarajevo as the Olympic city. People also love the food and the fascinating sevdah music. Put simply, the blend this city offers is both unique
and invaluable. I enjoy being the representative of Austria in BiH. My official life is satisfactory, though very busy. When I have some time to spare, I engage in sports: I ski, hike, ride or workout. I also like to attend cultural events. The Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra is great; I know the language well enough to be able to enjoy a theatre play now and then. The nightlife is also great and incredibly versatile, from jazz to folk music. I wish the day could last more than just 24 hours In which countries have you served in the past, before coming to BiH, and which country would you like to go to from here? I have served in Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Montenegro, and I also lived in Canada and Italy. For me, it would be interesting to go to South America, India or some of the countries in Africa. In this line of work, it would be interesting to go somewhere far away, to a remote and exotic place, but the countries where one’s home country is very present are also quite interesting, since one can make a difference and visible improvements. Vienna will be my next destination. In our diplomatic
service, it is common to have two foreign assignments followed by one assignment at home. I do not know where my next international assignment will be, but I would certainly enjoy a new experience. I would probably apply for a job in Argentina or Columbia.
What do Austrians know about BiH? –In addition to the events that transpired 100 years ago, they quite possibly know who Ivica Osim is; they have most likely heard of other famous athletes and are familiar with the folk music. Little is known about the fact that Sarajevo, Mostar and Banja Luka foster a vibrant cultural scene and that the capital of BiH used to be the centre of cultural life in the former Yugoslavia. This city is the home of excellent graphic arts. In addition, the country has its success stories in the area of business. For instance, the wood processing industry which thrives here, exports its products to Austria, France and Sweden.

I Johann Strauß Stariji (1804.

VIENNESE WALTZ and Ballroom Dancing Season
With the exception of Vienna, there is no other place in the world that stages such romantic and formal ballroom events. This tradition exhilarates locals and visitors alike announcing the season of elegance as the entire city rejoices in the upcoming festivities. 34
LET’S WALTZ! During winter season, Vienna stages over 450 ballroom dancing events, attended by over 400,000 dance lovers from all over the world. The formal programme adds to a uniquely festive atmosphere. The love of Waltz, so common among the residents of Vienna, dates from the 18th century, when the Emperor Joseph II opened up the dances in the Redoute Rooms in the Hofburg palace to everyone. This allowed the Viennese to copy the courtly customs of these celebrations, something they retained to this day. Strict dress codes, an opening fanfare, the entrance of the debutants and debutantes, the call “Alles Walzer” (Let’s Waltz!), dance cards and changes of music, together with the “midnight interlu-
MAY I HAVE THIS DANCE? The entrancing Waltz dance routine introduced an intimate pleasure into formal ballrooms. Johann Strauss Sr. (1804 - 1849), who established the supremacy of the Waltz with his 152 successful pieces, travelled with his orchestra from Vienna to London playing the captivating tunes to entranced Waltz lovers across Europe. “May I have this dance?” is the kind of question that makes one’s heart skip a beat. In Waltz, ladies and gentlemen take turns choosing their dancing partners, so men get
to experience first-hand what it feels like to be chosen.
TO SEE AND TO BE SEEN The traditional Ball Season starts on 11 November and lasts until February of the following year. Over three quarters of ballroom dancers come from Vienna. About 60,000 guests come from other Austrian provinces, and about 55,000 visitors come from other countries. The Chamber of Commerce projected that dancers will spend around 131 million € this year – providing a major boost to the economy. On average, each guest will spend around 270 € for the outfit, jewellery, transportation, hair styling, make up and dining. Ballroom events are no longer considered to be restricted to dancing only. People are increasingly citing meeting friends, acquaintances and business partners as the reason to attend such events. Almost half of the visitors attend ballroom dancing events regularly. The dress code is different from one ballroom event to the other. Traditional ballroom events require ladies to wear a long evening gown while gentlemen should wear a tuxedo.During the Ball Season, Vienna becomes the venue of around 450 small, medium and large-scale ballroom dancing events. The most famous and
the most lavish event attended by around 12,000 guests is the so-called “Opera Ball”, scheduled to take place on 23 February 2017 at the Vienna Opera House – the most beautiful ballroom dancing venue in the world. Foto: ©WienTourismus/Manfred Horvath
Another famous dancing event is the so-called “Café Ball”, organised by Viennese café owners, scheduled to take place on 17 February 2017. We should also mention the Ball of Flowers, Pastry Chefs’ Ball, Firefighters’ Ball, Police Officers’ Ball, Vienna Science Ball… this incredible variety of ballroom events makes the ideal reason to visit the imperial city. de” (generally a quadrille) and the formal ending are all evidence of this. Another unique feature is the “Damenspende”, a selected gift for each lady as she enters the room. The Waltz, being a partner dance, was initially perceived as a provocation, and it caused moral outrage. The Vienna Congress (1814/15), convened in the city to establish the new order in Europe following Napoleon’s campaigns, declared the Waltz to be a sophisticated dance. The exhausting political work was followed by balls, which gave rise to the legendary saying “Der Kongress tanzt!” (“The congress is dancing!”). What the congress was dancing to ultimately moved the world more than any of its decisions. The Viennese Waltz was honoured as the king of the dances.

Viennese Landmarks The splendid Schönbrunn Palace, the former imperial summer residence, is one the most popular places to see in Vienna. The sumptuous palace with its beautifully tended gardens, the Gloriette monument, Palm House and zoo attract crowds of visitors each year. We should also mention the Hofburg (Imperial Palace), which was the base of the Habsburg Empire. These monumental places immortalise the air of the monarchy on the Danube.

VORARLBERG
sela.
Sveobuhvatan Montafon Ski pass uključuje korištenje 62 žičare i ski-lifta, 222 kilometara dobro označenih, vrhunski održavanih skijaških staza, te korištenje besplatnog ski autobusa.

CHARMING MOUNTAIN SCENERY TRADITIONAL WAY OF LIFE, WINTER SPORTS AND COUNTLESS CHOICES OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

epending quite literally on your point of view, you might claim that Vorarlberg is situated either behind or in front of the nearby hill of Arlberg. Either way, you will find that most things function better here, in this remote corner of Austria farthest to the west, right by the border with Germany, Switzerland and Lichtenstein, than elsewhere in the world.
The land of mountaneers Vorarlberg is best known as the land of mountaineers. If you opt to head to the mountaineering heaven, the famous Arlberg, as a part of a group, or on your own, you are almost guaranteed to enjoy lovely mountain inns, luscious pastures, secluded mountain lakes and imposing ravines and even see timid mountain dwellers such as deer or marmots. If you’re into outdoor
sport activities, the Alpine region of Bludenz is the place to be. In addition to an incredible variety of choices of recreational activities, the breath-taking beauty of the natural scenery of the Kleinwalser valley is guaranteed to sweep you off your feet. The farthest western corner of Austria, home of the Bregenzer Wald and its immaculately preserved traditional villages, offers a unique experience of the traditional way of life – the way it used to be. From Bregenz to the high Alps, this charming region is full of idyllic villages where people still grow their own produce and breed cattle. Most visitors find old wooden village cottages, which are quite common here, to be particularly fascinating.
Lovely scenery of the Verwall, Rätikon and Silvretta make the Alpine valley of Montafon perfect for mountaineering. Situated at the altitude of 1,400 m, Gargellen is Montafon’s highest peak. Everything you need for a perfect skiing getaway is right here, though with less pomp and at a somewhat smaller scale. Still, nothing’s missing. This charming valley, home of incredible skiing trails and snowcovered slopes, offers lots of options for fun and adventure. Whether you’re a skier or a boarder, a beginner or professional, you are guaranteed to have a vacation to remember. The Comprehensive Montafon Ski Pass includes use of 62 cable cars and ski lifts, 222 km of well-marked and pristinely maintained skiing trails, and free of charge ski busses. Montafon is also the home of the largest Water Amusement Park in Vorarlberg, which remains open from May to September, offering water adventures for the entire family.
Water sports Swimming enthusiasts and water sports lovers will love Lake Constance’s 27 km long coastline. The lake is ideal for people who enjoy sailing or yachting, but also for those who prefer taking a tour aboard one of many tourist vessels. Gaschurn im Montafon offers the experience of a lifetime. While enjoying the captivating view of Silvretta and Rätikon peaks, which remain snowcapped until May, diving enthusiasts may leap into two huge ecological lakes which occupy the area of staggering 7.000 m². BAD ISCHL

Favourite Destination of
EUROPEAN ARISTOCRATS Just a mention of Bad Ischl calls to mind many images, from Ischler biscuits named after this place and thermal spas, to a favourite destination of European aristocrats. Over 70 lakes, plenty of lovely lookouts, the well-known salt mine and famous ski resorts make this place perfect for tourists.
T
he story of Bad Ischl, is the story of a small town in Upper Austria, situated in the region of the Salzkammergut, a region so incredibly rich in culture and history, even by Austrian standards. The region reached the pinnacle of its popularity after the visit of the Habsburg Princess Sopie, who was believed to have cured her infertility there. Regardless of whether the improvement of the Princess’s health
should be attributed to the medicinal properties of salt, fresh air, or to the simple fact that everything fell into place at that moment, there is no denying that the Princess had became pregnant during her stay in Bad Ischl. It therefore comes as no surprise that her heir, Emperor Franz Joseph, vacationed here each summer, during the course of no less than 60 years. These facts attracted numerous tourists and aristocrats to this place, such as Johann Strauss, Franz Lehár and Sigmund Freud, to name a few... Today, visitors of Bad Ischl can enjoy a gorgeous park and visit the villa which served as the summer residence of the imperial family for decades and imagine for a moment the period in which history was written. Although Bad Ischl is a relatively small place, there is no shortage of cultural events. An incredibly busy calendar of cultural
Imperial Sweets Countless stories have been told of the Viennese sweets, which is why most tourists will not miss a chance to enjoy the famous Sacher cake or visit the Demel Konditorei. Bad Ischl too can boast an equally renowned and famous establishment: its Zauner Konditorei opened for business in 1821 and has maintained its tradition as superb confectionery shop ever since. Its signature sweet, distributed under the name of Ischler biscuit (Ischler Törtchen), is sure to impress even the pickiest customers. The first genuine Ischler biscuits were made right here in the Zauner Konditorei. They were often enjoyed by Emperor Franz and his beloved Elisabeth (also known as Sissi), and you will be able to enjoy them as well, just the way aristocratic families once did, if you pay a visit to the magical town of Bad Ischl and its famous confectionery shop - Zauner Konditorei. 47

The Ski region of DachsteinWest is well-known as a winter sports centre, ideal for families. It features 140 km of ski trails, guaranteed to be covered in snow. The centre offers an amazing view of the Salzkammergut. Despite the fact that the centre is located away from Bad Ischl, guests of the centre are offered free of charge transportation to Bad Ischl several times a day. After having spent a day enjoying sport activities in the open, you should treat yourself to a royal treatment in the Salzkammergut Thermal Spa. AUSTRIJSKI INSTITUT
u Sarajevu
UMJETNOST I JEZIK UVIJEK SU POVEZIVALI RAZLIČITE KULTURE, INTERESE I SVJETONAZORE. POČEV OD 13. DECEMBRA 2016.

The establishment of the Österreich Institute will accomplish two goals. It will intensify cultural ties between Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina as the Institute strives to become a venue where people will be able to master the German language and learn about Austrian culture and values. In addition, the Institute will provide professional development opportunities. „Progress in acquiring skills and language abilities is strongly interlinked with the intrinsic
motivation to learn and study“, Katharina Körner, Director General of the Österreich Institute based in Vienna clarifies. „We expect to have many successful students in Bosnia and Herzegovina.“ „The main focus of the Österreich Institute Sarajevo is to help people improve their knowledge of German in order to improve their chances for employment on the local labor market. With the support of the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the Institute will become a new language and training center“, Mrs Körner explains. In addition to standard German language courses for all age groups (including children) the Institute will provide specific German language training for job interviews and certain industries (IT/call center/internet commerce/tourism). These job-specific German courses will be tailored to the needs of specific groups. Net-

PRIČE O USPJESIMA
U BiH mogu ostvarivati
S druge strane postoji mišljenje njemačke psihologije koja kaže: „The Past is history, the future is a mystery“.
Kakvu viziju ste imali o „Tondachu“ kada ste 1997. godine kretali u posao?

Osvojili ste i najviši austrijski planinski vrh?
Iza Vas stoje supruga i troje djece.
Ovdje mogu ostvarivati svoje snove i očekivanja i vidim progres.
SUCCESS STORIES
In BiH, My Dreams Can
BECOME REALITY JASMIN HOŠO, ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, IS ALSO THE CO-FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF “TONDACH”. THE NAME OF HIS COMPANY BECAME A SYNONYM FOR THE BEST QUALITY ROOF TILES AVAILABLE IN OUR COUNTRY. HE ALSO SERVES AS A PROFESSOR AT THE SARAJEVO SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS. HE WAS AWARDED THE TITLE OF “MANAGER OF THE YEAR” SEVERAL TIMES. IN 2011, HE RECEIVED A GOLD MERIT BADGE FROM THE REPUBLIC OF AUSTRIA.
You’re marking an important anniversary this year: 20 years of presence of “Tondach” in BiH. Looking back, what could you tell us about the past period? - We have always been very enthusiastic and eager to roll up our sleeves, work hard, grow and generate new value. In the past 20 years, we have never focused on difficulties. Over the period that passed, we experienced continuous development and growth. This growth did not just manifest itself in numbers. All of us who have been a part of the “Tondach” system experienced personal and professional growth as well. It is of critical importance to make sure that the development of the company goes hand in hand with the personal growth of the people involved. When companies and their staff don’t see eye to eye on where their goals and objectives are they are driven in different directions, making those goals and objectives difficult if not impossible to accomplish. What vision of “Tondach” did you have in 1997, when you started this business? - The American university professor Steve Blank made an interesting observation when he claimed that planning emerged in socialism. He added that it was very difficult to project the situation as it would be five years from the present moment. He believed that the heritage of planning resulted from the habits
Jasmin Hošo received many awards. He was awarded the title of “Businessman of the Year” several times. In 2011, he received a Gold Merit Badge from the Republic of Austria, the highest award a country can present to an individual.

that were brought about as a result of the socialist way of thinking. On the other hand, the German school of psychology argues that „The Past is history, the future is mystery“. The focus remains on the present and on what can be done right now. Looking back at the moment we decided to start our business here, I clearly recall how enthusiastic we were and how high our expectations were. However, we never focused on what would happen five or ten years along the road. Instead, we choose to focus on what we can at that moment. Our principal concern was to make sure that our system would become stable and sustainable. 50 years ago, a company’s life cycles used to be much longer than they are today. Today, within the period of no more than 10 years, countless companies will have completed their life cycle, from being born, to reaching the pinnacle of their operation, to finally being out of business. That’s typical for modern age.
conquer the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain peak and we succeeded. I would like to climb some other mountain peaks as well, but if I don’t get to do it, it won’t be the end of the world for me. Conquering the Grossglockner or the “Big Bell” was uncharted territory for me. Imagine what it would feel like if someone had told you earlier that morning just before you were about to set off that two days prior to your upcoming adventure an accident happened in the same route, resulting in the death of the most renowned Austrian alpinist! Something like that is bound to give you cold feet in a heartbeat. Nevertheless, I didn’t give up on my mission, which, by the way, was not an easy feat to accomplish at all. On the contrary. Still, I went there, I conquered the peak and I returned home having much to be proud of.
The Austrians also made a huge risk deciding to start a business in a war-torn country. How well were they compensated for the trust they’ve put into your operation? Over the years, we turned a company that was virtually unknown into a business leader, a recognisable brand and a synonym for quality. We became a synonym for a roof, the same way Google became a synonym for a web browser. Some risk still exists of course, but it is often argued that capitalism without risk is the same as socialism. We were all well aware of the risk, but we do share a common goal.
You’re a family man, having a wife and three children. Do you ever recognise in your children the same ambitions you once had? - Without a family, certain things are that much harder to accomplish. For sure, they have always been there for me. Thinking of my children, my son Anel and my daughters Hana and Emina, all I can say is that they are all very different people. Hana and Emina are twins, though with very different and distinct personalities. All of them are very driven in their own way. What matters most to me and my wife is
Is it true that you have also climbed Austria’s highest mountain peak? - I cannot say that I am an active mountaineer. I travelled to Austria with my friend, H.E. Martin Pammer, Ambassador of Austria to BiH. We set off to
that they have healthy ambitions. Their reach is well within reason and their dreams are not impossible to accomplish. They do not have the kind of ambition that would make them feel depressed or lead to frustration. You’re the person who can decide which part of the world to live in. Why is BiH in your view the best choice? - I love this place; I am committed to it. Therefore, together with my family I made a clear choice to live here. To be able to live in your home country, the country you were born in, surrounded by people you love, surrounded by the incredible diversity this country has to offer, is something to recognise and to value; something to hold dear; something not easy to find. From here, you can run your operations virtually anywhere in the world. There’s no limit and everything’s possible. Here, I can make my dreams and hopes come true. I also see progress. Much has been done. Sometimes, it seems like it’s not enough, but there’s no arguing about the fact that this country has moved forward. It’s important to move on. After all, we do have 101 km of highway, we have the best film festival in the region, we have remarkable artists, recognised and acclaimed outside our country, such as Amira Medunjanin and Braco Dimitrijević. One should feel proud. I can say for myself – I am proud to be a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Without expectations there can be no success. A strong correlation between expectations and success has been scientifically proven many times. The higher your expectations are, the more likely you are to become successful. Without expectations, you’re discouraging yourself, making it difficult to succeed in any endeavour.

Najbolja atmosfera zasigurno će vladati u pivnici PAN Winter Pub, smještenoj ispod velikog šatora, u kojoj će se svakog dana tokom trajanja Coca – Cola Sarajevo Holiday Marketa u poslijepodnevnim satima dešavati After Work Zabave.
J
ust as the Advent fever consumed all European cities, it swept across the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina as well. Many were impatient to see the morning of 7 December, when the lamps were lit on the lavishly decorated Christmas tree, announcing the opening of the sixth Coca-Cola Sarajevo Holiday Market at a new location, in Hastahana Park. PAN Winter Pub, located in the big tent, is the place to go for those looking to party and have fun. In the afternoon hours, this place will be the venue of daily After Work Parties throughout the duration of Coca-Cola Sarajevo Holiday Market. The youngest visitors will be able to enjoy Argeta Junior Playhouse, a playing venue dedicated exclusively to them. Another novelty is Addiko Bank sponsored free-entrance ice skating rink, occupying 400 m2, which will remain open for 39 days of Sarajevo Winter Fairy-Tale.
NEW YEAR’S EVE IN SARAJEVO – A NIGHT TO REMEMBER Whether you prefer to spend the New Year’s Eve in the open, or perhaps in one of many hotels, one thing’s virtually guaranteed - superb entertainment programme will keep you on your feet until early morning of the next year.
There are already many people who consider Sarajevo as a top choice for the New Year’s Eve. The weather forecast promises favourable weather conditions, which is great, considering that Sarajevo City Administration is organizing yet another fabulous party at one of the city’s main squares, where crowds of people will be entertained by Dino Merlin, our most popular singer and songwriter, who will have a New Year’s Eve concert in the open for the first time in his career. The programme will commence at 21.00 hrs. In addition to Dino Merlin, whose show will kick off at 23.00 hrs, the locals and tourists at the square will be able to enjoy outstanding music performed by Divanhana and Jehan Džihan, a young and aspiring musician who recently received great reviews from the European media and music critics. If you prefer a more intimate setting, a number of Sarajevo hotels did their best to organise great entertainment programmes. For instance, in Hotel Europe, in addition to gala dinner, the guests will be able to enjoy the beautiful singing voice of Hanka Paldum, the Queen of Sevdah, in addition to a performance by Dženan Jahić. Guests of Hotel Holiday will enjoy an entertainment programme featuring a show by Enes Begović, while mega popular Halid Bešlić will make what promises to be a stunning performance in Hotel Hills. This year, winter magic will be staged at two different locations. In addition to the location in Hastahana Park, another location of Sarajevo Winter Market at Oslobođenje Square will open on 15 December and will remain open until 15 January 2017.

PREDSTAVLJAMO / INTRODUCING
ADVENT U SPLITU
NAJVESELIJA ZIMSKA PRIČA DALMACIJE Decembar, za mnoge najljepše i najveselije doba godine, započeo je paljenjem novogodišnjih lampica u svjetskim i evropskim metropolama. Iako nam zimsko doba misli odvodi u planine, čarobnu zimsku priču ove godine ispričat će Split.
P
Luce i sv.
SVI PUTEVI VODE U SPLIT Dobre atmosfere zasigurno neće nedostajati, a u periodu trajanja Adventa splitski hoteli nude posebne ponude. Program koncerata i događanja potražite na www.visitsplit.com.

he first Advent candle lit in late November merrily announced the beginning of Advent in Split – the pearl under the foothills of Marjan and the magnet for tourists attracting growing crowds of people year after year. Even the most demanding of guest will surely enjoy the upcoming 40 days of festivities; busy city streets, with something going on at every corner; not to mention countless cultural events and a line-up of street vendors offering mouth-watering Dalmatian delicacies. The central stage at Riva, the main city promenade by the sea, will be the venue of diverse musical performances and cultural events, from evening performances of countless DJs and popular bands to day time performances of groups and individual performers creating an air of a traditional Christmas atmosphere for locals and guests to enjoy. Many will rush to now famous Split Christmas Market in pursuit of a variety of imaginative and original Christmas decorations and thematic souvenirs. The festivities will be complemented by church choirs staging performances in all city churches. Families with children will be able to enjoy festive programme for kids, which will reach its pinnacle with the performance featuring a visit by St. Lucia and St. Nicholas and, as expected, by Santa Claus himself. The holiday atmosphere will culminate during the New Year’s
Eve, with the all-night performance of Petar Grašo, guaranteed to keep everyone up on their feet until early morning hours of the New Year. Holiday season is also known as the season of giving, so this year’s Advent in Split will have a humanitarian aspect as well, in an effort to make a difference for those who need it the most. Advent in Split is a proud recipient of “Simply the Best” award for the best Advent on the Adriatic coast, and we have no doubt that this year’s festivities will fully justify the well-earned title.
ALL ROADS LEAD TO SPLIT In keeping up with the holiday spirit, the city of Split made an effort to ensure additional benefits to its visitors. For a detailed overview of all events and performances, please visit: www.visitsplit.com

ZAGREB COUNTY
ŽUPANIJA U KOJU ĆETE SE ZALJUBITI NA PRVI POGLED COUNTY IN WHICH YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT Foto/Photo Marko Vrdoljak
ZAGREBAČKA ŽUPANIJA, POPULARNO ZVANA I „ZAGREBAČKI ZELENI PRSTEN“, SMJEŠTENA JE U SREDIŠNJEM DIJELU SJEVEROZAPADNE HRVATSKE. POVRŠINOM JE ŠESTA, A NASELJENOŠĆU DRUGA PO VELIČINI HRVATSKA ŽUPANIJA.
D
anas je jedna od gospodarski najbrže rastućih domaćih regija, a zbog svoje bogate historije, tradicije, kulture, očuvane prirode, gastronomske ponude i prekrasnih živopisnih krajolika posebno je atraktivna izletnička turistička destinacija. Čineći prsten oko hrvatske metropole, županija je uspjela spojiti savremeni urbanizam i očuvati tradicionalne narodne običaje i vrijednosti. Zagrebačka županija područje je izuzetno velikog bogatstva baštine i prirodnih ljepota (velik broj zaštićenih prirodnih područja, dva parka prirode: Medvednica i Žumberak - Samoborsko gorje, te jedinstveni posebni ornitološki rezervat Crna Mlaka). Šume i gore isprepletene su brojnim planinarskim, pješačkim i biciklističkim stazama. 64
Mnoge priče i legende tog razdoblja i danas privlače posjetioce. Zaljubljenike u drveno graditeljstvo zasigurno će privući ‘drvene turopoljske ljepotice’, jedinstveni primjerci sakralne gradnje, od kojih se ponajviše ističe kapela sv. Barbare u Velikoj Mlaki,
ZAGREB COUNTY, OR ‘THE GREEN RING OF ZAGREB’ AS SOME PEOPLE CALL IT, LIES IN THE CENTRAL PART OF NORTHWEST CROATIA. IT IS THE SIXTH LARGEST AND SECOND MOST POPULATED CROATIAN COUNTY.
I
n terms of its economic potential, today it is one of the fastest growing Croatian regions, and because of its rich history, tradition, culture, preserved nature, cuisine and colourful landscape, it is a particularly attractive tourist destination. The county encircling the Croatian capital manages to successfully unite contemporary urbanism while still preserving traditional folk customs and values. Zagreb County has a very rich heritage and beautiful natural scenery (with a large number of protected natural areas, two nature parks: Medvednica and Žumberak Samobor Highlands, and the unique ornithological reserve Crna Mlaka). Forests and hills are interwoven with numerous hiking, walking and cycling paths. There is also the renovated St Barbara mine in Rude with its educational trail and Grgos Cave (a protected geomorphological natural monument) in the village of Otruševec. Hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and nature lovers can find refreshments in numerous restaurants and well equipped
mountain lodges. Weekend visitors can choose from more than 40 resorts and family agro-touristic homesteads, along with three wine roads - Plešivica, Zelina, and the Samobor wine road. With Purtugizec Plešivica and the Kingdom of Zelina as the most popular wine brands of Zagreb County, the wine routes offer a wide choice of other wine varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Frankovka). Dairy lovers can visit Cheese roads in the Zagreb region that include 12 mini cheese factories in the county and city of Zagreb. This area has a very rich cultural and historical heritage. Centuries of creative construction have created numerous monuments as a reminiscence of its rich past: castles, hillforts, manors, wooden religious heritage, among others. Many stories and legends of the period still attract visitors. Those who are fond of wooden architecture will surely want to visit the “wooden beauties of Turopolje” – unique examples of sacred architecture. The most attractive are the chapel of St Barbara in Velika Mlaka, and a beautiful example of autochthonous secular architecture, the ModićBedeković manor. The valuable archaeological site, Andautonia, is located in Ščitarjevo near Velika Gorica. In the 1st century A.D. it was the seat of the Illyrian tribe of Andautonians and the ancient Roman province, Pannonia Superior. The storybook landscapes, especially in the western part of the county, are embellished by a number of castles that proudly stand as reminders of the glorious past. The Jelačić Curia Nova is a unique example of an integral manorial estate with farm buildings that is preserved even today. There are also various religious edifices, and a special tourist attraction is the memorial room of the Blessed Alojzije Stepinac in Krašić. The cultural offer of Zagreb County is diverse and rich. Numerous festivals and events organised throughout the year,
nearly three hundred of them, attract tourists from surrounding areas, but also from neighbouring countries (the Samobor Carnival, St George’s Day in Turopolje, Jelačić Days, the International Knights Tournament of the Knights of Zelingrad, the Bučijada Pumpkin Festival, the Kajkavian Music Festival “Our Dear Kaj”, “What our Ancestors Ate” Food Festival, Jaska Wine Festival, Autumn in Dugo Selo, and many others). With its exceptionally rich food and wine culture, and offering many cultural, sports and leisure activities, Zagreb County is an ideal destination to suit every taste.

Predrasude i strah

sports and be active. All they need is a chance to show what they’ve got. A lot of people have some sort of prejudice. I am sometimes under the impression that they are also fearful or uncertain of the proper way to behave. For instance, in public transportation, a passenger who wants to let me take his seat would not address me directly. IInstead, he would address the person next to me, asking them to ask me if I wanted a seat. Society should work on overcoming this type of ignorance.”
A Lawyer to Be

This is one of the most heart-warming stories written in our country in 2016. It all started when the media made public his ambition to complete the Sarajevo Half Marathon. He realised his aspiration, as we all remained captivated by the energy of a blind law school student who refused to give up on his dreams. His coach, Tomislav Cvitanušić, helped him in his endeavour. Despite his busy schedule, coach Cvitanušić dedicated months of his life to coaching Mustafa. They ran together – each mile Mustafa ran, Tomislav ran too, right by his side. Written by: Elma ZEĆO
I
t took Mustafa and his coach two hours, seven minutes and two seconds to cross the finish line of the Sarajevo Half Marathon! As he approached the finish line, Mujče opened his arms signalling immense joy and affection for the cheering crowd who applauded him and took pictures trying to eternalise the moment of an incredibly positive atmosphere which captured the attention of Sarajevo that day. As he ran through the finish line, after having completed 21.1 km long race, excited bystanders took turns hugging him and shaking his hand in recognition of his huge accomplishment. Mustafa’s brother was there with him, together with
other spectators, while his parents remained in his hometown of Gračanica, waiting to hear the good news of Mustafa’s feat.
Prejudice and Fear Mustafa was partially sighted since birth. Several years ago, he was forced to face complete blindness. However, he is determined to turn his plans into reality and he refuses to perceive his impairment as an obstacle. It is precisely for that reason that he once said: “Persons with disabilities can do most things other people can do. They can engage in
The successful completion of his debut in a half marathon will certainly inspire others and send a message to other persons with disabilities that they too can be everything they want to be. Mustafa is now contemplating participating in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. “I am still working on a plan of how to meet all the key requirements of importance to participate in this event. That is something I will focus on in the period ahead. First and foremost, I need to find a coach who will work with me throughout the process prior to the event”, Mustafa explains. Mustafa came to Sarajevo from his hometown of Gračanica in pursuit of secondary education. He is now about to complete his freshman year at Law School. “The focus of my interest professionally, is the criminal law. That is the area I want to work in as a lawyer”, Mustafa says. He spends his free time listening to hip-hop music. Local hip-hoppers from Bosnia and Herzegovina are among his favourite performers. Speaking of international hip-hop artists, he pointed to the famous artist Akon, as his favourite. One day, he would like to have his own studio. He has already debuted in the music arena when he took part in recording the title “Do cilja” (To the Finish Line), with Adnan Hamidović, known in the world of hip-hop as Frankie. 69

M
Vrijeme provedeno s psima donosi posebnu radost i raspoloženje. Upravo zbog toga
zovu ga pas koji se smije. Uz to, krasi ga i duga, gusta bijela dlaka.

BREEDING SAMOYEDS
A laughing DOG FAMILY OSMANOVIC FROM KLJUČ HAS BEEN BREEDING SAMOYEDS FOR 5 YEARS. THE STORY BEGAN WITH THEIR LOVE FOR ANIMALS. Written by: Elma ZEĆO
T
hanks to their parents, Melis Osmanovic and his sister were raised surrounded by animals. But their biggest wish – a dog with a pedigree – was only achieved after the brother had enrolled to college and spent the first free summer working in Germany as a student. He spent the money he earned on a female Samoyed named Lea. At his sister’s urging, he also bought a male, Toby.
A DREAM TEAM In time, the story of pets slowly turned into a story about breeding. Today, along with three Samoyeds permanently providing the offspring, the family also has a chow chow – the new breed they want to begin working with. Melis explained the division of tasks in his family: „The whole family is taking care of Samoyeds. It all depends on other obligations we may have, but in general I am in charge of exhibitions, sales and delivery. Mom is a grooming master, and dad likes to take
74
them for walks. Although she is currently studying in Munich, my sister also plays an important role in this story. “
DOGS ARE A SOURCE OF JOY Melis remembers countless beautiful moments with Samoyeds. „Undoubtedly, dogs are humans’ best friends. Time spent with dogs brings a special kind of joy and pleasant emotions. I enjoy every new litter. Working with puppies is the best thing. We are also happy with the results our dogs are achieving. For example, I was overjoyed when my dog, named Dr. Wolf Hey Baby Boo, won the second place at the international dog show in Split, among 5500 other dogs. She is currently one of the most promising Samoyeds in our region and beyond“, says Melis, and continues: „Their smile, that is what makes Samoyeds so special. They are
known as laughing dogs. Additionally, they are adorned by long, thick, white hair. They are ideal for families, and very sociable. They get attached to people, and it is wrong to chain them and keep in the yard constantly. “ For people who want a Samoyed with a good pedigree, a potential future show dog, puppies’ prices range from 1000 Euros upwards.
SIBERIAN DOG Samoyeds require lots of dedication and care. Their country of origin is Russia, or more precisely - the Western Siberia. The root of their name was found in a Siberian nomadic tribe - Samoyeds. Male Samoyeds are approximately 57 cm long, weighing from 20-32.5 kg. Females reach height of 53 cm and weight of 17-25 kg. 75

I poslije toga opet „četiri mladića idu s Trebevića, prate ih pjesma i smijeh...“ 77

he adventure of four young men exploring the charms of Mt. Trebević was immortalised in the verses of Duško Trifunović, a beloved poet who spent the most prolific period of his life in Sarajevo. These verses later served as an inspiration for a musical evergreen which caught on and remained popular in Sarajevo ever since. In the old days, the vast coniferous forest of Mt. Trebević purified the air and served as the lungs of Sarajevo and many neighbouring communities. During the period of war, the location suffered substantial damage and in the years that ensued, it appeared as if everyone abandoned it and gave up the idea of ever enjoying it again. Only ten years ago, Braco Babić and Drago Bozja, the authors of a fascinating publication under the title: “Mountaineering – Tourist Guide to the Mountains around Sarajevo”, wrote that mountain inns and camping sites no longer existed
on Mt. Trebević, noting that the only exceptions were two modest dining establishments at the location of Brus. Fortunately for many nature lovers, the situation is now much better as Trebević is about to restore its old splendour. This claim is best illustrated by the fact that as many as 2,500 guests visit Trebević over weekend. Interestingly enough, growing number of foreign visitors are swept away by the charm of Mt. Trebević and luckily for all of us, the mountain has more to offer every
The city administration repeatedly gave its assurances that the famous Trebević cable car would be restored by the summer of 2017, enabling the citizens to travel the distance from the city centre to the lookout on Mt. Trebević in no more than seven minutes. In the meantime, those who enjoy walking may reach Trebević starting from Vijećnica or Latinska ćuprija passing through Jarčedoli. Those who prefer other forms of transport may take a minibus from Latinska ćuprija to Brus, which has
through Vraca settlement, drive by “Sunnyland” park, continue through thick coniferous forest and proceed cautiously along somewhat menacing section of a winding road, dotted with long S-curves, popularly referred to among the locals as “8 shaped curves”. While struggling to safely make it to the top, one may notice massive iron hooks still protruding through the concrete retaining wall by the side of the road. Though these hooks were originally installed ages ago, in 1909, they are
day. Mountaineers were the first to return to Trebević. In 2011, “Napredak” Inn was opened, announcing a new era for Trebević, as one of the favourite natural attractions for the citizens of Sarajevo and their guests, capable of accommodating both those interested in day trips and those looking to stay a bit longer. Today, the Inn is a meeting point for mountaineers, hikers, adventurers and nature lovers from which they set off to a mission to explore this luscious mountain. The position of the mountain and its proximity to the city makes getting there very easy.
recently evolved into a lovely tourist complex, featuring a cosy restaurant and lots of entertainment and sport facilities. The complex now includes a lovely pond, cycling and hiking trails, grill/barbecue spots, a volleyball court, a football pitch and a paintball venue, in addition to a playground for children. Not far from the complex is the location of the picturesque village of Dovlići. “Trebevićki raj” restaurant and newly constructed “Villa Andrea” are both located quite close to the village. Those who decide to get to Trebević by car will take the uphill road
still intact. Believe it or not, they had their purpose. They were used as leverage for extraction of cannons which would then be mounted on horse driven carriages and transported to nearby fortresses. The road continues on, to the location of what used to be “Prvi šumar” outing spot, a while back. “Pino Nature” hotel was opened at the location last year. The location of the hotel also includes a reconstructed hiking trail and an outdoor volleyball court. It is expected that baby ski lift would become operational at the location, starting this winter season.
In conclusion, we must mention what used to be the Olympic bobsled track, now decorated in imaginative graffiti illustrations and only partially repaired. The poor condition of the track has not discouraged the Sledding Association of BiH from organising training for their teams. Despite the poor condition of the facility, many visitors would not leave Trebević without a selfie taken on the track. Once that mission is completed, they can return home, just like the characters from the poem referred to earlier, who introduced us to story of the magical charm of Trebević.

Vrijedi doći i osjetiti kako stvaralačka prošlost živi danas. 84

T
he first coppersmiths in Sarajevo were mentioned in 1489. As time passed by, they grew in number. Therefore, at the beginning of the 16th century they formed a guild (esnaf). Some families were in this business for more than 150 years. Moreover, as mentioned in historical papers dating from the beginning of the 18th century, this was the first guild whose members started trade of copper, tin and coppersmith products. Formation of a specific workshop for arts and crafts during the Austro-Hungarian rule was an additional encouragement to development of this craft.
A Family Business Slowly step into a workshop owned by Hajji Mirsad Brkanic. Since 2005, this coppersmith has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage. As a small boy, he wished to learn and continue his father’s and older brother’s coppersmith work. He was raised this way. As Mirsad explained, all the families engaged in traditional crafts that are more than 500 years old wished to have a male child. Not only to inherit a family name or the property, but the craftwork as well. To keep the business in the family.
His education of a future coppersmith began when he was only ten or eleven years old: that is, when he grew old enough to come to the workshop by himself and bring his father a lunch. The father motivated him wisely and discreetly, praising and rewarding his first steps into the future of a craftsman. At first, he used to keep him in the workshop for a while. Mirsad’s job
was to hand his father the tools, so he would have learned their names. When he turned twelve, Mirsad had already started doing some easier tasks himself, e.g. decorating small plates. “The first products we made were given to strangers for free, as gifts. But our father was convincing us they were sold. We were so happy that somebody wanted to buy our 85

creations, so we worked even harder to create more beautiful pieces”, Mirsad recalls. Apart from the family business, Mirsad also graduated on the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Although he had worked as an engineer, he remained faithful to his craft. Twelve of his close family members make him particularly proud: the high quality coppersmiths who are also in the business. The youngest member, Mirsad’s 9 years old grandson, surpassed the tradition and started coming to the workshop when he was only seven. He insisted on holding a hammer in his hands, and started getting used to its sounds very early. Nearby, we passed by another workshop, the one owned by Mirsad’s son, Vedad Brkanic (41). This year, he is celebrating 20 years as a professional coppersmith. In these modern times, when there are so many attractive professions, 86
it was surprisingly soothing to hear someone saying: “I am happy with my job”. Asked if the job ever gets monotonous, he explained: “That could never happen. You always want to make something more beautiful than you did before. In fact, you are constantly competing with yourself. I am always trying to make ornaments that are even more challenging than those I made before.
It is like a video game with no end. There are many levels, but you can never get to the end.”
A Powerful Art Another workshop in Kazandziluk belongs to Ismet Alagic. His story with coppersmith craft began as he turned 15, old enough to start the vocational training. “For three years, I was taught by the best craftsman in Bascarsija, Asim Jabucar, may he rest in peace. I stayed there for two more years to practice my skills. Afterwards, I have opened my own workshop, the one where I have kept working to this very day. I have spent last fifty years in this street”, stated Ismet. Entering his workshop, a visitor cannot but notice a large tray on the left wall, approximately one meter in length. Ismet refers to it as his masterpiece, emphasizing it is a 20 years old product. But the tray is not the only one of this type. Other walls in the workshop are also decorated with
the two trays of the same size. The price of each is the same 2500 BAM. On the same side of the street, slightly ahead, toward the entrance to Kazandziluk, we have reached a young, 27 years old coppersmith, named Jasmin Muratovic. He was attracted to coppersmith craft two years ago. Jasmin studied under a well-known coppersmith Nasir Jabucar. “My experience of art implies something very big, important. It brings plenty of love, attention, interest, acquaintances, and an opportunity to avoid bad things in life”, stated Jasmin, pointing out that he likes everything about his job. “I do not find anything about it hard to do. One just needs to have a good will, a reason, and be willing to make an effort.” Kazandziluk is a street shrouded in tradition. Coming here and feeling its creative history still alive and breathing is undoubtedly a well worth experience

vali dolazak u tamni vilajet. Da im bar prvi dojam bude očaravajući. Da prevare sami sebe. I uživaju u toj prevari bar nakratko. Imaju i ljudi u Travniku.
Odgovarao sam mu kratko, direktno jer u Travniku nemam običaj posebno pametovat’.
I sliku i vodu i mahalu i evlije i dželate i musafire. I na početku i na kraju.

here’s an image you see as you enter Travnik. Some rocks, the meadow, the castle, minarets, the neighbourhood (mahala), the madrasah, the old town. As I remember, I came to Travnik for the first time from the west. Several years later, I entered the town from the east, which is only logical, given that Sarajevo, my starting point, is to the east from Travnik. I made an effort to try to remember if I have ever seen that image before. I know, I was in Travnik and yet, I cannot believe that I forgot this image. In Bosnia, the most beautiful settings welcome visitors as they enter from the east or the south. It is as if the Turks were trying to make the arrival to the “Dark Dominion” more pleasant, to make sure that the first impression would last. To fool themselves and enjoy, if only briefly. There are people in Travnik as well. The residents. They are difficult to describe. Whatever observation you make about them, it’s bound to be wrong. One striking feature shared by all citizens of Travnik is that they only have one “ć”, not two like the rest of us, who have to struggle to decide which one to use. People say Travnik is the town of the righteous ones and the executioners. On one side of the street the madrasah, on the other, the jail, so one must
tread lightly. Town neighbourhoods in Travnik are on the hills, either on the sunny or the shady side. The winter strikes both sides equally. When Vlašić meets Lašva and Hendek meets Plava voda, no sunshine’s strong enough to overpower the chill. The only real warmth is the one that comes from within. The town has its fragrance too. To some, it’s the smell of “pitica”, a local variety of pita bread, which they like to compare with the smell of “somun”, but it’s really not the same. For others, it’s the hypnotising smell of “ćevapi” the high-fat Travnik variety of the popular dish. Again, these do not compare with anything else. There are those who think that it’s the smell of Vlašić cheese, referred to Travnik cheese in the entire world, but not in Travnik. To me, it’s the smell of the floor in “the Colourful Mosque” (Šarena džamija). I cannot tell if it
Written by: Vedran JAKUPOVIĆ
comes from the wooden floor, or the carpets or the light or all of it, combined. This heart-warming fragrance is especially strong during winter. There’s a chronicle as well. It is an ongoing feat, one never stops reading it, but also never stops writing it. I don’t really recall the point in time when I became a part of Travnik Chronicle, but it dawned to me one fall as I finished my morning prayer and was greeted by an unknown man on my way from the “Colourful Mosque”, who approached me with warm: “As-salamu alaykum, how are you, how’s the family”, and disappeared behind the tinted glass of bakery door, probably to get fresh bread rolls. I answered briefly and directly, without hesitation; when in Travnik, I try not to act smart. I prefer to listen. I appear wiser that way too.
There is a house up above Lončarica and the cemetery. It appears as if it’s keeping the entire town under a close watch. I was thinking of how great it would be to get that house and watch what’s going on. It is for sale, but the price is so steep it feels like the owners don’t really want to part with it. Not everyone can keep this town under watch. No need for it either. There is only one who keeps it under watch. The town, the water, the mahala, the righteous ones and the executioners and the travellers. On their way in and out.

Preciznosti radi, još jedan takav postoji i u Sarajevu u okviru instrumentarija Gazi Husrev-begove muvekithane, no riječ je ipak o ručnom satu.
TRAVNIK
TRAVNIK
A Town with Soul IVO ANDRIĆ’S HOUSE, CLOCK TOWERS, SUNDIAL, OLD TOWN, PLAVA VODA SPRING AND ŠARENA DŽAMIJA (COLOURFUL MOSQUE) ARE THE PLACES TO SEE IN TRAVNIK. TRADITIONALLY, THE PLACE TO GO FOR THE BEST COFFEE IS LUTVINA KAHVA (LUTVO’S COFFEE), BUT COMPLETE TRAVNIK EXPERIENCE ALSO INCLUDES A MEAL OF FAMOUS TRAVNIK VARIETY OF ĆEVAPI AND A QUICK STOP IN ONE OF MANY SMALL ESTABLISHMENTS BY THE ROAD TO GET A TASTE OF THE WHOLESOME AND INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS VLAŠIĆ CHEESE.
T
ravnik will share with you countless stories of its glorious past every step of the way. Let’s just mention that it used to be the capital of the Bosnian Pashalik for 150 years, the residence of 77 viziers and a seat of two consulates. The first references to Travnik date back to 1463 when the famous Sultan Mehmed II, best known as Mehmed the Conqueror, passed through the town on his way to Jajce. To be able to truly feel and appreciate the soul of this old town, one must visit this place, which emerged on the banks of the crystal clear Lašva river.
OLD TOWN FORTRESS It is believed that the fortress was built in the late 14th or the early 15th century for the King Tvrtko Kotromanić II, though 93

some sources also suggest the possibility of the fortress being built for King Stjepan Dabiša. Erected above the small creek named Hendek, which remains alive during winter, but dries out during summer, this fortress is Bosnian national monument which features the architecture of medieval, Ottoman and AustroHungarian eras. Today, the fortress is the popular venue for many cultural and entertainment events.
BIRTHPLACE AND MUSEUM OF IVO ANDRIĆ The museum is located in Zenjak Mahala (residential area). During its lifetime of over a hundred years, the house which perfectly exemplifies typical Bosnian architecture changed several owners. In early 1970s, after Ivo Andrić received the prestigious Nobel Prize for literature, the value of the house was recognised and the house was purchased from the owners at the time and repurposed to serve as a memorial museum. Several exhibitions featured in the museum, including the Birth Room, the Travnik Chronicles Room, the Photo Exhibition Room with the photographs from the Nobel Prize award ceremony, the library with art collection and the “listening” parlour, all depict the life and creative endeavours of Ivo Andrić. The museum continues to collect the exhibits which may be of relevance to the life and literary opus of Ivo Andrić.
PLAVA VODA SPRING It springs from a rock and completes the setting of the most beautiful outing spot in Travnik. Incredibly relaxing and refreshing sounds it makes as it flows were the reason the entire settlement was named Šumeće, after the sound of the soft hum Plava Voda creates as it travels along its course. The most fascinating place along the course of Plava Voda is a small restaurant named Lutvina Kahva (Lutvo’s 94
Coffee). The coffee served here earned its fame after the Austrian Archduke and the heir to the AustroHungarian throne, Rudolph Franz Carl Joseph stopped here to have a coffee. After what must have been a superb coffee experience, the young prince gave the owner of the café a gold ducat, as a token of appreciation. Coffee pot the famous coffee was served from and the coffee cup the prince sipped his coffee from were kept in a special display case, and the coffee was fittingly named the Rudolph’s coffee. Since the local residents referred to coffee served here as Lutvo’s coffee, the new name did not stick for very long.
the mosque after it was destroyed in a fire. The mosque complex includes a small cemetery, where the son of Mehmed Pasha Kukavica, Miran Ibrahim Pasha was buried.
SUNDIAL
ŠARENA DŽAMIJA (COLOURFUL MOSQUE) Colourful Mosque or Suleymaniye Mosque, is situated in the part of Travnik named Donja Čaršija. It is believed that the mosque was built in the late 16th century. Written records suggest that the mosque was built by Gazi-Aga. Other sources point to the fact that vizier Ćamil Ahmed-Aga, built a mosque in 1757. The mosque was completely destroyed in a fire in 1815 and a new mosque was built at the same location by Suleyman Pasha Skopljak. Due to colourful ornaments decorating the mosque walls both inside and outside, the mosque was fittingly named the Colourful Mosque. The mosque’s minaret is located on the left, instead of the right side of the mosque, which is the norm
for Islamic places of worship. Moist and unstable surface on the western (or the right) side of the building was cited as justification for this deviation from the norm.
HAJJI ALI-BEY’S MOSQUE Bosnian vizier Mehmed Pasha Kukavica built a mosque in Gornja Čaršija in 1757, known today under the name of the Mosque of Hajji Ali-Bey Hasanpašić, who restored
Travnik is the only town in BiH with a working sundial. For the sake of accuracy, let us add that there is another sundial in Sarajevo, operating within the observatory of the Gazi Husref Bey’s Mosque. However, the said device, much smaller in scale, is actually a pocket sundial. The precise date of construction of Travnik Sundial has unfortunately not been recorded. It is also now known who built it. It is believed that the sundial existed within the complex of the mosque originally built by Mehmed Pasha Kukavica, which was burnt down. Since some parts of the original mosque were salvaged and used during reconstruction, it is possible that the new sundial occupies the same place as the original sundial, in the shallow indentation on the southwest wall of Hajji Ali-Bey’s Mosque. At the time it was built, it was used by everyone in town. In addition, mechanical clocks on two of Travnik’s clock towers were synchronised with it. In those days, it was very uncommon for one to own a pocket watch or a wrist watch. The privileged few among the Travnik’s elite used to set their watches to match the time shown by the sundial.
TRAVNIK’S CLOCK TOWERS Travnik is also the only town in the world with two clock towers. In the 18th century, the ruling viziers had built 20 metre high towers visible both in Donja and Gornja Čaršija. While the exact date of construction of the Musala Clock Tower was not known, the Clock Tower in Gornja Čaršija was built by the side of Hajji Ali-Bey’s Mosque in Travnik, most probably by Mehmed Pasha Kukavica in the 18th century. The clock tower was reconstructed in 1817 by Suleyman Pasha Skopljak, who added a four sided wooden roof with a space under the roof for a bell. During the same time, Austrian Consul von Smischen helped with the purchase of a clock with four dials and a bell which resonates loudly even today, announcing full hours and quarters of an hour.

BOŽIJA KUĆA PORED PUTA
Čudesna priča o
Ivanu Krstitelju CRKVA SVETOGA IVE NIJE TEK OBIČNA BOGOMOLJA KOJA SLUŽI ZA OBREDE STANOVNIŠTVU OKOLNIH MJESTA. TO JE, PRIJE SVEGA, ZA VJERNIKE KATOLIKE, JEDNO OD NAJVEĆIH SVETIŠTA U BOSNI I HERCEGOVINI, ALI I REGIJI
K
osmanske vladavine ovim prostorima.
A HOUSE OF WORSHIP BY THE ROAD
A Stunning Story of St. John the Baptist THE ST. JOHN CHURCH IS NOT AN ORDINARY HOUSE OF WORSHIP USED BY THE LOCAL RESIDENTS. FOR CATHOLICS, IS IT ONE OF THE HOLIEST SHRINES IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA AND THE REGION.
W
hen you travel from the royal city of Jajce towards Banja Luka, some ten kilometres down the road, in the village of Podmilačje, you will see to your right a rock, solid and imposing enough to guard the tower which used to stand on top of it, which as some historians suspect, was used as an outpost by the soldiers of Hrvoje Vukčić, who guarded the city from that side. Right by the footing of the rock, a small church was built in mid-15th century, dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The church remained intact even during the Ottoman era. It is interesting that this church is the only medieval church which continuously served its purpose, since the day it was built. It has been reconstructed and expanded several times over the
past several centuries, and the whole compound, including the church and the adjoining buildings was burnt to the ground in the most recent war. The church alone has been restored in the year 2000. It needs to be added that the Church of St. John was not just any place of worship, used for religious services by the local residents. For Catholics, it is, first and foremost, one of the holiest places in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region. Every year, on the eve the Feast of St. John the Baptist, which is observed on 24th June, thousands of devoted believers from all over the world gather here. It is believed that the prayers offered at this place bring happiness and good health. It has even been noted that several patients, given up by the modern
medicine as hopeless, were miraculously cured. Observation of the Feast of St. John has a very long tradition in this region. The cult of this great Catholic saint is related to John of Wildeshausen (Germany), who was assigned by the Pope to go to Bosnia and eradicate heresy. Since there were no heretics in Bosnia, John recognised the intent of the Hungarians and the Pope to provoke a crusade to Bosnia under the excuse of fighting heresy, which would put Bosnia under foreign domination, so as a sign of protest, John returned to Germany. The Pope persuaded him to return to Bosnia and he agreed to do so, under his own terms. He choose Jajce as his residence and relocated there in mid-13th century. He was held in very high esteem by the local residents, for his honesty and sincerity. He was very close with the local people and often helped them in addressing their everyday problems. He also taught them to use herbs and herbal potions to treat different ailments. He helped the poor, fed the starving and treated leprosy. The people regarded him as the saint even during his lifetime. By the way, Hrvoje Vukčić commissioned construction of the church to honour St. John the Baptist and demonstrate his loyalty to the church. Since there was no road to Podmilačje, one must have walked to the church on foot. Sadly, Hrvoje Vukčić did not live long enough to see his endowment complete. He died in 1416. and the church was consecrated a year later. At first, just like many other church buildings at the time, the church did not have a bell tower. Friar Antun Knežević claims that the bell tower was constructed by Podmilačje Pastor, Friar Augustin Purgić in the 19th century.

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA DA TI KAŽEM KOLIKO JE SATI

P

T
he first known sundial originates from 15th century BCE Egypt. It was made of two simple levers set atop of circle divided into four sections. Each section was subdivided into six smaller sections, making it equivalent to division of day into 24 hours, as we know it. Cleopatra’s needle placed in the Central Park, New York, was a part of a sundial. People later realised that a common wooden pole or an iron bar stuck into ground surrounded by stones could also serve as a sundial. Stones served to mark the position of shadow as it travelled in circle during the day. Simple sundials cannot be as precise as other chronometers. They accumulate a difference of 15 minutes in a year, on account of Earth’s orbit being elliptical in shape, and Earth’s axis inclined. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, towns with sundials still in place are rare. Travnik is one such town. Sundial in this town is placed in a shallow space on the south-western wall of Haji Ali-Bey Mosque. No one knows when the sundial was placed where it is today and by whom. It is possible that the sundial was original part of the mosque, built by Mehmed-Pasha Kukavica, which burnt down. Since parts of the original mosque remained intact, it is quite possible that the sundial as well remained
where it was placed originally. When it was set, it served as a public chronometer, to be used by everyone in town. Mechanical chronometers built into two clock towers in Travnik were set according to the sundial. Same goes for wristwatches owned by wealthy town residents. This sundial remains an interesting attraction. Tuzla too, a city of salt, has its sundial. It is placed at the entrance of “Mejdan” sports hall and is surrounded by cypress trees. It is accurately set to reflect the cardinal points, also engraved at its base. The sundial is made of a marble, featuring two shadow casters. The east side of the dial shows the time since sunrise to sun’s culmination on the horizon (local noon), while the west side of the dial shows the time from noon to sunset. The top of the marble sundial features a model of the Planet Earth, showing accurate incline of its axis. As it is common for sundials to be placed at a visible location, frequented by many people, an initiative was started in Tuzla to relocate the sundial from where it is today to Salt Square (Soni Trg) or the Pannonica Lake, both of which are frequented by locals and tourists alike.
SARAJEVO’S LUNAR CLOCK TOWER In 1529, a building was built as an endowment, on the western side of Gazi Husref-Bey Mosque in Sarajevo, outside the mosque walls. The building, in addition to offices for staff of the endowment estate, included a soup kitchen serving free meals to students and the poor and a guest house offering free accommodation for travellers. In late 16th century, a clock tower was added to the existing complex. A document dating from 1697 shows that it was rebuilt after having been damaged by fire. The clock of the clock tower shows lunar time, which means that, according to it, a day ends at the moment of sunset. The tower features four clock dials, facing all four cardinal points. The clock mechanism was built in London, in 1875. When it was to be installed, the upper part of the tower was extended to ease the installation and provide good visibility. Given that the duration of a day keeps changing every day, changing the time of sunset, the clock mechanism needs to be set daily as well. At the moment of sunset, the clock tower shows 12 o’clock, which often puzzles the tourists. It is interesting to note that this is the only clock tower in Europe showing lunar time.

Z

THERE ARE MANY FORTS STILL STANDING IN THE REGION AROUND CAZIN, TELLING THE TALES OF THE TIMES LONG PAST… ONE AMONG OF THEM, OSTROŽAC, STANDS OUT AS THE PLACE PERCEIVED BY VISITORS AS ‘OUT OF THIS WORLD’.
Castle’s Glamorous Past
OSTROŽAC 104
ts unique position made it popular in the past as a seat of countless rulers, with dukes of Blagaj, Ottoman agas and beys, provincial captains and many other dignitaries of the time making the castle their home at some point during their lives. That fact alone is perhaps the best illustration of the importance Ostrožac Old Town had in the turbulent past of Cazin province.
Those who ruled it adapted the castle to their own taste and the needs of their families in different
eras. The people who visited the castle before the World War II broke out, left their impressions behind: “The castle is lavishly decorated. The rooms are filled with valuable artefacts. The castle features several music parlours and a library with extensive book collection, not to mention many paintings, portraits of family members, large and small sleeping chambers, hallways featuring hunting trophies, intricately carved and ornately decorated furniture.”
Government Seat Ostrožac Old Town is located in the western corner of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The fortress is located on a hilltop above the left bank of the Una river, 12 kilometres away from Bihać in the direction of Bosanska Krupa. The first written references to Ostrožac Old Town date back to 1286. Renowned annalist Ivan Tomašević boldly claimed that the place existed in 405 B.C. under the names of Horosium or Hostosach, but those claims have not yet been historically documented and verified. Throughout its history, the town rulers would come and go, each hoping their legacy would remain long after they are gone. In 1579, Ostrožac came under the rule of the Beširević family, whose provincial captains ruled it over
the period of almost 300 years. Since they ruled it for so long, the Beširević family acquired the title of ownership over the old town and the fortress and Mehmed Bey Beširević sold Ostrožac Old Town to Lothar von Berks, who served as the administrator of Bihać County between 1896 and 1905. Restoration of the complex and construction of the castle commenced soon after this transaction. The administrator moved into the castle in 1902
and continued his service to the Habsburg Monarchy, ruling the Bihać County on its behalf. Later on, during the course of the World War II, Ostrožac Old Town served as the seat of the Headquarters of the National Liberation Army. It is believed that the process of planning of the ground-breaking event: the second session of the Anti-Fascist Council for the National Liberation of Yugoslavia, took place there.
SCULPTURE PARK The Old Town’s flamboyant bohemian charm can be attributed to sculptors’ colony, first established in 1969. The resulting sculptures now inhabit the Sculpture Park, which showcases incredible variety of sculptures carved out of Bihacit stone. Among many sculptors who donated their work to town’s impressive collection are Stipe Sikirica, Tomislav Todorović, Stipe Ledić, Ahmet Bešić and Samir Sućeska, in addition to many other talented artists. The tradition of artistic expression through sculpture continues as the town’s collection keeps growing year after year. Due to its historic significance alone, Ostrožac Old Town, the gem of Bosnian medieval era, certainly deserves to be restored to its old splendour.

PALMINO DRVO, DRVO JE ŽIVOTA O ZNAČAJU PALMINOG ULJA ZA NJEGOVU ZEMLJU, UPOTREBI I VRIJEDNOSTI GOVORIO NAM JE MALEZIJSKI AMBASADOR U BIH NJ.E. ANUAR BIN KASMAN, NASTOJEĆI NAJDRAGOCJENIJI PROIZVOD SVOJE ZEMLJE PRIBLIŽITI I NAŠIM SUGRAĐANIMA 123

Zbog njegove višestruke koristi u Maleziji ga često nazivaju i drvom života.
124
produktivnost prestaje u 25. kada prestaje davati plodove. Velike plantaže palminog drveta u Maleziji zahtijevaju i brojnu radnu snagu.
Palmino ulje sadrži velike količine vitamina E i vitamina E plus i nema nimalo intenzivan okus niti boju,
PALM OIL
PALM TREE
– A Tree of Life
AMBASSADOR OF MALAYSIA IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, H.E. MR. ANUAR BIN KASMAN, MET WITH US AND DISCUSSED THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PALM OIL TO HIS COUNTRY’S ECONOMY, ITS USES AND ITS BENEFITS, TRYING TO SHOWCASE MALAYSIAN MOST PRECIOUS PRODUCT AND BRING IT CLOSER TO OUR CITIZENS

alm oil industry is by far the biggest generator of income in Malaysia, and Malaysia happens to be the second largest producer of palm oil – the most widespread vegetable oil in the world. Around 40% of production and 44% of international export is generated by Malaysia. Malaysian palm oil is exported to over 150 countries world-wide. Being one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of palm oil and palm oil products, Malaysia plays an important role in sustainability of the global demand for cooking oils and fats as it is projected that 125

lobal demand for these products would increase to 75% by 2050. “Today, Europe is one of the main markets for export of Malaysian palm oil and it is anticipated that the region’s demand for Malaysian palm oil would continue to increase”, Ambassador explains at the outset of our interview, as he continues to describe the specific nature of palm tree and the process of production of oil from the fruit of the oil palms. Its versatility is the reason this tree is referred to in Malaysia as the tree of life.
PALM TREE “The kind of palm tree we use in oil production is very special. Once you plant it, you will be able to harvest the fruit from it for the next 25 years. Unlike palm tree, corn and sunflower plants, also used in oil industries, have to be replanted every year. Once the palm tree is planted, it will take no more than three years before it bears fruit. After three years, you can harvest the fruit every month, for the next 25 years. Although a palm tree may live for up to 40 years, it ceases bearing fruit after 25 years. Large palm tree plantations in Malaysia require substantial workforce. As Malaysians are often unable to supply sufficient workforce for this massive industry, labour is often imported from other countries, most commonly from Indonesia.
IDEAL FOR FRYING We see restaurants nowadays switching to palm oil for deep frying, because palm oil can be used several times, without any harmful effects to food or those who consume it. Exposure to heat has no impact whatsoever on its neutral flavour and aroma or its chemical properties.
In Malaysia, we have about 5.4 million hectares under palm tree plantations. Millions of people have been actively involved in the process, from plantation workers, to transport providers, processing workers, salespeople and advertisers. At the moment, our production output is about 19.7 million tons of oil per year, most of which is used in food industry”, Ambassador explains. “Palm oil is very versatile, but in terms of its use, it is divided into oil intended for consumption and oil intended for other uses. Most of the palm oil produced is used in food industry, in production of ice cream products, confectionery products, sweets, margarine,
Delegation of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), headed by Dr. Kalyana Sundram, Officer and Director of Science of Environment, visited Bosnia and Herzegovina in September of this year. The most important purpose for the visit of the Council to Bosnia and Herzegovina was to initiate bilateral talks with business entities from Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the course of the visit, a business dinner was hosted for business partners to demonstrate the uses of palm oil in cooking and explain the advantages of use of this type of oil in food industry.
chocolate, cereals and wide variety of snacks. Production of these products heavily relies on solid palm oil. Palm oil is rich in vitamin E and vitamin E plus. It does not have strong aroma or colour and its flavour does not interfere with the flavour of food it is added into. Its energizing gold colour makes it ideal ingredient of salad dressings. Palm oil not intended for consumption is often used in cosmetic industry, for production of lipsticks, soaps, washing agents and toothpaste products. Certain ingredients of palm oil are used in production of bio-diesel. There are many uses for palm oil. Whether you like it or not, whether you know it or not, it is present in each household”, Ambassador Kasman clarifies. “There are products of different quality and different use, which means the prices are different too. There is a world of difference between the highest quality gasoline and the low quality gasoline, and the same is applicable to palm oil. Needless to say, the cheapest oil is the one that sells best”, our host concluded in the end.
EUROPE AS A MARKET EU is the third largest importer of palm oil, after China and India. Only the companies running environment friendly and sustainable businesses are allowed to compete in the EU market. Such mode of operation requires them to replant their plantations from time to time and to be mindful of the impact of their business on the environment. The companies who show little regard for these values are not allowed to export to the EU market. The biggest importer of palm oil in Europe is the Netherlands. Palm oil accounts to as much as 40% of all oil products imported through the Port of Rotterdam.
