this, in this issue, we have the Government’s words together with those of Portia Pierrel, a director at global accounting firm PwC, who explains it in clear terms what this all means. Alongside this we have insight and comment from a number of top machinery manufacturers and suppliers. In addition to this, news has reached me during March alone from three leading UK machinery and equipment suppliers which are in the process of moving to larger, more effective premises during the next few months. All three have said that this is due to combination of being able to satisfy growing demand from existing customers, to expand stockholding of both machines and parts, and with a view to introducing new agenicies. We will know all about these moves in due course, not only within these pages, but hopefully with video reports to bring these visits to life for readers and viewers alike. Looking forward to May, what would have traditionally been an enjoyable and productive visit to Cologne, Germany for Interzum – visiting the world’s top materials, fittings and components suppliers, along with acquaintances and good friends – unfortunately this cannot be the case. British Woodworking Federation to leave CTI and go its own way The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has today announced that it will start the process to withdraw its membership of the Confederation of Timber Industries (CTI). The Confederation of Timber Industries was established in 2015 by the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) and the British Woodworking Federation (BWF). It is an umbrella organisation representing the timber supply chain. Following its inception, the membership has increased to include the Structural Timber Association (STA), Wood Protection Association and the Trussed Rafter Association (TRA). In recent years, the CTI has focused on increasing the profile of the timber sector as a solution to help solve the UK’s housing and climate crises, with a heavy lean towards structural timber solutions. While the BWF has fully supported the work of the CTI and will continue to do so, the BWF
Board and Council now wish for the BWF to step away from the CTI as a member, to focus on the primary objectives of the woodworking, joinery and manufacturing sector. Helen Hewitt, CEO of the British Woodworking Federation said: “There are many challenges and opportunities for the woodworking, and joinery industry as we ease towards the Road Map to Recovery. We have seen the direction of the CTI change in the last few
years and noticed there is a much heavier focus on structural timber solutions rather than the full timber supply chain and its products which has driven the decision to start the process to leave the CTI as a member association. We are fully confident that through our own PR strategy, intensive lobbying activities and our continued memberships of Trade Associations such as the Construction Products Association (CPA) and Build UK, we can continue to represent our members in the construction sector and with Government. She added: “We would like to thank Roy Wakeman the Chairman of the CTI and the CTI Board for their support and dedication over the last few years and shall look forward to continuing to work with our fellow Trade Associations to increase the use of timber as a preferred material of choice.” www.bwf.org.uk

Softwood spearheads timber import resurgence in 2020 Softwood import volumes for 2020 saw a +3% rise against 2019’s totals, after falling -24% in Q1/Q2 of 2020, to reach 6,580,000m³, reports the Timber Trade Federation. The cumulative volume for softwood in 2020 was up by 200,000m³, from 6.3 million m³ in 2019, following a surge in timber imports in Q3/Q4 2020 – primarily from Sweden, Germany, Latvia and Russia. Provisional full-year data for 2020 reveals total timber and panel import volumes between Q1/Q2 2020 were -26% below the same period in 2019. By the year’s end, improved second-half volumes had cut the deficit over 2019 to just under -3%. Q4 helped lead the recovery, as volumes for all products were nearly +39% higher than over the
same period in 2019. A total of 4.9 million m³ was imported between August and December 2020, with the nextlargest volume over this period being back in 2006, when volumes reached 4.8million m³. David Hopkins, CEO of the Timber Trade Federation, says: “After the first lockdown in March last year, the timber industry, just like the rest of the UK economy, came to a near standstill, and the volume of timber being imported fell sharply. “Meanwhile, demand increased dramatically, both in commercial construction – which has managed to carry on during the pandemic – and domestic projects, as so many people were forced to spend more time at home, and spent their disposable income on refurbishment rather than holidays
or other bigger-ticket items. It has led to timber becoming one of the most sought-after commodities in the UK! “The higher levels of import
should help ease some of the pressure we have seen between supply and demand, though we do expect the tight conditions to continue well into 2021.”

John Smith John Smith, former sales director of J J Smith Woodworking Machinery, and a well know figure in the industry, has died following a short illness. Along with his brother Colin, John was one of the second generation to enter J J Smith which was established by their late father Bill and his three brothers back in 1923. Joining the business in 1962 John initially worked on sales of the Smith range of classical machinery manufactured in the Liverpool factory, and was also involved in the purchase and sale of used/ reconditioned equipment. In the 70s, John was credited with pioneering the import and sale of new machinery manufactured in Europe from companies such as SCM, Maweg, Klockner, and
Balestrini, and this trend continues today with the company still importing a huge range from leading manufacturers in Italy, USA, Germany etc. John will be remembered across the industry as someone who always looked for the positive in any situation. He also has a phenomenal memory for people and faces, which was invaluable at exhibitions where he simply ‘knew everyone’. Retiring from full time work in 2002, John was appointed chairman and was still involved until 2017, having worked continuously for the company for 55 years. The business continues to be a leading player in the industry, and is still family run by the third and fourth generations. John will be sadly missed by all his colleagues at J J Smith and the wider woodworking machinery community. He is survived by wife Val and daughters Sarah and Kate.

New temporary tax reliefs on qualifying capital asset investments from 1st April 2021 The Government has said that this new measure will temporarily introduce increased reliefs for expenditure on plant and machinery. For qualifying expenditures incurred from 1st April 2021 up to and including 31st March 2023, companies can claim in the period of investment: – a super-deduction providing allowances of 130% on most new plant and machinery investments that ordinarily qualify for 18% main rate writing down allowances; – a first year allowance of 50% on most new plant and machinery investments that ordinarily qualify for 6% special rate writing down allowances. The measure also temporarily amends the rules covering expenditure incurred on plant and machinery used partly in a ring fence trade in the oil and gas sector. Legislation will be introduced in Finance Bill 2021 to amend Part 2 CAA 2001 to bring in the super-deduction, an enhanced temporary 130% first-year allowance for main rate assets, and a 50% first-year allowance for special rate assets. Certain expenditures will be excluded. The general exclusions at s46 will apply. In addition, there will be exclusions for used and secondhand assets and expenditures on contracts entered into prior to 3rd March 2021 even if expenditures are incurred after 1st April 2021. Assets used wholly within a ring fence trade
will be excluded from the super-deduction, as they already have a 100% allowance, with assets used partly in a ring fence trade temporarily qualifying for a 100% first-year allowance. Plant and machinery expenditure which is incurred under a Hire Purchase or similar contract must meet additional conditions to qualify for the super-deduction and special rate relief. The rate of the super-deduction will require apportioning if an accounting period straddles 1st April 2023. The rate should be apportioned based on days falling prior to 1st April 2023 over the total days in the accounting period. Amendments will be made to Chapter 5 to bring in new disposal rules that will apply to assets that have been claimed to these allowances. Disposal receipts should be treated as balancing charges (taxable profits), instead of being taken to pools. The calculation includes rules which treat only part of the disposal receipt as a balancing charge, if part of the original expenditure is claimed by these temporary allowances, or part is claimed by other capital allowances. Further, for assets that have been claimed under the super-deduction, the disposal value for capital allowance purposes should take the disposal receipt and apply a factor of 1.3, except where disposals occur in accounting periods straddling 1st April 2023, resulting in a factor lower than 1.3. This rule does not apply
to the 50% first-year allowance for special rate expenditures. Anticpated business stimulus Commenting on the introduction of super deductions on businesses’ capital investment, Portia Pierrel, director, PwC said: “The super deduction represents a new increased temporary tax relief for companies who invest in certain qualifying capital assets from 1st April 2021, and is anticipated to stimulate £25bn in business investment in the UK. It is expected to benefit capital intensive businesses, such as manufacturers and utilities companies in particular. “This measure will allow a temporary first-year allowance; including a super-deduction of 130% on most new plant and machinery investments which would have ordinarily qualified for 18% relief, and a first year allowance of 50% on most new plant and machinery investments which would have ordinarily qualified for 6% relief. This will provide not only an accelerated timing benefit but additional tax relief on expenditure incurred. For example, we anticipate a manufacturer incurring £10m of expenditure on a new factory to receive an additional £1m of cash tax saving over the two-year period the measure is in place.” www.gov.uk www.pwc.co.uk
What industry suppliers have said … TM Machinery Sales “The new super deduction has made it the best time to invest in new machinery. The new incentive offers customers looking to purchase a new Striebig vertical panel saw significant tax savings. This, plus the added benefit of favourable exchange ranges and low finance rates, is making woodworking machinery more affordable than ever. “We’re already seeing increased machinery sales enquires since the budget earlier this month and we’re expecting to see a rise in sales over the next 12 months off the back of the announcement. This is great news for machinery manufacturers and the woodworking sector as a whole.” SCM Group UK “SCM are very pleased with the Government’s decision to spur capital asset investment to modernise UK production. “All manufacturers should look at keeping their equipment up to date to improve their competitiveness and achieve superior levels of safety and workplace welfare. This regardless of fiscal stimuli.
“The Government incentive adds the extra encouragement to do so immediately. Looking beyond the mere substitution of obsolete equipment, the opportunity should be taken to aim towards revisiting the production process, increasing flexibility and customisation, delivering outstanding finish, improving sustainability and the adoption of Industry 4.0 solutions to drive performance supported by readily available data. “Only a handful of superior equipment suppliers like SCM can offer all of this, and the added benefit of a 130% temporary tax relief on qualifying capital asset investments eliminates logical justifications to wait any longer to do so. It’s temporary: catch the benefit while it is here!” Palamatic “The super deduction on business investment by the Government will assist woodworking companies to invest in capital equipment that will result in productivity and process improvements and offer increased profitability.” “Vacuum Tube lifting has provided a solution to safe lifting and handling
in the woodworking sector for many years. Companies soon realise after purchasing their first unit that the productivity improvements within that process offer additional financial benefits, they hadn’t previously been able to factor in and regularly proceed to purchase more units. “One operator can load, unload, rotate, inspect, re-load and finally palletise panels, doors and sheets of material. Applications we regularly provide equipment for include loading and unloading vertical panel saws, beam saws, dimension saws, flat bed CNC stations edgebanders, laminators, paint lines, and tilt tables” Michael Weinig (UK) “The new super deduction means for every pound our customers spend, their tax bill can be cut by up to 25%. This will make the UK capital allowance value the highest in the OECD - raising us from 30th to first – and making us extremely competitive internationally. “This offers huge potential for both furniture manufacturers and machinery manufactures alike. In fact, we’re already experiencing an uplift in enquires from people keen to benefit
from the new allowance and invest in higher technology machinery – it is really a double bonus of paying less tax and getting your hands on the latest equipment. This is a really positive sign and Weinig UK expects to see industry growth in the next 12 months.” AAG “The announcement by the UK government of its super-deduction initiative will prove both a timely and much needed boost to future business growth in the wake of the devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. “The initiative, which enables qualifying companies to benefit from significant tax cuts on capital equipment investments, will also be augmented by the already compelling inducements enshrined in ownership of an AXYZ machine and the tangible contribution made to business growth and profitability. AAG already provides a raft of customer support enhancements as part of a comprehensive and costeffective purchasing package and these are due to be further supplemented by important new developments to be announced shortly to mark the group’s 30th Anniversary.”

Thoughts on the 2021 Budget by JJ Smith Last March, unprecedented times called for unprecedented measures, with the government announcing financial support packages to help both businesses and individuals as the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Fast-forward to this March, the 2021 budget delivered earlier this month highlighted that we are still in the emergency phase of the pandemic, with a focus on securing an economic recovery and ensuring business stability. JJ Smith managing director Martin Smith offers his point view … “JJ Smith, the UK’s leading supplier of woodworking and off-site construction machinery, was particularly thrilled with the budget’s focus on new machinery investment. Beginning April 2021, the Government is investing £25bn in the UK’s future growth and prosperity. “Through the 130% super-deduction, companies can cut their taxes by up to 25p for every pound they invest in new machinery. If a company was to invest £50,000 in new machinery, it would reduce their taxable income by £65,000. “This provides a fantastic opportunity for UK businesses to invest in new woodworking machinery that will enable them to be more productive, innovative or efficient while simultaneously reducing their corporation tax liabilities. If companies use this incentive from the government to buy machinery from us, they know that they will be getting world class equipment with long-term support from a company that has been trading for nearly 100 years. This incentive could be a fantastic opportunity for a large number of our customers to take on new projects and we’re excited to see what they do with it,” says Martin. “JJ Smith is also proud to supply machinery to the offsite construction industry and welcome the increased focus on this construction method. Liverpool City Region was highlighted
Commercial director, Rachael Baker
JJ Smith MD, Martin Smith, with former apprentice Ben Pybus
as having an ambitious proposal for MMC in the budget, and as industry experts, they think this is a fantastic opportunity for the region as a whole. “JJ Smith welcomes the focus in the budget on investment in the construction industry as a key driver for jobs and prosperity in the UK. In particular as a leading supplier through its subsidiary company Modular Building Automation of automated equipment solutions for the offsite sector. Being the only offsite construction machinery supplier in the UK, MBA company is well placed to assist businesses large and small looking to innovate in this sector,” says Martin. Furthermore, JJ Smith is a family business based in Knowsley which strongly believes in the benefit of apprenticeships and is proud to provide employment and training opportunities to local people.
Operations manager, Dave Moore
Pictured is rising star Ben Pybus who has just completed his apprenticeship and is now a fully qualified engineer. “Ben has shown a fantastic aptitude for engineering over the course of his apprenticeship and we’re very proud of all that he has achieved. He is a real asset to the company and he has a bright future ahead of him,” says Dave Moore, operations manager. The announcement of the plan for additional £126m for 40,000 more traineeships in England is good news for young people. This will fund high quality work placements and training for 16-24 year-olds in 2021/22 academic year. As well as this there is an extension of the apprenticeship hiring incentive in England to September 2021 and an increase of payment to £3000. JJ Smith currently employs five apprentices and endeavours to hire two new apprentices every year, so naturally welcomes the incentives for companies like theirs to continue to offer opportunities to young people to start their careers. Commercial director, Rachael Baker says: “There are a number of announcements in today’s budget that we welcome. The Modern Methods of Construction Taskforce is good news. We are proud to supply machinery to the offsite construction industry and welcome the increased focus on this construction method. The super-deductions on capital investments in machinery assets provides a fantastic opportunity for UK businesses to invest in new woodworking machinery that will enable them to be more productive. Rachael concludes: “We welcome the Liverpool City Region Freeport status and the possibilities that easier trading could bring to us as a company, and the increased apprenticeship funding is excellent too.” 0151 548 9000 www.jjsmith.co.uk

Formica Group – adaptable design and preparing for the unknown Across the commercial landscape, every sector has successfully risen to the evolving challenges that the current situation has presented, making temporary changes to allow the economy to re-open and create safe environments for colleagues and customers alike. Looking to the future, and anticipating the shifting needs within commercial environments, Nina Bailey, Formica’s design manager, delves into what adaptable design means for the changing world. Recent events have encouraged us to think about what really matters in life. As a society, we’ve found a new passion for a more down-to-earth and humble lifestyle, which here at Formica Group has led us to think about the relevance of design trends as we know them. When examining the idea of trends, they are usually positioned in a way that implies being inspired or motivated by something. This year has seen designers being forced to live and move in a very different way – rather than looking for specific trends, a movement towards enhancing a space and working with what we have has been prevalent. In the absence of typical design trends, we’ve James Burleigh creates commercial furniture that puts surfacing at the forefront. been inspired by themes within commercial spaces. We’ve looked to commercial environments such as offices, retail, hospitality and leisure in order to future-proof for the unknown. Businesses are looking at how short-term design ideas can be adapted for long-term use. Design solutions initially had to be easy, quick and low-cost in order to re-open the economy – now, with the benefit of time, businesses are looking for aesthetically pleasing, hygienic solutions for the future. Flexible design strategies can take advantage of modular furniture and fixings to make active changes. In a phased approach to navigating through these times, flexibility requires addressing safety alongside functionality. Modular seating makes for a great sustainable investment, whilst, in the short term, allowing for social distancing. Designer, Ciszak Dalmas, created a circular module seating arrangement for an art gallery using ColorCore Compact – together, the stools create a solid circle fit for group gatherings of the future, but easily break away as individual seating for the now. In the office sector we’re seeing limited use, with many still working from home where possible. Futureproofing this area for a full return to work includes the adaptation of well-designed screens between desks, and adjustable walls in

Designer, James Burleigh, creates commercial furniture that puts surfacing at the forefront. With multiple table designs, James has chosen Formica Laminate as his choice of material, utilising the hygienic properties that come with it. Designing adaptable spaces is an exercise that considers the present and the future. Much like nature, spatial design doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to be able to change based on new information – for example, what’s going on in the world, and how that affects the people using the space. Staying attuned to these internal and
external factors is what adaptability is all about. As a society, our understanding of wellness is deepening and becoming more collective. Shared spaces are to undergo a critical assessment of how they best support those who use them – not just for productivity and the economy, but for safety and wellbeing. Designers already know how to create beautiful environments, and in a post-Covid world, they’ll be able to design healthy, adaptable and versatile spaces too. Hygienic surfacing, such as Formica Laminate, can enable such projects to deliver the correct balance. Discover the collection. www.formica.com

‘Horizon Scanning – New Hardline and Softline Materials’ is latest focus for FIRA The Furniture Industry Research Association has published their latest guide which takes a view of what is, and what could be on the horizon for the furniture sector in terms of alternative materials, and the pressures from specific consumer groups which might accelerate their adoption. Throughout the 20-page guide, author John Hubbard, technical consultant at FIRA International (the service provider to the Furniture Industry Research Association) considers diversification the industry may need to take in terms of alternative materials, either driven by environmental concerns, consumer preferences or regulation changes. Sections within the guide include: • Furniture – innovation, restrictions and standards • Alternatives to leather including mushroom based, pineapple leaf, kelp based, cactus based, apple based and food waste materials
• Alternatives to wood including hempwood, bamboo, wood composites, lab grown wood, paper based materials, micro-cement and wood transformation technologies • Bioplastics • Filling materials • Alternatives to synthetic textiles • Chemical treatments • Smart textiles • Additive manufacturing Speaking on the guide, Hubbard said: “During the 20th century furniture manufacture and demand was revolutionised by the introduction of mechanised methods of manufacture and the availability of new materials such as foams and synthetic textiles. Now we see a shift to a greater focus on sustainability and circular economy, alongside consumer groups having a stronger ‘voice’ in demanding choice to meet their values, all amplified by social media. In addition there is no doubt that the use of chemicals, not just
in furniture, is coming under greater scrutiny. “It’s imperative therefore that the industry continue to look to ‘alternatives’ to key materials such as leather, wood and textiles. Fortunately we can look to other sectors of industry who have been investigating and adopting alternative materials, for example aerospace, automotive, marine or outdoor pursuits. It’s highly likely that some of these materials could be suitable for use within the furnishings sector and may provide solutions to the ever increasing challenges on chemical use and /or sustainability. “Alongside provoking thought, through this guide I hope to steer members through the myriad of alternative options, looking at the pros and cons of new hardline and softline materials crossing over to our sector, and how far in the future some of these will be readily be accessible.”

One of these precision machines is the Hoffmann MS 35-SF combination double mitre saw and router. As an definitively innovative solution, the Hoffmann MS 35-SF delivers two clean, precision mitre cuts without break-out, to an exact length in one machine cycle. When both pieces are to be joined together or in a frame, then they can be prepared with one or two dovetail slots in precise positions in the cut faces, for jointing with Hoffmann Keys (suitable for workpiece sizes to a maximum of 90 x
90mm). The machine can be fitted with router cutters for processing Hoffmann Key sizes W-1/2/3, making it ideal for cutting profiles for glazing beads, cornices, plinths, etc, in wood, aluminium or plastic at 45°. It can also be used solely as a double mitre saw. High-precision cut The technology, developed by Hoffmann for damping vibrations of the blades, ensures the high-precision cut of the MS 35-SF, and the almost vibration-free running of the machine means that no further work is required prior to joining. “Our Hoffmann MS 35-SF has been extremely reliable and efficient,” explains Ahmarra’s managing director, Tim Doran. “Over the many years of manufacturing, many of our machines have required replacing and updating as expected, but the Hoffmann MS 35-SF has continued to manufacture a precision product
with only routine maintenance required, and we see no reason to replace it in the near future. “This combination machine not only cuts the perfect mitres, but simultaneously routers the dovetail slots for the Hoffmann Keys. Ahmarra has a long relationship with Hoffmann, and our current Hoffmann MS 35-SF has been in operation for over 20 years, and still performs with the expected accuracy and precision that it did the day it was installed,” enthuses Tim. Ahmarra works very closely with architects and interior designers to meet their requirements, allowing flexibility in design while retaining comprehensive fire certification in accordance with Building Regulations. Hoffmann Dovetail Keys are all accredited with FD30/FD60 ratings. Latest technology in design and production As a leading manufacturer of fire door solutions, Ahmarra believes in maintaining the traditions of its craft by preserving the skills and value of time-served, traditional bench joiners, while

utilising the very latest technology in design and production methods. This way, its customers get the best of both worlds. “Our many years’ experience of manufacturing timber doors has led us to produce a number of sector-specific product ranges, to include education, hotel and panelled doors,” points out Tim. “We specialise in working with clients who recognise the importance of developing doorset standards throughout their facilities. Significant client cost savings can be made by eliminating the need to redefine doorsets and ironmongery for each new project. We offer intelligent advice on how to make this process cost effective, simplifying what can be a very complex issue.” A similar principle is held by Hoffmann Machine Company. When specifications such as optimisation, rationalisation and cost savings are essential aspects of a customer’s production, help can be found in its engineering services department. The company can develop a package of measures that will result in a machine, designed to customers’ requirements, that offers efficiency, quality assurance and cost minimisation. 01524 841500 info@hoffmann-uk.com www.hoffmann-uk.com

KWB London reaches new heights with Homag UK KWB London specialises in bespoke kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and concierge fit outs for the London contract residential market. Founded in 2012 by joiner Kevin Behan, KWB’s focus on quality and service has given rise to rapid expansion. Since 2015, the company has been working exclusively with the large tier 1 contractors in London. “We’ve been lucky to be invited to do some prestigious work, perhaps the most notable being Chelsea Waterfront which is our latest project,” explains KWB’s owner, Kevin Behan. He continues: “The gap in the market we fill is producing very bespoke joinery detailing in volume, something the larger outfits struggle to achieve. “As our business began to take off, we realised we had to invest in better, larger CNC machinery. So, in 2016, we visited the Ligna show to research the market. That was a real eye-opener for us, and we were particularly impressed with the breadth and depth of the Homag presentation.” Swayed by price “Despite feeling that Homag’s solutions were technically superior, we made the mistake of being lured by a lower-priced alternative. Unfortunately, we very quickly learnt the error of our ways. The cheaper machine ended up costing us dearly, as we suffered all sorts of issues and downtime which held back our progress. “It was during the first lockdown period in 2020 that it became clear the time was right to make the next major investment in the
business. Throughout the COVID crisis we kept operating, but many of our suppliers didn’t, and this exposed weaknesses in our supply chain. “Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but we weren’t about to make the same mistake again. So when it came to investing in new machinery and software to take us to the next level, we turned to the major players. Yet again, Homag came out on top and so we decided to partner with them.” Specifying the right equipment “Before approaching Homag we analysed our production processes. We highlighted the machinery we felt we needed to create a workshop that would not only produce the right volume and quality for our customers, but also enable us to grow the business. “Our plant wish-list included a beam saw with an automated panel lifter, an edge bander, a vertical CNC drill and a carcass press. Working closely with the Homag team we finalised our order for a Sawteq B-130 with panel lifter, an Edgeteq S-300, a Drillteq V-200 and a Cabteq S-250. “It’s very disruptive, changing your whole 10,500 sq ft workshop with new equipment, but Homag’s installation organisation and planning was excellent. From the moment we placed the order for the kit, they kept us informed of the delivery time frame. True to their word, their engineers installed all the machinery at the end of September, and I must say, they did an amazing job. “The engineers weren’t precious, they just cracked on with installing the new machines.
The Homag Sawteq B-130 beam saw
This enabled us to get on with our day-to-day production with minimal disruption; it really was a seamless process. “Within a week all the machines were commissioned, and the engineers then trained our guys on site. This was supported by online training via Teams prior to the installation. Homag will also be providing refresher courses and advanced training online as and when we need it.” Service and spares “Aside from the quality and performance of the Homag machinery and easy to use woodWOP software, another deciding factor in partnering

with them was the level of service and support they offer. “Homag has its own team of engineers in the UK and consequently is able to provide an exceptional level of service. Not only that, but our research showed they also hold a comprehensive stock of spare parts. So, in the unusual event of a machine issue, they will be able to get us back up and running very quickly, and that is vitally important to us. “Obviously, with five machines and software, this was a significant investment for a £5.5m

business like ours, but again, Homag was able to help. They introduced us to Homag Finance, who made it very easy for us putting together an attractive investment package.” The results speak for themselves “The new equipment has revolutionised our production; we are seeing efficiency gains 30% higher than before, particularly with the automated Sawteq B-130 beam saw and the Edgeteq S-300 edge bander. For example, on the new edge bander, we can change between
tape thicknesses, widths and diameter of radii without having to stop the machine; it’s all done at the touch of a button. “There are hidden benefits too; when we invite potential customers to our facility the image the Homag equipment creates is hugely beneficial. It gives clients confidence that we can achieve the results they want and so it is definitely helping us to clinch contracts. “Our employees too have gained in stature; they see they are in a truly professional environment and consequently have gained a deeper sense of pride in their work,” concludes Kevin Behan. 20 SANDING & ABRASIVES
MB Maschenbau’s Fentech scores for Birmingham Veneers Birmingham Veneers in Tyesley, Birmingham, has a reputation for high-class joinery and doors, working with some very esteemed clients and projects across the UK. Birmingham Veneers approached Dean Grimbley of John Penny Woodworking Machinery to find out more about its MB machine range and its unique features. Birmingham Veneers has been supplying factoryfinished doorsets and bespoke joinery for years, and has tried several brush sanders in the past. Its experience of brush-sanding machines with smalldiameter heads was that the sanding paper life was poor, and it was difficult to achieve a quality finish on harder materials. Following discussions with Dean Grimbley from John Penny Woodworking Machinery, the Roba Fentech fully-automated sanding machine – manufactured by MB Maschinenbau – was suggested as an ideal solution for Birmingham Veneers’ requirements. The Roba Fentech carries large, 400mm-diameter oscillating sanding heads, putting more sanding paper in contact with the workpiece – and the oscillation of the sanding heads over the workpiece prevent wear in one area, thus ensuring the quality of the finish. For Birmingham Veneers, the Fentech’s main unique feature was the way the machine could deal with small batches. The parts are laser-scanned on entry to the machine with the shape measured – the machine sets everything for the profile automatically from this data. The machine sets almost instantaneously, with the parts being transported through the machine on a vacuum transport belt. The operator has the choice A program-controlled swivel axis brings the top sanding unit in position
of working in one-man operation with components returned through the machine, or, for higher capacity, an operator can stack at the outfeed of the machine. This was enough of an incentive for Birmingham Veneers to conduct sanding trails and visit MB Maschinenbau at its headquarters in Herford, Germany, for a demonstration – and, shortly after that convincing visit, an order was placed. Birmingham Veneers has now had the MB Fentech

Kündig – the sanding Master Established in 1945, Kündig is widely recognised as one of the most experienced and highestquality manufacturers of wide-belt and edge-sanding machinery. Kündig has two manufacturing plants: one in Switzerland, which is also its headquarters and where the R&D and special projects are developed; the other in Gotha, Germany, where the production of the standard wide-belt and edgesanding machinery takes place. In today’s market, where manufacturers are facing all sorts of different challenges in generating the right surface finish, Kündig has the experience to respond, and to offer a solution to what is seen by many as near impossible. Where first impressions count, manufacturers strive to achieve that ‘something special’ when it comes to surface finishing, and this is exactly why some of the world’s leading manufacturers of grand pianos have researched the market and commissioned Kündig to produce sanding machines to generate a perfectly flat surface and give intermediary sanding, building up to a high-gloss finish where any imperfection would stand out and not be accepted.

Kündig’s impressive Master – working width of 1350 mm and is equipped with a calibration roller as well as a fine sanding pad unit and features the proven, robust construction that guarantees decades of high sanding precisio
Other companies which have faced challenges have needed sanding accuracy to +/- 0.02mm, and turned to Kündig to meet the tight tolerances for final product. These machines are typically used in the automotive industry, but have also been installed for manufacturers looking to calibrate brake discs for commercial aircraft, insulation materials, plastics, etc. Of course, the more familiar application for Kündig is in the woodworking industry, where its fixed-bed design has proven to give longterm accuracy – being fixed to the machine frame, with a sanding group that raises and lowers. This system has proven to be especially beneficial for calibrating heavy components – typically fire doors, where the fixed bed cannot move despite the weight of the door or the amount of pressure generated during sanding. This fixed-bed system is also a huge benefit for veneer sanding, where veneer-cutting technology has increased, making the thickness of veneers smaller and smaller, hence making sanding accuracy more important than ever.
To cater for a wider part of the market, Kündig recently celebrated its 75th anniversary with the introduction of the new Kündig Master, which offers an ‘out-of-the-box’ solution. The idea behind it was to produce a more cost-effective machine while still keeping to all the traditional values associated with Kündig. The machine is produced in the same factory as the Premium, Brilliant and Perfect models, but is manufactured to a standard configuration to allow serial production, hence reducing the costs to produce. The Master has a generous 1350mm working width, two sanding heads – first a contact roller, followed by a finishing pad, which is available for solid wood or as a segmented pad for sanding veneers. The Brilliant series of machines is aimed at those looking to achieve the highest possible quality of surface finish. By simply placing the abrasive at a 10° angle eradicates the wavy scratch pattern inherently shown on traditionalstyle sanding machines. These machines are available in widths of 1100, 1350 and 1600mm
as standard, and as either single- or multi-head machines. In recent times, Kündig has seen a substantial increase in the demand for purpose-made machines throughout different industries. Typical of this is a recent delivery to a company which wanted a machine to calibrate five-piece doors ready to go straight to spraying, to then denib and also have the possibility of creating a rustic-style surface with a bandsaw finish. The answer was a four-head sanding machine, having contact roller, oblique sanding pad and cross belt to sand the rails – or alternatively using a 16-grit belt to create the rustic surface, followed by a carousel brush unit to sand into the profiles and soften the edges. Despite the situation last year, Kündig has seen growth in sales, both in the UK and in other markets, and, in other news, will be shortly relocating to offer better demonstration facilities … more to follow. 0845 833 0565 www.kündig.com

Being itself a family business, the company is also acutely aware of the current situation regarding the COVID-19 virus situation. Bibielle UK sales director, Tom Wright, explains: “I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you of the challenging situation our country – and the world at large –
is currently facing. However, as a family-owned independent business, and being able to react positively in difficult times, I think it is important to spread news that not all is bad and that we are ensuring we continue to support and supply the UK like we have done for the past 20 years. “With this in mind, we have significantly invested financially in raw material and finish stock of our abrasive products,” says Tom. “This has taken our normal 3-4 month stock-holding to around 6-7 months, which in turn will ensure that our customers’ businesses can continue to run like normal, despite the current problems we are all facing. “Our passion has always been about providing a great service along with a great performing product. However, this has no meaning if the health of the Bibielle UK team is suffering. We have also implemented extensive bacteriafighting agents throughout the company and are carrying-out regular checks on staff to ensure this is being carried out. “I will leave you with a final message that should you have problems with stock, please get in touch and we will try our utmost to help. This is a difficult time for us all, let alone the additional pressures of trying to keep your business running and customers happy. I sincerely hope that with the plans we have carried out, we can be a valued supplier to your operation not only today, but in the very distant future.” 0116 258 1900 sales@bibielle.co.uk www.bibielle.co.uk

The year has started with many challenges, to say the least, states adhesives specialist Kenyon – Covid-19 and lockdown, raw materials in short supply globally, with several suppliers declaring force majeure, shortages of ships, containers and trailers, and price increases filtering down the supply chains. For example, in recent months there have been unprecedented price increases for cardboard, predominantly driven by increased demand for packaging used for online shopping sales. These may be turbulent times, with choppy waters ahead, but Kenyon says it is in a prime position to deliver, nonetheless …
Adhesive supplier that delivers
In these strange times, supply chain stability is a massively important factor that companies are looking for, states Kenyon, and having a reliable adhesive supplier which delivers on time ticks those all-important stability boxes. “The adhesives sector has faced, and indeed continues to face, many challenges during these difficult times,” says James Hamilton, Kenyon’s UK sales manager (pictured right). “Being Henkel Premium Partners, and therefore backed by a global adhesive giant, Kenyon’s are in the position to be able to guarantee UK stockholding across three warehouses, so that they are ready to keep you gluing. No lead times – goods delivered when they are needed – the time and effort put in to ensure the customer achieves the best solution! “Kenyon’s have always based their business around service and support, which has made us a key go-to company for a reliable supply of high-quality woodworking adhesives across all technologies.” As James explains: “We all understand that
production lines rely on delivery dates, which has been highlighted again recently by the impacts of Brexit and Covid-19, and increases in production demands. “It is through our continued investments and stockholdings that we have been able to meet these demands and continue a guaranteed supply of products to our customers. This has emphasised the importance of our next-day delivery service and technical support, which has allowed companies to continue producing and have the assurances they need in such difficult times. The bond between Kenyon’s and Henkel keeps getting stronger “Delivery is important, very important, but it has to be backed up with a quality adhesive product, technical support, advice and adhesive problems solved,” says James. “There’s little point in delivering the products on time if the adhesive doesn’t do the job it’s required to do! Kenyon’s tick all the boxes, and on top of that are
very competitive on price. “However, in these current unprecedented times, more and more often the delivered price doesn’t always appear to be the dominant deal-breaker. The importance has switched to the ability to deliver the right product at the right time. Having stock available and on-time delivery now outweighs a few pence a kilo saving. It’s a proven fact – just ask any customer whose production line has been halted. “Kenyon’s are Henkel Premium Partners for furniture and building component adhesives. These markets are supplied under the industryleading brand names Technomelt and Aquence, which are recognised for quality and proven performance – thousands of customers using Henkel can’t be wrong! “Henkel have an adhesive for your gluing application – edgebanding, profile wrapping, flat lamination, wood assembly, 3D thermoforming, edge sealing, sandwich panel lamination and foam bonding – your application is glued!” www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Keeping Britain bonded since 1979 “Kenyon’s are challenged on a daily basis to find the answer to various adhesive problems and new applications,” explains James Hamilton, Kenyon’s UK sales manager (pictured). “You will be amazed at what we have been asked to bond, and the majority of the time we have surprised ourselves by providing the answer to some very difficult adhesive problems.” As manufacturers seek to find new and innovative materials to create exciting new products and designs, adhesives also move forward. The adhesive world is changing, and new products are coming to the market, many with the environment at the forefront – products such as Henkel Technomelt PUR 270-9ME Microemission PUR hotmelt adhesive for edgebanding, and Henkel Aquence KL 071/2 Formaldehyde-free D3 PVA adhesive for laminating, veneering and general assembly. Reduce environmental impact and improve the micro-climate with Henkel “These adhesives from Henkel really are the future for our customers and the planet,” says James. “We have your application glued, and the environmental impact reduced. So why not improve your micro-climate at the same time as improving your production, and help reduce your carbon footprint on the environment? “Henkel has been taking a visionary approach
to supporting environmental and social progress. They recognise the potential impact they can have by developing sustainable innovations. Henkel products and technologies are continuously being challenged and developed to further support their sustainable development and reduce the impact on the environment. “Environment and production pressures demanding faster edgebanding speeds saw the launch of Henkel Technomelt PUR 270/5 ME, delivering microemission and clean processing on very high machine speeds of up to 80m/ min, delivering the highest bond strength on all common edgeband materials – increase production, while helping the environment. Henkel adhesives are the future for Kenyon’s customers and the planet “These innovative products are the result of several years of research from Henkel’s product development team, and are proving a preferred choice with customers, bringing significant cost savings, helping the environment and reducing energy consumption,” concludes James. 0161 627 1001 salesteam@kenyon-group.co.uk www.kenyon-group.co.uk Kenyon Group is pleased to be supporting Guide Dogs for the Blind as its chosen charity for 2021

32 FINANCE
Close Brothers Asset Finance, here to support SMEs on the road to recovery While the end of the pandemic may not be fully in sight, there are signs the economy is taking its first tentative steps towards recovery, with the Bank of England suggesting it may even be quicker than forecast. And as the recovery takes hold over the coming months, ensuring consistent cashflow takes on even more importance. There are ways and means of doing this, including using your physical business assets to prove their worth in ways you may not have thought possible. For many years, during good times and bad, business owners have increasingly turned to asset finance to help them maintain cashflow. But what is asset finance? In short, it’s an alternative form of funding used by businesses to obtain the equipment they need to grow or access much-needed cash. Asset finance makes the otherwise unaffordable affordable because it gives businesses access to the equipment they need without incurring the cash flow disadvantage of an outright purchase. Agreements can also be customised to the business’s needs, with flexibility on both the term and repayment schedule. There are various products that come under the broad umbrella of asset finance with one of the key ones being Refinancing or capital release, as it’s also known; it’s a proven way to make your assets work for you and release cash back into the business. It’s pretty straightforward and works by the finance company purchasing the asset and financing it back to you, with repayments calculated in line with the income the asset is expected to generate; at the end of the refinance term, you own the asset.
Other common examples of asset finance products are: • Hire Purchase (HP) allows the customer to buy the equipment on credit. The finance company purchases the asset on behalf of the customer and owns the asset until the final instalment is paid, at which point the customer is given the option to buy it • Finance lease: The full value of the equipment is repaid to the finance company, plus interest,
over the lease period. At the end of the term, the company can choose to: – continue to use the asset by entering a secondary rental period – sell the asset and keep a portion of the income from the sale – return it • Operating lease: similar to a Finance Lease, an Operating Lease allows you to rent the asset from us while you need it. The key difference between the two is that an Operating Lease is only for part of the asset’s useful life. This means you pay a reduced rental because the cost is based on the difference between the asset’s original purchase price and its residual value at the end of the agreement. Why Close Brothers Asset Finance? We are the largest, most successful and longest-established asset finance funder in the UK with over 30 years’ experience working with SMEs through all economic cycles – the fact is, there’s very little we haven’t seen or experienced, although the current crisis is proving to be the exception to the rule. The critical first step was to invest in a new three-axis CNC machine from Felder UK, and Staircon stair design and production software It took just four months from the initial conversations with Elecosoft and Felder to the CAM software and machine being deployed and production starting, with only two days required on-site for implementation, testing, and to fully train the team. “Prior to using Staircon, everything was designed by hand,” explains GL Joinery’s CEO, Gary Lamming. “And even then, we need to buy in more complicated staircases. “Now we can do everything in-house, and the turnaround time is much quicker – before Staircon we were fitting around 3-4 staircases per week. Now we’re fitting 15. We can finally keep pace with demand!” Speeding up the design and manufacturing process One key reason for GL Joinery’s increased capacity is the rate at which Gary and his team can design staircases. Rather than taking 3-5 hours to draw each staircase by hand, Staircon can plan designs in 2D or visualise them in 3D in just 20 minutes – providing an immediate, clear view of what the finished product will look like. Production processes are also much quicker with Staircon. It now takes one day to cut out and make an oak staircase – more than a week less than the previous average turnaround time. Expanding the limits of staircase design Investing in Staircon has enabled GL Joinery to expand its product range, as well as producing standard staircases cost-effectively. Gary and his team can custom-make even the most
complicated staircase designs, bringing in new, high-end projects. “The quality of the products we’re producing speaks for itself,” Gary notes. “We get three referrals for every job that we do.” The only way is up After taking such a huge leap forward in its business operations in 2020, GL Joinery is keen to maintain the pace of improvement in 2021. The company has ordered a 5-axis CNC machine to facilitate new design features such as curved handrails.
Additionally, GL Joinery aims to integrate Staircon into its website, to launch a ‘design your own staircase’ service. “We want to put the power into customers’ hands,” Gary concludes. Once customers have perfected their online design, Staircon software will generate a production drawing and price to complete their order. The manufacturing team will then cut out and ship all components for assembly on-site – another revenue stream to add to the tidal wave of opportunities that Staircon is creating for GL Joinery. www.elecosoft.com
Speed up your design and production process with Staircon - Design stair shapes quickly and easily, from standard to complex. - Let your customer see the staircase they envision in 3D view. - Send your designs to CNC output at the touch of a button. “Staircon has completely changed our scale of production.” Gary Lamming, GL Joinery Find out how Staircon can help you: elecosoft.com/staircon elecosoft.com | info@elecosoft.com

Innovative fittings and components from Titus Titus’ furniture hardware solutions have been improving homes around the world for decades. They increase the quality and facilitate RTA furniture, giving significant competitive advantage to manufacturers and improving the consumer experience. The most popular components are the Quickfit TL5 Full Metal Jacket dowel, which provides optimal strength and reduces home assembly time by up to -50%, and the T-type concealed hinge, which has a tool-free 3Way snap-on mounting. The T-type hinges, with integrated soft closing, are suitable for use on a wide range of doors with thicknesses up to 34mm. Their unique 3way snap-on mounting system makes them exceptionally easy to install, even on large, heavy doors with multiple hinges. The range has recently been extended to include pie-cut (bi-fold) hinges for corner cabinets, which fit standard drilling patterns and feature convenient ‘double-lock’ opening. This means users can either open just one door leaf to get access into the cabinet interior, or they can fully open the doors by locking the hinge cup, making the door leaves work as one. The innovative Quickfit TL5 Full Metal Jacket dowels provide strong, reliable joints in all types of wooden materials, including MDF, chipboard and solid wood. This means that it is no longer necessary to use different dowels for different materials. In addition, the new dowels offer fast, tool-free insertion, reducing assembly time by up to -50% for home-assembled furniture. Alternatively, for maximum efficiency in volume production applications, they can be inserted automatically using Titus FastFit machines.
To complement its hardware range, Titus offers new TeraBlack (Titus Enhanced Resistance Application) versions with a darkgrey, non-reflective finish, that is not only visually appealing but also highly resistant to corrosion. TeraBlack products fully meet the requirements of designers and consumers looking for unobtrusive yet attractive cabinet hardware. The product range includes new versions of the T-type hinges, TL5 Full Metal Jacket dowels, shelf supports and push latches. To complement its extensive range of fittings, connectors and components, Titus offers support and advice for manufacturers of bespoke and high-end kitchen cabinets and
furniture. The team at Titus is always ready to discuss and develop solutions for even the most discerning manufacturers. Titus is a leading component manufacturer, specialising in the development and production of cabinet hardware, hydraulic dampers and automated assembly systems. Häfele UK on how to maximise demand for home improvements As consumers spend more time in their homes, their desire to improve the spaces they live and often work in are increasing too. As a result, demand for tradespeople is unprecedented, with joiners and carpenters seeing an estimated 66% rise in jobs versus the 12 months previous. While this is great news, it does bring challenges with how to structure jobs, manage enquiries and of course, complete as much work as possible to ride the surge, while maintaining quality standards. To maximise the opportunity that this demand for home improvements presents, joiners should turn to manufacturers who are on hand to help in a number of ways. Natalie Davenport, head of marketing at Häfele UK explains. Speed vs efficiency Innovative time saving products are just one way that manufacturers can help joiners and furniture manufacturers maximise
their workload. Häfele has focused on making furniture construction as tool-free as possible. An example of this is Ixconnect CC 8/5/30, a claw connector for wooden drawers that can be used without dowels. Because it has an innovative claw, it compacts the chips in the front panels of wooden drawers for quick fixing of panels and sides over 12 mm. When combined with a rear panel connector (Ixconnect RPC D 5/24) that clamps the rear panel with the side walls, Ixconnect CC 8/5/30 reduces the number of drill holes needed, dramatically cutting down assembly time and giving complete precision. It’s also entirely concealed once in place. While a simple piece of hardware, products like Ixconnect make a big difference. In fact, it halves the number of holes required and can reduce assembly time by up to 70%
Häfele’s App controlled Loox lighting adds a wow factor

Time saving services Beyond time saving products, leading manufacturers are also creating services that reduce a lot of the leg work for joiners. During the pandemic for example, we’ve extended Häfele to Order, a bespoke service which allows users to specify products to exact size, quantity and finish. While customers regularly use this service for items such as wardrobe rails or sliding door gear, joiners can now use Häfele to Order for bespoke timber drawers too. Crafting beautiful, handmade bespoke timber drawers takes skill, care, attention, and time, but sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day.
Through the service, customers can order handmade, solid timber drawers personalised to their needs and complete with full dovetail joints, in up to a two-week turnaround. The Häfele bespoke timber drawer service is completely made to order, meaning customers can tailor their requirements against a long list of design and personalisation options. These include choice of timber, finish and size along with shaped sides - flat or stepped top - and notching and drilling for runners. Creating the wow factor A similar approach can also be taken to lighting. Loox by Häfele has been developed specifically for the furniture industry. A simple, modular plug and play system, it can be easily incorporated it into designs to create that all important wow factor. App controlled, it can also be adjusted for different times of the day and lighting conditions, changing the atmosphere as the customer likes at the click of a button. As well as being easy to fit, furniture lighting schemes can be easy to design too. Häfele offers a free of charge Lighting Design Service. Simply complete an online form with basic information and upload a floor plan, and within 10 days, the company’s team of lighting consultants will return a tailored specification. Usefully, the Lighting Design Service can also be paired with Häfele to Order, making Loox probably the easiest furniture lighting range install in the UK market. www.hafele.co.uk

Record demand for zero-joint tech and online board matching With furniture design and production professionals spending more time online over the past nine months, Rehau has reported an upsurge in usage of its industry-leading board matching guide. This is mirrored by a similar increase in demand for more hygienic solutions, and subsequent interest in its zerojoint edgebanding technology. Recent research conducted by Ikea for its Big Home Reboot report found that the pandemic has put health and wellbeing at the front of people’s minds, and that the homes of the future will need to be ready for the next health crisis. As the industry aims to digest a plethora of reports surrounding the health of the nation’s homes, Rehau’s zero-joint technology is growing in demand, due to its hygienic approach. Polymer zero-joint edgebanding eliminates the use of glue, resulting in a much more hygienic, easily cleanable product. There are a number of ways in which a zerojoint finish can be achieved – via laser, hot air, or near infra-red (NIR). Rehau has invested significantly to ensure its Raukantex range of edgebanding is compatible with all methods
of application. Scott Williams, national sales manager for the Rehau Furniture Solutions division, explains: “Zero-joint technology is not new, and it has been a popular innovation for many industry professionals for quite some time. But what we are seeing now is more SME joiners, interior designers, fitters and kitchen/bathroom manufacturers showing interest in this type of technology because of the jointless, clean finish achieved. “The absence of a glue line where the edging meets the board prevents the build-up of dirt or bacteria, creating a seamless hygienic surface.” At kbb Birmingham 2020, Rehau announced a new strategy to support SMEs across the sector with more business support online. Its successful board-matching service is one such tool it has been enhancing to help businesses in this uncertain economic climate. As such, the business has seen a significant increase in usage of the online tool. The online board matching service contains matches to all leading board manufacturer collections, and is one of the most
comprehensive standard stock ranges available in Europe. The collection includes options for solid colour, decorative design, mirror gloss, extreme matt, real glass effect, translucent, 3D, metallic look and real wood veneer. New additions to the range are added all the time, including an Extreme Matt collection called Noble Matt and Rauvisio Noir – both of which have been introduced to meet the trend for ultramatt surfaces. Having access to a wide range of materials allows for more creativity, and Rehau has noticed more daring matches being made – such as the Raukantex Magic 2, which includes edgebanding with real metallic surfaces that have brass and copper effects. Scott adds: “Tools like this are invaluable to our industry right now. We have invested heavily to consider every possibility when it comes to board matching, so it’s encouraging to see that it’s helping the market. We’ve got lots more up our sleeves to help this portion of the market excel as we come out of lockdown, so watch this space!” www.rehau.com

Easy-to-use shredder more than up to the challenge The Angry Beaver wood shredder is built in Britain by Welmac UK, at the company’s premises near Lincoln. The shredder has been designed to make it easy to use, and to work on for maintenance. Welmac UK MD Andrew Balfe introduces the company’s new wood shredder: “Our new manually fed Welmac pallet shredder has been designed for processing pallets and offcuts of timber to produce a G30- and G50-specification wood chip. Importantly, we wanted to utilise as many local companies as we could in the production of the wood shredder. It will cope with full-size 1200 x 1200mm pallets, timber offcuts and worktops. “With health and safety in mind, there are two E-stop buttons fitted to the top of the hopper and a third on the control panel. The hopper has an access door to the rotor, with a safety cut-out plug you have to disconnect to open the door, and there is also a safety cut-out plug on the guard for the drive belt, which you will have to remove for maintenance of the drive belt. The control panel is very straightforward and easy to understand and operate. “The pallet shredder is constructed from a heavy-duty, steel-framed platform and heavyduty box section, and has been welded to the bottom frame so it can be picked up from the rear or the side of the machine with a forklift truck to move it around if required. “The rotor is 250mm in diameter and 1300mm in length, with 19 reversible cutting tips which, should the need arise, are easy to change, with a single bolt on each tip. The rotor is mounted on 90mm pedestal bearings and is powered by a 22kW electric motor through a banded 4V drivebelt to a 5:1 reduction gearbox. “The pallets and offcuts are broken down by 19 cutting tips on the rotor that pass through a rear comb, then the woodchips gets broken down further when it has to pass through a screen under the rotor. Screen sizes available are 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40mm, so operators can achieve the desired end product for each application. The woodchips then fall onto a conveyor belt, which will then discharge into 1m3 bags. A powerful, rare-earth magnetic roller is fitted to the conveyor to separate the nails from the woodchips. “With the high-torque, slow-speed rotor, there is minimal dust created. The shredder is also fitted with a stress-control system which will
automatically reverse if the rotor is overloaded. “The conveyor is high enough to load into ton bags or a fork tuck tine tipping skip. We also supply a 5m-long conveyor on wheels, which can be used at a full 180° from the discharge end of the wood shredder. This conveyor can be plugged in and worked from the control panel on the shredder. With this 5m conveyor, you can discharge into roll-on, roll-off skips, or into a trailer for moving the woodchip to another site. “A set of steps is also supplied for easy access for loading pallets and wood offcuts into the
hopper of the wood shredder. The steps have an aluminium tread plate fitted for safety. The machine can also be used as a standalone unit or be incorporated into a production line,” concludes Andrew. The Angry Beaver wood shredder is now a tried-and-tested model, with over 30 units out working in the UK and further afield in Finland, Lithuania and Ireland – and the company is actively looking for dealers throughout Europe. +44 (0)1400 272475 welmacuk@btconnect.com

Festool masterpieces undergo decisive improvements Festool has provided some of the best plunge-cut saws on the market for many years, and the German manufacturer has continued to make decisive improvements to its masterpieces – from now on, the plunge-cut saws will be able to saw twice as fast, and the TSC 55 K cordless plunge-cut saw will be available with unique KickbackStop.
The new TSC 55 K and TS 55 F plunge-cut saws from Festool
“Dangerous kickbacks will be a thing of the past with our new cordless plunge-cut saw, as we have made it even safer with the new unique KickbackStop”, explains Boris Seyfried, product manager at Festool. “Kickback is the most common cause of serious injuries when using a plunge-cut saw. “Safety is a very important topic for us. Should kickback occur when sawing and plunging into the workpiece, our intelligent KickbackStop technology ensures that the saw blade in our cordless plunge-cut saw stops in the blink of an eye. This stops the backwards motion of the saw, which not only protects the workpiece but also reduces the risk of injury to a minimum.” “In the future, thanks to our new sawblade generation, and concentrated torque provided by the new TSC 55 K, you can work up to twice as fast – with an extended battery range. The result means maximum cutting performance, combined with perfect cutting quality. “Unfortunately, there is still a tendency to think
that cordless saws cannot deliver the same performance. This is not the case with our new cordless plunge-cut saw. There is no noticeable difference, because the combination of the latest-generation of brushless EC-TEC motor technology and the dual-battery system (2 x 18V) makes our new TSC as impressively powerful as a mains-powered tool – whilst providing full mobility”, says Boris, pointing out that the latest sawblade generation also ensures both fast work progress and precise cutting quality. The masterpiece, decisively improved – the new corded TS 55 F is now twice as fast “Our plunge-cut saws have always stood out with their absolute precision cuts, maximum power and extreme durability,” Boris continues. “The reliability and cutting quality remain unchanged, but the working speed is unprecedented – now the new TS 55 F will be able to saw up to twice as fast. “With their reduced cutting width, new teeth
shapes and new carbide saw teeth, the new sawblades, which are perfectly designed for our plunge-cut saws, ensure a high degree of cutting quality and extended service life – while maintaining a consistent cutting quality.” For optimal results, the saw system is rounded off with smart system accessories such as guide rails, angle stops and a saw table, and tried-andtested details such as a splinter guard and dust extraction system, both perfectly suited to the tool. “Our new plunge-cut saws deliver excellent work results and a top-class sawing system – for every challenge,” says Boris. The new TSC 55 K cordless plunge-cut saw and the equally new TPC cordless percussion drill are an unbeatable pairing in any work situation, states Festool – whether being used for sawing or screwdriving. The new plunge-cut saws and sawblades will be available at specialist retailers from April. www.festool.co.uk

A staircase is often the best introduction to a home – if not the first piece of decor that attracts attention as soon as one enters a house. This is why it is essential for manufacturers, architects and designers involved in the production of staircases to pay close attention to every detail, and create a product that is as ‘custom-designed’ as possible and fully reflects a customer’s personality, and their practical and decorative preferences. In response to these needs, SCM offers an integrated solution for the production of staircases. This involves a cell for the nesting cut, consisting of an automatic Flextore EL magazine integrated with two Accord 30 NST machining centres

>> thickness of no more than 3mm, depending on the material. The core of the cell is the three-axis Flexstore EL automatic magazine, which guarantees a considerable increase in productivity and a significant reduction in the cost of running the raw materials magazine. The Maestro Active Store software plays a dual role of man-machine interface for the Flexstore automatic storage, as well as acting as supervisor to the cutting cell, allowing control to be centralised and simplified. Furthermore, automatic panel labelling is done in this area, in accordance with the cutting diagram subsequently carried out by the operating machines. This operation is extremely important, as it means the panel can be constantly tracked during the integrated automatic processes, and the work programs associated with each element can

Of the two Accord 30 NST machining centres, the first one is mainly used to manufacture the risers and steps, while the second is used for the stair strings on the staircases and landings. By maintaining the manual loading function, special one-off pieces can also be machined. The main advantages of this solution are high-powered routing and intelligent programming, thanks to the Maestro software suite. This results in impressive
performance in terms of speed, as well as quality and implementation accuracy. The main advantage of the cell lies in its modularity and scalability – indeed, even though each of the two machining centres are assigned to specific machining jobs, just one of them can be used if there is a reduced production capacity requirement. Equally, if there is a fault on one of the two machining centres, this solution ensures that production does not stop completely but that it continues on the other one.
Celaschi double squaring line This line allows customers to trim lengthways and outline the risers and treads previously created. It consists of a manually powered automatic loading system, a longitudinal Celaschi P60 double squaring machine for profiling the long sides, a Celaschi TR 90 automatic transport system, a second transversal Celaschi P60 to trim and square the short sides, and unloading rollers. The contribution from Maestro Active Watch software is also important for the supervision and control of the entire squaring line, which means program management can be optimised and simplified – as well as the worklists, machining commands and parameters, the process implementation, and all the work involved in diagnostics. www.scmgroup.com

Second woodwaste heater for timber manufacturer as it expands into new premises The owner of a Worcestershire export company has purchased a second woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology because the investment in the first heater delivered everything promised in helping to reduce operational expenses. Rob Johnston, MD of IM Export Services in Redditch, manufactures ISPM export-grade timber products
including bespoke timber cases, crates and pallets. The business purchased its first woodwaste heater around 10 years ago from Wood Waste Technology. At the time, the business was operating from its 3500ft2 premises, and the heater helped save money on the disposal of waste wood while also providing the unit with free heating.
As the business went from strength to strength and continued to grow, it needed to relocate to larger premises to incorporate all the manufacturing, packing and dry-storage aspects of its business. The original woodwaste heater was relocated to the new building, and an additional heater, a WT15, was purchased to help heat the new 16000ft2.
As Rob explains: “We generate waste wood as part of our dayto-day business operations, so it makes sense to convert this into free heating to warm the industrial unit for our 30 employees. It’s such a large space, with very high ceilings, I dread to think how much it would cost to heat if we had to pay for it. “Fortunately, the two woodwaste heaters – as we have one at each end of the workshop – create a perfect workshop temperature. We’re delighted with our purchases. The heaters do everything we were promised they would, so have been a great investment. If we ever needed another, I’d be straight on the phone to Wood Waste Technology.” Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology, says: “We’re thrilled that IM Export got back in touch when they moved to larger premises. We’re proud to say that most of our business comes from client recommendations, as well as from existing customers needing additional units as a result of business growth. We’re also delighted that every woodwaste heater ever sold by us is still in operation today.” WWT offers a full range of woodwaste heaters, from small, hand-fired units to larger, fullyautomatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of woodwaste heater, and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, the company is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk www.putzmaus.co.uk

AXYZ router proves a class act at leading furniture manufacturer The latest AXYZ Infinite multi-purpose CNC combined routing/knife-cutting system from Telford-based AAG has recently been installed at one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of furniture and associated equipment supplied to the educational sector. The perceived higher performance capabilities and important new machining enhancements provided by Infinite were considered to be pivotal to the rapid business growth and commensurate increased productivity levels at the County Antrim, Northern Ireland-based Kindercraft.
The company employs mainly melamine-faced veneered MDF and birch plywood to manufacture a wide range of handcrafted, highend products. These include both standard and bespoke classroom desks, chairs and tables (including those covering special needs requirements), general storage, fitted washroom and kitchen units, computer suites and reception area furniture. The company’s in-house design service works closely with school equipment specification and
purchasing authorities in selecting products considered most appropriate for the different pupil age groups to be accommodated. These include products in a wide choice of different sizes, shapes and colours, enabling the creation of highly individualistic design themes. Installation of the AXYZ Infinite could be described as the apogee in a long-running and highly successful business partnership forged between AAG and Kindercraft.
In 2002, the company installed an AXYZ 4008 twin-head router to undertake work previously carried out manually. This was followed in 2006 by a need to upgrade to and replace with the larger-format AXYZ 6010 router, in order to meet an increased customer demand, culminating in 2020 with the addition of the latest AXYZ Infinite 6010 machine (incorporating a seven-station Automatic Tool Change system for work requiring multiple tools) that was necessary due to a further exponential increase in production capacity that a single machine simply could not handle. The AXYZ Infinite can be configured with a choice of single, dual or triple routing/ cutting heads to accommodate varying application requirements. It is available in a choice of sizes and incorporates an expandable processing bed area of up to 3251mm in width by an impressive 15.24m in length. Key design features include the familiar solid steel frame construction to withstand the most vigorous machine operation likely to be encountered, and an aluminium t-slot vacuum material hold-down facility. These are supplemented with a new carriage design to enable easier routine machine maintenance and the installation of future machine upgrades, an ultra-efficient dust-extraction unit for enhanced machine performance, and a new misting system to provide improved machine cooling and lubrication. Other optional production enhancements include the AVS (AXYZ Vision System) for optimum routing/cutting precision, and the latest helical rack-and-pinion drive system. This incorporates a multi-teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, resulting in faster material throughput and reduced wastage and ultimately a longer-thannormal machine life. 01952 291600 www.axyz.co.uk

Salvamac – solid, simple and safe cutting Christian Salvador comments on the presentation of Salvamac’s Q1 2021 results: “The event of our anniversary in March 2021 has been the occasion not only to confirm our choices, show our machines, share our ideas and meet our partners (mainly virtually) as we have done in the past and how we will do in the future, but also to celebrate our results, that are positively surprising us every month.” Ziemowit Dolkowski, co-founder of Salvamac, says: “Our growth has been more than +50% in recent months, and it was a success that we really did not expect – a success that has
not only concerned traditional and already consolidated products, but the entire production range, and which has led us to the creation of something greater … Salvamac Group.” Salvamac is the result of over 20 years of experience built by its founding partners, Christian Salvador and Ziemowit Dolkowski, who continue to invest their strong passion and deep knowledge for the woodworking machinery sector. “All this, together with a continuous analysis of the reference market, has allowed us to create a network of contacts and skills, thus proposing
our business as an ideal partner for those working in the woodworking sector,” Ziemowit continues. Salvamac continues to move forward in its social and ethical approach to production and innovation, by creating a group based on the support of four production units in three countries –Italy, Poland and Turkey – to obtain a winning mix of Italian heads and hearts with the dynamics, advantages and competences of various other nations, all in a constant state of evolution. From this perspective, the Salvamac Group
63
multiplies itself exponentially through three departments: the cross-cutting part, specialised in the cutting and optimisation of wood; the Air&Painting department, where the suction, air filtration and wood painting systems find a reference point; and the brand-new Salvamac Selection, an innovation that represents the natural evolution of the Salvamac project. Its primary products (and best known in UK) are the upcut saws, equipped with devices that make them true cutting centres – the Classic cutting saws characterised by Salvamac’s philosophy. Christian continues: “Our professional crosscutting saws are solid, resistant, compact. We build them with high-quality materials and complete them with functional options to optimise performance and efficiency. “But not only solidity – we firmly believe that safety comes first. With our double-button device that is placed in an ergonomic position, and with the protection on the blade, you can work safely – we take care of the precautions. “Finally, we want to make the job easy, and therefore offer easy-to-use woodworking machines. You have just to choose the stop and
press the two buttons to start the cutting cycle, without any adjustment.” Salvamac’s semi-automatic cutting saws, principally the Classic 40, 50 and 60 models, require limited investment but are a decisive step towards faster, safer and more efficient production. “It is a coherent catalogue to which it is possible to add new aggregates that significantly increase the performance of these undoubtedly simple machines,” explains Christian, “also by means of intelligent loading and unloading systems, as well as automations that allow even small businesses or sophisticated craftsmen to move towards a completely new perspective. “ Among the aggregates recently launched by Salvamac is the Salvastop measuring-stop device, a system that electronically manages the stopping and positioning of the boards or profiles to be cut, regardless of the material, with high speed and absolute precision, thanks to a state-of-the-art brushless electronic motor. “Furthermore, the mechanical system has been designed not to require maintenance over time, while ensuring a high degree of robustness and precision.”
Salvastop can be installed on the Classic 40, Classic 50 and Classic 60 models, transforming previously entry-level models into semi-automatic cutting centres, which can be interfaced with the company’s management software (it should be noted that the Salvastop can also be installed on other machines, adapting them to all those applications where it is necessary to provide measuring and cutting operations in an extremely effective way). Ziemowit continues: “We have worked hard to create the exclusive software very easy to use, thanks to immediately understandable and effective, complete, powerful and flexible graphics. “It includes five different sections and two different modes, stop or push. Also, it has a 7in touchscreen in an optimum position for reading and programming – not forgetting the included and installed internet teleservice software. “Due to an innovative technological concept, we have also created a new anodised aluminium beam section of 100 × 100mm, reinforced and with a large thickness to the profile edge.” This beam has three sides, with groves to adapt and install the structure. One side is a flat fence, to favour the sliding of the wood on the guide, so avoid wear and dust problems. Thanks to the scale of this solution, the pusher carriage reaches a movement speed of up to 60m/min. The transmission system has a 32mm wide-toothed belt, with high-precision internal steel cables, ensuring a wide capacity and a very high positioning tolerance. The machined steel heads are robust and independent, designed to have a long life, highly reliable and precise, while the compact Servo Drive electronic motor guarantees simplicity, reliability, durability and efficiency. With this innovative technology, customers can manage closed-loop positioning, checking the position at any time – even in case of heavy efforts and accidental external pressure. The motor, which is mounted in a pulling position, has a power of 11Nm, and the electrical and electronic inputs and outputs are integrated upon the engine itself. Finally, the emergency and start buttons are ergonomically positioned, to better facilitate the operator’s work. www.salvamac.com

Wagner expands its IoT platform with new functions and entry-level version, COATIFY.light
The system’s performance monitoring – including data on machine status, number of coated parts per minute, coating times, and much more – is presented in the form of clear diagrams

In 2019, Wagner successfully launched the COATIFY web-based information and management platform, which is used for the intelligent visualisation of coating systems. The IoT platform can be accessed via PC, tablet or smartphone, and enables secure access to production data from anywhere in the world, at any time. Additional functions, and a special entry-level version called COATIFY.light, are now available. COATIFY provides clearly visualised key figures, live productivity monitoring, information on the exchange of spare parts, operating instructions with a spare parts list, and an interface to Wagner’s remote maintenance service. The controls and sensors in the Wagner products provide the raw data, which is transmitted to COATIFY via a secure connection. The information enables reliable process control, short response times and anticipatory service measures. Everyone involved in the production process benefits from the high level of transparency provided by the COATIFY platform – whether operator, production manager, service employee, quality or process manager. System availability is increased, and productivity and quality are enhanced. In addition to many other Wagner powder-coating systems, the SuperCenter powder centre and the ELine variant, which has the maximum control scope of this coating line, are now COATIFY READY – they can be connected to the platform. Soon, the entry-level variant of the E-Line and the SprayPackE automatic control unit will also be compatible with COATIFY. Plans are currently under way to also visualise liquid-coating systems in the future. The platform has been enriched by several functions. The user can trace details of past jobs, including the used recipe, coating material and other parameters. Recording and tracing of application data of the EPG control units used, – for instance, the setting of the air or high voltage – is now also possible. These new functions mean that certain parameter settings can be traced retrospectively. The production manager or quality manager, for example, thus receives even more valuable information on how quality can be optimised in future coating jobs. Furthermore, one of the new features is that, in addition to automatic coating, the proportion of manual coating in the production process can also be displayed. In the Performance Dashboard, the data is no longer only displayed per day, but also per shift. The charts update automatically at regular intervals. This means that the most up-to-date data is always displayed without having to retrieve the status manually. The user can now also choose between two COATIFY packages. In addition to the comprehensive complete package, which offers continuous data provision, the new version, COATIFY.light, is available as an attractively priced, entry-level package, with flexible billing models. It has a reduced range of functions and displays all data from the last 365 days, retrospectively. Depending on requirements, companies can start with the lowerpriced basic version and have it expanded accordingly as soon as the demands on their own production monitoring increase. www.coatify.net www.wagner-group.com
