Comment The past 18 months have served to remind us how fragile and precious life is, and how we should cherish our freedoms, in whatever form they come. As editor of this publication and website, one of my ‘freedoms’ is being out visiting readers and advertisers. On my travels, I never fail to learn something new, such as a recent visit to a joinery firm in Wrexham which predominantly designs and fabricates a wide range of furniture, equipment and leisure items for adults and children with special needs. Products such as giant bubble columns and hurricane walls are successfully exported by this company on a global scale – serving to illustrate how magnificent the Great British furniture industry is. This country’s furniture and joinery output is very special indeed, from industrial-scale kitchen furniture manufacturers, motor-home manufacturers, coffin makers, the bedding and upholstery manufacturers, contract furniture makers, the range of our nations output never ceases to amaze. Notably in this issue we hear from a number of machinery suppliers who are holding in house and online events over the coming weeks. The likes of SCM, Holz-Her, Daltons, CAD+T and others are reaching out with advice and insight on technology. As for the stresses and strains of raw materials’ supply, there is no doubt that this is a difficult time, especially with demand so high at present. The Confederation of Timber Industries offers their collective opinions on p114. Also in this issue, we catch up with the managing director of the British Furniture Manufacturer’s association, Nick Garratt, who informs us how the BFM is enabling furniture manufacturers looking to promote their work to a wider audience by utilising its new online service. Elsewhere, we catch up with Hill’s Panel Products, a highly successful supplier business whose customers run the gamut 6 News of the industry. With recent investments in added capacity and 14 Events capability, HPP looks fair set to remain a prime partner for the 30 Profile UK furniture market. Supply challenges expected to ease Global supply capacity is expected to recover later this year, according to figures examined by British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) in its latest economic update. But challenges to meet rising demand – including supply disruption and labour shortages exacerbated by the ‘pingdemic’ – are expected to continue in the near term. Supply chains, labour shortages and consumer confidence were all examined by BFM MD Nick

Garratt as part of the association’s Monthly Economic Review. The report evaluates economic trends and figures from The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Report and the Office for National Statistics, as well as data from XpertHR, CBI, GfK and the Consumer Prices Index. BFM members benefit from insight into the UK economic recovery, inflation and employment trends, as well as Nick’s assessment of the risks and opportunities for furniture

manufacturing over the coming months. Nick says: ““The furniture industry continues to benefit from strong demand, with strong retail sales volumes reflecting the easing of coronavirus restrictions. “The home continues to be a major beneficiary, whilst restrictions on travel and experiences limit consumer spending in these areas. “The major threat to businesses continues to be cost and supply based – both labour and materials.”

Softwood imports hold strong despite record growth in demand +18% higher than 2020 showing a strong bounce back, but, at a total of 0.2 million m3, they are yet to exceed 2019’s imports figures. A similar story to hardwood imports can be seen across both plywood imports and particleboard imports. OSB and MDF import volumes have, however, seen significant growth. TTF chief executive, David Hopkins, says: “RMI and new-build housing are the main drivers of softwood imports, and in both areas, there has been unprecedented growth – so unsurprisingly timber has followed. “The softwood sector is working at full pace to meet this incredible level of demand and to help support the realisation of the CPA summer forecast for double-digit growth in the construction industry – as well

Image © Timber Trade Federation

The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) reports that the volume of the main timber and panel products imported in May 2021 are nearly +58% higher than in May 2020. This comes as the total volume of imported timber and panel products in the five months to May 2021 exceeds 5 million m3, which is 1.5 million m3 higher than the same period in 2020. The growth in May 2021 over the previous year follows on from the record +103% growth in April 2021 over April 2020, which was highlighted last month. Softwood is a major driver of this growth, with 3.29 million m3 of softwood imported during this time, which is about +52% higher than in the same period last year, and +13% higher than in 2019. Hardwood import volumes over the five months to May 2021 were

as the UK-s economic recovery from Covid-19. As the pandemic eases and normal spending patterns return, with consumers spending more on going out and travelling and less on home improvement, we do expect that some of the tension in the market will be relieved. “However, there remains many unknowns which may constrain growth in the market. This includes

rising demand from a global construction ‘supercycle’, a shortage of raw materials, skilled workers, and disrupted supply chains. “This makes it incredibly hard to predict the exact time we will see a resumption of more regular activities in the UK economy, but we are confident that by Q4 a clearer picture will be formed of the timber market.” www.ttf.co.uk

UK visit by ambassador helps promote Indonesian wood products In a bid to encourage UK timber importers to increase their purchase of legal and sustainable timber from Indonesia, a delegation from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia has visited a number of manufacturers across the country. With FLEGT and legal and sustainable timber products at the top of their agenda – and led by Indonesian Ambassador to the UK, HE Desra Percaya – the delegation visited James Latham, Hanson Plywood, Lambson Building Products, and caravan manufacturer Willerby.

During his visit, the Ambassador reiterated his commitment to further strengthen the mutually beneficial partnership between Indonesia and the UK: “We should seize the momentum of the implementation of UKIndonesia FLEGT-VPA by seeking creative ways to increase supply sustainability of legal and sustainable timber products from Indonesia and ensure that such high-quality timbers remain as the critical part of the UK industry’s supply chain.” “Co-operation should be intensified to add more value to

(L-R) Mochamad Rizalu Akbar, Trade Attache, Indonesian Ambassador to the UK, H.E. Desra Percaya and Adi Winarso, Minister Councillor of Economic Affairs

As part of their trip, the delegation enjoyed a visit of the Hanson Plywood warehouse where they inspected Indonesian Timber products

Indonesia’s FLEGT-certified timber products and to replicate a similar mechanism with other forest and agriculture commodities. A holistic approach which involves all relevant stakeholders is indispensable. Business and industry associations, as well as consumers and NGOs, play a critical role in shaping perspective and demand, while governments and parliaments from both countries could provide regulatory and market incentives support as stated in the UK-Indonesia FLEGTVPA.“ UK sales agents and

representatives for supplier of premium-quality timber products from Indonesia, Pacific Rim Wood, which supplies a number of timber products to these manufacturers, helped organise the visit. MD Shaun Hannan commented: “It has been an honour to host the visit, which has already been heralded as a major success in helping to raise awareness of Indonesian FLEGT-licensed timber products, as well as encouraging UK importers and stakeholders to increase their purchase of legal and sustainable timber products from Indonesia.”

Kite delivers on being carbon neutral in 2021 Kite Packaging has been committed to protecting the environment since its founding in 2001. After stocking specialist enviro-products, establishing a compliance scheme to help companies to fund its recycling of plastic waste in the UK and launching a Plastic Reduction Campaign in 2019, achieving carbon neutrality was the natural next step. Inherent within Kite’s business model is the idea of wanting clients to be successful. By using less packaging, reducing costs and elevating their environmental consciousness, the business will naturally benefit. Shopping with a carbon-neutral supplier strongly supports this approach toward growth.

As a large-scale logistics operation, Kite had two main carbon contributors – fuel and energy. Firstly, the company offset its truck

fuel at source, bringing its carbon footprint in this category to zero. As an ISO14001-accredited company, energy consumption was already

being strategically reduced, but to achieve carbon neutrality Kite initiated a move toward renewable tariffs utilising wind, wave or solar energy. Carbon Neutral Britain verified this achievement in 2021, and neutralised the carbon that was not offset at source using Verified Carbon Credits. Constant growth and development is at the heart of Kite’s culture – the upcoming move into a new, state-of-the-art site, will make the business capable of championing further eco-friendly initiatives with “uncapped creativity”. The building will be entirely carbon neutral through solar technology, with the potential to be carbon negative. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

Organisations with social aims join forces to simplify National Procurement Service procedure

Ministry Group CEO Graham Hirst, centre, and his team

Ministry of Furniture, the company which emerged from Remploy Furniture, is collaborating with Merthyr Tydfil Institute for the Blind (MTIB) to combine key competencies for the benefit of National Procurement Service (NPS) members in the provision of workplace and education furniture. The collaboration will allow purchasers the opportunity to benefit from a simplified procurement procedure, while simultaneously working with two Welsh manufacturers with social aims and demonstrable expertise in remanufacturing and the circular economy. To engage with these collaborative organisations, NPS members are given the option to support lot 3 of their contracts. When opting for lot 3, purchase orders will be placed with Ministry of Furniture, which will provide the first point of customer engagement. The company will also provide project management, estimating,

interior design, bid management, light manufacturing and installation services. It will be the prime ‘contractor’ on any live project, and provide the financial ledger for invoicing and applications for payments. Merthyr Tydfil Institute for the Blind (MTIB) is a charity and company limited by guarantee, whose mission is to provide people with disabilities the opportunity for sustained employment. Founded in 1923 to support local blind miners, MTIB has been successfully providing training, development and employment opportunities for people with disabilities and health conditions for almost 100 years. Alongside the delivery of its employment and training programmes, MTIB’s 90%-disabled workforce operates its supported business manufacturing facility, which supplies wooden frames, card, fibreboard and furniture components to the furniture and office furniture industries. MTIB will be the primary

manufacturer and supplier of furniture under lot 3 of the NPS contract. It will also help to develop bespoke product solutions alongside Ministry of Furniture’s design team, and will provide production labour, materials and appropriate storage for the furniture it produces. Paul Griffiths, head of commercial delivery and capability at the Welsh Government, says: “We are delighted to see Ministry and MTIB working together. It brings together two Welsh social enterprises who are dedicated to helping the disadvantaged find real and fulfilling employment. “Being two Welsh-based manufacturers, they’re a powerful example of how our foundation economy can support economic recovery, lessening Wales’ dependency on global supply chains. Their remanufacturing capabilities fully embrace Beyond Recycling – our Circular Economy Strategy for Wales.” Graham Hirst, Ministry Group CEO, says: “We are delighted to be

collaborating with MTIB to produce furniture solutions for businesses and educational institutions throughout Wales. “This collaboration will provide a compelling solution for NPS customers that want to deliver a sustainable solution for their workplace and education furniture requirements. It will also give the added value of delivering tangible and impactful high-value community benefits for the Welsh economy.” Richard Welfoot, MTIB CEO, adds: “MTIB are excited to be collaborating with Ministry, as it provides the organisation with the opportunity to significantly develop its product range and service offering to customers. However, more importantly, it will help sustain the employment of our existing disabled workforce, and provide further job opportunities for people with disabilities and health conditions within our Welsh localities.” www.ministryoffurniture.com www.mtib.co.uk

Furniture Industry Research Association publish new business support documents and templates The latest project for members of the Furniture Industry Research Association is a suite of business support documents and templates. Covering a broad range of topics including carbon footprinting (Scope 1&2), UKCA Marking, Biocides and Modern Slavery, the suite is designed to support members in being compliant with various regulations. The full list of support documents and templates available comprise: • Carbon Footprint Calculator (Scope 1&2) • Environmental Policy Template • GB Biocidal Products Regulation (GB BPR) Labelling for Treated

Articles Template • Modern Slavery Template • Product Safety Incident Plan –Template based on PAS 7100 requirements • REACH, POPs and BIOCIDES Chemical Compliance Templates • UKCA Label Template for Marking of Products • Declaration of Conformity (GB Type post Brexit) The full suite of documents and templates were authored by Bruce Lovell, Consultant at FIRA International (the Service Provider to the Research Association). Speaking on their release he said “Supporting members is at the core of the Furniture Industry Research Association, and this is

a new direction in support which we’ve been working on, very much based across various areas which members look to us on guidance for. “When designing the suite I had the full membership in mind, so those smaller organisations can rely on the templates to work to compliance, whilst our larger members, who may have compliance and quality departments, can use the documents as a benchmark to ensure the right steps and up-todate templates are in place. “If members feel they would benefit from further support documents and templates which are not incorporated into this first

suite release then I would like to hear from them via info@fira. co.uk.” The various templates are available to members of the Furniture Industry Research Association via www.fira.co.uk/ knowledge-hub. Non-members can purchase copies at a cost ranging from £40 to £80 per document. For full details email FIRA. info@fira.co.uk www.fira.co.uk

The Superfici Live Experince – for a sustainable and surprising finish Superfici Live Experience is the latest SCM digital event, due to be broadcast on 9th September in six languages. Taking centre stage are some of the most innovative painting technologies, which can be seen in person at the Superfici Technology Center in Villasanta (Monza). “A genuine experience of the latest trends in painting, this is a journey that starts with sanding and finishes with the most appealing effects achievable on panels thanks to state-of-the-art technologies.” This is how SCM describes the topic at the centre of the Superfici Live Experience, its latest digital event, due to be broadcast on 9th September at 9am and 5pm (lasting one hour) in six languages – Italian, English, German, French, Russian and Chinese. Furthermore, from 6-10th September, at the same time as the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Superfici’s technology centre in Villasanta (Monza) will be open to visitors wishing to take a closer look at the technological solutions available and the exclusive painting results that can be achieved (advanced booking only). The latest protagonists At the centre of the webinar and the live demo will be the new Compact XL sprayer,

which encompasses benefits in line with the most modern and indispensable production requirements: maximum focus on the environment and cutting consumption, thanks to particular energy-saving devices that reduce air and water volumes needed for ventilation and cleaning; fast, first-class cleaning, thanks to the filters with automatic change, an innovative fast-cleaning system for the paint recovery unit, and air circulation conditions that are always optimal in the spraying environment; and even simpler, better-integrated use with other SCM group technologies, thanks to the new Maestro Active Finishing software control. Panels painted with Compact XL will then be treated with the innovative Excimatt technology, excimer UV, for an “exceptional” super-opaque finishing, a surprisingly silky effect (if requested), and an “incomparable” surface resistance thanks to the absence of mattifying agents in the product. Indeed, Excimatt allows for a mechanical micro-texturing to be achieved on the layer of paint applied. This replaces the opaqueness achieved using chemical additives, which would normally reduce the scratch resistance on the final painted surface.

This technology is extremely effective when treating flat, shaped surfaces – and on the profile, thanks to specific Superfici devices for three-dimensional spraying. Excimatt can be applied in roller lines or in thin layers for flat surface painting, and in spray lines to finish shaped panels and edges. As confirmed by Gloria Valtorta, Superfici’s business unit manager: “Superfici has always been SCM Group’s finishing specialist. Our mission is to satisfy the most recent demands from the painting sector, with state-of-the-art technologies for both standalone and custom built into the integrated

finishing lines. “Ours is an important challenge, because we are talking about appearance – that first impression when you find yourself in front of a unit, a piece of furniture, a door or a window. The continuous investments into R&D, however, and the know-how of our experts, in close synergy with that of other SCM technologies for surface treatment, have permitted us to design and achieve tailor-made solutions capable of exclusive, sought-after effects, precisely like those we will present digitally and live in September.” info@superfici.com

Sicam, the first in-person trade fair for the furniture industry to go ahead Over 500 exhibitors have signed up for the upcoming edition of Sicam, the International Exhibition of Components, Accessories, and Semi-Finished Products for the Furniture Industry, scheduled for 12-15th October 2021 in Pordenone. After the enforced break last year, this 12th edition will set in motion once again the virtuous cycle of this event, which has successfully designed a new trade fair experience and attracted the attention of operators from all over the world these past years. This eagerly anticipated return, upon which the Sicam team has worked tirelessly, finds a market in need of meeting up ‘in the flesh’ after such a difficult – though positive in economic terms – season. “It is undoubtedly a delicate time for the economy, which is forcing everyone to make precise, strong, brave choices,” says Carlo Giobbi, the founder and patron of Sicam. “We have designed a ‘Covid-free’ event, taking measures to comply with current regulations issued by national and regional authorities and ready to adapt to any new situations that might crop up, backed by the certainty of having the skills and tools necessary to ensure a safe trade fair for exhibitors and visitors. “Over these past 18 months we have remained in constant direct contact with our exhibitors to build together the comeback trade fair. We all share the desire to return to normality, to personally bear witness to this need to give the word ‘trade fair’ the only meaning

it can and should have – that is, a meeting between people. “This choice shows our firm need to bring work, production and the economy back to the way they were, while taking all the necessary precautions and care. “We all managed to adjust to the restrictions imposed by lockdown, favouring digital events and refined work methods. “However, at the end of the day, these were not the solution, but certainly an interesting way to handle the emergency – new ways of doing, working and communicating, which will continue to augment certain experiences going forward, but will never replace a trade fair event, physically meeting up with people, either planned or by chance, and having the opportunity to better understand things, touch them with your hand, grasp and share signs and emotions.” The industry’s first in-person international trade fair will have over 500 exhibitors from over 30 countries, mainly from Germany, Spain, Turkey, Austria, Greece and Poland. As it stands, 90% of the exhibition space has already been occupied. Hall 10 will be set up again this year. The organiser has decided to keep this temporary hall to help ensure specific safety measures and allocate more space to restaurant and service areas. The number, and above all the list, of exhibitors signed up for Pordenone is the best calling card for a lively, efficient trade fair rich in content. Worth noting is the return of many important names from

the world of surfaces, which have decided to return to Pordenone, along with the growing presence of companies from the ceramics, taps and fittings and stone segments, completing the portfolio of an event where one can find everything they need to make any item of furniture for any domestic or contract space, regardless of some absences from the hardware segment.

Sicam will re-emerge with a partially revamped layout, with more space reserved for services and common areas, while certain areas have been rearranged. “Our exhibitors are very familiar with our principles,” Carlo explains. “Those who choose to come to Pordenone – and even more so those who have confirmed their determination and entrepreneurial capacity even in such confusing times – have earned our full attention and respect. We will do our utmost to repay their trust in us.” Over the coming weeks the most intense efforts will revolve around attracting visitors, although the number and quality of the exhibitors instils great optimism about the arrivals at Pordenone this October. DIPA Symposium 2021 – the programme is set The programme for the second DIPA Symposium has been confirmed. The Digital Printing Association (DIPA) conference on surface design with digital printing will bring international experts and users from the industry together on 29th September, 2021, to highlight current trends on the topic of ‘Create your own Surface’, report on their experiences, and provide space for exchange and networking. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the conference will be held as a hybrid event in Hannover this year. The presentations, in German and English, will be translated simultaneously, and they, as well as the panel discussions, will be streamed live from the H’Up in hall 18 at the Hannover exhibition grounds. Registrations for participation in the conference – both in person on-site in Hannover and via livestream – are now open online. The programme consists of three thematic blocks, introduced by an opening keynote speech by Steffen

Ort, ‘From product to ecosystem: success criteria for digital surface decoration’. The process and innovation expert for digital print projects will shed light on the ingredients required for successful digital print projects – business model, online connectivity, colour and quality management, and print technology. The sessions at this time are Inks & Chemistry, Decor Design & Development, Technology & Software. Following these, in the Q&A

session moderated by Philipp Henry from Homag Group on ‘Singlepass & Multipass from the customer’s perspective’, Carsten Brinkmeyer, head of business development at Hymmen, and Tomio Kiyose, business development manager at Durst Group, will share their knowhow. Again, attendees are invited to converse with the experts on stage. Digital printing has become a significant asset as a decoration technology that can be integrated into the coating line. It makes even

the shortest print runs profitable, with maximum customisation and minimum lead times. These developments will be addressed by Mario Gazzani, business development manager at Cefla Group, in his presentation, ‘In Line Digital Printing’. Also, ‘What is the Yellow Brick Road, and what does it have to do with digital printing?’ Royce Dodds, specialist digital printing CC Group, Egger Holzwerkstoffe Brilon, will explain what it is all about. The lecture series will conclude with a presentation by Duncan Ross, commercial director, AVA CAD/CAM Group. The expert will address the topic – ‘From Design Development to Proofing to Digital and Analog Production’. The programme concludes with a Q&A session. Finally, moderators Stephanie Wagner, Deutsche Messe Hannover, Philipp Henry, Homag Group, and Oliver Lüdtke, ColorGATE, will summarise the results and highlights of the conference day. www.dipa-surface.com

Trade fairs – back to the real thing for Vecoplan In September, Vecoplan AG will take part in events in Germany, Russia and England. Experts from the company’s Recycling & Waste division will share their extensive know-how with existing and potential customers, and explain about the latest systems and machines. Vecoplan will be represented at several trade fairs in September. The first is WasteTech, which will take place from 7-9th in Krasnogorsk, near Moscow, and is an important gathering for the regional waste management and recycling industry. A week later, from 15-16th September, LetsRecycle Live will be held in Stoneleigh, England. The event will feature seminars, demonstrations and presentations. Vecoplan will have a stand here, too. At both fairs, Vecoplan’s experts will report on solutions for sustainable waste treatment and economical, flexible handling of refuse-derived fuels. In the cement industry, which is very energy

intensive, many manufacturers use refuse-derived fuels to reduce their costs. After processing, the material must be homogeneous and have a specific particle size range. Visitors will learn how this can be achieved through modern shredding solutions. Another focus will be on solutions for recycling plastics. Vecoplan not only offers the requisite know-how, but also provides machines and systems that shred, convey and process primary and secondary raw material so that it can be returned to production in a closed cycle. Plastics recycling will also be the main topic at the Plastics Recycling World Expo in Essen (Germany) from 29-30th September. At Vecoplan’s stand (B276), under the banner ‘Unlimited Plastics Shredding’, visitors will learn about its efficient shredders, which are able to deal with all kinds of input materials. 0121 222 5489 paul.costello@vecoplan.co.uk www.vecoplan.com

The BFM – championing the best of British furniture Furniture manufacturers wanting to champion their work to a wider audience can take advantage of a new, enhanced online service from the British Furniture Manu-facturers (BFM). The trade body has made significant investment in a new website, which includes an opportunity for members to promote their work in the digital marketplace. Each BFM member now has a profile page dedicated to their business – giving customers an easy-to-search showcase of the best of British furnishings and homewares. The service is of particular note for smaller manufacturers, who can take advantage of raising their profile in an engaging format. The website can be viewed at bfm.org.uk BFM has represented the interests of Britain’s furniture industry since 1947 and its membership includes a wide range of businesses, from rural craftspeople, through to household names. previous directory service, giving our members a much greater profile of their own businesses, with an enhanced area to showcase their company. “This platform is crucial in connecting with consumers across the nation and getting the ‘Buy British’ message across. “It’s an important part of our work overall to highlight the importance of the sector to our national economy and the quality and assurance that comes from buying British-made products. “It also taps into consumers’ current natural desire to buy local and support jobs na-tionwide.” This latest opportunity from the BFM is part of a package of services developed by the trade body to meet the needs of its members and champion the nation’s furni-ture makers. It follows on the launch of a new legal toolkit, launched at the beginning of June, which is free to members and offers legal and business advice on key subjects such as health and safety, employment, tax, contracts and data protection. Created by qualified and experienced solicitors and business experts, the BFM Legal Hub features DIY contracts, policies, forms and letter templates as well as straight-forward guides, links to key resources and up-to-date

information on new legislation and case law. BFM also provides timely, industry specific information to help members keep people up to date and get the assistance they need across their business operations, including dedicated hotline support and webinars, as well as a members’ area in-formation service, which is constantly updated. It is also helping members navigate Brexit, again ensuring that the industry is kept up to date of often complex factors, and providing help and assistance as required. Nick Garratt added: ““In the challenging times we face ahead, it has never been more important for our industry to come together and display the array of talent we have across the nation. “BFM offers value and assistance to its members in helping to get that message across.” To find out more about joining the BFM, please visit their website. www.bfm.org.uk/join-us

Hill’s Panel Products’ 30th anniversary comes amid new era of manufacturing, innovation and trade support services in post-lockdown world. Furniture & Joinery Production caught up with arguably one of the most complete suppliers in the UK furniture industry …

Adapting to a new normal Fitted furniture components manufacturer and distributor Hill’s Panel Products (HPP) is marking its 30th anniversary, as the sector, wider economy and society at large continues adapting to the ‘new normal’ post-lockdown life. HPP, which is a doors, boards and fittings specialist, is celebrating its history and growth with some anniversary publicity and activities this year. But ongoing Covid safety precautions mean that physical events, such as staff celebrations to mark the anniversary, are being pushed back to in 2022, if circumstances allow. (Similar to the recently rescheduled Euro 2020 football championships). HPP was founded in 1991 in a single industrial unit in Oldham, Greater Manchester, measuring 11,000 sq ft unit. Over the years, its head office site has grown to 11 units measuring over 250,000 sq ft – there is now also has a second UK distribution centre in Sheffield and operates nationally. Today, the company has over 2000 trade customers and supplies over 7000 products including its own brands of doors and cabinet components, full and processed sheet materials, vinyl-wrapped furniture doors and furniture fittings. Its own brands include Avanti doors, Glide sliding doors, and Aspect and Aspire kitchens and bedrooms. It also supplies products by other UK and European brands

including Egger, Blum and Kronospan. In recent years, its turnover has risen to over £34m and it currently employs just under 200 people. It undertook a major investment programme in manufacturing equipment and warehousing in recent years – just before the pandemic began in 2020. The company is headed by brothers Martin and Stephen Hill and managing director, Keith Wardrope. In this anniversary year, three new directors have joined the board, representing a new generation of future leaders. Other appointments have been made right across the business and the company is also investing in staff training and development across all departments. Investment and growth before the pandemic Between 2017 and 2019, HPP grew on multiple fronts and had a multi-million-pound investment programme. Overall sales grew by 16% in 2018, on top of 15% previously. Door sales rose by 30% and 11 new staff were trained for manufacturing in 2019, the year its second door production line was opened. The £3m second production line increased the company’s capacity to manufacture bespoke vinyl-wrapped doors for trade customers across the UK and Ireland. It enabled increased output from 30,000 to 45,000 units per month in the short term. In

the longer term, output can rise to 50,000 per month or more. The new line contains automated routing, cleaning, glue-spraying and vinyl-wrapping machinery supplied by Wemhoner and Sittex. The Italian-made Sittex equipment was the first in the UK. Speaking about the increased manufacturing capacity, MD Keith Wardrope said: “HPP is now one of the leading vinyl-wrapped doors and kitchen and bedroom component manufacturers in the UK. All our doors are manufactured to bespoke orders, with options on shapes, sizes, routing patterns, hinges and decors. The new production line manufactures doors across 40 styles and 70 colours, offering 2800 possible combinations. Seventy or 80% of our vinyl-wrapped doors can now be manufactured on the second production line while our first production line will focus on more intricate orders.” He added: “The new production line shows the continuing importance of the company’s agenda of moving forward through automation while also securing jobs for people. Some may worry that automation lead to job losses. However, HPP is using automation to secure jobs and to grow for the future. “Automation allows us to be competitive in the door manufacturing market by making production easier and more accurate. And

because we have been getting busier over the past few years, we also needed to recruit extra staff. “We must emphasise that our employees have contributed hugely to our success over the years and we want to reflect this in our 30th anniversary activities. We have a number of long-serving staff with really strong skills and experience. We are also attracting good young recruits across a range of roles and departments, which promises a great future for our company and furniture manufacturing in the UK.” Other investment over recent years has included a new £2.5m 19,000 sq ft warehouse to support the expansion of manufacturing. The building is the biggest free-standing warehouse at the company’s HQ in Oldham. The triplefronted warehouse store worktops and panel products. Its construction freed-up other space for the second door production line. It was the fifth warehouse to be built at the Oldham base. In addition to equipment and facilities, HPP has increased its value-added services through bespoke offers for customers and partnerships with other brands such as Egger, Kronospan and Blum. Examples include a customer order service to turn advanced sheet materials into doors and cut-to-specification orders for doors and panels with wide décor choice and optimised use of

sheet materials, reducing waste. HPP also launched a new service offering pre-assembled Blum drawers. Flat pack Blum components are assembled at HPP then delivered in boxes directly to installers, offering ultra-convenience to the trade customer. This service is being extended and HPP wants to increase its trade customer services across all its activities. The lockdown and new normal Although full national lockdowns have been lifted (at time of writing in), the pandemic’s impact continues to be felt and evolve, creating new challenges for businesses of all types and making the future difficult to predict. However, HPP says a priority is to assist the fitted furniture industry’s recovery from the impact of the lockdowns and to transition to the new normal. The company has developed a number of support offerings for retail showrooms along with digital resources to help the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom (KBB) fitted furniture sector in the new environment. When the first national lockdown of 2020 loomed, HPP had to act swiftly like other businesses. After discussions with staff, both sites in Greater Manchester and Sheffield were closed within two days In March 2020. But it was also very conscious of customers’

needs too during the ensuing lockdown. In the early days, the company contacted trade customers with an email survey and asked if they needed any specific help. A click-andcollect service was offered to help smaller installers finish jobs they had been working on, such as fitting kitchens or bedrooms inside empty houses. Later in the spring of 2020, HPP opened its warehouses very minimally to receive some large deliveries then slowly reopened manufacturing, despatch and office functions on a restricted scale. Once new Covid safety measures were enacted, a very small group of staff returned to work in mid-May 2020. The lockdown era was not without pain. Keith recalled: “Sadly, we had to make some redundancies but those were fewer than we feared. Some staff were subsequently reemployed, which was great. We had to adapt to the impact of the pandemic and tried to respond positively to diverse new challenges and opportunities. “We gradually became fully operational and demand became quite strong, with the boom in home improvements with home working, home schooling and other big changes of 2020. We have seen signs of growing economic confidence but it’s a complex picture with different factors are at play. However, many people are still spending considerable time at

home and investing in property, one way or another. “Likewise, commercial property is seeing changes as a result of changed working, commuting and leisure patterns. We are seeing re-purposed commercial spaces, more mixed-use of office and retail properties,

and more flexible planning regulations. All these developments and trends will feed into architecture, interior design, interior specification, furniture and fittings.” Showroom packages and online support To support the fitted furniture sector’s recovery

and development, HPP is launching physical product packages for showrooms and enhanced online resources. Dan Mounsey, who became HPP’s director of marketing and business development this year, explained: “We believe our retail showroom package is quite a unique offer, due to us being

the only company that can cover all these bases. We aim to offer free HPP kitchen and bedroom displays to retail showrooms and a contribution towards the fitting cost. Our plan is for our packages to cover worktops, kitchen and bedroom doors, Blum hinges, HPP’s Blum ready-made drawer boxes, door handles, lighting, wire-work and bins. “We’ll also assist with showroom point-ofsale aids, handle display boards, our Unique Choice kitchen and bedroom brochures, discounts on showroom accessories and the Easycab range, and access to marketing and merchandising aids.” New online resources for trade customers include an Egger Inspiration Centre on HPP’s website. Dan said: “We are an Egger Diamond Distributor and have enjoyed a great relationship with Egger for many years. The Inspiration Centre brings together all Egger’s digital resources and tools in one location including enhanced 3D visuals which capture advanced décors. The new Egger Decorative Collection, door ranges with Egger decors and Egger worktops are highlighted too. Physical samples can also be ordered by trade customers.” Sustainability is increasingly important for the furniture industry and in consumers’ purchasing decisions, says HPP. The Egger

worktops are PEFC-certified and use renewable material. The 38mm worktops can all be recycled and the range has FIRA Gold Award for product testing and quality. By highlighting such features and measures, it believes furniture showrooms and installers can help to distinguish themselves in the market, especially to younger, environmentally aware consumers. In keeping with its promotion of the sustainability agenda in furniture, timber trades and forestry, HPP has been a sustainability partner at the annual KBB Design Awards and supported a range of tree planting and environmental programmes in the UK and overseas. Programmes include tree planting in Manchester schools and the Royal Horticultural Society’s new 156-acre Garden Bridgewater in Salford, and sustainability projects in Africa and India.

New directors, appointments and training In addition to Dan becoming a director this year, HPP has appointed Andrew Evans and Gareth Evans as IT director and sales director respectively. Andrew, 45, joined HPP in 2004. His first role was continuous improvement manager. Later he became IT systems manager which diversified to include company data management systems including business Intelligence. He then progressed to IT manager with extra responsibility for hardware, infrastructure and enterprise resource planning (ERP). He said: “Becoming a director at HPP is a great step forward for me. I want to add extra weight to all areas of the business and to use my skills and those of the IT Department team to advance the company.” Gareth Evans, also 45, first started at HPP aged 17 in sales. He said the opportunity to work across many different departments was invaluable for his knowledge and development. “I’ve spent all my career in the KBB sector, including a spell with Slumberland. I’ve now been with HPP for 20 years and seen a lot of positive change. I’m really pleased to become a director with Dan and Andrew. Our combined knowledge can help ensure continued success for HPP,” he says. Also, this year, Gary Kinder has joined the company as purchasing manager. The 53-year-old has extensive industry experience and his CV includes roles with Eurospace Furniture, Symphony, Richmond Cabinets and JT Ellis. In other staff developments, HPP is investing in workforce development with 17 staff members joining an ILM Level 2 qualification course for leadership and team skills. The qualification is designed to help individual staff improve their performance as team members

The aim being to enhance the company’s operations at all levels in order to improve efficiency and service to trade customers. Dan said: “Our business is committed to skills and training right across all departments and at all levels. It’s great to see 17 staff involved

with this Level 2 programme. “It will enhance our operations in many ways by giving staff more insight, skills and understanding of business needs and issues. It’ll boost both individual and team communications, direction, productivity, planning, problem-solving and development. We are also looking to progress staff onto the next Level 3, building on this.” Two groups of staff have already taken part in the training sessions held at Oldham Events Centre at Oldham Athletic FC. It is also helping to address the industry’s growing skills gap by providing work, training and mentoring opportunities for six young people at its Oldham HQ and second UK distribution centre in Sheffield, under the Government’s Kickstart programme. This provides funding to support placements for 16 to 24-year-olds who are at risk of unemployment but keen to gain experience, skills and an income. HPP has a history of supporting young people. This includes speaking at careers fairs to raise awareness of the furniture industry, supporting an Oldham youth centre and hosting educational activities. In summary, HPP is very busy on all fronts as it looks to the post-lockdown future. Hopefully, there will be some time for it to collectively celebrate its 30th anniversary safely in coming months, as it and other furniture businesses adapt to the ‘new normal’. 0161 628 1147 www.hpponline.co.uk

Openings Move to new HQ provides firstclass showroom and office facilities for J & C O’Meara Established in 1990, J & C O’Meara is widely recognised as one of the country’s most progressive woodworking machinery businesses. Having outgrown their previous premises, they have moved – but they’re still based in Burscough, Lancashire! The new facility may only be a strong cricket ball throw away, but the difference in set up is quite remarkable and serves to underline the company’s confidence, ambition and drive. J & C O’Meara’s impressive new 8000 sq ft facility comprises a self-penned office complex within a large, well-organised showroom replete with a large range of machines all powered up with appropriate extraction in a full demo-ready set up. The options on show at the time of my visit showed an intent not previously obvious. In pride of place was a robust offer from top Turkish manufacturer, AES. A flank of three CNC

machines comprising a Raptor Ultra, a smaller Flexa Pro as well as a Vega Ultra sat to one side of the spacious showroom. On the drilling side of things, the ever-popular Sirius 950M CNC drilling machine and GO CNC drilling and routing machine was on show alongside a Flexa Pro 2132 vertical CNC. Elsewhere the Swiss sanding experts Kündig had a display of three machines the Kündig Master 1350 RE wide belt sander next to a Kündig Brilliant and a Kundig Uniq and Uniq S machines. Also on show were the three newly upgraded Genesis edgebanding machines featuring pre-milling and corner rounding. The company also featured AES dust extraction units to go alongside all of the Turkish firm’s machines – these high performing yet affordable units range from single bag units to full industrial.. A new option for the UK market, on display and

Another important factor that J & C O’Meara’s new premises provides is a large mezzanine floor to enable a full range of in-stock spares – something that is vital in providing a professional service to its customers. “Of course, being from a service-orientated background,” explains the company’s managing director Carl O’Meara, “we are fully aware of the importance of after sales service and will continue to carry a vast amount of spares for support. Our staff are always happy to assist with any technical advice along with our engineers for on site support if required.” J & C O’Meara’s newly appointed national sales manager, Jeff Green (pictured right) explained that the new showroom provides an outstanding opportunity for clients to compare and contrast a range of equipment from a variety of manufacturers under one roof, all powered and

ready to demonstrate. He said: “Our new facility is up and running and we are pleased to be able to demonstrate our CNC equipment, beam saws, edgebanding machines, ancillary extraction products and our drilling and sanding options –

we will be delighted to host you, give us a call.” The company’s managing director Carl O’Meara said: “We are thrilled with our new facility, albeit a stone’s throw from our previous home. We believe this is a significant gear change for the company and we hope to see lots of our clients and colleagues from across the industry over the coming weeks and months. The investments we have made in our new facility will allow us to demonstrate the capabilities of the ranges we offer in a more professional manner. We also intend to rotate our stock regularly providing good reasons to drop by on a regular basis.” J & C O’Meara, new facility is located at Unit 4A, Dakota Business Park, Dakota Way, Burscough, Lancashire L40 8AF 01704 893 109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

Bairds Windows invest in Stenner ST100R from Daltons Wadkin Family run since 1994, Bairds Windows in Newton Stewart have developed an impressive windows and doors manufacturing facility, which has grown to over triple their original capacity. Furniture & Joinery Production interviewed Malcolm Baird, fabrication director, about the heritage of Bairds Windows and the decision to invest in a new Stenner ST100R band resaw from Nottingham based machinery specialists, Daltons Wadkin. What does Bairds Windows produce, and who for? With over 20 years’ experience in designing and manufacturing high quality windows and doors, Bairds windows have now acquired a facility over three times the size of their previous workshop. Their customer base is varied, supplying PVC and timber products to domestic homes, commercial sites, and council buildings. Why did you start looking for a new band resaw? The old resaw started to show signs of ageing and inaccuracy. Limitations with cutting

43

capacity, lengthy processing times and excess wastage prompted the decision to invest. “We had limited deeping facility on the old machine. We’re hoping to supply timber weatherboards, so that was one of the main reasons why we chose the Stenner,” explained Malcolm. When did you first hear about Stenner Machinery? “My dad had always wanted a Stenner, it’s just one of those things,” Malcolm shared his dad’s enthusiasm for Stenner machinery. After already investing in a Salvador automatic crosscut saw from Daltons Wadkin, it was a visit to the W Exhibition where Malcolm and his dad, Eric Baird, saw the Stenner ST100R in action. The ST100R is a ‘pitless’ resaw requiring no special installation other than the requirement for mains electricity, air supply and extraction. Established in 1875, Stenner is a British manufacturer renowned for its ‘bomb-proof’ range of band resaws. How easy is it to use the Stenner ST100R? The Stenner has simplified the job for the operators, saving time and material waste, enthuses Malcolm. “What we used to have was more complicated to work – adjusting blades,

taking the tension off. With the Stenner you just have to flick a button.” The ST100 range of resaws all feature pneumatic blade strain, factory set pressure guides and automatic blade lubrication. What are the key benefits of the Stenner resaw? “The key benefits are the accuracy of the timber that’s coming off the machine, and minimising the amount of waste,” Malcolm explained the financial saving incurred through less waste has been significant. To further increase productivity, included as standard equipment on the ST100R, is a pneumatically operated radial arm feed which is activated by photocell. As standard the machine incorporates a hand wheel for fine adjustment and a foot pedal override facility is also available as an option. This allows the operator to control the feed remotely while simultaneously feeding lengthy timbers.

Would you recommend a Stenner ST100R from Daltons Wadkin? “Bairds would recommend a Stenner from Daltons Wadkin. The service was great, everything the sales director, Andy Walsh, promised was delivered.” Malcolm concluded with: “It’s the Rolls Royce of resaws”. Daltons Wadkin worked closely with Bairds Windows to offer a machine which not only fitted their current requirements, but importantly would also grow with the business over the next twenty years or more. Investment in a Stenner resaw was not only a business decision for Bairds Windows, the personal goal of owning a new Stenner machine has now been reached. Furniture & Joinery Productioin and the team at Daltons Wadkin wishes Malcolm and Eric Baird all the best as they continue to develop their product range, and surpass their ambitions. 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.co.uk

Alpha-Brush reduces time spent hand-sanding for bespoke furniture maker Based in Edenbridge, Oliver James Furniture designs and creates high quality bespoke furniture for the kitchen, bedroom or any room in the home and undertakes commissions typically all over London and across England’s home counties. The company’s beautiful bespoke joinery is handmade and fully fitted by Oliver James Furniture. Whether it’s a fitted contemporary kitchen or a free-standing period bookcase, the company has the requisite bench skills to design practical, stylish and long-lastings solutions to its customers’ exacting requirements. Oliver James Furniture’s managing director Gary Bishop says the company works closely with its clients to ensure each design is unique and reflects their individual style and personality. Each piece of furniture is hand-built by our craftsmen to exacting standards using only the finest quality materials. “Our stylish designs are tailor-made to suit customer’s tastes, needs and lifestyle, be that traditional or contemporary. We pride ourselves

on meticulous attention to detail,” says Gary, “and all our furniture is made on site in our modern, well-equipped workshop using a combination of traditional bench skills and a range of classical machinery all finished to our trademark high standards.” Until recently, the Edenbridge-based firm used a variety of sanding techniques to achieve the desired finish on cabinet doors, including timeconsuming hand de-nibbing processing. Gary knew this was a situation which was important to be done well, but in doing so it tied up highly skilled craftsmen doing what is a fairly tedious and mundane task – a solution needed to be found. Having seen a possible solution online, Gary reached out to Ian Brown, MD of Newark-based International Woodworking Machinery regarding an Alpha Brush Infinity Twin-headed sanding. Enquiries were made and it appeared that this was just what Oliver James Furniture was looking for. But before going any further, Ian Brown suggested Gary dispatched some of his door

frames and cabinet doors to be tested on the Alpha-Brush showroom machine – as he hoped, the samples came back in perfect order. Taking that on trust, Gary placed the order for a 1000mm wide 2S version which features two sanding units: the first unit was fitted with twin-railed longitudinal flap heads, and the second had unit twin rows of orbital flap heads to deliver an optimal finish – perfect for Gary to more efficiently deliver the high quality finish his customers demand. In terms of what this means for Oliver James Furniture, Gary says: “Before we got this Infinity sander, we had two guys spending a considerable amount of time on and off doing this laborious task by hand. With the AlphaBrush machine it’s very simple to operate and maintain, and the work is done so much quicker.” The Infinity machine is described as ‘the perfect solution for small- to medium-sized companies’ and is built with heavy duty frames, motors and components for years of demanding use. The Infinity is available in three sizes – 600,

1000 and 1350mm wide – and can be supplied with one, two, three or four sanding stations. The machines have separate adjustable speed control for each unit as well as for the conveyor. The height adjustment is achieved by turning a hand wheel is measured down to 0.1mm with electrical counters. The Alpha-Brush machines come as standard with 2.2 kW motors, but can be upgraded up to 11kW, depending on application. They also come fully prepared with a vacuum table outlet so an external vacuum fan can easily be connected. The two sanding units are easily accessible for maintenance, removal and storage as required. Asked what he liked about the machine, Gary said: “It’s already making a big difference to our business – it’s robust, straightforward to operate and maintain and doesn’t take up much room in the workshop – couldn’t imagine being without it! I would have no hesitation in recommending the machine – and Ian’s team at IWM.” 01636 918280 www.iwmachines.co.uk 01732 867 972 www.oliverjamesfurniture.co.uk The Alpha-Brush Infinity sander significantly reduces the manual workload and achieves firstrate results

“To confirm our belief, we visited the Homag showroom in Castle Donington, Derby. At the showroom, our area sales manager, Charles Smith, guided us on the exact product specifications to suit our particular needs. His specialist knowledge gave us the added confidence that we were selecting the right equipment supplier. “We had originally planned to purchase only one Homag machine but after reviewing our specific manufacturing requirements and capabilities with Charles, we confidently opted to purchase four machines instead. “We were impressed with the manner in which our enquiries were handled and the outstanding treatment that we were given at the Derby showroom. “The support and help Charles and the Homag aftersales support team have provided us with has been exceptional. When for instance we had a software issue with one of the machines, the Homag engineers resolved it quickly.”

“Companies that produce woodwaste can’t afford not to buy one!” A Buckinghamshire furnituremaker has purchased a woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on heating and waste disposal costs. Simon Taylor Furniture in Aylesbury is an award-winning company specialising in bespoke projects such as designing and making luxury fitted kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, as well as offering full interior project management solutions for every room in the home. Having seen a woodwaste heater in use at another business, MD Simon Taylor realised that such an investment would be beneficial in helping him reduce energy and minimise waste in his own business. Simon is very conscious about sustainability and his business’ carbon footprint, so did more research on woodwaste heaters and spoke to Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology. He liked the idea of being able to recycle the MDF and chipboard offcuts into energy, rather than disposing of them in skips to go to landfill. There was also the benefit that the woodwaste burner would provide free heating to the workshop, making the current oil-fired heating redundant, saving the business money on both heating and waste disposal. Simon received a grant from Low Carbon Workspaces for the woodwaste heater, and invested in a WT10 which was installed last year. Simon says: “I’m delighted with the woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology. In my mind, companies that produce woodwaste can’t afford not to buy one! Especially as we’ll have had payback on the investment in less than 12 months! “I’m very proud of the sustainable improvements I’ve made to my commercial property, including investing in a woodwaste heater and also in solar panels. Where we can, we avoid putting anything into landfill. “All our timber offcuts are now used to heat

We all know that space in at a premium in the kitchen, especially in modern new-build properties. Space Tower comes in many different widths, from 300mm to an enormous 1400mm, ideal for the smallest to the largest of kitchens, but the Space Tower slim provides an ingenious storage solution that requires just a 300mm wide gap, making it available for even the smallest of kitchens. The Space Tower slim is an exceptionally narrow cabinet, which is supplied with four deep drawers. Furnica – an international fittings supplier building on solid foundations Established in 2016 by father and son team Janusz and Kamil Siedzielnik, Furnica is now a trusted supplier of hinges, drawer slides, fittings and components replete with warehouse and office facilities in the UK, Poland and Germany, backed up by dedicated multi-lingual websites. Furnica’s main customers are carpenters, joiners, cabinetmakers, woodworkers and KBB manufacturers, and the company currently employs 22 people in total. Its UK facility is centrally located in Rugby, Warwickshire. Janusz has been associated with the furniture industry since 1995, and for 25 years was a leading manufacturer of custom-made furniture and bespoke kitchens. The experience he gained during this time, and a wide knowledge of the furniture accessories market, enables Janusz to anticipate and satisfy the needs of the furniture and carpentry industry. Kamil has been closely with the furniture industry for 12 years. Throughout his career he has worked with several well-known European brands of made-to-measure furniture, and

furniture accessories manufacturers. Knowing the needs of the carpentry industry, five years ago he created an online platform to deliver furniture accessories to customers in five European countries. During this time, this has created a multi-million-pound turnover enterprise. According to Jacek Siewiaryn, head of marketing, Furnica’s key strengths, which make the company stand out from its competitors, are: “Unlike many wholesalers, Furnica is a direct importer and producer of most of the products

in its offer. Thanks to this, customers can count on the best prices and a direct guarantee – because Furnica takes full responsibility for each product, from hinges and furniture runners to cable grommets and many more besides. To highlight this significant element, Furnica introduced the Furnicore emblem – having this mark guarantees the highest quality of product. “We are living In crazy world. Covid-19 and Brexit present considerable challenges for small, family-owned business – customers will be looking for stable suppliers of furniture materials and components, and of course the price will be more important than ever. “The second factor, and probably the most important, is logistics. Due to the very high prices of freight from China, the whole problem is not the price, as much as the actual availability of the products. But, thanks to our three warehouses in Germany, Poland and the UK, Furnica is able to deliver goods to any part of Europe within four working days. We believe these two factors will be extremely important in the next two years.”

FITTINGS & COMPONENTS

Furnica says its last 24 months have been an challenging period, with intensive development for the company. “During this period, sales in five European markets quadrupled,” says Jacek. “The increase in demand resulted in the expansion of the warehouse in Poland and the opening of two new warehouses in Germany and the UK.” The last 18 months have also been a dynamic time for Furnica: “We were able to launch a number of original products under the Furnica brand over the past year and a half, such as the 3D hinge and the entire line of Push To Open runners. Despite the difficulties of Brexit and Covid-19, for Furnica it has been a time of very intensive development and large sales increases in all markets. In 2020, Furnica established its branch in the USA, and at the moment, work is under way to launch an ecommerce platform for this market,” points out Jacek. Furnica says that currently, the greatest emphasis is placed on improving its customer service and ensuring the shortest possible delivery times for its customers, adding that it is also focusing on developing the product

53

range manufactured under the Furnica brand. In addition, due to the dynamic growth of the markets in Italy and France, Furnica plans to open another new warehouse in France in 2022 in order to shorten delivery times to these markets. At the moment, Furnica is focused on introducing its new Push-To-Open drawer runners and a line of extravagant furniture handles. In the meantime, it is looking primarily to the development of its associates – as Jacek says, they are the most important part of the entire company. “We are in the process of introducing a series of training programmes to maintain the knowledge of our employees at the highest level internationally, whilst not forgetting the importance of a healthy atmosphere and team spirit. After all, Furnica is about people – without them we would only be a company selling hinges, and that’s not what we want. We want to form a long-term co-operation with both employees and customers.” 07441 909300 office@furnica.co.uk www.furnica.co.uk

The future of furniture is free Manufacturers are always on the look-out for innovative fixtures and fittings which give customers more options when it comes to the style and functionality of their spaces. Increasingly, those helping design and install customers’ dream kitchens are being called upon to maximise access to, and room within, cabinetry, to make use of all available space. To assist, Häfele offers the Free family – a range of hinge-less and hinged flap-type fittings which eliminate the need for large, space-consuming cover caps. Available in a variety of options to suit kitchens of different sizes, heights and depths, the collection has already won several international awards and is becoming a must-have fitting for kitchens where space is a premium. Designed using Häfele’s extensive knowledge of the furniture manufacturing market, the Free family places user-friendly functionality at the heart of its design, and has undergone extensive testing to ensure high quality and durability. It offers the option to either tilt, lift, fold or swivel cabinet doors into a fixed open position, depending on the available space, ensuring users are able to reach deep into the chassis from all angles. The fittings are simply clip-mounted to cabinets using a single pre-mounted conventional screw connection on the side walls for quick assembly, and each offer different weight and angle capabilities. They are available in standard colours – white, light grey and anthracite, and in black as a special order product – to match most kitchen cabinet designs. The Free family, made up of the Space, Fold,

Flap, Up, Swing, Maxi and Duo, are available with either a soft-close mechanism or as a touch opening for handle-less panels. Electric options are also available for soft-close and push-to-open versions. Each offers even more space within a kitchen compared to traditional hinges, and presents individual benefits so can be cherry-picked to suit a customer’s specific

requirements. Free Flap, for example, is best suited to flap doors at medium or low heights, where there is little space available upwards of the cabinet, and for those with compact dimensions and shallow depths. Free Up is tailored for kitchens where there is little space available to move a cabinet door outwards – instead, it is suited to chassis with overhead fronts and additional ceiling room height. Free Fold is suitable for cabinets where taller fronts are used to conceal multiple internal shelves, while the Free Swing offers elegant movement, extending the profile backwards by almost 180˚ to make slim spaces above cabinets more functional. Meanwhile, Free Space has been recognised by world-leading award programmes, which have highlighted the product for its distinctive but functional properties. It achieved a special award with the globally renowned Red Dot Award, and was presented as a ‘world first’ when it achieved the interzum award for ‘High Product Quality’ in 2019. It has since gone on to win the German Design Award and German Innovation Award in 2020. The Free family has already inspired hundreds of thousands of designers and manufacturers to think differently about hinge work. Manufacturers who want to play a part in transforming the way customers use their kitchens in the future are already benefitting from Free, and Häfele is confident it will continue to lead the way in flap fittings for a long time to come. www.hafele.co.uk

Things are cooking up for Space-Plug with Byggan, U-scribe and Fixol joining in the mix

Since its launch, Space-Plug has grown into a recognised and professional solution for kitchen and furniture fitting. With an innovation award from FIRA and sales in excess of 5.5 million units, there’s no doubt this ‘handy orange doofer’ as it’s often referred to, has certainly made its mark in the KBB industry. Inventor and MD, Cliff Petit states: “Wren kitchens have been an incredible partner for us. Our inclusion with their units is a wonderful opportunity to reach volume whilst retail distribution has bolstered growth and provided valuable resources.” Currently, Amazon hosts Space-Plug’s entire range with further distribution coming from Howdens, Screwfix, Toolstation and Axminster – but in the latest addition to the company’s distribution strategy, Space-Plug is announcing a host of new partnerships and a brand new outlet. Currently, Space-Plug.com was designed in house: “We’re a family run business and have to turn our hands to many things,” explains Cliff, “my brother, Nige, managed to self-teach some basic WordPress skills and what we’ve had is something hopefully humorous and attractive but simply there to increase awareness of the product and an understanding of it’s potential. But with the scale of the following we now have, a more commercial relaunch is very much

in order.” Space-Plug has teamed up with some big brands and great offers via Byggan.com, an independent tool shop specialist with the ability to add some real value for Space-Plug shoppers. Lights, action! (but no wires) Hettich’s versatile AvanTech You drawer system earned the 2021 Interzum Award in the ‘High Product Quality’ category for outstanding design merit. The new stand-out design features which caught the jury’s eye include integrated lighting. It is features such as this which reflect the growing megatrend of individualisation, reinforcing customer demand for customisation in addition to design flexibility in kitchen and home furnishings. This particular award spotlights outstanding design in terms of form and functionality. The slimline drawer side profile of a mere 13mm, with invisibly integrated front-panel adjustment function, permits elegant, flawless design in any combination. It is the ideal setting for this signature lighting feature, which integrates in the profile both elegantly and easily. Simply clipping into place, a designer profile illuminates open drawers on the inside in an even 4000K LED light, while creating an eyecatching feature on the outside, too. The glass inlays have polished or ground edges to create distinctive lighting effects.

Costly connections A practical rechargeable battery pack provides the necessary energy, so there is no need for costly electrical connections, leaving high-quality design with signature lighting to steal the show without any added cost. Even at standard line-up level, the AvanTech drawer platform provides a plethora of design combinations in terms of colour, shape and material. Providing the option of giving drawers signature lighting, AvanTech You plays with attractive design features that tick every box when it comes to contemporary taste and style. Defined by design flexibility Aside from this new lighting option, design flexibility touches every aspect of the AvanTech You drawer system. There are five drawer heights, numerous widths, three colours for the drawer and its internal organisation (silver, anthracite and white) and two runner system options (Actro or Quadro) on a single drilling pattern with up to 70kg load capacity, to suit different applications and market segments. Practical benefits include the fact that no routing of the bottom panel is necessary. Manufacturers can choose screw-fitting the

bottom panel or using clamps with the no-catch assembly. Rear-panel corner connectors for wooden rear panels are no longer required. Add the options of Push to open silent, customisable internal drawer front heights and materials, and individual drawer side printing with the facility for a branding clip, and one has near-infinite added-value possibilities. Hettich was founded in 1888, and today is one of the world’s largest and most successful manufacturers of furniture fittings. Unrivalled creativity from Lamello Pravin Gajparia is a man that knows that he wants and importantly, knows how to get it. Already the owner of a successful, Londonbased construction company and development company, his next move has been to invest £1.2m in a new, 14,000 square foot workshop, to house a new joinery company, Orange Tree Joinery. “I started Orange Tree Joinery in 2018 and it was the missing piece of the jigsaw in my construction portfolio,” begins Pravin. “My construction business was winning multimillion pound projects for a wealth of celebrities and royalty but, with no manufacturing facilities of my own, I was having to outsource highly bespoke, and often highly intricate work, to local joinery firms. This left me with little control over lead times or quality control. It seemed like a logical step to open a joinery business that could not only service my other businesses but also make a name for itself as a high-end, bespoke joinery firm in its own right.” With Pravin at the helm, Orange Tree Joinery was never going to be a run-of-the-mill joinery shop. He had a vision: he wanted to offer architects, designer and specifiers complete creative freedom, with zero design limitations. “I’m a firm believer that anything is possible when you have the very best products to hand,” says Pravin. “I only wanted to partner with innovative businesses and only use the very best equipment.” This resulted in the company investing in a range of machinery from SCM, including two CNC’s – a three-axis N100 and five-axis Morbidelli M100 – which would be teamed with Lamello’s unique CNC joining solution, the Cabineo 12, to create strong, seamless joins without the need for screws or glues.

Lamello’s Cabineo connectors are being used by Orange Tree Joinery to connect Hi-Macs and solid quartz, as well as carcasses.

Drilling and milling tools

Morbidelli m100

“In order for me to make my vision happen, I needed to make my machinery operators and fitters lives easier,” says Pravin. “With new CNC’s ordered and SolidWorks software in place, I needed a connector that could be integrated into my processes easily. It needed to be suitable for surface machining, work efficiently without the need for additional drill holes in the edge and offer innovative solutions to tricky designs. The Cabineo 12 was exactly what I was looking for.” The one-part connector, which has been designed for dividing panels from 24mm and corner joints from 13mm, offered the design versatility and aesthetics Pravin was looking for. As well as offering precise alignment without additional alignment elements, the Cabineo 12 offers more efficient production, faster installation and a higher clamping force when compared to standard cam and dowel fittings. “It’s streamlined our production, reduced handling and it’s halved the time our fitters need on site,” says Pravin. “This significant time-saving advantage saves on labour and, because the Cabineo 12 is so simple to connect, mistakes are a thing of the past.” The introduction of Lamello’s CNC connector

also offer even more design possibilities. Pravin says: “The Cabineo is known to be a brilliant aid for joining carcasses but we’re using it on so much more, including on Hi-Macs and solid quartz. We’re regularly using it on Corian kitchen islands, vanity units and bar fronts, too. It offers exceptional strength and you won’t find a screw in site. It has the ability to help us create anything. So much so, we’ve just won a contract to design two exhibition stands that will be built solely with Lamello’s connectors. We’ll be using five of Lamello’s connectors in total – including the magnet driven Invis Mx2, Tenso P and Divario P – to create a plug and play stand. Lamello was the only option for this.” Going forward, Pravin is on track to double the number of projects he’s completing in the next 12-months. Pravin adds: “We’re currently buying 40,000 Lamello fixings a year but I can see us doubling this due to a very buoyant market. I set out to be different to everybody else and to offer my customers a service they simply cannot find elsewhere. I’m confident I’m achieving this thanks to a fleet of cutting-edge machinery, strong relationships with my suppliers and the use of premium products like Lamello. www.lamello.co.uk

The A to X of insert nuts There are a lot of insert nuts to choose from. The team at JET PRESS is always on hand to give you the best possible advice. In the meantime, here is a quick guide to some of the options available. A Type or B Type are suitable for lightweight applications. They tap quickly and easily into a pre-drilled hole. External barbs prevent spinning and offer a good level of pull-out resistance, particularly in hard wood and plywood. Type A Inserts are unheaded so they can be embedded in the timber for a flush fit. Type B has a flanged head which prevents pull-through when bolted from the underside. Screw-in Type D and Type E Insert Nuts offer a greater degree of hold-in and a higher resistance to vibration, thanks to the external, self-tapping thread. The hex head makes fitting quick, accurate and easy using a hexagon driver or Allen key. This makes them well suited for use in soft woods and chipboard. The flange on the D Type ensures that the insert is screwed tightly up to the timber surface whilst the Type E can be fully embedded within the pre-drilled hole Type I inserts offer a neat finish where the head is visible. Large flanged inserts spread load across a larger surface area on heavy duty assemblies. Type P inserts ensure a high pull-out resistance and expanding brass Type X inserts grip tighter as the bolt is screwed in and serrated.

Expertise is free There’s a lot to think about when selecting the correct Insert Nut for your job. The thread size and length of insert required are often determined by the fixings being used and the timber thickness. And you have to factor in the forces in play in the joint where the Insert Nut is to be used.

Panel Processing In conversation with

NBJ London

Furniture & Joinery Production talks to Mark Jeffcote, assistant workshop manager at NBJ London, about how a second Striebig Control vertical panel saw is continuing to benefit their business.

One of two Striebig Control vertical panel saws at NBJ London

Who is NBJ London and what do you do? We are a long-standing joinery manufacturer specialising in high-end, bespoke joinery, cabinetry and metalwork. We work with architects and designers to complete specialist joinery contracts worth upwards of £4m. Projects have included the refurbishment of acoustic stage panelling in the Barbican Centre Concert Hall, the design and manufacturing of cabinetry for the Magdalen College Library and a custom-built staircase in London’s Oceanic House. Why were you in the market for a vertical panel saw? We were already running a Striebig Control vertical panel saw alongside a table saw. Both had their advantages but the Striebig was the go-to saw for cutting large sheet material up to 10x4 and up to 38mm thick.

Unlike a table saw, which requires the operator to physically move the material around the saw during the cutting process, the material on a Striebig panel saw remains stationary whilst the cutting head moves. This reduces the amount of handling required, the room needed to perform the operation and the chance of error. It made light work of cutting MDF and Plywood and was rarely not

in use. Following the completion of our newly extended 12,000 sq ft workshop, machinery shop and spray shop, and the continual growth of our team, we were ending up with a queue forming to use the machine. To improve our workflow and to increase the overall efficiency of our machine shop, investing in another Control seemed like a logical option.

“Whilst Striebig saws aren’t the cheapest brand on the market, we believe they offer the best value for money in terms of build quality. Our existing Striebig Control was proving very reliable and, thanks to its user-friendly features, it was helping us maintain a consistency high level of accuracy when cutting panels to size”

67

Why did you choose a second Striebig Control model? Whilst Striebig saws aren’t the cheapest brand on the market, we believe they offer the best value for money in terms of build quality. Our existing Striebig Control was proving very reliable and, thanks to its user-friendly features, it was helping us maintain a consistency high level of accuracy when cutting panels to size. The easy set-up of this machine was also a big advantage. Thanks to standard features like its digital measuring system, you simply input the size you want the panel to be and the saw works out the rest. There’s no need for rulers (which only read in millimetres and not 0.1 or 0.5mm like the saw’s digital measuring device) and, thanks to the saw’s colour-coded touch-screen computer, laser positioning system and adjustable feed speed, the operator can simply follow the saw’s instructions to achieve the perfect cut.

NBJ London’s newest Striebig Control includes a 12” touch screen, automatic beam and saw head positioning and panel end detection as standard. Plus, an optional automatic length stop (EPS – Electronic Positioning System).

Does your new Striebig Control include any new features? We opted for the optional automatic length stop (EPS – Electronic Positioning System). This means the stop move into position and re-sets itself without any manual intervention. For us, this takes another manual task away from the operator and speeds up the cutting cycle. The saw also features an upgraded extraction system. The integrated TRK extraction system is noticeably better, making the cutting process cleaner and quieter. What tasks have been made easier thanks to the Striebig? A lot of our heritage work includes the design and restoration of internal and external doors. We tend to make each door a couple of millimetres bigger and trim them down to make them perfectly square before they are sanded. This trimming process simply can’t be done on a table saw due to the size and weight of the door.

>>

68 PANEL PROCESSING

>>

Panel supports and rollers are standard features on the saw, offering easy handling of materials

Weighing up to 90kg, it would be a threeman operation to manoeuvre a door onto the table saw. The sheer weight of the door could result in the material slipping or the saw blade wobbling, effecting the accuracy and finish of the cut. This is where the design of the Striebig comes into its own. Thanks to the independent movement of the saw head, the Control only requires two-men to place the door onto the machine before the saw gets to work. The result is a clean, precise cut every time.

A Laser indicator for horizontal cuts comes as standard

How easy is the Striebig Control to use? It’s really easy to operate. The automated features have reduced the skill-level needed to use the machine effectively, clearly highlighting the cutting path. We have 20 members of staff that regularly use the two Controls and they are all proficient users. When it was first installed, TM Machinery’s engineers gave us some training on the

machine, talked us though some key do’s and do not’s and gave us advice on how to look after the machine and the blade. You certainly don’t need a lot of experience operating woodworking machinery to be able to use it well. How have you found TM Machinery to work with? We have bought multiple machines from TM Machinery and we go back to them because they know their stuff. We want to invest in machinery that will stand the test of time and work well for us. Striebig’s vertical panel saws offer us reliability, consistency and longevity and with TM’s experts behind us, we know we can count on them if we need help or advice. Thanks to Mark at NBJ London and TM Machinery for their assistance.

Homag’s surface solutions deliver first-class flawless finishes and economical advantages The demand for painted furniture is still at the forefront of interior design, along with the more recent trend for natural and tactile structured surfaces. Such modern interior design trends are raising the bar for the production of surfaces in the furniture industry. The different requirements for high-quality surfaces in furniture manufacturing demand smart production solutions such as those afforded by Homag’s surface solution technology. Trusted worldwide, the technology has been specifically developed to provide faultless finishes time after time while delivering many economical advantages too. To meet the demand for high-quality painted, stained and laminated surface solutions Homag has aligned and expanded its portfolio of coating and laminating technology in recent years. Homag Sprayteq S-100 series: efficient spray coating solutions This series of spray coating solutions extends from manually operated to fully automated equipment and delivers first-class finished surfaces. The range includes flatbed spraying systems, spraying robots, stand-alone machines and extensive finishing lines. For ultimate efficiency, these solutions can be equipped with automated workpiece handling concepts and drying technology. The Sprayteq S-100 series of spray coating

solutions are suitable for use with either water or solvent-based paint, or stain coatings. They bring a multitude of benefits to all types of manufacturers that process solid wood or wood-based panels. Worldwide customers include manufacturers of furniture, kitchens, interior fittings, stair components and doors. The competitive advantages that companies gain by deploying Homag’s specialist spray coating equipment include: • cost reduction due to economical use of coatings (reduced overspray). • high quality, flawless surface finishes. • process consistency thanks to simple settings regardless of the operator (reproducibility). • high flexibility with batch size 1 and fast colour changes. • 2400 parts finished in a shift. • facility space savings – compact machines with small footprints. TrendPANEL achieved significant benefits with Homag Sprayteq S-100 An excellent example of a customer who has benefitted from Homag’s surface solutions technology is trendPANEL based in Löhne, Germany. It specialises in the production of acoustic and relief panels made from wood and MDF. To optimise the company’s painting process, Eckhard Stallmann has used a Homag

Sprayteq S-100 coating machine to paint and stain surfaces automatically since 2018. Commenting on the equipment installation and efficiencies achieved, Echhard said “Switching from manual to semi-automated spray painting was child’s play. Setting up the machine and training the employees took just two days. By investing in the Homag machine, trendPANEL has found an effective solution for a high-quality spray application that exceeded our initial expectations. The equipment purchase has been deemed a complete success, especially in relation to capacity and costs. With Homag’s Sprayteq S-100 we have attained a 60% reduction in production time and 25% reduction in costs, and that’s a conservative calculation.” Flexible and smart solutions for laminating Laminating is experiencing somewhat of a renaissance in the field of decorative finishing of wood-based panels. Today, technical innovations and continuous developments are making laminating a powerful, flexible and reliable finishing procedure. Progress made in using hot-melt glues and in particular reactive PUR is replacing entire generations of glues such as PVA. Improved quality in resistance to moisture and temperature qualify PUR specifically for use as a binding agent between panels and surface films.

71

Homag LAMTEQ F-200 series delivers cost and production efficiencies Homag laminating systems are suitable for a wide range of applications and can coat materials supplied in rolls or sheets. Customers of these highly dependable laminating systems include woodworking shops, industrial manufacturers, furniture part producers and flooring panel manufacturers. Thanks to its modularity and flexibility, as well as the diverse application possibilities of PUR adhesives, Homag’s Lamteq F-200 laminating machine, can be integrated into a variety of system concepts. The handling concept allows the machine to be operated with fewer people and saves operators from physically strenuous lifting, carrying and turning of bulky panels. The partially automated handling solution consists of a vacuum suction rail in the inlet, an automatic panel turner behind the plant and a stack return. With this solution, the entire workpiece transport can be completed by just one person. Together with an operator for laying up the coating material, the laminating unit is safe and convenient for just two people to operate. Furthermore, the optimised part flow increases the productivity of a plant, as walking time and manual parts handling are minimised, enabling the operators to focus on tasks that add value. UV coating systems with renewable raw materials The development department of the coating and stain specialist Hesse from Hamm has succeeded in formulating UV coating systems with a remarkably high proportion of renewable raw materials. At the same time, the user does not have to make any compromises in terms of chemical and mechanical resistance with these environmentally conscious developments. The series was developed for the furniture industry, and especially for furniture and doors. The aim of the development was, in addition to the sustainable formulation, to achieve at least a comparable durability as with conventional UV coating systems. After extensive tests, a 100% roller UV system consisting of colourless and coloured UV varnishes has been created, with which ambitious sustainability goals – such as at IKEA – can be achieved. See Hesse’s article series, ‘Better carbon’. The shares of renewable raw materials, also called Bio Renewable Carbon (BRC), refer to the total amount of carbon contained in the product. This calculation is made, for example, by IKEA, which has set itself the goal of replacing 30% of fossil carbon with renewable shares by 2025. Unlike other representations, the share of natural resources such as water or near-natural fillers and the like is not taken into account in

this calculation, only the replacement of fossil carbon. Positive feedback from the furniture industry, which described the workability as “very good”, encouraged Hesse to submit the solution to the Paint + Varnish Award 2020. The jury

rewarded this innovation with first place in the ‘Best Sustainability Approach’ category. The concept, which won an award last year, could be practically implemented in the furniture and door industry this year. www.hesse-lignal.com

Hesse Wetprotect-Oil – ideal for use in damp rooms The demand for ecological surfaces for high-quality furniture, stairs, parquet floors and other furnishings made of real wood is ongoing – and especially so in combination with a long-lasting, resistant surface treatment with selected oils and waxes. Oiled surfaces are breathable. They absorb air humidity and release it, thus ensuring a healthy indoor climate.

Following this trend, Hesse-Lignal has put together an extensive oil programme. From classic natural oil to coloured oils, oils with modified alkyd resins to raw wood-effect oil, there is something for every application. Hesse deliberately refrains from using compounds containing cobalt, butoxime and biocidal agents. A highlight from the Hesse oil programme is the new Wetprotect-Oil. It is a natural oil mixed with modified alkyd resins. It impregnates the wood fibre particularly well and thus protects the substrate even better from the effects of moisture. The low-viscosity oil has excellent penetration properties and causes the wood to light up well. In addition, the oiled surface is antistatic. The new Wetprotect-Oil can be used for stairs, kitchen and bathroom furniture, and on all common types of wood. Due to its ability to protect the substrate, it is also recommended for use in damp rooms. The oil is applied generously with a spatula, brush, roller or fine abrasive fleece. After an appropriate reaction time, the excess is removed. Depending on whether Wetprotect-Oil is used on its own or in combination with other Hesse oils, it is applied once or twice. This increases the water resistance of the overall finish and protects the wood even better from moisture. Wetprotect-Oil is decopaint compliant, vegan, and fulfils the requirements of DIN EN 73-1 (safety of toys), DIN 53160 part 1 and 2 (saliva and sweat resistance). www.hesse-lignal.com

Sustainable development The research work is the basis from the formulation of S-Cover coatings, the use of resins obtained from renewable resources traces the path of sustainable development helping Sirca to reduce the of fossil resources and the emission of greenhouse gases of production systems. All these activities are in line with the commitments made by 195 nations in Paris (COP21) to combat climate change and encourage interventions and investments for a sustainable low carbon resilient future. The in depth study of the LCA (life cycle analysis) of its production has led sirca to find technical solutions useful for reducing the environmental impact of the components and of each production phase, with the aim of significantly limiting the carbon footprint by reducing the emission of VOC’s ( voluntary organic compounds) and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

A choice according to nature S-Cover combines the skills and the desire to think about tomorrow, respecting nature, the environment and future generations. The use of water and resins derived from renewable resources of plant origin allow the entire product line to look out onto the green world guaranteeing the excellent technical performances of the coatings. The S-Cover coating systems are designed by our technicians to satisfy both the aesthetic functional needs of our customers. Each system (there are specific ones for interior and exterior) is subjected to rigorous and mechanical stress tests , such as natural and artificial ageing, Q-UV exposure (four times higher than standard exposure) permeability to water , exposure to harsh natural conditions. The totality of the tests are in line with the UNI EN 927-1/6 standard used as a reference both to measure the performance

of the coated surfaces and to indicate the minimum values shared and accepted for these products The full range of products covers stains, sealers, primers and lacquers specific to interior and exterior markets are available in both clear and pigmented systems Mark Iliffe, sales and commercial director of Sirca UK, commented: “We are delighted with the uptake on these more environmental friendly coatings and have now taken steps to hold the full range of products in stock for next day delivery. There’s no doubt in my mind this is the future!” Sirca UK has representatives and technical support covering the whole country ready and available to assist with any enquiry and can assist with any field trials. 0116 274 2222 markiliffe@isf.co.uk www.isf.co.uk

Furniture influencer teams up with Lathams for special commission

the furniture makers’friend

James Latham has commissioned a prominent influencer to design a collection of bespoke furniture using the latest innovative materials.

S

ean Evelegh is the first furniture ambassador appointed by Lathams. His brief is to demonstrate how some of the more unusual and exclusive products within the Lathams portfolio can be used creatively in furniture design. The partnership will see the firm supply a range of materials to Sean to create a series of one-off projects. These include Valchromat, a high performance HDF (effectively a dense MDF) available in a range of colours, WISA Birch, a strong and lightweight plywood, and UPM Grada Ply, a thermoformable plywood. Moving forward, Sean will also venture into the world of Solid Surfaces. The thermoformable materials look like stone or marble but can be worked and machined with standard woodworking tools. Perfect for furniture making, but currently underused, Sean intends to bring his expansive thinking to the material.

different while maintaining the integrity of the material?

“I’m really interested in curves and how wood can be bent and shaped in interesting ways. When combined with high quality laminates and veneers there is scope for some really beautiful and effective finishes.”

“It’s one of the most exciting things about the Lathams partnership – I’m getting to select products from their wide catalogue and I can make anything I want with them.” It is not just the crafting techniques that Sean is modernising. While studying at the prestigious Rycotewood Furniture Centre he launched a YouTube channel. Four years later he has nearly 30,000 subscribers. “It’s great that I can talk to people all over the world and show them the beauty of woodworking,” Sean said. “I find it really fulfilling when I get comments from viewers saying that I’ve taught them to do something or have inspired them to create their own designs.”

Sean explained that the ability to experiment and make things by hand was what attracted him to woodwork in the first place. “I love experimenting with different processes and new materials and I’ll often create prototypes before progressing to the main piece. Even at a small scale, you get a sense of how the material will shape and perform.”

He added: “Woodworking is a tactile process, steeped in tradition. There are techniques that were used by ancient civilisations that we still use today. My approach is to take these old crafting techniques and look for a contemporary spin. How can I make something

Tortoise or hare, the MINIPRESS TOP from Blum has speeds to meet any needs MINIPRESS top is now available in the UK, with even more features to aid all vertical and horizontal drilling operations within a single machine. Blum launched the first version of MINIPRESS in 1984, but it has come a long way since then, and the latest version, available in the UK from September, is the most versatile yet. MINIPRESS top means only one machine for all vertical and horizontal drilling operations. The horizontal drilling unit of MINIPRESS top allows precision drilling operations, making it useful for dowels and connectors. Speed and depth have been enhanced, with a new feature whereby, after breaking the drilling surface at high speed to avoid splintering, the drill will slow down to prevent burning, giving a much more precise, cleaner hole. New features enable fast and accurate handling, helping the user optimise work processes for more precision, efficiency and quality. Combined with EASYSTICK for dynamic handling of the X and Y axes, the MINIPRESS top is “a perfect package” for all drilling operations on cabinets, doors and fronts.

89

Services included As always with Blum, service is of utmost importance, and the technical team is closely involved with the sales and commissioning process. There are a number of set-up requirements, such as a three-phase power supply and pneumatic air supply, and the technical department will be in touch to ensure everything is in order. The team is also highly involved in the training process, which, although relatively easy, is certainly necessary. Someone from the department will accompany the machine and help with set-up, and will customise the training so the MINIPRESS top is ready for use from day one. As the machine is so versatile, it has an optional full suite of swappable heads that allow for different drilling patterns – customers may need additional training, which, of course, Blum is happy to provide free of charge. Twelve-month, three-year and five-year services are included in the cost of the machine, as Blum recommends that it should be serviced regularly. If used and serviced correctly, the machine should last a lifetime – MINIPRESS version 1s are still in use today. 01908 285700 www.blum.com

Ney’s most cost-effective solution for a seamless edge

Pre-glued edging with matching glue

Ney is now offering a colour-matched glue when ordering pre-glued edging. By matching the glue to the edging and the panel, it will give a “never-seen-before” seamless edge, says Ney, therefore greatly improving the aesthetic quality of the finish. Ney Airtronic edgebanding promises to provide a seamless edge while also providing some of the best bonding criteria for MFC and MDF. This is because the coated edgeband is knurled, and has an optimum adhesive gram weight which anchors deeply into the porous chipboard. The EBM KDP 606 Airtronic uses hot air instead of a messy glue pot, and has all the premilling and finishing stations required for “the perfect edge”. This unique coating process is prepared inhouse at Ney.

The significant optical quality makes Airtronic by EBM affordable for smallto medium-sized workshops

Titus launches space-efficient

Cabinet hardware expert, Titus, has launched a second-generation range of its popular Tekform double-wall drawers. The new slimline versions feature a sleek and visuallyappealing design, and have 14mm side panels that maximise efficient utilisation of drawer space. They also incorporate the precision engineered Titus hydraulic dampers to ensure a reliable and consistent soft closing action, combined with low pull-out force. Tekform slimline drawers are available in three heights – 70, 145 and 182mm – and can be supplied in a range of visually appealing

finishes that ideally complement contemporary furniture designs. A further key benefit is that they use the same drilling pattern for runners as their predecessors, which facilitates mounting in existing products and designs. Drawers are fast and easy to assemble, thanks to the EasyFix locking system used for the front-panel connector, which requires only hand insertion and a quarter of a turn with a screwdriver to lock the panel securely in place. Reliable life-long ConfidentClose soft closing is assured by the use of the renowned Titus single-direction precision engineered hydraulic

dampers, which smoothly slow down the linear movement of the drawer as it reaches the closed position but offer minimal resistance to movement when the drawer is being opened. Installation of the drawers within the cabinet is fast and straightforward. Extended tolerances in cabinet construction can be accommodated without compromising accurate alignment, smooth and silent operation and excellent stability in the open position. In addition, variations of up to ±1mm in bottom panel width size are acceptable. uk.titusplus.com

Ostermann with new surfaces – creative design for walls and furniture surfaces Edging specialist Ostermann has long been established as an expert in other industryrelated fields, too. Their innovative furniture design products strike a strong chord with the market. Now, the assortment has been updated once more. The natural furniture and wall surfaces are versatile, lightweight and easy to process. Type in the search item #decorsinrolls on www.ostermann.eu to view all products and read up on their processing.

Whether in shopfitting and trade fair construction or in private interior design: thanks to Ostermann’s diverse surface assortment, furniture makers can swiftly endow rooms and furniture with an individual flair. A growing desire for natural materials is recognised here, combined with the benefits of a low-weight product. Applied to a workpiece or a wall, they can more than compete with their solid counterparts.

RollBeton Smooth: very smooth new concrete surface for furniture To implement a loft look off-the-roll on furniture, Ostermann has just launched new colours of its concrete decor RollBeton smooth. The anthracite and light natural versions are distinguished by a particularly smooth and even finish with excellent colour consistency, suited especially for furniture surfaces. Only natural sand is used as a raw material in the production of Ostermann’s RollBeton. Some air pockets add depressions to the look. The decor surface on a roll RollBeton smooth is available in dimensions of 3000 x 1000 mm and with a thickness of 2mm. RollBeton with boarding: striking eye-catchers for shopfitting The industrial or loft look can be described as positively ‘uncouth’. A little rough around the edges, the raw concrete look remains a preferred stylistic element in modern interior design. There are even two striking RollBeton variants with boarding for eye-catchers in shopfitting or trade fair construction: with plank widths of either 100 or 200 mm. A mineral substance is used to apply the handmade structures of rough sawn planks onto a thin fibre glass matt. The one-component mineral material is flexible, tear- and waterresistant. The decor surface on a roll RollBeton with boarding is available in dimensions of 1000 x 3000 mm and with a thickness of up to 4mm. RollTravertin: industrial chic from limestone The decor surface on a roll, RollTravertin, was freshly added to the range. Its dark-grey colour fits the style of the popular RollBeton surfaces. Unlike these, however, it is not a concrete surface but an imitation of limestone, more precisely the imitation of Roman travertine – porous stone that forms in freshwater springs. Back in antiquity, this travertine was already used for numerous buildings in Rome and other Italian cities. The new surfaces are available at Ostermann in rolls of 1200 x 2800 mm, and with a thickness of only 1.5mm.

The even finish of the smooth new RollBeton concrete decors makes them a perfect furniture surface. But they also make quite an impression as wall cladding! The image shows the decor surface on a roll RollBeton smooth in “light natural”.

Furniture linoleum offers a wide array of design options. A new video on OstermannTV shows how to process the natural furniture surface.

Furniture linoleum: suits all requirements Furniture linoleum is a traditional material from plant-based sustainable raw materials. It is an ideal furniture surface: easy-care, resilient and available in many colours. Lately, soft pastel shades and muted earth tones experience an upward trend: they induce a friendly and cosy impression. Furniture makers can obtain the material from Ostermann in three different production levels that suit all requirements. For those looking to make their work very easy, customers can order furniture fronts with a linoleum

surface ready for assembly via the Ostermann configurators. “If you want to press the material yourself, but prefer to avoid the cutting effort, the Ostermann configurators are still the way to go,” explains Ostermann UK MD, Stephen Parsons. “Here customers can order customised linoleum cuts online. If you want to do all processing steps yourself, you can order all linoleum decors from Ostermann in rolls and by the metre.” 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Fletcher Wood Products uses Cabinet Vision automation to simplify complex repeat commercial projects

Making manufacturing smarter is all in a day’s work at Fletcher Wood Products, a 59-year-old custom commercial case and millwork company that has thrived for nearly six decades by continuously improving its processes. Located in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the company was founded in 1961 by Bill Fletcher, an experienced craftsman who built a business on turning out high-quality, custom products. His son, Clark Fletcher, is now at the helm of the company – he utilises modern technologies to remain competitive, while continuing the company’s legacy of manufacturing top-notch goods. A firm believer in the power of technology to help increase efficiency and reduce error, Fletcher implemented the Cabnetware solution for cabinetmakers in 1986 and, being an early adopter of CNC technology, acquired his first CNC router in 1993.

While Cabnetware helped Fletcher and his staff drastically cut time devoted to manually creating cutlists, shop drawings and assembly sheets, the integration of CNC machinery was a significant game-changer. In 2007, Fletcher made the switch from Cabnetware to the Cabinet Vision Screen to Machine (S2M Center) solution, which delivers more robust design and project-planning functionality, as well as the ability to generate accurate NC code at the click of a button. “The challenge is different today than it was when my father started the business,” says Clark. “For me, the challenge has more to do with the introduction of computers and software. You can tell when it’s time to change the way you do things – and today you need to use technology to stay in business.” To begin a project in Cabinet Vision, the team at Fletcher enters the dimensions of the space

in which the final product will be installed, and then virtually builds the project within that space. Once the project is drawn, shop drawings, cutlists and assembly sheets can be generated based on the design. Among the Cabinet Vision functions utilised most often by Fletcher Wood Products is the ability to apply its own object intelligence to completed designs. Object intelligence eases the process of making design changes, including the ability to resize parts – even when they are included in assemblies. When part of an assembly is changed, the rest of the assembly will automatically adjust to that change. “You add a part to the system, and you automatically add intelligence so that you can grow or shrink the part as the design progresses,” Clark says. “You can reuse it and change the overall dimension, and the other parts change with it.”

97

Cabinet Vision allows users to save and reuse any process, including those that include object intelligence. Reusing processes is especially helpful for parts that are very similar or identical, but any process can be edited and saved as an additional version of a previously saved process. Keeping a process library makes it simple to save and select processes as needed. “The most immediate return on being able to reuse parts and projects is that, for 75% of projects, you have to go back and change something,” says Clark. “The little bit of time you have to spend adding intelligence will save you time – without a doubt.” For Clark, the proof is, as they say, in the pudding. Having utilised Cabinet Vision to varying degrees to complete projects for four new 801 Chophouse restaurant locations, he has saved and reused processes for several project elements. As solution functionality and his knowledge of the software has grown, he has increased his use of the system to tackle the tougher project aspects. As such, 95% of his work on the last restaurant location was performed with Cabinet Vision. “As Cabinet Vision continued to be developed, new features were added,” says Clark. “I think that kind of continued development is great, and shows that they’re listening to their customers.” The four 801 Chophouse projects were completed in 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2019. Cabnetware was used for cabinetry on the 2006 and 2011 projects, while Cabinet Vision was used in 2011 to produce only the panelling for the 2011 job. In 2016, Cabinet Vision was used to build both cabinets and panelling, and in 2019 its use was increased to include the production of cabinets, panels, moulding, booth assemblies, oval bar walls, a bar top, bar soffits, window shutters, wine tower-panels and display units, and applied arch frames. “In 2016, we used Cabinet Vision to create custom wine cabinets with special operations, as well as wall-panel assemblies with the necessary machining operations, and saved everything to the Cabinet Vision library,” says Clark. “In 2019, we were able to use the work from 2016 and enhanced the previous Cabinet

Vision work by adding mouldings to the wallpanel assemblies to aid in accurate accounting of moulding quantities.” For the 2019 project, Clark created full booth assemblies that included wall framing, wall panels with intelligent machining, frame assemblies for glass panels, and all necessary moulding. To design the restaurant’s intricate oval bar, the company used computer-aided-design (CAD) software, and imported the file into Cabinet Vision. “We used the CAD import feature to create the oval bar and all related parts to create all shaped parts and assemblies, which included an oval bar top, shaped bar rail, bar face panels, and shaped soffit panels.” He also used Cabinet Vision to create a sliding shutter system, and assigned object intelligence to its top and bottom tracks, side jambs, casing materials, and parametric shutter assemblies. The intelligent shutter assembly allows for changing the slat sizes, slat spacing and slat angles by using custom attributes. “One big time-saver for us was creating assemblies for all of the applied wall moulding frames that we supply,” says Clark. “This project had over 150 wall frames with 16 different radius top pieces. The assemblies allowed us to account for all of the straight moulding needed

for the frames.” As each assembly included a shaped hardwood part for a curved upper rail, Clark saved a significant amount of time by sending those complex parts to the S2M Center, where true-shape nesting was used to efficiently nest the profiles. “Those 150-plus frame tops were optimised and code created in minutes, versus the several days needed on our previous projects to draw arches, create toolpaths, and manually create nests on various material sizes,” he says. “I can’t say enough about the power of the tool that we have in Cabinet Vision and all that we can do with it. You’re only limited by your imagination.” www.cabinetvision.com

Among the Cabinet Vision functions utilised most often by Fletcher Wood Products is the ability to apply their own object intelligence to completed designs. Specialist joinery and fit-out contractor looks to Microvellum software to solve efficiency challenges

With a reputation as a professional joinery and fit-out contractor, Martek has been in the business of designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke joinery for nearly four decades. The company, based in Croydon, specialises in high-end, commercial, healthcare and cinema interiors. Martek’s 40,000ft2 production facility, based in South London, combines the latest software and machinery for furniture manufacturing, combined with traditional skills and craftmanship. Like many manufacturers today, Martek is faced with maintaining competitive prices while juggling the rise in material costs, project

delays, and the high demands from architects to continually push the limits of manufacturing. “In the early days, it became apparent that in order to take total control of quality and ensure we could meet deadlines, we needed a solution to manage the entire manufacturing process,” explains Derek Galloway, MD at Martek. “We work on a lot of high-profile projects, from penthouses to state-of-the-art cinemas, corporate offices and healthcare facilities. Having software that can help us handle the complexity of these designs and efficiently meet the demands of our ever-changing production requirements and schedules is key.” One of the of the biggest challenges for Martek

right now, related to the pandemic, is cost increases from suppliers. “Nearly every cost is increasing. We are seeing an average increase of +20% across the board, yet our clients expect our prices to stay the same. For us, the solution to this problem is to focus on efficiency gains.” To help combat these challenges, Martek, and its team of six drafters, relies on software from Microvellum, an AutoCAD-based design, engineering and production platform developed for woodworkers. “Our Microvellum software has been an instrumental component of our design and manufacturing process here at Martek for the

99

past 14 years. We work with a lot of architects, and the fact that Microvellum is essentially an extension of AutoCAD provides us with a seamless transition from the design and approval stage, right into the production stage of a project. “As you can imagine, our work is very bespoke. Whether we’re working on a custom reception desk, the one we built for the technology campus at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, a theatre display, or even the interior of a hospital, our projects can be quite unique. Microvellum helps us and our clients visualise product prototypes in 3D, which reduces errors and the time it takes to send those prototypes to production, since all the information needed to manufacture the product

is contained within the drawing. “Our customisable product library is a huge asset for us. It includes the latest hardware and materials, which makes ordering easy and efficient. Over the years, our engineers have grown our library in so many ways with new products and options to make it easier for our drafters to detail unique projects. “Sustainability is important to us. With Microvellum, we can process multiple projects at once, optimising parts for our Biesse SKILL and Biesse Rover K FT CNC machines simultaneously. This helps minimise material waste and saves time for our production team.” Through innovations in software, machinery, and processes, Martek has created a business

model for success. Recently, this model has fuelled its expansion into yet another market, creating a division of the company that helps eliminate single-use plastic from the food supply chain, building flexible furniture products and displays. “We expect the road ahead to continue to be challenging – it always is. Our success will be measured by the way in which we rise to combat those challenges. And for us, we can be confident that we’ve built business partnerships that will help us tackle anything that comes our way,” concludes Derek. 0800 680 0669 www.microvellum.com

New range of SCM machining centres for solid wood SCM says it is changing the rules of the game for machining doors, windows, stairs and solid wood elements. At the heart of the new Accord 500 and 600 models and the upgrade of the Morbidelli m200 lies the need for customers to regain control over their time, making significant gains in productivity while still achieving excellent quality on finishing. Behind the claim chosen by SCM for the launch of its new range of machining centres for solid wood: ‘According to Wood’, lies the meaning and value of a project called upon to launch a new era in machining doors, windows, stairs and much more. ‘According to Wood’ describes SCM’s desire to provide a vast range of technical solutions that

are even more effective and better performing, but above all designed by wood, because they have technical specifications and performances that are fully in line with market challenges. At the same time, ‘According’ also brings to mind accord – a long history of successes and know-how like that of SCM’s range of machining centres for drilling and routing of the same name, which has been a benchmark for the industry for over 15 years. The same range is now being expanded and renewed from a completely new and strategic point of view, to stay abreast of the times and to rightly value customers’ time, by optimising and speeding up production processes, while simultaneously guaranteeing excellent finishing quality.

In fact, it has been time that has mostly led the revolution of SCM’s machining centres. Each technical feature is designed to save time at the most crucial stages for each industry manufacturer – from machine programming to set-up, from the machining process to maintenance. “Our aim was to give our customers, facing increasingly more complex problems when machining solid wood, an answer from specialists capable of finding precise solutions for each individual request. These new technologies considerably simplify the everyday work of operators, making it more efficient and, as a result, ensuring an even greater return on investment,” underlines SCM’s business manager for machining centres, Bruno Di Napoli.

New Accord 500/600 machining centres SCM increases productivity by +30% compared to market standards thanks to the ‘gantry’ structure with closed frame that, in line with the accord project, allows for sturdiness and precision to be achieved even at maximum advancement speed and with the most difficult machining jobs. The routing speed is further increased and now exceeds 15m/min, with the new five-axis KPX machining unit with Hiteco 17 kW electrospindle, designed to always enable the most complex operations to be carried out rapidly and accurately. Even the production cycle times are dramatically reduced with the exclusive BRC-S unit, which is even more flexible and compact, and allows the user to complete all the cutting, routing and drilling machinings typical of window components. Another significant new entry is the more-than 100 tools readily available and easily ready for use with the new Caddy 35 storage, unique both for its capacity as well as its structure, because it is integrated into the machining centre without increasing the machine’s bulk. Tool management is further optimised and simplified by the new Maestro Power TMS software, integrated with SCM’s Maestro suite. Thanks to this program, which maximises the ability of the storage and optimises programming, there is no need for the operator to waste time and energy in looking for the most suitable tool – the software will identify and indicate the tool’s exact position in the storage, thus minimising machining times. Cleaning the surrounding area is another crucial matter when machining solid wood and, in order to deal with the problem, SCM has devised a new shavings conveyor, automatically positioned in accordance with the machining program, which can ensure maximum suction efficiency under any condition.

One range, greater demand The ‘According to Wood’ project is offered to the market with a range that fully satisfies its various production needs. Accord 500 combines tradition, simplicity and compactness, without sacrificing high technology, offering the “ultimate power for wood applications”, delivered by the new fiveaxis machining unit with 17kW electro-spindle and the possibility of choosing a Pro-Space configuration without perimeter protection, which is ideal for those who do not have a great deal of space available. Accord 600 is the project solution that involves no compromise on performance – with a view to reducing production times as much as possible in any application field, it offers a completely new, hyper-performing machining unit, fitted with as many as three separate units. The four-axis and JQX five-axis electrospindles, respectively from 21-13.5kW with separate on-board storages, allow for tool change while the machine is running and even during machining of the separate front unit, with BSC-S or head to drill, as required. All is aimed at saving time – which is the key concept throughout the entire range.

The upgrade of the Morbidelli m200 all-in-one technology machining centre The morbidelli m200 range, a benchmark for CNC machining centres across the globe, confirms its technical features as the most popular on the market – like its solid structure, its 250mm component passage, its Prisma KT five-axis, and the FlexMatic table which ensures that all kinds of machining for panels can be achieved, but also those for solid wood.

This machining centre has now been enhanced with new features that are ideal especially for the production of window elements. Cycle time reduction is achieved with the FlexMatic table, which becomes even more flexible when its movements are made simultaneously under the control of SCM’s Maestro CNC software. As well as this, the performance of the piece-gripping system has been further enhanced, thanks to the Multigrip

clamp, designed to specifically machine elements for windows and doors, which allows the workpieces to be positioned and blocked faster and more reliably. The JQX machining unit has been enhanced by an innovative shavings conveyor, specifically designed to achieve maximum cleaning even in the presence of significant removals. This is controlled by NC not only in rotation, following the machining direction, but also in a vertical position – which means the conveyor can always position itself directly in front of the jet of shavings to capture it as effectively as possible. Confirming the focus on the world of windows and doors, even on the Morbidelli m200, the new BRC-S unit that allows for horizontal blade cuts and drilling and routing is achieved as quickly as possible, leaving the five-axis spindle with just the main profiling and tenoning operations to do. www.scmgroup.com

Best of British leads the support of UK’s carbon-neutral economy One of the UK’s most established bed manufacturers is continuing to develop its environmental sustainability policy, by generating its own electricity through solar power. Reaching a huge milestone, Sleepeezee, which has maintained its carbon-neutral status for four years, is having 665 energy-saving solar panels fitted across its entire 1130m2 manufacturing facility in Kent. The panels will help generate power for 25% of the manufacturing plant’s energy, while the remaining 75% will be purchased through renewable electricity. To carry out the project, Sleepeezee joined forces with Hemel

Hempstead-based solar equipment supplier, BeBa Energy UK. Steve Warren, MD at Sleepeezee, says: “This is an important step for the company, as it is helping us to further reduce the carbon footprint of our manufacturing operations. “Renewable energy is a crucial component in the UK’s plans to be a carbon-neutral economy by 2050, and the manufacturing industry has an important role to play in helping the Government to achieve this. At a £180,000 investment in total for Sleepeezee, we are fully committed to driving the business forward in more considered and sustainable practices.”

BeBa director, Shaun Beattie, comments: “It is an honour to work alongside Sleepeezee on this exciting project. Climate change is a threat to us all and therefore the responsibility of everyone including businesses and individuals, to play their part in reducing carbon emissions. “By choosing to power a significant portion of their operations via solar panels, not only will Sleepeezee take control of a proportion of their energy costs, they will make a considerable dent in their carbon footprint.” Solar panels capture the sun’s energy and turn it into electricity. This latest undertaking by Sleepeezee will contribute more than 46,000kg of CO2 reduction per year and create a lifetime of carbon savings equating to almost six million miles driven by car, five million miles flown by plane and the planting of over 30,000 trees. www.sleepeezee.com

SalvaPush 2000 – a wood-cutting system for Industry 4.0 The woodworking processing industry’s evolution to a fully digital environment has seen technology improve by leaps and bounds. Launched in early 2019 by Salvamac’s CrossCutting Division as an evolution of more of 20 years in the field, which focuses on the cutting and optimisation of wood, SalvaPush 2000 is the group’s flagship cross-cutting optimising saw. SalvaPush 2000 is ideally suited to cut single wood pieces with length optimisation, as well as to cut boards using a prefixed cutting cycle. It can be applied for use in a range of solid wood market segments, such as windows and doors, furniture, beams and houses, flooring, sofas, glue panels and lamella wood, pallets, garden furniture and children’s toys, among others. The machine can be easily integrated with other machinery and data within a factory, as it can receive cutting lists directly from the office, and connect to multi-blade machines or moulders via automatic loading and unloading systems. The instantaneous graphics and a large touchscreen, complemented with digital communication among all electric components, allows fast and easy data entry.

Towards Industry 4.0 Besides easy integration with the company’s management, the recent developments in barcode data importing and the related JIT management systems (from the development of the customer’s order to the finished product) make it a unique solution for single-batch production processes. An operator is able to easily manage a single piece by loading the pieces after reading the relative barcode, and leaving the management to the supervisor – additional software that manages the entire data process. Flexible and advanced technological solutions allow, in fact, both upstream and downstream communication with the company software. SalvaPush 2000 comes with a brand-new software version, easily and completely manageable by anyone – like a smartphone, with website graphics and all the convenience of data setting via a large touchscreen, and with electronic components being connected in digital communication. Moreover, there are new exclusive mechanical solutions, both for the cutting and the pusher systems, which become part of the complete

digital management of the machines’ communication systems – not only within their electronic components, but, above all, towards external IT systems. The application of SalvaPush 2000 in the construction component and special pallet sectors fully confirms the recent developments. The new and exclusive mechanical solutions are also present in both cutting and pushing systems.

A special system, with a 55mm-wide toothed belt and 33 strips of hard steel, allows high precision and capacity. The aluminium beam is big and solid – at a height of 135mm and width of 120mm, it is fixed in a steel structure in two parts for better solidity and reliability. The beam is also covered and protected by a special steel cover. All this guarantees a long machine life

with no dust and service issues. Case in point The production of sofas is sometimes is a complicated process due to the variety of models offered. A small batch size or even batch size one is also not uncommon – it is thus necessary to work job by job. Compared

to older and more traditional cutting systems, the SalvaPush 2000 has become a cost-cutting machine for a major producer. The yield of the wood has increased about +9%, the number of operators needed is about half than before, and the business no longer needs skilled operators – cutting can be done in complete safety and statistical data can be easily generated. Creator Christian Salvador defines Salvapush 2000 as a real revolution in the market’s approach: “Our network and its strength will allow us to introduce new products for the solid wood industry, but at a price that allows more companies to choose the technological path. The strategy is clear – to optimise the process and use every possible ‘country advantage’ to produce machines with the highest quality and affordable prices for the customer.” Looking forward The market growth of Salvamac is increasing steadily and, despite the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, has increased another +50%. At the moment, the company’s main markets are in Europe, first of all the UK. Moving forward, the next goal for Salvamac in 2022 is to develop the UK market, increasing the share of the market and becoming its true leader. Expansion of the range of products, innovation and investment are the ingredients of success. www.salvamac.com

Timber supply tension will ease given time, say major associations A joint market statement from the Confederation of Timber Industries (CTI) and Swedish Wood points to a likely easing of supply tension in the timber market as the pandemic eases. With timber prices having accelerated in 2021 amidst skyrocketing demand, there has been concern how this will affect the thousands of businesses which timber supports. Structural softwood, a product with significant price rises, is an essential material to timber frame, a commonly used, low-carbon, modern method of construction using high-tech manufacturing. By partnering with Swedish Wood, which represents the largest exporters of structural softwood to the UK, the CTI is seeking to provide a complete picture, from forest through to enduser. Drawing on a wide array of data (cited in the

report), the market statement seeks to help generate a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between supply, demand, and prices in timber.

2020 and a +17.2% increase on 2019.

Key insights from the report include:

Significant growth is projected for timber frame While timber frame may see a short-term impact from the current market tension, the outlook remains strong, with both the market size and share to grow for timber frame.

Demand is on the rise Overall construction activity is expanding at the fastest pace since June 1997. Timber and joinery sales alone were up +30.5% in Q1 2020 on Q1 2019, and construction output is set to grow +12.9% in 2021.

It is highly likely the market will soon stabilise Market analysis shows the current price increases are far outside the bounds of normal levels over the past 13 years, suggesting a price correction is very likely to follow.

Record amounts of softwood are being imported The cumulative volume of softwood imported into the UK between January and April was 2,678,000m3. This was a +50.6% increase on

Alex Goodfellow, chair of the CTI, says: “With this joint market statement we are firmly responding to any who would raise doubts about the value proposition of timber – which is here to stay.

UPDATES 115

“Timber is the only mainstream, renewable, and low-carbon building material, and it remains essential to the UK solving the housing, climate and biodiversity crises. Timber frame is a proven, quick, high-quality, cost-effective and low-carbon modern method of construction, which is unmatched across the wider sector. “Of course, this has been a difficult time for some manufacturers, who are not currently able to get enough timber in hand to meet all their customers’ needs. However, as a supply chain we are determined to fulfil all our commitments, and even amidst this unusual situation, we will deliver – the new housebuilding industry can rest assured that timber frame will continue to be key in helping them take on the housing crisis. “Our message to you, as well as the wider market, is that this situation is temporary – and our £10b supply chain will continue to advance.” David Hopkins, chief executive of the Timber

Trade Federation, says: “There have been a number of misunderstandings within the market about how supply, demand and price interact – now, we hope with this report to provide greater clarity. “Overall construction activity has expanded at the fastest pace in 24 years, and with double-digit growth for the construction industry predicted in 2021 there will be challenges. Demand growing this quickly amidst a global pandemic has given little time to recover, or rampup production, and this has been seen throughout the construction products industry. The response of the supply chain to meet this demand has been incredible, with the UK importing +50% more softwood between January and April 2021 as compared to last year. We are optimistic that the current extremes will abate in the not-too-distant future, and we will return to a more recognisable balance between demand and supply.”

Mathias Fridholm

Mathias Fridholm, chief executive of Swedish Wood, says: “The UK remains an extremely important market to our members, with firmly established business relationships reaching back decades. “Our members are working hard to meet the needs of the UK market, and are already exporting more timber to the UK now than at any time in the past decade. While it may be difficult for some now, we expect market forces will mean that a more ‘normal’ balance between supply and demand will resume in the near future. We will continue to work with our partners in the UK to provide timely information, with communication essential for overcoming any tensions in the market.” www.cti-timber.org

Beaded cabinet face-frames The heart of a home is the kitchen, and a cabinet with a beaded face frame immediately conveys a high level of quality and craftsmanship and distinctly sets it apart from other utilitarian overlay-door cabinets. The most common way to manufacture beaded face frames is to use square profiles and to apply the bead profile separately. The major disadvantage to this system is the time required to produce a complete frame. Apart from time consumption, mismatched grain and mitre joints due to inconsistent bead profiles can be a concern. Any of these faults are

only highlighted by being painted. A dissatisfied customer or a call-out will damage not only the cabinetmaker’s reputation but also the bottom line. Clearly, the most efficient way to produce beaded face frames is to start with prebeaded profiles. All of the above-mentioned disadvantages are then eliminated from the start. Several systems have been devised, but their set-up and calibration are a time-consuming process and their cost (over €18,000 plus tooling) puts them out of the reach of most bespoke cabinetmakers.

The solution The Hoffmann Beaded Face Frame System offers cabinetmakers of all sizes a fast, precise and efficient method to manufacture beaded face frames, whether it is in single or series production. Starting with pre-beaded profiles, stiles are notched in pairs and the rails are coped on a fixed blade, Morso guillotine-style notching machine. These NF series machines are manufactured for Hoffmann by Dan-List (Morso) in Denmark. They cut all kinds of wood, plastic, MDF and

119

HOFFMANN-SCHWALBE.DE

plywood, and leave the cut surface of the profile perfectly smooth and accurate, requiring no further preparation before joining. For a standard stile-to-rail connection, this operation takes about five seconds with Hoffmann’s manual foot-operated notching machine – and the automatic model is even faster! The second step takes place on the Hoffmann MU-3 dovetail routing machine, equipped with special fixtures for beaded and notched material. Dovetail keyways are routed into all mating parts and the frames are assembled by applying some glue and inserting Hoffmann

Dovetail Keys. These keys draw the parts together to form a tight, secure and permanent joint. No large clamping tables or bar clamps are required, and the frames can be finished immediately upon assembly. All dovetail routing machines are set up with a complete fixture set to process stiles and rails, but can also be used to process regular mitre joints and butt joints. They are also available in Digital and Pneumatic models, which increase accuracy and speed.
