Despite everything, spring always ushers in a striking effervescence as we look forward to busier schedules, plan for more events and shift into another gear. As we tumble through April and into May, the return of Interzum and Ligna is most welcome. The twin German events –which together create an international beacon for innovation and development in our industry – are returning from their pandemic-enforced slumber to deliver a much needed shot-in-thearm for those who relish getting to grips with our industry on a face to face basis.

The best trade show fortnight in the calendar begins with the Cologne event for fittings, components and materials runs from May 9-12th (Tues-Fri). Then we travel north east for Ligna in Hanover which takes place from May 15-19th (Mon-Thurs). Typically, Ligna delivers a sea of innovation and upgrades from manufacturers and suppliers of machinery, equipment, tooling, dust extraction and the software side of things.

Both events now sport digital versions of their events, which are quite fantastic, full of insight and very convenient. However, for me, nothing quite compares to physically seeing the best of our suppliers, side by side with their peers, where visitors can get hands-on with competing suppliers’ products, comparing the market in one location over the course of a few days. Our preview begins on page 43.

Elsewhere in the magazine you will struggle not to notice the impressive profile and celebration of one of the UK’s most respected woodworking machinery suppliers, JJ Smith, as they mark 100 years of delivering innovation and service for their customers. We also have features on Surfacing & Decorative Panels as well as Saws, Blades & Cutting Technology delivering up to the minute insight into these busy sectors, and of course Products and Updates to round things off.

I hope you enjoy the issue.

The space, which is due for completion later this year, will include several Holz-Her machines, including a 6015 Linea Beam Saw, Streamer XL C edgebander, Artea 1030 edgebander and 1254 Sector vertical panel saw. In addition to this, customers will also be able to visit Holz-Her’s headquarters in Abingdon to view different models and specifications.

Holz-Her’s range fits this model perfectly.”

with the very best brands in the market. Holz-Her offers a much sought-after, premium range that fits seamlessly into our existing portfolio. Whilst it is not always suitable for the price-driven shopper, Holz-Her’s customers get the very best in panel processing technology at their fingertips and this is backed by a knowledgeable and experienced sales team and a dedicated service department. This gives us and our customers the upmost confidence in HolzHer’s range and the level of quality they offer. STARK Group completes major acquisition in the UK in great time

The separation of Saint-Gobain Building Distribution UK Ltd. has been completed following an accelerated process. STARK Group A/S enters the UK market ahead of plans.

STARK Group has completed the acquisition of more than 600 dedicated builders’ merchant, specialist, and distribution branches and a major timber importer and distributor. The separation from former owner Saint-Gobain UK Ltd has been accelerated. Hence, the acquisition closes on the meteorological calendar’s official first day of spring.

When announcing the acquisition on 12th December 2022, the parties planned for a closing date later this year.

Group CEO Søren P. Olesen says: ”We are very pleased to have completed this acquisition in great time, having announced the deal in mid-December. We look very much forward to welcoming nearly 9000 colleagues and many new tradespeople to our customer list in the UK. We have a strategy that successfully focuses on professional tradespeople and the renovation and maintenance market. The UK is an attractive market with solid population growth, one of Europe’s oldest housing stocks, and a huge potential for energy renovations.”

“We are facing a challenging transition year, but we have acquired a company that we can make thrive and grow. The more

than 600 branches and distribution centres are in good locations across the entire UK. We will invest in the business, the customers, the employees, and the distribution. We have acquired a company with whom we can continue our growth journey.”

The acquisition takes STARK Group’s total pro forma annual net sales to around €9b. The combined company has more than 20,000 employees and approximately 1150 dedicated builders’ merchants, specialists, and distribution centres. STARK Group is a leading retailer and distributor of heavy building materials across Europe and operates in the Nordics, Germany, Austria and now the UK.

STARK Group in the UK will be known as STARK Building Materials UK Ltd. The company comprises some of the UK’s leading brands in retail and distribution of

building materials to professional craftsmen. These include the builders’ merchant Jewson, strong local brands such as Gibbs & Dandy and JP Corry in Northern Ireland, specialist brands Jewson Civils Frazer, Minster and as International Timber.

A spokesperson for SaintGobain says: “We’re pleased to

have successfully and efficiently completed the divestment of Saint-Gobain Building Distribution and International Timber to STARK Group. We wish our former colleagues and STARK Group every success for the future. With this divestment, Saint-Gobain no longer has any distribution businesses in the UK”.

Mirka Ltd (Finland) celebrates 80 years of pioneering surface finishing

Mirka (UK) Ltd parent company, Mirka Ltd (Finland), is celebrating its 80th anniversay this year, growing to become one of the world’s leading manufacturers in the surface finishing industry.

For eight decades, Mirka has been at the forefront of innovation in abrasives manufacturing, including pioneering dust-free sanding with the launch of Abranet® in 2001 as well as several award-winning power tools such as the DEROS.

Mirka was founded in 1943 in Helsinki by the engineer Onni

Aulo, but due to the continuation of WWII, production did not start until 1946. Headquartered in the heart of rural Ostrobothnia, Finland, the company has expanded with a network of daughter companies spanning the entire globe, with Mirka (UK) Ltd becoming the first daughter company to be established in 1979.

While the business is a very different company today, its core vision remains the same; to give people and its customers the opportunity to perform better and achieve that perfect finish. Its daily operations are continually striving to improve its products, addedvalue services, and training support to enable its employees to fulfill their potential and for its customers to continue to be successful.

“The most important element of our evolution has always been to listen to the voice of our customers,” says Mirka’s CEO

Stefan Sjöberg.

“We are proud of all the milestones we have achieved, but to stay relevant we must also look forward to the next big thing, and here we see a lot of potential. The Green Deal in the European Union, and the green transition in the world, in general, are things that will shape how we look at our

business and how we perform - not only for Mirka but for the entire industry. The company that solves this puzzle will be relevant for many years to come, and looking at our organisation today, I am confident that Mirka will be here to celebrate its 90th and 100th anniversaries as well,” Sjöberg concludes. www.mirka.com

Combilift donates its 75,000th truck to international charity

As part of Combilift’s celebrations for its 25th anniversary, the Irish materials handling specialist has announced that it is donating its 75,000th truck – an Aisle Master articulated forklift - to Convoy of Hope, a non-profit humanitarian and disaster relief organisation.

Convoy of Hope works alongside communities and its wide network of volunteers aim to alleviate poverty and hunger and to bring help and hope wherever they are most needed in the world. As this type of aid is sadly always in demand, operational expansion has also seen a corresponding increase in the requirement for warehousing capacity to accommodate the vast volume of supplies that are stored and ready for delivery to areas in need.

The World Distribution Center is based in Springfield, Missouri, and from this location at the ‘crossroads of America’ truckloads of relief supplies and food are sent on their way across the USA and further afield around the globe. Combilift supplied its first Aisle Master for this site four years ago, and a further three units were delivered last year.

Convoy of Hope’s Senior Director – Distribution Jeff Smethers: “A lot of our exponential growth has been down to the Aisle Masters as they enable us to get more loads in and out faster. And thanks to Combilift’s

free warehouse layout service and the Aisle Master’s narrow aisle capability we have achieved the best possible storage density and very efficient operation.”

The announcement was made at a gala dinner in Chicago during the ProMat trade fair, and Combilift’s CEO and co-founder Martin McVicar said: “The work that Convoy of Hope does is invaluable to relieve suffering around the world and we wanted to make our own contribution by donating our 75,000th truck to this very worthwhile charity.”

Erick Meier, Senior Vice President - Supply Chain at Convoy of Hope said ”We are so grateful that Combilift and Martin and the whole team have actually given us one of these trucks for our operations. This is going to help people for years – and ensure that every day someone in the world will receive aid - and that brings hope.”

Charitable focus from students at Moreton Morrell College

A charity that supports children suffering from life-threatening illnesses will benefit from the craftsmanship of carpentry students at Moreton Morrell College.

Level 1 carpentry and joinery students have joined forces with site carpentry Level 2 and 3 learners to create an array of items including coasters, chopping boards, tea light holders and tables. These painstakingly-crafted products will be sold or raffled off at the college’s annual Lambing and Animals Weekend, which is held at Nether Moreton Farm and last year attracted more than 4000 visitors.

Last year students took £800 worth of orders over the weekend and sold raffle tickets to raise money for Oxfam’s Humanitarian Appeal.

Students will man a stall at the event on Saturday, March 25th and Sunday, March 26th where 40% of the money raised from items sold will be donated to Molly Ollys.

The Warwick-based charity was set up 11 years ago by Rachel and Tim Ollerenshaw after their eight-year-old daughter Molly died

from kidney cancer. Molly Ollys emotionally supports UK children aged up to 18 who have a lifethreatening illness.

John Billings, carpentry and joinery lecturer at Moreton Morrell College, has seen students embrace the project across the board. He said: “Each year as part of their personal development, the full-time learners choose a charity, to help promote being a good citizen and raise money for that charity.

“This year Molly Ollys was chosen after hearing about the amazing work they do. Everything we are making is on the basis of 60 % of the sale will go towards materials and the rest be donated to charity.

“It really helps students with learning how to price materials and

planning labour schedules.”

It was during this process where it was decided that a table that had taken a group of students more than 40 hours of labour to create would not be sold.

John explained: “With the hours we put in and the cost that would incur, it was decided by the students that they couldn’t make the money back so instead they decided that it would be raffled off.

“It has helped them with their curriculum and to definitely develop a lot quicker, they’re keen to progress and use things like some power tools that previously they were maybe not ready to do.”

“What’s been really great is seeing a new member of staff Ollie Adams, who is an instructor/technician

in carpentry and joinery, come straight in from industry and bring his skills into the workshop.”

Jennie Ludford, from Mollys Ollys, visited students at Moreton Morrell College to witness their craftmanship first hand.

She said: “It was fabulous to visit the college and see the talented construction apprentices in action.

“They have made a lovely table out of timber and resin materials which is being raffled off to raise funds for Molly Ollys. We are very grateful to the team for supporting us and I was pleased to be able to explain to the apprentices about the work that we do at the charity and to play a video of three children with life-threatening illnesses that we have helped.

“Molly Ollys can only keep on emotionally supporting children and their families through the generous donations and fundraising efforts of individuals and organisations like Moreton Morrell College.”

Robert Bierfreund of Interprint new chairman of DPA

Robert Bierfreund is taking over the chairmanship of the Digital Printing Association (DIPA) with immediate effect, replacing Ali Özyilmaz of MB Digitalprint.

DIPA brings together experts from all process steps of industrial surface design. The aim of DIPA is to take a holistic view of the individual surface design process and to make the possibilities of industrial digital printing as an innovative process accessible to as many users as possible.

Robert Bierfreund started his career in the printing industry back in 1991. For 17 years, he held various management positions throughout Europe at Bertelsmann Printing. Since 2011, the electrical engineer has been leading Interprint worldwide as Group COO/MD: “I am looking forward to my new tasks within DIPA. Interprint has demonstrated innovative strength in all areas of décor printing since its foundation. As an active member and chairman of DIPA, it is my concern

to further develop the new technologies around digital printing with its associated ECO system on their way to the perfectly designed surface.”

In addition to Robert’s appointment, DIPA also welcomes Egger, Finsa, Metis and Heimann, as additional members that support DIPA with their expertise in the application of digital printing.

DIPA is also participating at Ligna this year too, presenting at the Ligna.Stage. DIPA will present a two-hour Spotlight in German and English, for visitors on site, or streaming and on demand for those interested. The ‘future workshop’ on digital printing will highlight, among other things, the DIPA Academy as a solution to the acute shortage of skilled workers, the use of artificial intelligence in the digital printing process, and the need to build an eco system of its own in the digital environment of different machine manufacturers, technologies, and a wide variety of materials. www.dipa.com

7000th delegate to attend an Abtec abrasive product safety training course

Abtec has announceed that in March 2023 the 7000th delegate attended one of the company’s abrasive wheel, disc and sanding belt safety training courses. SAVE ENERGY REDUCE COSTS

SEE ECOGATE IN ACTION

Hall 15 Stand F90/1

In many manufacturing facilities, extraction fans operate continuously, at full power, throughout the working day.

Even when some machines are not in use, and often during factory breaks, the powerful, energy-consuming fans continue to run at full speed – wasting valuable energy... and money!

With ECOGATE, the extraction system responds in real-time to variations in machine use. When a production machine is switched on, the greenBOX Controller opens a motorised damper to provide extraction for that particular machine.

With ECOGATE technology installed, an extraction fan will consume the minimum power required to provide optimum extraction – reducing electricity bills by 68% on average.

Jewson joins european distribution group, STARK Group

Jewson has joined STARK Group A/S as the acquisition, first announced on the 12th December, of Jewson’s parent company Saint-Gobain Building Distribution UK, has been completed by STARK Group.

Jewson has now joined one of the fastest growing merchants and distribution groups in Europe and a business completely focussed on its expertise in distributing building materials for Tradespeople.

The Jewson brand name, much recognised and respected by those in the industry will continue and Jewson will become part of the UK subsidiary of STARK Group, STARK Building Materials UK.

Nadine Matthews, MD of Jewson, said: “Our priority as a business is to develop strategic industry partnerships that benefit our customers, suppliers and colleagues – and we believe that’s exactly what we’ll be able to deliver now that we are part of the STARK Group.

“As a leading distributor of building materials across Europe, STARK Group, like Jewson, is a customer-first business that is completely focussed on meeting

the needs of all our customers from builders and tradespeople, through to our relationships with National housebuilders and our offering through Jewson Partnership Solutions for our social housing customers.

“Our businesses are united by the same values, and by working together, we know we can develop the very best offering available on the market.

“We have a clear and consistent strategy for growth, which STARK has demonstrated true belief in, and we now have an opportunity to learn from their successful

experience across Europe to build even further on our plans. STARK has a tremendous track record in helping businesses reach their full potential, and we’re excited to see the positive impact this will have on our customers, suppliers and colleagues – the people who are critical to our success.

“While this is a significant moment in Jewson’s history, those we work with daily won’t notice any immediate change to our operations. It’s very much business as usual and we will continue to trade as normal to ensure our customers can keep on delivering

for their own customers and projects.

“We see the STARK Group and Jewson as kindred spirits, and the future looks very bright.”

STARK Group CEO Søren P Olesen said: “We are very pleased to have completed this acquisition in great time and look forward to welcoming the 5905 colleagues and 510 branches from Jewson to STARK. We have a strategy that successfully focuses on professional tradespeople and the renovation and maintenance market together with specialist distribution for a range of customer segments. Entering the UK market is a great opportunity for our combined business to share best practice across the Nordics, Germany, Austria and the UK making life even easier for tradespeople.

We’re delighted to now be a major employer in the UK, with 9000 colleagues, where we will continue to operate as a good corporate citizen, placing a strong emphasis on sustainability, valuing and caring about our new UK employees and supporting UK growth and building decarbonisation,” says Olesen.

I am absolutely devastated to find myself writing this, but sadly Darren Ogden lost his battle against cancer aged 54, on the evening of Friday, 10th March.

Darren was known to many as our ‘glue stick expert’, with over 13 years’ service to the company. He was a lot more than just an employee – he was a good friend, classed as a “glue family member” and will be very much missed by not only us and his family, but by all who knew him or ever had the privilege to meet him.

Darren was very much into his sports, playing golf, squash, cricket and a keen runner – he even won the BASA Glue Pot Trophy in 2012 – a coveted trophy in the glue world. He was a bright character, as colourful as his shirts, with a quick witted sense of humour and a heart of gold, who would do anything to help someone out – sadly taken from us way too early.

We will miss you but never forget you. Rest In Peace my friend. The funeral will take place 3pm Wednesday 5th April at Rochdale Crematorium. Donations to Springhill Hospice, Rochdale OL16 4PZ. https://lnkd.in/er2_6NuK

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Gerd Ney who passed away peacefully in hospital on Saturday 11th March aged 82, from complications arising from a short illness.

An iconic figure in the woodworking industry for more than 40 years, Gerd Ney built his fledgling company to become one of the leading brands in the UK and Ireland, and was instrumental in starting up hundreds of new businesses over this time.

Our condolences go out to family, friends, colleagues and the many industry and business associates he created across the globe.

He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will remain.

JJ Smith mark 100 years – a history of innovation

The Smith family originated from Crosby, near Maryport in Cumbria. Mr Jack Smith was manager of a farm, and later moved the family to Blacon, near Chester, to manage a stud farm breeding the famous Clydesdale horses. Three of his four sons William, Percy and Tom remained in Cumbria and served their apprenticeships at the locomotive works in Maryport. The other son John James went off to America.

When John James returned from America after the Great War, he had an idea of setting up an engineering business in Liverpool. In 1923, he and William established JJ Smith & Co (Engineers) Ltd. The factory was in Marlborough Street in Liverpool city centre, and Tom and Percy eventually joined them. In the 1930’s the company began specialising in woodworking machinery after taking over two small engineering companies who manufactured saw benches and sanders. When the factory was destroyed by the bombing blitz of Liverpool in 1940, John James and his brothers secured a six acre plot of land for a factory in Melling, which was then open countryside, but later became a mix of industry and housing. During the war years the company turned over production to aircraft parts which called for precision engineering. Propeller nuts for the famous Mosquito, one of Britain’s fastest

wartime planes were manufactured by Smith’s who also produced merchant ship radar huts for the Admiralty.

After the war the company reverted to normal business and began to produce the famous Smith range of planers, mortisers, saws, sanders and spindle moulders, with the machine bases manufactured in their own iron foundry. This range was sold extensively in the UK and throughout the world. During this period the second generation of family joined the business - John Bruce [son of John James] and Colin and John [sons of William]. In the late 50s the company began to renovate and sell second-hand woodworking machinery and employed a workforce of more than 100. With such huge demand, JJ Smith decided to devote full time operation to this side of the business

and eventually phased out the Smith range which had been so successful. Second-hand machine sales increased exponentially in the 60s and were exported worldwide. During the same period, a decision was taken to embark on selling new machinery manufactured by Wadkin, Robinson and Cooksley resulting in a new showroom being built to house and demonstrate this important range. In the early 70s JJ Smith became one of the pioneers of importing woodworking machinery manufactured in Germany, Italy, USA and Japan. During the late 60s and early 70s, two further second generation family members joined [Joan Jones and Kathleen Stanley –daughters of Tom].

Between 1976 and 1983 the third generation of family arrived in the business John and

Guy Stanley [grandsons of Tom], Cathy Bell [granddaughter of Tom], Martin Smith [grandson of John James] and Jane Reid [granddaughter of William]. Shirley Armstrong [second generation and daughter of William] also joined to look after sales of tools and spare parts.

The 80s also saw the opening of another new warehouse in Melling, and a new showroom and office near to Heathrow airport. During the 90s Smith’s consolidated their position as one of the leading importers of machinery and supplied the first CNC controlled copy lathe into the UK market, and introduced the first fully automatic crosscut saw to the UK – which still remains one of the top selling machines some 30 years later. The new millennium saw the sale of the Melling site for housing development, and a move to its new and still current 3750 sq m factory, showroom and offices in Knowsley, North Liverpool.

In 2003 Ian Stanley [the first of the fourth generation] started his career in the business. The next decade saw the company enter into an Anglo/Dutch joint venture to manufacture and distribute worldwide a range of equipment for Timber Frame house production. Importation of more specialised CNC machines for furniture parts, sofas and joinery was added and is still an important part of the sales portfolio today. Fourth generation family members are Rachael Baker, Michael Stanley and Adrian Smith joined between 2013-2015.

In 2022, JJ Smith were awarded the prestigious Knowsley Small Business Of The Year Award which recognised the company’s on-going commitment of hiring apprentices from the local community, and also the

pioneering design of machinery for the ever growing off-site construction industry.

To reach this 100 year anniversary is a true milestone for the company, and one which both the directors and shareholders are justifiably very proud of. It has only been made possible by the dedication and hard work of every single

employee over the last century, and also the support of the continental manufacturing partners, many of whom have been working with JJ Smith for over 30 years.

Timber growth to be at FIT Show 2023

It’s less than five months until FIT Show returns to the NEC for its ten year anniversary edition (May 23rd-25th, 2023.) Over the last decade, FIT Show has firmly established itself as the number one event for the UK glass, glazing, windows, doors, hardware and components industry.

The UK timber window market has demonstrated significant growth since 2014, which saw an uplift of 17.9% to 739,000 frames, and by 25.4% to £439m in installed value* (Palmer Report). It is anticipated that this growth is set to continue, although stalled slightly by global supply chain issues and the economic impact of COVID. This growth is reflected by the representation of timber products at FIT Show. What started out as a predominantly UPVC trade show has evolved significantly to become a full showcase of the very best timber, aluminium, UPVC and composite products on the market.

Supported by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), the FIT Show 2023 roster of exhibitors includes brands such as Metsawood, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of engineered wood products,

and timber window and door manufacturers Gowercroft and AB Staliu Gaminiai.

For brands who are looking to engage with builders, installers, specifiers and fabricators of timber products, FIT Show provides access to every link in the supply chain, all under one roof across three days. One third of the people who visited FIT Show in 2022 were specifically seeking composite and timber solutions.

Here’s why FIT Show 2023 should be an essential fixture in your business calendar this year:

UK’s only dedicated industry event

FIT Show is the UK’s only dedicated event for the fenestration industry. Exhibiting at FIT Show will give you access to a projected audience of 10,000 installers, builders, fabricators, specifiers, architects and local authorities all looking to find the latest products and innovations.

More than windows and doors

FIT Show has evolved to become much more than a windows and doors event. Alongside the show’s core UPVC, aluminium, timber

and hardware line-up, FIT Show has introduced new features for outdoor living related products, lifting equipment and so much more.

A decade of innovation

When the FIT Show returns this May, it will be ten full years since the show launched. This is your chance to help celebrate ten years since the launch of FIT Show, and a decade of being the UK’s number one trade show for the glass, glazing, hardware and components industry.

FIT Show marketing machine

For brands looking to unlock the power of exhibiting at FIT Show, the sooner you sign up to exhibit, the sooner you can start benefiting from the huge marketing machine that powers FIT Show. Our dedicated in-house team of experts are on hand to help your business get the best possible ROI out of exhibiting.

No show until 2025

After FIT Show 2023 this May there will be no show until 2025. Can you afford to leave a two year gap before engaging with the market,

en masse at FIT Show? As a visitor, can you wait a full two years before seeing and comparing the latest products on the market, side-byside?

A full line-up

Over 85% of space has now been allocated and 20% of the FIT Show 2023 list of exhibitors is made up of brands who are completely new to FIT Show. If you are thinking about exhibiting, it’s likely that your competitors are going to be there. And if you’ve visited before, but think there won’t be anything new to see, the line-up includes a wide breadth of launch brands who are lining up to show you the very latest products and innovations.

Free to attend and budget friendly rates

For visitors, FIT Show is completely free to attend. Registration is already open so you can lock the biggest days of the fenestration calendar on the FIT Show website. For exhibitors, walk on stand packages are available from as little as £3000. The FIT Show team of experts is on hand to help you at every step of the journey. www.fitshow.co.uk

New Furniture Component Expo to debut in 2024

The British Furniture Manufacturers trade body has announced a brand-new show for 2024, providing an exciting opportunity for furniture makers to connect with the components sector in a one-stop shop format.

The inaugural Furniture Component Expo will provide an opportunity for manufacturers of furniture to review, network and purchase everything in the supply chain from leading suppliers, all under one roof.

Taking place at the Telford International Centre, the date for the business-to-business event has been set for the 24-25th April 2024. The Expo will feature a seminar theatre where topical industry insights will be discussed and exhibitors will launch new products, enhancing the experience for visitors.

An exciting new development is also being launched with Club BFM, a new and exclusive members’ lounge for BFM members, introduced at the event.

Sean Holt, BFM MD said: “After researching the industry we found a gap in the market for a one-stop shop for furniture components. Suppliers to the furniture industry are potentially missing out on opportunities to expand their business, and manufacturers are looking for routes to discover new and innovative ideas.

“To bridge this gap, we’ve been working with some leading industry suppliers to help shape the profile of the show. The format has led to them showing an early commitment to exhibiting.”

Positive initial response News of the Furniture Component Expo has been well-received by Nick Harland-Smith, MD of Handy. He said: “We are delighted to learn of the BFM’s initiative to launch a UK-based furniture components suppliers’ exhibition.

“The presence of such a show is long overdue. April 2024 cannot come quickly enough, and the Handy sales team look forward to welcoming visitors to our stand at this inaugural event.”

Stuart Elmy, Marketing and Business Development at Heico Fastners, is also supporting the event. He said: “We feel the Furniture Component Expo offers a unique opportunity for companies such as ours to reach a targeted audience of furniture manufacturers.”

The BFM events’ team is developing the Expo to ensure broad appeal, and offer an opportunity for wider discussion about the furniture industry and its future.

Paul Shepherd from BeA Group added: “We want to use the Furniture Component Expo 2024 as a platform to introduce automation.

“We need to start the automation conversation now before UK manufacturing comes under pressure from overseas and the Expo provides the ideal opportunity.”

Book now to exhibit British Furniture Manufacturers is urging suppliers to enquire now if they plan to exhibit at its brand new Furniture Component Expo 2024.

Sean said: “We are delighted with the successful launch of the Furniture Component Expo 24, which has stimulated significant interest from across the supply chain in the UK, Europe and USA.

“As a result, and to ensure a diverse and high-quality event, we are curating the event profile by limiting the number of exhibitors in each sector of the supply chain.

“We would therefore encourage any potential exhibitors to make an enquiry early to avoid disappointment.”

Living, living, working, shopping – the world is changing. Co-working, co-creating and coindividualisation are the drivers of the hour.

People with different needs and preferences live and work together. Rooms lose their clearly defined function. designing things. Everything is in motion. Highly flexible, but always authentic.

&CO – connecting the future

With the ‘&CO’ concept, Interprint takes up the social developments of our time and translates them into contemporary lifestyle decors. In extraordinary, interactive experience and opportunity spaces on two floors at the Design Post, visitors will learn how the boundaries between the interior areas are increasingly fading. An innovative room experience that is unusual for product

presentations – typical Interprint. The new decorative surfaces are correspondingly flexible and versatile: so this is why Interprint changes object-like furniture in the different Spaces in at utmost flexible and playful style, all the way through the fair. Pure playfullness. Nothing is fixed. Everything remains indefinite. Those visitors who stand and look at the Spaces, decide for themselves. The moment defines the function.

&CO – co-thinking with creatives and visionaries

Understanding change. Identifying trends. Determination of styles. Interprint presents itself as an expert for future living and interior worlds - a full-service provider for industry players. As a networker who attracts equally creative and innovative partners and brings them to a peak performance. In combination, TOPPAN will show which technical innovations are set to revolutionize the market.

In other areas, visitors will see new, trend-setting decors for melamine surfaces, for the Xelio finish foil as well as different types of structures and large formats.

Countless new possibilities, made possible by the quality of Interprint decor and digital printing. Fulfilling extraordinary customer´s wishes: Interprint, together with cooperation partners make it possible when it comes to ideas and technologies. SDS 2023 – the best yet

Surface Design Show 2023 took place at the Business Design Centre in February, with the overwhelming response from both visitors and exhibitors being: ‘It’s never been better!’

Some 175 exhibitors showcased the best in surface design, with over half of them being new to the show. Nearly 6000 architects, designers and specifiers visited over the twoand a-half days to be inspired by the innovative materials on display and the excellent speaker’s programme. The overriding theme of the show was ‘Shaping Communities’, which explored an open dialogue amongst industries and brands, with the common goal of building stronger relationships between people and places.

“A brilliant variety of materials, SDS is always a great show to spot trends and to see how they are evolving” Hamish

Located right in the centre of the Show, Surface Spotlight Live (SSL) featured ground-breaking materials for visitors to touch and feel, giving a truly ‘hands-on’ experience for architects and designers to

enjoy and learn from. Curated by trend expert Sally Angharad and sponsored by CDUK, SSL presented a selection of surfaces, finishes and materials that celebrated the power of creative thinking, demonstrating how ethical innovation is providing positive design solutions.

“It has been a very good year for the show, creating a good opportunity to meet key players in the industry and for them to get to know our product” Armourcoat

The show had an incredible speaker’s programme, kicking off with the Opening Night Debate held in partnership with RIBA, titled ‘Climate Change and Future Proofing’ which featured a stellar line up of industry experts. The passionate session, hosted by Simon Sturgis, Founder of Targeting Zero, brought together a younger generation of architects, designers and clients. They not only explored the issues around the future durability and adaptability of current projects, but also how to ensure that the commercial value of projects can be future proofed against climate change.

Other talks included:

• Sourcing Locally, hosted by Veronica Simpson, in conversation with Camilla Leech, Richard Renman, and Emily Skinner.

• The PechaKucha included an all-female panel and was hosted by Nikki Osborn, creative director of Basha Franklin, with panellists including Oluwafunmbi Adeagbo, project architect of Morris & co, Natasha Bonugli, creative director and founder of Bon Collective, Nicola Rutt, founding director of Studio MULTI and Sofia Steffenoni, founder of Matter of Stuff.

• Legends Live returned for the second year, in partnership with Mix Interiors and saw editor Harry McKinley interview Katrina Larkin, Co-Founder, Fora and Chief ESG Officer, The Office Group.

“It’s been consistently busy other every day this year, which is just amazing, and it’s great to see things back on track again post Covid”

Jennifer Castoldi curator of New Talent

Committed to supporting and promoting up and coming designers in the materials sector, the New Talent area was bursting with innovation. Sponsored by Canon UK

and curated by Jennifer Castoldi, the 2023 New Talent section saw over 30 participants display a range of sophisticated designs from textile designs to augmented reality and 3D tiles. A recurring theme among many participants this year was the use of natural materials and dyes.

EDGINGS

The Curve – a radius innovation

Heitz, the veneer edging specialist, is coming up with a strong trade fair novelty at interzum in Cologne: The Curve. It is a multi-layered thick veneer edging so flexible that it opens up new dimensions in the processing of thick veneer edgings around tight radii.

It differs from conventional thick veneer edgings by way of its special setup.

This feature enables a processor to run a thick veneer edging around even the tightest radii (e.g. radius ≤ 20) in just one pass on a processing centre.

This ensures significant time savings and is thus also clearly beneficial in terms of economy and efficiency.

In summary: „The Curve” unfolds its special qualities when it comes to cover edges of workpieces with small radii on proccessing centres. This is what makes this thick veneer edging so attractive for the demanding user.

With this innovation Heitz once again proves to being an innovation driver in the veneer edgebanding market.

Ligna returns!

With more than 1100 exhibitors: Ligna 2023 is open for business once again from May 15-19th 2023 celebrating its return with a comprehensive overview of the furniture, woodworking and wood processing industry. Despite everything that’s currently going in the world, the organiser confirms Ligna’s status as the world’s leading trade show with 105,000 sq m of exhibition pspace Global players and renowned companies from all over the world come together to showcase tools, machinery and equipment

as well as smart solutions and new technologies. In addition to companies from Germany, firms from Italy, Austria, Turkey, Spain, China, Sweden, Slovenia, Denmark and the Netherlands account for the largest proportion of exhibitors by area. In the process, the world’s leading trade show has even been able to expand its exhibitor portfolio: this year, more than 180 first-time exhibitors intend to take advantage of the opportunities for business initiation and networking.

“Ligna offers a unique overview of the entire value chain of the woodworking and wood processing industry. It is the premier international showcase for innovations and the widely recognised stage for world firsts. We have been receiving a wave of euphoria from the community ever since planning began. The industry is looking forward to the face-toface experience in Hannnover,”

said Dr Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG, highlighting the importance of the event at the Ligna.Preview which took place back in February. “At Ligna 2023, visitors will meet exhibitors from 44 countries. This is where trends are set and discussed that shape the industry and point the way to the future.”

Ligna focus topics move the industry

Ligna 2023 will also live up to its role as a trendsetter in its choice of focus topics. The topic of digitization is shaping the development of the industry and is a prerequisite for production that is as resource-efficient as it is flexible.

Under the title ‘Woodworking Transformation,’ it is also receiving a great deal of attention at Ligna. Exhibitors will show how far the networking of machines, tools, components and materials has already gone and will present

innovations in the fields of robotics, automation and software. The buzzwords Smart or Connected Factory, Industry 4.0 or Internet of Things and IoT platforms will continue to become tangible at Ligna with concrete examples.

On the way to an economy based on renewable resources, wood as the most important renewable raw material forms a central foundation. The woodbased bio-economy is considered an innovative technology driver. The framework conditions for expanding resource-efficient wood use are part of the European Green Deal and pillars of a circular bioeconomy. This is a development that will rightly be the focus of attention at Ligna 2023. On display will be development lines of the wood-based bioeconomy and technological innovations for responsible use of natural resources, as well as process technologies for shaping

chemically digested wood fibres. Wood is also steadily gaining (or should that be re-asserting?) its importance as a recyclable building material in the construction industry. The share of total construction volume accounted for by purely timber buildings and timber-mixed structures is growing continuously both nationally and globally. Ligna reflects this industry trend in the focus topic “Prefab Building Processes”: Because the increasing importance of timber construction also results in new requirements for technology and equipment.

At the Ligna.Preview, Bernd Oswald (GROPYUS) and Professor Achim Menges (University of Stuttgart) spoke on this topic. Conclusion: The construction industry needs a technology boost to produce in a contemporary and efficient manner - in prefabrication as well as on the construction site. At Ligna, interested parties can discover suitable solutions and approaches that will determine the future of timber construction.

On-site and digital: Ligna.Stage, Guided Tours, Ligna.Recruiting & Ligna.Campus

The Ligna.Stage presents the live

audience in Hall 12 with a varied forum program of solution- and user-oriented presentations and panel discussions along the Ligna focus topics as well as recruiting and sustainability. For those who cannot be present on site, the various program items will also be available as a stream live and on demand on the Ligna website.

Visitors can also look forward to the Guided Tours again – this year in a hybrid format. The tours offer a tailored overview of various topics. In groups of up to 25 participants, interested parties will be guided to selected exhibitors and given exclusive presentations and live demonstrations directly at their stands.

Like the Ligna.Stage program, the Hybrid Guided Tours are available live and on-demand in streaming in English and German on the Ligna website.

“By streaming our additional formats, we want to make Ligna and relevant industry developments accessible to those who can’t be there on site,” says Stephanie Wagner, Ligna Project Manager.

“Independent of location and time, we can thus extend Ligna’s appeal far beyond the event period.”

In addition, a networking service

is available to all event participants. The Ligna ticket is a prerequisite for access. After registering, visitors and exhibitors can activate the service via the Ligna website and then receive contact suggestions and the opportunity to arrange appointments.

In view of the shortage of skilled workers and concerns about young talent, Ligna also provides an overview of research, education and career opportunities in the woodworking and wood processing industry. The Ligna.Campus provides information on education and training courses offered by universities, technical colleges and technical schools. Teaching also presents current research projects.

At Ligna.Recruiting, potential employers meet interested skilled personnel. A digital job wall allows companies – whether exhibitors or visitors – to post attractive job offers. This offer can not only be viewed and accessed digitally at the recruiting area at Ligna, but is supplemented by on-site opportunities for personal matchmaking between human resources and interested parties and by company pitches from participating companies.

One ticket, twice the business Visitors will also benefit again this year from a special ticket cooperation: whether interzum (May 9-12th, 2023, Cologne) or Ligna (May 15-19th, 2023, Hannover) –the admission tickets for both trade fairs entitle the holder to visit the partner event in each case. This gives visitors an all-encompassing overview of furniture manufacturing and interior design, as well as the woodworking and wood processing industries.

The new ‘made in SCM automation’ on stage at Ligna 2023

SCM’s Smart&Human Factory has once again been updated: new automation systems and human, machine and robot interaction for a highly customised, versatile, interconnected and sustainable production. Also making its début at the trade fair is an integrated cell for the artisan worker and many other new entries for all the application areas in secondary wood processing.

SCM is preparing for the upcoming edition of Ligna –Hannover, 15-19th May –consolidated by a growth in double figures, that brought the Group’s turnover in 2022 to €850m, and with technological proposals that meet the most current needs of a highly customised, versatile, interconnected and sustainable production.

In an exhibition area covering 3000 sq m between hall 13 and hall 16 (the latter referring to the Superfici technologies for finishing), visitors to Ligna will have an opportunity to discover the vast range of new products developed by the Italian Group to meet every production need when machining panels, solid wood, timber construction and joinery production.

Innovation with a common goal: to make processes more efficient, keep costs, consumption and waste down and simplify their management, as is the case with the Smart&Human Factory that will be presented in Hannover in two distinct versions for industry and the artisan.

“At Ligna,” says Pietro Gheller, SCM’s Product & Markets Director, “we will give solid evidence of our ability to provide top-quality solutions for every woodworking application. We will present advanced automation systems that

stand apart for being modular and configurable to suit the customer’s needs and support a top-quality, flexible production while still guaranteeing high standards in efficiency and productivity”.

“The new SCM digital factory,” continues Gheller, “is integrated and interconnected to the company’s MES systems to optimise more complex production flows. Furthermore, it allows for real-time, 360° planning and monitoring of all the process stages, even remotely: from the order to design, right up to the after-sales service.

“The aim is the encourage an optimal, more sustainable use of energy resources and the materials used by the customer, as well as improve the plant’s resources, by pre-empting the need for maintenance and preventing any machine stops thanks to the data collected being processed.”

The Smart&Human Factory for the furniture industry

The system of flexible cells on display in Hannover can produce around 400 furnishing components per shift and is mainly aimed at furniture kit manufacturers.

This is one of the many

configurations that the Smart&Human Factory can assume based on customer demands. The cells are integrated with articulated robots and connected by unmanned AMR shuttles.

In the beam saw area, SCM will be presenting its new Gabbiani GT2 flexible cell with articulated robot for automatic loading and unloading. The cell has been designed to optimise shifts and combine batch one machining needs with those of large-volume production. The cell is enhanced by the new Maestro Optiwise optimiser, and has been designed for manned or unmanned use, allowing for immediate and automatic switching between one mode and another: the robot positions or removes the additional modules between the shelves, for efficient working. In automatic mode with robot, the cell allows for work to be done with no shift limitations, relieving the operator of low-value work, and allowing for even small, finished pieces to be handled very easily. Pack cutting can be performed when operating in manned mode.

In the edgebanding area, SCM will be presenting a Stefani Cell E flexible cell that combines the

numerous advantages of the Stefani X industrial edgebander, in terms of productivity and machining quality, with the advantages of a flexible and automated integration of the entire production loop.

In a logic of complete automation, the panels are supplied autonomously to the edgebander by an industrial articulated robot. On exiting, the Pickback Bridge System guarantees the timely return of the panels after longitudinal or transversal machining.

The cell is governed by Maestro Active Edge HMI software for a simple, intuitive control, and is designed for an intensive use over several shifts, with a speed of 25 metres per minute. It guarantees an ideal application of the edge without the use of glue, thanks to AirFusion+ technology, and

outstanding machining quality even on the most delicate, state-of-theart materials thanks to electronic controls.

Other new entries include the Morbidelli CX220 drilling and dowelling flexible cell with robot that creates all the parts of a piece of furniture more efficiently, even with pieces that differ considerably from one another. The cell produces a panel per minute and up to more than 400 panels per shift with a single operator in just 50 sq m. Its exclusive layout allows for two possible uses: unmanned, thanks to the integrated robot on the rear side that performs all the loading and unloading operations in complete autonomy for a continuous production cycle; with partial supervision by the operator who, in complete safety, can load and unload the panels at the front of the cell while the robot continues to machine on the opposite side.

The process is completed with the Cut C200 right size box-making machine, a new solution for batch one cardboard box packaging that produces up to four boxes per minute in different shapes and sizes.

The secret? The high advancement speed and use of a brushless motor with extremely fast positioning set-up while the order-by-order production is enhanced by separate longitudinal cutting and creasing units and by a transversal unit.

Another advantage is the optimisation of the consumption of cardboard based on the actual size of the box produced, choosing between three kinds of feed: singlesheet cardboard or continuous module, with flanked modules or with automatic switch up to eight modules.

Smart&Human Factory for the artisan

Also taking centre stage at Ligna is an integrated cell for flexible and customised production from the raw material to the finished piece of furniture. As well as MES Maestro easyFlow, ideal for creating the perfect integration between the office and production area, the cell benefits from the advantages of the machines involved, considerably

reducing times and margins of error.

The Invincibile SI X circular saw is reinforced by SCM’s Thundercut optimiser-cutting sequencer, the only one to guide the operator one step at a time when inserting the panel into the machine and when cutting.

Startech CN Plus CNC drilling centre has been designed to produce furniture parts easily and flexibly without repositioning the tools and without a need for operator intervention.

The ME 40TR edgebander, complete with a new rounding unit that allows you to achieve excellent quality finished products, without further machining required.

Digital software and services

Flanking both of SCM’s Smart&Human Factory processes will be a vast integrated proposal of software, MES and digital services on display in the ‘Digital Integrated Woodworking Process’ area.

Software and services that support the customer at each stage: data preparation, planning, production, monitoring and after-sales assistance, increasing efficiency and connecting the office to the factory.

The CAD/CAM office programming software is updated for the preparation of data for Maestro CNC machining centres and the 3D Maestro pro view simulator for machining panels and solid wood.

For production planning, optimisation and control, the MES Maestro easyFlow is the plug and play solution integrated with all of SCM’s software and machines, coupled with both the Smart&Human Factory for industry and the one for joinery work to manage the 4.0 programming, management and interconnection of the entire production flow.

New entries also among the cutting optimisers. Maestro Optiwise for the single blade and

angular beam saws ensures you get the best out of the cut with minimum waste for both large and small production batches. Furthermore, it offers the best solution in terms of waste, time and costs and a user experience that is even simpler and more efficient.

Maestro Power TMS, the software that simplifies and optimises the management of tools inside CNC machining centre magazines is making its mark with the machining of solid wood. Depending on the kind of machining required, the software operates to maximise the capacity of the magazines and to speed up the tool change according to the production mix: more than 100 tools readily available, a reduction in times and an increase in productivity.

The HMI software and Maestro active line supervisors have also been updated for an even simpler, optimal control and interaction with all the SCM machines.

In support of the production monitoring stages, machine maintenance and after-sales services, the digital services enabled by the IoT Maestro connect platform are further enhanced. The aim is to guarantee maximum return on the machines and plants in conjunction with the constant support from SCM technicians.

Nowadays, this IoT platform is integrated into the ‘Woodworking made Izy’ project conducted by the most important machinery manufacturers who, together, have defined a standard interface and a common language for connecting the machines and MES to one another, which allows for overall control of the production process.

The latest for all woodworking application fields

Making its mark among the panel CNC machining centres is the new FlexDrive system that will be applied to a Morbidelli M100 allin-one technology drilling-routing centre at the trade fair: via an innovative positioning system, this worktable allows for manual set up without the possibility of error thanks to the built-in light indicators on bars and suction cups/clamps.

Olimpic 500 edgebander

Making its debut at Ligna is also the Accord 500 CNC machining centre to produce doors, staircases and windows in solid wood: this solution offers 30% higher productivity compared to market standards and an intelligent management with Maestro power TMS, the software that simplifies and optimises tool handling in the machine’s magazines.

For panel edgebanding, SCM is further expanding its range with the new Olimpic 500 and Olimpic 300 models designed for artisan businesses. These edgebanders are equipped with large (from 1015in in the standard version) new touch controls and offer a simple and intuitive use and can connect and synchronise with company management systems. Some of the advantages include machining even thin panels, generally used to manufacture drawers, and with a thickness of up to 60mm, even in rounding.

Complete, versatile and fully electronic, Olimpic 500 guarantees machining with both EVA and Polyurethane glue and can machine two real radii with all the units, without compromising.

Also on show with its world preview is the Olimpic 300 automatic edgebander, the new entry level solution in the range for a demanding artisan production.

The SCM Surface Technologies integrated offer for surface treatment proposals has also been enhanced with new devices and models to meet every kind of process demand and end product type as well as achieve sophisticated finishing solutions.

Making its debut at Ligna will be SCM’s new laser unit applied to the DMC system automatic sanding-calibrating machines, real flexible abrasive modular numeric control machining centres. This multi-purpose innovative unit is particularly suited to creating three-dimensional scoring on parquet, wooden elements, MDF panels to be veneered, fibre cement panels and solid surfaces of any length. Furthermore, thanks to the exclusive “Self-Refilling” technology, a distinctive advantage of SCM’s laser unit, it is possible to make the

most of the features in terms of power without further interruptions to the production flow.

A vast range of new Superfici solutions for finishing will also be presented in Hall 16 (stand C6-D5). A dedicated area will be given over to the new Compact XL in the sprayers section: designed to offer excellent production capacity, it reflects the company’s worth, increasingly focused on energy saving, thanks to a more efficient paint recovery system and improved air circulation. All this is spiced up by a completely new design.

Also on display is a UV LED polymerisation system with several UV monochromatic sources of different wavelengths to achieve a controlled multi-chromatic emission in a wider spectrum compared to the pure UV LED radiation. The result is chemicalphysical performances fully comparable with standard UV polymerisation, while maintaining the typical advantages offered by led.

For extra-opaque effects on the finish of the most varied end products and materials, another new entry will be the Superfici excimatt: excimer technology

offering surprisingly smooth effects with high levels of opacity but with no more compromising on surface resistance.

Important new entries for the timber construction industry as well. SCM will be presenting Oikos XS, the new CNC machining centre designed to meet the needs of new applications and new markets. Maximum implementation speed, precision and reduced bulk are the advantages of this model designed for all those companies involved in the production of prefabricated walls, trusses, roofs and blockhaus.

Also highlighted is the new Maestro active beam&wall humanmachine interface software for all the CNC machining centres used in timber constructions. Programming, control and optimisation of the production flow directly on the machine are now possible in an even simpler, more intuitive fashion.

Even SCM’s solutions for sanding are now applied to timber construction. SCM will be presenting DMC System XL the highly modular automatic sandingcalibrating machine, capable of machining X-Lam/CLT wall panels up to 3700mm in width and 500mm thick.

Hymmen presents its latest and its established surface technologies

Personal networking at trade fairs and conferences has picked up again last year after the pandemic break. Nevertheless, Ligna 2023 will be the first event where the relevant market players in the woodworking and decor industry from all over the world will meet at the same time at the same place.

“We are delighted to be able to explain our latest developments and proven technologies to the international audience again in face-to-face meetings,” summarises Dr René Pankoke, Managing Partner of Hymmen. Thus, at the show, Hymmen aims to build on the recent successes of its digital printing technology on an international scale. In the last 12 months alone, six new Jupiter

digital printing lines featuring Digital Lacquer Embossing (DLEplus) technology have been sold. This means that there are now over 50 Jupiter digital printing systems in operation.

For the flooring industry, Hymmen has developed three possible finish options: Viscoelastic topcoat (AC5 falling sand), corundum (S42 Taber) or wear layer lamination. All surfaces convince with 100% synchronous pore structures. A wide variety of digitally enhanced materials – including the flooring installed at the booth – can be viewed and touched. ‘The best wood ever printed’ sums it up well,” says Pankoke. “It is difficult to distinguish the planks finished with the multiple award-winning Digital Lacquer Embossing (DLEplus) technology from real wood. With the help of a graphic, the individual process steps of the production are explained to the interested visitor. In addition, film recordings show the production in real operation. Of course, Hymmen’s experts will also be available to discuss the proven press technologies, liquid coating, calendar coating inert and laminating equipment, as well as digital printing of décor paper with water-based inks using the Saturn Digital Printing Line. Samples of end products manufactured using these technologies are available for

explanation, as are film recordings of production equipment in real operation. Double belt press technology has recently enjoyed unabated attention in the laminate manufacturing market: Only in the fiscal year 2022, Hymmen had six continuous HPL lines in its order backlog. The double belt press can be celebrated as the ‘grande dame’ of the wood-based materials industry, as it is already looking back on the completion of its fourth decade of life.

The combination of process expertise with the manufacturing know-how of individual components from gluing to multidaylight presses and conveying and handling technology at Hymmen has already led to individual plant projects in the area of engineered wood in the past. “The positive feedback from our customers and the market’s demand for

significantly higher automation and efficiency has now prompted us to expand our commitment in this market area,” explains Pankoke

There will be an opportunity at Ligna to discuss more details on projects that have already been successfully implemented and the possibility of new project planning.

Software is another important focus at the booth – and is equally relevant to all Hymmen-owned as well as external machinery and equipment. “This is the smart2i Industry Intelligence solution, for cloud-based monitoring and analysis of all relevant process parameters to optimise the entire production,” summarises Pankoke.

Visitors to Hymmen’s stand will be able to experience the live application of smart2i in real time at the booth. This is done via virtual access to real production data.

Showtime for Combilift at Ligna

In the four years since the last Ligna took place, Irish handling specialist Combilift has been busy introducing new models, finessing technology and expanding its global markets even further.

Ligna 2023 also coincides with the company’s 25th anniversary, and visitors will experience an action packed stand in the heart of the outdoor area. The company’s innovations and new product launches will be the main focus but Combilift also likes to entertain as well as inform, so expect dancing trucks, Irish music and refreshments too.

Around 16 exhibits will demonstrate that Combilift has a solution for pretty much every handling and storage scenario that companies in the timber, joinery and furniture sectors face, and these range from small pedestrian 1000kg capacity stackers to straddle carriers and mobile gantries which can lift loads of 100,000kg and over.

So let’s take a virtual walk around the stand to pick out some of this year’s highlights. Starting at the back we have two of the largest Combilift models, the Combi-SC Straddle Carrier and the Combi-CSS Slip Sheet, both of which guarantee safer and more productive operation when working

with containers. The Combi-CSS, premiered at the last Ligna, was designed for fast loading of freight containers. It allows a full container load cycle can be completed in under six minutes, and also keeps the risk of product damage to a minimum.

To the side of the straddle carrier we find a couple of the compact counterbalance design CombiCBE models and Combi-MR4, described at its launch last year as ‘taking multidirectional capability to the next level’ with its new Dynamic 360° ™ steering. These

will be used for the very popular dancing forklifts routine that is always guaranteed to draw a crowd – and which demonstrates the unrivalled manoeuvrability of the trucks as well as the skill of the drivers.

As part of the 25th anniversary celebrations there will be an unveiling of a new model in Hannover, so there will be at least one machine under wraps until the first day of the show.

On our virtual tour it is apparent that the majority of the exhibits are electric, so it is more than likely that this new addition to the portfolio will be an emissionfree, quiet machine that enables customers to reduce their carbon

footprint whilst benefiting from the powerful performance that is now offered by the new generation of electric handling equipment.

Our tour also takes in the Aisle Master articulated truck that is ready to demonstrate its narrow aisle capability within racking, and the Combi-WR4, a multi-directional pedestrian reach stacker that can handle pallets as well as long packs of timber.

“2023 is a very special year for us,” said Combilift MD Martin McVicar,“ and Ligna has always been an important event so it is a perfect framework for celebrating 25 years in business and the launch of numerous new models.”

Freud Tools presents its latest products technologies

Freud, a brand leader in the premium cutting tool industry, presents its product novelties at the upcoming edition of Ligna, the fair dedicated to the woodworking technologies, taking place in Hannover, from the 15-19th May.

The Italian company has always placed innovation at the core of its values. Since 1962, Freud invests in research and development to create highly performing and precise cutting tools, designed to satisfy the needs of users looking for solutions to produce more, for longer, with higher precision,

reduced energy consumption and minimal material waste and able to deliver aesthetically high results. Quality is key to Freud, starting from the Carbide, produced inhouse since 1980 and used for the cutting edges of all its premium tools. Back then, the number of recipes could be counted on the fingers of one hand and their formulations were almost standard. Today, the recipes increased to 20 variants, all customised by Freud’s experts to achieve sharp cutters, prolonged lifetime and perfect finishing in dedicated applications.

Leveraging its industrial knowhow, the brand also developed an innovative coating technology. Special ‘shields’, engineered for blades and routers, are applied to the tool bodies to protect from resin build-up and corrosion, providing

a long-lasting performance and reduced machine downtime. Freud applies innovative solutions also to the design of the cutting edges geometries, engineered to perform perfect cuts and deliver extended durability in industrial applications. In the circular saw blades segment, for example, the LSB X range for panel processing application, feature the so-called Super Square Tooth, a tip with an extra thickness that allows up to 25 re-sharpening, with a consequent extra value for money.

At Ligna, Freud will present the novelties in its wide range of circular saw blades, routing tools, cutterheads, window and door systems, knives and accessories. To learn more about the overall latest technologies, visit Freud at hall 11, booth D32.

Venjakob – just coat it

At this year’s world’s leading trade fair for tools, machines and production lines for woodworking and processing, Venjakob Maschinenbau will for the first time present its competence for roller coating machines live, in hall 16, stand C22.

For individual coating solutions in the field of spray coating technology, the company, which is based in Rheda-Wiedenbrueck/ Gernany and operates worldwide, is an established name as a system supplier.

The general contractor’s product range is extensive and covers all processes included in a finishing line. From pre-treatment (cleaning/ activation/intermediate coating sanding) to coating, automation and drying to exhaust air purification or energy recovery. Venjakob offers everything from a single source.

This also includes different application technologies.

Increased demand for combined coating processes

In addition to spray painting, dipping, flow coating, or casting, Venjakob, in cooperation with the Wo-Tech company, has been expanding its competence in the area of roller coating systems for some years.

Increasingly, these are not requested as a stand-alone solution, but in combination with other application processes, or as an entire finishing line. The company will be providing demonstrations at Ligna 2023. Venjakob will demonstrate how profiled work pieces are effectively coated with a 100% UV coating material using a special transfer roller and in combination with the robust design of our machine.

Curing takes place in a UV system, here Venjakob combines energy-saving UV-LED technology with a Surround UV module, which ensures optimum irradiation of

shaped work pieces. Afterwards, the coated workpieces can be stacked and packaged immediately, the coating is completely cured.

Crafts and industry are welcome

Many people associate Venjakob with fully automated finishing solutions for industrial companies in the woodworking and furniture industries. But the family-owned company can do ‘handshakes’ as well as ‘specifications’. The entry-level model VEN SPRAY ONE convinced many visitors to HolzHandwerk 2022. Robust, reliable and intuitively operated by one employee, the compact coating system offers a cost-efficient alternative to the manual spray booth.

The machine type, which is specially designed for craftsmen and small businesses, will also be demonstrated live at the trade show.

Intelligent control technology, an invisible added value for plant operators

Venjakob is trying to make this partly visible at the Ligna, for example, by showing how painting systems can be optimally occupied with the help of its own developed control technology and a software program, thus saving resources.

Intelligent control technology is the heart of the machine –because availability and reliable processes have top priority. In finishing lines from Venjakob, the entire process is carefully thought out and coordinated. The higherlevel control system networks all transports, transfers, turners as well as the conveyors integrated in the coating line or in the dryer and also enables recipes to be called up at a central point. Visitors can learn more about available options and implemented solutions at the on the Hoffmann stand in Hall 16.

Atemag shows new developments of aggregate technologies at Ligna

For Atemag, the company claim ‘where needs find solutions’ is a matter of the heart, which the technicians from the Black Forest pursue with passion. Thus, the specialists will again present innovative new developments at Ligna.

The new and modern booth, where the aggregate specialists will show the new developments to their customers and interested parties, is now adapted to the updated corporate design of the company. The stand is located in hall 12 just opposite their main entrance with on stand E83.

There, visitors can find out about many standard offers and new developments.

Atemag will be showing another dowel insertion unit at Ligna. This unit complements the possibilities of automatic dowel insertion in Holz-Her machines. While the dowel insertion unit, which has already proven itself on the market, is installed as a unit in the CNC EVOLUTION 7405 PinJet machining centre from Holz-Her. The new unit is designed for a new dowel and drilling machine from the machine manufacturer. This is exhibited at the Holz-Her booth in hall 27 with

the included Atemag construction unit and represents, for example, a supplement to nesting machines.

The dowel unit installed in the machine offers two special new features. On the one hand, different driving depths and dowel projections can be set, in addition, the machine can process different dowel sizes.

The label printer unit, which is used for automated application of adhesive labels to processed panels for simplified picking and labelling, has been upgraded. Significant improvements have been made to the printing speed

and power supplies, and it is now much easier for the operator to use.

The ultrasonic unit was developed in co-operation with the German company EM Systeme, which specialises in cutting soft materials with ultrasound. A wide variety of soft materials are cut efficiently and accurately with 20kHz micro-vibrations. Quick-Fit Visual – making it easy to create 3D duct designs

Nordfab is the originator and the world’s largest manufacturer of clip-together ducting for industrial ventilation and process industry. One of their mindsets is that it should be easy to handle their ductwork.

“Pretty much anyone can install our Quick-Fit® ducting as it doesn’t require any screws, bolts or welding”, says Lee Darby, National

Ireland.

Research shows that by using Nordfab’s well-known clip-together ducting, Quick-Fit ducting, an installer can reduce the installation and downtime by up to 45% compared to using flanged ductwork. It is not only the ductwork itself that is easy to handle. Nordfab’s array of tools for easily designing ductwork installations, now includes an online 3D drawing tool, Quick-Fit Visual® (QFV), a very user-friendly design program that has been designed with the customer in mind.

What is QFV?

QFV is Nordfab’s easy-to-use, drag-and-drop tool for drawing 3D versions of Quick-Fit ductwork installations. The user doesn’t need to have prior knowledge in

CAD designs and they can easily access QFV through a free-to-use web application, available in PC browsers. QFV allows the user to work with a combination of wizards, duct path definitions, automated pressure loss calculations, and manually placed products to create an appropriate ducting solution.

Benefits of using QFV

Many of Nordfab’s authorised dealers appreciate how QFV is connected to Nordfab’s online quoting tool, meaning that the customer can receive an almost immediate quote and design.

After placing the order, the user will receive a bill of material and installation plan. If needed, the user can also receive a CAD file which can be imported into more comprehensive facility drawings. In simplest terms, QFV works in tandem with Nordfab’s quoting application, allowing the user to:

• Design a Quick-Fit ductwork installation with automatic calculation of duct sizing and system requirements.

• Present a quotation and visual plan.

• Source and procure all

components needed for the installation.

• Obtain the information needed to execute the installation.

“Our authorised dealers often receive requests from their customers to provide them with drawings and additional information about the ductwork being installed. By using QFV our dealers can easily create 3D designs to allow their clients to better visualise Nordfab duct systems in their working space”, explains Lee.

An award-winning design tool

QFV’s innovative approach has been recognised with a Visionary New Products award at an international exhibition in Las Vegas, USA. Now you will have a chance to try this easy-to-use design tool for yourself! Nordfab is exhibiting at the upcoming LIGNA exhibition in May, and they will demo QFV to all visitors in their booth.

“Nordfab is known for providing the world’s fastest ducting. With the use of QFV, we want our customers to receive a fast, friendly, and reliable solution every time they are doing business with us,” concludes Lee.

Optimising warehouse logistics

Handling wood-based materials is one of the core tasks of Hubtex products. Therefore, Ligna is very important for us as the leading trade fair in the wood sector.

“It holistically covers all topics along the value chain as well as the associated requirements for intra-logistics in the wood industry,” explains Hans-Joachim Finger, Managing Director Sales, Marketing and Purchasing.

“ In our field of activity, with the development of returnable forklift trucks and order picking vehicles, a lot is currently happening: new solution concepts are being

added, whilst at the same time existing concepts retain their relevance and often only require a selective improvement, for example in terms of energy consumption. At Hubtex, we are doing everything we can to cover this spectrum completely.”

The highlight for the Ligna trade fair 2023 is the new generation of the electric multi-directional

counterbalance truck FluX for load capacities of up to three tonnes.

“Visitors can experience the new FluX at our stand 65. The forklift is predominantly designed for use as a front loader. Thanks to the multi-directional steering it can also be used as a side loader for the transport of long-load goods.

A unique feature is the 360° HX steering in the compact threewheel running gear that ensures smooth changes in direction from longitudinal to transverse travel.”

With these innovations and other new products, such as the PhoeniX 2825 with an optional electronic load chart and a silent pump, Hubtex has what it considers to be the most modern product portfolio on the market in the field of multi-directional sideloaders and special vehicles.

“No other manufacturer offers such a wide product range for multi-directional forklifts with electric drive,” says Hans-Joachim.

Among other things, Hubtex is currently working intensively on assistance systems that, when used with order-picking vehicles, help companies in the timber industry to organise their warehouse logistics as optimally and safely as possible.

AES Group at Ligna – and here in the UK through J & C O’Meara

For over 30 years J & C O’Meara Ltd (J & C) have been supplying quality new, used and refurbished woodworking machinery throughout the UK.

The company was formed in 1990 by father and son team following many years as service, installation and maintenance engineers to the woodworking industry and originally set out as a service orientated company.

Over the years the company started to supply used machinery followed by accumulating new machinery agencies, all supported by our no-nonsense after-sales care and warranty package to ensure customer peace of mind.

In 2016, J & C introduced a new range of CNC machinery to the UK from the AES Group which although was a new name to the UK, AES have been producing machinery for over 30 years. Based in Bursa, Turkey the AES Group have become the largest CNC supplier in their home market.

Diverse new additions from Alvic

Following the success of their recent Innovation Events, Panelco has introduced 14 new designs to their ever popular Alvic collection. The designs were chosen from the feedback received from customers who helped Panelco in their decision. All 14 additions are unique and diverse and have enhanced the current Alvic offer with their distinct styles.

Three specific technologies are used across the new designs: Luxe the high gloss surface with a mirror effect and high resistance, a UV lacquered face and a MDF core provide a high quality product; Zenit is a super-matt lacquered surface with a soft elegant finish offers high resistance and anti-fingerprint properties; and finally Syncron which is composed using realistic depth of grain and texture, synchronising colour and detail. Adding a dynamic yet balanced and contemporary feel is the Avant Garde design, featuring contemporary polar white and black this horizontal grained effect offers a ribbed, almost milled effect to the face. Depth is added from the myriad of straight lines running across the board tempting you to touch the surface, Syncron technology used to offer a realistic finish.

Zenit Nuvola 03
Surfacing & Decorative Panels 84
Zenit Croma Sunset

The Croma collection, inspired by nature and landscapes, proved to be a real highlight at the recent well attended event, Panelco decided to add three of the striking colours, Sunset, Peach and Blue. Sunset gives you just that a combination of the blue sky during the last hours of sunlight mixed with orange and red hues. The wave like effect of the Peach tone gives real warmth to the subtle notes featured a calm natural woodgrain style. The deep blue of the sea evokes energy and depth to any interior, the playful rich blue gives a sense of joy and offers creative vision in abundance.

Inspired by the delicate aesthetic of marble we have the Nuvola designs; the elegant pink tones of Nuvola 02 offer a classical onyx style with real depth. Contrasting Nuvola 03 with blue and grey tones gives a more stone like marble appearance both with delicate features.

Continuing with the marble aesthetic is Sierra 02 a bold imperial green full of contrasting tones showing off the Syncron technology to give a realistic finish with depth of detail.

Panelco are proud to partner with Alvic where inspiration and innovation is second nature, continuously striving to improve processes and developing cutting edge technologies and commitment to strong creative designs. Sustainable development is a key factor in every process to minimise environmental

impact where possible, separating and recycling 90% of the non-hazardous waste to reduce this. Sawdust is converted into biomass to generate energy in their factories and wood waste is converted into particleboard, avoiding unnecessary waste where possible.

The eight different colours are offered in varying finishes to give 14 new additions to the

current range – contact the Panelco sales team for further information, to order a promotional binder or to order samples. All 14 effects are currently on display in the Panelco Design Studio – to request a visit, refer to the Panelco website

REHAU’s RAUVISIO noir represents a tour through various stylistic eras

From New York in the golden era of the 1920s to swinging London of the 1960s and the heart of minimalism in the 2020s –REHAU’s RAUVISIO noir surface collection boasts a colour palette that inspires interior architects and designers to create unique projects. Each of the 12 colours represents a decade, while reflecting the spirit of the time, thanks to its super matt finish. RAUVISIO noir has all the benefits of the RAUVISIO family – and can be cast in a single piece to match the design of other REHAU interior products.

Every stylistic era has its own colour and design scheme. The swinging 60s was chic and stylish featuring muted, classic colours which found their way into our homes. During the 1970s, newly won freedoms were reflected by vibrant colours and organic shapes. The 1990s discovered neon as a design element, while most recently, minimalist, often monochrome designs reproduced the spirit of the time.

REHAU’s elegant matt RAUVISIO noir collection brings this diverse stylistic history to life, thereby inspiring eye-catching, memorable designs.

“Our customers include interior architects and designers who have their own ideas and visions. We use mood boards to support their creative process and provide suggestions when looking for combinations – while consciously offering maximum freedom for individual design,” says Vincent Kummer, Marketing Director Interior Solutions at REHAU.

Enabling Exceptional Design

Enabling Exceptional Design is the motto of the Interior Solutions Division and the RAUVISIO noir collection is the perfect ambassador for this, and Enabling Exceptional Design is our mission. The surface collection therefore combines elegance and the highest level of craftsmanship. Our aim is to generate momentum so that the material can be used for exceptional creative achievements. The silky matt finish turns surfaces into a tactile and visual highlight. The robust HPL surface is a versatile material that is suitable for mechanically highly stressed horizontal use as a worktop in the kitchen or a counter in a shop, for example. The 12 carefully selected colours provide countless opportunities when designing furniture and interiors – especially as RAUVISIO noir can be combined with other REHAU products to match their design. For example, front panels can be extended to include perfectly fitting >>

RAUVOLET elegant matt cabinet shutters. And anyone seeking a more affordable alternative for vertical areas can perfectly combine this surface collection with RAUVISIO brilliant elegant matt –without having to compromise on the look and feel.

Ultimately, the end customer not only has an aesthetic highlight in their home, shop, office or bar – REHAU products also meet the highest standards in terms of quality and functionality. The easy to clean, antibacterial RAUVISIO noir material features anti-fingerprint and soft touch, is highly resistant to scratches and microscratches and reflects hardly any light even at flat

angles. Excellent heat and water resistance as well as impact resistance round off its functional benefits.

Experts are impressed by this combination of style and functionality: the collection has now received three design awards. RAUVISIO noir won the reddot award in 2021, followed by the German Design Award and iconic Innovative Interior Award in 2022.

Decorative Panels Lamination and Fineflex Metallics a recycled PET Collection

Decorative Panels Lamination, one of the Europe’s leading suppliers of decorative faced sheet materials has just introduced the Fineflex Metallic collection from premium surfacing brands FineDecor and Schattdecor, to its dp-specialist range.

The dp-specialist range is a comprehensive set of quality gloss and matt surface finishes from market leading brands all of which are laminated straight from the roll onto MDF or dp-lite, perfect for trade and volume customers.

With the merge of two premium surfacing brands; Fine Decor and Schattdecor, years of design expertise in the field of solid colours and decor printing have come together, along with pioneering technology to produce sustainable lacquer laminate surfaces. The two companies are united in their first joint product – Fineflex. A quality surface made with a percentage of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

92 SURFACING & DECORATIVE PANELS
Fineflex Shell White and Pearl Bronze Fineflex is particularly easy to clean and conforms to 6250 and 6222 standards

Through a patented lacquering process, a surface with a unique feel and anti-fingerprint technology has been achieved. Fineflex is particularly easy to clean and conforms to 6250 and 6222 standards.

Thanks to its moisture resistance, the surface is not only ideal for furniture surfaces, but is also particularly suitable for use in humid areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. With outstanding processing properties, Fineflex is an environmentally conscious alternative for 2D lamination, as a thermoforming film for three-dimensional surfaces and wrapping or postforming.

With growing awareness and an increased drive to provide sustainable options for the market, Decorative Panels Lamination are certain the addition of six FineFlex metallics will

be welcomed by their customers. Metallics have been coming into trend for some time now, but it has always been difficult to achieve consistency within the colour. Fineflex metallic surfaces do just that, their iridescent shimmer is visible throughout the pigment creating a luxurious finish to both the eye and the touch. The super matt finish is distinguished by the six warm and subtle earthy tones perfectly suited to create focal points and feature panels throughout the home.

Shattdecor and Fine Decor have a unique process to recycle the manufacturing scrap from their own production cycle into new raw material, thus bringing it full circle back into the production process. Decorative Panels

Lamination are now part of the solution offering the perfect combination of first-class design and surface quality with increased sustainability.

Dan Mounsey, HPP’s Marketing and Business Development Director, says: “We are really

pleased with the work that ArtiCAD has done with our doors over the years.

“Together with our extensive portfolio of offthe-shelf fittings, our sliding wardrobe doors and our vast range of MFC sheet material, having our products accessible to designers is an easy and natural solution when specifying our products in their designs.

“The inclusion of our latest products within ArtiCAD-Pro gives our customers yet another reason to choose HPP.”

ArtiCAD has been developing software solutions since 1992, allowing designers in the KBB industry and beyond to create realistic room plans and renders, from their all-encompassing and ever-popular ArtiCADPro desktop and cloud-based software. It gives designers access to a wide range of room design packages, presentation viewers and quoting/order management software.

With a simple yet powerful interface, ArtiCAD-Pro creates accurate, dimensioned room plans, 3D ‘photo-realistic’ images and a comprehensive bill of materials ready for pricing/ordering.

Developed to help finalise sales deals, ensure the accuracy of quotes and orders, it also minimises remedial work - there’s less chance of designers and then fitters having to make post-installation amendments if the plan has been ‘seen’.

In their pursuit of providing tools to engage with end-users, ArtiCAD have developed RoomPlanner, RoomStyler and RoomViewer applications, whereby customers searching for a new kitchen, bathroom or bedroom have the visual tools necessary to identify their needs and design requirements.

Getting creative with MEDITE MDF

Biophilic design and the use of natural materials such as wood, remain top trends in furniture and interiors in 2023.

Sustainability has also become an important topic in the industry, especially in recent years, and increasingly clients are looking for sustainable materials to be incorporated into designs, whatever the job.

Furniture makers and joiners working on renovations, fit-outs or kitchen and bathroom projects can find the ideal product for the job in the MEDITE MDF range. Manufactured using finely milled pine and spruce, which are pressed together to make them flat and smooth without any inconsistencies, allows furniture makers to achieve an even and uniform finish.

Those working on renovations or refurbishments for kitchens and bathrooms will find MEDITE MR and EXTERIOR suitable products thanks to its moisture resistance properties. EXTERIOR was originally developed for outdoor applications, but recently contractors have recently specified the panel as a substitute for birch plywood for interior bathroom and shower panelling. For laminating projects, there is MEDITE PREMIER. This multi-purpose MDF is suitable for the thinnest laminates and surface coatings. MEDITE CLEAR, an MDF panel manufactured with no added formaldehyde, is specifically developed for use in environmentally sensitive interior applications, where formaldehyde emissions need to be kept to the minimum.

Jack Hollings of Goldsmith Lane Joinery is particularly fond of MEDITE MDF: “I get through a lot of MEDITE material. Mostly, that means MEDITE MR of various thicknesses. The reasons for using MEDITE specifically are

that the product is of a very consistent quality so I always know what I’m going to be working with - how it will respond during the process. It is possible to achieve cut edges smooth enough to paint to a perfectly clean finish.

“When visiting my timber merchants, I’ll always ask the manufacturer of the material I buy and express my preference. I’m also impressed that MEDITE seems to be developing new products that will be useful in my work.”

All MEDITE MDF products are CARB2 compliant, in addition to being sustainable produced. This puts the brand at the forefront of ‘low formaldehyde’ innovation in Europe.

As a market leading manufacturer of environmentally conscious engineered wood panels, the brand’s commitment to sustainability is core to all levels of our business at MEDITE SMARTPLY; from our sustainably managed forests, to the manufacture of low embodied carbon materials, which contribute to sustainable building. MEDITE SMARTPLY’s products store carbon throughout their lifetime. Sourced from sustainably managed forests in Ireland, both the MDF and OSB ranges are FSC certified.

Furniture makers and joiners can find lots of design inspiration on MEDITE’s exclusive MDF community website, MEDITE Makes It Real –www.meditemakesitreal.com. Those who sign up can share work, gain inspiration, and win prizes that will enable them to build bigger and better with MDF. Sign up to receive a free gift. Define your decors with EGGER

After a successful launch in 2021, EGGER has revamped its Texture Meets Colour range, to offer a timeless, cost effective alternative to painted timber.

The demand for painted timber kitchens and cabinetry shows no sign of slowing, but a high price tag means the desired finish often exceeds the budget. EGGER has developed an affordable solution available with its Texture Meets Colour range.

Hand selected by EGGER’s Design Manager, Aimee Fletcher, there are 14 decors and three textures to play with, putting you in control of the finished surface look and feel. Simply pick a decor and choose a texture from the 42 combinations available.

The colour palette is standout, offering heritage shades of green, blue and grey paired with realistic textures, making it simple to design timeless furniture.

Reed Green, Fir Green and Sage Green connect with nature and come to life with the addition of texture, adding character to the surface and revitalising the on-trend colour tone.

Two blue shades, Misty Blue and Indigo Blue, are already in high demand, but when combined with a woodgrain texture, they are elevated to a high-end, elegant surface that has a classic finish.

Three other decors to note are Porcelain White, Cubanit Grey and Monument Grey. Used on their own or combined with statement colours, these straightforward decors are calm, refined, and versatile.

Each of the three textures display individual characteristics to offer alternative finishes across the range of colours. ST12 and ST19 both offer a subtle, contemporary finish, while the new ST40 texture has a bold, more

traditional look, with a deep matt structure that truly replicates a refined painted oak.

Aimee Fletcher, Design Manager, EGGER UK, said, “We’ve created a range of decors that can be tailored to individual projects. Our mix and match approach means elegant and timeless designs can easily be created with this lowmaintenance and cost-effective alternative to painted timber.”

All combinations are available as 18mm Eurodekor Faced Chipboard with coordinating edging. The carbon negative board is made in Hexham, Northumberland, using recycled wood and sawmill by-products. 102 SURFACING & DECORATIVE PANELS

Make more of surfaces with Unilin Panels Master Oak

With Master Oak, Unilin Panels has created a decorative surface that looks and feels just like oak.

Through technological leaps in the way it makes decorative panels, Unilin Panels has added definition and detail and textures that go deeper than ever before to make Master Oak a true interpretation of nature.

Master Oak compromises nothing for its authentic look. It remains just as easy to look after and just as durable as any other Unilin HPL or melamine surface. Compared to real oak, Master Oak is three times as scratch-resistant, more colourfast and more stain proof. It can be used on everything from desktops to shelves, doors, hotel furniture, storage, cupboards, partitions and more. Thanks to its excellent performance characteristics, the finish is also easy to clean and needs no specialist or ongoing maintenance.

At the heart of Master Oak’s authentic look and touch lies Unilin Timber Touch Technology. Regular HPL and melamine-faced panels only have around three or four depth levels which limits how much texture can be applied the surface. Unilin Timber Touch Technology allows for 64 different depth levels for 20 times more texture than regular surfaces. Giving Master Oak

the touch of real oak – from rough to smooth and everywhere in-between – the technology is also responsible for its matt finish with almost absent shine levels for a natural ‘unfinished’ effect.

Yet it’s not just the surface of Master Oak that is extraordinary. Unilin’s digital printing technology is also unique in the industry. A patented coating applied to the digital paper ensures that Master Oak has more colour-play and depth, as well as better sharpness and contrast. The end result is a decorative surface that looks exactly like oak. This print technology also allows for the largest pattern in the industry, which means an authentic look and fewer repeats.

Unilin Panels uses 100% recovered wood for Master Oak melamine-faced products. Recovered wood is rescued from incineration –a mix of wood waste from sawmills or woodprocessing and from post-consumer wood such as old furniture. Master Oak chipboard panels use 90% post-consumer wood. Using 100% recovered wood in the making of Master Oak is made possible by the industry’s most advanced

sorting and cleaning process. Developing the technology over the past six years and through using wood that would otherwise have been incinerated, Unilin gives continued life to more than 1,000,000 tonnes of wood every year.

Each of Master Oak’s six look has been created by Unilin Panels’ in-house design team. Looking towards global trends and exploring how natural wood finishes are used in commercial interiors, they have put together a range of authentic oak looks that are versatile and usable in real world applications. Master Oak Elegant black and Master Oak Everest white are exclusively available in coloured in core high pressure laminate (HPL). This special construction ensures that the edges are the same colour as the Master Oak finish. Ideal for furniture and cabinetry construction, coloured in core leaves a smart edge.

Master Oak is suited to virtually all interior uses. So, everywhere from retail, cafés and bars, hotel and offices to schools and hospitals can enjoy the comforting and relaxing look of natural oak.

HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300 on cue for Heywood Pool & Snooker Co

Heywood Pool & Snooker Co Ltd is a privately owned family business renowned for producing premium quality coin-operated pool tables for the pub and hospitality markets. Established in 1985 and with an annual turnover of around £3 million, the 15-strong team operates out of a 35,000 sq ft production facility in Heywood Lancashire.

The business was having issues with its existing beam saw and concluded it was the right time to invest in a more state-of-the-art replacement. Heywood’s managing director, Dave Hallworth takes up the story: “Our old saw had broken down due to a software problem which took three weeks to fix. I worked out that the downtime had cost the business upwards of £30,000, and decided that enough was enough.”

He continues: “We already had two HOMAG CNC machining centres in the workshop and they had worked tirelessly for many years. Consequently, when it came to selecting a new saw, we had no hesitation in contacting HOMAG first. Their machinery is legendary for its cutting edge technology, precision, build and finish quality.

HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300 - networked production for batch size 1 and smaller series

“We sat down with the HOMAG area sales manager and discussed our requirements. He recommended the SAWTEQ B-300 because it gave us the option of having the operating screen on the left or the right of the saw. Because of the layout of our production facility, it was important for us to have the screen on the left and the smaller saws didn’t give us this option.”

Installation and training

The installation of the saw went exactly to plan. Once Heywood had dismantled its old saw, the HOMAG machine was delivered and fitted within six working days. The engineers who completed the install also trained Haywood’s operators on site.

“The HOMAG engineers were fantastic,” explains machine shop manager, Steve Guidon. They were extremely thorough and accommodating, making sure we understood how to get the best out of the saw from day one. The SAWTEQ B-300 has exceeded our expectations. It is so much better and more efficient than our previous saw.

“It is easy to operate, extremely fast and delivers excellent quality. The cuts are squarer and more precise; we get consistent quality cuts no matter what size of panel we are processing.”

CADmatic 5 – Intuitive operation

The CADmatic 5 control system for the HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300 features a new assistance graphic that clearly shows machine operators what they have to do next. This results in more efficient processing and consistent output. The powerTouch 2 user interface has simple tapping and swiping functions on its 24in full-HD monitor with multi-touch display in widescreen format.

The optional intelliGuide system features a coloured LED strip at the cutting line. This enables intuitive operation and a quicker, safer way of working, as the machine operators

can immediately see if a part has been fully processed, needs to be cut again or can be disposed of as waste.

In conclusion managing director Dave Hallworth says: “We are absolutely delighted with our new HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300. Not only is the machine superbly made, fast, efficient and easy to use, but also the backup service from HOMAG UK is fantastic. It gives us real peace of mind that we have partnered with such a professional company. Why would I buy from any other machine supplier?”

Vollmer doubles benefits with new Loroch TWIN

Following the astounding success of two new circular saw blade grinding machines launched by Vollmer launched last year, the saw blade sharpening experts are delighted to now present the new Loroch TWIN 860.

The revolutionary new Loroch TWIN 860 is a space-saving concept with a compact 2000 x 1250 x 1980mm footprint that introduces two different grinding processes in a single machine tool. This gives the end user a machine that can process both carbide tipped (TCT) saw blades for the wood, sawmill and metal cutting industries, as well as HSS, saw blades primarily used in the metal cutting sectors. With the introduction of a fifth axis, a vast selection of TCT blades can be processed in addition to the common metal cutting circular saw blades. As with all Loroch machines, the new TWIN 860 machine grinds with the saw blade rotating. In each case, the grinding process consists of a precise, controlled movement of the grinding head and rotation of the saw blade with both axes

controlled simultaneously in complete synchronicity.

HSS circular saw blades from 60860mm can be sharpened and recut on the new TWIN 860 machine and automated chamfering is possible from diameters of 75mm and above. With HSS saws, the rake and clearance angles can be freely selected and this grinding process also permits the processing of solid carbide saw blades, friction saws and TK or TA saw blades such as carbide or cermet tipped thin kerf blades with chip guiding notches. This flexibility provides a remarkable range of opportunities for end users.

For the sharpening of TCT saw blades from 145-700mm diameter, the TWIN 860 has a secondary grinding process whereby the tooth to be ground will remain in a stationary position with grinding performed exclusively by the grinding head. The feeding of each tooth is undertaken by the ultraprecise centre drive that intuitively identifies any pitch differences in the saw blade and automatically processes any irregular pitch

patterns in the saw blades. In both grinding processes, complete machining is performed with only one DIA or CBN peripheral grinding wheel (14F1) in each case.

The benefits of the new TWIN 860 go far beyond the ability to undertake both fixed position and rotary processing of the HSS and TCT saw blades through its five servo-driven axes and the ability to detect and process different saw blade pitches. The flexibility of the TWIN 860 enables end users to process everything from straight back teeth, peg teeth, friction teeth, curved back teeth with chamfer, solid carbide teeth as well as TK saw blades and tooth shapes that include 301, 302/303, 304, 311 and many others.

The multi-purpose machine also has an exceptionally high angular precision level, which is a benefit of the ultra-stiff machine base that minimises vibration and the extremely powerful blade clamping system – both attributes that enhance surface finishes and edge quality.

From a user-friendliness perspective, programming is fast and effortless with the

touchscreen control that provides easily understandable symbols that intuitively direct the operator through the process. To further simplify operation, the TWIN 860 automatically suggests favourable machining data to guide the user. Furthermore, grinding wheel mounting is automated to minimise setup times. Possible operating errors are reduced to a minimum. For the machining of HSS circular saws, it is possible to pre-programmed saw blades to separate the machine programmer from the operator. The operator only has to clamp the respective saw blade, close the door and press start – another feature that minimises operator errors.

From a saw blade perspective, the TWIN 860 offers a chamfering angle of 75°

for HSS saws and 145mm for TK and TCT saws with a tooth pitch of 1-40mm on HSS and TK saws and 6-60mm for TCT blades. The machine is capable of processing chamfer/bevel angles up to 45° and can grind blades with a maximum blade width of 8mm.

HOMAG is the brand of choice for Woodcraft World

Sarting a brand new business venture is never easy. Anyone embarking on a start-up company in the last 12 months or so, however, has had to face the added challenges of supply chain issues, the aftermath of COVID and Brexit restrictions.

“It’s certainly been an interesting process,” says Brett Manchett, factory manager of the fledgling Woodcraft World joinery business based in Kettering, Northamptonshire. He continues, “We began trading in early 2022 and to go from zero to where we are now in less than a year is amazing.

“Once our directors, Kevin Baker and Andy Hubbard, had made the decision to set up a new joinery business it was a question of how quickly could we get all our ducks in a row ready for launch.

“As a company, we believe the most important piece of the jigsaw is investing in the best machinery available. I’ve been involved in the woodworking industry for over 15 years and during that time I have gained experience of working with a number of the leading machinery

brands.

“From the outset we made the decision to buy what we consider to be the best equipment on the market. Without doubt, HOMAG machinery is head and shoulders above the competition. Not only are the machines exceptionally well built, but they are also technically the most advanced and reliable machines money can buy.

“If you want to consistently produce top quality products you need to invest in the best machinery and with HOMAG, that’s exactly what we have done.”

The shopping list

“To create our high performance workshop we wanted a beam saw, an edge bander, a CNC

drilling centre and a cabinet press. To achieve this meant working closely with HOMAG to make sure we could get the equipment delivered when we wanted it and all at the same time. This was no easy task, but HOMAG bent over backwards to help.

“They had a SAWTEQ B-200 at a show in Barcelona and were able to secure that for us along with an EDGETEQ S-240 edge bander and CABTEQ S-200 that were available from stock.

“The extremely popular HOMAG BHX 050 drilling CNC proved a harder nut to crack; the lead time for a new model from HOMAG didn’t fit with our schedule. After a bit of searching, however, we were able to source an excellent second hand machine which could be delivered at the same time as the new HOMAG kit.”

HOMAG – a team you can trust

“I must give a big shout out to the HOMAG engineers who installed the equipment and trained our team. They were absolutely brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble; engineers Ian, Carl and Colin made sure we were totally happy with the machines before they left.

“On the training front they were extremely thorough, running through everything with our four operators, including parts ordering and machine maintenance. They were so helpful and left no stone unturned which meant we were able to go fully operational almost immediately.

“One of the benefits of the HOMAG equipment is the quality of the software that controls the machines. Whether its woodWOP, CADmatic 5 or other control systems, they are all intuitive and easy to learn. The simple touch screen operation is quick and instinctive to use so our operators can move from one machine to another with ease.”

Quality results and reliable performance

“Each HOMAG machine has performed superbly;

the SAWTEQ B-200 is extremely fast and precise, consistently cutting panels to very high accuracy. Although the edge bander is an entry level machine, the quality of the edge finishing is exceptional and we consistently achieve a really clean finish.

“All this good work can be wasted if the cabinets we make from the panels are not glued and pressed absolutely square. This is where the CABTEQ S-200 comes into its own. It is easy to operate, precise and fast; it enables us to produce finished cabinets which are always true.

“What we’ve achieved as a business in our first year we couldn’t have done without the help

of the HOMAG team. To a person, they have a positive attitude and get things done. If issues occur, most are sorted out online. If an engineer has to come out, however, they are usually with us inside 24 hours. We couldn’t be with a better partner,” concludes Manchett.

Crosscutting recycled plastic with Salvador

Berry Global has increased production of its recycled plastic garden furniture with a Salvador SuperAngle 600 automatic crosscut saw from Daltons Wadkin.

Berry bpi manufacture a wide range of innovative packaging solutions and engineered products focused on the circular economy. As one of Europe’s largest plastic recyclers the company is proud to produce its own brand of plastic wood, Plaswood. The material is a sustainable, durable and maintenance free alternative to traditional materials and demand is increasing rapidly.

Daltons Wadkin are a leading supplier of industrial machinery for processing wood, plastic, composites and metals. Specialising in woodworking machinery, CNC routers, fibre lasers, panel saws and automatic crosscut saws, the Salvador brand has been a key part of their portfolio for over 15 years.

Challenging the status quo

With on-going growth under-pinning diversification, R & R Joinery director Richard Wardale needed to solve a growing problem with his staff having to use different abrasives for the broader variety of jobs the company was winning. Clearly, a solution to this problem was required. Furniture & Joinery Production caught up with Richard to find out more.

R & R Joinery was set-up in Knowsley in April 2016, and very satisfyingly, the business has enjoyed steady growth from day one. But like any business that wants to grow, we are constantly looking to expand and diversify the work we do so that we open new sales avenues for the business. That, in itself, will bring challenges and opportunities for the production process.

Hello Richard, tell us about R&R Joinery

The main work we carry out is commercial joinery, which includes solid surface and involves working with all types of hardwood, veneer, laminates lacquers and paints, and we also do work for the commercial catering industry for blue chip clients. In the commercial catering space, we create solid surface worktops and panels for commercial kitchens – with the help of Mirka’s tools and abrasives.

What challenging issues have you encountered in your production process recently?

For the work we carry out, abrasives are a key part of the preparation and finishing process, but there were two specific issues we have faced.

The first was the fact that the team was constantly having to change the abrasives on jobs, which reduced the efficiency of the task. The second was the number of abrasives we had in stock to do the work.

To counteract these issues, we upgraded to the Mirka Galaxy abrasive range and doing this has enabled the business to streamline the abrasive portfolio our employees can choose from. This, in turn, has allowed us to save money when purchasing consumables, which we have then reinvested in the business.

‘When using Galaxy we noticed it was tough and durable and the ceramic grain, which was new to us, provided a consistent cut that was as effective on the first use as it was on the last’
118 INSTALLATIONS
R & R Joinery director
Richard Wardale

What effect has this had on the business?

Since making the upgrade we have not looked back, and we have noticed two distinct benefits. The first is that Mirka Galaxy’s wide range of grits (p40-p2000) ensures we can easily choose the right grit for the job at hand. Its versatility also means it is suitable for use on both solid surface and wood, so we do not have to change abrasives depending on the surface. The second is that Galaxy’s multi-hole design ensures there is less dust being produced and this has made both our employees and customers very happy.

When did you resolve to fix the issue, and what were initial instincts?

We decided to fix the issue when we noticed how much we were spending on abrasives. In the beginning I was not 100% sure if there was an abrasive out there that was hard-wearing enough and could handle the demands of our work. This all changed once we did our due diligence and tested Mirka Galaxy on one of the solid surface jobs we were working on. When using it we noticed it was tough and durable and the

ceramic grain, which was new to us, provided a consistent cut that was as effective on the first use as it was on the last.

How did you assess the various solutions and possible providers?

Like any good business we did our research. We received recommendations from our peers, but as we were already a Mirka customer we sat down with Steven Page from Mirka to explain what we were looking for. He then came to visit us on site and explained that when using Galaxy over other abrasives we would not have to switch from one abrasive to another and that the ceramic grain was an asset when it came to the lifespan of the abrasive.

What sort of advice were you given?

The advice we were given by Steven Page was simple – it was to try the product out on a job to find out its capabilities and whether it suited the jobs the team were doing on a day-to-day basis. This allowed us to come to our own conclusions about whether the abrasive was right for us rather than being pigeon-holed to use a specific abrasive.

What made you conclude that Mirka was the right partner to provide the solution?

We concluded that Mirka was the right partner for our business because the Galaxy abrasive fits our needs and requirements, which are constantly changing based on the jobs we do, and it came in at a price point that made it viable to work with.

After you had made your decision, what was the process like from order to acquiring the solution, and what was the response and set-up like?

The process was smooth from start to finish and we got the first batch of abrasives from our local supplier Blu-Sky (UK) Ltd within a few days of making the decision to use Galaxy. The solution has allowed us to provide our customers and employees with a dust-free work environment and the advice we have been given by Steven has allowed our team to use the Galaxy abrasive at optimal level. We did not have any training as such, but we know that if we have any questions, we can just touch base with him and we will get an answer very quickly.

This recent experience has exceeded our expectations and we would recommend Mirka’s abrasives to anyone that asked us about them.

Quickfit TL5 dowels combine versatility with performance

Products 120

The innovative Quickfit TL5 ‘Full Metal Jacket’ dowels from cabinet hardware expert Titus, provide strong, reliable joints in all types of wooden materials, including MDF, chipboard and solid wood. This means that it is no longer necessary to use different dowels for different materials, or to reinforce joints by adding supplementary wooden dowels.

In addition, the new dowels – which are part of the Titus ‘Engineered for Your Kitchen’ programme – offer fast, tool-free insertion, reducing assembly time by up to 50% for homeassembled furniture. Alternatively, for maximum efficiency in volume production applications, they can be inserted automatically using Titus FastFit machines.

Quickfit TL5 dowels, which are used in conjunction with Titus Cam5000 cams, incorporate an expanding steel sleeve that provides high resistance to torsion and pull out. This ensures rigid furniture construction, with complete freedom from the tendency for joints to loosen over time. Furniture using the dowels can also be disassembled and reassembled repeatedly without compromising joint integrity.

The dowels are designed for insertion into a 5mm hole and, on insertion, they positively and reliably engage with the hole, greatly simplifying subsequent assembly steps. When edge inserted, the dowels immediately engage with the cam and remain securely positioned until the cam is tightened.

A further key feature is that the special design of the dowel head adopted for these innovative and time-saving products means that the performance of Quickfit TL5 dowels is unaffected by edge-to-hole-centre (ETHC) tolerances of up to ± 1mm. Therefore, they easily accommodate not only drilling inconsistencies, but also the natural movement of wooden panels.

The dowels can be supplied in versions to suit ETHC dimensions of 24 and 34mm. The required hole diameter for the face board is 5mm, and for the edge board 8mm. The minimum hole depth in the face board is 12.5mm.

honey tones, up to extremely dark styles. What all these décors have in common is the classic streaked grain, sometimes more and sometimes less pronounced. As the provider of Europe’s largest range of immediately available edgings, Ostermann is also well-positioned in ABS edgings with oak decor. There are about 240 different items with the dimensions 23 x 1mm here alone. There are also numerous additional standard widths and thicknesses. Which is why anyone looking for their very personal oak favourite should definitely take a look at the Ostermann online shop. All

the ABS edgings that are available with oak décors will be shown under the search term “#Highlights03”. If you’re looking for real wood, you’ll also find plenty of wood veneer edgings in oak in the edging specialists’ online shop.

23, 33, 43 or 100mm

In addition to choosing the colour, interior fittings are primarily about the variety of dimensions available. To finish entire rooms, colour-matched ABS edgings with different widths are often needed, for example 100mm for the skirting board, 43mm for work surfaces and 23mm for fronts or shelves. This is why most oak decor edgings from Ostermann are available in all four standard widths (23, 33, 43 and 100 mm), and in many cases even in three different thicknesses (0.4, 1 and 2mm). If anyone thinks this variety is not quite enough, at Ostermann they can have a 100mm edging cut in the individually required width.

Ordered, packed and delivered

Any orders received for goods in stock that reach Ostermann by 4pm will be shipped on the same day. If a later shipping date is required, you can also set your required shipping date for your goods during an online order before sending the shopping cart.

Hettich UK sheds new light on kitchen storage

When it comes to family life and entertaining, the kitchen has taken centre stage in the British home. Kitchen design today must speak volumes about the home owner’s style and way of life.

But the kitchen is still a place for storage, preparation and, yes, doing the dishes. It needs to perform on a practical level while delivering the desired visual impact.

It’s a conundrum which continuously exercises minds at Hettich, resulting in some gamechanging solutions.

One of which is LightTower – a new take on tower unit larder storage featuring the exceptional AvanTech YOU platform drawer system but with the addition of internal lighting. What’s really special about the lighting aspect is that it is hassle-free, with no connection required. LightTower illuminates each drawer automatically when the drawer is opened. Delivery of the even, 4000K light requires no complicated connections because a practical rechargeable battery pack simply adheres to the rear panel.

For kitchen manufacturers it is ideal – a straightforward way to add practicality and value for customers in an eye-catching package. But retrofit is also an inspired application for LightTower – adding a transformational element to any project.

The package

LightTower comprises five pre-assembled drawer boxes, with runners and internal fronts, in a choice of widths, each individually illuminated. Smooth, effortless drawer opening and closing is assured thanks to high-quality 30 kg runners, and installation is easy. LightTower comes with a jig to help mark up the cabinet for fitting the runners with precision.

Hinges are an additional option where existing hinges do not provide the zero protrusion required for the drawers to slide open unobstructed.

These are times when home-owners need reassurance about investing in their main asset. Will their purchase stand the test of time in style, functionality and quality? Does it represent good value. Does it add value? LightTower certainly ticks all of these.

Now you see it, now you don‘t

The increasing tendency to replace compartmentalised living with multi-functional spaces means a creative bonanza for kitchen designers. All eyes are on their designs – all the time. It calls for a fresh approach to kitchen presentation and a focus on how to ensure a living space can adopt different modes for its diverse roles across the day.

This, according to Hettich, is where sliding and folding doors come into their own.

Hettich‘s WingLine folding door systems, for

example, enable the production of cabinet fronts with a push/pull-to-move opening mechanism which provides access to a cabinet or defined area with just one movement of the hand – ideal for room dividers, or concealing a kitchen in a multi-functional living space.

Scene change

Sliding solutions, such as SlideLine M, enable a complete scene change in the living space by alternately concealing and revealing functional objects such as crockery and glasses during the day, and more decorative items or photos and books when the mood changes to relaxation or entertaining.

Between them, Hettich’s full range of sliding

and folding door systems for full height and smaller fronts, provide the opportunity to impress customers with tailored and flexible door solutions for highly individual living spaces. With its innovative storage solutions such as LightTower and WingLine/SlideLine, Hettich is making a major contribution to interior solutions which embrace contemporary living.

Hettich’s support for flexible manufacturing via its platform models, allows manufacturers to offer customized furniture for the real world, both in the way it looks and the way it performs. End users will surely appreciate the opportunity to get involved and creative with their own ideas and achieve living spaces which align with their aspirations.

HOMAG turns up the heat with Makor drying technologies

Makor is a world leader in coating and finishing technologies. Its partnership with HOMAG UK has enabled it to broaden the reach of the Makor brand. For the woodworking industry, Makor offers a number of advanced and efficient technologies for the drying and polymerisation of all kinds of paint finishes on panels, profiles and windows.

From its Flexi Oven, created to dry water or solvent based coatings when longer permanence is required, to its Linear Dry Oven, ideal for drying waterborne paint when shorter drying times are needed, Makor’s drying solutions have been designed to meet the demands of each specific drying task.

Fast, efficient drying of panels

The latest addition to the Makor range of panel drying ovens is the vertical Flexi Oven. Developed to offer maximum flexibility both for drying and storing, different drying times and panel dimensions can be set for tray. The Flexi Oven has a load speed of up to 8m/min and a cycle time of 40 seconds.

Being a modular design, the Flexi Oven can be specified with 20 trays (4.2m high) or 50 trays (6.5m high). The tray lengths come in either 3.6m or 5.5m lengths and the oven can have up to three units in line.

The Makor Fastdry Linear Tunnel is ideal for the flash off and drying of varnished panels that require short-medium permanence time. The panel is exposed to a hot air flow moved by fans within a recirculating loop. This causes rapid evaporation, which enables quick drying of heatsensitive materials without product degradation.

Designed to be versatile, The Fastdry Linear Tunnel is modular in construction with length options ranging from three to 30 metres. Numerous drying modules are available including laminar air (slow-speed air movement

for initial flash-off, high-velocity air nozzles with hot or cooled air), TL (luminescent tubes), IR (infrared), NIR (near infrared) and UV (ultraviolet) lamps.

The Makor Multilevel Compact Drying Oven is perfect for small or fully automatic lines. Technically advanced ventilation systems enable short drying times for fast reticulation paints, flashing off paints before UV curing or drying glues to subsequently veneer panels. The oven has six overlapped belted trays housed in a highly insulated chamber and, with a minimal footprint, it is a compact drying and storing solution.

The Multidry 90 Vertical Oven is Makor’s high performance model. It is designed to dry water or solvent based coatings that require medium

to long drying times. Particular attention has been made to the structural design of bar-trays; this ensures maximum load capacity, thus optimising the oven’s performance in terms of durability and stability. Its modular design allows for working widths of 1300 mm or 1600mm, with bar trays (3600-5500 mm) or belt trays (5500-7000 mm).

The Ultradry 1+2 is a UV-drying oven for ultra-fast drying. It instantly dries mono and bicomponent UV paints, clear and pigmented, matt or gloss. This modular oven can be specified with one to three lamps.

Commenting on the latest drying technologies from Makor, Simon Brooks, managing director of HOMAG UK stated: “Makor has been designing

and manufacturing drying ovens and systems for painting lines for more than 50 years.

“The company’s latest technologies demonstrate Makor’s commitment to providing customers with some of the most advanced and efficient coating and finishing solutions on the market. “Whether you need to dry coatings on panels or profiles, Makor has the answer. Its drying solutions can be standalone ovens or complete automated finishing cells that include sanding, spray finishing or painting and drying.” For a demonstration or more information on the Makor range of drying technologies for panels or profiles, contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

‘Sad’ if it happens?

The current Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is reported to have said that wood-burning stoves could be banned in some areas to combat air pollution under proposals – this could include hand-loaded industrial wood burning heaters that are not fitted with any abatement equipment for the reduction of fine particulate matter. Chris Franklin MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd, a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipmentcontinues his series of articles exclusively for Furniture and Joinery Production. In this issue he looks at hand-loaded heating systems and their alleged effect on pollution.

Geraint Davies, Labour chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Air Pollution, who has backed the move, said: ”Wood burners are creating pollution hotspots in middle-class areas and cause tens of thousands of cases of avoidable children’s asthma attacks, premature dementia, and early deaths.

The popularity of wood-burners has soared in the past decade but emissions of one of the most harmful types of air pollution have increased by 35% between 2010 and 2020.

Known as PM 2.5, particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter invisible to the naked eye and small enough to pass through the lungs and into the bloodstream.

If we are to reach World Health Organisation targets in London by 2030, then we must take tougher action on wood-burning stoves and the mayor is taking a welcome first step as wood burners and coal already make up 40% of PM2.5 particulate pollution.

Wood-burning stoves, which would be banned under the proposals for urban areas with poor air quality, are increasingly popular. They are most popular in south-east England, where 16% of households have them, compared with 5% nationally.

It is estimated that between a quarter and a third of all of London’s fine-particle pollution comes from domestic wood burning. In January, during a period of very high air pollution, it contributed half the toxic emissions in some areas of the capital, according to King’s College London research.

Khan said: “Non-transport sources contribute half of the deadly emissions in London, so we need a hard-hitting plan of action to combat them similar to moves I am taking to reduce pollution from road vehicles.

“With more than 400 schools located in areas exceeding legal pollution levels, and such significant health impacts on our most vulnerable communities, we cannot wait any longer, and I am calling on government to

provide the capital with the necessary powers to effectively tackle harmful emissions from a variety of sources.”

The Mayor has asked the environment department to amend the Clean Air Act to allow for the creation of zero-emission zones where the burning of solid fuel is not allowed from 2025 onwards.

With the threat of continually rising conventional fuel costs and the banning of gas boilers and heaters in the future the use of readily available alternative fuels is essential but not if this has an adverse effect on air quality.

So, what can be done about this?

Since 2012 Ranheat has been working on its range of ceramic flue gas filtration units.

The Renewable Heat Incentive introduced a minimum standard for flue gas emissions from biomass fuelled boilers.

Warm air heaters were excluded from the scheme and hand loaded systems would not meet the stringent requirements of the scheme.

Wood burning boilers and heaters fitted with ceramic flue gas filtration are regularly tested by independent laboratories as part of the part B permitting regulations that require all appliances burning wood-waste at a rate over 90kg per hour to have an annual test carried out. The limit for particulate is 60mg/m3. With a Ranheat ceramic flue gas filter fitted the results are consistently below 2mg/m3

Asset finance – all you need to know

There are many forms of finance available to businesses today, but one of the most effective for companies wanting to invest in their growth without impacting cashflow, is Asset Finance.

So, what is Asset finance? Very simply, it’s a type of financing that enables businesses to acquire a range of assets, including those needed by Furniture and Joinery manufacturers of all sizes. This can range from moulders and multi-rip saws to CNC machines and edgebanders

Asset finance products will be familiar to many, and involve the use of loans, leases, or hire purchase agreements. In these arrangements, the lender – or lessor – provides the funds needed to acquire the asset, and the borrower – or lessee – repays the loan or lease payments over an agreed period.

There are several types of asset finance, including:

1. Hire Purchase: Hire Purchase is a type of asset finance where the borrower agrees to pay for the asset in instalments over a specified period. During the hire purchase agreement, the borrower is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the asset. At the end of the term, the borrower has the option of purchasing the asset outright.

2. Refinancing (Capital Release): Refinancing

is a quick way to access the cash from assets on an existing balance sheet and use that value elsewhere within a business – for example, to fund a deposit on new equipment or ease cash flow.

3. Sale and HP Back: Sales and HP Back is a form of refinance that can be used against most types of equipment, making it suitable for companies of all sizes, including sole traders. It works by the lender purchasing the asset and financing it back to the borrower. Repayments are calculated in line with the income stream that will be generated by the asset and at the end of the refinance term, the borrower owns the asset.

4. Finance Lease: Finance Lease lets the borrower use the equipment without having to buy it outright. Rent is paid for the full use of the asset and the rental period is flexible and can be tailored. During this period, the borrower pays the full cost of the asset, including interest and when the end of the primary lease term is reached, the borrower can choose to continue to use the asset by entering a secondary rental period; sell the asset and keep a portion of the income from the sale, or return it to the lender

5. Operating Lease: Operating lease is a type of asset finance where the borrower rents the asset for a short period. At the end of the lease term, the borrower can choose to either return the asset or continue leasing it.

Asset finance offers several benefits for businesses, including:

1. Preservation of capital: Asset finance enables businesses to acquire assets without using their own capital, preserving their cash reserves for other purposes

2. Improved cash flow: Asset finance spreads the cost of acquiring assets over an extended period, reducing the impact on cash flow

3. Access to the latest technology: Asset finance enables businesses to acquire the latest equipment and technology without having to make a large capital investment

Anton Nebbe, Head of PR and Communications with Close Brothers Asset Finance said: “Asset finance is an important tool for businesses looking to acquire and invest in capital assets. By providing access to the latest technology, preserving capital, improving cash flow, and offering tax benefits, asset finance can help businesses grow and prosper.” www.closeasset.co.uk/woodworking

Edging Supplies – an experienced team supplying the furniture market

Edging Supplies was formed in July 2018 by Kal Sandhu and Derrick Gray. Based in Malvern, Worcestershire, the company was set up to supply the furniture manufacturing industry with edgebanding and ancillary products. With over 25 years’ involvement in this market, and a good customer base built up over many years, Kal and Derrick were well placed to set themselves up – so long as they had a good supplier base behind them ...

Edging Supplies’ chief supply partner is TECE, based in Turkey. TECE was established in 1987 and is now a major producer and supplier of edgebanding worldwide, and has supported the company since its conception. It is suppliers like TECE and many more that allow Edging Supplies to provide service and support to its customer base. “Our ethos of quality, service and reliability is closely aligned with our suppliers in this everdemanding world,” says Kal.

“Edging Supplies has a comprehensive range of edgebandings and ancillary products which we stock at our warehouse in Malvern. There are over 400 product lines, comprising two million+ metres of edgebanding, all available on a nextday delivery.”

“The pallet carrier and parcel carrier the company uses delivers the service our customers need to keep their production running smoothly – this in turn gives the end-customer the product they want in the timeframe agreed.”

Customer orders can be taken by phone, email, WhatsApp messaging, and via the website as an enquiry. If received prior to the carrier collection times, the orders will be dispatched on a nextday service. Deliveries can be arranged on a timed delivery or the standard next-day service. For special colours, Edging Supplies can match from a extensive selection held in the office, or arrange a colour match directly from TECE. This can be done within two weeks, with production and delivery being about four weeks from order. Edging Supplies holds a range of products, from ABS, PVC, melamine and veneer edgebandings, to ancillary products such as self-adhesive cover caps, repair waxes, edgebander adhesives and panel cleaners.

“We are committed to working closely with our customers, so as to customise their individual needs regarding the range of products and sizes,” says Derrick, “and specific stockholding to ensure reliable continuity of supply – even as customer usage fluctuates due to seasonal variations or trend changes in the market in general. It is our belief that our business must be proactive to meet both the customers’ needs, and what is happening in the market as a whole – staying one step ahead is crucial to the future of the business.

In a recent update from Edging Supplies, as from the March 2023 the company has increased its warehouse space from 4500 sq ft to 11500 sq ft to meet current demands and for future growth over the next few years.

“We have also extended our edging range to include 26 Saviola colours,” says Kal, “and more recently, 40 new décors launched earlier this year by Kronospan – all of these are available on a next day delivery service. Our plans are to extend our range of edgings by a further 20% by the end of this year,” concluded Kal.

A bespoke joinery manufacturer in Norfolk has purchased a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating.

Wentwood Kitchens in Attleborough is a family run, independent bespoke kitchen manufacturer, working with private clients, interior designers and architects.

Joe Went, Managing Director at Wentwood Kitchens started to investigate the purchase of a wood waste heater when the business expanded its workshop, doubling the space from 200 to 400 sq. metres, and giving the space to create a separate machine shop area alongside a dedicated assembly area.

Wentwood Kitchens was spending between £300 and £500 a month on skips to remove waste wood, including MDF and chipboard waste that was being generated from the manufacturing process. Meanwhile, the company was paying to run electric heaters to warm the workshop when the weather turned colder.

Joe realised that purchasing a wood waste heater could save the company money on waste disposal, whilst providing free heating to the building. He contacted Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology about wood waste burner options, then purchased a WT5 for the company to burn the chipboard, MDF, hardwood and softwood off-cuts.

The heater was installed into Wentwood Kitchens workshop by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Some of the heat from the wood waste burner was vented into the showroom, to help keep that space warm too. Wentwood Kitchens took advantage of the heat dump option, to allow the wood waste heater to be used throughout the year, by sending the heat to atmosphere in the summer months.

Joe says: “If you run a manufacturing business that generates wood waste, this is an easy decision to make. I’m so glad we ordered one, and actually wish we’d invested in one sooner! The heater keeps both workshops and the showroom nice and warm, and we’re saving money on waste disposal and heating bills. The whole process has been hassle-free, from getting a quote to the installation and delivery, and the service has been second to none. We would highly recommend the team and heaters at Wood Waste Technology.”

Kurt Cockroft says: “Whatever the primary reason for purchase – heat or waste disposal, a wood waste heater is a cost effective and productive solution for companies that generate waste wood, and some companies get payback on the investment in less than 12 months.”

Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.

In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.
