STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE
In 1995, a dozen years before Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone to the world, I created a website called The Style Group. Our advisory board included the chairman of one of the major movie studios, the founder of a leading advertising agency, a professional basketball player, an actor, a supermodel, and a beauty expert best known for shaping practically every major celebrity’s eyebrows. The latter, of course, was Anastasia Soare.
As we all know, Anastasia (AKA the brow queen) would go on to create the Anastasia Beverly Hills cosmetics brand with her daughter, Claudia, and gain more Instagram followers than NARS, KKW, and ULTA combined—over 19 million. Our GENLUX publisher, and my beautiful better half, Cecilia Moreno, was Anastasia’s first makeup counter girl at her Beverly Hills salon. Five years ago, Anastasia sold a minority share in her company (over $3 billion valuation), making her a very wealthy woman. For our shoot with Anastasia, I commandeered photographer Ella Hovsepian (a newbie to our ranks), brilliant stylist Coco DiGiaimo, genius makeup artist Luis Casco, and our go-to hairstylist Robert Steinken. We drove through the hallowed gates of Beverly Park to capture Anastasia at her stunning new digs (p71) . For most of you, it’s not her home that would excite you; it would be her Shaq-size closet loaded with fashion, shoes, and handbags. No cameras allowed, thank you.
On our cover, we are excited to have prima ballerina Misty Copeland, the first black female principal dancer in ABT’s 75-year history. I first learned of Misty not from ballet but from her 2011 performance with Prince during his Welcome
2 America tour, where she pirouetted to “The Beautiful Ones” at Madison Square Garden.
It was photographer Marc Baptiste who brought the idea of featuring this extraordinary woman, and he and Misty met at The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights for our exclusive photo session. Through our interview, I learned about Misty’s early life, childhood bullying, and how it was Mariah Carey who helped her through some of her professional struggles (p88).
True to our GENLUX tenets of fashion and philanthropy, Misty—once named to the prestigious International Best-Dressed list—is convinced the work she’s doing on behalf of The Misty Copeland Foundation to empower the next generation of dancers of color will be “the proudest thing to come out of my career.”

WE HEAD OVER TO CANON TO DRINK IN SOME OF PERI-A’S BUBBLY FASHION AND DISCOVER A CHARMING ITALIAN COFFEE SHOP
—STEPHEN KAMIFUJI
Quaint is a word seldom used to describe any area of Beverly Hills. So discovering the charming iron-gated 1930s-style breezeway at 427 North Canon Drive, lined with shops and filled with bistro tables and chairs over basket-weave brick flooring, was a uniquely
wistful experience. What’s more, are these two wonderful establishments found there:
Peri-A
Peri Arenas is the owner and au courant fashion curator of her eponymous boutique where she showcases distinctive looks from Thom Browne, Rodarte, Missoni, Peter Cohen, Marni, and more. Peri also has colorful Anya Hindmarch handbags, Giambattista Valli shoes, Bea Bongiasca jewelry, and more. Peri-A, 427 N Canon Drive, Suite 105, Beverly Hills, 424-303-7300, peri-a.com
E uro C affé
For a quiet, low-key coffee meet-up, try Euro Caffé. Grab an espresso and a delicious cornetto, and relax at one of the many bistro tables. At lunch, try a made-to-order sandwich or delicious panini. Euro Caffé, 427 N Canon Drive, Suite 111, Beverly Hills, 310-274-9070
Parking: Two-hour Free Public Parking lot runs between Beverly Dr. and Canon.

GENLUX GADABOUTS: PHLIPP PLEIN FASHION PRESENTATION AT CHATEAU FALCON VIEW
Under unusually misty (could it possibly rain in Southern California?) skies, German designer Philipp Plein (the self- and media-proclaimed king of bling) staged a fashion presentation of his couture-inspired collab with Jacob Meir at Chateau Falcon View (Plein’s over -over-the-top castle above Bel Air). The collection includes one-of-a-kind, heavily jewel-encrusted maximal full skirts and sculptural headwear. The presentation ended with rapper Offset pulling up in a silver Mercedes, grabbing a mic, and singing his Migo’s song, “Ric Flair Drip,” which brought the 200 guests to their feet. The Philipp Plein Atelier collection is available by appointment exclusively at Philipp Plein stores in Paris, Milan, Shanghai, and London. —SK

The Anastasia Beverly Hills brand has more Instagram followers than NARS, KKW, and Ulta combined—over 19 million. In 2018, with a valuation of over $3 billion, Anastasia Soare sold a minority stake to become an immensely wealthy woman. If for a second you thought she’d be resting comfortably on her laurels perched in her 9400-sq-ft Beverly Park residence, you’d be mistaken. As we discovered during our GENLUX Two-Word Interview, she works as diligently today as when the brand started 25 years ago.
You’re wearing: A Cucinelli vest ’cause it’s cold! Commes de Garçon striped blouse and Cucinelli sweats. I’m a big fan of Cucinelli.
Your GPS: I’m in my home office. Your breakfast? Two long espressos, two glasses of water, and some berries.
Three blessings? My family’s health. Being with my daughter. Doing what I love—so it doesn’t even feel like work.
Your childhood? I grew up in Romania, where I had a great childhood. My parents had a tailor shop where I would do my homework between sewing machines. I remember asking, Mom, why do you work so many hours? Aren’t you tired? One day she told me, ‘I love what I do. I’m excited to see these women looking beautiful and happy and they love me.’ When I started working in the salon, like déjà vu, my daughter, Claudia, would ask me the same question. You have to take a break; you don’t even take lunch, aren’t you tired? I love what I do, I told her, and I promise you one day, and you will be in the same position.
First gig? When I was 12, my dad passed away, and my mother said we needed to make a living, so you have to help to run the business. I said, Mom, I’m 12. I was afraid, but when your mother keeps telling you you’re smart and can do anything—you believe it. I learned about fabrics, how to sew, and how to make sleeves. I was good at drawing, so I would design. Fashion runs in my blood and veins. When I first came to the United States from Romania, I thought to myself, my God, you can work three jobs here? How
phenomenal! In Romania, we couldn’t even have one.
Golden ratio? My art teacher taught that changing the brows changed facial emotion. We also learned the Golden Ratio that Da Vinci used in his art—a mathematical formula in everything: Nature, architecture, and art. When I came to America, I did facial and body waxing and realized nobody paid attention to eyebrows, so I applied the Golden Ratio theory to my own brows and clients would come to the salon and say, something looks different about you. I started doing their brows without charging. After two years, I told my then-husband I was going to open my own business. He wasn’t working at the time so thought I was crazy.
Brow beginnings? I only wanted to be in Beverly Hills, so I went with a huge bouquet to the owner of the Juan Juan salon, and he rented me a room. I promoted my work at the cosmetic stands at Neimans, Saks, and I. Magnin. They noticed how much better their makeup looked once I did their client’s brows.
Business challenges? In the beginning, I was working long hours, and as a single mom, I felt guilty that I didn’t have much time to spend with my daughter, Claudia, so I started working with her.
Work ethic? Unless I’m dead, there’s no way I won’t show up to work. When it came to work, I couldn’t get sick. I remember once getting food poisoning, and I was so ill all night. My biggest fear wasn’t getting sick; it was that I had 17 appointments the next day. I took medication, felt
a little better, and went to work. I never canceled a day in my entire 33 years. Never, EVER! Easier now? No, because Claudia and I are still 100 percent involved in the business. There are so many aspects with so many people that work with us in the warehouse, distribution, IT, and logistics. It’s no longer 10 thousand pencils—it’s more like 10 million. And we sell domestically and internationally. I wish there were eight of me. It’s endless! Success barometer? I’m healthy and happy. When people ask what is my hobby. I say my work! I’m so blessed.
Fashion style? My style is classic chic with an edge. I love Yoji Yamamoto and Comme de Garçons. I like big jewelry—big earrings and brooches. I’m obsessed with Schiaparelli‘s large gold costume jewelry. Beauty secret? I use several skincare brands like Barbara Sturm, Skinceuticals, and Biologique Recherche. For makeup, I use 99 percent Anastasia because we make every product that we personally love.
Guilty pleasure? Sundays staying home and doing nothing. Having my tea and checking my Instagram.
25th Anniversary? Our party shows you how amazing women are when they are there to support you. It just happened. And many couldn’t come, like Elle MacPherson, and Naomi, who was in Africa. It was a testimony to how willing and supportive women are. I’m forever grateful to those amazing women who have supported me all these years.
Favorite getaway? My house. I’m constantly traveling, so my getaway is my home.
Biggest regret? That I didn’t have more kids. If I had five, I’d put them all to work for me.
Brow clients? Yes, I still do some. My neighbors like Hailey Beiber and Justin come to my home. They are the most gorgeous couple. Kendall Jenner, most of the Kardashians, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah, and others. Sometimes around Christmas, I go to the salon, and my clients of 20-30 years make appointments. Forget about the eyebrows; we need to catch up.
Favorite charities? I have so many. I started Anastasia Brighter Horizons. After these girls are in Foster homes, we pay for them to go to beauty school. I’ve supported and been a big part of the Blue Heron Foundation for 17 years. We sponsor kids to go to University. Seeing them grow up to become professors and doctors is so fulfilling. I always feel blessed to give to charities—it’s so important to give back.
Success advice? I could achieve all this without speaking the language—without having one penny in my pocket—anybody else could do it. They need to believe that if I could do it, so could you. We all need something to hold on to.
What’s next? I look back 25 years and look forward to another 25, and I want to have our products in every country, every village and to help other women—this is what I want in the next chapter in my life.

about her life and how, through her Misty Copeland Foundation, she’s giving young
Misty Copeland’s remarkable journey to the top of the American Ballet Theatre is nothing short of miraculous. She was raised along with her five siblings by a single mom who’d been married four times, and for a while, the family made their home in a Gardena motel. Misty’s dedication to dance propelled her to the pinnacle of the ballet world. During our GENLUX Two-Word interview, Misty shares a little about her life and how, through her Misty Copeland Foundation, she’s giving young girls who look like her the opportunity to follow in her footsteps.
Your GPS? I’m in my dressing room in my apartment on the upper west side and in the middle of a big closet cleanout. You’re wearing? High-waisted jeans by Mother and a Cotton Citizen cropped sweatshirt. Morning fare? I don’t always have breakfast food in the morning, so I had collard greens I made last night.
Skincare secret? I use CeraVe, Paula’s Choice toner, and Clinique’s light facial moisturizer. Favorite makeup? I’ve never been a big makeup person because I’ve gotten to dress up and look like a princess for 25 years of my career, going on stage and events and photowshoots, so when I’m not doing those things, I’m pretty bare-faced.
Your beginnings? One of the things I’m most grateful to my mother for is having a lot of children, so it gave me a lot of playmates. There was a lot of playing around and goofing off because we had each other. We lived at a motel in Gardena for about six months when I started ballet lessons at the Boys and Girls Club, so I used the railing outside our room as a ballet bar. I’ve always been able to make the best of any situation, and music and dance were the things that always rescued and saved me from the negative things I was going through.
Childhood bullying? I never considered it bullying, but I’m sure it was. I was a loner and very insecure, and I didn’t want to get close to people because of my situation at home. There was always something going on that I
felt ashamed of, so I kept people at bay, which made me more vulnerable and open for people to pick on me. They teased me for being really small and skinny, for having big feet, long legs, and a tiny little head—the perfect attributes for being a ballerina. They picked on me when I auditioned for the drill team, and I made captain even though I had no training or dance experience. The co-captain of the team picked on me because I didn’t come from that group of kids and was different.
Compassion chip? Oh, yes, absolutely. I’ve always felt empathy for others because I saw and went through so much as a young person. We didn’t have much, and there was a lot of verbal and physical abuse in our household. I saw my mom go through so much in her personal life. I’ve had empathy for others and what they’re going through, knowing things aren’t always as they appear on the surface.
Early influences? Mariah Carey, who’s now a good friend of mine. It’s crazy to think of it. I had the chance to meet her a handful of times, but internally I wasn’t ready or afraid of being disappointed because she was such a symbol of acceptance. As a young person who didn’t feel understood, seen, or heard, Mariah was an influential person who looked like me. It gave me such power. I feared she wouldn’t live up to my expectations, but she did and more. She came into my life at a very important time. I was newly appointed as a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater and struggled under pressure and responsibility. My manager
reached out to her people, knowing that if anyone could understand and help me, she could. She called my cell phone, and we talked for an hour. It was a beautiful conversation, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since. I’ve spent time with her and her kids. She’s an incredible woman.
Prince performance? I danced during Prince’s Welcome 2 America tour in 2010. At one point, I danced on top of a piano that was so slippery, but it was so much fun! To have that perspective of looking down at Prince singing at my feet. It’s hard to explain how incredible it was. When I first started performing with him, he let me improv— I would make up a dance to whatever he was singing. He had a very clear idea that I would dance to The Beautiful Ones, and we rehearsed for hours.
Mock proposal? When Prince got down on his knee to propose during the performance, all of that was his idea and choreographed, and we did that every show.
Met Ball? It was an interesting experience. I was in the middle of the Met season and launched my Barbie doll on the same day as the Met Gala. I’m not a big party person, nor do I need to see celebrities, so it was a bit overwhelming. I appreciated being in the presence of incredible designers and for what they do. It’s not my scene; I’m more lowkey. The Weekend performed, which was pretty epic.
Character change? Something that I’m more aware or conscious of since having my son is being able to set limits and boundaries.
gled with. Not always being able to say no, disappointing others, or putting myself first. There’s no way around it now. My son comes first, and my husband and I come second. So I have to set my boundaries.
Embarrassing moment? I’ve had a lot of falls on the stage—so maybe that. Oh, no, I know, the very first time Prince came to see me perform. What made him so amazing was he wasn’t like I need to see you perform at the Metropolitan Opera House. I was doing these performances with this small school called Updown Dance Academy in Harlem. Every Nutcracker season, I would perform and let them use my name to bring in more of an audience. We were doing this performance at the Apollo, and they didn’t have much money to cover the entire stage with the Marley floor. So the sides were exposed wood which is very slippery in pointe shoes. I was playing the Sugar Plum Fairy and running to my partner, and I slipped and fell flat on my face while Prince watched from one of the box seats on the side of the stage. He never ever once mentioned it.
Guilty pleasure? Prosecco. I love a prosecco-based cocktail with elderflower or a Kir Royale. I love pizza, French fries, and Cheese-Its.
Giving back? When I started working with my manager, Gilda, it’s always been our goal to give back to the people, places, schools, and organizations— especially those of color—that helped me get here. (cont. p93)

It’s always been important to me to use my voice and platform for different organizations in the arts and education that help make a person whole. It shouldn’t be an extracurricular activity—it should be a part of our educational system. Your foundation? The Boys and Girls Club has been a big part of my life and inspired me to start the Misty Copeland Foundation. Our signature program is the Be Bold program, which offers free ballet classes that reach the communities that need this opportunity. We wanted to dig deeper into why and how the arts could help expand their sympathy, empathy, and teamwork. What it’s like to have structure and discipline to perform on stage. We’ve created our framework with the flexibility and breathable to expand and change over time.
Foundation challenges? It’s not just about taking this historically White European art form and dropping it into the Bronx on kids that feel this has nothing to do with me and my community. Give them examples of dancers who look like them and that they can aspire to be like. To expose them to live music and instruments and what it takes to commit to something. So it’s much deeper than a ballet class. That work will be the proudest thing to come out of my career.
Playlist faves? I love Lucky Day and Sabrina Claudio, and I like a lot of old soul music like Anita Baker, Sade, and Raphael Saadiq.
Football fan? I’m not a football fan. There’s something about football that I feel I’m traumatized by. That was what my mom
was so passionate about. [Misty’s mom was a cheerleader for the Kansas City Chiefs]. My household was very loud and chaotic. Whenever football was on, there was screaming at the TV. It was too much for me to handle. I would retreat and go into the corner and create and choreograph. Next performance? Hopefully, the next time the world sees me dance will be in my first independently produced film we made during the pandemic. It’s a special dance film titled, Flower, that I’m starring in with no dialogue, showing the storytelling through dance. In the very last dance scene, I’m actually pregnant in it, which makes it very special. I’m still thinking about what my next stage appearance will be.
Next chapter? For the last 25 years of my life and career, my focus has been on me, my training, and performing, so to be able to step into these different roles as founder and president of my foundation, co-founder of my production company, and founder of Greatness Wins—an athletic wear company that I founded along with Derek Jeter, Wayne Gretzky, and Chris Riccobono. I’m excited to use the experience and perspective I gained when I developed and executed my signature line while previously signed to Under Armour to now create and launch my women’s collection under Greatness Wins, although this time as an owner and not only as an ambassador. It’s all been a dream come true!
Athlete or artist? First, I’m an artist, but there’s no getting around the fact that with ballet, you have to be a good actor and an elite athlete. G

Its blue and green colors are meaningful to me—they are the official colors of the Children’s Tumor Foundation (ctf.org). In memory of my dear brother Mehdi, I’ll always represent these colors in style. Another love of mine this season is the LDJ skirt and 3-way bandeau top! They have a wide range of eclectic motifs. God save the King!
Between clouds and raindrops, the Coronation spread plenty of joy and sunshine through the monarchy as we all sang Handel’s Zadok the Priest —with gusto! We dashed in and out of street parties as the Royal women wore white floral wreaths and 8-year-old Princess Charlotte shone out from the crowd.
I was lucky enough to have tea at my house for “Meghan and Harry,” who stirred the onlookers along the river banks. Please don’t believe all you see. It was all in good humour as photographer Alison Jackson—famous for employing doppelgängers of celebs in her images—made my day by bringing her “Truth is Dead” show into my living room. Our real Royal family, bequeathed with enough scandal to titillate the commoners, makes successful fodder for Alison’s parodies. A few weeks ago, Lady Victoria Hervey (who wore a daring Scott Henshall black sequinned number) and I attended the incredible exhibition of Bernie Taupin—the lyricist turned visual artist. He painted and collaged over photographs by the late Terry O’Neill titled, Two Sides of the ’60s. It was clever, colorful, and sometimes kitschy.
I was fortunate to be included in the marriage of opera singer Melinda Hughes. Her father, Ken Hughes, directed Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Magical Car (1968), so Melinda pulled out all the stops in finding the great car used in the film to make her grand entrance.
I cannot wait to slip into my new clothes from Schiaparelli. I also love their belts and earrings. Wear a broach, and you change a whole outfit.
As I near 62, I am getting ready for my facelift with Dr. Benjamin Pulvermacker in Paris (where the doctors love women). Hopefully, I will look ten minutes younger and send you all the beforeand-after photographs. With so much going on, I need to up my game and not look like a country bumpkin. Stay tuned. G

CANDLES WITH A CAUSE
I am pre y sure I’ve told y’all about my beautiful friend Ira Dewi and her incredibly successful candle company, Saint. You know...the one where 10% of ALL candle sales go to St. Jude Children’s Hospital to support their life-saving missions. Each candle comes with a prayer to the patron saint, holy oil, and a prayer coin is embedded in the wax so that once the candle has burned, you always have a blessed coin to keep with you.
BESIDES RAINDROPS ON ROSES...
give me a pickleball paddle and some cute clothes...and these truly are a few of my fave things! Our good family friend, Ayda Williams ( yes... the wife of legendary pop star Robbie), has started a line of pickleball clothes, Ayda Social Club, and I must say she has rocked it ou a the park! This maiden collection of greens and whites with hints of pink screams old-school varsity with a sassy, charming elegance. Congratulations, Ayda, on creating the absolute perfect pickleball playwear! shopayda.com

This absolutely gorgeous candle—filled with white floral notes with a sandalwood base—has made its way onto Oprah’s list of favorite things and into my home. The 4 Best Face Masks
A weekly facial skin mask complements your daily skincare and revitalizes the epidermis. Here are my four go-to facial skin masks to enhance your skin’s health and radiance.
Advisor & Aesthetician
EVERLASTING HYDRATION
All skin types, even oily, can become dehydrated, and our lifestyle dramatically contributes to the hydration state of our skin. This summer, protect your skin by drinking healthy liquids like lemon or coconut water and hydrating topically. During the long summer days, I reach for a mask that delivers antioxidant-rich hydration and anti-aging benefits to tone and contour. Sircuit Cosmeceuticals Cool Lychee Wa+ is an intensely hydrating mask. I promise this will be your new favorite product! Ninka B. recommends: Sircuit Cosmeceuticals cool lychee wa+ intensely hydrating mask, $90, sircuitskin.com
REDNESS RELIEF
Rosacea skin or skin prone to feeling hot and looking flushed can be problematic. The products to treat this condition need to be gentle and, at the same time, results-driven. It has been years since I discovered SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Mask , and I love it. When your skin becomes sensitive and reactive, this mask is your skin’s best friend. You can use it as an overnight treatment or indulge your skin for 15 minutes during the day. Afterward, your skin will feel balanced and soothed. Ninka B. recommends: SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Mask, $66, skinceuticals.com
SKIN DETOX
Sometimes all your skin craves is a detoxifying treatment. I enjoy dual-use products like the Skin Better Detoxifying Scrub Mask. Skin, by nature, loves to be regularly exfoliated. Exfoliation removes dullness and welcomes a radiant glow. Additionally, the clay has skin-healing properties. It removes impurities, excess oil, and pollutants absorbed by pores. Skin detox is a great way to improve your skin health and improve issues like dry, dull, or acne-prone skin. Ninka B. recommends: SkinBetter Science Detoxifying Scrub Mask, $60, skinbe er.com
can help fade dark spots by inhibiting tyrosinase. This enzyme fuels pigment and disperses melanin onto the skin. Give your skin a boost with the Natura Bissé C+C Vitamin Soufflé Mask a couple of times a week. It’s rich in antioxidants and aids in helping brighten pesky uneven pigment. Overall, your skin will have an added radiance after using it. Ninka B. recommends: Natura Bissé C+C Vitamin Soufflé Mask, $55, naturabisse.com
Thanks to a mask ritual, you will care for your skin and allow your body to relax and destress. Remember, nothing affects beauty better than a moment of relaxation. I hope you enjoy these curated products, and I will see you in the next GENLUX Issue! Best, Ninka B @ninkabskin

Zermatt Ski Resort sits under the 14,692-foot Matterhorn—the tallest mountain in the Swiss Alps that towers over Switzerland and Italy.
Magic Mountain
While the ski resort town of Zermatt has been on my best friend’s must-visit list, I’ve always been a St. Moritz kinda gal, but after experiencing this winter wonderland, I’m anxious to return. —Samia
MUST RIDE:
An easy two-hour train from Zurich (the train station is inside the airport), plus another 20-minute train ride, and you arrive in the majestic town of Zerma . The cogwheel railway takes you up nearly two miles above sea level with breathtaking views of the Ma erhorn glacier. Once there, 14 giant glaciers surround you. It’s pre y magical and so romantic!
MUST STAY:
The OMNIA Hotel in Zerma is considered one of the area’s best ski resorts. New York architect Ali Tayar (1959-2016) successfully transformed the classic mountain lodge concept into a magnificent modern Swiss Alps resort—minimalist but with warmth and coziness. The boutique property has only 30 rooms, including 12 suites. the-omnia.com

MUST CHILL:
St. Moritz has its steep ski slopes, but Zerma is St. Moritz on steroids. It’s the highest in Europe—open 365 days a year—and where Black Diamond slopes are the steepest and narrowest. Many are not for the faint of heart, like me, but fear not; groomed pistes exist for every ski level, some miles long. One of the unique a ributes of Zerma is starting in Switzerland and skiing into Italy for lunch.
MUST SKI:
Ending the day at the spa is so rewarding. Start by diving into the indoor/outdoor pool (shown above), or take a soothing dip in the whirlpool (right)—both with remarkable views of Zerma and the Ma erhorn. Follow with a 90-minute hot stone body massage, Heaven on the Ma erhorn.
MUST DINE:
The hotel restaurant has a cozy vibe, and Executive Chef Tony Rudolph’s menu celebrates the authentic taste of local alpine and seasonal quality ingredients. Try the Nut Roast, forest mushrooms with grapes, chicory, and dried fruits (Above), or the Racle e or Fondue. Naturally, we (meaning I) put on a couple of pounds. No regrets.
MUST GIVE BACK:
OMNIA’s parent company is USM Furniture. Their foundation’s culture of philanthropy focuses on promoting and supporting individuals and organizations in the fields of culture and art, architecture, design, music, sports, and education through fondationusm.org
