When I was younger and arguably impulsive, on the ‘big’ life issues (relationships, career, family and so on), I recall mostly acting according to what was in my heart, rather than logic battling to be heard in my mind. After a while I decided this was getting me into all sorts of trouble. Evidently it seemed I was messing everything up and worrying those around me who cared most for my future’s prosperity. I’d forgotten about all this until recently when, following numerous surreal events and chance meetings, I realised I was doing it again − making choices not from a rational, sensible standpoint, but instead on what I was feeling. Again, managed to get myself into all sorts of personal turmoil, or so it seemed.

I considered though, is it all for a ‘bigger’ reason? Instantly I think − sorry, ‘feel’ the answer is ‘yes’. While I can identify snippets of my life where I would have happily stayed hidden under the doona, bottle of red and boxed set of Downtown Abbey at the ready, there’s nothing I’d do differently. In fact, reflecting on all the crazy times I acted to a feeling, hunch or ‘according to my heart’, it’s all turned out the right way. The challenges or judgments that seemed so great were short-lived, in the end.

Relax this summer with a soothing 45 minute treatment that delivers triple results by targeting three key areas - the back, face and scalp.

My point is, this January, why not take a step towards that goal, need, dream, desire? What is it you want to achieve this year? Instead of being down about all the reasons why you can’t/ shouldn’t/couldn’t/won’t, or ‘logical’ grounds on which your dream will ‘never work’, lend an ear to your intuition. Pay attention to what you perhaps already know. Do it! You can, despite obstacles and fear. There’s no better time than now to start fresh and to set a positive intention. 2013 − make it a good one! Happy New Year.

RIHANNA – UNAPOLOGETIC This is Rihanna’s seventh album in as many years featuring some crazy dubstep beats alongside her usual ballads. If you can get past the fact this album is an ode to her relationship with Chris Brown, there are definitely a couple of chart worthy hits like Right Now and Jump. Featuring collaborations with Eminem, Chris Brown, Future and Mikky Ekko, the album has all the ingredients for a huge success although It’s clear Rihanna is certainly “unapologetic” for her lifestyle choices and this album is sure to make some of her most loyal fans question their support. Dirty lyrics and an unashamed plug of her wealth will certainly have listeners sitting on the fence. rihannanow.com AT THE FLICKS – 24 JANUARY

FASHIONPROFILE with Missy Robinson

THE ARTISTRY OF

i n n a l a G Missy Robinson discovers designer Lenna Vasilas’ secrets behind her exquisite couture designs for Galanni

What was the driving force behind its creation, and what does ‘Galanni’ mean? Galanni was launched in 2004. The Galanni flagship boutique opened in 2010. The driving force was to design unique creations breaking away from the traditional mainstream look and to be Australian-made. Galanni means ‘blue’ in Greek; I was born with blue eyes and was nicknamed as such. The colour tuned brown as I grew older, but the nickname stuck. Who is the Galanni wearer? Galanni wearers are strong and classy women − women who are comfortable with their femininity. What is the concept behind Galanni? The concept is a simple recipe combining couture creations exploring the woman’s silhouette with an essence of femininity, risqué and savoir faire.

embellishments jewels, sheer silks and lace.

What is the theme behind your most recent collection, The Artistry of Love? The Artistry of Love collection explores the theme of romance, showcasing an alluring array of hand-sculptured creations using

Do you have any designer icons? I keep in my own creative bubble. I don’t have a designer icon or a favourite but I do admire the journeys they have taken to build their labels.

Where do you get your inspiration? Intuition. All I need is a pair of scissors in one hand and fabric in the other and off I go! What has been your label highlights so far? Definitely X Factor winner Samantha Jade wearing Galanni at her performances, and Jessica Mauboy wearing Galanni at the ARIA Awards night. What is in store for 2013? Wherever my intuition takes me. What do you love about the Australian fashion industry? The fact the Australian fashion industry is open to new ideas and not tied down in what the rest of the world is doing. More at galanni.com.au

LOCAL PROFILE with Tiffany Breed

Michael Diamond is one of our most accomplished Aussie sports stars. He’s a proud competitor, family-man and mentor who has a particular soft spot for the Gold Coast. He recently spent time recalling his adventures with Sarah Blinco. must admit to being just a little bit starstruck by the opportunity to chat to Michael Diamond. As athletically challenged as I am, I was still right there in front of the tele cheering on our Aussie stars as they battled it out in their individual arenas during last year’s London Olympics. After all, they’d given up a lot to be there in the first place, and they are indeed, the elite. It’s amazing, and very cool! Michael Diamond was one of our local stars in the mix. Professional target shooter with over 21 years in our national team. Now that’s dedication! Checking out all his stats prior to our conversation − 8th in Athens (2004), 4th in Beijing (2008), and gold in Atlanta (1996) and Sydney (2000), not to mention a string of other accolades − I was a touch nervous calling this Olympic star. Turns out that was ridiculous, because Michael Diamond is one of those nice, charming,down-to-earth Aussie blokes. The kind who you just know would pull up a chair, order a beer and chat with you at the pub any given Sunday afternoon, about life and the lessons he’s learned throughout his extraordinary ride. London was Michael’s sixth Olympics, and while not necessarily his most successful, he still relished the opportunity to be there.“It was quite good. I was in London three months prior to the Olympics and it was cold, miserable − London! But come the Olympics we had a great time and fantastic weather for our event. The lighting was fantastic, and the atmosphere was everywhere. Really great. The Olympic Village was fantastic. It always is. There were so many new faces in the Australian teams this time around. The weather put a bit of a dampener on the events sometimes, but generally it was a great experience. You can never get used to it. I mean, it’s good to be able to get used to the events that are coming up, but every Olympics has a different feeling, and I always get nervous before competing − but I thrive on those feelings,” he says, speaking like a true champion. Six Olympics and over twenty years at the top of a game would usually mean a competitor would be considering taking a step back, but not so Michael. He’s gearing up for 2016.“Absolutely I have my sights on Rio. Fortunately our sport isn’t such that you have a small window − you can keep going on,” he enthuses as excitedly as I’m sure he has done for many years. Michael goes on to explain:“The gold at Atlanta in 1996 changed my life. From there I decided I had to chase it all a bit more seriously. My routine for some time now has been to go to gym four to five days a week. I have a personal trainer too, to keep fat levels low. All the bits and pieces on our January January 2013 2013

SHARP SHOOTER

equipment are tailor made to us individually. The dimensions of a gun are affected by your weight. I’ve got to be at fighting weight. You’ve got to remain at your best in all sports. I don’t mind staying fit though. It keeps the eyesight good and reflexes sharp. Staying fit means I’m feeling good − our sport is very mental, and being fit, feeling good − it means you feel mentally good too.” He’s one of our best shooters, and it’s obvious to me he’s reached this level not just through talent and a pretty good eye, but sacrifice and encouragement too.“I have missed out on a lot of things my friends have done. I didn’t even really start going out until I was about 21 or 22. I was dedicated to gym work and my sport. I still don’t really drink very much... I’ve sacrificed a hell of a lot, and still am sacrificing time with my family. But I’ve never looked back. I’m really lucky to be doing what I enjoy at this level. I couldn’t imagine not doing it right now.” Michael explains that his father is really to thank for this dream being discovered. “My father was doing it [shooting] when I was five. I used to tag along to the gun club with him. He bought me an air rifle, and my friends and I would practice shooting tin cans out of trees when we were little. At age eight when he said, ‘do you want to have a go at the real thing’? As a junior I was beating men in competitions. It was his foresight that kept me going. I could have pulled the pin on the sport many times during the years because there’s so many sacrifices; but I loved it because I was doing the same thing he was doing. It hit home for me in 1984 12 12

when he was watching the Olympic Games (Los Angeles). Dean Lucin won gold for Australia (weightlifting) and dad was hysterical. I realised that what I’d like to do is represent Australia at an Olympic Games. I was only 12 but made the step and started competing with Olympic discipline.” When he isn’t competing, Michael is coaching and mentoring − sharing the passion he has for his sport in what he affectionately terms, “the Michael Diamond experience”. He says, “I’ve become a lot more mature with my sport, and business-wise the lessons I’ve learnt in competition have helped me incredibly. I now have my own corporate shooting days where I instruct business clients. To see those people enjoy the experience is unreal. I make a difference to their day! It’s all very gratifying. I enjoy motivational and guest speaking too. After Atlanta this aspect of my life really grew, and I continue it to this day. I enjoy that side of things. Seeing the smiles on faces, especially the kids. I find it fulfilling to see what the kids get out of what I do and what I teach them... I teach about

discipline because you have to have discipline to continue in sport or achieve whatever they want to achieve...They definitely look up to you by the end of the day.” On the family front, Michael is evidently proud of his three little girls, aged ten, seven and one. “They’re all like their mum and dad determined, competitive... If they want to get into shooting that’s fine by me. They all love coming to the gun club. The [older] girls love tennis though, and if they’re going to continue to pursue sport at a professional level, we’d like to see them go for a high paying one,”he laughs.

As much as Michael loves his sport, he admits the sacrifices made to be on the road competing all the time are getting harder to make because he misses his family.“The kids are getting older and leaving the family gets harder and harder each time. It will be right though... It’s been a great experience so far, I hope the journey continues. We’ve got five world cups in one year [2013]. Competing at all those events means we get a world ranking... It’s a good warm up for 2016 [Rio], and I certainly wouldn’t stop there with Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games on the way! That’s going to be unreal.”

SOCIETY KILLED THE

r e g a n e te

A young reader of Get it contacted us recently with a true story on anorexia so raw and honest (not to mention well-written) we felt it was critical to share it with you. She too wanted to share her message, albeit anonymously, but we hope you’ll take heed and remember, you really are beautiful, just the way you are. – Sarah Blinco, ed

had seen t-shirts stating, ‘Society Killed The Teenager’, but before I became an anorexic I had no idea how easily that can actually happen. When I researched anorexia for school projects it made me scoff: “This isn’t a mental illness, it’s just a silly girl taking low self esteem to an unhealthy level”.I found out (the hard way) that until it happens to you, you have no idea how easy it is to turn bad days into a hospital stay. I had always been a very sensible girl but I developed my ‘woman’s body’ very early compared with my friends – by thirteen I had the full figure of an eighteen year old. While my friends (who were busy stuffing their A-cups with tissues) were envious, I was confused with why I had hips while everyone else was still ‘normal’. Going to an all-girls school also made me more aware of the differences between girls during puberty. Looking back, I should have realised I was very lucky, but back then I couldn’t see it when my parents and friends said I had a great figure. The media was also an enormous driving factor for me – every time you turn on the television or look in a magazine you see a ‘stunning girl’ – who is a size six. We were all aware of the airbrushing and retouching techniques that are done on photographic models, but does that stop a confused teenager subconsciously comparing herself to the beautiful (albeit fake) image? Sadly, no! The Christmas after I turned fifteen we took a family holiday and as one does on vacation, I January 2013

gained some weight from all the amazing food. However, when I returned home I decided I would lose the holiday weight and perhaps a bit more. I was determined I would look prettier if I was the same weight as my friends (who are mostly petite and slim as well as being a head or two shorter than me). I started exercising whilst continuing to eat healthily. I lost the holiday weight and then a little more, so I was a couple of kilograms less than my original weight. This is when it should have been enough for me and I should have been satisfied with my reflection. Somehow though, my perception became

and not even a hot shower could warm up my body. It was shutting down. I could feel myself getting more and more tired and withdrawn from my friends and family, but I kept pushing myself to do more exercise and eat less food. I refused to acknowledge that I was doing myself any harm, because now I was at a ‘healthy’ weight – everyone else just didn’t understand. I spent months walking around like a zombie, not laughing or smiling, cold to the bone all the time. My own loving parents could barely look at me because I had become so pale, drawn, huddled with cold and emaciated. After

I spent months walking around like a zombie, not laughing or smiling, cold to the bone all the time. My own loving parents could barely look at me because I had become so pale, drawn, huddled with cold and emaciated very much distorted – I actually couldn’t see I had lost the necessary weight and so just kept going. Unfortunately, I believed cutting down my food, shrinking my stomach and exercising more intensely would be the answer to my problems, and guarantee my model body. Unknowingly, I had lost all sense of logic and had no control whatsoever over my mind anymore. I would eat a strawberry for breakfast, a cracker for lunch and throw away all the food my parents thought I was consuming at school. Once I even hid my dinner in my underwear draw because I felt that the noodles would make me fat. At this point I was constantly cold 18

much discussion and a doctor’s visit, I accepted the fact that I must have an eating disorder. That was the scary thing – my desire for the ‘perfect’ body prevented any concern I should have had for my health. I began seeing a psychiatrist who strongly suggested I stop all exercise immediately and eat as much as possible to nourish my brain before I/he could even commence mental treatment. This is the scariest thing you can say to an anorexic – the very idea feels like someone putting seventeen blocks of lard on you at once. I would feel so guilty about eating anything that I kept exercising secretly in my room, and this showed when my weight

6 things you don’t know about Anorexia -via The Butterfly Foundation 1 90 per cent of 12 – 17 year old females are on a diet of some type. 2 According to the Mission Australia National Youth Survey, body image is one of the top three ranking issues of concern for 15 – 19 year olds nationally. 3 Suicide rates for anorexia is 32 times higher than the average. 4 Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness.

continued to drop. On my‘sweet’sixteenth birthday, I had a scheduled psychiatric visit. I was told by the psychiatrist that I had now lost 25 per cent of my original body weight and had to be admitted immediately into hospital. My heart (along with other organs) had shrunk to such an extent that I was a heartbeat away from a heart attack. I was totally distraught. Wasn’t I too smart/in control to for this to happen? In hospital they inserted a feeding tube down my nose and my throat and I HAD to eat hearty meals six times a day. I wasn’t allowed to go to the toilet or shower without being wheeled in a wheelchair to prevent burning calories or passing out due to muscle weakness. I was hooked up to a heart monitor 24-hours a day, as my heart had become so weak from lack of nutrition it was at risk of stopping during the night. This was the wake-up call I needed to realise I was literally killing myself with my desire to look ‘perfect’, by media standards. After two weeks in hospital I was released – two weeks early because of my determination to gain weight as fast as possible to go home. I somehow turned the determination away from losing weight to gaining weight, if it would get me out of hospital. However, I was still not recovered. Hospital stay does not and

5 Disordered eating is emerging as a norm in Australian society with 90 per cent of 12–17 year old girls and 68 per cent of 12–17 year old boys having been on a diet of some type. 6 Anorexia Nervosa is the third most common chronic disorder affecting adolescent girls with a lifetime mortality rate of up to 20 per cent, a rate higher than for any other psychiatric disorder.

cannot cure anorexia. For months after I had to stay quietly at home – no school or social life. I had to keep up the same high-calorie intake as when I was in hospital. When you put your body into starvation mode, it burns calories extremely quickly when you try to put weight back on, so any movement at all is detrimental to calorie building. Only recently have I gained enough weight to walk a little around the shops again. Medical checkups and therapy sessions are a weekly routine to try and repair the damage I have done to my body – and it only took five months! If I could turn back the clock to the beginning of the year I would tell myself daily ‘you are perfect as you are’. Eating disorders are the biggest killers of any mental illness and affect not only your body but also your mind. 19

The Butterfly Foundation offers telephone and email counselling support for those with eating disorders and their family and friends. This confidential and supportive service is available on 1800 ED HOPE (1800 33 4673) or email at support@thebutterflyfoundation.org.au You lose complete control of yourself and it has been the hardest thing I have ever had to do to try and get back control of my mind – and I still struggle on and off, every day. Seeing how it affects the people you love and who love you is too terrible. I hurt my parents and my friends because I was destroying the person they loved as she was, the girl that was already beautiful. Young girls are so impressionable, and you don’t realise just how much until it all becomes too much to handle. I truly believed I was impervious to the hype of media and society, but still I fell victim to this horrible, lifethreatening disease. I don’t wish it on my worst enemy. One thing I urge every girl to remember every day, is that they are beautiful exactly the way they are. January 2013

REAL LIFE with Sarah Blinco

TAKING

l o r t n o C

Three years ago Carolyn Broomfield’s life was out of control - she was obese, unwell and depressed. Now she spends her days inspiring women to move on from tough times, and is a popular local personal trainer. She tells Sarah Blinco what inspired her to turn her life around...

Tell us a bit about you... I had a happy childhood and was brought up in an active sporting family... I married the love of my life when I was 20 and recently celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary... The majority my married life revolved around my husband, family and children – the most important people in my life. Taking on the role of ‘wife extraordinaire’ was time consuming and at times stressful... As well as running a sometimes crazy home and helping my husband with his business, I was also running my own business, which sadly closed down in 2008. When you hit rock bottom, what happened? With the downturn in the economy and closing down my business, I was absolutely gutted. My weight kept increasing and I became very miserable. I had NO idea what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, I became depressed and bored... I hated myself and felt like a frumpy old woman. Buying nice clothes was an absolute nightmare... At size 24, feeling more depressed and lonely than ever, I then used alcohol to numb my pain. What was it that made you snap out of the low you were trapped in? I had a light bulb moment when I lost two friends to cancer. Deep down in my heart, I was fearful that if I didn’t make serious lifestyle changes, I would be facing an early grave too. In 2009 my husband bought his first Triumph America cruiser; but then I panicked and realised that I would never fit on the back of that bike at my size. I also wanted to look trim for my daughter’s wedding. One day I looked in January 2013

the mirror. I was disgusted. I fell in a heap on the floor and cried. Then I thought I’d really ‘put the nail in the coffin’ by weighing myself, something I hadn’t done in months and months. 110.7 kilograms. Here I was, approaching 52, someone who puffed and panted to climb the stairs in our home – I was at a loss where to start. My worse awakening was the drinking problem – every night of the week. I knew I could not keep doing this to my body, or to my family. How did you find inspiration and motivation to change your life? I drew my motivation from my family as I wanted to see my children grow. I started by quitting drinking during the week and saved a couple of red wines for the weekend. I also switched from white to red wine... I joined a gym and approached a personal trainer... Initially, I was totally

On the encouragement of my personal trainer, I became a Certified Personal Trainer myself in 2010. Fast forward to today, with my own private ladies studio, I continue to train with a personal trainer who keeps me accountable and pushes me to extreme limits... Along my journey, I became inspired by good nutrition, and now I am studying for a Certificate in Food Coaching, followed by the Diploma – together with Diploma in Weight Loss Consulting as an add-on to my personal training business. What are your top tips for turning your life around? Move your body every day. Set realistic and achievable goals. Hang out with positive like-minded women. Make breakfast your most important meal of the day, and cut right back on caffeine, refined

There were times when I wanted to give up, but I’d made a promise that I’d keep going. After my first month, the first of many, many more to come, I felt great. I was exhausted, but the sense of achievement was enormous. embarrassed to be so heavy and wondered if I was kidding myself to think I could lose five kilograms, let alone 30. I trained three times a week and exercised every other day – Sunday was my rest day. Not once did I miss a training session with my personal trainer; she made me accountable... There were times when I wanted to give up, but I’d made a promise that I’d keep going. After my first month, the first of many, many more to come, I felt great. sugar, alcohol and processed food. Use a smaller sized dinner plate, so portion size is not compromised. What have been the overall results of your own personal life makeover? I have reclaimed my health and happiness. I have incredible amounts of energy and increased self-confidence. I enjoy a really active lifestyle with my entire family. Physically, I am quite strong and love weight training. I dropped from an overweight size 24 to fit and healthy size

14... My husband thinks he’s got a new woman! What is your advice for other women who are currently going through what you did? Recognise and acknowledge you need help. Source a gym or private studio where you feel comfortable. Find a personal trainer or mentor who is supportive, motivating and goes that extra step to help you with your goals. Learn all you can about how to eat (and cook) clean, healthy food. Find a training buddy. Do something once a week that you enjoy, just for yourself. Are you now helping and mentoring others, if so, how may they contact you? Yes, I am helping and mentoring other women, teenagers and children, whether it be for weight loss, strength training, getting health back on track after an illness/ surgery or just simply wanting to feel good about themselves. More at nhf.net.au or find us on Facebook, NewHorizonFitness. What are you most looking forward to for 2013? Continuing to make a difference in the lives of other women... Completing my studies. Starting up series of walking/ outdoor group activities for like-minded women. Touring Tasmania on the back of our Triumph America (something I’d never thought possible at size 24) and finally, I’m open to anything that comes my way.

13 WELLBEING

ways to make

ppen it hina2013

To celebrate new beginnings, Troy Haines has devised an exclusive motivational checklist for Get it readers, to help you succeed this year ou survived the end of the world, now what? You can bounce along experiencing glimpses of happiness or you can chase the magic. Given we just beat 2012, I vote we chase the magic! The following is a no nonsense list of motivational tips/agreements for those of you brave enough to listen to your hearts and go for it. Tick to agree to act on them and give it to a friend as confirmation of your determination.

Building a core of confidence in 2013

1 2 3

Exercise. Start where you are at, but start. It is one of the best techniques we have to release tension and build confidence. Your body is a machine, fuel it with quality fuel not B-grade rubbish. What is quality fuel? Food that has captured the energy of the sun (life force), that is, vegetables, nuts, fruit, and so on. Avoid processed food. Take up Yoga and/or meditation. No longer just for monks and hippies, practicing mindfulness allows the space for inspiration and wellbeing to grow (it will change your life).

Living with purpose in 2013

Listen to your intuition. Start a practice of listening to that inner voice (your gut instinct). Ask it questions and act on the answers, for example, should I sleep with this guy? Listen to your heart (not your head).

5

Be in allowance of people’s judgements of you. It takes courage to be you, others will judge you, but when you are in allowance (not acceptance) you are free.

Analyse your need. Desire is insufficient. Compulsion is mandatory. Find a coach or someone (a friend) that can hold you accountable. We all need support from time to time.

Connect with people who already have the habit you are looking to create and spend time with them.

Rekindle a love of learning. Audio books are a great way to learn new information when you’re busy.

Failure is the way. Embrace it as an opportunity to learn. Get up and keep going!

Lastly, don’t settle (in love, in work, in life) if you haven’t found it keep looking.

Entertaining Essentialse Summer Trends For Your Hom

With home entertaining becoming increasingly popular, here are some exciting 2013 trends you may want to implement for your next fun night in recent report from IBIS estimates the Pubs, Taverns and Bars industry revenue will grow by a meagre 2.1 percent in the next year, indicating that consumers are swapping a spot at their local for the comforts of home. Whether it’s to save a bit of money or enjoy the company of friends and family in comfort, home entertaining is ‘in’. But just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you have to keep things low key. Fine Finger Food Small entrées and tapas are hot for summer. People are once again developing knowledge about cuisine, and food has become a focus of dinner discussions. With small food you can have a mix of options for guests to choose from. This can range from putting together chicken tacos with a variety of filling options for guests, to simply wrapping corn and chilli in tin foil to throw in the barbeque. The other great thing about serving smaller food is you can bring your guests into your cooking experience and enjoy the process with them − which also allows the odd sip of wine for yourself. Extending the Inside Out Another growing trend, which can really ramp up comfort levels, is to actually extend your home. Before you go seeking permits for house constructions, the trend is really about ways in which you can utilise your current space and turn your backyard into the new ‘room’ for entertaining. More lounge style pieces of furniture are being made to withstand outdoor areas, and even bringing older furniture from inside the January 2013

house out can add a touch of style to backyard entertaining − perfect for summer. You can further this ‘inside out’ trend with ambient lighting (some chic lanterns can add a touch of glam), comforting pillows and blankets (perfect for warming the space – but be sure to be mindful of weather), and proofing the space for any climate (think outdoor heating options and cooling awnings to battle the elements). Technology leads the way Technology is another great trend adding to your ability to entertain in style. Summer entertaining has always been a large part of Australian life and with new technology, outside areas are becoming more than just the traditional barbeque. New appliances are meeting the demand of outdoor entertaining. For example, ASKO’s release of Australia’s first dishwasher specifically designed for outdoor use is sparking the beginning of advancements for the ultimate cooking area, the Alfresco kitchen! The ASKO Alfresco Dishwasher is built to withstand any Australian elements, with advanced corrosion protection, insect protection seals and electronics and wiring protected from any harsh weather. Summer entertaining at home is trendy. Try some of these ideas to make your house the ultimate entertaining spot;not only will it change up your Friday night routine, you may find yourself being dubbed the neighbourhood’s new ‘host with the most’. GET CLEVER WITH I am Mark Robinson, an accredited practising dietitian with accompanying undergraduate degrees in Exercise Science and Psychology. I work as a Private Dietitian at Kudos Health Club in Bundall, as well as a Dietetic Consultant at Robina Hospital. It is with great excitement that I introduce myself to you all as a regular contributor to Getit Magazine. How many of you find yourselves walking into a supermarket with the intention of making healthy choices, only to find it’s a struggle to understand what food labels really mean? What likely follows this experience is the throwing into the trolley of the cheapest and most eye-catching choices, justified by thoughts like, ‘why do they make these things so complicated to read anyway, they cannot be very important ’. The truth is, food labels provide the key to unlocking a healthier you! Using the label to accurately distinguish between healthy, and potentially harmful, food and drink products, is like judging products not by their cover but by their true traits − that is, their macronutrient content. Here are some useful, simple tips which will make it easier for anyone to make an accurate comparison between products prior

Kudos

to purchasing. It could make all the difference to achieving your health goals this year: 1. Make your comparisons in the 100g column of all products, as this provides a standard measurement across the board. That is, the ‘serving size’ usually differs in weight per product, which can give you bias interpretations. 2. Assess the ‘total fat content’ of each product. The aim here is to choose a product that has less than 5g of fat per 100g. The fat macronutrient carries the largest contribution towards ‘total calories’ or ‘weight gain’, thus it is a good idea to prioritise this result. 3. Check the sugar content. Sugar is a subset of the carbohydrate macronutrient, and a major contributor towards various forms of diabetes, obesity, as well as infant behaviour

Analysis

disorders. Aim for less than 10g of sugar per 100g. 4. The final necessary comparison to make is that of the protein macronutrient. Aim to choose the product that has the higher protein reading, because protein functions in muscular development and immune system strength. Now it’s time to try putting these simple tips into practice. Make it a reality that your next food shop will indeed be healthier than your previous foray into the supermarket. Remember it all counts, so any improved choice you make is one that your body will thank you for. www.kudoshealthclub.com.au

MODEL

Missy Robinson chats with Kirsten Mitchell, director of Division Model Management, about life behind the scenes of a modelling agency When did Division Model Management (DMM) launch? Division was launched in 2007. It was a little idea to begin with that grew and developed due to some wonderful support and passionate people surrounding me. What is your background? My own modelling career began at the tender age of 13 and I enjoyed a long and eventful career. My journey as a model has given me a lot of life experiences and lessons that I have been able to pass on to my models. What is Division’s point of difference? For DMM, we pride ourselves on our uniqueness and that we are a boutique management agency. For Lauren (head booker) and myself, our focus is on making sure our personal relationships with our models are our priority no matter where thy are in the world. It brings us just as much joy to see them achieving their dreams and goals! What is the modelling industry like in Australia compared with Europe/USA? Culturally, each country is different in their requirements and needs of their models. The main need within the industry is always the

same no matter where you are in the world. We are all looking for models who are healthy in mind and body with a positive outlook on the industry and life. Highlights for DMM? This year has been an eventful year for DMM on an international level as well as locally. Not only have we seen some of our top girls beginning to achieve greatness in their careers internationally but locally, we have seen many of our future faces graduate Year 12 this year and have done so with remarkable effort and success. There are many exciting opportunities for the beginning of 2013 for these models also which we are incredibly excited about. What are some of the most important things you teach your models? Number 1, communication! We also aim to impress in our models the importance of being healthy and positive within themselves and their careers. In turn, this promotes proactive behaviour which can only lead to success. What do you look for in a new face? We are looking for freshness, enthusiasm and of course beautiful bone structure. 37

What is in store for 2013 and beyond? We have a great deal in store for the coming year, some expansion within our brand is coming but I am passionate about ensuring this happens as organically as possible. Most importantly is continuing to foster and develop our current models and ensuring we keep our core values of the company strong. divisionmodelmanagement.com.au January 2013

LOCAL DINING with Caroline Marquez

Broadbeach Dining Review

rom the minute you walk in, Lust’s intimate atmosphere summons a remarkable dining experience. Under new management, the welcoming and friendly staff could not be more attentive to your every need and are extremely knowledgeable on the dishes they have to offer. Our mouths watered as Kent, one of the most delightful and efficient restaurant managers on the Gold Coast, explained the Garlic King Prawns and Marinated Eye Fillet entrées we ordered. As we happily waited for our dishes, we indulged in a glass - possibly two - of Tasmania’s Cape Grim Water; the purest water in the world. It felt like I was drinking liquid air, so light and fresh - probably because the government’s own Scientific & Research organisation identifies it as containing the cleanest air on Earth! Our entrées arrived shortly after, exquisitely presented and rather large in size. The King Prawns were to die for and were served on a bed of delicious basmati rice; the Marinated Eye Fillet invigorating and succulent. The main thing I loved about my Lust experience was the short wait for orders, whether it was drinks or meals, the timing was prompt and yet allowed enough gap in between meals. I found this element to be very efficient. After a lovely chat with Kent, our mains arrived; once again the presentation was flawless. We enjoyed the delectable Chicken Aria and famous Slow Roasted Pork Belly - both meals were enchanting. The chicken breast was filled with sundried tomato and bocconcini cheese accompanied with perfectly cooked seasonal vegetables and the creamiest mushroom sauce I have ever tasted. I never believed I could fall in love with

January 2013

food until I tasted the Slow Roasted Pork Belly! Accompanied with apple puree, cabbage and sweet potato mash, words cannot describe its soft, sweet texture and flavours. It literally melts in your mouth, and every bite tempts the next. After our wonderful meals, we relaxed enjoying and appreciating the fresh ocean breeze surrounding our alfresco table. Nothing but a fantastic experience made possible by the caring, attentive and talented staff at Lust. I would definitely recommend Lust to everyone. Whether your are after a cozy and intimate date location, or want to treat yourself or friends to delicious food and beyond remarkable service, Lust, located a block away from the beautiful oceanfront at Broadbeach, is a true Gold Coast dining experience you simply can’t miss out on. BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

hink you’ve discovered the best of vegetarian cuisine on the Gold Coast? If you haven’t dined at Giri Kana Cafe yet, then think again! Just one quick glance at their Facebook site will demonstrate this place boasts true fans, and they all have a varying favourite dish. Admittedly, we think it’s difficult to choose a favourite when faced with mouth-watering options from the new menu, like cheese and spinach filos, delectable vege burgers, kofta burgers, roast pumpkin pepita salad, and basil pesto salad. Don’t even get us started on the breakfast menu: Organic Acai Berry Blend, Hash Brown Potato Cubes, Organic Bircher Delight, Tofu Scramble, and Kitchari (a healthy combination of lentils and rice loaded with vegies and flavour)! There’s no doubt vegetarian restaurants are gaining popularity in Queensland, probably because dishes on offer promise fresher, more wholesome variety than the majority of dining venues around. Options on the northern end of the Gold Coast are slim, however, Giri Kana bridges the gap, providing an oasis of contemporary goodness for us daily, if we so choose.

If you’re seeking a special treat to get you going for the day, Giri Kana offers a divine selection of Quest Organic Coffee, as well as teas and drinking chocolate (hot and cold), all made with Barambah organic milk. Fresh fruit juices and smoothies on the menu include tasty (and nutritious) options like Balasana (orange, pineapple, raspberry, ginger, mint), Tulasana (orange, banana, mango, passionfruit), Acai (acai berry, apple, banana) and Mixed Berries Smoothie (frozen mixed berries blended with soy milk). Yum! Especially popular are Giri Kana’s exquisite desserts, with Carrot Cranberry Cake, Honey Layer Cake, Banana Bread and Sweet Sago Bowl (lush tapioca pearl pudding) being among some of the regular fans’ favourites. Vegetarian and gluten free options; delicious for all discerning palates, on sale at reasonable prices. Giri Kana Cafe is open Monday to Saturday, 6.30am to 8pm and offers dine-in, take-away and even event catering. LAST WORD with Sarah Blinco

JENNIFERHAWKINS She’s one of the nation’s most beloved personalities, and 2013 is set to be even brighter for Jen Hawkins as she takes on an enviable role hosting Australia’s favourite model search challenge anyone who ‘isn’t partial’ to Jennifer Hawkins to give me a good reason why. I, like most, have always thought she was not only naturally lovely, but also an easy going, nice Aussie girl. It was quite amazing to see someone like her − a down-to-earth, albeit totally stunning entrant, win Miss Universe in 2004. In fact, she’d only just started modelling when she won the title! The first blonde winner since 1989, and the first Australian Miss Universe title-holder since Kerry Anne Wells won in 1972, Jen always seems so sweet, not fake, like many others in entertainment and fashion. Her crowning that year in Quito (Ecuador) was memorable for patriots ‘back home’, and refreshing, giving hope to the rest of us that nice girls (and guys) don’t “always finish last”. Filming begins this month for the brand new season of Australia’s Next Top Model. Chances are you’ve seen an episode or two of this show, being that it has been rated the number one series on Foxtel for the past five years! A new host was required for 2013, and unsurprisingly, Jennifer Hawkins scored the gig. Jennifer follows high-profile Aussie models come presenters Erika Heynatz, Jodhi Meares and Sarah Murdoch in the host’s chair. If the rumours are to be believed, as reported by Melissa Hoyer on news.com.au late last year, Jennifer“was up against Naomi Campbell,Nicole Trunfio, Elle Macpherson, Alyssa Sutherland and Miranda Kerr” for this coveted new on-air role. I like how Melissa’s described the reasons Jen would have come up ‘on top’ for the role: “Her mass appeal and commercial ties are her trump card. She is well liked because she is believable, approachable and non-threatening and in fashion and TV an authentic face is worth a lot.” The pretty model, hugely successful brand ambassador and businesswoman is naturally

thrilled about hosting the highly-anticipated, eighth instalment of the popular reality series. She says, “When Foxtel approached me to host Australia’s Next Top Model I was so excited. To me, this is an awesome opportunity to be part of an iconic TV show and I can’t wait for production to start.” With prominent modelling contracts and esteemed ambassador roles across some of Australia’s biggest brands, Jennifer is one of the most in-demand and popular profiles of our nation − definitely a role model to follow the footsteps of. She’s also a long-term advocate of healthy eating and exercise as the ideal option for maintaining positive body image. Among many other interviews over the years, she told Marie Claire in 2010 she understands she’s a role model to young women. She takes the job seriously, doing her utmost to impart that she’s always eaten healthily and stayed active to maintain a slim, athletic figure.“It’s a shame”, she adds,“that young girls worry about their bodies, when for so many years, later in life, you have to worry about that”. Jennifer’s also an advocate of organisations like The Butterfly Foundation (thebutterflyfoundation.org.au), which operates to support young eating disorder sufferers, adding in her Marie Claire interview, “I like what they stand for.” Foxtel Executive Director of Television, Brian Walsh, commented on her casting recently, saying, “We are thrilled to bring Australia’s Next Top Model back to Australian television screens with such a star as Jennifer. Jennifer represents everything all models aspire to be. She’s successful, popular, hard-working and has truly made her mark in this country. As our new host, she will bring her own personal experience, style and brand to the series, giving the aspiring contestants a once in a lifetime opportunity to

learn from one of the best.” As far as her own presenting experience, Jennifer has reported that she’s been watching and learning from the best in the business in recent years, honing her skills so she could be ready for the next big break. She says the show will offer new elements during 2013, and that judges are on the lookout for contestants of all body shapes, but the underlying prerequisite is that all would-be models represent and abide by a healthy lifestyle. Glamour, fashion, fabulous runway shows, photo shoots and inevitably the odd cat-fight! I’m sure you’ll join me in checking out what surprises the new series holds. Aside from this prestigious presenting role, Jennifer is also getting married this year, to long-time partner, Jake Wall. They’re certainly a cute couple, and have overcome their fair share of relationship ups-and-downs, some of which were no doubt spurred on by the lives they lead in the limelight. Either way, here’s hoping we can all have a 2013 as promising as Ms Hawkins’ is already shaping up to be. Want more? Check out jenniferhawkins.com.au and FOX8.TV
