Home Fitness Why you need a treadmill now

ave you ever considered that it would be more convenient to have a treadmill at home rather than relying on a hope that you’ll get to the gym when you’re busy, or head outside for a walk when the weather is temperamental? A treadmill on hand means you can exercise any time you like, no matter what the weather is doing or what time of day or night it is. This is an ideal option for busy mums who struggle for time to get to the gym − you can exercise even when the kids are asleep! It means no more walking outside on dangerous roads either. Time and financial savings are gained, in that you will not incur ongoing gym fees, personal training fees, and you’ll halve the time it takes to fit exercise in, because you don’t have to drive anywhere. Aside from the obvious weight loss and health benefits achieved by keeping fit, you’ll also enjoy improved sleep, less stress, better endurance, increased interest in sex, increased energy and stamina. The great news is that exercise is addictive. Once you make it part of your routine, you’ll wonder how you ever got by without it.

Running on a treadmill is still the best way to burn calories above all other exercise, and treadmills are better for your joints than running or walking on the road. Benefits of buying a treadmill from Independent Fitness We offer the whole service – delivery and installation – and we show you how to maintain your new purchase. Independent Fitness has been servicing and maintaining treadmills for almost ten years, locally and all across Australia, New Zealand and even New York and New Jersey! We offer honest advice regarding treadmills and know what we are talking about. As a local, family owned business, we appreciate service and knowledge goes much further in guaranteeing all our customers are 100 per cent satisfied. Purchasing a treadmill of the same calibre which we can offer will cost you a minimum of $1200$1500 through a retail outlet, but because you are buying direct you’ll save hundreds. Contact us today to find out how we can save you time, money and get you fit in your own home in no time.

Make them jealous!

We all make excuses about our fitness, so why not make it easy and bring it HOME! Why pay gym fees when you can have your own quality treadmill to use any time.

SARAH BLINCO

One of our lovely writers, Riana, filed a special story for this issue on an inspiring young Gold Coaster named Shannon Whit. Not too long ago, Shannon won the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE Apprentice of the Year accolade. Pretty amazing given the vast competition for this prize (and we have to say it’s quite cool Shannon beat out all the boys too). However, what makes Shannon even more extraordinary is that she is profoundly deaf. As someone who has experience with deafness in my circles, I can comment with authority on the fact that many people − perhaps even you − take hearing for granted, or consider that hearing loss is no big deal. In fact, many afflicted with hearing loss silently struggle in a world isolated from the majority. Consider the communicative tools you access every day at work, home, with the kids, at school, university, dealing with nice people, or nasty people for that matter; even in an emergency. Not being able to hear makes life that bit more complicated. In her interview, Shannon explains the effort and lengths she has gone to in order to secure her qualifications. She hasn’t taken her education and opportunities for granted and is grateful for her support network. I anticipate she is going to be one very in-demand young lady when the rest of us get hold of her business card in the future. I particularly love this quote from her − it sums up what we stand for at Get it: “I will endeavour to inspire other women in any way I can to follow their dreams, even if they seem slightly out of reach”. April’s issue is about flourishing regardless of age or situation. It is about embracing growing older (apt as it’s my birthday this month), overcoming adversity and relishing in life’s experiences. I hope you discover something to motivate you in our April issue. As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts − we’re all over social media and the web, so please do drop us a line (let me know if you’re an April baby too)! And if you know of anyone amazing like Shannon or our other impressive interviewees whose stories should be shared, you know where to find us.

Sarah x

ENTERTAINMENT with Sarah Blinco

centrestage

Gold Coaster, Jamie Lee Wilson, is about to be our next big international music success. She spares a few minutes to update Sarah Blinco on her exciting times ahead For those who aren’t familiar with your sound, how do you describe your brand of music? Big vocals, nice beats. You collaborate with some huge names in the music business – is there anyone on the horizon in particular you’re most excited to work with? My motto right now is all about working with nice people and I’ve met so many over the last 12 months. This time last year I was introduced to LA-based French producer, Joachim Garraud. He’s worked with everyone from David Guetta to Kylie Minogue, is really talented, professional and down to earth. We worked on some tracks at his studio in LA last year, one was created for his album and another competed with close to 19,000 entries from over 100 countries and is a semi-finalist [at time of print] in the International Songwriting Competition right now. I’ve also been talking to Far East Movement about collaborating on some music. I met them when I was doing a live radio performance in Amsterdam in October. Great guys, really hungry to create. Who is your biggest idol in the entertainment industry, and why? I’ve always admired Michael Jackson and Madonna for their talent and longevity. Right now I’m a bit in love with Lady Gaga.

She has worked incredibly hard, she’s so creative and is really in touch with her fans. What are you most looking forward to for the year ahead? I’m really excited about working on my own album. I’ll be in the USA for a few months this year and I’ve got some great sessions lined up there, and there are also a couple of gifted producers I’ve been working with in Australia and in Europe. I’ve spent so much time writing for other people’s projects, so I’m really excited to create something that’s mine. How exciting is it for you to score gigs in some of the most amazing places in the world (Europe, America...); do you have a favorite place you’ve performed so far, or anywhere you’re most excited to go? I’m very grateful to have seen so much of the world! From singing on floating nightclubs in Russia, pool parties in Miami and Halloween festivals in Japan… but I’d have to say one of my favorites was Ibiza. It’s a beautiful island and people go there to party! I was performing for David Guetta’s F*** Me I’m Famous night at Pacha Ibiza and it was one of the most elaborate clubs I’ve been to; incredible dancers, different themed rooms on different floors and wall to wall with shiny, happy people! I’m heading back there again this year. I’ve never performed in Brazil, I’d love to get 7

over there and catch a bit of Carnival too! What’s your mantra when faced with challenges? I’ve discovered that life is a journey, not a destination, and if something doesn’t happen the way I want it to, there is a reason for it. I look back and laugh at some of the things that seemed like such a big deal at the time. And I’ve really learned to trust myself. At the end of the day, do what motivates you, you’re the one that has to love it! Where on the GC do you hail from? I was born and bred on the Gold Coast. I love the sun and beach. I went to Marymount College where they really nurtured music, and I went on to do a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium majoring in jazz voice. I’m a fan of the Nobby Beach area, it’s really becoming a creative hub right now. What do you miss about home when you’re on the road? My family, especially mum, she’s my rock. That’s the hardest thing about being away from home. That and tap water! Keep up to date with Jamie Lee’s adventures at jamieleewilson.com, facebook.com/jamieleewilsonmusic, on Twitter @jamieleewilson_ and discover her sound at soundcloud.com/ jamieleewilson April 2014

Considering surgery abroad? Restored Beauty Getaways arrange Medical (Cosmetic, LASIK, Dental) holidays in Thailand that are safe and affordable. Information IS power, so here’s a little to get you started... edical tourism has been dubbed one of the top three biggest travel trends for the coming ten years, and Restored Beauty Getaways have been at the forefront of this industry since 2003. In fact, Restored Beauty Getaways is Australia and New Zealand’s leading Medical Tourism Agent, offering a wide range of Cosmetic, LASIK (eye surgery) and Dental Procedures at a fraction of the cost that you would be expected to pay here in Australia. Restored Beauty Getaways now almost 11 years on, with an average of 80 to 100 clients each month, will arrange and coordinate a medical holiday tailored to your personal taste, comfort levels and medical requirements. Where you say?…none other than the ‘The Land of Smiles’, Thailand. Many of these bookings are made thanks to word-of-mouth referrals and through today’s social media channels! Everything is arranged so there is absolutely no concern upon arrival or during your stay abroad. Importantly, hospitals utilised are Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited, one of the largest and most respected international accreditation schemes in the world. The surgeons you’ll encounter are all highly trained specialists in their fields, meaning you will be dealing with Reconstructive and Plastic Surgeons. In order for a surgeon to commence a partnership in a JCI accredited Hospital, they must pass a stringent process of training and experience. Critically, all surgeons aligned with any cosmetic procedures arranged by Restored Beauty Getaways are Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons, NOT cosmetic surgeons. Restored Beauty Getaways also offer a no-risk guarantee to clients that may be unsure about the quality of medical partners abroad. Even after arriving at your destination and meeting the assigned surgeon, if you are not 100 per cent confident about your decision, you may cancel your procedure at any time without any financial penalties. This means for you that there is complete sense of trust that they have your best interest at heart and you will soon find that the level and standards of care in the hospitals that Restored Beauty Getaways affiliate themselves with are nothing other than the very best. Yvonne Cosier (Queensaland State Manager and Senior Consultant for RBG) says that having experienced treatment both here in Australia, USA and Singapore and having visited numerous medical centres,

hospitals and clinics in Thailand, that these hospitals far surpass what we have to offer here.“The bedside manner, dedication to client satisfaction, comfort, facilities, acute and general care and overall politeness and disposition of the Thais are something we seem to lack here for the most part. This type of care and attention plus the additional support that your consultant provides both before, during and after allows one to feel well informed and confident in their decision”. Of course, a key reason medical tourism has become most popular is because of the price points involved. There are huge savings to be had, with procedures costing up to half the price of local services − including airfares and accommodation! Lower prices may be offered because offshore there’s great exchange rates, procedures are tax free, and labour and running costs are lower. For you this means a holiday in paradise and significant savings on dental and medical procedures; not to mention the element of privacy which can be had when travelling abroad for these procedures and treatment. For many, travelling to an unfamiliar country for cosmetic, plastic, or elective surgery may seem daunting. With Restored Beauty Getaways longevity, experience and connections to service, treatment and ground care providers that assist in the entire process, keeping you informed so you are well aware of what is to take place every step of the way from the moment of contact with us to well after you arrive home. Restored Beauty Getaways offers individual surgery packages as well as exclusive group tours eight times per year. Packages include VIP transportation to and from the airport, and include transportation to and from your hotel and to the hospital for consultations, surgery and follow up. Relaxation, Recuperation and Restoration − organising a Cosmetic, LASIK or Dental procedure through Restored Beauty Getaways is safe and stress-free.The organisation prides itself on offering clients the most reputable and highly requested surgeons, professional service and a firstclass experience where you will find the level of care stretches beyond your expectations. Don’t take our word for it though − have a look at the impressive testimonials online and Facebook to discover answers to your questions and first-hand experience of those who have travelled before you many times over. COVER FEATURE with Nathalie Chantal de Ahna

Nathalie Chantal de Ahna is a nutritionist specialising in vitamin cures, and she believes anyone can reverse the signs of ageing by providing the body with an abundance of appropriates nutrients. She shares secrets on how we can feel good and look great too − at any age! pending a fortune on expensive creams and lotions is one option to fight premature signs of ageing. But trust me, you can also achieve flawless skin, a glowing complexion, as well as firm facial contours courtesy the local grocery market and pharmacy. If you want skin to die for, all you need to do is start using vitamin cures both internally and externally on a regular basis − you’ll be turning heads in no time. I’ve been using vitamin cures for several years now and you wouldn’t believe how many women ask me about my ‘secret’ (or how many men compliment me on my skin). Here are five of my favourite ways you can achieve ‘natural’ beauty 1) Exfoliate skin with vitamin C We all know that vitamin C is really important when it comes to a strong immune system. But have you ever thought about using it on your skin? When you mix a teaspoon or two of ascorbic acid (that is, vitamin C powder) with some unsweetened almond milk until everything turns into a nice paste, you get the most amazing DIY exfoliator. Massage it into your face with a little brush, rinse once it starts to tingle and apply some rosewater afterwards. I knew a lady once who suffered from severe adult acne which no doctor, dermatologist or naturopath could get under control. She introduced this trick into her beauty regime about three to five times a week, and for the first time in years her complexion is now completely blemish-free. One side note, do not use on injured skin, as ascorbic acid burns in open wounds. 2) Send wrinkles packing with vitamin E I’m 35 and except for

my frown lines (I’m a notorious frowner, I’m afraid), I don’t have any wrinkles. I did notice some fine lines around my eyes last year, but it was nothing an effective vitamin cure couldn’t solve quickly: vitamin E. This ‘skin vitamin’ is not only an ideal scar preventative, but if you squeeze the content of one vitamin E capsule onto fine lines of your clean face before you go to bed, you’ll be as good as new when you wake up the next morning. Promise! 3) Pamper with a nourishing fatty acids face mask When we want our skin to shine it doesn’t take a genius to know that we shouldn’t put too much garbage into or onto our body. When people ask me about my diet, however, they are often surprised at how much fat I eat. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a tiny person who could easily go 14

clothes shopping in the children’s section, but I do love my healthy fats. Why? They are not only great for your waistline they also give you velvety skin by reducing inflammation, lines and wrinkles, and they even fight clogged pores. This is why I eat some nuts and a little avocado every day, and when I have some ‘me-time’, I love to whip up the following nourishing face mask: Mix a small amount of finely ground chia seeds with some organic yogurt and a splash of flaxseed oil. Stir thoroughly, apply on your face, sit back and relax for fifteen minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. Your skin will be incredibly moisturised, and if you do this before going to bed at night, you can still feel the effect the next morning. 4) Treat yourself to some zinc Although ‘zinc’ doesn’t sound particularly exciting, this powerful nutrient is a real superhero. Not only did a zinc supplement help me get rid of an awful wart

on my foot which kept coming back, the effect it has on skin is mind-blowing. Zinc promotes cell renewal, soothes skin, and is a terrific acne buster too. If you want to increase your zinc intake, buy salmon, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, garlic, chickpeas or shrimp the next time you go shopping. Don’t forget a pack of strawberries too − you can eat the nicelooking ones as a healthy snack, and puree the squishy ones into a paste. Apply the strawberry paste on your face, relax for ten minutes and your skin will start glowing. 5) Pimp your complexion with B-vitamins Lots of products on the market contain

B vitamins because they are incredibly beneficial for a flawless complexion. When you want to pimp your skin from the inside, eat mushrooms, eggs, oatmeal, nuts, salmon or legumes (some examples). You should do so daily because B-vitamins are watersoluble and get washed out if your body doesn’t use them right away. When you want to benefit from B-vitamins on the outside, try avocado oil. It does wonders for tired-looking, dry and saggy skin, or an itchy scalp. Like many women, I want skin I feel and look great in. Of course, vitamin cures don’t work wonders overnight. If you implement regularly, however, the effect can be magical.

Beauty from within The best foods for clear skin Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. Did you know that two to three cups of berries a day provide you with all the antioxidants you need to fight nasty things such as premature ageing and tired-looking skin? Not only that, berries are packed with fiber too, which keeps your bowels moving and your blood sugar low. Say goodbye to wrinkles and cravings by indulging in berry dreams daily, and if they are out of season, deep-frozen berries are incredibly tasty in smoothies. Red grapes. Have you ever heard that red wine is good for your health? Well, it’s made from red grapes! Their powerful combination of anti-oxidants and nutrients has an anti-inflammatory effect and protect your cells from free radicals. Have them as a snack inbetween meals, use in salads and if possible, eat the seeds too. Avocado. An incredible source of healthy fats and vitamin E and C, avocados will keep your skin moisturised and velvety during every season. Aim for half a pear daily and you’ll save a lot of money on body lotion. Tomatoes. Loaded with vitamin C and lycopene, tomatoes keep your skin nice and firm and naturally increase your sun tolerance level. They are also said to fight hormone-related cancers, so they definitely belong on your shopping list! Beetroot. Admittedly not everybody’s darling, beetroots are well worth a spot in your pantry. They provide an incredible amount of vitamin A, which is essential for both healthy eyes and a strong immune system. Not a fan of beetroot taste? Try ‘hiding’ in juices and smoothies. Kale and broccoli. Incredible all-rounders for overall wellbeing, kale and broccoli provide lots of different nutrients to keep your cells happy and healthy. They are among the top anti-cancer foods and should be part of your daily diet. Kale is

15

great in green smoothies and you can even increase the health benefits of broccoli by growing broccoli sprouts and sprinkling them on salads, hearty pancakes, sandwiches etc. Green tea. Rich in anti-oxidants, green tea is known to boost skin health (and fight cancer). Next time you feel like a coffee break, make some time for tea instead. Your skin will love you for it. Unsweetened oat or almond milk. Even though cow’s milk is often presented as a super drink, it’s actually not as good for you as you might think. Acne, a weakened immune system and a lot more are side effects associated with milk consumption. There’s no reason to panic though; unsweetened oat or almond milk are lactose-free alternatives which taste great and also provide lots of vitamin E. Pumpkin seeds. A great addition to salads, pumpkin seeds provide lots of vitamin E, healthy fatty acids, as well as zinc. Salmon. Rich in protein, salmon does not only help you feel full for a longer time, its fatty acids work wonders for your skin. Mackerel. Like salmon, this fatty fish is another awesome natural acne buster thanks to the inflammatory effect of the healthy fatty acids EPA and SHA. Legumes. Lentils, peas and beans are packed with protein which keeps you satisfied, protects your heart and helps you build muscles. The fiber contained is a natural digestion aid which does not only keep your belly flat, but also supports your body’s natural cleansing mechanism.

Reverse the signs of ageing;

start with your teeth!

“More and more people are discovering one of the easiest and cost-effective ways to wind back the clock is to visit the dentist,” says Smileplus dentist, Dr. Stephen Coulson. Smileplus Dental at Southport is helping patients to look and feel younger with its revolutionary tooth-whitening procedures. Dr. Coulson says whitening procedures are in greater demand than ever. “Discoloured teeth are one of the more apparent signs of ageing. Our teeth often show signs of neglect much sooner than any other part of the body, with many factors influencing their appearance, including genes. We find many patients have trouble with discoloured teeth, and whitening is one of the easiest ways to

tackle this problem.” Smileplus offers a range of whitening options from in-chair treatments to a take-home kit. “This comprehensive whitening treatment includes the renowned Zoom in-chair treatment and includes a home maintenance kit,” explains Dr. Coulson. Smileplus ensures the comfort and wellbeing of patients by making whitening a stress-free experience − relax with the scent of essential oils in the air, hot towels and even indulge in a hand massage while listening to your favourite music, as the team go about doing what they know best − taking care of your teeth. smileplus.com.au

LOCAL PROFILE with Sarah Blinco

‘Happiness and freedom’ − it’s the message Claire Louise Hay spreads to her thousands of online fans. Sarah Blinco discovers how her alternative thinking might be just the trick for anyone yearning to embrace their creative side How long have you lived on the Gold Coast for? I moved here with my partner, Jarrod, around a year ago from Byron Bay. I was in Byron for nine years and although it’s a beautiful place to live, it’s a small town not overly supportive of business growth. We were ready to be around more like-minded people. We love living here, there is so much to do. We love living on the water and the great variety of places to eat out. You’ve got a huge social media following; tell us a little about what you do and why you think so many people have responded so well? My passion is to help people to heal themselves consciously and create magnificent lives. I come from a corporate I.T. background and so when social media really started to expand I was right there amongst it, sharing my passion with whoever was interested. For all the marketing in the world, the best way to attract customers is to be yourself and share your passion, and it works brilliantly online. I already had the skills to make myself a website and it has expanded from there with a totally automated system so that my customers can access much of my work by signing up for a free class, or all of my work and access to my one-onone services by joining in my ‘Inner Circle’. Working only online allows me to better separate what can be very emotionally demanding work with the kind of great lifestyle that is needed for creative writing − the Gold Coast supports that perfectly too. How did you discover all this wonderful wisdom that you pass onto your fans and clients? I was born with a gift. I recognised early on that the people around me didn’t have my gift and so I kept it to myself for many years. I had graduated and joined the corporate world but I was miserable, making money wasn’t enough for me. I knew there must be more to life and so I went in search of it. Luckily I started meditating at that time and that’s where my answers were found, connecting back in with my gift. It took me a few more years to share it with others for fear of being an outcast, but once I had the courage to, I found people were in need of the help I could give them using it. I don’t even know what to call the gift anymore. I April 2014

EVERYONE

HAPPY used to call it being psychic, but people often think that means being able to predict the future − it doesn’t. I can hear the universe, I can ask questions − any questions about anyone or anything, and get the answers direct in my mind. I choose to use this gift to help people to heal themselves and live amazing lives because that is my passion. You’re an accomplished author too, when did you write your first book? I started writing my first book in 2010. It took me a year to write. But that was the only book that I wrote in that way, piecemeal. I would call that the hard way now. I learned a more creative way to write, to work, in fact to live life, which is by inspiration. Most people 18

think of inspiration as something that comes from outside of you, from someone else. I see it as something that comes from within, a spark of an idea that won’t leave you alone. Since that first book, all of my following six books have been written in the same way. That is, waking up in the middle of the night with an idea that won’t leave me alone. Instead of lying there writing it in my head, I get up, go to my office and begin typing it into a book template. My partner, Jarrod, who is also an author and illustrator, feeds me and gives me drinks until I’m finished. From an author perspective how do you fit ‘writing a book’ into your otherwise busy routine?

I don’t. You cannot be creative while your time is full of other things. In order to be a prolific writer, I had to stop doing everything else. I automated my business, spent time pottering around and enjoying myself, and as a result inspiration hits often. While I was ‘working’ in my business, there was little space for the inspiration to come. It was and still often is challenging to allow myself to work in this way, my business side of my brain often wants to take over again, but I know that it would ruin it all if I gave in to it. What’s been one of your most recent rewarding experiences? A customer who has been working with me for a few years, who came to me feeling like a victim of life and some tragic circumstances, turned her life around completely. She has recently given up her corporate job, started doing the work that she’s really passionate about and she’s moving to the Gold Coast from the US in the next few months. To be able to help people completely transform their lives from mundane and miserable to magical and inspired is an honour, it’s why I do what I do. What are you most looking forward to this year? I am intrigued as to how many books I will write this year, I think I’m headed for about 20 at this rate! I am busy trying to get my books into Oprah’s hands and so I’m looking forward to being interviewed by her

this year, I’m sure it will happen. What life mantra do you live by? There are no limits, you can do, have and be whatever you want, as big as you can dream it. Where on the GC are your favourite places to hang out? I spend most of my time at home, we live on the water and I love being next to and on the water. My favourite place on the Gold Coast is Marina Mirage and I can be seen there a few times a week having coffee

at First Avenue or a glass of champagne at Glass. I love Tedder Avenue. I recently had a scream on the inflatables in the Broadwater with a friend. I love love love Chocolatto, too. I think I’m drawn to all of the places where enthusiastic people are sharing their passion with others. How wonderful would the world be if we all did that? I think we could start the trend on the Gold Coast for sure, we are half way there already. Discover more about Claire’s endeavours at behealing.com

How to: simple

This hair style was inspired by one of my favourite actress’ red carpet looks − Jennifer Lawrence (before she got the chop). It’s so simple, fun and looks great any time of the day. 1 Lightly backcomb hair through the top, to give body. 2 Do the same with each side, this gives the hair some texture.

3 Taking the right side, twist hair back and secure just below the crown.

4 Repeat with the left side, securing over the top with a pin. 5 Take both sections and twist together as pictured. 6 Split the remaining hair in half, and twist all the sections together.

7 Continue right to the ends of the hair. 8 Now twist hair around into a bun shape, and secure tightly with Hair pins.

9 Gently pull out bun to give a messy textured look.

Specialised treatments for

cancer sufferers

Specialised treatment for people with health-challenged skin now available at Hope Island Medispa old Coast-based esthetician/skin care specialist, Anni Diamond, is certified in Oncology Esthetics and has expanded her practice to serve individuals with, or recovering from, cancer. The certification, earned through Oncology Esthetics training, facilitated by Touch For Cancer, prepares professional estheticians to provide safe, personalised spa treatments for individuals with health-challenged skin. Through Oncology Esthetics (COE), Anni underwent extensive training in understanding how cancer and therapy treatments affect the body at the dermal and lymphatic level. The program explores the side-effects of cancer therapies, how those are further compounded by various medications and the importance of proper sanitation to support weakened immune systems. The certification also required that Anni learn how to perform gentle, yet effective protocols using compatible skin care ingredients.

Anni, a cancer survivor herself says, “Beyond keeping my practice on the cutting-edge, this certification will allow me to safely serve a new, and very deserving, base of individuals with health-challenged skin. My goal is that through the power of the esthetic touch, I can provide a soothing escape for individuals battling cancer. Estheticians work with the largest organ on the human body – the skin. Understanding how to safely and effectively treat the skin, particularly when it is challenged by cancer, is paramount to the psychological and physical care of the client,” she explains. Anni offers the specialised treatments at Hope Island Medispa, shop 2, 331 Hope Island Road. She also offers free LED therapy to anyone with cancer, pre and post surgery to speed up wound healing and cell rejuvenation. P 5510 8999 or visit hopeislandmedispa.com

LIFECOACH

with Jennifer Granger

How to stay in sync

with your partner

Jennifer Granger discusses practical options for keeping the love alive ttraction is a wonderful force of mystery and magnetism. Everyone dreams of finding true love and intimacy that will last a lifetime. But is there a magic formula for sustaining that loving feeling over time? Well, yes! It’s not magic but it is a practical way to stay in sync with your partner and keep the fires of love burning bright. Did you know that deep inside every person in the world, male or female, straight or gay, there is an energetic core with both feminine and masculine energies; yin and yang, two essences within one body? Attraction between two people depends on polarity – which is the balance of the inner feminine or inner masculine within that person. The amount of each essence that you use determines your dominant polarity, and your dominant polarity determines what kind of intimate partner you’ll attract. The process of attraction works like a magnet – you’ll attract the opposite of what you are deep inside. To help explain this, meet Chris and Toni. This couple could be made up of two women or two men. Or Chris and Toni could be a heterosexual couple. Their orientation doesn’t really matter. In order for any two people to feel a high level of intimate attraction to each other, they must be at opposite polarities within their inner core. In this case, Chris was a ‘doer’ – loved to get things done, take the lead, and fix what needs fixing. In doing so, Chris operated more from an inner masculine essence. Chris was naturally attracted to a partner who drew more from an inner feminine essence. If Chris met another masculine-oriented person, they would not be attracted; in fact, they would repel. No chemistry there. April 2014

But when Chris met Toni, it was an instant attraction! Toni enjoyed quieter times, taking time to just think and to just be, enjoyed nurturing others, and taking yoga. When they met, Toni was accessing more inner feminine than inner masculine; thus Toni entered this relationship with a high feminine polarity. Sparks flew because Chris and Toni were polar opposites at their core. For gay or straight people, it works the same way. When attraction is high, you both love being together. But after a few years, Chris woke up one day to find the intimacy was gone;Toni felt the loss too. How could this happen when they started out so much in love? The most likely cause: one of them had a shift in polarity. It can happen subtly. In this case, Toni got a well deserved promotion and had to step up to a much more demanding job. Suddenly there was no longer time for yoga or art classes, no time for pampering or personal time, no time to do the little things at home to nurture the family. Suddenly, Toni had to access all the inner masculine that was deep inside, and Toni’s own internal polarity shifted from predominantly feminine to much more masculine. Not only did exhaustion set in,but Toni no longer felt a desire for intimacy with Chris. With Chris’ inner polarity still at a high masculine level, there was now too much masculine polarity within this couple, causing them to repel, rather than attract. It was awful. But there’s good news: they did find their way back to a strong intimate connection. For couples who get out of sync this way, they can regain intimacy by rebalancing their internal polarity, which rebalances the relationship. In this case, Toni realised that it was still possible to be strong and successful at work, as 30

long as Toni consciously accessed more inner feminine essence while at home, finding time for just being and for nurturing self and family. In regaining a feminine focus, Toni again became accepting of the comforting masculine support and protection offered by Chris, a natural role as the more masculine presence in the relationship. Chris helped the situation by stepping up and assisting with some of the family care things that Toni used to do exclusively. There was nothing wrong with Chris accessing a bit more feminine essence; it is inside everyone anyway, always at the ready. By helping out a bit more, but still staying predominantly masculine inside, Chris was able to renew the woo − and connect intimately once more with the best life partner imaginable − the fabulous Toni! The lesson here is that internal polarity is a delicate balancing act. Fortunately Chris and Toni were able to make the personal changes necessary to meet in the middle. Equilibrium returned, they got back in sync and the intimacy they both longed for was restored.

In it she addresses the sad state of affairs between couples today and explains how creating an internal shift can help individuals attract just the right intimate partner and sustain that love over time. “Forever Young” just got closer for women keen to turn heads and radiate glamour and confidence everywhere they go It is no longer good enough for skin care products to just ‘feel good’ or ‘smell good’; skin care needs to deliver real skin health results and flawless skin at any age. True ageless beauty. And don’t doubt it’s possible, because it absolutely is. ver the years, the science of skin hasn’t changed, but what has changed dramatically is the innovation and medical breakthroughs in active skin care ingredients, modalities and treatments that work to transform skin and the way the skin behaves. The days of fluffy, smell-good feel-good cosmetic products are long gone. These are the products that sit on the skin and effectively ‘rest’ on it. Expensive, luxe cosmetics that perform in this way are a little like having the hottest sports car with no petrol in it. The days of cold creams and ineffective moisturisers are definitely over. O cosmedics − available from Capella Health and Beauty − offer an extension of potent corrective serums in professional strength, high performance solution creams. O cosmedics moisturisers (and serums too) are emulsifierfree and Biomimetic, which means they have a perfect affinity with the skin and instantly work with the skin to get the job done! Wrinkle reduction Wrinkles are usually associated with ageing, which brings about multiple biological changes in the dermis and epidermis. Increased collagen fragmentation, decline in the number of dermal fibroblasts that produce collagen, and reduced dermal circulation lessen the skin’s elasticity and cause the formation of wrinkles.

A potent treatment will promote the production of collagen and elastic fibres and improve blood flow, thus restoring elasticity and revitalising the skin. The solution (MP)², brought to you by Venus Concept, is an advanced technology for non-invasive treatments with proven clinical results. This patented technology combines multi polar radio frequency (RF) with magnetic pulses that work in synergy to effectively diminish wrinkles and improve skin texture. Here’s how it works: Two mechanisms operate synergistically to reverse the biological processes responsible for wrinkles. The magnetic pulse component of (MP)² induces the release of growth factors required for the sprouting of new blood vessels, as well as for proliferation of dermal fibroblast. Concurrently, the RF component induces collagen and elastin synthesis by creating controlled damage and triggering the skin’s healing process. The result is a more vital, toned and healthy looking skin with improved elasticity and texture. Want to be rid of your wrinkles? Contact Capella Health and Beauty for a free consultation today. for the holidays

Pack the kids up

Still working out where to take the family during school holidays this year? Here’s a few of Australia’s favourite destinations that you may have forgotten about...

> Fraser Island, Queensland

Perisher, New South Wales

Five of the best places to visit during autumn and winter

and go!

If you’ve never been to Fraser, you’re missing out! This beautiful beach and rainforest oasis is only a few hours away. The kids will have endless hours of fun exploring the glorious white sandy beaches, surfing down the coloured sand dunes, casting a line with dad or taking a dip in one of the 100 fresh water lakes. > Perisher, New South Wales It’s the largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere, Perisher, and it spells days of extreme fun for all. Book in ski lessons for the kids, spend the days snow tubing, or for the seasoned professional, hit the slopes at night for the ultimate ski experience. A warm fireplace or a day spa is never far away for the ‘big kids’ either − this option is win/win. > Portsea, Victoria

Once you arrive at Victor Harbour there will be no need to get back into car until you leave. Just one hour south of Adelaide, take a horse drawn cart to Granite Island to where the tiny penguins nest. If you visit during the winter holidays you’ll catch the mesmerising whales while they nurture their babies at sea; or jump on the cockle train for a family day out along the oldest steel railed railway in Australia (dating back to 1887). April 2014

Just one hour south of Perth, this aquatic playground is jam packed with family fun. Try your luck at dolphin spotting on one of the many cruises, spend hours on the boardwalk which transforms into a performing arts centre, or win a prize and ride the ferris wheel at King Carnival, one of the oldest and most historical amusement sites in Australia (check their website for seasonal opening times). 32

REAL LIFE with Riana Horner

Riana Horner meets 23-year-old, Shannon Whit, the first female to win the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE (GCIT) Apprentice of the Year as a plumbing apprentice, despite being profoundly deaf. Her hopes are to encourage other women out there that ‘we can do it’ Congratulations on all of your success. Was plumbing something you have always wanted to do? My parents are associated with the construction industry. My mother works as a WPHS officer and my step-father works as a construction supervisor. I saw first-hand building development take place when I was growing up as my parents built their own house. I was brought up on 190 acres and my dad put a lot of time and effort into helping me do practical, hands-on things. This experience, along with my own personal efforts in trying work in other industries including administration and child care, helped me decide on plumbing as my career path. I chose plumbing because at the time it was very uncommon for women to work in this field. I wanted to be a role model and give out the attitude ‘if I can do it, you can do it’.. Was it a difficult course for you to get into? The course at TAFE is part of my apprenticeship. I was successful in gaining an apprentice with Building Asset and Services (BAS), and then I had to attend GCIT part time for three years. What is the biggest challenge you’ve encountered throughout the course so far? The teachers and classmates treated me equally with respect, although being in a male dominated industry made the physical part challenging with my job out on field. I’ve since become a very active and healthy person, to be able to carry out the same amount of physical work as the males. One-on-one I am fairly confident in my ability to lip read, however in class I have an interpreter with me to ensure I don’t misunderstand and don’t hold others back from progressing or achieving the target. Being deaf, I believe I have put in more effort and attention to my work to be able to bring out great results in class. How did you overcome any barriers you had during your time as an apprentice? I make sure that when I meet new people I explain my deafness and that I am not by any means less capable, but that obviously there are certain things I will need help with. I am also more than willing to help others where I can. I find teamwork much easier now as my colleagues have learnt to tap me on the shoulder or get my attention if they need my help. I am very satisfied that my teammates know I am approachable and won’t let my hearing disability negatively impact my work or my team’s work.

breaking down

the barriers

Who were your mentors and how did they help to motivate you? My teachers have shown such patience and strength in their ability to work with me through our language and communication barrier. I pushed through the hard times wanting to honour the hard work they have put in. My family have also helped me every step of the way and have been unbelievably supportive of my dreams. In return, that gives me the motivation I need. How did it feel to become the first female to accept the award? Being the first female to accept this award is definitely a highlight for me and a feeling which I will not forget. I feel very overwhelmed by the kindness my teachers and peers have shown me and for their support in my nomination. My teachers are very proud of me and the effort I put into my work. They gave me such encouragement and support in the classroom. What do you consider to be your 41

greatest accomplishment during your time as an apprentice? I feel that my achievement in becoming a plumber apprentice as not only a woman, but a deaf woman, proves to others whether they are disadvantaged or not, that the construction industry is welcoming and a great place to grow and gain confidence as a woman. I will endeavour to inspire other women in any way I can to follow their dreams, even if they seem slightly out of reach. What are your hopes for coming years? My most immediate career goal is obviously to complete my apprenticeship successfully and secure full-time employment as a qualified tradesperson. Perhaps one day I’ll become a supervisor or a plumbing inspector. What advice would you give to someone who wanted to follow your in your path? Just do it, whatever barriers you face, you CAN push through it and achieve your dreams. April 2014

TANDOORI GRILLED CHICKEN THIGH

& salad

(Serves one at $5.75 per serve )

INGREDIENTS • 150g of chicken thigh fillet • 1 tbsp. of ghee • ½ tbsp. of tandoori spice mix • 1 ramekin of cultured yoghurt (optional) • 1 tbsp. of fermented vegetable – (recipe found in Jo’s book) • Mixed salad Spicy Tandoori Mix (Makes 3 ½ tbsp): Ingredients: 2 tsp. of red chilli powder 1 tbsp. of paprika 2 tbsp. of garam masala Jo’s tip: If making your own tandoori mix seems too time consuming or overwhelming, Pure Food Essentials and Gourmet Organic both do an organic tandoori spice mix.

April 2014

Let’s start cooking Thinly slice the chicken breasts (about 3-4 pieces per breast). Use a meat tenderiser to lightly hammer each piece thin. Marinate the chicken: place in a bowl with eggs, scotch and garlic whisked together. Place the marinating chicken in the refrigerator for 1 hour. Place breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese and chicken stock in a bowl and combine. Remove a piece of chicken from the egg mixture and place in the breadcrumbs, thoroughly coating the chicken. Transfer to a plate and continue until all pieces of chicken are crumbed. Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Once the pan comes to temperature (breadcrumbs will bubble when dropped in), place chicken pieces in the pan. Cook on one side until golden brown, then turn and repeat. Once cooked, transfer chicken to a plate covered in paper towel. Repeat until all pieces of chicken are cooked. This dish is best served warm and golden and crunchy.

POACHED COCONUT CHICKEN

with a tropical salsa (Serves four @ $7.25 per serve )

INGREDIENTS • 4 x 150g of chicken thigh • 200ml of coconut milk • Juice and zest of 1 lemon and 1 orange 2 star anise. Salsa • 2 mangos or ½ pineapple (cubed) • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 avocado (cubed) • 1 cup of bean sprouts • 1 red onion (chopped) • 1 red chilli (chopped) • 1 handful of chopped coriander. METHOD Marinate chicken in coconut, star anise and citrus up to two hours. Poach on medium heat for approximately 10-12 minutes in oven or covered in a sauté pan on the stovetop. Reduce marinade to half and blitz in blender to get sauce smooth (optional).

LAMB MOUSSAKA

For salsa, combine all ingredients and serve on the side or on top of chicken. Serve with your choice of salad; Jo likes herbed quinoa salad with this dish.

with salad

(Serves four @ $5.65 per serve )

INGREDIENTS • 1 large eggplant • 500g of organic lamb mince • ½ cup of melted ghee • 1 tsp. of chopped garlic • 1 large brown onion (diced) • 1 cup of chicken broth • 4 fresh tomatoes (diced) • 3 tbsp. of tomato puree • ¼ tsp. of pepper • ½ tsp. of Rosemary • ½ tsp. of basil • 1 tsp. of parsley • 8 ounces of quark cheese • 1 egg • 2 tbsp. of raw parmesan cheese • Pinch of salt. Jo’s tip: This dish tastes even better the next day so make sure you make enough for leftovers! Method: Preparing your egg plant: Slice the eggplant ¼ inch thick. Sprinkle evenly with salt. Transfer to a colander over a plate and set aside for 30 minutes to drain. This draws out the bitter juices. Place the colander over a large bowl or in a sink. Carefully rinse each piece of eggplant under cold water, making sure you remove all the salt. Drain. 43

REAL LIFE with Susan Butler

Would it have happened

to a man?

Susan Butler shares a few home truths about life as a woman in a man’s world but wishes to encourage all of us to continue to move forward, paving a way towards a gender neutral society where our daughters will flourish n June 2010 I bought a copy of the newspaper to keep and show to my little two year old daughter one day. We had a new Prime Minister and she was a woman. I didn’t save a copy because I thought that I may have to reinforce to her that women can do anything − that is a given. I wanted to show her an example of how the world is truly changing. Women are now accepted more than ever; taken seriously and respected in quests for roles of real ‘power’, roles that previously have been occupied predominantly by men.I thought that this event should serve as proof and inspiration to her one day when striving to achieve something in her own career, hoping such evidence by then would not be required, but secretly knowing it probably will be. In June 2013, only three years later I felt that the cause for women had been taken down a small notch, not because of Julia Gillard’s policies, leadership style or overall political performance, but because of the way that she was unceremoniously brought down by her own party members largely based on her poor public perception and lack of performance in

April 2014

opinion polls. I wouldn’t say I was a passionate advocate of Julia Gillard while she was PM, although I will say I respected her and never bought into negative talk about her as a person. But on the night of the ballot and the following day as I watched an understandably sad exPrime Minister listening to a colleague’s farewell speech, stating that her recently deceased father “would have been proud”,I unexpectedly found myself angry, and deflated. I am not saying that everything that happened to her was a result of sexism and the fact she was female, but when I reflect upon her leadership and consider the cruel taunts and other things levelled her way, none of this would have happened to a man. It got me thinking about my own career and specifically the treatment from some men that I have had to endure over time. Although we have come to a place in time where it is now completely normal to visit a female doctor, deal with a female real estate agent, see women occupying senior executive positions, have a female Governor General, female State Premiers and even a female Prime Minister, many (if not 48

all) of these women would tell you the path to obtaining these roles and the obstacles they have faced were far from ‘normal’. It would appear as women, although we have more than demonstrated our abilities, in order to survive psychologically we need to have yet another skill – the ability to develop thick skin in business. We all, men and women alike, go to work each day and for the most part, make decisions based on what‘s right for our respective organisations in our professional capacity. But as demonstrated during Gillard’s reign, when we do things that people don’t like, it’s ok to call a woman a witch, liar, mercilessly criticise the colour and style of her hair, negatively critique her fashion sense and even make disgusting comments about her figure. Whenever she objects or is perceived to be fighting back, she is accused of being ‘overly sensitive’. I’ve reflected on my own experiences that in the past I have simply ‘taken on the chin’. I was offended when two of my former disgruntled employees took to Facebook and started a fake page in my name with a photo of a Barbie Doll

in a Wonder Woman suit and, among other posts, ridiculed my single-mother status, even mentioning my four year old daughter’s name. I was called a mole, a ‘Kenless’ Barbie Doll and other personal attacks that were nothing short of disgraceful. Not only was it offensive, it was audacious that these men who had achieved nothing particularly noteworthy in their own careers, had attempted to cast a bad light on my professional reputation, one that I have worked extremely hard for years to build. I was offended when at a conference several years ago attended by at least 100 men and only three women, the male speaker decided to give us the rather useful advice that unless our consultants had exceptional product knowledge, we may as well “employ a whole lot of blondes with large breasts” to sell the cars. At this point, every person in the room turned to me for a reaction given that the other two ladies were brunettes! I am annoyed every time a journalist, fellow dinner party guest or someone I meet at a function feels the need to address my gender and ask me, “What’s it like being a woman in the car industry?” What I really want to say is, “Well it’s just the same as being a man in the car industry except I have to answer pointless questions like this”. Or my absolute favourite comment after telling somebody that I work in the motor trade − “Oh yes I’ll bet you do very well, I could imagine you would sell lots of cars”. When I ask why they would say that, the answer is never, “Because you have a friendly persona, you seem to know a lot about cars or you have worked hard all of your career so you must be good by now,” the answer is always simply, “Well, you’re a woman”. This of course is somehow meant as praise, but it is actually the most patronising back handed ‘compliment’ you could give to someone who takes her profession seriously. But it’s not all bad. I really believe that men who label women, attempt to humiliate them

and discredit them in business in subtle and overt ways are somewhat of an anachronism. They are almost a stereotype, a caricature of themselves and most people these days do not approve of their bullying behaviour. In fact, when the ‘blonde faux pas’ at the conference was made, it was the males in the audience who were the most outraged. I lost count of the number of men who approached me afterwards and expressed their disapproval of this inappropriate comment. Likewise, my ‘Facebook page’ had exactly the opposite intended effect – far from publically humiliating me, what it actually did was highlight to many of my male colleagues the challenges a woman can sometimes face in business, particularly when in a position of responsibility. Most of them agree that other males in the industry would never be put through the same heartache. What was particularly cruel in this instance was that this occurred during my daughter’s first week in school – as any parent would tell you, single or otherwise, this is an incredibly emotional and stressful time anyway. Not too long ago I attended a luncheon where Ita Buttrose spoke to an all-female audience about her experience working in the newspaper world during an era where this was truly a male-only domain. She said of the taunts, insults and disrespect levelled her way, “If you want to play in the jungle you have to be prepared for what it will throw at you”. When I started my career, I was told many times that a long career in the motor trade was not really ideal for a woman. I have also been told so many times that women have to work so much harder than men just to be taken seriously. It is all complete nonsense. The only reason I have enjoyed any success at all in my career is purely because I have worked hard and any job I have been given has been as a result of my credentials. If you can do a job and have the

track record to prove it, why wouldn’t you get it? I think the message to young women should be, if you start thinking about your gender and the fact you may be overlooked for certain roles, or degraded some way in the work place for being female, then you will never get anywhere. Never let the jealousy and envy of the ‘haters’ and the ‘knockers’ get in the way of your goals and what you are trying to achieve in life – this goes for both women and men. It is not all men who hold a negative view of women, and thankfully misogynists are a dying breed. Despite feeling understandably deflated after her unceremonious dumping from the Labour Party leadership, I have no doubt that Julia Gillard has been “moving forward”.And we should too. We are paving the way for a truly gender neutral society. We probably won’t see it in our lifetime, but I believe we are heading in the right direction.

Everyday sexism

British writer, Laura Bates, founded The Everyday Sexism Project online (everydaysexism.com) not too long ago. It is a website that allows women from all over the globe to share their experiences of sexism. She didn’t anticipate that only a year after it had launched it would receive up to 1000 submissions a day, documenting everything from sexist fast-food advertisements to genderbased harassment and assault. She told Marie Claire recently, “For too long, I felt that women had been told to stop overreacting, learn to take a compliment and stop making a fuss when they complained about the small, normalised instances of sexism that we all put up with and face daily”.

LAST WORD with Riana Horner

Serotonin will make your heart sing hen Griffith University’s senior prosthetics demonstrator, Steve Griffin, noticed a strong shared talent of singers throughout the medicine and dentistry faculty, the dream to start up a student choir became an alluring idea. Noticing that these students were neglecting the musical side of their lives and studying in isolation, the university decided to support the concept and advertised a student modern a cappella choir, open to male and female Griffith students under 30. The incredible response they received from both students and staff from all different faculties was overwhelming but unsurprising, and so ‘Serotonin’ the choir was born. Steve, and his renowned, well established choir, The Blenders, have achieved no less than the title of Australian Chorus Champions eight times, and are known for their accomplishments in The X Factor, The Battle of the Choirs and Australia’s Got Talent. With his strong interest in singing, and the blessing of the university’s support, Steve was able to facilitate an alliance between his choir, The Blenders, and Serotonin. Providing the musical leadership April 2014

and learning material for the young choir, Steve tells me, “Because of the turnover with students, The Blenders provide the stability if people cannot make it”. Rehearsing every Tuesday night at the campus, the group soon developed the skills to sing complex close harmony a cappella work. Excited to be achieving great success so soon, Serotonin recently joined The Blenders for their first concert in the festival, Voices in Paradise. Steve proudly says, “It was a massive sell out with people in the isles, and they received incredible reception. It’s inspired them to really grow and to do more performances”. Since then, the choir have gone on to show off their talents at conference openings and for university fundraising. Johnno Albertini, the gifted 24-year-old musical director from The Blenders, now directs Serotonin too. “He has the ability to bring music to life and to teach them all the intricacies of a cappella signing in close harmony,” Steve explains. Along with Johnno, Deke Sharon, arranger of the well-known movie Pitch Perfect, is the official arranger for Serotonin. “It won’t be

50

long before we are introducing nine and 12 part arrangements, which will produce unique sounds, and that’s going to be pretty special,” Steve enthuses. As well as the students expressing themselves through musical art, Steve believes singing is good for your health. Promoting relaxation with breathing exercises, Serotonin exposes the students to music therapy. “There are designed programs in which therapists actually use music to help you achieve if you are struggling with your studies. It seems to be becoming a growing area of education and this is ideal for Griffith, we are hoping that the choir will become the centre for music and health faculties.” With high hopes for the future, and a demand for the choir to open up to staff, Griffith plan to develop a brand new choir for all ages, so a wider variety of people can join in the fun. “I expect we will have quite a considerable turn out, as we had a nice response from staff saying that they want to join,” Steve proudly tells me. “They aren’t scared to embrace this kind of thing, it really is a special art.”
