GET IT I PUBLISHER'S LETTER
EASTER FAMILY FUN DAY
from the publisher LEANNE HART
Elegance and taste are two things that have fallen a little by the wayside and this issue we’re bringing them back. I personally believe having a bit of elegance isn’t really that hard. A colour scheme for your lounge room will make it look more expensive and luxurious — and even disguise the fact that it was all Kmart bargains. Good (and cheap) staple pieces mixed with one less cheap and timeless piece makes for a great outfit, and dressing well leads to success. Here’s a little secret for you: if you want to look like you have your act together, put on some make-up. The just-rolled-out-ofbed-where-the-heck-is-my-coffee look isn’t going to do you or the professional vibe you want to exude any favours. But also, go easy on the make-up, save the heavier stuff for a more appropriate occasion (and hour of the day). Another area that some people forget to add a little elegance to is dealing with others. Tact goes a long way, and sometimes the more ‘expressive’ thoughts are better left unsaid. Of course, when conflict or confrontation arises, you should always speak up, but be the one to deescalate the issue, you’ll look a hell of a lot more mature for it. And speaking of mature, I think some of us need a reality check with April and the month of Easter. Chocolate, hot cross buns and festive food, it’s about time we just embrace it and don’t fear it. Enjoy the time with your family, eat as much food as you feel like, and don’t feel guilty. An extra chocolate or two isn’t going to make a difference, and if you really think it will, run an extra 15 minutes the following day. Pretty simple stuff here. It isn’t rocket science. Whether you’re hiding chocolates around the backyard while the little ones run around with coloured baskets, or perhaps the kids are out of the nest and you’re having chocolate-flavoured cocktails with the girls… or maybe you’ll just buy a bag of halfprice chocolates after Easter weekend and enjoy them on the couch with a glass or three of wine… we’re not going to judge! Have your damn chocolate and eat it too chicks. Happy Easter from the whole Get it team.

Timeless elegance As we are exploring all things elegance, I have decided to take a trip down memory lane to see what the early 20th century had to say about keepin’ it classy. Needless to say it was a terrible experience that I would not recommend.

hey say we should learn from the wisdom of the past, and while I’m sure the past has some great pearls of knowledge, unfortunately none of them are on this list…
TIP #1
DONNA SULLIVAN
ALWAYS WEAR PINK UNDIES.
Available Monday to Friday mornings
How does this help me in anyway? How can anyone sustain exclusively wearing pink underwear? It’s just not feasible. I mean, how many outfits do you know of that would benefit from a bright pink bra strap? The answer is not enough to justify this atrocious piece of advice. I’ll stick to my black and nude staples, thanks.

CUT YOUR SALAD WITH A FORK.
A direct quote: “Try first to cut your salad with your fork. If you find it difficult, calmly pick up your knife and use it.” Oh, I’ll calmly pick up the knife and use it all right. Why do these tips always find the most difficult way for people to do the simplest tasks? Why can’t I just use the knife? Why am I so flustered? Why am I even cutting my salad in the first place? These tips really do raise more questions than they answer. It’s impressive enough that I’m eating a salad at all — so please just let me shovel it into my face like a foraging elephant while pretending it tastes as good as those churros I had last night.
TIP #3
BRUSH YOUR HAIR. 100 TIMES.
Yep. Want silky smooth hair? All you have to do it brush it with precisely 100 strokes — seems reasonable. Maybe I’m wrong here, but I personally feel like I deserve a gold star for managing to properly wash my face and moisturise every day, never mind counting the brush strokes I use when hacking into my tresses. For the record, I think I usually manage about six strokes before my arm gets tired and I lose the will to live. Do you want to know the worst part about this article? While I sit here and scoff at the bizarre advice of yesteryear there are people on the Internet recommending you apply foundation with a chicken cutlet. It’s a thing. Look it up. You will be disappointed. 9

Cut up your
credit cards Paying at a later date has a new kingpin
redit cards are so 2016. As are surcharges. While the government has regulated surcharges to 1-3% of your purchase for an in-store or online payment, they still exist. But there are more ways to take home an item now and pay later. Introducing Afterpay. You are out shopping for the perfect dress to wear to an event on the weekend. You’re strolling around Carla Zampatti and see the dress. That’s it. You take it to the change room and try it on and it fits perfectly. Yes, this is the dress. Excitedly, you take it off and casually glance down at the price tag as you walk towards the register. $799. Hmm, a little more than you were wanting to spend. However, you recently signed up with Afterpay and could take this dress home today for no cost and pay $199.75 a fortnight for the next four weeks. That sounds better!
Afterpay offers interestfree payment plans so the amount you agree to pay is the amount you actually pay. The dollar figure does not rise.
THE PROS
THE CONS
It makes items accessible to more people, particularly younger women. The dress that was previously out of reach financially becomes within reach as you pay it off.
Afterpay thrives off the fact that we want things right now, not later. The younger generation in particular need everything in an instant and the actual cost of an item may become an afterthought.
Approval is instant and secure. Afterpay is significantly easier and faster than applying for a credit card. There are terms but almost anyone over 18 would pass them. No credit checks either.
New Afterpay customers are required to pay the first 25% immediately, according to their Ts ad Cs. They state:“Once you have been using Afterpay for some time, we may not always ask for your first payment upfront.”
No surcharges or interest. Afterpay offers interest-free payment plans so the amount you agree to pay is the amount you actually pay. The dollar figure does not rise.
If your payment bounces, you are liable to pay late fees to Afterpay ($10 penalty fee in the first week and $7 the following one). You will also not be able to make another purchase if you have overdue payments.
You can link your Afterpay plan to any account or card (credit or debit), giving you the freedom to choose which bests suits your situation.
Linking to your credit card could find you in serious strife. Particularly if you do not have the money to pay off your credit card in the interest-free period.
Our top tips for smart shopping with Afterpay: Afterpay is a method of paying for items online and instore where the buyer can take the dress home now and pay later – so to speak. It uses your nominated payment source (account or card) to withdraw money (usually four fortnightly instalments), so you pay it off as you go rather than paying the initial sum of money all at once. More and more stores are offering Afterpay to their customers with 1311 listed on their website at the time of writing (March 2017). However, what are the perks and catches of this take now, pay later solution? April 2017
l
l
Ensure there is always enough money in your nominated payment source when the payments are due to avoid late fees. If using Afterpay, link it to a debit card or account. Only use a credit card if you know you’ll be able to pay it off within the allocated time.
From Lay-Buy to credit cards, there will always be options available if we can’t afford an item in any given moment, and Afterpay is certainly one of them. We’ll leave you to make up your own mind about it but be smart and sensible if 10

Afterpay is not the best place for young women to learn money sense so encourage them to save up for a few weeks instead. Saving is a necessary life skill! If you have previous credit card debt skyrocketing, don’t use Afterpay. Get your finances in check and save yourself an additional headache.
you do choose to use it. Also, maybe hold off on cutting up your credit cards just yet, unless, you know, you’re vowing to go all old school and only spend the money you actually have. In this case, power to you girlfriend!

Brand spanking new, MR BENGEL offers a very relaxed and approachable vibe Location: 1099 Gold Coast Highway, Palm Beach Perfect for: Breakfast, brunch or lunch (open 7 days a week from 6am until 2pm) It’s Sunday morning and you’re catching up with your sister for breakfast. You both wear your active wear, knowing full well no workouts are actually happening today. After being seated you browse the menu. You order coffees first, because let’s be real, neither of you have actually said more than two words yet due to lack of caffeine. Your flat white and your sister’s latte arrive and with some lifesaving caffeine in you, you chat about the week and the kids and work. For breakfast you order Bengel’s eggs benny with James St deli ham and spinach on English muffins with mushrooms and a green smoothie, in the hopes the kale, banana, spinach, mango, parsley and coconut water balance out the bottle of wine you polished off last night. Your sister orders the buckwheat banana pancakes with coconut yoghurt, berry compote and maple syrup, and gets a heart beet tonic cold pressed juice. After reading the ingredients of her drink — beetroot, green apple, carrot and parsley — you realise she too is probably trying to balance out some alcohol consumption last night. You talk life and the stresses that led you to the wine, and then giggle your way through the meals about how your partners recently tried to fix things around the house rather than paying for a tradie but made them so much worse. The food is eaten and the stupidly healthy drinks are drunk. “Same time next week?” you ask as you part ways, off to anywhere but the gym in your active wear.

You get seated by the water and cheers to the last eight years with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc — the 2015 Petaluma from Adelaide Hills for your man and the 2014 Throne from Marlborough for yourself. You look out over the water as you discuss life, your work and what the coming month brings. The pork belly sliders with plum sauce, aioli, rocket, brioche bun and fries arrive and you two make quick work of them. Although you want to talk to your partner about the fact that you want kids now, in the past the two of you had always thought you were that couple that never really wanted kids. Now may not be the best time, and the mains have just arrived. You got the sous vide lemon thyme chicken breast with zucchini, Persian fetta, orange, fresh herb salad and pomegranate molasses and he got the slow cooked lamb rump with balela salad, mint pistou and port reduction. You eat rather quietly as the thought of kids pops into your mind again, and you can’t help but notice he is rather quiet too. The lamb does look good so perhaps he’s just really enjoying it. After some light chitchat you decide to split a dessert. Two bites into the deconstructed banoffee pie with caramel, banana, whipped cream, fresh strawberries and vanilla ice-cream you can’t hold your tongue anymore on the kids idea. Just as you open your mouth to speak he blurts out I want to have kids. You look at him, smile so big and he knows you feel the same. The two of you eat the last few bites of dessert then leave quick smart. You’re not sure whether it was the wine, delicious food or view, but you’re both in the mood. Perfect for: Breakfast, lunch and coffee (open Monday to Saturday 7am to 3pm; Sunday 7am to 2pm) There’s not many more people you love more than your mum and that’s as good of a reason as any to take her out for lunch — and you have some important news to tell her. You’re just after a relaxed and lazy afternoon, so you head into French Lantern Café. They’re currently running a special so the two of you take advantage of it and order two Lemon and Herb Barramundi meals with French fries and salad. While you wait for your meals you hear about her and your Dad’s recent trip to Sydney — how it’s so much noisier and busier down there and she’s glad they live up here. As you dig into the Barramundi you tell her how your business is going and speak warmly of your partner. The relationship is going so well in fact, that the two of you are now engaged. Once the plates clear it seems like the right opportunity to tell her. And she is ecstatic, you knew she would be. Lunch is certainly not over now so the two of you split waffles with berries and ice cream and your mum gets a pot of Blood Orange Black tea while you get a Chai Latte. Between sips and bites you tell her about his romantic proposal on the Cairns getaway the two of you just had, and discuss details of the engagement party. She wants to hear all about the wedding plans and she will, in due time, but now the drinks and waffles are finished the two of you part ways. You’re already expecting a call from her in 30 minutes with some of her wedding ideas. 15

Going short
Bobs and pixie cuts are making a huge statement in the hairstyling world with so many variations to suit the individual’s face shape. It’s a perfect time of year for their rise in popularity because as the months get cooler, long hair can become dry and damaged. Short hair expert and popular hairdresser Donna Sullivan believes short hair isn’t just for the beginning of summer when you’re tired of that hair on the back of your neck, it’s also a great choice for the cooler months too. “A short haircut can give you a low maintenance, fresh and healthy look that will have you feeling confident and chic,” says Donna. As an award-winning hair stylist with more than 20 years of experience, Donna sees many clients in the cooler months who are exhausted by the amount of time they spend treating and managing their hair. They come in fed up and just want it all off. “A bold new hairstyle is the perfect option for those wanting a revamp or refresh,” Donna says. “When you’re fed up with your long hair, just make the change to short hair
April 2017
— you’ll be so glad you did!” However, when making the change, keep in mind that short looks are significantly harder to pull off than longer looks, so it is vital you go to an experienced short hair stylist. “Short hairstyles take much more expertise so really ensure the stylist you see has the experience and training to carry off the look you are after,” she says. Once your hair is off, there’s no going back! Another important point to consider when going short is your current colour. Just because the colour works in a long cut, doesn’t mean it will in a short. It’s best to be open to a new colour if you really want to pull off the shorter style.“Different tones in hair colour can complement a short haircut and emphasise detail,” Donna says.“An experienced hairdresser will be able to offer guidance on what colours and tones will work best for you.” With 75 state and national awards and based in Robina, Donna loves helping others look their best with her creative flare. She specialises in all areas of hairdressing with her passion being short hair cutting. Her clients love how she transforms their hair and the number of glowing testimonials reflect her skill and expertise.“Donna is truly an artist and creative genius when it comes to hair

especially cutting short hair! Since she has been my hairdresser I have lost count of how many people compliment my hair and say ‘I love your haircut!’” says client Lisa. To make a booking contact Donna Sullivan on 0422400932 donnasullivan.com.au

GET IT I MAKE UP
Make-up artist and trend spotter Amanda Higl reveals the statement looks set to soar in the coming months ew York Fashion Week has been great to spy on what is to come for our Autumn/Winter 2017. As per usual there are a few statements that we would never dream of doing and, of course, there are some stunning statements that we can't afford not to. Burgundy eyes: This suits absolutely everyone and is the ultimate in new trends. If you haven't got on board with this, do it now, it’s a trend that is not going away any time soon. Crimson and copper tones in matte or shimmering shades are universally flattering. They make green and blue eyes pop and bring out green tones in brown eyes. This is so stunning and a personal favourite. Bronze eyes, red lips: Timeless and elegant with a version to suit anyone. Bronze eyes, a bit like burgundy eyes, suit everyone — the key to this look is finding the right red lippy. Eyes can be as dark or as light as you like; use the time of day to gauge what will work best for your eyes. If you want a day look go lighter, for a day-into-night look
Keep your look warm as the weather gets cool
go medium, and night go dark. Graphic eyeliner: In the world of fashion there are a few trends that we can take and tone back to look fashion savvy rather than like a fashion faux pas. This is a trend that needs the bold to partner with but is a great twist on a cat eye, and makes for an amazing statement. Kohl eyeliner: Back to the good old
pencil. This eyeliner is now used by the cool. Line the top, bottom and top liquid line of the eye (the inside of your eye underneath your eyelashes). Take it right from the inner corner inside the eye all the way to the outer, line on top of the lash line, and smudge lightly. This look can close the eye a little so small-eyed folk be careful. Enjoy and experiment!

Steal their style
Gold Coast trend setters share their hot tips for looking stylish on a budget
ashion is what you buy, style is what you do with it." But what if you don’t know what to do with it? That’s where our stylish Gold Coast ladies come in! We’ve picked out some locals who know how to look fabulous without having to give up an arm and a leg. Most of us don’t have unlimited money, so we need to be smart about what we purchase — and what we don’t. These tips will have you exuding confidence in whatever you’re wearing whether it’s to lunch, the shops, work or just the letter box.
TIP “Always have well-fitting basics; #1 find an everyday brand that is the perfect fit for you. If it’s not a perfect fit – don’t buy it! Leanne buys Sussan bottoms whereas Linda prefers Rockmans — just for the individual perfect fit. Zara’s basic cut denim is good for both of us.”
TIP “When you have found your #4 basics at a great price, you can then afford to add a few designer pieces bought on sale. If you choose carefully you will have them for many years. Perfect designer pieces to pick up on sale include bags, shoes and clothing.”
– Leanne and Linda
– Leanne and Linda
TIP “Great accessories can add your #2 own personality to any basic item.”
TIP “Fabric type makes a big #5 difference in how expensive your outfit looks. Tweed, cotton and linen often look expensive, but you can get them at great prices.”
– Meredith
– Get it team “Have patience! The large TIP #3 designer boutiques have sales regularly. Head in store, find the items you love, ascertain your size… then wait! Guaranteed within the next two weeks there'll be a ‘spend and save’ offer, or ‘storewide percentage off’, and you’ll be ready to pounce!” – Suzy
TIP “Buy your basic t-shirts, casual #6 jeans and on-trend clothing in discount department stores like K-mart and ValleyGirl. You’ll be surprised at the quality and pay a fraction of the price. You won’t feel guilty either when you’re putting them in the donation bin at the end of the season!”
– Suzy April 2017
22
TIP “Accessorising with scarves and #7 statement earrings can always complete an outfit. Always choose the colours of your accessories with your wardrobe in mind.” – Leanne and Linda
TIP “Invest in classic pieces that will #8 have longevity in your wardrobe such as a smart navy blazer and sophisticated leather bag. Add these items to a budget outfit (e.g. jeans and white t-shirt) and you’ll look a million dollars.” – Suzy
TIP “When buying cheap jewellery, #9 go dainty. Cheap chunky jewellery can look exactly that — cheap.” – Get it team
TIP “If you don't love it don't buy #10 it — no matter how cheap it is! It's not a bargain if it sits in your cupboard and you never wear it.” – Meredith
TIP “Hunt for treasure in your local #11 Vinnies or Lifeline. There’s lots of glamorous GC ladies that pop their last season's clothes in to their local charity bin.” – Suzy
TIP “Slips are a must. Often #12 inexpensive clothing isn’t lined, so throw on your slip underneath to prevent any wardrobe malfunctions. They will also allow your garment to fit and flow more elegantly.” – Get it team
TIP “When adding a colour to your #13 wardrobe choose carefully — don’t buy it just because it’s on sale. If it’s not your colour you will never wear it. Choose colours that make you feel good.” – Leanne and Linda
TIP “If you don’t love the item, walk #14 away and think about it.” – Leanne and Linda
TIP “Facebook isn’t only for keeping #15 in touch with friends and family. There’s a ‘Marketplace’ section on there too as well as many local Facebook groups where GC women are posting their hardly-worn or never-worn designer items for a much cheaper price. Often they’re willing to negotiate on price too.” – Get it team
TIP “Check out what the trends for #16 the season are on websites such as Country Road or in fashion magazines, and then look for something similar in the more budget-friendly shops like Kmart, Target, H&M or Zara.” – Meredith
TIP “Buy versatile items. Dresses or #17 tops that can be worn a variety of ways offer greater use as they can suit a variety of occasions with a little adjustment. And people may not realise it’s the same item you wore previously either.” – Get it team
TIP “Visit stores in person, find the #18 item you love and then buy it online. Often online stores can have big sales or you can find coupon codes to use at the checkout by Googling the store name and ‘coupon code’ alongside it. Many Aussie stores offer free shipping at different times too, so keep an eye out for that by following their Instagram or subscribing to email newsletters.” – Get it team
The lovely local ladies offering their stylish tips
TIP “Don't be afraid to try on lots #19 of things that are sometimes outside your comfort zone. Also, try an item in a couple of sizes so that you are comfortable with the fit. Sometimes it pays to size up to get some extra fabric or length, and sometimes you might need to size down. Don't get caught up with the size on the tag. Get what suits you best and what you feel comfortable in.” – Meredith
TIP “Plan ahead for special events #20 rather than shopping last minute and getting an item at full price. At the last minute you probably won’t shop around because you are stressed and on a time constraint, so you’ll spend more and probably end up with an item you love less.” – Get it team 23

SOCIAL MEDIA:
The final
frontier
Beware the humblebrag Oh yes, I’m talking to you friend. Yes, you. The one that posts a photo of her new boobs in a tight, white t-shirt with the caption: “Men have been staring at me all day, I must have had something on my face?! #howembarrasing”. The humblebrag is a superficially modest or self-deprecating statement intended to draw attention, boast and incite eye rolls from all friends and family. But friend, here’s the catch: you’re not fooling anyone. We see straight through your humblebrag and we’ve had enough. If you have something to say, just say it. For example: “Look at my new boobs!”
Get it’s Hayley Bogaard is rounding up the social media cowboys for a lesson in keeping it classy online! kay ladies, prepare for a little shake up. Things in social media world have taken a turn and it’s time we got it back on track. What was once a platform for information sharing and networking has now become the digital equivalent of the wild, wild west: overrun with unbridled debauchery, lawless anarchy and the occasional tumble weed. Where we once posted funny photos of our pets, we now post selfies of our butts with inspirational quotes about self love — what?! And where we once stuck posters of beautiful celebrities on our bedroom walls, we now troll them on Instagram about their thunder thighs? Oh, for the love of feminism! But all is not lost, ladies! With a few simple steps, we can rein in this behaviour and bring a little class and elegance back to our newsfeeds. So put down the selfie stick and listen up. Mind your P’s and Q’s To be classy on social media, it’s a good idea to start with some good old-fashioned manners. Respond promptly to people’s comments and messages, and follow those back who follow you. Most importantly, pay attention to your spelling and grammar and please, for the love of grammar, use the correct their, they’re or there! Don’t be a keyboard warrior We all love the anonymity that social media affords us. Want to cyber stalk your ex’s new girlfriend and screw your nose

up at her cheap Botox? No problem. But it is not okay to abuse that anonymity by becoming a keyboard warrior. Yes, I’m talking to those users who make abusive or aggressive posts online, typically while concealing their true identity with fake names and phony accounts. If you feel the need to hide your identity in order to express your opinion, perhaps you need to ask yourself if what you have to say is really all that classy? If you have something intelligent and productive to say, by all means say it, but have the balls (or in our case, ovaries) to own it! Would you show that photo to your mum? We have become accustomed to applying filters to our photos before we post them. A little Clarendon, perhaps? Inkwell for an edgy look? Well, I have a new filter that I would like you to apply to every photo from now on. This filter is a magical filter that will instantly turn you into a classy and elegant queen: it’s the ‘what would my mum say?’ filter. It’s super easy to apply: just stop, look at your photo and ask yourself if your mum would approve of your down-
24
Would you say it to their face? If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Ring a bell? That age-old advice, handed down by your mother, still applies online. Don’t be that person who comments nasty things on a celebrity’s photo on Instagram. Would you really walk up to Lady Gaga on the street and tell her she looked like a sumo wrestler in diapers during her Superbowl performance? No? Then don’t say it online. Yes, it’s okay to have an opinion but body shaming and bullying is unacceptable, in person and online. There is a reason it’s called ‘trolling’, because — much like the trolls from the fairy tales — it’s ugly, grotesque and cowardly! So with these tips, it’s time to saddle up, take the reins and lead the wild, wild west into a new classy and elegant territory. After all, we are strong, successful and intelligent women, not rogue cowboys who drink too much and get in fights at the saloon. Okay, maybe we have the drinking in common…

His needs, his wants, and his everything are more important than you. He won’t ever buy you something ‘just because’, and if he does buy you something for a mandatory event (birthday, Christmas etc.) it will be a big deal, and you will have to be so grateful and appreciative that he was just so thoughtful. He doesn’t care that your friends hate him Your friends aren’t hard to please people, which makes this even worse. They see how he treats you and treats them, and they do not like him. They’re not backwards in coming forward about it either and even if you try to talk to him about it, he won’t care. He probably thinks of your friends as peasants and the king doesn’t care what measly peasants think.
Fancy cars, fancy suits, fancy watches and a fancy social life, this guy is all about showing how his life is so much better than yours and your friend’s combined.
legance isn’t just for ladies, and it’s high time more men displayed it too. Whether he’s got it going on or is just faking it until he makes it, the conceited, cocky guy is one to be avoided at all costs. His favourite topic of conversation is himself He somehow makes every point of conversation about himself — whether it’s Trump’s latest policy, ISIS or even women’s rights, he can swing any topic to talk about this one time he did something cool. We get it dude, you love yourself. He probably also cuts you off mid-sentence because, you know, what he has to say about himself is so much more important than whatever you were saying. He flashes his cash We mean this in a metaphoric way, but if he’s literally flashing wads of cash, that should be an instant deal breaker because, really, what legitimate and sustainable professions still hand out big wads of cash? Fancy cars, fancy suits, fancy watches and a fancy social life, this guy is all about showing how his life is so much better than yours and your friend’s combined. He implies he is loaded (whether that’s true or not), and he always has the latest ‘this’ or the most expensive ‘that’. His biggest talent is bragging He memorises every ‘cool’ thing he’s ever done so he can brag 31
He’s never wrong Even when he actually is, he’s not. You need to know that he never makes mistakes, everybody else is always to blame. There will never be any confrontation because you will already know that he’s going to get his way, and so you give up trying. You can have opinions about important matters (and you absolutely should girlfriend!) but never share these with him if they differ to his. He couldn’t give a damn and will probably make you feel stupid for thinking in such an ‘incorrect’ way. His social media is the ‘me’ show Shirtless pictures, selfies with the latest Snapchat filter and photos with groups where he looks the best (he could never look second best in a photo), it’s all about him. He doesn’t post up his family, and he hardly posts his friends. I mean, who wants to see anything but him? His followers surely don’t. He might have a large following too, girls that ogle over him and guys that want to be him, but you know if they ever met him, they’d unfollow his narcissistic self in a heartbeat. Don’t get us wrong, a confident, self-assured guy with his life together is a great catch, but just make sure he’s on the confident rather than conceited side of the fence. Otherwise you’ll spend your life being second best to his one true love — himself.

Take the first step he development of each child is a journey — a unique path that begins with one step,” believes Brian Grimes, A.B. Paterson College Principal. “Great schools are an important part of such a journey; a place of wonderful engagement, full of opportunities to try new things, places in which we can explore who we are, and to genuinely grow as individuals. They help us to shape our identity, develop our character and explore what it means to be part of a community.” At A.B. Paterson College, our students journey through our Phases of Learning, designed to ignite their curiosity, inspire learning, develop their identity, independence and responsibility, accept challenge and explore their world, and lead them on a path of self-discovery to prepare them for what lies ahead. This journey begins for our Prep to Year 3 children with an abundance of fun, friendship and learning with creativity. “I’m clever; I’m busy; I’m helpful.” Developing our children’s sense of wonderment and sparking natural curiosity in their world makes for a vibrant and inspiring learning environment. Our teachers care about your child as if they were their own, part of a safe, happy and nurturing family. Excited by everything they see and do, their enthusiasm is infectious. We understand that setting the foundations for developing positive relationships and harnessing their natural curiosity makes for a thriving learning environment. In Years 4 to 6, students begin to gain more independence; friendships and their learning are an important part of their growing world. “I’m valued; I’m known; I’m challenged.”
Supporting our children’s growing identity through choice and opportunity promotes a blossoming sense of independence and responsibility. Our teachers recognise that your child has a growing sense of maturity and identity, supporting them to step up with more choice and challenge. Encouraged to think, to feel, and to apply their learning to the world, they aim for the sky. We understand that this is a time for developing greater responsibility, independence and leadership in a collaborative learning environment. Ahead there are big changes for our students in Years 7 to 9 as they enter the world of Senior School, a safe haven where they can experiment, explore, succeed, attempt and learn. “I’m learning to be me; I’m part of a family; I’m ready to try new things”. This stage of the journey is all about encouraging our students to strive to be their best, where they can flourish in a supportive but challenging environment. Our teachers know that your child is ready to explore their sense of self within a
supportive and caring family environment. Challenged to take the leap into the unknown, they are not afraid to give anything a go, knowing that we are there to catch them should they fall. We understand that this is a time of great physical and emotional change, a time when we can work together as partners to provide a caring environment in which your child can safely grow and develop. Finally, the destination years offer a safe path of discovery as Years 10 to 12 progress towards journey’s end — graduation and the next big step in life’s journey. “I’m a leader; I’m an adventurer; I’m ready for what lies ahead.” We look to shape our young people’s capacity to succeed as confident, capable and contributing citizens, along whichever path they choose to travel in the world beyond. Our teachers mentor your child as a young adult, walking beside them as they make important decisions about their futures. Shaped as positive supporters of each other, they understand the value of giving back to their wider communities. We understand your child is an individual with specific interests and talents, and that many choices and opportunities allow for a more personalised, tailored learning experience, forging a strong foundation for their future success. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” – Lao Tzu Take that one step and begin your journey at our Open Day on Wednesday, 26 April, 11.00am to 12.30pm. It would be a privilege to have your children entrusted into our care. RSVP: kmilburn@abpat.qld.edu.au P: (07) 5561 4140 abpat.qld.edu.au

Stop missing out Learn the warning signs of hearing loss — the invisible health issue many tend to ignore 'm always trying to figure out what's really going on. Always having to fill in the gaps, but never getting all the details. It's like trying to do a jigsaw when I don't even know what the picture is, and I'm missing one of the vital middle pieces.” Melbourne author of the award-winning book Whisper Chrissie Perry wasn’t talking about hearing loss when she said the above quote, but she may as well have been. It vividly captures the distress many of our patients feel when they come to us with hearing loss. When we have visible disorders we get checked and prodded quickly. Sight isn’t as good as it used to be? We go to the optometrist. That blemish looking slightly different? Off to the skin clinic. Pain in the lower back? To the physio we go. But hearing we tend to ignore for as long as we can — usually until our family intervenes and insists we get our hearing checked. But what have we missed in the meantime and what could we have done to prevent the disorder getting worse? More and more research supports early intervention for hearing loss in both adults and children. In adults, hearing loss can lead to social isolation, depression, and there’s a potential link to dementia too. As hearing diminishes people start to withdraw from conversations and social activity as it becomes too difficult to keep pace with conversations. This affects not only the sufferer of hearing loss but their
friends and family who become frustrated with their loved one being unable to hear, participate and respond appropriately. It’s not just the health effects we need to be concerned about. The financial costs affect individuals and communities as well. The World Health Organisation has found that people with untreated hearing loss earn, on average, less than people with normal hearing. Undiagnosed and untreated hearing loss in children can lead to delays in speech development and ongoing learning disorders, potentially affecting them for the rest of their lives. l l l l l l l l
Know the signs in adults Difficulty hearing background noise Difficulty understanding women’s and children’s voices Thinking everyone is mumbling or their speech sounds muffled Turning the TV or radio louder than others Asking people to repeat; saying “huh” or “what” often Tinnitus or ringing in the ears; ears feel blocked Know the signs in children Doesn’t respond to name being called Doesn’t turn to locate sounds after six months of age
l Doesn’t respond when back is turned or from across the room l Speech and language is delayed If you or a child are experiencing any of these symptoms an evaluation with a registered and fully qualified audiologist is recommended. For people with hearing loss there are now many options in treatment and hearing devices to assist. We carry a full range of devices from all manufacturers including invisible, extended wear Lyric hearing aids right through to cochlear implants for those who are profoundly deaf. Missing a piece in a jigsaw puzzle is frustrating; missing pieces of life and activities around you is devastating. If you suspect hearing loss, don’t delay talking to someone about your options. Ageing gracefully Owner of Vision Personal Training in Bundall Jeff Osborne reveals how to stop an old person moving into your body will start off with the bad news: every day after the age of 30 things are going downhill physically! But wait… before you get too sad about it… I do have good news! The good news is that you can completely control the process and there are many ways to totally reverse some of those processes all together. What I want to highlight is that after 30, it’s an uphill battle. The hill gets steeper as you get older, so the best time to start was yesterday, the second best time is today. A few things that decline which have a measurable effect on your appearance and your life are your muscle strength and bone strength. The rate you lose both of these things has many factors but, put basically, things decline unless you do something about it. Why should I care you ask? The reason is because it doesn't all happen in one day. You don't go from running, jumping and active to wheelchair bound in a day (if you are lucky). For most people that process takes years and years, and it sneaks up on us. Over time we accept a lower quality of movement and each year as the time passes our expectations of our physical capabilities drop lower and lower with our posture. It's not too late to turn things around, but it is much better to catch these things early! It all starts with jumping. When our leg strength declines to the point that moving our own body weight at speed becomes too scary to try, the loss of strength hastens. We lose confidence in our ability to land, even from small heights. Then, as the confidence in that goes, you start to lose balance and coordination. The next thing to decrease is your ability to step up
them are doing what they can to stop an old person moving into their body. Unless you do something about it there is no ageing gracefully. Take care of your body, it’s the only one you have got! onto high steps. You use your hand on your knee, you take the elevator, and avoid stepping down onto things. Then, before you know it, you couldn't stand on one leg for 60 seconds without falling over. After that comes a loss in confidence on uneven surfaces, so you start shuffling, and you need a hand from someone to walk around. There goes your independence. Now getting down and up from the toilet on your own is a struggle. Once that is lost, so is freedom and you are in a home! See how quickly that escalated? To turn it around you just have to start! Start what you ask? Strength training. Lifting progressively heavier weights to give your body the stimulus to know that staying healthy, fit and agile is a priority. You only need 30 minutes twice a week to see great results. You do need to start slow and work your way up making sure you do things correctly and don't get injured. Making that commitment to your body will see you do what one of my clients has made his mission! Peter is intent on "Dying as young as possible as late as possible". We have many clients over 60, two clients in our studio approaching their 80s, and one who is well into her 80s. All of April 2017

“With sport, music and community service, these are factors that come together to create unique opportunities for our students. SMASHED AVOCADO • 1 avocado • 1 small handful of coriander leaves • Squeeze of lemon juice COFFEE AND MAPLE BACON • 1 tsp instant coffee • 2 tbsp boiling water • 2 tbsp maple syrup • 6 thick slices of middle bacon, rind removed
METHOD To make fritter batter, in a large bowl, mix eggs and egg yolk with sea salt and flour until combined and smooth. Fold in corn, feta, fennel, spring onion, dill, lemon zest and juice, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside. 36
To make smashed avocado, spoon avocado flesh onto a small plate. Add a pinch of salt and pepper, coriander and lemon juice, and mash roughly with a fork. Set aside. CHOCOLATE, BEETROOT AND MILK CRUNCH PREP & COOK TIME 3 ½ HOURS, INCLUDING FREEZING I SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS • 3 large beetroots (weighing about 450g), juiced • 1 large beetroot (weighing about 150g), skin removed and retained • 1 tsp caster sugar • 1 cup thickened cream • 2 vanilla pods, split and seeds scraped PASTRY • 1 cup almond meal • 1 cup plain flour • ¼ tsp baking powder • 1 vanilla pod, split and seeds scraped • 2 tbsp caster sugar • Pinch of sea salt flakes • 70g unsalted butter CHOCOLATE CREMEUX • 4 egg yolks • ¼ cup caster sugar • 1 cup thickened cream • 1 cup milk • 1 cup chocolate drops (70% cocoa) • Pinch of salt MILK CRUNCH • 4 tbsp self-raising flour • 3 tbsp milk powder • 2 tbsp oat bran • 100g unsalted butter • 2 tsp caster sugar • Pinch of sea salt flakes • 100g white chocolate, finely chopped
METHOD Bring beetroot juice to the boil in a small saucepan, reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes until it begins to thicken and reduce by two-thirds. Remove from heat and allow to cool. PASTRY Combine all pastry ingredients in a food processor and blitz until mixture comes together as a ball of dough. Shape into a disc, then wrap in cling film and place in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 170˚C. Grease an 18x18cm baking tin and line two baking trays with paper. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface until 3mm thick. Use to line prepared tin. Place a sheet of baking paper on pastry and top with baking breads or uncooked rice or lentils. Blind-bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven, allow to cool. Reduce oven temperature to 140˚C. CREMEUX Whisk egg yolks and sugar in a bowl until
pale and thick. Combine cream and milk in a saucepan and bring just to the boil. Turn heat down to a simmer. Pour one ladle of hot cream mixture into the egg yolks, whisking constantly. Repeat twice more. At this stage, incorporate sweetened egg yolks into the cream. Slowly pour yolk mixture into the hot cream, whisking constantly. Continue to whisk over heat until mixture thickens and coats the back of a wooden spoon. Place chocolate drops in a large bowl and pour on hot custard. Stir constantly until all chocolate has melted. Allow to cool. Pour cremeux onto pastry. Refrigerate for 2 hours to set.
MILK CRUNCH In a large bowl, combine all crunch ingredients but chocolate. Using your fingers, rub all ingredients together until you have a rustic crumb-like texture. Sprinkle milk crumble evenly over one of the prepared baking trays. Bake for 3 minutes, stir and shuffle the tray, then return to oven and repeat three times, until you have a golden crumb. Allow to cool. Melt the white chocolate in a 37
heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Pour over the crumb, stir to combine and freeze until set. Break into small clusters and return to freezer. Reduce oven temperature to 110˚C. Lay beetroot peelings in a single layer on remaining prepared baking tray. Sprinkle with sugar and bake for 35-45 minutes until the crisps shrivel and curl at the edges. Allow to cool and crisp. Divide the cream between two bowls. Whip one to soft peaks with the vanilla seeds and the other to soft peaks with 2 tsp of beetroot reduction. Spoon both creams into piping bags and place in fridge until required. Press an 8cm cookie cutter into the cremeux and pastry, then carefully push the tart up and through the cutter and place in the middle of a serving plate. Repeat so that you have four tarts. Pipe one small swirl of the vanilla cream on each tart and then pipe on two large beetroot cream swirls. Top with the beetroot crisps and surround the tart on one side with the milk crunch. Your ruler, the Moon, will highlight your innermost feelings. Your challenge is to act upon these in the most authentic way.
H ARIES March 20 – April 19 Your attention is focused on your income this April as both your rulers Mars and Mercury tour through your sign. Your bold and confident attitude is directed toward moving forward with financial plans, however, Mercury puts the proverbial spanner in the works. From the 9th, the swift planet moves backwards, suggesting you need more information before making financially based decisions. H TAURUS April 20 – May 21 You may discover that you are not on the same page as a friend. This may be about a joint venture, differing financial values, or even your fears and anxieties. Take cues from your ruler, and while she’s treading water, it may be best for you to do the same. Embracing a confident attitude will help you connect with what’s most important to you now. H GEMINI May 21 – June 21 A boost of energy and confidence, not seen in two years, is welcomed as Mars enters your sign on the 21st. A new health and fitness regime may inspire you to get fit and focussed. A sense of what you want out of life and how to go about getting it may also give you a spring in your step you can enjoy until early June. H CANCER June 21 – July 22 Are you currently doing a job that you don’t believe in or that doesn’t feel authentic to you?
H LEO July 22 – August 23 Getting outside of your comfort zone and saying yes where you may have otherwise said no will highlight new and sudden opportunities, especially on the 14th when the Sun makes his once a year connection to Uranus. Technology may be a part of the picture, as well as travel or the internet. April is bookmarked to be a very exciting and progressive month for you. H VIRGO August 23 - September 22 Feisty Mars heats up your 9th sector for the first time in two years. Increased motivation and focus may be experienced in life topics such as study, overseas travel, technology or philosophy. There is a lot of retrograde action this month, including your ruler, also in the 9th sector. Mercury’s backward passage encourages you to explore your options. H LIBRA September 22 – October 23 Relationship tensions take a brief reprieve this month as your ruler retrogrades into Pisces and your 6th sector from the 4th to 28th. You’ll gain an increased sense of empowerment by taking a step back and diving head first into your work schedule. Not only will you feel so much more productive, it will help take your mind off issues you are struggling to find balance with.
H SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Your confidence in the world of dating is boosted as your ruler, Mars, tours your relationship sector until the 21st. This once in every two-year cycle will gift you with a proactive and bold attitude toward love. If you’re partnered, you can expect extra oomph to power through any obstacles or challenges you and your significant other may be facing.
How do you
H SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 – Dec 22 Your ruler Jupiter, as well as Mercury and Venus, undergo their respective retrograde cycles during this month. Delays, setbacks and crossed wires are all possible, especially due to Mercury’s reverse tour in your 5th house from the 21st. The 24th, 27th and the 28th are all powerfully charged days as Mercury works with Saturn and Uranus. Sudden ideas or ‘ah-ha’ moments may inspire you to move forward with a creative project. H CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20 April is set to be a supercharged month as Mars tours your 5th house of fun! This is like cosmic permission to loosen the reigns a bit and enjoy the good things that life has to offer. Focus energy and effort on a creative project or a pastime that brings you joy. Children also promise joy, frivolity and laughter. H AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19 Any money woes, including delays or setbacks, will start to sort themselves out from the 15th. Venus will return to direct movement in the sign of Pisces. Known as ‘stationing direct,’ this is likened to a person who was ill, but the worst is over. Your bank balance may begin to feel the same way as you can now look forward to more coming in than going out. H PISCES February 19 – March 20 The 22nd sees Mars enter your domestic domain for the first time in two years. You’ll be energised by all things to do with your home or the people you share it with. In the sign of Gemini, you’ll be driven to improve communications with family members. An IT update or upgrade is also a possibility under Gemini’s influence.

GET IT I LAST WORD
That’s the impression I get You are what Facebook says you are… so what impression are you leaving on people? Elizabeth Campbell talks online expectations and realities ave you followed someone online; you see their Facebook live videos and status updates, you stalk them on Twitter and connect with them on LinkedIn, you become FB friends… you basically feel like you know them, right? Then you meet them IRL (in real life) and they are really nothing like you thought. And it's not only in online dating — which I can’t stand for that very reason — it also happens in business. I had been following this amazing, talented, passionate, high-profile woman online and was so excited when we connected and started messaging personally. Then even more excited when I got to meet her! I couldn’t wait. I was like one of those crazed boy-band fans … well, not really, but that was the feeling. You know, when you’re a kid and have the posters up on your wall and then you get to go to the concert and you almost die because the lead singer is going to lock eyes with you in a crowd of millions, get you up on stage, declare his undying love and you’ll live happily ever after. No? Just me then. I digress. Back to the original story. When I met this gorgeous woman I felt let down because she wasn’t as friendly as she came across online. Now I didn’t hold it against her because she might have had a headache, felt ill or stressed, or was just pre-occupied with something personal going on in her life. I get it. But I did feel a little disappointed. Has that ever happened to you? Have you ever thought about your presence on social media? And the image or
impression you are giving people? I went to listen to a great speaker the other night in Brisbane. Millennial and highly intelligent (super young) entrepreneur and businessman Mario Malik made us do an activity. “Open up your Facebook account and find the worst picture of yourself.” We all waited with bated breath thinking, “Please don’t make it me post again and tag people. I. Will. Die!” PS — that particular picture was of a fun night out on the streets of Surfers for a birthday in my mid-20s where we may have all got a bit carried away and tried to steal the mic from a busker to belt out some tunes. And then he said these three little words. “Now delete it!” Wait. What? “No one should have to see that! What impression are you giving people?” Good point, but how far do you go? There’s already the impression that people only show all the good stuff in their lives on Facebook and that it’s getting to be fake because we aren’t seeing the “real you”. My Facebook account is full of everything I do, it’s like a crazy rave concert in there! People post on my wall and tag me in heaps of stuff. You’ll see me here, there and everywhere. I’m travelling, exercising, eating, taking myself on dates, hanging with friends and family. But it’s a true reflection of my life…which is a bit crazy and busy! The only thing I didn’t talk about when it was happening was my divorce because it was the advice of my lawyer, plus I consider myself gracious and elegant, and I wouldn’t have ever
aired my dirty laundry online. I don’t agree with that. Unless it’s going to help someone, what’s the point? The other thing I don’t often portray is when I’m having a bad day. For starters, I do have them but I don’t have them very often because when I’m down, my business goes down. I need to stay up as much as I can. If I think it will help others I will post. One of the most engaging posts I ever wrote was basically how I wanted to quit my business and get a job. Pretty much in coming to this realisation I called my Mum as I was sitting on the kitchen floor sobbing my eyes out curled up in the foetal position rocking back and forth. We’ve all been there. But this one went ballistic. People loved to see the real and raw side. However, I didn’t leave it there … I told people what I did next to get out the funk. Had something to eat, went for a walk, listened to music, played some affirmational words, got dressed up and put on my hot red lippie! So what’s the point to my story? Well, I think it’s really important in this day and age that we all support each other regardless of how you think people are or what they show of themselves — or in my case, how we build them up in our heads to be something more than they are. Having an online presence is an impression of our lives. What impression are you leaving on people? Do you need to delete some pictures? Mine are staying because I think they are funny and that crazy night in Surfers for my birthday was heaps of fun! And fun is one of my highest values.
