Because... it’s cooling down

From t he edit or ELIZABETH CAMPBELL

Winter is approaching and we have a fabulous new range of locally designed and made ponchos and capes from Nina & B.

In honour of our All About You edition of Get it this month I threw myself into “research” and I’ve just got back from a massage. It was delightful but as Mr Strong Hands was kneading out my knots – it wasn’t as relaxing as it sounds, but it worked – I got thinking. I definitely don’t take enough time out for myself; a bit of “me time”, you know? I’m sure you probably feel the same way, as do many other women I’ve talked to.

Phone 5561 1038 Cnr Young & Scarborough Streets, Southport

Finding time can be really difficult, you may or may not have kids, a career, a business, run a household, do the shopping, sporting and fitness commitments, dinner, catching up with friends, making sure we spend enough time with our families, homework, housework, the list goes on.

Open Mon – Sat. Easy parking in Australia Fair www.shoetique.com.au

Now open for dinner Friday and Saturday nights from 5.30pm

Research shows women today are less happy than we’ve been in the past 40 years and there are many reasons why, but lack of “me time” may be the major one. In everyday life it can be hard to even find five minutes to have to yourself. But it’s extremely important that we do because we need time to recharge our batteries so we don’t get stressed, exhausted and burnt out. Making it a priority will only have positive effects. But not only that, we are encouraged to schedule time for ourselves. It may just be 5-10 minutes each day to have a cup of tea, call a friend or do some meditation. It’s certainly a good starting point. So I give you permission right now to go make a cuppa or grab a glass of vino and sit down with this issue. I hope you find it inspiring and motivational.

LA bound

LOCAL PROFILE

Gold Coast actor Miyuki Lotz is heading to Los Angeles this month where she’ll mix with hot Hollywood casting directors, but it’s inspiring other mums that she enjoys most What are you doing in LA? I got into the Professional Actor’s Masterclass through the Australian Institute of Performing Arts (AIPA). It’s a six-week intensive, which allows us to work closely with many prestigious US casting directors, as well as various managers and agents. Entry is via audition only and I am still pinching myself on getting in! How did you get into acting? I always took drama throughout my schooling years and completed the entire AMEB Speech and Drama syllabus as an extra curriculum. However, I only completely immersed myself into an acting career when I had finished a career in ballet. I got together with (my current) dialect/acting coach and she helped me audition for the BFA in Acting degree at QUT. They only accepted 12 candidates across Australia that year and somehow I was one of them. Was it a life-long passion? Yes! Since the age of three I’ve wanted to pursue acting as a full-time career. I’m lucky to have such a supportive husband and family surrounding me. What’s your earliest memory of acting? Presenting this in-house play for all the

integrated families at Christmas time. I think I was five or six. I directed and wrote this spinoff of every Disney princess movie and The Wizard of Oz combined. What are your dreams and aspirations with your career? I’m going to shoot for the moon here and say…winning an Academy Award for Best Actress in a leading role. Alternatively, I would love to be a part of the main cast in a really well-written and long-running TV show like Glee, CSI, Law & Order: SVU or Supernatural. What are your tips for other women? You have the potential to live the life you truly want. Listen to your needs but be insightful to those around you. This may fluctuate on a daily basis and you need to just go with it. Have a loving relationship with yourself. Make time for me time by journaling, getting a massage, going to a movie solo, reading an insightful book or meditating. These moments of reflection will help you realise what it is you really want from life and to be grateful for what you have.

Special report

with Elizabeth Campbell

Deatht rap id you know this year two women a week in Australia are dying at the hands of their intimate partner from domestic violence? Two. A week. In 2014 it was one a week. One woman who died recently during a violent dispute with her partner had a one-week-old baby sleeping in the house. And it’s just not good enough, according to Assist A Sista director and co-founder Nicolle. “It’s heavy,” says Nicolle. “We need to bring this to light. We need to talk about it. We need to take action,” she says. Her continued plea for awareness and help comes after Special Taskforce into Domestic and Family Violence

April 2015

It’s time to speak out about domestic violence – the silent predator killing innocent women

chairwoman Dame Quentin Bryce handed down a recent report that outlined 140 ways to stop domestic violence. Assist A Sista helps women transition out of refuge, but for every woman who leaves a refuge once they have reestablished themselves, nine more are waiting in crisis accommodation to be placed in refuge. There hasn’t been a new refuge built in Queensland in more than 20 years. “The women who leave are incredibly brave. They stay in motels with their children. But they are away from their support group, and the kids miss their father, school and friends. It’s also so 14

financially and emotionally difficult, they often feel they have no option but to return,” says Nicolle. “But there are many options available to these brave women and families. There are numerous support services available to help and we just need to let everyone know that. “There’s a perception in our

community about women in domestic violence situations. We often hear people say ‘why doesn’t she just leave?’ Or that because she stays she is accepting the violence. But as a community we need to stop victim blaming because the responsibility lies with the perpetrator. Why should she have to leave? He should stop the behaviour and violence. “As a community if we don’t start holding perpetrators accountable the cycle of violence will continue and the deaths will keep rising. “We have to shift the shame. It’s not the woman’s fault this has happened to her. We need to change that perception.” One in three women are affected by domestic violence, a statistic Nicolle says is unacceptable. “Domestic violence thrives on silence,” she says. “It’s about isolation. It’s about power. It’s about control. It is anti-social behaviour and it’s everyone’s business to stand up and speak out because innocent women are dying. We are not living in a war zone. We live in a beautiful country and a wonderful state. Next month marks Domestic Violence Prevention Month but Nicolle says there are several things we can do to raise awareness at any given time. “We need to talk about it more and share the statistics,” she says. “As a community we can’t blame alcohol or mental health issues any more. It’s 100 per cent a choice. Perpetrators need to be

held accountable for their behaviour and they need to feel the full force of the law. We need to throw the book at them. “Hold family and friends accountable.

Call the police because your phone call might be the one that makes the difference between life and death. “Men must also speak up. We have many great men in our community and they need to speak out and share their intolerance.” You can also help by giving household and school items, and donations are accepted. Assist A Sista has no direct contact with any of the families that are supported through refuge organisations. They work on referral contacts only. For more information contact Assist A Sista on info@assistasista.com.au or visit the website at www.assistasista.com.au If you or a friend are affected by domestic violence, please call Queensland DV Connect on 1800 811 811 or 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732). Be like Rove McManus, Shelley Craft and Mia Freedman and contact Assist A Sista to join the movement.

Leading sexologist Juliet Allen is on the Gold Coast this month to answer all your questions about sex…and you know what? They are all perfectly normal. Juliet spends some time with Get it to talk sex and why it should be a topic on everyone’s lips What is a sexologist? A sexologist is basically a “sexpert”. Sexology is the study of the science of sex, but I also studied psychology and the main focus and aim of my work is empowering women to embrace their sexuality and desire for a healthy sex life. How did you become a sexologist? I love sex - I love talking about it, learning about it and empowering others to do that same. I studied an undergrad degree in psychology and then went on to study my Masters in Sexology. I became a sexologist because I wanted to spend my days working in an area that I am passionate about and talking about sex all day long just fitted perfectly as a career choice! What does your job entail? My job is very diverse and no two days

young age now (via porn). This isn’t necessarily a good thing, but it does open up the conversations between them at a younger age and I’m hoping this means that as adults they will also be open to talking about it more openly and freely. Why do you believe it should be part of natural conversation and not a taboo topic? Sex is a normal and natural part of life! The fact it is still taboo is ridiculous. Everyone (well mostly everyone) experiences sex

Let’s talk about are the same. I spend a couple of days a week coaching my clients (this is similar to sex therapy), I write for a couple of different publications, I run women’s-only events around Australia, and I have an online e-course. I really enjoy writing and educating through my blog you can find lots of my work at juliet-allen.com/ blog What are some of the common sex issues people see you about? The most common challenge people face is that they are experiencing low libido, or a lack of want for sex with their current partner. This is really normal and natural, especially in long-term relationships. I also speak to a lot of women about how they can get what they want sexually - this may mean dealing with shame and guilt that they feel, or giving them the tools to communicate more openly with their sexual partners. Often my clients just need to hear that what they are experiencing is normal and OK and that sets them on the path of feeling more sexually empowered. Are we as a community getting better about talking about sex without it being frowned upon? I think sex is still a big taboo topic in our community, but it seems to be getting better in comparison to a few years ago. I guess young people are exposed to images of sex from a very April 2015

throughout their life time. Most of us think about it a lot and want to be experiencing great sex ... it makes sense that it’s important to encourage n a t u r a l conversations around it. What do people say when you tell them you are a sexologist? People are great. I always notice their facial expressions and more often than not they act really cool and pretend like it’s a normal career path (haha)! People are often very intrigued and feel comfortable opening up about all sorts of sex stories. There’s only been one time when a guy literally spat out his beer when I told him and thought I was joking! What’s one of the most memorable sex stories you’ve been told or heard? I get all sorts of sex stories, but in respect for my clients I never divulge details of their experiences. There are all sorts of crazy sex 18

sex stories out there, but in reality most people just want to enjoy feeling loved and respected ... when there is love and respect pleasure will always follow. What are the top FAQs you get? My sex drive has disappeared, how can I feel that intense desire for sex again? I’m in a heterosexual relationship with a man, but I fantasise about women, is this normal? I can’t reach orgasm with my partner, how can I feel comfortable enough to let go and climax? See Get Out and About on page 8 for more details on the Q&A with Juliet.

Coming back

By John Burchell

on’t you love the adverts where you use a product to clean something, or whatever, and the catch line,“time to sit back and relax” is coupled with a blissed out mum sipping a double latte, reading the latest big seller with the family dog at her feet…. When does that happen in real life?! Time for self is a precious commodity. Down time is one of the most important aspects of maintaining good health and good mood, yet one of the least practiced. I often bring up the subject of wish lists. They are a great way to gauge where you are at relative to where you would like to be. Should it be that you are constantly thinking, I would really like to do a certain thing but just can’t seem to fit it in, then you are seriously in need of some all-aboutyou therapy.

You dont need a script for a healthy life

Feeling good, happy and healthy is an equation of that old phrase “mind, body and spirit”. Change one aspect of this and we start to feel not so good. For example, if your mind is full of the things that have to be achieved in a certain time frame and a few other stress factors, then it becomes less clear. Coming back to you is the process of freeing yourself from all of that stuff that gets in the way of getting on with just being and reducing the habit of overdrive. One of the first steps is finding a “bliss out” mechanism. This might be a massage, spa, and a make over, meditation, floating down a stream, a good coffee, a favorite rose. Only you can determine the best mechanism. Once you find what it is that you

John Burchell ND, Hom Nutritional & Integrative Medical Practitioner

really love, you can use a little tool termed conditioned reflex. Here’s how it works. When you re in your bliss situation, couple it with a favorite scent, flavor or a sound. Let’s say a walk in the rainforest is your thing and you have with you a bottle of lemon myrtle essential oil that you breathe in with the fresh rainforest air every so often. The tool of conditioned reflex is to use that essential oil to breath in when your workload back in the real world gets all too much. That little breath will for a moment take you back to you in your blissful place. To take that to the next level, to really implement being in your true space at all times is a bigger equation. With some guidance in the tools of good mind practices good nutrition and sound relationship practices it is entirely achievable. 150 Ashmore Road, Benowa Book today, you will feel better for it! www.medsan.com.au Like us on Facebook!

SUCCESS

NextBIG IDEA

A new business venture can be born from just a single idea or problem as these two women found. Meet Hayley Birtles-Eades and Sue Ismiel. One you’ll know and the other you’re about to hear a lot more of

A lovely idea: Hayley Birtles-Eades ow do you become a serial entrepreneur? Are you born with the skills? Does it depend on where you grew up? Or where you went to school? Success, we are told, is about who you know, getting a good education, following the rules…or is it? Hayley Birtles-Eades defies the traditional definition of the word. She’s the name behind three cracking businesses – Porcelain Rose, Born Brands and Love Lockets - that have been enormously successful. She does not have a uni degree … heck, she didn’t even finish high school. Hayley does not come from a home filled with plenty of things or from a family whose walls are laden with university degrees, but what was abundant as she grew up was an entrepreneurial spirit that pervaded her home. Her latest foray into business is Love Lockets; an online and retail jewellery provider of floating lockets, began only 12 months ago, and has since grown exponentially expanding down the east coast with eight retail outlets, two in New Zealand and one in the UK…and soon New York. What began as a curiosity has evolved into a million-dollar juggernaut poised to conquer the world. She came across floating lockets at the right time; when she was looking for her next“big idea”. To Hayley, Love Lockets is the exclamation mark of her life. A fiercely devoted mother of three and still married to Corey, the love of her life, she is focused on the legacy she will leave for her family. For this kid who started smoking at 7, first April 2015

forayed into entrepreneurship at 6 selling raffle tickets, making her own jewellery to sell at 9, dropped out of school in Year 10, she’s done OK. “We moved to Australia from the UK when I was 13. Anything that could go wrong did – our sponsors ripped us off, Mum and Dad could not work because of the immigration process (I went out and got a job to pay our rent and supported our entire family for a year. I was the only one with a job in the family and only 13,” says Hayley. “It is my parents who taught me that a good idea is not limited by where you went to school or who you know. I learnt to build businesses from them. “If you want to go into business and are not sure what to do, just go out and find out what you need to know, find a mentor to help you, travel around the world, surround yourself with people who have what you want and learn from them.” - Annette Densham

Australian businesswoman gives back: Sue Ismiel rom being a humble housewife, who had the desire to solve her daughter’s unwanted hair problem, to building an internationally renowned company, Sue Ismiel, the CEO of Sue Ismiel & Daughters, the makers of Nad’s, is a true entrepreneur while also continually giving to those less fortunate. An inspirational woman who has embodied the Australian hard-working spirit, Sue has grown her business, made up of leading brands Nad’s and Nitwits to become an iconic Australian company with an enviable global reputation. Nad’s products are now sold internationally 30

- quite the feat for a product created in Sue’s kitchen 23 years ago. In 1974, aged just 15 and not able to speak any English, Sue migrated from Syria to Australia with her family. Working as a medical record’s officer in a private Sydney hospital in the early 90s, Sue created Nad’s Hair Removal Gel to help her middle daughter Natalie with sensitive skin. Named after her eldest daughter Nadine, the phenomenal success of this one product provided a platform to develop a range of innovative depilatory and skincare products that have become a household name. Not just a hard working business woman, Sue is an inspiring example of how hard work and dedication can lead to great things in life. “I believe with financial success comes an obligation to help others and passionately believe our civilisation depends on able women, those who can nurture, love and lead. Success is an amazing feeling, but that feeling is best preserved through giving back,” says Sue. From donating to the Jean Hailes Foundation to fund a world-first study known as the Sue Ismiel International Study into Women’s Health and Hormones now published in a US Medical Journal, sponsoring 101 children through Child Fund in Ethiopia and raising more than $200,000 for Westmead Children’s Hospital, Sue is always committed to enhancing the lives of women and those less fortunate. “Never taking no for an answer is the greatest trait of every successful individual. Embracing every challenge and extracting endless opportunities from every obstacle presented to you is the driving force behind successful outcomes,” she says.

Limo story

Every girl at some stage in her life has grown up thinking about her Cinderella moment. Enter Luxcars, the Gold Coast company with the only Cinderellatm Limo in Australia

he original Queen Elizabeth Coach “Britannica” was all the inspiration Luxcars owners Alena and Slava Kouzmenkov needed to bring the only Cinderellatm Limo in Australia to life. Turned away by many of the big car companies, banks, council and government, the Runaway Bay couple went it alone, backing and funding the project themselves. “It took us two hard years from the moment we decided we wanted to do it, fund the project and make it live,” says Alena. The Cinderella tm Limo finally hit the streets of the Gold Coast in January this year. “We have only been operating for about three months but it has created huge interest already. We are taking bookings not just for this year but already for 2016 and 2017. We do weddings, formals, birthday cruise transfers, airport pick-ups, general transfers,

engagements, hens parties and children’s birthday parties,” she says. The business also works in partnership with Bloom Beauty Salon and does beauty tours and high teas. “We are working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation Australia and are now waiting for our first little princesses to arrive. We also support and help other charities and organisations and love interacting with our Gold Coast community,” says Alena. “We couldn’t do all of this without our fantastic drivers and support team that includes all of our neighbours, friends and family.” P 5529 1813 or 0451 027 717, visit gcluxcars.com.au or email info@gcluxcars.com.au 31

Street Scene in rural Rajasthan

Colours of India

Amber Fort in Jaipur

r u lo o c t u o b a ll a s ’ it –

NDIA! The mere mention of the name conjures up conflicting opinions and experiences. Noisy, dirty, over crowded, traffic chaos and more. Opinion is divided and India, like most emerging economies, has problems that require attention. But to the discerning traveller it is mystical, magical, culturally invigorating and most of all a blaze of colour. From the array of colour when you meet a group of women clad in traditional sari – think red, orange, lilac and yellow - to the brown ochre desert landscapes, India is all about colour. This fascinating country had always held my interest but no area more so than the desert state of Rajasthan and, more particularl,y the four fabulous and colourful (there’s that word again) cities...and so I decided to see for myself. Rajasthan is primarily desert but within that desert are some of the world’s greatest and most distinctive cities – built by the ruling Rajput Kings of their time and largely still controlled by their descendents even today. Firstly let me be honest – travel in India is tiring at any time and no more so that in the far outer reaches of Rajasthan. These days you can travel between most of the cities by air but I strongly suggest if you want to experience the true colours and flavours of India, you buckle up and take the bus. It will be long days and very bumpy roads at times, but you will come back exhilarated and fascinated by the moving canvas of life you will see along the highways and back roads of India. April 2015

Lake Palace Hotel at Udaiphur

The desert scenery is beautiful in a stark and at times harsh way, but it was these four major cities of Rajasthan I was keen to visit. Each is blessed with a unique feature or element of cultural significance to make a visit essential. The four cities? My “stepping off” city on my tour of Rajasthan was Jaipur, the largest and most progressive in the state. A city that is growing quickly with many development projects under way and it is fair to say the vision of the city’s planners is well above the mark of other Indian cities. Jaipur is known as the Pink City (I did mention India was very colourful) and is so named because of the distinctly coloured buildings throughout the central district. They were originally painted so as to imitate the red stone architecture synonymous with the 32

Mughal cities of ancient times. For a humorous but no less accurate interpretation of life in Jaipur, maybe view the recent film, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as a prelude to visiting the area. Jaipur forms part of the iconic “Golden Triangle” - the other cities being Delhi and Agra (Taj Mahal) and features some outstanding examples of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Principal among these are the Amber Fort and the sprawling City Palace. The Amber Fort, named after the goddess Amba (and not its colouring) is a massive fort/palace complex built in a hybrid Hindu/Muslim style. Within the fort is the Sheesh Mahal, an area adorned with thousands of mirrored tiles on the walls and ceilings. The elephant ride up the winding track to the entry courtyard of Amber Fort has become very touristy these days but still should be done....and try and imagine the pomp and ceremony in older times as the rulers entered the fort in such a fashion. A further 1km walk uphill from Amber Fort is the less visited Jaigarh Fort, which I strongly suggest you include in any itinerary. Walk among the scenic gardens and take in the spectacular views over Amber Fort and the surrounding hills. Truly breathtaking. My next city was Jodhpur, commonly known as the Blue City (there we go again) and you need do no more than visit the stunning Mehranghar Fort and look over this sprawling city to understand why. Much of the city’s dwellings are painted in a colourful blue, which when mixed with the

View over Jaipur from Amber

Palace of the Winds in Jaipur

white of other buildings creates a beautiful spectacle. The fort of course is an experience all of its own and one of the best examples of wealth and opulence enjoyed by the rulers over the years. A massive complex, Mehranghar Fort houses the Maharajah’s Palace (still occupied), several temples and because of its position atop a hill overlooking the city, provides spectacular views from every angle. Jodhpur is a city full of attractions – forts, palaces, temples, havelis (homes), culture and tradition. You can walk down from the fort into the heart of the city, through its bustling markets scented with spices in the air. For something truly memorable I’d suggest you try (and it’s not easy) to book a dinner in the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, the permanent residence of the current Maharaja of Jodhpur and home to one of the most stunning five-star hotels and restaurants in India. Jodhpur (and yes, the riding breeches were named after this Indian city) sits on the edge

of the Thar Desert and is also known as the Gateway to Thar, which is where we head next. Jaiselmer is a destination for the truly adventurous, located on the westernmost frontier of India and close to the Pakistan border. It’s a very long bus ride to the Golden City (I warned you!) and not on most tour group itineraries…but well worth the time taken to get there. Located in the vastness of the aforementioned Thar Desert, this city is very old and life goes on within the city’s golden walls and people go about their daily duties much as they did in earlier days. Jaisalmer is far less commercialised than other parts of India and well worth the time and effort to get there. Dominated by Sonar Qila (Golden Fort), the area is isolated but no less fascinating because of that. Take in a sunset with the sun shedding shades of golden hues across the walls for a wonderful and almost fairy-tale-like experience. A camel ride over the dunes of the Thar Desert should be on your “to do” list. Finally there is Udaipur or the Lake City. Known also as the City of Palaces this is one of my favourite places to visit and to stay – you

Fort

must experience the Lake Palace Hotel located on Lake Pichola, a true floating palace like hotel with stunning evening views across the lake to the sprawling palace and city of Udaipur. Known as the Venice of the East Udaipur is a magical place and will satisfy anyone’s travel palate. The splendid City Palace, which looms over Lake Pichola is one of the most beautiful palatial structures in Rajasthan, if not all of India. It is in fact not one structure but a complex of small and big palaces, museums and gardens constructed over centuries with a blend of cultures (Rajasthani, Mughal, Medieval, European and even Chinese). City Palace is indeed an eye-catching and awesome spectacle, particularly from the lake at sunset. Take a cruise and sit back and enjoy the sight. Rajasthan is truly something special and time must be spent there to truly appreciate its worth as a tourist destination. Each of these cities could justify a story piece of their own and I have covered only a very small part of what you must do and see to truly say you have seen Rajasthan. India is alive, it’s colourful and a lasting experience…why not go see it?

Exercise is selfish ne of the biggest hurdles clients at Vision Bundall need to overcome is the constant battle for their time and energy. Almost all of our clients are busy. Work, business, kids, travel, commitments, the list goes on. The main reason they are in this situation when they start at Vision is because for years they have put everybody else and their needs before their own. Then they justify it by thinking they have been selfless. The truly selfless thing is to be selfish about your own health. You owe it to yourself and everyone around you (especially if you are viewed as a role model by anyone) to look after you. Now I am not saying everyone on the planet should be in athletic condition and workout for hours every day, but neglecting your health and being overweight is not only bad for you… it is bad for the people around you and it affects you all. One of my clients here at the studio had a huge internal struggle with the responsibility she felt as a business owner to her employees and as a mother to her kids. As a result she would work long hours and do anything for her kids. Being a new father and business owner myself, I completely get where she is coming from. That sense of obligation is massive.

Even I have fallen into the trap of neglecting my health and fitness at times. I helped a client of mine realise she wasn’t doing anyone any favours by living this way. It really hit home for her when I asked: “What are you subconsciously teaching your children to do with their lives? Eat rubbish, not look after themselves and live an unhealthy life?”. The only way she could show them that it is important to be healthy and look after themselves is to be that example. Once she got her own fitness and health sorted, guess what happened? She became a better employer, had more energy at work and more left over when she got home for

the kids, she was a better parent, she was more confident and enjoyed her life more. She even had some energy left over for her husband. The result? The kids now love to exercise and look after themselves, they eat healthier, her husband is into it too and business is going great. Remember this… When your airplane is taxiing and the safety demonstration starts they always ask you to fix your own air mask before assisting others. You already know why that is, so do the same with your health, because nobody gets in good shape and says I wish I never did that. visionpt.com.au/studios/Bundall/

e have good news for you: There is one part of your body you can get into shape without exercising – your eyebrows. We spend hours in the gym trying to sculpt our body into a leaner shape and after one weekend, a few drinks and treats we’re not willing to write into our food diaries, we’re back to square one and our bodies are still the same shape. Thankfully there is no sweat, long hours at the gym or sore muscles required to get these two oh-so-important features on your body looking the best they ever have. Meet 3D Brow Building, your new solution to perfect, envy-worthy eyebrows. 3D Brown Building was developed in 2013 by two talented and businessminded women who realised many people were concerned about thin eyebrows, whether they had always been that way or got thinner over the years. Though treatments such as growth serums and eyebrow transplants were

available to super models, actresses or other celebrities, these women believed gorgeous eyebrows should be in everyone’s reach. London’s leading chemists spent two years to come up with this lifechanging treatment that not only meets all manufacturing standards for 2015, but also many of the European Union standards for 2018 too. These chemists call 3D Brow Building a “super” grade adhesive and this treatment is now highly sought after as the importance of beautiful eyebrows grows. Lella Hamman is proud to provide her customers with 3D Brow Building and the resulting new-found confidence through stunning eyebrows. She focuses on symmetry and if you thought your eyebrows could never be symmetrical, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Your invitation: Be our guest

Choosing the right school for your child is not an easy decision to make. Glossy brochures, prospectuses, websites and advertisements can only give you so much, and take you so far. hat they cannot do is give you a “feel” for a school; help you understand the culture of a school; or offer you an insight into how a school will care for your child. A.B. Paterson College believes this can only be achieved by visiting a school and seeing it for yourself. That’s why they are there to help. A.B. Paterson College Principal Brian Grimes invites you and your family to be their guest at the upcoming Open Day on Wednesday, 29 April from 11am-12.30pm. At the Open Day, you will be able to explore the A.B. Paterson College dynamic and see for yourselves why this school of outstanding educational opportunities and offerings may be just the place for your child to begin or continue their own learning journey. “Our classroom doors will be open to welcome you into the heart of the teaching and learning excellence taking place across the College campus in lessons, every day of every week throughout the academic year,” says Mr Grimes. The College’s students will meet you and take you on a tour of campus facilities, dropping into classrooms along the way. Experience for yourselves the students at work, and witness the dedication and expertise of the College’s professional teaching teams. Visit the brand new May Gibbs Prep Precinct, a wonderland of creativity, a play garden of magical delights and a place where children can engage in imaginative

play and make-believe theatre. In the 21st century learning environment that is the Prep-Year 3 Library, students engage in a holistic learning experience, where they may discover and rediscover learning through construction, board games and puzzles, as well as books and adventure. Discover the eLearning strategy and visit the Collaborative Learning Centre, and witness the access it gives students and staff to various new and existing technologies, essential to the acquisition of 21st century skills that will help students to become flexible and creative lifelong learners. You can also meet Principal Brian Grimes 37

and members of the senior leadership team, so you can ask those important questions and get answers. This is an exciting open-door invitation to really see the College as it operates on any given day of the year – it’s business as usual for our teachers and students. “We are looking forward to being able to welcome you, to show you around and let you experience for yourselves the many opportunities this leading Australian school can offer your children,” says Mr Grimes. “It would be a privilege to have your children entrusted into our care.” Visit abpat.qld.edu.au • P 5561 4140 April 2015

Medit ation

– the new Botox? People who meditate have a glow and look younger. While there are exceptions to every rule, there’s no denying that, on a whole, people who take time out to mediate look great for their age

Alicia Ryan

‘m a regular meditator. I love it and can’t speak highly enough of it. I find it calms my nerves, puts me to sleep, reduces stress, helps with anxiety, provides clarity, allows me to come up with really cool ideas and just gives me a space to completely relax and be in the moment. But reducing the signs of ageing? Please, do tell me more. Golden Door Health Retreat & Spa, Elysia general manager, Brigid Walsh has created the 10-minute Botox Meditation – no needles required. “People who meditate have a glow and look younger. While there are exceptions to every rule, there’s no denying that, on a whole, people who take time out to mediate look great for their age,” says Brigid. And HappyFit owner and operator Alicia Ryan agrees. She meditates for half an hour every morning and says it has many other benefits. Why do you meditate? I have suffered greatly in the past from anxiety and racing thoughts. Starting each day with meditation helps to clear my head and creates a mindfulness that flows into my entire day. What do you love about it? Meditation is my own time and space to slow things down. Being a mother, wife and small business owner sometimes mediation is the only time I have to sit on my own all day. This is absolutely crucial for everyone.

5

April 2015

How has it helped you? It helps me be a more patient mother and a more loving wife. Meditating has taught me to be in the present moment, rather than living in my head. Do you believe it works as anti-ageing treatment? Most definitely, no doubt about it. Have a look at the Dalai Lama!

Why is this? Meditation literally slows everything down; your heart rate and pulse as well as your blood pressure. We all know that when we suffer from stress we age faster - have a look at President Obama now. When we meditate we also become more awake and aware of everything around us. This leads us to more beneficial choices in other aspects of our health.

The 10-minute Botox meditation practice After seeing the effects that mediation was having on her own skin - and her clients; they looked like they had Botox – Brigid Walsh created the 10-minute Botox meditation. Here’s how to do it: l Create an environment conducive to relaxing (candles, soft music, oil burner, whatever works for you). l Begin with three slow breaths and after each breath let out a deep sigh and allow the shoulders to drop down away from the ears. Feel yourself letting go. l Continue to work with the breath, lengthening and stretching each inhalation and exhalation. l Listen to your breath to give you something to focus on.

38

l Bring your attention to your face. Imagine your breath being directed to every cell. Picture your skin smooth and soft, healthy and radiant, and allow this image to sit with you for up to five breaths. l Finally imagine a soft mist enveloping the face. The droplets are cool and hydrating. Hold this image for another five breaths. l You are left feeling energised and the skin glowing and revitalised.

Justine Clarke Marketing and Functions Manager, Sage Café Restaurant / Yellowfin Seafood Restaurant

What does your role entail? Managing the daily operation of the cafe kiosk, fuel sales and boat brokerage. It’s great getting paid to enjoy time aboard boats and even better when someone buys the vessel of their dreams. What has been your biggest achievement? Professionally gaining my International Yachtmasters was a milestone. Personally, having my son grow up to reach his full potential as a Captain and the news I am to become a grandmother. Why do you love what you do? To wake up each morning and look at nature, the wind and water conditions, wondering what the day will bring. Keep calm and sail on. How do you define success? Completing any task to the best of my ability, do my utmost and try my hardest to achieve an awesome outcome in all avenues of life. What do you do in your downtime? Just add anything to do with saltwater, a glass or two of chardonnay, planning my next artistic endeavour, chilling to music and quality time with friends and family. Favourite inspirational quote? “A woman is like a teabag, you never know her strength until she is put into hot water.” - Eleanor Roosevelt.

What does your role entail? I am responsible for the marketing, advertising campaigns, social media and functions/events for both restaurants. I am also the owner of Sensationally Sweet Events, a dessert and lolly table-styling business. What has been your biggest achievement? Raising three amazing boys while working an often-challenging, but always-rewarding, role in the restaurants for the last 10 years and following my passion to start up my own business three years ago. Why do you love what you do? I love that I never have the same day twice, my work is never mundane, and that many of the people I have met have become friends. How do you define success? Success for me is simply to be happy. I tell my children as long as they are truly happy with their lives I will consider them successful people. What do you do in your down time? I love nothing more than relaxing at home with my husband and kids, chilling out with a magazine or a good movie. Favourite inspirational quote? “Work for someone who believes in you, because when they believe in you they will invest in you.”

Cathy Hardy Managing Director/Owner, Shoetique What does your role entail? Providing impeccable service and ensuring the quality of our offering remains constant. What has been your biggest achievement? Surviving adversity. I started this business at the start of the GFC and still have a business after not only the GFC, but the introduction and major impact of the light rail system over four years that saw other major retailers in Southport close their doors. Of that, I am most proud. Why do you love what you do? Strangers walk in, they become my customers and now they are my friends. How do you define success? 1. It’s about the satisfaction of providing the best that I would expect from others. 2. What I have discovered about myself and my business is that hard work, support from others, time and passion go a long way to achieving success. What do you do in your down time? Spend time with my family and friends enjoying life. Favourite inspirational quote? “It’s always too early to quit” - Norman Vincent Peale April 2015

Sarah Hill owner Koncubine Espresso Bar What does your role entail? I’m a barista, and I also manage and serve. I’m hands on and will do whatever is needed. What has been your biggest achievement? Apart from opening my third café, I feel my biggest achievement was sailing around the world with my parents John and Anna. Why do you love what you do? I love food, and coffee especially. It is very social, which I also enjoy. I think it’s just in my blood; my parents owned restaurants since the day I was born. How do you define success? Success is knowing I wake up every morning loving what I do and doing it well. What do you do in your down time? I like to go to the Arts Centre Gold Coast to see a movie, head to Tallebudgera with my husband on a nice day for a paddle board, or just spend some time with the family. Favourite inspirational quote? “Silent gratitude isn’t very much to anyone” - Gertrude Stein 40

MEATLESS MEATBALLS Serves 4

INGREDIENTS • 5 medium to large carrots, finely grated • 180g packet organic goats or cows feta, crumbled • 1 organic egg • 1 tsp each of dried oregano, basil, thyme and garlic powder • ¼ onion, diced as finely as possible • 2-3 tsp coconut flour* • Salt to taste METHOD: Place the finely grated carrot and egg in a blender and pulse until slightly mushy. Transfer to a bowl, add all other ingredients, adding one teaspoon at a time of coconut flour until you have a nice consistency for rolling balls. Alternatively use a food processor to bring everything together, pulsing to get the right consistency. Line a tray with baking paper. Roll mixture into even size balls. Drizzle with olive or coconut oil and bake at 180C until golden and crisp on the outside, and soft in the middle. Serving suggestion: Serve with tomato pasta sauce, on top of salad for lunchbox munchies, or as festive food accompanied with a dip for a wholesome celebration. You can use up carrot pulp from juicing in place of grated carrots if you wish. You will not need to blend the pulp. *Add 1/3 cup of wholegrain breadcrumbs, almond meal, crushed macadamia nuts or walnuts, or enough to get the right consistency to roll into balls if you cannot find coconut flour.

FRUITY ESKIMO PIE

Serves: 10 - 12

INGREDIENTS For the base: • ½ cup desiccated coconut • 1½ cups raw macadamias, almonds or cashews • ¼ cup maple syrup, or a handful of dates to sweeten to taste • ¼ cup coconut oil • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract, paste or pod For the filling: • 1 cup soaked cashews • ¼ cup coconut oil • 2/3 cup coconut cream or plain organic yogurt • 2-3 cups chopped fruit - any berry or mango and pineapple work well • 1 lime or lemon, juice and zest • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract • Splash of maple syrup, to taste

METHOD Place base ingredients in a food processor and process to a smooth crust. Press into an oiled or lined cake tin or muffin tray. Blend filling ingredients in a high-power blender until really smooth and creamy. Start with 2 cups of fruit and add more if desired. Add the citrus juice and zest to taste, and sweeten with a little syrup if needed. Pour on top of base. Set pie in the freezer before slicing and serving. Serving suggestions: Use coconut cream for a dairy-free creamy coconut background flavour, or yogurt for a fruity, frozen yogurt taste. Layer different fruit flavours for a colourful effect. Best eaten straight from the freezer!

DINING with Chris Mcleay

ou don’t have to travel overseas to savour the flavours of France and Italy. Situated at the corner of Tedder and Peak avenues in the uber-trendy Main Beach precinct is Provincial Restaurant and Bar. Owner of the eatery Damir follows the philosophy of fresh produce used creatively, while capturing the flavours of Southern France and Northern Tuscany. The wine menu is of particular importance at Provincial. The who’s who of Australian vineyards are well represented, alongside a number of imported delights from Europe and New Zealand. Damir chooses to feature boutique Australian wines in his restaurant, and one that has become a regular diners’ favourite is the Light & Finnis Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2013, which is produced in a limited run of roughly 512 cases annually. After perusing the wine menu, my lunch companion and I took a seat under the expansive undercover alfresco area; a perfect place for people watching. The decor is French brasserie with the black-and-white checkered tiled floors that exude a rustic style and the well-spaced tables and chairs are comfortable with splashes of colour. The bar area is well stocked and is situated at the rear of the restaurant. The menu combines a clever use of Italian fresh herbs with the more traditional techniques of the French-style of cookery in a way that will excite all palates and tastes. To start we chose the Trio of Dips served with oil-brushed char-grilled mountain bread April 2015

r u o v a l e f h t r Savou ($11.90). The bread arrived with traditional basil pesto, a roasted pumpkin dip and a silky smooth poached chicken spread. All three dips were delightful, in particular the unexpected texture and creamy flavour of the poached chicken. As we enjoyed the breads, we ordered our entrée course. The Beef Carpaccio served with shaved crunchy radish, brined Jerusalem artichokes and scorched baby onions ($17.50) was a great choice as a light starter for a warm Wednesday afternoon. The wafer-thin beef was seasoned well with the artichoke and onions offering a balance of earthy flavours. Next to arrive was the Slow Roasted Pork Belly with crispy skin, candied apple and caramelised balsamic ($15.90). The meat was pull-apart perfect and the sweetness of the candied apple was a superb contrast to the tart flavour of the balsamic reduction. The test for a great pork belly dish has always been the crispiness of the skin, and Provincial passed with flying colours. The crackling was crisp and well seasoned. Just the way I like it. For main course we chose the Pesto Chicken Risotto served with pancetta, field mushrooms, basil pesto and topped with freshly grated parmesan ($25.90). The chicken was sautéed and slow cooked in with the rice, which took on a lot of the flavour from the chicken stock. The rice 44

was cooked with just the right amount of crunch that identifies it as a well-cooked risotto. Too soft and it can be gluggy. The mushrooms added moisture to the dish, and even though a generous portion size, we thoroughly enjoyed it to our last mouthful. The dessert menu has more of a French influence and hosts a list of quintessential favourites. H LEO July 22 – Aug 23 You may have been thinking lately about seeking new horizons or exploring options in your immediate locale. The first two weeks of April could bring unexpected events, new opportunities and a need for decisions that encourage progress. The end result may well be a move in a new direction, though you’ll still need to tackle any obligations or responsibilities that are ongoing. H Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 A practical focus this month can prevent impulsive moves regarding your financial affairs. Unexpected events or new information around April 5 might see you scrambling to sort things out in a hurry. However, you’ll make the best decision if you get all the facts first. Later in April, a new associate may be of great help regarding an important personal ambition. H Libra Sept 22 – Oct 23 You may have had plans on hold for a while and in order to see them through you need to let go, Libra. Finding yourself at a crossroads this month will help you to release aspects of the past and enable you to get back on track. In addition, the New Moon on April 18 can be helpful for collaborating on a project or melting the ice concerning someone you are drawn to. H Scorpio Oct 23 – Nov 22 Don’t give yourself too much to do during the first two weeks of April, as a disruption to your routines might mean changes are necessary, some of which could turn out to be quite radical. Your social life can buck up too as Mars, and later the Sun in Taurus, encourage you to develop new connections and reach out. You may find a more go-getting attitude around relationships.

H Aries March 20 –April 19 The way you say things this month is important and you’ll find yourself needing to choose your words carefully. The Lunar Eclipse on April 5 may be one of those times, as some key relationships could be tested. However, the New Moon in your sign on April 18 also paves the way for a fresh start, and it seems a more down-to-earth one at that.

H Taurus April 20 – May 21 Mars newly arriving in your sign can see you ready to put effort into the development and growth of ideas and projects. Just make sure you pace yourself during the first week to keep your energy levels up. Once the Sun eases into your sign on April 20, your strength and vitality will soar, leaving you ready for almost any challenge. H Gemini May 21 – June 21 A romantic attraction may appear out of the blue around the time of the Eclipse on April 5. If you find yourself falling head over heels, remember to hold back a little as something you find out later may help you make a more informed decision. Socially, there are plenty of opportunities for making new connections, some of which could prove to be very helpful. H Cancer June 21 – July 22 Your ambitious ideas may conflict with home and family affairs in the first week of the month, especially if an opportunity comes your way that appears too good to miss. In this respect, your network of friends can be great to turn to for support. Meanwhile, the New Moon on April 18 encourages you to aim high in order to achieve your goals.

H Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 22 Changes within your existing circle of friends or the clubs or groups you’re a member of could entice you to explore other opportunities or to consider ideas for entertainment and fun you might not have thought about previously. As a result, new doors can spring open, enhancing the chance for greater sociability as well as other golden opportunities. H Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20 A combative energy around April 5 can see you thrashing out ideas and resolving conflicts with key individuals. The result could transform your plans for the future and your ideas about what’s best for you and those closest to you. If all this sounds like hard work, ensure you take time out for life’s pleasures, Capricorn. H Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19 Whatever seemed set in stone could be subject to change, as newer and more appealing ideas come into view. A shake-up of your best and brightest plans might result in new opportunities bringing you more income and friends. Venus’s move into Gemini can bring lively social and dating options your way too. H Pisces Febr 19 – March 20 Getting to grips with your finances can help you know where you stand and give you greater control and a sense of security. If you have any pressing issues that need tackling, it will be best to do it sooner rather than later, for procrastinating will only add stress. This can also be an excellent month for enhancing your social network and for promoting your talents or a small business.

LAST WORD

with Sarah Blinco

st acking it

Seriously

id you catch (or perhaps even Tweet about) #capegate? That is, Madonna’s cringeworthy fall at this year’s Brit Music Awards? Of course you did because thanks to our interactive age it wasn’t just the mere 5.8 million UK viewers who witnessed the topple off the stage, but it was all over Facebook… and Instagram, Vine, SnapChat – you name it, poor old Madge was gracing it and being shared shared shared the world over. Love or hate her, it’s fair to say she handled the situation like a pro getting back up and moving forward (after having her cape yanked backwards causing a fall down a flight of stairs, ouch!); then later being a good sport with her own message on Instagram, “Thanks for your good wishes! I’m fine! #livingforlove”. Still, this is a really embarrassing thing to have happen. I presume a large part of her wanted to just curl into a ball and I’m sure she will probably steer clear of cameras for a little while to come. A couple of years back I had a seriously hideous stack too.It all began with a pair of shoes that really didn’t work for me, but they were ohso pretty. Our love affair came to an abrupt end when I finally (after many near misses, mind you) ended up head smashed on to concrete; short skirt and all, and in front of people who, let’s just say, I really didn’t want to have that experience in the presence of. It was really bad and I wasn’t #livingforlove that particular night (or week… or month). On reflection, that fall of mine represents a period where I made some other bad decisions. That is, on top of persisting with wearing shoes that threatened to end an outing with a broken April 2015

leg, not to mention one side of my face looking like I’d been in a brawl (you should have seen the other guy, though!). That fall became a metaphor for crushed confidence. I’d lost my composure, totally embarrassed myself, became disconnected and ended up, literally, “lying on the cold hard ground” (thanks for the pertinent lyric, Taylor Swift). I’m not alone in seriously stacking it – both literally and figuratively. I’m sure you appreciate the feeling of wanting to hibernate for a solid decade while everyone forgets your mishap, whether it happened at home, in the boardroom, on the street or centre stage. Generally we don’t have 10 years to hide away following an embarrassing situation. In fact, we usually don’t even have a day. Confidencecrushing events usually have to be faced head on before there’s an opportunity to slink away and feel terribly sorry for ourselves. The thing to remember, however, is that everyone has seriously stacked it at least once in their lives. Once if they’re lucky! It’s not a matter of if, but how and when. What’s your story and what did you learn? Here’s what I’ve garnered about rebuilding confidence and moving forward after taking a giant fall… Perhaps the hardest to do, but most important, is to accept and acknowledge – without judgement – all feelings you’re experiencing, whether they be shame, anger or disappointment. Simply feel and allow, for example, “I screwed up my speech and I’m embarrassed”. End the thought right there and work to move on. The F word is important. “Forgive” yourself; 50

let go of resentment or shame – it’s a serious waste of your precious time. Use the same language when talking to yourself as you would when counselling a best friend who is suffering a crisis of confidence. While it might seem clichéd, in my experience it’s true that we need to try and find the silver lining in a bad situation - and be grateful for it. Even the biggest trip-ups are attached to an upside or lesson. Write down every positive, no matter how small, and focus on those elements. Love is the answer, as they say, so spend time with people who cherish you just the way you are and who are good at reminding you that you’re perfect. Create a go-to confidence building ritual, like a walk by the ocean with Shake It Off on repeat (or, insert favourite up-beat song here - and yes, I’m a proud Swifty … moving on). Dance around in your favourite sexy dress, take 20 to view a motivating TED talk, meditate or write down affirmations and repeat them while looking in the mirror – do whatever it is that raises you nearer to your “happy place”. Find what’s right for you and implement it every day because this tip doesn’t just apply when the chips are down. Such a practice means you’ve got somewhere to begin when confidence has taken a knock, like those moments when you’ve tripped over your cape, words or high heels. If nothing else, Google #capegate and remember you’re in good company. Do you have advice to add on how to recover from a serious life stack? We’d love to hear from you – share with us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
