was busying myself getting ready for an event the other week with a very dear friend — who I had known since those traditionally awkward pre-teen years — and I fondly recalled all those times we had preened and prepared ourselves for a night out before. Granted, those times had involved more casual and age-appropriate venues, but the process was the same. Well, except for a few things… There was still fussing over what we were going to wear (I’d like to think my younger self would be impressed with the better track record of fashion faux pas in her future), but we were more decisive — the clothes worked for us, not the other way around. As for makeup? It actually matched our skin tones! I’ve long since come to the conclusion there was no point trying to ‘hide’ my freckles (with so many, my foundation would need to be a centimetre thick not to see them). The finishing touches and accessories also showed a change; they were unique to us, represented different moments in our lives and were chosen because they were ‘us’ not because it was what everyone wore.

Of course, this comes with growing up and being more comfortable in your own skin, but sometimes we still need to be reminded. While we can strive to love ourselves, it’s something we all grapple with daily whilst being confronted with a deluge of what ‘perfect’ is. But ‘perfection’ is in the imperfections and you are who you are. Just like when it comes to natural beauty, I take a cheetah’s approach: I don’t try to change my spots.

few weeks ago, I organised a hen’s party for a good friend of mine. Dinner, drinks and shenanigans that are sworn to secrecy; what happens on the Gold Coast stays on the Gold Coast. It started out as a lovely night of laughter, cocktails and

girly chitchat. Then halfway through dinner, without so much as a trigger warning, the conversation went straight down a self-judgemental gutter. I was horrified. The girls all had something negative to say about themselves, from their chubby ankles to their uneven skin tone and even the frizzy texture of their hair. And on cue, each of us jumped in to knock back each comment as ridiculous. It was like watching a game of tennis with a ball filled with self-criticism. Actually, maybe a little more like ping pong — tennis has way too much running, and you can’t hold a martini glass and bat the ball at the same time (or is it ‘hit’ the ball? Well, whatever one does with a tennis racquet). It fast became a fierce competition of who had the most unfortunate body, face, hair, skin, elbows and so forth. Sitting in front of me were a bunch of beautiful, intelligent, sweet-hearted women, all ‘hating’ on themselves. I was quickly developing whiplash watching the proverbial ball fly back and forth. Sitting in polite silence — like a well-behaved spectator does - I was waiting for an umpire to call out game, set, match! It upset me that we, as women, find it okay to knock ourselves off our own perch. Damn it girls! We need to admire ourselves in the mirror and find things that we like, rather than things that could do with a little improvement. No one is perfect and we just need to learn that we are beautiful exactly as we are. Full of martinis and as nominated team leader of the night (aka the umpire), I could not let this hogwash continue any further, I had had enough, and the night was still young… So I pulled out my whistle and blew it — hard! Time out — I am creating a new rule. Any person who ‘doth speaketh’ against themselves shall buy the next round of exceedingly expensive cocktails. I had called ‘match’ on the game. The tennis court fell into a hush… and then just like that, the party got started again. The girls forgot about their pimples, ugly toes, chubby bits and frizzy hair and just had fun — like girls are supposed to! Cyndi Lauper once sang that, ‘girls just wanna have fun’… and I just wanna have another martini please!

Despite negative reactions from family, you quickly move in together and secretly elope. When cracks start to show, your family begin investigating him and you discover you’re living with a stranger. What happens next will change your and your family’s lives forever. This is the true story behind Netflix’s new hit show Dirty John.Though don’t assume this type of cautionary tale is relegated purely to the casting rooms of Hollywood, it’s happening right here in the Gold Coast as you’re reading this… Case studies: The ideal soulmate gone wrong A 36-year-old woman with a young daughter was ready to put herself out there again after the passing of her beloved husband. She is a Christian and a family-minded individual who wished to find the same values in a potential partner. While online, she came across the ideal profile of a seemingly promising man: it said he’s a Christian and described him as family orientated. Her lovely profile soon caught the man’s attention, and they started dating. After a year the daughter made known this man's sexual advances, and once everything had been uncovered, the woman realised the man had been grooming her to get near the daughter. He had made his profile match even more closely what she was wanting before he contacted her. Shocked that the man – who was meant to be a pillar of the community – would do such an awful thing, and heart-broken she’d let this monster into their home, the woman blamed herself and stopped dating. It wasn’t her fault: she was a victim of a well-practiced predator. The nasty surprise After meeting over a dating app, a couple in their late 30s have officially passed the year anniversary mark of their relationship.They’ve been talking about getting engaged and openly plan for their future together. At 38 the woman falls pregnant, and excitedly announces it to the man.The man is less then pleased and asks her to have an abortion.Turns out he’s got three kids and a wife.This isn’t sheer naivety on the victim’s part, this is a premeditated and faultless web of lies, created by an emotional manipulator, designed to trap. So now you’re suitably engrossed in the mind-games of fraudsters and emotional manipulators, we examine Linda’s advice on how to avoid falling prey to the unimaginable. Judging profiles The thing about online dating is that you’re only seeing what’s being presented to you. Everyone wants to showcase the best profile (whether it’s real or not). Here are some signs that the profile you are looking at is most probably not genuine: • There’s only one photo: they’ve put up a really fabulous profile photo, but there’s only one. • Their profile has no information: this can mean they have a low level of commitment to the dating process. Committed people will be detailed about themselves. If you’re looking at an online dating profile, make sure they have at least filled in the basics and not just with one word. • Their social connections are very limited: okay, some people don’t have that many Facebook friends or Instagram followers. But if your potential date only has five Facebook friends and 10 Instagram followers who are mostly ‘buy follower’ accounts, you should be very concerned.This could mean that they’ve set up a separate account, so you won’t be able to see what their real-life is like, or worse, impersonating someone else. Keeping safe on your date There’s always that risk when meeting a complete stranger. So, if you are heading out to meet someone none of your family and friends personally know, make sure you do these things: • Tell someone about your plans: make sure you tell your family and/or friends about your date.This includes who you’re seeing and where you’re heading. At least one person should know where you are at all times. • Stay with the crowds: pick a public spot for your first date, like a restaurant or bar where there will be people to assist you should you feel uncomfortable. • Use safety apps: apps like Find My Friends can be really helpful when meeting someone you don’t know.Turn it on and let your friends see your movements. • Show that someone knows where you are: just when you see your new date, you can either make a real phone call or fake one. Say something like,“Oh, yup, so-and-so is here. We’re going to have dinner at this restaurant called ______.” Letting your new date know that someone else knows your movement is important. 13
Moving too fast The problem these days with online is we are suspicious and looking for the ‘why nots’ rather than the ‘why tos’. But they say love is blind. And unfortunately, there is some truth to that. When we are in love, we tend to only focus on the positive side of things and our guard comes down. It’s not wrong to want to spend more time with someone. Having the desire to move in and live with someone you are dating is natural. But there are things that you will need to pay attention to like tenancy agreements, purchasing things for the home, and managing your finances. Tenancy agreements: if you’re renting together, put both names on the lease so that in the event that a break up happens, no one is left in a lurch. Purchasing items for the home: despite your best intentions to share things with your new partner, hold on. In the early stages, you might want to buy things individually first so that if a separation does happen, you will not be fighting for that TV or bed. Managing your finances: when the relationship is still new, it’s beneficial to keep separate banking accounts.You can still share the responsibility of paying bills (your share of electricity, water, gas) but you should ultimately have full control over your savings. Having backup: always have a Plan B should your relationship not work the way you thought it would. Will you have money for a new security deposit? Do you have enough for the mover or cleaner? These are the things that many people only think about at the end of a relationship. Avoiding emotional manipulators In my 25 years as a relationship expert I hear a lot of reasons why relationships break down. When I hear someone is overly jealous, I know they can potentially be manipulative as well. Although someone seeming protective can be flattering at the start, when it becomes more intense, it’s scary and possessive. Do they see interactions you have with others as being unnecessary? Are they insecure and paranoid? Do you end up spending less time with friends or even cut communication with certain people because your partner feels uncomfortable with you spending time away from him? Do you find yourself more isolated? If you answer yes, you might have an emotionally abusive partner. Another sign to look at is if they make you doubt yourself and feel like you are unworthy. Does your partner make you feel less confident about yourself? Are you often compared to their past exes? Are you always belittled for every comment you make or opinion you give? Controlling people often want you to feel grateful that you are in a relationship with them.They will say things that will make you feel less confident, undesirable and unwanted. It’s usually done subtly but consistently. I think the biggest mistake people make is trusting someone you barely know. Con men and women can be so charming and cunning these days that they know how to manipulate their victims. No matter how genuine someone sounds, the minute they are asking you for your credit card details, banking details or even your TFN, that should raise alarm bells. Always listen to your gut. If a new love interest says they are trying to pay for something, but their credit card isn’t working and needs to use yours, try and get out of it by saying your card has reached its limit. If a new partner suddenly tells you an incredible sob story that ends up with them needing a large sum of money, be prepared to run for the hills. Genuine partners will never want to start a new relationship with a great burden. More often than not, they will not tell you about their financial hardship until they are really comfortable with you. When someone is genuine, you’ll know.The first test is to see if they would tell you their last name. If they tell you their last name, there’s hope that this is a genuine date. Someone who tells you their last name knows that you will be doing some research about them before meeting up. And a genuine date will not have a problem with that as they want you to feel comfortable about meeting them in person. Another important thing to look at is if they show genuine interest in your life and listen attentively when you are speaking. If they do, that’s a great start. Watch then if they reciprocate. If they then tell you something about themselves, it’s a positive sign. But if they always switch things and you end up only talking about yourself, think again. The other characteristic to look at is the direction of the conversation. If at every turn of a sentence, they are leading you to the bedroom, they might be interested in nothing more than sex.Those who have been dating on unmonitored apps will have come across this: chats that start in an innocent way but then take a drastic turn. At the end of the day, it’s all about the intentions and usually, they show. So, Get it girls, always remember to take care of yourself and your heart. Sometimes baddies don’t look like villains. Chapter one: Instagram Stories for beginners

Instagram Stories are the little red ring that circles your friend’s Instagram display picture. the opportunity to be more interactive with what you post. You can even add interactive polls to your story, where people can vote for what you should order for dessert or what you should wear out that night (if you’re game enough to ask!). Your friends can reply to your story via Emoji stickers, and others can even ask questions. Responding is optional of course you are busy living your best life after all.
Chapter two: The Business Edition
Not so excited about sharing the intricate details of your personal life with the world? That’s okay, because stories are great for promoting business highlights too! Have a new sale happening in store and you need to promote it quickly? Instagram Stories are the perfect place to do so. You can share an image of your sale sign, add the date and time of the sale in your caption and post a poll asking your followers,‘Who’s coming to our biggest sale of the year?’ and straight away you have an idea of how many people are interested in the sale, who is actually coming and how many people your story has reached. For businesses, stories are also great for advertising and promoting new products. This is because not all followers may have seen that picture you posted at 3am yesterday morning about the last minute warehouse sale you’re holding today but if you post it on your story, you can see exactly how many people have seen it; and while you’re there can add a few videos of what items people can expect to see and what type of bargains they can rack up. 14

For those a little bit more experienced in the world of Instagram, taking your story to the next level is possible and it has never been easier to make your life look so, well, beautiful! When you arrive at your death, what will you wish you had done differently? Get it’s Hayley Bogaard explores our most common regrets want you to close your eyes. Let your life go for just a moment. Now imagine you’re at your own funeral. It’s a little morbid, I know, but stay with me. You move through the congregation of people. You find your best friend from high school. She’s wearing dark sunglasses but you can see that she’s been crying. Your heart drops when you realise you never told her how beautiful she truly is. You keep moving and spot a group of friends from your last job and a small lump of guilt rises in your throat. The last time they asked you out for drinks you blew them off. You wish you hadn’t. You move towards the front of the group, admiring the beautiful white peonies that adorn the venue; your favourite flower. Your mum always knew. And she stands just off to the side, lost in memories of her little girl. If only you could have had one more cooking lesson by her side. And then you spot your partner, hand in hand with your children. He is quiet, politely talking to one of your aunts. You can see he is broken. His face is flushed but he hides it for your children’s sake. They are silent, taking in the scene around them. Their faces are stained with rivers of tears. Your stomach drops. You should have tucked them into bed more often, rather than stayed late in the office. You should have written a love letter to your husband, rather than another email to your boss. Regret is a bitter pill to swallow. We all have them. But we can learn from those that have walked this dark path before us, so when we do arrive at our own funeral it is late, in love and perhaps just a little drunk.

I wish I hadn’t worked so hard This is one of the most common regrets expressed by those facing their death. Parents regret missing their children’s youth, caught on the treadmill of office life. Missed dinners, soccer games and ballet concerts, all for the pursuit of a deadline. Others just miss life in general. A holiday with friends, your cousin's wedding. In between meetings, emails, deadlines and invoices, they forget to just live. So close your laptop; your emails can wait. Your life won’t. I wish I had been more true to myself Another common regret is not living authentically. Rather than chase dreams and aspirations, we fall far too easily into the trappings of pleasing others. We studied the degree our parents wanted, we dressed in trends rather than the style we truly loved, we married the wrong person because we felt we had to. Embrace who you are, because when you arrive at the pearly gates, that’s all you have. Wear what you want, chase the career you dream of, love who you love. People are the most valuable investment we will ever make.They deserve our time, energy and effort. A lunch with your best friend, a call to a work colleague, a quick text message to remind someone you’re thinking of them. When you’re walking through the crowd at your own funeral, you should be looking around at the familiar faces with gratefulness and loving memories, not regrets.

t’s Thursday and you’re looking forward to something special on the weekend. Oh, yes, it’s that date you’ve pencilled in. So, you head down to the shops and get that new outfit you’ve been eyeing. Come date night, you throw on that stylish ensemble, spritz on that sexy scent and you’re off to impress your date. But what happens next? Your date doesn’t seem engaged and the mood fizzles out like old Kombucha. You feel completely let down. What went wrong? Most of the time when people prepare themselves for a date, they tend to only focus on how they look. Yes, of course it’s important to look presentable and smell good. After all, you do want to make that good first impression. But what many forget is that being presentable is not just about the physical. The biggest turnoff on a date Confidence is sexy. After having spoken to more than 10,000 clients, I can say that the biggest turnoff on a date is not having confidence. You can be this well-dressed person with perfect hair and clean white teeth but if there’s an indication that you have low confidence, your date can sniff it out. By that time, the chances of getting a second date is almost zero to none. This is also supported by research. According to Buunk, Dijkstra, Fetchenhauer, and Kenrick, 2002, men and women rate confidence as a very attractive trait in a potential partner. Signs of a less confident date Sometimes our nerves can get the better of us and it can show. These things can send a signal to your date that you are not feeling confident. • You’re always checking your phone Yes, it’s obvious. Checking your phone too often can make you seem like you are avoiding eye contact or even worse, you’re not interested. Keep your phone in your bag or pocket. You can always check your messages when you excuse yourself to go to the restroom at the end of dinner. • Touching your hair too much For ladies, twirling with your hair is fine as it does give off a playful vibe. hands. For men, constantly touching hair around the ear will show you are feeling the jitters. Instead, keep one hand on the stem of your glass and the other gently placed on the table or on your lap, if you’re not in the middle of food. Things you can do to feel confident on a first date Look, when it comes to dating, even the most confident people can find themselves feeling insecure and nervous. Feeling the jitters is perfectly fine. It just means that the date matters to you. But remember, if you aren't going to have confidence in yourself, why would anyone else? Don’t worry about whether they like you Stop worrying about whether your date will like you and you will feel like all the weight has been taken off your shoulders. You need to have enough sense of your own value to realise that you are awesome. And your value is not something that others determine. You do. Focus on the moment, not the outcome Pay attention to your date and show that you care about what they are saying. That really helps to get you focused on the moment rather than worrying about how the night will end. Be attentive, ask some questions, add your own experience/memories and let your date learn more about you. Take it easy. Feel comfortable While picking out a great outfit is important to create that positive first impression, feeling comfortable is crucial. A stylish pair of shoes will not do you any favours if you end up walking uncomfortably throughout your date. Celebrate what’s special about you The truth is, no one is perfect. And no matter how you may struggle with certain things about yourself, remember that you have positive qualities you should acknowledge and celebrate. What makes you a great person? Things like having a kind heart, having a great sense of humour and being a great listener are wonderful qualities to have. am a strong believer in standing up for what I believe in and always speaking my truth. I want to constantly learn about myself and why I function the way I function, and why other people do the things they do too. I love to see other women find their strengths and find love for themselves through a better understanding of why they do and feel the things they do mentally and physically. I recently found myself in a situation with a person who came into my life that made me feel wonderful.They spoke to me like I was important, and they learnt about every detail of how I function.They were thoughtful, they made the effort to put me on a pedestal, they learnt what my strong points were, what my weaknesses were, and they wanted to spend all their time with me.This felt amazing and had me on a high that someone would have this much passion and care this much about me. This made me want to go out of my way for this person, praise them, make them a high priority in my life because I like to look after others especially when they look after me. I remember in the beginning I had a moment where I questioned,“Is this is too good to be true?” I should have followed my gut instincts. Gradually this wonderful feeling began to fade, and all of the initial praise, adoration and effort dropped away. Instances would come up where I would be manipulated into being wrong even when I knew I was right or if I had a valid opinion.They stopped April 2019
me from having a voice with subtle manipulation techniques, which took time to notice. Very small disagreements were made to be more extreme because this kind of person dwells in extremes. I would be spoken to almost like a parent to a child. Each disagreement was to point out my wrong doing, to get me to admit I did wrong and not to stick up for myself, so they had the ultimate control.There was no room for compromise. These moments became more prominent and more dramatic.The effort stopped being made to make me feel good.That person began to play the victim.They made big deals over things as if they couldn’t cope. When they started to turn situations into things more extreme than necessary, I knew something was not right. All of my so-called weaknesses were called out, my efforts to compromise were shut down and I was told they couldn’t be with someone like that constantly. When I spoke with close friends, family and even a professional openly to get advice on what I was experiencing I was told these signs were major red flags and I should remove myself as soon as possible. So, I tried my best to calmly remove myself from the situation and end things. Sadly, I was treated to the silent treatment and ignored, which is their form of punishment for disobeying.They do this so they feel they still have control over you. Unfortunately, this kind of person will never admit they did any of this nor will they ever take blame for any wrong doing. 20
I was the victim of a manipulator and I was being abused emotionally.This person was gas lighting or love bombing me.This person is commonly known as someone with narcissistic personality disorder.These kind of people can be present in relationships, friendships and in workplaces. I don’t blame this person nor do I hold onto any anger toward them as much as they hurt me. Most of the time people like this grow up this way and learn how to get things they want when they are told “no” as a child.The most important thing I did for myself in this situation was put myself first when I wasn’t getting treated properly. I was very lucky that I saw the signs early and I took myself out of the situation when I could. Now I feel strong that I took back my control and I am now more aware of this kind of behavior. I always take everything I go through in life as learning whether it’s a good or bad circumstance.The most important thing I did was question things when they didn't feel right and eventually follow my gut feeling. No one ever deserves to be someone’s puppet, to be abused in any form or to be manipulated. Stand up for yourself when you believe you are right. When things don’t quite feel right question it, talk to a professional, get advice from friends, do your research.The most important thing you can do is detach yourself from these kind of people, even if it’s hard.

Gold Coast's Medical State
Get it’s Kathleen Loxton talks to a few of the Gold Coast’s leading specialists about the ground-breaking technology, research, and health issues affecting us all
hronic pain and eating disorders In the area of research looking into eating disorders and chronic pain, important trials are taking place, and studies are being put forward from the Gold Coast's sun-kissed shores; providing vital findings in these fields of research and garnering greater medical understanding globally. According to Associate Professor of Psychology at Bond University, Dr Peta Stapleton, these developments give medical professionals help aiding the approximately one in four adults worldwide that suffer from chronic pain, and the roughly 70 million sufferers of eating disorders. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or tapping — described by the Australian Tapping Institute as,“… a psychological acupressure technique…" — has been a focus of research for Peta, especially concerning chronic pain, and eating disorders. Peta explained,“Tapping has been around for about 40 years but over the last decade, especially in the past five years, emphasis and research on this technique has escalated. In the last few years there has been 48 randomized controlled trials of tapping and 40 outcome studies of tapping — 98 per cent of those 88 studies show positive results.” This research is catching on globally at a rapid rate. Peta described,“In 2017, the U.S. Veterans Administration approved EFT as a ‘generally safe therapy’ for their war veterans. Furthermore, in December 2018, an arm of the UK government, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), acknowledged that there was enough research that meets their inclusion criteria for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) treatment.This is the first time that EFT has been acknowledged in any UK government guideline, signifying that there is an initial and promising evidence base, worthy of government-funded further research. Again, recently, back in 2018 EFT was recognised as a ‘prescribed psychotherapy’ in Ontario, Canada, for their registered psychotherapists, and all are allowed to use it.” There was an EFT trial at Bond University in early March this year, which targeted stress hormones, specifically cortisol levels, to show subjects what actually happens through the process of tapping (the findings will be presented at the Mind Heart Connect Conference this May on the Gold Coast).The team will be applying for an international research grant come June, which is going to target chronic pain sufferers.“That’s what we’ll be doing for the next five years: giving them biological evidence.The next thing we’re focused on is hopefully helping those cases where medication doesn’t help — it goes to show their treatments need something more. If all goes well, we’ll have a site in Florida, America, too!” says Peta. When it comes to misconceptions about eating disorders, and chronic pain, Peta spoke of the lack of realisation regarding the prevalence of eating disorders and the common belief that chronic pain isn’t ‘real’. Peta recalled a shocked reaction, even from well-informed students, about the statistics of eating disorders compared to more widely publicised April 2019
medical issues. What’s more, a staggering 82 per cent of chronic pain sufferers Peta surveyed expressed the stigma they experienced from health professionals; instead they preferred to go off to a pharmacy just to get some relief (not always the best solution, Peta noted).This is what the outcomes of these investigations and research also hopes to change. Metabolic health and chronic conditions We see it all the time on the news; health reports and new diets that promise a healthier life or provide shock findings about everyday food items. It’s an ongoing and important global discussion about health and personal, government and corporate responsibility. Gold Coast’s renowned IVF Specialist, Gynaecologist, Obstetrician, and Nutritionist, Dr Tim O’Dowd, spoke to Get it about the current status and climate surrounding metabolic health – which concerns health aspects including weight, as well as sugar dietary fats and cholesterol levels – and chronic health conditions.“All health authorities promote the need for healthy weight, but we certainly don’t agree on how to achieve that,” said Tim.‘’It is a fact that being overweight is associated with a range of chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, some cancers, fatty liver disease, and Alzheimer’s dementia,” he added. It was clear that the while many of us try to make the right choices for our health, it is understandably a challenging business.“Gold Coast people are interested in doing the right thing for their health through nutrition. Unfortunately, we are bombarded with confusing advice in the media, even from health professionals. Nutrition advice can come from sources with differing motivations!” explained Tim. It seems some studies focussing on specific foods and prevalence of diseases in correlation should be examined in context.‘’Conclusions and subsequent advice drawn from certain epidemiologic studies are often promoted as good evidence. However, vested interests with ideology or profit in mind will issue press releases to promote their agenda, which often exaggerates their findings,’’ Tim reasoned. Tim went on to describe how for 50 years we have been advised that carbohydrates should constitute 55 to 65 per cent of our daily intake, while fat-based products should be restricted. During this time the incidence of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic health conditions has risen dramatically. For those wanting to lose weight and manage certain conditions, Tim highlighted the following, ‘’There are three main ways to lose weight: firstly, bariatric surgery for major obesity; secondly, calorie restriction, when a major reduction in energy giving food is ingested over weeks or months; and finally, selective carbohydrate restriction, when one restricts sugars and products with added sugar, refined and processed foods, and the inflammation causing seed oils. For those with certain chronic health conditions, more intense carbohydrate restriction will be required and beneficial. All three are now recognised by leading 22

For example, Tim described,“There is strong evidence that fats have never been shown to have a significant deleterious (or damaging) effect on long term health, and that type 2 diabetes can be put into remission and sustained with selective carbohydrate restriction (low carbketo nutrition).” ‘’My hope is that all of our Gold Coast doctors and other health care professionals are brought up to date with these nutrition facts. Gold Coasters need to be able to rely on the health care professionals correctly understanding and interpreting the nutrition science with all its failings and biases, so as to give genuine options to their patients,” concluded Tim. Regenerative and integrative medicine There has been a surge of world-wide discussion in the medical field about regenerative and integrative medicine, and these pioneering approaches are being implemented right here on the Gold Coast. We spoke to Medical Director of MasterCell Centre of Excellence, Dr Soraya Felix, concerning these. ‘’Regenerative medicine is the use of cellular engineering and molecular biology to regenerate healing in cells, tissues and organs. Allowing the body to naturally restore and maintain superior function,’’ explained Dr Felix. The cellular treatment areas being investigated by Dr Felix and her team include neurological, autoimmune, orthopaedic, and degenerative. What this hopes to achieve is to allow the body to make more of the stem cells that are involved in the function of particular body parts. For example, the neurological disorders that are being focussed on are multiple sclerosis, dementia, and other neurological degenerative disorders. The treatment aim is to stimulate natural regeneration of damaged cells by these conditions. The tent is placed over the bed with the patient inside during the infrared radiation, with their head outside the tent.The infrared radiation is able to penetrate the skin to a depth where the blood can absorb the heat and spread it throughout the tissue and organs.Their body’s core temperature is safely heated within one to two hours until the desired temperature is reached. Let’s take a closer look at three of the common reasons for not getting vaccinated… and why they are complete and utter crap. Vaccination causes autism Despite the fact that this theory has been disproved over and over again, it just will not fall silent. While autism rates in developing countries have risen since the introduction of vaccines, there have been multiple studies proving that there is no link between the two. This increase is more likely correlated to an increase in diagnostic information or changing definitions of autism. In fact, the medical paper that sparked the fear that vaccinations caused autism, has since been revealed to be fraudulent. In 1998, gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield, MD, published a study that claimed to have found evidence of children who had exhibited symptoms of autism after receiving the MMR vaccination.The reaction to the publication was immediate and sensational.The media jumped on the story, and it spread like wildfire. were frightened and began to delay, and even entirely refuse, vaccinations for their children. Over the next twelve years, the possibility of a link between vaccinations and autism was studied exhaustively. Interestingly, no reputable, relevant study confirmed Wakefield’s findings. Finally, in 2004, it was revealed that Wakefield had been paid by attorneys wanting to file lawsuits against vaccine manufacturers to produce the study and the paper was eventually retracted. But much like those who once passionately stood by the theory that the earth was flat, there are those who still continue to pay undue lip service to this absurd fallacy. Vaccines are just a money grab for big pharmaceuticals Okay, let’s be clear on this. Do pharmaceutical companies make money on vaccinations? Yes, they do. Do you know what they would make even more money on? Chronic disease. So it begs the question, to any logical mind, why would pharmaceutical companies produce vaccines to prevent the diseases that they would profit most from? It makes no sense. The truth is, if vaccination rates dropped there would be an increase in preventable disease, many of which have high rates of complications resulting in hospitalisation and expensive treatment. And there is far more money in that than there is in vaccines. Another argument often used by antivaxxers is that pharmaceutical companies see vaccines as an investment. They suggest the 24
game plan is to break even on the vaccines themselves but make a bank load on treating the chronic problems they cause! Let’s forget the medical side for one moment and consider this from a business point of view. This would be a strategy that would be literally laughed out of the secret big pharmaceutical’s boardroom because they know that vaccines don’t cause chronic problems. The vaccines prevent it. It just doesn’t make any sense. The diseases we are being vaccinated against don’t exist any more You’re absolutely right. And be assured, it’s not because they just had enough one-day, packed up their suitcase and disappeared. It’s down to one very simple reason that begins with the letter V…yes, you guessed it: vaccinations. There are a number of preventable diseases that are very rare in our society. This is because we have been collectively vaccinating against them for decades. This doesn’t mean we can rest on our proverbial laurels. While these diseases are not prevalent in our society, they are more rampant in other parts of the world and travellers can unknowingly bring these diseases home with them. This is where the concept of herd immunity becomes so imperative. Herd immunity is a form of indirect protection from infectious disease that occurs when the majority of the population is immune, providing a measure of protection to those who aren’t. For the few that are genuinely allergic or unable to be vaccinated, this measure of protection is vital.

o many people endlessly chase variety and fun with their exercise program. While I believe that for exercise to work long term you need to enjoy it, variety isn’t the only way to make exercising fun. Tricking your muscles and changing it up! I often hear people speak about tricking their muscles by doing a different exercise. When you hit a plateau, and you can no longer make any further progress with what you are doing, a change-up can work wonders. Problem is most people change it up long before they hit that plateau. If you are judging your workout by how sore you are getting, you are misinformed. Soreness is just the nerve endings feeling some pressure around micro-swelling that has been created by new movement. Soreness can be a good thing, but it is probably not an indicator of your progress. Progress is king When it comes to gauging the effectiveness of your workout the only metric that matters is progression. Did you improve (reps, weight, time) on your last workout? For that to be measured, you must repeat what you did last time. The progress may seem slow, but if you improve a little each week that will accumulate over a year or longer and you will see some incredible results. The name of the game is patience. One workout won't make much of a difference; it’s the accumulation of workouts that matters.

Cardio intervals work best, but this is where cross-training can be useful if you work at a sufficiently high level. When it comes to burning fat, this is where low to moderate cardio comes in. hey say travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer. I know this resonates with those of you who have taken that trip of a lifetime, and those who know yours is still to come. Sometimes we’re all set and well prepared to go on an adventure; or a travel opportunity comes up at just the right moment. This can happen when we can’t afford to wait for others to be ‘ready’. It’s time to go it alone. The idea of travelling to a foreign land on your own can be terrifying. Regretting an opportunity in life is worse though. Fortunately, there’s thousands of resources and fellow travellers out there of all ages, sharing how to embrace this style of travel, should time and chance present. You can follow their blogs, Instagram and YouTube channels for inspiration and stories. We’ve asked two of our favourite bloggers for their tips on where to start. Geri Vladeva (whenwomantravels.com) Norway and Japan are my favourite destinations for solo female travel. Both cultures are highly respectful of personal space and, as an introverted person, it was very important to me to feel good and safe travelling
alone. At the same time, people in these countries are friendly and helpful, in case you need assistance. I’ve never had a truly scary moment during my solo travels. Sometimes, it is difficult not to feel confused when you can’t find your way around. Using your instincts and learning to be a good judge of character goes a long way and is enough to keep you going and safe. I think the most important thing for first-time solo travellers is to carefully choose your destinations. Pick the ones that are known to offer a safe environment and only when you start feeling more experienced, go wild and adventurous. The common-sense and vigilant mind will help you out of any situation. Naddya Wagner (ntripping.com) For me, the best solo travel destinations are those with lots of museums and attractions. Not everyone is a history or art buff like me, so when travelling with other people, it’s hard to balance how long to spend at each site. When you travel alone, you can spend as much or as little time wherever you like. My top solo travel destinations are Venice (Italy), Paphos (Cyprus), and Dubai (UAE). Navigating the streets or throwing out the map and getting lost in these cities is a great experience! The most challenging moment I’ve had travelling alone was getting lost in Milan in Italy. While trying to find my accommodation on the first night in the city, I got confused. I went into a café, relaxed, asked for directions, and had to walk back a little. In the end, it was fine. My best advice to anyone considering solo travel is don’t be shy to ask for help.

However, community and seeking those opportunities is integral to professionals in any field. It’s all about creating opportunities for yourself too – just like Cassandra did when she interned locally, collaborated with Townville’s own designers to run an emerging designers’ store in the CBD and got involved with Townsville Fashion Festival. The lesson here? Soak up any knowledge you can about the industry. “Creativity is in my blood, with a lifelong love affinity for fashion set into my heart from the moment my grandmother taught me to sew on her old Singer machine. I have spent the majority of my young life tirelessly honing my craft, leaving my small hometown to attend design school in the city and make my dreams a reality. Growing up in Townsville, North Queensland was limiting in some ways, yet beneficial in others - there is a real sense of community that gets behind you to support, however there can be less opportunities, especially as someone just starting out,” explained Cassandra. Cassandra also spoke of how formal studies drew her to the Gold Coast, though not a prerequisite for every business owner, it allowed her to meet an amazing network of people. She felt what many do when they move to the coast: the hustle is very real, and you must learn to stand on your own. The other lesson? Nothing good comes easy, and balance and sacrifice is part and parcel of following the ‘dream’ – as is learning the process from the bottom up. Cassandra elaborated,“After moving to the Gold Coast, I was lucky enough to get my first 'fashion job' while still completing my studies. I started off in quality control and progressed to design and product development. Launching a business is hard work - the hustle of balancing full-time work to support myself and finding the time to grow my brand was very difficult for quite a few years.There was lots of coffee and not so much sleep!” We also spoke of the importance of representation and diversity in the fashion industry: it’s a mantle that brands the world over are being asked to uphold.There is a power brands have to create communities, inspire women of different shapes and sizes, and an opportunity for them to be role models in the way they fulfill their responsibility to partake in ethical manufacturing. For Lazy Girl Lingerie, this means ethical manufacturing, making a positive contribution to the fashion industry with its inclusive design and letting the love shine through. ‘’So much love, time and hard work has gone into the creation of not only each design but also my brand as a whole. Every stage of the process is carried out by me - I dream up new designs in my sketch book, make patterns, sew samples, cut and sew orders, answer emails, co-ordinate photoshoots, and manage my website. It's a big job, but when I hear back from my customers that something I made had the power to make them feel so special and helped them celebrate their body, it makes it all worth it,’’ said Cassandra.

side hustle Ever dreamt of setting up your own side hustle? Helen Baker, qualified Australian financial adviser and author of On Your Own Two Feet: Steady Steps to Women’s Financial Independence, shows us how assion is making a lot of Australians do it. So is boredom. And then there are those seeking a bit on the side because they want some fun. From virtual assistants and app developers to cake decorators and wedding photographers, thousands of Australians are turning their skills or hobbies into extra income as boss of their 'side hustle'. Recent industry research Recent industry research suggests one in four Australians already have a side hustle and about three out of four of those are pursuing something they are passionate about. It all sounds fabulous: you do something that you enjoy, you determine how much time and energy you allocate – and you make some dosh doing it.That’s all great if you have your financial foundations squarely in place, but in my experience, few people do (without having had professional advice beforehand). And that concerns me and here’s why: women are wired for security. We thrive when we have clarity and a sense of control. Unfortunately, most of us don’t have enough for retirement and that saps our confidence in what our future holds. Overlooking financial foundation essentials The four financial foundations every woman needs revolve around a spending and investment plan: insurances, estate planning, superannuation, and an emergency fund. In setting up a side hustle, I believe insurances are an area that may be seriously overlooked. If this is the first time you’ve worked for yourself, you

Professional indemnity insurance and public liability insurance are two that need to be top of mind. Professional indemnity helps protect against claims clients make for loss caused by professional service or advice. Public liability is in case a customer is injured, or their property is damaged. It’s also worth checking whether paring back hours of your regular job has an impact on existing income protection insurance. Set up costs The ‘emergency fund’ is usually considered as a safety net for unforeseen ‘hiccups’ in life, such as a lost job or marriage break-up. It’s also there for out of the ordinary outlays such as whitegoods or car breakdowns. For the side hustle, you may need to some start-up outlays. Is it worth getting a bank loan (think about repayments) or can you use some emergency funds now, and top it up when you get going? Many side hustles are cash-based and, probably, undeclared income.The Tax Office is wise to this and I hear it’s looking at people who host travellers in their spare rooms (such as Airbnb). Naturally, if you aren’t declaring income you can’t legitimately claim deductions either. Lifestyle cost The side hustle concept sounds brilliant but is it right for you? That depends on your personal circumstances and may need some tough 39
questions answered. Like, is this side hustle actually profitable or is it a distraction? Could it undermine your long-term financial position by taking away energy and time earning in another way (like a second job or seeking a promotion)? Five years down the track, if you pursue a side hustle will you be in a position you regret financially, or will you be standing on your own two feet? Maybe you can answer this honestly alone or maybe you could benefit from bouncing the idea off a professional financial adviser. Side hustles can provide the best of both worlds, like for my friend Rach, who works in disability care and has a travel blog on the side. She’s been doing it about ten years now and has as decent following. She sees it as a way of adding ‘life’ to her days as she experiences places she’d never afford herself, for free, and can envisage keeping on doing this when she retires in a few years. Her day job though is what pays for her ‘now’ and ‘future’. Another friend, Sonya, has baked birthday cakes afterhours for a couple of years. She’s loved unleashing her creativity and gets great satisfaction in seeing clients happy with her work, but it actually costs her money to do it.The price point isn’t sustainable for her as a side hustle. Make sure you consider the financial viability of any idea you’d like to see turn into a side income stream. April 2019

So, let's investigate how some tax planning strategies can help us keep more of our hard-earned money. Let’s first talk superannuation; nearly all Australians over the age of 18 have a superannuation fund. Superannuation is a great tax-effective strategy for retirement – but how can we use it? We know that our employer needs to
put a minimum of 9.5% into our super fund, but did you know that you can contribute up to $25,000 (including the employer's contribution) into super? We can now contribute from both pre-tax (salary sacrifice contributions) or aftertax contributions and claim the tax deduction later. The ability to contribute both ways has been a beneficial change to employees. Did you also know, if your spouse is earning less than $37,000 per annum and you put a $3,000 spouse contribution into their super fund, you can claim a $540 tax offset? If your partner is older than you, there is an opportunity to contribute to their super through super splitting and taking advantage of the tax-free status earlier, boosting your retirement savings. Now if we move the focus to invest outside of super. Do you have a home

loan? If so, do you have equity in your home? Well, if you answered yes, consider this: for the right people, a debt recycling strategy can be extremely beneficial for many reasons. Imagine being in a position where investing in assets - managed funds or shares can be achieved using the equity in the home - and the income earned from these investments, can be used to reduce the non-deductible home loan debt faster. With each cycle, the home loan debt reduces faster, and the investment loan is increased, acquiring more investments where the loan is 100% tax-deductible. JEN’S CAPRESE SALAD SERVES 4-5 Ingredients 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup of freshly chopped, fresh basil 1 packet of Dairy-Free Down Under Mozzarella Style Slices 3 ripe, juicy tomatoes 3 tbsp of balsamic vinegar (regular, white, or golden) Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Method Slice tomatoes into round circles. Cut the Mozzarella Style Slices into circles with a cookie cutter to match the same size of the sliced tomatoes. Layer the Mozzarella Style Slices and tomatoes evenly on the platter. Drizzle the virgin olive oil or balsamic over the top and season to taste with salt and pepper.

GLUTEN AND DAIRY-FREE NAPOLETANA PIZZA SERVES 1-2
Ingredients 1 pizza base (can be gluten-free) 1 portion of Jen’s Tomato Sauce (see recipe and method below) 1 pack of Dairy-Free Down Under 200g Mozzarella Shreds A selection of your favourite toppings (top tip: keep it simple and just top with fresh basil leaves)
Jen’s Tomato Sauce: Ingredients: 1 tin of crushed tomatoes 2 tbsp of tomato purée 2 garlic cloves 1 small brown onion finely diced 2 tbsp of Italian mixed herbs Pinch of salt and pepper Method Fry onion, garlic and herbs together until soft. Add tomatoes and purée. Stir well, season and cook for a further 10 minutes. Check seasoning. Liquidise and allow to cool slightly before using. Assembly of the pizza Place 2-3 tablespoons of tomato sauce on each pizza or to taste (spread evenly). Place your favourite toppings on top of pizza. Scatter Dairy-Free Down Under Mozzarella Cheese Shreds over the top. Put into oven and bake on 200°c until Mozzarella starts to melt. Then, put under the grill until it browns. This is an important step and key to creating that “gooey” cheesy texture. Pull out and top with basil leaves.

Ingredients Your favourite bun (can be gluten-free) A mixture of fresh veggies like grated carrot, beetroot, crispy lettuce, thinly sliced tomatoes and crunchy cucumber Vegan pattie (available at most supermarkets and independents) 1 packet of Dairy-Free Down Under Cheddar Style Slices 1 bottle of Dairy-Free Down Under Aioli Method Cook your veggie pattie. Spread the Dairy-Free Down Under Aioli on each side of the bun. Layer the bun with one or two slices of Dairy-Free Down Under Cheddar Style Slices. Add all the yummy vegetables.

JEN’S VEGAN SHEPHERD’S PIE SERVES 4-5
Ingredients Base 500g of cooked adzuki beans (can be tinned or soaked and boiled, according to packet instructions) 1 medium brown onion diced finely 1 large carrot diced 250g of mushrooms (I use large white flat or portobello) 1 tin of crushed tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato purée 2-3 tsp mixed herbs 2 garlic cloves (optional) 2-3 tbsp olive oil or any suitable cooking oil even Nuttlex 1 1/2 cups quality vegetable stock Salt and pepper to taste 1-2 tbsp chickpea flour to thicken, mixed to a paste before adding. Topping 3 large potatoes 100-125g Dairy-Free Down Under Cheddar Cheese Shreds 3 tbsp rice milk or any nut milk Salt and pepper to taste 2-3 tbsp of Dairy-Free Down Under Parmesan cheese Method Peel and dice onion. Peel and dice carrot. Wash mushrooms and cut up roughly. Fry onion, garlic and herbs for two mins over a moderate heat. Add carrots and continue to cook for a further minute. Add mushrooms, stir well and cook over a low/moderate heat until mushrooms soften. Add tin of crushed tomatoes and the tomato purée. Stir well. Simmer for about ten minutes until the vegetables are cooked. Season, taste and add more salt and pepper as necessary. Add the cooked beans and stir through. Add enough vegetable stock to just cover the mixture and mix. Bring to a simmer. Thicken by sprinkling over a tbsp of chickpea flour and stirring it well until thickened, use more if necessary. Peel, boil and mash potatoes. Add grated cheese and enough milk to get a creamy mash texture. Check seasoning. Place the bean mix in dish. Top with mash. Sprinkle over parmesan cheese. Bake in Oven at 190°c fan until top is golden and crispy. This will take about 25 minutes then to finish put under grill to bake golden brown.

chop? How three teenagers created a legacy for cancer fundraising uring her senior year at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in 2015, Meg Fraser’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Knowing her family wasn’t the only one affected, Meg approached her fellow prefects, including Beth Flint and Annabelle Crossley, to find a way to make a difference. “We wanted to find a way to get all the girls involved in a fundraiser to raise money for something that had affected a lot of families in the school community,” Meg says. “At the same time Meg’s mum was going through breast cancer, my grandmother had breast cancer as well, so this was something we really felt like we had to do,” Annabelle says.
“Cancer Council Queensland has always been a foundation we have supported, and we wanted to continue that with a different initiative to what we’d done previously.” The idea behind Beth, Meg and Annabelle’s plan was to encourage girls to seek donations and sponsorship in exchange for cutting off their ponytails, believing it was a small price to pay to support those impacted by cancer. “We only had a two-week period from when we announced the initiative to when the chop was happening, and in that time, we managed to raise more than $20,000,” Beth said. “I remember the day the cuts actually
happened – I was standing with my mum and we just got so emotional watching all the girls get their hair cut,” Meg said. In 2018, Ponytail Project become a statewide fundraising initiative in support of Cancer Council Queensland and more than 190 teenagers from across Queensland rocked the chop; already 100 students have registered this year (eight so far from the Gold Coast). Now in 2019, the original founders of the Ponytail Project are amazed and humbled to see how far their project has grown and are encouraging students on the Gold Coast to rock the chop! “Ponytail Project has become more than just a fundraiser, it has become a legacy of students who just want to make a difference,” Annabelle says. “Beyond the fact you are raising funds for an amazing cause, the Ponytail Project brings your school community together like nothing else.” “Ponytail Project is incredible, so we encourage everyone to sign up – you won’t regret it!” Beth says. More than 3,800 people are diagnosed with cancer on the Gold Coast each year. Funds raised through Ponytail Project support Cancer Council Queensland’s work, ensuring those with cancer have access to adequate support and care, and the latest cancer treatments.
