Developing and implementing integrated marketing strategies and campaigns for the dealership.

What has been your biggest achievement?

My biggest achievement (and what I’m most proud of) is the development of our Community Safety Events Program (CSEP), inclusive of Women Be Safe (Off Road) breakfasts and Parents and P Platers motoring events. Through the sponsorship of Crime Stoppers Gold Coast and with the support of dedicated staff, we have initiated and run regular events that include guest speakers from Queensland Police, the Queensland Fire & Emergency Services, specialist mechanics and other motoring experts.

Why do you love what you do? The whole buzz of marketing makes me feel alive! It’s fast paced, exciting and creative, as well as hugely rewarding to see a brainstormed idea grow and develop into a fully integrated campaign or event.

How do you define success? Success to me starts from being a good person - caring, genuine and honest, as well as being focused, driven, hardworking, enthusiastic and committed. It’s essential to have a happy and upbeat disposition and hugely positive outlook – there’s so much magic in it and it opens doors to amazing things.

What do you do in your down time? Down time is family time. Bike rides, local markets, going to the beach and just generally enjoying our unique Gold Coast lifestyle.

Village stores owner Brenden Huntly gives the low-down on how to up-style your home with a new look that won’t break the bank How do you achieve affordable luxe at home?

Begin by having an open mind and a simple approach. You don’t need to invest in everything you see or a multitude of pieces to have a luxurious interior. Set yourself a realistic budget and put a plan in place.

Create a simple floor plan of your space on paper and sketch in how you want it to look. Put together a mood board with clippings from magazines or printouts from online, along with paint chips from a colour specialist.

Having a solid ‘theme’ to work with will help achieve your desired look.

What items bring this look to life?

Think big! Again, this doesn’t mean blowing the budget on just a couple of oversized statement pieces. Mirrors or larger art pieces will give you a grand feel to any room.A well-made sofa with a simple neutral-toned fabric will soften a room and allow for beautiful homeware pieces to bring it all together. Make sure you leave room in your budget for a quality rug. Lighting is very important too, as this will carry the luxe vibe through into the evening. Finish off with a touch of gloss, metallic or glass as this will lift the overall interior.

What are the top 5 staples you should have to achieve this look?

You cannot look past a comfortable sofa, feature lighting - such as a pendant - at least one oversized mirror or art piece, indoor plants - living or artificial - and candles.

A near-fatal accident left her holed up in a hospital for three months…that’s when Claire Flynn found her purpose here was a huge build up to Gold Coaster Claire Flynn finding her “purpose”: Pronounced dead after a near-fatal bike accident, 27 years as a match maker, a failed marriage and signing up for the Kokoda challenge.

But it wasn’t until Claire was holed up in hospital for three months recovering from the accident, grateful to be alive, that she decided she wanted to be a coach for people who had also suffered trauma.

Claire began her coaching journey 10 years ago as a match maker with one of Australia’s leading dating agencies. She was a young confident teenager who would help men and women to meet their perfect match. After eight years in this industry she left to pursue a career in real estate.

But she still questioned where her real purpose lay.

“Then at 37 years old I separated from my husband. I wanted more out of life as I was living in a loveless marriage. After being in a codependent marriage for over 10 years I wanted to know who I really was and what I really wanted to achieve in life,” Claire says.

“I questioned myself many times: How do I want to live my life? What does my ideal life look like? I felt as if it lacked meaning and had become mundane.”

While she was still in real estate, Claire decided she needed a challenge and signed up for the 100km Kokoda trail walk in Papua New Guinea with 19 men she didn’t know.

“I became super fit through the Kokoda preparation, with a wonderfully hard body and fantastic abdominal muscles. It was this preparation that helped save my life a few months later,” she says.

On January 27, 2008 Claire’s life changed in the blink of an eye and she was faced with a much bigger challenge than she ever expected.

Claire was involved in an horrific motorbike accident that almost killed her.

“Somehow I hit the curb on the side of the road and accelerated over the island into two lanes of oncoming traffic and landed on the windscreen of a car,” she says.

“With an impact of 140km an hour, I was pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital.

After a short while I started to breathe again and was hooked up to life support.

It was touch and go over the next few weeks, and I needed five major internal operations.”

One doctor told Claire it was her strong abdominal muscles that helped save her life as they protected her organs. However, the tank of the bike had almost split her in half, smashing her pelvis to pieces.

She had no feeling from the waist down and on the right side of her body for more than 18 months.

As she lay flat on her back for three months during rehabilitation, Claire says she found plenty of time to think about what she wanted to do with her life.

A life coach friend of Claire’s came to visit her in hospital and that is when she knew she wanted to be a coach of some form and help other people who have experienced trauma.

Along with not having feeling from the 18

waist down, Claire had no feeling of orgasm.

“I became hungry to learn and understand more on healing the body, sexuality, mindset and conscious awareness,” Claire says.

Today she is a sex and intimacy coach, the founder of Intimate Options and has skills in sex coaching, bodywork, neuro linguistic programming, matrix therapies and sacred sexuality.

Now she knows how powerful the mind-genital connection really is.

“This journey has ignited my passion to help women and men reconnect with their own sexuality, but it all starts by healing their relationship with themselves,” she says.

After living in Western Australia for 25 years, Claire moved back to the Gold Coast two years ago and fell in love with a man she went to school with in Coomera. She now runs workshops and does bodywork for many couples, single men and single women.

Sofia Vergara all have those dangerous curves, beauty and sex appeal of the hourglass figure.

What I love most about these women is they know how to show off their curves, while still looking elegant and classy. The hourglass’s defining feature is her tiny waist, with bust and hips in proportion, creating beautiful, gentle curves you should be proud of.

But this ultra-feminine figure can prove to be a bit tricky to dress, so for styling tips on how to make the most of your curves and to dress with confidence, see my checklist below.

If you are an hourglass your wardrobe essentials are: • A supportive bra with built in cups, this helps to lengthen your waist.

• Pencil skirts and fitted Broderick dresses.

• Deep V-neckline tops and fitted cardigans, to elongate your figure.

• Full skirt dresses with a deep V-neckline and three-quarter sleeves, styled with a belt to accentuate your tiny waist.

• Minimal accessories – delicate necklaces, studs or medium-sized drop earrings.

• Peep-toe shoes - the perfect finishing touch to complement a curvy figure.

• Medium-sized handbags – think the classic Birkin but if you have the confidence of Kim Kardashian then the bigger the bag the better.

When buying clothes, the key is to always keep in mind the fabric and the shape of the garment. Look for fabrics that are supportive and avoid lightweight silks and chiffon, as they tend to create unwelcome lumps and bumps. Avoid chucky knit scarfs, cowboy boots, dresses or blouses with bows and frills and large necklaces.

Jeans can be unflattering on an hourglass if not styled well, however, draped fabric pants like the ones featured in our shoot work well for this shape, or fitted cropped pants with no pockets are a stylish alternative.

Business allows Paula flexible hours to support her daughter As a single parent with a 6-year-old child with ADHD, Paula needed to provide support to her daughter because school was a struggle for her.

“My small business enables me to work flexibly so I am there to drop her off and pick her up from school, and be able to attend medical appointments throughout the day. I can work early in the morning or at night to market my business,” she says.

Paula had moved to the northern Gold Coast but noticed there weren’t many chances to network.

“I had moved to Ormeau and didn’t know a soul and I had a new business and not one contact. I went out looking for networking groups and found that there were very few opportunities within the region. I had to travel to Hope Island or Beenleigh to network,” she says.

“As a single mum with a 6 year old,I could not attend early events or night events so I got creative and decided to run my own event program - I have 20 years of event management and industry development experience - so that businesses could come to me. It has been a hugely rewarding experience with 400 businesses coming through the lunch program since it started in September last year.

“I found many of the businesses who attended the lunch were home based, mobile or online (one of the unique things about the makeup of small businesses in the region). They had little opportunity to showcase their products and services to a wide audience because of the lack of a retail and business hub.

“I found the only other platform to promote my business in the region was at school fetes, but I wanted to showcase it to other business owners, and that’s how the North Gold Coast Business Expo was conceptualised.”

They loved it so much they are now planning to return in December for holiday number two.

What was the food like? I was expecting the variety to be limited and thought Craig and the girls might struggle

with meal choices, but there’s something for everyone. There is traditional Japanese food and yummy Ramen (soup) outlets everywhere. For more fussy eaters there is also Italian, pub grub and Indian.

Would you recommend it for couples and families? It’s great for couples and families. There is so much to see and do for all ages. Although I would warn families about the craziness of Tokyo and the subway system during peak times. We’ve already booked to go back in December this year.

Jess’s story Who: Steve, Jess, Zach, 10, and Sam, 8 From: Yatala We both got great flight deals with Jetstar and I’d heard some fabulous things too, including the snow. We loved Disneyland, the botanical gardens, Harajuku and the snow and the après lifestyle.

What was the highlight for you?

Definitely the amazing powder. Then the food, the après lifestyle, drinking cocktails then going to a Japanese club dancing with new friends. Watching the kids learn to master snowboarding and skiing was great.

I also loved how quirky Japan is, especially Tokyo. The people are regimented and polite but have the quirkiest sense of fashion, humour and decorating. It gives it a cheerful

vibe when everything is so structured. The people are so friendly and helpful.

We loved the food; delicious steaks, traditional spiced wines, real hot chocolates, Ramen noodles, cheesecake in crepes (in Harajuku), the burgers - it was all fantastic. We even had Chinese in Japan and that was great too. There wasn’t one bad meal.

Would you go back? The food and the snow alone are the reason I am going back.

It’s the only country I have been to twice (and in one year), so I must have enjoyed it. It’s great for families and couples because there is so much to do. Tokyo is crazy busy though, so those who visit must have patience and be willing to wait for things. Niseko is very Australian owned, so a good place if you’re concerned about the language barrier.

Your top 5 winter workout excuses ith the onset of the dreaded August winds upon us like clockwork, we are not out of the winter cold just yet. But that doesn’t mean you get to stay in bed under the warmth and comfort of your doona, says Australia’s number one fitness guru and former Australian Ironman surf lifesaving champion Guy Leech.

Did you know half of Australians put on up to 5kg over winter, according to the Dieticians Association research? It is easy to understand why, but Guy’s not buying it.

“Winter often provides the perfect excuse for people to skip workouts or drop their workout routine all together,” he says.

“But the reality is, consistency is key and you can’t build a strong and healthy body by bailing three months of the year.”

It’s too cold to get up “This is one of my favourite excuses,” says Guy, who suggests making a fool-proof plan to get you out of your warm and cosy bed.“Put a heater in your room and set it on a timer so it starts cranking 20 minutes before you wake up. Additionally, lay out your workout clothes the night before so you can literally jump out of bed and put them on. If that fails, recruit an exercise buddy and enforce a ‘no cancellation’ policy between you.”

I don’t want to catch a cold “This is an old wives’ tale from way back,” he says. “Exercising in the cold doesn’t give you a cold, on the contrary, exercise keeps us fit and healthy, which, in turn, boosts immunity. So you’re not going to be any healthier by skipping your workout.” Guy says the winter we experience in Australia is nowhere near as intense as other places around the world where people continue to exercise on a daily basis. “Go to New York in winter and you’ll see countless people rugged up and going for a jog in the snow.

I’ve got the winter blues and can’t get motivated Guy admits winter can often leave us feeling sluggish and a little down. “Set yourself a goal for the winter that you can focus on – maybe it’s doing your first mini triathlon, or maybe it’s just increasing the time you can exercise without stopping by 5 minutes a week.” Whatever your goal, having something to work towards gives you a solid reason not to skip your workouts and should get you feeling excited as you move closer to achieving your goal, or indeed, achieve it. “Once you’ve chosen your goal, write it down and put it somewhere you can see every day. Better yet, tell people about it or find someone to go on the journey with you so you can share the experience together,” he says.

Personal training: Cost vs value

t is amazing how many people call around to different fitness businesses trying to find out their “prices” so they can compare them. Taking care of your body and your health shouldn’t be a luxury, it should be something you do no matter what … but unfortunately that isn’t the reality for the majority of Gold Coasters.

As owner of Vision Personal Training Bundall, what really upsets me more than anything, is when I ask new clients if they are currently exercising, the response: ‘No, but I have a gym membership’.

The issue I have with gym memberships is if you join for 12 months there are four outcomes: 1. You get lots of use out of the gym and the $1000 you spend gives you great value.

2. You use the gym here and there and the average is about 20 workouts over the year (a popular option for many people). Do the maths … you paid $50 a workout. You can get a personal trainer for that.

3. You use the gym hard core for the first two weeks, get distracted/unmotivated/cold/intimidated by the singlet crowd, and you don’t use it for the other 50 weeks of the year. That’s $100 per workout! R-I-P-O-F-F. 4.You join the gym, get a personal trainer, pre-pay for 10 sessions, get so sore and busted from your first workout that you would rather visit your dentist for a wisdom tooth extraction than see that sadistic bastard with the tight buns and perfect hair who tortured you for enjoyment ever again! You just spent $750 a session.

5. I know I said four, but every now and then people have joined a gym and prior to the end of their 12 months the gym closes its doors and packs up shop and you are left with a membership to a carpark.

Are you paying for a workout or a result?

It is important to decide what you want to get out of joining a gym/personal training studio. Are you paying for an exercise session? I think if you are, the workout needs to be so much higher quality than what you could ever do on your own or that you are getting super-specialised exercises that only a professional could give you.

If you are paying for a result it is important to work out exactly what it is that’s going to get you a result. If you think all it takes is 30 minutes or an hour of exercise here or there to get a result, you are not seeing the whole picture. What you do in your week when you are not working out (the other 167 hours) has a massive influence over your result.

A few things your trainer should be doing: 1. Measuring. If you aren’t actually tracking and measuring results, it is impossible to see if you are making progress.

2. You should be following a planned out program that is repeatable. Variety is an old trick average trainers use to confuse you. It is advisable to change up your workouts, but changing the session every week is the easiest way to hide the lack of results. I recommend changing the workout monthly, that way you have four weeks to build on each time.

3. Helping you keep stay focused during the week. Awesome trainers set you homework, follow up on your actions, check in on you between sessions, stalk you on Facebook (anything to keep you on track!) and ask you about your week. We have an amazing app that makes it super easy to get results.

4. Guarantee your results. If your trainer sits down with you and 43

you set a goal to lose 9kg over the next nine weeks and you follow that plan diligently and only lose 4kg, we believe they should give your money back! You paid for their advice and they didn’t deliver.

So next time you are making a decision about your health and well-being, remember the cheapest is often the nastiest and may even be the biggest waste of money, and in the end the most expensive tag on your key chain.

SWEET CHILLI CRAB SERVES 2 INGREDIENTS • 1 mud crab, cleaned • 3⁄4 cup (240g) sweet chilli sauce • 1 bunch coriander, rinsed and roughly chopped • 2 tins (400ml each) coconut milk METHOD Halve the crab and crack its claws. Put all the ingredients in a large saucepan, cover and simmer on medium for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Transfer to a serving plate and eat immediately.

Optional: Can also be made with sand crab, spanner crab, lobster or bugs.

FRENCH LAMB CASSEROLE SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS • 1kg lamb chops, fat removed • 1 packet French onion soup mix • 1 can (425g) crushed tomatoes with herbs and garlic • 6 carrots, halved METHOD Place all the ingredients in a slow cooker and cook on low for six hours, or on high for 3-4 hours.

Optional: Serve with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables.

PORK AND PUMPKIN CURRY serves 4

INGREDIENTS • 1⁄2kg pork, cubed • 2 tablespoons red curry paste • 1 can (400g) coconut cream • 1⁄2kg butternut pumpkin, cubed METHOD: In a large nonstick saucepan, brown the pork over medium heat. Add the curry paste and cook for 5 minutes. Add the coconut cream and 1⁄2 cup water to the pan. Add the pumpkin, season with sea salt and pepper to taste, and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the pork is cooked, 30 to 40 minutes. Simply reheat when ready to serve.

Optional: Serve with rice and chapattis

PECAN PIE SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS 3 egg whites 1 cup (200g) caster sugar 1 cup (100g) pecan nuts, chopped 22 Ritz crackers, crushed METHOD: Beat egg whites until stiff, gently adding caster sugar throughout. Fold in chopped pecan nuts and crushed crackers. Pour mixture into a pie dish and bake in a preheated 180C oven for 25 minutes.

Optional: Add a dash of vanilla essence. Slice as you would a cheesecake and top with a dollop of whipped cream and seasonal fruit.

Does it really matter if we can’t

ver fancied disappearing? I can think of times when I have – from wanting the floor to gobble me up and away from an embarrassing moment, to the times when I’ve longed for something new, like a travel adventure to the remote shores of South America where no-one knows my name and I can play anyone I like.

We’ve all fantasised about reinvention, and many have probably achieved it by taking advantage of a change in location, job or even through an extreme makeover. The mere decision to step into a strange new world, free of past connections can indeed mean “uncool you” transforms into “rockstar you”. A cinematic example comes to mind, in Love Actually when Colin chose to move to Wisconsin, where his British accent was “cute” and there were no past associations present to let on they thought he wasn’t as special as his new American friends perceived him to be.

Is escaping the shackles of past mistakes and reputation really possible now though, and if not, does it matter?

Each year, more and more of our lives – every element (especially for the younger set) – is captured, streamed and stored on servers the world over. Who needs paparazzi when you’ve got mates Instagramming the world as they see it (which may not necessarily present all others at their best)?

There’s been a bit in the papers recently about Google’s “right to be forgotten” – now, in certain parts of the world, Google is legally obliged to consider removing links pertaining to your life which you’re totally adverse to. Great!

There’s a number of hideous social pics from 2007’s awful haircut I’d like taken down, thanks.

Although I won’t bother chasing the Google gods about those and I assume there’ll be some who will use this law for evil deeds - the idea of erasing the past can seem tantalising.

However, even if someone was to find all that you’re unable to erase, how much does a search around the worldwide web really say about you? The real you, I mean.

Think about it, how many times have you posted a cheerful update on Facebook when really, you’ve been feeling miserable? And consider when you’ve held back on comments August 2015

or status updates. Your real life certainly isn’t showcased in its entirety online. No one’s is – not even any of the Kardashians.

A recent example I can relay, involves my mate Cara, in a tale of happy-hour martinis and high heels, a long tasselled skirt (easily tripped-up when paired with aforementioned drinks and shoes) and unrequited love. You see she fell – for a boy, and on her face; in front of him and a couple of other employers, on a night out which in hindsight, she should not have agreed to partake in. Or at least, she should have had less to drink, or gone home earlier. “All of the above”, she told me in tears. On Facebook, however, she posted a hilarious recount of a night out and busted-up

We can “research” or even stalk online (not advisable – as it will end badly!), but I think Cara’s story is relatable and demonstrates that no amount of Googling or social stalking can shed absolute light on a person’s true nature or situation.

As well as regrettable multimedia, there’s also plenty of misleading and downright untrue details about millions of people on the net. There are certainly items I’d erase, but the same goes in “real-life” too. The desire to “delete and refresh” is one that pre-dates even the internet! I’d definitely get rid of all evidence of an ugly purple velvet shirt I used to wear that did nothing to complement my body shape. All images of the badly done red home-hair-dye need to corrupt also.

I’d erase letters written and words said in the heat of a moment; I would change the way I have dealt with various situations and certainly better manage hurt caused to others.

Even without evidence – electronic or 50

otherwise – these are filed in my brain and probably (unfortunately) in the minds of others too. Would I want it all erased? Yes, some of it (thankfully not much, though). But, as memories do fade,eventually most dodgy digital footprints will fall beyond the first page of a www. search – and who views past there anyway?!

No need to fret if your“right to be forgotten” request is denied. Dealing with our mess-ups, for the most part, is an opportunity to learn about ourselves, develop grace, humility and that true self that cannot be presented accurately in any other form but reality. It is what it is, and as time goes by, it’s usually proven that #epicfails do not have a lasting negative impact on our ultimate goals and destination. A comforting thought, accessed only with hindsight.

Another lesson on reflection,is the reminder that next time you’re out with work friends, including the one you’re crushing on, make sure you eat a decent meal before popping open that third bottle of vino and checking-in on Facebook with a selfie… just in case it ends up a moment you’ll wish could be forgotten.
