LETTER FROM

FESTIVAL

Editor

ver the past few months, inspired by our spring issues and my obsession with all things Marie Kondo, I have been attempting to make some more room in my home. There were some bittersweet goodbyes to beloved pieces of clothing and an astounding amount of paperwork that had piled up to be rid of, but most of all, I loved perusing through my old books and magazines. And when I did, I noticed something very interesting… Some of my most cherished possessions are Christmas gifts; specifically, gifts of books — I have always found written words can inspire, educate and create a world we love to get lost in. In these books there is normally a message left to me on the first few pages from whomever gifted me that particular book, and it struck me that most of these, even those going back to my high school years, mentioned magazines, fashion, writing and editing. What was particularly special about this is that these choices of gifts did something to motivate, encourage, guide, and gave me something to aspire to. So, if you are partaking in gift giving this season, this is what the best gifts (whether material or not) should aim to do. It is indeed the thought that counts though, and Get it girls, we have put a lot of thought into this issue, just for you! We hope this issue’s feature stories motivate and guide you, and that our profiles on extraordinary locals both inspire and encourage you. And finally, that our divine recipes, beauty and fashion, and advice pieces, give you something to get lost in. Don't forget though, while you're digging out the fairy lights and favourite baubles (or popping a delicious bottle of champagne to enjoy with all those delectable Christmas goodies!) what really matters: spending time with loved ones. Now, it’s time to indulge in the season Get it girls, enjoy a corny movie or two, and say farewell to 2019. We’ll see you again in the New Year. Here’s to making 2020 a remarkable one — cheers!

Christmas presence — By Krysten Davis —

WIN!

$300 voucher

hen I was a kid, I thought that Easter happened one year, and Christmas happened the next. The summer holidays seemed like an endless stretch of glorious time that was almost infinite. I have found that as I’ve gotten older my perception of time has changed. I think the biggest shift occurs when you have a baby. You count a baby’s age in days, then weeks, then months and all too quickly in years (unless you’re the idiot who talks about having a 36-month-old baby). My point is that all of a sudden, it’s nearly Christmas… again! Surely, we just had Christmas? My babies, whose age was once counted in days, are now nearly adults. My son is off to uni interstate next year and my daughter will be finishing year twelve. Along with the shift in time perception comes the realisation that any resource that is finite is inherently valuable. My mum died this year and that also brought home, all too starkly, the finite nature of our time.

Tracie

My point is (now that I’ve finally got there!) this Christmas, in the midst of cooking and cleaning, making sure that Aunty Sue doesn’t go too hard, too early, on the bubbles, and that the toddler doesn’t feed the dog chocolate, appreciate the time. Take time to just hang out with the family (the ones you like anyway). Take time to reflect on your year and make plans for the next one. Take time to lie in the sun or read a book, take time to just BE in the moment. Value yourself and realise that your presence is much more important than your presents.

GET IT I LIFESTYLE s a child you were told magical stories called fairy tales. They were full of wonder — a way for you to connect with love, magic, courage and the endless possibilities available to you in the world. You took the stories that meant the most to you and wove their magic into your play, creating your own tales of spellbinding miracles and keeping yourself entertained with an imagination that ran wild and free. Then suddenly, even though you were still really young, and the world was the

same place you’d always lived in, the adults around you started to look at you differently. They began to temper your dreams, suggesting things you should be doing and who you should become. Your stories started to involve less magic and more discipline, less imagination and more ‘soldiering on’. Your life became about giving everything to everyone else and you had to learn to quickly silence your inner voice when it asked: ‘what about me?’ Then came adulthood and your view of the world became clouded with ‘reality’. Your stories became about the daily grind and the reasons why it was no longer possible for you to do, be and achieve certain things. You became afraid to do things, and you developed a fear that the world would see the truth about who you ‘really’ are. So, you created a version of yourself that sparkled a little less than it should. Despite all of this, we retain a hidden part inside that yearns for love and adventure, for courage and for light that brings meaning to life. Now is the time to let your light shine: practice, “I can...” December 2019

It may seem that the great successes in life are on the other end of a step that you’re afraid to take. But when you apply a simple shift in perception, it’s easy to see that all it takes is to let go and move. Those stories that you’ve created around why you can’t be, have or do something in your life — the ones that start with, ‘I can’t because …’ — are common. The way beyond them is to shift your perception of them, so you can see that every time you say, ‘I can’t’ about something, you’re creating a distraction so you don’t have to challenge the things you’ve been told you’re ‘capable of’, or ‘allowed’ to do. While you remain stuck doing what you’re ‘supposed’ to do, you’re actually making yourself busy living a life someone else has given you. You weigh yourself down with obligations that aren’t yours, and generally do far too many things that are stressful, uninspiring and exhausting. This can lead you to a highly overwhelmed and unfulfilled life where you end up totally disconnected from yourself, sometimes 12

desperately unhappy and unwell. It may seem that the great successes in life are on the other end of a step that you’re afraid to take. But when you apply a simple shift in perception, it’s easy to see that all it takes is to let go and move. With movement comes energy. With energy comes intent. Reducing the impact of the ‘I can’t do that because …’ in your life is as easy as taking a deep breath, asking yourself, ‘how can I look at this differently?’ and stepping forward in any direction. It’s the movement that makes all the difference. Which ‘I can’t …’ will you challenge today? IN HER

shoes

Website credit: traceymathers.com

We get to know Tracey Mathers, the renowned Australian entrepreneur whose creating her own legacy one step at a time. Writes Get it’s Kathleen Loxton

racey’s passion for people, inspiring others and, ultimately, the power of a fabulous pair of shoes, has never died. Of the long-lasting love affair, Tracey remarked,“I always say to people I consider myself one of the lucky ones in life, because I actually knew from a very early age exactly what I wanted to do…” Growing up in a family where her grandfather was founder and creator of Mathers Shoes, Tracey went on to watch her father take over the company when there were 20 stores and built it into an empire. Looking back, Tracey said,“I watched the whole thing unfold and I absolutely loved it, I had such full interest in it. My youngest memory is from about the age of six and my dad had a beautiful office, a big building [with] three-four stories, in Brisbane city, and I remember going into his office and loving it. I loved sitting in his chair and pretending I was running the organisation…” When Mathers was taken over, the transition was tough on Tracey, who had been working with Mathers since she was 14-years-old at the time. Through this period, Tracey saw a gap in the market and took her very own big step into business. Tracey explained,“I went to my dad with a business plan and said,‘I think I want to open up my own shoe store,’ at 24 years of age, and he was more excited than I was. He said,‘Fantastic, go for it. I’ll back you 100 per cent.’ That’s when Tracey Mathers Shoe Studio started. 1991 was my first store opening…” Tracey’s business grew from there, including six stores that she had for 26 years, but one day she got a feeling there was more that she wanted to do.“I loved shoes, I still love shoes, I actually miss the stores since I sold them all three years ago. But I think what happened was I woke up one day and thought, you know this really was my father’s and grandfather’s legacy and maybe it’s time for me to create something else,’’ Tracey recalled. December 2019

Today, Tracey mentors and inspires women, guiding them in running small to medium sized organisations, bringing with her the wealth of knowledge she has gained throughout her incredible career to date. “The three key areas that I’m interested in helping people with is: firstly, clarity, so that’s getting [a clear idea of] what is it that you need to change, do, fix, be, [your] goals and what you want from life…; secondly, it’s the whole confidence thing, for some reason so many of us are so quick to put ourselves down, and we’re great with the negative words…; the third is connection, because I feel the three go together, you know there’s so many people out there doing great things, so if we can connect and help one another, we can make this whole thing easier…” Tracey summarised. When Tracey’s girlfriend suggested she become a mentor, that’s when her new path truly started. She now also teaches women how to network and ask for help, spreading the important message of finding our own ‘circle of trust’ of people who will champion us. These approaches are tailored to each client, meaning Tracey’s days are as diverse as her talents. It’s this that motivated Tracey to work with women to improve their business and personal lives, and helping them control their fear is a crucial element in doing so.“We all have the power within us, it’s just finding it, stepping into it and stepping out, and I want to be able to help women to do that,” Tracey added. The highlight for Tracey is undoubtedly helping women get to the route of problems and watching them shine, and she finds “there is no greater reward.” Though, we discussed the ongoing issue of imposter syndrome, especially for women, and how crucial it is to be conscious of the language we use on ourselves, as Tracey noted we tend to use more negative than positive words on a daily basis. In true Tracey style, she left us with a wonderful piece of advice,“You need to be able to own how fabulous you are, you need to celebrate the wins, you need to be able to share with the world your successes.” 14

GET IT I FEATURE

It's a

DIGITAL WORLD after all

We are constantly warned of the dangers of too much screen time for children, but with our lives ever more digital, how can we ensure they reap the benefits while avoiding the pitfalls? Get it's Sarah Blinco investigates

December 2019

16

creen time is blamed for a lot of things, from games addiction to the pressures of social media and cyber bullying. But, technology is a fundamental part of modern life, and is only set to increase as artificial and voice intelligence infiltrates our human spaces at unprecedented speed. What are parents and schools to do, then? Schools are responding in a number of ways, Saint Stephen’s College headmaster Dr Jamie Dorrington tells Get it. “Our students are encouraged to use digital tools, particularly the tools in educational technology (EduTech) to add depth and breadth to their learning… Our society is playing catch-up, because rapidly emerging digital technologies are always well ahead of the protocols to guide their use… Our graduates will be expected to employ technologies to simultaneously compete and collaborate with their peers in many different parts of the world. This means that effective technology use must be supported by other skills, such as the capacity to work in teams and the ability to apply interdisciplinary knowledge.”

Making sense of screen time Parents should make considerations when deciding on the type and amount of screen time to offer their kids. Dr Dorrington explains: “There is clear evidence that phones can be a major distraction, not only from classroom activities, but also from playing, which is in itself an important learning activity. Only this morning, I listened to a report about young people’s excessive screen time. Data in the report came from parent surveys. It appears that parents are concerned about addiction to screens and the associated reduction in play time. This is something that sits squarely within the circle of influence of parents. If they use iPads as digital babysitters, they are sowing the seeds of this addiction. The other matter causing society concern is cyber bullying. Truth is, young people take their ques about how to treat other people from their home, and to a lesser extent, their school. If they hear their parents sniping at others, if they watch television shows that make celebrities of bullies, and if they attend a school with a culture of disrespect

(and I don’t know any schools like this), then they will mirror this behaviour in social media. The phone just becomes the vehicle to communicate ill-informed, destructive, and unsolicited opinions that were already formed.”

what is engaged learning and creation compared with what is entertainment and having discussions with children around self-regulation and safety.”

Finding balance and setting boundaries

There are many free resources that make using technology fun and educational for kids and parents — make movies or podcasts, produce music, edit and create art. Coding of course, is an excellent option. Michael Nixon, CEO of EduKits International, explains: “There are two main benefits kids gain from engaging in coding activities: a fundamental understanding of how our digital world works, and how to navigate a computer. The former will be extremely important for future generations who need to have at least a basic handle on how the many technologies encountered in their homes, schools and workplaces operate.”

Information is power, and it’s imperative that we are all equipped with the knowledge needed to develop a healthy relationship with technology. Nicola O’Brien is a computing education specialist at the Australian Computing Academy (aca.edu.au). She spends much of her time ensuring helpful information is cutting through. “We live in a world of technology, with so many services, entertainment, and ways to stay in touch online. We also share much of our personal information online. Children need to know how to use technology, and how to protect what matters to them. They should understand how these services and networks are created and what lies behind them too. Who is writing the algorithm that chooses your next song on Spotify? What does Siri really know about you? What's wrong with using the same passwords everywhere? How do game developers know how to keep you playing? “Allowing children to use technology thoughtfully, with curiosity, and allowing them to explore how technology works, sets them up with relevant skills for the rapidly changing world. We don't need to be fearful of our children growing up in a technology saturated world. We can work with them to think critically about how they use technology and the benefits for them in using it. “Children learn so much from creating with technology. Whether it's coding or tinkering with electronics and hardware. The sense of accomplishment they get from making something that's never been made before is enormous. Children acquire problem solving skills and need resilience to create prototypes (which never quite work), iterate, and then have another go.” How to tell what’s good for your kids or not? Nicola suggests asking yourself whether your children are consuming or creating? “There is a place for all uses of technology, it's about being aware of

Embracing enriching experiences

Michael may be a CEO, but he is just 16 years old. When he was 13, he identified a need to get his peers to understand coding and technology, and so designed the Amazing Annoyatron which teaches kids to code and is sold around the world. This savvy student clearly understands what’s ahead, and he’s keen to spread the word. “The future, especially when it comes to technology, is extremely volatile and difficult to predict. Certainly, for Australia to remain competitive it must have young innovators working together to build on the many science and technology advancements to date. Giving children exposure to coding at school won't create a generation of coders, but what it will do is ignite a curiosity for a higher proportion of school leavers to consider a career in information technology." Technology — is it friend or foe? Michael agrees with our other featured experts, reminding us that technology does not have a personality. “It’s not the internet or tech that’s either saving lives or causing mental health issues. The way people — and especially teenagers — use technology is generally in a way that amplifies their personalities.” Unsurprisingly the overarching advice is the same as for much in life: be responsible, use common sense, and consider the most positive approach to tech for you and your family.

We don't need to be fearful of our children growing up in a technology saturated world. We can work with them to think critically about how they use technology and the benefits for them in using it. 17

GET IT I MONEY

Financing

the festivities

With the silly season in full swing, Les McGuire ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial, guides us through managing our money in the busy weeks ahead ith the festive season well underway and so much to celebrate, how can we host a party or get together that has us celebrating in style while on a budget? When it comes to hosting that special get together, the biggest mistake many people make is saying “no” to the offer of help. I know I am so bad at this; guests say,“What can I bring,” and the prompt response is,“Nothing, everything is under control.” People seek direction and guidance, and it is just as uncomfortable for the guests not bringing something, as it is for everything to be the host’s responsibility. A sharing economy is one that operates so seamlessly, each person contributes, and there is no one feeling used, creating a better environment and culture for the day, which is half the battle. So, how do we achieve this outcome? Be prepared to accept help and the generosity someone else is offering. It is easier to say “yes” and “thank you” opposed to “no” without reason! If you have multiple people attending, send out some suggestions for what they can bring, if they would like, and the sharing economy is underway. The other area that I find people overcapitalise is feeling the need to purchase the most expensive things — champagne comes to mind. Most guests are grateful for what they receive as opposed to what the brand name is. The typical story I see at home-held events is that if there is expensive champagne on offer, people will do their best to consume as much as they can, as quick as they can, which can create the unintended consequences of a 1,000 headaches the next morning. Do your guests a favour; preserve the Panadol, purchase cheaper bottles that still sparkle and save some money — if they are pre-poured at a home event, you can get away with almost anything. Remember, celebrating in style should be about the people we are with, not the caviar on offer. When it comes to birthday parties, anniversaries, etc., most of the items we use to decorate can be reused. Purchase items that can be December 2019

stored, and then at the next event bring them out and reuse them to save some money. This season also gives us the opportunity to teach valuable lessons, and knowledge is power: one of the most important things we can do as a family is teaching our children about money. Learning how to respect it, and the importance of budgeting and saving, is crucial. I believe that if you feed someone a fish, you feed them for a day, if you teach them how to fish, you will feed them for life. If we use the same theory with money, then we will teach our children how to save for what they want, only purchase things they need, and better prepare them for life. I like to start by teaching children simple budgeting; any money they earn or receive as gifts we put on a page in separate amounts and have them add these amounts up, so they can best understand the importance of compounding and how saving increases the value of the money they have.

Remember, celebrating in style should be about the people we are with, not the caviar on offer. When it comes to buying something we have them write a list, alongside columns labelled must have, nice to have and not important, with the reasons for why they want to buy the item. It is amazing that when they take the time to complete this task, how often they self decide not to purchase (which is often a win). If the decision is to purchase, then have them calculate how much money will be leftover. Teaching children these simple rules provides important, valuable insights into the value of money. As always keep smiling, take care and if you have any questions email me les@futureproof.com.au 20

Defining success

GET IT I CAREER

uccess means different things to different people. For some, it is a home by the water or a Ferrari in the driveway, but for me, success involves choosing exactly what it is that I want to achieve and then putting a plan in place to achieve it. In other words, success, for me, is the freedom to choose. Sounds simple, right? Why then is it so difficult to identify what success looks like from both a career and life perspective? How many people in your workplace do you know who have a clear picture of what success looks like? Success does not magically appear as a result of good luck. Success must be pursued systematically and relentlessly through the alignment of passion, focus, resilience, determination and sheer hard work. Over the 20 years I have spent working in organisations and coaching leaders, I have observed that there are a number of consistent traits and behaviours that high achievers display. They are relentless in the pursuit of their goals and are prepared to work exceptionally hard to achieve them. They display high levels of self-motivation and focus on the task at hand. They have the ability to bounce back from setbacks and are open to feedback particularly when it helps their cause. Most importantly, they have a clear vision of what success means to them. Regardless of what you do or where you sit in the company you work for, the first step you need to take is to create your own compelling definition of success. This is the starting point that will ultimately provide you with direction. Although you may have previously done this, when was the last time you truly reflected upon it? As mentioned, successful people have a vision and a journey map to help them achieve what they want from their working lives. And your career is no different. If you take December 2019

As we welcome 2020, Bruce Harkness teaches us how to find our own version of success

time to develop these behaviours, you will have an opportunity to further increase your chances of achieving success. Take a moment now to ask yourself and to reflect upon the question: what is your definition of success? Once you have crafted your definition of success it will be a lot easier for you to set objectives that will move you towards it. Be sure to set the bar high, as this is a great opportunity to move you closer to reaching your full potential. We are living in what is often referred to as a ‘VUCA’ world —a world in which there are high levels of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Now, more than ever before, it is important to avoid stagnation in your career at all costs, as stagnation and complacency are the ultimate evil for the knowledge worker. Achieving any level of success requires sustained drive and momentum. Developing the ability to be solutions-focused, to keep learning and evolving, being prepared to change, and having the courage to explore new opportunities and maintain an open mind to deal with significant challenges, are all critical skills to cultivate. As Albert Einstein said:“The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them.” 22

In terms of creating a successful career I have identified 12 key points that will greatly enhance both your enjoyment of work and your chances of success. l Get to know yourself: the good, bad and ugly. l Identify what it is you are passionate about. l Develop a career and life plan. l Ensure your values and personal brand are fully aligned. l Continue to learn and challenge yourself. l Reinvent always. l Develop confidence and self-belief. l Build your resilience. l Look to the future, identify trends, fail fast and take risks. l Apply a positive mindset and never compromise your own values. l Learn from experience; failure is a natural part of the journey. l Strive to be the best possible version of yourself each and every day.

d husband, Allister. Jan with her belove

sat down with Jan two days after the Groundwater Country Music Festival won gold in its category of Festivals and Events at the 2019 Queensland Tourism Awards, and in the midst of her big move from CEO of Broadbeach Alliance to Major Events Gold Coast. This is what she had to tell us… Kathleen: When you became CEO of Broadbeach Alliance, you brought the experience of running your own very successful company. Can you tell us a little bit about that transition? Jan: When I came into Broadbeach Alliance, I reviewed everything that the organisation was doing, and then set a strategy so I could gauge all the stakeholders within the precinct, and the product, which was just Blues on Broadbeach then, and get them to have ownership of it . [This] would in turn [build] that enthusiasm, which created the tribe and fans that continue to come today… J: Also, the team; I know from vast experience that you must surround yourself with the best possible team… I have a lot of that team still with me, so it’s exciting that they’ve stayed, and that they’ve seen both Blues on Broadbeach and Groundwater [Country Music Festival] grow to such an extent that they have taken out national tourism awards over the weekend. K: Would you say those are your team’s biggest accomplishments? J: In regards to the team, when I took on Blues on Broadbeach,

The maestrobehind the music Darryl Kelly (Chairman Major Events Gold Coast), Jan McCormick (CEO Major Events Gold Coast) and Josh Martin (CEO Connecting Southern Gold Coast).

Get it’s Kathleen Loxton catches up with Jan McCormick, the inaugural CEO of Major Events Gold Coast and mastermind behind some of the Gold Coast’s greatest events

there were real questions [regarding] its viability and its sustainability, and with the team we turned that around. We went from attracting, I suppose, 50,000 people to over 200,000 this year [2019]. Of those 200,000, about 58 per cent of those people were coming from interstate or overseas, and they’re coming to stay, and they’re spending big dollars. So, that’s a huge accomplishment! J: … We love Blues don’t get me wrong, we absolutely love and adore it, and we’re changing the sort of music we’re playing so we’re attracting a younger crowd, and we have great strategies for it moving forward... But Groundwater is a baby, seven years old, so Blues has been going for 18, [and] Groundwater took out gold for the 2018 festival… It’s an absolute delight because we’ve taken that from nothing and developed it ourselves. Who would have thought a country music festival that’s based by the beach in a CBD area can generate the crowds that we do — and can now be regarded in the top five country events in Australia. K: I believe there’s even more news: Major Events Gold Coast has appointed you CEO recently, can you tell us a bit about that new challenge? J: The challenge is the thing that really excites me. Now Blues and Groundwater here at Broadbeach Alliance are well embedded; they have great plans, great strategies, all the things [required] to bring on new events, and to work with other events that will be coming into December 2019

Major Events Gold Coast from both Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise Alliances and Connecting Southern Gold Coast. K: Throughout this experience, is there a particular lesson that has stuck with you? J: Surround yourself with the best possible team you can, they will get the job done. It’s my role to direct and guide them… I couldn’t be more proud of my team. K: People make the difference! J: Yes, in all things in life to be honest. K: Personally, is there any organisation tips or strategies you like to use? J: I always make sure I listen to what people have to say, their ideas and their input. I never dismiss anything until I’ve given it great consideration; it doesn’t matter if it’s someone junior, someone external or a fan, I listen because you can learn so much from other people. K: What’s been the highlight? J: When I see the sense of achievement on everyone’s faces once the festival has been delivered and it’s really worked, and there’s been no issues, no hassles. Everyone is exhausted, but they’ve just got that glint in their eyes, saying,“We did it!” J: It’s that teamwork, teamwork, teamwork, that makes it all happen... whether it’s the cleaners helping us keeping the site clean, through to the stage managers, everyone has a job to do… it’s poetry in motion. K: What are your future goals? J: Bringing all the entities of the Gold Coast together to amalgamate into one organisation… delivering beyond expectations, and re-engaging and attracting lots of great events to the city. 26

Bourjois, Eye Catching Nude palette $28, priceline.com.au

#youcandoit 1. Choose three colours Don’t: Get overexcited and throw everything on at once. Do: Choose one light, one medium, and one darker tone. This could be a pale gold, copper, and rusty red. Or a vanilla, latte and chocolate brown. Or pink, cobalt blue and navy. You get the idea. 2. Colour wash Apply the lightest shade all over your lid with a fluffy brush. This is called a ‘colour wash’. 3. Medium shade comes next

Real Techniques, Summer Nights Brush Set, $49, realtechniques.com.au

Apply the medium shade to add ‘shape’ and dimension to your eye. Sweep a little under your lower lash line for a soft smokey look, (this will really open up your eyes). Swoosh a little through your socket (sticking to the outer two-thirds of your eye). Blend with a clean fluffy brush. 4. And apply the darkest shade last Apply the darker shade to the outer corner of your eye, in a little ‘>’ shape. Run a little under the outer third of your lower lash line, joining it to the upper third of your upper lash line. 5. The sparkle Choose that sparkly, shimmery, amazing colour that’s screaming to be worn, and dab her in the middle of your eyelid for that extra festive season pop.

GET IT I HEALTH

A

scent

FOR THE SEASON

Fragrance is always a popular choice at Christmastime – but how to choose the right one? Skincare pro Holly Bartter shares five scentsational strategies ragrances can be highly personal, and highly polarising — for some of us, finding the perfect fragrance means a lifelong love affair. Considering all of this, choosing a fragrance to gift is taking on a challenge. By arming yourself with the know-how to select the right scent every time, you’ll soon find options for anyone and everyone on your giftlist this festive season. Note-able scents All scents are made of a top, middle and base note. Top notes will be the first blast that hits your senses when you smell and will often evaporate quickly. Middle notes form the main part of the perfume, evolving on the skin and becoming noticeable perhaps a few minutes into the scent after spraying, and base notes may not be evident until 30 minutes or so into your day if you spritz in the morning. Two wonderful resources are fragrantica. com or basenotes.net — here, you can explore different and unusual notes, and find fragrances that include these or showcase particular scents, like peony or leather.

Skin compatibility Don’t be fooled by the initial spray (which often has a heavy hit of alcohol) and give yourself time to test the fragrance on your skin, where your chemistry will mingle with the scent. It won’t be an exact match for your giftee but try at least 30 minutes wear of a test spray (remember, don’t rub the scent into your skin as it changes the way it develops), and see if you still like it. Does it fade away after a few minutes? Is it far too strong in a lift or office? Consider these points before you purchase. Do your due diligence For the person you’re gifting — subtly investigate their fragrance style. Do they often smell shower-fresh (look for notes of lemon, white florals or musk)? Do they only wear fragrances on evenings out (try patchouli, vanilla or smokier options)? Do they reapply during the day? Perhaps an eau de toilette (a lighter, softer version of the fragrance). Great gifts come in small packages Remember, when making your final purchase, go for a small 30ml or 50ml. It’s unlikely for someone to move through

WIN 20,000

fragrances quickly, and if they love it and seek out another bottle, an even better compliment to your selection. Fragrances for him and her Where at one point there were very clear distinctions between what constitutes a men’s fragrance vs a women’s fragrance, these days the lines are blurred. Many women are enjoying exploring muskier, smokier or woodier scents (like oud or cedar) that used to be more exclusively included in men’s fragrance; and brands are recognising that we more concerned with something that works with our skin chemistry. If all else fails, ask the sales team at your favourite fragrance-selling store about the popular scents of the moment — they’re trendy for good reason. And if you’re struggling with too many options, go for something classic and crowd-pleasing, even if it’s not a ground-breaking new scent, they will always find a place and time to enjoy it. Purchasing a fragrance from Chempro is the perfect way to get an entry in the draw to win the $20k cash.

$ CASH THIS CHRISTMAS Simply spend $25 or more instore (excluding prescriptions) to enter the draw.

Competition closes Tuesday 24th December 2019.

GET IT I WELLBEING

Krissy Jewell explains how to use pain to identify the need for change and boost your own wellbeing

o you ever feel like you’re faced with people from the past, cycles, situations and bad habits repeating; your boundaries being pushed? Change could be in the wind. If you’re feeling unsettled, anxious, depressed, or isolated, identify when you feel like this: in your relationships, with family or yourself? These feelings can be red flags, indicators that things are ‘not right’ and that change is needed. Often, when enough is enough, change is forced upon you. Are you there yet — should you act before enough is enough? I have been to the depths of pain many times. I used to wear my pain as my trophy; the more pain I experienced, the deeper meaning I attached to it. This behaviour was deeply ingrained from my childhood and I eventually realised that I had to change it. How to acknowledge and identify the need to change before it gets ‘so bad’: l Recognise your triggers, the indicators in your body. l Take time out to STOP thinking, and start feeling; sit with your body and listen. December 2019

l Notice the emotions in your body as they arise and the situation(s) you are in. l Explore why those feelings have surfaced. l Check in with your body and notice if you have any aches, pains, congestion and explore what this may be related to (our trapped emotions can manifest into our physical body). Through quiet reflection we can determine where pain stems from. This is where you can begin turning pain into purpose, freeing yourself from the lesson that needs to be learned. Turning pain into purpose: Identify the lessons — what is this trying to teach you that is positive, relates to you and your future? Give thanks for the lesson and forgive those involved — that’s the starting point. Embrace selfcare habits that make you feel nurtured and loved. Engage in positive energy activities like dancing, listening to music and laughing with friends. Grounding activities like yoga, meditation or even a walk in the park will really help too. When in survival mode (or on automatic response), we tend to not nourish and care for ourselves. It’s very easy to fall out of alignment with what 36

Through quiet reflection we can determine where pain stems from. This is where you can begin turning pain into purpose, freeing yourself from the lesson that needs to be learned. your physical and emotional self needs. When you are aligned with who you are, you’ll be responsive rather than reactive. Bringing consciousness to your thoughts, feelings and actions will enable you to start to take back control of your life and turn your pain into purpose. Boasting a gorgeous range of gentle, yet incredibly effective products, Bohemian Skin has revolutionised the standard skincare regime by providing a range that works for everybody, for life!

DISCOVERING BOHEMIAN SKIN On the lookout for a new, natural skincare routine to take into 2020? Look no further than Australian skincare brand, Bohemian Skin

ust because our skin changes throughout our life, it doesn’t mean our skincare regime has to. Australia has a saturated skincare market of both international and local brands, both chemically-infused and ‘natural’ — all promising miracle solutions to skincare concerns. In an industry that preys on insecurity, it comes with no surprise that the average person could use multiple personal care products per day. What is a nasty surprise, however, is that when combined with the addition of perfumes, we can place hundreds of individual chemicals on our skin each day through cosmetic use. Considering that our skin is our largest organ, it is alarming to think about what happens to those chemicals when they are absorbed into the epidermis. Australian skincare brand, Bohemian Skin, have developed a trusty range of skincare products that we can rely on throughout our lives. From combating acne during puberty, to pregnancy-related skincare concerns, and skin ageing later in life, the ethical team at Bohemian Skin have developed a cruelty free, chemically free, no fuss skincare range that’s perfect for all skin types — from sensitive to acne prone. Suitable for use throughout our entire life cycle (even during breast-feeding!), Bohemian Skin have pioneered a range of natural and vegan friendly skincare products that will revolutionise the way you think about skincare. The Bohemian Skin journey started with Australian skincare aficionado and mother,

Morgan Littler. Morgan was constantly on the hunt for the holy grail of beauty products, after battling common skin troubles and growing concerned that she was compromising her general health by using the chemically-infused skincare products widely available in Australia. When she fell pregnant in 2015, Morgan had more to protect than just herself. It was then that her passion and obsession with safe and natural skincare was amplified. After searching tirelessly for a skincare regime suitable and effective during pregnancy, breastfeeding and beyond, Morgan began formulating concepts for her ideal skincare product range, and with the encouragement of her husband, Keenan, and the support of a team of ethical cosmetic, bio and quality control chemists, the Bohemian Skin journey took flight. Launched in April 2016, Bohemian Skin was proudly one of the first brands in Australia to market their range as pregnancy suitable. Containing only good ingredients that look after your skin, Bohemian Skin also looks after others by donating 10 cents from every product sale to the very worthy charity PANDA (the Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Association). Boasting a gorgeous range of gentle, yet incredibly effective products, Bohemian Skin has revolutionised the standard skincare regime by providing a range that works for everybody, for life! The lush range of pregnancy-suitable products provided by Bohemian Skin include: a Gel Cleanser (150ml, $32 RRP) that 37

promotes clarity and youthfulness with the hero ingredients of hempseed oil, coconut water, witch hazel and lactic acid; a safe and natural Purifying Toner (200ml, $28 RRP) that assists in the removal of blemish causing bacteria, while refining pores and balancing PH levels to reveal a clarified and radiant complexion; a nourishing Facial Moisturiser (100ml, $37 RRP) that promotes clarity and hydration without leaving skin feeling greasy or shiny; a Rejuvenating HY C Serum (30ml, $52 RRP) that fights free radical damage and encourages cell renewal; a Bright Eyes Cream (15ml, $34 RRP) that brightens, firms, hydrates and nourishes the eye area; a Spot Assist Treatment (15ml, $32 RRP) that banishes blemishes and includes colloidal sulphur, which boasts anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and is effective in drawing out impurities and cleansing pores; and a hydrating Facial Mask (150ml, $32 RRP) which contains kaolin clay as a natural, gentle exfoliant that purifies pores, removes excess oil and evens skin tone. With five-star reviews and 100 per cent of customers saying that they would recommend Bohemian Skin to others, it is clear that Bohemian Skin have created an Australian made and owned, cruelty free, natural and vegan friendly skincare range that all Australians can rely on. HOW TO EXPERIENCE

PARIS

LIKE A

PARISIENNE Lisa Hammoum puts a spotlight on the City of Love – a favourite December destination for travellers from all over the world

Christmas in Paris, by Sephanie LaBlanc, Unsplash

hen you think of Paris, I’m sure any number of clichés spring to mind; the language of love, passionate arguments on cobbled streets and of course, that accent. While some of these clichés may ring true there’s so much more to this magical city. From the ‘je ne sais quoi’ atmosphere (quite literally meaning a quality that can’t be described) to the iconic lampposts that encapsulate Paris’ identity, this city is meant to be experienced in all its wonder and most importantly, like a local. While the call of the Eiffel Tower, boat cruises down the river Seine and the architecture of the Louvre shouldn’t be ignored, the most fun to be had is by experiencing Paris like a true Parisienne. Here, I’ve put together a list from my most recent trip on where to go and what to eat if you’re to thrive as a Franco-local. WHEN TO EAT IN PARIS My first important need-to-know is the eating ‘schedule’ in Paris. There are two distinct serving times, lunch is typically from 12 until 2.30pm and dinner around 8 to 11pm. Late, I know, but their local bistros and brasseries are worth experiencing December 2019

‘al-fresco’ under the twilight sky. Even in winter, many spaces are heated, to allow you to indulge in the full experience. A lot of restaurants close between lunch and dinner so if you’re hungry in between, your best bet is a patisserie or bakery for a sumptuous baguette. WHERE TO EAT LIKE A PARISIENNE Nothing says authentic French food quite like duck confit. Just a stone’s throw away from riverside views and Notre Dame is a little nook of a family-run restaurant with al fresco outdoor dining, La Grange Aux Canards. They specialise in duck and

each dish is crafted around it. Try their signature duck confit dish with sautéed potatoes cooked in duck fat and heaps of garlic, alongside a green salad with balsamic vinaigrette. Each mouthful is moreish… WHERE TO EXPERIENCE PARISIENNE DECADENCE If you’re after true Parisienne decadence your first port of call must be Angelina. A tea house dating back 120 years with the opulence of the 1900s to boot. In 1903, confectioner Anton Rumpelmayer founded Angelina with his son Rene at no. 226, Rue Shopping in Paris by Tristan Colangelo, Unsplash

de Rivoli. In years gone past right up to the present day, the charm and expertise with pastries has made Angelina the ‘it’ spot with elite fashion circles. It was also once the favourite hot chocolate spot of Coco Chanel. If in doubt on what to order, your Parisienne trip wouldn’t be complete without a taste of their infamous Millefeuille — caramelised puff pastry slices interspersed with light vanilla crème. WHERE TO DISCOVER Tucked away in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, discover the shabby chic area of Oberkampf. Perfect for an afternoon of browsing old craft workshops, street art and record shops. It’s a place awash with excitement and buzz as grungy streets meet pop-up delights. While you are there, head to the Marche des Enfants Rouges, the city’s oldest market dating back to 1615, lined with food stalls full of fragrant treats. Paris is a perfect idea, no matter what the season. Christmastime, however, sees several stunning festive markets come to life across the city. If you’re inspired, there’s never been a better time to plan your trip. 39

GET IT I DATING

M

e h t T E E

Y L I M A F

Having worked with more than 10,000 singles, Get it’s Love Guru and Ideal Introductions Matchmaker Linda Prescott knows the secrets of how to ace that first meeting

o, you’ve been dating for a while now and you’ve come to that point where you’re ready for your partner to meet the family. But you have no idea on how to tackle this. Because honestly, let’s face it: some families can be a little intimidating and your partner could be feeling nervous about taking the next step. A first impression, after all, is a lasting impression, potentially shaping the quality of future interactions, according to Rabin and Schrag’s psychology research. So how can we do it in a way that makes everyone comfortable? Wonderful ways to introduce your new partner to the family Keep it short Okay, as much as you want to introduce your partner to the fam over dinner like in those Hollywood movies, perhaps opting for the brief chance meeting is safer. Start with your partner dropping you off or picking you up at family gatherings, so they can say a quick “Hello” a few times. Then from there, invite your partner for relaxed events, like barbeques or a brunch. Keeping the first meeting to an hour or two is most ideal, as going beyond that will stress your partner out and create potential awkward moments. Brief him on the family dynamics You know how every family has that nosy aunt? Or that sister or brother whom you wished had a filter? Yes. Brief your partner on the family dynamics and their quirks, so they know not to take some people or questions and statements too seriously. You don’t want to scare your partner into thinking your family is downright scary, but you do want them to know how to handle different personalities December 2019

40

differently. Sometimes family members can come on a little too strong because they are over eager to learn more about your partner. During this process, some unfiltered questions could be asked, so you need to get your partner ready for this possibility. Bring a little gift Nothing sets the mood better than showing up at the door with a little gift for the family. Think a nice bottle of wine or maybe your mum’s favourite flowers, or your dad’s favourite cake. Bringing a gift is almost like a peace offering and it is the perfect opportunity to show how thoughtful your partner is. Stay away from certain topics Of course, it’s great to finally have a good chat with the fam. After all, this is your partner’s chance to show how they think and let their personality shine through. But beware. Religion, politics and finances are the normal no-go zones for first family meeting conversations, as a lot of people find these topics boring and the risk of saying something offensive is also high. Imagine your partner passionately dissing a political party or a cause that your parents actually strongly support. Awkward! At the same time, you also need to prepare your family. Tell them that past relationships are off limits. You don’t want your mum still gushing about your ex. The past belongs in the past and your family needs to respect that. Introducing your partner to your kids If you have children and feel that it’s time for your partner to meet the precious people in your life, you need to be aware of this: in some cases, kids can see the new love interest as a rival. So, for starters, keep the affection to a minimum and give your kids the reassurance that you have plenty of love to go around. You might also want to brief your partner on the hobbies or activities that your kids enjoy. Don’t overdo it — kids can smell these things a mile away. Show enough interest to establish that common ground and start from there. Relax Most importantly, tell both your partner and your family to relax. It’s not your wedding yet! It’s just the first opportunity for both sides to get to know each other. Don’t scare your partner, leave the family baggage behind and encourage a positive environment. Keep it light, respectful and fun. Good luck!

Photography: Foote Prints Photography. Follow them on Instagram (@footeprintsphotography) and Facebook (footeprintsphotographygoldcoast). Rustic Image, Instagram: @Rustic_image Ashleigh Coral Makeup, Instagram: @ashleighcoralmakeup

Kathleen: Hi both! Ashleigh, I understand you work as a make-up artist, under Ashleigh Coral Makeup, and your partner, Joseph, is a woodworker, whose business is Rustic Image. Can you describe how your beautiful blended family came together? Ashleigh and Joseph: We met through social media after each of us had been separated for quite some time. We both had the same concerns regarding how the children would react and feel upon meeting each of us, how they would adapt to another father/ mother figure entering into their lives, and if they would feel comfortable or uneasy. However, the boys adapted surprisingly well with absolutely no dramas at all, it was like they had known each other their whole lives. K: What do you wish you'd known about blended families? A & J: We both wish we would’ve known how to successfully blend the two families via co-parenting and routine. It’s not always easy having been in different households, but when we all get together the most rewarding thing for us is the joy and love the boys bring to each other, and how their little faces light up when they see each other — plus the love they give us as a whole. K: What's your advice for working around two families becoming one, including differences in parenting styles? 41

A & J: Our advice for any other blended family trying to blend as one, is to communicate and respect all parties involved and coparent to keep on top of important issues regarding the children. Communication is key! K: What's the biggest lesson this process has taught you? A & J: The biggest lesson this has taught us both is, again, communication and respect! It isn’t easy trying to blend families together with young children involved, so be as easy going and pleasant with all parties involved (once again) and it will be a smooth transition/adaptation.

In Georgia’s words Georgia Barnes of MasterChef fame now calls the Gold Coast home. She features as our December cover star and has shared some of her favourite recipes with us for this special season I’ve always loved food. Growing up I was fascinated by the veggie patch, always helping in the kitchen, making my own little menus – it’s been a lifelong thing for me. I love cooking anywhere! I’m a bit of a chameleon like that. But I think cooking outdoors when you’re camping is so much fun: fresh air, the view, no fuss. The limitations in ingredients and equipment are always a good challenge too. As far as being inspired by destinations though, I’m yet to travel to India and Sri Lanka. They’re on my list for learning and experiencing a food culture that’s so exciting and vibrant! My career has seen several highlights, but MasterChef is hard to beat because of how much it changed my life. I’m so grateful for the learning and opportunities that have come my way. I’ve met many amazing people on this journey and in the industry, and I’m really inspired by those people who are changing the way we approach food agriculture; those bringing awareness to how and what we eat. I aim to continue to bring my love for food and nutrition to a wide audience, and especially here to my new home. Making the move to the Gold Coast was something I’d always wanted to do and I’m so happy that I did it. Things always seem to fall into place when you follow your heart! The months ahead are busy for me, with some exciting projects in the pipeline while I continue working at Eden Health Retreat Currumbin as one of the resident chefs and food educators. I’m hoping to meet many of you and talk all things food at The Craft Parlour in Miami and The Kitchens at Robina. If you’d like to drop by, my last classes for the year will be at The Kitchens Robina on Saturday 14 December (10am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm). I’ll be teaching how to make your own creamy ice-cream without a churner – perfect for summer! If we don’t meet this year, keep an eye on my website and social media for what’s coming up in 2020: georgiabarnes.com.au, Facebook and Instagram @georgiabarnesau.

Why goal setting

doesn’t work anymore

ave you ever set a ‘SMART’ goal? That’s been the gold standard for goal setting, but it doesn’t even come close to helping you achieve a goal. Even a drunken New Year’s Resolution — say, that you’ll finally lose that 10 kilograms of excess weight this year — could be a SMART goal: it’s specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based. But as we all know with New Year’s Resolutions, most of them don’t survive to the end of January! Goal setting is easy — ridiculously easy. The real problem is with goal getting. In our fast-changing world, the future is unclear, the changing environment constantly throws out new obstacles, and the goalposts keep changing along the way. That’s why we need new rules now for achieving our goals. Make it a project, not a goal A project is a small, clearly-defined job. Like a goal, it has an outcome, but it also has a clear plan attached to it. Sending a man to the moon was a goal; each space flight during that time was a project. Even if you’re not taking moon-shots, work on 90-day projects rather than 12-month goals. That’s long enough to do something significant, but short enough to know the world won’t change too much around you. Test it fast Don’t spend the first three weeks planning, strategising, and optimising your goal. As soon as possible, test it! Approach a few customers, build a prototype, try out a ‘beta’ version of the idea, publish a few pages of your book

December 2019

as a blog post, start the new eating plan immediately, and so on. Your project only runs for 12 weeks, and you can’t afford to wait until Week 10 to discover you’re on the wrong track. Test it, assess the results, tweak your approach, and try again. Take a leaf from Google’s book. Gmail was in ‘beta release’ (that is, not officially a product) for five years before Google officially ended its beta status in 2009. By that time, it already had hundreds of millions of active users, who had the benefit of using Gmail, but also provided invaluable feedback to Google. Make a plan With only 12 weeks, you don’t need complex project planning software to plan and run the project. Map out the entire project — week by week — on a big sheet of paper, a simple Excel spreadsheet, or a whiteboard. It’s easy to visualise and easy to track. Share it with your team, and make it visible and prominent throughout the 90 days. Set rules and build habits Hard work, discipline, and motivation can help, but another factor trumps all of them: habits. Habit trumps discipline because you’re not relying on motivation and inspiration. You don’t need discipline to brush your teeth or wear a seatbelt, do you? Apply the same principle to your project. Build habits by setting rules for when and where you will work on it, for example: l “When I wake up each day, I will write another 500 words.”

46

l “At the start of the weekly team meeting, we’ll spend 10 minutes sharing interesting ideas we have seen that week.” l “When I pull out my phone to check social media, I will first read an article from my saved bookmarks.” l “Every Tuesday morning from 9-10am, I will have meetings with the people I mentor.” Imagine how you could fail Traditional goal setting urges you to imagine success in all its glory. But that’s too optimistic for a fast-changing world. Instead, imagine what might go wrong, so you can plan for it. In Harvard Business Review in 2007, Gary Klein described a process he and colleagues devised: a “pre-mortem”. In a medical postmortem, the surgical team analyses what went wrong so they can prevent future deaths. In a pre-mortem, before the project starts, imagine your project has failed after 90 days, identify what went wrong, and then add these obstacles, mistakes, and missteps to your project plan. How will YOU set — and get — your next goal? Boxer Mike Tyson said,“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.'' In our fast-changing world, there are so many things that could punch us in the face! But these principles will help you stay on track, so you can set — and, more importantly, get — your goals!

HOW TO

successfully co-parent AFTER SEPARATION Family Lawyer Fiona Browne offers guidance on where to start with co-parenting arrangements

he term ‘coparenting’ is everywhere. It’s even the go to phrase for Hollywood celebrities — Google it and you’ll find a multitude of glowing statements from celebs talking about their “successful coparenting arrangements”. Unfortunately, for many clients I meet, the picture is not so glossy. It can take years to structure a successful co-parenting arrangement after separation. Before assuming the celebrity picture of co-parenting will apply to your situation, take a step back and consider that to coparent successfully, there needs to be cooperation. Not always easy if there is animosity over the circumstances of separation. As a family lawyer, I have seen the significant impact that separation has on children. For parents to successfully co-parent, if possible, you need to put animosity aside and find respect. Focus on the child and your role as parent and design a cooperative postseparation parenting arrangement early. I deal with clients who are feeling hurt and betrayed. This can lead to reaching for unrealistic objectives and a desire to punish the other parent. Sometimes they’ll not recognise problems with the parenting dynamics or exhibit aggressive behaviour with little insight into their role as a parent. When a client exhibits these behaviours, my role is to help them refocus on the parenting relationship and the best interests of the children. Section 60B of the Family Law Act states that the best interests of children are met by: l ensuring they have the benefit of both of their parents having meaningful involvement in their lives l protecting them from physical or psychological harm l ensuring they receive adequate and proper parenting to help them achieve their full potential l ensure parents fulfil their duties and meet their responsibilities concerning the care, welfare and development of their children. Well prior to lawyers or Family Courts getting involved, separated parents should communicate with each other as to how 47

they will successfully co-parent their children. My best advice: l Discuss issues in a respectful manner. Be empathetic to the other parent — they may not be in the same place as you emotionally. l Take time to reflect on the other parent’s views. l Don’t take issue with every issue. Pick your battles. l Agree what issues are important and make a list. l Go through each issue and discuss fully — explore possible

options. l Attempt to reach an agreement — look at your ex as a co-

parent and respect that the children should have time with both parents. l Put the agreement in writing. Sign and date it — make it formal. But remember, as children grow and have different needs, there may need to be changes. Ongoing communication is vital. l Communicate clearly with the other parent about issues or changes to arrangements. Parents need to be on the same page. l If the co-parenting arrangement falls apart, engage an independent third party to mediate any disputes to get you back on track. Importantly, seek help at an early stage. There are private psychologists and community-based support services available. Everyone needs someone independent to give a ‘reality check’ when emotions are involved. And remember that children come from both parents. If you, as a parent, continually denigrate the other parent, this will cause the children to reflect on their own value, as they are made up of two parents, not one. Being positive about the other parent (even if you are not really feeling it at the time), will go a long way to helping your children adjust to their new normal. Sagittarius November 22 – December 22

Resolutions around money, how you earn it, how you spend it and what IS value, is a yearlong enquiry offering great opportunity and growth. Doing the maths, create new forms of income, or just become more constrictive on your willingness to part with your hardearnt cash. It’s all about money and what you do with it and why. It could end up being a proverbial gold mine. Looking after the pennies, means the pounds look after themselves.

Capricorn December 22 – January 20 Aries March 20 – April 19 December offers new opportunities and resolute decisions around how you present to the world; your physical body and vitality, how you want to be received, and aligning yourself, for greater recognition. Being seen front and centre, is where new resolutions start. With Jupiter entering your sign for the first time in 12 years, you have a whole year to master being thrust upon the spotlight. Be ready.

Aries have never been shy about goals and ambitions, but this month the resolutions come in thick and fast. Jupiter moving into Capricorn triggers more long-term plans for resolutions around career, reputation and status. Adjustments to long-term rather than short-term results, come into focus as end game plans begin to form. Slow and steady may be the key for career wins and recognitions.

December begins with a journey, and problem solving the root cause of any struggle or stress will benefit you greatly. Resolutions solidifying and remedying any stress or pressure in your private worlds are supported. All in preparation, for future Aquarius’ time in the sun, and for positive expansions.

Suddenly December feels like it’s slowed down to your kind of pace. Slow, methodical, measured and dignified. Not one to scramble to new resolutions for the hell of it, December creates a new pace that is beneficial to you. Creating commitments or resolutions around longer-term modes of study, or overseas travel, benefit you greatly this month. New teachers may come to you and open new doors.

Aquarius January 21 – February 19

Pisces February 19 – March 20

Resolutions can come in many shapes and forms; for our Pisces friends it will be highlighting your hopes, rewards and social settings. This December you become more committed to moving on from old ambitions and social connections to make way for vibrant and more goal-aligned, positive networks. Jupiter in Capricorn might make the process more clinical than you’re used to, or maybe more obvious. Either way, focus on modification.

Taurus April 20 – May 21

Gemini May 21 – June 21

Becoming focused and resolute on what you want to achieve in the areas of reducing debt and out-going costs may not sound very exciting. But thinking end game, imagine the potential opportunities with all the money and resource you save. Jupiter in Capricorn is like having the world’s best accountant on side. Financial constrictions CAN be liberating. Now is the time to find the resolve.

Cancer

June 21 – July 22

New opportunities for strong and supportive relationships begin this month. Such strong and sharp-shooting partnerships are highlighted as Jupiter enters cool and reliable Capricorn. After a year of challenging situations, finally we enter a year long cycle where strong partnerships allow for supportive opportunities. Any losses will become gains later.

Leo July 22 – August 23

As cliché as it sounds, this month really is an opening for resolutions around health and daily routine. Health and having daily routines come strongly into focus; bringing the Leo slant of fun and vitality will help make this resolution more engaging rather than a chore. Such resolutions are supported at this time and have the potential to have long-lasting impacts. Investigate and commit.

Virgo August 23 - September 22

Creativity and bringing more creative outlets into your life is a New Year’s resolution worth investing in this December. Jupiter brings a supportive influence into your creative life, offering new sources of inspiration and opportunity. From 3 December, your creative life springs into action. When it appears — commit to exploring it.

Libra September 22 – October 23

Connections to your family, ancestors, physical homes or places you’re deeply rooted to, become more vibrant and alive from 3 December. Jupiter offers a great boost, after two years of having great challenges in this area of life. Optimism and faith become more dominant energy, helping elevate the restriction and challenges that you have faced.

Scorpio October 23 – November 22

Resolutions around writing, communications or internet-based communications (courses, forums or groups) creates great opportunities for increased knowledge and creativity. Making it part of your daily routine and ritual is key. Once integrated, new worlds, creative havens, ideas or belief structures, help create a wonderful anchor to your day to day life.
