FESTIVAL

es, I’m back at the helm for another festive season and I hope I can stay awake to see the New Year. What on earth happened to 2018? Months fly by, the hamster wheel keeps turning, we face challenges (as if it’s impossible to dodge them); the kids grow, the wrinkles are a little more noticeable, and you realise you haven’t spent as much time with your friends as you should have. You look in the mirror and ask, ‘Where have I been?’ ‘What have I done in this past year that has helped someone, made a difference, given me satisfaction or made me happy?’

Graze on the Green

Personally, the end of 2018 is a celebration, as I know that with the New Year will come new beginnings. We’ve all said it, whether last year, the year before, or maybe this year: ‘I’ll be so glad to see the end of this year’. We’ve all had ‘stuff’ to deal with and the thought of a fresh start gives us renewed energy and hope.

Sunday, 27th January 2019

A word of caution — don’t be too quick to push the past 12 months behind you. I’ve learnt that by embracing the past you have an opportunity to understand the lessons that it has taught you. For the most part, I see that by experiencing the challenges of emotional and financial roadblocks, we gain a clarity in the ’why’ it happened. Good or bad, we need to embrace the experiences from the past year and learn from them. If I’m honest (and I always am with you), my year has had its ups and significant downs. But it’s given me an even greater sense of appreciation for my family, my friends, my team and the beautiful people that take the time to ask how I am. They are the reason that the New Year gives me the courage to continue, to grow and to be thankful.

Keep the Australia Day party going at our first Graze on the Green – Food Truck Festival… ‘Links Hope Island’ will be transformed into an evening picnic space for families to enjoy delicious food, beer, wine and entertainment. • Feast on a huge selection of the best food trucks in town. • Relaxed entertainment featuring Shane Wilkinson and Gas Grooves as well as a waterslide for the kids.

If you hear me, follow my lead and NEVER make a New Year’s resolution list! Just shake the dust off the runners and prepare to hit 2019 full tilt.

• Bring the family and the rug and settle in for a fun night at Links!

From the Get it girls to you, our wonderful readers and valued clients, we hope that Santa grants your every wish — maybe not the Porsche down the chimney — but you get my drift.

Time: 4pm – 9pm Free Entry. (Strictly no BYO!)

GET THINKING

Unexpected Christmas gifts

— with Nicola George — hristmas is around the corner and I am over the moon! I love the season and the lead up to the big day is better than the day itself. The shopping for gifts, the Christmas carols, putting up the tree, the food and festive tipple (or two), the days off work… Yep, all very worthwhile things to put a smile on my face! What’s not to love? The only thing that daunts me is the unexpected gifts. You know, the gift you get from that someone who you didn’t expect one from, and suddenly you find yourself faced with the dilemma of having to thank them and come up with a lame excuse as to why you didn’t get them something in return. We've all been there, and most likely been on both ends of this social faux par at one time or another. I’ve contemplated giving the “my dog ate your Christmas card” kind of excuse, but only after I exhausted the “oh I left your pressie at the office and I’ll give it to you the next time I see you” story way too many times. Argh, the embarrassment of it all! You know, the “I know we’re friends, but I don’t like you enough to put you on my shopping list, but thanks for the $50 voucher to Myer” kind of thing. They know you didn’t get them anything. Your friends, colleagues, neighbours and stalkers aren’t stupid. So, this year, I have come up with a splendid plan… and I feel rather pleased with myself. A little chuffed in fact! Yesterday I went to my local bottle shop and bought a dozen bottles of average priced wines, a few whites, a few reds and a Moscato (it’s always smart to throw in a wild card!). I put gold Christmassy bows on all of them and put them into pretty gift bags. I’m ready to scramble when the unexpected gifts pop up. And believe me they will! Getting red faced and blubbering out Pinocchio sized excuses will be a thing of the past! This year when I find myself in a gift exchange situation, I will calmly whip out a bottle and hand it over with confidence and a smile. I will be the generous and wonderfully thoughtful friend, the nice coworker and the friendly neighbour. A hero of the gift swap! And any leftover bottles... well, as my gal-friends can attest to, they won’t go to waste! So now as a disclaimer, if you are a friend of mine and you get wine for Christmas, you are the exception to the rule okay; I really did buy that bottle especially for you — honestly, pinky swear.

GONE What really happens behind the headlines, when children are just — gone? Get it’s Hayley Bogaard investigates the truth behind why children go missing

December 2018

12

t happens all too often. We flick on the nightly news, check our Facebook feed on our lunch break or switch on the radio for our drive home and we’re hit with the news of a missing child. And all too often we assume the worst. Words such as ‘abducted’,‘paedophile’,‘stranger’ are so willingly cried out. In some cases it isn’t a word we cry, but a name. Daniel Morcombe. William Tyrell. We conjure an image of terror, hysteria and tragedy. The media feeds the sensationalism, running tender photos of a sweet little child in their school uniform or their favourite t-shirt, beaming brightly from our screens, punctuating the tragedy of the situation. It’s heartbreaking, gut wrenching and terrifying. But is it true? More often than not, it isn’t. In fact, the number of times a child goes missing in Queensland as a result of abduction is extremely low. They are not the scenes from the Hollywood blockbusters of unmarked white vans, weedy strange men and incorrigible vigilante heroes. They are not scenes of heartbroken parents sobbing at press conferences, pleading for the return of their baby. Those scenes can be very real. And when they are, they permeate our lives, and we live the soul crushing heartache along with the family. We cry, we grieve, we demand answers. But if it’s not at the hands of a depraved, perverted stranger, than why is it? What really happens behind the headlines, when children are just — gone? Voluntarily missing The truth is, the large majority of young people who go missing do so voluntarily. They are not abducted and they don’t meet with foul play, they simply run away. According to Trish Halligan,Team Leader in the AFP’s National Missing Persons Coordination Centre,“there are specific risk factors associated with young people going missing, which are particularly prevalent in the 13-17 years of age cohort, such as domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, school problems such as bullying, drug and alcohol use, mental health issues and poor coping skills.”

She explains that often those young people go missing voluntarily as a means of escaping from the pressures of their lives. More often than not, they are found quite quickly at a friend’s house or familiar location. Detective Senior Sergeant Damien Powell of the Queensland Missing Persons Unit highlights that in Queensland, within the 14-16 year age range, missing girls outnumber boys almost two to one. “We see a significantly higher number of girls reported missing in this age bracket than boys, which is likely a result of the emotional and social maturity of girls developing faster than boys.” he explains. But what about in children under the age of 12? Again, in the majority of cases, it is more often a result of the child voluntarily leaving their environment, rather than being forcibly removed. Detective Powell explains that with younger children, it is “often a behavioural response; they are hiding, fearful or simply in an unfamiliar environment and those children are usually located quite quickly.” He explains that regardless of the suspected circumstances surrounding a child going missing, it is always critical to locate them quickly due to the increased risk factors that are present. On the Gold Coast, environmental conditions such as the large number of waterways and busy roads are factors that are taken into close consideration by police. Another circumstance that sees children under the age of 10 reported missing occurs in cases where children are removed from their family home by Child Services and placed in foster care. Given their vulnerable age and undeveloped cognitive sense, they don’t understand the situation and act on an instinctual response to find their parents. So, while the large majority of missing children do, in fact, go missing voluntarily, and are located long before the story makes it to our newsfeeds, there are cases where the circumstances are not so innocuous. Not such a stranger danger Despite the mantra of ‘stranger danger’ being drilled into us from a young age, it is very rare that a stranger takes a child. In fact, in most cases, it is the people who are closest to the child that are responsible for their disappearance: their parents. It can be as simple as a miscommunication. One parent collects the child from school early and forgets to inform the other. One parent gives permission for a sleepover at a friend’s 13

house that the other wasn’t aware of. But at other times, it is more convoluted, a result of an unsavoury custody or family dispute. One parent feels that they are not provided adequate time with the child and choses to rectify that without the consent of the other. Or, perhaps, they have had a conflict with the other parent and take the child out of spite. In the cases of custody disputes, the situation is most often treated as a parental abduction, irrelevant whether the person taking the child has lawful custody or not. In some instances, a parent will employ the services of a private investigator to assist in locating the child or gathering information about the child’s living conditions. Guy Streeter, a private investigator with Timberline Investigations on the Gold Coast, sees the dark side of parental disputes all too often and explains that in those cases, they aren’t generally criminal matters but are the result of Family Court proceedings. “Often times, one parent is trying to get sole custody of the child because the other parent is neglecting the child or is not in a suitable environment to raise the child,” he explains. “Also to this, sometimes the reason is because the parent with full custody of the child is claiming that they do not work and need a significant amount for child support. “Often they will leave the child with the grandparents or friend while they go to work and collect a cheque for work and child support as well.” But sometimes, it can be an arduous and extended process, long before it even reaches the steps of the Family Court. “We have been brought in on one case involving the Australian Federal Police, that had run cold,” Guy recounts.

“The truth is, the large majority of young people who go missing do so voluntarily.”

December 2018

“The mother had run away with her daughter and both had been missing for a couple of years and we were employed to make enquires and provide further leads. “While that didn’t lead anywhere, both the mother and daughter were found recently by the AFP safe.” In the cases of parental abductions, police have immediate access to information about the suspect and can usually locate and recover the child quickly and safely whether it is voluntarily, or through the issue of a Recovery Order by the Family Court. But when the unthinkable does occur and a stranger takes the child, the job of the police is made infinitely more challenging. Taken Despite all the statistics and research that comfort us against the throes of stranger abduction, there are a small number of times when a parent’s worst nightmare is played out. A child is taken by a stranger and disappears without a trace. While it is not an occurrence that is completely absent from our society, human and sex trafficking is far less prevalent than it is in other countries. In fact, in many cases of Australian missing children being located overseas, it is the parent or family who has taken the child to be married or employed. The motivations behind stranger abductions are varying and intrinsic to the individual responsible. Earlier this year, a 12-year-old Gold Coast boy was abducted from outside his Mudgeeraba home, allegedly dragged into a SUV kicking and screaming. The police were quick to release details of the boy and the SUV to the media and a keen-eyed member of the public, who had seen the media reports, spotted the car used in the schoolboy’s abduction and phoned police. As a result, the boy was located the following day in Grafton, NSW. The police said he ‘suffered scratches consistent with being bound’ but did not suffer any major injuries. It was revealed shortly after that the abduction was an extortion attempt, with the family ordered to pay a significant ransom for the boy’s return. Police revealed that there had been a number of personal loans between the boy’s father and a man of Chinese heritage before the demands for money were made. The child, in this case, was nothing more than an innocent pawn in a vindictive business arrangement. And while this time, the child was returned, not all cases end so well. Just three minutes On December 7 2003, thirteen-year-old Daniel Morcombe pulled the front door of his family’s Sunshine Coast home closed behind him, calling to his twin brother that he was catching the bus to nearby Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre to get a haircut and shop for Christmas presents for his family. He waited patiently for the 1.35pm

scheduled bus service, but it never arrived. The bus had broken down, only 750 metres from where Daniel waited and it wasn’t until 2.15pm that the replacement bus approached. Daniel signalled but the driver, under instructions not to stop, continued down the road. He radioed for a second bus to collect those left stranded. Just three minutes later, that second bus reached Daniel’s stop but found it deserted. Daniel Morcombe had vanished without a trace. It had taken just three minutes. The death of Daniel Morcombe needs no introduction. It was one of the most extensively investigated crimes in Queensland history and gripped the Australian public at every heartbreaking twist and turn. The investigation spanned eight years with many leads and theories running cold. It wasn’t until August 2011, following an extensive undercover police operation, that a man was taken into custody and charged with the murder. His name was Brett Peter Cowan. A week after his arrest, two shoes and three human bones were found at a search site in the Glass House Mountains. Forensic testing confirmed that they were the remains of Daniel Morcombe. At the conclusion of the investigation, seventeen bones had been found including a rib, hip, leg, arm and vertebrae. They were all confirmed as belonging to Daniel Morcombe using DNA from his toothbrush to make the match. In February 2014, Brett Peter Cowan stood trial for murder, indecently dealing with a child under the age of 16 and improperly dealing with a corpse. In March 2013, he was found guilty of all charges and sentenced to life in prison. The iconic Spiderman Ask most little boys what they want to be when they grow up and many will gleefully reply,“Spiderman!”They will run around their backyards, shooting pretend spider webs from their wrists and fighting imaginary villains in the name of justice. They wear the iconic blue and red costume proudly and valiantly. But in September 2014, an image of a playful little boy, beaming up at the camera, dressed in the iconic Spiderman suit was splashed across our television screens, flooded our Facebook feeds and stared up at us from the front page of every newspaper. The joyous image quickly became synonymous with heartache and sickening terror. It was a photograph of three-year-old William Tyrrell, taken just minutes before he disappeared without a trace. On September 11, 2014, William Tyrrell played hide and seek in the front yard of his grandmother’s home in Kendall, NSW while his grandmother and mother watched on. His mother went inside to make a cup of tea, laughing as William ran around the corner of the house, imitating a lion’s “roar,” his little clawed hands at the ready. It would be the last time she heard his voice. His mother became worried when, five minutes later, she had not heard him again. The

family searched the home and the surrounding streets, door-knocking at the neighbouring houses. No one had seen or heard him. At 10:56pm, his mother called 000 and reported him missing. The response was swift and extensive. Two hundred volunteers searched overnight, hundreds of people combed rugged terrain around the home and police divers searched waterways and dams. Specialist police, including the Sex Crimes Squad, immediately formed Strike Force Rosann. Motorcycles and helicopters were brought in to search. No trace was found of William Tyrrell. The Australian public followed every step of the story, agonising with his family. The haunting image of little William in his beloved Spiderman suit became a permanent fixture in our everyday lives. The nation hoped, prayed and cried with the Tyrrell family. William’s family faced extensive criticism and scrutiny in the media. William was in foster care at the time of his disappearance and legal reasons bound by the legislation prevented them from being identified publicly or holding any press conferences for the purpose of appealing publicly about their missing son. In 2017, the Supreme Court ruled that the fact he disappeared while in state care with foster parents was "one of legitimate public interest" and the family were finally able to speak out. However, as quickly as the leads developed, they seemed to run cold. The media reported descriptions of two vehicles of interest that were spotted in the area around the time of his disappearance. There were theories of paedophile rings thrown around. A local washing machine repairman was thrust into the spotlight as a suspect. But at every turn, the trail seemed to run cold. Since his disappearance, there have been But this is not a movie It’s a scene straight from a Hollywood blockbuster. A young girl rides her pink and white bike in an empty store car park. A man in a black pickup truck pulls up, forces her off her bike and stuffs her into the cab of the truck. Five days later, her body is found in a rainswollen creek. Her throat is cut. In this movie, justice would prevail. There would be a rugged, vigilante hero played by Liam Neeson, a dramatic car chase played out in front of a green screen and a healthy serving of justice to leave the audience suitably satisfied. But this is not a movie. There is no Liam Neeson and no special effects. And there is certainly no serving of justice. This is the very real story of the abduction and murder of nine-year-old US girl, Amber Hagerman. To this day, Amber’s murder remains unsolved. But in a bittersweet twist of fate, the case has had two diametrically opposed outcomes; one of heartbreak and one of hope. Following their daughter’s murder, Amber’s parents called for tougher laws governing kidnappers and sex offenders.Throughout their campaign, it was highlighted the need for expedited efforts by police to locate abducted children and how the media could facilitate

over 1,070 reported sightings of William Tyrrell. Crime Stoppers have received a record number of over 2,800 calls. Police have interviewed over 1,000 people in connection with the case. They have identified 690 persons of interest. And yet, the beaming little Spiderman remains unfound. In June 2018, police announced a large-scale forensic search in bushland around Kendall to be conducted by search experts from the Public Order and Riot Squad. The Tyrrell family and the Australian public hold on to any hope they can. A good defence As the saying goes, the best offence is a good defence. In the cases of teenagers, establishing an open line of communication and discussing any distressing situations or trouble at home is the best measure to ward off the event of the child running away. In these cases, prevention is the best strategy. Parents should also keep an eye out for signs such as reclusive behaviour,

those efforts. Much like the National Weather Service could interrupt broadcast to inform the public of a severe weather warning, the same could be done for an abducted child. In 1996, the AMBER alert system, named after Amber Hagerman, went nationwide in the US.The system has since been adopted in countries around the world and, in May 2005, the Queensland government was the first state in Australia to implement the system. AMBER Alerts An AMBER alert is a process that involves the urgent broadcast of relevant information through the media in relation to an abducted child or high-risk missing child. The alert is intended for time-critical situations in which a child under the age of eighteen years is reasonably suspected to have been abducted, or there appears to be an imminent risk of death or serious harm to the child. It is irrelevant whether the person suspected of having taken the child has lawful 15

Detective Powell says the best thing the community can do is to protect children is to be aware. “The best thing the community can do is to be vigilant,” he says. “If you have someone else’s child with you, ensure that their parents are aware and have given permission.” And in the case of an AMBER alert, he stresses the importance of the community’s cooperation. “The public should check their home and close surroundings in areas that a child may be able to hide,” he explains. “And if they see anything matching the descriptions given by police, contact them immediately.” Trish Halligan, Team Leader at the AFP’s National Missing Persons Coordination Centre adds that the community should follow their state police service on Facebook and says if they do come across a missing persons report in their newsfeed,“don’t scroll past it if they don’t recognise the person” “While they might not recognise the person, they might have been at that location or seen something that may help,” she says. “It will only take a few seconds to read the report and the smallest piece of information could really help the police in their investigations.” So, next time your stomach drops reading the latest headline of a missing child, rather than gathering the mob with lighted torches and pitchforks and cry for another tragedy, take a moment to consider your surroundings and report any piece of information, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. While the child may be gone, hope is not. custody of the child. Under the system, police will urgently contact the media with relevant information regarding the description of the child, the offender and details of any vehicle involved. Television and radio stations will break into normal transmission with a dedicated alert tone and regularly broadcast these details until the alert is cancelled, instead of waiting for the next news bulletin. But perhaps one of the most powerful tools at investigator’s disposal is Facebook. In 2017, the AFP National Missing Persons Coordination Centre announced a national rollout of the Facebook AMBER Alert system, which works to amplify existing broadcast channels to issue an immediate, 24-hour alert on Facebook to people who are in the area where the child went missing. The Queensland Police Service were one of the earliest adopters of the system before it was rolled out nationally. Since the AMBER alert system was launched across Australia, it has been engaged in six different cases. In each of those six cases, the child has been recovered. Interestingly, each case was a matter of parental abduction. From the gut wrenching injustice of Amber Hagerman’s death has come the hope of saving many more children’s lives.

Fresh Aussie meat cut to order

A slice of paradise When it’s 100% Aussie meat you know you’re onto a good thing.

T

here’s nothing quite like a tender cut of meat cooked to perfection. But this process doesn’t start in the kitchen, or with one of our expert butchers, it starts on the farm with healthy stock and dedicated local farmers. All the fresh meat you’ll find in store comes from right here in Australia. That means with every delicious bite, you’re supporting local Aussie farmers and their communities. And because it’s 100% Aussie, you’re also enjoying some of the finest quality in the world. Prime lamb producer, Cameron Male, is a fourth generation farmer and has worked with Woolworths for over 20 years. He provides us with excellent lamb chops and roasts, all from his farm, Dalrye. Cameron is just one of the farmers around the country, raising the finest stock.

Good farming practices are important to us, which is why all of our Woolworths branded fresh chicken is RSPCA Approved. Once in store, our butchers know just how to bring out the feature flavours and textures. They can even slice your selection of 100% Aussie meat while you wait, so you go home with exactly what you were after. Also, ask for cooking tips while you’re there, so your dish is juicy, tender and packed with flavour.

Keeping children this summer

safe

l Consistency and repetition of children’s swimming lessons are key as swimming is an entirely learnt skill — don’t rely on a few lessons when they get to school!

Water safety, it’s a big issue for parents! ummer is here and keeping kids safe as they enjoy the water is vital. We live in the Sunshine State and one of the best ways to seek relief from the heat is to have a swim. However, for parents, it can be an unnerving time with tragic drownings reported each year. Imagine a summer with zero fatal and nonfatal drownings. This could be possible with all children learning water safety skills, combined with parents and carers constant supervision around water. The most vulnerable are kids under five when it comes to the water, but they can learn lifesaving skills before commencing school! So, how do parents know they have

done everything possible to ensure their children are protected this summer? It starts with dedication. Parents who place value on and prioritise the importance of making their child water aware with strong swimming skills give their child the best chance. Here are some more summer water safety tips to remember: l Always supervise children around any body of water — including baths l Do not hand responsibility to siblings, friends or neighbours when a child has access to a pool or body of water

GET IT I FASHION

‘TIS THE SEASON TO PARTY! Hello fashionistas! Yes, it's here, the silly season, and why not stand out with something a little different? I have a love of pants — wide leg, skinny leg, flared and anything in between! In fact, I wore pants to Derby Day as a judge for Fashions on the Field, and was pleasantly surprised how many fillies stepped out of the box to create a spectacular individual look. Start your party season off with a bang with my top four looks. 1. Pants and pantsuits: I love them all! Look for structure in a pantsuit and remember to balance a wide-leg pant with a fitted top, or a flowing top with a more tailored pant. It's about creating shapes, not squares! 2. Playsuits: These speak summer! Florals, off the shoulder, or a classic block colour, you can have a lot of fun with playsuits. Just add strappy sandals! 3. Colour: Whether you wear a block of colour or add some colourful fab accessories like headwraps, tassels or fringing, you can turn any blank canvas into a masterpiece! 4. Maxi dresses: Who doesn't love this look? Perfect for Christmas Eve, Christmas parties and beach parties. Kaftans tick the box, are easy to wear and, let's face it, are perfect for the over eating and drinking that this time of year brings! Enjoy your silly season and I hope you get every stylish piece you wish for. Have a very merry everything and a happy always!

would like to start by wishing every one of you, dear readers, a fantastic and very Merry Christmas! I hope that the New Year will fulfil all your wishes in good health and happiness. While you’re out doing your Christmas shopping, kindly come and visit my shop and prepare yourselves for surprisingly inexpensive but beautiful presents as well as great outfits — perfect to welcome the festive season in! One of my favourites this month is the ‘Planet’ ocean blue, cerise or white one-size tees! This US label is taking fashion by storm. Once you put it on, you won’t want to take it off — word of honour! Unfortunately, I am on forced leave for two to three weeks at the moment as the lift in my building is being replaced. But my girls, Dianne and Jill, are in store and will attend to all your Christmas wishes. They are knowledgeable and experienced — you will love them as much as I do! So, on that note, I will talk to you all again in 2019 and I wish you a great New Year without dramas, only happiness and joy! Thank you for being my clients and friends.

GET IT I MONEY

Get out of It’s one of the top 10 New Years’ resolutions so Les McGuire MBA ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial is here to help you achieve it once and for all ith the end of year fast approaching, are you getting excited, buying presents for Christmas and preparing for the festive season? Or, is cash flow tight and you’re not sure how to make ends meet? Can you feel the pressure of debt weighing you down? Well you’re not alone. In Australia, we are affected by so many external factors internationally when it comes to inflationary and interest-rate risks. One of the critical issues is that half of the funds that Australian banks borrow is from overseas sources. If American interest rates are increasing, then the cost of funds sourced is more expensive and this results in higher interest rates. Most Australians have the infamous credit

card in their wallets, and while spending money by swiping plastic seems easy at the time, we have to effectively repay the debt. A recent report by ASIC shows that Australians owe $45 billion in credit card debt. More than one in six Australians — around 1.9 million people — are struggling to repay their debt. Repaying debt in the most effective way is a crucial strategy to become debt free faster. So, let’s look at some strategies to reduce the credit card debt faster and free up cash flow. You have a mortgage on your home and, assuming you’re paying 4% interest on the debt, you may have available offset or redraw on your loan. If so, imagine (as scary as it sounds) using the additional repayments to repay credit card or personal debt first. This can save thousands of dollars in unnecessary interest rate repayments and free up that muchneeded cash flow far quicker. Once you have repaid the credit card it’s best to either reduce the available spending limit or cut up the card.

Credit cards can be a significant detriment to financial freedom. There are some credit cards available which have zero percent interest for balances being rolled over from existing credit cards. It is vital to ask the issuer if there are any hidden fees. If you have multiple credit cards, pay the minimum balances on these cards monthly. If you consolidate the outstanding credit cards onto the new credit card this creates an interest-free period in some cases of up to 24 months. Once completed, pay off the highest interest rate debt first. Just remember, you’re not alone, and you don’t need to suffer in silence. With some useful debt and cash flow strategies, you can enjoy what life has to offer.

TURN YOUR ASSETS INTO CASH! Don’t be strapped for cash over the festive season.

GET IT I DATING

How to start dating again after a long time If you’ve been putting off finding the love of your life, allow 2019 to be your year — learn how with Get it’s Love Expert Linda from Ideal Introductions

o anyone who has been emotionally scarred by a traumatic life-event such as divorce, death, abuse, or a bad breakup, the thought of jumping back into the dating pool is scary. Often, a long break from love follows these events because God forbid you end up having to go through a rough patch all over again, right? For some, they would rather not go down that road again, especially if they can protect themselves from any form of heartache or if they wish to preserve the memory of a loved one. Also, singledom can become a comfortable respite from all the chaos as your life is your own and you get to do whatever you like, whenever you wish. It’s an easy state to stay in. Having said that though, it’s also important to remember that by doing so you’re denying yourself a crucial part of what makes us human — a sense of connection and the ability to love and be loved in return. The truth is, you deserve to feel love, especially after such a monumental event. And you shouldn’t let unpleasant ordeals hinder the possibility of long-lasting friendship, rapport, support, reciprocated love, and/or intimacy, particularly after you have had time to heal.Take

comfort in the fact that you are much stronger this time around and these experiences — good or bad — can be used as life lessons to help guide you along the path to a relationship you deserve. Have you found yourself wondering what it would be like to be in a relationship again? Take that as an indication and baby step towards being open to the thought of dating again. Now, we’re not asking you to jump straight into the dating pool. It really should be a slow and steady process. Listen to your gut because in order to proceed, you need to be truly comfortable in your own skin and ready to take the plunge. So, how do you get back out there after a long time on your own? It may sound cliché, but I know of so many people who have said that they found their other halves when they least expected it. When they were at their happiest, in their element, and not even looking to get attached. Whatever you had to go through, allow yourself time to mourn and to recover emotionally before moving forward. That way, you can focus on new possibilities. There really isn’t a fixed timeline as it varies from person to person. So, take your time to learn to love yourself again — to be

happy being on your own. Find a new creative passion, spend quality time with your family, or take care of your health by getting active at the gym. It’s only when you are content that you can truly let anyone else in. Next, it helps to study your past. As painful as it is to think about the days of yore, it’ll help you grow and find the lessons you can take away from those experiences. You’ll be better able to decide on the changes you need to make, your likes and dislikes, the behaviours you will no longer accept from a partner, what you want out of a relationship, and more. This exercise will make you more mindful and will help you to “look before you leap”. Finally, as paradoxical to the above as this sounds, it’s important to keep an open-mind and try not to limit yourself to opportunities that come your way. Be willing to try new things you generally wouldn’t have tried in the past and be open to meeting different people as well. When you open yourself to new experiences, you will notice that doors will start to open. It really is a fine balance, but when you’re ready to move forward you’ll know for sure.

GET IT I HEALTH

Health scare for our Mayor Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate is known for his friendly smile, witty banter and inspiring words, however, he learned last year that cancer doesn’t discriminate ancer stops at nothing. And Mayors aren’t immune to the deadly disease. Mayor Tom Tate has recently fought a very personal battle, bowel cancer. The Mayor had no symptoms, he lived a healthy life like most Gold Coasters and enjoyed fitness at the gym and ate reasonably well. If it wasn’t for the Mayoress Ruth Tate’s health scare in Singapore on June 26, 2017 he may not have discovered the cancer so soon. “It later led me to have a full medical check-up. That was what picked up the growth in my bowel,” says the Mayor. Once he got the news no one wants to hear, his thoughts and fears were immediately surrounding his family. “It was my thoughts for my family, rather than my personal situation, that frightened me the most,” he says. “I simply did not want to have them again experience the raw emotions we all did, when Ruth almost passed away in 2017. Knowing that Ruth had survived severe cardiac arrest, and was now on the recovery, made it even more important that I did everything possible to beat my illness.” And that he did. While post-surgery there

It was my thoughts for my family, rather than my personal situation, that frightened me the most

were complications, the Mayor’s faith saw him through any obstacles. “We had complications post-surgery and I had to be placed in ICU. They then undertook emergency surgery as there was significant internal bleeding. That was a frightening time, no doubt,” he says. “I put my faith in My Lord and left it in His hands. That’s when I felt calm, not because I was guaranteed a cure but because, whatever was to happen was His will.” The Mayor’s ordeal is now over, however, he has learnt a lot from the experience and will take those lessons with him as he moves forward.

“I feel great, but I will never again take my health for granted,” he says. “I am having regular check-ups, eating a lot better, training four days a week at the gym and trying to be more conscious of what goes into my body.” Mayor Tom Tate hopes his experience will help others place their health at the forefront of their minds and prioritise active, healthy living. “Don’t take your health for granted. If you think you are doing it for yourself, think more broadly ... and do it for your family. Get regular heath check-ups and live a physically active life.”

19 for your 2019

pieces of health advice

1

Take a mental health day when you’re feeling snappy, mentally exhausted, unable to concentrate or depressed by your office routine.

5 Don’t go gluten-free unless you are medically diagnosed as having celiac disease or have gluten intolerance.

9 Find a fun way to keep fit. Stop hating exercise and find some form of it you like.

13 Be kind to yourself. You’re human and you don’t have to get everything right all the time.

Dump the detox. Yes, a few days of juicing will result in shedding a kilo or two, but it’s usually just water weight.

Learn to love the C word (Vitamin C that is)! This vitamin increases the absorption of iron.

Give fad diets the finger. They’re unrealistic. Instead, change your lifestyle for real results.

8 Don't adopt an all or nothing approach. You can have your salad, and a cookie if you wish.

11

10 Water and wine go hand in hand. Drink water between alcoholic beverages or at least before you go to sleep.

Go to work, don’t be your work. Make sure you have some time for yourself.

12 Give yourself little rewards when you make good health decisions.

15

14 Eat healthy foods you actually like. Forcing yourself to eat foods you hate is so 2018.

Life is too short to hate people or hold grudges. Let it go.

4

Push past the crap feeling when you start a new fitness routine. It gets better (trust us).

2

Do less rather than more.

Smart — not stupid — ideas to implement for your best year ever

Stretch daily to avoid feelings of tightness, soreness and grouchiness.

16 Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes a day. Take a break from the external and internal noise.

19

18 Find pleasure in making others happy, in turn, you’ll feel good too.

38

Don’t take yourself too seriously, no one else does.

KICK SO M E G OA L S T H I S Y E A R!

s we approach the New Year, we often find ourselves taking stock of the year that we are leaving behind. How did we do? Did we achieve everything we set out to or did we start well and finish badly? However your year turned out, give yourself a pat on the back — you made it! Now it’s time once again to face a new year full of fresh hope and promise. If, like many of us, you are time-poor and overstretched, some careful planning can take the stress away and give you back a sense of control. “Chaos often is a result of a lack of confidence and clarity, so getting really clear on your goals is the first step to kicking chaos into touch,” says Genevieve Matthews, creator and founder of theartofextraordinary.com, an online community with resources for women in leadership. “The important thing is to make sure your goals are realistic and achievable because this will give you the confidence to set out to achieve them.” Here are Genevieve’s top tips to an organised and successful year ahead: 4 Brain Dump: Grab a pen and paper and write down everything you can think of that is causing you stress, grief, overwhelm and anxiety. List the things you didn’t do last year that you wanted to and all the things you need to do at work and at home. Write it down however it comes out — no need to make a neat list — just get it down on the paper. 4 Two-pronged attack: Focus on two things that you can do in one week. Choose those tasks that you view as achievable, important and that will take away some of your stress and help bring a sense of relief. December 2018

“The important thing is to make sure your goals are realistic and achievable because this will give you the confidence to setting out to achieve them." Grab a coloured felt tip marker and circle the two tasks. 4 Action plan: Once you have decided on the ‘what’, then it’s time to decide on the ‘how’. List down what you need to do to achieve your two goals. For example, you might decide you need to see more of your best friend. Easier said than done if you’re working late every night or have too many family commitments. So, book a date with your friend and make a commitment to stick to it, even if you have to finish work on time or organise a babysitter. Just do it. Do it once and you’re already on the pathway to carving out a new routine for the year ahead. 4 Reflect: After you have completed your chosen task, take a moment to reflect how you feel. Do you feel a sense of achievement? Do you feel happy in yourself that you have made a plan and stuck to it? Are you feeling more confident to take the same approach to your other goals? By reflecting on the positive emotions you 44

feel when you have achieved something you set your mind to, rather than focusing on the way you feel when you don’t complete tasks, you are already laying down new thought pathways, paving the way to setting up new ways of being that can help you achieve more success, more confidence and a greater sense of fulfilment than you had dreamed possible. 4 Cross it off: Tick or cross off your goal once you have achieved it. That way you can kick your goals once and for all! For more planning tips and tools, visit: pilotpen.com.au

Do remember that Saturn, the lesson bringer of the zodiac, is in your 8th house of change. This reminds you that the best strategy for inspiring and being inspired is to keep your feet on the ground.

CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20 New year, new you! The next few months see you in a bit of a transition of sorts. Creative opportunities are abundant as Jupiter transits your 10th house of career and receives great support from the Sun and Neptune. You are being called to focus on your career, how would like it to look in 2019? The planets are supportive in the manifestation of your hopes and dreams.

AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19

Time to make plans for a healthier start to 2019, dear Aquarius. Focus on pursuing things that benefit your health and wellbeing. Practice mindfulness, journaling and meditation during the coming months to gain peace and clarity.

PISCES February 19 – March 20

The forward movement of all the planets in the month of December signals action and good progress. The main areas of interest for Pisces are relationships, social life, career and changing your personal image. You will feel a surge of creativity and need for freedom. Don’t be surprised if you feel the pull to take a new direction in your career or relationship.

ARIES March 20 – April 19

It’s the end of a challenging year for you Aires, and time to welcome the New Year with some much-

needed tranquillity. December is a time to slow down and focus on what you need to bring into the New Year, both financially and emotionally. The main thing to remember is to not overdo anything, be consistent but slow paced.

TAURUS April 20 – May 21

Opportunities are a plenty for 2019. When most of us are focused on clocking off, you are buckling down to reach new heights in your career. 2019 see you achieve this and more with travel and new areas of study well and truly on the cards. Venus in your sign is indicating growth and prosperity for financial matters. Your health, vitality and relationships are also sitting pretty this month.

GEMINI May 21 – June 21

Hello Mercury Retrograde! Mercury is the ruler of your sun sign and its retrograde in the 7th house of relationships means that communication with your family members, work colleagues and significant others might be a little hairy this month. There is lots of conversation but not enough understanding, so try to see things from others’ point of view.

CANCER June 21 – July 22

Hang in there, Cancer! Work might be challenging this month but try not to take any extra time off before the holiday period as the hard work you put in this month will pay off next year. Your houses of romance and relationships are highlighted this month seeing a happy family life

and casting sunshine on your partnerships. It will be a Merry Christmas indeed.

LEO July 22 – August 23

New endeavours and self-development are themes for the next two months, Leo. The Sun, Mars, and Venus’ transit of your 5th house is likely to inspire your creative self. This is a fantastic time to follow new inspirations when they arise for you. Try to let go of any limiting beliefs that hold you back from expanding your mind and improving your life.

VIRGO August 23 - September 22

Time to channel some financial discipline Virgos because Jupiter is at the heart of your 2nd house of money and will be joined by the South Node on the 27th. This is highlighting your need to reassess and ensure you are building strong foundations for your future. You are surrounded by opportunities for abundance, however, you must follow up with action.

LIBRA September 22 – October 23

Libra, the next two months bring you plenty of opportunities for expanding your horizons in business and career. However, beware Mercury retrograde in your communication house, as this may see you feeling a little tongue tied or at least muddled in your thinking for a brief period. Its important to use tact and patience when talking with your loved ones this month.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22

Woah there Scorpio, the last month really shook things up for you in the areas of passion! Because of this you may be feeling a little scattered and disorientated coming into the holiday period. However, this month marks new growth with love and happiness for you. You must take leadership when dealing with your loved ones and try to take things lightly.

GET IT I LAST WORD

t began with something called a ‘happy planner’. The year, that is — I started off so well, planning ahead in my bright yellow hard-covered book that’s trimmed with gold and artistically decorated with beautiful landscape photography. All my goals, neatly listed, poised for success. Maybe you can relate? I spent time working through my planner’s activities which included noting intentions and rating my happiness in various areas of life with a view to take action on anything that felt lacking. On a glance back, I see I also filled in the ‘reverse bucket list’ pages, where instead of writing down all the things I wish to achieve, I listed those things I was already proud of accomplishing (a very nice activity, if you need a boost today). While I did initially make the most of my ‘happy planner’, it has actually been sitting on top of a pile of half-read books since May! The bright yellow HAPPY cover serves as a reminder each morning of the possibilities ahead. But in the evenings, it came to prompt panic over all I’d intended to do but not yet acted upon. According to the internet, this is now a thing – ‘FOMOMG’ (fear of missing out [on] my goals). What to do then, if we feel like we’re not where we intended to be now? That is, if we haven’t saved the money we wanted to, got the job, bought the house, discovered the romance, finished (or started) a project we’d hoped to have in hand.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and like we’re missing out, and some might agree it’s especially so at this time of year. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and like we’re missing out, and some might agree it’s especially so at this time of year. Keen to not fall victim to this so-called FOMOMG, I resolved to lessen the pressure I admitted placing on myself. I’ve been reading some of Sarah Knight’s work — she’s the author of the No F*cks Given guides and presenter of a TED talk on the ‘magic of not giving a f*ck’ that’s reached over four million people. Clearly, many are curious to know if it’s okay to shed our excess ‘stuff’, and Sarah’s now famous for spreading the word on how to let go of things you really don’t need to care about.

Happy

planning Sarah Blinco gets over her ‘FOMOMG’ (yep, it’s a thing)

Akin to decluttering your home, we’re encouraged to do the same with our minds. You can start this today by writing down a list of all the things that are taking up space in your head, then carefully consider which items you don’t need to care about. Really. For example, are you worrying that you’re not as caught up in your career as your friends are (well apparently, according to Instagram)? Let it go. It’s likely to work out the moment you begin to clean up your thoughts and focus on the things that truly matter. I’ve also been dipping into Amber Rae’s Choose Wonder over Worry (another one stashed in my bedside pile of books). She helpfully points out that it’s not the things we don’t care about that are hard to let go of, but it’s letting go of all those things we DO want to achieve, plan for or create, that is so hard. To choose ‘wonder over worry’, means doing just that — letting some of the stress and pressure go, and focussing on the thing that is the most important to you. Looking ahead, it’s time for me — and you, perhaps — to find joy in the moment. Make time for a festive break; consider the good in your world, and your achievements; play with your kids or pets; focus on ONE thing you’re looking forward to pursuing next year. Let go of the clutter and embrace with me the understanding that setting goals is one thing but realising those goals can change is the real key to happiness.
