Valentine’s Day
SARAH BLINCO
What is love? Definitely not the song by Haddaway, that’s for sure. Could it be the young couple I saw in the airport, snogging far too passionately for 7 in the morning!? Is it, perhaps, the elderly couple, hand in hand, strolling along the promenade outside the coffee shop where I ponder and write this piece? Maybe it’s the way the little two-yearold gazes at her mother at the table just over from me. Or the swell of happy emotions that well inside when my best friend sends me a random “thinking of you, hope you’re ok” text. As I’m sure you’ll appreciate, love, actually (yes, had to throw in a reference to my favourite film on the topic) is all of these things. In my case, I’m very lucky. Love is the enthusiastic ‘full bodied’ tailwag I receive from my cattle dog when I arrive home. Love is when I’m being unreasonable and grumpy but am met with a joke to make me laugh. It’s also when I pack an unnecessary amount of “items I need” yet can’t carry my bags up stairs in international train stations, however my luggage is hauled along by my lovely man without question or complaint.

On that note, love is also kindness shown towards yourself − being forgiving, confident; taking a chance on experiences and adventure. Without a little love for yourself, and discovering what you’re passionate about (whether it be blogging, art, travel, dogs, shoe collecting), it’s difficult to truly be able to love others, receive love and enjoy life to the degree possible. Whether you’re heading out for a romantic dinner, buying (or receiving) sparkly gifts, staying in with a bottle of bubbles and a film (I’d suggest something starring Hugh Grant), or sorting your beloved collection of ... whatever, remember to enjoy Valentine’s Day. Look upon the date as an opportunity to ponder your affairs of the heart − what you have, what you want, dream about what you could be looking forward to, and celebrate all you’ve got to be grateful for.

SASSY Stonemen are currently the only underwear label in the world that digitally print 360 degree images on their undergarments. All of the unique prints are inspired by natural landscapes, with images offering a sense of freedom with a retro twist.
When did Stonemen launch and who is behind the label? Stonemen was launched in Australia in 2007 by Marc Debnam. Later joined by Robbie Malan and Johnnie Cass who now head the international offices. What is Stonemen? You know those perfect little moments? Hand in hand with your babe, sun on your back and nowhere to go except wherever the mood takes you? Well that feeling comes sewn into every pair of Stonemen underwear we make. A lot of love goes into them, even before you’ve put them on. Stonemen is the brainchild of a couple of laid-back Aussies on a mission to change the underwear world with their fashion forward brand of luxury cotton smalls. Boy/girl, girl/girl, boy/boy, it doesn’t matter who you are or who you do, we’re here to help you do it in style, because everyone could use a little more dressing up to get down.
Iconic, Young Republic and Hard to Find. We are in a select few small boutique stores in Sydney, Hobart and Perth.
How was the concept of Stonemen underwear born? It started as a hobby for Marc Debnam who was working as a Fashion Photographer at the time. There were plenty of brands doing imagery on underwear, hot dogs, robots etcetera, but no one creating beautiful underwear with great images. So he set out to create something a bit different, but also technically very hard to make due to the registration of the image as it moves through the panels. “It’s been a long road of trial and error and the cost of a 1-bedder in Bondi, but we now have an incredibly beautiful, comfortable pair of
undies” he says. The women’s came shortly after and has also been a great success. Your designs are done in-house, but you also run competitions for the public to submit their designs. Is supporting local talent something that was important to the brand? This will be one of our main focuses moving forward. The idea is to create a community and platform for photographers, illustrators, designers and typographers to have fun with a panoramic format and to gain exposure globally through the brand. What’s in store for 2013? Mainly expanding the range of men’s and women’s underwear and stream-lining the buyer experience with online and retail. And a few other little concepts we are working on but still to early to tell.
Where can Stonemen be purchased? We mainly sell online through our online store stonemen.com and also through The

LOCAL PROFILE with Sarah Blinco
Marissa Burgess boasts a truly spectacular 20-year career across Europe and Asia - most notably in the city of love, Paris - as a showgirl and stage producer. She now calls the Gold Coast home, and chats to Sarah Blinco about her international life in the spotlight How long have you been back on the Gold Coast for following living and working in Europe? I arrived here in 2003 but have been coming and going ever since, between Europe and/or Asia for work. This time I’ve decided to make a concerted effort to stay in Australia, and I still travel all over Aussie for work. How are you finding settling in? I have been a little restless. In 2003 when I starred in a Jupiters show, I was amazed to find audiences here were so reserved about our scanty costumes, when I found them quite modest compared to Paris! I went back to Europe and Asia because audiences there are more aware about my industry and understand the class and elegance in which we portray ourselves. They appreciate and admire what we do as they do any specialty act. Now I’m finding people here are more ready to embrace my world (that of the Showgirl) than ever before. There’s a movement towards Burlesque and ladies want to find their ‘inner Goddess’ and look for inspiration. Victoria’s Secret shows are basically copies of the great Parisian shows and pop stars like Kylie Minogue, Pink, Beyonce all have turned their styling towards our world as well. Designers like Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier were frequent viewers to our shows. Now I’m able to present my amazing dancers in the way I want to, in true showgirl style, without hearing any slurs. Plus television has brought it home to the masses just how hard we work and the skill it takes to land a job in Paris. How did you come to work in Europe in the first place? My ballet background was what set me off on the right foot. At dance school the small girls became ballerinas, the tall girls (me) became showgirls and went to Paris. That’s just the way it was, and still is. I was brought up knowing about the lavish shows in Europe and Vegas, it was an ambition of mine since I was 11. I wanted to be where the costumes and culture were the most beautiful though, and that was Paris. What were the initial types of challenges you discovered when you moved abroad? Every step was hard at first. Whether it was finding my way around a big, dirty, dangerous city, or just working with people from so many cultures. But those first lessons were the challenges that gave me the skills to persevere with my career. The dancing stuff came easily! The shows were the part I felt at home and solid with.We had no internet or translating machines, we had a pocket dictionary and a map. I look back now and see how all that difficulty has made me an adaptable, tolerant, strong person. February 2013
DANCING
Queen 12
The hardest times were getting through injury. In Paris it seems that to succumb to injury means you should be further tormented with endless paper work, no money, impossibleto-find or reach doctors, and zero elevators! I mentor young professional dancers and urge them to take the hard path as harsh as it can be, because it gives you inner strength, and a sense of achievement. Tell us a little about your 20-year career in Paris? I went into Paris at 17-years-of-age. I was fortunate enough to work with the greatest performers the world has ever seen in my realm; witness the tail-end of a by-gone era. Becoming a good showgirl only comes in time. Indeed it’s the older ladies (30-36) who are truly fabulous to behold. I also modelled a fair bit and worked movie sets, and did everything I could to open my horizons. I have an insatiable curiosity and I was always happy to help out for costume work, or production and finally I guess it all seeped into me, so now as a producer, I am aware of how everyone works around me and respect their need to spread their wings too. Any favourite stand-out moments or experiences? I am most proud of being the longest serving lead dancer of the Moulin Rouge. At the time it was hard, but now I have and will always have that title. It wasn’t a moment, it was a lifetime, a lifestyle and my achievement. I’m very proud of my dancers and producing my own material to my vision too, and am always blown away by the talent, beauty and dedication of these young women. I was most inspired by the art work of Renee Gruau as a young girl; when I met the old man, I told him he had inspired me, he in turn said, “au contraire mademoiselle t’is you that inspire me!”This was a landmark for me. I have met many stars but above all having Cate Blanchett share my dressing room and research a role upon watching my backstage work was a highlight. She was gracious and humble yet shone like the star she is. And when I was a young girl, I had a great day shooting Vogue
with Naomi Campbell and photographed by legend Herb Ritts. There were a lot of fun times. What is it that you find most addictive about working on the stage? There is nothing that can compare to strutting your stuff in full make-up, with a handcrafted, French made $20,000 costume in front of 60 incredible performers, in a legendary showroom to a thousand people, twice a night. I once modelled at the Eiffel Tower to an estimated crowd of 100,000. I think the rush of large audiences is fun, but equally great when a small but enthusiastic audience lets you know they’re having a terrific time. I have always been addicted to extravagant beautiful costumes and fashion. Jewels and feathers are all I need. Unfortunately they require buckets of money to achieve. You’ve lead a truly amazing life − do you think you’ll continue to work between continents? I will always be linked to Europe, everything there comes so naturally to me. Australia for me is like a foreign country at times. I can’t get over all the fixation on sport. In Europe sport is treated with the same importance as everything else: arts, culture, education, recreation and so on. It’s more balanced. I don’t close the doors anywhere, but I would like to stay home and explore what Australia has to offer for the unforeseen future.
What advice do you have for entertainers with a dream to work abroad? Don’t get stuck online skyping home all the time, go out and mix in with the locals. Find out what more there is to offer outside of your immediate work environment. How are you looking forward to leaving your mark on our own local entertainment landscape now you’re home? I would dearly like that our industry is understood here, and for that it needs to be seen in its best possible context. That is, in a lavishly decorated showroom with no expenses spared with an elegant audience eager to marvel at the beauty of a true diva. Only then can we be ourselves. What’s on the agenda for the year ahead? More of the same, myself and my ladies taking to the stage to bedazzle people with a wonderful quality of extravagance. A quintessentially Australian notion which I find odd is that the drag queens have high-jacked ultimate in Green ng ng my world, andThe I’d The like it ultimate back! Although I doRoofi love in Green Roofi the world of drag queens because they honour and emulate us; in Paris I even had a small following. But there is a crowd that still hankers for the lavish performances and it would be nice to get the chance to see it here in their own country without having to travel abroad for it. COVER FEATURE with J’aimee Brooker
s s e c c u of s
Passionate about penning your very own novel? J’aimee Brooker investigates evolving trends in publishing, the big business of e-books and self-publishing ... and how your dreams of being a successful author may be accessible after all
espite bleak global economic conditions, it’s interesting to note that the 50 largest global book publishers achieved approximately $68 billion dollars in sales in 2011. With this knowledge, it quickly becomes clear why, in the past twelve months particularly, the publishing industry has undergone some monumental and game-changing shifts. With the book business now considered hot property, both traditional and digital publishers are scrambling for their share of the money pot. Though, it is perhaps the most unlikely of players in this new marketplace who are giving traditional publishers the biggest run for their money. That’s right, independent, self-published, authors are here and they are making a massive impact on what we’re reading. Independent publishing by definition is not a new concept. In fact, many of literature’s greatest writers were self-published – Mark Twain, Beatrix Potter, T.S. Elliot, and Virginia Woolf for example. Writers and authors have been penning influential literature for centuries, much of which will never see the light of day due largely to the exorbitant costs associated with traditional self-publishing. However, with the emergence of new technologies, most notably eReaders, the capability to self-publish has become more accessible than ever before. This accessibility also translates for consumers; e-Retailers offer convenient roundthe-clock access to their stores, security (in regard to providing clean downloads and safe payment options), and competitive pricing. On the surface, these positives would seem a win-win situation for publishers, authors, and readers alike. However it’s not all roses. Increasingly, industry purists and traditionallypublished authors are far from impressed with the influx, quality, and success that the accessibility to digital publishing offers. Recent criticism from 32-time bestselling author Sue Grafton was scathing,“Self-publishing is a short cut and I don’t believe in short cuts when it comes to the arts. I compare self-publishing to February 2013
a student managing to conquer Five Easy Pieces on the piano and then wondering if s/he’s ready to be booked into Carnegie Hall”. Whilst highly dismissive of the merits of self-publishing, Grafton’s comment begs the question—is the method of delivery more important to the reader than the delivery of the topic? More importantly, should the merit of self-published authors be quite so generalised? Author Sylvia Day achieved notable success when her self-published novel Bared To You, released in April 2012, quickly climbed the charts and established a dedicated readership.
7-figure print-only deal with publisher Harlequin MIRA which will see Andre embark on major global back-to-back releases of her existing novels throughout 2013 and 2014. While there are plenty of arguments for and against self-publishing, perhaps the most accurate indicator is that of consumer interest and support. In August 2012, Barnes and Noble’s Retail CEO Mitchell Klipper reported that E.L James’ 50 Shades of Grey had “the biggest impact on numbers” inadvertently indicating that James’ (initially self-published fan-fiction) novel had significantly helped reduce Barnes &
Though, it is perhaps the most unlikely of players in this new marketplace who are giving traditional publishers the biggest run for their money. This early success subsequently led to major publishing house Penguin acquiring the novel a mere one month after release. Importantly, this proves several points: firstly, the quality of selfpublished authors can indeed be on par with industry standards and secondly, and perhaps most importantly, traditional publishers are paying attention to self-published authors and their readers. Also garnering strong and sustained success is New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Bella Andre. Having sold more than 1.5 million books and with a portfolio encompassing 16 self-published ebooks, Andre proves there is industry and consumer merit to be achieved as an independent author. Interestingly again, Andre’s self-publishing success has been the catalyst for interest from major traditional publishers. Tellingly, Andre has recently signed a groundbreaking 18
Noble’s losses. It is important to note too, that reader satisfaction with self-published authors such as Day, Andre, and James is also breathing life into the domain of traditionally published authors, as is the case with Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty erotica series.Whilst you’d be forgiven for having repressed the decades-old series, the consumergenerated interest in erotica stemming from James’ novel was the key motivator for Penguin Books to re-release Rice’s series. The decision paid dividends, with Rice’s series becoming a New York Times bestseller for the first time. With readers voting with their downloads, it would seem that self-publishing is certainly a viable and consumer-accepted method for delivering your product to the marketplace. Australian author, Ainslie Paton has long championed the method of self-publishing yet is also realistic about the challenges self-publishing entails. Citing discoverability as the single most challenging aspect,
7 self-publishing success strategies 1 Make friends with Social Media you will need to ‘PR yourself’ as a self-published author. 2 Research the best sites and methods appropriate for your style of fiction / non-fiction. Understand distribution and printing options! Chance favours the prepared mind. 3 What are your competitors doing? Know your individual points of difference and play to your strengths. 4 Ensure you draft a personal budget for the project that accounts for expenses such as publicity, advertising, distribution, printing, website domain, business cards and so on. 5 Network - in person (industry, business and media events) and online, utilising sites like LinkedIn in particular. ‘Contacts’ are key in spreading the word on your new published work. 6 Engage the services of a professional copy editor / journalist / writer to sub-edit or proof-read your work. Perfection is a necessity.
Paton certainly has a point. With millions of books (and growing by the day) flooding the marketplace, authors choosing to plot a course on the self-published route must consider a plethora of factors. Speaking on the importance of discoverability, Paton notes,“If you are an indie writer and you have not already built a tribe of followers it is very difficult to see sales of your book happen, even if it is a truly breakthrough or remarkable story”. Self-publishing offers an incomparable level of creative control to that of traditional publishing, however, this control significantly increases the workload. Paton notes that further to writing your novel, tasks such as, “editing, content, blurb, cover (art and design), pricing, and monitoring your sales” need to be addressed either by yourself or outsourced help. Additionally, you must be prepared and appropriately competent in marketing, advertising, and promoting your product across several, ever-changing mediums encompassing traditional and new media. Despite the workload associated with self-publishing seeming arduous and
insurmountable, Paton remains optimistic, “Once upon a time you’d write your dream story and put it in a drawer somewhere for lack of opportunity to publish it. Now (with accessibility to digital self-publishing) you can take control and bring it to market yourself”. The financial benefits also resound; selfpublished authors listing their product with Amazon are privy to a royalties rate of 70 per cent compared with 15-20 per cent of royalties offered by traditional publishing houses. Furthermore, if the success of Day, Andre, and James is anything to go by, a well executed selfpublishing venture can lead to unprecedented opportunities with traditional publishers. Paton too has experienced this exposure with her previously self-published contemporary romance title Grease Monkey Jive recently being acquired by Escape Publishing. Publishing is a monumental industry showcasing a diversity as compelling as the genres and products within it. The complexity of publishing in and of itself therefore embodies the strengths and weaknesses of both traditional and independent publishing and 19

results in a positive outcome for the reader— more content, diverse and often niche topic areas, and increased accessibility to reading material. Regardless of what genre you’re most inclined to read, as publishing expands and refines itself, the winners in this ever-changing industry will be the readers. You can find Ainslie Paton at ainsliepaton.com.au. Having worked in many facets of the publishing industry, including publishing and editing a regional lifestyle magazine and working as marketing manager of an international publishing house, Gold Coaster, J’aimee Brooker, has (finally) embarked on her goal to self-publish a series of novels, education guides, and budgeting books. Her first series, 20under20, can be found online at 20under20.com.au. February 2013

AHEADof the rest rank Sinatra once said“Cock your hat, angles are attitude.” It may be more than 50 years since the Rat Pack made their mark on the world but their classic sense of style is still emulated by many today, particularly with the classic fedora. One of Queensland’s leading hat retailers Andrew Lygo says hats of all shapes, styles and sizes are making a big comeback with young and old alike. ‘Historically hats were worn to cover unkempt or unstyled hair, but today more people are donning them either to make a fashion statement or to simply to cover up in harsh environments,” says Mr Lygo. Hats by the Hundred has been an iconic hat store on the Gold Coast for more than 30 years and recently relocated to The Brickworks in Southport. “We wanted a convenient location as we have such an extensive range of hats and hat
accessories ranging in price from $17 to $400,” explains Mr Lygo, who jokes his business should be called Hats by the 1000s, since it stocks more than 1400 different styles. Hats by the Hundred has hats for children and adults with popular made toorder Australian brands such as Akubra, Barmah and Helen Kaminski as well as Gold Coastmade Jacaru hats. Mr Lygo said cowboy hats were among some of his best-selling hats this summer with widebrimmed authentic panama hats made in South America also a popular choice among local men and women. “We’ve had plenty of mums of school-aged children
buying panamas and wearing them not only at the beach, but also on the school run and out shopping,” he said. With almost 70% of reflective light transmitted from snow and water, Mr Lygo says brands such as Tilley Hats has a large range of adventure and outdoor amphibious hats popular among local surfers and fisherman. For those with a penchant for rockstar style, US-made Brixton mens’ hats offer a blend of contemporary and classic styles favoured by celebrities such as Joel Madden and Guy Sebastion. In addition to the extensive hat range, Hats by the 100 stocks hats jacks, leather conditioners, hat stands, domes and presentation stands. HEALTHY + HAPPY this Valentines Symon Peters from Kudos Health Club explains why it’s important to have fun and be socially interactive with your fitness endeavours
What better gift to give yourself or a loved one this Valentine’s than that of a healthier lifestyle? Valentine’s is the perfect time to look and feel your very best − time to start a new plan, reignite energy and to lose that extra kilo or two. There are many and varied programmes that provide the platforms, but it’s still about hard work and maintaining motivation,. Why is this then, and how do you keep motivated and focussed on goals? Our general psychology is such that we know what is probably good (or not good) for our wellbeing, but we often don’t take time to prioritise things that seem difficult. We lead busy lives and consequently we sometimes forget to focus on our own health. VALENTINESPECIAL with Tiffany Breed
new ways to find
Tiffany Breed investigates contemporary online options capturing the hearts of people looking to pair up all around Queensland. Love on the move Plenty of Fish (or POF) is the hottest dating APP (and website) for busy people on the run. After creating a profile with your ‘likes’ and ‘dislikes’, you can choose to search for people in your area, with similar interests or you can let POF do the work for you and calculate ‘your matches’. There is a lot to love about this dating APP, with easy-to-use features, no uncomfortable ‘send a kiss’ or ‘wink’ buttons and it is completely free. With over 40,000 new signups per day and 45 million members, there is sure to be somebody on POF for you! Passionate affair you say? The website synonymous with cheating, lies and scandal, Ashley Madison originated in Canada and hit Aussie shores with a vengeance. Before you judge and blame men, or ‘the man’ who started it all, Noel Biderman, consider the fact that after launching in Australia the site has grown to over 500,000 members in which 40 per cent are female. Shocked? Most are reportedly on-the-go businesswomen and mothers seeking excitement in their lives.Ashley Madison promises hush-hush affairs but secrets don’t come cheap with the basic package of 100 credits costing $49. For the love of God You heard me right, there is also a place for people who spend Sunday at church. If you are still a little bit skeptical about online dating and are a Christian who wants to meet someone who also shares your values, then perhaps Christians
Online could be the site for you. Being crowned the largest singles Christians dating website and growing to 10,000 members since starting in 2001, Christians Online will help all you devoted individuals on your search for a match (which let’s face it, is hard to find on the Gold Coast). Forget one-night stands and secrets, Christians Online is a proud “catalyst for love” and a place where many successful marriages started. How to marry a millionaire? Like your mother always said (or was secretly hoping), bag yourself a millionaire and you’re set for life. There is one rule though, beautiful people (or maybe a millionaire in your own right), need only join. Seeking Millionaire is a dating site dedicated to just that, the dating between the wealthy and the attractive. You don’t need to be a millionaire to join. It’s free for women but considering the main qualities that daters look for on the site are wealth and beauty, you may have difficulty finding those who are not shallow snobs.Who am I to judge though? If you’re keen for financial freedom and have been called gorgeous or pretty at least once in your life, you may have found your crowd. Sweethearts for the social networker How many hours do you spend each day on Facebook? One? Maybe more? If you are one who chose the latter, you might be interested in Zoosk. A Facebook APP, Zoosk allows you to flick through suitable profiles to find someone you fancy. Established in 2007, Zoosk is one of 35
the most recent ways to find love online. The best part is that you don’t have to be a Facebooker to be on Zoosk. Daters can also join via the Zoosk website,a mobile APP or even via a downloadable desktop program. My only peeve about Zoosk is that in comparison to other websites and APPs, it was the worst at choosing somebody suitable. Over 50 and Fabulous! Feeling as if all the dating sites are targeting people 40 and under? Have no fear! Matchmaking website, 50 And is an Australian-only website, which makes it easier to find someone in your area. Not only is it specifically for over 50s, but it’s targeted exclusively towards Australians, so no irrelevant ads (actually no ads at all, at this point in time) or testimonials from overseas. If you’re perhaps just looking for a friend, 50 And is great for that too, and actually it recommends you make friends first. It is very user-friendly and prides itself on being safe. Quickie for the tech addict If you were one of a million people waiting desperately to get your hands on the new iPad or spend hours playing with silly, highly addictive APPs on your iPhone and are looking for love (or a hot date), then we might just have the APP for you. Exclusive to iPad, iPod or iPhone users, Australia SpeedDate is your onestop shop for quick five-minute speed dating on your phone. Apart from being completely free (yes, all of the features including the matchmaker) it’s an Australian site and is also available online and on Android. February 2013
TRAVEL
The adventure of a
lifetime
Sheree Everitt explains how it will change your life for the better, forever. aking a motorhome tag-along tour wasn’t something I had ever considered, until I discovered Harvey World Travel’s 28-day option through Alaska and Canada. I was a little daunted by the prospect of driving on the ‘wrong side’ of the road, and travelling with kids. However, the booking process here in Australia was a breeze, and the opportunity seemed too good to pass up. Following the hassle-free collection of our luxurious motorhome in Anchorage, admittedly I was a little nervous for the first few kilometres. Soon enough however, I developed the confidence of a seasoned American ‘motorhomer’! One great thing about Alaska is that motorhomes are catered for like nowhere else in the world. For example, Walmart (which is everywhere) has plenty of parking space and room to pull in to stock up or grab a snack. Our first stop was Talkeenta in the Denali National Park where we hit the air with K2 Aviation to tackle the ominous Mt McKinley, North America’s tallest mountain. Just for good measure, we landed on the Pika Glacier at 4000 feet above sea level! It is very surreal at the top - no sound, no birds, nothing; just the odd, distant cracking and thawing of ice. We took a day tour into Denali National Park to see the sled dogs, how they work and live - what an amazing experience. Here you can pat the huskies, and there are some you can practically

lay down next to. Later in the trip in Dawson City we visited a local First Nation gentlemen, Tommy, who takes care of the town’s dog team and during winter he ferries people up and down the frozen river from their homes to work and school, just like a taxi service. Life here is totally removed from what we know. Just as we can not fathom life in minus 70, they couldn’t stop asking about how on earth people survive in 45 degrees in the Australian Outback. We were constantly in awe of the Alaskan lifestyle. It’s not uncommon for winter temperatures to reach minus 60! Some towns, such as the village of Denali, see the evacuation of the entire population for nine months of the year because to survive the winter is simply impossible. During winter, it’s essential to take Vitamin D supplements because some areas can go for seven months without sunlight; whereas in summer, ‘daytime’ can last for 23 hours! Each day of the tour is planned. Average driving time per day is four hours, and all RV parks are pre-booked. You may choose to enjoy the security of travelling with the group, or take as much independent time as desired. Everyone has walkie talkies to keep in touch, and the evening camp fire chats with fellow travellers over a glass of local ale are the best!

The group we shared our adventure with was first-class - a mix of corporate high flyers, entrepreneurs, farmers, nurses and all-round hard workers from different walks of life. Our trip covered an area from Anchorage up to Denali National Park, back to Fairbanks, down to Dawson City, across in the Yukon to Whitehorse then to the world famous Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise, concluding in Seattle (USA). Highlights were plentiful, and not a day went by without an exciting encounter or adrenalin running on high. Of course, you do have to be careful driving - bears are everywhere, as are moose, deer, caribou and bison. There are many roadside stops that offer respite though, as well as opportunities for great photos of the local wildlife and unsurpassable North American scenery. We travelled in August (end of summer, coming into autumn) - a highly recommended period, as the colours of the landscape are spectacular. If you love to travel and are keen to try something new, this motorhome tour of Alaska and Canada is simply amazing; enjoyable for all ages. You will make life-long friends, and create memories that will stick with you for all your years. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Niseko Japan:
l a t i p a C Powder Victoria Cuda travels to Japan to test the theory that this cool country offers some of the very best snow fun around... urfing in Queensland one day, skiing in the ‘land of the rising sun’ the next. Japan boasts over 500 ski fields, and the best thing is that they are really accessible to Aussies! I recently visited Niseko on a group trip with friends, ranging in ages 21 to 31. This picturesque destination is located in Hokkaido, Japan’s northern most island. The resort is a two and a half hour coach ride from Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport (further details online at niseko.ne.jp/en/). Niseko maintains a reputation for offering amazing powder snow (the key reason for our visit), but this is no surprise considering the resort receives the world’s second highest snowfall. Our group of seven rented a house for our short stay. This accommodation had actually been recommended to us, but there are plenty of options to suit most budgets if you Google ‘accommodation Niseko’. We were truly spoilt, as we woke up most mornings either to find beautiful large snowflakes falling, or on the clear days, a spectacular view of Mt Yotei (often nicknamed ‘mini Fuji’). Most holiday-makers head to Niseko for the awesome skiing and boarding. The resort is about five times the size of the ski fields in Australia and the runs just seem to go forever! Niseko is broken into four distinct areas. Annupuri has both gentle groomed slopes for beginners as well as great powder bowls for experienced back-country skiers and boarders, Niseko Village provides long runs which end at the entrance to the Hilton Hotel, Grand Hirafu is the biggest area and provides a bit of everything and Hanazono February 2013

which has a terrain park area as well as some really nice ungroomed areas. The lifts are all interconnected and we purchased one ticket that allowed us to move seamlessly between each of the areas. We were able to ski and board from 8.30am to 9pm, and the only limiting factor was exhaustion. During our stay we decided to have a day off from skiing and boarding to go snow shoeing. We walked through paddocks filled with untouched snow and slid down cliffs covered with soft power into frozen riverbeds. The area was pristine and it felt like we were discovering something refreshingly new. We also discovered plenty of après-ski activities. There were a large number of restaurants providing a range of food choices including traditional Japanese, international and western cuisine. The bars are very different − most are really small and often hidden in interesting locations. One of my favourites was the Fridge Door Bar. Apart from the attraction of its quirky door, it sold great hot alcoholic beverages. Staying in a house in Japan provided some unexpected, however, interesting experiences. One of the first things you have to learn is that in Japan they are serious about recycling. We had to sort our rubbish, ‘gumi’ into 12 different bins. We were given a book the size of a small dictionary explaining what went where. Grocery shopping is also
a new experience. There are a number of unusual items on the shelves! Fresh food is generally self-explanatory, however, the varying types of meats can be confusing (is it beef or something else?). Packaged foods without pictures are the biggest gamble, and consequently we made a few accidental purchases. However, it is often those little things that make you laugh on a holiday. If you are looking for a ski escape which guarantees plenty of snow, provides ‘something for everyone’ (both off and on the ski fields), and offers a few colourful twists, you most definitely need to visit Japan during the winter. We had a great time! Getting there: We flew Jetstar from Cairns to Tokyo and then Jetstar Japan from Tokyo to Sapporo. Our group then caught the Hokkaido Resort Liner bus between Sapporo and Niseko, 2300 yen each way.

LOCAL DINING with Missy Robinson
IN TO THE t was a beautiful summer’s night as we headed to the Blue Lantern Mediterranean Bistro & Bar in Southport. Nestled amongst a mix of eclectic dining venues, the restaurant forms part of the H20 commercial space located opposite the Broadwater Parklands. The dimly lit interior featuring the venue’s namesake, a large blue lantern hanging in the centre of the restaurant, sets the mood for diners; complemented further by easylistening lounge music playing through the sound system. With an authentic Mediterranean menu catering for breakfast from $7.50, lunch from $10.50 and dinner from $16.50, Blue Lantern offers an extremely cost effective yet quality dining option for all. Starting with a good size serving of homemade fresh bread and dips, choosing our mains from the menu was a difficult task. The food was absolutely delicious: a Turkish inspired dish – shaved roast lamb on couscous w / garlic and mint yoghurt dressing. Fresh, light and well balanced, total taste-bud heaven! Owned and operated by siblings Andrew and Emily, I was lucky enough to have Andrew (owner/Head Chef ) whip up a tasty specialty dish (which looked so amazing, the guests dining behind me ordered the same thing!); Inspired with southern France infusions, this special vegetarian risotto was so filling and scrumptious I was unable to finish the whole dish – that never happens! Needless to say, we were incredibly satisfied with the meal. That said, there’s always room for a sweet treat. We were advised by our fabulous waiter that Blue Lantern offers a new dessert every day, so following a share plate of mango mousse and coconut to freshen the palate, our dining experience was at last complete. Blue Lantern is the newest hot-spot to

SOUTHPORT HAS A NEW DINING
“Hot Spot”
Yuzu Lounge There’s nothing nicer than traditional Japanese cuisine, and so we think it’s totally ‘sugoi’ (cool) that we’ve discovered Yuzu Lounge, under the H20 Broadwater building. Yuzu, named after an exotic Japanese citrus fruit, is a casual and relaxed dining space, with a menu offering delicious Izakaya style (small dishes) platters as well as bento and (kushiage) skewers - perfect for indulging on your own or for sharing as a group. For those not acquainted with the delight that is ‘bento’, it is a single takeaway packed meal, common in the everyday Japanese lifestyle. Bento usually consists of rice, fish/meat and vegetables in a box-shaped container - fast-food that’s yummy and healthy, now conveniently available from Yuzu. Want to indulge a little further in Japanese culture? Yuzu offers casual sushi-roll making classes for individuals and groups. Additionally, you can organise hot finger food platters (and potentially delivery too) for small functions and meetings at local primary and high schools and businesses. Catering to large group bookings, Yuzu operates on an egalitarian first-come, first-serve basis. Yuzu is fully licensed and also offers BYO wine options. If you drop by on Friday and Saturday you can enjoy Yuzu’s special Izakaya (Japanese pub) and Tapas (JAPAS) menus, but take a look at the website for full opening hours and cuisine options. yuzulounge.com.au

February 2013
LAST WORD with Sarah Blinco
It’s one of the blockbusters of the summer, addressing the most profiled military manhunt of our generation, and Aussie actor, Joel Edgerton, is in the thick of the Zero Dark Thirty action ere you obsessed with The Secret Life of Us like I was? Couldn’t get enough of that television series back from around 2001. One of the stand-out stars of the series, evidently, was Joel Edgerton, who this month is starring in Academy Award Winner, Kathryn Bigelow’s new offering Zero Dark Thirty. This film chronicles the declassified true story of the greatest manhunt in history. For ten years, a relentless pursuit by an elite team of intelligence and military operatives ensued across the globe, with an aim towards one single goal: identify the whereabouts of the most wanted man on the planet and bring his reign of terror to an end. Director, Kathryn Bigelow, has teamed up with writer, Mark Boal, to tell the story in its cinematic form. The pair have again joined forces following their The Hurt Locker (2008) success, and lead an all-star cast to bring to life the intricate backstory and gripping reality behind the raid on May 2, 2011 that saw the U.S. Navy’s Seal Team Six overcome Osama bin Laden. Particularly poignant for American viewers, there’s a lot of awards buzz surrounding this movie, which also features Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life,The Help), Kyle Chandler (Argo,TV’s Friday Night Lights),James Gandolfini (Killing Them Softly, TV’s The Sopranos) and another rising Aussie star, Jason Clarke. It’s fair to assume this role will showcase Joel, and his talent we’ve long noted on a local front, to a wider international audience. Pretty exciting for a hard-working actor who hails from Blacktown in New South Wales. In the film, Joel plays Squadron Team Leader, Patrick. He says, “Kathryn and Mark were obsessed with every detail. We were under the scrutiny of an actual retired Navy SEAL on the
JOELEDGERTON
joel set, constantly asking ‘how do they enter a room?’ ‘how do they carry their arms?’ It never stopped.” Kathryn Bigelow says she sought actors who could capture the intense personalities of Navy SEALS for roles in her film, and also those who could withstand the rigorous training associated with intensive Special Forces style boot camps. She says, “Joel has a very quiet, intense presence and you immediately feel his authority and strength. He made Patrick an accessible character, which was so important to the climax of the film. He has a natural leadership quality that makes him very believable as a leader of men.” Regardless of this film being a foray towards A-lister status, Joel’s a seasoned star of stage and screen. It was Secret Life that gave the then 27-year-old his first big entertainment break in 2001. He was nominated for an AFI Award for his work playing Will on the series, and the exposure lead to his casting as Uncle Owen in the Star Wars films, shot in New South Wales a few years ago. He’s since starred in memorable favourites like British comedy Kinky Boots (2005), Warrior (2011), AFI and Sundance winner Animal Kingdom (2010), Smokin’ Aces (2006), and The Square (2008)
directed by his brother, Nash Edgerton. This year he’s also featured in Baz Luhrmann’s fabulous remake of The Great Gatsby (filmed in Sydney over the past year). While Zero Dark Thirty and Gatsby inevitably rake in the acclaim and dollars, Joel will be well into his next project, filming of a psychological thriller, Felony, which he’s also written. In the film he will portray an officer who runs a young cyclist off the road after an evening of celebratory drinking. He lies about the accident to his fellow officers which results in changing all their lives. The film is set to be directed by Noise director, Matthew Saville. It’s exciting to track young talent from Australia as their careers gradually step up to the big league. Joel’s always been talented − on camera and even behind-the-scenes − so it’s no wonder his star appears to be shining brighter and brighter. As he steps into the Hollywood limelight ever more, at least we can say back home,‘I remember when I was a fan of him back in the Secret Life days’. Zero Dark Thirty is screening in cinemas around Australia now, more at iconmovies.com.au.
