FOOD TRUCK
FESTIVAL
elcome to 2020 Get it girls! The presents have been opened, the champagne has been sipped, and the celebrations have lit up the skylines of cities all over the world. Now, it’s time to enter a new year and all that it entails. But don’t get disheartened that the party has halted (for the moment at least), we have some special treats in store for you that will cure those January blues in no time! Though before we get started, let’s hit pause on ticking off those New Year’s resolutions fast and furiously, pop that planner away (yes you), and think about everything we have already accomplished. And by this, I mean creating a reverse bucket list. Think about the countries that you have visited, those classes you have taken, the time you were promoted or the marathon you ran. Sometimes we’re so busy looking forward we forget to acknowledge what we have managed to tick off the list! It gives us motivation to keep moving forward and a little more clarity about what we still want to accomplish. Now that you’ve done the hard work, get ready to dive into another Gold Coast summer with our amazing reads this issue. We have two eye-opening pieces that’ll make you rethink New Year’s resolutions, another that will take you back in time with an incredibly interesting story about an Australian staple (the bikini), and a feature that investigates how to actually accomplish everything while feeling less busy. Not to mention, there’s also gorgeous swimwear, deliciously healthy recipes, as well as the very latest on incredible Gold Coasters and health and beauty. We hope you find that this issue is the perfect way to unwind from the craziness of the holidays (before all goes back to normality), and that it inspires you to take on the new year with gumption! Just remember to carry a bit of that New Year’s Eve sparkle with you throughout the year… you can find it in self-care, loving well, working hard and a great pair of shoes.

GET IT I GET THINKING
Does this bikini make my butt look big… enough?

—By Krysten Davis —
Enjoy a premium shopping experience!
kay. I just don’t get it. What is the obsession with big butts? And why do people feel the need to wear teeny, tiny, bikini bottoms that leave their arses swinging in the breeze? In my formative years we had something called ‘butt-minimising jeans’, and we did everything we possibly could to make our backsides appear as small as possible. And we had very different idols of beauty compared to the Kardashians of today. (I’m sure you remember the girl who played the love interest in Footloose… she practically has no backside at all!) My teenage daughter recently commented that an article of clothing would look better on me, because quote, “You’ve got a bigger bum than me.” What! I prickled in indignation (although she’s right — I do have a bigger bum than her) when she looked at me with consternation, “Mum, that’s a compliment!” Not in my day, sweetheart.

One of the fastest growing cosmetic surgery procedures is the ‘Brazilian Butt Lift’ (the other fastest growing is labiaplasty — don’t even get me started). In a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) they take fat from somewhere else (i.e. your love handles) and inject it into your butt — TO MAKE IT BIGGER! This procedure has a mortality (i.e. you die) rate of about 1:3000. So… for every 3,000 people having this procedure, on average, one will get a fatal fat embolus and never wear a bikini (or anything else) ever again! I’m all for body positivity, embrace those curves! I just struggle with the concept of bare-arsed beach wear; I think it’s a generational thing?

GET IT I NEW YEAR
Why
Before asking how, ask who! This is critical. Most of us are taught to focus on how to achieve the goal (such as, “I’m going to start exercising again”), without ever considering WHO they need to be in order to execute the how. Ask yourself what type of person do I need to be in order to reach this goal? Using language like this will elicit your values and form a solid foundation to build this new version of you upon. For example, "I need to be committed, disciplined and willing to sacrifice short term pleasure in the form of food and couch time." This is important because when you are faced with the temptation to eat out or skip a session (which will come!) you can connect with these values and BE the person who makes the right choice for you. Do what you said you were going to do! This is so simple that most people miss it. There is no magic, there is no real secret. If the 92 per cent of people who are going to fail in 2020 simply just turned up and did exactly what they said they were going to do, then every single one of them would reach their goals. Most people know how to achieve their goals, they just don’t follow through. The point is: it doesn’t matter if you’re tired, it’s raining, there’s something good on Netflix, or your friend is twisting your arm, if you just do what you said you would do when you first set the goal you will be amazed at just how far you go. Ask yourself ONE question only When faced with a temptation or a roadblock stop and ask yourself this question: “What would the best version of me do?” Whatever the answer is deep down in your heart, do that! Again, this is simple but incredibly effective.
NEW YEAR’S
Ready to write down those resolutions for 2020? You might want to rethink your approach… founder and director of Awakened Lifestyles, Anthony Noud, explains
t’s that time of year again. Weight loss and health goals, grand plans for financial success, and firm commitments to “making this year my year” are being thrown around everywhere. It is the period of the New Year’s resolution. Let me be crystal clear: New Year’s resolutions truly suck. This isn’t opinion, but fact. Statistically, 92 per cent of people will fail to achieve their resolution altogether, and of those, 75 per cent won’t get past the 30-day mark with their new endeavour. While I actually agree that the turn of the new year is a very opportune time to turn over a new leaf and reset some personal goals, if actually reaching them is important to you, it might be time to re-think the resolution. The steps to a resolution that actually lasts: Consider your WHY Before pulling out the same 10kg weight loss goal you set last year, stop and consider why exactly this is important to you. What will reaching this goal actually do for you? How will it make you feel? What will I do more of/have more of/experience more of once accomplished? Hint: when you go deep enough on this question you will reach a feeling. Typically, something like, “I’ll be happy and content.” This is important as this is what you are truly seeking. For example, having abs for abs’ sake is kinda weird — they’re strange bumps on your stomach — it’s the feeling you’ll have when you get the abs that make it worthwhile. January 2020
resolutions suck
Realise that it’s not supposed to be easy Many of us set goals expecting great results and then get discouraged when things don’t go as planned. Newsflash — they were never going to go as planned! If it was supposed to be easy, then you’d have already done it and wouldn’t have to have set a goal in the first place... Make peace with this. Accept that it’s really going to take something, and so it should. If the easy and painless way was ever going to work it would have by now, right? You know deep down that this is important to you. That’s why you set it. There is a part of you inside that knows you are destined for more. In order to make this goal a reality you will need to welcome and connect with this part of you and honour yourself enough to be the person you know you can be. In truth, this is one of the most self-loving things one can do.
Awakened Lifestyles We work with high-functioning humans who are stuck in their head and chasing external success yet feel empty inside, helping them to face their inner fears and become happy, and content, every single day. For more, follow Anthony on Instagram, @anthonyinnerwork.

GIRLS
Kathleen Loxton gets to know Hit90.9’s breakfast hosts, and the hilarious women behind ‘Those Two Girls’, Lise Carlaw and Sarah Wills
January 2020
Website: hit.com.au Instagram: @liseandsarah
Kathleen: ‘Those Two Girls’ has become so well known! In a few words, how would you describe ‘Those Two Girls’? Lise and Sarah: We’re just two best friends who delight in laughing — at each other, but more often with each other. We’ve turned our chemistry into a career, but beneath all of that is enormous trust. Everything we say yes to, from radio to TV spots to live events and content creation, is punctuated with our own brand of humour, banter and authenticity. K: Can you tell us the story of how this partnership came about? L: Sarah stalked me on Facebook. She’s a Stage-5 clinger like that. S: It’s true. I have a sixth sense. K: What’s an average day like for you both? L & S: Alarm goes off at around 3:45am. We’re at work by 4:15am to prepare for our National Early Breakfast show, broadcast around the country from 5-6am. At 6am, we change studios and move into our Gold Coast breakfast show, which we co-host with two fantastic guys, Dan Anstey and Ben Hannant. We’re on air until just after 9am and then may have a couple of meetings with our content director, producer, the promo/PR teams, etc. Some days we roll straight into client meetings or activations, or filming for social media. If the planets are in our favour, sometimes we get a couple of hours to ourselves in the middle of the day, but come 3pm it’s a head-first dive into parental duties. It. Is. Busy. K: What encourages or motivates you? L & S: Each other. We’re always one another’s sounding board, both professionally and personally. We have big plans and those plans require a lot of hard work, patience and gumption. K: Do you do New Year's resolutions, if so, do you have any for 2020? L: I’ve been listing ‘dry body brushing’ and ‘drink more water’ as resolutions since the late 90s. I’ve also tried the ‘pick a word for the New Year’ thing… but I always forget my word by mid-February. S: It’s important to have achievable resolutions, so I’d simply like to remember to bring my numerous reusable bags out of the car boot when I do the groceries. (It’s quite confronting for surrounding shoppers to see a 39-year-old woman giving herself uppercuts at the registers every time she has to pay 15c for yet another plastic bag.) K: What’s the best thing about being with Hit? L & S: The creative and funny, funny people we get to work with on both shows and throughout the network, which makes the stupid-o’clock alarms worthwhile. K: Any tricks to getting over the January blues? L: I find decluttering exceptionally thrilling and cathartic.Throwing out my surplus of spatulas after watching Marie Kondo on Netflix left me on a high, so I'm all about culling postChristmas! S: I try and sleep my way through the month. 14

HISTORY
in
In celebration of summer, Kirsty Davis takes a look back in time at the extravagant history of the bikini aula Stafford started creating the two-piece in the 1930s for her own use, until more and more women began asking to buy one off her. This was just the start to Paula’s bikini-career success. In celebration of Paula turning 100-years-old in June this year, let us take you on a trip down bikini memory lane… 1913 — Carl Jantzen debuts a two-piece bathing suit at the Olympics, 13 years after women are admitted to compete. The two-piece consisted of shorts on the bottom and a t-shirt on the top, but it was tight enough to cause a bit of a scandal. 1936 — Paula Stafford starts turning her one-piece swimwear into the well-known bikini. Women start asking Paula to make some for them, and Paula begins selling her new phenomenon from The Tog Shop. 1946 — French fashion designer, Jacques Heim, introduces a minimalist two-piece design into his beach shop in May. The design is named the ‘Atome’, after the smallest known particle of matter, which suited the design as it was the smallest swimsuit of its time. One month later, French Engineer, Louis Réard, introduces his design for an even smaller bikini. Using four triangles of fabric, making up just 30 inches of fabric, Louis created the next controversial bikini. Showgirl Micheline Bernardini debuts the swimsuit at a popular swimming pool in the centre of Paris. Louis describes the twopiece as a suit which “reveals everything about a girl except for her mother’s maiden name”. With the bikini war intensifying, both Jacques and Louis were at the centre of it all, receiving ten thousand letters of hate. But, both designers took that as an opportunity to gain more exposure, seeing both head to the skies to advertise by recruiting skywriters to fly around the Mediterranean and the French Riviera.

1951 — Australian, Mediterranean and European beaches close their doors to bikinis, introducing a ban following the first Miss World contestant in London and the Vatican declaring the skimpy two-piece swimsuit as ‘sinful’. But shockingly, this causes more love towards Louis and Jacques, with Louis receiving 50,000 fan letters, leading him to launch an aggressive ad campaign saying it’s not a real bikini “unless it could be pulled through a wedding ring”. American actress, Jean Parker, is also making headlines after she’s escorted off Sydney’s Bondi Beach because her bikini was too skimpy. 1953 — Brigitte Bardot caught everyone’s eye at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival, where she is photographed wearing a floral bikini on the beach in the south of France. The photographs stunned everyone, but Modern Girl magazine is not impressed, writing, “it is hardly necessary to waste words over the socalled bikini since it is inconceivable that any girl with tact and decency would ever wear such a thing”.

Playboy follows suit, putting a bikini on its cover for the first time this year.

Annette has started filming for the next movies in the sequel, Bikini Beach, Muscle Beach Party and Beach Blanket Bingo. 1966 — Raquel Welch is photographed in a deerskin bikini for the movie One Million Years BC, making the tattered swimsuit/loincloth more famous than the film itself. 1983 — The bikini takes on outer space as Carrie Fisher’s character, Princess Leia from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, rocks a gold bikini made of brass. 1988 — While the bikini phenomenon is becoming more popular than ever, the bikini itself is becoming smaller than ever. But, that wasn’t the only thing turning heads, the live diamond python wrapped around her neck also caused quite a stir. 2003 — Going back to basics, Demi Moore made a splash when she walked out of the ocean in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and Blue Crush, in a black two-piece that was described by The New York Times as “the millennial equivalent of the power suit”. 2006 — Think the $5 million bikini was extravagant? Wait until you see the bikini designed by Susan Rosen. Made up of over 150 carats of diamonds and worth a reported $40 million, this two-piece makes up the world’s most expensive bikini and debuted in the 2006 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. 2010 — Animal rights organisation PETA works with celebrities, including Pamela Anderson, who wears a bikini made from iceberg-lettuce to help promote vegetarianism in a PETA campaign. Eva Herzigova brings in a retro-looking leather bikini to the mix, which shockingly, can also double as an outfit!

“As women in our ever-changing society, we need to be proud and confident in our skin. Bring on a bikini summer!” 2018 — The size of the bikini is taken to a whole other level, with both the top and the bottom becoming almost non-existent. Tammy Hembrow takes the term risque up a notch after she posts photos in a thinstrapped bikini with only a small slither of fabric covering herself. 2019 — Say goodbye to cleavage and hello to underboob! This new hot trend is becoming more and more prevalent, with Instagram and runways full of it. Miami Swim Week 2019 is underboob galore as the models strut their stuff in the bold design. Ladies, if this hasn’t forced you into that summer feeling, I don’t know what will. So, grab your girlfriends and your bikinis (or those gorgeous one-pieces) and enjoy what Gold Coast beaches have to offer!
WHAT DOES THE BIKINI MEAN TO GET IT’S READERS? CARO KELLY “To me, bikinis represent freedom, summer, and confidence. After having four children and feeling very self-conscious about my body, I have learned over time that I need to be proud of my body. I carried four beautiful children, and each mark on my body represents a story. As women in our ever-changing society, we need to be proud and confident in our skin. Bring on a bikini summer!” January 2020
JO DAVIS “Being young and carefree, playing backyard cricket, in my polka dot bikini, at my grandparent's holiday house and lazing in our pool at home with friends and brothers.”

FIONA STEPHENS “The bikini reminds me of my childhood, it reminds me of surf, of just being free, running around, jumping in the pool, jumping in the ocean and having a good time. But, I do remember the Meter Maids at Surfers Paradise — they always had these gold bikinis on. And I always thought, what a job, how cool!”

GET IT I BUSINESS e all have the same number of hours in the week (168 to be exact). So why does that time look — and feel — vastly different to different people? Most of us are scrambling, like the proverbial hamsters on a wheel, we never feel like there’s enough time and are never able to run fast enough to keep up with it all. Then there are those people who seem to have more space, achieve more professionally, fit in exercise, socialising, sleep and they don’t even seem to break a sweat. What’s their secret? Many of the world’s most successful people schedule their time with military precision — like Bill Gates whose long days are carved into “five-minute slices, with every meeting and handshake timed to the second”. There is no need for us all to be this rigid, however, a little planning can certainly help us move from the feeling of treading water to forward momentum and regaining control of our lives. As a result of this, we not only work smarter and improve our wellbeing, we create space to recharge and reconnect with ourselves and those we love. This enables both our productivity and the quality of our performance to increase. Start by considering what your ideal day would look like and write it down. Be specific. Include everything from the glass of water you drink upon waking up, to coffee breaks, time for exercise, how you will spend transit time (listening to a podcast? Reading? Thinking?), when you would read your emails, how you will wind down and how you will spend time with friends or family. Consider how and when you would incorporate each of these elements into your day: Specific time to move; fuel; recharge; connect; think and play. The process of writing down your ideal day gives you a framework and a vision.Think about your current day (noncontrolled chaos) and then compare it to an Ideal Day (utopia). At the very least, meet me halfway and start taking control of your time, energy and attention. Start by adding three or four simple activities to your morning routine. These can be as simple as a glass of water with a squeeze of lemon, a quick walk before work, a break for morning tea. These will then become performance habits – beneficial actions triggered automatically in response to contextual cues. Once you start to self-regulate and feel momentum from your new behaviours, add a few more. Then some more. Keep building upon this process over a period of weeks and you’ll be surprised at just how much better your day can be. Once you know how much more time and energy, clarity and connection you can create in a single day, it’s time to build a better week. This incorporates accountability and sets a clear vision for the future. Will it be ideal, even perfect? No. It’s called life and ‘stuff’ invariably happens. But will it start to feel better? Absolutely.

• Prioritise what is most important to you. This might be family time, or recovery time, or exercise. • Stop reacting to other people’s demands and take control by locking in the activities that are most important to you. And remember to plan some time alone for yourself. • Include permanent meetings and bookings, but remember that your goal is to free up time. • Don’t worry if you find it difficult to plan your Better Week — if you find you’ve forgotten activities, for instance, or not allowed yourself enough time. It usually takes a few goes to get it right. • Once you’re happy with your Better Week, open your diary and book in the relevant training sessions and so on for the next three months. When the dates are in your diary, you’ll be more motivated to stick to them. • Review and update your Better Week plan every quarter to ensure that it stays meaningful and relevant. • Acknowledge that you will need to be flexible as you strive to live your Better Week, but aim high — there’s no point admitting defeat before you’ve even begun! Your Better Week won’t happen perfectly and completely. But if you can regularly achieve 70 per cent, you will feel more content and in control. 20
GET IT I NEW YEAR
YOUR NEW YEAR INTENTIONS RE-THINK Bronwen Sciortino encourages us to look at how our intentionsetting tasks have served in the past, and offers alternative ideas on how to make resolutions really count ere we are again! Time flies so quickly — have you even had a chance to think about what’s ahead? It’s about now that we’re bombarded with messages telling us about all the things we ‘need’ to be doing to be the best version of ourselves this year, and in the busy-ness of it all, it’s easy not to get caught up! ‘New year, new you’, ‘lose weight gained from festive overconsumption’, ‘get fitter, leaner, stronger…’. On and on and on it goes. Exhausting! What’s your annual process? It’s important to switch off from this bombardment and really consider what you’d like to get out of the year ahead. If you’re not sure where to start, have a look at how you’ve set intentions in previous years, and ask yourself a few questions: l What process have I used to set intentions? l Do I have the same intentions each year? l Have I achieved the goals I set for myself?
l
Have I been hard on myself when I haven’t achieved what I set out to do? Don't stress – it's not you, it's the process It’s highly likely that the reason you haven’t achieved your resolutions is because they weren’t yours anyway. Most of us set intentions based on the things that we’re told we ‘need’ to be doing. Whether it’s our family, friends or Facebook, we’re regularly told about the things that are wrong, and the areas we need to ‘work on’. A warning: whenever we follow what someone else thinks is right for us, we hand over control of our lives, and in the process, we end up living a life that isn’t ours. Getting things done Numerology for the year 2020 is 4 (2 + 0 + 2 + 0 = 4). The number four is recognised as the number of foundations, materiality, practicality and prosperity. It represents building doorways and it is the number of ‘work’: getting things done. That means that 2020 is a year perfectly designed to focus on faith and trust, and to seriously start to create your life based 21
on the perfect solution for YOU. Perhaps now is the time to acknowledge that your intention-making process might not be serving you. I’d like to encourage you to step into a different way of thinking, one that involves less stress and provides you with an easier way to connect with what you truly need and desire. From exhausted to energised… Make the focus for 2020 the refuelling of yourself, so that you will always have the energy you need to truly enjoy your life. Instead of trying to be a ‘better’ version of you, focus instead on being the ‘whole’ version of yourself. You are unique and perfect exactly as you are. You don’t need to be better; you simply need to be whole. There’s plenty of resources to get you started, both in the magazine you’re reading, online and in your local community. Relationship
Get it’s Love Guru, and Ideal Introductions Professional Matchmaker, Linda Prescott, reveals the top relationship goals to stick to in 2020
ow, another year, another chapter. How time flies! This is when you start seeing all sorts of New Year’s resolutions all over social media. But when it comes to love and relationships, are there things you could embrace to grow and strengthen your romantic relationship? Start courting each other again Remember those butterflies in your stomach? That excitement of seeing your partner? Sometimes when you’ve been in a relationship for a while, life gets in the way and you tend to leave the romance in the background and forget all the exciting things you used to do to make each other happy. But guess what? It’s not too late to reignite the passion. Start planning dates again — maybe once a fortnight, or once a month, where you get dressed up and go out looking ready to sizzle. Don’t just stop at dinner. Plan your date as if you’ve just met — go on romantic walks by the beach, have a quiet picnic just the two of you. These are the same tips I give our clients and I have seen their relationships grow and become more exciting. Focus on seeing the good While this may be easier said than done, January 2020
goals optimism and gratitude make for a happy life. If your partner has done things to annoy you (making a mess around the house, forgetting to take the recyclables out, not remembering things you say), instead of constantly thinking about it, try and reframe your thoughts into a more positive space. Focusing so much on the negative things can really make you resent your partner, and that would not be good for the relationship. This coming year shift your thoughts and focus on seeing their good side — the good fun that you have together, the support they give you when you’re down, and the things that they do for you without fail. Remember, you’re also human and also come with your own set of positives and negatives. So be forgiving and focus on the good stuff. Just say it Okay, okay. It can be really annoying and hurtful that your partner still doesn’t know what you want. Or at least know you enough to figure it out. But you know what? We’re all human and no one can read minds (even X-Men’s Xavier is total fiction). So instead of expecting your partner to know everything, push that ego and negativity away and say what you mean. Be honest about what you want, what you expect, what’s hurting you and what’s disappointing you. Do you miss being held? Do you want more intimacy? Only by communicating how you feel inside can your 22

partner truly understand you. At the same time, you will need to allow your partner to be able to do the same. But wait, this isn’t just about arguments. If being honest about what you want can help improve your relationship, imagine what it can do to your sex life! Do the unexpected According to Psychologist Dr Seth Meyers, “Once you have been with someone for many years, you already know that person well and there is far less to discover — and to pique excitement — than when you were each a blank slate.” So, you know what that means. You both need to inject new elements into your relationship — be unexpected, be spontaneous. For example, try and surprise your partner by picking them up from work on a Friday and driving straight to your weekend staycation. Or try a new activity together that will help you reconnect. Some couples have found that golfing together helps them talk more while enjoying nature, others have tried fun activities like hopping on a wine bus, going on a chocolate tour or enjoying a couple’s massage. Whatever ideas you have, just remember, it's all about having fun and trying something new. I hope these tips will help you and your partner find yourselves in a happier and more content space. May 2020 be your year!
Your new normal l
Family Lawyer Fiona Browne offers advice on how to adjust to life following separation or divorce eparation means big changes – breaks from the kids when they’re with their other parent, and no more responsibility for looking after another adult. It might seem enviable to get some of that time back. The reality though, can be confronting. Too much time to think is lonely, and it might feel like you will never get past that. As a result, depression is common after separation or divorce, particularly if you must go to the Family Court for an outcome. Separation is bad enough. Going to court, though sometimes necessary, can be damaging to what remains of the family dynamics. What’s wrong with going to court? l The Family Court is still a court. You will experience the same feelings as you would in any other litigation. You will go before a judge and be cross-examined. l No one can expect to ‘win’ in this type of situation. l Do not expect that your ex will be held to account. The best the court can do is to make decisions based on the evidence. Things are not always clear.
Expect delays to get to hearing and a lengthy wait for a final decision. The emotional stress experienced in a litigated family law matter is significant, but sometimes there’s no avoiding having to go through it. As part of adjusting to life after separation, you may need to seek assistance from a family lawyer. Most clients do not need to go through a lengthy court battle – normally an outcome can be negotiated. But whatever your circumstances, it takes time to recover and to adjust to life’s ‘new normal’.
"Going to court, though sometimes necessary, can be damaging to what remains of the family dynamics." Four tips for adjusting to life after separation or divorce (particularly where you are involved in a Family Law matter): Consider counselling When a relationship or marriage ends, consideration should be given to counselling. It can help you with adjusting to your new situation. You’ll also learn strategies for dealing with and managing your family law matter and the final orders. There are no ‘winners’ in a family law matter. There are emotional and financial consequences for both parties. Having an independent person to ‘check-in’ with can assist in recognising when you are acting in an emotionally driven manner and will also prevent you from offloading onto your friends and family. 23
Comply with court orders Whether you have reached an agreement privately through mediation or following a trial, you must comply with the court orders. Breaching a court order can have serious ramifications. The end results can include a costs order or in the most serious case the court may order that a person be sentenced to imprisonment for up to 12 months. Family dynamics and parental behaviour Divorce and separation forever alter the dynamics of a family unit. If you have children, it is essential to work towards creating a ‘new normal’ for everyone. It is not the end once you have the final order from the Family Court. Particularly in parenting matters, there is the prospect of many years of required interaction with your former spouse. A counsellor or mediator can assist with ironing out issues. Sitting across the table from someone who has an entrenched view may be difficult, but the experience of family law litigation is much more stressful and expensive. If all else fails, contact your family lawyers and work together to negotiate any issues. Take time out for yourself You may not have your children with you all the time. Make the most of the alone time. Do the things that you enjoyed before having children or things you’ve not had time for. Join a gym, take a TAFE course or volunteer to help your favourite charity. These are activities that will benefit you in the long term and steer you in a positive direction. LESS busy
Linda Nicol has become an expert at managing time. Business owner, farm manager, mum to five children under eight whose husband works away during the week: she shares her story and lessons on shedding stress, saying no, and arriving on time…
“
I found myself working late at night and weekends, I was tired and snappy. The easy going, laid-back person I used to be was gone. I was missing precious moments with my family, there physically but not mentally. I realised something had to change. I had to figure a way to make this work, after all, my situation wasn’t going to change — I had to change.

to know how you do it!’ At first, I didn’t take it seriously, after all I was just a working mum. I researched productivity courses, only to discover few focus specifically on helping mums. So, I had the idea to launch my own productivity coaching business. Every tool I use is a twominute implementation exercise and has lifetime benefit. I — we — do not have time for complicated solutions.
o you feel so busy that it’s like you wear more hats than a centipede has shoes? You’re not alone! The good news is, it doesn’t have to be like this. In fact, you can get it all done by doing less, and you’ll feel more fulfilled in the process. With all of today’s demands and the never-ending phone beeping, pinging, vibrating and popping up grabbing our attention, it can be a challenge to get ‘everything’ done. We’re distracted and our time is consumed by potentially unimportant activity. To conquer this, we must live our days consciously and with intent, otherwise we will be swept along like a leaf in the wind. How do we take charge? The key is planning. The act of planning your day forces you to focus on what’s important. By taking time to plan, you consciously think about how you will spend your time. This awareness of how you will be spending your day then helps eliminate one of the biggest drains on time: other people’s requests. SAY NO If you’re aware that your day is full, and you have no free time, you’re less inclined to say yes when other people ask for help. Learning to say ‘no’ is one of the most important skills you need to practice if you want to be in control of your day. GET YOUR PRIORITIES RIGHT Identify urgent and important tasks. These are the only things that should be added to your to-do-list. If a task is urgent but not important, delegate (that includes to your children). If the task is neither important nor urgent, don’t do it. By looking at your to-do list in this way, you can drop tasks that are not taking you towards your dream life and are freeing up time for things that will. LEARNING THE HARD WAY I’d love to be able to say that I’ve always been organised and productive, but the reality is that I had no choice but to learn. In a relatively short space of time I went from being a single, corporate career girl, to being married, an entrepreneur and mum to triplet boys. If I’m honest I’m not sure working in itself would have made me so organised, but throw in a set of triplets and oh boy, I had to get my act together. I went on to have

another two children (I had five under five), set up two more businesses and bought a farm. But the real clincher was that my husband works away from home. CHANGING WAYS OF WORKING Not having a support network and my husband only home on weekends, I began to draw on my routines from the corporate world. Through trial and error, I devised ways to be productive and efficient, in my businesses and my home life. I realised I could not sweat the small stuff. I eliminated time wasting tasks, delegated what I could and adopted the 80/20 rule (or Pareto principle which states that 80% of our result is achieved with the first 20% of the effort). Perfectionism was gone. I saw friends with one or two children stressed, unable to keep time. They would slide up to the school gates as the bell was ringing, lunch forgotten, sports uniform missing, permission notes late. I know it’s not easy and was grateful I’d worked on being able to arrive on time with my five children, with all the necessary items, and importantly for everyone, without the fuss or stress. Clearly my world operated differently to theirs. When I met these mums for coffee, it was apparent these traits were symptomatic of their whole life. Their stories were chaotic. I shared tips to make things easier, which was always appreciated. Often, I’d receive the comment and compliment, ‘I’d pay
25
Having gone through this journey I have come to the realisation that being able to do it all, stay sane and have ‘me time’ IS possible. You do not need the entourage of Beyoncé to de-stress your life. I have a regular life with regular problems, I just happen to have a lot of children. Getting it all done is not something that requires specialist knowledge, it’s something anyone can do. Put the time in first to plan, and gain time back tenfold. 7 ways to get more done while feeling less stressed
l
Plan your day ahead of time
l
Don’t be afraid to say NO to requests
l
Stop being a perfectionist
l
Mark tasks on your to-do list as ‘urgent’ and/or ‘important’ — if both, prioritise those tasks; if neither, drop them from your list
l
Delegate what you can (remembering again, it doesn’t have to be perfect)
l
Turn off notifications on your phone or computer, including for email — most of the time they’re unnecessary distractions from the task at hand
l
If you’re particularly productive in the morning, get up a little earlier and make the most of that time.

Salon shot by Richard Dion Wilson (photobase.com.au)
GET IT I SUCCESS
Making the cut Founder and owner of The End Hairdressing, Lisa Wilson, shares her inspiring story of managing single parenthood and running a business, all while living with a breast cancer diagnosis. Writes Kathleen Loxton
hen Lisa was 17, she left home to experience the world and quickly began a hairdressing apprenticeship, later opening her first salon in Brisbane at the age of 23. Soon after, Lisa unexpectedly started a family, but continued working for the next five years raising her daughter alone. Before long, Lisa settled into a relationship on the Gold Coast and had another daughter. For the next 15 years Lisa assisted her partner with the family business, whilst raising the children. When the relationship ended, though, Lisa needed to get back to work in order to support herself as a single parent. She sought to upskill, but faced difficulties returning to work (a struggle many mothers have, despite the experience they possess). However, this wasn’t the end of the challenges she was to face. Due to the difficulties of finding employment (and driven by caring for her children), Lisa (aged 48) chose to start a business in 2013, securing a small hairdressing salon called The End Salon, in Mermaid Beach. Lisa bravely took on the challenge to build the business from a non-existent client list into a success and worked hard to upskill before working on the floor. As Lisa described,“I don’t half do things and needed to learn quickly… I wouldn’t even pick up a blowdryer until I was ready.” During this time, Lisa was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she fiercely advocates for raising awareness, showing support, and spreading hope and love to those with the diagnosis, through honest conversation. As Lisa frankly told me,“I don’t think what I did was extraordinary — you do what you have to do in order to survive and early diagnosis is so important.” Since then, the family has grown; her eldest daughter now has three children under seven years of age. Lisa is actively involved in their lives and has her youngest daughter at home, who is in full-time study at university. If life wasn’t January 2020
busy enough, in 2018 Lisa took on the task of rebranding the business as The End Hairdressing and relocating it to a new address in Mermaid Beach. With responsibilities to family and employees, the stakes were at an all-time high; but as Lisa would say,“Failure was not an option.” The highs and lows didn’t stop there. In 2019, The End Hairdressing was a dual finalist at the Australian Hair Industry Awards (AHIA's), securing a Boutique Design Award nomination at the AHIAS's, while Lisa’s apprentice, Logan Cook, was also a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category. The dual nomination is quite an achievement and The End Hairdressing was the only Queensland salon in the Boutique Design category. The application process was dramatic to say the least, with Lisa in hospital just two weeks before the deadline, delaying the submission until moments before applications closed. Not to mention, during this time Lisa lost half of her staff due to a family relocation and change in career. Overcoming these challenges helped put Lisa and her team on the map for their next great adventure. In September, 2019, Lisa attended New York Fashion Week with Elite Hair Education, working beside Prema Hair, Anti Collective and under the creative direction of Franco Gobbi, for the fashion brand KAIMIN (a New York-based fashion house). Throughout the magical experience, Lisa thrived alongside the team producing hair creations for KAIMIN’s runway show — a brand that has been worn by the likes of Lady Gaga, Bjork, Nicki Minaj 26

and Katy Perry, to name a few. Today, the salon continues to shine and uphold Lisa’s dedication to education. This will persist into 2020, with Redken QLD educator, Brendon Kahl, partnering with The End Hairdressing to provide industry education on the Gold Coast. Chatting to her team, including senior stylists Scott Carter and Alyssa Watts, and apprentice Tara Haskell, it is clear they benefit from their work environment, set by Lisa’s example of resilience, self-belief, and willingness to keep learning.

We venture inside Designer Recycle Boutique, Arundel, and get to know owner and founder, Leanne Watson n Arundel there is a very unique store, a treasure trove filled with exquisite pieces from as far flung as Italy and Hawaii. Every item is carefully cared for by Leanne and her team, until a lucky customer takes it home. But how did Designer Recycle Boutique come about? Leanne’s passion for fashion at a young age led her to study in South Africa where
she completed a fashion designer course. She additionally spent time in England, learning about antiques and increasing her fashion knowledge, before returning home. Having worked at exclusive boutiques, two department stores, as well as modelling and organising multiple fashion shows and wedding events, Leanne was ready for her next challenge.Taking the plunge, she opened her first consignment boutique, Legends Boutique, in Western Australia, which soon branched out to a sister shop, a stunning consignment bridal house. Following their success, Leanne then went on to open her third consignment boutique, a combination of a bridal and fashion boutique, in far North Queensland. When she sold her store to a favourite customer, Leanne relocated to the Gold Coast and opened her fourth consignment boutique, Designer Recycle Boutique, bringing her vast experience with her. Of her career so far, Leanne noted,“I think that’s where my organisational skills come from, and my appreciation and knowledge of antiques and jewellery.” Today you can become part of this story and uncover your next style statement, while shopping consciously and creating memories. As Leanne recalled,“I remember when three generations were shopping in the store and each took away something special. The grandmother, the mother and teenage daughter, there was something for everyone.” Of all the original accessories, designer labels and pre-loved gems, what’s Leanne’s
favourite thing? “Helping people to find their treasures and telling them a bit about the history of the item.” There's a world of wonders awaiting you... Shop 19, Arundel Plaza, Napper Rd, Arundel Website: designerrecycleboutique.com.au Ph: (07) 5571 7084

Going
grombre
One woman’s journey to embracing the world of grombre, as told to Kathleen Loxton
woman’s relationship with her hair is often a complicated one, and I came to completely rethink my own in one simple moment. Call it an epiphany if you will… I was sitting with my accountant, sorting out my taxes and generally catching up with paperwork, when he turned to me and asked,“Do you know how much you’re spending getting your hair done?’’ (The cheek!) Now, had I kept tabs on the bottles of dye for in-between salon appointments and all the visits to my favourite hairdresser? No, but I knew it had been adding up lately. The fact my accountant asked me about it made me stop and think, why do we do it? Why do we feel, especially as women, the pressure to keep our natural colour for as long as possible? The more I thought about it the more I questioned it. So, men get to be ‘silver foxes’ while we just disappear into the abyss? I think not. Curious, I started investigating the trend I had seen lately of women who were choosing to go grey, often through an ombré effect (ombré is the French word for “colour that is shaded or graduated in tone”), and my research returned some fascinating results. Interestingly, searches for 'grombre' have sored since the start of last year, A-listers of all ages have been embracing the look, such as Pink and Lady Gaga, and this revolution has been spurred by social media, including the fabulous Instagram account, Grombre, which is dedicated to the movement and has over 152, 000 followers to date. What’s more, women who are going grey at an early age are embracing it in greater numbers than ever before, or even choosing to dye their hair grey before they’ve even spotted their first silver strand! 33
“So, men get to be ‘silver foxes’ while we just disappear into the abyss? I think not.” The point is, these women made the choice; whether it was for a style statement, political statement or simply for cost, it doesn’t matter. What matters is they are empowered, and rightly so, to change beauty standards and make choices about their bodies that are right for them. Of course, finding the right hairdresser and products for you is crucial, they can help you feel beautiful and are elements of self-care you should definitely invest wisely in. However, it’s also important that these reflect you; if you want to stay brunette for longer, do, if you feel like more highlights, go ahead. The choice is yours to have fun with! Another thing I reflected on through this, was my mother. She went grey at a very early age, and chose to go lighter and lighter, eventually going grey with the most exquisite blend of blonde and light-grey hair. She was certainly a frontrunner in this area of style, and I’m please I’ve decided to take a leaf out of her book. Your hair is your crowning glory, so what if it’s silver? Treat it well and shine your way.

Hello fashionistas! Happy New Year! A new year, a new you… After a few weeks of feasting and enjoying way too much Christmas spirit, it's time to regroup, restart, and regain control of your life. Make a New Year’s resolution — and stick to it! Exercise... You thought I said, 'extra fries'. I know, it's super hard to get motivated, and looking in your closet at clothing that may have ‘shrunk' in your wardrobe doesn’t help. But girls, no excuses. You can look super cool in workout wear! When trawling the stores for this look, remember to try before you buy. Many store brands can be different in sizing — find a brand that works for you, your lifestyle and your budget! Make sure this is comfortable and breathable for our Queensland climate. Let your leggings work — preferably 7/8 in length, if you want to elongate your legs. If you are bottom heavy, a darker colour on your bottom half will slim you down, though you can have fun from the waist up with colour. Or add some impact to a slimmer body shape with pattern. Looking for extras? A crop sports bra will support you, and you can cover up with a singlet or a knotfront T-shirt. Don't forget to accessorize to complete the look: shoes, water bottles, waist bag, hat, sunscreen and a very large attitude. So, girls... it's time to shape up! Remember, no pain, no gain! These are wise words, but you can pretend, and just look fabulous on your coffee dates with your friends. And nothing changes… if nothing changes! Stay stylish,

GET IT I MEN'S HEALTH
Why men
should
care about
weight gain
New research has revealed that one in three men let themselves go when reaching middle age, blaming bad food choices, alcohol and stress. Sarah Blinco finds out what’s really at stake… ew research by Cambridge Weight Plan has revealed that one in five (20%) men stop caring about weight gain when they reach middle age and two-thirds (66%) do not feel any pressure to be slim. Health experts are urging men not to be complacent. It’s not just about weight gain — rarely are any of us expected to ‘look perfect’; rather, it’s the associated serious health conditions that develop as a result of weight gain that are of real concern. International Slimmer of the Year entrant of 2019, Paul Averte tipped the scales at over 160kg last year. He says, “In one meal, I would have two bowls of pasta then have a bowl of salad thinking it was nutritious. I became so overweight that I developed sleep apnoea and suffered from severe back pain.” Paul admits that he never really gave his weight much attention. “I was distracted by other aspects in life that I thought were more important like my kids, so I just accepted myself the way I was. When I’d look in the mirror, I never really saw my size. I focused on whether or not the clothes matched and looked good.” January 2020
“Weight gain that places someone in the category of overweight or obese, has serious consequences and needs to be taken seriously,” says counselling psychologist Grant Spencer. This research found that 46% of men blame their middle age spread on bad food choices, 32% on alcohol and 29% on stress. Grant warns that we need to stop looking for excuses. “For middle age men, often other priorities like family and work are more urgent than focusing on themselves. Work and family are aspects of life you interact with all the time. Whereas things like self-care and looking after your body don’t seem urgent until the health implications start slowing you down. Exhaustion and a lack of energy are common symptoms of excess weight… More serious signs of deteriorating health due to weight gain are high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer.” Where to start then? Grant advises: “You must prioritise self-care which may mean making small sacrifices in the time you put into work and family. This can come with a lot of guilt, but it’s important to understand 36
I was distracted by other aspects in life that I thought were more important like my kids, so I just accepted myself the way I was. When I’d look in the mirror, I never really saw my size. I focused on whether or not the clothes matched and looked good. that your health and wellbeing directly impact your work, your family and your ability to care for them. That small shift in focus can help in starting the incremental change towards weight loss.” Grant reminds us that diet is very important and contributes to 80% of weight gain. “In saying that, don’t completely restrict yourself from the foods you love, just have small portions throughout the day. Consider one-on-one guidance throughout the weight loss journey, which keeps you accountable. Exercise is also important. As little as 30 minutes a day of exercise is healthy and can go a long way, not only for weight loss, but psychologically as well.”
MAKE THIS YOUR GOAL JACK SMITH FROM VISION PERSONAL TRAINING BUNDALL HELPS US WITH OUR 2020 RESOLUTIONS
very January we see the rapid onset of people starting a new diet or training program. But did you know of the people that join a gym in January, 80 per cent no longer maintain the habit after 12 months? Of the rest that are still consistent, about half have actually moved forward with their health and fitness. Why is that, do you ask? There are a multitude of reasons… With greater access to nutrition advice than ever before — the internet, recipe books, Instagram, Facebook, celebrity chefs and cooking shows — it’s vital to focus on how nutrition impacts results. To make things harder, it seems as though every week there is a celebrity who has got in the best shape of their life on this ‘brand new’ diet (paleo, blood type, carnivore), and we even compare our nutrition habits to that of movie stars. We look around this landscape for ‘what’s new’ and ‘what gets us the quickest results’, often forgetting that each individual is completely different! Many people have made a lot of money by selling a quick-fix solution, but the long-term consequences on differing metabolisms can be catastrophic if we don’t look at the individual’s requirements. That’s right: we are all made up differently and therefore our nutrition needs to be tailored, so it’s vital to ignore the noise that’s generically pumped into the media. When considering your choices and goals, here are the factors that come into play… l The food we like and enjoy: No nutrition plan will have long-term success if you don’t enjoy at least some of the meals. Often the mindset around dieting is eating lettuce leaves and carrot sticks, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth once you understand your body’s requirements. l Quality ingredients: Our body thrives when the majority of the fuel we put in it comes from fresh ingredients from a variety of sources, which are full of vitamins and minerals to keep our immune system strong and energy levels up. l The goals we set: To lose fat, we need to eat slightly less than our body
37
requires on a daily basis to ensure our body uses fat as fuel (to gain weight it’s the opposite). Once you calculate this (e.g. lose 5kg, run a marathon), it’s simply a case of putting the right amount of fuel in your body. l Our individual metabolism: About 2/3 of the energy we burn every day is due to the amount of lean muscle mass in our body. Simply put, the more muscle we maintain or build through quality nutrition and weight training, the more energy our body burns each day. Therefore, we can actually train our body to maintain or lose weight and eat more food! l Daily activity levels: Another factor in how much energy our body needs is daily activity. An office worker will always burn less energy through the day than a labourer, simply because of the amount of bodily movement. l How we look at the energy we eat: By splitting what we eat into macronutrients — carbohydrates for energy, protein for muscle synthesis, fat for energy and hormone production, alcohol for energy — we can understand why our body may have reacted to certain diets differently. By eating mainly carbohydrates with little protein, we will always struggle to maintain muscle mass, which affects so much of our metabolism, but by eating mainly protein we wouldn’t have the energy to get through the day. Unless the background work is done to ensure it is correct for you, a diet will only work for so long before it can’t be sustained, or the body adapts. Spending the time to learn the fundamentals of nutrition, learning to see through the fads, myths and trends, will hold you in better position for future success. Even better? By consulting with a trained professional, who can get specific guidance and tailor measurements, you are much more likely to succeed long term and finally tick off that New Year’s resolution to get into the best shape of your life!

THE 6 NEW
BENEFITS
of
EXERCISE
Andrew May, one of the world’s leading strategists on workplace performance and wellbeing, takes us through the six surprising benefits of exercising hysical fitness has nothing to do with the way you look. Instead of thinking about having chiselled pecs or long, slender legs, why don’t we advertise how fitness makes you smarter, improves memory, helps increase energy levels and reduces the risk of brain deterioration and dementia? We all know that regular fitness training improves your body shape and helps you get into the skinny black dress or those budgie smugglers you bought before life ‘caught up’ with you. However, we need to see exercise as the magic elixir it is, capable of transforming the way our brain functions, and of keeping us healthier and happier throughout our (longer) lives. Let’s look at six key benefits. Physical activity makes you smarter Fact: regular exercise helps you grow more brain cells. Recent research shows exercise helps prevent age-related decrease in brain matter, enhances cognitive flexibility and reduces the risk of developing dementia.1 But simply having more brain cells isn’t enough. They need to be connected and in communication with other parts of the brain in order to be useful. A good way to pull these new neurons into the brain’s superhighway is to learn something new —– maybe a language, or a musical instrument. Once you have those extra neurons firing, you need to make them nimble. This is where exercise helps again, improving the connection of the neurons by increasing levels of brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). Most brain changes have occurred from cardiovascular exercise, like walking or running, but all forms of physical activity provide benefits. So whether you’re training for a marathon or walking to the shops, the message is clear: getting moving will improve your brainpower. Physical activity boosts your energy levels Fact: exercise builds more mitochondria, which are responsible January 2020
for producing energy in the body. When you feel foggy and fatigued at work, the last thing you feel like doing is exercise. However, even a small burst of activity, as little as 20 minutes, will dramatically boost your energy levels. A University of Georgia study reported that sedentary people who normally complained of chronic lethargy increased their energy by 20% and decreased fatigue by as much as 65% by participating in regular, low-intensity exercise.2 Physical activity helps you retire Fact: exercise improves the quality of your life post-retirement. Way too many people neglect their health for years and then retire and are unable to do simple things like play golf, pick up their grandkids or go on a cruise. Sedentary living speeds up age-related declines in muscle mass, lung function, strength and aerobic endurance. Exercise can attenuate this decline, resulting in reduced risk of cardiovascular and other diseases. Keeping yourself fit as you age also helps you complete the activities of daily life with ease, keeping you truly independent for longer. Physical activity inspires your children Fact: overweight parents have a much higher likelihood of having overweight children. I received a fair bit of blowback on social media for having the audacity to talk about this on ABC News Breakfast. Although there are many causes of obesity, parental weight and lifestyle habits influence the weight of their children. Obesity in fathers is associated with up to a fourfold increase in risk of obesity at the age of 18 years in both sons and daughters. With mothers up to an eightfold increase risk of obesity has been observed in daughters.3 So getting active is good for you — obviously — but it’s also an investment in the future of 38
your children. In fact, evidence suggests that changing parents’ behaviours is more effective than solely trying to change children’s behaviour. Physical activity improves your mood Fact: physical activity has been proven to be as successful as some antidepressants in treating mild forms of depression.4 According to Beyond Blue, in any one year around a million Australian adults have depression, and over two million have anxiety.5 The good news is that depression can be treated many ways, including by psychological counselling, medication and exercise. One study tested exercise against Zoloft in treating depression, and found that either, or a combination of both, were equally effective in reducing symptoms. And the benefits continued for those who kept up their physical activity after the study finished.6 The major advantage of exercise over medication is that there are no nasty side effects. Being physically active also helps regulate the systems affected by depression, improving sleep, boosting your mood and increasing your energy levels. (As with all mental health issues, though, please consult a medical professional before changing your treatment.) Physical activity improves relationships Fact: research has demonstrated a relationship between exercise and social cohesion.7 Over the years I’ve developed friendships through my fitness activities. I have an eclectic mix of ‘fitness mates’ with whom I do weights and swim; yoga; run and play tennis; paddle; kick the footy; cycle; go dragon-boat racing; and snow-skiing. Through all these fitness activities I have sustained old friendships and grown new bonds.

TAKING A
OUT FOR 2020 Holly Barrter explains how to easily incorporate plant-based meals into your life (and why you might consider it this year) f you’ve browsed the aisles of any major store recently, you’ll have spotted the growing selection of plant-based options and meat alternatives on offer. From high-protein pieces of ‘chicken’ constructed from peas, coconut yogurt or the extensive soy and nut milk choices, there’s never been a better time to dip your toe into plant-based eating. As 2020 rolls in, many of us will be reviewing our diets and keen to adopt healthy habits. Switching some of your meat, eggs and dairy for a plant-based meal not only benefits your health but the planet’s, and it doesn’t mean living off salad alone! Here's a few expert tips for navigating a plantbased menu, whether it’s for a Meatless Monday or a few veggie-focused weekends. Make it easy If you’re new to the plant-based scene, don’t over complicate meals by trying to create vegetarian proteins from scratch. Lean on the wonderful frozen or chilled options available and focus your dish around these as a base: think chickpea pasta with vegetarian meatballs, or wholemeal falafel wraps with hummus and plenty of salad.
Better yet, you’ll find that cooking plantbased pre-made options is a breeze! It’s more a matter of warming or pan-frying to your level of preferred crisp and finish, and you’ll find your time over the stove or oven is cut significantly. If you are craving one of your favourite snacks (biscuit, chocolate or something salty), check out a plant-based alternative instead — there’s a vegan version of almost everything you already enjoy. Don’t forget your protein If you’re accustomed to animal proteins, you’ll find your level of satiety will change when eating a plant-based dish, so it’s essential to keep some protein-rich inclusions in every meal to stop you reaching for the snacks later in the day or night. Thankfully, plant-based food manufacturers understand that vegans and vegetarians want to include higher-protein options too, so check the nutrition breakdown on your purchases, and if all else fails, add a side dish of chickpeas with your salad, or mix kidney beans and lentils into a stew, curry or veggie chilli. Dried fava beans are an easy office snack if you need a plant-based power boost on the go (nuts are a good option but beware of the
calorie content with so much fat, so keep it to a handful). Keep it fresh The magic of eating plant based is the boost of fibre, cholesterol-free ingredients and all the vitamins and minerals in fresh fruits and vegetables. The old ‘5 a day’ rule is on track, and if you can incorporate raw ingredients into your routine alongside your pre-prepared snacks and mains, you’ll really feel the benefits. Celery and carrots with hummus, an apple with peanut butter or a light green smoothie with apple, kale and lemon sipped on throughout the day are top ways to up your veggie intake in a simple way. This tip is especially important for those looking to shed festive-season weight. Avoid adding too much oil, dressings, spreads or sauce to your dishes and lean on fruit and veg in its natural form as your side dishes and snacks. If you want to make a dietary change but want to know more about the vitamins and nutrients needed for a balanced diet, don’t be shy to ask for advice from your local healthcare professional who can point you in the right direction.

2020 d beyond
an
To help us start 2020 off the right way, Les McGuire ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial, teaches us how we can keep our finances healthy, and stay motivated to achieve our financial goals
hen was the last time you set yourself some ambitious targets as another new year comes around? We all want to lose weight, drink less, go to the gym and, god forbid, save more money. Well, I can’t help with the first three (I am a shocker at following those goals myself). When it comes to saving money, however, I can help you consider some effective, robust money saving strategies to prepare for the year ahead. We all have our personal goals which mean something to us. Some of us like holidays, investing, partying, a new car, a nice home, to name a few. Taking ownership of what you would like to achieve, and planning sensibly to achieve each goal, is so important to set yourself up for success. The important thing to remember is don’t lose sight of the most important thing, which is you and your family. I find that many couples don’t take the time to appreciate each other and invest in their relationship. Set aside some money for those infamous date nights and spice up your relationship, as happiness is worth far more than any money can buy. I know this sounds quirky, but spend the time getting to know each other again. An enjoyable way of exploring this is by writing down some personal questions about your favourite things, then give it to your partner and ask them to answer the questions. Test each other and see how you score; as humans things change and falling in love again can be exciting. Well, now we have taken the time to invest in ourselves, let’s consider some other ideas to achieve those money goals. Many people, I see, have a home loan and multiple savings accounts to cover everything from bills and holidays, to birthdays and Christmases. Having multiple accounts is such an inefficient use of money, though some simple changes can make a huge difference. Your home loan can be your best friend if it has a 100 per cent offset account. An offset account used correctly can save you significant interest off your loan without creating any taxation issues on the interest you earn. For those incidental expenses, have one savings account with January 2019
“Taking ownership of what you would like to achieve, and planning sensibly to achieve each goal, is so important to set yourself up for success.” minimal money to play with, place the rest of the money in the offset account. To keep things simple, have a sheet to track your expenses related to the existing accounts you had for bills, holidays, birthdays and Christmases. Every week allocate some money towards each of these goals. If you are computer savvy, an excel sheet could be an easier option. The power behind this is non-deductible interest reduction on your loan, with no tax implications and access to the money when you need it. With the average home loan around 3.5 per cent, this will mean you are earning this return on your money. Even without a home loan, there is still a robust strategy to save towards that special goal. A sure-fire way is to set up a small investment portfolio, of shares or managed funds. By contributing money to the investment each week, the money will compound and grow. Contributing money this way is called dollarcost averaging. Making small contributions into the right investments can build towards a savings goal much quicker than simply having money in the bank. If your goal is to buy a car, don’t go straight from the showroom into the finance office. There are often better deals by shopping around and seeing what’s available. If you have available equity in your home, this may be a good solution to purchase the car with lower ongoing costs. The most important thing to remember is to set yourself a maximum five-year period to pay off the car to make your money work best. If you want to save for that special holiday, be brave and be ready to go at short notice. Last-minute bookings achieve some of the best holiday deals. I often find last-minute cruise deals are a fraction of the price. A cruise can be so much fun, try a last-minute three-day cruise to get the taste for what this kind of travel offers. Cruising is the most rebooked travel in the world. As always, keep smiling and if you have any questions send them to les@futureproof.com.au. 46
Mind over matter As we tackle new challenges and take on new goals in 2020, Bruce Harkness shows us the way by putting mind over matter
o build a successful and rewarding career is one of life’s great opportunities. It is made up of not one but many decisions over your career lifetime. It is what you decide to do next that will make all the difference. So, what will your next choice be? Regardless of what you decide today, it is important to keep making decisions that will move you one step closer to your goal or career vision. When all is said and done, you are responsible for the choices you make and ultimately the mindset you choose to adopt. Maintaining a sustained high level of performance in today’s workplace is an ongoing challenge, as expectations are high and the pressure to exceed performance targets is even higher. High performers in the workplace focus on the development of a positive mindset as a priority. A positive or negative state of mind is ultimately derived from the choices you make each day and how you respond to challenges in your life. Whenever a high performer experiences a setback, they quickly move from a negative mindset to a positive, solutions-focused mindset. This primarily involves asking themselves what they can learn from a situation in order to do better, or to avoid a similar setback in the future.
"Those who respond positively and demonstrate a willingness to embrace all that comes will thrive as opposed to merely survive." They display high levels of resilience and the ability to bounce back to a positive mindset, and move towards their goals once again. Most importantly, they understand innately that they are far more likely to achieve their goals with a positive point of view about the challenges they face. Given that you will be working for at least half of your natural life, it is critical that you derive enjoyment from the work you do, and this is largely dependent upon your mindset and how you perceive your work. From the moment you enter the workplace you are challenged by influences, such as changing technology, financial targets, customer expectations and dare I say it, office politics! Those who respond positively and demonstrate a willingness to embrace all that comes will thrive as opposed to merely survive. Pressure within the workplace can indeed have a positive and negative impact, depending on the culture and

leadership of the company. The mindset you adopt will make all the difference to not only how you feel about your work but also how you respond to the pressure. Those that view life and their work in terms of ‘the glass half full’ will be in a much better place in terms of their overall satisfaction with their work and long-term career. With this in mind, apply these simple rules to protect your mindset: l Take control and ownership of your attitude. l View a challenge as an opportunity. l Embrace failure as an opportunity to learn. l Stop seeking approval from others. l Give yourself the opportunity for reflection away from the workplace and technology. l Set clear and measurable goals and track your progress towards them.

Capricorn December 22 – January 20
A new year and decade opens with an unusual emphasis of planets in Capricorn, activating your image, vitality and ability to be seen (Mars accelerates this in February). The Mars retrograde adds pressure or potential challenges to family, housing, real estate, late 2020. Relationships become more straight-forward when the nodes leave the house of partnerships in May, with newly established and authentic baselines.
Aquarius January 21 – February 19
2020 begins in your private spheres, untying knots and freeing yourself from self-limiting beliefs. Venus is retrograding May and June. Expect some re-evaluations around your relationships to your creativity, children and groups. August and September are great months to mingle and find harmonious relationships. May and June are the beta tests, August and September are the positive results.
Pisces February 19 – March 20
Social groups and activities will require more time and commitment in 2020, with benefits being worthwhile. Mars retrograding late 2020 is irritating for your money and finances. Just be watchful of outgoings September – November. September and October are when personal relationships come back on side after May and June, with Venus in retrograde.
Aries March 20 – April 19
The pile up of planets in your career sector (January – March) sees strong formations of career goals. The North Node leaves your home sector in June, freeing up complications or dramas at home. A tricky Mars retrograde in your sign September – November must be watched. The times around this, though, you are packing more of a punch and seen as a person on the rise or a doer.
Taurus April 20 – May 21
Venus will be activating your money sectors from April to August. Venus loves beauty, and temptations are great, be cautious (especially in May and June). Mars is stirring up things in your private spheres, remember to avoid anger when confronted or frustrated. The year’s end brings opportunities for meetings and forging new partnerships.
Gemini May 21 – June 21
The nodes shifting from your money house in June relieves complications around money and income. This emphasis shifts to independence and individuation occurs as the Venus retrograde is in full swing, which also focuses on your autonomy. Mars retrograding in your friendship sector is the third hint that 2020 is about your place within relationships.
Cancer
June 21 – July 22
The nodes moving out of Cancer and Capricorn in June ends the entanglement around concepts of ‘who you are’. Mars spends six months activating your career; this slows with the retrograde, then picks up by year’s end. Jupiter opens the way for new relationships. A grounded and conservative approach will be the key and the results could be life changing.
Leo July 22 – August 23
Travel and higher learning will be activated for half of 2020. Any travel in the second half of the year may be frenetic and then frustratingly stagnant, then frantic again. Health and everyday routines are slow moving, but will get a boost with Jupiter, pushing its vision. Venus activating your social groups may show some re-evaluations May – June. It’s all about making alliances.
Virgo August 23 - September 22
2020 emphasizes career and finances. Mars spends six months triggering resources, loans, debts, external forms of money. Don’t feel hostile or inflamed by any potential issues. Your reaction will be half the management, and solution. Career wise, Venus shows you in good-steed and reputation. May and June, your reputation may slip, but this is part of the auto-correct process until July..
Libra September 22 – October 23
2020 sees Jupiter throw you support, in your home and family life, providing buoyancy and optimism. Mars may feel like a strange wrecking ball to your relationships, though; It’s only removing relationships that are no longer bearing fruit or lack authenticity. Reflection time is on offer, relationships are alive and engaging.
Scorpio October 23 – November 22
2020 sees lots of behind the scenes work highlighted. Mars will be the motivation to go out and get more physical in your daily routine — physical exercise is the best way to work with such an active energy in our health sector. Venus will shine bright, sorting out loans, taxes and resources from external sources. It will be a slow, but fruitful process.
Sagittarius November 22 – December 22
The 2020 planetary focus is on money, creativity and personal relationships.Your income and earnings are bolstered by a more austere and conservative approach, as your ruler works through a Capricorn lens.Your creative mojo or connection to children will be very active and energetic, with the potential for burn out in September – November. Venus will highlight personal relationships.
