LINKS RESTAURANT / BAR

NEW Summ Menu!er

from the editor ELIZABETH CAMPBELL

The new year is make or break time. You make new year resolutions (NYR) to eat better, drink less wine, do more exercise, be kinder to yourself, get that promotion you’ve been wanting for ages or new puppy (whatever the case may be). By February, the majority of us have fallen off our NYR bandwagon and are right back where we started only four weeks before. Don’t worry – it happens to us all. You probably can’t even remember what you vowed to do last year. That is why, I stopped doing them long ago.

LINKS RESTAURANT LINKS HOPE ISLAND

Instead I write a list of 52 goals I want to achieve in 52 weeks. They are not all health, fitness and finance related (these are the most popular resolutions, you know) … it could be as simple as buy myself flowers, take a yoga class or try that new restaurant down the road. I tick them off as I go and swap and move them around too – obviously, I don’t want to go swimming with dolphins in the middle of winter!

The casually elegant Links Restaurant & Bar in the clubhouse is the perfect location for you to relax and enjoy our menu. Boasting locally sourced fresh produce and meats and showcasing simple yet interesting flavours.

I’ve actually got my family on to it and they now do it too. It’s fun and it means I’m always active and trying new things - and if I don’t like it, I don’t have to do it again.

Combining classic, well tested dishes and modern interpretations and presentation, there is something to please all diners.

In this inspirational edition of the gorgeous Get it magazine we’ve got some really truly amazing stories like 14-year-old Jordyn Jessica Yarker who’s kicking off her career in acting and singing in the US and entrepreneur Corbin Parker who started a business in his lunch hour.

Open for breakfast and lunch daily and dinner on Friday evenings.

Mention this ad to receive a bottle of wine with the purchase of two main course meals.*

There’s also plenty of other motivational info so you can really get into the swing of the new year and those resolutions. I hope it helps get you off on the right foot. So here’s to a bright, successful, happy and healthy 2016. I know it’s going to be a cracker.

LOCAL PROFILE with Elizabeth Campbell

Follow your dreams This young Gold Coaster has hit the big time in Hollywood and she’s having a ball ctor and singer Jordyn Jessica Yarker takes some time out from around-the-clock recording to speak with Get it after landing the role of Asha on Nickelodeon’s popular No.1 rated TV show Bella and the Bulldogs. In 2013, the Yarker family packed their bags, gave their friends and family hugs, then headed to LA to pursue Jordyn’s acting and music career. It was only 18 months later, and after many tears and frustrations, that the commitment and belief won over entertainment industry professionals and young teenagers who now follow her journey through social media. Has acting and music always been part of your life? I remember singing in the car a lot and my parents noticed I had a voice and loved to use it. I was around nine when I really started singing and recording music, singing and writing for a pilot of a children’s TV show called Accord’n to Jordyn. Music has always been a huge part of my life and I have always had a big imagination. I love to perform live and have been fortunate over the past few years to tour with a band, opening NASCAR Iowa Speedway, The Pensacola Florida Annual Fair, Fallfest Pennsylvania, Michael Montgomery Festival (Winchester, Kentucky, Fayetteville). Right now I am working on my new sound and music for release this year. January 2016

I never did musicals in school though. It’s funny because my parents laugh about when I had to go on stage for preschool graduation. All I had to do was shake the teacher’s hand and accept the certificate, but instead I cried because I was so scared of the audience! What is your earliest memory of acting and singing? After we recognised that I loved music I started singing lessons and recording my own music at a very young age. I remember singing a cover of Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never and it’s quite funny to look back on now. I know there were also many silly family and friends makebelieve stage moments; not with just me, but also my older sister Erinn. We were a duo. I sang and she danced. What was it like moving to another country with your family to pursue your dream? It was very daunting and thrilling all at once. I left every single friend I ever had and all my relatives who have always been there for me. It can be very frustrating, lonely and sad. I am always striving and keeping busy doing something I love, but can also create opportunities for my future. That’s why I really love Skype … omgosh this has been the best for keeping connected as best I can - though the time-zone difference can be a bit of a problem. 10

Are you living your dream? My life right now, no lie, is amazing and anything but ordinary. It is surreal when I’m on set and sometimes I have to pinch myself to realise what I’m actually doing. I remember my visions of being on set; I was laughing, being goofy and having blooper moments because that’s what you see a lot of on TV when looking at the behind the scenes. That’s what’s great about Bella and the Bulldogs. Truthfully, getting my first role is just one part of it. I am still working towards achieving the rest of my dreams and aspirations. I will definitely need patience and perseverance, especially for my dream of having five dogs, three cats, two horses, a bunny, four birds, a goose and a goat. Space is precious in LA so that part will have to wait. What is the best part of about your life right now? I definitely think being on the show is incredible and it is always so fun being on the set of Bella. It takes a team to be amazing; I can’t do it on my own. My music is coming along now too, which is very cool, I’ve grown and so I want my music to grow and resemble who I am now, my stories and life moments. Also since coming to America, my family and I have grown closer and I’ve met so many incredible people and new friends. I love the journey that I’m on.

MONEY & LIFE HACKS

Money for nothing It’s a new year and you’ve made your resolutions. Did you know the most popular new-year resolutions are to do with health and finances? hile it’s not a new financial year, the start of a new year is perfect timing to take control of your finances. You can make your money work for you with these simple tactics as outlined by comparethemarket.com.au spokeswoman Abigail Koch. “The simplest things can save a huge amount of money over a year. Compare all of your providers – from energy, insurance, telcos and credit card companies – at least every 12 months to select the most cost-effective and appropriate plans to meet your individual needs,” she says. According to Abigail, these life hacks have the potential to save you thousands of dollars a year. Energy usage l Second fridge: Do you really need that second fridge in the garage keeping a couple of bottles of beer cool? Sell it and save on your energy bills. l Turn it up: the temperature on your reverse-cycle airconditioner by one degree to cut your electricity bill by about 10 per cent. l Make the most of energy discounts: Energy companies offer as much as 35 per cent off their energy usage costs in an attempt to win more business. Even if you have to pay early exit fees, it could be worth switching to save hundreds of dollars over the year. l Turn it off at the switch: Laptops, stereos, speakers, televisions and set-top boxes are the biggest contributors to your “standby power bill”. Turn off your stereo, games console, TV, printer, washing machine, pay TV or set-top box at the wall and save. l Turn your back on the dryer: Ditch your dryer and use the clothes line to dry your clothes. This alone could save you a few hundred dollars a year. Exercise caution l Trial offers: Circulate between gyms, yoga studios and classes by using their introductory offers. Many yoga studios have $50 of unlimited classes for one month, compared to membership of around $80/month. Try a few studios to find the one you like best. l Start a walking or running group: Exercise for free and receive motivation from your group. Then you won’t have to spend money on a gym membership. l Continuing a gym membership despite never going: “It seemed a good idea to waive that joining fee in exchange for an 18-month membership, but with six months to go, you’re not using it,” says Abigail. The solution is to sell your contract to a friend who can avoid joining fees and take up the remaining payments.

January 2016

Credit card tricks l Smart traveller: When abroad, always pay in the local currency when you’re offered the choice of Australian dollars or Euros, for example. If you choose Australian dollars – which most of us automatically do – then the little known Dynamic Currency Conversion fee will kick in costing you 5.5 per cent on top of your purchase. l Don’t use your card to pay your cab fare: PayPass is an easy way to pay that Saturday night cab fare, but a 10 per cent surcharge applies. Take cash for your taxi trip home. Note that some stores also have a tap-and-go charge – Aldi charges 0.5 per cent for this form of payment. Daily life hacks l Shop online but collect yourself: “Do your grocery shop online but collect from the store checkout free of charge and save up to $13 a pop,” Abigail says. “If you have to opt for delivery, try choosing an off-peak delivery time for a cheaper fee.” l Make the most of health insurance discounts: Keep your eyes peeled for health insurance funds that offer a discount if you pay by direct debit as some offer up to 4 per cent off your annual premiums. If you’re on a family policy paying an average $3500 a year, this saving can make a big difference. l Paying full price on date night: Sure, it’s fun to do something special with your partner every week. However, it’s easy to spend $100 on a night out. If you love midweek date nights, try sourcing a phone or energy supplier that offers rewards such as discounted cinema tickets.

hina was once known as the Celestial Empire or the Land of the Divine. For 5000 years, the Middle Kingdom was home to an unparalleled legacy of heroes, legends and virtues that still resonate in the present. But in recent decades, under campaigns like the Cultural Revolution, this rich heritage has been almost completely eradicated in China. Where can you find authentic Chinese arts and culture today? The answer is in Queensland when the world’s premier classical Chinese music and dance company, Shen Yun Performing Arts,

brings its 2016 show to Brisbane, Gold Coast and Toowoomba in February and March. Shen Yun is the first company to present classical Chinese dance to the world on a large scale. It also features the only orchestra to combine both Western and Chinese instruments as its permanent members. Shen Yun has taken the globe by storm, performing in more than 100 cities, across five continents. The show is a celebration of traditional Chinese culture as it was meant to be - a study in grace, wisdom and virtues distilled from millennia of civilisation. With mesmerising

choreography, colourful costumes, stunning animated backdrops and tremendous athleticism, Shen Yun takes the audience on a journey through time and space to ancient lands, mountain peaks and even heavenly paradises to the present day. Shen Yun will perform at the Lyric Theatre QPAC on February 26-28, Empire Theatre Toowoomba on March 2 and The Arts Centre Gold Coast on March 4-5. COVER FEATURE

with Justin Fankhauser

to a kick-butt mindset Your mind can make or break you as Justin Fankhauser discovered in his early 20s… here’s his story and how he turned his life around in seven steps have been living with depression for more than 20 years. I take medication daily to help me and it’s something that rears its ugly head from time to time, but I believe if managed correctly you can still have a remarkable life. This is something I wouldn’t have had the guts to say two years ago. Why? I thought people would think less of me. My friends and my staff, and the way people would look at my business, credibility and me as a person. This is the effect depression has on you when you live with it on a day-to-day basis. It alters your self-worth. When I was 19 my best mate committed suicide. It had a massive impact on my life. Looking back now, my best mate must have been suffering from some type of mental illness to do what he did. On that day he broke a lot of hearts, his family’s, his friends January 2016

and especially mine. Not a day passes that I don’t think about him and I would say to anyone who suffers from mental illness that this is not the answer. Back then, counselling for this type of thing wasn’t the done thing. You were left on your own to sort out your battles. Thankfully today things have changed and a lot of help is available for people dealing with tragic events or enduring their personal demons. I remember when my own fight began with depression. At 21, I travelled to the UK on a working holiday. I think in some way I was running away from my troubles. To say I wasn’t coping very well with my mate taking his own life was an understatement. I was feeling alone, angry and confused, but most of all very depressed. To be honest I believe I was on the verge of a full meltdown. I struggled to function; to get out of bed, eat, socialise or 16

go to work. I was crying a lot. I was a 21-yearold mess and I felt so low and helpless that I thought life wasn’t worth living. Having depression makes you want to be alone. It makes you push away your friends and your loved ones. It’s not because you want to, it’s because it makes you feel worthless. It doesn’t matter if everything around you is great. It drags you down. People say “Just get over it” but until you have experienced it, you can’t really understand … it’s not that easy, believe me. People with depression just want people to say,“Hey how are things going? Everything OK? I’m here if you need to chat or I’m here if you need me.” At the time of the first signs of my depression, my now wife helped me greatly and without her support I don’t think I would have made it. I was in a very dark place. It’s

Here are Justin’s seven steps to help turn your mindset around:

1 2

in 2016 hard when your mind is playing tricks on you and making you feel like there’s nothing to live for. I can remember going to the doctor with my problems. He quickly diagnosed me with depression and put me on medication. He arranged for me to go and see a counsellor to help me talk about and deal with my demons, and it really got me over the line. Throughout the past 20 years of my life I have been on some type of medication for my depression and I have seen a number of counsellors for the problems I suffer with. I’m passionate about bringing mental health issues out of the closet even more than they are today. We need to educate everybody, especially the young, to understand there is help available. I’m now 42, married, with two beautiful kids. I have a great business, I have great friends and a great life. I have days when I need to work harder to get up and go sometimes, but the future can be bright.

3 4 5 6 7

What you give out is what you get back I used to be one of those people who constantly moaned and looked at everybody else and thought that I had it bad and they had it good. Once I realised my attitude and mindset were causing 90 per cent of the dramas in my life, my life changed. Give out great things to the world and you’ll get back good things from the world. Be grateful for three things every day (morning and night) My sister taught me this. We often lose sight of what we have, like food, shelter, wife, kids, health, friends, work, your business, job and so on. Make a conscious effort to be mindful of this. I’m not just grateful for the good things but also the bad things too (strange as it sounds). You can learn so much from the mistakes you make or the bad things that happen. Give and you will receive My favourite saying from Zig Ziglar is: “You can have anything you want in this world as long as you help others get what they want”. Not only does it make you feel good, but also it comes back to you in so many ways. Strive to be positive It’s not always realistic to be positive all the time. Sometimes it takes effort. When something makes me upset, I take that negative thought and screw it up in my mind and throw it away. I fill that space with something that is positive, such as a picture of my kids and wife, a holiday I’ve been on, or a funny night I’ve had out with my mates. Focus on the now If you focus on the past or the future, you aren’t enjoying life and instead worrying about what you could’ve done or what problems may occur. Both of these things can’t be controlled and you’re just creating stress and anxiety. Seek positive influences Seeking positive influences or people in your life is paramount to creating a great mindset. Associating with the right positive people is one of them. Hanging around with negative people will only bring you down and not encourage you to improve your life. Share the love We often hear more from people who want to complain about things, not what a great job we’re doing. I like saying things like “hey you look great today” or “well done on winning that race” or “have you lost some weight?”. What you don’t know is that these responses can create more great feelings for you that can then enhance your own thoughts. Life is a never-ending lesson and I’m still learning, but these are the steps I follow on a day-to-day basis. 17

If you are struggling with mental health issues Here a few things Justin suggests you do straight away: 1. Don’t try to battle through depression on your own thinking you can beat it yourself because it’s bigger than you. 2. Go and see your doctor straight away and ask for help. 3. Don’t be afraid to talk to your partner or close friends and ask them for help. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength. 4. With the right help, you can begin to feel better and feel confident that you’re able to cope with your issues, and start living the life you deserve. 5. If something is bothering you or something has affected you in some way, don’t just dismiss those feelings. Ask your doctor to refer you to a counsellor for help. 6. Call mental health groups for help: Lifeline Australia 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue 1300 224 636.

Build a business in your lunch hour Gold Coaster Corbin Parker is a beard enthusiast, so much so that he’s turned his interest into a thriving business ccording to the statistics, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling all look better with this one thing – and women love it. Beards. Every second guy you pass in the street has one. The trend is huge; has been for years. There’s even new trends on the trend, with glitter and Christmas decorations for beards taking over social media during the festive season. According to Groomingmail.com, more than “80 per cent of women think men look more masculine with a beard, while more than two-thirds of those say they would prefer to date a bearded guy over a clean shaven man”. Meanwhile, the Huffington Post also reports a scientific study by the Official Journal of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society has shown facial hair can have a major impact on how we perceive men with beards. Here’s the low down: Men with heavy stubble are the most attractive; the healthiest looking men and those with the best parenting skills have full beards; and the more facial hair you have the more manly you are perceived to be. It’s certainly been the topic of much debate in recent times and while men all over the world were jumping on the beard-growing bandwagon, Gold Coaster Corbin Parker was tirelessly working away in his lunch hour on his beard-grooming business. “I haven’t always had a beard. I was in the army for a few years and they have a strict shave-everyday policy,” Corbin says. So once I had left the army, I loved not shaving. My beard started from there, but I definitely see myself sporting one for quite some time yet.” His own beard – plus the popular trend - was the motivator for Parker For Men – an organic and animal-cruelty-free product range for men with beards – but Corbin says women have made up a large percentage of his buyers. January 2016

Men with heavy stubble are the most attractive; the healthiest looking men and those with the best parenting skills have full beards “I think men are motivated by women and we have had many females order the products for their men so he can keep his beard in shape. If men don’t use products on their beard they can be rough and smell. I know myself, my fiance would remind me all the time that my beard was rough or smelt before I started the brand,” he says. The 25 year old is a dedicated beard enthusiast and entrepreneur, working on his business venture in his lunch hour, while also working full time at a health food company and studying. “I have built the brand on Instagram in my lunch breaks by posting pictures and interacting with people. It has been the success for me because it’s a free social platform that gives you worldwide views,”he says. In the one-hour time slot Corbin also phones potential retailers and send out samples of the products. “That’s how I’ve got most of my retailers,” he says. “I’ve had no professional advice, I’ve just brainstormed with my fiance and my Mum (his business partner) about ideas. Really, it’s just taken hard work to get it out there.” It’s what Corbin would encourage others to do if they were thinking about starting a business. “Just go for it if you have an idea or a dream. Even if you have inkling that you could make it happen - have a crack,” he says.“I’m also a big believer in using Instagram to build a business. I think it is key and every company should be harnessing it, plus it’s free.” 18

How to boost your sales this year If you are looking over your cash flow and sales figures as the new year begins ... you may be thinking “Is that all?”, writes Trevor Russell

hat if you could make 2016 a year to look back on when reviewing your figures and say, “OK, now this is more like it”. But what is the key that unlocks the door to higher sales and generates the cash flow you need in your business to pay for everything and still have money left over? Here are my eight top tips to supercharge your sales figures in 2016:

1 Sit with your team and plan and review at a set time what your ideal sales figures must be to achieve profit. 2 Make a decision on what your business priorities are: 1) Your team. 2) Your clients. 3) You. • TEAM: All your energy and resources are now going to be focused on praising, rewarding, training and supporting your team to succeed. • CLIENTS: Your approach with your team and then yourself is to provide the best possible service to your clients. • YOU: Then you get to receive the rewards of a happier more productive team, highly satisfied clients and now you can experience the joy of higher sales and profits.

3 Train yourself and your team on how to sell. You’re in the business of sales so do everything to master this skill to effectively communicate with your clients and skilfully enrol them into the value your products and services provide them so you can get the sale. 4 Think and talk only about all of the elements of your business you’re grateful for and review and discuss how you can provide consistently better service. Move away from any form of negative talk about the market, clients and the economy. You’re now too busy to waste time complaining. 5 Have a simple sales plan: Who you’re meeting, calling, following up and rebooking - and follow it daily. Learn how to do this with skill and confidence. 6

Have a simple marketing plan that has you clear on where you generate enquiries, leads and walk-ins, and how you have them motivated to buy from you consistently.

7 Learn to love your figures and manage your cash flow by knowing how much needs to come in and what’s going out. Know what you need to put away for tax and GST, and put it away and do not spend it. 19

8 Last but not least, take care of yourself. Plan your days, stop running around putting out fires just so you feel productive. Be clear on where your energy is going to achieve sales, eat well, get exercise and sleep. If you’re going to run a better and more productive business, you need to step up to be that type of person. The reality is, if you want to succeed in business, do what the majority don’t do. If you are willing to step up and do what it takes, the good news is it’s not that much harder and in many cases is actually easier and more enjoyable as you get peace of mind knowing everything is paid for and you have surplus sitting in the bank. Now that will be something to cheer about come December.

As much as we love putting an outfit together the most important thing is to keep cool. It all comes down to the fabrics you’re wearing. My best recommendation is linen. It’s a great lightweight material, that’s extremely breathable, and one Gold Coast designer Lisa Brown uses in her amazing designs. Another popular fabric is silk. This beautiful luxury material is an all-climate fabric as it has natural temperature-regulating properties. It therefore has the ability to cool and warm your body, making it extremely versatile to use all year round. It’s perfect for summer because it can absorb 30 per cent of its weight without feeling damp, plus it dries exceptionally fast. But dry cleaning is a must. The main colours for summer are magenta, blue and lime for block colours, while blue and pink are the main pastels…team with crisp white. Wearing pastels and tan together is a must do as it brings a feminine, yet down-to-earth, goddess feel to your summer clothing. Meanwhile, some of my must-have summer go-to items include cutout dresses, silk jumpsuits, kaftans, two-tone sandals, edgy bold gold accessories (keep these to a minimum though) and shoulder bags. HAIR AND MAKE UP with Amanda Higl oliday locks can be left washed out, dry and shabby, so the new year is a great time to give your tresses new life. But do you need a little inspiration? The best way to kick off a new year when it comes to your hair and makeup looks is with a little style research. So where do you start your style makeover? HAIR Pinterest The best place on earth for images and my personal favourite has to be Pinterest. If you don’t already have the app on your phone download it right now. For those of you who don’t know how to use it, you simply type in what you are looking for - for example, medium-length styles – and, boom, thousands of potential “new you” images arrive. You can then collect these images and make yourself an inspiration board, then off to the salon you go. Google Good old Google - what did we ever do without it? Gone are the days of flicking through the salon magazines, now you walk straight in with the world’s greatest collections on your phone. Google is also great if you are not quite sure what suits you. Simply type in your question – such as“what is the best hair colour for olive skin and green eyes” - and (hey presto) the answers await. If you are well researched and understand your own features and skin undertones, you will be savvy and know what will work for you before you arrive. It’s so much better than approaching

Why you need a

hair and makeup

inspiration board After the Christmas cheer is over, the decorations are all down and holidays are finished, you may feel like a little personal reinvention a change with no idea and it’s also a fool-proof way to make sure you love it. MAKEUP The same goes for your makeup. Now that your hair looks amazing it needs its partner-incrime to complement it. Do some runway and red-carpet stalking for an amazing combo to

glamorise your 2016 look. Oh, and don’t forget the extremities. Nails add a great finishing touch to any look and you will still be gorgeous and polished even in your pjs. Start 2016 feeling and looking summertime fresh! amandahiglhairandmakeup.com.au

Something to think about… new year, a new you. Sounds all too familiar, doesn’t it? We’ve checked off the first few days of 2016 and we are motivated and ready for a fitter, stronger body and healthier mindset for the New Year. The problem for the majority of us is that we always set out with the best intentions but once we come back to work, school and busy lifestyles, with the over-zealous effort you made in the first few weeks at bootcamp, things have finally caught up with you and your knees will barely cooperate with the rest of your body when you get out of bed in the morning. What if there was a way to help keep this momentum going but also keep you pain and injury free? No more creaking knees and lower back aches before you’ve even lifted your head off the pillow in the mornings. We may have found the answer. Sally Buratowski, a well-respected physiotherapist on the Gold Coast for over 20 years has put her years of experience and skill for physiotherapy, rehabilitation and clinical pilates into a new program Physiofusion. The program can be accessed by us mere mortals

through an online subscription, DVDs and USBs to use at our own leisure in the privacy of our homes, offices or anywhere you can really. Physiofusion is a unique new program which can be used to prevent and rehabilitate injuries, improve sports performance as well as rebalance, strengthen and tone the body in the comfort of your own home. More often than not, we find it difficult to maintain a rigorous new exercise plan due to underlying or existing injuries or weakness in common areas such as the lower back, shoulder, neck, knees and ankles. Physiofusion focuses on exercises to help you improve your posture, mobility, flexibility, stability, strength and endurance. The program covers each region of the body and each DVD is divided into chapters so that you can do the whole program or just one section a day if you are pushed for time. There is also one complete program focused on improving posture and core stability as your core muscles are the muscles that keep you sitting, standing and moving correctly and efficiently. How to get more out of your

property investments

ne of the many advantages of investing in residential property is that you can choose how involved you want to be in the investment. But the more proactive you decide to be, the better off your returns will be in the long run, says Tim Boyle, from Finalytics Financial. Tim, a chartered accountant, mortgage credit adviser and active property investor with more than 20 years’ experience, says many investors treat property as a completely passive investment and outsource the management of the investment and finances to property managers and trusted advisers. While others have a real passion for it and it almost becomes a hobby. “Once you have purchased the property there are three aspects to managing the success of the investment; the property, the tenants and the financials,” he says. Here’s a run-down on all three: The property Depending on the type and location of the property there are many things you can do to boost the capital value of the property, as well as the rent you receive in the meantime. This can, but need not, include extensive renovations. Often a new paint job in some of the rooms is enough to really improve the appeal of the property. “An example I saw recently was new carpet in the living area of a townhouse investment. The cost was $6000 and yet the rent increased by $80 a week. The carpets therefore paid for themselves within 18 months. There are so many examples of this and don’t forget the outdoor areas either. An appealing-looking property January 2016

If you’re willing to take a more active role in managing your property investment, there is a lot that can be done to give your returns a great boost from the street is a great first impression and it doesn’t cost much to plant some nice greenery and paint the front fence,”Tim says. The tenants Managing the tenants is the main ongoing task of owning an investment property. Most investors outsource this to a property manager who handle all the liaison, including finding and screening new tenants, negotiating the rent, looking after complaints, collecting the rent and ensuring the place is kept in good order. For this they charge a fee based on the rent amount, usually 5-8 per cent of the rent. “They will also charge for advertising and often other charges when a lease expires and new tenants are required. For these reasons several of my clients choose to do this themselves and therefore earn a higher effective return on their property,” he says. “Even if you employ a property manager you should not assume it is an appoint-and-forget arrangement. Of course, some managers will be better than others and unfortunately there are many who are lazy. A common example I see is that they do not do enough research into what rent your property could be achieving in the current market. They tend to focus on just having it occupied. I strongly recommend doing your own research of the area 1-2 times a year and especially when a lease is coming up for review. 30

“I had a client who after doing her own research, had the property manager increase the rent by $55 a week after they recommended the lease just be rolled over with the same tenants at the same amount. It turned out the existing tenants stayed on as they recognised what the market value in the area was.” The financials Many people just assume a mortgage is a 30-year term and that it’s a matter of paying it off over that time. The fact is, mortgages can easily be renegotiated and refinanced with the same lender or moved to a new one. Market conditions, product features and competition change so much. In addition to this, your own financial situation does as well. You should review your mortgage every six months. Better still, if you have a mortgage broker make sure they are doing it for you. So many things can affect the rate you are paying and these have large impacts on the financial performance of your property. “Recently I was able to save a client 1.3 per cent on a $525,000 mortgage just by getting the property revalued and negotiating with another lender. This saved her more than $6500 a year on her mortgage repayments,” he says. “Another simple tip is to get your ATO classification changed to include a property investor. This allows you to effectively deduct your negative gearing and other expenses during the year, rather than claim a refund when you file your tax return at the end of the year. It is simple to do and can really help with monthto-month cash flow. Speak to your accountant about this.”

Biggest

party place on Earth The food, people, attractions, beaches … Do yourself a favour and book a trip to Rio – you won’t regret it I O … Three letters and one small word. Rio. Those three letters are enough when placed together to invoke indelible images of one of the world’s most iconic, and yet controversial, cities. Rio de Janeiro, second largest city in Brazil and famous for its breathtaking landmarks, has an almost hedonistic beach culture and is known for the sensuous Samba. Flying into Rio has to be one of the most stunning and awesome arrivals anywhere in the world. No matter which side of the aircraft you are seated, the view is breathtaking. Legendary names such as Ipanema, Copacabana, Corcovado and Sugar Loaf loom large below as you look down over the sprawling mass of civilisation the locals call “The Marvellous City”. If you’re really lucky you’ll see the magnificent statue of Christ the Redeemer January 2016

32

looking down over the city and its millions of citizens. Rio is captivating. It pulses with life and activity. A mix of sexual liberation, vibrant dance culture and beach and health activities, Rio is the most liberal of South American cities. Catholic by religion but very much marching to the beat of its own drum, Rio is always alive, no more so than during carnival time (but more on that later). Firstly the history lesson. Founded in 1565 by the Portuguese, Rio has always been a major shipping port due to its vast harbour, protected largely from the fierce weather conditions of the Atlantic Ocean and also because of its value as a strategic fortification against invaders. It proved invaluable as the location to ship the many minerals mined in the interior

off to European ports and other overseas trading partners. Another unique historical point of interest is the little known fact that during the period when Portugal was occupied by Napoleon’s forces, the Royal Family moved to Rio and for a time, the city was the capital of Portugal. This makes Rio the only city outside of Europe to actually be a capital of a European country. There’s a travel trivia question for you. Rio is also about to enjoy another moment in the sun when she hosts the 2016 Olympics. There will be no better time than during this massive event to witness firsthand just how much the locals love to party. Speaking of parties … there is none bigger than the annual Street Festival known as “Carnaval”. Two weeks of nonstop party and street festivities make up this event known the world over for its flamboyant costumes, pulsing music and street demonstrations. The highly publicised event is centred naturally enough in the area known as Centro and the televised parade travels along a gigantic structure called the Sambrodome. The area is strangely quiet at all other times of the year and it is hard to

imagine the vast change that transforms this lifeless structure each year. The colours, the people, the noise and the overall joy of “Carnaval”. There is, however, more to the carnival than the Sambrodome. Throughout this vibrant city, hundreds of smaller samba blocks emerge with neighbourhood parades and parties lasting long into the night. At other times of the year, the phenomenon of samba can be experienced at venues such as Plataforma and Scala, but be aware these are very much developed for the tourist trade and not truly representative of the true Rio samba parties. For someone wanting to really explore this aspect of Rio culture, I suggest you seek out one of the many night practice sessions held by samba schools throughout Rio, particularly in the months leading up to “Carnaval”. Less tourists and a more localised experience if you can find one. So we should now take a look at some of the more famous and at times confrontational sights and locations that draw thousands of tourists every year to this fascinating city. Copacabana Beach: Arguably one of the world’s most iconic stretches of beach.

January 2016

The mists swirl about the statue providing glimpses of the world below as the sunshine breaks through and spreads its glow over the city. Spend 10 minutes or hours up here and the experience will be one to remember for the rest of your life A wide-arcing beach that is alive with activity. The esplanade is lined with mini bars and cafes; the beach itself is filled with beach volleyball and beach soccer activities. Families tend to escape from their confinements in the suburbs and spend the weekends on the beach and other beaches of Rio. On Sundays, the entire

January 2016

Esplanade is closed to traffic making it a wondrous experience to walk the length of Copacabana. Hotels and restaurants line the beach and for the more “touristy” traveller; this is where you should stay. Ipanema Beach: Trendier and more preferred by the locals, Ipanema Beach is a great location to explore the many

34

fashionable retail shops, more upmarket restaurants and just people watch as the locals go about their lives. Look after for the “dog walkers” which are extremely popular in these types of suburbs throughout Brazil and Argentina. Of course, you should also check out The Girl From Ipanema Cafe where legend recounts how the song was written and came to be a global hit. On my last visit, after much searching, I found the little cafe only to find it was closed for renovation. By now, however, it should be back in business for a hot coffee and a nostalgic visit for all. Corcovado Peak: No visit to Rio should miss the experience of taking the journey to the top of Corcovado Peak and stand below the inspirational statue of the Christ the Redeemer. If you’re lucky, you’ll get one of the world’s best views across the harbour and city sprawl of Rio de Janeiro. The mists swirl about the statue providing glimpses of the world below as the sunshine breaks through and spreads its glow over the city. Spend 10 minutes or hours up here and the experience will be one to remember for the rest of your life. It’s even possible, for the fitter traveller, to hike the trail from ground level to the peak and there is even an annual “Race to the Top” for the truly inspired. Sugar Loaf: Another of the“must do”tourist experiences is to take the cable car ride to the top of Sugar Loaf and earn yourself another of those famous Rio views. Be prepared for some delays as this is a very popular experience for both visitors and locals but the wait will be worth it. You should at least consider a visit to the “favelas” or slums of Rio. Sure it can be confrontational and if you are not careful with how you choose to visit it can even be dangerous. So only visit if you know the person

who is escorting you or take an approved and licenced tour operator. There are more than 700 “favelas” in Rio so you are never far away from these sprawling masses of humanity that seem to have crept up the sides of the mountains and hills that surround Rio … some have the best views in town. A unique experience, but you must be careful when visiting and always show respect to the locals. Finally carioas (locals) and gringos (tourists) alike have one thing in common when in Rio and that is a love of eating. The food craze that is currently sweeping the world (I even saw one in tiny San Angelo, Texas recently) is the Brazilian rodizio or “all you can eat” service with the most known and best version being the churrascaria, which is allyou-can-eat grilled meats. The defining aspect of the rodizio is that unlike the traditional

Baby mama If a baby is on the cards for 2016, you’ll love these top three tips to help prepare your body for pregnancy o you’ve made the decision to have a baby! Congratulations, but now what? Women can feel overwhelmed with the abundance of information available and it can be difficult to know where to start. Taking care of yourself and ensuring your health is in the best possible shape is a great first step if you’re looking to start a family. Making responsible choices and being healthy while trying to conceive is vital for you and your baby. “A healthy body is essential to make a healthy baby,” says naturopath and author Lisa Guy. “Although nothing takes away from the importance of a nutritious diet, taking a good quality multivitamin before and during pregnancy is an important way to ensure you and your baby are getting optimal levels of essential nutrients, like folic acid, iron and iodine, to support a healthy pregnancy and growing baby.” Here are Lisa’s tips for pre-conception and during your pregnancy: Visit your GP Visiting your GP or midwife for a preconception consultation and regular consults throughout your pregnancy is vital. Your GP will provide you with expert advice on planning your pregnancy and any health problems, concerns, lifestyle issues and supplement requirements throughout your pregnancy. Boost your system with supplements Although a well-balanced and healthy diet can generally provide all the vitamins and minerals we need, those needs become greater

in pregnancy, so it’s important to take an additional supplement. Pregnancy supplements, such as one like Fabfol, contain all the essential vitamins and minerals, and are known to help prevent congenital defects and malformations caused by nutritional deficiencies. Key vitamins

and minerals to be aware of when planning a pregnancy, or when pregnant, are folic acid, iron and zinc. • Folic acid: Essential for healthy foetal development and reducing the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. An October 2015 study found taking folic acid before conception significantly reduces the risk of small gestational age at birth. Small gestational age at birth has been linked later in life to chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and mental health problems. • Iron: Iron is necessary to restore energy and support the immune system. According to the Australian Medical Association up to onein-four Australian women are iron deficient. Insufficient iron stores can have a negative impact on women and their babies; possibly

leading to premature births, smaller and underdeveloped babies. • Zinc: Zinc works to support and strengthen the immune system, and is important for hormone balance and to boost fertility. Curb morning sickness The dreaded dash to the nearest bathroom can become a pregnant woman’s worst nightmare and for some can last all day. It is believed that up to 70 per cent of women will experience some form of morning sickness or nausea, especially during the first trimester. This can continue for weeks and even months throughout pregnancy causing the body to lose fluid and necessary electrolytes. Nausea can also lead to decreased food and fluid intake. “Sipping on an electrolyte drink like Hydralyte is a great way for expectant mums to help prevent dehydration and keep energy levels up during labour and when suffering from morning sickness,” Lisa says.

Mind-body accountability

in five steps

The way we measure success is skewed by the messages thrust at us daily via our phones, computers and mass media, says nutritional medicine practitioner Kathy Ashton

aving the trappings of success, that is, a demanding job or business, cars, nice homes, clothes, trips and the lifestyle – is wonderful but if you do not have your health and wellbeing, money in the bank means nothing. That’s the word from nutritional medicine practitioner Kathy Ashton, who shows people how to use food to heal. Her specialty is treating women with thyroid conditions. “While we pursue this version of success, many of us are left exhausted, burnt out, overwhelmed, and questioning if work-life balance is really just a theme from a fantasy novel. When we focus on pursuing success in one area of life – for example, work and business – families, relationships and health is often placed on the backburner until you get the wakeup call of thyroid disease, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases,” she says. “When our bodies are under constant pressure and not eating properly, our gut health suffers. The microbiome (gut health) is important for overall health and is impacted by stress and our frantic lifestyles.” To have it all – holistic success – Kathy says we need to work towards a five-step MBA, that’s mind body accountability. That looks like this: l Steps 1 and 2: MIND – leave it at the door l Steps 3 and 4: BODY – what you eat l Step 5: ACCOUNTABILITY – record wins, goals and gratitude Here are the five steps to help achieve your MBA. Leave it at the door Short fuse, premenstrual tension, loss of libido, no time for husband or self - does that sound familiar? When we feel under the pump with work deadlines, a mountain of projects and demands, coupled with trying to juggle family commitments, it can seem overwhelming. It’s hard to leave work and your worries at the door in the evening, but for your ongoing sanity, you have to. When you walk into the house, imagine you have a box you can leave the events of the day and pick it up later. Put all the devices that distract into the box so you can spend time with your loved ones and yourself. Set a time so you can focus on your family. I know there are many who will say this is not possible but even if it is an hour or two; you can always go back to work later. So between 6-8pm, this is your time to unwind, have

partner time, walk-the-dog time, yoga time, speak-to-your-mum time … whatever it needs to be to make you feel good, treat yourself with compassion and fill your emotional bucket. Sleep hygiene Most of our days are a whirlwind of activity, deadlines and staring at brightly lit screens. Little wonder we find it hard to get to sleep at night – our brains are go go go. A great way to set yourself up for a good night’s sleep is to set a bedtime. At 9pm or as soon as dinner is over, turn down the lights, put on some soft lamps or candles. The soft lighting helps elevate your melatonin – the chemical that helps us get ready for sleep. The latest research says using electronic devices right up to when we go to sleep is upsetting our sleep patterns and our love lives. The bright lights from our smart devices elevates cortisol levels, which make our brains active; not sleep inducing. If you do suffer insomnia, try having a banana before bed. Bananas are high in tryptophan – a feel-good amino acid. Plan ahead A girl’s best friend is a slow cooker and a rice cooker … and a timer to get it all under way without you being there. The beauty of a slow cooker is you can prepare enough food for lunch the next day. How would it feel to walk in the door knowing a yummy dinner was done and all you had to do was serve it up? Eat and drink well I’m not going to tell you what you can and can’t eat; you know what is not good for you. But you will benefit from increasing plant-based foods in your diet and drinking more water. Instead of grabbing a chocolate bar for energy, grab something that will give you sustained energy like a cold cooked potato and some salt. Be grateful As you snuggle up in bed, spend some time writing what you are grateful for in a journal. Expressing gratitude gives a sense of calm. A 2012 study published in Personality and Individual Differences showed people who express gratitude were overall physically healthy. Or you can have a victory folder, where you celebrate your wins. Or have a worries folder, where you can record the worry and put out to the universe for a solution overnight.

Too much of a good thing Jeff Osborne, from Vision Bundall, shares his tips on what to do the day after you have a blow out

After a blow out for some reason the next few days are when the weight starts to creep on. The best thing you can do for that is plan out a few days of eating really well. Plan and prepare the next few days After a blow out for some reason the next few days are when the weight starts to creep on. The best thing you can do for that is plan out a few days of eating really well. Get your exercise done and if you know there is a party coming up, do the smart thing and have a super healthy meal before you leave so you are full and feel less like eating the treats. If you really want to stay in great shape or even lose weight, you have to put some forethought into what you are going to be eating. Being mindful and organised are two of the most important tools for doing well over the silly season. P 5538 4788 or visionpt.com.au for more information. he hardest thing about this time of year is that it can be so difficult to say no - and sometimes saying no isn’t what you want to do. You want to have fun! So here are a few great tips for what you can do the day after a blow out of over eating, over drinking and generally making choices that normally lead to weight gain. NOTE: I am not condoning eating poorly all the time and then trying these tips. I’m saying if you find yourself in this position, there are some things you can do. If you try this too often, they aren’t going to work, because at some point you need to eat great food and exercise consistently to have the body that you want. First thing in the morning If you have had too many drinks and desserts, the chances are you are dehydrated. That can be why you weigh less on the scales after a few drinks. But beware, if your body is dehydrated it won’t be burning fat and you will likely be storing all the fat you ate last night. So drink some water, lots of it. The technical formula is 1 litre per 25kg of bodyweight + 1 litre per hour of exercise. Go for a long walk Not only will getting out in the sun make you feel better, but walking is going to be the best thing to stimulate our metabolism. You probably ate lots of carbs last night and you have to burn them off before they start converting into fat. So get out and do something, bike, walk, swim or tennis. Don’t eat any starchy carbs I know when you are hungover it feels better to eat carbs, but you can definitely go without. That means no bread, rice, pasta, potato, corn or sugar. On the day after, make sure you get lots of vegetables in, particularly the best ones for burning fat – asparagus, broccoli, rocket and spinach. 39

Reflect and create the life you want The Christmas holidays at the end of each year can be a good time to review the year and give energy to making changes and new habits to help make the new year an even better one By Dr Elen Apthomas, holistic nutritional doctor

he fast pace of modern life makes it challenging to remain happy, calm and healthy. It may be time to review your priorities and decide if your lifestyle needs to be tweaked with any changes needing to be made such as an improved exercise program, making more time for yourself and your family or look at bringing in more healthy food options or mini detox programs. Making time for yourself along the journey of life is crucial to being able to stay connected to your own needs. There is much truth to the saying that charity begins at home, but it also starts with being able to be kind to yourself. If you are emotionally and physically depleted then you have little to give to others. Exercise produces positive brain endorphins and is a great stress outlet.

Moderate exercise enhances energy and helps the body produce antioxidants that reduce the risk of inflammatory degenerative diseases. Health and happiness go together. It’s very hard to feel happy in a body that is acidic, toxic and tired. As 75 per cent of our happy brain chemical serotonin is made in our gut, nutritional medicine has found that giving the digestive system a spring clean with a detox program enhances our happiness levels. Maybe consider having mini detoxes throughout the year. This can be a gentler and more manageable option than doing longer time periods less often. The well-known 5:2 program lends itself to this style of life where five days a week are “normal” days and two days a week would be “clean” days focusing on

mostly liquid foods only to rest the digestive system. The liquids should preferably be nutrient-dense foods such as soups, vegetable juices, protein shakes or green smoothies. This is not only very beneficial to our physical body, but also gives a great lift to our mental wellbeing. It helps increase serotonin levels and reduces inflammation that can keep our energy levels higher and our mood happier. This makes it easier to stay on top of all life’s demands. Look out for yourself and use your timeoff this festive season to review your past year and give some energy to making changes and creating new habits to help make the new year the best it can be. Wishing you all the best for 2016. We hope it’s everything you wish for.

Success grown from frustration elcome to 2016 and our second column for Get It. One thing we neglected to do last time was introduce you to our clinic and how we came to be, the principles we operate under, and the services levels we aim for and expect in the hearing health industry. Clarity Hearing Solutions was born from a growing frustration of watching large multinational hearing aid companies buying out small independent clinics and then limiting the choice of technologies, assessments and caseload that clinicians could access. The constant sales drivers, rather than clinical approach driven in the industry jarred against my moral and ethical standards and so I set about creating a practice according to these standards and principles. My wife and I worked hard setting up the business, and we established clinics in regional and northern Queensland. My vision in the beginning was to have a small boutique clinic, just the two of us working together to provide the care and service that I felt was missing from the industry. My wife reminds me of this all the time, because before long the ‘bush telegraph’ was in overdrive and our reputation grew quickly. We found patients were travelling inland from larger cities to smaller regional towns to access our services – some travelled over 600 kilometres!

It didn’t take long for us to respond to the demand, expanding into Brisbane, Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Mackay, Rockhampton and other regional towns. We now have over 20 staff and 30 sites across Queensland. A few more than that original dream of a boutique clinic! We remain passionate about providing the same standard of care and service despite our growth. Providing the best solutions for our patients has always been our passion and one of the best is the Australian grown Cochlear Implant and other implantable technologies. These types of implants are excellently suited for severe hearing loss and Clarity Hearing Solutions are one of the fastest growing implant clinics in Australia. We are quickly becoming regarded as pioneers in the field of Adult Bimodal (use of a hearing aid and a Cochlear Implant) Audiology rehabilitation. Another non-surgical hearing aid implant, or extended wear device we focus on is called the Lyric. It is amazing 24/7 invisible wear technology, as close as you can get to normal hearing you can get. We are considered one of the leading Lyric clinics in Australia and I was lucky enough to be recognised as the Lyric Key Opinion Leader (KOL) for Australia for 2014-2015. Using these latest technologies and our decades of knowledge and experience

Grant Collins, Principal Audiologist, Clarity Hearing Solutions.

within Clarity we have solved the hearing problems of thousands of patients — a source of pride for both my wife and I. My role has changed from those early days and I now split my time across all clinics assisting and overseeing other audiologists in our team. Providing quality hearing, tinnitus and balance health services has always been the aim, and still is, of Clarity Hearing Solutions. I invite you to make an appointment with our clinic at Hope Island to see if we can assist you with your hearing needs.

Severe hearing loss?

There is a solution! Cochlear and bone implants with little or no out of pocket expenses. A Cochlear or bone anchored implant can cost between $10,000 and $30,000, but at Clarity we are able to structure a combination of private health insurance and Medicare to fully cover this amount.

CHICKEN BREAST WITH APRICOT AND GREEN PEPPERCORN STUFFING

LAYERED PASSIONFRUIT ICECREAM AND MACADAMIA NUT MERINGUE INGREDIENTS • 100g roasted macadamias • 120g free-range egg whites • Pinch of salt • 225g castor sugar • 1½ tsp corn flour • 1 tsp verjuice • 500ml tub Maggie Beer Passionfruit Ice Cream METHOD: Preheat fan-forced oven to 140C. Place the roasted macadamia nuts into a food processor and pulse until it resembles course crumbs. Set aside. Place the egg whites and salt in a cake mixer, whisk on high speed and slowly add the sugar one bit at a time in a steady stream until the egg whites are stiff. This should take about three minutes. When the mix is shiny, silky smooth and stiff, add the roasted macadamia nuts, corn flour and verjuice. Continue to whisk for 30 seconds, then stop. Line a baking tray (34x25cm) with baking paper. Spread the meringue on to the tray until it is 2cm thick. Place in the oven and cook for 35 minutes, then remove from the oven and gently place on to a cooling rack. Once the meringue has cooled, trim the ends and divide the slab into three pieces, each 11x25cm in size. Spread 250ml of passionfruit ice cream on top of one of the pieces of meringue then place another piece on top of this and layer with the remaining 250ml of passionfruit ice cream. Finally, place the last piece of meringue on top. Using a kitchen blow torch, lightly brown the top layer and place back into the freezer until ready to serve. You may wish to garnish the meringue with extra whole roasted macadamias. 43

INGREDIENTS • 8 large dried apricots rehydrated and chopped • 1/2 cup verjuice for rehydrating • 125g unsalted butter at room temperature • 2 tsp drained green peppercorns • 2 tsp chopped fresh lemon thyme • 2 tsp chopped flat-leaf parsley • 4 chicken breasts with skin on • Extra virgin olive oil for frying • Salt flakes to taste • 1/4 cup chicken stock METHOD: Preheat the oven to 180C. Rehydrate the apricots in the verjuice by placing the liquid and apricots in a pot and simmering gently until they have plumped up. Remove from the stove and allow to cool slightly. Strain apricots (reserving the verjuice) and roughly chop. Mix the butter, apricots, peppercorns, lemon thyme and parsley together in a bowl by hand as this prevents the ingredients from breaking up too much. Divide the butter mixture into four and push gently under the skin of each breast using your hands. Finish by running your hand over the skin to create a smooth surface. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Season each breast with sea salt and sear each breast in the pan, skin side down first, and then turn over until golden on both sides. Transfer breasts into a shallow-sided baking tray and place into the oven for 10-12 minutes or until cooked through (cooking time depends on the size of the breast). Remove breasts from the oven and immediately after pour over the reserved verjuice and chicken stock. Allow to rest for 10 minutes, loosely covered with foil. Serve chicken breasts with juices from the baking tray.

Cabin fever Welcome to The Cabin Store…Coolangatta’s latest offering to help you turn your home into an island getaway so you’ll always feel inspired. Owner Brenden Huntly talks to Get it

Tell us about the new store and what’s on offer? This coastal-inspired space will bring you up close with everything you need to transform your home into an island escape; offering ethically sourced furniture, home decorator and lifestyle products, with fashion and accessories for men and women, home fragrance and a great collection of inspirational books. It’s an exciting collaboration of unique brands and labels mixed with our own independent range of products. What sets this store apart from others? The Cabin Store is morally built on an ethos to inspire people by the people. A collective space that showcases quality and affordability in a comfortable environment. Seasonally the offerings will differ with products by local handmade makers, along with fashion brands such as Scotch & Soda – an upbeat relaxed label specialising in well-tailored quality textiles. What are some things you do differently? One thing is for sure; you will find honest and friendly service in all of our stores - and The Cabin Store is no exception. We genuinely connect with our customers on an equal level making them feel more at home than in a retail store. The Cabin Store has been specially designed to create an intimate and airy experience, free from distraction. Some of the world’s leading brands have been the inspiration for creating this space for everyone to enjoy. We are focused on people’s experiences and pride ourselves on sharing January 2016

memorable moments with our customers and our “Cabin Crew” alike. What makes The Cabin Store different to your other stores? If you are familiar with our other brands, including Village and Indiana, you will notice while being different concepts they also work hand in hand. The Cabin Store (which we refer to as our “brother store”) has a strong and focused identity. This store connects the coastal lifestyle with product and store ambience. It has a strong influence of “industrial coastal” style backed with the latest trends from Scotch & Soda fashion. One of our key focuses is on lighting; the store itself has a ceiling, which was specially designed to allow us the flexibility to showcase a unique range of pendants. Like a well-managed ship, The Cabin Store has a simple layout making it easy to browse and navigate our range of products; all while being situated close to the beautiful beaches of Coolangatta. How long have you been in the industry? The company first began a little over six years ago now, with Village opening the doors of its first store based in Bundall in late 2009. With just three people the company has now grown to a team of 20. “I’ve been in the industry myself from my teenage years having the opportunity to work alongside some great mentors,” Brenden says. Collectively, our team has an extensive range of knowledge and skill for the industry, which is some of the great reasoning behind our success. 44

What do you love about the store? The simplicity and flexibility of the new store space is exciting. Located directly on the street front of Griffith Street in Coolangatta connects us with the local community and visitors of the southern end of the Gold Coast that on its own is really special. We’re positively encouraged to work with the local community here and proudly pioneer a future together with other businesses in town. Why should people visit? If coastal and tropical gets your heart pounding, then there’s every reason to visit The Cabin Store. Round up the family or get together with some friends for a shopping experience on the Gold Coast. Why not even make a day of it and visit the breathtaking beaches of Coolangatta and get amongst the energetic rising that the suburb has to offer with a bounty of great new cafes, restaurants and stores opening in the neighbourhood. For more information about our latest journey, connect with us on Instagram @thecabinstores or call 5506 5300.

GET YOUR STARS

with Patrick Arundell

Get your horoscope H Capricorn December 22 – January 20 As the new year begins you will be urged to tap into past experiences and skills. You may find that some of your initial hopes are blocked, but by the end of the month you will show people how determined and resourceful you can be.

H Aquarius January 21 – February 19 You will have a desire to complete any unfinished business. Some of this can relate to outstanding psychological issues and it could be a powerful month. You will have added seriousness and power when it comes to expressing how you feel and the sincere support of those closest to you can prove absolutely crucial. H Pisces February 19 – March 20 You will be feeling a lot of extra passion this month, especially if you are a creative person and want to expand or reach a wider audience. However, self doubts could also surface early in January, and one close involvement cannot be taken for granted. Fortunately, even if you do initially feel you are going over old ground you will start to feel a lot more optimistic as the month ends. H Aries March 20 – April 19 The new year will begin with passionate desire for you, Aries. Even so, an initial new year’s ambition may take a little longer to shape up. If you are looking to enhance your social life, January 23 is perfect for opening up new possibilities.

January 2016

H Taurus April 20 – May 21 You’ll drive into 2016 with a great determination to open up your world. Indeed, an opportunity you’ve long hoped for can emerge, although you may be wise to thoroughly investigate before you finally say yes. Relationships can deepen and the intensity ramp up with emotions becoming more passionate. The limelight also beckons you this month but there may be some stops and starts along the way. H Gemini May 21 – June 21 You can be in great form as 2016 kicks off and your love life looks promising. However, there is potential for misunderstandings too. This month could see you reviewing a key partnership or financial arrangement but you will emerge stronger from this. An illuminating idea might seem too good to miss toward the end of the month. H Cancer June 21 – July 22 Leisure activities, crafts and even sports can be a great way to channel intense emotions. January 18 can entice you into a creative scheme or friendship. However, do watch a desire to splurge around January 23 as it might not bring much lasting pleasure. H LEO July 22 – August 23 You can be motivated to clarify the routines that support your life organisation and enhance vitality and wellbeing. It doesn’t need to be a drudge, so get together with a friend and urge each other on to do better. Although this may be trial and error at first, you’ll eventually find what works and what doesn’t. Relationships will also need care this month so don’t be too harsh on someone close.

H Virgo August 23 - September 22 Feeling comfortable in your home is going to be something you aspire to this month and you can bring real creativity to the process. Some Virgos may look to work from home. Any talent you have that you are passionate about can come very much to the fore especially in the last two weeks of January. Look to underpromise and over-deliver. H Libra September 22 – October 23 You will be encouraged to get personal communications with those closest to you on to a more solid footing. This doesn’t mean that everything will go exactly to plan so if you feel frustrated at any time, fall back on your natural talent for diplomacy. You may find yourself being very mindful of someone less fortunate this month. Good for you if so. H Scorpio October 23 – November 22 From January 3 your vitality and willpower are hugely boosted. Nervous tension can still be high in the first three months of this year though, so do look to take the time to develop any personal interests. An old friend can come back into your world and you can be extremely passionate about your ideas in the second half of the month but just remember that others are entitled to their views too, Scorpio. H Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 22 Some of your biggest ambitions may need extra time to come to fruition this month. However, your charm power will be at a max and this can see you enjoying the attentions of more than one admirer. Money will need care this month and someone may be slow to honour a payment. You may need to be persistent. If you need extra finance, a family member could be hugely generous.

Sexytexts Everything you will ever need to know about sexting

What is it? Sexting involves sending suggestive text messages, photos or videos to an intimate partner. While it is often associated with teenagers and young adults, sexting can be a great tool for livening up a long-term relationship or marriage. Who said sexting was just for teenagers? Not us! How do I do it? There aren’t any rules with sexting, just do what feels good and make sure you trust the recipient. Sexting is an intimate practice and there must be mutual respect between partners. The first time can often be daunting so we decided to give you some of our best ideas. It’s important to start off light and flirty and build into steamier messages, especially when you’re just learning. Here are a few of our favourite prompts for beginners: l What do you want me to wear later tonight? l Why can’t I stop thinking about you? l I want to kiss you so bad. l Want to play tonight? l I was thinking about you in the shower today. l I have a sexy surprise for you. Now see where it takes you! Your partner might be hesitant and you’ll have to go slow, or the messages may escalate and it will get far steamer than you expected.

Where can I sext? Sexting can be done when you’re in the office, running errands or out to dinner with some girlfriends. If you’re living together then you can even message each other from different rooms of the house.

3 rules of sexting 1. Start slow and work your way into it. 2. Never do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. 3 Ensure there is mutual respect and trust between you and your partner.

LAST WORD

with Sophie Wood

How do

you

want to feel?

Feelings aren’t something we normally associate with goal setting but that’s all about to change

he new year is finally here and it’s time to set some goals. Lose 5kg. Quit smoking. Learn a new language. Do these sound familiar? We all have such high expectations for ourselves. Then the “busyness” begins. We get caught up in routines and forget all about our resolutions. Our good intentions fall to the wayside and if we actually manage to achieve our goals, there is no time for celebration. We must keep going. So not only are we setting goals that we can’t achieve, but when we do achieve them we’re forgetting to congratulate ourselves. So what if instead of setting goals or outcomes for ourselves, we focused on how we wanted to feel? This is the philosophy behind The Desire Map: A Guide to Creating Goals with Soul. Created by popular writer and entrepreneur Danielle LaPorte, 40,000 copies of the book were shipped in the first month of launching. The popular Facebook Group has more than 25,000 members and a Desire Map workshop happens every weekend somewhere in the world. According to Danielle, you don’t chase the goal but the feeling you hope attaining January 2016

After implementing core desired feelings into your life, you will find that decisions are a lot easier to make and that you’re achieving your goals more rapidly the goal will give you. First, you get clear on how you actually want to feel and then you design your goals in sync with those feelings. This process is called The Desire Map and the feeling words that you pick are called core desired feelings. Joyous. Loved. Purposeful. These are just a few of the words that I identified through The Desire Map process. The book has a masterful way of getting you to dig deeper through a series of varied questions. How do you want to feel at the end of the day? How do you want to feel when you walk into your home? How do you want to feel when you’ve achieved your goals? Once you have those feelings, it’s just a matter of implementing them into your life. Core desired feelings can be used in both big and small ways. Perhaps the word 50

joyous will lead you to plan an overseas holiday or maybe it means you’ll take an extra-long break today. There is no right or wrong. All you need to ask is – what will bring me more joy today? After implementing core desired feelings into your life, you will find that decisions are a lot easier to make and that you’re achieving your goals more rapidly. You’ll even be able to say “no” to opportunities that don’t entirely light you up. So when you’re writing your new-year resolutions, bucket lists and to-do lists for 2016, thinking you are going to feel amazing once they’re achieved, remember to check back with your core desired feelings and make sure your goals truly reflect your desires. Here’s to a feel-good year!
