A very happy 2018 from the Get it team! To be honest, I have felt a little uninspired going into the New Year. With no real resolutions except to clean out the garage, it just felt like it was going to be another year. So I decided to check with Google as to what would make 2018 different from the rest. I first discovered that 2018 is the Year of the Dog on the Chinese zodiac. Now, unless the year of the dog means my dog, Eddy, will be better behaved, shed less hair for me to vacuum up constantly and take his bark volume down by 10 notches, this really doesn’t mean anything for me. I then read that 2018 is the year of ‘brave’ bathrooms. While they were referring to colours and elements, the only way bravery in the bathroom would help my life is if I could look closer in the mirror without seeing another little wrinkle or the occasional spot. Wishful thinking! So I try to move onto a more fun 2018 trend, fashion. I discover that apparently check print, khaki trousers and buckle shoes are all going to soar in 2018. I feel a bit thankful that I already have all of those items in my wardrobe (not telling you how long I’ve had some of those for!), but I am ready to be on trend as soon as they are. Some good news finally! Apparently 2018 is also going to be the year of intermittent fasting. Also good news for me because I’m great at it. Even though my fasting is less intentional more too-busy-to-finda-damn-thing-to-eat, I am ready for the trend and the ‘health’ benefits it promises. So long as you’re still allowed a glass of wine while fasting… have to keep hydrated somehow, right? Google hasn’t inspired me all that much so instead, I look at the 2017 issues of Get it magazine and all of the incredible Gold Coast women who shared their stores of survival, success and bravery against the odds. Now that’s inspiring! So perhaps 2018 can be the year of us women… where we are unstoppable in achieving, in overcoming and in thriving, no matter what the year brings!

GET TO THE POINT

Everything in moderation? with Anna Davies hoever coined the phrase ‘everything in moderation’ had obviously no idea that, decades later, someone as grotesquely hedonistic as myself would come into existence. I rode through the last few months of 2017 on a tidal wave of Uber Eats, red wine and watching Netflix to the point where it (quite rudely) asks if I’m ‘still there’. Yes, Netflix, I am still alive — I know you think it’s not humanly possible to watch conspiracy theory documentaries for four hours straight but they said the same thing about the moon landing, and now I am at least 80% sure that happened. I digress, but the point is, I can’t seem to get a handle on this thing called ‘moderation’ at the minute. And even as I inevitably try to do the whole ‘New Year, new me’ thing, I somehow manage to apply the same stupid logic as last year. If it’s anything like 2017 the month of January is going to look like this… Week 1: It’s basically still Christmas at the moment, and you are definitely still hungover from New Years. Take it easy, girlfriend. Your annual Christmas leave is slipping away before your eyes, but that’s OK, just build yourself a Netflix nest, whack on the air con and ignore the world for these precious final moments of peace. Week 2: Well, sh*t. Your holiday is well and truly over, your pencil skirt doesn’t zip up and the only thing in your fridge is half eaten Uber Eats and some turkey disturbingly past its prime. Better just go to work and survive off overpriced coffee and croissants from the cafe next door. How very French of you. It’s called culture, Mum.

Everyday fashion to suit your lifestyle!

I can’t seem to get a handle on this thing called ‘moderation’ at the minute. And even as I inevitably try to do the whole ‘New Year, new me’ thing, I somehow manage to apply the same stupid logic as last year.

Week 3: Right. That’s it. No more filth. You are meal prepping for the entire week ahead. Seeing as you cook for two, that’s a cool 42 meals. No big deal, just feverishly knock that out in your tiny shoebox-sized kitchen. Yep. Health. Vitality. Cutting your finger open while chopping kale. You’ll even go to the gym again, hell, why not back-to-back spin classes? That won’t have any negative repercussions. Can’t see any issues with that after weeks of vegetation. Week 4: Four spin classes in four days may melt the fat off your thighs, but I’m pretty sure that’s by virtue of the fact that it literally destroys your legs. They have been obliterated. Rest in peace. Seeing as you can’t move, you may as well assume position in your Netflix cave, order some Uber Eats and try to bribe the delivery driver to deliver directly to your sofa. You are right back to where you started in week one, you bloody lunatic. We will try the moderation thing next time, right? 9

THE NEW VACUUM SUPERPOWER

ou know what the worst part about vacuuming is? It’s not the energy it takes, it’s not how many times you have to nag the hubby to do it, and it’s not your dog’s constant barking at it because it thinks the vacuum is a rude intruder here to eat up your family. It’s when you are done vacuuming and have to empty the bag on your bagless cleaning device and find yourself in a dust storm inhaling all your family’s ickiest and yuckiest mess. Gross! Taking Australia by storm (and out of the dust storms), the Miele Blizzard CX1 is set to change bagless vacuuming forever. This new vacuum superpower achieves outstanding cleaning performance and delivers new standards in hygienic dust disposal. Miele’s first foray into the bagless floorcare segment, the Blizzard CX1 includes Vortex Technology, an exclusive Miele innovation, not only ensures quiet efficiency and powerful pick up, but also a stand-out dust separation system. With the Miele Blizzard CX1, only coarser dust particles find their way to the dust container, making emptying most efficient and hygienic, and the plume of dust, so common with other bagless vacuum cleaners, a thing of the past. No sneezing fits from the dust anymore! Finer dust particles and allergens are captured by a separate innovative filter container which only requires emptying, when prompted, once or twice a year. There is no direct physical contact with dust at any stage of the vacuuming process. The sleek black Miele Blizzard CX1 Comfort with its ergonomic handle is the top-of- the-range Blizzard, ideal for all vacuuming tasks. Even better, Miele is giving one of Get it’s readers the chance to win the $949.00 vacuum for themselves! Enter today. For more information on the vacuum or Miele visit miele.com.au

Loani Arman is a 38-year-old mum, actor, filmmaker and comedian who is tired of the way women look at themselves in the mirror, tearing themselves apart. Through the film Doco180, a partnership between WHIMN.com.au and Screen Australia, five female documentary filmmakers, including Loani, were tasked to get viewers to 'do a 180' on an issue affecting women in only 180 seconds. As subject of one of the films and the Creator, Producer and Co-Director, Loani stepped up and stepped out of her clothes to discover a more honest dialogue about her body in her film, My Body Says.

mentary here: You can watch the powerful docu Doco180 series here: facebook.com/mybodysays and the whimn.com.au/doco

Why was creating this documentary so important? One day my then two-year-old daughter was poking my belly when I called it ‘fat’. She said, “Not fat, Mummy. Beautiful.” She wasn’t ashamed of it like I was. I knew then that the negative dialogue about my body had to stop. Society is so good at teaching women to scrutinise and judge and devalue their bodies — we’re not considered complete or worthy or beautiful unless we can achieve the ideal of beauty that’s set by largely the media and fashion industry. I knew my daughter would have to face all of that at some point and I couldn’t contribute to that for her. What has the response been like? I was terrified at the idea of getting into my underwear and sharing intimate aspects of my life on camera, but it was that same fear that kept driving me to do it. That the film seems to be resonating January 2018

with women, and that it seems to be starting conversations about body image and self worth makes it all worth it. All the things that I thought would disconnect me from people in my life — my depression, my battles to appreciate my body, my self-doubt — are now the very things that are connecting me to people. It’s proven to me that sharing one’s truth and sharing vulnerability isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength.

realisation that I can only focus on so much in life. For me, right now, I’m focusing on my family, my mental wellbeing, and my career and that doesn’t leave much time for exercising away the extra weight I’m carrying. I’m happy with where my priorities are right now. I may one day decide to lose weight, but I won’t make that decision based solely on how I think a mother should look, and I’ll only make that choice when I have the space in my life to do so.

You mentioned that you suffered from depression and postnatal depression, what was that like?

It’s now January and this time marks a point where many scrutinise their bodies and pledge themselves to New Year’s weight loss resolutions. What did/ does this time of year mean for you?

I’ve grappled with depression for most of my life. It comes and goes and is usually ignited by circumstances — a break up, the loss of a loved one. So it was hardly surprising that I battled with postnatal depression. Being depressed at a time when I was also learning to be a mum felt insurmountable. I was exhausted from being up every hour breastfeeding a baby; was recovering from post-birth surgery; had hormones surging through my body; and hated my post-baby body. I had my second child 18 months after my first, and that’s when the postnatal depression was at its worst. I loved my kids so much that I forgot how to love myself. I thought they were perfect, and that I was imperfect. I thought my partner would be better off raising the kids alone. As I began working through all those issues with the help of health professionals, I realised that a lot of the negative dialogue I had around motherhood was related to how I looked. I hated the stretch marks, extra weight, and loose skin and felt that they were tell-tale signs that I was failing as a mother. That’s where doing a film like My Body Says really helped. I can now see that my body looks the way it does because my children exist. Their lives are literally documented in my flesh and skin. So now, when I see my baby belly, I see my kids, and that’s beautiful to me. Through the film, I also came to the

I used to make New Year’s Resolutions and they were always based on how I looked — I would vow to join a gym, lose 10 kilos, go on some fad diet, drop two dress, and so forth. I’ve since realised that I was just setting myself up to fail. As with most people’s New Year’s Resolutions, I was aiming sky high. My expectations were unrealistic. The moment I’d miss a gym session or fall off the diet-wagon, I’d beat myself up over it with lots of negative selftalk. You’ll never lose the weight. You’ll never be attractive enough to be loved. Why are you bothering to try? That’s not a great way to start a year! These days, instead of making resolutions, I just take stock of where I am in my life right now and think of ways I can afford to be a little kinder to myself. For our readers that want to try the ‘what my body says’ experience, can you tell them how to do it? To do what I did in My Body Says is really an exercise in looking at our bodies to find where our lives are documented in them. In the film, I worked through my entire body bit by bit to discover its purpose and a deeper meaning. That took a long time! But there are small ways every day where we can do just that — take a moment in front of a mirror to try and see past any 13

judgements you might make on your body. Use that moment to be kinder to yourself, and to celebrate your body as the machine that carries you through your life and lets you do the things you love doing. What are you working on right now and in the upcoming future? I just finished a season of Queensland Theatre’s production of Scenes from a Marriage at QPAC. Now I’m back to working on my podcast, Girlhood, which I’m developing with assistance from Screen QLD. The podcast is about puberty for girls, and I’m excited to be working with some incredible young people on that. This year, I also hope to keep working in documentary, and possibly look at expanding on My Body Says. I will also be working with PANDA as a Community Champion, which I’m really looking forward to, as well as continuing to be an Ambassador for the women’s rights focused charity, Share the Dignity. Anything last advice for our readers? Yes! Body positivity doesn’t have to be about loving yourself, no matter what, all the time. We all have bad days. I have days where I hate how I look, or feel fat, or ugly. But I’m learning that I don’t need to let those feelings define me. To me, that’s what body positivity truly is. Those judgements will still come, but I know they will pass. Learning a different and more honest dialogue about my body as I did in My Body Says will be a great tool in helping those feelings pass on.

GET IT I WORK LIFE PROFILE

WORK LIFE

I believe that every woman should have the opportunity to have a satisfying and rewarding birth experience.

A look into the life of HypnoBirthing Practitioner Kate Martyn

hen you hear HypnoBirthing what do you think? That you need to be a hippy? That a witch puts a hoo-haa spell over you to take away the pain? Not quite. Meet Kate Martyn, the owner of Coastal Birthing and Beyond. Residing in Burleigh Heads with her loving partner Nelson and their one-and-a-half-year-old son Tallow, Kate is a Registered Midwife, Registered Nurse, Qualified HypnoBirthing Practitioner and Antenatal Educator. She is also the Event Manager for their regular Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond Events. HOW I CAME TO OWN MY COMPANY… I believe that every woman should have the opportunity to have a satisfying and rewarding birth experience. Giving birth after all can be one of the most empowering experiences that will be remembered for the rest of your life. Unfortunately, today there is a tremendous amount of fear surrounding birth and an increasingly high rate of intervention. I wanted to provide couples with the opportunity to approach their birth with calmness, empowerment and informed choices. WHAT HYPNOBIRTHING IS… Hypnobirthing uses a holistic approach that focuses on the physical and psychological nature of birthing and is based on the philosophy that birthing is normal and natural. Our bodies are perfectly designed for birthing and during labour and birth we release a unique range of hormones that facilitate our birthing muscles to work in harmony to reduce or eliminate pain and to create feelings of relaxation and euphoria and even to prepare for breastfeeding after birth. We teach self-hypnosis, breathing, relaxation techniques, visualisations as well as education surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. No it’s not like what you see on TV! If you have ever driven from A to B only to realise when you get to B you have no

memory of the drive, that’s a state of selfhypnosis. MY MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES… Everything! The classes I teach myself and the events I create and manage myself. I employ excellent IT designers to help me with the layout of my website and social media platforms and journalists to proof read my content which is fundamental. HOW MY TYPICAL WORK DAY GOES… I run my own business from home so my ‘work model’ with a one and half year old is very much a work around the baby model. With a partner that works away on a two week on/off roster our life tends to fall into two categories: the ‘dad at home’ category and the ‘dad away’ category. When he is away my day at work basically involves slotting in time sporadically throughout the day when our son sleeps or at night. When my partner is home we usually roster some ‘mummy work days’. I start with a walk to clear my head and then a healthy breakfast, and then it’s basically cram time as I try and get as much done in the allocated time I have! THE MOST REWARDING PART… The response and feedback I get from women and couples; this is what fuels me and keeps me going and shows me that what I am doing is actually making a difference. THE WORST PART… As a midwife when I

Plan B: Being a midwife and emergency nurse. January 2018

14

go into the hospital to work, the worst part is having couples come into labour with absolutely no education or preparation and are completely terrified of the process. WHAT I DO IN MY SPARE TIME… Any not at work time is spent playing with our son, walking on Burleigh Beach, taking our dogs for a walk, lots and lots of cooking as we make everything from scratch and working on our veggie garden. HOW I FIND BALANCE… I think everyone who runs their own business struggles with this. But my top tips are… Core Values: Write down your core values for both family and work. In today’s hectic life it’s easy to get caught up in the ever growing ‘to do list’ and to get off track so I think having values written down grounds you and constantly reminds you why you’re doing what you are doing. Plan your week and set goals: I write massive lists of all my goals and to dos for my work, family and self-downtime and then I prioritise these into a 90 day goal setting program I learnt from Nicky Fogden-Moores. Self-time and stopping: I struggle because I love what I do so it’s very easy to just go, go, go. Ultimately you have to make time for this to prevent burn out and so you can cope better when things go upside down, which is inevitable with toddlers and life!

The truth behind the #trend With accusations of sexual harassment flooding the mass media, online world and daily conversations, Get it explores where the truth ends, and the trend begins

The sexual misconduct tidal wave Here is a summarised list of some of the media scandals since Weinstenin

January 2018

OCT 5 Harvey Weinstein — Hollywood producer and co-founder of the Weinstein Company — accused of raping three women and sexual assault and harassment of dozens of others.

OCT 10 Ben Affleck — Actor — accused of harassing multiple women.

16

OCT 17

OCT 21

Roy Price — Amazon executive — accused of sexual harassment.

Chris Savino — Nickelodeon producer — accused of harassing up to 12 women.

John Besh — Celebrity chef, chief executive of Besh Restaurant Group — accused by 25 women of sexual harassment.

tarting in Hollywood and ending up in our own backyard, more specifically Burke’s Backyard, the end of 2017 saw a tidal wave of sexual harassment claims so big that it became a ‘trending’ topic — so what are the ramifications of sexual misconduct becoming a trend? It’s brought actors, executives, producers, politicians and some of the biggest names in the world undone. Names so big that they may have thought they were untouchable, that they could get away with sexual harassment of their staff, those in lower positions or those looking to ‘make it’ in their industry. Men may have thought they had all the power and could do what they wanted to women… but now women are fighting back, reclaiming their power and speaking out about their experiences.

HOW IT STARTED Sexual harassment is nothing new, with big names like Rolf Harris and even US President Donald Trump being accused recently… who could forget the, “Grab them by the p*ssy” retorts of Trump in the media that surfaced pre-election? But it was really brought into the spotlight when Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was accused of raping three women and the sexual assault and harassment of dozens of others, dating back to the 1980s. These women included actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Rose McGowan, Ashley Judd and Angelina Jolie. Worse yet, many in the industry supposedly knew of this indecent behaviour but no one spoke up about it. However, once one did, many did, and now around 40 men in entertainment industries and similar positions have been accused of sexual misconduct since October, 2017. THE #METOO CAMPAIGN It began with a tweet from actress Alyssa Milano on October 15, 2017, who called anyone who has experienced sexual harassment to respond with “Me too” or the hashtag #metoo on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Hundreds of thousands have since joined the movement and used the hashtag. From celebrities like Lady Gaga to regular people, stories have been told from childhood, teen years, adulthood and some even shared multiple accounts. The perpetrators were often authority figures, trusted clergy, family members, strangers, co-workers or friends. The trend was born. The more that used the hashtag, the more accusations came forward… the more accusations, the bigger the momentum became…

TIME MAGAZINE’S SILENCE BREAKERS Time magazine’s ‘Person of the Year’ issue was released at the end of last year and featured a cover dedicated to the movement. There were six women known as ‘The Silence Breakers’ featured on it, all women who have come forward to accuse powerful figures of sexual misconduct. These women were named the collective Person of the Year. Taylor Swift, Ashley Judd, Alyssa Milano, Tarana Burke and Selma Blair were the women featured on the cover with one additional women’s elbow visible in the bottom corner. Time Magazine has said this is a young hospital

worker from “the middle of the country” who fears the repercussions if she comes forward with her story of sexual harassment. It serves as a representation of the victims who are still afraid to speak out with their stories, fearful of repercussions and reprise.

"From celebrities like Lady Gaga to regular people, stories have been told from childhood, teen years, adulthood and some even shared multiple accounts. The perpetrators were often authority figures, trusted clergy, family members, strangers, co-workers or friends."

Although this cover is a powerful and timely statement, Time’s choice for their collective person of the year and runner up have been met with confusion. The magazine put women who have been voices of the sexual harassment momentum on the cover but named Donald Trump, a man who has been accused by at least 16 women of sexual assault, as the runner up. The magazine does claim to choose the person of the year based on their impact — for better or for worse — but having The Silence Breakers and Trump side by side didn’t sit well with many. Was it an intentional media stunt? One would like to hope not. SEXUAL HARASSMENT AS A ‘TREND’ While no one should ever be made to stay quiet about sexual harassment, or any assault, it’s important this topic, and the nature of it, gains traction for the truth, not the trend. It’s also important for people not to just jump on the bandwagon to gain exposure, attention or because it’s the ‘cool’ thing to do right now. They should be part of the ‘trend’ because they have the courage to speak up, because they don’t want their predator to get away with it and because it’s the right thing to do.

There are huge ramifications for people who are accused of sexual harassment, just look to the media and many of the big names that have been accused have since resigned, been fired and lost any credit and respect they had. Again, it’s important sexual harassment is reported for the truth here, not just to jump on a trend. And last but not least, not all men are bad ladies! This movement is not about gathering all the men to burn at the stake. Hell, it’s not only men who can be predators. So remember, there are still some tremendously great men out there, who are amazing bosses, coworkers, family members and community leaders. This trend isn’t about rallying against men, it’s about rallying against the notion that sexual harassment victims need to stay silenced and fearful of speaking up. The only people who should have fear are those that have previously committed acts of sexual harassment or assault and thought they could get away with it, because if this trend continues, the truth will come out. As both the truth and the trend continue to gain momentum, the world will wait with bated breath to witness the full aftermath of this epidemic. As the accused face their day in court, more perpetrators are named and victims continue to feel the collective strength of this movement, only time will tell as to the true impact it will have. We can only hope that it achieves the justice and resolution its victims deserve, rather than simply falling dormant like other social trends before it.

SEXUAL ASSAULT ON THE GC The biggest Australian name to come out of this scandal has been Don Burke. The entertainer, known for gardening program Burke's Backyard, has been accused of assaulting, sexually harassing and bullying a string of female employees. Sexual assault isn’t something that just happens in Hollywood, it happens here in Australia and is happening here on the Gold Coast. New statistics have shown sexual assaults have spiked by more than 30 per cent on the Gold Coast recently. That’s atrocious. If we can learn anything from the Hollywood scandals it’s that it is important to report any instances and not feel you have to stay silenced. Plus there are no circumstances where it is okay to abuse your power and sexually harass or assault someone. No exceptions.

WHAT MEN HAVE TO SAY

While there are many Hollywood big shots in the wrong here, there are also many male celebrities who are speaking out against these wrongdoings. Many of them spoke out condemning Harvey Weinstein’s actions and sexual harassment as a whole. Here’s what a few of them had to say. Ryan Gosling on Twitter:“I want to add my voice of support for the women who have had the courage to speak out against Harvey Weinstein. Like most people in Hollywood, I have worked with him and I’m deeply disappointed in myself for being so oblivious to these devastating experiences of sexual harassment and abuse. He is emblematic of a systemic problem. Men should stand with women and work together until there is real accountability and change.” Joe Biden told a crowd at Rutgers University:“Silence, is complicity. Silence is consent. Sexual assault is not about sex. It is about power. It’s about the abuse of power. And it’s about deeply embedded attitudes in our culture that, for a thousand years of shame, the victims allowed the perpetrators to escape the consequences of their actions.” George Clooney on the Today show: “Somebody knew. There are people that brought young actresses to his [Harvey Weinstein’s] hotel room. Whoever had that story and didn’t write it should be held responsible. We should’ve known this. This is violating women. This is assault. This is silencing women.”

NOV 20 John Conyers — U.S. Senator — accused of sexual harassment of staffers.

NOV 21 John Lasseter — Pixar and Disney Animation chief — accused by several women of unwanted touching.

Russell Simmons — Entrepreneur, co-founder of Def Jam Recordings — accused of harassment forced sex.

BACK TO

WORK How to get organised for the new year

Reset your body clock. No more late nights and sleep ins! Start going to bed earlier and getting up around the same time you would for work at least a couple of days before your first work day. Get organised. Whether you work from home or in a shared office, having a tidy work space can give you the motivation to power through your day. Clear out old paperwork, de-clutter your desk and get some new stylish stationery. Check your mindset. Looking to the future and believing that you can learn, develop new skills and change will help you to make the most of every opportunity that comes your way this year. Be kind to yourself. If possible try to ease your way back in and give yourself time to get back into your working rhythm. Prioritise and handwrite your to-do list. Our ability to recall facts and ideas is heightened when we write them down the old-fashioned way — by hand. So write down an achievable to-do list every day, which gives you an overview of the things that need to be done. Set yourself up for success. When you’re planning your day think about the times when you feel most energised and productive and make the most of that time to get through tasks that need a lot of focus. Write a handwritten letter to your future self. Choose a date some months or years ahead then imagine that things have turned out the way you wanted them to. Write yourself a letter telling yourself about these positive developments in your life. This can help you achieve what you wish.

I moustache you a question… rd

The female moustache. The Womanly Whiskers, if you will. The Man Tickler. The Wo (The Mo, but for women… get it? Okay, I’ll stop now!). But all jokes aside — and believe me, I’ve got plenty — this is a passionate and divisive topic for all of womankind. Nothing unites a group of females — particularly an office full of them, as I learned — like a discussion about upper lip hair. Stories of relentless schoolyard teasing and horrific hair removal mistakes unify women in a shared sisterhood, fighting a common enemy. But why does such a small scattering of facial fuzz cause such a dramatic reaction? Like any curious mind, I turned to my most trusted source of knowledge and wisdom: Google. And boy, did I receive an education. Almost every article — most commonly straight from the pages of our favourite glossy magazines — was advising on how to get rid of the unwanted inhabitant of your top lip. Wax it, shave it, bleach it, thread it, Nair it, pluck it or just laser that beast away. Anything at all, just do not rock it. So much hate for the lady ‘stache, but why? Oh… because we’re ladies! And ladies are not allowed to have a single solidary strand of hideous hair on our perfectly preened bodies, with the exception of our heads where it should defy gravity with its volume and bounce. Oh puh-lease! Let’s just pretend for one second that in today’s world it is actually possible for women to sport facial hair and for men to have boobs. Let’s pretend for a moment that extra fuzz on your top lip is not a characteristic of masculinity, but potentially a result of hormonal imbalances, or conditions such as polycystic ovaries. Absurd, right?! The truth is, every one of us has a little ‘stache of our own, whether it be a subtle peach fuzz or a full-blown Tom Sellic masterpiece. If hipster men can flaunt their full, lush lady ticklers, adorned with everything from Christmas baubles (it’s a thing, look it up) to stale food scraps, then why the hell shouldn’t we embrace our fuzz?! So to the sisterhood of the lady mo, I salute you! Keep doing you girlfriend, keep doing you!

Kissable lips hat girl doesn’t love wearing lippy? But when it gets on our wine glasses, clothing and men, it can be a bit of a pain (and an unwelcome surprise for them). Not to mention it’s a hassle to keep reapplying. That’s why this month we’re on the hunt for a kiss-proof lipstick that we can apply and forget about. We want something that will stay on our lips and keep us looking glam no matter how many glasses of wine we enjoy! Too much to ask for? We’re about to find out. The Get it girls armed themselves with their weapon of choice… Leanne smacked on LipSense® Liquid Lip Colour… Kirstin smooched on Australis Velourlips Matte Lip Cream and Hayley puckered up with MODELROCK Vivid Lip Shapers Skinny Stixz. We each then kissed our hand firmly to see what residue the lipstick left and our results are in the picture below (you may need to look very closely!).

We want something that will stay on our lips and keep us looking glam no matter how many glasses of wine we enjoy! The Get it girls, Leanne, Kirstin and Hayley

All of the lipsticks were actually very effective in staying on but two left a little mark. We ranked them from 1 to 3, 1 being the product that left no traces at all and 3 being the one that left a little trace, though not much. 1. LipSense® Liquid Lip Colour 2. MODELROCK Vivid Lip Shapers Skinny Stixz 3. Australis Velourlips Matte Lip Cream There you have it, we think it’s safe to say any one of us could go pucker up now without any lipstick stains… the true test really begins!

Hello fashionistas! A very happy New Year to all my lovely Get it ladies! Bring it on with lots of fun and fashionable moments. Summer is well and truly here and if you haven’t already, it’s time to think swimwear. If Santa didn’t know you wanted a new swimsuit for Christmas, head out and buy yourself one — there’s some truly beautiful ones around! Remember vitamin D is super important, and what better way to get your daily 30 minutes than in style by the pool or at the beach? I always say dress to impress, no matter what size or shape you are. Ditch the resolutions to lose weight because there are so many cuts, shapes and styles that flatter all ladies and all tummies. Do a little bit of research before heading out on your swimwear mission. By shopping at stores that carry swimwear you would fit (size, style and cup wise) you will have plenty of options. This month’s style advice is for my ladies who are after a bit of tummy control. If you’re a little selfconscious about your tummy but still want to wear a two piece, choose solid colours for the bottom that have a bit of ruching at the front. Look for a feminine flirty shape, with frills or a bright colour on the top to draw the eye line up. One pieces are always a great choice too and a V neck style will lengthen your body, drawing attention away from the tummy area. There are really gorgeous cover ups around too. Soft draping around the tummy line will create a beautiful look, also vertical lines will lengthen a short waist. Don't be put off by sizing, they can vary dramatically! Go for what is comfortable, flattering, and don't forget to accessorise! Pick statement necklaces that match the neckline of the swimsuit as well as fun earrings. A floppy hat and stylish sunnies are a must too. A well put together look will not only make you feel amazing, but you will see the compliments flood in, and what girl doesn’t enjoy a few compliments? So go on, rock that body you have been given!

You’re ready to share your life with someone, but you both still want to maintain your own personal lives outside of your relationship. You want someone who supports you but will also stand his ground if he disagrees with you. You’re ready for a fully functioning adult relationship with another human being. Get dating!

xplain this to me. So I go to the pub and make a comment about the ‘neat’ girl serving behind the bar, right? I might have said something like, “Check that one out, she’s a bit of okay”. I might have even commented about a couple of her assets too, and not the long blonde ponytail or her recently ‘blinged up’ nails either. I just made a couple of comments over the course of the night and maybe had a glance or two in her direction… and suddenly the other half is behaving like Eeyore with a rain cloud over her head. I know from the looks I am getting over dinner that payback is going to be a b*tch.

21-50 points: A man’s best friend You want someone who will be waiting at the door patiently to greet you when you come home every time, even if you only nipped out to the car to grab your phone. He’s just happy you’re home! He’s happy to do whatever you’d like, just as long as you’re together. Ladies, you want everlasting love…. the type of love a four-legged, puppy-dog-eyed, ball of fluff can provide. Get in the car and head down to your local shelter. Stat.

Fast forward to Wednesday night and we’re sitting down in front of the telly. This guy, who everyone tells me is super nice, appears on the screen half naked and ‘the other half’ comments on the size of his chest and how she wouldn’t mind it if he left his Nikes under her bed sometime soon. Here’s my question, why do I get the ‘treatment’ and she gets away with it? I’m all for women’s rights and gender equality, don’t get me wrong, but why can she look and comment, and I can’t without fear of repercussion? We’re both simply showing appreciation of the human body and, let’s face it, neither of us is going to do anything untoward.

7- 20 points: No one You’re fiercely independent. You’re at that stage in your life where you want to prioritise your needs and aspirations above someone else’s. Check back in a few months… or years. For now, you’re perfectly happy being your own best friend.

So why can’t we appreciate the ‘female’ or ‘male’ form without being slammed as sexist? When is the time going to come when we realise that the human form deserves and wants to be admired just like the works of our museum and art gallery masters? A showing of the human form? That’s a museum I’d visit. But then again, I do every Saturday — it’s my local beer garden.

GET IT I HEALTH

Stylish, savvy and

sun smart

Stay stylish this summer while keeping sun smart with our list of sun protection tips that won’t compromise your show-stopping poolside glam e’ve heard the statistics and we know all too well what damage a few hours too long in the sun can do, but who can resist when summer days on the Gold Coast are so beautiful? A Sunday spent sipping on cocktails and lounging beside the pool with the latest issue of Get it in hand? Yes please! For some of us, just five minutes in the sun means a full bottle of aloe vera and a week of shedding skin. But even if you are one of the lucky few that has never felt the painful sting of sunburn, you’re still just as susceptible to skin cancer. So what are we supposed to do, simply accept our fate and lock ourselves away in the darkest depths of our homes, never to feel the warm embrace of the sunshine beating on our skin? No! There is hope for us mere sunseeking mortals. With Med Centres Skin Cancer checks and a couple of our sun smart style ideas under your belt, you’ll be able to enjoy everything the Sunshine State has to offer this summer.

STYLISH COVER UPS

Cover up

by Coolibar You don’t have to layer yourself with fabric if you want to spend the day in the sun ladies, just be savvy about your fabric choices. Synthetic fabrics such as nylon and polyester offer more protection as they have a tighter fabric weave, meaning less harmful UV rays will reach your skin. Some brands offer a UPF rating for their clothing (not to be confused with SPF, this stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor), which is the most effective choice when it comes to sun protection. A t-shirt with a UPF 50 rating offers the best coverage, only letting 2% of the sun’s rays reach your skin, compared to the 20% from your favourite cotton tee.

BE SPF SAVY Be proactive ladies, don’t wait until you’re out at the beach to lather yourself head to toe in SPF sunscreen. If you still want that bronzed, summer glow, get your hands on a gradual tanning

moisturiser. These heaven-sent babies often have an SPF factor (most SPF 15) also, which means you’re getting a safe, beautiful tan! THE RIGHT HAT What better way to make a fashion statement than with an oversized wide brimmed hat? Not only will you be the style envy of the poolside social scene, but you’ll also have some extra sun protection. It’s a no brainer — don your most dramatic wide brimmed hat, pull on the black shades and rock the safe summer style! GET CHECKED Lastly and perhaps most importantly, book in for regular appointments with Med Centres. Early detection of skin cancers can help prevent you from becoming another statistic, and with two in three Australians being diagnosed by the age of 70 each year, that’s a statistic you want to avoid! Next time you’re booking in your bikini wax and microdermabrasion scrub, book in at Med Centres and ensure your skin is glowing from the inside out!

escapes

With an extra 100,000 people on the Gold Coast from April 4 to 15, it’s the perfect opportunity to leave the traffic and busyness behind and jet off to one of these top destinations FASHION Phone your girlfriends up and book a trip to Hong Kong for a fashionfocused holiday like no other. You’ll find fabulous bargains in Shenzhen which is on the border of Hong Kong and China. Even better, you can have your new purchases tailored to your body then and there for a fraction of the price charged in Australia. Fabulous fashion that fits perfectly? Yes please! FOOD Relax and enjoy food, wine and everything fine when you head off on a wine and food trail with the girls or for a bit of romance with your partner. It will be cold and cosy in our gorgeous homeland wineries of Adelaide, Victoria, Southern WA and Tassie, and you may also consider the land of the long white cloud, New Zealand.

FAMILY

FLAME

Get the whole family away from the Gold Coast and off to Hawaii for a holiday you and the kids will not forget anytime soon. They will love the Disneyland Resort — Aulani, island hopping, snorkelling, seeing the big volcano Ktlauea erupting and exploring the lush and spectacular waterfall/garden island of Kauai. P.S. There’s also great shopping with lots of outlets and American brands, but don’t mention that part to hubby, simply tell him you’re off for a spa day! FUN April is a fantastic time for your very own Australian safari. Head up north to Darwin, The Kimberly, Ayers Rock and Kakadu National Park. The wet season is coming to an end so there is plenty of water around, which means plenty of wildlife for all the family to enjoy. The kids will love the huge crocodiles just metres away from them while you are all in the safety of your boat!

It’s important to keep that spark alive so if it’s been less Love Boat and more love lost between you two lately, a romantic getaway is sure to fix that! You really cannot go past the Maldives for some rekindling. Beautiful blue water, over water bungalows and privacy, it’s sure to get things heated between you two (and we’re not talking about the temperature!). Spend one week in the Maldives and one in Singapore or Hong Kong to make it a great combination tour. With ‘adult time’ the first week and shopping the next, you’ll both go home very happy. FREEDOM Go at your own pace and board a cruise where you can do as much or as little as you like. See the gorgeous sights, fabulous shows and decadent food as you cruise around one of the popular destinations. It’s a great option for older couples as well as those who don’t want to travel too far. Some great affordable options early April are in the South Pacific, New Zealand and Northern Queensland.

MALDIVES ON SALE The spectacular Maldives offers the most beautiful and tranquil holiday escape. Each resort sits on its very own island with the an unforgettable experience starting from the time you board a seaplane or speedboat to your island hideaway. GET IT I BUSINESS

HOW TO

GET ALONG WITH PEOPLE

you don't like

Let’s face it, most of us don’t get along with everyone we work or socialise with; rather than suffering through each interaction, we can find ways to get along explains Karen Gately, a founder of HR Consultancy Ryan Gately o ‘get along’ with someone broadly means to be on friendly terms with them. When it comes to colleagues, it largely means the ability to work in a spirit of cooperation and get the job done to the best of your collective ability. Getting along with a relative or a ‘friend of a friend’ you don’t particularly like, on the other hand means finding ways to enjoy their company, or at the very least avoid unnecessary stress and angst every time you get together. Choose your attitude The key to getting along with anyone lies in your ability to choose your attitude. Of course, their attitude matters also, but the reality is you can’t control other people. Focus on what you can control; that is your own thoughts, emotions and behaviour. So many of us waste energy thinking and talking about people we don’t like. How often do you replay annoying events or conversations in your mind? Do you ‘roleplay’ scenarios in your mind about the conversations you intend to have with some people? Do you imagine yourself winning an argument with your nemesis? January 2018

Do you allow your emotions to build as you invest in the drama unfolding in your mind? We all have the power to choose the thoughts and emotions we invest in. The ability for anyone to offend us or drain our spirit entirely depends on our response. We choose how the words and actions of other people make us feel. Much like the teasing big brother or sister, they only win if you allow them to upset you. Pick your battles While of course it matters to stand up for ourselves when being mistreated, in many circumstances we can simply choose to ignore the things that otherwise upset us. We have the choice to simply walk away and disengage rather than wade into an argument. We can choose to let thoughtless comments or unintentionally offensive remarks ‘go through to the keeper’. Choosing for example to see someone’s words as illconsidered is healthier for our relationship with them, rather than assuming their actions are malicious. Judge carefully Ask yourself if you are being unfairly judgmental. Sometimes the actions we see as wrong are simply different to the way we would approach things. Reflect on why you don’t like the person and challenge any unfounded assumptions or unconscious biases you may have. For example, the woman you perceive as being attention seeking, may be simply talkative 38

and unaware that her enthusiastic sharing of stories about her life is coming across as insufferable self-indulgence. Reserve judgement. Our experiences of people quite reasonably form expectations of them in the future. Be careful not to allow baggage from the past cloud your view of someone’s potential. We all make mistakes, maybe with a little forgiveness and relaxed expectations, you can learn to like some, if not all, aspects of the person they are. Build bridges Look for ways in which you can build trust, respect and rapport. Common interests are a safe place to start. Find out things about the person you find interesting or respect. This can be particularly challenging with some people, but appreciate the good that can be found in most people and give credit where it is due. Rapport can be built by finding common ground as well as by being empathic. However, it’s important to understand that most rapport-building happens without words and through non-verbal communication channels. People build rapport subconsciously through nonverbal signals, including eye contact, facial expressions, body positioning and tone of voice. Now you’re ready to head into 2018, getting along with all people (well, at least most!).

Have a REMINDER. A person, a picture, a phrase or a quote, anything that will keep you FOCUSED on why you are doing it.

How to stick to your New Year’s health resolution Take the smart approach to your 2018 nutrition goals with Jeff Osborne from Vision Personal Training Bundall obody ever gets in great shape, cleans up their food habits, exercises regularly and then a few months or years down the track regrets it! Nobody! 100% of the time and effort you put into being healthier makes you feel better, perform better and look better, and it turns out to be something you are proud of. If you think those fit looking people on Instagram look too happy, it’s probably because they are. So how do you make it happen? Spend time getting prepared According to Kelly McGonigal, the will power muscle, like all muscles, can get tired and give in when it’s made to work hard all day. Save your will power for important decisions. Spending 3 hours on a Sunday buying, chopping and preparing food may seem like a lot, but when it saves you on average 45mins a day (5 hours a week) it is time well spent. Scour through cook books, websites and apps, and find about 3-7 breakfast ideas, 5-10 lunch ideas, 5-10 snack ideas and 10-15 dinner ideas. Then write out a sample week and work out how much of each ingredient you would need so you are prepared for the week.

At Vision we have a great App (Vision Virtual Training) that makes it super easy to have and stick to a meal plan. Make dinners easy To eat like royalty at dinner try this easy trick. Plan the protein serve you will use for the days of the week. Then clean the veggie drawer in your fridge out, chop your salad up (all the lettuce, capsicum, cucumber, onion, mushrooms and so on) and place it in the draw with a wet tea towel over the top of it. Make sure every few days the tea towel is still wet so the salad will stay crispy and fresh for over a week! Come dinner time, cook your protein, serve it up and leave the huge salad bowl in the middle for everyone to pick at. This worked especially well with my kids who got curious about all the different veggies and discovered they loved cucumber (and started fighting over it!). Know your weaknesses Understand and know where you are likely to struggle and plan around it. If you know a particular friend or place that presents temptations, do something to prepare for it. Eat beforehand so you aren't hungry and tempted by all the snack foods, be the designated driver or choose the healthier options of what is available. Remind yourself of why you are doing it Have a reminder. A person, a picture, a phrase or a quote, anything that will keep you focused on why you are doing it. Set up proximity reminders on your phone so when you go to certain locations you get the reminder — rename your alarm to your reminder or write it in a book every time you brush your teeth. Any or all of these things help you stay focused through the year. Remember… it will all be worth it! When it gets tough, or you fall off the horse (both of which will happen), how you speak to yourself will determine how well you do. If you call yourself names (stupid, idiot) and you repeat how you always fail at this, then that is exactly what will happen. If you fall off the horse, congratulate yourself for recognising it, how long you have made it and then get straight back on, you are more likely to make permanent changes. GET IT I SOCIAL MEDIA

Fake it

Put simply, fake news is fabricated content that circulates under the pretence of actual news coverage, which is often sensationalised and created to misinform the reader.

'til you make it If social media wasn’t bad enough already with its fake accounts, fake friends and fake boobs we now have ‘fake news’ reports Get it’s Caillin Palmero

don’t know about you, but whenever I hear the words ‘fake news’ my mind quickly goes to a one particular American president who’s indulged in one too many spray tans. Although Donald Trump has seemingly adopted the term as his own and — in true Trump style — credited himself for coining the phrase, fake news is a widespread phenomenon and is quickly becoming an increasingly difficult issue to tackle for mainstream media. These days, we’re constantly bombarded with news stories; in the ad breaks during Home and Away, on the radio during the morning commute or even as we scroll through our Facebook newsfeeds. And while we’re all guilty of passively changing the channel or scrolling past, like it or not, we’re still always consuming news. But every once in a while, we’ll come across a story that is so salacious and far-fetching that it makes us pause for a second and think, ‘Is this real?’ and an increasing number of times, it isn’t… it’s fake news. So, what is fake news? While Donald Trump has used the term to basically describe any news coverage that didn’t paint him in a favourable light *eye roll*, genuine fake news is actually a very serious issue. Put simply, fake news is fabricated content that circulates under the pretence of actual news coverage, which is often sensationalised and created to misinform the reader. It looks like news, sounds like news, but isn’t actually news at all. People wanting to earn an extra dollar or two are now cashing in on click bait fake news. You know that link that popped up on your Facebook feed that said,‘Nicole and Keith are expecting quadruplets?!’ and you clicked it (I don’t blame you, who doesn’t want to know about Australia’s favourite couple?), well someone on the other side of the world is cashing in on your curiosity. Fabricated stories like those are automated advertising in a simple cash-for-clicks formula. Does fake news really affect me personally? While it’s easy to keep our heads in the sand and pretend like it doesn’t affect us directly, the harsh reality is that fake news doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. As news consumers, we deserve the truth; a few false articles here and there might not seem like a huge deal, but how are we supposed to form our own opinions if the information we’re given is incorrect? So, with this in mind, it’s time to get your fake news goggles on and sift through the fake articles! January 2018

How to spot fake news: l Consider the source: Click away from the article and investigate the site. Is it a legitimate news source? Is the URL unfamiliar? l Check the author: How credible are they? l Check the date: Is it an old news story that’s just been reposted? l Check your biases: Consider if your own beliefs could affect your judgement. You might want Nicole and Keith to be pregnant with beautiful strawberry blonde quadruplets, but is it likely to be true? l Read beyond: Headlines are often outrageous to attract clicks. What’s the whole article about? l Check it’s not a joke: If it seems too far-fetched, it might be satire. l Ask the experts: If you’re still unsure, consult a fact checking website or at worst, try Google! Although Trump might have us believing that fake news is any news coverage that isn’t in his best interest, we know that there is a lot more to this growing online issue. But armed with this knowledge and a keen eye, you can build your immunity to the disease that is fake news. 44

Old Tom pays homage to the 18th century prohibition era in the United Kingdom where public houses would have a carving of a tomcat outside their establishments for members to purchase gin from. The fit out features a luxurious plush dining room, marble flooring, library of old English classic books and a public house styled façade to coincide with the era. The formal dining room offers a set 3, 6 or 9 course menu of Australian modern fine dining, while the lounge and library offer a more relaxed bar snack and shared plate menu. Old Tom Restaurant and Bar has a very strong focus on quality gins and is passionate about sharing their complexities and varieties with guests.

GET IT I STARS

What will the future hold? Discover what 2018 will bring with avid professional astrologer, writer and teacher Cassandra Tyndall (cassandratyndall.com)

s the old year becomes new, we are filled with hopes, inspirations and plans for the upcoming 12 months. Regardless of what your intentions are for 2018, one big theme on the way is change. One of the most significant differences in 2018 is the shift in the outer planets from masculine to feminine signs. Over the last few years we’ve had a predominance of the outer planets in the masculine air and fire signs, bringing volatility and movement. Since October 2017, with Jupiter’s entrance into Scorpio, we are now entering a phase of the earth and water, or feminine elements. The quality of 2018 is set to be an introspective or reflective year, highlighting depth and togetherness. Here are some of the specific planetary events that can shape what 2018 may mean for you. JUPITER IN SCORPIO October 2017 – November 2018 Truth, trust and loyalty are paramount when the biggest planet tours the deepest sign. The key to growth and expansion may lie in exposing the darkest parts of yourself and allowing your vulnerabilities to become your strengths. One of the keys to making the most of this cycle is to run head on into what you fear. Seek out experiences that are confronting or challenging to your comfort zone, such as public speaking. Scorpio is a fixed sign, so persistence will pay off. Keep digging until you find your own reservoir of personal power. Tapping into your resilience will help inspire, motivate and set your soul free from fear. Relationships are highlighted under this cycle as deep connections are sought out. You may realise that superficial connections just don’t cut it anymore. January 2018

SATURN IN CAPRICORN December 2017 – 2020 Taking responsibility for your ambitions will be a huge theme while Saturn is in Capricorn. The next three years will encourage hard work to obtain things that last. Whether it is career progress, financial security or a committed relationship, Saturn in Capricorn can help make it manifest. This cycle may remind you of some of the old school rules for success such as commitment, routine and not just showing up, but, most importantly, getting work done. Saturn’s associations with time will become important over the next few years. Re-structuring your time to reflect your personal priorities will be key during this cycle. How you spend your time will reflect your success, or lack thereof. The ‘no frills’ quality of Saturn can help you make mindful choices about taking on more responsibility or perhaps, passing the baton to someone else. Time is our biggest commodity. If how you’re spending time doesn’t reflect what you wish to achieve, this New Year period may be the perfect opportunity to plan, schedule and organise. Consider your todo list. If feelings of frustration or tension arise from not achieving your long-term goals, then a major overhaul of your time management strategies will be a must! Long-held traditions may be up for a restructure too under this period. As you begin to choose with more mindfulness about how you spend your time, you may come to realise that some rituals and traditions don’t hold the meaning they once did.

practicality and resistance. Long-established patterns and routines can be up-ended under the influence of Uranus. Taurus’ ability to dig in its heels and endure can be a positive quality in some circumstances, but can ultimately leave you unstuck when Uranus is involved. Those who are Taureans, who have personal planets in Taurus, or are the fellow fixed signs of Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, will feel Uranus’ influence the most in 2018. Uranus will be in Taurus for the second half of the year. Due to a retrograde period, he will slip back into Aries, then return to Taurus in early 2019. Fixed signs are the most resistant to change and the preview of this sevenyear cycle starting in May offers you the opportunity to start taking small steps to embrace change. If you find yourself doing things because that’s the way you’ve always done them, stop. That is your invitation to try something different; no matter how small the step, take it. It may be better suited to your nature to have several small tremors than one massive earthquake! Taurus is the most materially focused sign of the zodiac, while Uranus craves freedom and separation. You may form new attitudes about what you own or possess under this cycle, especially if you feel tied down by the things you own. As the need for freedom and independence heightens, your relationships may change too. Habits and routines in relationships of all kinds may undergo significant shifts.

URANUS IN TAURUS May – November 2018 It’s been five years since we had a significant shift in the outer planets, and Uranus and Taurus bring opposing qualities to the table. Uranus waves the flag for change and chaos. Taurus finds stability in

Overall, 2018 reflects the concept of, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. Deep introspection and questioning of your personal priorities is a must. It’s not about change for change’s sake, but rather aligning the changes within your heart to create the life you want.

GET IT I LAST WORD

Ritualsof a new year Sarah Blinco on how to get ready for 2018

elcome to the New Year! Old habits die hard, right? For this month we’ll still write the date as ‘2017’, analyse our horoscope (even if we don’t believe), and determine that this is the year of less gin and more gym. Yes absolutely, (tomorrow)! Many of us also repeat a New Year ritual and I’ve come to relish in mine. After a run of January 1sts where I was left feeling more than a little let down and empty, I realised that the act of having a ‘refresh’ routine was what might save me. For a bit of light relief, the first thing I seek are signs it will be a year of promise. I’m delighted to discover that it’s the Chinese Year of the Dog. Anything to do with dogs is good by me! I know nothing of numerology, yet I find myself dabbling with numbers: 2+0+1+8 = 11. Eleven then breaks down to one plus one equalling two, marking the ‘beginning of a new direction’, so my online research explains. Numbers and signs lift my spirits, but we know nothing happens without action and intention. So, after I’ve had my fun looking at what’s in the stars, my personal ritual gets old-school as I turn off the computer and turn back to pen and paper. As far as I’m concerned, the power of writing things down is not to be underestimated. A few years ago, we went on a winter trip abroad and I used a long-haul flight home to Queensland to have a think about what I’d like to come out of the year ahead. I peeled open my shiny new diary for the year — clean pages representing the chance at an organised, fresh start. In an appropriate space up the front, I wrote a list of things I hoped for. I didn’t have any real method in mind, I simply noted my desires. We landed back in Australia and I went about filling my diary with events, tasks and to-do lists, enjoying the delicious satisfaction of crossing items off, marking as ‘done’. At some point later in the year, I went fishing around in the front of the book looking for a note I had paperclipped inside, and I spotted the list I’d made on the plane. Amazed, I realised that many things I’d written down (but had forgotten about) had come true. I felt like I’d experienced a little bit of magic in that discovery! Since then, I’ve been more conscious about my New Year ‘write it down’ ritual, and I’ve tweaked it to make it as powerful as possible. I try not to be too prescriptive in terms of detail. Instead, I write down January 2018

how I want to feel. This bit has become important to me. I have discovered that what I (think I) want, or what is for the greatest good, might not come in the exact package I imagine. Some of my list includes, ‘I want to feel valued and respected at work’, ‘I want to feel inspired by the creative people who surround me’, ‘I want to feel fit and healthy’. Coming at the New Year with this attitude — imagining it, and repeating these mantras — helps me detach from specific outcomes, and inevitably brings me a wealth of opportunities better than I could have dreamed of. My New Year ritual closes with two important acts: giving thanks, and letting go. Gratitude to my people, lessons, loves and experiences that make and break. And, dropping (as hard as this can be) toxic grudges and situations that simply do not serve me. Desires, dogs and new directions — feels good to me. What’s on the cards for you this month? We’d love to hear about your refresh rituals. Do drop us a line with your own words of wisdom, on Facebook: get.it.mag or Instagram: getitmag. Happy New Year!
