LETTER FROM

Kathleen Editor

t seems in a blink of an eye another festive season has passed us by. What we’re left with as we stash away our favourite heels, dazzling dresses and decadent treats (which have added considerable - uhh, strength - to our waistlines), are hopes for what the New Year will bring. So, how do we keep the sparkle going throughout 2019 without the daily bubbles and champagne toasts? I recently attended a talk as part of London Fashion Week in 2018 (not to brag). One speaker was former British Vogue Editor in Chief Alexandra Shulman. If you don’t know her, perhaps Google – she’s an amazing woman! Alexandra spoke about her experience as a working mum, her time in the highly competitive industry and how she saw herself progressing after all those years at Vogue. Thankfully, there was an opportunity for me to ask a question I was desperate to know the answer to. Taking a deep breath (whilst mentally preparing for a The Devil Wears Prada moment), I asked if she could go back, what advice would she give herself at the start of her career. She gave me hope with a very wise sentiment: “Be stubborn about your goals but flexible about your methods”. So, dear Get it girls, whether career aspirations draw you to our article on thriving at work in 2019 or the style pages inspire a new look, remember to keep the end goal in sight but take it one step at a time. With determination, and a little help from your friends (and your trusty copy of Get it) you’ll achieve all this and more in 2019. Still unsure about what 2019 will bring? Take a leaf out of Alexandra’s book after leaving Vogue and think of it as another exciting chapter of your life that is full of possibilities.

GET IT I GET THINKING

AN unforgettable EXPERIENCE — with Nicola George —

• fashion • accessories

very woman (and man) should go to a spa at some point in their lives. At least once. It should be a mandatory life experience; up there with getting your driver’s licence and nursing your first heartbreak. What doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger right? Let me just say this, I love being pampered. Love it, love it, love it and I will choose a massage or manicure over vacuuming the floors and doing the dishes any day of the week. But one time I pushed the boundary of the whole spa experience and went to, let’s just call it “Viva La Ouch” and took my mum along for the company. It started like any other spa day: fluffy white robes and warm herbal tea, soft tones of birds chirping through the speakers and the aroma of rose and spices. We were happy and content to accept what was to come… until we were handed paper g-strings and asked to strip down starkers and make our way to the communal (yes, you read that right - communal) shower and steam room. My mum and I shared a look of horror before traipsing down the hall to join the other ladies sitting in the steam room – except that there was no steam and half of them forgot to wear their paper g-strings! Now, please remember that I was with my mother. And we got an eyeful. And they must’ve got an eyeful too. We were given black clay to rub into our skin which was pretty cool, and we did it in a rush to try and cover some amount of nakedness. Then an army of spa therapists waltzed in and asked us to line up under the showers, which we did, not knowing that we were about to be washed by a complete stranger, top to toe. My mum was throwing me daggers and I was silently regretting making the booking for us. This was so not relaxing. I focused my attention on the floor of the shower and watched as the black clay sunk slowly down into the drain. I wished that I could follow it! Next, we were marched in military line to the hot beds where I thought we would finally get to relax and chat and nap maybe, but no. After lying down and getting comfortable we were accosted again by the therapists with an hour of heavy-handed exfoliation using a variety of tools that I am sure where used in 16th century torture chambers. I surrender, ok! Finally, when that came to an end, I picked myself off the bed… leaving behind half my skin and all of my dignity and was ‘invited’ to shower again before the massage. I raced my mum to the showers and we rinsed the remainder of our resolve down the drain, deciding to forego the rest of our treatment, by planning our great escape – feigning a headache. There was no feigning on my part, my head ached, my body ached and if I had any skin left – that would’ve ached too! And so, after escaping Alcatraz and with an afternoon free and nothing to do, the floors got vacuumed and the dishes got washed. Next time I book a spa day, I’ll read the reviews first!

Enjoy a premium shopping experience!

with

MADONNA WILLIAMS

adonna Williams is many things; owner of Zen Soul Life, international yoga instructor, published author of Zen Soul Your Life (2013), founder of Williams Talent Management and a wife and mother. She has had an extraordinary career path spanning working as a Zen Thai Shiatsu massage therapist, to a nutritionist and personal trainer. Providing her expertise to respected organisations including the likes of Sanctuary Cove Recreation Club, Golden Door Mirage and Queensland Education, Madonna has gone from strength to strength. It was in 1993, during a tough rehabilitation from a horse riding accident, that Madonna started to study the ancient practice of yoga through books. “I quickly learnt the true gift of yoga for healing and I became fascinated with the benefits of every posture!” she recalled. Today, this is still where Madonna’s passion lies, and her teachings are influenced by the traditions of Hatha, Vinyasa and Kundalini, as well as the modern approach to Yin and Restorative Yoga. It is at her health and healing studio Zen Soul Life, providing yoga, Pilates and meditation that Madonna’s dreams and love for what she does come to fruition. Seeing the growth of Yogis over their yoga teacher training courses and retreats, and getting to teach yoga internationally (including China recently) have always been wonderful moments. It is now a family affair with her husband Scott completing his yoga teacher training last year, and their son Jack set to undertake the course in February this year. “Such love and joy on people’s faces after classes fills me up! Also, when students graduate as new teachers and I rock up as one of their students. I literally cannot get the smile off my face,” Madonna explained. In today’s busy world of tight deadlines and jam-packed schedules, it’s more important than ever to take time for our health. Madonna spoke of the disconnect people feel in today’s world and the rise of depression and anxiety, as well as stress related diseases.“We need yoga as a life skill to help us relax, rebalance, energise and connect with each other so we can be aware of what it means to be truly deeply happy, peaceful and in love with life.” For those hoping to start practicing yoga in 2019, Madonna recommends being prepared to try different styles and teachers while you find the level right for you. Then simply turn up with a good mat, water bottle and be open to finding what resonates with you!

Get it’s Kathleen Loxton sits down with yoga powerhouse and January cover star Madonna Williams

As Madonna’s wisely said,“The first step is to turn up and to begin to understand that yoga is a process not an immediate outcome.” The future of Zen Soul Life is a bright one, with classes expanding from Paradise Point, Coomera, Oxenford, Pacific Pines, Runaway Bay and Main Beach to Southport Broadwater Parklands and Burleigh Heads this year. Further away from home retreats will continue in Byron Bay, and now also Bali. With an exciting year ahead, Madonna’s one-on-one healing miniretreats (in her own private retreat shala) will continue along with the expansion of her essential oil tribe, where members connect and share the therapeutic and emotional balance benefits of precious essential oils. Though,“Of course there’s always a few special surprises planned!” Madonna shared. As a person with many gifts, Madonna also wouldn’t count out doing a follow-up book to Zen Soul Your Life (2013), her A to Z guide for yoga beginners covering positive thoughts, healthy recipes and yoga postures.“I’ve always wanted to write a book about my family and how they’ve shaped me into who I’ve become,” Madonna said. With her son Tom, a talented artist, and plenty of life experiences to draw from, we’ll be watching this space. Feeling incredibly grateful to have spent time with this modernday wonder woman, Madonna leaves us Get it girls with one intriguing thought:“One of my biggest dreams is to attract the ultimate assistant who is inspired by what we do and wants to join me on this incredible yoga mission!” Could this be one of you Get it girls? Start your yoga journey today, and you never know where it’ll take you. See Madonna's full Q&A with Get it at getit-magazine.com.au/ blog/, and follow her at zensoullife.com.au

GET IT I FEATURE

Increasingly, the way we are viewing an individual’s age across industries is changing — so, from the CEO’s office to beauty pageants, what’s the Australian age landscape looking like now? Get it’s Kathleen Loxton finds out how women are empowering each other and firing back at ageist industries rom the boardrooms of Hollywood’s major producers to corporations right here on the Gold Coast, ageism continues to be an important topic, especially when it comes to its impact on equality for women across all industries. In late 2018, The Sydney Morning Herald published that ‘30 per cent of employers are still reluctant to take on workers over 50,’ however, this notion is changing. With the Human Rights Commission predicting in 2015 that the population of Australians aged 65 and over will double by 2055, it’s high time the workplace adapts to include a changing demographic. In fact, it was cited in the same article by The Sydney Morning Herald, that the proportion of employers who weren’t reluctant to hire older workers increased from 8 percent in 2014, to 28 percent in 2018. It is clear that although we are moving in a positive direction when it comes to ageism in the workplace, there is still a lot of work to be done. This was reflected in the Australian Human Rights Commission’s 2016 Willing to Work report, which found that although Australians aged 55 and over made up a quarter of the population, they represented only 16 percent of the workforce. Ageism in particular, is something that has a huge impact on women and their careers. The pressures of society, misogyny and sexism create a toxic blend and an additional barrier to smashing that glass ceiling. No industry is immune, with representation in society and in the media, being one of the toughest challenges. In film? An IMDb study found that while women in their 20s actually get 80 percent of leading roles, this changes by the time they’re 40, when male leads take 80 percent of those roles – meaning women get shorter careers that start earlier. In fashion and beauty? It’s still commonplace to see the likes of 23-year-old Kendall Jenner modelling for anti-ageing beauty products. However, times are changing, and women are using their voices to further equality and challenge outdated stereotypes. January 2019

WHAT’S YOUR Two ladies making huge strides in redefining the standards of their industry, are Australia's two oldest beauty queens, 56-year-old Suzi Dent (Mrs. Earth Ambassador) of the Gold Coast and 60-year-old Robbie Canner (Ms. World) of Sydney. Defying societal and industry norms, both Suzi and Robbie have previously won international beauty pageants at the ages of 55 and 60 respectively. Recently, Suzi and Robbie took home the two highest honours at the 2018 Australian Beauty Pageant Awards in Sydney, Suzi being crowned Role Model of the Year and Robbie

Beauty Queen of the Year. Both Suzi and Robbie represent the progression we are starting to see in the media and right here at home in our workforce (which you can follow on suzident. com). As Robbie put it,‘’It’s not all about the younger visual beauty, bikinis and under 30 anymore, the Silverfox age group as we are commonly known, bring the same visual beauty, fitness wear and over 50 personality into the media world, giving us all a new outlook on life and being recognised for it.” Both women noted how this group has endless potential in terms of marketplace value to add to the Australian workforce. This was a common theme when Get it discussed the topic of ageism with these amazing ladies, but that’s not to say they didn’t face their fair share of struggles though. While on a whole, the atmosphere amongst contestants has been a nurturing and encouraging one throughout their beauty pageants careers, they had to rely on their selfbelief and have confidence in their abilities, to be able to achieve what they have throughout their careers. It has been a process of finding the inner-strength to try different things

Women can continue to learn and grow and reinvent themselves and their career at any age.

12

“ number? throughout their working lives, and say yes, despite any negative self-talk. Suzi described how an important part of this is women sharing their stories and putting their hand up in the office to take-on new projects and promotions. “By not being insecure or embarrassed about talking about their age, because these limiting self – beliefs and internalised ‘I’m too old’ feelings, can actually stop them from flourishing,” she explained. “Women can continue to learn and grow and reinvent themselves and their career at any age.” Both women have taken their skills and experiences gained from varied careers and competing as beauty queens to inspire others, and their lessons are ones that are applicable to all workplaces. As Robbie found, the vital moment is taking the spot at the table you’ve worked hard for.

“The most empowered I have felt during the pageants is when I got out on stage strutting my stuff and realised that finally this was where I wanted to be,” she described. “The audience, the judges, the other ladies — I had moved passed how I thought I had to be, or look, and found just being me so selfempowering.” These ladies plan to keep their career momentum going for a long time yet, and are a wonderful example of doing what you love and taking opportunities to develop your career at any age. Suzi is also a motivational speaker and will shortly be on the road to be involved with her Dead Gorgeous and Flawless workshops, that will be touring across the major shopping centres of Australia, teaching over 40s women to embrace their natural beauty and empower them to step out into the world with confidence. Robbie is a sports therapist who has operated her home business for the past 33 years and a passionate charity advocate since her 22-year-old son died of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma seven years ago. Their passion and drive was beautifully summed-up by Suzi, who said,“I am hoping to inspire women to stop paying attention to their age number, and be fearless about making changes in their lives, and to celebrate their life experiences and knowledge.” Across all industries, women like Suzi and Robbie are galvanising women to speak out about the ageism that they’ve faced in their own industries and embody what it means to be a modern woman who if fearless, can accomplish anything, at any age. So, what’s your number and what’s your story? 13

How a Juliet treatment helped me find relief With Sally, patient of Dr Andrew Cary, highly respected and loved women’s health consultant, specialising in gynaecology, obstetrics and IVF for more than 24 years

t 56-years-old I was one of the 400,000 Australian women living with the uncomfortable symptoms of vaginal atrophy. Though I enjoyed an active life I was on HRT for various menopausal symptoms: night sweats, insomnia, reduced sexual drive and vaginal dryness. My symptoms were improving on HRT, but I was still experiencing light bladder leakage and my vaginal mucosa was persistently dry. This is when I decided to look for help. I had been searching for an answer when Dr Cary’s rooms said they were trialling a new laser treatment, which could help improve my symptoms. I reviewed the comments and experiences of other women from the Juliet website and discovered Dr Cary was the only obstetrician gynaecologist on the Gold Coast that offers the Juliet treatment, so

There wasn’t any preparation required and no downtime after the procedure. It was discreet and painless – there wasn’t anything to be worried about!

I decided to proceed. After a relaxed consultation and review of my recent pap smear, the treatment was performed. There wasn’t any preparation required and no downtime after the procedure. It was discreet and painless –

there wasn’t anything to be worried about! The treatment took around 20 minutes and because no anaesthetic was required, it was performed in Dr Cary’s clinic in Benowa. Generally, only one treatment is required to achieve results and, as I mentioned, there wasn’t any recovery time needed (apart from avoiding sexual activity for 72 hours). I am now eight months post procedure and have been ecstatic about the results. My light bladder leakage (after 3 vaginal deliveries) has been corrected. My poor vaginal lubrication has dramatically improved, and has continued to improve, with other benefits of improved muscular elasticity and tone. Dr Cary explained that this treatment isn’t just suitable for the likes of me though. Juliet laser therapy is safe and effective for all women, including women with a history of breast cancer who are unable to use hormone treatments. Juliet is also effective for younger women with light bladder leakage from natural childbirth or high-impact sport. I wouldn’t hesitate to share this with my girlfriends and go back for further treatments if I needed to. Thanks to Dr Cary and his lovely team, I felt supported and informed the whole way through. There isn’t any reason to suffer in silence ladies, reach out to him today and see what Dr Cary can do for you. Cellulaze is the only permanent cellulite reduction treatment in the world. The heat and light of laser is used to sever the collagen tethers that hold down the skin into the fat layer causing the ‘dimpling’ effect of cellulite. This procedure also results in skin tightening because the skin lays down new collagen (collagenesis) resulting in a smoother, tighter appearance. Results from Cellulaze take about 4-6 months and achieve a permanent improvement. Powershape RF- smooths and tightens the skin improving the skin texture and appearance using both radio-frequency and laser. Powershape is a treatment that is done weekly over a period of about six weeks. Cellulite Clinics Australia aims to work with you to build better body confidence. GET IT I SUCCESS

I said

YES!

Deputy General Manager of the GCCEC, Raelene Barry, shares with us why she isn’t afraid to say yes!

s a young teenager, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I never hesitated. Not even for a moment. I was going to be the first female reporter on 60 Minutes. For a minute, I thought it might even be possible until the brilliant journalist, Jana Wendt, beat me to it. Damn. Mildly devastated but undaunted, I set off on an overseas adventure, exploring South East Asia, India and Nepal. I trekked the Himalayas, explored the Taj Mahal and got lost in Kathmandu. The people I met, the experiences I had and the lessons I learned stay with me until this day. I returned home; elated, inspired and quite frankly – broke! My parents had moved from Brisbane to the Gold Coast after I had finished high school and despite firmly stating that I would never move ‘down there’, I surrendered, never expecting to stay. Well, that was 33 years ago and here I am. With my backpack barely unpacked, the first of many amazing career opportunities landed in my lap. I was offered a temp role at the Gold Coast’s new casino, which hadn’t even opened yet. I replied with a single word, which would ultimately become my career mantra. YES! My job was to do anything that needed to be done and I felt very confident there wasn’t anything I couldn’t do. The privilege to work and grow in one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic properties was a gift. As an eager young woman wanting to find her place in the world, I had landed in an industry that offered – and continues to offer – so much. Jupiter’s Casino – now The Star Casino – was a mini city. With over 2,500 employees it was a microcosm of society with so many opportunities just waiting for me to say yes! I took to responsibility like a duck to water and revelled in whatever came my way. I was promoted every five or six years to new roles with new challenges and new things to learn. January 2019

Gold Coast icon was starting to take shape right next door to the casino: the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. General Manager of the GCCEC, Adrienne Readings, who was a part of the design and continues to lead the centre to this day, personally sought me out and offered me an opportunity. What else could I do but say YES! Those early days were tough. It was a huge test of my professional skills, experience and personal resilience. I sometimes longed for my old role, however, you don’t grow if you don’t lean in and push through. And I’m so very glad I did. Fast forward fifteen incredible years and here I am, Deputy General Manager of this Gold Coast icon. The GCCEC is so much more than a ‘job’. The passion and care I have for the business and most especially, the people, is so strong. I firmly believe that we have to make the best of every day and in this wild, crazy, never-dull industry that is now part of my DNA, taking care of our people is without doubt my overarching purpose. We love the Gold Coast and we are so very proud that our passion and commitment has delivered $300 million in the last 12 months to the local economy. And believe me, the passion isn’t waning. One of my biggest New Years wishes is that we get to expand our building so that we can welcome new business and welcome back the clients that have outgrown our space. Growth means life in every way! So as I kick off 2019, I am grateful for the journey I have taken and the stories, experiences, lessons and people that have brought me to where I am today. And for every opportunity I have been able to say YES to! I am thinking one of my future opportunities may be a book…and you’d better believe I will say YES to that too!

One of the toughest, yet most satisfying challenges came when the casino offered me the opportunity to study for an MBA. I was intimidated yet gratified and let me tell you, it wasn’t easy. Working full-time and studying full-time is not for the faint-hearted and the lessons I learned along the way run deep. There were some obstacles along that road and there was a time where the demands were just too great and it brought me to my knees. But it made me stronger and my graduation ceremony was a poignant moment in my life. In the process, an opportunity that in time would reveal itself to be one of my most satisfying professional and personal experiences, presented itself: a senior HR role. I had one word. YES! It wasn’t easy and that time really taught me to get ‘comfortable’ with tough conversations. I learnt to deal with the most difficult people issues with integrity, kindness and respect. That time also helped me realise that my passion for people and making a difference was very real and very valuable and as the years unfolded it became obvious that it was integral to my purpose. During this time, I watched with wonder as the next

There were some obstacles along that road and there was a time where the demands were just too great and it brought me to my knees.

ways to thrive at work

IN 2019

ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT. Struggling through on your own can make the job of deciding what to do especially difficult. Seek the wise council of people you trust and respect. Leverage your networks to tap into the information or guidance you need to achieve the changes you want to.

Make your career shine in 2019 with Karen Gately, founder of Corporate Dojo and author of The People Manager’s Toolkit

If you’re unsure who to call on, just start somewhere. Talk to friends about who they may know that can help you. For example, if you’ve always dreamed of doing a particular job but have no idea where to start to make that happen, look for people working in that industry. LinkedIn and other social media platforms are another great way to find people you can reach out to for advice.

Water safety, it’s a big issue for parents!

o, you’re having a tough year at work! Are there times when you wish you were anywhere other than at work? Do you fear losing your sanity if you have to work another day with some of the people that you do? Or maybe you’re just bored and find even the thought of turning up to do your job utterly tedious. Regardless of why you are finding life at work hard, take comfort in the fact your future is ultimately in your own hands. While you may not be able to control other people or many circumstances, there are six ways you can ensure 2019 is a great year as far as work goes: COMMIT. Choose to make 2019 your best career year yet. The simple reality is if you want to thrive at work you need to do more than just talk about it. Wishing, wanting, hoping and praying rarely leads to the outcomes we want. It’s up to us to make change happen. Decide whether you will stay with your organisation or move on to new opportunities. Once you’ve made your decision, choose to commit fully. A word of caution however; staying in an unhealthy environment is not a wise choice to make. If you’re experiencing bullying or other types of disrespectful behaviour that undermine your wellbeing, it’s definitely time to speak up or move on.

January 2019

HAVE GOALS. Feeling as though we are moving toward meaningful outcomes is important to most people’s ability to maintain resilience and focus when working through change.

BE COURAGEOUS. While it may seem that you have little choice but to stay and tolerate your circumstances, have the courage to at least challenge that thinking. Be careful not to allow limiting beliefs or unfounded assumptions to stop you from exploring new and better work options. Having that difficult conversation with your manager or colleague for example, just might make enough of a difference to improve how you feel about your job. Choosing to believe you can learn the skills needed to do your dream job, might be all it takes to find the courage to step forward and give it a go. FACE REALITY. The sooner you face the truth of your circumstances the sooner you will be in a position to make the decisions and take the actions you need to. Being in denial only delays the inevitable. While it may for example feel easier to tolerate your bosses bullying behaviour than to find a new job, the reality is you will never thrive at work if you feel mistreated, disrespected or undervalued. 20

Break long term goals down into smaller steps that you can check off the list as you achieve them. For example, if your goal is to find a new job but you lack confidence, set yourself the smaller goals of updating your resume, reaching out to recruitment consultants, attending a seminar that will give you useful information or insight and finding someone to help you write great job applications and prepare well for the interviews. CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE AND ACTIONS. While you may feel hard done by or mistreated, being grumpy in ‘retaliation’ is unlikely to benefit you in anyway. Avoid the all too common mistake of hoping a bit of ‘poor me’ drama will do anything to change your circumstances. Going down that path can in fact work against you as people inevitably begin to see you as a part of the problem. While you may not have all of the answers to your problems right now, choose to believe that you are capable of finding them. Most importantly choose to have self-respect and want a better reality for you. Then be willing to take the sometimes-courageous steps needed to bring about change.

GET IT I MONEY

Get financially fit in 2019 Your 2019 resolutions may involve health and fitness, but what about achieving healthier finances? Les McGuire ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial, shares a personal experience and teaches us how we can shape up our financial situation n 2004, I was 28 and opened two new large beauty salons in Brisbane. I had 37 staff working for me and business was financially strong. I was offered and accepted a chief executive position at a large specialist medical company. I was spending time overseas, in different states, growing their business and relied on others to run the salons. However, this was when things started to deteriorate. I was at Sydney airport, about to fly out to Italy on a business trip. A business development manager from a cosmetic supplier called out to me at the airport and said, “Hey Les, are you ok?” I replied, “Yes, why?” Well what a shock, unbeknown to me, accounts hadn’t been paid for about 120 days and I went into melt down mode. Well the story got worse, I cancelled my flight to Italy, went to Brisbane and

the walls started caving in. It turned out that internally some key staff were acting inappropriately with the money and stock was going missing. At the end of the dilemma I had lost over 1.6 million dollars. The next chapter would shape my future. I was devastated, having worked hard building up assets from a young age and now they were nearly all gone except for the family home, which I once owned outright and now had $800,000 in debt secured against it. I shed some tears and decided I wasn’t going to be beaten. I worked out a strict budget, calculated necessary expenses and started saving money each week, no matter how little. I have worked tirelessly over the past 12 years to be in a stronger financial position now. This wasn’t easy, nothing comes without resilience, sheer determination and some frustration along the way.

Many people find it hard to see a positive future when financially struggling, I did for a while until my fight or flight kicked in. My challenge to everyone is be prepared to change. A positive future can be had for all if we control our spending and limit the discretionary items. We need to take the time to research and find alternatives to ensure we are more financially fit and personally happy. But discipline is most important of all, be prepared to say no to some of the finer things (at least in the short term) and enjoy a better financially fit future.

GET IT I TRAVEL

Sarah Blinco on 2019’s healthy holiday options that mean you will come home feeling refreshed and inspired nce upon a time, a vacation meant drinks, lots of food, tours and shopping. Recently however, there’s been a shift in the reasons many of us choose to get away – we want to switch off from the pressures of modern-day life. The new kind of break, the one that will continue to rise as one of the most sought-after in 2019, is the ‘wellness escape’; an enriching life experience, where we return home feeling great about ourselves. Wellness has become a booming industry, evidenced by the fact Lonely Planet has just published a gorgeous hard-cover guide on the topic, presenting the breadth of offerings around the world that include everything from Yoga retreats in India and meditation in Ibiza, to fitness festivals set in the English countryside, Italian creativity workshops, and health spas on our own doorstep here in Queensland. Whether you’re signing-up for a healthspecific holiday or not, here’s how to make the most of your travel this year – reduce worry, and enhance your personal experience:

Actively engage with the locals

You don’t need a gym on hand to be active. You can of course, travel to a destination specifically to participate in Yoga or fitness activity. But, you can also make the most of services like meetup. com to find running clubs, classes, cycling groups or hobbyists who enjoy things you do in the area you’re planning to holiday. Joining active meet-ups during your holiday has two advantages – you’ll be energised physically and mentally, while meeting locals and learning about the destination.

Walk it out

Walking tours are on offer in most destinations, highlighting famous, colourful and interesting landmarks and history. Most options are either free or low-cost, run by locals who know their backyard and are keen to share insidersecrets with you. It’s a healthy option for getting to know a place and enjoying incidental exercise. Get started by Googling ‘walking tours’ (or variations like ‘quirky walking tours’, ‘Instagram walking tours’ or ‘insider secret walking tours’) in your destination of choice. January 2019

Well

travelled “

A popular trend in travel is ‘creative tourism’, which means more of us are using our breaks to engage in inspired activity, like writing a book, photography or blogging.

22

Unleash your inner creative

A popular trend in travel is ‘creative tourism’, which means more of us are using our breaks to engage in inspired activity, like writing a book, photography or blogging. Creative-specific trips can be arranged too. That is, more travellers are choosing holiday destinations based on what is available to them there, in terms of art, cooking, writing, language and even fashion courses that are scheduled for the imaginative globe trekker.

Voluntourism helps the world and feeds the soul. Do your research before you go though, to ensure your efforts are genuinely supporting the people or animals you intend to help.

Turn off the tech

The ultimate healthy holiday option is to break-up with your tech. Set boundaries for when computers, phones and tablets should be put away. For example, within two hours of bedtime; or not switched on first thing in the morning for at least an hour. If you find you’re too tempted, search for destinations specifically promoting themselves as a ‘no-phone zone’. That’s now a thing, because so many of us have recognised despite the desire to do so, we have trouble detaching from our devices.

Give to receive

There’s no better way to feel better about yourself and the world, than by giving back. A friend of mine, Amy, truly inspired me by sharing her stories from Thailand when she chose to dedicate holiday time to volunteering at an animal welfare centre. Similarly, I have friends who have gone to Santorini not for the sunset, but to help in donkey sanctuaries; South Africa to take care of wildlife; and to the Caribbean, supporting sustainability projects targeting the redevelopment of industries shattered by natural disasters. 23

Your experience can be impulsive though, like at Whistler Village in Canada, where if you have a spare few hours you can offer to walk shelter dogs housed near the resort. Voluntourism helps the world and feeds the soul. Do your research before you go though, to ensure your efforts are genuinely supporting the people or animals you intend to help. There are opportunities to contribute, create and recalibrate everywhere. All you need to do is seek them. Take a break this year for your mind, body and spirit. It’s all winwin and makes for a far more fulfilling story than any Facebook post possibly can. January 2019

When you think you’ve found 'The One,' you’re going to do all you can to make sure they’re really it. Sometimes, that can lead to over-analysing and overthinking. When you’re overthinking in a relationship, nothing good ever really comes out of it. Are you spending too much time deciding what to text? If you ever spend a long time going back and forth with yourself over what you’re going to text them or decoding messages, you might be overthinking things. So, take your time getting to know them by talking to them and don’t let texts control your day. Are you always asking others for advice? The tendency to overthink usually comes from a place of previous hurt. When you’ve been hurt in a previous relationship it makes it harder to trust what’s right in front of you. This behaviour harms Are you guilty of overthinking your relationships because “it relationship? If you find yourself asking for advice constantly take time to pause and evaluate how you feel, maybe things aren’t as bad as you think. Do you always have a ‘what if’ to worry about? There are two types of people who overthink a relationship, one is the controller personality that pretty much overthinks everything. They want to prepare for the negative and tend to overthink. The other is the individual who leans towards insecurity. When you’re insecure, your mind will always take you to the negative side of a situation. Regardless of which type you tend to be, overthinkers can instantly find alternative possibilities to reality. In other words, you’ve probably thought of all the different kind of 'What If' scenarios you can possibly think of. If you want to break out of the cycle, slow down and become aware of how often you’re turning assumptions into facts about your relationship. It’s important to use that time to evaluate both what can go wrong and what can also go really right. You don’t trust what’s happening in the present Certain individuals who overthink don’t typically trust that what they see, and experience is the whole truth. There’s always this

underlying anxiety and questioning about whether your partner really wants you like they say they do. If you stay grounded in the present, you will reduce the anxiety and tendency to allow your thoughts to spiral. Stay present in the moment, rather than dwelling on the possibility of negative outcomes. Are you constantly thinking of the future? If you’re continually worrying about what your relationship will be like two months from now, you may be overthinking your relationship. Focus on the present instead of always thinking about what the future holds and the end goal of the relationship, take time to enjoy whatever phase you’re in. Are you always wondering what your partner thinks of you? Instead of worrying so much about what your partner is or isn’t thinking about you, fall back in love with yourself. Make peace with who you are and what you bring to the relationship. When you’re at peace with yourself, you’re more likely to realise which thoughts are just thoughts and which ones are fact. Are you always questioning what your partner means? If your partner speaks in generalities it can leave you wondering what they specifically meant. For instance, you might ask them how they feel about you and they respond with a,“You know how I feel.” To alleviate any concerns, ask your partner for clarification. You can go down a spiralling rabbit hole if you allow your mind to wander into unknown territory. Being forthcoming with the truth is one of the best ways to avoid misunderstandings. If they say,“let’s keep things casual’ and you don’t know what the definition of that is, ask for clarification. What casual means to them can be completely different with what casual means to you. Understand that overthinking your relationship just happens, especially when you really like someone, and you want it to work out. But if you take a step back and think about it, over-analysing everything is neither fun nor healthy. It may be hard to slow down and just let things happen as they come, but it may be worth it in the end.

the example attached, their calendar age is 38 years old but physically they are 36. This is calculated by reading your skeletal muscle mass, fat mass and visceral fat level (the amount of fat around your organs). The reason these metrics matter is we know that as you age you lose muscle mass and start to decline in function and the fat you carry around your organs is the fat most likely to cause the diseases of lifestyle like Diabetes, Cancers, Heart Disease and Alzheimer’s. How to improve your Bio-Age: Give that muscle mass plays a significant role in your score, keeping and or building muscle should be a priority. Lifting weights is the best recipe and lifting light weights won't do it. Things like yoga and Pilates are very good for you but won't move the needle here. The other thing that will decrease your muscle mass fast is crash dieting and under eating significantly. People who reduce their calories by large amounts are more likely to lose muscle mass and once lost it is very difficult to regain. Reducing Visceral fat is the next most important. The three things that drive visceral fat up are consistent or excessive alcohol consumption, eating foods with high sugar or fructose content and overeating carbohydrates daily. Your liver can only store 120 grams of carbohydrate and if you overflow it, the excess is turned to fat that is stored around your organs. Even small decreases in fat around your organs can help your health in significant ways. version ofwould YOU! io Impedance Scanners have become very popular recently, with many people wanting more information than just what the scales give you. There are many options, from ones you can pop in your bathroom to the $15,000 set we have at Vision. What you do get with the varying price range is a wide variance in the accuracy of the measurement. There are two machines that lead the market that I am aware of, both of which have very high levels of accuracy. The InBody Scanner and the Evolt360 use similar technologies and give you more than just your weight. How they work: The simple reason they are able to give accurate readings is they send two different pulses (that you cannot feel) through your body. The best machines have two touch points on the feet and hands. These impulses travel through your body at different speeds depending on the makeup of your body. From this, they are able to tell what is muscle, fat and everything else. The gold standard with biometric measurements is the DEXA Scan. But not even the DEXA gives a perfect reading. Accuracy: The machines are really good at telling how much fat you have on your body in kilos. What they are not as good at is telling you how much muscle you have. The reason is each machine cannot tell the difference between hydrated and dehydrated muscle. Muscle can be up to 75% water, so there can be wide differences in results. Because this is also used to calculate body fat percentage, I don’t pay much attention to that metric. However, if you are able to keep hydration at the same levels for each scan you have a better chance of getting the whole picture. Keep in mind Let that each carbohydrate yourbest body us gram helpofyou find the stores (can be up to 600g of carbs), you will also hold an extra 3 grams of water. So, if you scan after a high carb meal or after not eating carbs #RedefineYOU for a while you will get a big difference. If you know how to account for this by reading the body water and calculating how that difference Studio affects your muscle mass,Bundall you can see a lot. Reset your body and make 2019 your healthiest year yet with these ketoapproved culinary delights!

Keto is the latest buzzword in health and food and it’s a fantastic way to reset your body after a busy festive season! Transition away from carbohydrate dependency and weight-loss frustrations into the world of metabolic flexibility, where you will reprogram your metabolism to use fat for fuel. It’s all about ditching processed grains, sugars, and refined vegetable oils in favour of nutrient-dense, high-fat foods. This is an edited extract from The Keto Reset Diet Cookbook by Mark Sisson published by Hardie Grant Books $29.99 and is available in stores nationally. Photographer: Andrew Purcell

Pan-Seared Salmon with Quick Hollandaise and Crispy Capers SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS • 4 skin-on salmon fillets (110 g each) • ¾ teaspoon Cajun Seasoning • ¼ teaspoon sea salt

• 2 tablespoons avocado oil • 2 tablespoons capers, drained • Hollandaise

DIRECTIONS Pat the salmon fillets with a clean kitchen towel and check for bones. Season the flesh side with the Cajun seasoning and salt. Pour the avocado oil into the bottom of a skillet large enough to hold the salmon. Swirl the skillet to coat the bottom. Add the salmon to the COLD skillet skin side up. Set the skillet over medium-high heat and sear the salmon for 3 minutes without disturbing. (This is a good time to start the hollandaise sauce if you haven’t already.) Gently lift one corner of the salmon to check it; sear for 1 more minute if it doesn’t release easily from the pan. Use a spatula to flip the salmon and reduce the heat to medium. Cook uncovered until just barely cooked through, another 4 to 5 minutes. Remove to a plate. Add the drained capers to the pan, taking care in case they spatter. Stir-fry them for about 90 seconds. Remove from the heat. Plate the salmon and top each fillet with a generous dollop of the hollandaise. Sprinkle the crispy capers on top. Serve immediately. 31

Meatza Pizza Stuffed Peppers SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS • 2 teaspoons pork lard or fat of your choice • ½ small onion, diced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 220 g ground beef • 220 g fresh Italian sausage links (sweet or hot), casings removed • ½ teaspoon dried oregano • ½ teaspoon sea salt

January 2019

• ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • 2 large bell peppers, any colour • 220 g fresh mozzarella cheese, shredded or thinly sliced • ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese • 8 thin pepperoni slices

DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 220°C. In a skillet, heat the lard over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until just soft, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté for 1 minute more. Crumble in the beef and sausage. Stir in the oregano, salt, and black pepper. Cook, using a fork or meat chopper to break up the meat, until almost no pink remains, about 6 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste and continue to cook until no pink remains. Taste and adjust the salt and pepper. Halve the bell peppers lengthwise, through the stem. Cut out the ribs and seeds without puncturing the pepper. Place the peppers in a single layer in a baking dish that fits them snugly enough that they do not roll around. If you want the peppers to be very soft in the final product, place them in the hot oven for 5 minutes. Otherwise, proceed to the next step. Divide the mozzarella into 8 equal portions. Fill each half pepper halfway with the meat mixture. Top with half the mozzarella. Fill the rest of the way with meat. Top with the remaining mozzarella, the Parmesan, and 2 pepperoni slices per pepper. (If you have meat mixture left over, save it for tomorrow’s breakfast omelette!) 6. Bake the peppers until they are soft and the cheese is bubbly, about 20 minutes. (Optional: Heat the broiler to low and broil for 1 to 2 minutes to brown the top further.) Remove from the oven and serve hot.

BaconWrapped Chicken Thighs SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS • 3 tablespoons butter or ghee, melted, or fat of choice • ½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar • 1 teaspoon mustard powder • ½ teaspoon chili powder • ¼ teaspoon sea salt • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper • 6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs • 6 slices sugar-free bacon

DIRECTIONS In a medium bowl, combine the melted butter, apple cider vinegar, and all the spices. Trim any excess fat from the chicken thighs and add the thighs to the bowl, tossing to coat them with the butter mixture. Allow it to sit for about 20 minutes, tossing once or twice. Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Lay out a piece of bacon on a cutting board. Place a chicken thigh at one end of the bacon slice and roll it up so the bacon winds around the chicken, covering as much of the chicken thigh as possible. (Yes, this is a little messy!) Secure the loose end with a toothpick, or tuck the 33

end under the wrapped bacon. Repeat for the rest of the bacon and chicken thighs. Heat a cast-iron or other ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Place the baconwrapped chicken thighs in a single layer in the hot skillet. Cook until the bacon is crispy on one side, 3 to 4 minutes. Flip and cook on the second side for an additional 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer the skillet to the oven and roast until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 75°C, about 10 minutes for smaller thighs or 15 minutes for larger thighs. Remove the chicken from the oven and allow it to rest for a few minutes before serving. January 2019

AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19

Find your zen Aquarian. This month continues to lead you into an introverted state; perfect for meditation, yoga and spiritual enlightenment. PISCES February 19 – March 20

Hey there Pisces, this month things are quiet again. Uranus sits in your sign but is not aligned strongly. Expect doors to open, new clients to walk in or new job opportunities in general. There are some things to watch out for this month though, because you have the Sun, Mercury and Venus all square Aries. GEMINI May 21 – June 21

It’s a quiet start to the year for you Gemini. Normally you are quite the social chatterbox, but you may find yourself wanting to pull back a bit this month. It can mean you will have plenty of energy, but you may not know what to do with it all. LEO July 22 – August 23

Leo, 2019 is all about you! VIRGO August 23 - September 22

Last year’s emphasis on career has had your head down and your inner child on ice, but the sun is out and so are the Virgos. This month brings you a new lease on life and plenty of excitement. Don’t be too hard on yourself if everyone else is buckling down and you can’t seem to get your head in the game: life is about balance.

LIBRA September 22 – October 23

Libra, this month there is a lot of activity happening in that head of yours. Most of your focus will feel drawn to the home front, but miscommunication could be a problem due to the confusing energy that is surrounding Libra this month; so be mindful not to let yourself get too dictorial. Inner creative juices will be flowing so this is a perfect time to redecorate or renovate your home.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22

January brings us vivacious, lively and enthusiastic Scorpios.Your energy this month is on fire! You have expanded willpower and drive to achieve everything all at once!
