The inhabitants are proud of the famous “Round tower fort”, which was built in the 17th century, and of its Souq, which on Fridays becomes a place for cattle auctions. It is also well known for costly hand carved “Khanjars” (dagger) and silver jewellery. After visiting the souq and the fort, proceed to Al Hamra, a picturesque old village reminding of Yemenite architecture and unto the beautiful rocky village of Misfat al Abriyyin. The mountain village is set amidst stunning landscape and has hardly changed over the years. We will have lunch at a local restaurant. Then onto Bahla which is well known for its pottery. Here one can still admire the skill of the pot making. Next visit is Jabrin fort, where you will find one of the most magnificent forts of Oman with its painted ceiling, dungeons, and hidden passages. Saving lives It only takes a couple of minutes to register to donate your organs says Gold Coaster Brett Bullock, a twice kidney transplant recipient. See how he’s made a difference to others facing his circumstances

Tell us about Save Lives Donate Organs (SLDO)? How did it start? Save Lives Donate Organs (SLDO) is a not-for-profit Gold Coast-based charity founded in 2013. SLDO exists to raise awareness of organ donation and to support those suffering from disease, which may lead to organ failure or transplant. It is focused on promoting and facilitating a greater rate of organ donation and increasing the public and social benefit derived from organ donation in Australia. Funds raised through SLDO are used to financially support people, their families and other organisations involved in the organ donation and transplant process. What is your story? What were your circumstances? When I was 21 years old, I fell ill and began going blind. I was in hospital for around three months. During this time, it was determined that I was suffering from chronic renal failure. After a year of dialysis I received my first transplant – it was a kidney provided by my mother. This transplant unfortunately failed after five years. I had to go back on dialysis and was doing this three days a week for five-and-a-half hours each time at Robina Hospital. Twelve months later, I was out at dinner with my fiancé, Amy Duke, and her family when I received a phone call from my nephrologist. He told me what I had been waiting to hear for 12 months – that a kidney was ready for me. That same evening, Amy and I drove to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and I underwent a successful kidney transplant. Here I am today! Why did you need two kidney transplants? I had been a very healthy and fit person until I was diagnosed with an aggressive case of IGA Nephritis, an Auto Immune Disease, which had attacked my kidneys and caused them to deteriorate rapidly. After 12 months of dialysis, I received the first live donor transplant off my mother that lasted five years. Unfortunately a combination of rejection and the IGA Nephritis caused the first transplant to fail, requiring me to have a second transplant. Why is organ donation important? I believe organ donation is important due to the significant impact it has on people in need of an organ transplant, like myself not too long ago. The fact that one organ and tissue donor can save the lives of up to 10 people illustrates the power and positive outcomes of organ donation. I personally have organ donation to thank – otherwise there June 2016

is no way I would be here today or have achieved half of the things that I have. Needing an organ transplant is a life or death situation. Organ and tissue transplants are needed now more than ever in Australia. At any one time, there are thousands of Australian adults and even children waiting for a transplant on the official waiting list. I was one of these people and from personal experience, I can confidently say the wait is the worst part of the process. How can people help? What do they need to do to donate? We believe the wider community that supports organ donation can assist this cause through registering their decision about becoming an organ and tissue donor on the Australian Organ Donor Register. This is the only register in Australia for people to record their decision. We strongly encourage people who register to discuss their decision to be an organ donor with their family and close friends. Public donations are another way in which people can support SLDO’s cause. People eager to donate are encouraged to contact us either through our website or info@sldo.com.au. Tell us about the grant/funding scheme? What does it mean for people? SLDO’s new funding program, SLDO|Assist, was announced and launched at this year’s first fundraising event. We have developed SLDO|Assist in order to provide financial support to patients who are currently awaiting an organ transplant or in the process of being treated for a disease that will require an organ transplant and are suffering financial duress. We aim to deliver this program by partnering with hospitals to locate patients who may benefit most from SLDO’s financial assistance. Applicants that believe they meet the relevant criteria are encouraged to complete and lodge SLDO’s Financial Assistance Application Form which is available on our website (sldo. com.au). How many people have you helped? So far, SLDO has helped thousands of local Gold Coasters. Last year, we distributed hundreds of Winter Warmer Packs to renal dialysis patients at Gold Coast University and Robina Hospital to make their cold winter a little more bearable. We have also educated more than 2000 Gold Coast high school students on the benefits of organ donation with double lung transplant recipient Cohen Ashton. 10

How to

break up

with money What’s your relationship with money like? Money expert Melissa Browne says you actually can’t have a relationship with it

’m not sure about you, but a lot of people I know don’t have a great relationship with money. If anything, it’s a toxic relationship and if money was a bad boyfriend (or girlfriend) then we would quickly kick it to the curb. Now I appreciate that’s easier said than done. After all, you can spend a lifetime having a better relationship with food and money can have an even bigger emotional pull. The thing is, you actually can’t have a relationship with money. It’s an inanimate object and should simply be a helpful tool to help us live the life we want. But most of us don’t see it that way and we’ve developed an unhealthy relationship that’s turning, if we’re completely honest, a little bit toxic. That’s why I think we need to break up with money. It’s not easy but here are my top tips to help you do just that. 1. Do a financial detox. If you’re going to break up with someone you need space. You need to unfollow them on social media and start to separate from each other’s lives. It’s no different with money. In order to emotionally separate from money a great idea is to start with a financial detox, which is simply 30 days of buying nothing new or non-essential. And, no, shoes are not essential. 2. Understand how you’re spending. If you’re in a bad relationship you need to face what’s going on. It’s the same with money. After your financial detox, track your spending using one of the many cloud-based solutions available (a simple free tool is on the Money Smart website) so you can start tracing where your money is going. 3. Work out your goals. At some point, a couple will work out together where their relationship is heading. In order to start viewing money as simply a tool again, it’s important to work out what your goals are in life. I appreciate it’s tougher to look any further than three years ahead, but I think three-year and 12-month goals are essential. June 2016

4. Understand your values. In order to transfer your feelings from money on to something really worthwhile, make a list of what you value in life. Maybe it’s freedom, family, security, significance or loyalty. Once you’ve worked out your values, then take a look at your goals and work out if they fit with your values. If they don’t, make adjustments until they do. 5. Work out a plan. Sometimes goals and values seem so far removed from our current day that it’s easier to buy a cocktail and continue as you are. Instead, work out how much money it would take to reach that plan and how long it would take. So if your goal means you need $10,000 in 12 months’ time you’ll need to save $200 a week. 6. Start to become a conscious consumer. Working out a plan is great but unless you’re monitoring how you’re going, it’s too easy to go off track. Take time every month to check how you’re going, see if you’re on track and make any necessary adjustments. It’s always easy to lose a kilo that sneaks on rather than dealing with 20kg. 7. Remove yourself from temptation. I don’t have chocolate in the house because I have absolutely no willpower. Sure I could decide I want to get tougher and purposely keep it in the house but I’d be beating myself up daily because I know I’d eat it. It’s the same with money. ax planning should be important to any small business because it can help you identify ways to reduce your tax, as well as help plan your cash flow and make sure you do not have any nasty surprises. So every year all of our clients receive a complimentary newsletter that includes tax planning tips and tricks to help do this. Being only a few weeks before the June 30 hits prompts many questions around minimising tax. A regular question we get asked at Wallace and Partners Accountants and Advisors is: Should I buy a new car to save tax? The car dealers would certainly be happy with a resounding yes to that question. No one likes paying tax, but we have to remember that saving tax can come with a cash flow burden – you have to spend the cash to save the tax. If we use the example of a car or ute used 100 per cent in business that costs $19,900, for a small business (until June 30, 2017) we can claim the entire $19,900 as a tax deduction in the year it is purchased. But we beware, you will not save $19,900 in tax. An average individual tax payer will save about $6865 in tax and a company $5671 in tax. In this example, we have spent nearly $20,000 to save between $5670 to $6865 in tax. If you don’t need it (or really, really want it) it’s not a great idea to spend your money just to get a tax deduction. As a general rule of thumb for every $100 you spend on tax deductible expenses, you will save $30 in tax. MYTH 1: If psychic mediums were real, it would be easy to find missing persons There are many real-life cases where psychics or mediums have helped find missing persons or solve murder cases, but generally speaking it doesn’t happen often. Having been involved in a few missing persons cases on a professional level, I can say it is not as simple as it sounds. The cases I have worked on were unsolved suspected abductions and murders of young girls from decades before. I was able to connect with the girls’ spirits and I was given impressions of different circumstances surrounding their deaths including locations, however, there are often dozens or even hundreds of different locations that may fit those impressions I had. MYTH 3: Psychic mediums can predict the future Psychics and mediums do not actually predict the future. What we can do is tune into energies connected to future events in people’s lives using our psychic senses to give insights into possible outcomes. Using tools such as tarot cards, palmistry and astrology combined with information that we gather through our psychic senses, we can often give insights into possible future events with some degree of accuracy. However, we can get it completely wrong and can misinterpret the information we receive. It is for this reason that we require acknowledgement from the client as to whether the information we are sharing resonates with them. It should be a perfect fit and even if it doesn’t make sense to us, it should make sense to them. The future is written in sand and can be altered.

MYTH 2: Psychic mediums can read minds Psychics and mediums do not and cannot read minds. They can tune into your individual energy field that contains information about your life, but they can’t read your mind or know what you’re thinking. We receive information through our psychic senses about the person we are connecting to and information comes through in bits and pieces. We may see images, hear brief noises, voices or words, get a glimpse of a smell or taste and/ or feel an energy shift in different parts of our body, which indicates a message. All this information has to be put together to make sense and it can be hard to relay what different things mean. The information can be about places, events or people related to their past, present or future.

The more people in your community the bigger the chance you have to grow your business. What is your number one tip for people going into business? Even if you are not sure of the direction of your business, start growing your network now. What does the next 12 months hold for you? Wow, what a question! Where do I start? My 12-month plan is huge. I can see my business exploding into a multi-milliondollar business, online courses and worldwide speaking gigs. I am thinking big and dreaming big. That’s the only way to succeed.

Kevin’s other secret to his success is the long hours he worked building Property Club to where it is today. Although he retired when he was 27, he still keeps his finger on the pulse and his drive to make a difference, keeps him coming into the office. Kevin’s love of property started when he was young. Inspired by a series of articles about how Australian millionaires achieved wealth, he noticed a property theme. “I kept coming back to property as a way to become wealthy,” he says.“Working three jobs ... Social Security, milk run and CMF (citizen’s military force), Kevin saved enough to buy his first property. He’s made mistakes – sometimes costly ones – but he takes everything he learns, passing it on to others. That was in the late ’50s. GROWTH STAGES Kathy Ashton Persistence to get over the bumps throughout her start-up journey is how Kathy came out the other side ready to ramp it up tarting a business from nothing, with little capital but a whole lot of drive and passion is exciting and scary all at the same time. But if you persist and get over the bumps that come up through the start-up journey, you get out the other side ready to ramp it up. That is where nutritional medicine practitioner Kathy Ashton is at today. She started her business Flourish Nutritional Medicine three years ago. As a nutritional medicine practitioner, she had been working in other people’s clinics for more than 10 years. Like all true entrepreneurial types, Kathy stepped out on her own to create something for herself. “There was so much I had to learn to get to this point,” Kathy says.“Things like techy and marketing stuff. “I am a clinician. I work with people to help them heal from diseases using food as medicine. Knowing how to set up a website or Facebook page was and is not my area of expertise. Very quickly I learnt I needed to engage experts to help with the areas I knew/know nothing about.” One of Kathy’s biggest lessons has been acknowledging that building a profile does not happen overnight.“ I’ve been working with a publicist and even after she told me it would take time, I still expected greater recognition sooner,” she says. “However, getting to the stage where you are in demand takes about two to three years. You have to put yourself out there – networking, writing articles and blogs, and starting small with speaking gigs. “I have now done enough speaking gigs I can ask to be paid. I invested in a video showcasing my speaking skills, a media kit and have built a following on Facebook – people know me. I have been consistent with my messages and have established I am excellent at what I do.” Now after laying the foundations, Kathy is taking the next step. “Having a solid base to launch from is vital – I’ve done that. I understand my ideal client better; so to grow, I am creating products that make it easy for them to make the decision to work with me,” she says. Kathy is now automating Flourish Nutritional Medicine so her great content gets into more hands so she can help more people. “Sometimes it is not about the big ticket items; it is about providing great products and services people can employ. My business is all about helping people heal; I do not want to make it hard for them to work with me,” she says. “Automating my programs means people still get access to my knowledge and help and it does not matter if they are in Melbourne, Madrid or Mars.” June 2016

Considering a self-managed super fund? ...Read this

It can be easy to neglect your superannuation, but it should be at the top of your priority list, says Renee Gamble

uperannuation. It’s one of those words many people don’t think about as a priority. After all, when you’re first starting work, and even into your 30s, retirement seems a long way off and superannuation is the last thing on your mind. You know money goes out of your account and ends up somewhere else but you’re not quite sure where. You may not understand how it works, it doesn’t allow you to buy things you’ve never been able to afford before and you can’t pay off the debt you’ve accumulated buying all those things. Primarily due to these reasons, more and more people have the desire to understand their superannuation, where it’s going and how it can be best utilised to benefit them when retirement does roll around, says Gold Coast self-managed super fund adviser Renee Gamble. “This desire has seen a huge increase in the number of people setting up their own superannuation funds and managing the money themselves,” says the BIS Cosgrove adviser.“While there are many positives to switching to a self-managed super fund - with choice, control and flexibility named as the major benefits - there are a few things people should understand.” Renee offers her top tips for those looking to learn more:

Do your research: Be clear on why you’re setting up a self-managed super fund. You are going to be more involved than you are with your current fund and you’ll need to invest time and resources into your new funds management and investment choices. Understand the responsibility: Be aware of what’s involved in running your own fund and the costs associated. There are a number of compliance hoops you have to jump through so make sure you’ve got all the necessary information. At a minimum, you’re required to provide financial statements, member statements and an income tax return for audit annually. It sounds tedious, but this can be outsourced to an adviser or accountant. Choose your provider wisely: There are a number of online providers offering free and or discounted super fund setups. Be mindful that these can sometimes come with conditions around the type of investments you can hold within the fund. Deviating from these can mean huge additional fees. Flexibility in investment choice is one of the main advantages of setting up your own fund so make sure you aren’t locked into a prescribed set of investment choices. Make good investment choices: If you wouldn’t commit your own money, why would you commit your super funds? Your investment choices will ultimately decide

what kind of retirement you will enjoy, so be discerning when choosing where your money is invested. It’s not your money, it’s your fund’s money: Don’t look at your super fund as an additional source of income.You can’t dip into it when cash flow gets tight. The sole purpose of your fund is to provide for your retirement and having the ability to access the bank account doesn’t mean you can. There are severe penalties for accessing your super before you can legally satisfy a condition of release. Make good use of the fund: There’s no point spending time and money setting up a fund and leaving it all sitting in a bank account. If you aren’t sure what you should be doing with your super fund money, get some professional help. Find a great adviser to work with: Just as doctors often have their own specialties, so to do advisers and accountants. Find a professional who specialises in self-managed super funds. Make sure they are someone you enjoy working with and who is happy to educate you on the running and ongoing management of your fund. Enjoy the ride: Most importantly, enjoy the fact that you are now responsible for your own retirement. Embrace the fact that you are in control of how it’s invested, celebrate the wins and learn from the losses.

The upshot of the O and P shots OMG, these procedures can help improve your life in ways you can only imagine. Oh boy! What is “O” shot? The term “O” shot was coined by two doctors in the US, Charlie Runnels and Sam Wood who developed a method of vaginal rejuvenation that helped to improve sexual experience. I suppose we could term this the “OMG” shot, because it really does improve the sensitivity and responsiveness in the vaginal anatomy. Many women find a desensitisation “down there”, occurring with age as the hormone profiles naturally change. Sometimes there is residual injury from childbirth. The end result is simply a reduced response to stimulation. The associated symptoms of bladderstress incontinence add to difficulties and the “OMG” shot is also useful in improving that element as well. Although the “shot” will not repair torn tissues, it does help to stimulate nerve endings and help to rejuvenate the vaginal tissue generally. This, with some stimulus to bladder floor muscles results in improvement for most people. The process involves two steps. Firstly, we draw your blood sample from a vein in your arm just like having a blood test. Then the sample is treated and centrifuged to produce plasma or serum. This serum is chock-full of stimulatory natural chemicals

called cytokines to stimulate tissue repair. The product is your own protein, so there is no risk of allergic reactions or rejections. Secondly, the product needs to be injected into the proper spot. Yes. That means an injection “down there”. But that is where it is needed. Powerful local anaesthetic creams allow this with a minimum of discomfort. Getting the right placement is important and our medical team is trained to do that. It takes some time, usually a few weeks before you start to feel changes occurring. You do not need to change any other medication given to you by your own GP. What is “P” shot? The “P” shot is the male version of the “OMG” shot. Maybe we should call it the “Oh boy” shot. Erectile dysfunction is a common issue with men as they age. We prepare the serum the same way as the “OMG” preparation. Remember, this is your own

tissue and so no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. But just like before, the placement of the injection is important and, yes, this one too is injected “down there”. Again though, local anaesthetic preparations allow for minimal discomfort. Typically the result will take a few weeks to be noticeable. With both the “OMG” and “Oh boy” shots, we make enough serum to allow for a second shot after a month to try to maximise the result. It is important to remember though that people are all very different and are not expected to all achieve the same result. For some it does not seem to work well at all. he hair is a barometer of the body’s health and although hair loss does not create a health problem, the physiological and psychological effects for any sufferer can be distressing. There are some signs you shouldn’t be concerned about and some that require more in-depth medical intervention. In recent times, it’s been reported that problems associated with hair and scalp have increased due to certain conditions. Diffuse hair loss is the most common problem. It presents as excessive hair loss from the entire scalp. The causes of this type of hair loss can be as simple as high fever, weight loss, an operation, pregnancy/child birth, stopping or changing the oral contraceptive, and medical or nutritional problems. Scarring alopecias such as alopecia areata and psoriasis are mainly caused by autoimmune problems which can be triggered by viral infections, vaccinations, trauma to the skin, stress, food substances and medications. Autoimmune problems worsen with the increase in estrogen levels (female hormone) too. Traction alopecia occurs when the hair has been under tension by styles such as braids or ponytails. The baldness often takes 2-3 years to become apparent and occurs around the hairline. Trichotillomania is the compulsive pulling out of one’s hair. Poorly defined areas in which there are many short hairs characterise this. The main cause associated with this condition is stress. Purchasing a property Have you brushed up on taxes, stamp duty and family law knowledge lately? Did you know these are areas where you can save money? urchasing a property is a significant investment and takes considerable time and energy. While most people are rightly focused on obtaining the best home loan, and searching for the right property to purchase, did you know there are some other critical areas that many people overlook, where you can save money? For example, are you buying your first property? If so, you might be eligible for a stamp or transfer duty concession. Concessions are available for first home buyers, or if you are purchasing a home or vacant land where you would like to build a new home. In regards to the “first home vacant land” concession, if the vacant land you want to build on is valued at under $400,000, you may qualify. It is such a beautiful and feminine shape and my style tricks for you are simple and easy. Bottom heavy, if you are not sure, usually means a smaller size on top and a bigger size on the bottom. Generally, you will have an amazing waist and this will be a defined part on your body … not your hips. I want you to focus on this part of your body and enhance it, so let’s get started. STYLE FILE TIPS – Triangle shape Create a waist. Keep colours darker from the waist down and have a party from the waist up to draw the eyeline up the body. A-line skirts and a wider leg pant that just whispers across the hip line without grabbing are best for this shape so they show off your best assets. Look for shorter fitted jackets; nothing that will end at the widest part of your body. Push up your sleeves to create a waistline and look for angles and waterfall jackets and tops to soften the edge. Then take the focus up the body with thrills and frills and statement jewels. Leading heel pain specialist and sports podiatrist Karl Lockett says:“Among the patients I see every day, more than half are suffering pain and injury not just with their feet, but also other parts of the body, from their knees, to their hips and backs. Bad decisions in their choice of footwear is frequently a contributing factor.” It is estimated that around 70 per cent of the population suffer from an over-pronating foot, where their foot rolls inwards excessively. Karl says this is worsened when wearing the wrong shoes. Whether you have an over-pronating foot or not, here are three bad shoe decisions Australians make when it comes to their footwear. HIGH HEELS: High heels are sexy and many women would never give them up, but the trade-off can be painful, putting pressure on your lower back and knees. Worse than that, they create tight calf muscles, which often leads to other issues. Along with blisters, bunions and possible nerve damage from pressure on toes, high heels can also cause an unsightly and painful bony deformity at the back of the heel called a heel spur – which can be permanent. Not so sexy after all. Recommendation: A heel height of 2-3 cm maximum is ideal. Be sure to stretch your calves for at least 30 seconds three times a day and don’t walk around in your high heels for any longer than three hours a day.

So, in typical Aussie spirit, weekly catchups are transformed into a relaxing game of bowls, lots of laughs and an ice-cold beer. “It’s something regular that we look forward to and all feel very lucky to have

formed such great friendships in the later part of our lives,” Bram says. Foods to correct your nutrition In a previous article, John Burchell explored our attitude towards foods and the choices we make around them. Here he extends that view In this article, I will give a brief insight into the way we can use foods consciously as part of our day-to-day health and how we can use food as preventative and corrective medicine. All plant-derived foods have potential health benefits, especially if consumed freshly harvested. Fish and marine plants fall into a similar category also. Our bodies utilise the nutrients from foods and these nutrients form the building blocks for pretty well all of our biological requirements. Over the past 30 years or so, there has been a significant increase in the availability and prescription of nutritional supplements. The question is often asked,“why should supplementation be necessary?”. Modern food technologies and growing techniques have changed foods from nutrition focused to quantity of yield focused.While feeding

the masses is essential, these modern food practices have, in many cases, reduced nutritional values and absorbability considerably. Diets high in processed and modified foods often result in nutritional deficiencies, resulting in the need to supplement.There are, of course, many wellresearched medicinal uses of high-concentration nutrient requirements that any amount of food cannot deliver in the time required, again making supplementation necessary. In exploring the concept of foods for corrective nutrition, the quality and source of foods must be considered and all the foods I discuss are based on them being in their naturally occurring non-modified forms. Protein is perhaps the most important food for overall health. Plant-based proteins are considered a more easily absorbed source than animal proteins, and animal sources have

less compatible fat forms and have levels of cholesterol and hormones that plants don’t. The process of digesting meats also creates undesirable metabolic by-products, especially detrimental forms of acids. Tissue acidity is one of the greatest concerns in long-term health problems. For vegetarians, the best sources are legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds. While tuna is considered the richest source of protein, the highest vegetable sources are beans, pepitas, sunflower seeds, almonds, cashews, tahini and chickpeas. Meat is a good food source, but consuming meat daily is not ideal. I am often asked how we get calcium if we don’t have dairy produce. The truth is that milk in its processed/commercial forms has poor availability of absorbable calcium. Excellent food sources are tahini, tofu, eggs, carob, nuts, seeds (especially sunflower), figs, broccoli and chic peas.

Are you being seen but not heard? robably the most common indication of a hearing loss is frequent requests for repetition. Many people who do this still feel that their hearing is fine. This is particularly noticeable when the person is talking to you from behind or from another room. Many people say they hear just fine as long as they are looking at you, however in reality they are not hearing better, rather they are supplementing whatever is not being heard with lip reading. Lip reading is an unconscious tactic and most people are not aware they are doing it. Try closing your eyes when you next have a conversation, particularly in noise, and you will see that you have to concentrate more to follow the conversation. Another unconscious tactic we use is our brain’s ability to fill in gaps of words and sentences when they are not actually heard. We only need to hear a third of a word to be able to guess what the word is. And we only need to hear every second word in a sentence to be able to piece the whole thing together. Take someone with age related hearing loss. They have normal low frequency hearing but significant high pitched hearing loss. With speech vowels are typically a lower pitched speech sound and the consonants higher pitched sounds. If I tell this person as I’m walking to the bathroom (so they can’t lip read) that “I am going to go brush my teeth” they may only hear “I am _oin o ru__ my _ee__”. Because I am walking to the bathroom with a toothbrush in my hand the brain is able to fill in gaps from the context of this action and the vowel speech sounds heard. However, what they think they heard may be completely different to what was actually said. A person with hearing loss may think you said “I am going to flush my pee”! Difficulty hearing in background noise is another common problem. Most background noise, such as car noise, crowded room babble, and air conditioners, are low pitched sounds that can be loud enough to block some of the low pitched vowel sounds. However, the higher pitched consonants are still audible and our brains are able to fill in the gaps based on those sounds and the context of the conversation. When someone has a hearing loss then they may not have access

to enough of the speech sounds to fill in the gaps. Let’s take the age related hearing loss example again. In background noise a normal hearing person will probably hear “I _m g_ing t_ g_ br__sh my t__th. In conjunction with lip reading enough sounds are picked up to fill in the gap. Whereas the person with the high pitched hearing loss will not have access to the starts and ends of the ends of the words and the noise is blocking the only sounds they can hear (the vowels). In that case not enough speech sounds are discernible to maintain and engage in a conversation. Not being able to actively participate in a conversation can be quite frustrating but luckily many of these issues can be quite quickly diagnosed and treated.

Business and fitness have lots in common Jeff Osborne, from Vision Personal Training in Bundall, sheds some light on how you can save yourself up to five hours a week wning or running a business is stressful. Anyone who has done it will tell you. Two of the biggest challenges most people face in this 24/7 connected world are staying sane and emotionally level, as well as being able to switch off and enjoy time away from the business. The catch is that many people who are good at what they do wear their passion and fatigue like a badge of honour. They even brag to their friends about how little time off they have had or how little sleep they get. So what if I told you I can find you another 2-5 hours in a week that you can use anyway you like? Would you be interested in that? It is simple, but it takes some effort. There are two major areas people lose time in their week that are directly affected by your health and fitness, as well as another major one that is a result of the other two. The first is that people lose time in transition. Switching between tasks is difficult for the brain to do. One of my favourite books on this topic has the headline: Manage Your Energy, Not Your Time. There is much time to be gained in being better at switching between the different tasks you have to undertake. Here are a few tips: • Turn off notifications on your phone (at the very least use the 'do not disturb' feature for a few hours a day when you are most productive). Having that noise or banner or even that little annoying red circle at the top right of the app makes it hard to not find out what the message is. I promise you will be less distracted, more productive and people will wait.You can check things on your time rather than theirs.

•

Develop a routine to help you switch between roles. It is helpful for your brain to have a switch to get in the zone faster. Athletes use it, so should you. Exercise is a fantastic switch (even as little as 10 squats and 10 push-ups will do it), even the act of wrapping up what you did for the day and what you are looking forward to tomorrow tells your brain that today is over, relax and wait until tomorrow (and it gives your subconscious something to work on while you sleep). The best way to end the day is to do a personal training session.Having the appointment forces you to get done on time (see Parkinson’s Law. Work expands to fill the time you allow it). Your time with a trainer is great to focus on you and you will leave ready to see your partner or family with energy and focus that they will appreciate.

The second point where you can save time is around food. We lose lots of time around this. It’s true, so much time is lost preparing food, eating food, cleaning up after food, travelling to go get food, recovering from food (that is, the 3pm post-lunch coma). One tip that will save you at least two hours a week is to have a foodprep day. A great thing to do with your family is to set aside a few hours to prep, cook and container food for the week.You will cook much healthier, feel better, save a ton of money, save at least two hours of time and it also shows your partner and kids how important it is to look after yourself. (You can’t expect them to take their health seriously if you won’t). Do yourself a favour and go and see a professional. SPANISH EGGS SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1 medium onion, chopped • 1 medium red pepper, cut into chunks • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 2 tsp ground cumin • 1 kg vine-ripened tomatoes, chopped coarsely • 375g McKenzie’s red kidney beans, uncooked • 2 tbsp coriander, roughly chopped • 4 eggs • 1 fresh green chilli, sliced • 100g Persian feta, crumbled • 1/3 cup fresh coriander, extra METHOD Prepare and cook beans according to packet directions. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook onion and capsicum, stirring for 5 minutes or until soft. Add garlic and cumin, and cook, stirring until fragrant. Stir in tomatoes and cooked beans and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes or until the sauce thickens. Season to taste. Stir in coriander. Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees. Place a 1 litre ovenproof dish in the oven while pre-heating. Pour hot tomato mixture into hot dish. Make four indents in the mixture. Break eggs into a cup one at a time and slide each egg into an indent. Sprinkle with chili. Bake for 8 minutes or until the whites of eggs are set and egg yolks are just beginning to set. Serve topped with feta and extra coriander.

LAMB SHANK AND VEGETABLE SOUP SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS • 1 tbsp olive oil • 4 lamb shanks • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 4 carrots, sliced • 4 celery sticks, sliced • 375g McKenzies soup mix • 5 cups beef stock • 4 cups water • 1/4 cup parsley, finely chopped • Salt and pepper to taste METHOD: Heat oil in large heavy-based saucepan. Cook lamb shanks until well browned on all sides. Transfer to a large plate. Leave remaining oil in pan. Add onion, garlic, carrot and celery to pan. Cook, stirring often, until onion is just tender. Add soup mix. Pour in stock and water. Bring to the boil. Return shanks to the pan and immerse in liquid. Reduce heat to medium low. Simmer, partially covered for 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until shanks are very tender. Add more water if required. Season to taste and garnish with parsley to serve.

STICKY DATE PUDDING WITH CARAMEL SAUCE SERVES 8 INGREDIENTS PUDDING: • 1 cup pitted dates, roughly chopped • 300ml orange juice or water • 1 tsp McKenzie’s bi-carb soda • 3/4 cup brown sugar • 80g unsalted butter • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • 1 1/3 cup plain flour • 2 1/2 tsp McKenzie’s baking powder • 1/2 tsp vanilla essence CARAMEL SAUCE: • 1 cup brown sugar • 125g unsalted butter • 1/2 cup cream METHOD: Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Grease and line a 20x20cm cake tin. Bring dates and orange juice to the boil in a small saucepan. Stir in bi-carb and remove from heat. Allow to cool. Beat sugar and butter until creamy and pale. Add eggs until well combined. Fold in flour, date mixture and vanilla essence. Pour mixture into greased and lined tin and bake for 30 minutes or until golden and cooked through. To make the sauce, bring all ingredients to the boil in a saucepan. Simmer for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat. Serve warm pieces of sticky date pudding with warm caramel sauce.

It’s evident that the rise of female entrepreneurship isn’t slowing down anytime soon with the likes of Arianna Huffington and Sheryl Sandberg controlling the movement overseas and Lisa Messenger and Lorna Jane leading the pack in Australia. There has also been collective realisation that women don’t need to do business like their male counterparts, they can run an empire on their own terms. But what does this mean exactly? Well, for Arianna Huffington, this meant becoming an advocate on the importance of sleep and self-care for entrepreneurs. After splitting her head open as she passed out in her office, Arianna realised that business didn’t have to mean late nights and early mornings. In fact, she could run a more productive business if she took the much-needed eight hours of shut eye at night. This differs greatly to the opinions of Jack Dorsey and Tom Ford who boast about sleeping less than five hours a night. Closer to home, Lisa Messenger disrupted the magazine industry with a new way of thinking and doing business. Lisa even attributes the success of the magazine to her “think differently” attitude. In another story, Business Chicks owner Emma Isaacs recently moved to America 50

to take the networking group global. When she bought Business Chicks as a young 25-year-old woman there were 250 members now there are more than 35,000. How about this research from Women In Global Business (WIGB) … Australian female-owned businesses that have expanded overseas achieve greater success, with one-third of global business operations earning more than half their revenue internationally. Incredible, isn’t it? WIGB also reports almost half of female-owned businesses (42 per cent) go global within 12 months of their launch and 81 per cent in the first five years of operation. In an age when women are still being paid less than men, why wouldn’t we take control of our financial future, run life on our own terms and start a business? That’s the reason I love it. I get to create a life I love that’s flexible and free whatever that means for me (it might be different for you). I won’t lie, it’s hard work, but so is anything if you want to make a success of it. Sometimes the hours are outrageous and the workload can be heavy, plus you don’t get holiday and sick pay. But I feel I have more options now. Other women say having a business means they can be home with their children or that it allows them to travel, see the world and work at the same time.
