Last year I decided to try a “Law of Attraction” type game I’d read about that would evidently draw money to me. Whoo hoo! I’m the financial worrier in the family (there’s one in every household), so I figured there was no harm in trying this trick. In accordance with the rules, I withdrew $100 from the ATM which I was to carry in my bag for a couple of weeks. As you go about your days, you spend the money, but virtually − in the mind. For example, if I’m wandering

by Sanity at Runaway Bay, I might mentally spend the $100 on three new CDs to listen to in the car, or shout mum the entire series of Doc Martin (she’d love that!). I could drop $100 on the totally unnecessary but gorgeous brown boots at Shoes on Chevron; and as the aim is to “spend” the $100 repeatedly, I would also “buy” some sexy little heels I have my eye on over at Shoetique in Southport! Fun game, yes?

The activity, as I understand it, works to adjust the mindset so that instead of worrying about how much things cost, the mind gets used to existing with a sense of abundance, and this in turn “attracts” good things in many forms to you.

I got as far as a day in before Cooper and I ended up at the Coles check-out − wallets at home (long story) − therefore we were without any cards or form of payment. Of course, I had the experimental $100 on hand. I suppose although I didn’t try it for long enough to see if anything more extraordinary manifested, I did feel abundant in that moment because Cooper, Harry the cattle dog and I were indeed going to eat that evening after all.

There’s no doubt money is a big deal in life, and the cause of many headaches at times. Being organised, efficient and proactive however, means we are best prepared to address challenges. That’s why, once a year, we present our “money and success” issue, which includes information, anecdotes and expert advice designed to inspire you to make the most of what you have (and with any luck, attract a little more).

Peta Yalg uncovers Door of Youth entrepreneur, Debbie Majella Nolan’s ‘beautiful’ secrets of success s a single parent with a full time job and aspirations to start her own business, Debbie Majella Nolan of Varsity Lakes faced her share of tough times.

Immersed in the beauty industry since she was 21, Debbie has worked as a therapist, coach, educator and regional manager for a beauty company. After many years learning the ins and outs of such a diverse industries, Debbie says she had an ‘awakening’.

She realised how many companies were marketing their skin care products as ‘natural’, only to read in the fine print how far from ‘natural’ they really were.

Debbie desired to be able to offer a skin care range that was truly chemical free, made with natural and organic products that could produce actual results. She was able to successfully formulate her own range, Door of Youth. However, when it came time to market, she got lost in the world of advertising and promotions.

Admittedly, Debbie says she relied on the advice of others with little personal knowledge of online marketing. Starting out, she invested time and money into 3000 units of skin care that she had to throw away because they had passed their usedby date.

After losing $60,000 in the first two years, Debbie’s confidence was shattered, but instead of giving up, she devised a new approach. Two vital lessons Debbie learned through the tough times were that your website is “the front door to your business”, and that “engaging with consumers on social media, being involved in networking groups and speaking at women’s events” is the key to creating awareness, for her business at least.

Self-development is an essential part of Debbie’s life. She frequents seminars, workshops and has had many helpful mentors throughout her journey, one in particular is Justin Herald, “He is an amazing man,” says Debbie.

It took her seven years but now Debbie’s skin care line has gained momentum and has recently become available for retail sale at Supercuts in the Runaway Bay Shopping Centre.

To top it all off, Debbie has been nominated for the Telstra Business Woman of the Year, with finalists to be announced in November and she is flying high with the success of finally fulfilling her dream.

What do you know about your personal credit rating? And how can you really achieve financial freedom? Carmel McCartin, finance expert, author and BudgetBitch.com.au entrepreneur, shares valuable advice with Get it for our annual money issue f ever there was a time to get your budget organised, it’s now.

Australia’s credit reporting system has made some major changes and while many people would say it’s about time, how much do you know about your personal credit rating?

In the past, Australia used a negative data-reporting system. This meant that your credit report only included a narrow range of negative information − such as bankruptcies, defaults and any instances where you’ve been denied credit. They also included information about habitual ‘late payers’ of utility and other accounts.

In March of this year, legislative reforms brought Australia into line with other Western countries where positive credit scores are the norm.

Credit agencies will now consider new variables such as your payment history and they will also recognise and reward good credit behaviour (you won’t get prizes, but you will have a record to show if you pay on time).

Currently there are three credit reporting agencies in Australia – Experian, Veda and Dun & Bradstreet. As an individual, you have the right to request a free copy of your personal credit report every year by contacting any of these national credit reporting agencies. You can do it online and you’ll find their websites easily. l MyCreditFile.com.au (Veda) l CheckYourCredit.com.au (Dun & Bradstreet) l Experian.com.au (Experian) Once you submit the paperwork, credit reports are required to be provided within ten days of the receipt of your request. If you want your report immediately, you may find that there is a charge involved.

Lots of people tell me that they couldn’t be bothered getting a copy of their personal report but there are good reasons for doing so. Nowadays when online and personal fraud seems to be more prevalent, obtaining your credit report will help to prevent identity theft; you really can’t afford to be too blasé about this.

Your credit report will also confirm the accuracy of your credit history. Have June 2014

Get your finances you ever wondered if there’s a ‘black mark’ against your name? And if there is – did you ever wonder how it got there?

Under this new system, if you miss a loan payment by more than five days, your credit file will be given a black mark and your credit rating will deteriorate. However, it will also show how often you have made repayments on time.

Some of the things that your new credit report will show are: l Whether repayments have been made on time over a two-year period l If a repayment of over $150 is more than 60 days late, it will be listed as a default l The limit on the credit cards for which you have applied l The type of card for which you have applied l The date you opened a credit account, the type of account, and when it was closed l If, because of a default, you have entered into a new arrangement for repayments 16

What can you do to keep your report in good order? l Make sure that you pay a debt/loan on time. More than five days late and you’ll get a black mark. l Do your research for credit cards and store cards at a time when you don’t need them. It’s when you’re under pressure to pay for something quickly, that you get the worst deal. l If you’re having trouble covering your debt obligations, contact the lender to renegotiate your repayment terms.

Now, you might be thinking that you don’t need to worry about a credit report, but the very next time you apply for, or change a mortgage, a credit card or even a contract for your phone – you can be sure that a credit provider will be looking at your borrowing history.

Of course, sorting out your budget will assist in making sure you are never late in paying a bill, or defaulting on a loan; thus ensuring your credit report stays in good order.

l Protect your valuables and income earning potential with appropriate insurance policies including mortgage, life, and disability policies.

Do an annual check to make sure you have the right policies for you. l Don’t forget to save some money for retirement. Social Security will cover only a fraction of the money you will need or want for retirement.

It’s important to start this as soon as possible and doing so will cost less in the long term. Talk to your financial advisor about preparing for retirement. l Organise your will and create an estate plan. Many people think they need to be super wealthy before doing estate planning, which is not true. You may not own a lot but wouldn’t you prefer to pass it on to those you love than leave it to the government?

Can you see yourself actually owning these dreams?

Unfortunately, for many of us, planning for these things stops right there; at the ‘dreaming-about’ stage. With a little planning and some discipline the likelihood of achieving our goals can be dramatically improved.

Consider implementing some of these tactics to improve your financial picture. l Write down your financial goals and objectives. If you don’t write it down, it will always remain ‘just a dream’.

A vision board can be helpful and including deadlines will also help you to stay focused.

If it all seems too hard, a finance professional will be able to help you to reach your financial goals. The best time to get started with a plan for you and your family’s future is now, while it’s uppermost in your mind. It doesn’t have to be difficult; you just have to do something now.

As you’ve no doubt heard before − “those that fail to plan; plan to fail”. And as always, the very first step in starting is to plan your budget.

l Use credit cards as little as possible.

Pay in cash instead. If you must use credit cards, then remember the golden rule − pay them off in full each month. l Spend a little, but save a little more.

As your debts get paid off, save the ‘extra’ cash each month. Because you are using the money you could be saving for debt repayments it’s easy to be tempted to overspend using the ‘extra’ cash. Online savings accounts will help you to resist temptation because immediate access to the funds is not readily available. l Keep a savings balance of at least three months’ worth of expenses.

This can be used when emergencies arise which in turn will keep the stress levels to a minimum and save you from charging on credit cards.

It always helps to have a ‘Plan B’ for money-draining moments.

Riana Horner discovers how Melanie Spears turned despair into a project of hope that is now renowned the world over iving in financial fear along with the heartbreak of a broken relationship, the pressures of life a little while ago had destroyed Melanie Spears. Unable to work because she was physically and emotionally exhausted, she had every reason to surrender. But with a note pad, pen and a glimpse of hope, one day she began the practise of giving thanks. Soon realising the power of gratitude, Melanie’s now internationally famous Gratitude Diary (diarygratitude.com) was born.

Growing up on a farm near Condobolin with her parents, Melanie was always blessed with a sense of freedom. The freedom to walk, the freedom to ride, the freedom to drive anywhere over their 500 acres.“Freedom has always been a primary value of mine. I had fun times playing in the shearing sheds bouncing on big piles of wool.” Now living just up the highway in New Brighton with a direct view to the ocean, she takes pleasure in whale watching right from her home. Melanie is still blessed with the freedom she so yearns for, but it was not always this way.

Facing bank foreclosure in 2007, Melanie and her partner’s financial state became unmanageable. Longing for a life of stability and normality had turned their worlds into a spiral of loss. Their emotional state soon took a toll on their relationship, and so finally Melanie was left to fight her unknown world of helplessness and restrictions alone. As floods of anxiety filled early morning wakes, Melanie would sit on her veranda looking out onto her beautiful ocean view. She began to write down what she was grateful for, just the simple things in her life.

Realising that her stress levels started to soothe immediately, she says,“I began to develop faith that everything was going to be alright, and so it was.”

As the practice of giving thanks became such an important part of Melanie’s everyday ritual, she combined it with her working diary.

Just jotting down what she was appreciative of gave Melanie a new lease on life, and she soon learnt to be grateful for every experience she encountered. She had learnt to no longer be affected by the stresses of life; even more so, she was grateful for them. The Gratitude Diary was produced as a direct result of her experiences, and Melanie gradually became aware that there was a demand for this type of daily therapy − much cheaper than seeing a therapist, and probably far more effective. A combination of an everyday journal and a space for giving thanks to all you are grateful for; “It’s a tool for transformation, self reflection and awareness. Each day there is a section to practice the blessing of giving thanks. If you do this on a regular basis, you can literally go from a lack of perspective to an abundance perspective.”

With gratitude From emotional despair to the enjoyment of living in every moment, Melanie decided to share The Gratitude Diary and Daily Planner with many. I stand surrendered to the awe of how such a simple act of being grateful can transform a soul on such a profound level. In some cases, it has saved lives!”

Melanie also set up a playful and deeply nurturing rejuvenation retreat for people to “simply explore what creating a life that you love might look like.” As a group, people are able to experience real possibilities and explore passions at a paradise filled location in Bali.

The group take part in a detox and help each other to be genuinely honest with themselves which helps to support a healthier and brighter vision. She also runs a workshop called Soul and Money which shows you how to align with your passions in a profitable way.

“Very simply, what you focus on grows.

So if you focus on what is good, you create more good. This practice is not about 18

denying emotions of what is not working. It’s about finding the good or learning, in what may appear to be a difficult situation, and transforming that situation from within.”

Melanie is also fulfilling a long awaited passion of hers that was put on hold due to her fears of “not being good enough.” Recording an album of songs that she has written with a friend, she now lives life her own way with the freedom she knew so well as a child. Manoeuvring from 40 hours a week of shift work to experiencing a creative life was a radical, empowering change for Melanie. “I’m also renovating an old shack that I may one day reside in, planting trees and watching them grow, building a new website, helping promotions to support people’s wellbeing, planning workshops, reading interesting books about great and enlightening things and generally having fun.”

With plans to expand her enterprise, Melanie is currently looking for people who want to launch their own Gratitude Diary business in the UK and the USA. “Why not share the love abroad? The diary is just another expression of me being free to create a book that I like and that I think is pretty cool.”

hrush’ is a common problem that no-one really wants to talk about, but a lot of people suffer from. Some are under the impression that it is only women who fall victim to the nasty effects of Candida Albicans, but did you know that everyone can be infected with this fungus? Is there a test available?

There are several ways you can test for Candida. A very effective one that I use at the clinic is live blood analysis, using a dark field microscope and a pin prick of blood which is viewed immediately. Your stool can also be sent to a laboratory and tested for a variety of different markers. What you’ll need: l Straightening Iron l Sectioning clips l Brush (Mason Pearson) l Hair spray l Shine spray l Volumising Dust

STEPS: 1 Section hair as pictured (ear to ear).

2 Using a straightening iron, curl the hair twisting your hand towards the back of the head so curls are directed off the face.

3 Continue this in the same direction thru the back of the head.

4 Complete this process throughout the whole head in the same direction. Once done lightly spray the curls with hair spray and let cool.

5 Take a brush. (I prefer a Mason Pearson) Brush out the curls softly.

6 Continue this throughout the whole head creating a beautiful soft wave.

7 Lightly mist with a shine spray to add gloss.

8 Use a volumising dust (DUST IT by Schwarzkopf Professional) dust into the root area.

9 Gently work into the roots with your fingertips, to give a bit of volume and texture. Finish off with hair spray.

Do you really believe there is room for an infinite number of entrepreneurs in the world?

I believe the word ‘entrepreneur’ is up for interpretation in the age of the social media economy. We are refining what it is by defining new industries and creating new ways in which we can achieve the same objective,via a different and more effective path. By locking oneself into a ‘stereotype,’ you hinder your opportunity for expansion. We can never out-perform our self-image, and if that means we use the word entrepreneur publicly or privately to evolve, then so be it. More entrepreneurs mean greater innovation and more opportunities for our world to create a more sustainable future. Each of us have the ability to shape the world we live in, locally, nationally or even internationally.

The entrepreneurial spirit in each of us inspires others to be more than what they are today.

Contrasting experiences, thoughts and desires all add to the experience that we’re each here to enjoy and evolve from.

When in your life did you have the epiphany that you could do what you loved from anywhere in the world?

It wasn’t so much an epiphany as it was out June 2014

of necessity. In 2012 I found myself caught in Hurricane Sandy. With the business too reliant on me at the time back home in Australia, I was forced to reinvent it to the point that it didn’t need me every single day before the power went out indefinitely and I went off the grid. In fact, as I write this interview, I’m sitting in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. Creating new experiences for yourself result in entirely different answers to questions we may have been stuck on. It all adds to the mix. Especially when we’re inspired by what those have achieved that went before us, in any industry or field of work.

What inspired you to want to share this message with others?

I’d been in discussions with Wiley Publishing about writing a new book after meeting them in New York. It originally started out being an entirely different topic, until they probed further and realised the real story was about my trip to New York and how each and anyone with information and knowledge can turn it into profits and finally flee the 9 to 5 grind. It’s a struggle almost all of us can relate to. My passion comes from the ability to help others get what they want, because you know that in turn, they will inspire someone else.

You utilise social media effectively and efficiently – do you have a personal favourite platform?

Social media is an incredible platform to be able to share one’s message on. My personal favourite at the moment is Facebook due to high ROI on advertising and engagement.

However, in saying that, I don’t believe we should ever have ‘one single point of failure’ in our businesses, i.e. if Facebook changed the rules of engagement, we’d be out of business. It’s important to have various options that all fulfil your objectives.

Do you have advice for business owners who are working really hard to move things forward but who just feel like things are stuck or moving at a snail’s pace with regards to revenue and opportunities generation?

Absolutely. It’s critical that no matter what the size of the business, you know your numbers.

How much profit you make per unique visitor to your website, which social media adverts convert and which ones don’t, your distinct sales process and an element that everyone overlooks, the major holes in your sales funnel that can be plugged by creating a strategy to recover lost sales opportunities in a more formulated approach, i.e. managing shopping

cart abandonment and reducing refunds. This strategy alone can quickly add 20-30% to a business. This to a business that’s struggling could be where the profit margin is. I encourage every business to look at the details – that’s where your answer is.

How do you transition from spending so much time working in a business to finding time to develop ideas or create things?

It’s critical to understand where the real value comes from in a business, i.e. intellectual property, whether it be a physical or a digital product. For me, the day-to-day tasks get done in the first half of the day, as quickly and as efficiently as possible. This includes outsourcing various activities like social media, accounts and website updating to various partners that can support me in my role, thereby I become the project manager. Where many fail is in having only one or two products. You need at least three to be financially viable as bulk of your investment is made on selling the first two products. The third one is where the real profit margin kicks in for many.This means, scheduling time daily for product and content creation is not a ‘maybe I’ll get to it later activity.’ It’s a ‘do it now’ activity that can build a 6-7 figure business.

This mindset shift will see you ‘make time’ for these activities.

You operate extremely successfully within the online realm; What are the big ways you’ve seen people fail with an online business?

The biggest ways I’ve seen people fail online are, when they’ve not taken the time to successfully map out their business and rely too heavily on ‘other’ so called experts to drive it for them. When you hand a task over to someone else, such as lead generation or social media expert for example, you ‘must’ know the basics so that you can pick up if your business is going off track before it’s too late. Weekly monitoring of your results is critical, any longer and you risk losing thousands and not being able to recover from it. The buck stops with the owner. It’s not

their responsibility to keep the business going, it’s yours.

What’s your advice for ‘ideas people’ who find it challenging to focus on just one thing, or who struggle narrowing to a niche?

Narrowing to a niche is by far the most effective way to reduce your marketing spend.

I tell all of my clients that when you are just getting started out go niche and then when and only when you are established within that niche, start to go broad. In many cases this can be focusing on a core subject for at least 6 months to a year to gain ‘profitable’ traction. Going too broad at the start is one of the fastest ways to send yourself broke.

How do you personally maintain your focus?

I use various NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) exercises to maintain my focus.

This includes a technique I’ve named ‘Reverse, Rewind.’ You close your eyes and imagine yourself getting your activities done as the day unfolds in fast forward, feeling elated, energised and focused. You then rewind it back to before your day began. You repeat this process ten or more times going back and forward as fast as you can.You’re literally tricking the subconscious mind into thinking you’ve been there and done it before. Which means, you release all fear, distractions and anxiety so you can focus on the task at hand and get more done in less time. I use it daily.

What are your predictions on future trends – that is, what skills we be most valued across the coming 20 years and what industries will be the new big money spinners?

The biggest money spinners that are still to evolve is in the realm of information and expertise. Knowledge is power, influence and money. Something our world will always and reliably pay for. With the help of crowd-funding sites we are seeing this information turned into tangible products that can make a real impact in other people’s live and solve real problems.

This industry will continue to evolve rapidly in the years to come, opening up many opportunities for people to service it better and get their ideas off of the ground, whereas in the past, they wouldn’t have had a hope in hell.

Many people are now inspired by what you do and what you have to say; who do you look up to?

Funnily enough I don’t pull my inspiration from the traditional entrepreneurial types. I look to individuals such as Lady Gaga who have revolutionised their industries by being controversial and strategic in their approach.

Every move is a chess move based on achieving a specific outcome and although everything she does is highly publicised, it takes an extra level of looking to uncover why she is doing what she is doing underneath it all.That’s where the real magic occurs and from which we can really be inspired by.

Sarah Blinco takes an easy flight across the country, taste buds at the ready When I checked in on Facebook from the Adelaide airport announcing it was my first time in South Australia, I received a rush of feedback from fans, locals, and ex-pats living in other Aussie regions expressing enthusiasm for the city. Affectionately known as ‘Radelaide’, the city is renowned as being friendly, relaxed yet vibrant, and surrounded by beautiful countryside and beaches. I was in town for the world famous Tasting Australia festival, and discovered for myself the city’s delightful (and delicious) precincts dedicated to dining, boutique bars and gourmet food.

I found myself meandering through the Adelaide Central Market for a large part of my stay. It’s the southern hemisphere’s largest undercover produce market (adelaidecentralmarket.com.au) and South Australia’s most visited tourist attraction, with roots dating back to 1869. The market boasts over 80 stalls selling everything you can imagine, from fresh cheese, fruit, veges, bread, cakes, coffee, nuts, yoghurt and fare from around the region and the world. The market is easy to navigate as it’s divided into a colourful array of lanes and broadways; it’s also easy to find being as it’s generally referred to as being the ‘Heart of Adelaide’.

During my stay I was treated to an ‘udderly delightful’ experience that I dare say anyone would love − a cheese-making masterclass. It’s fun and indulgent, hosted by the gorgeous Sheree Sullivan and Udder Delights (udderdelights.com.au) team, who guide you through making your very own cheese which you can create, take home, nurture and in good time eat. A cheese and wine trail is on offer at Udder Delights’ Hahndorf location, as well as a cheese themed high tea. The masterclass I enjoyed however, took place at the picturesque Bird in Hand winery which is now also hosting wonderfully chic musical events on site at the vineyard (check the website to see if something’s on that coincides with your visit: birdinhand.com.au).

Here you can take the kids strawberry picking at Beerenberg Farm and sample their incredible produce including jams,sauces and relishes. Walk down the main street and explore the Hahndorf food trail. Sample artisan food produce along the way, drop in at cellar doors, eat an amazing steak and chug a big stein of beer plus find amazing handmade goodness amongst the most beautiful shops.

2. Adelaide city centre provides restaurant and cafe fodder heaven for foodies. Some of my favourites include Lemongrass, Cocolat, Brunellis on Rundle; Gauchos on Gouger, 34

Jasmine Indian Restaurant in Hindmarsh Square and Alphutte on Pulteney.

Or opt for a quiet coffee and sample scrumptious sweets in E for Ethel cafe in Melbourne Street.

3. Spend a day or half day at Glenelg. From the city, take the tram down to Glenelg beach where you can walk the length of the shopping mecca street, eat at many fabulous restaurants and check out just one of Adelaide’s many beautiful unspoiled sandy beaches.

4. Heading north of the city you can visit world famous wine region, the Barossa Valley, but make sure you take in all the adorable towns along the way. Each one has much to offer in terms of locally made food produce, antique and thrift shops, cellar doors, and

quaint country town hospitality. Head further north and explore the Clare Valley. If you have a few days, take time to travel around the Copper Triangle. The towns in this region have something for everyone and make for a great short break in South Australia.

5. Head south of the city and you can explore the McLaren Vale region famous for wines and beautiful produce. Once you are there, you are half way to Victor Harbor, a popular seaside town further down the coast.

From Cape Jervis, a little further round the coast, you can take the SeaLink ferry to amazing Kangaroo Island. You definitely would want a few days to explore this area. You can book your car/caravan onto the ferry or hire one on the Island. The wildlife, national parks and local produce are outstanding.

WHERE TO STAY There’s nowhere more central to stay than the lovely Rendezvous Grand Hotel. It’s one of those properties that boasts two critical homeaway-from-home elements − homeliness and cosmopolitan style.

It’s true that first impressions count for a lot, and on setting foot inside this upscale hotel I was entirely satisfied that I’d enjoy my stay.The foyer is elegant with chic mood lighting and comfortable spaces to sit and relax. Lounge 55 features prominently on this level too, and beckons with a tone that tempted me along these lines: “Hey, aren’t you tired from that flight, would you like a yummy vino?”

I was excited to discover my Deluxe King room was on level 17 (of 18) with sweeping views of the city which is equally as pretty day or night. The most important aspect of any hotel is its rooms, and I loved mine. Sliding Japanese style doors lead to the wardrobe space and luxurious bathroom with oversized tub and French Connection toiletries. The 35

bed was supremely comfortable and if you’re like me and fussy about your pillow, there’s a specialised menu available to suit all requirements.

Further facilities you’ll also love about this place include its gym, pool, spa and sauna; free WiFi, concierge service, business centre, the Straits Cafe which boasts a delicious modern Australian menu, and in-room dining which I can personally vouch for as being the perfect combination of a comforting guilty pleasure and excellent value for money.

How to get your child interested in school 5 top tips

Cooper Dawson is a primary school teacher who has taught in Australia and England; here he offers tips on how to overcome one of parents’ biggest challenges ost parents appreciate the importance of their child’s education. However, trying to convince a child to share your wisdom can be both frustrating and distressing. Children who are disengaged from school find it difficult to be successful.

The challenge we as parents, teachers and guardians need to overcome is how to make a child interested in learning; in other words, how to get your child interested in school.

From my experience as a teacher, the best way to get a child interested in school work is to make learning fun and approach all subjects with a touch of creativity and humour.

Having a parent tell you their child enjoys coming to school always gives me goose bumps and a sense of pride. I wish I’d felt that way about my teachers as a child.

Based on my experience working in partnership with parents of children I’ve taught in the past, here are five tips you might find useful too: June 2014

Tip 1: Speak positively about education Consistently let your child know how important education is and celebrate their successes whether it be for academic achievement, behaviour or effort. Children hailing from negative households, with parents who are disinterested or who fail to promote the importance of education are contributing to their child’s negative experience towards learning.

Tip 2: Show your child you are interested in their homework Ask your child how their day was; what did they learn? Have them show you or explain it to you. All parents should know what their child has for homework 36

and when it is due. Timetables, spelling words and reading aloud each day are the fundamentals of success, and should not be ignored or taken for granted. There are wonderful resources available that can make this process a fun learning experience the whole family can enjoy.

Tip 3: Speak to their teacher Every parent should speak to their child’s teacher at least once a term. This is an excellent opportunity to discover your child’s strengths and weaknesses.

Conversations with their teacher can help to determine if there are any issues causing your child to disconnect or disengage from the classroom.

Queensland Council of Parents and Citizens Association president, Margaret Black says, “There’s nothing more powerful

than a three-way (parent/teacher/child) partnership,” and I agree.

It may take many conversations but it’s crucial you actively listen to understand your child’s social wellbeing.

Finally, it is also the role of the teacher to make each child feel that they are in a positive and supportive classroom environment where someone has faith in them and encourages them to believe that anything is possible. If both parents and teachers maintain a united front, then the child is placed in the best possible situation for success and contentedness.

Your money is managed mainly through electronic means nowadays,and so kids today have a less physical understanding of money. They see us magically hand over a piece of plastic and receive toys, food and games in exchange. Now, it’s more important than ever to teach your kids good money habits.

My son is only two, but I’m already showing him the value of a dollar. You might think that’s young, but through my job I’ve seen firsthand how it’s never too early to help kids develop a healthy attitude toward their finances.You don’t need to be an expert to teach your kids good financial sense. Here a some simple steps you can take.

Ages 0-8 This is an important stage in a child’s development, with their understanding of the world just starting to take shape. If your child is in this age bracket, you can start to take some of the ‘magic’ away from money. Instead of going to the grocery store, spend some time at the farmers’ market. You can explain to your child that the farmers grew the produce, and when you pay in cash explain how they will use that to grow more produce. They can see the market in operation.

Another way is to take your child to the bank, so they get a feel for the physical exchange of money. There are also various games that teach positive money habits, with some financial institutions offering these games for free on their websites. You can also play a simulation board game, such as Monopoly or The Game of Life.

Ages 8-14 By this stage in a child’s development they should have some understanding, if only basic, of the way money works. To support the information they learn in school you should show them how finances work in the real world.

One of the first steps is helping them open a bank account, if they don’t have one already.You can encourage them to compare their options and then let them choose the bank account they want so they learn to take responsibility.

You can also provide them with a modest allowance so they can start to save for their own purchases. It’s very important to teach them the value of waiting until they have sufficient money, which means no advances on their pocket money. It’s also important they see their allowance as an exchange for something, so perhaps set them a weekly chore in order to earn it.

Ages 15-21 By this stage your child will already be making financial decisions. They will be buying things on their own and start to think about their future. You need to support them, but June 2014

at the same time let them make their own decisions. A child can start working in their teens, so during this period in their lives it may be a good idea for them to get a casual job. Even by working a couple of hours a week, they can see how they are rewarded for their work while learning valuable employment skills that they can use later on.

This is also the stage to start teaching them about credit, interest and paying bills.

Depending on where they sit in this age bracket, they may still be too young to get a credit card, but they can see how you manage yours. Show 38

them any budget apps or spreadsheets you use and explain how your credit card works, and how you pay your bills. If they ask to borrow money you can explain how it would work if they borrowed money from the bank, or even just charge them interest yourself.

Your kids are never too early, or too old, to be taught good money sense. No matter what stage they’re at, make sure your kids are developing a healthy attitude towards money that will see them through their adult years.

I have had my own journey with my body. I’ve had feelings ranging from hate, disgust and embarrassment; amazement and joy while pregnant; and more recently pride, acceptance and love.

After 40+ years I have, at last, learnt 39

to accept my flaws and I have definitely grown to really like (and yes, maybe even love) the person that I’ve become and the package that I’m wrapped in. It’s such an empowering feeling when you finally come to the realisation that YOU alone are responsible for your own happiness.

YOU make the choices.

YOU determine your reactions and actions, and YOU can change whatever it is that you need to in order to become a person that you can love.

Whatever your goal is, YOU have the power to make it happen. But let me warn you, there are no quick fixes, no magic pills or potions, no short cuts. It takes hard work, discipline, kindness to yourself and learning to love yourself enough to make the right choices for life.

James Frizelle’s Automotive Group encourages females to apply for roles in a traditionally male-orientated industry n Australia, women make up 51 per cent of the population, however market research indicates that females are in charge of more than 80 per cent of all consumer purchase decisions. These decisions however, extend far beyond the stereotypical products of supermarket checkout, shoe shops and beauty counters! In today’s market, women are responsible for the majority of new and used vehicle decisions in each household.

Currently the Frizelles’ group employs 544 staff with only a small portion of 40 female staff in positions that are non-traditional roles including sales, service, finance, insurance, detailing and parts.

James Frizelle’s Automotive Group is taking a positive step forward in the automotive business and is seeking to inspire more women to apply for non-traditional roles to work within the company. The Group is continually evolving and adapting to meet the demands of the consumer market and this recent initiative is just another example of the company keeping pace with the customer.

Taking this into consideration, the June 2014

Frizelles’ applied to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) for an exemption under the Anti-Discrimination Act so that the company could advertise for and recruit females in the above roles.

In late February, QCAT confirmed that it was not necessary for them to grant an exemption; since the family owned and operated company are trying to promote equal opportunity in a traditionally maleorientated industry.

Joint Dealer Principal, Brett Frizelle, is always considering opportunities to continually grow the business and encouraging females to apply for roles across the Group is certainly one of them.

“Our business has been built on meeting the expectations of clients for 29 years. Women make up over 50 per cent of our buyers and we receive regular feedback that our customers would like the option of buying from either a male or female sales person.

Currently, our female sales team is less than 3 per cent of our entire sales force. This exemption isn’t about discriminating against 40

men; it’s about honestly recruiting to meet the needs of our business and our clients and providing choice.”

Tania Webbern, General Manager of Gold Coast Volkswagen, located in Southport, sees on a daily basis, “That our female customers continue to return if they know they have an option to liaise with either a male or female sale consultant. In addition to the Sales Manager, Kylie Cullen, we lead a team of both genders in our dealership and the results show in the deals completed.”

Brett Frizelle also supports this. “We are very happy with the balance we have in Gold Coast Volkswagen, who have also recently won Volkswagen Group Australia’s Major Metro Dealer of the Year. However, we have other dealerships with limited female sales and service consultants, therefore employing more women in these customer focused areas makes good business sense.”

The girls at Get it Magazine have declared their love for a bubbly tipple at knock off on Friday afternoons and what better way to start this ongoing wine feature journey than venture into the very fashionable world of Prosecco sparkling wine.

nlike Champagne, its main commercial competitor, Prosecco is made from one grape of its name usually produced using the Charmat method, in which the secondary fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, making the wine less expensive to produce.

Times have been tougher recently, with many having tightened their purse strings. This is an economical way to indulge − enjoy a less expensive but nevertheless extremely chic alternative to Champagne.The best thing about Prosecco is it can cater to all manner of tastes, ranging from Brut which has up to 12 grams of residual sugar, to extra dry which ranges from 12 to 17 grams of sugar; to dry which deceivingly is not dry at 17 to 32 grams of residual sugar.

With this diversity, Prosecco holds many pairing options with food and is a delicious quaffer on its own.

One of my fondest moments in Italy was sitting beside Lake Como and sipping my first classic aperitivo in Italy, a spritz, which is a modest cocktail simply consisting of Aperol aperativo served with fresh citrus rinds topped with a quality Prosecco.

Unfortunately I was not with George Clooney watching the manicured woman strutting by, but it filled me with an overwhelming sense of happiness knowing this drink is delicious, uncomplicated but sophisticated all at once. The fashion and buzz of the Piazza added to my contentment, of course. This is the true aperativo in Italy at sunset whetting your palate for the more serious dining that is to come.

Australia has caught onto producing this delicious drink and the King Valley in Victoria are stamping this varietal and style as their own.

In 2000, inspired by a childhood growing up in the town of Valdobbiadene, the

birthplace of Prosecco, Otto Dal Zotto planted the first Prosecco vines in the King Valley. Its fresh, crisp, palate proved instantly popular with those seeking a relaxed yet stylish, celebratory drink. Since that first planting, five other King Valley winemakers have followed suit − Brown Brothers, Chrismont, Ciccone, Pizzini and Sam Miranda. They now have their own unique tourist experience in the King Valley Victoria whereby you can travel from winery to winery celebrating each winery’s individualistic expression of the grape. • 15 mls Canton ginger liqueur • 15 mls Aperol Aperativo • A splash of mandarin juice Pour your choice of Prosecco and ingredients over a few cubes of ice in a wine glass or larger flute with twists of orange and lime rind.

Prosecco is a very old elixir that we from the new world should now be ready to embrace. Salute!

Prosecco is so fashionable in the United States that they actually have Paris Hilton advertising it in a can. Modelling it in a bathing suit of course for me not so sexy; let’s keep to drinking from a glass flute please!

Zucchini fritters

vegan gluten free recipe

Delicious vegan gluten free fritters served with hummus and oven dried tomatoes. Perfect for breakfast, lunch or a light meal.

SAUTEE • 4 zucchini • 2 tbsp oil Flax/chia egg • 1 tsp chia seeds, ground • 1 tsp flax seeds, ground • 4 tbsp warm filtered water DRY INGREDIENTS • ½ cup rice flour • ½ cup buckwheat flour • 1 tsp vegetable stock powder • 1 tsp oregano • ½ tsp thyme • ½ tsp sage For cooking • Olive or coconut oil Instructions Wash, peel then grate zucchini. Heat up oil in a pan and quickly sautee zucchini, make sure it’s not cooked through.

In the meantime create a flax/chia egg – add the warm water and ground chia and flax.

Add flour and other ingredients to zucchini, add the flax/chia egg. Mix through thoroughly and leave rest for ten minutes.

Heat a frying pan and lightly oil.

Spoon the mixture to the frying pan. Cook for four minutes on each side.

Once the fritters are done, top with hummus and oven dried tomatoes (recipe on website).

Serve immediately.

Pumpkin gnocchi

with portobello mushrooms

Hearty, simple and delicious, this pumpkin gnocchi and portobello mushroom combo is vegan and gluten free.

Sure to be a perfect winter family meal.

INGREDIENTS • 300g potato • 300g pumpkin • 1 cup rice flour • ½ cup coconut flour • ½ cup buckwheat flour • 2 tsp ground flax • 1 tsp salt MUSHROOMS • 2 cups chopped portobello mushrooms • 2 tsp olive oil • pinch of salt

Roast Pumpkin Spiced Soup Recipe

Vegan Gluten Free

This roast pumpkin spiced soup recipe is really a way for Vanja to sneak tofu into her food without her husband noticing. To be accompanied with fluffy socks and preferably a warm fire.

INGREDIENTS • 500g Pumpkin • 1 white onion • 4 garlic cloves • 200g Tofu (Vanja used Macro Vegetarian Hard Tofu) • 150g frozen spinach • 1 zucchini (medium size, skinless) • 2 tablespoons biryani spice paste • 3 tablespoons olive oil • To garnish: 3-4 pistachios, chopped; ground flaxseeds; paprika; round chia seeds

INSTRUCTIONS Gnocchi Roast the pumpkin in the oven for about 40 minutes on 180 degrees.

Peel and cube the potatoes then boil in filtered water.

Mash or puree the pumpkin and potato.

Add flours, flax and salt to the puree.

Set aside for ten minutes.

Boil some water and add a pinch of salt.

Pop the dough on a floured surface (Vanja used some rice flour) and roll out long strips of dough, about two cm thick.

Cut the dough strips into two cm pieces.

Push a fork down on each piece. A clean fork works best.

Once the water is boiling drop ten pieces of dough into the water at a time.

When you see the gnocchi rise up to the surface it means they are done. Scoop them up and place in a bowl.

Mushrooms Heat the oil in a pan, then add chopped mushrooms.

Sautee until the liquid is cooked off, then add salt.

Finish the dish Add mushrooms to the gnocchi, stir carefully.

Add chopped parsley and serve.

Method: Preheat oven to 180 deg C. Grease a 24 cm baking dish.

Combine all ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until smooth. Pour into the dish.

Bake for one hour or until a knife inserted comes out clean. Cool to room temperature before serving.

Sharni Hardcastle is a pretty remarkable 22-year-old!

She was the winner of the 2013 Gold Coast Women in Business ‘Empowering Young Women’ award and is now studying medical science at Griffith University. Sharni aims to enlighten other young women on why they should seriously consider studying for PhDs Congratulations on your Women in Business award! How much did that mean to you?

I was ecstatic. I cannot even explain how rewarding it was for me to get appreciation and recognition for my hard work! It was great to be acknowledged amongst such amazing and inspiring ladies in the business world and I am so thankful and lucky to have been a part of it. Hopefully I have inspired them to be the best that they can be too.

Is studying medical science something you have always wanted to do?

From high school I knew I wanted to get into medical research because I found it so interesting to be behind the scenes of the health industry. I enjoy researching things that have never been done before. I have continued by doing my honours and now my PhD with the National Centre for Neuroimmunology and Emerging Diseases (NCNED) specialising in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

Why is it important for you to encourage other women to aim for a PhD? It is a great way to prove to yourself what you are capable of. You learn great time management and to cope with stressful situations as well as continually gaining knowledge and experience in your chosen field. You get the opportunity to plan and take ownership of a research project that is the first of its kind, and that in itself is exciting. I believe if girls are thinking of doing a PhD then they definitely should go down that path. They will come out of it being very proud of what they have managed to learn and achieve. The rewards definitely outweigh the hard work.

How have your achievements influenced others around you?

I have a younger sister who is starting her second year of Marine Biology at Griffith and a younger brother in high school. I think June 2014

What’s your approach when studying becomes overwhelming?

Support from friends and family helps a lot.

I think it’s also important to take a step back and look at the big picture. A particular time may be hard and stressful, but when I remember that I am helping others while achieving my own goals, it definitely helps. Work hard so you can 50

look back and be proud of yourself. You don’t want to finish a degree with a particular mark and wish you had tried harder. Determination is the key; never to give up.

What have you found is the best motivation when studying for a PhD? I know that my research is contributing to better outcomes in the future; helping and treating many more people. There are many people who are so grateful for our research and they are continually thanking us for our work and care. That is enough to keep anyone going.
