PHOTOGRA PH Y
A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS WITH ANDY MACPHERSON (AIPP ACCREDITED) OF ANDY MACPHERSON STUDIO
What ignited your passion – and career – in architectural photography? I have always loved architecture and photography and the opportunity to combine the two came after a friend - who is an engineer - asked me to write a marketing brief for a video he was doing about engineering. I photographed some buildings to decorate the brief and I was hooked! It is now not only my passion but a thriving small business. It’s great fun! Being one of the most prolific architectural photographers on the Gold Coast, what would you say makes our region’s designs so unique? I think good architects understand the subtropical climate here and their designs revolve around a clever use of floor plans and openings to make best use of breezes and cross-ventilation. It is very different to somewhere like Melbourne where the climate is different - typically cooler - and where indoor/outdoor living is less relevant. In terms of the type of building, as far as aesthetics (or typology as an architect would say) I think the Gold Coast is still finding its way. We do have some incredible projects scattered throughout the region and more and more keep 1 0 | GE T I T L I VI N G

M +61421 916 966 W andy-macpherson.com E andy@andy-macpherson.com andymacphersonstudio popping up. I am passionate about showing people how amazing the architecture of the Gold Coast can be. From your experience, what design elements are starting to come to the forefront and really trend throughout the region? I am seeing lots of high quality, timeless materials being used on the Gold Coast; great timber, concrete and even copper. All of these materials get better with age. I have seen some quite innovative stuff coming from Studio Workshop around prefabricated design too.
What have been the most memorable properties you have photographed recently? The standouts on the Gold Coast have been Cove House by Justin Humphrey Architect, Albatross Ave by Studio Workshop, North Burleigh by Bureau Proberts and Mermaid House by B.E. Architecture. Through your trained lens, what is it that really makes a property stand out from the rest? For me, it’s about how the property fits in its environment and how it compares to the houses around it. I think the best buildings, aside from having great scale (don’t feel too big or too small) and materials, politely stand out. They don’t push so hard, designwise, in an opposite direction that they stick out like a sore thumb but instead they consider the buildings around them and the landscape they’re set in and they fit in and stand out, all at the same time. What are some exciting projects that are taking shape on the Gold Coast now? It’s hard to discuss residential work in progress, but I have seen some great projects popping up from Justin Humphrey, Studio Workshop and B.E. Architecture. In terms of more public, commercial architecture I am interested to see The Jewel towers by DBI Design when it is finished. That would be a fun one to photograph!

The Hamptons on the Gold Coast Though the actual Hamptons may be 15,000 kilometres away, there’s no denying the laidback luxurious homes along the breezy coast of Long Island would feel right at home here in Queensland. In fact, it could be argued that the East Coast US architectural style is now even more popular here on the Gold Coast than in its original location – and it’s not difficult to see why. With our prime beachside location coveted by the country’s glitterati, the Gold Coast is without a doubt Australia’s answer to The Hamptons. Part of the appeal of The Hamptons style – and the reason it resonates with so many of us – is its ability to transcend many interior approaches, be it a classic, beach-house, modern or opulence. The simple colour palette of whites, greys and blues, coupled with timeless fixtures and fittings like plantation shutters, silver hardware and butler’s sinks, creates a calming atmosphere and innate elegance coveted by many. So for those dreaming of injecting a little seaside glamour into your abode, we’ve rounded up the best of The Hamptons, here on the Gold Coast.

ARCHITECT IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME OR EMBARK ON A RENOVATION PROJECT, SPEAKING WITH AN ARCHITECT ABOUT YOUR OPTIONS IS A PRUDENT FIRST STEP. GET IT LIVING’S RESIDENT ARCHITECT, GEORGE KOUPARITSAS, IS ON HAND TO ANSWER YOUR DESIGN QUESTIONS AND GET YOU STARTED ON THE RIGHT TRACK
QUESTION:
We’re looking to renovate our home – what are some smart design decisions we can make to generate a greater return on our dollar? Karla, Broadbeach 1 4 | GE T I T L I VI N G
George Kouparitsas, Architect | gkarch.com.au
GEORGE SAYS: Let me talk you through a few key factors to think about first and foremost: 1. PRESERVE STRUCTURAL WALLS AND EXISTING ROOF FORMS. It can be tempting to completely gut a home to ensure it fits your purpose – however this can be unnecessarily costly and impractical. If a wall is load-bearing, it’s preferable to keep it intact to reduce construction costs. Introducing structural elements such as steel beams increases costs, which may not convert to profits in the overall value of the home.
Photo: Rochele Decorating/George Kouparitsas Architect
2. POSITION YOUR WET AREAS IN SIMILAR LOCATIONS. If it’s possible to leverage your home’s existing plumbing, then this will be the most cost-effective renovation option. If additional wet areas are required, you should consider grouping the wet areas – for example, placing the main bathroom adjacent to an en suite or laundry.
A large deck is a smart inclusion to make the most of the Gold Coast’s balmy environment.
3. RE-USE ORIGINAL BUILDING MATERIALS. Look for the opportunity to reuse the materials from the original home in your renovation. Not only is it the most sustainable option, it will also help ensure your home retains its character. For example, you may be able to reuse VJ wall panelling, original pine floorboards, double hung windows or even the front fence palings. Not only does this save money on materials, it also helps reduce costs on dumping fees. It’s surprising how much material is dumped on building sites, which not only hurts the environment but also your hip pocket. 4. BE SYMPATHETIC TO YOUR SURROUNDS. The Gold Coast has unique environmental demands so always ensure this is considered when planning a renovation or a new build. For example, lots of windows and even plantation shutters will help ensure your property maintains its cool and the aircon will only be required for those very hot days and nights. Large decks that provide an outdoor entertaining area will also ensure a great return on your investment. 5. TO RAISE OR NOT TO RAISE? While raising your house to generate more space to build in is often a great option, think carefully about how this will impact the street appeal of your property. Not all homes will retain their charm if they are raised, which can destroy the street appeal of your house by interfering with its original relationship with the street. 6. TO KNOCK DOWN AND REBUILD OR RENOVATE? I’m a huge advocate for retaining and rejuvenating existing dwellings where possible. A smart design can often be cheaper than a new build and is also a more sustainable option. Not only can you save money with a renovation project, it also gives you options to live in the dwelling through the construction process, saving more dollars on the overall cost. My advice is to only knock down if it is totally necessary to achieving your dream house vision. APRIL 2019 | 15

A The ART of transforming a mid-century home into a
MODERN MASTERPIECE
LOOK DOWN ANY STREET ON THE GOLD COAST AND CHANCES ARE YOU’LL COME ACROSS AT LEAST ONE MID-CENTURY STYLE HOME. IN FACT, THESE CLASSIC DWELLINGS OFTEN FORM THE FABRIC OF MANY OF OUR SUBURBS, GIVEN THEY WERE THE STYLE OF CHOICE FOR ARCHITECTS AND BUILDERS DURING THE COAST’S PEAK DEVELOPMENT ERA. 1 8 | GE T I T L I VI N G
s their name suggests, mid-century homes are not young starlets, having been constructed between 1945 and 1975. And while this style of abode may have fallen out of favour over the years, the clever use of open plan rooms and seamless indoor/outdoor transitions have put the homes back in favour with wellheeled architectural aficionados. Architect George Kouparitsas says we’re seeing a resurgence of renovations on the Gold Coast aimed at injecting new life into these old homes by evoking the laid back luxury of the golden years of Palm Springs or the heady lifestyle brought to life in Mad Men. “Mid-century homes can have a timeless appeal as they typically feature a functional design that focuses on natural materials and simple structural form,” says Mr Kouparitsas. “Today, this serves as a prime foundation for home owners looking to renovate or extend, whether they are seeking to update it to a minimalist, Scandinavian feel, or hark back to the stylish retro vibe of the 1950s.” So how can you update your original mid-century house into a modern masterpiece? Here are four simple ways to transform a classic mid-century Gold Coast property into a fresh and inspiring architectural delight.
After
Before
EMBRACE THE BRICKWORK. Many mid-century homes feature lots of blonde or dark brickwork, which can make a home feel tired, musty and dark. The default of many amateur designers is to cover up the brick, by rendering exterior brickwork, or plasterboarding interior brick walls. “While this is an effective tactic for modernising the aesthetic, it will strip your house of its character; instead, you can preserve the architect’s original mid-century design intent if you retain the brickwork and simply update it,” says architect George Kouparitsas. “Consider painting the brick a bright white to give the illusion of extra space and a modern feel. This works for both internal and external brick work. You may also consider leaving a feature wall in the original unpainted condition, to provide some rustic or industrial character to a room.” ADD SKYLIGHTS TO BRING THE OUTSIDE IN. The Gold Coast has one of the most enviable climates in the world, so ensuring your home makes the most of its sunny skies with big

DE S I GN DIRECTORY George Kouparitsas Architect gkarch.com.au Koda Design kodadesign.com.au Rochele Painting rochelepainting.com.au Velux Skylights velux.com.au windows and doors is imperative. But due to the design of many midcentury homes, adding windows and doors to some rooms isn’t always possible. The solution? Sky lights. “Never underestimate the powerful ability of roof windows to instantly transform even the smallest and darkest rooms, by opening them up and flooding them with light,” says Dane Power, Director of Koda Design. “In the Cunard House, we used Velux Skylights in the den to not only bring the outside in, but also add a stylish talking point for guests.”
PRESERVE ORIGINAL FEATURES WHERE POSSIBLE. Does your home have a vaulted ceiling that looks a bit retro? Fight the urge to purge, as vaulted ceilings are back in vogue, and cost a pretty penny to install. Instead, freshen it up with a lick of paint and install some feature pendants to draw attention to this indemand architectural feature. ADD PERSONALITY BY MIXING YOUR FINISHES. While many home owners take a minimalist approach when it comes to picking finishings, mid-century homes provide the perfect opportunity to mix and match the textures of cabinets, benchtops and tiles. “The key here is to keep one element throughout your house – such as wall colour – simple and consistent, so your other finishes aren’t competing for attention,” says Ali Festa from Rochele Painting. “We often recommend bright, white walls to add the illusion of space and to complement other finishes such as timber cabinetry and marble benchtops in kitchens, or colourful feature tiles in bathrooms and laundries.” APRIL 2019 | 19
