I don’t think there’s a chocolate treat I prefer more, than a medium sized, hollow, Cadbury Easter egg.

Each year, I start snatching them off the shelves as quickly as they appear (pretty much the day after Christmas!).

And I feel pretty good about it too. After all, it’s a hollow egg, not a Cadbury Cream Egg, and I’m a firm believer in balance.

The problem is though, the aftermath of Christmas always leaves the scales tipped a little to the wrong side – not enough water, not enough veggies, not enough exercise.

I am trying though. I’ve joined the gym! It’s women only, and an older demographic, so it’s comfy activewear, messy hair, and no makeup.

No fuss, pressure!

And while I do drag my feet, and happily look for excuses to give it a miss on any given day, I’m well aware of the benefits of an active lifestyle.

Not just on our bodies, but our minds as well.

I think most of us would agree that when we do force ourselves to move a bit more, eat a little better, and swap the diet sodas for water, we end up with a little more spring in our step.

Our heads are a little clearer, our moods a little lighter.

This year, I bit the bullet, and enjoyed (endured?) a dry February.

Now, I don’t drink all that much as a rule, but the festive season had seen the introduction of ‘wine Wednesday’, on top of ‘champagne Friday’ and the usual weekend frivolity - so a change was in order.

By the end of the month, while I will admit to craving a chilled glass of rose’, I did feel overwhelmingly better for it – both physically, and mentally.

Conversely, in March, I celebrated my fiance’s 40th birthday, and took the opposite approach, enjoyed a few (too many) wines, and spent the ENTIRE next day paying the price.

Age has a way of catching up with you.

For some of us, the mind/body connection in relation to good health is more extreme than others.

In this month’s issue we meet Justine, who embraced exercise to beat alcohol addiction and depression.

We also speak with Karina, who pole danced her way to health and happiness in her fifties.

Now, I’m not sure I’ll be swinging around a pole anytime soon, but I am determined to keep my morning gym sessions going, limit the booze, and increase my veggie intake.

At least for another month!

Founder of Mixed Bag Copy, Gold Coast local Laura Buttigieg talks to Get It Magazine about travelling the world, finding her ‘why’, and the evolution of her writing business.

1. What’s the origin story of Mixed Bag Copy?

I was living in the Cayman Islands when the pandemic began, and the island closed down. I returned to Australia and was lucky to work as a media officer, but being unsure of future travel plans, I decided to launch my own business. I have always been a writer of some sort - journalist, travel writer, court reporter, ghost writer - so I decided to focus on the things I love creating the most, hence the name Mixed Bag Copy.

2. What’s a challenge you’ve overcome to launch your own successful business?

The biggest challenge for me was taking myself seriously, as strange as that sounds.

I had a hard time charging people for my

work, so there was a transition in seeing value in myself and my services.

3. You’ve done some amazing travel, tell us about that.

I started working as a cadet journalist after university and took a gap year that turned into 13! I worked in London, the French Alps, the Greek Islands, Canada, and the Cayman Islands, and travelled in between jobs. After my daughter was born, I wanted to travel as much as I could before she started school. At two years old she did the five day Salkantay hike to Machu Picchu in Peru, we drove across the salt flats in Bolivia and hiked volcanoes and ancient ruins in Guatemala.

4. What does an average day in your life look like?

Mornings are spent with my daughter, I usually don’t take work calls or emails until after school drop. I’ll write or edit for the majority of the day - there’s usually a mix of Zoom calls and consults with clients, other days I’ll create content most of the day or film.

5. Why is the Gold Coast special to you?

I spent most of my childhood here so it has so many special memories for me. Talley Creek is a favourite spot to kayak with my daughter, Burleigh Hill for picnics, and Kirra for the beach. I’m anywhere with great coffee, margaritas and tacos!

6. What inspires you?

My friends. The women in my life who cheer for me - I am so lucky to be surrounded by so many inspirational mentors. I also take so much inspiration from books. I read as much as I can - memoirs, biographies, and self development, those authors who stay with you years after you’ve closed the book.

7. What’s your advice to someone looking to start their own business?

Get clear on your “why” and don’t compare yourself to others. You are unique, so your business will be too. Find your own voice and help raise others up - there’s so much room for kindness in business. mixedbagcopy.com

Katrina Bart

No matter your age, finding a sport or exercise you love is essential to maintaining momentum and holistic health. Now 52, Katrina Bart shares with Holly Bartter her passion for pole fitness and the strength it’s provided her both inside and out.

Looking back, Katrina Bart attributes her discovery of pole dancing to a darker period in her life which challenged her to step outside of her comfort zone.

“I experienced depression and low selfesteem a few years ago, and while working with a psychologist, I decided to push my own personal boundaries,” Katrina says.

“I did a canyon leap in New Zealand, had a python draped around my neck in Vietnam, and also decided to try pole dancing! An ad for a local studio popped up on my Facebook feed and I thought - well, that’s a sign! So, I joined a beginner’s class at 48.”

While an important part of her life today, Katrina never imagined this would be the sport she’d gravitate towards and enjoy so much.

Pole dancing surprised her in more ways than one, she says.

“I was surprised at the physical strength required, but more than that, what an amazing community it is, and how supportive all the women are towards each other. I never thought in a million years that it would be something I’d do!”

popular and increasingly mainstream way of sweating it out and learning a new skill.

And according to Katrina, people of all ages are getting in on the action.

“It’s becoming a lot more popular for women over 40 and more men are joining as well,” she recalls.

“Prior to COVID there was a competition running - the category of ‘master’ (for individuals over 40) had the biggest number of applicants.”

For Katrina, the shift in her mental and physical health is noticeable.

“It’s really an all over fitness regime, and mentally it’s made a huge difference, it really helped with my selfconfidence.”

Her advice to those looking to give it a go?

“Do some research on the studio you’re keen to try, and don’t worry you don’t have to wear skimpy clothes when you start!

“Don’t concern yourself with not being strong enough - that’s why you join!”

We were teaching for a friend at her studio on the Gold Coast and she decided to close the business - we loved the concept of inclusive pole fitness for both males and females and with a lack of this on the Gold Coast we bought the equipment off our friend and started Rokh Fit!

Pole fitness is a great mix of strength and cardiovascular fitness. It helps build muscle, improves bone density, develops flexibility and mobility, and helps circulation through the cardio workout.

Pole fitness also boosts confidence and releases endorphins.

2. How has the business developed over time?

From the beginning we wanted to create a space where anyone can join a class and feel comfortable no matter their shape or size, gender, ability or fitness level. Five years later we have stayed true to this and pride ourselves on having an inviting and friendly studio. We have students as young as 10 right up to 60 years of age.

The first thing is to expect to feel welcomed by both our staff and students. We start the class with a fun dance warm-up followed by strength and conditioning, we then teach a series of pole tricks and then we add them together to create a fun mini routine. We are all about positivity. There’s lots of cheering when someone masters a move, and lots of

Pole fitness has been big in major cities for about 15 years and we have definitely seen a rise in the last five years on the coast. With tens of thousands of skin products available these days, it can be difficult to figure out the best way to take care of your skin.

Skin is our body’s largest organ and it’s our main defense for protecting us from all of the nasty elements of the outside world.

Our skin helps to keep microbes, bacteria and other environmental hazards out. Skin also protects us from ultraviolet (UV) rays, as well as converting those rays into vitamin D, which our bodies need to stay healthy and strong.

Achieving optimal skin health is a combination of what you put into your body as well as what you put on your body. Let’s look a bit closer at some of the best foods to add to your grocery list to keep the inner and outer you healthy and radiant.

SALMON Fatty fish, like salmon is one of the best foods to eat – for overall health and especially for healthy skin. Salmon and other fatty fish are good sources of omega-3 fats.

Omega-3 fat acids are essential to keep skin thick and hydrated. Research shows that an omega-3 deficiency can cause dry skin. The omega-3 fats in fish also reduce inflammation, which can cause and aggravate acne.

AVOCADOS An avocado a day can help you feel better from the inside out. Avocados are often a popular ingredient in many face masks but they’re just as good for you on the inside.

Avocados are full of healthy fats, and those fats are essential to help keep skin flexible and moisturised. In fact, a study with over 700 women found that a higher intake the types of healthy fats found in avocados was associated with suppler, springier skin.

If that wasn’t enough there is also research showing that avocados contain compounds that may help protect your skin from sun damage.

TOMATOES Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a potent antioxidant that protects skin from UV damage. One study found that people who ate five tomatoes and specifically tomato paste regularly showed significantly more protection against sunburn than a control group.

In one study, after 12 weeks of consuming cocoa containing these antioxidants, participants experienced thicker, more hydrated skin. It was also shown that their skin was also smoother, more resistant to sunburn, and had improved circulation.

BONE BROTH Not just bone broth but any food that is rich in collagen is a skin super food. Collagen is rich in amino acids, glycine proline and hydroxyproline. Your body can absorb these important amino acids and use them, together with vitamin C and other nutrients to form new collagen in your skin.

Studies have shown that consuming collagen can improve skin elasticity, moisture and firmness, while reducing wrinkles.

Many people, including myself, have been led to believe that the physical and aesthetic side of health and fitness is the most important aspect.

With social media being so prominent in our lives, it is hard not to get caught up with wanting to look a certain way.

We see perfection, we see the best of people’s lives, we see their best angles, basically we see everything that they want us to see.

But no one seems to mention mindset, mentality, and the inside struggles people face that come with health and fitness.

Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness and should not be neglected.

Having a healthy mindset gives you the capability to change your perspective on life. Your mindset and inner wellbeing make up a huge part of your health and fitness, and also positively impacts the way you see yourself, your life situation, and your goals.

Studies and research show that a change in mindset can help people cope and overcome depression, addiction, anxiety, and many other conditions.

But how is this achieved?

Firstly, there are what is called behavioural changes.

To successfully change your mindset, you need to be able to identify your negative behaviours. Identifying and understanding these traits are highly important as how you recognise these behaviours is going to be a vital part in your capacity to make change.

Secondly, identifying and creating realistic and specific goals.

GET IT I REAL LIFE Reflecting on her life seven years ago, Justine Whitchurch is almost in disbelief at the memory of such troubling times. “It was so far removed from the life I have now... alcohol ruled every decision I made,” she says.

“From the moment I woke up until I went to bed, apart from ensuring my two young children had everything they needed, being numb was my only mission.”

For Justine, alcohol addiction turned her world upside down, and impacted not only her mental wellbeing but physical health as well.

“The doctors told me that my life was now on the line if I did not turn things around.”

A cornerstone of Justine’s transformation and recovery has been a dedication to health and fitness, introduced to her during a session with her therapist. “It was suggested that I should exercise, and reluctantly at the time, I took this advice and joined the gym.”

Such a dramatic shift in lifestyle doesn’t come easy, but Justine soon saw the fruits of her efforts, both mental and physical.

“I was not a willing participant at the start, but I couldn’t anticipate how fitness would become the core foundation of my wellness. With every rep, I not only gained physical strength, but I developed more resilience mentally. I am so much stronger than I ever believed I could be.”

Today, Justine is a professional fitness coach and author of her first book, Sobriety Delivered Everything Alcohol Promised, and her new career fills her cup in more ways than one.

“It powers me to get up every day and make a difference”, she shares, “Being able to help others find their way is what makes me tick - I always feel drawn to those that need lifting up.”

Her daily routine accommodates business, family and down-time.

“During the week I rise early - that was something I never did. Some days I have clients face to face or via Zoom but if I don’t, I’ll do an hour beach walk - I walk a minimum of 15000 steps a day! Then it’s breakfast, school drop-off and the gym. After that I’ll plonk myself down in a café for a day of content writing, programming and coaching calls. I make a point of winding down early in the evening.”

Reflecting on her career today, Justine emphasises the importance of staying openminded as we all walk life’s path.

“We’re conditioned to believe that what we thought we wanted to do in our 20s is what we should still be wanting in our 40s or later. Life changes and so do you. I know for me, living the second half of my life in a state where there is more calm and peace is vital.”

Looking to the future, Justine’s focus is to be a role-model and live a full and healthy life.

“One of the greatest benefits about being sober is having an insurmountable drive to achieve more. Beetroot Hummus

with Roasted Chickpeas and hemp seeds Sesame-free Hummus Chickpeas (garbanzo beans) make a lovely protein-rich dip that can be used to accompany crackers and vegie sticks.

Prep: 10 mins Serves: Makes 1 cup

Ingredients

Method

1 x 400 g can organic chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed

Place all the ingredients into a food processor and blend until smooth. Store the dip in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Hummus will last for 4 - 5 days.

1 small clove garlic, minced (begin with ½ and adjust to taste) 1 tablespoon rice bran oil (or refer to ‘Cooking oil options for your skin type’ below) 5 tablespoons (100 ml) filtered or spring water

Variation Beetroot Hummus

Make Sesame-free Hummus as above. Then peel and grate a small fresh beetroot and add 2–3 tablespoons of the grated beetroot to the hummus and blend until smooth

Roasted Chickpeas Roasted chickpeas (garbanzo beans) are a low GI, protein-rich snack that is easy to make.

Prep: 5 mins Cooking Time: 30 mins Serves: Makes 4 servings

Ingredients 1 x 400 g can organic chickpeas (garbanzo beans) drained and rinsed 1 teaspoon oil (refer to ‘Cooking oil options for your skin type’ below) 1/4 teaspoon quality sea salt (fine, not coarse)

Method Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a large baking tray with a silicon mat or baking (parchment) paper and set aside.

Drain and rinse the chickpeas thoroughly in fresh water using a strainer/colander and gently pat dry with a clean tea towel.

Place the chickpeas into a sealable container along with the oil and salt, secure the lid and gently shake to evenly coat the chickpeas with the seasoning and oil. Then spread the chickpeas in a single layer on the tray.

Bake for 20 minutes, then roughly attempt to flip over the chickpeas with an egg flip and cook for another 10 minutes or until crunchy.

Serve warm or cold and store the remainder in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Cashew Butter

This delicious nutty spread is a fantastic butter and margarine substitute and (in my humble opinion) it’s much nicer than almond butter. Spread this mineral-rich butter onto celery sticks or toast, such as Sweet Potato Toast Prep: 10 mins Serves: Makes 1 jar

Once the spread has thinned out and is fairly smooth, transfer it to a clean/dry jar or container, seal with a lid and store in the refrigerator.

Ingredients

Cashew Butter can be kept for 2–3 weeks in the refrigerator, or maybe longer if you have sterilized the jar and lid correctly. It probably won’t last that long … I eat mine pretty quickly.

1 1/2 cups raw cashews (unsalted, do not soak) 2 teaspoons oil (refer to ‘Cooking oil options for your skin type’ below) 1/4 teaspoon quality sea salt

Variation

Method Place the cashews, oil and salt into a highspeed food processor or nut butter blender and blend on high until it resembles breadcrumbs.

Salted Caramel Nut Butter Make Cashew Butter as above and add 3 teaspoons of real maple syrup, 2 tablespoons of filtered or spring water, ½ teaspoon of carob powder and two pinches of coarse sea salt (optional) during the processing stage for a sweet and salty nut butter which is perfect for spreading onto toast.

Be patient as it can take time for the spread to liquefy. Frequently switch off the food processor and scrape down the sides then blend again until it forms a thick spread. If it turns into a ball, continue to blend it and then scrape down the sides.

Caramelized Leek Sauce

This chunky and deliciously sweet sauce makes any dish taste amazing.

Prep: 3 mins Cookin Time: 7 mins Serves: Makes 1 cup

Ingredients 1 medium leek, green leafy part removed, end trimmed

Cooking oil options for your skin type

1 tablespoon filtered or spring water

Look up your skin type to find the right cooking oil for you:

1–2 tablespoons real maple syrup 1/4 teaspoon quality sea salt

Acne or oily skin types: no cooking oil is best (water fry instead) or use a little extra virgin olive oil as it won’t make your skin oilier. Coconut oil may be okay but best to limit it and avoid all other oils.

Method Wash the leek layers to remove the dirt then finely slice the white parts and palest green parts of the leek. Heat the water in a saucepan on medium heat, and saute the leek until very soft.

Eczema, psoriasis and other skin rashes: no cooking oil (water fry instead) or use rice bran oil and pure sunflower oil (check there is no antioxidant), as they are the low salicylate and low amine options that also boost skin hydration. Use in moderation only.

Add the maple syrup and sea salt and cook on low heat for another few minutes until it’s sticky and golden.

Beet Cream

Dry skin types or ageing skin (no rashes): pure sunflower oil (no antioxidant) or rice bran oil are the first choices. Coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil may be suitable if you do not have eczema or skin inflammation (see also ‘Normal skin types’ below).

This chunky and deliciously sweet sauce makes any dish taste amazing.

Normal skin types (no skin inflammation): coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil (they are high in salicylates and amines but if you do not have chemical intolerance they are good choices). Both of these oils burn easily as they have a low smoking point (the pan will billow smoke quite quickly) so if you need to use high heat opt for rice bran oil as it has a high smoking point, therefore it is safer to cook with.

Prep: 3 mins Cooking Time: 7 mins Serves: Makes 1 cup

Ingredients 1/4 cup raw cashews (soaked in hot water for 20 minutes) 2 1/2 tablespoons finely grated beetroot (S) 1/4 teaspoon quality sea salt 1 fresh clove garlic, crushed, or 1 teaspoon of garlic powder

» Paleo note: paleo oils are coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil and paleo milks are hemp milk, cashew milk and coconut milk.

1/2 cup filtered or spring water

Method

» Vegan note: all mentioned oils (above) and milks (below) are vegan-friendly so refer to your skin type for your best options.

To prepare the Beet Cream, drain the cashews and add the grated beetroot, salt, garlic and water to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.
