LETTER FROM

Nicole Editor It’s hard to believe it’s already April. The first few months of 2022 have been a whirlwind of activity both domestically and abroad. There’s been COVID-19 (again), devastating floods, and tragically, even a war; meanwhile our lives have been forced into full swing, despite the seemingly never-ending catastrophes unfolding around us. With children’s sports back on, school assessments underway and work as busy as ever, the juggle is real. So, for many of us, those self-made promises to get healthy and hit the gym, have gone largely unfulfilled. I’ve been telling myself I’ll start my at-home workouts once I get back into a routine, but it’s starting to feel like that day is never going to come. Life is simply too unpredictable these days. OPEN 7 DAYS | 9:30AM TO 5PM

We’re thinking a few of you will be in the same boat, which is why we’ve dedicated our April issue to health and wellness.

32 Masthead Way, The Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove • Ph 5577 8981

Inside, you’ll find some great tips on keeping consistent, getting healthy, and – my personal favourite – how to get more sleep. I always say, if only there were another two hours in the day, I’d definitely be adding exercise to my list of things to do five days of the week… but of course, I know that’s just an excuse. Because as one of my favourite quotes say, it’s not that you don’t have time, it’s just not a priority. And after reading this issue, I guess it’s time to write a new list, and get my priorities in order.

DR SUE MASEL

My Life in

Rural Medicine Making her mark on medicine in Goondiwindi, Get It speaks with leading Rural Generalist and Secretary of the Rural Doctors Foundation, Dr Sue Masel. Sue shares with us her work with RDF, what a day in her life looks like, and how women come together in rural communities. 1. Take us through a day in your life in Goondiwindi. I work as a GP both in the community in General Practice and at the hospital where I also provide a specialist service, which in my case is anaesthetics. My day starts with an early morning run along the McIntyre river, followed by a 5-minute drive to the hospital where I do a ward round of the inpatients with the junior doctors before traveling to the Medical Centre. There I spend the day seeing GP patients and supervising doctors in training. Some days I provide an education session or get called back to the hospital to do an epidural for a woman in labour. Most evenings end with a catch up with my GP husband on the front verandah overlooking our lovely garden.

2. Can you share with us your role at the Rural Doctors Foundation, and the important work they do? GET IT April 2022

RDF initially grew out of the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland around the time of my RDAQ Presidency. Being involved in RDAQ gave me a lot of insight into the challenges being faced in Rural Communities all over Queensland. The RDF is perfectly positioned to identify and support health initiatives in rural communities at a grass roots level. I see its work as an important way to wrap some meaningful support around all rural Australians in an environment where all Australians recognise the health disparities between urban and rural locations.

3. How does medical care differ most dramatically in rural areas? There are less doctors and allied health practitioners per capita in rural locations, large distances involved to access specialist services and fewer options for services to be delivered locally. The recognition of Rural Generalism as a discipline with an agreed definition and a unique training pathway is helping to train the medical workforce we need in the country. The other big innovation has been the addition of telehealth based services. Most urban Australians couldn’t imagine driving 100km for a GP appointment, but that’s what many of my patients routinely do - to be able to conduct some of their care using a video consultation is revolutionary.

10

4. Are there specific medical concerns or challenges women face when living in rural areas? Yes - reproductive health and mental health are challenges. In lots of places there is limited access to female GPs. Specialised services like fertility treatment can be very hard to access. Initiatives like offering a fly-in woman’s health service to remote communities can help, and we can continue to advocate for innovation.

5. What would you say to a woman who was keen to pursue a line of medicine in a rural community? I’d say go for it! There are challenges and a very broad skillset is required. But the thing which will surprise you is how willing rural communities are to help you find solutions and how much they value your service.

6. As a leader in your industry and your community, who inspires you? Rural doctors like Ruth Stewart who have not only stood the test of time in the practice of rural medicine but been willing to take on representation and leadership roles show me the horizon. My colleagues inspire and encourage me by their willingness to go the extra mile for the benefit of the team. My students keep everything fresh and inspire me to keep aiming for a work life balance that allows me to thrive.

GET IT I GET THINKING

I like to move it, move it! — by Krysten Davis —

I

f my daughter doesn’t eat regularly, she gets extremely hangry. She’s been like this since she was a baby. We all know the signs to look out for: irritability, cranky comments and general inability to cope with any form of challenge. But if you add one sushi roll she is an angel.

I’m like this with exercise. If I can’t get to the gym or play sport or go for a walk, I just start to get sad and cranky. People around me know to tell me to just ‘go for a walk’. (This is not the same thing as telling me to ‘take a hike’ or go for a ‘long walk off a short plank’). My mood and general likability are always massively improved by a nice little exercise induced endorphin hit. Research on people suffering from depression shows that exercise is MUCH MORE effective than ANY medication currently available to improve symptoms of depression and overall well- being. There is really no downside to being physically active. So…… why are so many people sedentary and spending more time snoozing than with their sneakers on? I think some people are scared that exercise needs to involve lycra and electrolytes. Or you need to be able to preen seductively in the gym mirror, examining your inflated lips (and/or arse). Or that you have to run a marathon before there is any benefit. So. Not. True. If you currently do nothing, doing ANYTHING will come with benefits. Start by just going for one walk. I 100% guarantee that you will be in a better mood at the end of the walk than at the start. Exercise is a life hack. Also…….. the more calories you burn exercising…….the more wine you can drink.

GET IT I LIFESTYLE

Stepping into the maledominated earthmoving industry at 21, Roxy Donaghey sits down with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter to talk about carving her own path amongst the “boys’ club”, embracing opportunity and doing her career her way.

she believes there is still a long way to go in workplace transformation to truly welcome and support women.

Job change can be a daunting prospect for anyone, but Roxy Donaghey took her career transition to the next level. It was during her time working as a medical receptionist that Roxy was first exposed to the very different world of truck driving that her intrigue for a new career began.

“They need to have job advertisements that actually attract women to the industry and also publicise case studies of successful women in these industries as there are so many inspirational stories to be told.”

“I met a girl who was driving trucks in Mackay hauling sugar cane. I was immediately fascinated by her job,” Roxy tells me. “I enrolled in a few truck driving lessons and passed my licence the first time! It cost me $3000, but upon reflection, it was the best money I ever spent.” Bored with office work, Roxy quickly realised this was an industry that offered her something special, but even she couldn’t have anticipated that she’d still be here several years on in her role at Axle’s Earthmoving. “I absolutely love the variety of working for Axle’s - everyday is different! What makes this company different from others is that they take on a job from start to finish, which is a great experience, and you get to see the end results. I mostly drive the trucks and sometimes some of the machines, although truck driving is really my specialty. The truck is my office and I love it!” With many years now under her belt, Roxy feels strongly about the stereotypes that exist within these industries, and the barriers to entry that stop more women from trying their hand at this type of career. “There’s a definite perception that it’s a ‘man’s job’, and you add to this some unfavourable environments that sometimes make it more difficult for women to excel. “There is often a lack of mentoring and career development opportunities for women in the industry,” Roxy explains. “In one of my first jobs, some of the older males were not so accepting of me as - they didn’t believe I belonged in the industry and would often make derogatory comments. However, once they saw the quality of my work, they started to change their tune.” Although Roxy has stood her ground and made a name for herself in this industry,

15

“Outside of engagement through career expos and open days, there is not much done to directly target young women for these roles,” she says. “I think companies are recognising the need to develop a strategy to increase the number of women in ‘non-traditional’ roles,” Roxy adds.

Roxy credits an inner strength and confidence to being able to navigate the trickier times, although it didn’t always come easy. “In one of my first jobs, my boss was alongside me while working on top of a mountain. I was a little scared and he said to me, ‘You cannot have any fear in this job as that is when you will make mistakes’. “I think of this moment each time I am in a situation outside my comfort zone. There is no room for fear in this industry.” Letting go of fear for Roxy also means bringing her whole self to the workplace, without the need to adjust her personality within a male-dominated industry. “I think there is room to maintain your own sense of individuality as there are a variety of unique skills that women can bring to the industry - as they say ‘diversity drives innovation. “I also believe women are important in these industries as mentors, leaders and advocates for future girls.” Roxy truly loves the work she does and is looking forward to reaching her 10-year milestone with Axle’s Earthmoving, living each day to its fullest. While she tells me that her mum was initially “terrified” of her career leap, her family is very proud and supportive, and her father is her biggest fan. “He is always showing anyone that asks for videos or images of me working,” Roxy reflects. “When I lived in North Queensland when I was first starting out, sometimes my Dad and I would be working on the same site, but for different companies – it was a good feeling, father and daughter working together in such an industry. Made me feel proud.” Before our time together wraps up, I ask Roxy for one piece of advice that’s guided her over the last 10 years. “Embrace every opportunity with zero fear and give everything a go!”

Pilates & Running – A PERFECT MATCH In search of a great fitness combination? Pilates and running go hand in hand to act as a great balance of cardiovascular fitness and low impact strength and conditioning. Victoria Nicholas, Pilates & Co Instructor and our customer experience manager, has used the combination of Pilates and running for many years and believes it’s the perfect model for those wanting to work on their overall fitness and weight loss management. We often get asked if Pilates is good for weight loss. Weight loss is generally related to a combination of diet and exercise. With exercise it is important to keep things balanced and it’s beneficial if you can add a variety of exercise modalities. These can include strength training, Pilates, HIIT training, running, walking, swimming or cardio to your weekly routine. As we know too well, fitting all that into a weekly routine is a tough ask. So, if you can only pick two, then combining Pilates and running is a great option.

GET IT April 2022

Bringing some running in to compliment your Pilates regime could assist in delivering greater results when it comes to weight loss and management, as well as mood elevation and general fitness. Depending on how often you can add running to your Pilates will determine the cardiovascular and weight benefits for you. This volume can shift up and down depending on your goals and time available to train. Make it about You! Running is not for everyone, so it is important to choose a style of running that is enjoyable for you. Running is also a great opportunity to clear the mind, increase energy levels, promote circulation and improve sleep. Build into it and gradulally increase the running time or distances you choose. If new to running, give yourself time to recover. For example start with one run a week, then add more volume with each run and if you’re adding another day just ensure these are a couple of days apart.

16

If you would like to add Pilates to your running regime, try a class with Pilates & Co. We have a number of options available from group classes to small groups (max three people) and private sessions. Take a look at their intro offers pilatesandco.com.au/ online-offers

Bringing his signature multidisciplinary installation style to the 2022 Lorne Sculpture Biennale, Currumbin local Clayton Blake shares his artistic vision for this year’s piece and what goes on behind the scenes in his studio. 1.

Tell us about your current exhibition at Lorne Surf Life Saving Club for the Biennale.

3. How did you get into your field of work, and how has your style evolved over time?

It’s an abstract interpretation of the Bathing Boxes that once adorned the Lorne Foreshore. I’ve created a large-scale dramatic piece which reacts and responds to sunlight. Depending on the time of day the colourful shadows cast will create an exciting, interactive and participatory experience for those attending the event. The use of concrete, abstract forms and geometric shapes is in part a celebration of post-war Brutalist Architecture.

I began sculpting as a creative outlet and in an attempt to make a difference. I initially began by adapting everyday objects and materials to specific artistic and architectural applications. I used a diverse range of materials to create large scale, contemporary installations that challenge and excite. I have since refined my artistic practice and currently focus on developing large-scale contemporary Brutalist projects as well as thermoformed acrylic works.

2. You’re based in Currumbin - how does your location influence the work you do, and what do you love about the GC?

Every project involves mistakes and learning. One needs to master all aspects of creating large scale public art including but not limited to engineering, quantity surveying, design, CAD, logistics, budgets, welding, rendering and more.

There’s a strong, supportive and inspiring creative community on the GC. The Swell Sculpture Exhibition provided a wonderful introduction to Currumbin (and the GC) which prompted my relocation from Victoria some 6 years ago.

4. How do you stay inspired as an artist? I tend to think sculpturally and draw inspiration from most situations. I’m excited by shapes, forms, materiality and narrative. I attempt to expand the definition of art to include new forms of social engagement using art to promote discussion, encourage debate, and raise awareness about injustice, inequality and social change. 5. What’s next for you in your work and creation? I’m currently working on an exciting commission in Macau, Hong Kong. I’ve been commissioned to create 23 individual artworks. One for each level of a 23 story hotel. I’m also working on a monumental project for Burning Man in Nevada USA as well as a permanent piece for PITCH (Vic) which I’m particularly proud of.

There are inherent risks in what we do, and 4 weeks ago I cut off my finger using the bench saw in my studio!

WHY A SKIN CANCER CHECK COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE Did you know that more Australians died from melanoma than road accidents in 2021?

A new report estimates that without critical action, by 2030 a further 205,000 Australians will be diagnosed with melanoma and 18,000 will die from the disease within five years of diagnosis. “When it comes to a disease as deadly as melanoma, early detection through regular full-body skin cancer checks is the best defence,” says Skin Cancer Doctor Matthew Power at Gold Coast Skin Centre in Palm Beach. Early detection and treatment are vital in south-east Queensland, where melanoma diagnoses reach up to 50 per cent above the national average. However, 99 per cent of skin cancers are curable if detected and treated early. Experts recommend an annual skin check with a Skin Cancer Doctor, through whom patients can access dedicated skin cancer care without a GP referral. “Our mission is to detect skin cancers in the early stages to minimise complex, invasive, and expensive treatments, and ultimately save lives.” Contact Gold Coast Skin Centre on 5520 1000 or visit skincancercentres.com.au/goldcoast.

Aladdin’s Cave

in Hope Island 1. So Ang, tell us, how did your story begin? The shop at Hope Island Central was created from a brainstorming session over a wine or two between likeminded friends. Throwing around ideas that were jotted down on butcher’s paper. The notion of opening a shop became the reason that made me excited to get up every morning and work towards this goal.

2. How did you first start out in your industry? My background is extremely vast, from working at a veterinary to selling high-end furniture to owning restaurants, just to name a few. I am also a Certified Marriage Celebrant. Opening my own store has been a learning curve to say the least but my extensive career knowledge has assisted me at every angle.

4. How do you stay motivated and who inspires you?

Angela Whittle. Owner of Diamond in the Roughies

I find motivation in affirmations and by surrounding myself with positive people. My passion was to have a one stop shop that could cater to everyone; an “Aladdin’s Cave,” which is how “Diamond in the Roughies” came about.

5. Do you have a favourite quote you live and work by? If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re too small - Richard Branson

6. What are your favourite GC/Hope Island spots to recharge and reconnect with friends?

3. Tell us something that might surprise us about your business?

On a boat at Bums Bay, local backyard BBQ or Three Sixty at Grand Hotel.

Before opening my store, I started asking what made Hope Islanders tick. The commonality was boating, fishing, classic cars, fashion, décor, and pets, in particular dogs. My goal became to support local producers and businesses. For example, beautifully created handmade products like candles, earrings, vintage jewellery, gift cards and grazing tables. There is something for everyone.

7. What do you love most about what you do? Meeting new and interesting people and tapping into customers wants. I do dream that everyone feels enlightened when they enter my shop and give positive feedback and suggestions along the way. Shop 8a Hope Island Central, 340 Hope Island Road, Hope Island

6 simple ways to stay

healthy

and feel good in the process There’s a huge amount of health information available online, but sometimes this can be overwhelming. In reality though, most health advice boils down to six basic principles.

Positivity As many leaders throughout time have advised, what we think is what we become. We have over 60,000 thoughts per day, so it’s important to keep these as positive as possible. Decide which thoughts to give attention to. They become your beliefs and define how much you enjoy your life. Try adding meditation to your daily routine to help reset your mind for mental clarity and keep your thoughts on track.

Breathe Breathing deeply into your diaphragm is an effective way to manage stress because it simulates the same breathing patterns we experience when we are happy and relaxed. Slowing your breath will also slow your heart

rate and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing your body to ‘rest and digest’.

Hydrate Our bodies are over 70 per cent water, but do you know why we need to drink? Hydration keeps our organs functioning, regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, delivers nutrients to cells and prevents infections. If you’re well-hydrated, you’ll sleep better and have clearer mind too. Two litres a day is the recommended amount of water we should drink for optimum health.

Move Keeping the brain and body active is essential for good health, helps maintain a healthy weight and reduces the risk of disease. At Sharks Health & Fitness, our personal trainers recommend strength training three times a week and cardio exercise three times a week to help your body function in the best way possible.

Nutrition Listen to your body. How do you feel after each meal? Many people will find that sugar, gluten, dairy, grains and alcohol are triggers for allergies, discomfort and feeling unwell. Good nutrition will reduce your risks of dietrelated chronic disease so fill up on fresh vegetables, fruit, protein and healthy fats and remember to keep portion size under control.

Sleep We all need seven to nine hours of sleep each night to allow our bodies and minds to recharge and function properly. To ensure you get a good night’s sleep, stop stimulants such as sugar and caffeine at lunch time, don’t use your phone or device at night, keep regular sleep/wake times, blacken out your room and meditate to unwind at the end of the day. So, there you go. If you don’t have time to scour the internet for health advice, sticking to these six simple rules will keep your health on track.

Disclaimer: Health advice is general in nature and should be read as such. For any health concerns, please see your doctor.

Dealing with setbacks and

Roadblocks

The road to living a healthy lifestyle is filled with speedbumps, wrong turns and difficult-to-navigate paths. Although we wish the journey was straight forward and simple, the reality is that it in fact isn’t. Jordan, the best Basketball player of his generation was famous for trying new skills and failing, using this failure as a lesson to push him one step closer to skill mastery.

The sooner we come to terms with this, the better off we will be and more prepared we will be to tackle to obstacles along the way. Here are three simple strategies and tips to help you gain success. 1.

Mistakes and errors are bound to happen. Every mistake you make and learn from will bring you closer to success. The common mindset is that when you miss a workout or eat a bad meal, the whole plan is out the window and you may as well not even try. When we refer to the stages of change, relapse is actually part of the process, so if we understand this and look at it objectively, we can use this relapse as an opportunity to learn. Michael

2.

Don’t worry about looking good, worry about achieving the result. As a population, often we are hesitant to try something out of our comfort zone or put ourselves out there in case we fail and are looked down upon by our peers. Remove the fear of everyone else and instead focus on the fact that if you do take a chance to succeed, you may fail but you also may achieve exactly what you want to! Taking a chance to grow and evolve will always top not trying at all.

25

3.

Pain + Reflection = Progress. The pain of failure can do many things to us. It can force us to reflect on the actions we took to cause the failure in the first place and re-assess to see if things can be done better. This reflection will then therefore make progress towards your goals as you will look to find a better way to succeed. Use the pain of failure to empower you, not tie you down!

The Secrets to a Seriously

Good Slumber

Are you chasing those elusive eight hours of sleep a night? Sleep psychologist Professor Dorothy Bruck shares with us the habits of healthy sleepers, and discusses how we can all catch some better quality zzzs this year. 1. How important is sleep to our overall health? We argue that sleep is one of the three pillars of good health, alongside good nutrition and exercise.

Sleep is essential for us to get through the day, helping us to concentrate, remember things, enhance our mood and be productive. Good sleep is also important for ongoing health, particularly when we talk about preventing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and depression (and of course, beauty sleep!).

2. How common is a bad night’s sleep for Australian women? Unfortunately, for many women, a poor night’s sleep is quite common. A recent survey of over 1000 Australian adults conducted by Melotin MR and the Sleep Health Foundation found that half (49 per cent) of Australians say the quality of their sleep is being significantly affected by one or more of these conditions: chronic pain (17 per cent), depression (16 per cent), Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) during sleep (10 per GET IT April 2022

cent) and chronic anxiety (10 per cent).

The same recent survey found that women are more likely than men to say they have difficulty falling asleep at least once a week or more each week (56 per cent compared to 43 per cent) and difficulty falling asleep everyday (13 per cent compared to 8 per cent).

TIPS FOR A HIGH QUALITY SLEEP •

Keep a routine, including not sleeping in for more than an hour on weekends.

Be active and spend time outdoors.

Spend the amount of time in bed that equals your sleep needs. If you think you need 7.5 hours of sleep to feel good, plan your bedtime accordingly.

Avoid naps long enough to interfere with your night time sleep.

3. What can we do about insomnia, even short term? First, realise that waking up during the night is actually completely normal. Try to create the right conditions in your body and mind to allow sleep, or at least doziness, to come. So, banish worries and instead focus on pleasant neutral thoughts.

32

If you are lying in bed and feeling more agitated as the time ticks on, then it is time for a circuit-breaker. Get up, keep the lights at a low level, have a warm non-caffeine drink and do something relaxing until you feel calmer. You can’t force sleep!

4. What are some of the biggest things to avoid if we want good sleep? Be mindful of when you drink your coffee, particularly as the day progresses as this can impact your sleep. We also recommend avoiding or minimising blue light (from computers or phones), late night working, upsetting TV shows, computer games, vigorous exercise and large food intake. Make sure to use the last hour of your day to prepare for sleep.

5. How much is the right amount of sleep? A panel of international experts agree that the right amount of sleep for an adult is normally within the 7 to 9 hour band, however this can still vary amongst individuals. Essentially, you should know that if you are waking up feeling alert after breakfast and also after lunch, it is good to assume that you had enough sleep the night before. It is certainly possible to spend too much time in bed and this is to be avoided - it can result in a habit of fragmented sleep across the night, most likely with long wake periods when you would rather be asleep.
