Why This Magical Time of Year Can Boost your Mental Health It can be elusive, or for some, it might even be part of your DNA – we’re talking about Christmas spirit. As we face the run up to the 25th we’re asking: can embracing ‘Christmas spirit’ actually be good for our mental health? We chatted to Medical on Miami Psychologist Anthony Engel, to discover the facts behind the sentiment, and what we can learn from sprinkling a little more magic in our lives. Is there any science behind Christmas spirit making us feel better? The joy of Christmas may alter some of the brain chemicals (dopamine and serotonin) that determine your happiness levels. Dopamine has been linked to reward-driven behaviour and pleasure seeking,whereas serotonin is believed to boost our sense of worth and belonging. Our parietal lobes and other related areas of the brain have been linked to selftranscendence, which is an important aspect of spirituality. Additionally, the premotor cortex becomes more active in persons who were excited about Christmas, and it is also active when we share an emotional experience by mimicking other people’s body motions and participating in shared festive interests.
There’s some data to show that people who put up Christmas decorations early are happier, what are your thoughts? Yes, people who put up Christmas decorations early are usually happier. These people are more likely to be in touch with their inner child. Putting up decorations early in the season can also remind people of their childhood and perhaps they use this festive time as an escape from the obligations and stresses of adulthood. Flickering lights and tinsel may all create a tranquil and invigorating atmosphere, which is also reflected from within the individual. GET IT December 2023

What does Christmas spirit mean to you? Christmas can be a joyous occasion. It can be an exciting time – and, it can be a stressful time. But whether you regard Christmas as a joyous or stressful occasion, there is no doubt that Christmas, or elements of Christmas, can be beneficial to your mental health. Christmas cheer is the joy, warmth, peace, and nostalgia that people feel when they encounter something Christmas-related. I recall handing out large colourful cards depicting various images of Christmas at a group therapy session a while back, and after the participants viewed them and discussed their thoughts, I noticed an upsurge in humour, laughter, joy, and happiness among the group. Many members of the group later remarked that their mood had transformed from one of sadness to one of delight. So, for the sake of your wellbeing, embrace the Christmas spirit!

How can we make the most of Christmas spirit while not getting bogged down in the stress of the silly season? Have a plan! Not a plan in your head, but a real plan on paper. Jot down your priorities, keep this list close to you as you will need to add or remove things as you near the big days. Always think before you commit yourself to other people’s expectations. Learn to say no and practice relaxing and taking time out – not everything is a rush or urgent. Recognise your stressful situations or triggers and maintain your cool.

Why is it important for our mental health to enjoy and embrace a bit of frivolity and fun? Having fun is an important component of staying healthy. Having fun might help you avoid burnout and retain a positive mindset. It may also help you connect with people who share your interests and inspire your creativity.

To me, ‘fun’ in therapy always includes a focus on connection, spontaneity, and improvisation. People have a lot of fun when all three states work together. My discoveries of fun and frivolity nearly always included others, whether just one person or a group of people. A connection with others is the key to having fun and part of that fun includes being silly and light-hearted.

Make time for simple, festive activities like gingerbread house making from a kit, or hanging lights with Christmas tunes in the background – often these relaxed moments with loved ones bring us the most joy. It doesn’t need to be picture perfect: embrace decorations that bring you joy, even if it’s not “on trend.” Pay it forward – make or buy some affordable festive treats and deliver them to your neighbours, a personal surprise that will mean a lot. Australian Christmases are all about summer foods and creative cuisine. These delicious recipes by Chefs Simon Furley, Kylie McNamara and Alex Hall from Embers Wood Fire Dining will have you feeling fancy, full and festive.
Festivefeasting Charred Ingredients: Tomato & Watermelon Salad
Method:
• 200g firm tofu Dressing: • 12 small, sweet, cherry tomatoes • 100ml of extra-virgin olive oil • 1 tsp brown sugar • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar Whipped Feta: • 100g good quality feta soft • Pinch of salt • Pinch of pepper • Zest and juice of one lime

1. For the tomatoes, you can either barbecue them until scorched and black on the outside or in a hot pan blackened. 2. Then placed the tomatoes into a blender. 3. Add all other ingredients and pulse into a rough dressing consistency. 4. For the feta place all ingredients into a Kitchen aid or whisking device, whisk until slightly light and fluffy. 5. Use Fresh local watermelon, slice into quarters, then thinly sliced in the middle. 6. And slice under the bottom, so the sections release easily. 7. To serve, place the watermelon slices a plate and drop the whipped feta next to it. Drizzle over tomato dressing.

Fennel & Sheep Ingredients: • 140g sliced local sheep loin • 3 fennel bulbs with tops attached • 3 egg yolks • 100g good quality olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste • English mustard good quality
Method: 1. Cut of the tops and the bottom of the fennel slice fennel into six pieces. 2. Then in a cold pan place the lamb fat side down on low heat, slowly render out the fat for about 5 to 8 minutes. 3. Remove the lamb from the pan place fennel in the pan. 4. Cook in the oil for about 10 to 12 minutes on a low heat until tender. 5. Take the put out and place somewhere warm. 6. Mix the lamb fat and olive oil together. 7. In a separate bowl whisk together the egg yolks, Malt vinegar, mustard, and a pinch salt. 8. Then slowly start whisking in the lamb fat and olive oil mixture into a thick Glossy mayonnaise comes together, season with salt and pepper to taste. 9. Now get that same pan very hot, so it’s like smoking then add the lamb this time on its side, cook each side for 2 minutes until golden. Then remove from heat. 10. To plate place a nice drop of the mayonnaise the sliced medium rare lamb, the confit fennel on top and finish with fennel fronds to garnish.

BBQ Christmas, Cray Fish Ingredients:
Method:
• 10 medium-size Cray Fish around 200g each peeled and deveined • 4 local organic peaches • Fresh lime 2 • 100ml water • Raw sugar 100 g • 4 whole fingers limes • Salt and pepper to taste
1. Using a wooden skewer place 2 crayfish tails onto the skewer with fresh cut peaches in between. 2. Set aside for later. 3. Heat the raw sugar water and lime juice in a pan until combined. 4. Then cool slightly slice the finger lime in half and squeeze out the pearls and add to syrup. 5. Over a hot BBQ cook the skewers for two minutes each side plate and drizzle the sour syrup over the top. 6. Would go excellent with avocados.
Plum Pavlova Ingredients: Pavlova: • 300g egg whites • 300g castor sugar • 300g icing sugar • 1 tsp white vinegar Cooked plums: • 100g raw sugar • 100g water • Two plums Whipped creme fraiche: • ½ cup Tommerup creme fraiche • ½ thickened cream • 1 tbsp milk powder

After Dinner Mints Ingredients:
Method:
• 100 couverture quality dark chocolate • 100g local cream • 10g of organic salted butter • 1 teaspoon organic honey • One bunch, fresh garden mint
1. In a small pan, heat the cream and honey, to a simmer then pour over the chocolate using a spatula mix together, allow to cool slightly then add the butter mix completely. 2. Place into the fridge to set. 3. Once set place into a piping bag and pipe onto fresh mint leaves and place into the freezer serve after Xmas dinner from frozen sprinkle with good quality sea salt. 4. A lighter (more wake you up) sweet treat.
Method: 1. Set oven to 110C 2. Whip egg whites in mixer until fluffy. 3. Next, add caster sugar and whisk for 10 minutes. 4. Add icing sugar and whisk for a further 15 minutes 5. Add vinegar whisking for a further five minutes 6. Scoop meringue into 5cm dollops onto baking tray and bake for one hour 7. Combine sugar and water and reduce by half BBQ plums until lightly caramelised, then drop into sugar syrup and let cool 8. For the whipped fraiche place all together and lightly whisk until soft peaks form. 9. To plate go crazy – it’s Christmas however you like. 31
