IT’S ALL AVANT GARDE FOR 2022 After lockdowns and state sanctioned restrictions the only thing ladies are seeing more of than their hairdressers is split ends. With more women eager to visit the salon after a covid enforced hiatus, a new hair trend has emerged for 2022, Avant Garde style choices. With more than the usual amount of regrowth and the presence of more at home hair colouring, hairdressers are stepping outside the box of our client’s usual style choices and embarking on new and exciting hair journeys. For the ladies that didn’t colour their hair at home, the result has been lots of grey regrowth. With all this natural silver hair coming through the decision to foil out the remaining hair to silvery grey tones has increased. Many women cite Meryl Steep’s Miranda Priestly character as a style reference. From hiding greys to magnifying them the results are glamorous and out of the norm for many. For those that coloured their hair at home and failed, the urgency in patching things up has never been greater! For this reason, many women are embracing darker shades. Everyone is cautious with their spending now, so instead of a costly lightening service, we are experiencing a surge in women nurturing darker colours brought about by their DIY decisions. With help and advice from their hairdressers our clients are discovering a love for their darker than normal hair. 2022 is about new and experimental ideas.

GET IT I GET THINKING
A day we love — by Krysten Davis —
Locally designed swimwear Valentines Day….. it’s a minefield. I’m going to make it really, really simple for all the men out there. If your significant other says that they ‘don’t want anything’ for Valentine’s Day. They. Are. Lying. Not once in the history of the universe has a women looked at someone else’s work delivery of longstemmed roses, sighed and thought- ‘Look at that poor slave to the patriarchy.’ If you’re the sort of guy that pleads rugged individualism and explains that you are not going to be told what to do by a societal construct. Fine… but I know that you are also unable to commit to a sweeping romantic gesture on any other day of the year. So just buy the bloody flowers/chocolates/ lingerie on February 14th and make everyone happy. I can 100% assure you that no woman has EVER been disappointed/angry/upset that you remembered to make an effort. I have been told that there is the rare unicorn out there that buys flowers every week, surprises you with spontaneous romantic dinners and suggests an unprompted trip to the jewellery store, I’ve just never met one. It’s also not about the amount of money that’s gone into said gesture, it’s about the amount of EFFORT and THOUGHT involved. A beach walk where you write ‘I LOVE YOU’ in the sand is always going to trump a last ditch $20 bunch of servo flowers. Now- for those lovely ladies out there who find themselves without a juicy lover on the day of love. You need to treat yourself. Or get together with your girlfriends and have a gin inspired gathering and extoll the virtues of having no one in your life who steals the doona. We can all do with a bit more love in these days of calamity and contagion. In the wise words of my favorite drag queen and philosopher, RuPaul- ‘If you can’t love yourself how the HELL are you going to love someone else?’ xx

Concréte cements Queensland’s
TOP DESIGN AWARD
A hot new design trend has taken Queensland’s property market by storm – and it packs more than just a style statement. Architect George Kouparitsas was recently announced as best residential designer at the HIA-CSR QLD Housing Awards for Concréte: a striking home constructed in its namesake material. Here, George shares his tips for using the material-of-the-moment in your own home design.
hillside contours. The living and sleeping areas on the upper levels have floor-toceiling glass windows and doors to make it feel like you’re floating in the clouds. The lounge area also features a double-level void, wrapped in concrete. When entering via the front doors, visitors are immersed within the void, which conveys the aura of a contemporary cathedral. Your use of concrete obviously made a huge impact both in terms of street appeal but also when inside the home – is the use of concrete going to be a new trend?
Congratulations on the award George – can you tell us about the award-winning house? George: The house is called Concrete as it features a very striking and defining concrete façade, concrete feature walls and polished concrete floors. The owners love that minimalist vibe and wanted a maintenance-free house. Concrete was the ideal solution.
George: We chose concrete as it provides a stunning minimalist finish while also being a really durable, weather resilient and low maintenance material. We used tilt-up concrete panels to wrap the void of the home, which helped contain costs as they were manufactured onsite and constructed within days. Having exposed concrete panelled walls and floors is also very low maintenance, as the finish doesn’t require ongoing treatment. Concrete is also flood and fire resistant and doesn’t rot or distort – in fact, it actually gets stronger over time, making it an ideal choice for changing conditions associated with coastal living and climate change. If you’re looking to make a minimalist or industrial style statement, it’s definitely a smart design choice.
What makes the design so special? George: We split the home’s functions into three distinct purposes: the basement is to serve, the ground level is to live, and the upper level is to sleep. We moulded the house into the hillside, enabling the service level – including the cellar, cinema and garage – to be submerged and forming a podium for the living level. With its concrete façade, this makes the home look as though it’s stone rising from the GET IT February 2022
