Nicole Editor Is it February already? While time might be flying at apparent breakneck speed, the arrival of February also brings the arrival of our first issue for 2021 – and my first issue as editor! It’s crazy to think back to this time last year, and how different our world was then – little did we know that lockdowns, mandated masks, remote working, and home schooling would be par for the course for 2020. Yet, here we are, 12 months later – and we survived! And if there is one lesson most of us learnt from the events of last year, it’s that nothing is more important than LOVE. And what better time to celebrate love than February – the most loved up month on the calendar! But we’re not just celebrating romantic love – we’re recognising love in all its forms - family love, unique friendships, heck, even pet love. Of course, let’s not forget the most valuable, yet frequently neglected category – self-love (check out the five ways you can learn to love yourself more on page 18). Love comes in many shapes and sizes, and now, more than ever, it’s crucial that we embrace it in whatever way it presents itself to us. One thing I’ve learnt, is that not everything goes to plan when it comes to love. Real love isn’t always storybook perfect. And this year, I am ALL about love. I’m getting married! But it’s not just my partner’s love I’ll be celebrating. I’ll also be honouring the love of the two boys that came along with him – my two bonus children. And he’ll be celebrating the love of the three children that make up my package deal, as we become – officially – a family of seven. We’ll also be celebrating our parents, our siblings, our extended family, and our friends. As well as the enduring love for those we’ve lost along the way. There is no right way to experience love, it’s the experience itself that matters. So, remember, if the love in your life doesn’t fit the storybook definition, that doesn’t mean it can’t be a fairy tale. After all, you are the author.

With a profession that sees him capture the most spectacular Australian landscapes, photographer Sean Scott talks to Get It Magazine about iconic destinations, staying present and his love for all things Gold Coast.

What sparked your career in photography? I got started in photography while I was working full time as an electrician and linesman. People started taking a lot of interest in my work so I began selling my prints at local markets - everything just grew from there. Three years after starting my market stall, I left my full time job to follow my passion and have not looked back since. I have had my gallery in Burleigh Heads for 17 years and I’m fortunate to be an ambassador for Tourism Australia, which means to get to spend a lot of the year touring around Australia capturing images. As Australia begins to open up again, we are all looking to take in more of our own beautiful backyard - what’s next on your destination list? Western Australia is next on my destination list, I’ve built a custom outback photography 4WD that allows me to live and work in very remote locations all over Australia. This 4WD has been my home over the past eight weeks as I’ve been on the road travelling Queensland. I’ve been everywhere from the gulf to the outback and right across to the Great Barrier Reef.

Where are your top three ‘must see’ Australian locations? 1. Cape Le Grand National Park in WA. The water clarity, wildlife and colour over there are like nothing you’ve seen before.

What do you appreciate most about the Gold Coast?

I love hitting the road and touring around Australia and the world, but I also love to come home. The waves and beaches are as good as any place on Earth. The crystal clear water and the rainforest in the hinterland offer limitless photographic opportunities and my local community of Burleigh Heads is a great place to call home. What is a key life lesson that your career has taught you? Stop and look around. It’s amazing how often I’m shooting an incredible scene and notice other visitors walking along but not taking the time to actually see where they are. I’ve found that beautiful moments are around us all the time, so if you stop and appreciate what we have, then you will be much richer for it.

Time for a Brake! — by krysten davis —

I

eat too fast. Often, I’m halfway through the meal before I’ve really savored or tasted anything.

I also read too fast. I inhale a book in a day, and then move on to the next one. My speed of reading also makes me a really lousy proofreader (any typos are entirely my fault!) I definitely consume alcohol too fast - contemplating my next drink before finishing the first (not a great anti-hangover strategy). My life is lived at what feels like break-neck speed. I’m always able to add ‘one more thing’ to my to-do list, and I struggle to say ‘no’. Between work, family, and friends, I often feel like I’m completely ‘snowed’, and this leaves me short-fused and weary. I feel like my word for 2020 (actually, probably the last 20 years!) was ‘busy’. My aim for 2021 is to change my word from ‘busy’ to ‘slow’. Not ‘slow’ as in a sandwich short of a picnic! But just to try and take my time - reading, eating, drinking, living. I know it’s a bit of a cliché - but I really want to try and be ‘in the moment’. I want to force myself to take the time to experience what is right in front of me and not be thinking/planning about what comes next.

I want to listen to someone speaking and not be thinking about what I need to buy for dinner, or the phone call I need to make. I am going to actively limit my ‘screen time’, (I’m always a little bit terrified/guilty when my phone tells me the average hours a day I’ve spent looking at other people’s photos or satirical trump videos!).

5. What’s next on the horizon for you? Our youngest child Jesse starts school in 2021! For the first time ever we’ll have all three children on the same morning schedule. For the business, we are looking to expand into new locations.

6. What’s a favourite date-night activity on the Gold Coast? Definitely dinner and drinks - we have so many beautiful restaurants and such a vibrant dining community on the Gold Coast, and we love Fig and Frankies for a low-key date night.

We met 20 years ago through mutual friends - I’m super analytical and very numbersdriven. Christo is the total opposite – he’s very creative and full of ideas! He’s always ready to say yes, and I’m the one who does all the due diligence to make sure the numbers really do stack up.

It’s just all encompassing. Buying this business in the middle of COVID, adapting to all the restrictions while we both work full time with three kids. We never switch off, there’s always something we need to fix or discuss, or an idea we’ve had!

Creating a

summer retreat

How to give your home that magical holiday feeling all year round For many Australians, summer trips abroad look to be set in the distant future. Staycations are the new trend, and making the most of our homes has never been more important. According to Interior Designer, Simone Matthews, creating an oasis within your home can be achieved by focusing on the aesthetics of your interiors, pulling together a cohesive look that champions light, and the ease of moving through spaces. “I am a big believer that the key to achieving that holiday style is to mix it up, that’s how you create your own unique look and feel,” says Matthews. In her latest project, The PAUSE, Matthews focused on combining key styles. “We are simplifying the way we live, and a key factor of that is integrating nature into our lives and appreciating how nature makes us feel,” she says. “To create an atmosphere that feels like a calm oasis from the outside world, we used a ‘less is more’ approach with colours and materials. Using a base palette of coastal white against natural timbers and brass, the key is to mix the materials, natural fabrics and textures in similar colour palettes to create the final look.

Cold-Press Juices Cold-press juices are loaded with enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Juicing is also a great way to get all your serves of veggies in one glass. Adding cold-press vegetable juices to your routine will propel your health to another level. I recommend drinking on an empty stomach for maximum absorption and to drink as soon as possible after it has been made.

Ingredients

2 celery stalks 1 whole cucumber 2 cups greens (spinach, bok choy, kale) 1 handful parsley

This was our famous green juice at the cafe. I use fennel fronds in this which would otherwise have been thrown away. The fennel increases the vitamin C content and gives the juice a hint of sweetness. It’s also a wonderful digestive aid. Dark leafy greens contain loads of chlorophyll and are a powerful rejuvenating boost for your body. Prep:

1 green apple (optional, for added sweetness) ½ lemon 1 cm (¼ in) piece of ginger

Method Wash all ingredients well and chop to the right size for your juicer. Add to juicer, alternating between softer and harder ingredients, adding the greens and herbs then the cucumber, celery and lemon. Stir well and enjoy.

Give Me Transformation

Ingredients 2 beetroots, whole 1 cucumber, whole 2 celery stalks 1 handful dandelion greens ½ lemon

This juice is a great liver tonic with beetroot and dandelion both known for keeping your liver healthy. Beetroots are rich in the phytonutrient betanin, which supports detoxification and is rich in antioxidants. Prep:

Method Wash all ingredients well and chop to the right size for your juicer. Alternate between adding the beetroot and the celery then the cucumber and dandelion. Stir well and enjoy.

GET IT I LIFESTYLE 1. Manage expectations: First thing’s first, have an open discussion around expectations relating to Valentine’s Day so you’re both on the same page. People have different ideals and with that comes fundamental differences, so put your cards on the table and communicate clearly. A wonderful tool to use is simply state how you feel and what you need. So, if Valentine’s Day is important to you, say so, if it’s not, again voice that. That way both people have their needs met.

2. Find out each other’s attachment styles: Similar to knowing one another’s love languages, it’s beneficial to know your partner’s attachment style. Stan Tatkin puts it simply in naming the various attachment styles as generally being an anchor (secure), a wave (anxious), or an island (avoidant). Once you’ve talked to each other about the style you identify with most, challenges ahead can be minimised.

Romance doesn’t need to be extravagant or expensive, it can be thoughtful and understated, showing the other person how much they impact our lives and how important they are to us. emotional wellbeing and the effects of being obese affect generations. For your own sake and that of your children and their children, you MUST step up and lead by example! How does leading by example look? We all have many things going on in our lives. Work, relationships, stress, commitments, and often your health and that of your family take a back seat. Until you make it a priority in your life, change will be hard to come by and at best, temporary. If you have been making poor food choices for you and your family, turning it around is definitely harder, but it is possible. For starters, you need to lead by example for a few months! Don’t expect to force change on kids straight away; they will resist. So, the first step is for you to change; they will get curious and start to ask questions. Then you can educate them on why you are doing what you are doing and eventually they will begin to make better decisions. So, what leads to good outcomes? Let’s have a look at habits. 28

Food planning and preparation. Every weekend, take some time to plan out what you are going to include in each meal for the week. Plan to get a good serve of protein in each meal, cut down on low nutrient carbs, and make dinner a colourful salad or veggies with a big serve of protein each night. Make exercise a daily habit. Even just taking a walk of an evening with the whole family rather than watching TV will have a significant impact. Maybe it doesn’t burn a ton of calories, but it sends the message the exercise matters. Every weekend, find something to do that forces you to get active. The kids might complain at first, but they will go on to value the time together.

Gold Coasters teamed up with Brisbanites last month to onboard seven buses, en route to the Southern Downs region for a day of Christmas shopping, at last month’s Merry Muster. Event founder, Kristin Bonner, shares her story with Get it Editor, Nicole Madigan. The aim of the event was simple, bring the city dollar to regional Queensland, following the catastrophic impact of years of natural disasters, including drought, bushfires and most recently, COVID-19. The 250 Merry Muster attendees spent the day spreading festive cheer to retailers and stallholders in the towns of Warwick and Stanthorpe at the inaugural Merry Muster. The event is premised on the notion of city folk taking their dollars, which would otherwise be spent in the big smoke, and instead, supporting bush businesses doing it tough. Merry Muster founder Kristin Bonner said the idea came from a personal desire to do

something tangible for those most affected by major events such as COVID-19, drought, bushfires and floods. “Coming from the country, I felt helpless at how cruel the drought especially has been, and the toll it continues to take on regional communities,” she says. “Simply crying at images on the TV was not going to help, so I came up with a simple idea - why don’t we take our Christmas shopping dollars and spend them out in an area that desperately needs some love, instead of here in the city? And so, The Merry Muster was born.” The next step was to arrange purpose-built markets in both towns, providing locals with a dedicated platform to sell their wares, along with main street shops. Guests were encouraged to bring both baskets and eskies to load up on meat, fresh produce, cheese, wine, homemade crafts, clothing and jewellery ahead of Christmas. They returned to the city having spent an average of $350 each, injecting more than $114,000 into the region during the one-day trip.

The Muster group also distributed over 35 cubic square metres of donated goods, and $7000 in cash donations to local charities in each area. One such charity was Kangaroo Kapers Wildlife, which plays a vital role in treating, rehabilitating and releasing sick and injured wildlife. “The last 12 months have been very challenging, with the number of animals coming into care increasing significantly,” says Director Kylie Hibberd. “We are so thankful to the Merry Muster for their donation of 560 items.” Merry guests also enjoyed a gourmet lunch at Ballandean Estate, before heading home with overflowing baskets, new friends and smiling faces. Those who missed the bus but still want to show their support can do so by donating directly to the Granite Belt Water Relief Fund, Share the Dignity or simply shopping in the area.

It is essential to not just be moving away from something, but to also be certain about what you are moving towards instead. The moment someone loses sight of this, overcoming insecurity becomes way too hard.
