LETTER FROM
Nicole Editor
This month I’ve postponed a much-needed cortisone injection five times, reluctantly declined half a dozen coffee dates, and missed about 100 calls from friends and family. I haven’t picked up a book since April. Each time, I promise myself I’ll do the thing later today, tomorrow, in a couple of days, next week. At the moment, life feels like one big to-do list. And when I lament this fact to my friends and family, it seems like everyone is in the same boat. Meaning there’s a lot of life going on, but not a lot of lifestyle. It’s so easy to get caught up in the drudges of daily life, telling yourself you’re too busy to make time for the things that really matter. Once I’ve got this done, I’ll give my friend a call. When I’m finished this, I’ll make that doctor appointment. Next week, I’ll see my family.
Are you a Gold Coast business owner? Would you like to reach Gold Coast women?
The problem is, there will always be something else to get done first. And that means life will sneak away from you. I mean, it’s already July! I read a quote somewhere once that said, and I paraphrase: ‘you should meditate for 20 minutes every day, and if you’re too busy, you should meditate for an hour’. While the thought of meditating for an hour each day sends me into a mild panic (I don’t have a spare hour!), it’s easy to understand the sentiment behind the statement.
If the answer is yes to either of these questions, and if you would like to hear more about what the team at Get it Media can do to increase traffic to your business, please drop me an email or give me a call.
Being ‘too busy’ is a never-ending state-of-being, so if you don’t make time for those important things you keep putting off ‘until next week’, you may find next week never comes. So, grab a coffee, a cup of tea, or a glass of bubbly, and let us get you started with our July Lifestyle issue!
As the only monthly publication on the Gold Coast with distribution and marketing opportunities targeted to our female demographic, we’d love to help.
Enjoy...

No One Fights Alone Jodie Hollis first felt sick in January 2013. In May, she had surgery for thyroid cancer. By October, she found out she was allergic to mainstream medication. That meant the medication she did find, wasn’t covered by the PBS. Jodie started looking for support - a community or group that could support her and help with her finances which were severely affected by her illness. There were plenty of support groups for breast cancer and prostate cancer patients, but nothing just for thyroid, or even cancer in general. And those weren’t remotely close to her area. The only support available was online. The other issue was that there was no long-term financial assistance available. Centrelink only deemed Jodie unable to work for six weeks and the Cancer Council could only offer a one-off payment of $300. So, she returned to work just five weeks after the surgery. For the next three years Jodie continued to look for support groups and financial assistance but she couldn’t find anything substantial. So, she made a plan to take matters into her own hands. She sold her business in late 2016 and started volunteering for the Cancer Council GET IT July 2022

being requested by patients today. Last year they distributed almost 1000 packs, with requests for over 2000 already so far this year.
Late 2019 was Cancer Support Angels intended launch date. It was bad timing though with the majority of the country fighting the bushfires until end of January, and the Eastern side of Australia flooded in February.
To find out more about Cancer Support Angels, or to donate to support this fantastic cause, go to cancersupportangels.org.au
She finally launched in March 2020. Again, bad timing! Jodie broke her ankle and had to have surgery just one day later, and then Victoria went into COVID lockdown. Jodie withdrew from her super to cover costs for Cancer Support Angels and works part time as well. She has received no government funding, only donations. To date CSA has received less than $10k in government support over two and a half years! CSA went from three volunteers in March 2020, to 45 volunteers by September. Today, the charity has over 60 volunteers, but still needs more, as well as more donations or funding. Angel packs are full of essential items for patients and some small indulgent items. CSA went live in July 2020 and within 12 days Cancer Support Angels had over 2000 requests for packs. Angel packs are still

GET IT I GET THINKING
BE A
Cardonnay — by Krysten Davis —
GET IT VIP Join our mailing list for exclusive access to Get it giveaways, discounts and offers.
M
y lifestyle is more ‘Cardonnay’ (think Kath and Kim) than Kombucha.
I get a little impatient when I’m told about the latest trend that I absolutely must try! My 10 year old niece is absolutely mad for ‘bubble tea’ or ‘boba’ as she calls it. It’s basically sugar water with floaters. I haven’t liked drinks with floaters since the days of sharing water bottles with toddlers.
WHAT YOU’LL GET:
I think the concept of ‘lifestyle’ should be ‘the style in which you want to live your life’ not fermented cabbage and anal bleaching (don’t ever combine those two).
• A link to our latest online magazine and special digitalonly features • Immediate and exclusive entry into all our competitions • Be the first to know about special offers and discounts.
So, my ‘lifestyle’ is pretty heavy on the gym component (also the ‘gin’ component). I really like exercise, I love my pets, I love being in nature and I absolutely adore my family. I also quite like the Gold Coast. When we first floated the idea of moving here I was absolutely dead against it. I thought the Gold Coast was a mixture of augmented breasts, fake Louis, and Warwick Capper. It has all of these components, but it is also a really beautiful place and I’ve made some truly excellent friends. My kids have managed to survive adolescence in ‘sin city’ and I have yet to succumb to the lure of plastic surgery. So, when you find yourself tempted by the latest food trend (at the moment I think that it’s ‘Burrata’ that stuff is bloody everywhere!) or decide that ‘mum jeans’ are for you (we have already HAD that conversation), think about the trendy fad that you are planning on incorporating into your ‘style’ and see if it really fits. We only have one life so let’s make sure that we can all live in ‘the style to which we’ve become accustomed’.

Designing My Dream Business
Balancing her two passions - design and the environment - Texcoco Collective founder Monique Montfroy sits down with Get It Magazine to talk about the latest in leatheralternatives, staying true to your vision and aligning business with purpose. 1. Tell us about Texcoco Collective - how did you decide on the vision for the brand? It all started when I was at the end of a 3-month artist residency program in Mexico when I brought a bag from a small shop promoting artisan made products but the vendor couldn’t tell me who or where it was made - and that didn’t sit well with me. I came to realise that my purpose was to make something that was kind to our planet and the people and animals we share it with. It had to be sustainable and traceable, and it had to truly give credit to the skilled artisans and designers involved in the process with me.
2. How has the leather-alternative landscape changed in recent years? For a long time the only other alternative to animal leathers was PU leather (or pleather). This is made from plastics that contain toxic chemicals and at the end of the life-cycle are ultimately left in landfill - not ideal for the future of the earth. Texcoco Collective uses cactus leather, an incredible material innovated in Mexico by the company Desserto. Comparable to traditional leather, cactus leather is tough, durable, soft and feels and acts just like “real” leather without the nasty implications.
3. What does a typical work day look like for you? Everyday is very different, and as an online business, the unfortunate truth is a lot of my time is spent in front of the computer. As a solopreneur I am involved with every aspect of the business. I do all my own graphic design, email marketing, social media, website updating and a lot of admin. Luckily as a photographer I can direct all my own shoots and photograph my products, and this is the fun part for me.
4. How have you worked with One Tree Planted for bushfire affected areas - how important is it for you to continue your mission for positive social impact along with a viable business? Balancing profit and purpose can be at times difficult, especially for small businesses that already have a lot of costs but for me this is a nonnegotiable. I decided to support One Tree Planted because of their global reach and their philosophy to give back to the environment, create a healthier climate, protect biodiversity, and help reforestation efforts. For every handbag sold at Texcoco Collective we have pledged to plant one tree to regenerate bushfire affected areas of Australia.
5. What do you love about the GC, and do you feel shoppers here are looking for something different and more environmentally conscious? I love the Gold Coast because although we are a city it is still quite small, with that ‘everyone knows everyone’ vibe. We have a real local community spirit and because of this people love to support small businesses. People are aware of the impact their buying power has and intentionally choose to support businesses that align with their values. GET IT July 2022

Sunshine Coast Steals the Spotlight for
Over 50s Living
Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters hits all the targets with gorgeous surroundings, crazy-good activities and stylish home design. Palm Lake Resort are a big player when it comes to over 50s lifestyle communities. They have 28 addresses across the three states of Australia and 45 years’ experience in developing such communities. Now, they have broken ground on their most opulent and luxurious over 50s resort project yet. Before the build, they managed to secure a unicorn location. The resort masterplan has been designed to make the most of the Sunshine Coast’s impressive natural environment and wildlife-filled waterways. And it is on a superb golf course which has, for two years now, played host to the Isuzu Queensland Open. Pelican Waters Golf Club is also part of Palm Lake Group’s portfolio. Designed by Greg Norman, the course is undergoing reconfiguration to ensure the course retains its elite status in golfing circles. Pelican Waters Golf Club has been ranked number one public access golf course on the Sunshine Coast and Number 25 in the top 100 public access courses in Australia. The Community The 320+ architecturally designed homes proposed for this community will have water frontage and direct golf course access. And there will be world-class facilities that the Palm Lake Resort brand is known for. This includes a lakefront community centre with dedicated quarters, including the Eldorado sports club, Mirador wellness precinct,
Cerante arts and leisure precinct and Sonora dining and social precinct.
you never have to worry about parking. And how fun is it to burn around in a golf buggy!
For those more active residents, the facilities will include an eight-rink undercover lawn bowling green, tennis and pickleball precinct and golf simulator rooms along with a dedicated table tennis room. For a more social aspect, Sonora will be home to the main lounge, dining hall and bar with a roof terrace overlooking the water vistas.
Another interesting note is that there is also a dramatic upgrade of the Pelican Waters Hotel underway right now.
Palm Lake Resort’s proven fun magnet – a three-lane tenpin bowling alley – will also feature in the Eldorado, as well as an outdoor pool wrapping around the facility with a swim-up bar, private cabanas, sunken lounges and firepits.
There will be a new pro shop, training academy, as well as mini-golf, short game area and driving range all designed by Greg Norman; a first for the Greg Normandesigned team. The precinct will be a destination for the whole Sunshine Coast community. Log onto palmlakeresort.com.au/ pelicanwaters for more information, or call 1800 490 626.
Relax at the resort’s Cerante arts and leisure precinct, home to the craft room, library, music room and luxury movie theatre. To round out the community centre, Mirador will support residents’ wellness with a yoga room, Milon gymnasium, yoga and Pilates studio, a sauna, an indoor pool and more. Home Design Palm Lake Resort’s award-winning architecturally designed homes will have homeowners feeling like they are living a holiday every day. One- and two-storey home designs mix opulent details with functionality (the two-storey layouts come with lifts). The resort has been designed to integrate buggy paths throughout, allowing you to throw the car keys away as soon as you enter the resort. Each home has been designed to include a golf buggy garage, so 17

First Comes Love, Then Comes Business Turning a ‘shower thought’ into a burgeoning business, Lindsay Grace Kinniburgh and Mike Flynn are taking a stand against disposable razors with Make My Shave. Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter sits down with the power couple to share their origin story, and how to win in marriage and business. Six years ago in Bali, Lindsay and Mike crossed paths, starting the next chapter of their lives together, and setting in motion what would be a relationship full of love, adventure and a successful business launch. Looking back at that fateful evening, Mike remembers the exact moment he laid eyes on Lindsay, sharing, “I was walking past the dancefloor at a cocktail bar and found myself changing direction to go talk to a beautiful girl - within a few minutes of chatting, we realised we shared the same friends. Suddenly it was 4AM and the bar had closed around us while we were deep in conversation. That was it, I was hooked!” While the two had been working and living in Bali, the arrival of COVID turned their plan on its head, and the two decided to return to Australia for an extended holiday while things settled down. “We didn’t expect the move to be permanent, but after six months back in Australia, we GET IT July 2022
18
made the decision to pack up our Bali life,” Mike tells me. “Navigating COVID since has been a dynamic test in patience and sanity. Since 2020 we have stuck to one main rule — always stick together. This has helped us overcome border closures, complex Visa applications, my mum’s passing from cancer, finding a new home in Queensland, and starting a new business.” On the day of their intended wedding (which was postponed due to extreme flooding), Lindsay found herself having something of a “business epiphany” in the shower. “I was mid-shave when I started feeling frustrated about the wedding, guilty about using plastic razors, and annoyed that women’s shaving options are so limited — that’s when I had the ‘aha’ moment,” she explains. “I thought, ‘well, there’s nothing I can do
about my postponed wedding, but maybe I can do something about the plastic problem!’ “I came running out of the shower and pitched the idea to Mike. I asked if he would help develop a women’s shaver that’s kinder to the environment, gives a really smooth shave, and makes sustainable shaving affordable.” From then, the wheels were set in motion for ‘Make My Shave’, with the purpose of driving change and making sustainable shaving the norm. “We spent a lot of time developing our brand purpose. Because women’s empowerment and caring for the planet are close to our hearts, this is where we laid our foundation. Our mission is to plant 1,000,000 trees and save 1,000,000 plastic razors from going to landfill.” “The response in the GC has been incredible,” Lindsay notes. “We see consumers in the Gold Coast are ecoaware and hungry for more planet-friendly products in their life. With a community surrounded by stunning natural beauty, there is a drive to live a more sustainable existence.” Working together on the business means the two operate like a well-oiled machine, with key roles and responsibilities to drive growth and the day-to-day operations. “We work alongside each other but have very different roles. My morning role is content production (photography and video), accounts and operations. After lunch I focus on product logistics and order fulfilment,” Mike shares, “Lindsay is all things marketing, digital, social media, sales, and customer
support. She navigates and steers the ship, while I’m pulling on the ropes or paddling. We both come together to generate ideas and support each other.” Now Gold Coast locals, Lindsay and Mike have found their community and a lifestyle that suits them completely.
“I WAS MID-SHAVE, AND THAT’S WHEN I HAD THE ‘AHA’ MOMENT!” “When we left Sydney, we literally put our finger on the map and drove to Burleigh Heads. On our first morning here, we were walking on the beach and found that almost everyone smiled or said ‘hi’ — it was such a lovely experience,” Lindsay recalls, “We knew this was where we wanted to be. Four days later, we purchased our first home together in Miami.” Going into business with anyone else can be daunting, let alone when it’s your spouse - so how does the duo strike the right balance? “We learned pretty quickly to work on our communication and always be transparent about how we’re feeling; if you’re not saying how you’re feeling frustration can build,” Lindsay says, “We’re much better at listening to one another and even though we don’t always agree, we absolutely respect one another.” Combining a consistent passion both for both one another and their business,
19
Lindsay and Mike are ready to take on the world together. “We want Make My Shave to be the leading women’s razor in Australia, before expanding distribution to the UK and the US,” Lindsay tells me, “We want to become a world recognised brand that stands for a quality product that reduces plastic waste and helps protect the planet.” Before we part ways, Mike reflects on a favourite quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt - “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.” “It’s a reminder that work, life and relationships come with many ups and downs,” he explains, “but those bumps are what make us compassionate, resilient, and dynamic people and partners.”

Why you should try
DryJuly
With Dry July approaching, now is the time to reassess and evaluate your alcohol consumption and embrace a non-alcoholic month. New research commissioned by Dry July Foundation reveals going dry in July is much easier than January, when most of us are still in party mode - you’ll also be helping raise funds for people affected by cancer. Dietitian and Dry July Foundation spokesperson, Chloe McLeod shares the five health benefits you can receive when taking a break from alcohol for a month. Visit the Dry July website at www.dryjuly.com to sign up and help raise funds!
1. 2.
Better gut health: alcohol is a gut irritant and increases the permeability of the gut (often referred to as ‘leaky gut’). It negatively disrupts the gut microbiome and can result in higher levels of inflammation. Those who experience gut symptoms will particularly benefit from taking a break from alcohol.
4. 5.
Quality sleep: often, alcohol is incorrectly referred to as a ‘night cap’. It may help you fall asleep, but the quality of sleep is significantly disrupted following the consumption of alcohol.

Quality sleep: often, alcohol is incorrectly referred to as a ‘night cap’. It may help you fall asleep, but the quality of sleep is significantly disrupted following the consumption of alcohol. Weight management: alcohol is very energy dense and nutrient poor. One bottle of wine is approximately 650 calories, which is the equivalent of a big mac and small coke. Taking a break from alcohol can help with weight management and/or weight loss. Liver: drinking excessive alcohol puts pressure on our liver, which over time can result in fat deposits known as ‘fatty liver’, which can lead to liver disease if not managed. Skipping the booze this Dry July is one of the best things you can do to give your liver a break, especially if you already have fatty liver.
Botched lip filler:
how to fix it or have it dissolved Cosmetic beauty treatments are becoming increasingly popular as more people try to turn back the clock, but leading cosmetic industry expert Dr Eranki warns there’s also been an increase in the number of women seeking help to fix botched lip filler treatments. Dr Eranki caught up with Get it Magazine to share what’s causing the problems. 1. Why are we seeing so many botched lip jobs? “We are starting to see an increase in the number of women seeking help to address botched lip filler treatments and related issues,” Dr Eranki said. “Unfortunately, the industry is not fully regulated and so it is important for consumers to take care when booking into a clinic for lip filler treatments. “While people assume the clinic is employing trained professionals with appropriate experience, the reality is that a number of clinics lack both experience and quality operating procedures. In addition, some also use lip filler that is not up to regulation standard. “The only lip filler that should be used by any clinic is a filler listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. “Combine all of these issues, and it is easy to see why there are so many lip filler issues.” According to Dr Eranki, while Cosmetique Cosmetic Clinics is able to assist most women seeking help due to botched lip filler treatments, sometimes the best outcome is to dissolve the filler, give the patient time to recover and redo the lips properly and safely.
“Injectable fillers aren’t permanent, but they can last anywhere from three months and upwards, depending on the type you choose. So, it is important to get things right.” Can you treat botched lips? “If you find yourself in a situation where you are unhappy with the result of your lip filler, try to seek assistance from the clinic. Often lips may look swollen while they are healing. If you are still unhappy with the aesthetic end result, engage in a frank conversation with the injector regarding your expectation compared to the results. If you are still unhappy, seek a second opinion,” Dr Eranki said. “In some circumstances, it is important to act quickly. At Cosmetique, we may be able to dissolve some of the filler to reduce the volume or even out lumpiness. If there is a concern with the product used, we will dissolve all of the filler.”
2. Which fillers are dissolvable? “Only hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved,” Dr Eranki said. “Hyaluronic acid fillers are a synthetic type of sugar naturally found in the body in the connective tissue. It retains moisture helping to keep the skin hydrated and plump. Over time the filler breaks down which is why they are only temporary. “Any other type of filler can’t be dissolved. Unfortunately, the only options are to either wait for it to break down over time or have the filler surgically removed.”
“We then inject the lips with hyaluronidase which breaks down the filler. It is a concentrated synthetic form of an enzyme that naturally occurs in your body. Essentially it speeds up the process of breaking down the filler. “Once the treatment is complete, we then apply a soothing balm to the lips.” Dr Eranki emphasises that the process of dissolving lip filler is not ideal, and all options should be considered before proceeding to dissolving. “The most important thing is to take care when selecting a clinic. Do your research. Look at reviews. Find a clinic that is well known and highly regarded. Do not fall for coupons or package deals. Several clinics, often situated out of shopping centers, offer package deals combining wrinkle relaxers, fillers and other treatments. It is important to note that each of these are scheduled (controlled) medications and should not be packaged as an incentive,” Dr Eranki added. “At Cosmetique, all of our injectors undergo significant training and then continue to undertake training during their work with us. As a national brand, this is part of our operations, but sadly for many sole operator clinics it is not. Make the right decision upfront so you don’t have to deal with any issues at the end.”
3. How does the dissolving process work? “Depending on the nature of the issues with the botched lip filler, we may need to dissolve part or all of the lip filler. To do this, we may apply numbing cream or administer a nerve block to desensitise the area,” Dr Eranki said.

Yes! You can have fun and keep fit As we get older, we start figure out what’s important in life, prioritising what really matters. But enjoying a good lifestyle, doesn’t mean you have to leave health and fitness behind. Here are five ways to stick to your goals after 50. 1.
Set a small goal and tell someone about your goal. How much fat would you love to lose? Public accountability is a great and simple way to keep yourself honest on any journey towards a compelling goal. How about 5 kilograms?
2.
Pick one form of exercise that you can do and add to your current routine in the next seven days at least twice, for example a 20 minute walk around your local area, walk the dog, walk to the shops, take the grandkids to the park, get off one bus stop early and walk to work etc. This is a great way to kick start your metabolism, and get
GET IT July 2022
your heart working harder than it has in previous weeks. Just like a muscle your heart needs to work a little more each week to improve its strength. Add five minutes a week and in eight weeks you will have turned your 20 minute walk into an hour! 3.
Buy yourself a drink bottle. Drinking a minimum of two litres of water a day is key. This is something we all know, but we struggle to make it work. You are probably busy and tend to forget, so go out and get yourself a one litre bottle and finish it twice each day. Our body is made up of approximately 60 per cent water, so its super important we drink enough!
4.
Have 5-6 small meals each day. If you are currently having 2-3 big meals each day that’s ok. Simply split these larger meals into 4-5 smaller meals and work towards 5-6 small meals daily. Leaving 2-3 hours in between meals allows your body to absorb nutrients better and it 24
keeps you energised in even periods throughout the day. It also provides a boost in your metabolism which is great for fat loss. 5.
Cook all of your food at home. If you do go out for a meal, make it a breakfast with family or friends. This will ensure that you aren’t eating the wrong foods at night. Your body tends to switch to fat burn at night, so naughty foods at this time will prevent you from losing fat in some cases. Home cooking also means fresh foods, less saturated fats and more than likely more vegetables which are rich in vitamins and minerals!

Most people don’t associate large hotel chains with sustainability. The Crystalbrook group (with locations in Byron Bay, Cairns Sydney and Brisbane) is aiming to change that. Their Brisbane property, The Vincent, is a sustainable, five-star hotel, right smack bang in the middle of Brisbane offering serious style cred alongside a strong eco movement. The eponymous hotel features works from acclaimed Australian artist Vincent Fantauzzo on its walls and décor – a stunning addition that only adds to its cool credentials. The rooms are spacious and colourful, with views over the Brisbane River or gardens. Their eco elements are impressively stylish and quirky too: there’s the water in 100% recycled cartons; bathroom amenities in biodegradable or recyclable receptacles; (so far, 1.9 million bottles have been saved from going into landfill each year); even the coat hangers and key cards are recycled; and all hotel requests are made via the in-room app, giving an ease to the concept of room service. Other than the stunning interior design, the next best thing about The Vincent is its location. Just a couple of metres from the Howard Smith Wharves, you’re spoilt for choice. The hotel is part of Howard Smith Wharves’ award-winning environmental sustainability and waste reduction program, which currently saves 94% of waste from landfill through recycling, composting, and repurposing: close to 1000 ton have been diverted to date (equivalent to 148 grown elephants or a cargo ship). Since November 2021, the hotel has increased the amount diverted from landfill in food waste, paper and cardboard, waxed boxes, polystyrene, and metals. If that short stroll from hotel to the wharf is too much, then head to the third floor of the hotel. The hotel’s Fiume bar is the perfect spot for people watching, while enjoying a platter of local cheeses and dips, or from their seafood offerings. Over 80% of fresh fruit and produce is sourced from within a three-hour drive of the hotel. Where possible, any food waste is processed through three on-site closed-loop composters, turning potential landfill into a beautiful, natural fertiliser used on gardens and given back to suppliers such as the Mini Farm Project who use it in their urban farms to grow food that they supply free to local charities. Compostable waste is sent to Nugrow, the state’s leading recycling and regeneration site as well as the Moreton Bay Shellfish Reef Restoration Project.
After all that eco-goodness it may be time to cool down. Jump into the heated rooftop infinity swimming pool. There’s truly nothing more luxurious than doing some laps while overlooking the glittering city below and across from you. When it’s this good for your mind, body and the environment, what’s not to love?

Lamb shoulder and red wine gravy Ingredients
Method
1 lamb banjo shoulder (approx. 1.8kg)
Preheat the oven to 140ºC.
1 Tbsp fennel seeds
For the lamb shoulder, toast the fennel seeds, Sichuan peppercorn and cloves in a dry pan until fragrant. Grind spice into powder and mix in the orange zest, salt, and brown sugar.
1 Tbsp Sichuan peppercorn 2 tsp cloves Zest from 1 orange 1 tsp salt 3 Tbsp brown sugar 1 carrot (chopped) 2 celery stalks (chopped) 2 brown onions (chopped) 5 garlic cloves (peeled and flattened) 3 star anise 1 cinnamon stick 2 bay leaves 1 chicken stock cube 200ml water 500ml dry red wine (I used merlot) Salt flakes to season For the herbed salsa ½ bunch coriander ½ bunch parsley 1 garlic clove 1 Tbsp white wine vinegar Salt and pepper to taste 50ml olive oil
Rub the spice mix into the meat side of the lamb shoulder, leaving the fat uncovered. Stand for at least 30 minutes. In a large roasting tray, add the carrot, celery, onions, garlic, star anise, cinnamon stick, bay leaves and crumbled the chicken stock cube over. Place the lamb shoulder skin side up on top of the vegetables. Pour in the water and red wine in the roasting tray. Cover tightly with aluminium foil and roast for about 4-4.5 hours. You’ll know the lamb is done when it is fork tender. Remove the roasting tray from the oven and turn it up to 220ºC. Discard the aluminium foil, pat the skin of the lamb dry and sprinkle with salt flakes – it’s time to crisp up that lamb skin! Return the roasting tray to the oven and roast for 30 minutes until the lamb skin is goldenbrown and crispy. Remove the roasting tray from the oven and transfer lamb shoulder to a plate – cover with aluminium foil until serving. Remove the star anise, cinnamon stick, and bay leaves from the roasting tray. Skim off the top layer of lamb fat – you can use this for the crispy potatoes! *BONUS ROUND*: At this point, if you’ve timed it right the potatoes and the fennel can go into the oven as you prepare the sauce and herbed salsa! Add the leftover contents of the roasting tray to a blender (or use a stick blender) and blend till a smooth gravy forms. Pass the gravy through a sieve if you want it extra smooth and transfer to a pouring jug. For the herbed salsa, add all the ingredients except for the olive oil to a small food processer and process until the herbs are chopped finely. Stir through the olive oil, taste and adjust seasoning and vinegar. Transfer the salsa to the plate with the lamb, shred the lamb and serve with the red wine gravy!

Roasted parsnip and sweet potato soup This comforting roasted parsnip and sweet potato soup is flavorful and fulfilling on wintery days. Seasoned with ginger, turmeric, and flavours of coconut milk, topped off with parsnip chips and yoghurt swirled through. Serve: 4 | Prep time: 20-25 minutes Cook time: 1hr minutes
Ingredients 600g Parsnips (1-2 large or 3-4 small) 600g sweet potato (1 large or 2 small to medium) 2 medium garlic bulbs 1 brown onion finely diced 1 1/2 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp turmeric powder 1 carrot, grated 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated 3 cups vegetable or chicken stock 400ml can coconut milk 1/2 cup red lentils (or 1 cup pre cooked), rinsed 3 cups water olive oil for cooking sea salt and pepper Toppings: 2 small parsnips, thinly peeled olive oil
Method Place the rinsed red lentils into a medium pot with the water, bring up to a boil on medium heat with a lid slightly ajar. Allow to simmer for 30-40 minutes or until tender, stirring every 5-10 minutes. Add more water if needed to prevent the bottom burning. Preheat the oven to 180°C Peel and dice the parsnips and sweet potato into roughly 4cm cubes. Place on 2 large baking trays so there is room to cook evenly. Slice the garlic bulbs in half, leave the outside skin on, and place on the baking tray. Drizzle olive oil over the vegetables and toss the tray. Bake in the oven for 30mins or until cooked through and are lightly golden brown. Add the diced onion to a large heavy based soup pot with a drizzle of olive oil. Sauté until the onions become transparent. Follow by adding the ground coriander and freshly grated ginger, stir through for a couple of minutes. Add the ground turmeric, stock, coconut milk, grated carrot, roasted vegetables as well as the roasted garlic scooped out of their skins. Stir well to combine, place a lid on slightly ajar and allow to come up to a simmer. Once simmering, add the lentils and cook for a further 30 minutes. Stirring every 10 minutes to prevent the base from burning. Add a little extra stock or water if the soup becomes too thick. While the oven is still hot, peel the smaller parsnips into whole strips to make the topping chips. Toss them with a good drizzle of olive oil to coat and lay them onto a large baking tray with lots of room. Gently twist and curl the parsnips so they cook in that shape. Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes or until they just become crispy and start to brown. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.
Pepitas
Once the soup is cooked allow to cool slightly before blending with a stick blender or a stand blender.
Nigella seeds
Check for seasoning, stock can be salty, it is best to taste before adding any extra salt.
Plain Greek yoghurt (or coconut yoghurt)
Serve with yogurt swirled through, a handful of parsnip chips placed on top as well as a small pinch of pepita and Nigella seeds sprinkled over. Recipe, styling and photography by Bonnie Coumbe. Visit her site here & Instagram here.

Can We Give Up The Ghosting? It’s the classic story of modern dating - you meet someone, you have a great first date, and suddenly, they drop off your radar without warning. Andi Lew, best-selling author and wellness expert, has just released her new book ‘Where’d They Go? Bringing Light to Ghosting Culture’. Get it writer, Holly Bartter dives into the topic of the ultimate disappearing act.
1.
In a nutshell, what is ‘ghosting’?
Ghosting isn’t a new concept, but rather a new term for when you’re ‘left in the dark’ about where your relationship is headed (it could be in a work, friendship or romantic context). ‘Ghosting’ means the person that leaves never explains why they’ve disappeared and then also never returns your calls or texts. They vanish, disappear and are never to be heard or seen again, just like a ghost! The culture of ghosting is becoming rife because we are communicating too much, everywhere on every platform, to everyone and all the time. Sometimes people just want to close down all tabs, or we aren’t equipped to communicate with quality language and that’s got a lot to do with our tech-oriented world.
2.
Where else in life are we seeing ghosting on the rise, and why?
It’s a reflection of how we’ve been conditioned to communicate with our “unfriend”, “block”, “delete” attitude - there’s a chapter in my book about who’s to blame and it dives deep into this. A study of 1,300 people, published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships in 2018, found that about a quarter of the participants had been ghosted by a partner, while one-fifth reported that they had ghosted someone themselves. Ghosting in friendships was GET IT July 2022
even higher with a third reporting they or a friend has been ghosted! Ghosting culture in business is also on the rise, and even job seekers are also known to now frequently ghost prospective employers.
3.
What impact does ghosting have on the ghostee, and what should we be aware of?
Research has shown that social rejection of this sort activates the same pathways in the brain as physical pain, leaving the victim wounded and in need of healing and recovery. Further research has shown that a teenager’s online and offline presence is considered to be one and the same. Therefore, when they are rejected online, or ghosted in the same way, they see this as very personal and very real. You date at the level of your self esteem, and what you allow is what will continue. My book helps you to see yellow and orange flags. Maybe you’re ghosted because you couldn’t take the hint and that ghoster just wasn’t well equipped emotionally to have a difficult conversation?
4. Should we take ghosting personally? Not everyone you lose is actually a loss. Why do we care so much if someone isn’t into us? You’ll soon learn that ghosting can be the highest blessing of your life!
32
And by the way, not everyone leaves anyway. It’s possible they’re often so busy navigating life and you need to get busy too! Having less expectations can be so freeing, and fun. Often not getting what you want though, is a wonderful stroke of luck. We often only ever understand this powerful phrase with the beauty of hindsight. You can’t control how people behave but you can change the way you react to it, so if you’re “rejected”, you’re actually really just being “redirected”.
5.
What has been the response when you’ve shared excerpts of your book/drafts with friends, family and peers so far?
My psychologist loves it! She wrote a testimonial saying the whole world needs this book. One of my ghosters thinks it’s hilarious. He can’t wait to buy a copy to see how I featured him in the book. Yes, he resurfaced. They always do! Everyone is loving the content and has a story they can relate to as they read it. I have a dear girlfriend who reached out to her ghoster after getting up to chapter two and she had some wonderful closure. They’re now really good friends. Get your copy of ‘Where’d They Go?” in bookstores across Australia or Andi’s website.
