“Life doesn’t come with a manual; it comes with a mother.”

It’s a famous saying, possibly not to be taken literally. But when it comes to me and my mother, there couldn’t be a truer statement.

I’m that adult daughter they create all the memes about.

Calling my mum to ask her how to bake a potato, turning up at her place to check if my new hair colour is ok, and (scarily), telling my kids to hang five when they ask me for advice, so I can give mum a call and get the right answer.

Think I’m exaggerating? Maybe, but only slightly!

Seriously though, how good are mums? I know I couldn’t live without mine.

For my kids’ sake, I only hope I “grow up” to become half the woman my mum is, so that I can offer them the same safety and security I enjoyed throughout my childhood, and continue to enjoy to this day.

Of course, our parenting skills alone won’t protect our children’s future.

my Passion to Life Having launched Eco Cheeks in late 2020, founder Tanya Roberts talks to Get It Magazine about working in alignment with her values, holistic wellness, and product innovation.

1. What inspired you to start Eco Cheeks?

I am very passionate about health and wellness, and part of that is reducing toxins. Like a lot of new mums, I started to look even closer at things after bub came along. I learnt that conventional toilet papers used chlorine bleach to whiten them, which can cause development, reproductive and hormone issues. I looked for an alternative, but there was nothing - that is when I became a bit of a toilet paper enthusiast and did it myself.

2. Throughout your product development, what were some challenges you overcame?

Finding the right manufacturer was a long process that took around five months. We don’t grow bamboo on a scale to produce products in Australia, GET IT May 2021

so we needed to go offshore. We didn’t take the decision lightly - we made sure both the environment and the workers were looked after and protected.

Quality was hugely important - if a product isn’t enjoyable to use, then people won’t choose it long term.

3. What was the reception to Eco Cheeks?

At first I wasn’t sure if I was the only one that didn’t want white toilet paper!

I put a post online with a photo of the white toilet paper next to the beige and pointed out the difference, health wise and environmentally. I was blown away with the response of how many wanted the unbleached - that was the confirmation I needed.

4. How do you balance family and work commitments?

A lot of late nights! In the beginning I tried to do Mum and business at the same time, but as he became more active that wasn’t possible and it wasn’t fair on him. I learnt that just because you have a home office, you can’t do the

two at the same time, they both need and deserve their own attention.

5. What are some ways you incorporate clean living and wellness into your daily life?

I have a firm belief in what we put in, on, and around our body can contribute to overall health. It’s a balance of staying active, eating well, reducing toxins and practicing mindfulness.

6. With the GC as your base for business and life, what inspires you about this part of the world?

Nature! I’m really lucky to live on the beach, which is amazing, but every chance I can we’re off into the hinterland, that is where my heart really sings - it’s a reminder of how beautiful this world is and how it needs our help protecting and preserving it.

7. Do you have a favourite quote that resonated with you across your professional journey?

Do what you love, and you will never work a day in your life.

Because... things are cooling down!

Raising children is never easy, but when it comes to raising boys, knowing how to instill the right values can be particularly challenging, especially in a society that often discourages openness and vulnerability in men.

Doctor and psychiatry resident, Dr Kieran Kennedy, spoke with Get it Editor, Nicole Madigan, about why boys must be encouraged to live a life of openness and empathy to help them grow into caring, confident and responsible men.

Toxic masculinity is an increasingly common, modern day term used to describe the pressures, stereotypes and cultural norms attached to masculinity and manhood that have the potential to negatively impact - even harm - our communities.

“Walking the talk is a good phrase to keep in mind here, and so fathers, brothers and men within the family being able to express emotion, show vulnerability, and not be afraid to show weakness naturally influences the messages about masculinity that young boys end up taking in.

But according to Dr Kennedy, it’s a term we, as a society, need to push back on.

“Mothers too have an important role to play – by letting boys and young men know it’s safe and still masculine to open up, share feelings and be vulnerable means they’re more likely to do so. “

“It brings with it a pejorative and sense of shame when it comes to masculinity,” says Dr Kennedy.

“A big part of this is the stigma that remains around men showing emotion.”

While things are starting to change for the better, Dr Kennedy says there’s still a long way to go, and the solution starts with parents.

“And research shows that identifying positive aspects of manhood is a better approach.

Other tips include: •

Being open and honest about feelings, and upfront when you’re struggling so young men learn it’s safe to do the same.

•

Avoiding phrases like ‘boys don’t cry’, which can deliver subtle messages about what a man should be.

•

Encouraging young boys to describe what they’re feeling and why.

•

As boys grow, having direct and open discussions about challenging outdated views of masculinity.

“It takes a community, and society as a whole, to start changing the ingrained messages about what masculinity is or isn’t.”

“Being the change we wish to see really does make a huge difference in psychology and mental development.”

“We definitely shouldn’t risk making boys and men feel that masculinity and manhood are somehow toxic or shameful.”

The real issue is the toxic traits themselves, characteristics that are often developed early in life.

“While there are some genetic and biological differences that influence how men and women think, feel and act, the bigger factor is when culture and society subtly influence young men to fall within expected and accepted ways of showing and having masculinity.

The biggest contributor, says Dr Kennedy, is the way society directly and indirectly dictates what masculinity means.

“Research shows that men are less likely to admit to struggling or suffering from a mental illness compared to women, and

The Global Trends Influencing Contemporary

Australian Design Australia’s property obsession has seen it create looks such as the Queenslander and Victorian terrace, but today’s homeowners continue to look further afield for inspiration. From the forests of Scandinavia to the New York coastline, Australians are taking on a world of design.

The only native Australian trend on the list, the ‘Mixed Cladding’ look, started in large estates where developers were challenged to create communities with a cohesive look, without taking a ‘cookie cutter’ approach.

“However, our love of the coast and oldworld charm has seen Hampton continue to capture homeowners’ hearts,” she says.

Scandi Barn A new modern take on the Scandi Barn style is eschewing the traditional light and bright palette to inject dark and brooding exteriors in greys and charcoal with minimal window use, according to Architect, Joe Snell.

Embodying a sense of timeless elegance, the style has been embraced by Australians and adapted to suit everything from shrinking block sizes to rural farmland settings, says Bowen.

“The Australian Hamptons style requires the open plan living and coastal style of the American original, but it’s more down to earth.

“The look is simpler with a reduction in ornamentation and palettes that suit the conservative approach to colour taken by most Australians. Greys are the mainstay of the Australian Hamptons look, whereas white on white or black and white are used in Contemporary Hamptons homes, which are gaining popularity.”

Based in Palm Beach, environmental consultancy Glowing Green Australia is dedicated to actively supporting the local community. Founder and Senior Environmental Advisor Larissa Rose talks to Holly Bartter about their collaboration with the Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club, educating our future leaders, and making a difference.

Having completed her studies right here on the Gold Coast, Glowing Green Australia director Larissa Rose has a distinct memory of her career taking shape.

“I was reading a piece on renewable energy technology in 2008 - at the time I was a GET IT May 2021

florist - and I ripped the article out of the paper, stuck it on my wall and wrote on it my new career,” she shares.

“I enrolled myself into environmental studies and I finished with a Masters degree in Climate Change and Environmental Management. Now I am a part-time lecturer at Bond University where I was once a student. It’s amazing how you can really create powerful outcomes if you put your mind to it!”

Today, Glowing Green Australia provides its clients with innovative sustainable approaches in their business, and engaging the community through education is a cornerstone of its work, starting in the early days of the business with ‘Glowing Green Crusaders’, now a steadfast program of the organisation.

“It is a big part of our brand - and we’ve really elevated this program since launch and even created an Instagram Top Glowing Green Crusaders nomination platform for kids aged 5-12.”

In 2020, Glowing Green Australia utilised the ‘Crusaders’ program in collaboration with the Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

“We had supported their fundraising days by volunteering and facilitating a kids enviro education workshop stall, and from this we identified synergies between both of our roles in the community,” says Larissa.

“We had several strategic conversations on how we could support the Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club on its journey to becoming ocean-friendly and reducing single use items, and we developed the ‘Palmy Crusaders’ kids activity leaflet.”

Now more than nine months into their partnership, the Palmy Crusaders project has seen an overwhelmingly positive response.

“It gained so much interest from the community - the patrons of the club love being able to purchase an environmental-orientated kids activity leaflet for a gold-coin donation, and they understand that it’s not only educating the kids on environmental aspects, it is modelling a duty of care to reduce landfill waste and remove plastics.”

Getting kids involved in taking care of the environment was a natural first point of engagement for Glowing Green.

“The core ethos of this partnership was to ‘educate, enable and cultivate’ environmental knowledge into our leaders of the future.’’

The collaboration has gone from strength to strength, with Glowing Green Australia supporting the PBSLSC in their submission in their Clubs Queensland 2021 Awards submission, which saw them winning the ‘Ocean and Marine Protection, Environmental Education’ category as well as securing the prestigious ‘Club of the Year’ award.

Next on the horizon for their partnership with the club?

The opportunities are endless.

“Our next goal is to bring out a new theme for the kids activity leaflets. The first Palmy Crusaders leaflet is ‘Reefs and Ocean’ and we have a series of themes we will be rolling out soon.”

Seared sesame crusted kingfish with cold soba noodle salad

Method

This recipe uses MSC responsibly sourced kingfish.

Kingfish

Prep time 10 minutes Cooking time 10 minutes Serves 2

Prepare your ASC responsibly sourced kingfish fillet into appropriately sized portions, then press and roll the fillet into the mixture of black and white sesame seeds – store in the fridge.

Ingredients 1 responsibly sourced ASC Kingfish fillet – skinned

Bring a non-stick pan to a medium high heat and add a drizzle of olive oil.

1/2 cup white sesame seeds 1/2 cup black sesame seeds For the cold soba noodle salad:

Sear the kingfish on each side for approx. 30 seconds – we only want to sear the outside of the flesh.

1 packet of organic soba noodles – cooked and chilled

Once seared, take your fillet off the heat and reserve in the fridge until it’s time to plate.

2 spring onions – finely chopped 2 sprigs coriander - finely chopped

Soba noodle salad

1 green chilli – finely chopped

Cook the soba noodles as per the instructions, then immediately rinse in icy cold water. Drizzle with olive oil to prevent them sticking together, then reserve in the fridge.

40ml Chinkiang vinegar 2tbsp sesame oil 3tbsp ketchup manis ● 3tbsp sesame seeds 1/2 lime juice 1/4 cup kewpie mayonnaise

In a bowl, combine the rest of the ingredients and adjust seasoning with salt, lime juice or chilli.

2tbsp yuzu juice

Once ready to plate, toss the noodles through the sauce.

Yuzu mayo Simply mix the yuzu and kewpie mayonnaise together To Plate Cut your cold kingfish into thin slices.

Place a generous handful of the noodle salad onto the plate and then a spoonful or two of the yuzu mayo to the side.

Arrange your kingfish over the mayo.

Garnish with fresh herbs and freshly cut green chilli.

Marinated octopus

This recipe uses MSC sustainable certified Fremantle Marinated octopus.

Prep time 15 minutes Serves 4*

Ingredients 1 Jar MSC certified sustainable Fremantle Marinated octopus (look for the blue fish tick) 1 Loaf Fresh Sourdough Tahini Bread sauce – 1/2 cup Crème fraîche 2 tbsp tahini 1 tbsp sesame oil Juice of ½ lemon

Method Cut several medium sized slices of fresh sourdough and toast until golden brown.

Slice into even rectangles and set aside the crust.

Take the crust of two slices, and place into a bowl with the lemon juice, crème fraiche, sesame oil, garlic clove and tahini. Let it soak until the bread is soft and then blitz with a stick blender. Pass through a sieve and season with salt, pepper and extra lemon juice if need be. Put into a piping bag.

To Plate Cut the tip off the piping bag and evenly pipe your bread and garlic sauce over the tostada

Take your MSC certified sustainable octopus, strain off the liquid and arrange a couple of pieces over the dressing

Fresh chives – Finely chopped

Garnish with chives, a little zest of lemon and serve with a cheek of fresh lemon.

King Prawns

with XO butter and Lime

by Guy Turland This recipe uses MSC sustainable certified king prawns.

Prep time 5-10 minutes Cooking time 20 minutes Serves 4

Ingredients

Method

12 MSC certified sustainable King prawns (look for the blue fish tick)

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius

4 King oyster mushrooms 4 cups cooked rice Sesame seeds 3 tbsp XO sauce 250g Butter, soft 2 Lime

To make XO butter, mix XO sauce, soft butter, lime rind, ginger, garlic and shallots together in a bowl until combined and chill until needed.

On a large piece of parchment paper (30cm square), add 1 cup of cooked rice, layer the oyster mushrooms on top of the rice then stack your clean prawns making sure they don’t overlap.

Top the prawns with one tablespoon of your XO butter and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.

Fold up the sides of your parchment paper and tie together using bakers twine to make a parcel.

1 tsp Ginger, minced

Bake your MSC certified sustainable prawns for 20 minutes until butters melted, and prawns have cooked.

1 clove Garlic, minced

Slice the top of your parcel and tuck in.

1 tsp Shallots, minced

Serve with lime wedges.

1 Red chili, minced

Lobster and chive Omelette

This recipe uses MSC sustainable certified Western Australian Rock Lobster.

Prep time 10-15 minutes Cooking time 5 minutes Serves 1-2

Ingredients

Method

1 clove garlic, minced

To make the mayonnaise, combine garlic, egg yolks, lemon juice, vinegar and mustard in a blender and blend till smooth.

2 egg yolks 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 125 ml olive oil 125 ml grapeseed oil Salt to taste 1 cooked lobster about 500grams (MSC certified WA rock lobster) 3 eggs 10 ml grapeseed oil 5 dill sprigs 2 tablespoons of chopped chives

Slowly drizzle in the olive and grapeseed oils combined together. Season with sea salt to taste.

Lay the lobster on a chopping board. With a sharp, large knife, halve the lobster lengthways.

Scoop out the lobster tail meat and discard the intestinal tract that runs along the tail.

Roughly dice all the lobster meat and add just enough mayonnaise to bind it together.

Mix through the finely chopped chives.

Check the seasoning. It should taste like your dream lobster sandwich filling.

Lightly whisk three eggs and season with sea salt. Gently preheat a seasoned nonstick pan.

Add the oil, followed by the egg mixture.

Using a spatula or a fork, agitate the eggs with your right hand, holding the pan in your left, lifting the base and sides of the pan and stirring back to the middle.

Flatten out the egg mixture and let it set gently on the heat. While the omelette is still slightly runny or baveuse on top, fold one side over and then the other and invert onto a plate.

Top with the lobster mayonnaise mixture and fresh herbs. Season with pepper and flaky sea salt. *Original recipe has been adapted

Courage, Pride & Community Commencing her role as Principal of Saint Stephen’s College in early 2020, Kim Cohen speaks to Get It Magazine about adapting to a school year in lockdown, the values of her community, and her passion for helping students find their ideal path.

1. What does your role entail?

As principal, I implement the vision and strategic plan of the College, ensuring that all that we do is done for the good of our students, and that they are provided with an all-round education.

I also make sure that the culture of the school supports our vision of developing determined, courageous and skilful young men and women.

2. You joined Saint Stephen’s just before the pandemic took hold globally - tell us about your first year as Principal.

Coming into this role at this time should have been particularly challenging, but with the support of an amazing community, it was much easier than anticipated. I learnt very quickly about the professionalism and can-do attitude of the staff.

An absolute highlight this year was when 11 students shaved their heads in Shave for a Cure. Other students came out in droves to support them and the atmosphere was amazing. Over $27,000 was raised by these kids!

7. What are you looking forward to for 2021?

2021 is our 25th anniversary year, and the major event is the Silver Anniversary Gala to be held in September - it will be a wonderful celebration of 25 years of superior educational offerings.

We are also creating a magical playground in the Early Learning Centre which will be welcomed by all involved in that area of the school and I can’t wait to see it!

Sustainable Goals I have dedicated myself to the weight loss and health industry for almost 10 years, and if there is anything that I am certain of, it’s that it’s all too common to see people struggle to achieve long term success.

Recently I asked our new clients to complete a survey about previous weight loss and gain. The astonishing result was 95 per cent of people were forever losing weight and putting it back on! This was alarming to see, especially when in Australia, 63 per cent of our adult population is overweight, along with almost a quarter of kids.

This begs the question: how do the five per cent of people that do lose weight, achieve long term success?

I interviewed 15 past clients to see if I could find common trends. To my amazement, their answers were almost identical, and even more surprising was that they actually used very similar language when speaking about their experience. Based on those responses, I’ve developed five tips to help achieve long term weight loss success.

Your goals need to be focused around your lifestyle habits. While having measurable goals is important, these clients all achieved success by committing to small lifestyle changes.

Change your perception of food. We have all fallen victim to the brain washing power of commercials; understand that these ads have conditioned our perceptions to believe what we perceive to be tasty food!

Take soft drink ads for example, these images portray beautiful, fit, and healthy people having an absolute blast. However, once you consume the drink, the sugar instantly increases your dopamine levels, it is highly addictive and we would do anything to get another hit. Understanding this concept can really help you to be able to change your perception about certain foods and what actually tastes good!

Be prepared for after your weight loss. Too many people move into the maintenance phase after their weight loss journey. Let’s face it, you are either moving towards something or away, there is no standing still. Remember you don’t have to focus on big, scary goals all the time, just subtle lifestyle changes. Focus on something that is going to better your health; even

something as small as being able to do an extra push up a week over a lifetime will have massive long term gains for your strength.

4.

Education takes a lifetime. Once you accept this, it will make it so much easier to make a commitment to educating yourself on living a healthier life.

Make an Investment into yourself.

You are going to have to invest TIME first and foremost. It takes time to be healthy, to exercise, to learn and to educate yourself on what works for you, and to shop and prepare foods.

You’ll also need to commit to a budget.

The most successful clients invest an average of five per cent of their yearly earnings towards their health and fitness goals. But, the end result is PRICELESS, you cannot put a dollar value on the way they feel.

FLASHLIGHT TAG This is a classic game for all ages to play at the campsite once it gets dark. The tagger has a flash light and they try to tag other players with the light of their flashlight.

Once a player is tagged by the light they are out of the game. The tagger continues to tag players until everyone has been caught and then a new player becomes the tagger and the game starts all over again.

DECORATE YOUR OWN MARSHMALLOW TOASTING STICK Get the kids to find their own perfect marshmallow roasting sticks. Kids can compete for the longest stick, the strangest shaped stick, etc. Use craft paint (non flammable), washi tape, duct tape to 32

decorate the end of their sticks (not the bit that goes into the fire) with all sorts of colour and designs. Each child will now know which stick is theirs when it’s time to roast their marshmallows.

ADD COLOUR TO YOUR CAMPFIRE A really fun campfire activity is to purchase some colour changing dust that can be added to your fire. Colour changing dust is inexpensive and widely available in camping stores or online.

Simply toss the dust into your campfire and watch the flames turn into a rainbow of colours. The dust is easy to use and lasts for about 30 minutes.

GET IT I TRAVEL GLOW STICK GAMES Before you leave on your camping trip buy some inexpensive glow sticks to use on evening hikes, around the campfire, or even for night time reading and relaxation.

You can even fill a water jug with water and drop a few activated sticks in to create a gorgeous glow lamp!

GLOW STICK RING TOSS Give each player 3-5 glow stick rings – glow bracelets or necklaces work well for this game.

Dig an activated glow stick into the dirt so that it is poking up out of the ground.

Players take turns trying to throw their glow stick rings over the glow stick.

GLOW STICK SKITTLES Fill nine empty water bottles or plastic soft drink bottles with activated glow sticks and line up like skittles. Use a glow in the dark ball (pet shops carry these if you can’t fi nd them elsewhere) to play ten pin bowling in the dark!

FIRESIDE JOURNALING Th is a good way to engage kids of all ages and trigger conversations about their day and the camping experience. Give each of the kids their own notebook and some markers and invite them to journal each night around the fi re and share their thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Young kids can simply draw things - older kids can draw and journal.

The journals are a great reminder of their camping experience when they return home.

WINK MURDER This is a great game to play with larger family groups while you are sitting around the campfire.

Everybody sits in a circle and the person

who is nominated to be ‘it’ has to move away from the circle and go to the tent.

Everyone else quietly agrees who the ‘murderer’ will be before calling the other player back to stand in the circle. The ‘murderer’ winks at one person in the circle at a time (trying to do it without It seeing).

When someone has been winked at, they pretend to die dramatically!

The player who is ‘it’ has to try to deduce who the murderer is. Once they guess correctly, the murderer becomes the next ‘it’ and the game starts over.

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE The player nominated to go first shares three ‘facts’ about themselves, only two of which are true – the other ‘fact’ is a lie.

The other players try to guess which ‘fact’ is the lie. The player who guesses correctly is allocated one point. Once every player has had a turn at sharing their ‘facts’ the player with the most points wins the game.

CHARADES Charades is a classic for a reason. It can be played by all ages, genders and skill levels, and it only requires creativity and an active imagination. Players act out a word or phrase without uttering a word or sound and their teammates have to guess what they are acting out in the shortest time possible.

Charades can be played with any type of word or phrase but keep it simple if you are playing with younger children and don’t choose obscure book titles or movie titles that they will not understand.
