As an editor and journalist, I receive a lot of press releases that include data.
Data about health, data about sleep, data about working habits and finance. Data about food trends, the property market and movies. Data about pretty much everything.
Some of it’s interesting, some of it… not so much.
Recently I received this.
New research indicates that despite 9 in 10 – that’s 88 percent – women undertaking full-time paid labour, almost half are still the primary caretakers of their house, taking responsibility for cleaning, cooking, comfort and caring for children.
As a working mum, this is one stat that stopped me in my tracks.
And it’s having an impact. While women continue to try and ‘do it all’ and keep up with the assumed roles assigned to them, their mental health is taking a hit, with 1 in 3 women reporting burnout.
For most women, this probably doesn’t come as a surprise. But when you see it displayed in numbers, it makes for a sobering reality check.
It gets worse.
Compared to men, Aussie women are disproportionately affected by depression and anxiety, and with more than half reporting their mental health is worse than last year, it is clear that women are putting their health last in their juggling act.
I don’t share this data to bring gloom upon your sunny Gold Coast day – quite the opposite in fact.
Let the data wake you up. Let the data be your permission to make time for yourself.
Whether it’s a warm bath, a few chapters of your current read, a walk through the forest, or a glass of bubbles with your favourite magazine (Get It Mag, of course!), today is the day to fit your own oxygen mask first – without feeling guilty.

Unlocking the Power of Retinoids
In the realm of skincare, few ingredients wield the same degree of transformative powers as retinoids. Retinoids refer to compounds derived from vitamin A and are celebrated for their ability to address a spectrum of skin concerns. However, like any hero ingredient in skincare, they come with both blessings and caveats.
The Good Retinoids are renowned for having a plethora of desirable effects. They have been shown to stimulate collagen production, expedite cell turnover, reduce sebum production, reduce inflammation in the skin, and help reduce pigmentation. As a result, they can be extremely helpful and are often a core active ingredient when addressing skin concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, congested pores, uneven skin texture, acne, and hyperpigmentation, to name a few.
The Bad
Unfortunately, there are a couple of drawbacks to retinoids; otherwise, it’d be too good to be true right? The most concerning side effect is that retinoids do sensitise your skin to UV damage, and so using enough SPF 50+ sunscreen every single day is mandatory when using retinoids. Retinoids are also infamously known to potentially cause peeling, redness, dryness, and purging, especially when you first introduce retinoids to your skincare. Purging is a phase of a temporary breakout of acne before it gets better. The severity of these potential side effects will, of course, vary depending on the type of retinoid you use, the dose, and whether your supportive skincare helps you prevent them.
Reti-the-what?
There are many names under the retinoid umbrella thrown around online, which can get quite confusing. The three major types of retinoids that you’ll come across in products are retinol, retinaldehyde (sometimes called retinal), and retinoic acid. In your body, retinyl esters are converted into retinol, which then gets converted to retinaldehyde before being converted into retinoic acid, the last of which is the most active form of retinoid, providing the benefits. Being earlier in the pathway, retinol will be milder and take longer to work than an equal dose of retinaldehyde. Likewise, retinaldehyde will be milder than retinoic acid. You can get retinol and retinaldehyde containing products in cosmeceutical-grade skincare. However, retinoic acids, of which there are several forms available as products, can only be accessed by prescription.

Welcome to a New Era
Discover the New RACV Royal Pines Resort
We all love a Spring refresh, and this season the stunning RACV Royal Pines Resort is debuting a luxurious new look and feel. With endless options to eat, play and stay, let’s take a look at the new features you’ll find on show at this 5-star Gold Coast destination.
Since opening in 1991, RACV Royal Pines Resort has become a GC go-to for couples, families, corporate events, weddings, and beyond. Tucked away in the serene surrounds of Benowa, Royal Pines guests already enjoy authentic dining experiences, 5-star accommodations and a championship golf course and this year, they’re taking it to a new level of luxury.
Heralding in a new era for the resort, the transformations have kicked off with a complete room refresh with a vision to “bring the outside in”. With guests enjoying room views of either the glittering Gold Coast skyline or the lush Hinterlands, the RACV Royal Pines Resort enlisted DBI Architects to elevate the look and feel of guest accommodations.
So, what does this mean for you? From the moment you enter the resort, you’ll experience airy, fresh interiors and an earthy colour palette and wood, brass and stone finishes that invite you to truly unwind and relax.
The resort’s spacious King, Twin Rooms and Executive Rooms now offer an even more relaxed and refined energy, the perfect place to start and finish your day (or enjoy a staycation and make the most of some delicious room service!). Decorated with works from the resort’s stunning art collection, the rooms are designed to leave you feeling centred, well rested and recharged.
If a massage or facial is calling your name, RACV Royal Pines Resort’s One Spa is your ticket to tranquillity. With a treatment menu that includes a Cleopatra bath, gua sha and even a Vichy shower, there’s something for everyone at all levels
of pampering. Having recently partnered with La Gaia Unedited Luxury, you’re also able to customise a takehome skincare routine that will keep the zen feel going all year long.
RACV Royal Pines Resort also boasts a Championship golf course, a treat for both serious and ‘just for fun’ golfers alike. Enjoy manicured lawns, stop in at Tee’s Clubhouse for drinks and light bites, and take in the sights and sounds of local wildlife and scenic lakes while you play a few rounds.
If dining is more your cup of tea (pun intended!), then you’ll want to book in at Videre Restaurant for a signature High Tea. With a seasonal menu inspired by indigenous flavours and seasonal finds, you can enjoy a range of Tea Drop teas and French press coffee –plus a glass of Mumm Brut Prestige on arrival to start the celebrations.
Of course, tea is just the beginning. Visit Trattoria Amici for authentic Italian with a fresh twist (we’ve got our eye on the 6-hour wagyu beef rigatoni) or Arakawa for some traditional Japanese cuisine - hand-crafted sashimi anyone?
For the buffet-lovers, Kalinda is perfect for casual breakfast dining where everyone can select exactly what they want. Panorama Lounge, Arika Pool Bar and Tees’ Clubhouse give you endless dining options across the day, whether you’re craving the perfect basket of fries or a refreshing cocktail.
As we head into the end of the year and the silly season, now is the perfect time to treat yourself to a staycation, girl’s weekend, family getaway or a solo R&R trip that’s sure to refresh and inspire you.
Having been a staple of the independent fashion world on the Gold Coast since 2007, we sit down with Cathy Hardy, owner of Shoetique, to discover the key to her enduring success and some of the must-have styles in footwear this season.
What was your vision for Shoetique when you first launched in 2007?
In August of 2007, we first opened our doors in Scarborough Street with a vision for a beautiful, independent European footwear retailer for women. We only had footwear and accessories back then, and once we moved to Australia Fair in 2018, we added more clothing and other products to our range.
We really centre around premium quality and a personalised service – when we first started out, there were more than 20 independent footwear retailers on the Gold Coast, and now there’s only three of us! We’ve certainly stood the test of time, and our customers know that they will walk away with something they love.
With such an enduring business, how do you adapt to new trends in the market and styles?
I think the biggest change for all within the women’s footwear industry is the wearability of sneakers with everything. Sneakers are hugely popular now, and we can style them with shorts, with dresses or wide leg pants, they are a must-have for our customer base.
The Heart & Sole
MEET CATHY, SHOETIQUE FOUNDER
Other popular styles include our beautiful handmade Spanish Espadrilles (a personal favourite of mine!) – I think it all comes down to comfort, and at Shoetique we really focus on aligning comfort and style.
Even with the rise of e-commerce, consumers are keen to return to inperson shopping for a more meaningful and personal experience – how do you like customers to feel when they visit your store?
It’s just truly personal service – you get service and knowledge of what we know and what could be a good alternative to what you think you need. Sometimes, going to a physical retail outlet provides you with the chance to be surprised.
Not everyone realises this, but photographing footwear can be very tricky – it doesn’t always come out looking the way it appears in real life, or conveying the feel. Showcased with our beautiful clothing, handbags and accessories range, getting to experience our shoes in real life makes it a really positive experience. You know you’ll always pick up something fabulous, but more importantly, you’ll be fitted correctly and there’s a higher chance of finding the right shoe.
When customers have experienced the difference, they always want to come back.
What are the ‘must haves’ for you to stock a shoe design?
It’s always about quality for us – we aren’t down the lowest ends of pricing
(or fast fashion) but we sit comfortably in the middle range of pricing. Nothing outrageous, but you’re paying for quality and durability (as well as beautiful and unique styles!).
We’ve really curated our range at Shoetique, European shoes and clothing (lots of Italian and Spanish designs), and women come to an independent retailer expecting to find something better. You won’t spot our shoes on everyone, and we cater to customers all across the Gold Coast who know they’ll find something special here.
When you’re stepping out on the town, what will we spot on your feet?
Our Spanish Espadrilles are number one! You never have a problem with comfort, they are super stylish and handmade – they just work for our lifestyle here on the Gold Coast whether dressed up or down.
Any favourite retail moments or memories across your career to date?
I love when interstate or international customers return to visit us – it gives me such a buzz that we’ve made that level of impact. I might even get an email from an overseas customer asking for me to ship something or looking for another style, and that tells me they love the product but the service is something they remember us for.
We’re lucky to have really endured as a successful independent retailer for a long time – we never sit still, and we’re always looking for new ways to excite our customers.
SKINCARE FADS
Skincaremyth-busting
Donna Ireland, a beauty therapist and natural skincare devotee of more than 30 years, has seen fads come and go. What she laments the most about modern skincare is that so many brands, in their quest to come up with the latest and greatest innovations, overlook the whole reason for skincare: to protect and look after our most important organ – our skin.
According to Donna, skincare has become more about marketing than actual skin health.
“The fundamental principles of taking care of our skin have been lost in the sea of products and promises,” she says. “The truth is, many of us have not been properly taught how to care for our skin. It’s time to simplify skincare and get back to basics. We’ve forgotten skincare fundamentals.”
One of the primary reasons we’ve gone astray in our skincare routines is the overwhelming number of skincare
companies bombarding us with products. The focus has shifted from genuinely caring for our skin to chasing the latest trends and miracle products.
“In the process, we’ve forgotten that our skin is not just a canvas for beauty; it’s a vital organ and an essential part of our overall health and wellness,” Donna says.
So, where are we going wrong in our skincare routines? Donna says there are some common mistakes people make with their skincare regime and products, and there are easy ways to rectify them:
Overuse of Harsh Ingredients:
Common Offender: Retinol, touted as a wonder ingredient for anti-ageing.
The Truth: While retinol can have benefits, it’s also an acid that can strip the skin and lead to sensitivity.
Better Approach: opt for gentler exfoliation methods that work with your skin’s natural cycle, such as manual exfoliation or products with milder ingredients like papaya enzyme.
1 2 3 4
The Popularity of Cleansing Wipes:
Common Offender: Cleansing wipes, often chosen for convenience.
The Truth: Most wipes are abrasive on the skin, many with alcohol as a base, and don’t properly cleanse as they lack both oilsoluble and water-soluble components.
Better Approach: Instead, opt for a twostep cleansing process using an oil-soluble cleanser followed by a water-soluble one. Remember to cleanse with gentle circular motions, encouraging the skin’s natural excretion process.
Overcomplicating with Machines and Tools:
Common Offender: The belief that skincare requires machinery and tools for optimal results.
The Truth: Your fingers are effective tools for applying skincare products and stimulating blood flow and lymphatic drainage.
Better Approach: Use your fingertips to apply products, starting from the outer areas of your face and working inward. Finish with a lymphatic massage, gently stroking downwards to enhance oxygenation and skin health.
Prioritising Marketing Hype Over Skin Health:
Common Offender: Falling for product gimmicks and marketing strategies.
The Truth: Many products are designed for profit, rather than genuine skin health.
Better Approach: Focus on quality, natural ingredients that support your skin’s function as an excretory organ.
Products rich in natural ingredients can help protect and nourish your skin without adding to your body’s chemical load. As someone who embraces natural skincare as the first port of call to look after the skin, Donna said nothing can beat a simple skin care routine of cleanse, tone, moisturise and exfoliate, using our fingers.
“Let’s simplify our routines, prioritise natural ingredients, and use our fingers to apply products and stimulate our skin’s natural processes. By doing so, we can achieve that delicate balance between moisture and oil, paving the way for healthier, more radiant skin,” Donna said.

Check your breasts this October
In Australia, breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women, with around one in eight women likely to develop this disease in their lifetime. Men can also develop breast cancer.
People of all ages should learn what their breasts normally look and feel like and see a doctor if any new or unusual breast changes are noticed.
The risk of breast cancer increases greatly with age, with about 80 per cent of breast cancers occurring in women over the age of 50.
BreastScreen Queensland offers free breast screening for women who are 40 and older and haven’t noticed any changes in their breasts. There are different benefits and risks of breast screening depending on an individual’s circumstances and age.
Breast screening is most effective for women aged 50 to 74 who are recommended to attend every two years. If you’re in your forties or aged 75 or older, you may like to talk with your doctor to help decide if screening is right for you.
Currently, only one in every two local women aged 50 to 74 attends regular breast screening with BreastScreen Queensland. Senior Health Promotion Officer Julia Foreman would like to see more eligible women staying up to date with this potentially lifesaving health check.
“If you’re due for a screening mammogram, please make time to book. An appointment with one of our female health professionals only takes around 15 minutes and could save your life,” Julia said.
“If you’ve moved, or changed your contact details, remember to let BreastScreen know so we can continue to send you a reminder when it’s time for your next screen.”
Benefits of regular screening include peace of mind, finding breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat, more treatment options, less invasive treatment, and increased chance of survival.

Rising Costs of Living Got You Down?
Saving Tips Fight Back with These
Forget giving up your morning latte – we chat with MoneyHappy founder and financial advisor Rebecca Maher for some practical tips to save more and still enjoy the things you love. From family favourites to fashion, discover how you can make simple changes that will have a big impact on your bank account.
With rising costs of living impacting all of us, it can often feel like saving money has become an uphill battle. With over 13 years of experience in the financial industry, Rebecca Maher is on a mission to improve Australia’s financial wellbeing, and here are her must-try tips to get smart about how you save and spend.
1
For those of us who love our fashion and beauty fix, do we have to give it all up?
Sign up for email newsletters from your favourite fashion, skin, or beauty brands to receive exclusive discounts and promotional offers. This way, they deliver you the best price throughout the year and you can stock up when there are deals.
I recommend following social media accounts of fashion, skin, or beauty influencers to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and receive exclusive promotional codes for discounts. Due to the social media algorithms, you’re likely to be targeted for
new products as new brands market to you based on the accounts and existing brands you follow.
If it’s an expensive purchase, you can even use Google Shopping to find the best deals as it will consolidate everywhere that sells that product and list the sale price.
2
How can we get the best out of our weekly grocery shop?
Avoid wastage! Use leftovers to make new meals, freeze food that you won’t use immediately, and use up items before they expire. You can even make a little extra at dinner time so you’ve got work lunch covered the next day – you get more out of your weekly shop and this doubles as a way to cut spending on weekly lunches too.
Online shopping is the way to go if you’re time poor and need to stick to a strict budget. You can tally up your digital shopping cart and you can take things out of the shopping cart much more easily than when you’re in-store and at the checkout.
How can we still enjoy meals and outings with friends and family on a budget?
Recently my family and I headed out early to run some errands and we were on our way back and stopped to grab some breakfast. We sat down at a cafe, and after looking over the menu for a few minutes (doing the maths in my head for our family of four) I realised we were up for a nearly $100 bill. We didn’t order, headed over to the bakery where we all had breaky and a coffee for $37, so it’s more bakeries and less cafes for us.
Write down all the memberships you have (like RACQ or NRMA) and the rewards programs you’re a part of (Flybuys or Woolworths Rewards) – your employer may also offer shopping discounts through employee benefits programs. Spend 10 minutes on each of their websites and write down all the relevant discounts you’re entitled to. Plan ahead and shop where you’ll save.
Planning ahead for outings is important too! Research the cost of admission, parking fees, and any additional costs associated with the outing. Then, look at the whole experience and work out whether there’s a way to cut the cost in whole or part.
Packing snacks and drinks can also save you money and prevent the need to purchase expensive food or drinks while out. I also recommend looking for free or low-cost activities such as hiking, visiting a local park, or attending a community event.
4
What’s a smart way to review our spending as a whole and cut costs?
Check your frequencies or intervals. How often are you getting the dog groomed?
If it’s every month – try stretching it to every 6 or 8 weeks and you’ve just halved the annual cost. See if you can do the same with other regular expenses (haircuts, personal training, cleaning services). By just extending the interval between sessions you could end up saving thousands per year!

— by Dee Hardy — Shifting Tides CounsellingIn our fast-paced world, it’s easy to think that happiness lies beyond our reach, in distant lands or exotic experiences. We often forget to appreciate the beauty right here in Australia. Let’s explore the concept of “looking locally” at life and why it’s essential to embrace all the incredible things in our own backyards.
Embracing local living deepens your connection with your surroundings. Whether hiking in the Blue Mountains, swimming in the Great Barrier Reef, or stargazing in the Outback, you find a unique sense of belonging in your environment.
Exploring locally fosters community. Supporting local businesses, attending community events, and volunteering for local causes create a support network that can be invaluable during tough times.
Additionally, “looking locally” allows you to live more sustainably. By reducing your carbon footprint and supporting local industries, you contribute to a healthier planet and a stronger local economy. Remember, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. While it’s natural to dream and explore, appreciate the beauty, culture, and opportunities that Australia offers. Take time to explore your own backyard, from hidden city gems to natural wonders in your state. Whether it’s

London calling
Words: Charmaine Yabsley
After many, many months in lockdown, the world is on the move once more. In fact, 56 percent of Australians are planning a long-haul overseas trip this year, with the top destinations landing in the UK and Europe. With the poor exchange rate, your bucket-list trip may seem out of reach. We hit the London streets to find out where you can enjoy the best of London town without it costing the earth.
How to get around
There is no better way to view London than from the river. You can opt for guided boat cruises (which are expensive) or do what the locals do and travel on the Uber boat. Use your Oyster card (the Underground travel pass, which can be downloaded to your wallet) and buy a Family River Roamer pass. A family ticket is valid for two adults and up to three children, aged between 5 and 15 years (4s and under travel free). Boats leave regularly from twenty-four piers, including the new Battersea Power Station (a great place to entertain the kids if it’s raining), London Eye, Embankment, Bankside, Tower, Greenwich, and North Greenwich. You can use the ticket for 24 hours from the time of purchase. Or buy online for a further 10 percent discount. (Visit https://booking.thamesclippers.com/)
Walking is free
Discovering the backstreets filled with nooks and crannies is one of the greatest delights of London. If you have had your fill of the Thames, then head to solid ground
and start exploring. Remember, London covers more than 1500 square kilometres, so it is best to choose an area or borough and take your time to wander and soak up the sights.
The history and culture of London greet you at every corner, which is why you should try to cover as much of the capital on foot. Use your boat pass to deliver you to your riverside destination, then go exploring. Most of the large museums are free (some special exhibitions involve a cover charge). Your can’t-miss list should include The Tate Modern: take the time to enjoy tea and cake overlooking the city; it is a terrific way to break up the enormous rooms of art. There are also many kid-friendly exhibitions and areas to entertain and engage the younger family members. (www.tate.org.uk)
Hop back aboard your boat, head down to Greenwich, and stand on the Prime Meridian Line. You do need to pay to visit the Royal Observatory and Planetarium, so if your funds don’t stretch that far, just soak up the atmosphere and view over the city from the lookout. Head down the hill to the National Maritim Museum; admission is free, and there is also a stunning art and sculpture exhibition in the extensive gardens. Meander through the cobbled streets to the market before finding your way to the Cutty Sark ship. (Hint: if you plan ahead, you can purchase a Family Royal Museums Greenwich Membership, which gives you access to all museums and the ship. (Visit www.rmg.co.uk)
Now that long-haul travel is back on the cards, where better to whet your cultural appetite than London, baby? We have rounded up the best outings to enjoy as a family that won’t break the bank.
If you are feeling energetic, head over to The Tide (North Greenwich Pier), near the O2 entertainment centre, for free activities, fitness classes, riverside dining, and Damien Hirst sculptures. (www.greenwichpeninsula.co.uk)
Disembark at Embankment and head up towards Leicester Square. Just behind Nelson’s Column, the famous fountain, and the four stone lions guarding the space, sits the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery. Beautifully curated, you will lose hours here. If your children are fans of story time, you can sign them up for the Little Explorers interactive adventures. (Admission is free, but book your tickets on www.npg.org.uk.)
If you have found yourself in Kensington Gardens, then take a left towards Harrods. For budding astronauts, designers, scientists and history buffs, you can’t miss the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the V&A. (www.sciencemuseum.org.uk, www.nhm.ac.uk; vam.ac.uk)
Easily accessible in a day- but get there early – all three breathtaking buildings are located in South Kensington. All visitors to the museums are free, but you will need to reserve your ticket ahead of time. The museums also hold sleepovers, silent discos, and special events, so sign up for their newsletter to book your spot.
The area of Spitalfields is just next to the City of London; it has had a facelift over the past several years and now boasts an impressive market, ideal for souvenirs, indie clothing brands, eco-beauty products, food trucks, and treasures such as vinyl, books, and photographs to rifle through. For an impressive (and free) view of the city,
Where to stay
There is no denying that London accommodation is expensive and small. However, the Apex City of London Hotel is perfect (and affordable!) for families, with family rooms, suites, and deluxe apartments. Each room is spacious, with large and comfortable beds and room to relax, watch television, or soak in the tub, using the luxurious Antipodes toiletries. The hotel also has its own fitness centre and infrared sauna – the perfect way to chill out after a day of exploring. There is a delicious on-site restaurant, The Lampery (the conservatory is especially Instagramworthy with a gorgeous floral roof), and bar; do not miss the opportunity to enjoy a meal here. The service is impressive too. During our stay, staff members remembered our favourite coffee orders and were extremely helpful with our day’s itinerary. The hotel is the perfect size and location – it is within close proximity to the Tower of London yet is tucked away in a quiet street, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
head to the Sky Garden. Found on Floor 37 of 20 Fenchurch Street, known as the Walkie-Talkie building, it is free to visit if you book ahead online. Take the lift and find yourself deposited amongst several storeys of greenery, overlooking the city. It’s free to visit, but if you want to enjoy a drink or dinner at one of the restaurants in the building, you’ll need to book ahead. (skygarden.london/sky-garden)
The Columbia Road Flower Market is one for the early birds; enjoy the kebabs, breakfast baps and coffee, served alongside the heady scent of flowers. Or, if you are heading south of the river, Borough Market is a foodie’s delight – there’s a plethora of food stalls to tempt your taste buds, plus a brewery, pubs, and wine bars to watch the world go by. Portobello Road Markets are always worth a visit, and who knows which celebrity you may spot? Get out early to avoid the crowds, wear comfortable shoes, and make a loose plan of the spots you want to hit throughout the day.
For a free royal visit, take a stroll down Pall Mall towards Buckingham Palace. Then head towards Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. There are free art exhibitions in Hyde Park (in the Serpentine Gallery) to enjoy, plus an impressive playground in Kensington Gardens.
Other worthy places to put on your itinerary are Richmond and Kew Gardens, the riverside walks through Regent Parks to Camden Market, and the beauty of Bloomsbury.
To plan your visit to London, visit www.visitlondon.com for information on tickets, opening hours and suggested itineraries.
From the Apex City of London hotel, it is just a short walk to the Tower of London pier, where we easily purchased tickets on the clipper boat. Another morning, we crossed the Millennium Bridge for a wander along Southbank and its literary markets and aquarium. One sunny morning, we headed north along the riverfront, enjoying the brutalist architecture and hidden tunnels and parks of London, before popping out in front of St. Paul’s Cathedral.
The hotel is only ten minutes from the West End, making it ideal if you are planning to take in a show or theatre performance. The Apex offers guests Friday night tickets to a West End show (we were lucky enough to enjoy Wicked; don’t miss it!) Plus, if you choose to stay two nights, you will enjoy a three-course meal at The Lampery on Saturday and a complimentary breakfast each morning to perfectly round off your stay. Visit www.apexhotels.co.uk.
Sustainability & Savings: Planet (and Wallet!) Friendly Choices You Can Make Today
They say two heads are better than one, and for twin brothers (and GC locals) Brodie and Roger Cook, it’s been the magic number when it came to launching their own sustainable laundry-sheet company, Lucent Globe.
In search of some practical tips to live and shop sustainably, we spoke to Brodie & Roger to get the lowdown on saving money and making sustainable choices at home.
1
Can sustainability and saving money go hand-in-hand?
Brodie: Cost saving doesn’t have to be a sacrifice for people looking to make environmentally friendly, sustainable choices in their everyday life. We’ve proven first hand that innovation and modern technology can be used to deliver products to market that are both sustainable, affordable, and perhaps most importantly without sacrificing on quality.
2 What are some common dayto-day areas where we can all make sustainable adjustments to our choices?
Roger: Single plastics are still dominating Australian households — from cling film, to plastic covered fruits and vegetables and even dishwashing detergent packs. We recommend making the switch to biodegradable, zero-waste products.
3
Can you bust a few myths about sustainability for us?
Brodie: You don’t need to compromise to make sustainable choices! Sustainable products that are good for the environment are often seen as sub-par alternatives, but you can get the same result, and in some cases a better result.
More Ways to Live Sustainably
1 Consider shopping secondhand or scour eBay for vintage clothing – by reusing, you’re creating one less product in the world.
2 Conserve water by seeing where you match up to the daily water sustainable water use of 155 litres (and see if you can shorten those!).
3 Compost your waste products (like grass clippings or food scraps) to reduce landfill and feed your garden high quality organic matter.
Roger: Understanding the difference between biodegradable, zero-waste and recycled products is really important. Biodegradable means a product can be completely broken down by organic matter — meaning it’s zero-waste — while recyclable means it goes back into a manufacturing system to create a new product. Just because it’s recyclable, doesn’t mean it’s not harmful for the planet – so seek out biodegradable, zero-waste alternatives.
4
What are your favourite “sustainability hacks”?
Roger: Using reusable shopping bags is a great way to be sustainable and save a bit of money!
Brodie: It may sound obvious, but walking is a great way to help the environment and avoid car unnecessary emissions, and it also reduces the need to pay for fuel.
5 Where should we save vs splurge?
Roger: Save on household single use items by choosing biodegradable, zerowaste options that aren’t cost prohibitive and splurge on those reusable items that you will need to use time and time again, such as titanium drink bottles or even an electric vehicle.
Smart tips for wining and dining
Navigate your health and fitness journey with these savvy strategies designed for the busy business professional. Or, anyone who enjoys eating out for that matter! Elevate your dining choices and achieve your goals without compromising your schedule.
1 Streamline your dining experience by previewing the menu options in advance. This proactive approach arms you with knowledge to make informed choices.
2 Navigate menus with a discerning eye, focusing on the smartest selections. Opt for options without heavy cheese or with reduced-fat alternatives. Embrace tomato-based sauces instead of creamy ones, and gravitate
toward dishes featuring fresh ingredients. Choose options without processed meats or oily cooking methods like deep frying.
3 When attending events with alcohol, ensure you eat a nutritious meal beforehand. This savvy move curbs impulse eating when faced with tempting treats.
4 Shift your plate dynamics by choosing extra vegetables over conventional starches like chips. Elevate your nutritional intake with this simple swap.
5 For those special dining occasions, pre-emptively reduce carb intake in preceding meals. This balanced approach sets the stage for a guiltfree indulgence.
6 Tailor your meal to your preferences by requesting dressings and sauces
on the side. Take charge of your flavours without compromising your goals.
7 Outsmart overindulgence by enjoying a small, high-protein, low-carb snack before your evening meal. This tactical move curbs unnecessary eating, like reaching for bread rolls.
8 When dessert beckons, offset your choices by avoiding starch-heavy main courses. Strike a harmony between treating yourself and staying on track.
9 Conquer larger meals by considering taking leftovers home without hesitation. Smart portions contribute to your weight loss journey.
10 Kickstart your dining experience with a refreshing glass of water. If you plan on having alcohol, alternate between water and drinks to maintain a balanced pace.
