LETTER FROM
Nicole Editor
Spring is finally here, after what seems like an endless Winter. Heavy news has a way of making time go a little bit slower, and this month, there’s been plenty of it. We are so fortunate here in Queensland, to have only endured one lockdown, and we enter Spring with some of the most relaxed COVID-19 restrictions in the country. Aside from beautiful weather and blooming flowers, Spring is best associated with, well, cleaning. The annual Spring clean isn’t for everyone, but there’s certainly some merit to it. Let’s face it, there are few better experiences than that feeling of freedom that hits you after a major declutter. But you’ve got to be prepared. Ready to make the hard decisions. Do I really need that ten-year-old vase? Or that dress that might come back into fashion one day? Should we keep the puzzle collection, in case we want some family bonding time during the next lockdown (even though we didn’t touch them during the last two)? If you are looking for inspiration though, this month, we asked a KonMari specialist from the Gold Coast to share her wisdom about ditching household items that don’t spark joy. But why stop at your home? Having already passed the halfway mark of 2021, why not give your body, mind, and soul a bit of a Spring clean too? Note: check out page 8 for some delish vegan recipes. This past month has been one of my busiest ever. There have been some great things going on in my life, but some stressful things too. And when ‘life’ takes over, it’s easy for your mind to resemble something like scrambled eggs, and a good mental Spring clean is the only way to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. For me, that means bringing water back into my diet (as opposed to coffee, tea, Diet Coke), spending mindful time with my family, and making time to read. Books are my drug, but I haven’t picked one up in weeks, and that’s a critical sign that I need to slow down, and take stock of what’s happening around me. I think many people are in the same boat. COVID-19 has made life strange. For some, it’s been devastating, for others, it’s been okay. But whichever end of the spectrum you sit, there’s no denying, life is not the same as it used to be. So, I plan to make the most of Spring, to declutter my brain, breath in and out, and reset myself to ride this wave that we call life.

GET IT I REAL LIFE
Independent singer, songwriter, and GC local, ELEEA, sits down with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter to talk about her journey as an artist, and bringing her skills together to create a life she loves. For Eleea Navarro, music has been both a natural talent and passion since an early age, writing her first song at just four years old, and releasing her first album at 17. In an industry that’s highly competitive, ELEEA reflects on the personal strengths that have got her to where she is today. “It’s taken a lot of self-belief, resilience and motivation, but it’s been a really fun journey so far and it’s exciting to see momentum picking up as I progress.” When it comes to sourcing inspiration for her songwriting, travel has been essential to the creative process, seeing ELEEA “backpack, busk and couch-surf” her way across 35 countries after she graduated from school. “I set myself a challenge to write a song inspired by every single country and city I visited. That idea turned into ‘The Travel Collection’, which now has over 100 songs in it, including the three singles I brought out in the past 18-months.” As an artist, songwriting offers a unique way for ELEEA to share her own journey, she explains. “I’ve always used it as a way to process emotions and find resolution, which is why my songs are usually quite sad, despite me being a very upbeat, positive person.” ELEEA finds her most memorable career moments come from making an impact with the listeners.
“I have two memories that stay close to my heart - one with the family of a young girl from my high school who passed away from brain cancer, and another with a regular patron who was battling terminal lung cancer. The feedback from them about how much my music helped them is what keeps me going.” When she’s back home on the Gold Coast, ELEEA makes time to soak up the sights and sounds of nature as much as possible. “The Gold Coast is a really beautiful place to live, and I spend as much time as possible enjoying the natural beauty, especially mornings or sunsets exercising on the beach.”
most of your career, so you have to be quite strong, as well as thick skinned, as there will be plenty of rejection along the way,” she explains. “You need a higher purpose that drives you to want to reach your goals.” ELEEA finishes by sharing her perfect ‘recipe’ for a fulfilling, dynamic and creative life. “I always try to remember that knowing what my passion is and being able to do it full time is already ‘success’, and if that builds to more people, money and opportunities, then that’s just the icing on the cake - but even without icing, it’s still a pretty tasty cake!”
Having received a Regional Arts Development Fund grant earlier this year, ELEEA is now in the process of adding final touches to her upcoming tracks, and working on the visual side of things as well. “It’s very exciting to dream those music videos and photo shoots up and get my team together to bring them to life. I’m looking forward to performing at Brisbane festival on the 16th of September, as well as releasing new singles in 2022.” As an independent singersongwriter, ELEEA is empowered to manage and drive her own career, and also recognises the importance of purpose in her motivation to keep striving forward. “You’re the only one who will be pushing you forward for 11

Top 5 styling tips for the man in your life.
Hmmm Spring Cleaning
When it comes to the men in our lives, we can’t deny that many of them need some serious help in the style department, am I right ladies? Whether it’s your husband, boyfriend, dad or your annoying brother, help is on the way! Getit caught up with multi-awardwinning hairdresser Paul James Graham from Paul & Paul Salon to get his top 5 tips to a less scruffy man.
— by Krysten Davis —
TIP 1: SIMPLE IS THE NEW REMARKABLE Most women understand the importance of a good shampoo & conditioner, but the most common grievance is that the men in their lives steal their good shampoo and waste most of it by washing their entire body. Men prefer to keep things simple. My advice is to kit your men out with a 3 in 1, body wash, shampoo & conditioner. Find one that will stimulate the hair and scalp while conditioning and detangling the hair and also leave his skin cleansed. Perfect for men with an active lifestyle.
I
presume that people used to ‘spring’ clean because they had been inside during a cold, damp, dank northern Winter and probably had an open fire and associated smoke and stains.
TIP 2: HAIR SPRAY ISN’T JUST FOR HER Hairspray can also be your man’s best hair ally! Waxes and pastes are great, but more often than not guys end up using way too much, leaving the hair sticky and waxy. A light spritz of hair spray can do the trick to keep your man’s hair looking awesome. Look for a product that has a strong but flexible hold factor, but also absorbs oils and adds texture.
Our Winters are spectacularly lovely. Nothing really dark and dank at all! I think in the current environment we need to think about a metaphorical Winter. A Winter of the soul in which we have been beset by uncertainty, plague and the very disturbing realisation that some of our friends and family are actually secret antivax COVID deniers and source all their information from Facebook and Sky News!
TIP 3: BALD DOESN’T MEAN BLAND With so many men embracing their thinning hair and opting for close cropped cuts it’s important to remember to protect the scalp. There is nothing worse than that itchy feeling of sunburn and nothing more unsightly than a red sore, flaking bald scalp. This is where sun protection is essential. A sunscreen that contains SPF30 and a moisturiser is also good for scalp exposed protection too. Try for a non greasy product you can massage onto his scalp and he’ll be singing your praises in no time!
It is time, after our Winter of the spirit, to cleanse and refresh. To clear all the cobwebs out of our brains (and pantry) and plan for what we really want in the future. Hold people, and if they do not ‘bring you joy’ feel free to remove them from your life.
TIP 4: PASTE IN GOOD TASTE Pastes and waxes can build up in the hair, but only if they’re used incorrectly or not cleansed from the hair regularly. For men that have very dense, thick and coarse hair sometimes the only product that might work is a strong wax or paste. That being said it is important to use it sparingly and add more as you may require it.
Look at what your habits are and what can be better. I need to stop reaching for my phone the minute my eyes open to look at social media and COVID numbers. Unfurl your mind and body in the warmth of spring GET MOVING!
TIP 5: LONG HAIR DO CARE It’s no secret, some men love to let it grow long. Regular cuts to minimise split ends are essential but for the time-poor fella that wants to treat his locks right, you can’t go past a good oil. Argan, macadamia or coconut, the variety and options of oil are endless, but one thing is certain, applying a small amount of oil to your ends goes a long way in caring for your hair. An oil that contains shea butter, a natural source of keratin that is essential for maintaining the integrity of long hair is a great option for both of you.
Move your body, engage your brain and keep with you only the people and habits that add to your joy… not your mental load.

GET IT I LIFESTYLE
We’re all spending more time at home than ever before, so it only makes sense that we’re casting our focus to organising the spaces we use every day. Michelle Anderson, professional organiser, KonMari consultant and founder of The Tidy Effect, talks to us about all things decluttering. In 2019, Netflix released ‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo’, bringing the renowned organisational expert to screens worldwide, and sparking a surge of new devotees of her KonMari Method. Michelle Anderson is all too familiar with the desire for a streamlined home, sharing with us the concept behind KonMari, making space in our lives both mentally and physically, and getting started with decluttering. 1. Tell us about The Tidy Effect, how did the business come about? I’ve always loved homes and started my career as an interior designer, but after a few years realised I wanted to help people get rid of stuff, rather than accumulate more. I now specialise in decluttering homes using the KonMari Method, plus clearing digital clutter such as files, emails and photos.
2. What is the importance of decluttering your space, and how does it impact other areas of your life? A decluttered and organised home is the foundation of your overall well being. When the home is cluttered, your mind feels cluttered, and anxiety rises as your brain reads all the incomplete tasks as it scans the room. When everything has a home, it reduces stress and conflict and saves time.
Start with deciding why you’re doing this, what your end goal is, and what your ideal life looks like. Write that down for reference during difficult points in the process. Begin with your clothing and if doing your entire wardrobe is too daunting, break it down into smaller categories. Thirdly, make sure you follow through with the discarding. Donate, sell, recycle, or trash everything you no longer want to keep.
3. What is the KonMari Method, and what makes it so unique and effective? It’s a very particular method of decluttering and organising the home. It differs from other methods of organising as we work in categories rather than room by room. Working in categories means we see all the items of each category at once, making us more aware of the volume and making us more willing to cull. 4. Can you take me through ‘digital decluttering’? Digital decluttering is organising your files, emails, photos, and optimising your computers to suit your use. We can get all your passwords under control, sort out your bookmarks and more. It’s proving to be a popular service among small business owners, especially. 5. If someone is daunted by the thought of decluttering, what are 3 steps they could take to get started?

TASK 1 Start by making a plan. Write down the items you have and how you’d like to group them together ie.spices, grains/pasta, canned food, sauces etc. On your plan, match the items with a storage container and determine how you want to store certain groups.
TASK 2 Focus on one shelf at a time and throw away any items that have expired.
“I organise by frequency. I normally put the frequently used items at the front of a shelf or in the clear container so I can see what I need quickly.” Mira Kim Webster, IKEA Customer Support
Key tip: Remember to record expiry dates!
TASK 3
Bulk dry goods in large storage containers to be stored lower and accessed with a scoop when needed.
Transfer your selected pantry items, one category at a time, into the storage solutions identified in the plan. Clear and transparent containers allow for easy access and prolong the shelf life of products.
TASK 4 Organise the pantry with frequently used items in easy to reach, or eye level shelves.
Key tip: Rarely used items should be stored at the top. Tips supplied by IKEA Logan

How to maximise your multi-functional
outdoor space
With an increase in urban living, and Australians building houses on smaller blocks, space in outdoor living areas is becoming a premium. By utilising the space available effectively, a well-designed outdoor area, even the smallest courtyard, rooftop or balcony can be a functional space for everyday living and easily transformed to the ultimate sanctuary to entertain and unwind. Here, Natasha D’Cruz, Home Living Category Manager, AMES Australasia shares smart ideas to maximise your outdoor space. STYLISH STORAGE Laundering products can take up a lot of space, particularly when drying clothes outdoors. A clever way to save space is to use a retractable clothesline which can be hidden when not in use. Take style and functionality to the next level with the innovative Hills Planter Retracting Clothesline (RRP $129). The unique patented design disguises the clothesline
GET IT September 2021
as a planter when not in use and has 15 litres of pot capacity with an in-built self-watering tray. Each line extends up to 6.3 metres, meaning it can hold king size bed sheets and there are 19 metres of total drying space. It is made with the same high-quality UV resistant material as other Hills clotheslines. The Hills Planter Retracting Clothesline is the perfect addition to a modern courtyard or balcony and its multi-purpose use means your outdoor area can be transformed into an entertaining space quickly when guests are coming over. CLEVER SEATING An outdoor space should be a comfortable environment for you to relax, so seating is important. Multi-functional pieces are essential in small areas. Consider using storage boxes which can double as benches, stools or tables. Larger throw pillows made from waterproof fabric also works as floor cushions. To free up valuable floor space, install a bold or patterned hammock to add a pop of colour to the area. Alternatively, built-in bench seating around the perimeter of the area would be an ideal solution for a tight spot. Add in a table to create the perfect dining area.
22
INTRODUCE A FOCAL POINT Focal points can divert the focus from a small balcony and make it feel more spacious and create visual interest. Focal points can be a striking piece of furniture, a unique piece of wall art or a small sculpture. Once the focal point has been chosen, build and place the remaining furniture and design features around it. This will serve as a central gathering spot to relax and connect with family and friends. LIGHT UP Outdoor lighting is another way to enhance your outdoor area and give the appearance of spaciousness. For a patio or balcony, the ideal options to utilise are string lights, solar spotlights or LED candles. LEDs consume less energy than halogen bulbs and are nearly maintenance-free, so you won’t need to change bulbs. These lighting options can be hung from latticework or installed around the perimeter of a deck to take up minimal space. Subtle lighting creates a peaceful ambience for entertaining and dining, but also provides additional security for the home.

My Way with
Words In July of this year, Cathryn Mora published Medicine Women: An Anthology of Stories and Letters by Female Doctors and Health Professionals with Change Empire. Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter sits down with Cathryn to talk about her experience creating this book, the challenges faced by women in the health industry, and helping others bring their stories to life. As a book coach, ghostwriter, and publisher, Cathryn is driven by supporting others to get their stories across the finish line. “My biggest career motivation was to help other people achieve the same satisfaction I did from finishing their first draft,” says Cathryn. “I wrote my first book when I had a baby and a full-time job, and finishing it remains my proudest achievement.” Over the years, Cathryn had many requests to create an anthology, giving an opportunity for a group of people to come together and have their voices heard. “I published two anthologies last year, and one of the authors, a doctor, asked me if I would consider an anthology written only by female doctors and medical professionals,” Cathryn recalls. “She told me all about how women in medicine are subject to a lot of sexism.” GET IT September 2021
From this conversation, Medicine Women was born, and a network of doctors willing to share their experiences quickly formed. “I was fortunate to bring together a group of incredible female doctors and health professionals to tell their stories,” Cathryn adds. “The ones which hit me the hardest are when the doctors have to tell patients that their prognosis is very bad, or even terminal. “They not only have the strength, but also see it as a privilege to support people in their darkest hour,” Cathryn explains. But with all of the privileges that come with being health professional, there’s also a darker side when it comes to female practitioners. “Every doctor in the book has talked about being called ‘nurse’, ‘love’, ‘darl’, and being asked things like ‘When is the real doctor getting here?’ “It’s incredible that this is still an issue, but it is.” Medicine Women brings to light the challenges female health professionals face, Cathryn says. “Most of the doctors are also mothers, and had crossroads where they felt they had to ‘choose’ between motherhood and medicine. “Male colleagues made comments like ‘Shouldn’t you be at home?’, and some of the 26
women were made to feel they were falling short in both roles.” Cathryn emphasises the importance of awareness across the community to break down these inequities. “Never assume that your doctor will be male. Know that female doctors and surgeons are plentiful, and they are also kind, caring, as well as skilled, incredibly knowledgeable and experienced.” The response to Medicine Women has been overwhelmingly positive, says Cathryn. “People are really touched and moved by so many of the stories, and are seeing female medical professionals in a whole new light.” Cathryn’s mission continues with Change Empire, where she and her team help others plan, write and publish non-fiction books, and Cathryn is now moving into ghostwriting celebrity and high-profile autobiographies. “Unfortunately, I can’t tell you who they are because I’ve signed NDAs,” she adds. Striving to make an impact and share wisdom with the world through words, Cathryn’s quote to live by is one surely echoed by all of the professionals who contributed to Medicine Women: “‘I am enough’”, she says, “It’s fairly simple but it underpins the work I am always doing on myself”.

Winter
Winter has come and gone, the mornings are getting brighter, and the weather is getting warmer. Allergies and spring cleaning are two of the most common words spoken when talking about Spring, so with that being said, check out below our top 5 Health tips for getting the most out of the upcoming season! 1. Get Clean Attempt one area at a time. Don’t expect to hit every room right away - take it drawer by drawer. Dump anything that you don’t remember buying or that has an expiration date. Check ingredient lists of your products. A number of chemicals in thousands of cosmetic and personal care products have been linked to numerous health issues - skin irritants, endocrine disrupters, even known carcinogens. 2. Get Dirty There’s no better way to ring in Spring than by getting outside and digging in the dirt. Enjoying the outdoors by gardening whether mowing the lawn, pulling weeds,
HAS COME AND GONE
or hauling mulch - is known to brighten moods and burn calories. About 250-350 calories an hour, to be exact! Gardening is a great way to keep active, but it has also been proven to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as reduces stress and depression. Not only will your landscaping benefit, but so will you. Invite your kids, grandkids, or neighbourhood kids to join you. Allowing children to get dirty is good for them, as well. 3. Get Fresh Think about farmers markets or local growers. How good is it to know exactly where your food is coming from, or know that it is grown as close to natural without additives or chemicals! Spring brings with it a beautiful bounty of fruit, veg, flowers and other produce. Think about all the colours that come with spring fruit and veg - those beautiful vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. This season also allows us to move on from all the comfort food we have been eating for the past few months and how fresh salads, grills, light meals, full of tastes and colours.

4. Get Going Consider Becoming an Early Bird. Studies have shown that people who wake up earlier are healthier than those night owls who snooze the morning away. Taking advantage of the morning light will also give you a good dose of needed vitamin D. And you’ll get a leg up on symptoms of depression. 5. Get Rest What’s better than laying your head down after a long day of cleaning, gardening, cooking, and enjoying the Spring weather? Laying your head down on a fresh pillow! It is important to note that studies show that after approximately five years, up to ten percent of a pillow’s weight is made up of bacteria, pollen, fungi, mould, and dust mites. That thought is anything but restful and will make it harder to get up early in the morning feeling fresh and ready to attack the day!

Venus and Mercury begin with pleasantry and harmonious communication. As the month progresses Mars shifts into Libra and begins to agitate. By the month’s end Mercury will station retrograde which begins a cycle of re-evaluation and re-assessment which gets resolved in October.
