LETTER FROM
Kathleen Editor
nspired. It can be a way of approaching something or a way of seeing opportunity that’s not always the most obvious. But often, finding the inspiration in the first place is what’s trickiest. Finding inspiration can be a pretty personal thing; some find it in bustling coffee shops, others in a studio, lab or boardroom. Here at Get it, we tend to find it when we hear about amazing people doing great things for our community, see beautiful fashion and beauty trends, and speak to knowledgeable specialists about aspects of lifestyle and health that can enrich all our lives. Mostly, though, it comes when we round-table and think about what you, dear reader, would like to read about. Considering we’re already well underway into 2020, we know it’s time for a little pick-me-up. It’s then fortuitous that International Women’s Day falls on 8 March, themed #EachforEqual. It takes on the inspirational (and logical) approach that “an equal world is an enabled world”. To celebrate this and take our March issue to greater heights, we bring you a jam-packed collection of pieces that’ll have you feeling motivated, give us all something to aspire to and have you buzzing to get to work like an extra shot in your morning coffee order. There are the fascinating reads “Career Change Calling” and “Get Educated”, which encourage us to take on career challenges in creative ways and face evolving industries with insight and gumption. Not to mention, there’s also the incredible story of Mámmaste, a powerful movement that is helping women and their families that have gone through pregnancy loss. To top it off, we have an array of profiles on women who are truly leaving a mark on their industries, as well as an article you should definitely take as a sign (trust us). If that’s not enough, there’s plenty health, beauty, fashion, and recipes too, and you’ll find something new to take from them with every turn of the page. So, enough talk, because inspiration also requires action. I’ll leave you with the words of Michelle Obama: “ Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we raise them. May we be them.”

GET IT I GET THINKING
Under the
Because… it’s time for a change of season
Influence
— By Krysten Davis — follow my kids on Instagram (I’m not allowed to comment, but I keep track of them and their friends). I stalk my friends on Facebook as I’m not a big poster or commenter. And as an observer, I have something to say about the use of social media… Can I express my utter hatred for posts that start with “If you have a daughter you love”? Yes! I have a daughter I adore… but I’m not going to share your stupid post with its mindless platitude, and NO, this does not mean that I love her less. I also hate posts that start with “Bet I don’t even get one like", accompanied by a photo of a sad and tragic child/dog/eggplant.
Bet you don’t! You’re certainly not getting a like from me. If this makes me a heartless cow, then I’m happy to wear it. Also, #blessed makes me want to #vomit. Are you really more blessed (by whom?) than the rest of us because you have a dog and a coffee? Or because your photogenic twoyear-old looks good in white linen? The sheer hypocrisy of lives lived on ‘the socials’ is breathtaking. People who YOU know have both a difficult relationship and a tumultuous life look to be on Facebook/Instagram the paragons of matrimonial bliss and maternal happiness. FAKE NEWS! Not to mention the people who express their heartfelt birthday wishes and how proud and ‘blessed’ they are to have such an outstanding child… when said child is five and definitely NOT ON FACEBOOK. If you love someone tell them… in real life… and don’t make me watch or expect me to comment that you are #soinlove. I love catching up via social media — it’s the keeping up that makes me cranky.

EDUCATED
s I followed a distracting trail of ‘new year new you’ stories in January, I stumbled onto something that ended up actually being useful — Udemy’s professional online training site. Intrigued, I browsed through all on offer, from digital marketing as a ‘side hustle’ to video editing, coding and counselling. I was tempted, and for a small fee I did invest in a couple of short courses — one to upskill, and another to try something brand new to me. I thought how lucky we are to be able to learn from anywhere. There are so many excellent possibilities at our fingertips for upskilling, changing career or taking up a new hobby. I’m here to insist you (no matter what your situation) don’t let them slip through! A key component of a women in business event I was at recently, was all about inspiring more women to move into technology and creative careers. Significant industries of the future were discussed, and what the most in-demand jobs will be (coding is where it’s at, by the way — and I wrote about this in the December issue, take a look: getit-magazine.com.au). Basically, we need more chicks in tech, but the problem is, many employment advisers do not understand what is on offer (let alone what’s on the horizon), and how to forge a living out of it locally and abroad. It’s hard to get advice sometimes, because the knowledge on careers of the next decade isn’t as solid as it was in past decades. Things change every day. Now, more than ever before, we have a chance to pursue our passions, but it could be in a form you’d never considered. A fun example to explore lies in the world of fashion. If you love it, you won’t necessarily end up literally creating garments. But, career options have vastly extended offline and in the digital arena. You can buy, blog, sell, advise on trends, work in publishing, create

social media and digital content, direct fashion shoots, produce events, design (clothes or websites!), film and photograph. There’s a myriad of both traditional and unconventional ways to weave stylish dreams into a sustainable income. Importantly, don’t let a lack of experience deter a decision to grow and learn. Attitude over experience will secure you opportunities at any age, and you can teach yourself the skills — as I was reminded. Get curious, dip your toes in: you’ll be surprised what starts showing up after that. Whatever you do, keep educating yourself. Things are changing all the time, and new opportunities are arising. Be

excited, not intimidated — change can be great! You could take a step towards change today by enrolling in a massive online open course (Google ‘MOOC courses’), presented by universities from all over the globe — many are free and flexible to fit with your time availability. Or, advance your knowledge without breaking the bank by skill-swapping at a nearby co-working space. Find someone who is happy to train you in their area of expertise, while you barter talent in another. There’s a world of possibilities out there, but they may come in an unusual form. Don’t blink and dismiss. Get educated and inspired about what learning options are available to you — your unique world of fulfilment, profit and enjoyment might be just a few mouse-clicks away. 12

What you should know before choosing a
ARTIST
Katherine McCann gives us the lowdown on cosmetic tattooing, and helps turn your choice into an informed decision > Choose an artist whose work you love — because you are buying the artist’s skill-set. > Don't be fooled by huge social media numbers or fancy marketing — these do not necessarily constitute ‘experience’. Personal referrals are always a good indicator of quality work. > ‘Feathering / hair strokes / combination / hybrid / powder / smokey’ etc., are all tattooing techniques. There are two modalities often used. With machine work, the needle punctures the skin multiple times per second, and the type of hair strokes, shading and level of saturation in the skin is determined by how fast or slow the artist’s hand moves, whereas a microblade slices through the skin to create the hair stroke or shading in which pigment is then embedded and masked. > Fact: microblading is ONLY suitable for about 20 per cent of the population, so be sure to double-check that it suits your skin (this will help ensure your results will last). > Research your artist — are their qualifications recognised and approved by Australian standards? > Does your artist have a solid portfolio of current videos and photos of their own work? > Make sure you judge a good ‘cosmetic tattoo’ on the artist’s healed results. > Does your artist perform all cosmetic procedures, such as eyeliner, eyebrows and lip tattooing? If they only offer one service, they are most likely restricted to one technique. > Cost should never be your sole determining factor a quality, reputable artist’s pricing is not based on “You only have one chance to receive the perfect tattoo, — your budget. You only have one chance to receive the you do not want to be paying to correct mistakes.” perfect tattoo, you do not want to be paying to correct mistakes. > Do your due diligence! It is so important to understand exactly what you’re asking for, as interpretation of terms can vary significantly from person to person. And although you may be seeing a professional, they are professional artists, not mind readers, so it’s ideal to be as certain as possible when it comes to what you are wanting to achieve. This also helps to guarantee both parties meet expectations, and one does not end up with buyer’s remorse, because they did not get what they thought they were getting. > Is your artist qualified and experienced to do colour corrections, removal or fading touch-ups? It’s also important to note that all corrective work should be classified as ‘exploratory’, as the end results can only be predicted, not guaranteed. > After your initial tattooing and touch-up appointment, you should not be tattooing the same area more than once within a 12-month period. > Ask lots of questions and be prepared for the artist to ask you lots of questions, too. A good artist will ensure you are a medically sound candidate, and that they can provide you with the right advice based on your face, skin, lifestyle and ultimate goal. Keep in mind that a good artist will also tell you what will and what won’t work (and should offer you an explanation as to why they have taken that position). A good artist will also design work specifically for you — they generally do not do ‘tattoo trends’. > Finally, a good artist will give you sound advice and ongoing support throughout the whole process, from the time you contact them and undergo Katherine McCann is an award-winning accredited the procedure, to post-procedure and beyond. Make your mark Meet two incredible women of the Gold Coast who are making a mark on their industries
BERNADETTE LANCE
MARGARET BERNDT
General manager of the Southport Golf Club
Owner and creator of MIRRA Boutique
have been working at the Southport Golf Club for 24 years. I started out working casually on the driving range picking up golf balls, as well as cleaning dishes in the kitchen. I have a love for the game and was hoping to be a golf professional. Throughout the years, I realised that perhaps going down the golf administration path may be a better option. I changed to full time and eventually worked my way up to become GM. Job opportunities like this don’t come up often, so for me to get this role at a club that is almost 100 years old, truly is a dream come true. There are not many female general managers in the industry and being the first in the Club’s history is something I’m proud of. The Board are very supportive of me and I’m grateful for the opportunity they gave me. I’m born and bred on the Gold Coast and lucky to be surrounded with family and friends who are always supporting me.” Working your way up through an industry teaches us many lessons. Can you tell us a little bit about how you found that process? Bernadette: Never give up on your desire for the job. If you really enjoy it and see that you have something to offer, then stick with it. There may be times when the road doesn’t easily appear, but if you keep chipping away it will unveil itself. Sports aren't just for the boys! It's important to have women in positions of leadership across the board. What qualities of a leader do you admire the most? B: People will always have a boss or a leader in some form in their life. Admirable leaders are the ones who are willing to make decisions based on facts, show empathy and listen more than they speak. This International Women’s Day, what message of encouragement or lesson would you like to pass on? B: The main encouragement I would give to other women is to back yourself. You’ll be surprised what you can achieve when you allow yourself to do it.
n the immortal words of Coco Chanel, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” To this day this statement still rings true, especially when it comes to curating a collection of the most perfect pieces for any wardrobe. Keeping a finger on the pulse of fashion and finding those hidden gems takes a trained eye, and an innate understanding of an industry that changes quicker than a model backstage at a fashion show. Running a business in the fashion industry takes the same level of skill, however, increasingly, it is about connecting with your brand and clientele personally, too. You must be open to new business practices, constantly strive for more and never stop learning. It’s also about believing in yourself and taking a chance — passion, savviness and a deep respect for the craft are key to succeeding in the world of fashion. As Margaret described, “I started out in the fashion industry, opening my first store over 24 years ago with no previous experience. I’ve learnt so much along the way, but I am certainly still learning every day.” Being in the creative industries and building your brand is hard work! What’s your advice? Margaret: It takes a lot of hard work to run a successful small business. My role is mostly behind the scenes; ordering, purchasing stock for the coming season and, of course, merchandising. This is where I get to use my creativity — this is the part I really enjoy! What’s the most rewarding part of your work? M: I get to spend two days a week on the shop floor, not only is this important but it’s so rewarding when you help a customer find an outfit that they feel comfortable and happy in. This International Women’s Day, what message of encouragement or lesson would you like to pass on? M: A good team is important, and I am very lucky to have two wonderful ladies, Chris and Ann, who work with me. They genuinely care about the business and our customers. Our motto is to “provide a premium shopping experience” and this is just what we always strive to do.

Technology andteams
With our remote and freelance workforce rapidly growing, teamwork and productivity are top of mind. Stephen Molloy shares a business basics guide to help us out e’re well and truly on our way into the year, and as we’re now in a new decade, it’s important to focus on a 2020 vision (excuse the pun). We know the goal of any product or service — now — is to create memorable experiences for customers. But what about the great people you work with — what’s their experience like? If you’re working with or leading a team, as we move further into this decade, it will become ever more important to engage in tangible ways that people value. Time is our most precious commodity — it’s vital to learn how to spotlight opportunities and siphon distractions, for you and your co-workers. Whether you’re a freelancer working as part of a project; or managing team members spread across the country or the globe, with technology readily available, there’s no excuse to not collaborate better and GSD (Get Stuff Done). A few simple tips: Set up group chats Small companies with 100 employees lose about $420,000 per year due to inefficient communication among employees (productivity suffers). Simple chat apps like Slack, WhatsApp, Troop Messenger, HipChat, Campfire, Google Hangouts, Grove, Podio, Hall, Flowdock and WeChat can be easily set up and usually have a premium version available for business use. And, chat often means simple questions are solved more effectively than within a confusing and lengthy email chain. Enhanced chat and collaboration platforms are being adopted more and more — in the future these will replace emails. Create the environment to collaborate Brainstorming sessions allow everyone to contribute and feel valued. I’ve worked at companies where everyone’s ideas are valued, and at businesses where this is not done so well. Favouritism and office politics don’t get the best out of people. My philosophy is that the best idea wins — but you must get everyone together to make this happen. Video chat March 2020
“Time is our most precious commodity — it’s vital to learn how to spotlight opportunities and siphon distractions, for you and your co-workers.” and collaboration apps mean everyone can be a part of a conversation, no matter where they’re based, and offer flexibility for those who can’t always get into the office, if there is one. Make project management fun I always hated filling in my timesheet, partly due to only ever remembering to do it late afternoon (when it was already late Friday afternoon)! This is easily avoidable with the use of project management apps. Team members know who is working on what, deadlines and task dependencies. This tracking keeps projects on task and highlights gaps. Basecamp is probably the most well-known project management app and the one I prefer to use. You can create a dynamic, tech-forward and productive work culture simply by: l Having empathy for your team members and building emotional connections — especially important if you’re remote working predominantly online. l Stop multitasking! It slows you down, increases stress levels, and causes mistakes. Master unitasking instead. l Offering incentives. If your team achieves a goal, find a way to celebrate together, and share praise. l Encouraging feedback, suggestions, input and ideas, and showing that these are valued. l Praising productivity rather than simply time spent at the office. l Leading with the mantra: there are only opportunities in business, not problems. l Being open-minded to using technology and apps to collaborate. GET IT I BUSINESS eciding to start a business is a life-changing move. Perhaps you’ve reached the top of your game while working for an organisation and want to launch your own start-up, or maybe you’ve got a unique product idea and you’re thinking about dipping your toes into the market. No matter which way you look at it, launching a business involves risk: risking the security of your full-time job, risking a hefty chunk of your savings or just risking your own reputation. There’s a lot to ponder, but you can make an informed decision by following these four simple steps.
The 4-step guide TO STARTING A
successful business Alan Manly, founder and CEO of Group Colleges Australia, teaches us aspiring entrepreneurs how to make our dreams come to fruition Make a plan and write it down After all the thinking, talking and dreaming comes the hard part: writing it down so someone else can understand that your dream is a genuine business opportunity. Few people enjoy writing a business plan but it’s a great ‘sobriety test’ for bright entrepreneurs with great new ideas — and a must if you are planning on approaching investors. There are plenty of templates available online, so grab one and start writing. Ask yourself tough questions — as if you were asking for money from your arch enemy — then answer them. Your business plan will guide you and equip you with the answers to the many difficult questions you’ll be asked along the way. Assess your skills If you’ve already achieved success in your chosen field, work out what skills contributed to that success. Start-ups are created by people from all backgrounds with an equally wide range of skills. A frank assessment of your skills may tell you that you are a subject matter expert but that other people have also contributed to your success. It’s vital to understand the skills you have, and how you can complement them by hiring the right people in your team. Starting a
business requires a wide range of skills, and your people will be your greatest asset. Time it right When launching a new business, timing is everything. There may never be a right time to launch, but through careful calculation you might find an acceptable time. Evaluate the employer benefits you currently enjoy, such as paid leave, sick leave and the ability to sleep not worrying about company cashflow. Write down the entire value of your salary package including the extras. Can you afford to live without it for a while? Can you operate successfully without the structure?
it comes to timing, arm yourself with the facts and be realistic. Learn through experience You can be given all the advice in the world but just like riding a push bike the for the first time, starting a business is exciting and frightening. If you misjudge a turn, you will almost certainly crash and hurt yourself. That’s called experience! You can’t succeed if you’re not willing to fail a few times along the way. Get up, dust yourself off and keep going. As Winston Churchill famously said: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.” With so much on the line, it’s a wonder anyone decides to start a business. But
Let’s face it, today’s workplace can be a jungle for the unaware and underprepared. It’s also important to analyse the market to figure out when to take the leap. Is there a current need for your product or service? Is there a trend for growth in your chosen industry? How long will it take to establish yourself and will the market have moved on in that time? What is the competition like? When 23
being courageous enough to take a few initial steps can reap huge rewards. So be brave. You might surprise yourself — and your competitors. Alan is the author of The Unlikely Entrepreneur and When There Are Too Many Lawyers There Is No Justice. To find out more visit alanmanly.com.au

FOUNDING A MOVEMENT Kathleen Loxton shares the extraordinary work of Nathalie Belle-Larant, founder of Māmmaste, a movement that is changing lives by helping women and their families through pregnancy loss
“I believe we become
more of who we are meant to be every day, and sometimes it takes a while to know what that is.”
here it all began “I believe we become more of who we are meant to be every day, and sometimes it takes a while to know what that is.” At a young age Nathalie had a desire to help others, whether it was other people or small, wounded animals. Nathalie admitted, “I can’t stand seeing people suffer. Not just physically but also psychologically... ” Today she uses these skills to help people and her philanthropic drive isn’t slowing down. Author, speaker, intuitive healer, fertility coach, transformation coach and soul midwife, are among the roles Nathalie has undertaken. However, at first Nathalie went the traditional route, earning university degrees, graduating summa cum laude from a prestigious university in Paris, France, and going on to excel in international law and IT. It took her a while to follow her calling — being a high achiever, Nathalie focussed on always doing well. In her 30s, Nathalie travelled internationally for work and was at a networking event when she was introduced to neuro-linguistic programming (NLP for short, it is, according to Psychology Today, “a set of language and sensory-based interventions and behaviour-modification techniques intended to help improve the client’s self-awareness, confidence, communication skills, and social actions”). March 2020
Having been aware of Maria Montessori’s educational approach, and NLP, Nathalie continued to be well-read in these areas, but she didn’t know quite how to utilise this knowledge until later. As a passion and hobby, Nathalie also studied Ericksonian hypnosis, which “felt like home” while she continued with her high-flying career. When she reached her late 30s/early 40s, Nathalie began to think about starting a family after meeting the man of her dreams. However, this was not an easy path for the couple, but it led her to where she is now and a deeper scientific and emotional understanding of dealing with trauma.
The story behind the movement “No matter how educated, and highfunctioning, intelligent, or successful I was, nothing had really prepared me for becoming a mother.” Nathalie is well-versed in the changes, responsibilities, and new experiences motherhood brings, and she shared her experience with us, in hope her story will empower and inform others. Sadly, Nathalie’s journey to motherhood wasn’t an easy one, and as she so eloquently put it,“Life and death often intertwine in the cycle of life.” And after losing three pregnancies in the space of four years, Nathalie and her husband had a beautiful rainbow baby. Looking back, Nathalie explained 24
that while she didn’t have trouble falling pregnant, which she noted is becoming more and more common today due to multiple lifestyle and scientific factors, staying pregnant was the issue. Nathalie elaborated, saying,“My road to motherhood was filled with terrifying and devastating choices that I didn’t feel equipped for at all… “I remember one time I was going to fly, I was about to jump on an aeroplane, and I was in the middle of a miscarriage, so I spent the two hours in the lounge’s bathroom, gushing blood and terrified at the idea I was going to lose my baby in the toilet. These are the things that we don’t know, because although we hear about, and know,‘yes miscarriages happen’, we somehow feel that it happens to others, not to us. Or [we think],‘falling pregnant is a natural thing, so why wouldn’t I?’ ‘It’s a natural thing, it should be easy’…” Nathalie spoke of the fact that in these circumstances you can be faced with decisions you feel so utterly alone in making, such as an abortion she was forced to hide. Like many women, Nathalie felt the pressure to lie to close friends and family about the abortion, and, shockingly, had the surgeon throw the guilt back in her face post-procedure.There were also more impossible choices along the way, including high-risk, but critical, medical tests and going into labour at 20 weeks. Video stills by Michael Pole, southernstockimages.com
The start of Māmmaste “I wanted to create a movement that was really going to honour our experiences.” For Nathalie, depression and suicidal thoughts were a wakeup call. She soon contacted a naturopath and clairvoyant with the driving force of “I cannot give up on my family, my son. It’s not possible.” From there she wanted to create a movement reflective of her family’s experience. And that’s where the name Mámmaste came from, it’s a beautiful play on namaste, which embodies the mantra “my child, the divine in me bows to the divine in you”. In 2018 Nathalie launched a meet-up group in her local area, starting the Facebook group to arrange a meeting at a private space, providing intimacy, a social outlet and support. Today, Mámmaste’s numbers continue to grow.

When the unthinkable happens, it is undoubtedly devastating, but Nathalie is encouraging the community to start a conversation about miscarriages, abortions, still births, and neonatal loss, because stories like Nathalie’s are more common then we think, and together we can better support those affected. “There’s terrifying statistics; I mean, there’s 2.6 million stillborn babies every year that have been recorded by the World Health Organization,” said Nathalie. Globally, not all deaths are recorded, however, and in Australia there are “six stillborn babies every day” alone. “No parent should have to carry the coffin of their baby to the grave and have to live through the grief of losing a child. Unfortunately, that’s the reality of what happens,” Nathalie added. Falling pregnant again and handling interactions with others surrounding such loss, including young children and explaining to them why the little brother or sister they were expecting isn’t coming home, are some gargantuan tasks faced. It’s never easy, as Nathalie described,“no matter how rational, how researched, how intelligent and how informed you can be.” Our culture tends to “sweep it under the carpet” when it comes to such loss, and “unless we are equipped to deal with it as a community and individuals” the situation won’t improve. Nathalie’s hope is to “open [people’s] minds to the fact that it is possible, and it can happen, and we need to be able to support, even if it doesn’t happen to us, we need to be able to give space to families that are going through such an ordeal.” Nathalie’s advice, to take onboard when the time is right, is inspiring:“Use that extreme grief as an opportunity for growth, learning and transformation.” And as Nathalie quoted from a Ted Talk we mentioned,“We can move forward, but we don’t want to move on.” Another crucial piece of advice is “don’t leave the pain untreated, as it has dramatic consequences to not only your mental health as an individual, but also for the people around us.” It was actually a conversation Nathalie had with her son, while she suffered from postnatal depression, which highlighted to Nathalie that grief manifests in different ways, and when her thoughts took her to dark places she knew it was time to find the light. 25
“No matter how
educated, and highfunctioning, intelligent, or successful I was, nothing had really prepared me for becoming a mother.” Looking to the future
“Educate generations in selfempowerment and healing.” Educating future generations is a large part of Nathalie’s goal, and she hopes for more chapters of Mámmaste to be founded around the planet. Presently, her message of hope and awareness has also led to Nathalie writing a book, Raising Leaders. The Influential Motherhood Academy for Evolutionary Women and Visionaries. Another current and exciting project Nathalie is working on is Motherhood by Design, which is described as the following:“Being a mother and a leader are no longer exclusive; as we reveal your unique motherhood identity, we catalyse the uncertainties and struggles of being or becoming a mother into pathways to new and unprecedented levels of fulfilment, not only as a parent, but more critically as a woman, lover, creator, influencer, contributor and leader.” Nathalie is excited, curious and hopeful about her future and Mámmaste’s, and in the spirit of 2020 encourages us to ask the women around us if they, too, have experienced a loss. With one in four women experiencing miscarriages (most in their first 12 weeks), spreading awareness is crucial, in particular using #1in4 on social media. You can also keep an eye on Queensland Women's Week 2020 for more ways to help our community. With SBS publishing the piece “Early tests raise hopes new drug could help lower rates of miscarriages” in January this year, and changing laws around leave after pregnancy loss, there is potential for a brighter future, but we must talk about it. pack leader Aussies love our working dogs — but are they right for your family? Sally Purbrick-Illek shares her story and tips on how to keep working dog breeds happy in an urban environment.
grew up in Oregon, USA, and as a kid I wanted to be a vet. I ended up being a maths and science teacher, following in my nuclear physicist father's footsteps! I’ve always loved animals and would bring strays home and help my grandparents on their hobby farm. My husband and I spent our young adult life travelling and working around the world, and we couldn’t have pets. We moved to Australia in 2004 and with space and plans to settle, the first thing we did was adopt Lucy, a German Shepherd x Shar-Pei, from the Animal Welfare League (AWL). Lucy adored kids and we visited schools a few times a week with the AWL’s SHARE Reading Dogs program. She was a wonderful dog — we were devastated when she died. Our home felt empty and we knew we’d adopt another dog. I'm sporty so researched breeds that need an active owner. We rescued Pepper, a 6-month-old border collie x kelpie, who came from a life of abuse. She was incredibly timid and scared of everything, so to build her confidence we tried agility training. She loves it and is also successful in other dog sports like tracking and scent work. Champ, a four-year-old border collie with hip dysplasia, also joined our pack. Happily, after intensive physical therapy and a raw food diet, he is once again able to herd! We have won several titles in sheep and duck herding. Champ also has a beautiful temperament, and we volunteer at an assisted care facility, with the SHARE Reading Dogs Program, the PreSchoolers Overcoming (dog) Phobia Program and the Australian Veterinary Association Pet PEP program. I've recently added a third dog to my family, puppy Jazz, who is a working border collie and shows great promise as a herding dog. I’ve now had a lot of experience with working dog breeds like border collies, cattle dogs and kelpies, and I’m passionate about helping other people understand how to give their dogs the best life possible. Working dogs make wonderful pets, but they need to be in an appropriate home. A bored or under-exercised dog can be highly destructive and bark anxiously. I have encountered many working dogs that are re-homed or sent to shelters because their basic needs were not met. For example, near to where I live, there were two border collies who were being kept in a pool enclosure while the owners were away. They were bored and barked constantly. During a thunderstorm one of them got scared, jumped the fence and escaped. I’m aware the council was notified. Not long afterwards the dogs disappeared — hopefully to a new home with responsible owners. Keeping working dogs happy in an urban environment: l BEFORE you adopt, do your homework — can you cater to the breed’s specific needs? l You’ll need a fence that can’t be jumped, and a gate that a dog can’t learn to open! l Make sure your pooch is content while you’re out. There are toys and treats designed to keep dogs engaged. Arrange for family to visit or play dates with friends who have dogs. l Working dogs need two walks a day for at least 30 minutes or vary this with play time in an offleash park. These dogs are intelligent and need stimulation outside of your own place, even if you have a big backyard. l Get involved in dog sports or volunteering — activities that keep both you and your pet healthy and happy. THE remarkable
Renea
Kathleen Loxton sits down with the IKEA Queensland Market Manager, Renea Robson, to discuss her soaring success Kathleen: Can you tell our readers a little bit about your amazing career path? Renea: I joined IKEA a little over ten years ago as the commercial restaurant manager, coming from a career in hospitality. It wasn’t long before I realised I was amongst something amazing; a company that I could be truly proud to be a part of, with culture and values I was aligned to, in addition to an abundance of opportunity. … At each stage I set out to identify opportunities, set clear goals, inspire and empower others and deliver. This progression has led me to my current role… it’s a career journey I am privileged to have experienced and it continues to motivate me every day. K: What approach have you found that helps a team bond and work together? R: Clear goals. It sounds so simple and I believe it is. It's then really important to recognise results and celebrate success. K: Having women in leadership positions is so important (and IKEA is a strong advocate for equality in the workplace), what do you think are the most important attributes for a team leader to have? R: Curiosity to learn and seek opportunities, courage to have a go, determination to see it through, and a strong desire to grow people and the business. K: Having a great work ethic and being dedicated to self-improvement is clearly crucial. Where does your drive come from? R: My work ethic is without question from my parents, and you must be the example of what you expect from others. I feel that my dedication to self-improvement is a result of my curiosity. I ask a lot of questions and love to learn, self-improvement is then the outcome, and again, if you want to inspire others to grow and improve, then be that inspiration. K: Is there an average day in business for you? R: No such thing and it’s why I love what I do, no two days 27
are ever the same. A lot happens every day in an IKEA store and my time can be spent anywhere from the warehouse, to the shop floor or the boardroom. What comes my way may be rewarding or challenging, but I always view it through the eyes of opportunity, asking myself, what can be better tomorrow? K: Outside of the office, we hear you have a passion for flying! When did that start? R: It’s all Dad’s fault! My father is a pilot and I still remember the day so clearly when I first went flying with him in Darwin. He had done the pre-take-off checks, we lined up and then we were full throttle down the runway — the moment the plane lifted off I knew I wanted to do that one day. Not to mention the view and the ability to fly anywhere! A mile of road will take you a mile, a mile of runway will take you anywhere (someone else once said). I learnt to fly and I absolutely love it, now Dad and I are planning to fly around Australia later this year. K: What's one of the most memorable moments of your career success to date? R: I have had many great moments with IKEA, but the most memorable was the Logan store being recognised as one of the top five stores out of more than 400 worldwide! It was recognition on the global stage for everyone in the store, for what they do every day. The award considers not only business performance but also includes commitment to co-worker experience and development, as well as our contribution to the community and sustainability approach. It was made all the more special and amazing as Invgar [Kamprad], the founder of IKEA, was there that evening presenting and sharing why the acknowledgment was so important to him, and connecting it back to his vision for IKEA, "To create a better everyday life for the many people”. Hello fashionistas! Let's officially welcome the first month of autumn! It’s time to rework your wardrobe, and what’s even better? Our Queensland climate allows us to still wear summer, with a twist! First up, layers, under and over, are important pieces to start adding to your fashion arsenal, which will make your transition to a new season easier. Not to mention, you get more bang for your buck, with fashion you just can't say goodbye to (even for a season). For instance, take a strappy maxi, add a T-shirt, denim jacket and boots. Think instant revival and happiness. This season also calls for us to get fierce with matchymatchy ensembles and colour-clashing pieces. The secret? It’s easily done by pairing print on print, in the same colour family. Envisage spots and stripes, checks and spots, and leopard with vibrant colours, such as emerald, hot pink, or red — don’t be afraid to mix it up! Colour blocking is another option that works wonders, however, go for unique combinations — tan and pale blue, emerald and tan, red and pink. To finish, step outside the square and add a scarf or statement piece to create drama and the perfect sartorial finish. So, here’s what's trending for autumn 2020: • Lingerie (on the outside) • Faux fur (OTT) • 80s revival • Prints (particularly those on the wild side) • Colour • The staples: aviators, leather, shearling Create these looks easily, with the help of affordable fashion, and don't forget your local recycle stores for inspiration. To curate your own 'this goes with this' wardrobe, follow your bliss and your vibrant personality. March is the season of change, so regroup and explore this season’s fashion. Enjoy the ride! Stay stylish,

With bold accents of burnt orange and terracotta, we are saying goodbye to the cooler colours of grey and welcoming the warmer tones. Styling trends are continuing to follow an organic, natural feel with soft furnishings and texture again at the forefront. Bring the outside in and incorporate all the amazing new artificial greenery, from trees and potted plants, to arrangements with our stunning native Australian flowers as a statement piece. As all the new season decor pieces are arriving at Hemisphere, we are excited to pair these back with all our beautiful solid timber pieces to create a rich, warm and welcoming living space. GET IT I LIFESTYLE
SO, THE MILLION-DOLLAR QUESTION IS: HOW DO I MAKE MY INSPIRATION LAST?
This is your
sign
Anthony Noud, founder of Awakened Lifestyles, talks finding that ever-elusive inspiration nspiration, the flash of energy and positivity when we hear, watch or witness something that lights us up inside… It feels amazing, like a breath of vital energy into the lungs (which is the origin of the word). In a state of inspiration, you tell yourself all the things you’re going to do and how great they’re going to be. How many times have you planned a new habit, certain that you would follow through? You go to bed on a high feeling like things will be different this time. And then you wake up and it’s gone. It now feels like hard work — like ‘maybe we’ll start that tomorrow’. So, the million-dollar question is: how do I make my inspiration last? Well, I could BS you and tell you about vision boards and podcasts, and inspirational quotes you could post all over your mirror, but the truth is that inspiration was never meant to last. That’s why it’s called inspiration. If it were supposed to last long term, it would just be called normal. The better question is: how do I translate the things I get inspired about into action, even when the inspiration passes? In three steps, I’d say the following: Unless it’s enjoyable it will not last… This goes for a diet, exercise routine, job, relationship, hobby… anything! That doesn’t mean you’re going to enjoy mundane minutiae, like checking emails March 2020
each day or reheating salmon and greens when the office is eating cake. But overall, your endeavour should be more enjoyable than it is painful. That is, the routine should bring you more joy than struggle. Remember the future… Ultimately, the only thing you actually want as a result of being inspired is to have a feeling… Lose weight? Save money? Achieve another goal? It’s not the kilograms lost, or the dollars saved that we want, it’s the way they will make us feel once achieved. Latest quantum science suggests that the way we feel in a given moment actually influences the outcomes of our actions. By feeling the result of your endeavours each day, you are not only more likely to achieve the goal but will experience more satisfaction and build up the reward centre in your brain connected to your actions. This is where you get to enjoy both the journey and the destination. Prime your internal and external environments for inspiration… We become our thoughts. We also become a product of the people, places and things we spend most of our time with. Want more inspiration? l Cultivate it with thoughts and actions. l Spend time with people who inspire you. l Visit places that bring you joy and wonder. l Surround yourself with things that add genuine value to your life. 36
Apply these pointers and you are sure to experience more inspiration than ever. But remember, the bulk of your life will be spent in-between moments of inspiration. Accept this and act on your dreams anyway.
Awakened Lifestyles We work with highfunctioning humans who are stuck in their head and chasing external success yet feel empty inside, helping them to face their inner fears and become happy, and content, every single day. For more, follow Anthony on Instagram, @anthonyinnerwork.
Get moving this March with Jack Smith from Vision Gold Coast Personal Training elcome to March. If you are still on track for your New Year’s fitness resolution, then congratulations, as research shows more than half of the population doesn’t stick to their goal past February! To help you keep on track (or get back on track) here’s a few ideas to help inspire you… 1. Find your why The saying “those with a big enough why will overcome any how” rings true here. Motivation will come and go, so a clear understanding of exactly why you want your result will help you to maintain the discipline of consistency. Whether you want to reduce your blood pressure to live longer, get fit enough to see the sights on an overseas holiday, or improve your physique and self-confidence, what makes you get out of bed in the morning needs to be compelling enough to make long-term change. There is no right or wrong answer, only what truly drives you to keep moving forward. 2. Track your progression You need to find as many ways as possible to measure your progress (it’s not just the number on the scales!), then celebrate the small steps forward. You can record the amount of weight lifted on a certain exercise, the distance ran in a session or a week, the amount of water drank in a day, the hours of sleep each night or even just the number of steps you take each day. Seeing yourself getting better each session, day, week, will keep you moving forward. A simple solution could be wearing a tracker, such as a Garmin smartwatch or Fitbit, which can record a multitude of statistics and give you live feedback on your health. 3. Follow the plan Although this may not sound exciting and fun, simply sticking to the plan you have over a long period of time will get great results. Often, we look for short term or instant gratification, when we haven’t actually given the plan we have created enough of an opportunity to get a result. Not every workout may be exciting, fresh and new, but results come from an accumulation of small marginal measured gains. 4. Have a refresh Every now and again it’s healthy to change it up and do something completely different. If it’s not contradictory or injury-causing, then trying something brand new and fun can be a positive. 5. Recovery is key Planning for rest and recovery is actually majorly beneficial to keeping motivated, progressing and remaining injury free. Not every session should ‘smash’ us, in fact most sessions should be quite controlled and slightly progressed from the previous. If we don’t plan our recovery, there’s a higher chance we won’t recover as well, and either get injured or begin to plateau, both of which will cause an instant drop in your motivation to train.
THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWER, ONLY WHAT TRULY DRIVES YOU.
You see time away from family, we see a better you for them.

The dreaded
“M”
Coomera-based Jessie Walter is a dietician — here she sheds light on menopause, and healthy habits we should implement now
Menopause is the topic that many women dread as they head towards their late 30s and into their 40s but it’s something that none of us can avoid.
never had a weight problem until I turned 40”. “The weight just doesn’t come off like it used to”.Sound familiar? Menopause is the topic that many women dread as they head towards their late 30s and into their 40s but it’s something that none of us can avoid. Perimenopause will generally start in our 40s but it can begin as early as our mid-30s, bringing along with it many unwanted changes. These changes can include weight gain, loss of lean body mass (muscle), bone health concerns as well as an increased chronic disease risk. The good news is that there are lifestyle and nutrition changes that can be made to reduce the risk of these unwanted changes, and the earlier these are made, the better.
Body composition One of the biggest challenges midlife women face is unwanted weight gain. This weight gain is a combination of age-related weight increases, as well as hormonal changes associated with menopause. Women will gain an average of 0.5kg per year between age 45-55 and a total of 2.3kg during menopause. Due to hormonal changes, there is an increase in body fat, particularly visceral fat (central) which surrounds our vital organs within the abdomen. Along with this, women over the age of 40 begin to lose about 1% of their lean body mass (muscle) per year, especially if they are inactive. March 2020
Chronic disease risk During menopause, women are at a higher risk of developing chronic conditions including diabetes, coronary heart disease and hypertension. The combination of hormonal and physiological changes, as well as increased central body fat are to blame for this increased risk.
Bone health
The increased risk of bone loss begins before menopause, with the critical window for bone loss occurring one to two years before a woman’s last period and the five years following this. It is extremely important to enter menopause with enough bone density as women can lose up to 20% bone density during the menopausal transition.
Hot flashes and sleep disturbances
During menopause you may experience a range of symptoms including hot flashes or night sweats, which can interrupt sleep. Loss of sleep can impact appetite regulation by increasing levels of our hunger hormone and decreasing levels of our satiety (fullness) hormone, which can increase risk of weight gain.
What can you do?
There are weapons you can use to prevent unwanted weight gain, increased chronic disease risk, decreasing bone health and menopause symptoms including following a healthy diet and regular exercise. 38
We need to avoid STD (sitting-to-death disease) and make sure we continue to exercise. The recommendation during menopause jumps from 30 to 60 minutes per day of moderate intensity exercise, with at least two weight trainings per week. This helps improve chronic disease risk, weight gain, muscle loss and bone density. Nutrition recommendations are to follow a plant-based, Mediterranean style of eating and consume regular amounts of protein to maintain lean muscle mass. Protein should be evenly spread over the day, aiming for about 25-30g at each time, and always having protein within 30 to 60 minutes after exercising to build muscle. Calcium is critical for bone health, but you should always choose food sources before supplements. Other lifestyle considerations include reducing alcohol intake, stopping smoking and maintaining adequate vitamin D levels. There are a few considerations to reduce your sleep disturbances – refrain from drinking caffeinated beverages four to six hours prior to bed and alcohol within three hours of bed; practice a regular sleep routine; eat a light evening meal; exercise earlier in the day or at least three hours before bed; and go to bed only when you are tired. Menopause brings with it many changes, but these don’t have to be feared. You can promote your health during menopause by eating well and exercising. And always seek advice if you have any concerns.

FIVE WAYS
PAIN NATURALLY
TO RELIEVE
Holly Bartter encourages us to try a few things first, before reaching for the pain meds ches and pains can present themselves at the most inconvenient times, and often we don’t know the exact cause. For those times when you don’t want to reach for the painkillers straight away (especially if you’re experiencing a one-off or generalised feeling of discomfort), here are some straightforward, natural ways to relieve pain. Often one or a combination of the following methods can soothe your symptoms enough that you might not need anything more potent, or get you through those final few tasks of the day. Dose up on H2O It’s very easy to forget to properly hydrate throughout the day — even if we compensate with some larger glasses of
water in the morning or evenings. Especially for dull headaches or muscle soreness, dehydration is a common factor. Rebalance your fluid and electrolytes by sipping water across the hours, and bolster this with waterrich foods like watermelon or cucumber. Go for iced or warm water as you prefer and avoid caffeinated drinks as these (although blended with water) can slow the relief. Breathe deep If you’re feeling stressed from pain, you might unwittingly breathe more quickly and shallowly. With this, your muscles will tighten, and heart rate and blood pressure will rise. Find a quiet place to take some deep breaths. Concentrate on long and consistent breaths — and evaluate your pain after 5 - 10 minutes. Stretch it out Sometimes muscular pain appears even without a workout or strenuous physical day. For corporates with hectic schedules,

you may be tensing your muscles (especially those around your neck and shoulders), causing strains and pains that will manifest later in the day or evening when you’re trying to sleep. Go for gentle, comfortable stretches of your neck side-to-side and up and down, and gently extend your arms and raise your shoulders — no sudden movements or over-extension — it’s all about getting gentle blood flow going and soothing any knots or tension that may have formed across the day. Vitamin check Are you in need of a bit of a vitamin boost? There are a few vitamins that are important for helping the body with inflammation and natural pain relief. For example, Vitamin D is essential for bone health, Vitamin C for protecting cells from damaging free radicals and managing inflammation, and Vitamin E helps to repair tissue. Additionally, Vitamins B12 and B3 support a healthy nervous system. Seek advice from your local pharmacist or a medical professional for more details. Catch some Zs Sleep is a natural healer, and it’s during real rest that our body can go to work repairing and renewing our cells. While it can be difficult to fall asleep when you’re in pain, sleep is very important, so aim to get at least 7 or 8 hours of solid sleep that evening, aiming for 1 to 2 of those hours at least to fall before midnight. Unwind well before you plan to sleep, and ensure you have pillows, bedding, lighting and other comforts that will facilitate your best and most relieving sleep.

Canopy Glider -Rainforest
ou’ll be on your way up. You’ll be seeing great sights. You’ll join the high-fliers who soar to high heights”. These famous words by popular children’s author Dr Seuss are the ones that spring to mind as I float across the Cairns sky in a glass-bottom gondola, surrounded by lush green rainforest and dark mist-inducing skies. I’ve just boarded my Diamond View cabin on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, which I’m told will make two stops — Red Peak Rainforest and Barron Falls — as it traverses the 7.5-kilometre line up to Kuranda Village. It’s a gusty day and rain is threatening which sees me spend the first few minutes of what will be a 90-minute ride wiping down sweaty palms. I’m already anticipating the bumps I’ll experience across each of the 32 towers before I even get going. With my feet firmly planted on the glassbottom floor (made from 28mm thick triple layered tempered glass), I settle in and admire the beauty of the magnificent Wet Tropics Rainforest below — the tropical rainforests of the Wet Tropics are the oldest continuously surviving rainforest on Earth and are believed to be more than 100 million years old. With 114 gondolas in operation (11 of these Diamond View and there’s a 360-degree open canopy glider available too) Skyrail can accommodate up to 700 passengers at any one time and operates at 18km/hour. “What an incredible way to see Cairns,” a British couple visiting Australia for the first time say.“We’ve been to the Reef, now it’s time for the rainforest, what an amazing experience this is.” Ten minutes after I set off the gondola pulls into the first station, Red Peaks Rainforest, which is 545 metres above sea-level. It’s time to get off and take a wander through the glistening green bushland. This can be done with a guide or on your own, but if there’s one thing I do suggest it is to ensure you follow the 175m-long boardwalk and immerse yourself in nature. The climbing ferns, beautiful butterflies, scenic lookout and the gigantic strangler figs are sights to behold, and interestingly enough, many of the ancient plants
in this rainforest existed when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. After a leisurely half hour stroll and with a Diamond View cabin picking up at the station every seven minutes, my heart begins to speed up again as I look at the incline I’m about to take towards Barron Falls, the next stop. It’s a steep, bumpy start and the wind isn’t letting up, but the swoosh of the branches below and the squawking of the birds make for a nature-inspired backing track, complementing the birds-eye vistas I’m being afforded. As I continue to sail over this World Heritage Listed landscape — one that’s older than even the Amazon — Barron Falls comes into view on my left. As good as the dramatic falls are to see from the air, the thundering gush of the water spilling into the gorge below is best experienced from the Edge Lookout. Skyrail General Manager Richard BermanHardman was right when he said:“Our guests ... couldn't get any closer than the vantage point at the new Edge Lookout. The thunderous sound and the spray from the waterfall is an aweinspiring experience.” Best seen between December and May, Barron Falls is known as Din Din to the Djabuganydji people. It is a sacred place that has been an important part of their storytelling for thousands of years. The station here is also home to the stateof-the-art Rainforest Interpretation Centre that houses a visual and interactive presentation of the rainforest environment. It’s only a few more minutes onto Kuranda station where I will disembark and wander the quaint mountain village renowned for its markets, cafes, restaurants and pubs, bird and butterfly parks, and Kuranda Scenic Railway. As my journey comes to an end Dr. Seuss pays another visit:“Oh the things you can find if you don’t stay behind.” How right he is, if you’re in Cairns it’s high time for a ride on Skyrail! Tickets for the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway (skyrail.com.au), which is 15 minutes from the Cairns city centre, cost $55 for adults and $27.50 for children one way. Family passes cost $137.50. 41

MINTED FETA SALAD WITH NECTARINES AND RASPBERRIES with Truffles This is a wonderfully vibrant summer salad. It’s crucial that the nectarines are ripe and juicy, that you use a good feta (preferably made from sheep’s milk), and that you use the best olive oil you can find!
INGREDIENTS 500g feta cheese Handful fresh mint leaves 1tsp coarsely ground black pepper 1 tsp dried oregano 2 ripe and juicy nectarines 1 small punnet of raspberries 100g ripe, black olives, with stones. Extra virgin olive oil Crusty bread to serve
David Wilshin has worked as a chef in the UK, Spain and the Caribbean. He has been general manager of the Cambridge Cheese Company since 2002, sourcing and selling fine, artisan foods from around Europe and the world. He lives in Ely, Cambridgeshire, with his wife, two daughters, Jack Russell terrier and chickens.
DIRECTIONS With your fingers, break up the feta into a bowl, then roughly tear the mint and mix it in, along with the oregano and the black pepper. Place the mix on a nice serving platter or bowl. Slice the nectarines into wedges and arrange them on top of the feta, along with the raspberries and olives. Finish with a great big glug of olive oil and serve with crusty bread.

VERY TOMATOEY AND GARLICKY CHICKEN with Parmesan Gratin This amazing dish shows that recipes don't have to be complicated to be absolutely delicious! All that's needed here is good quality ingredients and a bit of care. You want to really cook this slow and long until you are left with a very thick, rich tomato sauce.
INGREDIENTS 8-12 free-range chicken thighs 3 tins of San Marzano or best quality chopped tomatoes 8 garlic cloves, chopped 2 quarters of a fresh lemon 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper 1kg King Edward potatoes, peeled and sliced very thinly — about 3-4mm 100g freshly grated Parmesan cheese 2 cloves of garlic, crushed 2 bay leaves 1 sprig of rosemary 300ml double cream 300ml full fat milk
DIRECTIONS Heat the olive oil in a large flat pan. Season the chicken thighs with salt and pepper and sizzle at a good heat until both sides are well browned. Add the tomatoes, garlic and lemon, turn down the heat and bring to a gentle bubble. Season well with salt and pepper. Simmer slowly, uncovered, for about 1 1/2 hours or until almost all the liquid has gone. This needs to be a slow process so be patient and keep the heat nice and low. Stir it regularly, and make sure that the sauce doesn’t stick and burn. Once the chicken is underway, pour the milk and cream into a large pan and stir well. Add the garlic, bay leaves, rosemary and potatoes. Bring to a gentle boil and simmer for 4-5 minutes. Butter an ovenproof dish and transfer half the contents of your pan, followed by half the Parmesan, then the other half and sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top. Heat the oven to 200 degrees. Cover your dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove from the oven and with a dinner knife, check the potatoes are cooked and soft. If they’re done, then remove the foil and bake for a further 10 minutes or so, until the top browns up nicely.

PULLED JERK PORK WITH CARIBBEAN MANGO and Papaya Salsa I was lucky enough to work in the British Virgin Islands for a couple of years, and fell in love with all the wonderful, vibrant cuisine the Caribbean has to offer. This recipe is a great combination of fierce, fruity scotch bonnet peppers, melt in the mouth pork and a bright, fresh, tropical salsa, all served in a soft white bun!
INGREDIENTS Pork 1 bunch spring onions 6 big cloves of garlic 2 scotch bonnet chillies 1 heaped tbsp. fresh thyme leaves 1 tsp ground allspice 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground cloves Juice of 1 orange 75ml white wine vinegar 1 tsp salt 2 tbsp dark muscovado sugar 2kg bone-in shoulder of pork Vegetable oil Salsa 1 large ripe mango, peeled and finely diced 1 ripe papaya, peeled, seeded and finely diced Juice of 1 lime 1 small red onion, chopped very finely 1 tbsp honey 2 mild red chillies, seeds removed and finely chopped Handful fresh coriander, roughly chopped 8 soft white burger rolls
DIRECTIONS Roughly chop, then blend all of the jerk marinade ingredients together in a food processor, then rub into your pork joint. Place in a suitable dish and marinate overnight in the fridge. Preheat a heavy casserole in a hot oven with a couple of glugs of vegetable oil. Take the joint out of its marinating dish, (reserving any juices), pop it into the casserole and cook uncovered, for about 45 minutes, turning halfway, so the outside crusts up a bit. Take the casserole out the oven and turn the oven down to 140 degrees. Pour any marinating juices in and half a cup of water, put the lid on and cook for 6 hours. When it's done, pull the meat from the bone using a combination of tongs, forks and a knife — it should come apart really easily. Put the meat back in the casserole and mix well with any cooking juices. Pop it back in the oven with the lid on and turn the oven down as low as it will go. Prepare the salsa by tossing all the ingredients together in a bowl and serve in your buns.

T-BONES WITH PUNGENT SUMMER TOMATOES and Crispy Roasties This is one of my absolute favourite meals in the world. It is very simple, so best ingredients are essential, especially the tomatoes — in fact, this recipe is almost the sole reason I obsessively grow tomatoes every year! If you don't grow your own, then smell before you buy — the most pungent smelling will be the best tasting! Now, T-bone steaks are a huge indulgence with a fillet on one side of the bone and sirloin on the other, so you can of course substitute with a different cut… but nothing says STEAK like a T-bone.
INGREDIENTS 4 T-bone steaks 750g Maris Piper potatoes 2 tbsp goose fat 750g pungent smelling fresh tomatoes, cut into decent sized pieces
6 garlic cloves smashed with the flat of a big knife 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Salt and coarsely ground black pepper
DIRECTIONS
Heat the goose fat in a roasting tray in the oven at 200 degrees. Parboil the potatoes for 5-10 minutes, so they get soft around the edges but are still firm in the middle. Drain, add plenty of salt, put the lid back on and give them a good shake so they get a bit "bashed up". Put the roasting tray on the hob on high, so the oil stays really hot and carefully add the potatoes. Sizzle them for 4-5 minutes, turning carefully as you go, so they start to crisp up, then put them in the oven for about 30 minutes, or until done. When the potatoes are in the oven, mix the tomatoes with the garlic, a sprinkling of salt and plenty of pepper. Cover, and set aside in a cool place, stirring occasionally to get the juices flowing. Take your steaks out of the fridge and let them sit for 20 minutes or so, so they can come up to room temperature. Rub them in olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Sear on a very hot griddle or pan. 6 minutes on one side, 3 on the other will give you a medium rare steak. Remove from the heat. Wrap each steak in foil and leave to rest for 5-10 minutes, by which time the potatoes should be done. Serve with the potatoes on the side and the tomatoes spooned on top of the steak along with any precious juices!

GET IT I MONEY
Often it is not the amount of money one earns that dictates the ability to save, it is the ability to say no to the daily temptations.
INSPIRING
WEALTH Les McGuire ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial, takes a look at our relationship with debt What inspires you? Is it shopping, getting a new car, going on holidays, eating out? Well, to make these things happen, it takes money. So, let’s take our inspiration for saving money to be our primary goal, and enjoy the amazing treats that come with it. I have countless conversations with clients about saving money, and often it is not the amount of money one earns that dictates the ability to save, it is the ability to say no to the daily temptations. I often find the more money we earn, the more we spend, whereas if we set ourselves goals, as small as they might be to start, we can achieve big things. Let’s put one to the test. That holiday you have March 2020
always dreamed of, which all of your friends seem to go on, but you never get to go. Sound familiar? Well let’s change it and plan for the adventure of a lifetime. I dare you to do what for most people is a forbidden practice: track your expenditure. There are many great apps available; two good ones that come to mind are, MoneyBrilliant and Pocketbook. These apps come with a free account, which allows you to connect your credit cards, loans, superannuation and investment accounts. On top of that, you can use the app to create a budget, get bill notifications, categorise expenses, calculate your net worth, and generate spending reports. 46
If you want to put in a plan to save, in this case for the holiday, this is a powerful way to start that journey. By monitoring your expenditure, there are things you will find make up part of your daily routine, that could become more of a treat. If you cut something out, reward yourself by putting the money away towards the real inspiration you want — that holiday. The money you put away needs to be off-limits, but how do we achieve this new inspiration to invest right? Money in the bank is often too easy to access and drives wrong decisions. Let’s set up the holiday investment fund and invest in a low-cost investment like a managed fund, which will provide benefits such as potential franking credits, a good yield, and ideally strong growth. If each week we put the money into the new investment fund we saved from the indulgences we forfeited, we will start to build a good holiday treasure chest. The power behind this style of strategy is the psychological component of not wanting to sell the investments and deplete the account. The reason for this, is the underlying investment will fluctuate in value. It’s important to remember, though, that each regular contribution made into the fund will help it grow over time, and this saving strategy can become addictive. Set yourself the end goal that you want to reach, for the holiday fund, and then redeeming it will be easier, plus you will enjoy the holiday experience knowing that you earned and deserved it. Some of the best ways to save money over time are through the use of managed funds, direct shares, ETF’s, and some of these investments can be done directly; however, I recommend you see a financial planning professional to help you on this journey. This is because of the complexity of choosing the right assets to help you achieve the goal, knowing how much money you can afford to invest and the best way to invest it. With the right planning and strategy, many people achieve far better outcomes. As always keep smiling and if you have any questions send them to les@futureproof.com.au
Managing finances after divorce
Expert advice from Luke Brandon, Queensland Law Society accredited family law specialist
ne of the most difficult things to manage following separation or divorce is finances. A double income household becomes one sustained by only you. Many of my clients say that they would have separated years ago but couldn’t afford to. It is a real and very stressful issue. My tips for those who have separated or are contemplating separation: Know your income and its sources Check the Commonwealth government website or make an appointment at Centrelink to find out if your new circumstances mean you’re entitled to financial support, including government assistance or child support. On the Child Support Agency website, there is a useful online estimator that will give you an idea of where you stand. The other thing to remember is that your spouse’s obligation to remit child support only commences from the date you register with the Child Support Agency. When you register, you will be assigned a case officer who can assist with specific queries. You may also be entitled to spousal maintenance. The test for this will determine that you are unable to meet your own reasonable needs, and that your spouse, after they have met their child support obligations and their own needs, has surplus income. If your spouse refuses to voluntarily remit spousal maintenance, then you will need to file a court application.
There really is no substitute for specialist family law advice when it comes to property settlement. Understand your expenses Do you know what it costs to run your household each week? If your partner has managed the finances, you may need to take stock. There are excellent online budget tools that can help you to tally running costs. These will include your fixed expenses like electricity or broadband, and discretionary spending that can be analysed on your bank statements (start by looking at spending over the past three months). Link with an advisor If your confidence is lacking in this area, seek advice from a financial advisor. Many offer a fixed service price for clients going through separation or divorce, and they can advise on practicalities that help you to manage your money and reach financial goals. Consider retraining or reskilling Separation and divorce can be daunting, but can be empowering too. If you have been out of the workforce for several years, you might take this opportunity to retrain or upskill in an area

you enjoy or have experience in. Visit your local university, TAFE or RTO (vocational education and training) for details on available courses. There are online options too, or talk to recruitment agencies. Seek advice on how to refresh your CV, and what grants are available should you, for example, wish to start your own business. From a family law perspective, the courts may allow you a period to get back into the workforce. If your spouse has the capacity to do so, they may be asked to financially support you while you undertake the necessary study or retraining. Property settlement If you and your spouse have assets and superannuation, you will need advice from a good family lawyer about your rights and entitlements. Failing to properly pursue this is only going to place you (and your children if you have any) under immense financial and emotional pressure. There is no such thing as equality being a starting point or a party getting 70% because they have the kids. There are no fixed outcomes. Quite often, the percentage division is the least controversial issue. The real work involves investigating the true financial situation for both parties, including having to discover hidden assets. There really is no substitute for specialist family law advice when it comes to property settlement. Getting the right advice can save you thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars, on tax and duties and other unexpected expenses. March 2020

Having huge energy coming at you from Capricorn is draining, its concentration is affecting your home and family. This month’s bonus is Venus in Taurus, offering strength, grace and rejuvenation. Mars, in a positive aspect to Venus, brings drive and positive momentum. This is supportive for your family/home quests.
Pisces February 19 – March 20
The sun conjoining with Neptune, whose qualities include dissolving limits and boundaries. 9 March may offer up some limitations that need addressing around self and ego. A nifty little aspect the next day from Jupiter, may give the birds eye view of it, as Mars follows, giving strong momentum and call follow through. Mid-month offers the opportunity.
Aries March 20 – April 19
Mars, your ruler, moving through your career and reputation house puts you firmly in view. In Capricorn, Mars is supported and positively put to use. This helps you put your best foot forward all month. The Mercury retrograde will be stirring your deeper hidden waters.
Taurus April 20 – May 21
Venus returning to Taurus is a blessing. Renewal and strengthening of bonds around relationships and creative pleasures is instinctive, once Venus passes the innovative and progressive Uranus. Inspiration is offered by Uranus, aided by Mars. Venus isn’t having the easiest of times in 2020, March is the perfect time to strengthen her resolve.
Gemini May 21 – June 21
Your ruler, Mercury, comes out of a confusing Mercury retrograde in Pisces. Mercury in Pisces is a double whammy of confusion and miscommunication. This will have a positive impact on your career or reputation, as the previous three weeks may have felt like chaos a plenty. Late April there’ll be strong desires to purge and fuel new ambitions.
Cancer
June 21 – July 22
Mars putting an extraordinary amount of pressure and activity in your opposite sign, is uncomfortable, but late March promises relief. Saturn shifts into Aquarius, which lightens the load, especially for those born in the last few days of Cancer. Nodes shifting take the pressure off after a tricky 18 Months.
Leo July 22 – August 23
Late March introduces the tone of the next three and a half years. Saturn in opposition to your sign might introduce the feeling of constraint, with strong desires of forward planning. It’s a new phase. Late March is when you get the first whiff of it. When the sun hits Aries late November, this offers a great boost, giving great strength and durability.
Virgo August 23 - September 22
Your ruler, Mercury, throws around many mixed signals due to its retrogradation in Pisces. By 22 March onwards, clarity and the ability to move forward with clearer communication begins. Any doubts or confusion around where people stand clears up by the end of the month.
Scorpio October 23 – November 22
Your ruler, in an excellent condition, sees day to day life, active, interesting and dynamic. Mars gives positive influence as you go about your day to day. It supports the daily hustle. Venus in your house of relationships offers great opportunity for supportive and flourishing relationships. With Uranus also involved, expect the unexpected.
Sagittarius November 22 – December 22
Jupiter in Capricorn has been the antithesis of its journey through your sign last year. Conservatism and austerity has taken up where optimism and grown was dominant. Adjusting your settings to this isn’t a bad idea since Jupiter is co-sharing space with some very dominant bed fellows. Never has pulling back and conserving been in your best interests, with Mars stirring your money sector.
Capricorn December 22 – January 20
Mars in Capricorn all month is amplifying, a calling to action and igniting of things triggered in January. Mars in Capricorn is where strength and preparation meet. The key is to harness this energy, not let it overwhelm. Jupiter and Pluto, drawing closer to conjunction for the first time in 12 years, could mark the beginning of big things for 2020.
Aquarius January 21 – February 19
23 March sees Saturn entering Aquarius for the first time since 1993. March begins the introduction phase of what the next three years has on offer. Saturn is your traditional ruler, so its strong and dignified. What you may not be expecting, is what it brings to the table. Treat March as a transition month.
