GET IT I EDITOR LETTER

from the editor LAUREN PARIS
Holy wow! It’s Autumn! While we’re still lucky enough to be basking in the sun here on the Gold Coast, we’ve taken a dive into the Gold Coast swimwear scene this month, interviewing a handful of local swimwear designers. If you didn’t already know, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well on the Gold Coast. Our battle of the bikini babes feature demonstrates that with vision, creativity and hard work, anything is possible. You also have a chance to win a swimsuit from each of the swimwear designers featured. We have giveaways galore for you this month. Turn to page 11 for your chance to win the ultimate drive, dine and fly experience! As it’s our DIY issue – it’s time to get your hands dirty. We’ve chatted to two fabulous female tradies – a plumber and a mechanic – to get the low down on how to fix a leaking tap and how to change a tyre. Another concerning issue for Gold Coasters continues to be the topic of domestic violence. This issue, we’ve provided the important information about how you can help and GET help. Also this issue, with so many of us living our lives through social media these days, Get it has taken a look at whether we’re revealing too much online. We look at the possible dangers surrounding a simple desk shot, the innocent first day of school photo, or snapshot of your boarding pass. Also be sure to check out our fab recipes and horoscopes, and the social pages to see if you were snapped whilst out and about recently. At the recent launch of Gold Coast Tourism’s multi-million dollar destination brand platform, We Are Gold Coast, it was wonderful to see such an enthusiastic group of people who are all so passionate about the place we’re so fortunate to call home. Marking a decidedly new direction for Gold Coast Tourism, We Are Gold Coast sees the Coast’s infectious energy shared with the world through the eyes of locals. “Through two years of research and consultation, we’ve discovered that what distinguishes the Gold Coast in an everincreasing world of choice for travellers is not our beaches or theme parks; instead, it’s the unmistakable life affirming energy that lives here. It is an energy that ignites, inspires, reconnects and makes you feel alive,” says Chief Marketing Officer of Gold Coast Tourism, Jan Hutton. So true. Love this city, how about you? Have a great month!

If you’ve not stuck a cool pack down your bra while suffering through 40 degree heat have you ever really suffered at all, asks Get it contributor Anna Davies ummer is apparently over. Well at least that’s what Google tells me. The weather forecast, my smudging mascara and the branding iron that is the seatbelt of my car all beg to differ – but I’m no meteorologist. The past few months have felt like a steaming hot eternity, but I have learnt a thing or two about how to survive when trapped in a furnace. Now that summer has officially ‘ended’ I can’t think of a better time to share my top tips for surviving the heat…

BRING BACK THE ICE-BUCKET CHALLENGE Ah yes, let’s take a walk down memory lane back to 2014 when we were all pouring ice-cold water on each other Flashdance style in the name of ALS research. While in some parts of the world this was a daring sacrifice, in Australia it was more of a welcome relief. As I cook away in the fiery hellhole that is 2017, my mind often wanders back to this simpler time. A time when you could ask someone to pour ice water on you without appearing to be odd. If only I could turn back time, if only I could find a way…I feel you Cher.

PURPOSEFULLY BURY YOURSELF IN THE SAND. Many creatures bury themselves a safe place to hibernate in during the winter months, and this really isn’t that much different. Apart from the fact that you’re a human, and it’s summer and everyone at the beach is staring at you.
your fir purchase
Seriously though, have you ever gone to the beach on a hot day and submerged your hand into the cool sand? I can tell you it is nothing short of pure bliss. This got me thinking; why not just submerge my entire body into a sandy cocoon? Not only will I be cool, but I also get to save money on sun cream and hide the fact that I never quite managed to achieve my ‘summer body’. It’s a truly flawless tactic. Some of you might scoff at these tips while you sit in your airconditioned palace sucking on a Zooper Dooper – but when the air con fails and the supermarket sells out of icy treats you will be thanking me (maybe). 9

GET IT I BUSINESS
From light bulb moment to
big business
Been sitting on a great idea for far too long? This is the month to turn that small idea into your dream business! any, many years ago – 2003 to be exact – a pimplyfaced Harvard student was dumped by his girlfriend, got drunk, had an idea and sat down at his computer. Fourteen years - and many college students, boozy nights, hacking scandals, criminal investigations, and farm animals later – Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook is worth $350 billion. If that doesn’t inspire you to turn your light bulb idea into a thriving business, then I don’t know what will! But where do I even start I hear you ask? Here are a few simple steps to turn your business idea into a reality. Do your research and seek advice Like any good girl scout, you should always be prepared! Take time to do your research; find out more about the market and who your potential competitors are. You should also use this initial stage to build your own personal board of advisors, from business mentors to accountants, solicitors and insurers. Learn from those who have come before you to minimise risk and get a great kick start on your business dream. March 2017
Write your business plan Your business plan is the blueprint to turning your dream into a reality and is a huge asset when applying for finance to start your business. Your business plan should include details such as your current situation, a business profile, market analysis, marketing plan, legal and risk management, and a finance plan. Remember, your business plan should be a constant work in progress – as your ideas develop and your business grows, keep reviewing and amending it. It will act as an operating guide for your business and help you to mitigate risks and identify new opportunities. Get your finances sorted Firstly, you need to consider your financial model to ensure your business is viable. You need to consider all costs including start up costs, manufacturing, marketing and distribution costs as well as ongoing overheads. It is important to be realistic and build in a contingency amount in case of unexpected costs. Secondly, you need to decide on your source of capital to get your business off the ground. Seek advice from your 10
accountant or business advisor to make sure you choose the most viable option. Get digital It’s time to get online! Your digital platforms will be your biggest marketing tool and help to establish your brand, create credibility for your business and help reach your target market. The key to getting the most of these platforms is to keep them up to date and post relevant and engaging content. Make sure that your contact details are easily found, as well as information about your products, opening hours etc. If tackling all this yourself is a bit daunting, get in touch with a digital marketing company who can help you get set up and make sure your content is relevant. Get going Okay, now it’s time to say a prayer and get out there. Remember, this is a learning process and you’re going to fall flat on your face at least once. Don’t be afraid to take risks; they will either pay off or you’ll learn a valuable lesson. Most importantly, remember that building an empire takes time and patience. It’s true what they say: Rome wasn’t built in a day.

GET IT I GENERAL STORY
Domestic violence How to help and get help
It is an appalling reality that there are countless victims of domestic violence among us, and they stretch across the whole community. In the final instalment of Get it’s three-part series highlighting domestic violence, we hear from a Police spokesperson and a former victim about how you can help yourself or help others
GET HELP! ne in four Australian women has experienced physical or sexual violence by a partner and, on average, at least one woman a week is killed by a partner or former partner in Australia. With recent tragedies occurring in our region, we know all too well the devastating impact that domestic violence has. Domestic violence comes in many forms, particularly verbal abuse, physical abuse, and emotional abuse. It is crucial that victims are able to reach out, get help and feel safe again. Quite often, victims of domestic violence are hesitant to contact the police as they fear repercussion from the perpetrator and are unsure of exactly what the police will – and can – do. A Queensland Police Service (QPS) spokesperson told Get it “the Queensland Police Service (QPS) recognises the seriousness of domestic and family violence and is working together with partner agencies to break the cycle, change cultural attitudes, support victims and hold perpetrators to account”. So what can the police do? Any time the police are called to a domestic violence incident, their first priority will always be the safety of all parties involved. If the violence is occurring at the time the police officers arrive, they will enter the property and ensure the situation is subdued. The parties involved may be separated so that the police can speak to each privately and gain a full understanding of the situation. According to the Queensland Police website (police.qld.gov.au), at the conclusion of the investigation, should a police officer reasonably believe that domestic violence has been committed, there are a number of avenues for police to seek protection for those affected by domestic violence. These include making an March 2017
application for a protection order, issuing a police protection notice (which includes an application for a protection order) or applying to a magistrate for a temporary protection order. If the police believe that there is a chance of further violence occurring, they can take the respondent into custody for up to 4 hours. In the case that the respondent is heavily intoxicated, this can be extended up to 8 hours, to ensure the safety of the victim. If there are children involved, and the police fear they may be at risk, they will complete a report for QPS Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) officer or the Child Protection Investigation Unit (CPIU). Protection Orders According to the Domestic Violence Prevention Centre Gold Coast Inc (DVPC) if you are experiencing domestic and family violence you can apply for a protection order yourself or get a police officer, solicitor or authorised person (friend, relative, community/welfare worker) to apply for you. You can also get a guardian or administrator to apply or a person who is acting under an enduring power of attorney. Often, victims of domestic violence will refrain from taking out a protection order, fearing that their partner will receive a criminal record or be imprisoned when the order is issued, however this is not the case. If the perpetrator contravenes an order once they are made aware of it, then they may be arrested and charged. “Domestic and family violence is not just a police matter, it is a community issue and after the release of the [Not Now, Not Ever: Putting an end to domestic and family violence in Queensland report in 2015] the determination by the community to put an end to domestic and family violence has never been stronger,” the QPS spokesperson said. 12

OBSTACLES t is important to remember that domestic abuse is a very real and prevalent issue and everyone can do their part to ensure family and friends are safe and living in risk-free environments. Tala Scott, a domestic violence survivor, suffered in a violent relationship for more than 25 years until she found the courage to leave. She has now co-founded Evolve Today to help women escape similar situations and has provided advice on how to spot a friend in trouble and help them out of a domestic violence situation. Tala offers these tips: How to spot a friend in trouble: Normally someone suffering from an abusive relationship may become more withdrawn than usual. They will distance themselves from family and friends. Their demeanour and self-confidence may have diminished. When they are around their abusive partner, they can be submissive in an attempt to avoid any arguments or tension that usually escalates once they are alone. If you noticed your friend apologising to their partner a lot, take note. If your friend has unexplained bruises or continually attempts to hide the bruising, it is worth enquiring about and keeping an eye on them. How to help a friend out of a domestic violence situation: Talk to the person gently, and in a safe environment. The way that you approach a potential victim of domestic violence is essential. You may have to try talking to them a few times, as the topic can be very confronting for them. It helps to use words that are direct, but use them in a manner which is calm and composed. If you’re not sure what to say, it’s always best to use simple questions such as ‘does your partner blame you
for her/his bad moods?’ Or ‘do you feel like you’re always walking on eggshells?’ Don’t judge When discussing such a sensitive topic it’s important to remember that every individual will deal with a situation differently. If the person’s first reaction is to stay in their current situation or home, we mustn’t tell them to leave or get angry or upset with them. In these situations, victims often feel isolated and need to be willing to take the first step rather than be forced. It takes a great deal of strength for someone to leave their home and they will face many obstacles following this choice. Provide options It’s imperative for victims of domestic violence to know that there are various paths which they can take. Let them know that there are local and domestic violence agencies in place who will offer specialist support and advice. Encourage them to participate in programs specific to their situation and healing modalities. It would also be helpful to inform them of the various websites and hotlines available such as Lifeline and The Domestic Violence Line. Foster their self-confidence and support Being a victim of domestic violence can damage self-worth and confidence. Encourage the friend to participate in activities outside the confines of their home such as physical exercise, yoga or meditation. Building their self-love will help motivate them to face the issue that confronts them and take the necessary actions to get their lives back. Be patient The first step towards resolving the problem is recognising there is a problem. Do not pressure your friend to take action straight away, as they may need time to explore their options and decide what is best for them and their family. evolvetoday.com.au 13
According to Domestic Violence Prevention Centre Gold Coast Inc (DVPC) there are many obstacles that can stand in the way of a woman trying to leave an abusive relationship that must first be overcome to achieve safety. Talking about some of these factors with a support worker can help to assist you in overcoming these barriers. An example of the reasons it may be difficult to leave may include: • Fear for safety • Fear of what he will do when he finds out you have left. • Fear he will carry out a threat to harm or kill you, your children or others. • Fear he will carry out his threat to commit suicide if you leave. • Fear you won't be able to take care of yourself and the children alone. • Isolation from others • Fear of being alone or that no-one will understand or help you. • Pressures about the children • You believe children need two parents and don't want to raise them alone. • Fear your children will be taken from you by a welfare agency or children's services. • You believe that things will get better. • You believe that no one else will love you. • You believe others will think you are stupid for staying as long as you have. FOOD DONATION BIN Through its partnership with Ashmore Rotary, a donation bin is located outside Woolworths at Q Super Centre. St Johns Drop-In Centre is a welcoming place, for those in need of some hot food or seeking refuge off the streets – to have company in a warm and friendly environment. FURRY FRIENDS Q Super Centre is a dog friendly centre, with furry friends welcome as shopping buddies and multiple drink stations set up throughout the centre.
Q Super Centre sponsors two dogs in the Gold Coast Community through the Story Dogs program that sees children and young adolescents reading to dogs. Story Dogs helps more than 875 children each week, with Dog Teams in 113 schools located around the country. When children read to a dog, the outcomes are amazing. New-found hobbies Retirement has given Dave Henry the gift of a passion and talent he never knew he had. All it took was making time to stop and smell the roses or, in his case, the timber or this former workaholic, it is reason to celebrate this exciting new phase of his life. Working in managerial roles within the mining industry, Dave Henry was so busy he didn’t have time for anything else. Dave says it took him about six months of retirement to fully realise there was more to life than working. “I had to get away from that attitude of waking up and thinking ‘What do I need to do today?’ and always being busy,” he says. Dave didn’t have hobbies because work was his hobby. “I found myself sitting around with nothing to do. That’s when I picked up a March 2017
piece of timber.” Without any drawings or plans, Dave has found himself able to build some impressive pieces out of wood from old pallets. He started with birdhouses and quickly moved on to creating coffee tables, dining tables and plant stands. With a new project always on the go, and two sons and three grandchildren close by, Dave says he is celebrating the freedom of the lifestyle he has created for himself. “It’s a very relaxed atmosphere here,” says the Lendlease resident. He often finds himself wandering down for a coffee, or spending an afternoon working on his garden. “I’m so happy – I should have made the move years ago.” For more information about any of the 12 Lendlease villages in Queensland go to retirementbylendlease.com.au or call 1800 550 550. 14

GET IT I GENERAL STORY
Battle of the
bikini babes d
A new wave of entrepreneurship is sweeping our city with new and existing DIY swimwear designers turning their dreams into reality, one bikini at a time. Get it shines the spotlight on local ladies who have their fingers crossed for their piece of the pie when it comes to the bikini obsessed Gold Coast market.
Chantal Umpelby and Jasmin Young Ilana from La Vida
Summer Addiction Swimwear Est 2016 After launching 600 pieces of their White Label collection in December, designer and co-owner Jasmin Young said the self-taught and selffunded pair had received a strong response through online sales. “In a week [we sold almost 30 per cent] of our first collection,” she says. “We’ve been overwhelmed with support from girls not only from the Gold Coast, but across the nation.” “We have designed one of the most versatile bikini tops on the market that can be worn four completely different ways to achieve a unique summer look". While most labels are dictated by current trends, Summer Addiction Swimwear offers a timeless, minimalistic and sophisticated approach to swimwear. We want women across the globe to feel beautiful and empowered while wearing our swimwear designs.”
March 2017
Victoria Rozkowicz and TeAni McDonald
Sandy Pear Pty Ltd Est 2016 “We decided to put everything we could into designing bikinis that empowered women to feel confident at the beach”. “We have researched many local and overseas manufacturing options. China fits our needs best at this time but that is not to say we will rule out changes in the future”. “We researched global, national and regional markets. Market share, products and prices. We mapped and segmented all key competitors to find our own niche in these markets”. “We are confident that we have a differentiated product and theme that goes beyond just selling product. The market will change of course however; our connection with our market will help us continue to deliver against the expectations of our chosen market. On a personal level, for us it’s also about giving women their confidence back, helping create a community of women that support each other no matter what shape you are, we all already have a beach body and it’s ready to go.” 16

“I didn’t realise how many swimwear businesses were out there until I got one. A great starting point for me to maximise, since taking over Mikai last year, has been the established social media following and a closed Facebook group of 7500 Mikai Swimwear VIPs.” “The style of my swimwear is very different, as [is] the fabric I’m using”. “I don’t really have a business plan at the moment, it’s still in action. I am proud that my swimwear is made in Australia, on the north side of Brisbane.”

“I launched my first bikini parade last year with 15 models, and have shot small movies set in and around the Gold Coast, using local models.” “Two local retail outlets are now selling La Vida swimwear; Carra Lee Collective in James Street, Burleigh, and Mossy Boutique in Robina Town Centre.” “There are bikini labels appearing all the time which is why I focus on my strengths. I deliver ethically made Australian pieces using excellent fabrics that last many summers; they’re one of a kind designs with unique prints”. “A major plus is that they’re not mass produced so you don’t see anyone else in your swimwear down the beach.” “In this highly competitive industry of fast fashion, everyone wants to have something new, fresh, and unique, and they want it now. I’m rising to this challenge this year by designing lots more new styles. This is easy for me as I can have new prints out of the door quickly, I can order small quantities and I don’t have long waits for shipping from China.”
Jamie Allen
Jaymes Swimwear Est 2009
“I’ve built strong foundations with loyal customers. I’ve always stayed true to my style so Jaymes Swimwear is unique. I see lot of labels that I can’t tell the difference between them, if I saw them on the beach I wouldn’t know what label it was”. “My swimwear is like a status symbol. Everyone knows you’re wearing Jaymes. They are always a stand out and if they don’t know, girls will come ask. My fit and quality is absolute perfection, they are made in Australia in limited edition. With my summer collections I have a total number cut and once they are made and sold that’s it they are gone; I bring out new bikinis instead of re-stocking.” 17

GET IT I SOCIAL MEDIA
Selfie, snapshot or security threat?
How safe are you on social media? You may be shocked to learn just how revealing your happy snaps really are 'm sorry Madonna, but we are no longer living in a material world. We are living in a social media world. And in social media world, the saying goes: picture or it didn’t happen. No longer is it enough to simply eat your brunch, you must photograph it, filter it and post it. And if you don’t post a mirror selfie in your Lorna Jane tights, did you even work out? So in a world so consumed by images, how much do you really think about what you’re posting? You may be surprised at how these seemingly innocent photos, could be revealing a whole lot more than you ever intended! Boarding Pass Look up #boardingpass on Instagram and you’ll find over 82,000 posts. Who knew it was a thing, right? While you may be tempted to post a photo of your boarding pass to brag about your adventures, think again. With your boarding pass details, savvy users may be able to access your full itinerary, frequent flyer logins and even credit card details. Think covering up your personal details will solve that problem? Wrong. The barcode on your boarding pass also contains all your personal booking details and can be read easily using an online barcode reader. You’ve been warned! Your Workspace It’s a Thursday morning, you’re on your second cup of coffee and productivity is at a peak. You take a quick photo of your workspace with your cute notepad, laptop and kitschy coffee cup and post it online. Perfectly innocent, March 2017
right? Well, one blogger found out how dangerous this can be when, after posting a picture of her home office set up, her followers quickly pointed out that by zooming in on the photo, her diary and post-it notes were clearly visible – featuring phone numbers, personal information, client names and invoices being chased. Gulp! School Uniforms The kids are heading back to school and look adorable in their school uniforms – complete with oversized backpacks and dorky straightbrimmed hat – so you take the traditional back to school snap and post it to Facebook. You’re a proud mumma! Well, you’ve just announced where your child will be 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Does that sound safe to you? No, me neither. Sold Sign Recently, a popular blogger shared a photo that showed her standing with the auction sign out the front of the house she had just purchased. The street number was visible, as well as the name of the real estate agent. One simple Google search using these details delivered her full address and the price she paid at auction. You wouldn’t announce these details publicly, so don’t inadvertently post them in your photos. Gift Cards and Credit Cards Learn this valuable lesson from those who have learned it before you. In 2016, a Perth woman decided to sell an unwanted makeup voucher online to make some extra cash for a 18
holiday. She took a few snaps, uploaded them to Facebook and within minutes the $94 value was stolen. Avoid posting any images that include barcodes or reference numbers, as these can be used easily in an online store. Oh and when it comes to posting a photo of your credit card, the rule is simple: don’t.
Have you discovered the magic of Google Maps Street View? The Google feature provides real life, panoramic views from positions along streets all over the world. Want to see what the house you grew up in looks like? Punch in the address to Google Maps Street View and you’re whisked right back to your childhood home. Amazing! But this technology is loved by more than just the nostalgic. Criminals around the world are utilising the technology to ‘case a joint’ from the comfort of their own home. No longer do they need to sneak around in the shadows of the night to assess your home or business for a potential break in. By using Google Maps Street View, they are able to see potential entry points to your home, if you have a dog, if any security systems or gates are present and find good hiding places around your property. Scary, right?! While there’s not much you can do about this one, it just goes to prove how technology can be used for both good and evil and how aware you need to be about your safety online!

Samantha Sargent, natural skincare expert and distributor of AEOS, reveals how a perfect complexion can be achieved without the need for microdermabrasion Exfoliation is a necessary and basic step in skin care to promote a glowing complexion as it encourages skin cell turnover, stimulates the production of new skin cells and encourages the production of collagen and elastin, the basic building blocks of the skin. To understand why it is so important to choose products with natural ingredients, it’s best to get an understanding of how the skin ‘works’. New skin cells form at the base of the epidermis and slowly move upwards, flattening out as they mature. Extreme exfoliation methods expose under layers of immature cells which have not completed their growth and journey to the outer layer.
How to achieve clear glowing skin naturally Due to these layers not being fully mature they are therefore far more vulnerable to damage from external pollutants and the sun, one of the major factors in aging and dry skin. This is why I feel it is so important to avoid microdermabrasion and opt for high quality organic products that work in harmony with your skin.
The AEOS exfoliant is very mild, offering the possibility to gently ‘polish’ the outer layer of the skin, encouraging the skin’s natural renewal process, whilst delivering vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients that promote hydration and a dramatic improvement in the overall radiance and smoothness of your complexion. energisedorganics.com

gum disease
and your health he mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body and it contains millions of bacteria. In fact it contains more bacteria, than anywhere else in the body. This bacteria is the cause of the most common, yet preventable disease for humans in the world... Gum disease. Gum disease is a chronic infection and having a chronic infection is a serious problem that should not be ignored. It is a common cause of early tooth loss. The early stages of gum disease is called gingivitis. If left to progress, it will start to destroy the bone and ligaments which hold the teeth in place, it is then called periodontitis. Research has shown that there is a direct link between the health of the mouth and the rest of the body. Bacteria causes the gums to become inflamed and therefore makes it easier for more bacteria to enter the bloodstream via the gums. Inflammation in the gums and bacteria in the bloodstream have been linked to serious health problems. These include heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Also of great concern is that gum disease has also been linked to birth complications. CAUSES OF GUM DISEASE Gum disease is caused by plaque, which is the sticky film which forms on our teeth every day that contains millions of bacteria. However other factors also contribute to a person’s risk of developing gum disease. These include: • Hormonal changes • Smoking • Illness • Medications • Family history • Clenching and grinding your teeth • Stress • Poor diet SYMPTOMS OF GUM DISEASE The symptoms of gum disease are often difficult to recognize as it is often painless, even in the late stages. This is why many people are unaware they have gum disease. Although the symptoms are often subtle, there are some telltale warning signs. These include: • Bleeding gums • Red, swollen or tender gums • Persistent bad breath or bad taste • Receeding gums • Loose or shifting teeth
However, even if you do not notice any of the symptoms of gum disease, you may still have some degree of infection. In some cases, gum disease may only affect certain teeth, such as the back molars. A visit to the dental hygienist will determine the presence and severity of gum disease. In nearly all cases, gum disease can be managed with proper home care techniques and regular cleans, but prevention and early detection is the key to keeping our teeth for life. REASONS TO VISIT YOUR MAVEN DENTAL GROUP HYGIENIST Dental Hygienists work together with the Maven Dental Group team to give you the best possible care for your oral health and your general well-being. They provide you with one on one education and training to give you specialised care for prevention and maintenance of the mouth, teeth and gums. If your mouth is not healthy then neither is your body. Contact your local Maven Dental Group team today to book yourself in for a preventive care appointment and get on your way to a healthier smile and healthier you. Visit mavendental.com.au today. 31
facts: Gum disease is the most common disease in the world affecting humans and is a very common cause of tooth loss. You don't have to do it all yourself! “Even though Roger Federer knows a lot about tennis, he still has a coach and a personal trainer to guide him on the way,” says Jeff Osborne, owner of Vision Personal Training in Bundall hen they first start with us, many of my clients tell me about the time and money they have wasted in their attempts to lose weight and get healthy. Most people I see have spent money on gym memberships they never use. And according to Fitness Australia they aren't alone. Only 16 per cent of Australians have and actually use their membership. Let's not forget the money wasted on fad diets and other eating programs, like meal replacement shakes, which aren't really solving anything. They are just a Band-Aid - and an ineffective one at that - for most people. So why do we feel the need to do it all ourselves? Most of us wouldn't think to try and cut our own hair, or fix our own plumbing? I have a theory. I think that the world of Instagram and Facebook and hashtags with the word “fit” in it make the few people who actually do things well themselves - or are genetically gifted with a great body - shame us into thinking that if we can’t then we must be weak or undisciplined… or both? If, from an early age, you found interest in fitness and nutrition and spent years developing your methods and learning the science behind what works and why, you stand a chance of tackling your health DIY style. But the fact is most of us spent those years working or raising a family (a few of us spent them partying... but that's a different article). If you really do want the energy, stamina, good health, strength and body that go with someone that exercises regularly and eats well, then you need to put in some time to developing the habits and refining what works for you. For most people it is time that they just don't have right now. But all is not lost. Having a trainer help you out is not just in the exercise sessions you do with them. That is good, but the real value is how the trainer educates and guides you to make sustainable changes in your life that have positive benefit. Someone that helps you understand what is going on in your body when you eat different food and why and how to make changes that not only get results but make life liveable. A trainer that can show you how you have improved your strength or your cardio fitness. Yes, it is true that you could work all this stuff out yourself, and lots of people do. However the time and expertise that goes into getting it right is where so many people come unstuck. Not to mention the money wasted. So rather than go through all that pain and effort, use a personal trainer who can help guide you through the swamp of inaccurate information and made up research. Because even though Roger Federer knows a lot about tennis, he still has a coach and a personal trainer to guide him on the way so he can focus his energy and time where it is most valuable. I'm sure that there are many of you who would like to see some positive change but have March 2017

Variety matters when selecting a hearing aid When acquiring hearing aids, it’s important that you’re able to choose from the full variety of brands and technologies available, according to Clarity Hearing Solutions’ Principal Audiologist Grant Collins any hearing providers are directly owned by hearing aid manufacturers or have a preferred supplier agreement with one specific manufacturer. While some may allow fittings of other brands if required, others may not give you any options but their own products. Why is that a problem? Like many other industries, different hearing aid manufacturers have unique patented features and technologies specific to their brands. Think of it like a car. If you needed to get from A to B as quickly as possible you might choose a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. Both are specifically designed with speed in mind. However, if you wanted to get from A to B and it involved some cross-country trekking, the Ferrari and Lamborghini wouldn’t be appropriate. You would need a 4WD to get you there. The same is true for hearing aids. I see many patients with completely different
needs that cannot be treated adequately with just one specific brand. I have a patient who lives by herself. She is visually impaired but also extremely independent and continues to live a full and active life. She also suffers from poor feeling in her fingers, which means she can’t insert or change hearing aid batteries, insert or remove the hearing aids themselves or clean and maintain them. This rules out independent use of traditional hearing aids produced by most manufacturers. To solve her specific issue though, I was able to fit her with a product produced by just the one manufacturer called the Lyric hearing aid. The Lyric is inserted into the ear and stays there for two months at a time without removing, changing batteries or cleaning. She can hear 24 hours a day without worrying about managing or maintaining the aids ensuring she retains her independence.
I have another patient with a profound hearing loss. He was born with almost no external ears. This patient requires extremely high-powered hearing aids but almost all high-powered hearing aids have a part that sits behind the external ear, which he does not have. Again, there is one specific brand that specialises in high-powered hearing aids that sit right inside the ear canal. The patient can now wear hidden, virtually invisible hearing aids allowing him his active lifestyle. While these are quite extreme examples, having choice of technology ensures that you get the right solution that will not only treat your hearing loss, but fit in with your lifestyle or situation as well. When you approach an audiologist, make sure they can recommend and fit a variety of brands and technologies ensuring you get the right solution for you P: 1300 252 7489 clarityhearingsolutions.com.au

GET IT I HOW TO
DIYlike a pro
Get it editor Lauren Paris chats to two fabulous ladies who have bucked the tradie trend, working as a plumber and a mechanic. Thanks to their fab tips, you too can change a tyre or fix a leaking tap
How to fix a leaking tap A leaking tap can be a fairly easy problem to fix if you know what to look for according to qualified plumber Rebecca Senyard. “It’s important to understand all taps are different and sometimes calling a plumber may be the best option,” Bec says. “By law, in Australia, replacing washers is something that can be done by an unlicensed person, like yourself.” Bec, who also shares plumbing tips and tricks via her blog The Plumbette, says many DIYer’s fall into the trap of thinking that the washer will fix the leak, but often that’s not always the case. “The first thing to do once you notice your tap is dripping is to feel the temperature of the drip. If it’s cool, you need to replace the cold water washer and if it’s hot, you need to replace the washer in the hot tap. Most plumbers will replace both washers because sure enough if one washer is gone, the other will go soon afterwards.” Bec’s top tips: l The next step is to turn your taps ON and go outside and turn the water off to your house. l Depending on the style of tap handle you have, you need to get to the tap spindle. l Use multi-grips to undo the spindle. l Look at the existing washers and take them to your local plumbing store to get the same ones (or similar). You may need some long nosed pliers to get the washers out if they are deeply inset. l Replace the washers into the spindles and re-install them back into the basin. l Go turn your water on and hopefully the washers will stop the water leak. One step that I didn’t include - and many plumbers will recommend and do - is re-seat the seat of where the washer sits. A special tool can be attached to a drill, purchased from a hardware store that will reseat the taps to ensure the washer sits flush. If you replace your washers and the water still leaks, I can guarantee you will need to reseat the taps. If you are not confident in replacing the washers, please call a licensed plumber who will be happy to do this for you. Visit theplumbette.com.au March 2017
How to change a tyre Ever since she was a child, Gold Coast local Tayla Carter, a technician with Gold Coast Hyundai, had an interest in cars. “I’d be out there helping my dad and brother in the garage,” she says. “I was always interested in becoming a mechanic”. Tayla completed an apprenticeship through Hyundai’s specialised training academy, becoming Hyundai’s first factory-trained female technician in the state. “It’s a pretty cool achievement,” says Tayla who one day “in the distant future” would love to open her own all female workshop that will appeal to a female client base. Tayla’s top tips for changing a tyre: l Find a safe location to change the tyre (in most scenarios, it’s not safe to change a tyre on a highway, so always source help). l Most vehicles have an emergency tyre change kit.The spare tyre as well as well as wrench and jack can usually be found in the boot or pockets and side panels. l Ensure vehicle is on flat ground when jacking. l Identify which tyre needs replacing and place jack under the vehicle at the correct jacking point, which can be found in the owner’s manual. l Jack the car up slightly, but not all the way, so the wheel is still touching the ground. l Loosen the wheel nuts. l Jack the vehicle up until the tyre is off the ground. l Remove the wheel nuts off the rest of the way. l Remove the tyre. l Place the spare tyre on to the vehicle, finger thread and then tighten the wheel nuts back on. l Use the tyre wrench to tighten as much as you can, whilst the car is still jacked up in the air. l Drop the vehicle all the way down, remove the jack and tighten all the wheel nuts. 40

Serious conversations you may have been avoiding, especially with a significant someone is highlighted when Mercury and Saturn link on the 12th. There is a potential to have to revisit the conversation once Mercury and Venus meet on the 18th.
H PISCES February 19 – March 20 You may come to the realisation that you’re not being paid enough in your job, or that you are going above and beyond the call of duty for no extra recognition or cold, hard cash. Jupiter, your ruler in your sector of debts and investments is also asking you to take stock of what you need to do to secure your financial future. H ARIES March 20 – April 19 With such a strong element of fire in the sky now, your natural tendency to rush into situations is supported. In a cosmic twist, Venus, the planet of love, dating and relating turns backward in your sign from the 3rd. Whether it’s a current love interest or a long- term relationship, you’ll find yourself questioning if the amount of energy you’re investing is worth it. H TAURUS April 20 – May 21 Venus, your patron planet takes a once every eight-year retrograde cycle in your most private sector this March. Rest and retreat are the name of the game now as you only have energy for working behind the scenes. This period of slowing down will help you get in touch with your deepest needs and devise a plan of action for the future. H GEMINI May 21 – June 21 Your career and networking sectors are jam packed with planets this month, showing real progress in all the effort you’ve been making
H CANCER June 21 – July 22 Venus is currently taking a backward tour through your 10th house. You may be reassessing your career direction, your job and your value. You are very independent when it comes to your work, if you’re not feeling valued, or that you’re being paid enough, headstrong Venus in Aries may not put up with it. Explore your options for a possible upgrade but keep your cards close to your chest. H LEO July 22 – August 23 The annual Full Moon in Virgo brings attention to your income and cash flow. Going back to the drawing board and devising a new budget is highlighted. Declutter your wallet or purse. Consider downsizing from a traditional wallet to a phone case that only carries a few cards. Focus on minimalism and you may find you spend less. H VIRGO August 23 - September 22 Getting in touch with your own feelings, or doing what helps bring you back into balance is encouraged. Your ruler Mercury is forming a tricky link to Saturn. Conversations may cause some friction, but openness will keep the wheels turning, especially at home. You may find you’ll need to make some deals or negotiate the terms, but Saturn demands you keep your promise. H LIBRA September 22 – October 23 Whether single or partnered, the cosmos invites you to re-assess your values, your priorities as well as your worth. Are you being taken for granted? Perhaps you’re the one who’s been stretching the limits of what your relationship can handle. Either way, this period of withdrawal and refocussing can only create win/win situations in the end.
H SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 It’s been two years since Mars energised your love sector. You’ll be encouraged to embrace new challenges and add passion into an existing relationship. If you’re single, your approach to partnership may take on a more bold or confident expression. Either way, you’ll be ready to face any relating issues head on. March 27 is highlighted for romance as Mars connects with dreamy Neptune. H SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 – Dec 22 Organising your files, your emails and your to-do list on the 13th will help you feel less stressed and ready to tackle any challenges that lie ahead. A tricky combination of Mercury in Pisces and Saturn in your own sign, may leave you feeling stretched in all directions now. Your key to navigating the tension is organisation and prioritisation. H CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20 Your home sector is under the celestial spotlight this month as both Venus and Mars tour this area of your solar chart. Plans and projects to beautify or improve your living space may come to a grinding halt as Venus does from the 3rd. This provides the opportunity to revise your plans and work out what you really want. H AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19 Getting organised about your loans, taxes, investments and superannuation is highlighted. Streamlining or consolidating your finances will reduce stress and help you focus on building for your financial future. If you need to bring in an industry expert, then the 27th is ideal for serious conversations as Mercury, the Full Moon ruler, and Saturn make a cosmic connection.

GET IT I LAST WORD
Sisters are
doing it for themselves!
Elizabeth Campbell has written stories for her entire career, but sharing her tale of adversity took a while to get out
ometimes your life path isn’t what you think it will be. Sometimes you need to get lost, fall over, hit rock bottom and then start again. Sometimes marriages don’t work out. Well, almost 50 per cent of the time they don’t. But almost always you need to go off the beaten track to find your way forward. Almost always as you start again you’ll see the silver linings. And almost always the marriage that doesn’t work out isn’t a failure but an opportunity to learn, grow and restyle your life into whatever you want it to be. Along with the rest of the world I celebrated Valentine’s Day last month… but probably in a completely different way than others might. I was taken out for a lovely dinner, had a glass of bubbles, was given chocolates and went on a romantic walk… to myself, with myself and for myself. I was alone and completely happy about that. It was nice to look back to see how far I’d come. On Valentine’s Day two years ago, I moved in with my parents. I was a broken woman and couldn’t handle life. I was about six months separated and going through the worst time of my life with the divorce. I was in financial hell, my head was a mess, I was stressed to the eyeballs, I couldn't stop crying, couldn't sleep, hated myself and had such low self-esteem - plus my business was quickly going down the tubes and I was about
to lose it. I felt like a complete failure. I was suffering depression and anxiety. Some days I couldn’t get out of bed. Some days I wanted to die. Most people, not even my friends or colleagues, would have known because I wouldn't show it – I wouldn’t let them in. While I was dying on the inside, a brave face was my coping mechanism. Regardless of the abuse I had to endure throughout the divorce, and even afterwards, I wanted to maintain I was OK. That I could handle it. That I was a strong, independent woman who didn’t need looking after. Let alone from my parents! But if I was being truthful, I was a shell of my former self. My toxic relationship had just about broken every piece of me. All I had was my smile – and I use that term loosely because my eyes told a different story when I smiled. When I look at pictures of myself I stare into my eyes and they are sad, glazed over and not connected. That’s what a toxic relationship will do. Kill you on the inside. Steal the stars from your eyes. And crush your dreams. So I was extremely happy to be alone on Valentine’s Day this year, in fact, I love being on my own now. I couldn’t have said that two years go. So when I took myself out for dinner and a romantic self-love walk, I also had a chance to reflect on my journey to overcoming adversity. Did you know divorce is one of the top five most stressful situations you can ever go through in your life? It’s up there with moving
house… I did that eight times in a year while I was separated. I was also running a business. Did you also know that about 80 per cent of start-ups fail in the first two years? When I finally found the courage to leave to my marriage, I’d only been in business for 12 months. The odds weren’t the best, were they? But fast forward two years and I am absolutely in love with my life! I have so much to be grateful for, including my parents, family and friends (it was so fun living with Mum and Dad! And another silver lining I found was getting to know my sisters all over again, especially my littlest sister Belinda). I am in the best mental shape I have ever been in, meditate every day, exercise every day, I feel fit, healthy and happy - and my business is moving so quickly I have to run to catch up to it. Isn’t it funny how a “failure” doesn’t actually have to be that? I like to think of my divorce as an incredible opportunity to learn and grow now, even though it was difficult. I will always find the best in a situation and while it took me a very long time to forgive myself and my ex-husband, I did a lot of personal development and I can one million per cent say I am now living my very best life, chasing the stars and dreaming bigger than big. I have the sparkle back in my eyes now. I'm doing exactly what I've always wanted to do right here, right now. I hope you are too. The best piece of advice I can give is to not be scared of change... it can literally be the best thing that ever happens to you.
I am in the best mental shape I have ever been in, meditate every day, exercise every day, I feel fit, healthy and happy - and my business is moving so quickly I have to run to catch up to it. March 2017
