Wow, May already. How did that happen? I know I’m not alone in feeling two things − that time seems to be speeding up, and that the necessity to move tasks on the to-do list from one day or week to the next is increasing in frequency. Last month, for example, I had two weddings, five family birthdays, Easter catch-ups, helped my dad with a major business premises move, a work trip to South Australia, numerous deadlines, and had to squeeze in new Game of Thrones viewing! I have no doubt you can relate. How is your May looking then? There’s plenty to add to the calendar already, including Mother’s Day (11 May), Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (22 to 25 May) and QT Fashion Week (29 May to 1 June). It would all be very exciting if only there was more time, right?
HOPE ISLAND MEDISPA Anti Ageing Body Sculpting - Day Spa
I recently discovered a YouTube clip presented by SheTakesOnTheWorld.com creator, Natalie MacNeil, where she addresses those of us in the super-stressed-and-busy predicament. She advocates that we always have a choice; we can choose to slow things down, how to approach a situation and can choose to feel that we’re not spiralling out of control. Interestingly she suggests, “Maintain an attitude of gratitude for the overwhelm”. That is, consider what you’re overwhelmed by and view it with gratitude. In my case, I worry about lack of time, but adopting this attitude, I’ve since pondered how lucky I am to have friends and family who add me to their special-occasion guest lists, and work referrals which mean extra savings in the rainy-day fund. It’s wonderful to encounter all manner of opportunities, and even a bulging inbox is worth being thankful for (rather than stressed about) because emails more often than not bring work leads, useful news and messages from our mates.

Remember too, the option to say no or to engage help. Don’t let the overwhelm win. There’s always a choice to get rid of some items off your plate which means you’re able to then focus on what really matters. Perhaps for you that is lunch with loved ones, a play date with the kids, attending a fun local gathering, meeting a personal goal, or if you’re a Jack Bauer fan like me, time to tune in to the new 24: Live Another Day television event (airing soon on TEN)!

LOCAL PROFILE
with Sarah Blinco
There’s a gorgeous skin care range that’s blipping on the celeb radar − it’s natural, delicious, and has been developed right here on the Gold Coast. MooGoo EU director, Angelique Ahearn, shares the details with Sarah Blinco What’s the MooGoo story? MooGoo started about seven years ago almost by accident when our founder, Craig Jones, who at the time was an Air Force pilot, thought he’d try and reformulate the generic gluggy and not-so-nice smelling but natural dairy farm Udder Cream that his mother was using to relieve symptoms of psoriasis. Word spread and this new human-friendly formula packed with skin healing ingredients quickly became a favourite with those suffering from eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions within the community. Craig was then approached to make a natural shampoo for someone suffering from seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff ). This natural shampoo is now one of our best-selling products. Craig wasn’t sure what the future of this range would be, but he enjoyed the process and felt passionate enough about it to quit as an Air Force pilot and step into this new venture. I’ve had various marketing roles over the past 15 years across many different industries and companies including News Ltd, Vodafone, Brisbane Festival and Conrad Jupiters. After having my second baby about four years ago, I was looking for a flexible job. A friend of mine had just done some modelling for a local skin care company that I hadn’t heard of but I really liked the sound of their philosophy and their brand. I contacted them and they were only a small team of three and weren’t looking to hire but they offered me a role as a merchandiser/customer service representative to visit their Gold Coast stockists. Within a few weeks of starting, Craig and I got talking. I pitched some ideas to him and we started talking about growth strategies for MooGoo – shortly after that I took on the role as Marketing Manager which was a big step for the company. What key philosophies lie behind the brand that sets it apart from competitors? In terms of product development, the philosophy is to develop products for people with skin conditions or sensitive skin using the best quality natural, edible May 2014

pastures
ingredients. Most of the new products we make are a result of requests from our customers or from someone in our team. In terms of brand, our philosophy is to be very transparent. We list all the ingredients on our label (something that isn’t required in Australia). We also focus on producing the highest quality products and will always place customer service over advertising. Our phone number and contact details are accessible to everyone and unless you call out of business hours, you’ll never speak to an answering machine. Our phones ring hot with customers wanting to discuss skin conditions and solutions. This is why we invest in training our staff in not only our products but also skin conditions in general. We are lucky to know many of our loyal customers by name. What is MooGoo’s signature product? Our best selling product is our Eczema and Psoriasis Cream. It is licensed as a therapeutic product and is recommended 14
by medical practitioners as an alternative to prescription creams for the relief of eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and fungal and yeast conditions. What’s your favourite in the range? I love the Milk Wash. Having quite sensitive skin and having used soap-free soaps for the majority of my life, I would be lost without it. It’s great for face and body and has such a low irritation level. It cleanses well and smells divine. I use it on my little boys too. How exciting was it for your team to have Gwyneth Paltrow recommend MooGoo’s gradual tanner? So exciting! We recently set up a warehouse and small office in the UK due to the increase in UK internet orders we were receiving. We were relatively unknown at that stage in the competitive UK market though. We sent a little of package of MooGoo to the GOOP (Gwen’s online magazine) office which is based in London. A couple of weeks later, the online orders
spiked – especially our How Now Brown Cow Gradual Tanner. I did a little Googling and we were so proud to see a pic of our gradual tanner listed as one of Gwyneth’s favourites! What is it about Aussie products like this that you think appeals to an international audience? I think there is a perception that because of our climate, we are an outdoorsy, health conscious bunch and therefore many Australian products are perceived this way too. Having dealt with some of our international markets firsthand, I think we are also perceived as professional and good to work with.
I did a little Googling and we were so proud to see a pic of our gradual tanner listed as one of Gwyneth’s favourites! When you’re not working, where would we find you hanging out on the GC? On the weekend, my husband and I are usually doing activities to try and expend some of our son’s energy – surfing at Mermaid Beach, skateboarding (I roller-skate), playing soccer in the park etc. I love hot Bikram Yoga

Gold Coast, and I’ve just started renovating old furniture. My favourite place for coffee is Coffee Sisters at Broadbeach Waters – I can’t find anywhere in the world to rival their coffee! I also love having a drink looking over the beach – the Hurricane Grill in Surfers is a great spot for this.

COVER FEATURE with Sarah Blinco
In a special nod to Mother’s Day, we’d love for you to meet some lovely ladies who prove it’s not just sisters doin’ it for themselves, but mothers and daughters too. Let us introduce you to a few of the most dynamic and fabulous teams on the GC...
Meet Tell us a bit about your business? The Lindy Charm School for Girls is a business that is dedicated to reviving the golden age of glamour and etiquette of the early 20th Century. We’re passionate about empowering girls of all ages to enhance their own natural outer and inner beauty through the best of vintage styling, etiquette and manners. Mum was instrumental (her idea) in getting the wonderful Mother + Daughter workshops up and running – ‘better than beauty’, we offer a guide to charm! The concept came out of our own relationship and the lessons I learnt from mum, so we thought we should use the Lindy Charm School as a vehicle to create the same wonderful experience for others. How did it come about that you ended up working together? My Mum (as with most mums) was my biggest fan, supporter and encourager. She was always pushing me to live and share my passion for all things vintage. I have talents with many things including swing dancing, educating and vintage styling, but sewing and creating crafty things isn’t among them. Mum however, possesses these skills in abundance, so I thought a nice way to distract her from her own cancer, her husband’s ailing health and the suffering of her youngest child with cancer, I would get her more involved in the fun stuff. I knew she would be up for the challenge as Spotlight is indeed her “happy place” to visit and she just didn’t really have a purpose. I started getting her to make flowers that I could give away at my workshops and use to put in hair, then built up the role so she began to package other merchandise for me to sell. Mum has always loved hats and has dabbled in replicating 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s hats in the past but it was when she lost all her hair she became more obsessed with staying stylish without wearing a wig. As Gatsby was all the rage, her cloche hats started to be fashionable again. When dad died May 2014
A FAMILY and money became quite tight, I thought I would pop a couple of her hats up on social media to see if they would sell and my Facebook went crazy! Orders started coming in and now she is making up to ten a week (a lot when they are all handmade, and she does it in between her own treatments and looking after family). She loves it and wakes up in the middle of the night with an idea and has to call me first thing to share, it’s really lovely. She is becoming quite well known now just as ‘Mum’s Hats’ on the Lindy Charm School social media streams. What’s the best thing about working together? Time is precious and our time together is particularly precious. Through it we have both healed a bit over the loss of dad and we support and distract each other over the current situation with my little sister. I 16

Meet Gloria Smith and Kathryn Ral of My Darling Jeannie Tell us a bit about this business? We design exclusive, limited edition silk kaftans, dresses, pants and cushion covers which we sell at our new online boutique My Darling Jeannie. Silk is our chosen fabric because of the beautiful feeling it gives the wearer − it’s both luxurious and comfortable. And all of our collections are adorned with stunning crystals and beading which add to their beauty. We like to offer our clientele the finest quality and exclusivity, so each collection is very limited in number. Our silk cushion covers, clutch purses and jewellery are all limited editions as well so the entire online boutique is very special. You can also see some of our collection at Glamour Place in the Oasis Shopping Centre and Red Pond Marina Mirage. My Darling Jeannie was the phrase that our father/grandfather, Alf, always used when writing to our mother/grandmother, Jean, and his love letters spanned a period of seventy years! His heartfelt gesture of adoration, My Darling Jeannie, has so much emotion and meaning to us. Love really flows through our family so it seemed only fitting to name our business in honour of their wonderful love story. Kaftans have long been worn in our family (you could call it an obsession) and we have family photos dating back to the 1970’s with various family members flaunting the latest kaftan fashion. Back then they were made from cotton of rich colours and embroidered. Our designs are made in silk, in exotic patterns, with rich vibrant colours and accessorised with crystals, so it’s fun to see how they’ve evolved over those decades. During our trip to India last year we were introduced to Asha, an organisation that helps
improve the lives of people living in slums. This was a pivotal moment for us as we witnessed remarkable stories of people overcoming adversities and being triumphant. We are dedicating a percentage of our takings to Asha to help them continue this vital work. We know that this paying forward is no less than Jeannie would have expected. How did it come about that you ended up working together – what made you decide, right, let’s do it!? We’ve had a pretty rough couple of years − first our father/ grandfather passed away then our mother/grandmother seven months later. It really hit us both that life is finite and that we owed it to ourselves to choose the path that would make us truly happy. It was a little scary, but we stopped making excuses and took the plunge, and we’re so pleased we did. It’s totally
liberating to be able to start with an idea and watch your creations come to life. What’s the best thing about working together? We’ve always been really close so working together is just an extension of that. We have a lot of laughs and enjoy the challenge of our new world. The travel together is a bonus! And my eight year old daughter, Poppy, comes with us so it really is a family affair. In three words each, describe what you love about the other person that they bring to this joint venture? Gloria on [her daughter] Kathryn: Enthusiasm, dedication and vibrancy. Kathryn on [her mum] Gloria: Sensibility, creativity, experience. Meet Julie Baunach and Samara Baunach Tell us a bit about your business? We have been designing and making jewellery and home-wares for the last three years from our home studio here on the Gold Coast. Over that time we have grown a lot and have been involved in some amazing projects and photo shoots including the Billabong + Cleo collaboration in Hawaii. It was so exciting seeing our jewels used for such a rad shoot! All our pieces are hand-made by us except for our sterling silver rings, they are made by our Silversmith, Nano. How did it come about that you ended up working together? It was kind of accidental. We had some broken necklaces from Peru that a friend had given us and some old costume jewellery we wanted to re-vamp and we just started playing 17
May 2014
and eventually we collected all sorts of bits and pieces and started buying new beads and stones and the inspiration and creations started flowing and now here we are three years later. What’s the best thing about working together? We have loads of fun, sometimes too much! We inspire and motivate each other. In three words each, describe what you love about the other person that they bring to this joint venture? Samara on [her mum] Julie: Love, laughter, inspiration. Julie on [her daughter]: Creativity, passion, fun. More at wildheartjewellery.com
Meet Kathy Jaffray and Shannon Jaffray How did you got involved in the MS fundraising community? I got involved in fundraising for MS about a year ago through our local MS Support Group on the Gold Coast. The group regularly holds fundraising events in the local area and my daughter and I offered to assist by providing cakes for the cake stalls at these events. Often the fundraising takes place at our local Bunnings store in Burleigh – when this happens we get together for a massive team effort of full-on baking for 48 hours so we have enough cakes and goodies to stock our trusty tables for the whole weekend! Also, my husband and I own a taxi company so last year we arranged a branded maxi taxi to raise awareness of the Kiss Goodbye to MS campaign, which is the national fundraising campaign by MS Research Australia that takes place every May. The taxi has been driving around the Gold Coast branded like this for a year in order to raise awareness for the campaign and this year we are hoping to have even more taxis displaying the Kiss Goodbye to MS brand. How did you come to work together in this way? My daughter loves to bake and given she works in the hospitality industry she was a natural when Saturday came around to selling our tasty treats. My children grew up from a young age with a mother in a wheelchair and that set the tone for them as they grew into adulthood. I was diagnosed with MS in 1996 and within the space of four years I lost the ability to walk. I suffered incontinence and would often get no warning when I was out in public for all the eyes to see so I soon became a recluse. My speech would go from slurring one minute to nothing by the end of the day. Slide boards were introduced, special aide cups and spoons, my body would no longer work so I rapidly lost all independence. Depression was a big part of my life but I was a mother and I knew they needed me. A long seven years went by and I had adapted to life in a May 2014
wheelchair when a new doctor came to the Coast. He was my miracle doctor, and under his treatment and care I began to walk again. It was a long road of many months spent in rehabilitation. There have been bucket loads of tears and a lot of self-doubt, but I always have my family there urging me to put one foot in front of the other. What’s been a recent rewarding experience that you’ve encountered together as a result of these charitable endeavours? Last Christmas when Shannon and I spent eight weeks putting up a display of lights in the garden. We had decided to make it a fundraising event for MS Australia and never dreamt of it turning into the success it became. It was so rewarding − hundreds of people over the season came along and happily sat on our lawn listening to Christmas carols and getting lost in the pretty lights. More surprising were the unexpected stories that came from others who had MS or had family members with it. The gratitude that came and their kind donations humbled both of us. What’s the best thing about working together; how has it changed your lives or perception of one another? Since finding a medication that works for me and adopting a positive mental attitude my life has changed so much for the better. My daughter says to me, ‘Mum, you’re always laughing!’ I lost the ability to do that for such 18
a long time so being able to work together to raise funds towards better MS treatments and a cure – and of course have fun in the process really means a lot to me. Developments in MS research mean that I have gone from spending two years in bed with depression and seven years in a wheelchair to the laughing, carefree mum that I want to be. I have my independence back, I can drive and I can walk and most importantly I can be there when my daughter needs me. What are you both most looking forward to with regards to this these joint endeavours over the coming few years? There will be many more long baking days for the two of us in the kitchen but who knows what lays ahead in our future. The past has taught me to take the bull by the horns and face my MS head on. This Christmas the plan is to have the number one light display on the Coast and therefore hopefully raise more funds. I can’t achieve that without my beautiful daughter, my crazy side kick in the ride that this has become. Kiss Goodbye To MS is the national fundraising campaign for MS Research Australia, happening this month. More at kissgoodbyetoms.org and facebook. com/kissgoodbyetoms. Bunnings are partnering with Kiss Goodbye to MS this Mother’s Day weekend by inviting one and all to hold a BBQ, cake stall or awareness table at your local Bunnings store. The GC steps forward in style as another fabulous fashion event unfolds at QT he Gold Coast is famous for fun, 57km of pristine beaches, theme parks, sporting events, sunshine and shopping, just to name a few. Over the last five years a few more feathers in our city’s cap have been added with the announcement of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, opening of the brand new Gold Coast University Hospital and our new light rail network. On the cards are also the hotly debated Cruise Ship Terminal and Gold Coast Cultural Precinct. Regardless, our city has developed into the sixth largest in Australia attracting over 12 million visitors a year. Although the aspect of our city’s cultural identity has been questioned repeatedly, the city has never been better placed to firmly establish our diversity on a national level. We now boast an array of markets, festivals and much more. Despite our great successes, the one industry that seems to be missing in our impressive portfolio is fashion...or is it? QT Fashion Week & Awards is being held on the Gold Coast from 29 May – 1 June this year. Guests can expect to enjoy daily runway shows, cocktail parties, pamper lounges and shopping all in one stylish location, QT Gold Coast. “This is the third year for our event and we are delighted that each year it is growing from strength to strength. We want QT Fashion Week and Awards to be revered as much as other events on our annual Gold Coast events calendar,” says event organiser Michaela Fitzgerald. QT Fashion Week and Awards is gaining momentum each year 19
featuring designers from all around the state, however the event is attracting attention on a national level. “It gives me great pleasure to see that interest in QT Fashion Week and Awards is now Australia wide. Misha Collection, Lucid Label, Mariam Seddiq, Shapes in the Sand and Muchacho Swim are all up and coming designers from Sydney making the trip to showcase on the Gold Coast at this year’s event,” adds Michaela. A new sponsor of the 2014 event, Gold Coast Airport, provided the perfect backdrop for the recent campaign shoot, including various planes and private jets. “QT Fashion Week organisers are making some great inroads and are really putting the Gold Coast on the map as an emerging fashion hub. As a destination we are worldrenowned for our coastline, hinterland and theme parks to name a few, so it’s great to see QT Fashion Week focused on expanding that appeal,” says Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer, Paul Donovan. In addition to Gold Coast Airport, sponsors for the 2014 include Maserati, Coastal Productions, Robina Town Centre and gcvip.com.au. With an event such as QT Fashion Week and Awards it seems that as a city we are spreading our wings and gaining attention for not just being famous for beaches, theme parks and sunshine, but also a city that loves style. The four day event’s schedule of parades, events and gala dinners is available at fashionweekandawards.com.au. May 2014

How to: glamorous
This hair style is inspired by Spring New York Fashion Week show label, Creatures of the Wind. It is one of my favourite looks for this year; fresh, fun and totally glamorous with a whole lot of modern style. What’s even better, is its super simple to achieve. 1 Section with a deep side parting. Start with prepping the
hair into a glamorous wave (see tutorial on upstylequeen.com) 2 Section away the fringe area from where your side part ends at the crown, to just behind the ear. Clip aside with a sectioning clip. 3 Section the hair from ear to ear and gently tease to give a bit of body and texture. 4 Smooth out the top layer by combing gently. 5 Comb hair into a low ponytail, and secure with an elastic. 6 Take a section of hair (about an inch), wrap around the ponytail, covering the elastic band. 7 Secure with a bobby pin, making sure it’s not visible (on the side or underneath the ponytail is best). 8 Mess up the pony tail by grabbing the ends, and gently pushing the hair up a little. This will give body and texture to your look. 9 Un-clip fringe area and comb gently, you can make this look messy and textured like the back in the previous step or you can leave a bit smoother.

Mother’s Day at
Medispa
It’s a special day − the second Sunday of every May − where we pay particular attention to one of the most influential people in our lives − the figure referred to as ‘mum’ Four things you didn’t know about Mother’s Day 1. The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in West Virginia, and following this she began a campaign to make ‘Mother’s Day’ a recognised holiday in the United States. 2. The tradition of giving gifts to mothers on Mother’s Day in Australia was started by in 1924 by Janet Heyden in Sydney. It all began during a visit to a patient at the Newington State Home for Women, where Janet met many lonely and forgotten mothers. To cheer them up, she rounded up support from local schools and organisations and gathered donations and gifts for the women. Every year after, increasing support for the project was garnered, and the day has since become commercialised. 3. Traditionally in Australia, the chrysanthemum is given to mothers for Mother’s Day as the flower is naturally in season during May and ends in ‘mum’. 4. Another tradition you may notice from time to time, is that men will often wear a chrysanthemum in their lapels in honour of mothers. Make mum feel special this Mother’s Day. At Hope Island Medispa she can indulge in any number of anti-ageing, weight loss, IPL, body contouring, spa and massage services including hot stone massage, reflexology, scrubs, vichy shower and remedial massage. Among Hope Island Medispa’s specialties are the exclusive 24K Gold Facial for improved circulation and radiance; The Protege Elite, the world’s number one skin tightening treatment, and ‘body contouring’ which offers similar results to liposuction but without surgery. HEALTH with Jolanta Paszkiewicz
It must be my
hormones!
Hormones − what are they?
hey are very sensitive chemical messengers that continuously circulate in our blood stream. They regulate every function in the body, from improving bone strength, preventing memory loss, important in heart health, growth and repair to helping us deal with stress. We cannot live without them and when deficient they can ruin our lives. It is impossible to achieve optimal health without a well- balanced hormonal orchestra. There are many hormones that largely affect women’s wellbeing i.e. estrogens, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA ( also known as the anti-ageing hormone). We make more than one estrogen. One of these estrogens i.e.estradiol, and the hormone progesterone fluctuate within a normal menstrual cycle and gradually start to deplete as we come into our forties and beyond. In younger women hormonal imbalances can present as premenstrual symptoms or as PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) or endometriosis. From our late thirties progesterone is the first hormone that starts to go down. Menopause is just the final period after which the ovaries start to become dormant. Pre-menopause and post-menopause are the years leading up to and those following menopause, when women experience most of the symptoms associated with changes in their hormone levels. On average this phase can start some five years before and last up to five years after menopause. Most commonly women will reach menopause between 40-55 years. Hysterectomy can contribute to a surgical menopause, which can set in earlier then may have otherwise. This phase in a woman’s life can contribute to many symptoms e.g. hot flushes, sweats, anxiety, depression, difficulty sleeping, weight gain, bladder problems, dry vagina, memory problems, muscle and joint pains to name but a few.Testosterone and DHEA also play a part in this hormonal orchestra.
Traditionally, doctors have prescribed pharmaceutical HRT to replace the low hormones and ease the symptoms. These are unnatural or synthetic versions of the hormones that we make and can cause undesirable side effects. They are more potent than our own hormones. There is an alternative choice in hormone replacement and that is Bio-identical HRT. Bio-identical hormones are biochemically and molecularly identical to our human hormones. The body recognises them as its own and therefore there are far less side effect problems with them. These are hormones derived from the wild yam plant or soy beans, and have to be extracted from the plant in a laboratory. Mother Nature is very wise and has provided us with a source, when we can no longer make adequate amounts ourselves. BHRT is a very effective in treating many of the hormone deficiency symptoms in and around menopause as well as for conditions such as premenstrual tension, polycystic ovaries, endometriosis, fibrocystic breasts etc. BHRT is available on prescription from a compounding pharmacy but a consultation with a doctor experienced in treating patients holistically and experienced in prescribing BHRT is essential. This is not treatment where one size fits all but is customised for the patient. Hormones do not decline because we age. Rather, we age because our hormones decline!

SUCCESS with Sarah Blinco
Within just a few months of moving to the UK, popular Gold Coast performer, Kylie Smith, scored the role of a lifetime on London’s famous theatre circuit, and it’s only just the beginning. Sarah Blinco discovers more
How long have you been in the UK for now? I moved to London in June last year, so have been here nearly twelve months already. What made you decide to move to London? I have always wanted to move here and give the London scene a go. There is so much more work over here for performers, so that was the main reason for the move. There is the musical theatre industry and then there’s also the commercial dancing industry which both interest me, so basically I just wanted to move here and book as many awesome gigs as I could. What’s the best thing to have happened so far? I have just scored a part in Rock of
A smash inTheatreland Ages the musical which will be touring all over the UK until the end of November. It’s an amazing show for female dancers as they play quite a featured role, so I’m stoked! What was your experience leading up to this opportunity in the UK? After training at Brent Street Performing Arts Centre in Sydney for a year after high school, I started working professionally. I fulfilled two contracts for Royal Caribbean Cruises, back to back contracts at Universal Studios Japan, a couple of short tours around Malaysia and a show at Conrad Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast. In between contracts, I performed at Movie World as Marilyn

Monroe as well as working the corporate entertainment scene and teaching dance at Sheridan’s Studio 1 on GC, which I loved. What are you most looking forward to with this Rock of Ages experience? I can’t wait to start the tour! Rehearsals are amazing and I absolutely love the show. It’s so great to be in a musical where you get to dance full out and with a live band that plays on stage with us every night − I couldn’t have hoped for a better show to be in! I’m also really looking forward to exploring all the different cities we go to. What do you love most about living in London so far? I LOVE everything about living in
30
London! It’s just such an amazing city. Loads of great restaurants, always a new show to see, it’s just constantly buzzing. People go on about the weather but I don’t think it’s too bad. Maybe I have just been lucky since I have lived here. What are you goals for the coming few years? To just keep working professionally in the entertainment industry. I can’t see myself doing anything else. I will see what else London has to offer, or alternatively I might move to LA to give that a go. Eventually it would be great to make the transition over to film and television and I guess LA is the best place to be for that, but we’ll see what happens.

with Peta Yalg
Susanna Mittermaier’s new book, Pragmatic Psychology, promises a host of practical tools we can call on to make us ‘crazy happy’ in life. Peta Yalg discovers more... f you went to see a psychologist and they told you to ‘embrace your crazy’ you would probably be a little confused, right? However, this is the premise behind one successful international clinical psychologist and author’s treatment. Susanna Mittermaier’s Pragmatic Psychology is scoring ‘raving mad’ reviews and achieving ‘crazy’ results all around the world (sorry, couldn’t resist the puns); we in the Get it office were officially intrigued. I had the opportunity to speak to Susanna recently during her book tour of Australia, and have to say, I was instantly enchanted. She radiates unwavering confidence and engaging theories which draw you in. By the end of it I wanted to know more and more! She says the confidence wasn’t always there though. Growing up, Susanna told herself she was too weird, too different and even too happy – so she tried to tame her joy and pushed herself into living someone else’s version of life. Susanna got married and built herself a career and a life in the country. It was only when she became pregnant that she realised how unhappy she was and when she lost the baby late in the pregnancy, Susanna recognised she was at a crossroads. “I can drown in the sadness or I can choose to change”. Susanna chose to change, and spread that change to her work as a psychologist. She felt uncomfortable with the way that her psychological treatment focussed on what was “wrong, wrong, wrong” and all that “needed to
crazy
Embrace your be changed”. She decided she either had to completely change the way she worked, or find a new job. Susanna discovered the Accessing Consciousness phenomenon where she learned a whole new way to be.“Invite possibility to come and dance with you.” Through this experience she learned of the Level of Awareness, which teaches people that they have a choice to change. Susanna describes this as “turning on the lights” in your life. Combining her psychology training with the knowledge she learned in the Accessing Consciousness classes, Susanna developed her own unique combination of psychological treatment – hence the birth of Pragmatic Psychology. After successfully trialling the theories using herself as a guinea pig, Susanna put Pragmatic Psychology to the test. Her first patient was a lady that was so severely depressed that she couldn’t even speak. She found it hard just to get out of bed. After a week of Pragmatic Psychology treatment, the patient was speaking. Now she is living a normal life filled with friends, employment and laughter. A pretty amazing outcome. Another case study, a teenage boy struggling with OCD, ADHD and anxiety now views his ‘disorders’ as powers he can access. He is presently using his renewed outlook to study teaching and hopes to inspire other teenagers to see the greater possibilities in life. Susanna believes resolving psychological pain is not about what is wrong and what you need to remove, it’s about embracing the crazy; embracing yourself for who you are – no matter how weird or different you may be. She reminds me,“Difference adds colour to the world.” Susanna affirms that every moment, people
can choose not only to live, but to thrive. With the release of her new book, Pragmatic Psychology, Susanna finds herself doing just that – thriving in a life she wanted all along. Another interesting revelation is that Susanna sees the body as tightly linked to the mind. She told me she wakes up in the morning asking her body what it wants to do and what it wants to eat. She firmly believes that bodies are smart, they make great friends and tell us all we need to know, if only we listened. Pragmatic Psychology is available as in hard copy and e-book format on amazon. com. More at susannamittermaier.com.

TRAVEL
with Chris Mcleay
Chris Mcleay had always admired Fiji from afar, but decided this would be the year his experience went beyond pictures in magazines. White sandy beaches and the allure of luxury beckoned; he booked a surprise trip for his partner − destination Natadola Bay on the south west corner of the main island − here he shares their adventure t took only three and a half hours from Brisbane airport to reach our destination. The airport in Nadi, Fiji, is quaint and down to earth, that is until you enter the foyer; the larger-than-life personalities of the Fijian people on full display as we were welcomed with a traditional song. This was to be a theme throughout our trip; evidently Fijian culture celebrates music, and the Fijian people are never shy when it comes to rousing enthusiasm through song. As we journeyed from the airport, the lush countryside unfolded − put simply, it is breathtaking! The mountain ranges seem to flow for miles, although the sporadic market stalls stood a little too close to the curb for my safety-conscious liking. Every now and then a tantalising glimpse of the seaside would peep through the curtains of the large mountains to let us know we were almost at our destination. Accommodation Fiji is paradise and there are plenty of accommodation options on offer to best complement such surroundings. Many rooms present with ocean and waterfront views, individual plunge pools and spas. Little extras are often thrown in too, like complimentary upgrades, delicious soaps and locallyproduced coconut butter. There’s nothing quite like leaving your worries (and phone) at home, relaxing by an oversized infinity pool with a cocktail in one hand, book or magazine in the other. This destination is ideal for couples, honeymooners, and even families because there are plenty of ‘kids club’ activities which mean parents are left to their own devices. Outside your accommodation, there are many travel and shopping adventures to be had, but there’s also a world of fun opportunities inside your luxurious, secluded compound. Entertainment abounds at bars and restaurants, including evening torch ceremonies, fire dancing, beach acrobatics, and traditional drumming where the beats consume your whole body, adding to the intoxicating energy this place already beholds. Exotic
oasis
Local adventures and personalised experiences Fiji is a great place to holiday, brimming with luxury amenities and activities. Additionally, when you engage with the local communities you begin to uncover Fiji’s hidden jewels. If you have the opportunity, as we did, take a guided tour of the nearest local village and discover more about the ancient lands you’re standing upon. On our excursion, we ended up at SannaSanna village where we were greeted by a local guide and introduced to a very traditional and interesting world. Religion is a big part of the village’s culture, evidenced by the church being the most prominent fixture of the landscape. During the day we were also treated to a Cava ceremony and learned about its history and ceremonial uses. The lands here are peaceful and admittedly the view from the village is so beautiful, it’s all anyone could wish for. In Australia it would be the equivalent to owning a house with a view from Kirra Point. 32
My partner and I like to investigate the world of the locals wherever we travel, and when presented with the chance to visit a local school we jumped at it. This particular institution was a derelict school only a few years ago, and due to funding from visitors and the nearby InterContinental Hotel, is now a primary school that would not be out of place in any Aussie city. The children and teachers greeted us so happily and once again song filled the air and our hearts. The verdict I have been lucky enough to travel the world, and this trip rates very highly on my list of favourite destinations. I only wish I could have seen more, but with that said, we’re already planning our next trip! For those considering a trip soon, prices in Fiji (when it comes to food and beverage in particular) are relative to those in Australia at present. If you’re seeking a destination brimming with exotic activities, interesting cultural experiences, divine relaxation, service and attention to detail, a visit to Fiji is a must.

HOUSE + HOME
with Dr Kevin Foster
Pets suffer winter blues too
Veterinary surgeon and Ivory Coat ambassador, Dr Kevin Foster, shares his top five tips for ensuring your best friend stays content as the weather cools 1
Keep them active. Arthritis is extremely common in our ageing pets and with the milder weather their joints can start aching. Regular low impact exercise is very important – the last thing we want is for those joints to freeze up. A visit to your trusted vet may be in order to provide some pain relief. For a natural approach try green-lipped mussel powder, one of nature’s most potent antiinflammatories.
2 Keep them lean. Obesity is one of the most common diseases seen in our pets. This can lead to some serious problems including diabetes, heart disease, tumour development and exacerbate the effects of osteoarthritis. If your pet’s activity has dropped off May 2014
and winter spread has set in, be sure to drop the calories (I am talking about the dog here). Replacing one quarter of your dog’s dry food with vegies can be an excellent way to shed the unwanted weight.
3 Mind games. Less activity can lead to boredom for our pets. Boredom can lead to stress and the development of destructive behaviours. Keeping our dogs entertained does not always mean exercise – keep their mind active too! Chew toys, rawhide treats, treat dispensing puzzles (the list is endless). Not only are these great for their teeth but they will provide endless hours of entertainment. Visit your nearest pet supply store for more recommendations. 36
4 Travelling north? Be sure to get your pooch up to date with heartworm and tick prevention. Both these parasites can cause serious illnesses. Car travel can lead to motion sickness in dogs too. If your dog’s carsickness is worse than the kids, then please speak to your vet for some tailored advice. 5 Itchy and scratchy? Skin allergies to dust mites get worse during winter. Be sure to keep up the regular bathing with a natural and sulphate-free shampoo like Ivory Coat (ivorycoat.com.au) to reduce dust mite irritation and to ease the discomfort to your companion. HEALTH
with Suzy Clarkson
What the research says A review of the national exercise guidelines for pregnant women throughout New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, the USA and Canada overwhelmingly concludes it is beneficial to exercise before, during and after pregnancy. ‘Before’ allows you to enter your pregnancy in the best possible state; ‘during’ helps you prepare physically and psychologically for the demands of labour, childbirth and the rigours of looking after a new baby, and achieve appropriate weight gain; and ‘after’ aids your postpartum recovery and gets you back into shape. These ‘authorities’ have progressed even further in recent years, with official recommendations going from merely saying that, yes, it is fine for pregnant women to exercise, to actively encouraging all women without contraindications to participate in aerobic and strength conditioning exercises as part of a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy. Many common pregnancy complaints like — I’m tired /my veins are swollen — I now have cankles not ankles / I can’t sleep at night / I’m stressed and worried — are reduced or alleviated in women who exercise. Furthermore, something like weight-bearing exercise or something as simple as regular, fast walking throughout your pregnancy — can reduce the length of labour and decrease delivery complications. In a nutshell In uncomplicated pregnancies, women who are already active or who want to get active should be encouraged to participate in regular modified aerobic and strength conditioning exercises as part of a healthy lifestyle for mother and baby. Miscarriage and exercise The reality is that the words ‘miscarriage’ and ‘exercise’ should not appear in a sentence that implies any association. There is no link or research to show that regular moderate exercise during early pregnancy has any effect on the incidence of either miscarriage or birth defects. Spontaneous miscarriage occurs so frequently that, unless a woman has three in a row, it is not considered abnormal. There has been much rumour, conjecture and misinformation that the physical effects of exercise early on in pregnancy will cause such things as ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, or defects in the developing baby. There is no science to support this. It is wrong. Healthy women can continue with their usual exercise when they plan to conceive or during early pregnancy, and those choosing to begin an exercise programme can do so without concern, provided that it is gradually introduced and is moderate in intensity. Of course if you are bleeding and are threatening to miscarry, you should rest and consult your LMC, as physical activity is not advisable if you have a partially detached placenta. Suzy Clarkson
Ten years ago, it was more common for a teenager to become a mum for the first time than a woman over 40. The trend is now reversed with ABS statistics showing there are now a record number of 40 plus first-time mums. Fitness expert Suzy Clarkson is one of the many women to choose briefcases over basinets, and here she shares an excerpt from her interesting new book, Fit For Birth. exercising moderately on most if not all days of the week will bring about a swathe of positive health benefits during your pregnancy. How would you like to have increased energy, improved mood and posture, better sleep, enhanced muscle-tone strength and endurance? Are you ready to sign on the dotted line? Of course you are — who wouldn’t be? For previously inactive pregnant women, three sessions per week of 15 minutes duration is an excellent start. Then, over the course of a month, they can build up to the level for previously active women: 30–60 minutes on most if not all days of the week. Later in the book I will explain how to modify this standard prescription for each trimester, and give you plenty of safe exercise options. Beginner — 15 minutes, three times a week Previously active — 30–60 minutes most days of the week I aim for a healthy lifestyle most of the time. The way I do this when I am not pregnant is by adhering to my achievable 90/10 Rule. It’s something I came up with over a decade ago that keeps me motivated to consistently make healthy choices, but also realistically allows for life’s ebb and flow. Here is how it goes: 90 per cent of the time you keep yourself on track with your fitness goals and healthy eating; 10 per cent of the time you cut yourself some slack and allow for the inevitable parties, dinners 38
out, and days when family outings need to take priority over exercising. However, just as exercise goals need to be adapted for pregnancy, so too does my 90/10 rule. For pregnant women an achievable motivational target is to aim for 80/20. Healthy pregnancy: 80 per cent of the time keep yourself on track with activity, healthy food choices and a balance of relaxation, 20 per cent of the time you cut yourself some slack and allow for those busy days, bouts of tiredness and blob-outs. A level-headed approach The aim of exercise during pregnancy is to stay fit, or, if you have previously been sedentary, to gain some moderate fitness. It is not to achieve peak fitness, train for athletic competition or lose weight. Like you, most pregnant women are deeply committed to providing their unborn child with the best possible environment in which to grow. Once educated about any risks, a pregnant woman will go out of her way to minimise harm to the growing fetus. Moderate regular exercise, good nutrition, avoiding smoking, alcohol and drugs are behaviours that will indisputably give your new baby the chance it deserves. Fit for birth and beyond; the guide for women over 35 is available now from exislepublishing.com.au and wherever good books are sold, $29.99; also available as eBook.

Your brightest Want a gift that will make mum smile this Mother’s Day? Luminous Dental explains all you need to know about teeth whitening. What causes tooth discolouration? Extrinsic − when enamel (outer layer of the tooth) is stained from a number of dietary and lifestyle factors; and Intrinsic − when dentine (inner structure of tooth) darkens or has a yellow tint due to age, trauma, root canal treated teeth, certain medications or rare medical conditions. How can you prevent it? 1. Decreasing consumption of food and drinks that predisposes your teeth to discolouration. 2. Rinse your mouth with water after every meal and drink. 3. Smoking cessation to promote better oral health, and overall health. 4. Brushing your teeth twice a day will prevent some stains. 5. Regular professional clean can help remove surface stains. Treatment Intrinsic discolouration cannot be removed with a professional clean or teeth whitening. These may be treated with internal bleaching or
smile
porcelain crown/veneers. However, professional clean and teeth whitening can easily remove extrinsic discolouration. We always recommend teeth whitening after a clean as plaque, tartar, surface stains and calculus can decrease the effectiveness of the whitening process. What are the options for teeth whitening? 1. Whitening toothpaste − these may remove minor stains but will not change the overall colour of your teeth. 2. Over the counter teeth whitening products − these contain a weak whitening agent on strips that sticks to your teeth. These tend to adhere less securely than the custom made trays and take longer to reach desired effect. 3. Professional take-home kits − an impression of your teeth is taken to make fitted trays. The whitening gel is applied and worn for up to 60 minutes per day at your convenience. This, in combination with stronger whitening agents, gives a better result than over the counter products. You will usually see an improvement within two weeks and you may stop when you have reached your desired shade. You have full control and you can apply top ups when required. 4. In chair teeth whitening − a light activated bleaching gel is applied for one to two hours at a
time in the dental surgery. Follow up treatments may be needed. Often this results in instant whiter teeth. Luminous Dental offer both professional inchair teeth whitening and take-home whitening kits to meet your needs. This would make a unique and much appreciated gift for mum this Mother’s Day. DINING
Unrivalled elegance Chris Mcleay indulges in all the finery that Room 81 and its sumptuous new menu has to offer
oom 81 in the heart of Broadbeach has long epitomised fine dining on the Gold Coast. With many awards credited to creative menus and attentive staff, Room 81 is a pure dining delight. The restaurant welcomes new Chef de Cuisine, English-born Sam Moore, who has plans to carry on the strong tradition of culinary greatness. Sam has introduced a new menu that incorporates bold flavours with traditional French cookery techniques. I visited Room 81 on an overcast Tuesday, so unfortunately the alfresco seating was unavailable, but the dining room allowed unprecedented viewing directly into the kitchen, and of Sam and the team in action. Upon arrival, my partner and I were greeted by manager, Alex Liquito, and shown to our table. As we perused the menu, we sampled some of the locally produced artisan rolls with fennel and capsicum. Delicious. The rolls were warm, soft, and it was difficult to stop at just one. An Amuse -bouche arrived of pumpkin soup scented with cumin, which was the perfect remedy for the cool gloomy night outside. For entrée, my choice of the Foie Gras Cigar, Pedro Ximenez Gel, Compressed Plum Caramelised Fig and Hazelnut Ash was impressive. The crisp pastry wrapped around the smooth texture of the foie gras was well balanced with the gentle acidity of the fruits. The hazelnut ash was a welcome addition and completed the dish perfectly. The great thing about dining with a partner is that I get to sample her food choices as well! She decided on the Room 81 Signature Entrée Quail, Slow Cooked Breast and Leg, Smoked Quail Egg, Bacon Crumble, Jicama, Honey Glazed Carrots and Onion Gel. It must be tasted to be appreciated. The presentation alone was impressive and it seemed a shame to have to mess it up to consume. The bird was moist with a subtle game flavour, but the hero of the dish is the smoked quail egg. The soft yolk gave a gentle bump in flavour to the dish, and mixed with the bacon crumbs was a real treat. While we waited for the next course, I had time to fully appreciate the restaurant. The chefs are on show from start to finish, which gives customers a direct look into the delicate May 2014
touches required for a restaurant of this calibre. The red and black colour scheme fits well with the French influence of the restaurant, and the incorporation of a high-end lounge bar to the side is a clever use of space. While we enjoyed our glass of Catalina Sounds Sauvignon Blanc, the main course arrived. I chose the Braised Beef Short Rib, White Onion Puree, Caramelised Baby Onions, Garlic, Potato Cooked in Edible Clay and Sauce Bordelaise. Tender, juicy and incredibly flavourful. The short rib had been cooked for fourteen hours, and pressed to gain as much flavour from the prime cut of the ribs. The vegetable components suited well, but the stand out was the potato in edible clay. It is amazing. The clay is rubbed on the potato and baked at high heat, retaining flavour without drying out the potato. My partner had the Deconstructed Whole Pig Belly, Leg Rillettes, Homemade Black Puddings, Fennel Puree, Pork Crackling and Cider Jus. The slow cooked pork was moist and held great flavour. The crackling was crispy, well salted, and is best partnered with a fork full of the homemade black pudding. The compressed apples were a great touch, and flowed with the 40
other complemented components. Dessert was a decadent display of Pineapple, Passionfruit and Coconut. It was not overly sweet which was a pleasant surprise. It was hard to fit in any more food, but we were both glad we sampled some more ‘art on a plate’. Room 81 is the signature restaurant at the Sofitel Hotel in Broadbeach, open Tuesday to Saturday from 4pm till late. room81.com.au

LIFESTYLE RECIPES
Sassy + simple
Mother and writer, Dianne Ward (thesassycook.com.au), loves helping families simplify their lives. Her recipes are full bodied but without the fuss. Everyone will love these three, especially you, because they are so easy!
Oozy baked camembert A cheese platter can make a superb late night snack or quick dinner. This dish takes the cheese platter to a whole new (and very stylish level). Enjoy, and no guilt please... INGREDIENTS • • • • • •
1 whole good quality Camembert cheese 1 onion 3 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp red wine 1 tsp brown sugar salt and pepper 1 tsp very finely chopped rosemary
METHOD Remove the cheese from the package, make some stripes on top and wrap it in baking paper. Bake it in hot oven for 10 minutes over medium to high heat. Whilst the camembert is in the oven, add the onion to a pan with a little oil and fry. Add a little salt and pepper. When the onion starts to brown, add the soy sauce, wine, brown sugar and rosemary. Allow to simmer until sauce darkens and thickens slightly then set aside. Remove the cheese and pour over the luscious sauce. Serve slathered over fresh crusty grain baguette and with a glass (or two) of red wine.

Vegetable pasta
with mint and rosemary pesto
This is the perfect dish when you only have a few ingredients in the larder; simple to make yet delicious. Dianne does admit she uses a purchased bottle of pasta sauce in this recipe but she says that if Jamie is okay with using the occasional prepared food item, then it is okay for her too. Dianne chops up the veggies very small which minimises the pre-cook time. You could of course use chunky vegetables, but you would need to pre-cook for longer. INGREDIENTS • 200g pasta • 1/2 head cauliflower • 2 carrots • 1 onion • 1 x 495 g bottle of your favourite pasta bake sauce • 1/2 cheese PESTO • 1/2 bunch mint • 1 sprig rosemary – leaves removed • 1/2 cup mixed nuts • 1/2 parmesan • 1/4 Olive oil
No crust pumpkin tart This is like the all American Pumpkin Pie, less the pastry crust. It’s smooth, velvety and with lots of spicy goodness. Dianne says, “Sometimes I just need a dessert, and this one is pretty healthy and okay to eat without any form of guilt”. She makes this with coconut milk because the flavour is great and it is highly nutritious, but you can substitute with milk or cream.
Method Cook pasta according to packet instructions. Place veggies in a food processor and process until very finely chopped. Sweat in a pan for about two minutes to take out some of the moisture. Please don’t brown the mixture as it will make the dish look unappealing. Mix pasta, veggies and sauce then place into a baking dish, top with cheese and bake for about 20 minutes. H Taurus April 20 – May 21 Happy Personal New Year Taurus. Now is the time to be introspective and work on restructuring and reworking your goals to achieve your desired results. Manifestation is the key. This month is also prosperous financially, giving you the leeway to make decisions that will bring longevity and freedom of choice. H Gemini May 21 – June 21 Expect changes this month as the Universal energy shifts. There will be shake ups around you and you will be challenged on how you respond, particularly with your siblings and friends. Don’t allow yourself to get caught up in their dramas, assume the supportive role and allow things to unfold. H Cancer June 21 – July 22 Now is the time for you to take advantage of the Universal energy to refine and redefine your self concept. Consider this an upgrade to the new you and embrace it. Pay attention to your health and dietary intake as well. This is a great time to do a detox and recharge. H LEO July 22 – Aug 23 Pay attention to your health and make sure you’re not burning the candle at both ends. You will need to preserve your energy as changes begin to take place in your career sector. Be prepared for the goal post to be moved and potential dramas to unfold. Forewarned is forearmed.

ASTRO H Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 Hold on to your hat Virgo, this is going to be a very exciting month. You will be tested on your personal philosophy and core beliefs. However, with an increase in your personal power and independence, you will be in a position to lay new foundations around work and finances.
H Libra Sept 22 – Oct 23 Don’t give up on your plans this month Libra. The Universe is still working on getting everything to line up. Beginnings and endings will take place, so expect the unexpected. Don’t let this create unnecessary stress for you. You will have a lot more clarity next month. Hang in there.

H Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20 You have been working very hard to achieve your goals Capricorn, but now is the time to take a break and enjoy a bit of leisure and relaxation. Re-charge your batteries and allow yourself the space to stop and look at the big picture. Rome wasn’t built in a day. H Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19 Home and family take the forefront. Take time to reflect and acknowledge how your loved ones have contributed to your personal growth. Cleansing is good for the soul. It’s not productive to repeat old patterns. Letting go of challenging lessons from the past helps to identify how far you have come.
H Scorpio Oct 23 – Nov 22 Don’t bite off more than you can chew Scorpio.Your health is the primary concern and you need to pay attention to the throat, neck and spine areas. Whilst your endurance levels are high, you are human and your body will let you down if you don’t stop and rest.
H Pisces Febr 19 – March 20 There will be dramas going on in the lives of loved ones and your sensitivity will be heightened. Try not to absorb too much of the energy in your environment. Remember, their problems are not yours and your support and compassion is more valuable, than fixing their problems for them.
H Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 22 Lessons involving self reliance and independence will be the focus and you will be tested in these areas. Singles, good news. Opportunities will be presented for you to find someone special. Couples, your relationships will serve as a teacher for you to grow and learn. Be present in the moment.
H Aries March 20 –April 19 Whilst your career prospects are still positive, there is a shift in your focus and home and family take the spotlight. Keep your emotions in check and avoid taking things to heart. Prosperity is yours, but you need to have your house in order to appreciate it when it comes.

THE
Johan Hasser is head of events at Mulpha Sanctuary Cove and head of Boat Show − this month is one of his most thrilling of the year... Boat Show is always an exciting affair, but what about 2014’s event are you most looking forward to? I look forward to seeing over 38000 visitors, 300 exhibitors and 500 boats on display at Sanctuary Cove. That is always very exciting as it comes together once a year. What’s new this year? This year we are thrilled to offer free train travel for all our ticket holders − this is a new arrangement with Translink and we expect a great boost in visitor numbers. It’s great for the environment and for SCIBS visitors: buy your ticket online, park at your nearest train station, jump on the train and travel the show for free. Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is the first major boat show on the Australian calendar, and therefore exhibitors tend to have the major product launches ready for our show. As for the exhibition, we have increased the size of the popular pavilions this year, which will encourage better May 2014
visitor flow, bigger display areas and more exhibitors. Do you have any details on extraordinary vessels that will be on display (to whet our appetites)? Two super yachts are booked in for the show: the brand new Horizon RP97, a beautiful vessel built with new advanced technology resulting in less weight, superior strength and impeccable finish, and Pure Adrenaline another great 97’ boat with some outstanding features. Pure Adrenalin will also host the Women on Water cruise at SCIBS this year. Although Sanctuary Cove is synonymous with big boats, remember that there are thousands of marine industry products on display, and it’s that range of things to see which makes Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show into the much loved event it is. What’s on offer for families and/ or people who don’t know a lot about boats but are interested to head along to 50
indulge in a little of the SCIBS energy? We offer an extensive family fun program including an interactive Kids Zone, The Channel 7 stage with live entertainment including Creek to Coast crew daily cooking demonstrations, and we also have Master Magician Matt Hollywood’s show as well as the very popular Women on Water program. How long have you been involved with the organisation of Boat Show? I started here 18 months ago, and to get the opportunity to work with a world class event in such a unique stunning location like Sanctuary Cove is a great privilege and great challenge which is both personally and professionally rewarding What would be your dream boat/sea vessel to own? I must say my preference is sailing and to own a decent sized sail boat would be phenomenal. Nothing beats going fast and silent in a sail boat with a good team of mates.
