GET IT I SOCIAL MEDIA
"Did I really fake it?"
22 40
29
Get it’s Hayley Bogaard is lifting the lid on small businesses who are faking it on social media here are many circumstances in life where I fully endorse faking it until you make it. However, building your businesses social media following is not one of them. Too often I have small business owners complain to me that their competitors have thousands more followers than they do and that they can’t compete. Well, here’s the secret: they may be buying their followers. Third party businesses have a database of ‘zombie’ accounts which they can use to follow or like your page. They are inactive accounts, generally with fake names and no further content. You pay the money and they just pop up overnight. It’s a tempting idea and sounds cheap… Wow! 10,000 followers for $100? Who could pass on an offer like that? You should, that’s who. Here’s why. Social media is not a competition. One of the biggest mistakes small businesses make in their approach to social media is measuring the wrong metrics. The most important metric to consider is your engagement — how much your followers actually interact with your content. It is not a competition to see who can get the most likes or followers and, if you’re sitting there watching your number of followers tick over like a self-obsessed teenage girl, you’ve missed the point all together! You will be punished for fake followers! By now, you’ve heard all about the big, scary algorithms that Facebook have put in place and how they restrict businesses from accessing their audience in its entirety. Facebook considers how much engagement your posts receive and uses that data to judge if it is ‘good quality’ content. The more engagement, the higher the quality of the content and the further Facebook will allow your content to reach your 29
followers. Add a few thousand ‘fake followers’, who don’t engage with your content at all, and suddenly your engagement is down, your reach drops and your active followers miss your content. A lose-lose situation! Size doesn’t matter… seriously! Of course thousands of followers looks good on your business page, but it’s not an advantage unless you really know how to use it. Follower numbers are referred to as ‘Vanity Metrics’ because they are superficial and don’t truly reflect the success of your page. Engagement, active users and revenue are what we call ‘Actionable Metrics’, and, as the name suggests, is where the action really is! It is better to have a small audience of active and engaged users than a large audience who are uninterested and static. It can be social media suicide. Like a celebrity tipping off the paparazzi to their activities and then acting shocked when they get photographed with their new lover (*Cough, Taylor Swift, I’m talking to you*), the truth will come out and you will look like an idiot. The same goes on social media. If your audience — or worse, competitors — realise you have paid for your followers, you’re going to lose credibility and respect, and that can be something very hard to recover in the digital world! Do what you know, and do it well! Your focus should be on two things: your product or service and your customers. Find the relationships between the two, and the followers will come organically. It’s important to remember that social media isn’t about you (a crazy concept, I know, but stay with me), it is about your customer: what they want, what they know and what they don’t. Put yourself in their shoes, adjust your content to meet their needs and the followers will flock to you, without you having to pay a single cent!

GET IT I PUBLISHER'S LETTER
ARIAS ON THE GREEN
from the publisher LEANNE HART
May is the month for mothers, and we deserve more than just a day — especially because every other day is all about our children. So mums, sit down with a glass of your favourite beverage somewhere comfortable — whether it’s on the deck, couch or even on the kitchen bench — and lets think about all the times we mothers have had to do stuff we really don’t want to do, but manage to do because we are responsible, loving, and sometimes, very tired parents. Like children’s parties. Those God-awful times when we have the entire class over for a pool party and a house trashing. Keeping one child entertained is hard enough, but 25? I certainly needed a few glasses of wine or something stronger back then once it was all over. Then there’s all the sporting and extracurricular activities we take them to, or worse still, are expected to attend. Stupid o’clock swimming lessons in the middle of winter while we sit in the car and attempt to stay warm, and who in their right mind schedules a football match in Beaudesert at 7am on a Sunday morning? There was never enough hot chocolate for that little adventure. Moving forward to the teenage years… My question is where is the ‘How to survive the teenage years Parent’s Handbook?’ Grunts and nods, the “Oh Mum, you don’t understand” responses, and children that are seemingly unaware that a bedroom is a peaceful haven, not somewhere to hang their entire wardrobe on the floor. Then comes the licence, the parties, the relationships (still not capable of cleaning their room I might add), career choice confusion, unrealistic life expectations and yep — more wine for Mum. Life was so much simpler when they were little. In saying that, I wouldn’t change it (adjust it a little maybe), but I certainly cherish the time I have with my family, whether it be the fur babies or the human kind, I couldn’t imagine my life without them. My beautiful mother always said to me “I hope your children turn out just like you”. What a terrible thing to wish upon the one you love, and yes Mum, they have — Heaven forbid. So, from the Get it girls, we wish you all a happy Mother’s Day and hope that you enjoy the one day that’s ‘all about you’. Mother [muhth-er] – noun

Hacks for being pale on the GC
Specialist
The sunny Gold Coast can be tough to navigate as a paler person, hear how Anna Davis does it eing pale of the Gold Coast is like being that one kid in primary school who used to fully take off their pants to pee. People will stare and try to offer a solution to the problem, but in the end you all end up getting the job done the same way, so why not just embrace it? Plus, I don’t know about taking off your pants to pee, but being one of the few pale people on the GC can have some unexpected benefits… USING YOUR FRIEND’S COMPACT POWDER AS YOUR BRONZER As a pale person on the GC I can almost guarantee you that 90% of your friends’ regular foundation and powder will pass as a bronzer for you. Which is good, because most actual bronzers make it look like you have rubbed dirt on your face. Make the most of this, quite frankly, unfortunate realisation. Whenever you are getting ready with your sunkissed friends make sure to swipe some or alternatively go buy their powder for yourself — if you can handle the confused glances directed your way at Priceline. LOOKING SICK, AND NOT IN SLANG TERMS The sight of your skin in its true natural form — no foundation, no blush, no ‘bronzer’ — will make people exclaim “are you feeling okay? You look really pale!” At first I will admit this is a bit of a kick in the teeth, but why not learn to embrace it? Let the people think what they want to think, especially if it means you get to go home from work early. I’ll take being pasty and at home with Netflix and wine over being tanned and at work any day…

NOT EVEN BOTHERING WITH FAKE TAN Truly embracing your fate as one of the palest people on the Coast means you can avoid the chore of fake tanning forever, but be warned, your friends will still try to fake tan you at every given opportunity. And while they may be used to the smells and sensations of damp Bondi Sands, for you, it’s a different story. A story that starts with you neglecting to BYO baggy ‘tan shirt’ and ends with you sitting naked and sticky on a towel in your friends spare room looking like you just fell into Willy Wonka’s chocolate river and praying to God none of their family open the door. Actually, that could just be me. To my fellow pasty people, go forth and embrace your translucent skin! As for taking off your pants to pee? Not sure whether that was just my primary school, but whatever floats your boat I suppose… 9

GET IT I LOCAL PROFILE
Society’s very acceptable drug Get it’s Kirstin Cuthbert talks with Founder of Overcome Your Emotional Eating and author of My Best Friend Was The Chocolate Cake Renae Bressi on the emotions behind eating pending tens of thousands of dollars on courses, trying every diet and detox under the sun, and still feeling frustrated, Renae Bressi was at her wits’ end. She could not control her eating and it controlled her life for two decades. Renae started undertaking courses to deal with the emotions she was holding on to and had a revelation. “After doing those courses, after dealing with my emotions, I learnt how to tune in to my emotions and stop emotional eating,” Renae says. “I realised it had nothing to do with food and it had everything to do with my emotions.”
Emotional eating is eating for reasons other than hunger; when you’re eating to get rid of an emotion you’re feeling and eating to feel another emotion.
Overcome by joy with her revelation, she had to get the news out there and help others. She became a mindset coach specialising in overcoming emotional eating, developed a 12-week online program, and wrote a book on the topic too. All this talk of emotional eating and you may have no clue what we’re actually talking about! “Emotional eating is eating for reasons other than hunger; when you’re eating to get rid of an emotion you’re feeling and eating to feel another emotion,” Renae explains. “If you’re sad you might want to feel happy, if you’re stressed you might want May 2017
to feel calm, and if you’re lonely you might want to feel loved. “If you have an emotion around why you’re eating, that’s emotional eating.” Renae feels more people emotionally eat than they actually realise, including herself for more than half of her life. “I went through two decades with this issue, and when I started to think back, I was never actually hungry, never physically hungry when I was eating,” she says. “I always had a bag of chips, a chocolate, or something in my handbag to be able to shut down any uncomfortable emotions before I had to feel them.” The inability to deal with our emotions and address them can continue to get stuffed down with food. It could be a certain event that happened 20 years ago or a number of things that have led us to this point. And, worse yet, most people don’t really feel it’s an issue. “As a society food is a very acceptable drug and we abuse it a lot of the time without even realising,” Renae says. So does that mean we can’t enjoy chocolate anymore? “That comes down to being in complete control of your emotions,” Renae says. “If you eat something and you don’t feel an emotional attachment to it, then there’s not a problem. “But if you’re eating and you’re constantly feeling guilty, regretful, or you’re putting yourself down after eating, and you want to stop but can’t, that’s where the problem lies.” Renae sees breakthroughs in many of 10
her clients once they deal with the often ugly emotions they’ve been avoiding feeling. In turn, they gain control of their eating and their lives. She works online with people all over the world from her Gold Coast office helping them to overcome emotional eating. She is working on a second book too. “Being in control of what I eat and being able to share a way that is not commonly shared — it makes me feel great that I can contribute in such a way.”
Could you be an emotional eater? Renae says a trick to be able to test it is to write out a meal plan and stick to it. If you’re unable to stick to it throughout the week, and result to foods off your meal plan when stressful or emotional situations come up, then you’re an emotional eater. Remember, emotional eating has nothing to do with food and everything to do with your emotions.“You need to learn what your emotions are trying to tell you because they’re speaking to you,” Renae says.“Stop focusing on the food and start focusing on the emotions.” If you or anyone you know is dealing with an eating disorder you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14. It may be beneficial for you to work with a coach too.

GET IT I FEATURE
Sex
in the city Get it’s Kirstin Cuthbert goes behind closed doors and speaks with an anonymous Gold Coast swinger about the clubs, rules, scene and stigmas
any of us are happy to pick someone up at a bar, nightclub or on Tinder for a night of casual sex, some couples even looking online to find a third or another couple to have some fun with. Although sexual repression is very much in the past, I found it interesting to learn that swinging is viewed quite differently to bar and website pickups still, although it’s basically the same thing. The main difference between the two is that swingers are open about their wants and desires whereas people at nightclubs or on Tinder generally play more games and won’t just openly admit they want to get laid. (Though it’s certainly not all about getting laid in the swinging scene, but I’ll get to that.) For those of you who don’t know, swinging involves consenting adults getting together for a night of fun and freedom. At the clubs this can mean anything from just talking to taking your clothes off and doing the dirty, and everything in between. Some are there to watch, some are there to be watched, some are there to participate with another person, some are there to participate with multiple May 2017
The Rules j
While it may seem like a wild, free-for-all kind of place, it’s actually quite the opposite. Because of the freedom clubs offer, strict rules apply so that everyone enjoys themselves. l Always ask before touching l No is a complete sentence l Participation is optional, not expected Other rules are in place to show what people in the playrooms are wanting. l Never open a closed door or curtain — these people do not want others to participate l You can watch but do not enter rooms that have a chain across the door l If a door is open, you are welcome to join
14
other people, and some are there just to chat and have a dance. I talked with Jenny* (*name has been changed — she’s not ashamed I should add, but she knows a lot of stigmas still exist so we changed her name). Jenny separated from her husband at 30 who she had been with since 14, and decided to do some exploring for herself. Not a fan of the nightclub scene, she heard about the swingers clubs and became a regular due to the freer and easier environment. She has been involved in the scene on the Gold Coast for quite a long time, even dabbled in owning a club herself and worked at others. THE FIRST TIME When you go into the club there is a bar area, dancefloor and smoking area, much like a nightclub. Some have spas there too. The main difference is that at the clubs there are playrooms either off to the side or upstairs. Jenny explained to me how a typical first timer’s night goes. “Once you walk in your drinks get deposited at the bar in the fridge with your names on them as the clubs are BYO. Then you get toured by one of the owners or somebody that’s working there. They tell you the codes and what’s expected and not expected, the areas and where the toilets and showers are.” “Then basically you sit at the bar and chat. And, depending on the person, how nervous they were or whatever, somebody would spend a bit of time with them. There’s a lot of locals that go that have been doing it for years, all of us could tell when, particularly the women, needed a little bit of a hand. So we’d just sit there and talk to them.” “Then after that basically the person would just go to the bar whenever they wanted a drink, talk to people, and do whatever they felt like doing. A lot of the time for the first night, that was nothing. They’d generally walk out smiling, having had a great time. Occasionally some would get a little more curious on their first night and they’d go up and start looking around.” WHAT GOES ON People from all walks of life and all ages go to the club on Friday and Saturday nights. Often Brisbane people go to the Gold Coast clubs and Gold Coast people go to the Brisbane ones. Majority of the time the people come as couples, sometimes single women and men come along too — though there are a lot more restrictions for single men. Jenny explained to me some of the things she’s seen at the clubs over the years. “There’s a fair bit of group sex (as you would expect). One club I used to go to had a Doctor’s chair with the stirrups and everything, and, if you wanted to, a male or female could hop up in that chair and people would ask if they could join in.” “They have stripper shows just about every week too. I remember one particularly well-endowed man would come along and lie back on a table and allow the women to do as they please — that was always a lot of fun!
It’s something you should all try… you just need to find a club that’s properly run by honest, caring people who are really happy to explore their sexuality. Get your sexual power!”
There was also a cross board you could get chained to and there were a few old-fashioned medieval type of structures but nothing that you haven’t seen on 50 Shades of Grey.” HEALTH AND HYGIENE While oftentimes people may think those who sleep with a few or many others care less about their sexual health and hygiene, don’t let the freeness of swingers fool you. “It’s expected if you are going to bunny hop around the place that you have a shower after each one. There are several showers and toilets and they are always stocked up with washers and douches and condoms. Hygiene is very important. Also if you’ve got a sweat up on the dancefloor it’s expected you shower before entering playrooms.” “The people also care more about sexual health than the average person out there probably. Males are always expected to wear condoms unless you were with your partner.” OPENING THE DOOR IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP Before attending a swinger’s club, Jenny explained to me that it’s best if the couple had explored their fantasies with each other and built up a level of trust. Jenny and the other locals that had been coming to the clubs for some time would talk with newcomers too. “We’d get them to sit down and talk to each other about what they were expecting, particularly if the girl had been brought along by the guy. We’d talk to them about how far it is okay for their partner to go... Do you only want him to be with you and watch? What are your expectations? What would make you feel uncomfortable? What do you want to have happen to you? We’d get them talking. When you know what you’re both expecting you can just relax and have a fun night.” MONOGAMY AND INFIDELITY Many people that haven’t partaken in swinging or similar activities struggle to wrap their head around the concept, and some even see it as cheating. However, it certainly isn’t. “You both consented to walking in the door and you have both spoken about what your expectations are. Many women take the men along so they can observe and feel aroused that way, and then bring it back to their woman.” It allows men to have that alternate experience without going behind his wife’s back, which is a much worse thing to do but it’s almost more acceptable to most 15
people than going to a club. If the wife or partner can be open minded enough to take him along to a club, there wouldn’t be any issue.” STIGMAS AND PRESUMPTIONS Jenny told me the biggest stigma is that “swingers are loose”,promiscuous and have sex with anyone and everyone, which is certainly not the case! While they are more open-minded and free when it comes to exploring their sexuality, they still have preferences and are picky, and, most importantly, choose who they do and do not want to touch and be touched by. “The biggest misconception women have is that they can’t say no; that anyone that approaches them they have to have sex with, which is just not true. Women have the upper hand in there all the time and you are able to say yes or no. No is a complete sentence no matter who says it — male or female. If you say no, even after starting, it’s still taken as no and stop.” EMPOWERMENT AND SEXUAL EXPLORATION Jenny has partaken in swinging for a number of years and thinks it’s something everyone should have a go at. Sexual repression is a thing of the past and sexual empowerment is becoming a larger part of society — so if you’re looking for something new to try, perhaps swinging could be it. “It’s something you should all try… you just need to find a club that’s properly run by honest, caring people who are really happy to explore their sexuality. Get your sexual power!” May 2017

A passion for the locals and
lifestyle Get it sits down for coffee with the Member for Broadwater Verity Barton
n a sunny Tuesday afternoon, Get it sat in the sunshine overlooking the marina at Sanctuary Cove with Verity Barton. With hot pink heels, nails and lipstick, Verity is one vibrant and colourful Member of Parliament! Verity grew up in Brisbane and has called the Gold Coast home since 2003.While growing up she fell in love with the GC and became so passionate about what it has to offer. “I moved because I love the lifestyle in the northern part of the Gold Coast,” she says.“My grandparents have always lived on the Gold Coast so my childhood was spent running around their place at Paradise Point, at the parks in Paradise Point and Runaway Bay, and fishing and crabbing on the Broadwater.” As her passion for the northern Gold Coast area grew, she wanted to become involved on a more meaningful level. “The thing that I’ve always wanted to do is just help people and, for me, going into Parliament has given me the opportunity each and every day to make a difference in someone’s life,” she says. Although most of her days start the same with a gym workout, they’re always different from then on as she hops around the GC meeting with various people. “Sometimes it’s going to a local school to read to kids in prep or going and playing lawn bowls at Paradise Point… sometimes it’s going and helping Sailability at Runaway Bay out,” she says. While Verity loves helping the community in whatever way she can, there’s a few standout moments she’s had over the years. “There was a kid at a local high school who had a lot of self-confidence problems due to their teeth and it was starting to really impact their mental health,” she says. May 2017
Verity loves being part of the community and counts herself lucky every day to serve the people that reside in the Northern Gold Coast. “I get to do one of the best things in the world which is ultimately helping people. It makes me feel really good about myself and I love doing what I do.” You can stay updated with Verity on Facebook: facebook.com/ VerityBartonMP or find out more information at veritybarton.com.au

“Their parents weren’t in a position financially to be able to help them and we were able to intervene and get them some assistance through the Gold Coast hospital, and that made such a difference in that person’s life. “We’ve had women who have escaped violent relationships, who have been couch surfing on friend’s couches or they’ve been living in the back of their car, and we’re able to help them find somewhere to live.” With a vision to keep the amazing community vibe that we have, Verity loves the friendly, laidback people that reside in the Broadwater area. “I want to protect the way of life that we have but also make sure that we’ve got good local schools, that if people need access to the hospital they have access, and ultimately that our community is safe.” 16

Unmasking your hair truth Your dream hair starts with your scalp! ets face it: we all want amazing hair, but few of us are genetically blessed with a thick, luscious mane! We pile on the products, from hair masks to protein treatments to some weird avocado and honey homemade gunk that Sarah from the gym swears by. Yet nothing gets us the results we really want. Well, it’s time to unmask the truth behind your hair complaints and it all starts with your scalp. The reality is, healthy hair starts with the scalp. Conditions such as dandruff and flakiness can actually be symptoms of an underlying problem such as fungal infections. Gross yes, but very treatable once you know what you’re dealing with. Addressing these problems directly, rather than just treating the symptoms, can be the difference between your dream hair and another disappointment. But how do we diagnose these conditions? I’m so glad you asked. A new diagnostic tool created by the clever people at Kérastase Paris – the masters of scalp and hair care – allows us to literally focus in on your scalp and diagnose everything from scalp issues, follicle condition and uncover any underlying

GET IT I FEATURE
Baring IT ALL
Let’s face it… some of us would rather go naked in public than wear no makeup. With more and more celebs revealing themselves in public and on social media makeup free, Get it’s Kirstin Cuthbert explores whether we should be going au naturel too
erfection is what we strive for in this day and age as we’re expected to have ageless, flawless, spotless skin. We undergo continuous beauty treatments, buy hundreds of dollars of makeup and spend so many hours of our lives trying to conceal and mask any imperfection on our skin. Crazy isn’t it? So where does this expectation come from? Hair and Makeup Artist Suzi Dent believes the youthful perfection in the media plays a big part. “Even though most people are aware that many of these images are Photoshopped to perfection, women are still presented with the visual ideal of beauty today as being flawless — where wrinkles and flaws don’t fit in,” Suzi says. “Women start to feel uncomfortable with how they look when their skin shows signs of aging.” As a 55 years young beauty pageant winner, Gold Coaster Suzi was recently crowned Mrs Earth Australia and is using her platform to help other women age fearlessly. “I’m probably the oldest beauty queen to represent our country,” Suzi says. “I am hoping to inspire other women to stop paying attention to their age number and to be fearless about making changes in their lives. “Some people age themselves out of life May May2017 2017
I am hoping to inspire other women to stop paying attention to their age number and to be fearless about making changes in their lives
with their mental attitude. If you continually say to yourself ‘I’m old,’ then you will be old, and you will get old!” Suzi also believes ageism is alive and well in our society and that we need real, older role models celebrated in the media. “If we got to see more older women with wrinkles represented in fashion, and we celebrated wrinkles and the wisdom that comes with them, then maybe we could change things up a bit,” Suzi says. Another woman who agrees with Suzi is Jannifer Black, Director of The V Spot —an online destination for fashion and beauty that is all vegan, eco and ethical. “There is still strong messaging that our worth is determined by our looks,” Jannifer says. “And the obsession with self-documentation on social media to present a picture perfect version of yourself is unhealthily escalating.” Jannifer is a big believer in going without 22 22
Suzi Dent heavy makeup products and regularly practices a makeup-free existence. “I am definitely a makeup-free girl for most of my week,” Jannifer says. “You’ll always catch me wearing lip balm and sometimes a highlighter and mascara if I could be bothered! If I’m out for the night then I’ll glam myself up.” Suzi also regularly goes without makeup at home and wears minimal makeup while working as a Hair and Makeup Artist. “I always wear foundation when I’m working, as it protects my skin from the elements, and I believe foundation is an important product to use to protect the skin from aging,” Suzi says.
Women shouldn’t feel that to be accepted into society and be perceived as beautiful they need to have unlined skin
Jannifer Black “I pop on mascara and a natural coloured lipstick too. I am a big fan of mineral makeup and love NAS Cosmetics.” If you’re looking to get out of your comfort zone and discover a ‘less is more’ new you, but going sans makeup frightens you, start with a more minimalistic look. “First switch from a full coverage foundation to a different formula, like a mineral powder, as it can be applied thick or thin so you will still feel like you have coverage but you’ll save time and use a healthier alternative for your skin,” Suzi says. “Use bronzer as eyeshadow and on the cheeks and forehead as it is a great way to brighten up your entire face. “Wear mascara or get your lashes tinted as it makes your eyes look awake. “Apply a pop of colour on your lips and brush your eyebrows with a dry toothbrush — that’s all you really need for a fresh polished minimalist look.” Beyond the makeup you use, it’s also important to consider what other products you are putting on your skin. “Maintain a good skincare regime with truly clean beauty products,” Jannifer says. “Steer clear of products with chemicals, synthetics, cheap fillers, and other harmful, questionable ingredients,” she says. Jannifer advises women to consider vegan beauty products too as they can boast a wide variety of benefits for your skin and beyond. “Vegan beauty products that are botanically based with pure, truly all-natural ingredients are the way to go,” Jannifer says. “Read the ingredients and be comfortable with what is in the product. From makeup to skincare, there is a safe, effective ‘alternative’ of the same or better quality than what the mainstream is offering.” There are many other aspects to think about when going for a more natural look too, well beyond which makeup we choose to keep and which to ditch.
“I drink green smoothies everyday with spirulina and wheat grass, kelp, barley grass and all sorts of things that are good for my inner health, I’ve been doing it for years,” Suzi says. “I drink water, I enjoy walking and I love doing body weight strength training three times a week. “I am a natural beauty, not a user of Botox and fillers, and try to embrace a healthy mind and body, with regular exercise and good nutrition.” Another aspect you may not consider when thinking about wearing less make up is your clothing. Image Consultant and Blogger at insideoutstyleblog.com Imogen Lamport believes the right colour makes all the difference in you feeling beautiful or feeling blah. “Colours that flatter your natural colouring will make your skin tone look more even and bright with no makeup needed,” Imogen says. “As colour is reflected light, everything you wear on your top half will reflect onto the
skin of your face. Whether this is flattering or unflattering depends on your skin pigments. “By wearing colours that are in harmony with your skin undertone and colour, you will look healthier, more vibrant and rested.” There you have it — everything you need to start your au naturel journey! We’ll leave you with a few fab words from our mid 50s beauty pageant winner Suzi. “Women shouldn’t feel that to be accepted into society and be perceived as beautiful they need to have unlined skin,” Suzi says. “I believe that a positive aging mindset is the most powerful aging-gracefully tool that anyone could have!” We challenge you to shed a few layers of makeup and embrace all that you are!

How to take care of your
Breast assets
Puns aside… learn the importance of breast checks and how you can DIY adies, free up your hands and take off that bra, it’s time to get touch feely for the most serious reason. Around 700 women under 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia each year. The survival rate in women under the age of 40 is lower compared to older women because cancers in younger women tend to be more aggressive. With only 55 per cent of women aged between 50 and 74 years in our local area attending regular breast cancer screening with the free BreastScreen Queensland Program, it’s important that women — of all ages — know what to look out for. “Women over 40, especially women aged 50 to 74, should attend our free breast screening service every two years,” says BreastScreen Queensland Gold Coast Service Senior Health Promotion Officer Julia Foreman. While mammography screening is effective in detecting early signs of breast cancer in older women, it is not effective in younger women.Younger women’s breasts are very dense and appear like white cotton wool on a mammogram, making any early signs of cancer harder to see. According to Julia, it is important to be aware of the normal look and feel of your breasts as early detection is very important. “If you find a breast lump, nipple discharge or any breast changes that concern you, please contact your doctor without delay,” she says. “Finding breast cancer early provides the best chance of surviving the disease.” Women are also encouraged to give themselves a Cheeky Check-Up. the normal look and feel of your breasts — feel yourself up, down and around — everyday. There’s no right or wrong way to check your breasts. There’s no special technique and you don’t need any training. You can check your breasts wherever and whenever works for you. What to look out for 1. A new lump or lumpiness, especially if it’s only in one breast 2. A change in the size or shape of your breast 3. A change to the nipple such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion 4. A nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing 5. A change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling 6. An unusual pain that doesn’t go away Most breast changes aren’t due to cancer — but if you find a change that is unusual for you, see your GP to make sure. DECREASE THE RISK While the cause of breast cancer is unknown, research has shown there are some factors that might increase a woman’s risk or chance of developing breast cancer. The biggest known risk factors for developing breast cancer are being a woman and getting older — two factors we certainly can’t control! A family history of breast cancer can also increase your risk; however, nine out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. Factors that can reduce the risk v Overweight or obese postmenopausal women are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The level of risk rises with increasing body weight. v Avoid or limit alcohol intake. If you choose to drink, limit your alcohol to one or less standard alcoholic drinks per day. v Maintain a healthy body weight. v A balanced diet can help you maintain a healthy body weight. v Be active every day. Aim for 30 minutes or more of brisk physical activity every day. v Having children at a younger age (less than 30 years) can reduce your risk of breast cancer. v The more children you have, the lower your risk. v Breastfeeding for a total of 12 months or longer can slightly reduce your breast cancer risk.
GET IT I SOCIAL MEDIA
"Did I really fake it?"
Should you fake it
til' you make it?
May 2017

Hello fashionistas! Let's talk wardrobes. Getting it right is the key to an easy and workable space. We all have moments of “I hate everything in my wardrobe,” but calm down and look at it realistically. Have a look at everything you own… if it hasn't been worn in two years, it's time to set it free! Hang all your clothing in colour order. Mine are mostly black! It makes it easier to find something in the colour palette you will be wearing this season. My challenge to you this month, should you choose to accept it, is to go shopping in your wardrobe — you never know what hidden gems you may find! Look at different ways to wear what you already have; layer t-shirts under slip dresses, add boots and a fab scarf; add a jacket and boots to your pretty summer dresses for an update. Transform from summer to winter easily! Put away all your summer season pieces that can't be used this new season, including shoes! Keep your wardrobe like an organised kitchen — everything has its place — just like when you are cooking a meal. Have a small rack available to set out a week’s wear of clothing. This is enjoyable to do on the weekend and causes no stress for the following week. But most of all ladies, have fun with this challenge, because life's too short to not look and feel fabulous for the rest of your life! Stay stylish,
Susie

Amanda Higl teaches you how to repair those sun damaged locks as the cooler weather approaches ith so many hair masks on the market, it’s hard to choose wisely. Get it right with these tips. Correct diagnosis What is the problem? Is your hair dehydrated or chemically damaged? Does your hair lack shine? Is it frizzy? Does it lack volume? If you have many of these issues rolled in to one, simply choose the primary problem. Protein vs moisture It’s important to understand what you are buying; this is the key to working out what mask is for you. If your hair is dry and simply dehydrated, go for moisture. If your hair has been chemically treated and damaged, hit the protein. Other words you will find on packaging are “rebuilding, refortifying, restructuring and restrengthening”. Read the instructions Don't have a man look, actually read and follow the instructions! If you don't follow manufacturer’s instructions, you will not get the full benefit of the product. You may as well pour your money down the drain, not to mention your time, which, let’s face it, none of us can afford. Don't just wring out your hair Towel dry it after shampooing to really make sure the excess moisture is gone; this will help
Masking
the benefits your mask absorb properly.Think about when you have a cloth full of water and you try to mop up more water with it — it just doesn't work. When it comes to hair, putting your mask on already water logged hair will simply cause the mask to slide straight down the drain. Your hair should not be greasy afterwards If you find your hair is greasy, whichever mask you are using is way too heavy. When purchasing, look for masks for your specific hair texture type i.e. fine, coarse, fly away or curly. Remember: a little goes a long way; also, try applying your mask on the ends only, not the roots. Too much of a good thing Yes, you can over do it! Especially if you are using protein or “rebuilding” treatments. Have 37
you ever been so ecstatic after doing a couple of masks and then all of a sudden your hair takes a turn for the worse, needing major attention? It's a sign of too much pampering or you need to change your mask type. For general use, apply a mask once a month. It is only hair that has excessive chemical damage which needs more and, if this is you, hit the salon for proper attention — especially because as the hair repairs, the treatment it needs will change. The key to healthy luscious locks is using the mask you buy, understanding what is in the bottle and knowing how to use it. Happy treating ladies! How your health affects your family How healthy and fit you are or aren’t has a big impact on your family tells Jeff Osborne, Owner of Vision Personal Training, Bundall ast week I had the best experience during a weekly session. I have a client who has lost more than 50kg and her husband came in to train with us, and he has lost more than 40kg! They both have kept it off for a few years now and have done things they wouldn't have dreamt of a few short years ago. The most amazing moment was when the mother saw her two daughters working out in the studio and was so proud. She had the realisation that what she and her husband have been doing has rubbed off on the kids. She knows that telling the kids to do one thing and her doing another never works, and it is especially true when it comes to eating well and exercise! If you are flogging yourself at work, eating poorly, drinking to wind down most nights, out of shape and tired... how do you ever expect your kids to be anything else? They will follow the example and while it is unhealthy, my biggest concern is for them on the emotional level. Self-confidence will be lower, socially they will not be as outgoing as they could be and the handicap is not one any kid needs. Now some research has proven that the effect of your choices not only changes your physiology, it also affects your children and their children! Holy doughnut!
At Vision we know that life is busy... and getting busier! We have an entire support structure set up to make improving your health as easy as possible. Simple to follow, effective and time efficient with the accountability busy people need to stay on track. P: 5538 4788 visionpt.com.au/bundall

Since 2010 there has been lots of research into the study of 'epigenetics' which is not just how your genes affect things (it takes many generations for changes to take hold) but on each gene there is a switch, kind of like a dimmer switch, that controls how each gene expresses itself. They were even able to see how losing weight before you conceive a child changes the gene expression in the sperm of the father! If you would like to read deeper jump on Google and type in ‘epigenetics Time Magazine’ for an in-depth article on how the 1812, 1821, 1836 and 1856 famines in northern Sweden changed the obesity rates in the children born around then, and even their children born a generation later! If you plan on having a child, getting in to great shape can change the lives of your children and your grandchildren.... Wow! Big responsibility!

What’s that ringing in your ears? Tinnitus affects almost 1 in 5 Australians. What is it? What causes it? When does it show up? What can be done to treat it? What is tinnitus? Imagine a constant noise in your head. A noise that never lets up. It’s there when you try to sleep and there when you wake up. You can be in the quietest place on Earth, yet tinnitus follows you wherever you go. The biggest thing to understand is the noise a person hears is not imagined. It is real and a symptom of a malfunction somewhere in the hearing system. What causes tinnitus? There are many causes of tinnitus and tinnitus can be brought on or aggravated by one or a number of these causes: l Exposure to loud noise l Stress l Anxiety l Middle ear infections l Age-related hearing loss l Some prescription drugs l Compacted ear wax l Ménière's disease l Head injury The most common cause is exposure to loud noises including concerts or industrial noise, or even listening to your headphones loudly for a long time. Over time this noise damages the fine hairs inside your cochlea. Once damaged, the hearing nerve attached to these hair bundles can trigger, even if there is
no sound that normally triggers the nerve. How does tinnitus affect people? The effects of tinnitus vary from person to person and depend on the severity. Most people can cope with the slight constant annoying sound, but for others the disease can lead to ongoing problems. Tinnitus can have psychological consequences for sufferers. They can be concerned the sound will grow and become so annoying they think they will literally go insane. This is an extreme case but the constant noise can deprive sufferers of sleep leading to shortened attention spans, lack of concentration and even depression. Is there a tinnitus cure? It would be great if there was a magic bullet for tinnitus, but unfortunately there is no cure. Treatment and management options have been trialled and developed and there is constant progress in the field. The current best treatments and remedies for tinnitus include: l Hearing aids: If the cause is hearingloss related, solving the hearing loss allows people to hear softer sounds they
otherwise might miss. These sounds in turn masks the tinnitus. l Masking devices: Masking devices create a different sound to mask the perception of the tinnitus. White noise, ocean waves or music are created in the same pitch of the tinnitus to help cancel it out. l Neuromonics: Neuromonics uses specially formulated music to mask and break the loop with the emotional area of the brain. This reduces the stress associated with tinnitus. Neuromonics also includes counselling to help the sufferer emotionally deal with the tinnitus. Tinnitus plagues up to 20% of the Australian population at some point in their lives and many struggle to live with it. No matter how bad the tinnitus is, the sooner a treatment and management plan is developed, the better the long-term outcome for the sufferer. If you do suffer from tinnitus, speak to your audiologist today to see what steps you can take to lessen the impact of this disease.

SUMMER PRAWNS This recipe will have you feeling like it’s summer still, no matter what the weather is like outside. PREP TIME 40 MINUTES | COOK TIME 2-5 MINUTES | MAKES 2
INGREDIENTS • 250g peeled small green prawns with or without tails OR 6 to 10 larger whole raw prawns • 1 tbsp Buderim Ginger Refresher • 2 spring onions, sliced on a diagonal including green tops • Zest and juice of ½ lime • 1 tbsp of macadamia oil • 2 tbsp of torn coriander leaves • Dutch red, serrano or bird’s eye chilli of your choice, finely sliced GARNISH • Sichuan salt and pepper or fried shallots • Steamed snow or sugar peas, broccoli floret or asparagus spears METHOD If using whole large prawn: remove shell from just above tail to just below head. Cut down back of prawn; de vein, but leave orange row, if desired. With scissors, cut off head legs and head just behind eyes or remove head and butterfly prawns. Combine Ginger Refresher, onions, lime zest and juice, and macadamia oil. Gently stir, cover and stand for at least 30 minutes. Heat medium-size frying pan until very hot, and the surface seems to shimmer. Add prawns and marinade, fry over high heat, stirring gently for about 1 to 5 minutes, depending on size of prawn but do not overcook. Toss through coriander leaves and chilli. Serve immediately, garnished with a sprinkling of Sichuan salt and pepper or fried shallots. HELPFUL NOTES Prawns — there are many species and sizes, the choice is endless. We will leave the choice to you. We have left the heads and tails on the prawns, for added ‘prawn’ flavour, but again the choice is yours! CHOCOLATE AND GINGER TARTLETS A delightful flavour hit of Buderim Ginger Original Ginger Marmalade and Buderim Ginger Naked Ginger that is tumbled through the thick, rich texture and slightly acidic flavour of mascarpone then piled into crisp sweet shortcrust pastry cases and dipped in chocolate. It’s very easy to prepare and delicious to eat! PREP TIME 15-20 MINUTES | MAKES 6
INGREDIENTS • 6 prebaked individual pastry tartlets (around 70mm diameter and 28mm deep) • 3 tablespoons of Buderim Ginger Original Ginger Marmalade or Ginger Lemon & Lime Marmalade • 125g of Italian-style mascarpone • 4 pieces (20g) of Buderim Ginger Naked Ginger, finely chopped • 50g of your favourite dark cooking chocolate or 70% cocoa dark chocolate, melted DECORATION • 2-4 pieces of additional Buderim Ginger Naked Ginger, finely sliced METHOD: Divide and spread marmalade on the base of each of the tartlets. Combine the mascarpone and finely chopped Naked Ginger, mix well. Divide and carefully spread the mascarpone mixture over the marmalade, piling more in the centre to form a pyramid-shape. Carefully melt the chocolate either over hot water or as per manufacturer’s instructions in microwave oven. If chocolate is too thick, just add a drop of vegetable oil, this will make the chocolate more manageable to dip tartlets. Keep chocolate over a bowl of hot water. Dunk each tartlet case into melted chocolate face down, so the chocolate liberally coats the filling of each tart. Decorate with the additional finely sliced Buderim Ginger Naked Ginger. 41

Get your horoscope About Cassandra Tyndall Cassandra is an avid professional astrologer, writer and teacher, based in Brisbane, Australia. Her interest in Astrology started when she was a child reading horoscopes in her mother's magazines. Known for her honesty, passion and insight, Cassandra offers consultations to people all over the globe. cassandratyndall.com H LEO July 22 – August 23 The most dramatic shift for you this May comes in the form of the karmic North Node of the Moon shifting into your own sign. The last time “Rahu” (as its also known) was in your sign was April 2000. The next 18 months heralds a cycle where you can really propel yourself forward and live an authentic life with your inner world and outer world aligning. H VIRGO August 23 - September 22 New ideas and lightbulb moments regarding your debt and investments may help you out of a bind this month as your ruler Mercury and electric Uranus continue to combine until the 16th. Venus, also present in your 8th sector, is now back in direct motion, so you may get to revisit an opportunity or tie up loose ends from February.
H TAURUS April 20 – May 21 An exciting new cycle beings with money on the 26th under the fresh New Moon. This is extra special for you as it is connected with energy planet Mars in your 2nd house, highlighting you have the energy and motivation to make progress financially. Also, the fixed star known as Aldebaran is very close to the New Moon, emphasising the fresh, new beginning feel of this lunation.
H LIBRA September 22 – October 23 Venus, your patron planet, begins the month back in Aries, and in your 7th house of relationships. Due to her recent retrograde phase, issues that began back in February are now back on the table. In Aries, Venus lacks diplomacy and is uncomfortable keeping the peace, instead preferring to stick up for herself and waving a flag of independence, describing your current attitude.
H GEMINI May 21 – June 21 From the 16th Mercury dips into the slow and serene sign of Taurus and into your private 12th house. You may temporarily withdraw for a while as you contemplate, process, and work on some of the ideas that have been in play since late April. This will be a privately productive period especially once Mercury creeps up on Pluto toward the very end of May.
H SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Mars, your planetary ruler, spends the entire month of May in your 8th house. Debts, loans and finances you may share with a spouse or business partner will be your focus. Every two years Mars visits this part of your solar horoscope and you’ll have until June 5 to delve into all things financial. In curious Gemini, you’ll be motivated to explore more options or gain more information.
H CANCER June 21 – July 22 The stunning Full Moon on the 11th will activate a tricky link between Mars, the lunation ruler, as well as dreamy Neptune. You may experience confusion or a lack of direction under nebulous Neptune. With Mars lying in your secretive 12th house you may opt to lay low and spend some time solo to work out what inspires, drives and motivates you.
H SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 – Dec 22 The 19th sees a dynamic link between your ruler Jupiter and Venus in the most fortunate houses of your birth chart. This ‘double luck’ aspect has the potential to bring exciting developments, especially within your social
circles. This could take shape as a new romance, a pleasure pursuit or even children becoming the source of fortunate experiences this month. H CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20 On the 10th the karmic nodes of the Moon shift signs and trigger your money zones for the next 18 months. You may experience a draining of your personal income as you put extra money and attention on savings or reducing your debts. Exciting opportunities open up in the area of joint finances, loans, debts, superannuation and mortgages that will help bring you the security you crave. H AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19 A portal of opportunity in your relationships opens up on the 10th as the karmic north node of the Moon enters Leo and your 7th house. The next 18 months will provide dramatic shifts and exciting potential for both new relationships as well as invigorating an existing one. A possible downside to this transit is it may activate any health issues or leave you lacking in energy and vitality. H PISCES February 19 – March 20 You’ll regain your energy, vitality, and a spring in your step as the south node of the Moon leaves your sign on the 10th, not to return for 18 years. If it’s felt like you’ve been pushing the proverbial uphill for the last year and a half, lacking in energy, or dealt with lingering health issues, and now you can breathe a sigh of relief. H ARIES March 20 – April 19 Mars and Saturn, the two less favourable planets, line up for a face-off on the 28th. Your frustrations may rise as your patience dwindles due to blockages or obstacles. The biggest challenge for you at this time is striking the balance between the details and the bigger picture. One of the upsides of this transit is that you’ll become crystal clear regarding your personal boundaries.
