Chill
ith the season of indulgence soon upon us I thought I’d give a bit of a warning as to what too much indulgence can look like. Last month I spent a week in Bali with my boyfriend. To end the trip we did a four-hour couple’s pampering session. Four hours of nothing but relaxation, wouldn’t that be nice?
FREE
Rid Face Paes & for the inting kids!
It began with a full body massage, very normal. Then we received a full body scrub followed by a full body mask. Now, I’m not shy, but lying on the massage table in absolutely nothing but a see-through disposable elastic underwear is a little confronting. (Props to my boyfriend who also endured the disposable underwear much to his horror.) What followed was a wash down, flower bath, facial then pedicure. Most of it was lovely but there were a few points where I stopped to think, maybe we indulged a little too much.

First was when they washed us down. We sat there side by side on little stools in nothing but our disposable undies as they used buckets of water and their hands to scrub the mask off of us. I definitely know how to shower myself and in the future are more than happy to do so. That was probably too much indulgence. Next was a big flower bath that was laden with frangipanis. Once we were in, they brought us ginger tea and a huge slice of cake each. So, we were sitting in the flower bath (still in the disposable undies I might add) with tea in one hand, a huge slice of cake in the other and probably all the flowers off a whole frangipani tree. Probably too indulgent. The last moment occurred when we were getting facials. Four hours is actually a lot of time to spend in silence with strangers doing things to your bodies. The new experience must have become too much for my poor man as he drifted in and out of sleep, snores abound from the other side of the room. He was tired from four hours of pampering? Yeah, probably too indulgent. Take this as my warning that indulgence is a great thing, but there is such thing as too much. Though I would totally do the four-hour pamper again before leaving Bali. This lesson was not learnt.

GET THINKING
One day, two life lessons — with Nicola George —
had just landed my all-time dream job: to work in the fashion industry with an Australian company who are at the forefront of everything chic and happening. I was excited; ecstatic to be exact, and more so when I got invited to the company's Melbourne Cup party at a swish bar in Brisbane along with 'the powers that be' (TPTB). I started my new job on the Monday. The shindig was on the Tuesday. I checked into the hotel that we were all staying at and prepared for the big day. I had the dress ready, the hair organised, and my makeup plastered in an au natural theme like most girls do. I was the queen of organisation! I was ready to shine and impress my new boss and colleagues… ready to wow them with my fashion sense, wit and charm. I was ready to rule the world, that is, until it came time to get dressed and my dress zip did not close! It was stuck. My enthusiasm flat lined. TPTB made it clear that we had to be punctual and I was already running late and had no time to scramble to the shops to buy a new dress...

Panic stations! I pulled and jerked and twisted that stupid little zipper until my fingers ached, but it would not budge. So, I took the dress off and tried rubbing a bit of soap on the zipper as per Google instructions. It failed. I tried a bit of hair conditioner. That didn’t work either. By this time, I was in a mild (if I’m truly honest… heavy) sweat and in desperate need of a glass of champas or two. I put the dress back on and tried once again, this time something did move, the zipper puller decided to break right off! Needless to say, as I was at a hotel, the only clothes I had were my ripped jeans, a T-shirt and sneakers, i.e. no back up plan. Freaking out doesn’t come naturally to me but on this occasion that’s exactly what I did. I sat on the bed for a few minutes and did nothing. Time stood still. I was in a no-go zone. I heard the slow tick tick tick of the bed side clock; 3, 2, 1 and I got up off the bed faced myself in the mirror and told myself to get off my proverbial derriere and take action. Like a hero that’s exactly what I did! All I was missing was the Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger soundtrack playing in the background. Fifteen minutes later I rocked up to the party wearing my aforementioned jeans and a tad more makeup. My plan was to kill them with my perfect eyebrows and contoured cheekbones so that they wouldn’t notice my lack of dress. Unfortunately, they did very much notice and I felt like a fool. But at the end of the day, everyone was too drunk to care. Thank goodness for Moet! I took two lessons home with me that day:

pro-life advocates who believe that terminating pregnancies defies every human being’s right to life and is akin with homicide. In the opposing corner, the pro-choice advocates, who promote a women’s right to choose, have autonomy over their bodies and argue that abortion is a medical issue, not an ethical or a criminal one. Two formidable adversaries and one passionate — and at times ugly — debate. So, let’s look at both sides of this hotly contested issue. Pro-life The essence of the pro-life advocate's argument is that terminating a pregnancy is terminating a human life. They believe that from the moment of conception, a foetus is a person and is therefore bestowed the same right to life as any other. By this definition, terminating a pregnancy is murder. Cherish Life Queensland (cherishlife.oru.au) state on their website that, ‘without a fundamental right to life, no other human right can take effect or be enjoyed.’ They argue that a foetus is a distinct individual; an identity detached from the mother herself, therefore the right to ‘choose’ is not one that lies with the woman. Cherish Life Queensland also state,‘nowhere else in our legal structure, is someone given a right to choose to kill another. Nor is the unborn a part of the woman’s body. He/she is a distinct individual with a unique genetic code derived from mother and father.’ Pro-choice Those on the pro-choice side of the battlefield advocate for terminations to be decriminalised and treated like all other health procedures. The foundation of their argument is that the right to control one’s body is a fundamental right and not allowing women to abort an unwanted foetus deprives them of this right. Pro-choice campaigners stress the need to consider the woman as a human being, rather than just a carrier of the foetus. Although they are at times accused of taking a casual or callous attitude to the foetus, most pro-choice supporters acknowledge that choosing an abortion is often in the best interest of not only the mother, but the potential the mother has to provide for the child.
Question: How do you make a politician cry? Answer: You ask them to debate abortion legislation.
n a nod to the incredibly personal and deeply sensitive nature of abortion, politicians from both sides broke down in tears during the parliamentary debate and recounted their personal experiences with pregnancy and termination. Here are some of sentiments shared over the course of the debate:
It is about affording women the fundamental human right to have a choice. Their position seeks to not only protect the rights of women’s bodily integrity and autonomy, but endeavours to enable women to participate fully and equally in society. Pregnancy affects women disproportionately, both individually and as a gender, and it is argued that by withholding a woman’s right to choose, society is restricting women’s ability to achieve full political, social, and economic equality with men. What it is, and what is most certainly isn’t There was a time when women could not choose their government. They could not choose their career. They could not choose if they had sex with their husband. And they could not choose what they did if they unexpectedly fell pregnant. That time is behind us and that’s where it should stay. The Termination of Pregnancy Bill is not about whether you agree with abortion or about whether it is right or wrong. Nor is it about the couple down the street struggling to conceive a baby of their own. It is not about women having to abstain from sex if they are ‘unable to deal with the consequences’ of having and enjoying sex without the intention of making a family. It is most definitely not about your religious beliefs. And it is not about whether or not there are concerns regarding the pregnancy that are medical in nature. It is not about defining the parameters of abortion to a state that you deem ‘acceptable’. It is about allowing women to access healthcare that is safe and free from discrimination. It is about affording women the fundamental human right to have a choice.
"I support the right of all Queensland women to make reproductive choices that respect their agency, individuality, desires and dreams. In the 21st century, this issue should indeed be a health issue and not a criminal issue. "If I had a daughter, I would want her to have the same chances in life that my two sons currently have." - Steve Minnikin, LNP Member for Chatsworth "I just feel like this bill should be called 'killing Ted bill' today because that's the way I feel. Every baby has a right to live, whether it's 20 weeks, whether it's 22 weeks, there's a real baby there. I was one of them.” - Ted Sorensen, LNP Member for Hervey Bay
13
“Through this process I am a pregnant woman. I can ensure those few on the other side of this debate that the foul vitriol that has been sent to my office has done nothing but strengthen my resolve to create a better environment for all Queensland women.” - Nikki Boyd, ALP Member for Pine Rivers

GET IT I SUCCESS
I thought I was a worthless mum Amy Coronakes opens up on her post-natal depression errified. Worthless. Not good enough. A failure. These aren’t usually the emotions a woman feels when she becomes a mother, but for Burleigh Waters resident Amy Coronakes, 32, this was her reality. The treacherous time for Amy began before she even held her daughter. With endometriosis followed by surgery and then successful pregnancy, she faced lingering feelings early on. “Something in me started niggling and I worried that something would happen… that I would miscarry,” she explains. Unfortunately, at 25 and a half weeks she was put on bed rest as she was leaking amniotic fluid and at 27 weeks she had to deliver the baby. “From telling me I needed a Category 1 C-Section to the baby being out was under 12 minutes. Then once I woke up I wanted to know if my baby made it and for over half an hour, no one could tell me,” she tells. Thankfully baby Ava did make it. But the months of hospitalisation that followed were completely draining on Amy. “I didn’t think that whole time. And I didn’t do anything other than pump milk and stay at the hospital, next to her incubator,” she remembers. Finally, Ava could go home but that’s when Amy’s anxiety hit full force. Ava had to remain in isolation at home for two long months. “I no longer had the machines where I could see she was okay. I became so fearful she would die that I couldn’t sleep, and with less and less sleep I became more and more scared and exhausted,” she recalls. Then Amy began thinking very negative thoughts. “I thought I wasn’t good enough and she wouldn’t thrive because in my mind I was a failure,” she admits. “I thought I was a worthless mum and that Ava’s life would be better without me. “All I did, day in and day out was compare myself to other mothers. “While I never tried to self-harm, I constantly thought about it and all I wanted to do was die and have her with a better mum.” Amy became aware that she had post-natal depression (PND). “I knew what it was, and always knew I had a predisposition to it, so, I raised my hand and went to the doctor,” she says. At first, she went to a mother baby
unit however it didn’t really help. What really helped was giving up breastfeeding so that her husband could help. “Letting go of that was hard. I admitted myself to a private practice for three weeks where I could focus on my mental health, get better medication and heal,” she says. While Amy’s mental state has improved tremendously with time, she says you never heal from it, not completely, and that’s stopping her from expanding the family. “I would love another child and we did start trying but unfortunately I miscarried. We decided to try again after that, but I realised I couldn’t mentally cope with another baby,” she admits. “Potentially having another breakdown was not in the best interests of the family. I needed to look after my beautiful daughter.” Amy and Ava have come a I no longer had the very long way and today Ava is machines where I in school and doing very well. could see she was “I am a great mum and Ava is thriving. She has no ongoing okay. I became so issues from her prematurity and fearful she would die she loves life,” Amy beams. Over the years Amy stopped that I couldn’t sleep, embarrassed and and with less and less being stopped shying away from her sleep I became more experience. “PND doesn’t define me, and more scared nor does my anxiety. It made and exhausted. me who I am today and made me more compassionate and understanding about other people’s situations,” she says. Amy now runs her own successful Advertising and Design Agency called Kit Creative Australia after 13 years working in advertising for businesses such as Telstra, Westpac and Air New Zealand. She hopes her situation will inspire other women to acknowledge their feelings and worth.

GET IT I PARENTING
Braving the holidays as a new single parent Advice from a fellow single parent courtesy of Ideal Introductions ife is extremely unpredictable and can hit you when you least expect it. Being a Disney kid, I was a believer of true love, lasting marriage, and children — all in that order. Never in a million years would I have predicted that I’d end up a single parent in my 30s with my child only with me 50 per cent of the time. Holiday season brings a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute you’re fine and the next you get teary over a silly advertisement. It’s tough to ignore all the marketing images of happy two-parent families tossing their toddlers into the air. So, how does one brave the holidays as a first-time single parent? Start something new Time for new beginnings so create a new tradition for you and your kids to do every year as a family. Bake Christmas cookies together, watch a movie and camp out in the living room the night before Christmas, engage in craft-making, take a road-trip etc.
Work on a child visitation plan with your ex Initiate healthy communication with your ex by working on a holiday visitation schedule which gives your kids equal time with both parents. Bear in mind that compromises and reasonable considerations should be practiced as much as possible to help reduce friction and stress. Set your intention so you don’t end up drifting Put a goal in place. In this case, make the holidays a special time for you and your kids and focus on that. This way you’ll keep your focus on what’s important and that is ensuring your kids’ needs come first above all else. Refrain from overspending You may feel the need to make up to your kids for this difficult time by overcompensating on gifts and treats. But the last thing you need right now is to rack
up a debt as a single parent. Real talk, there really is no better and more meaningful gift than the security of your time, attention, love, and care. Enjoy some me-time You have been through a lot and you really should be good to yourself. Take time out to enrich and nourish your soul. During days your children are with your ex, participate in activities that you enjoy. Taking a well-deserved break from life’s challenges will help you appreciate and enjoy time with your offspring even more.

was going to be your year! This was going to be the year that you made the necessary changes to create something different in your life. Perhaps you wanted to start a business, leave a relationship or develop the healthiest body you’ve ever had. It was Christmas only a short time ago, but today you woke up and realised life is pretty much still the same. You might have started something on a Monday 20 times over, but by Thursday you were back to the same behaviours, ways of thinking and had the same attitude as before. Do you remember those new year’s resolutions you made? If you haven’t yet achieved your aims for this year, there’s bad news and good news. The bad news is that if you don’t learn how to change your thinking now, you will blink, and five years will have passed before you know it and the regrets will be felt. The good news is that you can unlearn the habitual thinking that has sabotaged your success so far. And you can start today! Here’s your reality check: no one is coming to fix anything for you. If you want things to be different, then you need to think differently. It really is up to you. We’ve never had access to more information and inspiration than we have today. You can find all kinds of solutions, ideas and strategies for change by doing a quick Google search. Here is what’s important: you must be prepared to do the work on you, to carve out time to make your future matter. Investing time in your own learning and development is the most important investment you will ever make. November 2018
Investing time in your own learning and development is the most important investment you will ever make. Research tells us that 95% of our thinking is habitual and up to 80% of that thinking is negative. That’s not as dramatic as it reads. It’s your brain’s way of keeping you safe. When you have a thought that something or someone is unsafe, for example, your brain looks for evidence to make you right so that you avoid that situation next time. If you have a belief that you are not ‘good enough’ your brain will look for evidence that you really aren’t so that you don’t risk your emotional or physical safety. The first step in changing your negative habitual thinking is to become aware of what is happening in your head right now. Explore these questions: l What am I thinking that may not be true? l What beliefs do I have that no longer serve me? l When was the last time I had a brand-new thought? What you think determines how you feel. How you feel determines the actions you take. The actions you take determine the results you get. So, are you ready to bust your own excuses and create new ways of thinking? Here are some strategies you can implement today: 1. Identify the new beliefs you need to be 16
the best version of you. Write them down and say them out loud. Be committed to these beliefs and identify opportunities to practise your new thinking. 2. Tell your tribe. Share your new-found thinking, ideas and goals with your closest friends and family so that they can hold you accountable. Ask them to let you know when they see the old negative thinking creeping into your conversations. 3. Have a clear vision of your future success. Spend time working out what your personal version of success is for the next two years and evolve your vision as your positive thinking evolves. 4. Pay attention. You are constantly receiving messages from your environment about what is and isn’t working in your life. Listen to your own intuition and take action. 5. Get uncomfortable. The greatest learning really does happen in discomfort. To create new thinking, you need to have new experiences. That can be scary, but it will be worth it. 6. Do what other people aren’t prepared to do. The world is full of people who start stuff, but never follow through. Successful people do what’s required and keep going even when it’s hard. Don’t depend on motivation to get you through. The people who are most successful in life are those who have absolute clarity on what success will look like, have a positive mindset and are prepared to learn new ways of being. Bring your dreams, plans and changes to life by proactively working on you. You’re worth it!

THE
CONVERSATION you’d never like to have
How to talk to a friend who is experiencing domestic violence with Counselling Psychologist Carmel O’Brien FAPS here’s many things we love to talk to our girlfriends about — our love lives, wins at work, holiday plans, personal triumphs and gossip of course. These conversations come so naturally for us. But how do we have a conversation with the same friend (or family member) about a topic that is so personal, sensitive and destructive — domestic violence. November 23 is White Ribbon Day, a day to end men's violence against women in Australia. An ABS report found 89 Australian women were killed by their current or former partner between 2008 and 2010, which equates to almost one woman every week. If we suspect our loved one is the victim of violence, what can we say? How do we approach the conversation? Counselling psychologist Carmel O’Brien FAPS is here to help. How the conversation begins There are two ways this conversation typically arises. “Either you’re worried about a friend because of something you have observed and you’re wondering how to start the conversation,” Carmel says. “Or your friend says something about their partner’s behaviour and you think it might be abuse.” First things first, you want to acknowledge that you’re concerned. “It’s about finding a way to say something like, ‘Are you okay?’ or ‘Are you okay in that relationship?’ Make it a really open question that is free of any judgement,” she says. That way, the person feels comfortable to say whatever they need to say. November 2018
Give support not advice It’s important to be patient and let your friend know that if they ever need to talk or need help, you’re there. That doesn’t mean they will necessarily open up right away, it might be in three weeks, three months or three yeaars. “Make it an experience where they feel cared about rather than telling them what to do,” Carmel says. “You must give them control over the situation and honestly be able to sit with not fixing it. Simply be there for them
and let them know that.” In rare cases, if you are very concerned about someone’s physical safety or about a child, you might approach it differently. “You might say, ‘Do you know that what you’ve just told me is actually against the law?’ The person hearing that may find it easier to hear than something like, ‘You mustn’t let him get away with that.’ That implies they are not doing enough,” she says. “Give support not advice.”
It’s about finding a way to say something like, ‘Are you okay?'
CONVERSATION TIPS • Listen without judgement • Respect their privacy • Tell them any abuse they are experiencing is not their fault • Do not excuse the violence • Show that you believe and understand them • Ask them what they want their next step to be and whether they would like your help
20
• Do not jump into rescue mode unless they ask you specifically • Do not assume your experiences and decisions mean that you know what is best for them • Help them find information about where to get help • Do not try to be their counsellor • If they are concerned about their immediate safety the best number to call is 000
The dangers of judgement One of the hardest things about being a friend in this situation is watching it and not being able to fix it. “A lot of women I have seen in counselling have not told friends or not spoken up a second time because they have been told what to do,” Carmel says. “Family have said things like ‘Why don’t you just get out?’ and this indicates judgement.” A lot of the community also can’t understand why a woman doesn’t leave. “The first month after leaving an abusive relationship is the most dangerous time and a lot of women are killed or hurt trying to leave,” Carmel says. By you giving your advice, the person may feel judged and they won’t tell you again. “They may feel that they’ll disappoint you if they don’t do it the way you want. They won’t talk about it anymore and they may not seek help again. That’s a bad outcome,” she says. Be a true friend It’s hard to see a friend in a difficult situation, let alone a dangerous one. But as a friend you can play an important role. Know the warning signs of unhealthy relationships and if you see these in your friend’s partner, alert her. “Often people mistake controlling behaviours for love,” says Carmel. “If you see any warning signs, you might say something like, ‘Are you okay with that?’ Again, ask a question without judgement.” Being there for our friends is something so intrinsic to us women and it’s important that we’re there for them if they ever find themselves in an unhealthy relationship. The conversation may be hard for you but think about how hard the situation must be for them.
THE WARNING SIGNS A relationship may be unhealthy if the other person:
• Moves into your life very quickly • Tries to control you, your social life and your decisions • Pressures and coerces you • Shows outbursts of anger • Deliberately hurts you • Expresses extreme jealousy or stalking • Puts you down • Threatens you • Shows a lack of respect for women • Won’t take responsibility (financially or personally) • Must come first all the time
THE IMPACT OF INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE
By The Psychlopaedia Team at The Australian Psychological Society Dominance and control through many forms of abuse is an unfortunately common and destructive force in many relationships. Intimate partner violence comes in many more forms other than the physical act of hitting, punching or shoving a partner. Often called domestic or family violence, it can manifest as control and abuse in any area of a person’s life, from their social life through to their finances, religion and sex life. It can also involve hurting someone’s children or their pets. One key determinant of intimate partner violence is whether the victim fears their partner. If what you’re doing makes your partner afraid of you, then you’re abusing your partner. How abusers gain control Perpetrators utilise a range of tactics to gain psychological control of their partners. In many cases it’s a gradual process, where the victim’s confidence, selfesteem, and perceptions of their world are slowly undermined. Abusers manipulate their victims through humiliation, isolation, domination, threats, denial, blame, fear and intimidation. Abusers use common tactics such as blatant physical control, abuse or threats, or a cycle of control and abuse, followed by apologies and loving gestures. The perpetrator may question the victim’s decisions, choices, opinions and values. They may shift the responsibility for the abuse to instead blame the victim. Eventually, the victim may accept the blame, either to end an argument or because the perpetrator has reshaped their views. Abusers may also isolate victims from their family and friends. This tactic acts as a double-edged psychological sword, preventing victims from experiencing a reality check. 21
The psychological impact In severe cases, living with abuse is similar to being in a hostage situation where they are prevented from feeling that they can be themselves or move around in their life as they want to. The victim’s self-esteem can be eroded to the point where their sense of self has been replaced by their abuser’s view of them. As a result, victims are often left wondering whether they deserve the abuse or whether they are partly to blame. This makes it more difficult for them to leave or realise that they are being victimised. Victims may also experience other psychological impacts such as depression, anxiety, hyper vigilance, insomnia, concentration difficulties, an inability to trust others and self-loathing. Leaving the relationship For women in a long-term relationship, the final straw is often when an intolerable boundary is crossed. It may be humiliation, the abuse changing from verbal and emotional abuse to physical abuse, or the abuse affecting children. While perpetrators often use fear and intimation effectively to prevent women from leaving an abusive relationship, women can recover from abuse. How to seek help It takes an enormous amount of courage for victims to seek help, but help is available, regardless of whether the victim has experienced physical, social, sexual, spiritual or financial abuse. For some women, the first step is to contact the police to ensure their own personal safety. Another important step is for victims to confide in someone they can trust, whether that’s a friend or family member, a doctor or a counsellor. A range of services exist that can help victims get back on their feet with housing, legal or financial assistance. For professional help, please call 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732). November 2018

Margaret Berndt, Owner and Creator of MIRRA Boutique
Individuality is everything when it comes to fashion for Margaret Berndt, Owner and Creator of MIRRA Boutique. Her desire for different was born as a teen when she would excitedly take home a new purchase and set about altering the garment to please her own style. Not one to follow fashion trends, she relates to the words of Coco Chanel,“Fashions fade, but style remains.” That sense of style has been embedded in the boutiques she has owned over the last 23 years. Margaret believes in finding your own style and then including pieces of current fashion that can be worn in your own way. This gives you a truly unique look that no one else will be wearing. 25

EUROPEAN ADVENTURE Hello fashionistas! Passport? Check! Tickets? Check! Flight details? Check! Capsule wardrobe? Help! Packing for a European trip can be frustrating to say the least. And having just come back from a three-week adventure myself, I like to be sure I'm packing wisely, and not taking anything along for the ride! With my capsule wardrobe, I start with a colour palette. Usually a base of black and white, then start building from there. I always travel in dressy sweatpants with an elastic waist, relaxed top, a pull-on sneaker (so I can take them off and stretch my legs) and a scarf to add a fashionable piece that doubles as a wrap. Be creative and smart with your packing. A basic black swimsuit or bodysuit can be worn from the beach to the bar. Teamed with a black skirt, stunning offthe-shoulder top, belt, heels and drop dead gorgeous jewellery, it becomes an instant dress! Your black skirt can also do double duty with a t-shirt, sandals or sneakers. I always like to look at my agenda when I decide what to pack. Think about what to wear with beautiful backgrounds and scenery for fabulous pictures! Look at your capsule wardrobe of say 10 key pieces that can be worn at least five different ways with the addition of exciting accessories. And remember, leave room for those must-have purchases you will make when travelling the world. Ciao bellas, your adventure begins!

literal translation of this heading ‘faux pas’ means ‘faulty step.’ Very much used universally, sometimes with embarrassment. Another French favourite is ‘Bon Gout’ meaning ‘in good taste’, applicable to everything from fashion to décor to how you hold your cutlery. And how about ‘cul de sac’, ‘dead end street’ but literally it means ‘the ass of the bag’. So therein lies a lesson. So this is Christmas! Ho, ho, ho. I put a lot of thought into present shopping, therefore, look at the inexpensive ideas I put together for your frivolous gift-giving friends: French costume jewellery or German scarves — you can’t go wrong! It’s the season to party and party girls are looked after. Attractive dusty pink, silver grey or light blue sexy kneelength dresses featuring some glitz appliques with a bit of glamorous allure. Tulle-like fabric gives it that party look. This story also includes three-quarter jackets and pants. Another top pick is ‘Planet’, a new label for Australia from USA. Great tops — one size only for the whole range of long tees. An astronomic look! Come in and see the large selection of pure cotton summer A-line everyday dresses. All you need are a pair of sandals and you’ll be ready for Christmas lunch with all the family and friends. One of my French clients whispered to me recently, “Just tell your ladies to remember the three-worded code: ‘Discretion, seduction, elegance.’” She claims that’s all you require as a female to be a bit special. I wish you all a great Melbourne Cup Day. I’ll be at the Italo-Australian Club doing my cup parade. It should be a day full of surprises, but I’ll have to stop here, or it wouldn’t be a surprise anymore. Signing off for now, but pop in and say ‘Hi’.

THE
finishing TOUCH
Spraying a perfume is easy — a little spritz here and there and you’re done, but truly wearing a fragrance requires a little more flair and finesse
We all have a signature scent — whether it is floral and girly, fresh and distinctive or musky and alluring — and we all love the exuding confidence and joy it incites in us. But there is nothing as disappointing as getting to lunchtime and realising your enchanting scent has worn off. Follow these simple tips to ensure your fragrance tantalises all the way from your morning meeting to after-work martinis. Primed to perfection It’s important that you create the perfect base for your scent so that it lingers all day long. The best time to apply your fragrance is straight after your shower, when your pores are open from the steam and more porous. But before you do, apply a light moisturiser or scent-free lotion to your skin. This will create a barrier between the perfume and your skin, slowing the rate of absorption and creating a great base for your perfume to stick to!

Know your pulse points Spritzing your favourite fragrance should be a delicate and considered art form. Aim to apply your perfume to your pulse point such as the nape of the neck, behind the ears, collarbone, inside the elbows and inner wrists as the natural fluctuations in your body temperature in these areas will react with your perfume and emit the scent throughout the day. Finish off with a quick spritz above your head; the porous strands of your hair will hold the fragrance for a lasting effect!
4
6 Do. Not. Rub. Most of us know this rule by now, yet so many are still guilty of committing this fragrance crime! Rather than rub your perfume into the skin, which breaks the fragrance, simply dab it onto your pulse points. Remember, your scent should sit delicately on top of your skin, not be rubbed in like a moisturiser!

Budgeting for a
bathroom
Learn when to splurge and when to save with Wesley Sinclair from Highgrove Bathrooms
Accounting for nearly half of your renovation budget, the fixtures and fittings you choose can make or break the look and feel of your bathroom.
November 2018
here’s no doubt that planning a home renovation is a mammoth task. With so many different considerations, where do you start? The average bathroom renovation can range from $5,000 to $20,000, depending on the space and how much you’re looking to revamp, so it’s crucial to kick things off properly. But before the actual renovating even takes place, it’s important to make a plan and set a budget. The costs of fixtures, tiling, plumbing and electricals can really add up if you don’t plan ahead. Always allow for a 10% buffer for any unexpected costs that may come up along the way. For a full bathroom renovation, a rough guide would be to spend 40% of your budget on fixtures, 35% on tiling, 20% on plumbing and the last 5% on electricals. Fixtures Don’t blow your budget on pricey mirrors, robe hooks, tapware, basins, towel racks and the like. Accounting for nearly half of your renovation budget, the fixtures and fittings you choose can make or break the look and feel of your bathroom. The fixtures to splurge on are your cabinetry, toilet and bathtub (if you’re looking to include one). Ample storage space is a must for every bathroom, so choosing the right vanity and shelving for all your bathroom essentials is vital. Opting for a wall hung vanity will free up floor space and give you the illusion of a bigger bathroom. When choosing a toilet, think about the WELS (water efficiency) rating as well as how easy it’s going to be to keep clean. Wall face toilets eliminate the need to reach around and clean behind your toilet, and rimless toilets provide a more hygienic flushing experience. Quality, affordable accessories that can coordinate your whole bathroom look are readily available and can be updated later when you’re ready for a refresh. Tiling The amount of your budget spent on tiling will be determined by the size of your space and how high you want your wall tiling to go. Floor to ceiling wall tiles is a luxury bathroom trend we’ve seen emerge over the last five years and it can instantly add value to your 30
home. Ranging anywhere from between $30 to $200 per square metre, the final tile price will depend on whether you opt for a basic or opulent look. Complex designs like mosaics and herringbone patterns are more expensive and can cost more to lay too. On top of the price of your tiles, the actual installation can set you back around $40 per square metre. Make sure you professionally waterproof the areas around your toilet, vanity, shower and bathtub to protect the integrity of your floors and walls. If your tiles are still in good condition, you could consider re-grouting instead of completely replacing. Opting for a bit of facelift rather than a complete overhaul will save you lot of money, and in some cases, that fresh white grout is all that’s needed for a brand-new look! Plumbing There are plenty of ways to save $ when renovating your bathroom, however, plumbing isn’t one of them. Don't skimp when professionally fitting your basin, toilet, shower and bathtub, as poor plumbing can lead to many problems down the track. Plus, some products are only covered by warranty if they’re professionally fitted too, so make sure you do your research. The hourly rate of a plumber is $80 on average, or they can charge per task. To completely renovate and rearrange the space, your plumber will need more time to extend and change the current layout to suit your new bathroom plan. Always get a quote and avoid changing your original plans if possible! Electricals The electrical elements in a bathroom can sometimes be overlooked when planning a renovation — think exhaust fans, downlights, LED mirrors, heated towel rails, power points and light switches. Always plan your electrical layout before doing any tiling as it’s much easier to run the necessary wires and cables. You want your lighting to be effective enough to carry out daily activities like shaving, applying makeup and brushing your teeth. As most of these activities centre around your vanity, having wall sconces or an LED mirror will help illuminate this area. Also make sure you select and install a good quality exhaust fan to eliminate moisture build up in your bathroom. There are so many options available to complete your bathroom renovation on time and on budget. Make sure you speak with the experts first; your plumber, tiler and electrician. Their advice is free and can be invaluable in helping you to avoid costly mistakes.

GET IT I LOVE
THESE 6 WORDS END ANY
argument
ou wake up and, for a moment, things seem normal… until you notice your stiff neck. You look around and realise you’re not in bed next to your partner. You’re on the couch. Suddenly, it all comes rushing back to you. You had an argument last night. It was over something stupid at first but, like always, it turned into something bigger. Your partner tried to apologise but you just couldn’t let it go. Now it’s the morning, and he’s already left for work. Your stomach is in knots. You don’t want this argument to drag on forever. You want to forgive him, but you just don’t know how to get over your feelings.
Sound familiar? If so, pay close attention on how to recover from an argument. Contrary to popular belief, arguments themselves aren’t what damage relationships; it’s the amount of time that people take to recover after an argument. I’m sure you have had disagreements in the past where you apologised and then your partner didn’t get over it. They carried on being stressed and angry. Those types of things can ruin your day, week or longer, and life is too short for that. But no matter how compatible you are, in relationships, disagreements are inevitable. So, instead of focusing on not
having arguments in the first place, what you need to focus on is the recovery time after an argument. If you can have a discussion or have a debate about something and then quickly snap back from it, that’s a very powerful place to be. Many people in arguments just focus internally on themselves and don’t provide any clues about how their partner can help. They are waiting for their partner to say the perfect thing. They are waiting to hear something that is going to solve it. But they are not actually helping them or giving any guidance. If you can say to somebody, “Listen, I am just being sensitive right now, but I need you to help me. Just be on my side and help me right now,” what you are really doing is being a great teammate. You are showing them how to help you overcome your feelings. You are making them a partner in getting over this situation. Otherwise, if you alienate them and focus internally, they now look at it as a hopeless case. They go,
Avoid arguments dragging on forever with Linda, the Love Doctor for Get it Magazine, Nova and Ideal Introductions “Argh! Nothing I am saying is working. You are still in this bad mood,” and then they shut down. Instead, say these six simple words… “I need you to help me.” By saying these words, you are making them a teammate in the situation. If you can’t get yourself over an argument in the moment, appeal to your partner. Be vulnerable, tell them that you are feeling sensitive, tell them you are still angry but also tell them that you want them to help you. Agree to disagree. Then you give them a roadmap and that’s something we all want with our partner. It makes you the most beautiful thing you can be in a relationship, which is a genuine team.

GET IT I MONEY
Budgeting for the festive season Ensure your Christmas is a merry one with financial advisor Les McGuire MBA ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial
re we ready to party? The season is upon us where we need to find that new dress, shoes or suit to look the part as we attend those Christmas or New Year’s Eve parties. However, that is only part of the challenge. What presents are we going to buy, how much money are we going to spend? So many things to consider. The fun of Christmas is the art of giving, not necessarily what is given. Last year at my work Christmas party, we played secret Santa. I took on the role of handing the gifts out and was a cheerful Santa at that. I made a bold statement prior to passing out the surprise gifts knowing what I had bought my fiancée (who happened to be my gift victim). I said,“If anyone receives clothing, they need to wear it.” So, I handed out the gifts and my fiancée, on receipt of her gift, refused to put on the clothing. However, my gift from secret Santa happened to be a mankini. Well, didn’t the
iPhones go wild when I had to put it on! I share that message to say be careful what you say and wish for because it may take you by surprise. Secret Santa is a wonderful initiave to set spending limits on gifts, however, make sure you enjoy the celebration of opening the presents together. Being together is the meaning of Christmas. This also means when presents are given within the family group, no one feels worse off with different value gifts. Expensive presents can be given separately if needed. Next thing is Christmas dinner or lunch. To take the pressure off, set the rules for the family and all likely attendees 12 months out. Planning is so important and having each person contribute something means the financial expense of the food and drinks is shared. Set a budget so each family member contributes a small amount of money. Many small contributions add up to a nice pot of money at the end of the year. Having

a family or friend agreement well ahead of time also makes things flow beautifully. Just like you will be, the financial and property markets have been in party mode for the past nine years. They have grown exponentionally, however, what goes up at times will come down. Inflation is steadily increasing in the United States and this is putting pressure on borrowing costs within Australia in turn putting pressure on interest rates. It is important to review your super, investments and lending arrangements to protect against the financial market falls and rising interest rates. Having a diversified range of investment options with protection built in can mean a positive return in certain aspects of the portfolio even in falling markets.Taking the time to have your personal circumstances reviewed may save you thousands of dollars to help fund the upcoming party season. Be wise, be merry and have an amazing party season — ho ho ho!

AforMO’ a
CAUSE
Movember is back and hairier than ever, find out why these two Gold Coast men will be sporting a ‘stache this month with Get it’s Kirstin Cuthbert e love our men. Husbands, partners, fathers, sons, brothers and friends — and we’d hate for them to become one of the statistics. Each year, nearly 700 men die from prostate cancer and more than 500 men die by suicide. That is too many. Focused solely on stopping men dying too young, the Movember Foundation supports the fight against prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide — and raises awareness and funds to combat the numbers. There are various ways to get involved and the most popular is to grow a ‘stache. Whether it’s a traditional style of handlebar, pencil, toothbrush or horseshoe, or some wholeheartedly attempted bumfluff, they all count this month. Two local guys participating are Haydn and Keegan. While their reasons for involvement may differ, they are campaigning for the same goal.
A shave closer to home Haydn Jenkins, 35, doesn’t just know the statistics of prostate cancer and depression. He knows and has witnessed these health issues firsthand in his grandfather, father and himself. So, this month the Burleigh Waters resident will be rocking a moustache like The Undercover Brother or The Regent in support. Prostate cancer first came into Haydn’s life as a child when his grandfather, who he loved dearly, was diagnosed. “I was probably too young to really understand the cancer side of things,” Haydn says. “I know that pop was a massive part of my life growing up and was a big part of his community. He loved the RSL and the bowls club, was active with the Army Cadets, and I loved his beer batter pancake recipe. Losing him had a big impact on our family and left a big hole.” Next was his own father and, while prostate cancer can be hereditary, it still was a shock to Haydn. “He’s been through a bit health wise

already. He’d had a heart attack a while ago and had really changed his lifestyle because of that; he started running marathons and eating a lot healthier, tried to live a little more stress free,” Haydn says. “But it just goes to show that this can affect anyone.” With both his father and grandfather being diagnosed, Hadyn can’t help but have prostate cancer in the back of his mind. “It’s scary thinking that it’s an eventuality... not if but when,” he says. “I guess I try and live a healthy lifestyle, see my doctor regularly about my health and discuss any issues. That's why I’ve been doing Movember too – to raise not only awareness but funds that go towards research into prostate cancer.” Another reason Haydn does Movember is because of his own experience with depression and PTSD after nearly losing both his wife and child during childbirth. “In the months that followed I really grappled with feelings of guilt and inadequacy because I didn’t think I was being strong enough for my family,” he says. Usually pretty social, Haydn became really reserved, retreated from social situations, made up excuses not to go out and ignored messages and calls from mates and even family. “I was just down a hole all the time. I got to a pretty dark point and started thinking, you know, what if my family were better off without me? It was that low for me,” he says. But Haydn says he “had enough sense” to go and see his doctor and get some help. He spoke to a psychologist and it was a real eye-opening experience. “I found out that what I was experiencing is something that a lot of guys go through...
but not a lot of guys talk about,” he says. Haydn is getting back to being himself now and doing what he can for men’s health issues. “Even though it’s a bit of fun, the serious side of Movember is that it helps break down the stigma attached to some issues like mental health. It helps the community realise that it’s alright for men to discuss their health and that it isn’t emasculating to do so,” he says. “As men we’re allowed to be vulnerable, we’re allowed to cry, and we’re allowed to ask for help”. Shaving his beard off at the end of October and growing his moustache, Haydn will be bringing more attention to men’s mental health issues. A mo' for the bros Keegan Hipgrave, 21, loves his mates. As a player for the Gold Coast Titans in the National Rugby League, mateship is important — and being there for his mates is even more important. So, this month he will be rocking his ‘muss’ (as he does yearround) as well as growing out the beard to support Movember. Through injury and long rehabilitation processes Keegan has experienced, he can see how people can develop a negative headspace. While he has been fortunate in his own mental health, he has seen the devastation depression can bring in his mates. “I’ve seen some of my best mates at the forefront of depression,” he says. “These were really confident and outgoing guys that you would’ve never expected were going through such hard times.” “I’ve always been aware of the importance of mental health, but I didn’t realise the devastation such illnesses could cause. It was a real trigger for me when a close mate and someone who I looked up to committed suicide. From then I’ve been so passionate to have the conversation and raise awareness about mental health.” Keegan also takes care of his own mental health, and a big thing for him is being around good people. “My best mates and family are mostly glass half full. This naturally rubs off on myself and I hope to project this onto other people,” he says. “Also, small things that may go unnoticed such as nutrition, physical activity and sleep. As of 8:01pm it is past my bedtime!” Having a chat and getting help are two key messages Keegan will focus on through his Movember efforts. “Someone once told me, ‘Suicide is a permeant solution for a temporary problem.’ Without talking to a councillor, family member or even a mate, negative thoughts can bottle up and become very dangerous,” he says.
“‘Seek help’ is said so often because early intervention actually works.’” He is passionate about spreading the message and getting as many involved as he can this month. “Movember is about a bunch of mates getting together, having a beer and being able to have a conversation about all things concerning mental health,” he says. “It shouldn’t take someone to approach you to have a chat. It’s easy enough to see someone looking down and to ask how they are. Movember are doing a really good job researching and raising awareness, but they can only do that with your support.
So, chip in and remember to ‘Froth Ya Muss.’” Keegan and his mates have an event on the 1st of December at Wildernis Café and Bar, Palm Beach, for their finishing event. Moustaches are up for auction to shave, and there will be giveaways, beers and good times for all to raise money for the great cause.
THE MOVEMBER FOUNDATION’S TOP 5 TIPS FOR MEN’S HEALTH: 1. Make ‘man time’: Stay connected. Your mates are important and spending time with them is good for you. Catch up regularly, check in and make time. 2. Talk: Have conversations, especially about the tough stuff. 3. Move more: Do more of what makes you feel good. 4. Know your numbers: At 50, talk to your doctor about prostate cancer and whether it’s right for you to have a PSA test. If you are of African or Caribbean descent or have a father or brother with prostate cancer, you should be having this conversation at 45. 5. Know thy nuts: Get to know what’s normal and talk to a doctor if anything feels unusual. 37

Doctors encourage men to get checked this November Facts about prostate cancer Dr Jim Jackson, Radiation Oncology Centres (ROC) Radiation Oncologist n Australia, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, and affects one in seven men. While any cancer diagnosis can be extremely distressing, prostate cancer is often treatable and even curable. Prostate cancer has one of the highest survival rates of all cancers if detected early. With highly effective treatments available, men who have been diagnosed have several treatment options. As with all cancers, early detection is key. Unfortunately, a large number of men live with cancer for many years with few or no symptoms. There are a number of factors that may increase your chances of getting prostate cancer, including family history, age and diet. As prostate cancer can cause few symptoms, it’s important to see your GP for regular check-ups. This will usually involve getting a blood test and/or a physical examination. The blood test will measure the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels in your body. Depending on the results you may need further tests to get a diagnosis. For men with prostate cancer, there are a number of treatment pathways to choose from, which will vary for each individual case and depend on the stage and behaviour of the cancer. Patient preference is an important factor when deciding on

The common options include surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, or a combination of these. All treatments come with different side effects, pros and cons. Surgery to remove the prostate is an effective way to treat early stage prostate cancer. Possible side effects could include problems getting erections and urine leaking. Radiation therapy is also an effective way to treat prostate cancer. It often involves daily treatments over a period of several weeks. It is a non-invasive treatment that delivers precise, targeted radiation to the cancer in the prostate and surrounding area. Side effects can include fatigue and difficulty passing urine, however there is less chance of urine leaking. Radiation therapy can affect erections, but this side effect is usually
years later. Radiation treatment is also effective in targeting any cancer that has spread beyond the prostate. I encourage men to ask their doctor for a referral to a radiation oncologist and a urologist, if they have any questions about prostate cancer treatment. Side effects of prostate cancer treatment are often temporary and improve over time. There are also a number of ways your doctor will be able to address temporary side effects. Men should seek all the information available to them and should feel comfortable asking for a second opinion if they are unsure, or would like reassurance. The take home message is: don’t bury your head in the sand. Make sure you get regular health checks and don’t be afraid to ask questions about your options.

GET IT I TRAVEL
Outlander experience The
Follow Sarah Blinco as she travels to one of Scotland’s most evocative ancient sites ild wind howled through the auburn autumnal leaves and across the rolling green hills on either side of the secluded, narrow road that we carefully tread along. My brother Josh happened to be my travel companion this past October, and we both remained quietly stunned by the scenery at each turn: thick woodlands spilling into pretty streams, centuries-old wooden bridges and an odd few sheep tenderly grazing under patchy grey skies. It felt like an adventure, and that’s because it was! An unplanned trip through time somewhere outside of Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands. Rewind an hour, and we were sitting on a local bus which for just a few dollars was ferrying us around the area from Inverness to famous Loch Ness, its castles and ruins. We were on our way to Culloden Battlefield, a vast windswept moor that preserves stories of the Jacobite rising that came to an entirely tragic end here on 16 April 1746. History buffs, fans of Scotland and indeed those of a seductively popular television series called Outlander will be familiar with the locations. Josh and I were discussing our day’s plan when a sweet woman turned around in her seat to chat to us. She asked where we were from, because she recognised our accents and said she had family dotted around Australia. As it happens, in her 70 years young she’s done a lot of travelling and had some great tips to share, one being for

us to get off the beaten track about 30-minutes’ walk from Culloden, to seek an ancient burial ground called Clava Cairns. Full disclosure, I’m one of those Outlander fans eagerly awaiting the return to telly this month of time-travellers Jamie and Claire Fraser. Scotland now offers plenty of ‘Outlander travel experiences’ that attract thousands of enthusiasts seeking out the show’s extraordinary set locations, and Clava Cairns happens to be an integral part of this. While ‘Craigh na Dun’, the mysterious stone circle where Claire falls through time in Scotland to the 1700s in the books and television series does not actually exist, Clava Cairns is understood to be author Diana Gabaldon’s inspiration for the spot. So, willing to walk — because Josh and I have always been into the mystical, mythological and downright creepy (our parents are very proud) — we went in search of this millennia-old site. Scotland offers visitors unparalleled landscapes, legends and folklore, and even our first glimpse of Clava Cairns’ ruins didn’t disappoint. These exceptional 4000-yearold remains of an ancient cemetery are set on a terrace above the River Nairn, and an appropriately atmospheric breeze washed dust and leaves through the ghostly site as we pushed open a rickety fence and made our way inside.
48
There are four cairns (the word ‘cairn’ hailing from the Scottish Gaelic, càrn, meaning a human-made stack of stones) and three standing stone circles here. The three prominent cairns form lines aligned with the sun solstices and show hints of forgotten beliefs carved into the stones. Our friendly local guide on the bus had shared stories of how she and her friend experienced extreme emotions and rushes of energy on touching some of the larger stones in the circles. Josh and I can attest to feeling what can only be described as a very heavy sensation within one of the open-air stone tombs, and admittedly I felt like it wouldn’t be right to take photos inside. A strange tale I’ve read since, is that of a Belgian tourist who claimed to have been cursed after taking a stone away from Clava Cairns. He and his family swiftly encountered such terrible luck including job losses, accidents and ill health, that the disturbed visitor anonymously posted the ‘souvenir’ back to the Inverness tourist centre and requested it be returned to the site. Superstitious or not, this excellent adventure provides an off-road glimpse into the true heart of the Highlands, a rugged, romantic destination where you may very well be standing in 2018; or is it 1743? Just be careful what you touch or wish for.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22
Happy Birthday Scorpio! This month is all about passion and reconnection, which is right up your ally! You are a super powered manifestation magnet as Mars, the planet of desire and action, joins the Sun in Scorpio on the 11th. Be clear about exactly what it is you would like to manifest. Spend time with loved ones and reassess your goals for the coming months to emphasise more of what you crave. Shed off what no longer serves you, clear out your wardrobe, spring clean your home and go and have some fun.
SAGITTARIUS November 22 – December 22 This month has an emphasis on communication for you, Sagittarius. Being the enthusiastic “people person” that you are, communicating with others is not something you have an issue with, however, when it comes to talking about your emotions, things get a little less natural for you. Don’t bypass digging deep this month to gain clarity and direction around issues you may have been dealing with over the last few weeks.
CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20
You are upping the game this month, Capricorn. You may not know exactly how you’re going to get there, but the sky is the limit. You may find yourself assessing attributes of both your personal and professional life and asking the hard questions of where improvements need to be made. If you want that promotion, ask for it! If you need more attention from a loved one, communicate that accordingly. If your job isn’t giving you the opportunity to grow and utilise your potential, look for a new one!
AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19
Good news surrounds Aquarius this month regarding career matters. Expect to let go of feelings of procrastination and take on a new lease of motivation. Aquarians are known for their strong team-working skills and strive to make the world a better place. Utilise these attributes within your career this month and collaborate with workmates to take on new projects or business ventures.
PISCES February 19 – March 20
Uranus is in your sign aligning with Jupiter at the end of the month, presenting you with the
opportunity to explore new horizons. Your creative juices are flowing, and you are feeling ready to find yourself in new adventures. This is a great month to travel and try new things. It is out with the old and in with the new as you reinvent aspects of yourself whilst this year draws to an end.
ARIES March 20 – April 19
Mars, the ruler of Aries, continues its retrograde motion in Taurus this month causing a bit of a slow point when it comes to financial matters. Time to tighten the bootstraps coming up to the festive season. You tend to have the attitude of “if you want something done right, do it yourself” but communication and collaboration with others this month will see you setting yourself up for future success. Your interactions will be received well and your relationships and friendships will benefit.
TAURUS April 20 – May 21
Mood swings? It’s not you, it’s Mars! The holiday season can’t come soon enough for Taurus. Mars remains retrograde in your sign and this has probably left you feeling flat out and overwhelmed. Be mindful of your temper and communicate your need for down time to those around you this month. A bit of well-deserved time out will leave you feeling refreshed and energised ready to take on the festive season.
GEMINI May 21 – June 21
This year you have been focused and driven in all aspects of your career. Next year is all about relationships and dynamic duos. Where will your focus be in between now and then? Your health and wellbeing of course! You are probably feeling life has hit you like a ton of bricks and this is playing on your tendency to sweep things under the rug and move
your attention elsewhere. It’s time for you to focus on your general wellbeing and take care of your emotional and physical needs.
CANCER June 21 – July 22
Money, money, money! This month sees your financial situation flourishing and hard work on the career front paying off. However, emotionally speaking, things may not be so fabulous. Cancer can be one of the most challenging signs — it’s not easy being you, is it, dear crab? There’s no question that you’ve had to be more disciplined and responsible for your feelings and your emotional wellbeing. With Saturn in Cancer since June 2017, you’ve had quite a lesson in self-care this year. Take those lessons into practice and give yourself space to breath.
LEO July 22 – August 23
Leos naturally love a good party. However, this month you may find yourself unusually introverted. You may feel more like curling up on the couch with a good book rather than dressing up in your normal finery and attending the work Christmas party. This month brings an intense energy for you, and spending time at home will give you the space to work through any heightened emotional reactions you may be feeling because of the Sun and Mars in Scorpio.
VIRGO August 23 - September 22
Lighten up fellow Virgos! This year you have been growing in every aspect of your life. From career, to relationships, perhaps even your waistline? Your energy has been very focused on matters external to yourself. Ever the perfectionist this month, you are encouraged to stop sweating the small stuff. Go to the party not because you must make an appearance to show you are committed but rather to have a good time!
LIBRA September 22 – October 23
A month of celebration! You have the Midas touch, everything you touch turns to gold! This month is full of excitement and fun for you Libra. Financial and personal matters are looking up and you are perhaps reaping the rewards of years of hard work and commitment. You will feel very popular this month Libra and you may notice new and old friends contact you out of the blue to request your presence. This is a fantastic month to start new things and make plans for next year.

GET IT I LAST WORD
My week without b!tch!ng Sarah Blinco gets to grips with a naughty habit
t happened during lunch a few weeks ago — I was catching up with a group of friends, and typically, not too far into the time we were together, I noticed us all descend into negative chit chat. I could hear the words spilling out of my own mouth and knew I should rein it in, but I was on a roll. I bid farewell to my mates and headed off to finish work for the afternoon, but something didn’t sit right following the interaction. It dawned on me that with some groups of people, I had fallen into negative patterns. We all need to let off steam now and again, and let’s face it, sometimes we face situations that provoke even the most patient among us. Still, I felt a bad habit brewing, enabled and worsened by certain people and conditions, but also creeping into home life, WhatsApp chats and coffee dates with colleagues. That is not who I want to be. They say 21 days is what it takes to form a new habit. I decided to compromise and swore off b!tch!ng for one working week. I declared my intention to my partner Cooper, and at 9am the next day to Lisa, the first work-pal I saw. ‘No negative talk for a week!’ I shared. She smiled sweetly and encouraged me to pursue it.‘Excellent!’. Within half an hour we were discussing how irritating Riverdale is and how we’re shocked it scores so many television award nominations. b!tch b!tch b!tch. Oops. (sorry Riverdale fans… but honestly!) Onwards, it’s never too late to start fresh. I made it to 3pm determined to stay sensible during a meeting I was set to have with a project group I’m part of. All good, until one of the team made a dramatic entrance announcing he had gossip. I love gossip! And I failed on day one. Four days to go, and in my diary was a meeting with a fabulous friend of mine, Tina. We often collaborate, and the reality of our ‘one hour’ slots is 45 minutes gossip, 15 minutes work (we are very efficient). There was giggling, joking and b!tch!ng. As we entered our 35th minute, I told her that I was trying to drop my negative habit and feeling better about myself, I talked us up towards positive perspectives. November 2018
Wednesday: mid-point hump day, tough. Instead of engaging with my known triggers, I intentionally surrounded myself with optimistic affirmations and kept an eye on @thedogist Instagram Stories to maintain high spirits. If you’re not familiar with The Dogist, go check them out — thank me later. By Thursday I found I was catching myself in the act, but still making excuses for my bad behaviour. Two of my favourite people tried to explain that there is a difference between ‘b!tch!ing’ and ‘updating’, particularly if one of them has been away and missed out on ‘news’. I’m not sure it works like that, but we were being mindful of our words and actions, and that’s progress.
They say 21 days is what it takes to form a new habit. I decided to compromise and swore off b!tch!ng for one working week. As the sun rose on FriYay, I wondered if I should test the rubberband-on-wrist strategy, to be snapped as a reminder if I caught myself mid-naughty habit; but I granted myself a reprieve. I realised the experiment had been successful — pain free, even — because while I completely failed on the no-gossip, no-b!tch!ng front, I was now fully aware of the behaviour I am changing for the better. This is good, because I much prefer the girl who contributes knowledge, kindness and wisdom to conversations. If not those things, good cheer, at least. I can’t say that you won’t find me moaning about certain television shows (don’t get me started on Love Island), but nobody’s perfect.
