GET IT I EDITOR LETTER

from the editor LAUREN PARIS

elcome to the October issue of Get It magazine – the Gold Coast’s favourite for all things lifestyle, fashion, business and events! Hands up if you’re someone who always has something on the go. You’re just SO busy? Me too! For many of us, the daily juggle - regardless of our circumstances - can be tough but getting the right balance is crucial according to Psychologist Alison Hill, who tells us why we need to snap out of this ‘constantly busy’ mindset. Every day, most of us can get caught up thinking how we could have done things better – made more time to exercise, ticked more things off the to-do list, worked harder, played more with our kids, made healthier food choices or more. Procrastination, self-doubt and busyness can each play a part. But it’s time to banish the busyness. Read more on page 14. This issue we have eco living educator Laura Trotta discussing why breaking up with plastic is something we should all be paying more attention to. She provides tips on how we can reduce the use of plastics in our home for good. As well as women who are kicking goals in their career, health and life, we feature some shining examples of strength this issue. We chatted to surfing superstar Sally Fitzgibbons about her latest business venture and discover her tips for maintaining strength in both her career and fitness. We also feature fascinating Southport mum of three Amanda Barlow who, as well as being a fitness fanatic - having participated in more than 44 marathons around the world – has had a successful 30-year career as a wellsite geologist – a job that involves isolation, dedication and trying circumstances. Amanda prepared for many of her marathons by running laps around a helipad when she was a FIFO at offshore locations. Amazing! You can read more about her on page 16. Former Olympic medal winner and Gold Coast local Melanie Wright (nee Schlanger) confesses how her biggest life failures have actually helped her in life. This is a really great lesson for many of us. If you know of an inspiring or strong person, or a topic you’d like us to cover, I’d love to hear from you! Don’t forget to enter our fab giveaways (details page 11)! Have a fabulous month!

GET TO THE POINT

Is he no good? Get it's Anna Davies dishes some important dating advice to the ladies.

Short Hair Cut & Colour Specialist

et me paint a scene. One of your girlfriends has got a new man and, according to her, the sun shines out of his behind and his farts smell like peppermint. She’s enchanted to the point of nausea. You think, “finally, I’ll never have to listen to her complain about men again". Oh how foolish you are. I don’t know about you, but even if the guy’s farts do genuinely smell of peppermint, my friends still require me to take on the role of agony aunt stroke soothsayer. For some reason I am now expected to hold the secrets of the universe in my handbag. Me, the same person who glued their eye together trying to apply fake lashes. Despite my blatant incompetence, after many years in the role of the part time agony aunt, I have come up with four red flags that indicate a guy needs to be spring cleaned the hell out of your life. If you hear your friend hint to any of these traits, tell her to take a good hard look at her man. After all, if the sun is shining out of his behind, who knows what’s coming out of his mouth? ALL TALK NO ACTION I have a theory; the earlier a man frequently refers to you as ‘babe’, the less he must be trusted. It’s all smoke and mirrors; “Yeah babe, we’ll go on a trip this weekend” or "Yeah babe, I’d love to meet your friends, babe”. Babe, if he says he’ll do something, but never follows through with it, stop being his babe.

LAZY, LATE AND LACKADAISICAL If you find yourself complaining about always having to make the effort to go see him, or him always being late, or even worse, him not appreciating you putting up with either of these things, he’s probably bad news. Okay, so maybe he doesn’t have a car, or maybe his cat really did need that emergency eye-bath, but the least he can do is say thank you. ANSWERS QUESTIONS LIKE A POLITICIAN You know what I mean, you ask a simple question like “What did you get up to today?” and your boyfriend suddenly turns into Tony Abbott, just nodding in silence. You have two explanations; he’s either a terrible conversationalist, or trying to hide something. Either way, it doesn’t look good. GUT FEELING Sometimes something just doesn’t feel right. I’m not saying that gut instincts always mean that your man is bad news, but take a look at why you feel unsure. Is it something he’s said or done? If not, is this feeling of uncertainty something you can overcome? If the feeling sticks around, maybe it’s just not the right relationship for you. It’s better to be single and sure of your situation, than in a relationship riddled with doubts. Do any of these points sound familiar? I may have glued my eye together, but even I can see you might have an issue. 9

breaking the gla

Two leading ladies who have risen to key leadership roles in sport recently discussed the challenges many women face in 'levelling the playing field' and offer their top tips. I’m the person I am because I failed.” This is the surprising confession made by World Champion, dual Olympian and five-time Olympic medallist, Melanie Wright (nee Schlanger) – who lives and studies on the Gold Coast. The athlete has reached great heights during her swimming career – winning one gold and two silver medals at the London Olympics, plus a fighting fourth in the 100m freestyle final. She is now studying to become a doctor - commenced studying medicine at Bond University earlier this year - and has already completed Bachelor of Biomedical Science and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA). According to Melanie, 30, people need to hear about and understand failure more. “I think it’s one of those lessons that goes missing. It comes along and people feel really bad they don’t really take the opportunity to make themselves better and to learn those lessons. I think failure, in general, teaches you to be resilient if you’re willing to keep going. That just comes along with failure. [And] all the other things that go along with it,” Melanie told the audience at the Bond University Women’s Network’s annual 'Speak Up Forum' recently. “It’s really up to you to decide if you’re going to make that disappointment into something better. I think that’s something that is lost on a lot of people, athletes included. It took me a really really long time to come back from [not being able to sleep prior to a big race and not achieving the desired outcome] and realise failure was not necessarily something that was a bad thing. That’s when I October 2016

really started to succeed a lot more. If you can embrace that fact, and be willing to fail, you’re more likely to push yourself and to take those risks. And, you’re more than likely to find the things that are really important to you and to go for it.” Bond University Assistant Professor Dr Lisa Gowthorp who was the event MC said the forum was a great opportunity to recognise the challenges many women face in levelling the playing field' in a range of industries. Also speaking at the event was Caitlin Sippel who discussed the challenges and successes she has faced working in sports management. Since graduating from Bond University four years ago, Caitlin has been working in sports management as Hockey Queensland's program manager, where she has led the delivery of a competition management system for all hockey associations and clubs throughout Queensland, along with Hockey Australia's first national online registration database. “As Mel, and so many women before her have shown, women take gold in sport, so why can’t we take gold in the office too? I believe it is a very simple concept – we can choose to be bound by the glass ceiling or we can smash right through it. I prefer the latter and it is that attitude and tenacity that has helped me get to

I think failure, in general, teaches you to be resilient if you’re willing to keep going. 10

this point,” Caitlin says. “[Growing up] not for one moment was I ever deterred from choosing sport because the industry is a so-called ‘man’s world’. Bring it on. If we are truly going to level the playing field, it is about each of us believing that we have something to offer in the first place and having the drive and confidence to go after what we want”. Life has never been more hectic for working women, Caitlin says. “We don’t just want to participate; we want to be the best we can, in everything we do. And that is extremely difficult when we are fighting every day to be given the same opportunities as our male counterparts.Yes, sport has always traditionally been tagged as a male dominated arena where women couldn’t prosper, but even in the four short years I have spent in the industry, that is changing and I am so proud to be part of that change. Queensland is the only state hockey governing body in Australia to have ever had a female CEO – and we have had two in a row which is a remarkable achievement for any sport”. “I have been extremely lucky in my career so far to have had two strong female leaders who have mentored and encouraged me to grow and who have shown me that it is possible to break through the glass ceiling placed over women in this industry. These ladies have been my greatest asset. They have given me the opportunity to show my strengths, and also challenged me to improve my weaknesses. They have allowed me to use my initiative and vision to lead change within hockey in Queensland.”

GET IT I GENERAL STORY

LIVING AN ECO-FRIENDLY LIFE Break-up with plastic in your home

These simple steps, to help you cut out plastic use in your home, will help reduce your household’s waste and may improve your family’s health and wellbeing, writes Laura Trotta here’s no denying the convenience and usefulness of plastics. We use them to carry, store and prepare food for our families. We use them to entertain our kids (heelllooo Lego in foot!). We even put them on our faces and in our mouths (well, you are if you’re using a facewash or toothpaste with microbeads!). In fact, everywhere we look we see plastics; they’re in phones, computers, chairs, suitcases, clothing, nappies, kitchen utensils, combs, toothbrushes, credit cards, cars... the list goes on. Plastics sure are handy, but given they’ve been linked with obesity, early adolescence, infertility and even cancer, not to mention the fact they take hundreds of years, if ever, to break down in our environment, it makes sense to use them in moderation. Because plastics have literally inundated our lives it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the task of reducing them in your home. For this reason, just focus on cutting down your use of plastic in one area at a time and move on to the next stage when you’re ready. If you’re keen to reduce your exposure to toxins including those found in plastics, not to mention reduce or even eliminate plastics from your household’s waste stream, here are seven easy ways to get started.

3 4 5 6

Eat More Real Food When you eat a diet rich in real foods you break up with processed food, and when you break up with processed foods you drastically reduce the amount of plastic you consume. Learning to cook with real foods is quite possibly the number one action you can take to improve your health and the health of our planet.

7

1 2

Buy Loose Produce When out and about shopping for your fresh produce and wholefoods, choose loose produce. This may involve switching your shopping from supermarkets to farmers markets or organic stores, where produce is available in bulk rather than individually wrapped on plastic trays.

October 2016

Say NO to Plastic Bags and Containers Buy quality, reusable bags for shopping such as those made from jute and canvas. This includes using reusable produce bags to carry your loose fresh produce. Many organic stores and delis will also happily weigh produce in your own reusable container too. Use a Reusable Stainless Steel or Glass Water Bottle Rather than purchasing plastic bottled water, invest in a quality glass or stainless steel reusable water bottle and fill with tap, rain or filtered tap water. Use a Reusable Coffee Cup Did you know that Australians use more than 500 million disposable coffee cups a year? If you regularly grab a coffee or tea to go, invest in a quality reusable coffee mug. Even if the single-use cups in your favourite café are of the paper variety, most of these are sprayed with a polyethylene coating, which means they can’t be recycled anyway. Switch to Biodegradable Coffee Pods If you thought our take away coffee cup habit was destructive, listen to this... each day Australians consume around 3 million coffee pods in their home espresso machines! The majority of these are made from plastic or aluminium which don’t break down in the environment. If you have a coffee machine that uses individual pods, make the switch to coffee in biodegradable pods.

Ditch the Plastic Straw Every day 6 billion plastic straws are used worldwide. If you or your children prefer to drink from a straw, invest in a reusable stainless steel straw rather than buying single-use plastic straws. Choosing a conveyancer Tips for ensuring your property transactions go as smoothly as possible.

uying a property, either as your own home or as an investment property can be an exciting time. It could be your first home or the dream home you have always wanted. As a property investor, buying property is a means of achieving steady income through rental returns and the potential for significant capital gains in the long term. If you are selling a property you need to ensure that contracts are drawn up correctly and that the sale process happens smoothly and in the prescribed time, particularly if you are in a situation where the purchase of another property is contingent on the sale of yours. Whether you are buying or selling a home, an apartment, a vacant block, strata title, commercial real estate or a rural property, it is important to get the best legal conveyancing support at all stages of the transactions. Here are six tips for choosing a conveyancer: 1) Don’t just choose the cheapest. Your property sale might be the single largest financial transaction you ever carry out. And when the purchase of one property is connected to the sale of another, the last thing you need is for something to go wrong with the paperwork. Make sure you choose someone who is highly experienced in the legal aspects of a wide range of property transactions. 2) Don’t be pressured into using your real estate agent’s suggested conveyancer. You have the freedom to choose any conveyancer you like to manage your property transactions. Just because your agent has given you a conveyancer’s contact details, it doesn’t necessarily make them the best conveyancer for your situation. 3) Choose someone local to your area. A local, experienced legal conveyancer can provide insights and local knowledge that someone outside your area cannot. 4) Ask for testimonials. Don’t be afraid to ask for testimonials when you are choosing a conveyancer. If they have done a good job for previous clients, these should be easy to obtain. 5) Costs. Before signing up with a conveyancer, make sure you ask for an itemised list of all costs that are involved. Also, check if they have a fixed price guarantee that covers any other matters that might arise. 6) Customer service. What was your first impression when you contacted the conveyancer? Were they friendly and helpful? How were you treated when you answered the phone, or when you asked them questions? Were you made to feel welcome? If so, then it’s more likely that your whole conveyancing experience with them will go well too. We can help Cornerstone Law Offices have extensive experience with conveyancing matters and can offer legal advice in regards to real estate contract law, advice for first home buyers, as well as liaising with financial institutions to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible. GET IT I SUCCESS

So busy?

Time to banish the busyness The traditional ‘9 to 5’ working hours no longer exist. We’re now plugged in to our devices 24/7, and are losing sight of ourselves whilst drowning in the doing. Psychologist Alison Hill tells Get It editor Lauren Paris about her new book Stand Out; a practical guide to getting clear on what matters and stop doing the stuff that just doesn’t.

ell us about your link to the Gold Coast: I'm based at Currumbin at the start of the Currumbin Valley, which is a beautiful piece of the world. I've lived there for six years although grew up just south of the border so have close ties to the area. It's seriously the best place in the world. When/why/how did you write this book? I wrote this book because our health and happiness is being heavily impacted by the relentless change environments we find ourselves in. My work with women in leadership roles had me connect with women who were losing sight of themselves. It was also my personal experience. So I wanted to research ways to have the courage to reconnect with what matters. Is ‘busyness’ something you have had trouble/experience with? Absolutely. I think I'm not alone in getting caught up in the overwhelm that comes amongst the busyness. My research has uncovered that it's more about having the permission to say 'no' and focus on values and progress. Why do you believe it is time to reclaim our health, happiness and sanity; even amongst the busyness? The reality is that busy is not going away. Waiting for calm is useless hope. The solution to do less is not always practical. So to come back to our health, happiness and sanity has to happen while life is happening around us. There are countless examples of people who are busy and energised. So coming back to what matters to you, saying 'no' to what doesn't, and letting go of 'shoulds' is key. How does Stand Out empower readers? It's real, practical and relevant in our busy world. The book empowers readers to live life on their own terms, not what others are doing, not what they 'should' do, and to let go of the crap mindsets that are holding

October October 2016 2016

us back. It brings in science of psychology to understand what holds us back and to take charge of stepping forward. What are some of the tools, tips and strategies needed to deal with being busy and to start getting ahead? 1. GET IT I COVER FEATURE

WITH STRENGTH AND DETERMINATION,

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE Get It’s Lauren Paris talks to two inspirational ladies – champion surfer Sally Fitzgibbons and Gold Coast local Amanda Barlow – who are kicking goals in their lives and careers outhport local Amanda Barlow is proof that with courage and determination, anything is possible. As a Wellsite Geologist – with a successful career spanning over 30 years that includes working offshore in dangerous conditions for months at a time – the 56-year-old mother of three is also a recreational marathon runner and has run over 40 marathons in 15 different countries, most recently in Moscow last month. Amanda’s list of marathons also includes the ill-fated 2013 Boston Marathon where she was only 1km from crossing the finish line when the bombs exploded. Amanda’s fascinating experiences have been outlined in her new selfpublished book “An Inconvenient Life: My Unconventional Career as a Wellsite Geologist”. Through working with some of the biggest resource companies in the world, including Woodside Energy and BHP Billiton, Amanda has worked within the most

October 2016

stringent safety cultures in the industry. “A wellsite geologist is a geologist who works and lives at the well location and oversees the drilling of the well as it’s being drilled. I’m the primary geological data collector and relay all drilling and geology data to the geology team based in town,” Amanda says. “I can remember in Grade 4 doing a project on the Geological Time Scale and already knowing that I wanted to be a geologist. I would have had no idea back then what a geologist actually does for a living but all I knew was that I was fascinated by the earth and the rocks that covered it. Nearly 50 years later I still love the hands-on geology and that’s why I prefer to be working ‘in the field’ rather than in an office in town looking at drill hole results on paper reports instead of real rocks. Being the first person to see the drilled samples in a multi-million dollar drilling campaign still gets me excited even after 30 years of working around drilling rigs.”

16

Through resource industry busts and booms and a career hiatus taken to raise three children, Amanda’s resilience and resourcefulness has seen her transition from a hard rock geologist working on base metal drilling programs to a Wellsite Geologist in the coal seam gas industry and then in offshore oil and gas drilling programs. She says working in remote areas of the world and spending long periods of time away from family and friends can be challenging for many. “While there is no doubt about the financial benefits, there are many sacrifices to be made by people who choose to live the fly in fly out lifestyle,” Amanda says. “Working 12+ hour days for seven days a week, weeks at a time in a confined and dangerous area and with strict rules that have to be adhered to or you’ll find yourself on the next chopper home, definitely isn’t for everyone”.

World Surf League Professional surfer Sally Fitzgibbons, 25, has reached great career heights thanks to dedication and hard work. She is now sharing her secrets, as one surfing’s most finely-tuned athletes, via her very own fitness app.

A break from work has given Amanda a chance to reflect on her 30+ years in the resource industry and then write a book about it. “I hope reading it will inspire others to review their career and decide if it’s worth fighting for also,” she says. Amanda prepared for her dozens of international marathons by training on a treadmill or by running laps around a helipad while she was away working as a FIFO. These days, she enjoys jogging along Marine Parade, Southport. “Living across the road from the Broadwater Parklands means I have the best jogging path in the world at my doorstep,” she says. Amanda has completed marathons on all seven continents, earning her an entry into the Seven Continents Marathon Club. Her marathons accomplishments include: London and Gold Coast 2009, Barcelona and Marine Corps Marathon (Washington DC) 2011, Kilimanjaro Marathon (Tanzania), Great Wall Marathon (China), Inca Trail Marathon (Peru), and finally the Antarctic Ice Marathon in 2012. Please describe your daily wellness regime: My training starts before the sun gets up, this is my favourite time of day. I’ll leave no stone unturned whether that’s running the trails, biking, swimming, building strength in the gym or fine tuning my approach on the waves.Training is never on and off in the sport of surfing - you always have to be ready. I like to keep things simple with my diet and stick to fruit, vegies and quality protein. Tips on maintaining strength in career and fitness? I believe that maintaining strength is maintaining confidence and belief in yourself. Your toughest opponent to overcome is YOURSELF.The quest of becoming mentally and physically strong doesn’t have a start and finish line. You are consistently evolving and it’s about always paying attention to the balance in your life. You should always have the willingness to ask yourself the tough questions and take constructive criticism in your stride. Apply what you feel is right for YOU. Work hard, dream big, never give up and be KIND to yourself! How have you managed to maintain career stability? Creating an awesome balance in my life has allowed me to have stability. I’m so proud of what we are creating at Fitzgibbons International. Allowing my visions to come to life and also chase my competitive endeavours of becoming World Champion with an amazing team is super fulfilling. Who are the most influential people in your life and why? My journey and milestones achieved wouldn’t be special without the most special people. I can’t thank or appreciate my Mum and Dad enough, what they have done in bringing my three brothers and I up and allowing me to chase my crazy dreams as a youngster and still to this day. My journey over the past four years has also been beyond special after meeting my fiancé Trent and getting engaged. It is incredible to be there for one another through all the ups and downs and so amazing to share in each other’s journeys. My loved ones teach, love and care for me every single day and it gives me so much strength and confidence to go out into the world and tackle everything head on. My team at Fitzgibbons International also influence and inspire me every day.Their work ethic and passion for what we are creating as a business is so infectious and I love being in our office environment. Please tell us a little about the Train Like Sally program: Train Like Sally is a real passion project of mine. Creating the App was my means of giving back to all the people that take the time out to follow and support me on my surfing journey around the world and my quest of becoming World Champion. I am so passionate about my training on and off my surfboard and I know everyone can’t have access to the beautiful sport of surfing but they can have a go at creating their regular exercise routine no matter where they are and that’s something I could connect with and share my love

of exercise. I’m super excited with the way Train Like Sally has come together and taken shape. It truly has something for everyone no matter what fitness level you are or where you live and it is super cool to be heading on the road to start connecting with Train Like Sally community. GET IT I MAKE UP

Playing up your strengths Even though it is hard for some of us to compliment ourselves when looking in the mirror, we all have something great. Knowing what this is and playing it up is the only way to put your best asset forward, writes hairstylist and make-up artist Amanda Higl he world of make-up is both confronting and baffling especially for those who are not so make-up savvy. So take a long hard look at yourself, even if you think there is nothing there, pick the best of what you think out of the bad bunch of features and go with it! Trust me, only you think it's all bad, everyone else probably thinks you are beautiful anyway. Every week, day in day out, I have ladies who - once I am done with their make-up cannot believe who they see when looking in the mirror. I come across so many ladies who don't wear much make-up at all and the odd person who can't wait for me to get going and make them up. However, there is one common surprise and that is how much you can either change or enhance feature with the right make-up and with make-up in the right places. I am a huge fan of contouring and I never give a professional make-up service

without doing it. Most is subtle and of course for those who love it we can really do some shaping. Chisel your face! This is a must - even a light amount of contouring if you don't want to be too adventurous. This is five kilos off in five sets of strokes! Keep it simple. Choose a foundation two shades darker than your base or use a bronzer. Make a fish face - this is where you use your first set strokes, in the hollows under your cheeks dust on with a brush. Two more stroke sets on the temples, two more stroke sets just under the jawline, two more stroke sets down each side of your nose and the final winner: a light blend at your hair line near your forehead, especially if you are quite brown or have a larger forehead. Eyes: We all have them and most of us have pretty nice ones. Make sure your colours are complementary - if you go with warm tones you can't really go wrong. Use an eye

shadow as your eyeliner if you are afraid of the real deal. Go all the way along the lash line as if you were colouring the very base of your actual eyelashes and flick the brush on the inner corners of your eye too, as it will complete the shape. Shading on the bottom lash line will keep small eyes interesting. Lips: If you have luscious lips, use them! If not, that's no problem; go for a nude gloss or the trusty paw paw. To accentuate the top lip run a little highlighter on the top lip line and cupid’s bow for an instant wow! These quick fix tricks on your facial strengths will take you anywhere. Enjoy! amandahiglhairandmakeup.com.au

Is hair loss driving you crazy? Discover the secret to having luscious locks. he loss of hair through alopecia, trichotillomania, hair breakage and diffused hair loss can have a huge impact on a woman’s self-esteem. Deanna Hall, founder and creative director of Osk 1 Hair Institute is a respected hair artist who specialises in helping women who suffer from hair loss and helps her clients experience a return of self-esteem, knowing their hair is demanding attention for all the right reasons. According to Deanna women can lose, or have thinning hair, at any age and for a variety of reasons. Medication, illness, chemicals and hormones have the potential to stop hair from forming properly. If you are looking for length, thickness, vitality and shine, Deanna says Osk 1 is the place to go. Specialising in 100 per cent human hair extensions, Osk 1 works in conjunction with the number one worldwide Hair Extension System Great Lengths. “Our technique in application, cutting and styling of human hair extensions has been perfected over more than 30 years of experience in the industry,” says Deanna. “We pride ourselves in natural looking extensions, thorough consultations,

individualised placement techniques and nondamaging stress free removal methods.” With experience in European and American techniques, Osk 1 has developed a superior system of applying, cutting and styling that provides the client with the most amazing invisible, natural looking head of extensions, according to Deanna. “Osk 1’s gentle system works without damage to your own hair. It will not tangle and can be coloured and cut, making it look and feel very much like your own hair,” Deanna says. “Not everyone was born with fabulously thick hair. Osk 1 - with the assistance of Great Lengths - can help women with fine hair, to create the thickness and volume they have always wanted in just a few hours. For wavy or unruly hair, our extensions enrobe your own hair making it mimic the extension hair, which helps to tame your hair.” Extensions are a fabulous option for weddings, events and to experiment with colour or style, such as a fringe, and after surgery to cover scarring or receding hairlines. One entrepreneur, who has regular social and public commitments, said that in the time she has been relying on hair extensions, Osk 1 has proven to be the best. 21

“I have had extensions for over 10 years and have to say these are the best. It is very rare to find a hairdresser that is fantastic at everything – colour, extensions, cutting and styling. Could not recommend Osk 1 highly enough!” Osk 1 Hair Institute P: 5526 2100 osk1.com or visit Osk 1 Salon on Facebook. October 2016

Want to Lose Weight? Lift Weights! If you are struggling to lose weight and change your body shape it may be because you aren't lifting weights effectively according to Jeff Osborne, owner of Vision Personal Training in Bundall. o many people are surprised when they come to see me and I advise them that one of the most effective things you can do to lose weight is to lift weights. There are a few reasons why, but first let’s address why many people do not. One of the most common things I get is that women don't want to gain too much muscle or look bulky. For a person without high levels of testosterone, to put on muscle is amazingly difficult. It is even difficult for people with high levels. What is more likely to happen is that the muscle you have is going to tone up and give you better shape. What most people don't know is that the one thing that actually raises your metabolism significantly is weight training. The surprising thing is it can raise it for five days while cardio may only last 12 hours! For most people, even if you are not sore, recovery from a weights session is at minimum 72 hours, for most recovery peaks at 72 hours which means you have another 72 hours of recovery where your metabolism is still elevated. That means you will be burning more fat in your sleep. How good is that? Not strength training can drop your metabolism by five per cent a decade according to researcher Dr Wescott. Just 1.5kg in more active muscle tissue means you can eat 15 per cent more calories (or get 15 per cent better weight loss results, your choice there). Light weights and high reps don't work! One of the other mistakes many people make is they have been sold this myth of high reps for toning. Other than making your muscles burn, you are not really achieving much with that kind of strength training. That burn is just lactic acid accumulating and you aren't really getting stronger or burning fat. When you lift weights it needs to be short and heavy (for you) to be effective. There aren't 200 exercises that you need to do, only 3-5. But when you do them well, with great technique and loaded correctly the results you get are amazing. When it comes to the magic fountain of youth, lifting heavy weights may be the secret ingredient. One of our clients, Dawn, started with us at 80 and not only has she lost more than 10kg, she is fitter, faster and much stronger and that has improved her quality of life massively. Here are some of the amazing benefits of lifting heavy things: • Increase bone mineral density. Up to 13 per cent in just six months. Prevent osteoporosis. • Improve glucose metabolism. As high as a 23 per cent increase. Stop diabetes. • Increase gastrointestinal transit time. A 56 per cent increase means lower risk of colon cancer. • Reduce your blood pressure. Reduce your risk of heart attack. • Improve blood lipids. Better fat burning and lower fat storage. • Reduce back pain. The stronger you are the less likely you are to have this injury. • Reduce arthritis pain. Stronger joints ache less. October 2016

Slow the ageing process. As we get older a big contributor to a reduction in independence is the lack of strength. Poor balance, slower reflexes and loss of strength are all improved when you lift weights. Do your body a favour, lift weights at least once a week, twice if you can. It is the best bang for your buck when it comes to weight loss and in as little as 20 minutes you can work your whole body and burn more fat for the next few days. Sounds pretty good to me. Well balanced heels Chiropractor Karen Hall from The Medical Sanctuary says high heels and dizziness can be cause for concern. ave you ever not enjoyed your high heels because you felt a bit “wobbly” in them? Or even avoided them because you felt unsafe? This could be a balance issue and is really worth tackling now. Even if you are one of the lucky ones who can run in heels, balance maintenance is important to keep you elegantly upright. Your sense of balance comes in a large part from your vestibular system. The vestibular system is located in the inner ear and contains fluids, crystals and other structures that react to gravity and movement. When this all doesn’t work well our brain gets confused about where we are in time and space and a common result of this is dizziness. High heels and dizziness are definitely not a good mix. The other major contributor to balance is proprioception. This is basically a two way communication between your body and your brain allowing you to adapt fast and stay safe. In this instance you need nice strong feet and ankles which should be able to adapt to uneven terrain and even high heels relatively easily. But think back to the last time you encountered

Being well balanced and strong will help you kick up your heels with delight. cracked pavement or even kid’s toys etc. left lying around the house. Did you nearly twist an ankle or even fall? Here are some easy suggestions to get these two systems working better to improve your balance. First drink an appropriate amount of water for your size and daily activity level. Adequate hydration has been scientifically proven to help your brain work better. Next; take some time out to walk barefoot. A sandy beach or lush grass can be great places for this. The textures and sensations from this activity send a huge amount of information from your feet and ankles to your brain. Doing this regularly helps your brain learn and adapt

to changeable surfaces and situations. This is using neural plasticity because this increased information from your feet can then excite your brain enough to increase output to the nerves and muscles in your legs and feet, helping them to cope better with any challenges you throw at them. These suggestions are a good starting point to help improve balance but chiropractic assessment, treatment and rehabilitation can be individually tailored to your personal needs. Chiropractors are experts in helping your body function optimally. Being well balanced and strong will help you kick up your heels with delight. medsan.com.au

Single sided deafness eased by new advances Grant Collins, Principal Audiologist at Clarity Hearing Solutions discusses the impact of losing hearing in one ear. requently I come across people who have totally lost the hearing in one ear and still have normal hearing in the other ear. This is called single sided deafness or SSD. Many have been told that there is nothing that can be done and to just live with it and learn to adapt. What a lot of people don’t realise is that to lose the hearing in just one ear is extremely debilitating. In a way it is worse than losing hearing in both ears. First of all you lose all sense of determining which way a sound is coming from. We rely on volume differences between our ears to localise sound. For example a sound coming from the left side is louder in the left ear than the right so we know to look that way. Without the second ear we have no idea which direction sounds come from. Secondly, and probably most importantly, it is nearly impossible to have a conversation in background noise as you require two ears to function when competing sounds are present. Although several years ago there was little that could be done, we now have a lot more options to assist with these difficulties. Some SSD patients may well be suitable for a Cochlear implant, in which case we can restore hearing that was lost. Restoring hearing should provide the most benefit

as we are providing balance to the hearing once again. Surprisingly, this option was in the past discouraged as it was thought that Cochlear implant technology could not accurately reproduce normal hearing. Or at least not enough for the better ear to adjust to the sound difference. Recent advances in implant technology means new processors are now able to more closely match normal hearing. But probably the biggest factor is that our understanding of the plasticity (adaptiveness) of the brain has changed and we realise the brain can quickly adapt to changes no matter at what age this occurs. Success rates for implanting single sided deafness are now very high and all our SSD patients have had very successful outcomes. Besides Cochlear implants there are also other alternative devices to assist. A hearing device called a Bluetooth CROS for instance works by wearing a discreet hearing aid in each ear. The hearing aid in the dead ear, called a transmitter, picks up all of the sounds from the poor side and transfers by a Bluetooth signal to the hearing aid in the good ear. Because these devices do not block up the ear the hearing in the good ear is still being used and it is then supplemented with the hearing aid

receiving the information from the dead side. An advantage of the Bluetooth CROS device is that you are able to pair it with other devices such as the TV allowing you to hear the it clearly at a comfortable level without affecting the volume for others. Bluetooth lapel microphones can also be paired with the hearing aid. You use these microphones in noisy environments or around the house and they’ll pick up the voice of the person wearing the microphone and transmit it up to 20 metres to the hearing aid. Single-sided deafness now has treatment solution options and there is no need to suffer from what can be a most debilitating hearing loss. P:1300 252 748 clarityhearingsolutions.com.au

Can’t understand the TV? Are people mumbling? Sometimes it can sound like people are mumbling or, no matter how much you turn up the TV, you still can’t understand what’s being said. But you might be able to hear some sounds perfectly such as a car coming down the road before anyone else can! This is a very common complaint and can be caused by noise-induced hearing loss. Many people are exposed to dangerous levels of noise throughout their lives. This begins to catch up with us and can result in the start of a high

Call 1300 252 748 or 3366 7888

That meant hearing aids amplified all noises, including background noise. They had an unnatural sound quality and caused your own voice to echo and made chewing noises loud. Thankfully there are now openfit hearing aids which alleviate most of the previous issues associated with treating industrial deafness. These new tiny, barely visible devices leave the ear open allowing the use of good hearing in low pitched sounds, and focusing on speech sounds in high pitched areas.

If adjusted and fitted properly for your hearing loss the result is an entirely natural sound quality, no excessive background noise, and no loud chewing or voice echoes. If you, or someone you know suffers from these symptoms phone Clarity Hearing Solutions today to discuss the solutions available.

pitched hearing loss, or “industrial deafness”. Our hearing continues to decline as we get older until more pitches are effected and the severity increases. Early warning signs include ringing sounds in the ears (tinnitus), difficulty hearing in background noise, increasing television volume, and difficulty hearing female or children’s voices. It was hard to treat industrial deafness as standard hearing aids blocked the ear and prevented the use of any remaining good hearing.

Bruce Lynton Jaguar

Girl torque Get It publisher Leanne Hart gets into gear and test drives the All-New F-PACE from Bruce Lynton Jaguar.

hen you think of Jaguar, you think prestige. You also think luxury, style and comfort. Well, the AllNew Jaguar F-Pace ticks all of those boxes. I recently had the pleasure of driving this exquisite motor vehicle for a few days and to say I was impressed would be an understatement. It’s the first of its kind in the Jaguar fleet and is bound to take the market by storm. Touted as the most practical Jaguar sports car, this first ever Jaguar SUV combines maximum driving exhilaration with efficiency. The engine is so quiet it’s difficult to believe it’s a diesel. Quick off the mark and delightful to drive, it will make all of your friends green with envy. In fact, I had a number of people want to take a look inside while I was parked at a popular local centre and they were duly impressed with the interior styling and features. The front and rear cameras make small space manoeuvres a breeze, and the LED headlights are just plain sexy. Aside from its dynamic looks, this vehicle has many must-have features. Plenty of room in the rear compartment makes it perfect for the family that needs the extra space and the fact you don’t have to get out of the car to open it, is a definite bonus for school drop offs. Ample head and leg room in the back is also a feature many cars of this calibre lack, and of course the sunroof gives you the chance to just ‘show off’. All in all, the F-Pace ticks all the right boxes. I loved it! brucelyntoncars.com P 07 5655 2222 October 2016

GET IT I LAST WORD

STRENGTH

training More than just a workout at the gym, Elizabeth Campbell is talking about building strength in all areas of your life. hat doesn’t kill you makes your stronger.’ Famous last words Kelly Clarkson. At the time it will feel like you’re dying, struggling to breath, and can barely pick yourself up off the floor – and that’s just a session with your PT. Seriously, though, sometimes I look at women and think, how on earth do you do it? One of my friends is a business owner, has three little girls (two are at school), her husband works away, she runs the household, school and after school activities, her business and team and herself. Plus she’s been battling some health issues too. And I thought I was busy! I think she is incredible. A modern-day Wonder Woman. She’d tell you she’s just doing what she needs to “survive”. She’s one of millions of women from all over the world doing this every day. So here’s to the strength of women. We only need to take a look around us to see strength in every form and in all its glory. Some women have amazing stories to tell about what they have been through. Look at Erin Brockovich. Oprah. Carrie Bickmore. Talk about strength! I think it’s really important to celebrate our strength. It’s amazing what you can put your body and mind through to come out the other side a stronger person - whatever that is; health issues, divorce, failed business (there are no failures by the way, only opportunities to learn), husband working away or being a single parent with a disabled child (I spoke to the most incredible woman about her life as a divorced single mum with a disabled child recently. So very inspiring). I’ve spoken with thousands of women about their struggles and strengths during my 15-year career as a journalist and I’ve noticed a few similar traits they all possess Traits of strong modern-day “Wonder Women” Take action on their health Even the busiest women take action when it comes to their health. It might only be finding

the time for a 20-minute power walk each morning and eating their greens. The effects of walking for just 20 minutes a day can do wonders for your health and wellbeing. These women are also mentally strong – they meditate, listen to affirmations, read self-help books and blogs and so on. Their health is important to them because they know they can do all the things they need to as long as their health remains a priority. Receive help Sometimes you can’t do it all and you have to be open and honest about that with yourself and the people around you. Your friends and family may want to help you, so let them. It’s not a sign of weakness or failure. It’s a smart way to operate because it allows you to get some time back for yourself and focus on the most important areas of your life. Go with your gut You follow your instincts because you know your limits and your boundaries. If something doesn’t feel right – listen to your gut, it will often serve you the best. Say no You can do everything, so don’t try. Accept help and/or say no. If it doesn’t work for you, don’t say yes for the sake of fitting in or 43

helping out. It takes a strong person to just say no without justification or explanation. Be grateful Super strong women are grateful for the lives they lead even if they are facing hardships and struggles they’ve never been through. They choose to be thankful and appreciative. Find ways to overcome obstacles Nothing stops them. Strong women are resourceful and find ways around their challenges. Often they can’t give up because a certain task needs to be done to fit in with their busy schedule and their lives. The only way is to bend, adapt and find a new way. Remain calm in a crisis In times of crisis or conflict, strong women are really good at remaining calm and seeing the bigger picture. They are diplomatic and see both sides too, which allows them to remain calm. Sometimes it may require a huge effort just to get out of bed in the morning, change jobs, leave that toxic relationship or let go of something that’s not serving you well any more. This is the strength we need to remember and celebrate. October 2016
