The Get it team have been busy. We’ve had lots of new and exciting projects this month that add to the normal stresses of putting together our monthly mag. This resulted in one of us — well, me — suffering from a friendly, not-so-little stress rash that started at the top of my scalp and worked its way diligently down my body and stopped at my little toe. Attractive? I think not. Looking like the Elephant Man in public does not do wonders for your self-esteem. So, it got me Googling ways to reduce stress. Here are some of the genius options I found. Orange Juice. What the? Apparently it makes you feel less stressed. Personally, I would suggest that the additive (preferably vodka) would be the stress reliever. Place an elastic band on your wrist and when you’re feeling the anxiety levels rising, give it a flick. Who thinks this stuff up? The only reason I would be wearing an elastic band on my wrist would be to use it to shoot marbles at the subject of my annoyance. Blow up a balloon. This one made me chuckle, apparently it forces you to breathe deeply. The only balloons in the Get it office would be helium ones followed by Daffy Duck impressions. Sounds like fun actually! Get frisky. Sorry girls, not going there with this one. Become an artist. Really? The only creative thing I’ve ever done was hand mould a pottery platter which my mother very proudly displayed for years — at the back of her cupboard. Swear. Are you #@%& kidding me? We all know that swearing at the person you’re mad at might not be the best idea, but even if the object of your frustration isn’t around, swearing has been shown to be great stress relief. Apparently in Germany there’s even a hotline you can call to swear at trained operators whose whole job is to get you as angry at them as possible! Wouldn’t that be a career of choice? Dance like no one is watching. Let me tell you, no one would want to watch, especially when accompanied with loud out-of-tune singing. Fortunately, I have very few neighbours so they are spared from the racket and the embarrassing 80s dance moves. Laughter. Yep this is the one. It releases happy endorphins and all life’s stresses just disappear. So in summary, I’m going to drink OJ, shoot marbles at the balloon that has my ex’s picture on it while laughing and swearing at it and dancing like I’ve lost my mind. Do you think that will work? I’ll let you know how I go.

Christmas is coming?

hat is red, white, and constantly lurking in the shadows? No, it’s not a creepy clown. It’s Christmas, and unfortunately, the beast is already coming out of hibernation. Every year it creeps up sooner and sooner and, let me warn you all now, I have seen the signs. Christmas is here. In October. God help us all. It all started when I ventured to the movie section of my TV Guide and saw The Santa Clause in a prime-time slot. I laughed this off as a bizarre scheduling error, because surely no sane human would think that we are actually ready for Tim Allen in a Santa suit. I mean, it doesn’t feel like it was that long ago since I attended a Christmas in July party. In fact, it wasn’t, it definitely wasn’t.

The second sign came like a biblical swarm of locusts, warning me of the end of days and the start of Christmas. My social media news feeds started transforming into a smorgasbord of ‘Christmas Hacks’. It was at this point that I knew there was no hope, Christmas is coming. Christmas is here.

Please don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I hate Christmas. However, as I get older I have noticed myself empathising with the Grinch to worrying extents.
It’s only a matter of time, stores will soon replace the Halloween costumes with tinsel and Christmas trees, Donna Hay will start showing us ‘simple’ and ‘easy’ ways to make a four-course meal, and Christmas carols will start sneaking their way into our lives. Please don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I hate Christmas. However, as I get older I have noticed myself empathising with the Grinch to worrying extents. It’s just too much pressure, everywhere I turn Christmas is telling me what it expects of me, and now it’s telling me in October? No, I’m sorry Christmas, stay in your lane. You are meant to last for 12 days, not 90. If the stress of Christmas were actually condensed to the period covered by an advent calendar then I would be more than happy to eat my small piece of low quality chocolate each day knowing that I was one step closer to freedom. In fact, Christmas, I’ll make a bargain with you, if I can crack open advent calendars for the next 90 days without being judged, you can continue to harass me with your premature presence. I’m glad we could come to an agreement.

“Chained” to the desk?
Discover why slogging away for hours at a desk isn’t beneficial for the employee or the employer with Induwa Carolyn Cummings, CoFounder of SHIFFT and Ambassadorfor the League of Extraordinary Women
fter many years in recruitment the environments of the workplaces I kept sending people to for new positions began to trouble my conscious. Don’t get me wrong, these were typical workplaces with good intentions but the expectations, the pressures, the politics, the hours worked — they were not good places for anyone. But they weren’t alone. It seemed to be the standard practice of operation. It led me to begin questioning the whole way we look at activity and people in the workplace. My girlfriend was admitted to hospital last night. She had been working with two broken ribs for the last 3 days. She chose to do this, no one made her. So why would someone do that? Push themselves to the limits to go to work? Now she is confided to bed in a ward and pumped up on painkillers. While we mightn’t go to work with broken bones, we are all guilty of pushing ourselves to the limit. It made me wonder, if your employer walked in today and said,“I’m implementing a new policy, you can work whatever hours you like,” would you feel as free as a bird? Or would you be like the elephant at the circus tied with just a piece of rope? Would you be like my friend who was crippled in pain and still dragged herself in to work? Not everyone wants to be free. Or even worse — knows how to be free.

People can have a huge sense of guilt, loyalty or burden around what “has to be done”. The idea of introducing dramatic shifts in the way companies engage with their people is very much a two-way exchange. Not only does it require introducing a whole new way of thinking to the owners, CEO’s and/or the senior management team, but sometimes also working through the process of “new found freedom” to the employees. There have been a myriad of studies around the actual amount of time that people are
People can have a huge sense of guilt, loyalty or burden around what “has to be done. productive for at work. Want to have a guess? It’s between 3 and 4 hours a day! In northern Europe there are many countries that have already started a shift towards this practice of reducing the “standard” work day. The whole 8 hour work day is from the 1920s, in the time of the Ford Company. It all evolves around 3 equal shifts of 8 hours in a day. It has no bearing on productivity, creativity and output. We live in a world where imagination, thought and ideas reign, yet we still want to apply industrial age thinking to how we work. To me, that’s like using charcoal and a slate to write a 5,000 word thesis! There is a well-known study being undertaken in Sweden (they have given us Ikea and now maybe the shorter work week — love them!). For over 12 months they have been documenting 10
the effects of nurses in a retirement village working 6 hours daily but still being paid the same. The nurses took half as much sick time, they were 20% happier, and they undertook 64% more activities with the elderly in their care. If you want to check it out, look up Svartedalens retirement home experiment. These results show an effect far beyond the workplace productivity. If people are healthier and happier, imagine the reduction that will make on our health system? If people are not all travelling at peak periods and traffic is distributed then think about the savings the government would have on infrastructure to put towards other areas. I think living here on the Gold Coast we are part of the way in understanding the value of lifestyle and how it makes us feel. Until we change to a world that recognises that it’s about output and not hours at a desk, there are some simple things we can do: l Make sure you take lunch breaks. Get outside and feel the sun and smell the fresh air. Having a break at your desk just doesn’t cut it. l Stop equating plugging away at your desk to being successful and hardworking. Go home people! l Manage your day and activities to coincide with when you are at your most productive. Place importance on creative thinking time. Depending on your role, the value of blocking out time for just imaginative thinking and problem solving can allow massive breakthroughs. Whether you go for a walk, listen to music or read a book — yes during work time — those can be worth far more than pushing yourself at a desk. All the big players in the world including Richard Branson, Oprah and Tony Robbins believe in this practice. Seems to have worked well for them!

Gold Coast/Los Angeles Actor, Blogger and Writer
GROWING UP… I grew up on a TV show, H20 Just Add Water, so I was subject to a lot of nasty comments online. Growing up, I was told I was ugly over and over, and to a young girl that can be destroying — which it was! I would go to school feeling ugly because people would tell me I was ugly. I felt judged, even when I wasn't being judged. I believed the bullies, they got what they wanted! MAKING A CHANGE… The main reason I created my blog, Pass Around the Smile, was to help other people, but it was to somewhat help myself as well. Through my writing I have learnt to take my own advice. I am constantly telling other people to love themselves, their bodies and their personalities because we're all unique. We need to learn to rock our bodies because no one else has the same! Also, I realised these bullies telling me that I was ugly were just jealous, and had nothing better to do with their time. Slowly I made an effort to not read these comments, and if I did come across them, I would force myself to laugh, and I would actually send them love! Because really, it's usually the bullies that need love, not the victims. HOW IT FEELS NOW… It feels great! Being confident brings you so many

opportunities in itself. If I didn't go through online bullying, or a long period of self-judging and comparing myself, I wouldn't have made my blog. I'm also starting to talk at workshops, forums and whatever comes my way now. Loving my body has given me the confidence to grow my online following as well, and I can now use social media as a business, which really helps in the acting world. Along with that, auditions are so much easier now. I don't compare myself to all the girls in the waiting room, or hate myself when I don't get the role.
BEFORE SELF LOVE… I, like so many women out there, used to spend way too much time worrying about how I looked and worrying about what other people thought of me. Looking back now, it was such a giant waste of time and energy that could have been channelled into something far more productive and positive. I had been brainwashed to think that I need to be a certain size and a certain shape to be beautiful or to look fit and healthy and I spent way too many years of my life chasing the 'perfect' body instead of embracing the one I have.
A SELF-APPRECIATION EXERCISE… Look at yourself from an outsider’s point of view. Close your eyes, and look at yourself as a stranger. Now you don't have to feel funny about complimenting yourself. What do you admire about this person you're looking at? It's amazing what this can make you realise!
MAKING A CHANGE… Learning to love my body has been a work in progress, but things really started to change as I got older and wiser and began focussing more on what I wanted for myself, instead of what the rest of the world expected of me. I realised that sure, if I watch what I eat, cut back on carbs and exercise more I lose weight, but I felt that being on this path was pushing me further away from where I really wanted to be.
TIPS FOR SELF-LOVE… I think all women have it hard! We are all emotional, and too hard on ourselves. Make sure you're treating yourself kindly. YOU are the most important person in your world. Not in a selfish way, we just need to work on loving ourselves first before we can truly love anyone else, and life in general. So be kind, and learn to love yourself completely!
12
THE PROCESS… Learning to focus more on how I feel instead of how I looked has definitely been the key element for me. I started focussing more on being fit, healthy, strong and active because it made me FEEL better not just because I wanted to look a certain way. I also started to gain a better understanding of my

body and more acceptance for my flaws and fluctuations which has helped me get to know myself better. Of course I am not going to sit back and say I am 100% happy with everything, every single day. Trust me, not many people would be. There is always going to be times where you feel down, or you hate certain things and wish you could change them. But that’s life. Acknowledgement and acceptance is such a big piece of the puzzle when it comes to self-love. ACHIEVEMENTS AS A RESULT… My business has definitely prospered since I started learning to love my body and focussing more on what is really important to me and the actual message I want to put out into the world. The moment I started thinking about what kind of legacy I wanted to leave, my whole approach to life, business, everything, really started to change. There is a lot of power in knowing who you are and owning it, flaws and all. TIPS FOR SELF-LOVE… Get your active gear on and get out. Movement is good for us. It helps to keep us healthy, engaged and involved in the world — both mentally and physically. Don't waste time on negativity, focus on putting in place goals and work towards them, if it means walking every day, going to the gym regularly, spending time with your kids or girlfriends, going to a movie, eating better, dancing while you are doing the ironing… get into life!
THE BIG CHANGE… I spent almost two decades as a high-powered, awardwinning corporate executive before being hit with cancer. My cancer was on my left temple and for the cancer to be removed I had to have 6cm of my head cut out leaving a large crater. Seeing the wound post-surgery gave me a shock so significant that it triggered a complete breakdown. The hardest part of my recovery was realising that I had lost complete sight of who I was and what my values were. The next hardest part of my recovery was being able to look in the mirror and firstly accept that I wasn't a monster simply because I had part of my head missing, and then finally that it was okay to love myself — even in my imperfection. THE DECISION… When I experienced my breakdown, I suddenly found myself with nothing to do, nowhere to be and only one thing to focus on — myself. One of my demons was my battle with ‘enough’. There was always something that I wasn’t good enough at, or for. I wasn’t fast enough, strong enough, intelligent enough, slim enough, fit enough, nice enough …. and the list goes on. Making a decision to become a ‘Recovering Perfectionist’ rather than a ‘Perfectionist’ was my turning point in being able to love all the parts that went together to make me who I was, especially the ones 13
that were shoved deep down in the dark where I thought no-one could see them. TAKING POSITIVE ACTION… As part of my recovery I wrote my first book, Keep it Super Simple – Tips from a Recovering Perfectionist. In this book I documented all the processes I had started using to help me recover from my breakdown. I learnt to ask myself a question that I could place between whatever was coming at me and my response. This helped to cut the autopilot reaction from my life and ensured my decisions were made from a conscious standpoint. ACIEVEMENTS AS A RESULT OF SELF-LOVE… Since learning to love every part of myself, I have published my first book and now work globally through corporate programs, conference platforms, retreats, professional mentoring and in the online environment. I am passionate about showing people there’s a very different way to live. TIPS FOR SELF-LOVE… As a society, we hold a long-term belief that we have to be stressed and exhausted before we’re allowed to be successful. If you are exhausted, unwell, stressed, sleep deprived or feel like you’re stuck, NOW is the time to take small, simple steps to move your life to a different pathway. Life was meant to be easy — we’ve just been trained to believe otherwise! October 2017

MY ALARM GOES OFF AT… Alarm is anytime between 5 and 6am depending on my chosen workload. My daily commute to my office consists of walking outside downstairs to an annex dedicated to my work followed by 9 minutes of yoga on YouTube upon arrival. Work-wise I start completing the “list of 5” I wrote as my last chore the previous day so I have immediate usefulness and productivity. At 7:20am I zip into Mum-mode and awaken my youngest for school. Grins, grumps, snuggles, and preparation ensue. 8:20am return to work for another satisfyingly productive day ... usually. By using my six years of studying Psychology at University and the last 12 years of experiential support and personal-leadership-teachings to dissolve erroneous behaviourparameters that keep us small, scared, or lonely. This ranges in applicability from helping a person be able to commit to a method of securing sales in their business, to helping keep a person alive. HOW I GOT HERE… 1) My school-teacher Mum nurtured my EQ (Emotional Intelligence) as much as my IQ so caring about others was not an option, it was breathing 2) Becoming a Double-Parent (feels nicer than the connotations of “solo-Mum” doesn’t it) 3) Way down the track, choosing to marry a mighty man that recognised kindness, fun and respect are THE fundamental wealths too 4) Calculated risk taking and consciously deciding to like and approve of myself ... no matter what 5) Being fascinated with the science of our minds and learning how to increase our productivity, enjoyment and connectivity
6) Choosing to properly give a long-term sh*t about others 7) Choosing to dance when the going gets tough, instead of whinge or sit in the drama 8) Attracting some mighty mentors and role models that opened my mind to the possibilities of what’s achievable when effort is being driven by progressive big-picture compassion MOST REWARDING PART… This is a 3-way tie: 1) Fulfilment. Being able to support my children in their lives by not having to ask for time off. 2) Purpose (living my dream). Overflowing tears of happiness getting to be a person delivering proper value that genuinely creates betterment for others. 3) Freedom. Actively creating the parameters of this life I’m living rather than being told and hemmed in. MOST SURPRISING PART OF MY JOB… My intentional blurring of “professional distance”. Rather than merely accepting cash and doing my best I instead ask for permission to turn up at that person’s house, meet their family, and taxi them to the ongoing service that’ll do more good than simply using my professional training alone. Every month I take a person to their first AA meeting, Narcotics Anonymous or Gambling Anonymous. We sit, stay, share, and LEARN in these meetings, together. Real change happens in these meetings. WORST PART OF THE JOB… The pay! If I stuck to the usual model of strictly parametered service and systemised obstructions to offering greater mental health, I’d be well paid. Bigger picture instead though, I prefer to assist to the best of my ability. HOW I FIND BALANCE… Balance is an ongoing effort... like breathing. We don’t know we’re doing it sometimes, but if we stop the consequences are dire. Sunday is my “balancer”.I find I can do, be, see, give, share, support, care and turn up as much as I like during the week IF I make sure Sunday I just take care of me by doing bugger all, and going slowly.
Plan B: I’d continue volunteering at our local Primary & High Schools, and grow more of my own veges to share with neighbours, and strangers that drive past. October 2017

Get it’s Kirstin Cuthbert speaks with Noni Croft on how she moved past childhood sexual assault to be the positive, vibrant and successful woman she is today esiding in Nerang with her partner Lauren and two gorgeous little corgis, Walter and Frankie, lives Noni Croft. The bright and bubbly 30 year old is a social entrepreneur who loves to connect likeminded people through her meet up Gold Coast Sociability. She’s also a women’s networking leader, exercise therapist and yoga teacher. Noni is also a survivor of childhood sexual assault but doesn’t let it define her. She lives life on her terms and fills it with her partner and puppies, surfing, beach days, Burleigh Headland walks and eating out at cool local restaurants. Hi Noni, thanks so much for speaking with me today! Something you are active in is fighting for those who have remained unheard and silenced after childhood sexual assault. How do you do this? This year in January I spoke in front 16
of 100 people alongside Hetty Johnston from Bravehearts and Moyra Major from Hot Tomato in regards to disclosing about childhood sexual assault. As a survivor myself I think it’s really important to arm other people with the strength to speak up because there are a lot of factors that hurt people when they don’t. I also write blogs, speak publically and I’ve had a lot of people disclose to me. I think the oldest was a 60+ year old guy who had never told his wife or kids and he was like, “Finally I get to just have it out of my mind, and it can go into a safe place where you can hold it for me.” It’s so great you’re speaking about it. On that note, do you want to tell me about your experience? So from birth until 10 I was sexually abused at the hands of my father, other family members, and also members of a Christian church. And then from 10 until
about 17 it was additional family members. I grew up with a really domestically violent father who used to beat our Mum and manipulate and control everyone. On the outside he was such a great Dad and he looked all fine and shiny but it was behind closed doors that he was a really horrific person. You were so young when it was occurring, how did you know it was wrong? As I child you do have a barometer. Your physical body, it’s an okay stimulation, it’s an okay feeling, but inside, your emotions and your morals are like this makes me feel wrong. It’s a very confusing thing, especially from birth when you can’t talk or actually say no. I guess I really knew when at school my friends and I would talk and they would say,“Me and my Daddy go and have picnics,” and I would say my Daddy does this and they would say, “My Daddy doesn’t do that.” So I felt really ostracised. It was social proof that it was really wrong. How did what you were experiencing stop? Initially it stopped because my siblings and I were all hospitalised with vaginal and anal bleeding and so Mum filed for divorce. She was taking all the abuse for herself until she realised it was happening to us. When I left Adelaide, where I had initially grew up, at 10 years old, it was then the boyfriends and partners of my siblings that continued the abuse on me. I was the youngest of three. It was only once I was completely removed from my family situation that I could be myself and I got a chance to break the cycle. Did you choose to press charges? By the time I knew that I could I was about 16 and I pursued it in some ways. I did call the South Australian police and consider what it would mean, and it would have meant dragging my whole family through the legal system and bringing it all up. At that time I was too fragile and too young, and I didn’t have any family support. We kind of just kept it under the rug and didn’t really talk about it. I think my family’s greatest loss is each other. Dad never got to know me, he never got to know the beautiful things I can do. For me, that’s comfort enough, because of his manipulative and really wrong actions he lost some of the best people in his life. And to do court things even now, it would take years out of my life and I’ve lost enough. And do you have any relationships with your family now? No, I have no relationships with any of my family members. It’s been about five years. I tried really hard but the domestic violence, sexual assault and everything unsaid just cracked the relationships. You can’t relate on any level. You’re always trying to reclaim something that’s lost. They’re really quite toxic and haven’t broken the cycle yet. Well you seem like such a positive person now!
It’s my choice to be happy now. I never chose to be violated as a child, I never chose to be born into that family, but I can choose all of the good things I do now.
Yeah, once you realise your life is your own you can to be really happy about it. It’s my choice to be happy now. I never chose to be violated as a child, I never chose to be born into that family, but I can choose all of the good things I do now. How have you worked on yourself to get to such a happy place today? Exercise! I know it sounds silly but exercise has certainly been a main component of it. Its’s such a natural antidepressant which is really cool. So much personal development, whether it be reading or going to seminars. I’ve had 18 years of counselling and psychology, used the Emotional Freedom Technique, chiropractic care, everything. I’ve done it, I’ve chased it, and I’ve wanted it. I didn’t want to be depressed or dark, or go down the avenues of drug, sex and alcohol. I just didn’t want to because I got a second chance at life. And you’re living it! Yeah! I’ve got a beautiful partner and she is my number one fan and I’m her number one fan. I have everything I need in my life, and everything to be grateful for. That’s so lovely to hear! So tell me a bit about your partner and how you two met. I was her boss! We kind of met by accident because I had a small, tiny gym on the Sunshine Coast and of all the gyms in Queensland that she could have gone to, she found mine. I wasn’t out yet, I was 26. We were friends for about a year and we just connected on every level. I knew I was gay but I just hadn’t really had a reason to come out. My Mum was quite homophobic and I was always conscious of my family’s approval so I kind of hid it for a really long time. Then when I met Loz (Lauren), she was just everything. I left my business, I left the Sunshine Coast and we started new down here on the Gold Coast and have been together five years now. It was just meant to be. It was worth fighting for. Something else you fight is the association of sexual assault with being gay. Tell us a bit about this. Often when I tell people that I’m in a same-sex relationship, and they know that I 17
experienced childhood sexual assault, they’ll say,“Oh, so you’re gay because you were touched when you were little?” And it’s like no, I just happen to be in love with someone who is the same gender as me, and it’s totally separate from childhood sexual assault. People think you’ve been manipulated into only liking one thing but I had female cousins who were abusive, I had siblings who were abusive as well. The abuse was one part of my life and being in love, no matter what gender, is totally different. To think that something so beautiful and so love-filled in my life is because of childhood sexual assault, is really offensive. And it’s not uncommon, I’ve had many clients say they have experienced the same stigma that their same-sex experience is because of their sexual assault. I even heard it from counsellors I saw. I encourage people to accept themselves as they are. I accept that I experienced childhood sexual assault but it’s not who I am. It’s just something that happened in my life. It’s not my story. Are there any other thoughts you have on the topic that you wanted to share? 1 in 5 children experience it, and that’s just who reports. It’s a big deal but giving it an optimistic and positive voice shows you can find positive solutions that work for you. I hope we talk about it more but I hope we don’t get so stuck talking that we can’t move on. I’ve known a lot of people who disclose and then live there. They stay in the “poor me” state and it’s okay to be held in that moment for a little while but move on, be great, do great things. I really want to start a movement because a lot of the time when you disclose people are like,“Oh I’m so sorry that happened to you,” but why be sorry? It should be like,“Wow! How brave are you!?” We need to stop saying sorry to people and start celebrating them for being bloody brave. If you or anyone you know is experiencing sexual assault free counselling is available through the National Sexual Assault, Domestic Family Violence Counselling Service 1800 737 732.

It’s the worst time of year for love
If you’re looking for the love of your life, it’s best you wait a few more months s we come out of hibernation and slip into swimmers, shorts and breezy dresses, we seek out what are commonly referred to as “men” in the hopes that warm weather equals warm hearts which translates to everlasting love and living happily ever after. Summer lovin’ having a blast, right? Maybe not so. While we will find no shortage of men at the beach, BBQs, bars and other popular summertime spots, research shows that the majority of casual hook ups happen in summer, and that’s what that most singles are looking for. The math goes like this, hot weather = casual sex, cold weather = long-term relationships. For some real figures on this trend, online dating service OkCupid surveyed 18 million of their users between 2013 and 2016 and found there’s a 17% increase on average in people looking for casual sex in the early summer. Also, compared to the rest of the year, there are 33% more people on their service looking for just that. The term ‘spring fling’ isn’t a made up thing after all. During spring and summer we’re all in less clothing, generally in pretty good shape, are tanned, upbeat and looking for fun. There’s more people on the Gold Coast for
October 2017
The math goes like this, hot weather = casual sex, cold weather = long-term relationships. leisure, travel or work, and these people aren’t generally looking for commitment. But fear not if love is what you are searching for, because being in a loved-up relationship in summer isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Firstly, it’s hot and we’re all sweaty messes. Holding hands becomes a thing of the past, cuddles on the couch are impossible as we basically slip off each other and needn’t we even mention about actually getting down to business. That’s why a fling is better, no hand holding, no cuddles and straight after getting down to business they’re out of there so we can jump in the shower to cool off and change the sheets easily if need be. Secondly, there are way more events on over summer than any other time of year. Most of us have freer schedules and are looking to go to these events, or the total opposite, to recluse inside so we don’t end up burnt with a chance of sun stroke. If our partner isn’t on the same page as us, summer
18
will be a tug of war between going to events because one of us wants to or not going because the other doesn’t want to. There’s no winning either way. Lastly, when we’re in a comfortable relationship, chances are we care less about getting in perfect shape for summer, but that can make us feel a tad jealous when we’re at the beach with our partner and see him subtly checking out a toned woman in a revealing bathing suit. Or, if he sees us perving over a guy’s abs while our guy picks up the beer balanced on his beer belly wondering how much beer he has to give up to look like that. Love isn’t completely dead though. Couples that have lasted for decades together seem to have it down to a fine art. Perhaps they like and dislike exactly the same things in summer, crank the air con at home so hand holding, cuddles and more are still enjoyable and apply each other’s sun screen so no one ends up burnt and cranky. Ah, true love. Chances are those lovebirds didn’t meet in summer though. So even though you probably won’t meet the love of your life this summer, if you’re looking, there’s still plenty of fun to be had. Maybe the line in that popular Grease track should be changed to “Summer hook ups having a blast…” That seems more fitting after all.

GET IT I BEAUTY STYLE
It’s Thursday night and that can only mean one thing. The latest episode of The Bachelorette is on and I’m in my PJs, covered in Doritos crumbs, watching Sophie deliver perfectly executed oneliners? Nope. It’s late night shopping and I’m feeding my addiction to the latest Quay sunglasses? Wrong again. Thursday night means only one thing ladies: it’s tan night. On this night, around the country — and particularly the Gold Coast — women battle with the strenuous exfoliating, tiger-stripe knuckles and Cirque Du Soleil-worthy contortionist tricks that it takes to apply a natural and effortless looking tan. Now this is the moment that divides you all. Half of you will raise your fist in solidarity and triumph. The other half will roll your eyes, mutter something about vanity and go to turn the page. But wait — I’ve got a case to make on behalf of self-tanners everywhere! Did you know that melanoma rates in Australia are on the rise? Scary stuff. Do you know what you DON’T get melanomas from? That’s right, fake tan. So really, you could see us less as superficial Barbie dolls and more as tireless, fearless crusaders of health and wellness, saving the Gold Coast one oompaloompa tan at a time! We are literally fighting cancer here people, and if that does not make us unsung superheroes, I don’t know what will. Now, I know what you’re thinking: women should love their bodies just the way they are. Feminism, empowerment and all that. I could not agree more. Every woman is a damn goddess. But feminism is about empowering women to have the choice and I choose sun-kissed goddess brown over is-she-sick-or-just-pale white. Finally, self-tanning is a sport. Have you tried applying self-tanning mousse to your own back? I rest my case. The gymnast skills that we employ would put Simone Biles to shame. In fact, if our partners could see the positions we twist our bodies into to apply a perfectly blended layer of tan, they’d start to demand more risqué positions in the bedroom… So ladies, next time you turn your nose up at your co-workers orange, streaky fake glow that smells faintly of cheap coconut, remember that she is a badass cancerfighting, feminist athlete and salute her instead!

Tanning tales f there is one beauty trend that is synonymous with the Gold Coast, it’s fake tanning. There isn’t a street or shopping centre on the coast that isn’t home to a tanning salon. And while you may think it is fuelled by a superficial vanity and obsessive need to look like we’ve just returned from two weeks in Bali, it’s so much more than that. It’s a passionate dedication to sun safety — melanomas aren’t a good look! Well, at least that’s our story and we’re sticking to it! For those who can’t afford weekly professional tans, there are a plethora of at-home options that can be just as effective. This issue, we test out two of the most popular on the market!
Loving Tan 2 Hour Express Deluxe Bronzing Mousse in Dark The Loving Tan mousse formula is very light and airy and the colour — an olive based brown — is quite deep, giving it a very dark guide. It applies very easily, blending exceptionally well considering how dark the formula is. After applying the mousse to my body and standing back to admire my handiwork, one thing is obvious — I am BROWN! The formula dries almost instantly, which I am very impressed with. Now to wait. Two hours later and I jump in the shower and watch the water turn brown as it runs down the drain — surely it can’t all just be washing off? I finish my shower and am pleasantly surprised to emerge a bronzed, glowing butterfly! While not as dark as I was expecting, the tan is very natural and continues to develop over the next few hours. There is no offensive scent and I get a number of compliments on my colour — “Oh, I’ve just flown in from two weeks in Bali,” I lie but no one buys it. Bondi Sands Self Tanning Foam in Dark Bondi Sands is a big player in the selftan arena so I’m expecting big things. The lightweight formula is slightly scented and reminds me of tropical
22
beaches and coconuts — which is a pretty standard fake tan scent. This is a green-based formula and boy does that show! It applies easily, but does take a bit more effort to blend and it does leave a slight green tinge. Despite this, it still looks quite natural. The formula takes 20 minutes or so to dry completely, which leaves me standing around looking like a scarecrow while I wait. This tan requires an 8-hour developing period, so I retreat to my bed where I can avoid all water for this time period (note to self: white bed sheets were a terrible idea…) Morning arrives, I jump in the shower and watch the colour guide wash off. I check the mirror and am relieved that any green had washed away! I am left with a dark, natural brown with no streaks or patches. The scent is definitely a bit stronger with this tan but if anyone asks, it’s the remnants of the coconut massage oil from the Tahitian holiday I just returned from… wink, wink! Overall, both these products have left me more bronzed goddess and less pale English rose! I’m impressed with both results, however, for my skin tone the Loving Tan is a more natural colour and certainly received more compliments. Happy tanning ladies!

Kids and skin cancer Keep your kids cancer free with these tips from Dr Natasha Cook of Darlinghurst Dermatology
he incidence of skin cancer in children is rare. However, more importantly it’s how we look after our children's skin and what we teach them that sets them up for life when it comes to their chances of getting a skin cancer or not. We get nearly 80% of our lifetime UV exposure before we hit the age of 15. It's that exposure that goes on to create skin cancer as an adult. The damage that is done to the DNA inside the skin cells does not manifest for 20 years or so later. So what we see on adult skin at the age of 40 is actually created in the first 10-15 years of life. Two out of three Australians get at least one skin cancer in their lifetime. Usually more than one! So protecting our kid's skin from the get go is essential. As I say, early intervention is prevention. So what’s the best sunscreen and how do we apply it for kids? There's an ongoing debate with chemical sunscreen versus physical sunscreens. Chemical sunscreen blockers block the UV by absorbing the UV energy and undergoing a reaction in the skin that dissipates the UV energy. Physical sunscreen agents “reflect” the UV energy and stop it damaging the skin cells. Personally I like the physical blocking sunscreen agents. There are only two: zinc and titanium dioxide. My reasons are they are inert minerals,
which means they cause no allergy on the skin. They are broad spectrum and they also block infra-red light which we now understand causes other damage to the skin such as ageing and pigmentation. One of my favourites is the Ego Sunsense Sensitive Skin Sunscreen, 50+formula — but it has to be the new formula. It is zinc only and goes into the skin really well with minimal whiteness, and it is relatively not very greasy. No Casper the Friendly Ghost look with this one! Application is imperative. If we don’t apply properly we simply do NOT get the proper protection. So in a nut shell: one teaspoon for the face and neck and a teaspoon per limb. If you’re super protective like I am, do two applications, 20 minutes apart. Then reapply every two hours. I call it the rule of 2s. Don’t forget the power of fabric. It’s better than sunscreen. So long sleeve rashies are a must. Also remember that hats don’t give you full protection so don’t forget the sunscreen on the face. A hat is not a substitute. Sunglasses are also important for kids as UV causes lesions on the white part of the eye known as pterygiums which are painful and difficult to treat down the track. With these things in mind, enjoy some fun in the sun with your family!

DITCH THE CUBICLE Connect with nature and reap the health benefits of an outdoor office with Adbri Masonry Ambassador Jason Hodges
orking from home is on the rise and so too is the popularity of a home office. But who said a home office had to be restricted to indoors? Take your business out into the fresh air and set up an outdoor office. Not only is it a cost-effective way to use space in the backyard but you’ll also reap the scientifically proven benefits of nature. Productivity and wellbeing According to Planet Ark research, there are significant health and environmental benefits from incorporating nature into your daily routine. Spending time with nature induces positive feelings with 86% of Australians who have a close connection with nature saying they are significantly happier, and just 10 minutes spent outside can help to improve mental health and wellbeing. Adding elements of nature into your workday such as fresh air, natural light and greenery can be a mood-booster and great for the brain — resulting in increased productivity, focus and creativity while reducing mental fatigue. Brain fog from being cooped up inside will be a thing of the past! Convenience Having a garden office proves to be beneficial in more ways than increasing your work productivity alone. It is about convenience and making life easier. People October 2017
are attracted by the versatility of working in an open, light-filled space, away from the noise and distractions of everyday life. The ability to escape and connect with nature in the comfort of your own home is a winning combination. With the great climate on the Gold Coast and the weather only getting better, there’s never been a better time to try an outdoor office out for yourself, here’s some tips to help you get started. 1. Go green: Embrace your outdoor office with a landscaped, leafy outlook. Incorporate easy-to-maintain garden beds and vertical garden walls that will add visual interest, maximise the space available and create privacy. 2. Section it off: Use large format pavers to create a solid area that will clearly define the workspace. This will separate the office from the rest of the yard. If you have a lawn, place the pavers as stepping24
stones to and from the entry for a practical and aesthetic aspect. 3. Be sun smart: With longer, warmer days throughout spring and summer, opt for shade cloths, pergolas or umbrellas to reduce sun exposure and glare. 4. Add ambience: Introduce a water feature that will enhance the aesthetic appeal and serve as a functional purpose such as blocking out noise from traffic or neighbours — creating a tranquil ambience. 5. Find your furniture: Selecting the right furniture is imperative, as it will allow you to add structure and maximise the usability of all available space. Look to seating with hidden storage space or try building a seating wall with courtyard blocks.

Swap out the old soft furnishings for new, brightly coloured or floral cushions and throws to inexpensively change the mood and feel. 5. Ever fresh faux flowers always soothe and decorate an area easily. Plus, they will last until the next visit at the holiday house. 6. Don’t underestimate a well-placed coffee table book, such as the new Jane Webster, French House Chic. These are just some of the ways Vogelhaus recommends to keep your costs to a minimum and have your holiday house looking like an idyllic haven. All that’s left to do is enjoy your hard-earned break! ove it, hate it, or don’t know what it is… livestreaming is on the rise and social media marketers are describing it as one of the top trends for 2018. It’s now across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube with LinkedIn hopping on the bandwagon and giving some members access to livestreaming on their platform too. Livestreaming is broadcasting live video content as it happens to your friends, followers, subscribers and online connections. It allows your audience to watch you in real time and comment on the video as you are creating it so they can engage with you, ask questions and receive answers. It’s relatively simple to use and the way it works varies a little for each platform, you can Google how it works on each platform if you’re curious, but there is a button you press and once you hit it you’re live in all your glory. No editing, no filters, just you as you are in that moment. Sound scary? It can be, especially if you hit it by accident and have no makeup on and suddenly all of your followers get notified that you indeed are live and they hop on the video to see you looking like a deer in headlights. But you can end the live video just as easily as you started it. Being prepared to go live is important, you want to make sure you’re presentable, in a location where the internet connection is good and where they can easily hear you. October 2017
Everyone’s attention spans are getting shorter and shorter so keep in mind that no one wants to watch a video that keeps dropping in and out due to poor internet connection or one where they can hardly hear because there is so much background noise. Now you know what livestreaming is about and have a few tips on how to do it yourself, here are our top five ways to use livestreaming for your business. Create personal interaction One of the biggest reasons behind the popularity of livestreaming is that it cuts through the BS and lets you see who's truly behind the brand. The real, raw and authentic people are showcased and it humanises your company and allows your viewers (and current or potential customers) to see your friendly face, sense of humour and passionate spirit which they can connect with. Share live events If you have an event on or are attending one on behalf of your business, share it with your audience. Walk around the event, ask the viewers questions of who or what they want to see. Ensure the event is in line with your brand so you keep it relevant to your audience and keep the footage interesting. Showcase new products and BTS Allow your online community to see your new products and services first, even just sneak peeks or behind the scenes of 26
the creation, development or production. This is a great way to build up momentum when launching something new and cool, or showing your audience how the products they know and love are created. They receive the inside scoop which makes them feel important. Conduct interviews and Q&A sessions Interviews can be with people in your team, creators of products you sell or wellknown people within your industry. These are designed to be informative and also interactive, so allow questions from the viewers as well. Another way to interact is to do a Q&A directly with your viewers. Have them ask you questions and answer them in real time. You can also ask them questions to show your interest; their responses will appear as comments on the video. Conduct training No one on social media has ever complained about a brand helping too much or providing too much value. Be the go-to place for information on your field of expertise. If it’s fashion or homewares, discuss trends and how to style certain pieces. If it’s a service you can chat about how different things you do help business or if you’re an artist or in the beauty industry you could do real time art lessons or makeup tutorials. There are so many options when it comes to livestreaming, these are just a few. It’s all about bringing your audience real value in your content and authenticity. Go live today!

Love your body Hello fashionistas!
Let’s talk body shape. As a stylist, one of the jobs I enjoy the most is shopping with my fabulous girls. Most ladies don't know what shape they are and are forever making mistakes with their purchases. I once had a lady who thought her shape was a hamburger... with the lot! So to determine your body shape, have a good look at yourself in the mirror… preferably naked! I know, it can be a shock! Let's go through a few shapes. Triangle: Bottom heavy, a bit of junk in the trunk. Your shoulders will be smaller than your hips and thighs, generally you will be a size smaller on top than the bottom. Look for darker colour on the bottom and have a party from the waist up, frills, larger print, shoulder pads, extended sleeve. You will generally have a great waist so show it off! Inverted triangle: This is the complete reverse of our last shape; your shoulders will be wider than your hips, coming down to slim hips and a great set of pins! This top-heavy shape will have a good set of boobs, so keep the top half neat and fitted. Have sleeves, scoop or v neck to elongate your neckline, and a party from the waist down. Flowing pants, A-line skirt, cross over or wrap around bottoms create a shape to balance out your top half — this will create feminine lines. Rectangle: This shape is pretty much straight up and down, shoulder and hip width are the same with a slight waist and the Ikea pack bottom — the flat pack! Look at this shape and use it to your advantage; give the illusion there is a waist with clever styling, draping, wide-leg pants and a fitted top. The rule here is anything flowing, balance it out with a fitted piece. Curvy: Dangerous curves girls, you will have a good set of boobs, a generous bottom area and a very small window of opportunity to create a waist, but you will have one... so use it! To achieve a perfect balance look for fitted shorter jackets to cinch to the waist, fit and flare skirts and dress, smaller collars and not too large print anywhere. So we have covered the shapes. You may also have a larger tummy area, but don't despair, with clever styling and long vertical lines, you can fix this. Remember to accentuate the good bits and cover up the bits we are not loving. Have a stylish month,
Susie

GET READY FOR THE
Spring Races
pring has sprung! And I can’t think of a better way to spend a warm, sunny day than getting dressed up, sipping bubbly and admiring all the fashionable folk at the iconic Gold Coast Turf Club this racing season. The Turf Club holds a race event every Saturday, with special feature events every few weeks over spring and summer. Get involved Gold Coast, it’s time to raise the bar and show off some serious style. Dress the part There are set guidelines for dressing appropriately for the races. Ladies, this means keeping your dresses at a modest length. Ditch the spaghetti straps for their more conservative sister, the wide strap. Or even better, cover your shoulders altogether and no boobs on show. I understand many of us rely on them for free drinks (!) so bring your wallet. Dresses should have more of a structured, tailored silhouette, rather than slinky numbers. Stash that one in your bag for later if you intend on hitting the clubs. Millinery. This is a fancy word for hats and fascinators, and is an integral part of your race wear. It’s also a great opportunity to wear something cute in your hair and there are plenty of options. I’ll go into them a bit later. This year’s hottest trends This spring, it’s all about bright colours; red, pink, yellow and all shades of blue. Try colour blocking too. The pink and red combo is big this season. Bold prints are a great way to make a statement. It’s also the season to pull out your

florals. You might like to play around with some fun fruit prints, and gingham and stripes are sure to grace the manicured lawns of race tracks everywhere this year. Take inspiration from recent catwalk shows by trying off-the-shoulder looks including the cold shoulder and one shoulder, accordion pleats and ruffles, which seem to be the must-have trends for this season. When shopping for race wear, my goto brands are Thurley, Asilio, Alice McCall, Mossman, Sheike, ASOS and Kookai. Keeping it cool Here on the coast, the days can get hot and steamy, so keeping cool can be a sticky situation. Look for lightweight fabrics; I love soft prints on cotton blends and delicate laces. Sheer panels are also a lot of fun to play around with. Another way to combat the heat is to try a full skirt or an A-line dress. Anything too clingy or heavy might leave you with some not-so-stylish sweat patches…. Finding the perfect headpiece There are so many options for millinery (this is your new word that will make you sound like a racing fashion expert). You can wear a crown or a straw boater, which 33
look great on everyone. Or, if you’re considering entering fashion competitions, you can have a hat made by a milliner. When attending a casual day at the races, my favourite choice is the ever popular crown. There are so many variations, be it jewelled, floral, feather or halo shaped. Jewelled headbands are also a super easy DIY option and are light and comfortable to wear. Myer or David Jones are now stocking their spring hats. I’ve seen some pretty crowns come out in the new Olga Berg collection, or if you’re wanting a simple embellished headband, try Adorne. If you’d prefer to rent a hat or buy second hand, check out Millinery Market, a new online marketplace where everyday women from across the country list their hats for rent or sale: millinerymarket.com.au Lastly, don’t forget to lather on the sunscreen, drink some water in between the champagne and enjoy yourself! GET IT I WEDDINGS
HOW TO BE THE
PERFECT
Wedding Guest IN 2017
Wedding season is well and truly here, so get up to scratch with this year’s wedding do’s and don’ts with Shaan Patterson If you see a post of your close friend’s newly diamonded finger and she hasn’t told you yet, don’t be afraid to call her out (nicely). Even though it’s 2017, close family and friends deserve to know first. If your friend has told you the great news of her engagement (privately), hold off posting anything about it on social media until she has done so first. Ladies, if you’re organising the bachelorette party, strippers are always not needed; there are plenty of other fun games to play without anyone having to get naked. When commenting on your friend’s engagement ring leave out questions of cost and carat; remember, a ring is a symbol of love and commitment, not how much cash her fiancé chose to splash. When asked by the bride and groom for cash in lieu of gifts, don’t be stingy sista; they probably forked out $100-$300 for you just to be there. Now’s a great time to show your generous spirit. Don’t post anything negative about your friend’s wedding online. If there’s a significant issue talk to the bride about it, otherwise keep your mouth shut. Follow the RSVP instructions on the invitations, chances are the bride is too busy to look for your response elsewhere (i.e. on her Facebook wall or engagement announcement Instagram post). Not everybody needs one plus one. If you don’t have a serious boyfriend and your friend hasn’t given you a plus one, don’t kick up a stink. Her budget may not cater for the random guy you meet a few weeks before the wedding on an online dating site. If the bride and groom have a specific hashtag for their special day, use that on your photos when posting to social media. They have chosen this so they don’t miss posts of their friends and family from the wedding. This is no new rule but is as relevant as ever — don’t wear white to someone else’s wedding. You were not invited to upstage the bride; it’s her day not yours. Don’t post photos of the bride and groom to social media before they get the chance to post their own. It’s their news to share first, not yours. If the wedding has an “unplugged” ceremony (no phones/ tablets to be used) follow their wishes. You can last for more than five minutes without looking at or posting to social media — just in case you didn’t realise. October 2017
Stay out of the wedding photographer’s way. The happy couple are not paying a large amount of money to just have snaps of you in your drunken state. Take advantage of the open bar, but don’t let the open bar take advantage of you. No one wants to hold your hair back when they could be partying instead. Don’t fight the other girls during the bouquet toss, in case you didn’t realise by now, the bouquet doesn’t come with an immediate fiancé. 34

GET IT I GENERAL STORY
The ugly truth October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Get it’s Hayley Bogaard is starting an honest conversation, inspired by those who have battled this devastating disease. Breast cancer may be first detected in a number of ways - from noticing a lump right through to an unexpected discovery in a routine blood test – but the official diagnosis is always devastating. The physical examinations, the seemingly never-ending blood tests, the biopsies and worse yet – the waiting. Waiting to hear those incomprehensible words from your doctor. And that is just the beginning.
I think it’s important not to sugar coat the truth about cancer. It’s not pretty pink balloons and ribbons, it’ a living nightmare for those effected by it,
f there is one colour synonymous with October, it’s pink. This month, we will be inundated with pink ribbons, pink balloons and pink pens. Businesses and individuals will essentially ‘pinkwash’ themselves, proudly bearing the hue like they would their favourite team’s colours. But why? Because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Australia. So at this point, I could launch into some shocking statistics about breast cancer – like that it is estimated that 1 in 41 females in Australia will die of breast cancer by their 85th birthday – but I won’t. I could list all the symptoms and early warning signs that you should look for – but I won’t. I could tell you a heart-warming story of a community fundraiser, where ladies come together to wear pink and sell raffle tickets – but again, I won’t. What I will do, is start an uncensored, raw discussion about breast cancer and the physical and emotional impact it has on the lives of its sufferers and their families. October 2017
Next come the physical impacts. We all know that chemotherapy is difficult. We know you’ll feel tired, nauseous and your hair will fall out. But what we don’t know is the agonising ache that spreads throughout your body causing cramps and spasms, the painful ulcers that riddle your mouth, the nerve-pain that shoots through your extremities caused by chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy or parathesia. Not to mention the infections that invade your body thanks to your new low white blood cell count, the swelling in your arms and legs that makes every position uncomfortable and the persistent diarrhoea that keeps you running to and from the bathroom. It doesn’t just hurt, it’s not just tiredness and it’s not just an upset stomach. It’s debilitating and it’s ugly. For many women, the physical side effects are mild compared to the emotional and mental ones. From the moment the c-word is mentioned, it dominates your thoughts. Fear, anxiety and trepidation overwhelm your conscious and this only intensifies once the official diagnosis is delivered. The emotions are to be expected – anger, fear, disbelief – but what many women don’t anticipate is the twisted rollercoaster of mental and emotional turbulence that comes too. That, and the extreme loneliness. Even when surrounded by supportive family and friends, the early days of a cancer diagnosis are lonely and frightening. You may wonder if there is any point, you may 36
lose hope. Many will develop severe depression and anxiety. But the rollercoaster will have it’s ups as well, moments when you feel strong, motivated to defeat this beast, positive and optimistic. But just like a rollercoaster, the climb is often met only with a dramatic and stomach churning drop. Also along for this tumultuous ride, will be your closest friends and family and it will be just as hard to watch the devastating impact it has on them. Seeing their grief, knowing how hopeless they feel, watching the torment it causes them. Knowing that behind their words of encouragement and positivity is a heart and soul that is broken. As well, cancer is expensive and financial hardships just add to the stress. There is no sugar coating breast cancer. It is ugly, destructive and vicious. But where there is a will, there is a way and that way comes in the form of incredibly brave and strong survivors such as Carla Mills. Gold Coast local, Carla, was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in October 2012. Since then, she has undergone six surgical procedures including a double mastectomy, breast reconstruction, full hysterectomy and six rounds of aggressive chemotherapy. She has battled depression and anxiety and has risen from the ‘cancer hole’ as she calls it, to be stronger than ever. This month, Carla will launch a web TV show called ‘Cancer Unplugged – Breaking the Silence’, which coincides with her official five year remission. The show will be a raw, edgy and emotionally honest take on the realities of breast cancer with a big dose of pink! “I think it’s important not to sugar coat the truth about cancer. It’s not pretty pink balloons and ribbons, it’ a living nightmare for those effected by it,” says Carla. So this month, while proudly sporting our pink ribbon badges and scribbling notes with our pretty pink pens, we will be celebrating the brave women, like Carla, who step into battle against this dark enemy. This is just the start of a very real, honest and at times difficult conversation that I encourage you to continue. This month, let pink represent the heroines who brave the frontline, not the ugly disease they fight! Episode 1 of Cancer Unplugged: Breaking the Silence will launch on Facebook on October 18th at 7.30pm. You can find it all at facebook.com/ cancerunplugged
GET IT I MENTAL HEALTH
Am I depressed or just sad? It’s a question frequently pondered so Vicole Tarratt, Provisional Psychologist and PHD candidate, is here to answer it
veryone goes through sad times when certain life events occur, but how do you know if what you are feeling is normal or if it is something more, like depression? Low mood and sadness are normal human emotions. We all feel sad or low at times and it presents differently in each of us. Because we all feel low from time to time it will come as no surprise that you might recognise some of the symptoms of depression. What are the symptoms of depression? If you feel low mood very severely, too often or it impacts your ability to live a normal life for more than two weeks you might meet criteria for depression. Human emotions are complex and how depression presents itself can vary a lot from one person to the next. However, some common symptoms of low mood include: Unhelpful thoughts l These are usually self-critical and negative about yourself l Feelings of hopeless or helplessness about yourself and the future l Difficulty with concentrating l Reduced attention l Decline in memory Physical symptoms l Feeling tired or exhausted l Changes in sleep l Alterations in appetite l Reduced interest in things that you usually enjoy l Doing things at a slower pace Changes in Behaviour l Being more irritable, especially towards close relationships l Avoiding people and places l Avoiding and not enjoying things you used to enjoy doing
Am I alone? If you think you might meet criteria for depression you are not alone. It is estimated that around 1 million Australians experience depression each year at different levels of intensity.

psychologist or psychiatrist based on the cause of your symptoms of depression. However, you do not need a referral to see a psychologist. You can book an appointment to speak to someone, or these days you can even have an appointment in the convenience of your own home over the internet by going to lysn.com.au. If it is an emergency and you want to talk to someone immediately you can call a counsellor from Lifeline on 131114 or emergency services on 000. The most important thing to remember is there is help that is right for you and no matter how you feel right now, there are people that can and want to help you find a way to feel better. Letting someone know that you need help is the first and often the hardest step to feeling better.
But I am sometimes happy? The symptoms for depression are not always consistent and you might find that you have times where you feel better, however, this is not always the case. Am I weak in character? If you are depressed it does not mean that you have a weak personality. The way in which we think about things can severely impact how we feel. It is possible to work on our perception of the world, which in turn has a positive impact on our mood. This means we can learn how to beat depression. What is the treatment? The good news is that depression can be treated, but without help it is much harder to recover. Finding someone that understands your unique situation that you get along with is very important. That means that you might go to a few psychologists until you find the right one for you. What should I do if I think I might be depressed? You have many options. If you are comfortable talking to your general practitioner about how you feel, they will work out the best plan of action for you. This can include a referral to either a 37

Are carbs the enemy? Jeff Osborne from Vision Personal Training Bundall weighs in hen it comes to losing weight and getting in ‘summer’ shape there is much controversy surrounding ‘carbs’. Do you cut them out? Do you cut them back? Do you just count calories? It can get very confusing. Let’s clear a few things up. There are two theories around weight loss that look at carbs in different ways. The most widely used is calorie theory which states weight loss is a mathematical equation and all you need to do is eat less and move more to lose weight. There are two problems with this theory that have led me to steer away from it. The average person has ZERO chance of accurately measuring how many calories they are consuming and burning. You could easily be off 20% in either direction with every meal! Then there is the issue of absorption. People absorb food at different rates as well. My opinion is that counting calories is flawed. Counting calories assumes that a calorie of protein and a calorie of carbohydrate are the same. They are not. They affect the hormones in your body very differently (mainly insulin) and
While a gram of carbs and a gram of protein both have roughly 4 calories, how they react in YOUR body is very different.
lose weight. Each person has their own sweet spot and when you find it, weight falls off and you feel amazing! Most of the time people get to the end of the first week and ask me, “Are you sure I should be eating this much food to lose weight?” The answer is always yes. hormones drive all anabolic (growth) and catabolic (shrinking) processes in the body, including fat gain and fat loss. While a gram of carbs and a gram of protein both have roughly 4 calories, how they react in YOUR body is very different. So if carbs affect fat gain and loss, how many should you be eating? This is where I believe many people go wrong. While it is true that most people eat too many carbs, many people eat too few. If you are going to drop your carbs right down there are three places you can end up. Full on nutritional ketosis: This is where your body is using fat as its primary fuel source. There are two problems with ketosis. One is that it is really hard to get right. You need a perfect balance of carbs (less than 20 grams for most), not too much protein and enough of the right fat to fuel the process. When you get it right it feels amazing, but unless you are testing with a BHB Ketone monitor, you are probably not getting the most out of it. The sweet spot of carbs: For most people, this will be between 80-150g of carbs a day. The quality of the carb will affect this as will the quantity per serve. When you get this right with enough protein and good fats you will burn through fat fast! Think of the fat as a candle and the carbs as the wick. No wick and it is really hard to get burning and too much wick and the wax won’t melt properly. You need to get enough good carbs in to make that happen. Between ketosis and the sweet spot: In this zone you will feel like crap! You will lose 3-5kgs pretty quick and then go nowhere. The reason being that each gram of carb carries 3 grams of water. So when you reduce carbs you might lose 500g of carb and 1.5kgs of water. Not really what you wanted. The worst part about this is you will crave carbs, lose it and pig out like most people! So what is the answer you ask? Unfortunately it is a little too complicated to get to your right amount of carbs in an article. One thing we do at Vision is spend time getting measurements and the data we need to give you an exact number that guarantees you October 2017

Can hearing aids be glamourous?

People wearing RIC models have said they wore them for days and had to tell their family, who didn’t notice, that they were wearing them! Now, discretion isn’t necessarily interchangeable for glamour, but some of the devices on the market today come close. Earlier this year Phonak released the Titanium Virto B. This is a super discreet custom-made titanium IIC hearing aid. As it sits in the ear canal someone would have to be looking directly into your ear canal to see it. Other IIC or CIC devices available include the Signia Silk Primax instant fit device, the Soundlens and Muse from Starkey, and the Stride from Unitron. When we talk about glamour in RIC models, the tiny Moxi Now from Unitron won the coveted Best of the Best 2017 international award from Red Dot for top ground-breaking and quality design. This is a tiny device that sits behind the ear with a barely visible wire running from the device to the receiver. Again, people have to look Un
ne of the biggest concerns about getting hearing aids, apart from the recognition of hearing loss, is the cosmetic aspect of wearing them. While encrusting your hearing aids with diamonds or getting charms for them may individualise them (and yes, you can do both!), it really doesn’t address the needs of those people who would like to be a little more discrete about their hearing aids. Luckily the industry has advanced quite a lot since the days of the old beige blocks. When we talk about discrete hearing aids now, we are talking about what’s called CIC (Completely in the Canal) and IIC (Invisible in the Canal) devices. These aids sit completely inside the ear with nothing behind the ear. This means it’s very difficult for people, unless they look very closely, to see you are actually wearing aids. Even hearing aids that you wear behind the ear are these days remarkably discreet. The RIC (Receiver in the Canal) models have the processor sitting behind the ear with the receiver in the ear. This allows for the bit behind the ear to be as small as possible.

Fancy some diamond encrusted hearing aids? Or some unique charms to accessorise with your device? very closely to notice you are wearing a hearing aid. If you want truly invisible, there’s the Phonak Lyric. Inserted by your audiologist into your ear canal it remains there for up to three months at a time. It’s positioned 4 millimetres from your eardrum so no one can see it no matter how hard they look. The best thing about the Lyric is they are 24/7 and you don’t need to swap batteries. We are not saying that the hearing aids are glamourous but what you can rest assured of is hearing aids will not detract from your own glamour. The fact is they may in fact enhance glamour as, once your hearing loss is treated, you can engage vibrantly with the people around you once more. Discuss all your hearing aid options with Clarity Hearing Solutions to see how discrete your hearing loss solution can be.

H LIBRA September 22 – October 23 Jupiter, who’s been touring your sign for the last year, enters Scorpio on the 10th. While this concludes one chapter of your personal growth and development, it begins a new cycle of wealth and accumulation. The results of your efforts to improve and expand will begin to reflect in your bank balance over the coming year. H SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Personal projects and pet passions become your top priority as Jupiter moves into your sign from the 10th. This year-long influence may bring reflections of late 2005 through until 2006. Jupiter’s expansive influence in the ‘you’ sector of your solar horoscope can encourage healthy selfishness, where putting your needs before the needs of others will be necessary. H SAGITTARIUS November 22 – December 22 Jupiter, your patron planet, makes his annual sign change this month. From October 10th, you may notice your energy shift from being your usual social self, to preferring some quiet and contemplation. You may choose to reduce or delegate some essential tasks and delve into topics of interest. These may include those of a spiritual, intuitive or healing nature.
H CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20 A New Moon on the 20th brings a fresh cycle career-wise from the 20th. Close to Fixed Star Spica, a breakthrough or lucky break is possible, especially if you’re looking for a new job or life direction. Venus also enters your 10th sector, highlighting the need to overhaul your professional image. Updating your resume or any public online platforms that potential employers can see would be wise. H AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19 Planetary giant Jupiter makes a grand entrance into your career zone on the 10th. This onceevery-12-year event will bring plenty of opportunity for growth and expansion workwise. In the deep and probing sign of Scorpio, you could be inspired to find a career path that is healing or transformative in some way. H PISCES February 19 – March 20 Jupiter, your ruling planet, shifts into deep and probing Scorpio on the 10th. Concerns or attention will begin to shift from your financial world toward your spiritual or philosophical ideals. In the 9th house, study or teaching as well as travel are highlighted. A quest or pilgrimage toward a deeper sense of purpose or meaning will keep your spirit inspired. H ARIES March 20 – April 19 Partnerships, both personal or professional, show promise under the New Moon on the 20th. You might have to show an increased amount of tact or diplomacy around this time. Achieving winwin solutions are possible thanks to New Moon ruler Venus, also in Libra, emphasising the need for harmony and grace. Fixed Star Spica promises support and a beneficial outcome. H TAURUS April 20 – May 21 Jupiter, our Solar System’s largest planet, dips into your relationship sector, where he hasn’t
been in 12 years. Over the next 12 months, the cosmos invites you to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to all kind of partnerships. This period promises to open up a potential gold mine of magic and inspire a new perspective on what it means to be in relationships. H GEMINI May 21 – June 21 The 8th and 9th highlight the joining of your ruler Mercury with the Sun. This highlights a potent period of renewal and focus for you. Putting in place special projects or making a proposal or pitch is highlighted. While in the sign of Libra, you’re encouraged to explore win-win outcomes using a diplomatic approach. H CANCER June 21 – July 22 Generous Jupiter enters your 5th house of fun from the 10th. The last time you were graced by Jupiter’s gifts in this way was late 2005 through until late 2006. Over the next 12 months enjoying life’s simple pleasures will be a potent influence. This may mean increased catch ups with friends, finding a creative outlet you enjoy or even revisiting a forgotten pet project. H LEO July 22 – August 23 The Full Moon on the 6th may trigger the need for independence. In the 9th house of travel and adventure, going your own way will feel like the right thing for you. Going solo in a publishing or internet project may gain more traction at this time. Balancing feelings and facts will be required under this lunation. H VIRGO August 23 - September 22 A new cycle awaits as Jupiter prepares to exit your cash flow zone on the 10th. The next 12 months you’ll be inspired to learn or teach in your field of expertise. With Jupiter’s expansive influence through your solar 3rd house, taking short courses or weekend workshops in areas of interest will keep you mentally motivated.

Sarah Blinco takes aim at elusive appearance goals
ave you ever watched 90210? I’m talking the original Aaron Spelling “must-view” drama of my younger years. Much to my brother’s dismay in a one-television household, I was totally obsessed. Of course, if I glimpse a replay now, there’s cringe-worthy moments – the hair, the clothes, the storylines. It was however, popular enough to remake from 2008 to 2013, touted as being an “edgier and more glamorous” version. All that was obvious to me was that it should have been called 90210 light – the women were half the size of those in the original (but the men twice as big (fit)). The 90s cast was already as ‘perfect’ as California comes, but I remember thinking this new ‘ideal’ was totally ridiculous. Laughable, even. Did I glance away, go off to work for ten years and miss the memo? Not to say media influence wasn’t a problem when I was growing up. It was the age of the magazine supermodel and until very recently most mass media has unapologetically represented both men and women unrealistically, to the detriment of countless impressionable consumers. I was lucky to have parents who struck a sensible balance between serving healthy food and advice along with a few cheeky treats. I know I ate too much rubbish when I spent my pocket money on snacks, but it levelled out in my twenties when I connected with friends who liked being active. In high school some girls never ate lunch. One especially, spoke so negatively about herself but all I saw was a beautiful (albeit hungry and unhappy) friend. How did she get to that place at just 15? There’s been a lot of great work done recently (including by conscious media groups) intended to raise awareness about being comfortable in our own skin. But, there’s still a lot of problems. ‘Fitspiration’ came to life as a response to ‘thinspiration’. One would hope this is about eating and exercising sensibly. Google tells me though, that ‘fitspiration’ promotes mentality like: “Do not reward yourself with food, you are not a dog”.Who is influencing this insanity? October 2017
Much blame has been placed on celebrities, consumer brands and media in recent years, but we all need to take responsibility, I think. Parents and peers have a critical impact on self-esteem and body image, and this can last a lifetime. In fact, a quick survey of friends in varying demographics confirmed to me this week that all long-term issues being harboured by them have been influenced by personal relationship experiences, not the media. While social media cops a bad rap for trolls and irresponsible content producers, I’m happy to report on the positive activity happening on the topic of body confidence. One example is BIM (bodyimagemovement.com) that has amassed 300,000 Facebook page fans. Its bio states: “BIM is an internationally recognised crusade that was founded on the belief that your body is not an ornament, it’s the vehicle to your dreams. BIM believes that everyone has the right to love and embrace their body, regardless of shape, size, ethnicity or ability... BIM is working to put an end to body loathing and spread the message of body loving.” Love this! BIM isn’t the only group campaigning either, and it’s good to know there’s accessible communities out there, where we too can contribute our collective wisdom on this subject. Every voice makes a difference, after all. I’m well into my adult years, but still each morning on the way to work I look in the mirror and berate myself for one thing or another: not going to the gym enough, hips too big, arms needing work… and what is that spot on my face?! On my second breath though, I practice letting the ‘looking perfect’ thing go and respond with a bit of kindness. Cliché but true, ‘perfect’ doesn’t exist. Scrutinise and we’ll always find something that doesn’t look quite right. I’ve realised I’d rather feel happy, be kind, loveable, interesting and funny; just like you are, I’m sure. Perfect? Seems a little lame. A bit like 90210, now that I think about it. 50
