he Universe works in mischievous ways. That’s not how the saying goes but it should be. I like to think of the Universe as a sarcastic, sassy, giggly woman who enjoys payback a little too much. She’s the kind of woman that lights her ex’s car on fire when he cheats on her with a fire twirler. She delights in her duty to give us stupid (usually called for) signs that something needs adjusting.

The only permanent cellulite reduction treatment in the world.

Last month I went on a holiday to Cairns and it was magnificent. Gorgeous, sunny, warm weather while the Gold Coast was rainy and cold. I was in a great mood, I did yoga each day, wore bright, floral and patterned clothes, talked to strangers on the street and became so much more relaxed, clear-minded and blissed out. The sun was brighter, and the sounds of nature were louder. This all came in conjunction to spending way less time on my phone and in front of technology. Surprise, surprise. I boarded my plane back to the Gold Coast determined to apply more holiday-mode to my normal life. Once I disembarked the plane and switched my phone off flight mode, the notifications flooded in. I walked back through the airport with my eyes glued to the screen, hardly looking up to open the door to the female bathroom. And just like that, good old Universe gave me a reminder. I put my phone in the back pocket of my jeans before sitting down on the seat and heard a plop. In went my phone. I dove in after it with mother-like instincts, not even thinking about the germs, to save my baby’s life. Thoughts rushed through my head… how would I order an Uber now? Will I have to get a bus? I had so many emails to reply to! Will I have to buy a new phone? I have so much stored on there, that I never had time to back up, is it all gone? Thankfully, my phone was totally fine. Maybe a little shaken up from the dip but that was all. After attempting to clean it with hand sanitiser and drying it off on toilet paper, I had to shake my head and chuckle. I immediately reverted to old habits the second I was on Gold Coast soil and the Universe wasn’t having it.

FREE initial consultation

Thanks to her reminder though, I’m now consciously spending much less time on my phone. Well played Universe, well played.

My “Push it” moment With Sheree Peteru

aah social media… love it, or hate it, feeds, posts, likes and shares have all become an integral part of our lives. We all know about the importance of privacy and ensuring only those we are connected with are privy to our posts, but, there’s one privacy setting that slips past a lot of people. A setting that slipped past me once upon a time. TAGGING.

Providing a premium shopping experience!

I remember it like it was yesterday, Melbourne Cup 2016. I was living in Brisbane and had a corporate job based in the CBD. A group of friends and I attended a swanky event at Eagle Street Pier and then decided to cap the great day off with some competitive rounds of SingStar at one of their apartments. One battle between my friend and I involved me having a cupcake embellished tea towel wrapped around my head like a bandana, doing the running man while frantically trying to keep up to the words of Salt n Pepper’s “Push It”. We’ve all been there, right? Well, that’s what I’ll keep telling myself (and you’ll be pleased to know that I walked away crowned the victor).

I arrived at work the next day, glugging down my coffee hoping that the caffeine would see me through the day. Upon entering the office, I was welcomed with a chorus of, “Oooh baby, baby!” and “Ah, push it!” from my co-workers AND, to my horror, branch manager. If there is a deeper shade than beetroot red, I think I managed to achieve it as I nervously laughed and quickly scurried to my desk. I whipped out my phone and hit the Facebook icon. There it was. The video of my Salt N Pepper performance from the day before, lovingly posted by one of my friends who had kindly tagged me in it. Because I had never bothered to change my tagging settings (which I definitely have updated now!), it meant that my friends were able to tag me in their posts and it would post instantly to my feed. For the viewing pleasure of my entire friends list; family members and colleagues included.

OPENING HOURS Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.00pm Saturday 9.00am to 3.00pm

Time heals all wounds and, over the next couple of weeks, the number of likes and comments on the post, along with my manager’s mocking smirk, thankfully began to fade. However, to my nearest and dearest, it will forever be known as my “Push It” moment.

Sundays and public holidays closed.

GET IT I FEATURE

MEN ON THE

FRONT LINE It could be his wife, his daughter, his sister, his mother, his best friend… it could even be him — this month, we talk to three men who know the battle that breast cancer brings Words by Hayley Bogaard he thing about breast cancer, or cancer of any kind, is that the damage the disease causes is not contained to the victim. It infiltrates the lives of everyone around it like a toxic virus. It’s devastation and heartbreak permeates even the closest family bonds. And when breast cancer declares war, it is often the men in our lives who step up to the front line. Each of these stories begin with a simple sentence,“I’m so sorry, it’s cancer,” but unravel in their own heart-wrenching, harrowing and triumphant ways. It could be his wife, his daughter, his sister, his mother, his best friend… it could even be him.

A partner's story Scott, 62 Imagine sitting beside the woman you love, her sweaty, clammy hand holding tightly onto yours, facing the doctor who sits facing you both across the desk. Imagine watching the doctor shuffle the medical reports on his desk, meeting your gaze with a look of regret and remorse. Imagine he breaks the tense silence with a simple sentence that rips the breath from your lungs. “I’m so sorry, it’s cancer.” One man who doesn’t need to imagine this is Scott Dunlop. He has lived it. In fact, this scene plays out like a haunting memory for him. The series of events that led to this scene began in late 2017, when Scott’s partner, Jo, noticed a lump in her breast one morning as she got ready for work. Jo confided in Scott about what she had found and he was careful not to let the initial fear October 2018

OF BREAST CANCER

cloud his reaction. It was important to take it one step at a time. They agreed that she should see the family doctor first and trust in his advice. She booked the appointment and her GP wasted no time in referring her to specialists in Mackay, a one and half hour drive from their hometown of Airlie Beach. “She was given an appointment immediately, it all unravelled so quickly,” he recalls.“And those tests of course came back with the news that yes, she might have a problem.” Jo was devastated, and Scott did the only thing he knew how to: he became her rock. In the face of heartbreak and confusion, Scott became a source of positivity and encouragement. “I told her that although they had found cancer, it wasn’t a death sentence these days,” he explains. “Lots of people go through cancer surgery and treatment and come out the other side to live fulfilling lives. “I really just tried to move her from that negative, all-encompassing feeling of panic to just dealing with it one day at a time.” And that’s exactly what they did. Scott was by Jo’s side through each appointment, the hospital staff affectionately referring to Scott as her ‘secretary’ after he so diligently took notes at every appointment. “I just needed to be there for Jo as it unfolded because there is such a huge amount of information and reporting from all the different people that you talk to,” he says. “So having an extra set of ears to absorb some of that is useful.” More than just the physical trauma of the diagnosis, Scott and Jo faced an emotional challenge as well. “Breast cancer can be a very visual thing and I think that’s where a lot of women feel it impacts their image, that it distorts how they look,” he says. “There are so many psychological and emotional issues that come into play; the thoughts of ‘What am I going to look like if I

have a breast removed?’ are very powerful. “But it is what it is and all you can do is the best you can with the medical support you have available.” Terrified of the cancer invading her body, Jo was insistent on having a mastectomy, hoping that removing the breast would eliminate the threat. But the doctors were less sure and suggested a lumpectomy would be most efficient. With Scott’s unwavering support and calming voice of reason, Jo relinquished and opted to have the lump surgically removed. Following surgery, Jo underwent four cycles of chemotherapy, each one harder and more taxing than the last. Scott watched desperately as the woman he loved so dearly was broken by the treatment likely to save her life. It was a cruel irony and one that he was hopeless to resolve. But as he had from the very beginning, he was steadfast in his support, her soldier on the front line. “Sometimes you have to take the bad with the good, and that’s what we had to do,” he says. The chemotherapy drugs took hold of her body and Jo lost her ability to enjoy food and, eventually, she lost her hair. Following the chemotherapy, Jo was scheduled to undergo radiation therapy. Sadly, the closest hospital to provide that treatment was on the Gold Coast so she packed a bag and travelled down the coast, staying with family and friends. The radiation therapy was intrusive and left her with significant burns on her breast tissue as well as chronic pain. Having recovered from radiation, Jo has a positive outlook, however, the unrelenting fear of the cancer returning is ever present. “I try not to think about it. Obviously, I don’t say it won’t ever return, but I’m positive, optimistic,” he says assuredly “That’s the thing, you can choose to live your life one way or the other, it’s a choice.” And while it’s a choice he didn’t get to chose for himself, Scott Dunlop will continue to make it, because as he says,“That’s what partners do.”

“Sometimes you have to take the bad with the good, and that’s what we had to do.”

A son's story Daniel, 24 Most 24-year-old guys nervously trip over their words trying to talk to their crush. Most 24-year-old guys struggle to find the right words to begin their university paper on the effects of Global Warming. Very few 24-year-old guys face finding the words to assure their mother that, despite the fact she has lost all her hair to chemotherapy, she is still beautiful. But then, Daniel Stoneman is not most 24-year-old guys. Daniel’s story starts like so many others. A seemingly routine phone call from his mother took a shattering turn when she stutters the words, “It’s cancer.” Daniel has always been close with his mother, a golden child as his family often quipped. They spoke often on the phone, sharing stories of their days at work and laughing at the antics of Daniel’s many siblings. But this phone call was different. “It was shock, and then sadness,” he recalls. “We were both thinking about, not only the inevitable what would happen at the end, but what she would have to go through in the meantime.” “It was a very quiet phone call. We just sat on the phone with each other.” When he got off the phone call with his mother, the breath knocked from his lungs and confusion setting in, he chose to assume the best. “I’m not sure I really accepted it for a couple of months,” he admits. “Or at least not until the point where she was tossing up whether she had to have a mastectomy or not. “She had to make a decision about whether they removed just the lump or the whole breast. That’s when it really hit me.” Jo underwent surgery to remove the lump and soon started chemotherapy. With her living in Airlie Beach and Daniel on the Gold Coast, distance added just another challenge to the situation. “It was so tough, I could only talk to her on the phone and most days she just sounded so exhausted,” he says. “I couldn’t even give her a hug.” When Jo’s chemotherapy finished, she began radiation therapy on the Gold Coast, allowing Daniel the opportunity to spend more time with his mum. “My sister and I were excited for her to stay with us on the Gold Coast and thought this was something we could do for her,

look after her, feed her and what not,” he explains. “But honestly, she probably looked after us more than anything! “I think that was good for her, it gave her a renewed outlook, just to be there for her kids.” One of the hardest moments for Daniel was watching his mother suffer through one of the most visible and evident symptoms of cancer treatment: losing her hair. “I remember we were in Kmart one day and she was looking for alternatives to hair: beanies, bandanas, hats,” he recalls. “She said she didn’t want to wear a wig, it just wasn’t what she wanted. “Just being there with her for that, that was so hard. Finding something to say… it was so hard. “She would ask me how she looked, if different things looked okay and I just told her that all she needed to do was put a smile on her face and she looked amazing. “She’s my mum, I always think she looks beautiful.” With the treatments behind her now, Jo’s hair has stated to grow back. But rather than

“She had to make a decision about whether they removed just the lump or the whole breast. That’s when it really hit me.”

the rich auburn colour she previously had, her hair lost its pigment, appearing grey and wispy. “It’s really hard to see the effects it’s having on her, even now. She’s nowhere near as strong as she was, she can’t work full-time anymore. As much as the treatment was a success, it’s still something that’s going to affect her for the rest of her life,” he tells. And while other 24-year-old guys worry about winning football games, making their 8am university lecture and working up the courage to talk to that pretty girl, Daniel now has graver concerns to face. “You always think that these things happen to other people but then it happens so close to home,” he says “I think about the fact that this disease is hereditary and then I look at both my sisters and think how I would hate either of them to go through that as well. “To be confronted with that, it’s very daunting.” Breast cancer is not a burden that most 24-year-old guys carry, but then, Daniel Stoneman is not most 24-year-old guys. 13

October 2018

“There were tears in my eyes because this lump could really be detrimental. It could really be cancer.”

A survivor’s story Peter, 60 Interview by Kirstin Cuthbert

Peter grew up like any little boy, playing with his Matchbox toy cars, running around in the sand and dirt and flying his toy aeroplanes all over the backyard. As he got older, his love for engines grew so he obtained his pilot’s licence, and fell in love with the soaring altitudes. He flew planes, loved his wife, son and friends dearly and never said no to a laugh with the boys. For all intents and purposes, Peter was a regular Aussie bloke. Until, in August 2018, his life came crashing back down to earth. Sitting in a medical office, across the desk from a specialist surgeon, the words burned through his veins like ice. “Peter, it’s not good, it’s breast cancer.” Earlier this year, Peter noticed a lump in his chest just below his nipple. Initial scans didn’t show anything concerning but, given his previous experiences with cancer, he was cautious. “My mum had lung cancer and I put everything on hold to look after her, as her son,” he recollects.“The X-ray she had did not find her cancer, which was hidden behind her heart. It was only a later CT scan that found the tumour.” “Time had passed, the tumour had grown, and it was too late to do anything. She lived for almost two years after that date, passing away in 2005.” With that painful memory still very much at the forefront of his mind, and a noticeable change in the size and density of the tumour, Peter returned to the doctor. A biopsy was performed which came back inconclusive. October 2018

“I was in limbo,” he says. “It was not definitive one way or the other, so I had this huge question mark and concern.” A week later, Peter walked through the automatic doors of Mater Hospital in Brisbane, an unsettling familiar routine. “It was really triggering for me as that’s where I went with my mum when she had chemotherapy and radiation treatment,” he says. The lump was removed immediately. He was caught off guard, expecting to have to wait for months but the doctors were taking no chances. “I was so overwhelmed,” he recalls. “There were tears in my eyes because this lump could really be detrimental. It could really be cancer.” And his greatest fear was soon realised. He had breast cancer. It was a steep learning curve and Peter was sent hurtling down it, head first. The doctors explained that the cancer was in a milk duct behind his breast tissue, ducts that men can have though they are normally not functional. Luckily, the lump had not released so cancer had not spread to his lymph nodes. It was a small saving mercy in a very traumatic diagnosis. Despite this, doctors told Peter he would need to have his right breast removed. The mastectomy would be his best chance at ensuring the cancer did not reappear. “I often use the word ‘chest’ but it really is my breast,” he explains. “Although it sounds a bit weird saying breast — it’s not very manly or macho.” With very little time to process and understand his diagnosis, he gave the doctors the go ahead. Thoughts of his mother’s unbeatable cancer left him wanting to take no chances. On August 31, Peter’s right breast was removed. The surgery was a success albeit the recovery a slow and painful process. He 14

has been left with a four-inch horizontal scar across his chest, the only visible sign of the battle that cancer waged on his body. The pain he hides as well as he can. “It’s still very sore, there’s chronic pain that comes and goes,” he admits. “I was just a small, little lump but it could have cost me my life. “It still brings tears to my eyes, the fact that I was able to actually do something about it.” Peter was one of the lucky ones. Doctors have since told him that he is clear of cancer and won’t require further treatment. He won’t have to face the punishing side effects of chemotherapy and the agonising pain of radiation. But the psychological impacts of his diagnosis will stay with him. “I’ll never forget what I went through,” he says. “All of the ‘what if’s’ and thoughts about getting my life in order in case I didn’t have long to live. “But it didn’t get to that. I now have a new outlook on life.” The final battle Peter is still facing is the misinformed stereotypes associated with breast cancer. The stigma and embarrassment associated is damaging and puts men at risk every day. “There are connotations associated with breast cancer,” he explains. “You must be a woman or a bit of a weirdo or a freak. “I don’t care about that now, all I care about is that I am a survivor. “Men are very embarrassed to talk about breast cancer. Men are stubborn. But don’t play games, a lump could be a ticking time bomb.” But Peter has faced cancer and overcome it — and he sure as hell isn’t backing down from the battle to change people’s perceptions. “Just recently, as I pulled my car out the driveway, one of my neighbours yelled out, ‘Where you been?’” he tells. “I told him I had been battling breast cancer and he responded,‘What? Are you a woman?’” I said,“No, no, no seriously, men get it.” “Don’t worry, I’m all man, but I’m not embarrassed to talk about it.”

But there is so much more to do in Hawaii than just that. I have put together an exhaustive list of things to do! Sightseeing l See a beautiful sunset from the water aboard the Na Hoku 2 Catamaran. It leaves from Waikiki beach at 5.30pm7pm daily and is $45 Adults and children, including complementary specialty drinks and cocktails. Hawaiian Parasail is a great option, and they pick you up from your hotel and drop you back. The 3-minute 46m parasail is $52. They offer free photos after the show with the dancers too. Food and drinks The Cheesecake factory is one of the busiest restaurants in Waikiki located in the Royal Hawaiian Center. Boasting a 20-page menu with over 250 items on the list, there is something for everyone. The wait is usually about 45 minutes at dinner time, so you can get your buzzer and go and do some shopping while you wait! At lunch time if you’re getting a little hungry, you can walk straight off the beach into Dukes Barefoot Bar located under the Outrigger Waikiki. Perfect spot for some fish and chips or nachos and amazing cocktails. At the famous Moana Surfrider, you can sit on the front porch and people watch in the rocking chairs while having a delicious Hawaiian coffee. GET IT I CAREER

Turn your hobby into a

side hustle Five tips to make some cash on the side (whilst staying in your job) with Michelle Gibbings, career expert and founder of Change Meridian

'side gig’, ‘side hustle’ or ‘moonlighting’ is effectively what I call the ‘dual track’ approach to making a career leap. It means staying in your current role, whilst having a business on the side. Taking this approach is a great way to try out your new potential career destination and see how you like it. You can test the parameters, build the infrastructure and contacts, and transition over a time frame that works for you. It also provides a safety net as you have guaranteed income coming in from one source, while you are building up an income stream from another source. Over time you can wean yourself off the first as the second one picks up. If the second one doesn’t grow as planned, you still have the security of the original job. Alternatively, you may decide you want to keep a foot in both your old and your new world, maintaining your ‘dual track’ for an indefinite period. Here’s five tips to get you started. Be realistic Assess if there is a market and whether you are going to be able to make money from your hobby. Not all hobbies are potential sources of extra income. Talk to others and test your concept to see if there are people willing to buy your product or service. Get practical Work out how much time you must devote to setting up your side hustle and set a schedule and lock out time in your diary to devote to it. Otherwise, your side hustle will likely be nothing more than an idea. Set yourself some clear goals and milestones as to what you want to achieve and by when. This also includes considering how much money you are willing to invest in getting your idea off the ground. You may need to start saving so you have some seed capital in the bank. Be aware of overload Using the ‘dual track’ approach means you may feel like you’re holding down two jobs for a period. You need to think about how long you can sustain it for, and at what point you may want to fully leap to your new destination. This also includes being clear on how you can establish a sustainable flow of income before you quit your day job. Don’t use what isn’t yours Make sure all the work that relates to your second gig is done using your own equipment and technology. Keep a separate laptop, mobile

phone and all the infrastructure you need to set yourself up. Do not use your company’s or organisation’s property. Many organisations frown on this kind of activity, and you could find yourself in a sticky situation if you don’t handle it correctly. Read your employment contract carefully, including the small print you might normally ignore. You may need written consent from your employer to get involved in outside work. It’s likely you won’t be able to use any information you gain from your current work environment to help your new venture; that may be viewed as a conflict of interest and akin to stealing, so is not a good look for your resume or profile. It’s also likely your employment contract will include an intellectual property clause, which means anything you create while working for the company belongs to the company. In some arenas this is changing as companies acknowledge the benefits of nurturing talent and recognise that they will lose valuable people if they don’t permit some flexibility. Do you tell your boss? Whether or not you tell your boss depends on the type of relationship you have with them and whether you think they’ll support you or try to sabotage your efforts. They may be suspicious of your activity, wondering what you are doing on company time. If there’s any potential for a conflict of interest or any concern that your new work might compete — even in a small way — with what you do currently, then be very careful about what you say and do. You’ve got to use your intuition, and your understanding of the relationship and work context, and be realistic about what could happen. It may help to seek advice from a trusted adviser or colleague who knows your work environment.

GET IT I SPRING RACING

Your

giddy up GUIDE

The spring racing season has begun and, to help you have a fashionable, fabulous and fun day, we’ve put together a list of dos and donts so take note!

4 DO pick a great group to go with Part of a great day is choosing a great bunch of friends to go with. You should look for: people who take great pictures of you; people who are not light weights (no one wants to play babysitter!); people who want similar outcomes from the day (do they want a girls’ day? To meet men? Actually watch the races?). Choosing people who want the same fun times as you will ensure there are no blow ups!

4 DON’T underdress

4 DON’T be THAT girl

It’s not too often you get the chance to be ultra-glam, so don’t hold back! You may also feel out of place if you go for something subtle, and if that’s not the look you want, find something that will make a statement!

Every year on the news you see women who have had far too much to drink rolling around on the ground showing their undies post two bottles of champagne. Don’t let this be you. Pace yourself! Drink slowly over the day and if you know champagne goes straight to your head (and not in a good way), choose a more appropriate beverage to sip on.

4 DO be sun safe Wear sunscreen under your makeup and on any skin showing, opt for the shade where you can and rock a pair of sunnies that matches your outfit perfectly! Remember that SPF 30+ makeup only provides sun protection for two hours and needs to be reapplied like all sunscreen. There’s nothing sexy or glam about a sunburn, or sunstroke so be smart!

4 DON’T wear anything that isn’t at least semi-comfortable sober

4 DO drink plenty of water You know what’s not sexy? Drinking so much that you pass out at 3pm. Not a good look. Try to have a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage you consume to keep you hydrated and on your feet — as opposed to on the floor!

4 DON’T ditch your girls!

4 DO make time for photos

An oldie but a goodie that applies in all circumstances, don’t be the friend who ditches the girls. Keep track of where your friends are, don’t think any guy is worth ditching your friends for (trust us, he never is) and be particularly watchful of any friends of yours that get very drunk. You know she doesn’t make any good decisions after five glasses of wine.

You don’t spend all that money on your dress, ticket, bag, shoes, hair and makeup

And with that being said, be safe, have fun and have a glamorous day!

If you can’t walk in a pair of shoes sober, you definitely won’t be able to walk when you are a few glasses in! Same goes for your dress and fascinator. You’d hate to be that girl that gets drunk and wants to get comfortable, so she rips off her fascinator and pulls her dress up or off!

4 Plan ahead. Despite all your better judgement and our tips, you hit 3pm and you’re a few too many glasses of bubbles down, your shoes are hurting your feet and you’re ready to go home! Hopefully, the one tip you do put into practice is to plan your ride home before the bubbles kick in! Book your Gold Coast Cab before you leave home in the morning and be collected in comfortable, safe, air-conditioned style! And of course your driver will feign polite interest in your drunken ramblings about Becci falling over and Laura losing her phone…

not to capture it! Take some nice pictures of yourself glammed up before the glam is sweated off from the sun and alcohol! Find a nice backdrop at home or when you arrive to be your photo wall. Have a go-to pose (enlist the help of a girlfriend before the day if needed) and remember a few photogenic tricks. Press the tounge to the tip of your mouth (avoids the double chin), angle your face by standing slightly sideways and cross your legs from the calves to make them look longer.

Get a glowing, radiant look for this year’s spring racing carnival with tips from Jasmine Stead of Jasmine Lei Creations hen spring racing comes around I instantly think of fun! Think pops of colour, radiant glowing skin and softbronzed eye shadow. Makeup trends for this year’s spring racing carnival focus on a classic soft brown and shimmery eye shadow with a bright pink, red or — my personal favourite — orange lipstick. Wispy lashes will finish off any look whether a false strip or, for an easier option, curl your natural lashes for twenty seconds each eye and add two generous coats of your favourite mascara. The perfect addition to your springtime lip is a beautiful glowing complexion. I love when skin has a natural, radiant finish! Use cream highlight product for a natural dewy look, adding it to the high points of the face including cheekbones, brow bone and Cupid’s bow above the lip. But don’t let all your hard work go to waste once you get trackside! Ensure your makeup lasts in the sunshine of the race field by using a setting powder or powder foundation in the hot spots of your face such as under the eyes, nose, chin and middle of the forehead. This will prevent shine, set your makeup in place and ensure you’re glowing from the first race to the after party! Have fun by matching your makeup to your spring racing dress and, if drinking some delicious champagne, be sure to pack your lipstick for a touch up, or two! Have fun girls! Race Day ready Hello fashionistas! The Spring Racing season has begun and, let's face it ladies, who doesn't like an excuse to frock up and party? There are a few rules for playing the race day game. Spring racing is all about dressing for the theme and exploring your personality. Ladies’ day is prettier with pastels, florals and girly touches and on Derby Day monochromatic styles tick all the boxes. Black, whites and bold patterns are a must here. The general rule is, if you have an over-the-top headpiece, go for something simpler down below. And, if you want to wear ruffles and very bold patterns, keep it simple up the top. Nobody wants — or needs — to arrive looking like a Christmas tree! Here are a few trends to look for this season: • Pastels: Head to toe or mix it up with a nude shoe, this will give you legs that go on forever! Pretty, girly, lacy and floral — there are so many dress and two-piece options that will hit the mark. • Prints: Make a statement with some bold patterns. No patterns are too bold here so make the most of it! Remember to choose a smaller print if you a curvy woman and a larger one if you’re petite. • Strong and bold/block colours: Choose of a colour that looks amazing on you and you will stand out in the best way. Pair the bright pop of colour with a statement hat, bag or shoe. • Pantsuit or jumpsuit: This structured and almost masculine look exudes power and confidence. There are many options tailored to feminine curves that will flatter your figure. I’m a big fan!

Race Day Bag ESSENTIALS

Fashions and FAUX PAS

Lisa, from Lisa Z Fashions on Chevron Island, is back to share her insights and opinions on the fashion industry Hello, hello, hello new friends and old friends! As you can see, I have decided to revisit my column with my views and opinions as I have done so before in the newspaper. I not only sell, advise and really love the fashion industry, but I also like to share my (sometimes) ‘debatable’ views with you. I recently held my 2018-2019 SpringSummer showing in store. The fashions are brilliant, and they were successfully accepted by my clientele who attended the show. The designers are mostly European from Germany and France as well as Canada and America. I’m pleased that they chose me as their distribution outlet. Elegance and style are the words that describe these labels, not age groups. Oprah designed pull-up pants are favourites in plain or patterned. She doesn’t believe in pockets or zips as they add volume to the ‘danger zones’. It’s a 100% fitting delight and works like a magic wand to ensure there are no rolls in sight! Thinking spring, think Melbourne Cup. Why not come and have a look at my extensive array of headwear by well-known milliner Geoffrey C. Yes, you are right, he is the fellow who creates Duchess Kate’s hats. Beautiful and delightfully elegant with great colours and shapes. Also worth a mention is the Champagne Story by Piccadilly which consists of pants teamed with a long crochet vest or coat and a little camisole which comes either sleeveless or sleeved. It reeks of elegance, I assure you. When I think of elegance I also think of the things that lack elegance, and, I have to know, "what’s with the tattoos and graffiti lately?" Once upon a time (thanks to the Egyptians who discovered papyrus), we wrote or drew on such a thing which we now call paper. We didn’t use our skin, walls of buildings or bridges to express ourselves. Might it not be a splendid idea to re-invest in papyrus? I really hope to meet readers and new acquaintances here on Chevron Island. The Island combines good taste and service to clients and visitors with a wide-open road, welcoming cafes and a large variety of retailers in a friendly environment. Give it a go and come and say ‘hello’. I look forward to chatting with you again in the next issue. If you mention or show me this article, I’d love to give you a 10% discount and a friendly hug. Until next time,

Lisa Z 46 Thomas Drive, Chevron Island P 5592 4905

Pair your

prescription

with your style

You don’t have to choose between style and sight this spring

t’s often thought that those who need prescription glasses for their eyesight only have options such as The Librarian Look, The Grandma Look or The Über Geek Look. Now, unfortunately, none of these looks are probably what you’re going for when picking your race day outfit! Here’s the good news: you don’t have to attempt (and fail) to rock some grandma-chic look hoping it works for you, you can find sunglasses to match your outfit that will also allow you to see. We know, mind-blowing! Before shopping for your perfect pair, get your eyes tested. Almost 1 in 2 Aussies (around 12 million) have longterm eye conditions and many of those wear the wrong prescription. And, some of those don’t even realise they need glasses. So, head to Outlook Eye Specialists for a quick test. They can tell you if you need glasses for the first time or if you need to change your current prescription to match your eyesight needs. Our eyes, unlike other body parts, don’t usually hurt when something is wrong! So, a sight test is a vital health check that can pick up early signs of eye conditions before you're aware of any symptoms. And many of these can be treated if found early enough. Perfect eyesight deserves

perfect eyewear, so once you know what you need, find your statement glasses. Some options that are hot this spring are: l Large, Extreme and Angular Cat-Eye Sunglasses: Perfect for the woman who wants to make a statement. l Small 90s Inspired Skinny Sunglasses: Cute, quirky and girly, these match so well with florals. l Tinted Lens Glasses: Pick a colour that matches or contrasts with your outfit. l Oversized Round & Aviator Sunglasses: These add an ultra-cool feel to a dress or pantsuit. l Cool Flat Top Sunglasses: Show your unique flare and match these with a bold pattern. l Retro Sunglasses with New Twists: Combine your favourite old-school look with this year’s take on retro. l The Return of Square Sunglasses: They’re back and ready for you to make a statement. This spring make sure you pop in to Outlook Eye Specialists in Southport, Robina or Coolangatta for a quick test. Take your kids, hubby or friend for a check up too, it’s important we all make our eyes a priority! NOW

THE ROAD

to RECOVERY How Alannah Taylor beat anorexia ix years ago, I sat in my doctor’s office crying uncontrollably. I was 38kg and had never felt so helpless and out-of-control. My doctor turned to me and said,‘We need to admit you to hospital, however, I’m unsure if you’re best in the main ward or the mental health ward.’” Alannah Taylor was 18 years old and on her gap year. Her friends were having the time of their lives travelling, partying and starting university, meanwhile, Alannah isolated herself from everyone and was slowly killing herself through starvation. “I felt lost and wasn’t sure where I fit in to the world,” she said.“I had decided I was defined by my weight and that meant I had to keep losing it.” For her, anorexia nervosa was a gradual build up that developed into an eating disorder. She suffered from body dysmorphia and disordered eating years prior and vividly remembers her 15-year-old-self feeling particularly uncomfortable in her own skin. “I always wanted to be thinner (even though I was already slim and a healthy weight). I began dieting in grade 10; I would skip meals, restrict certain foods and only eat certain ‘safe foods’ that I knew the calorie breakdown of,” she said. This worsened over time and eventually led to being clinically diagnosed with anorexia nervosa after high school. “The transition from high school to university was one I wasn't prepared for and I struggled immensely. Food was something I could control when I felt otherwise completely out of control,” she said. “For years I felt that being thin was part of my identity as a person and I clung to that; it was the only thing I felt sure of at times.” October 2018

After finishing high school, Alannah ate the same thing at the same time every day for a whole year, plain rice crackers and Coke. She knew the exact calories she was eating and said she was a walking diet app. This made it impossible for her to live a normal life. “The most crippling thing about mental illness and anorexia, in my experience, was that it

Mental illness and anorexia dictated everything else in my life dictated everything else in my life,” she said. “I’ll never have that time back and it still saddens me that I chose that path for myself.” Being told she would be hospitalised was the turning point for Alannah. She knew she had given enough of herself to her mental illness and knew that she had to get well again. But the months that followed were some of her hardest. “I was living with my parents and they oversaw my meal times. They chose what I ate, and I had to eat everything in front of them,” she said. “I remember sitting at the dinner table balling, I was so utterly terrified of the whole process. Releasing the control was the most challenging part of recovery.” Her recovery was a constant battle, especially when her clothes became tighter or began fitting her correctly. “When this happened my heart sank. I would ask myself,‘Had I put on too much weight?’” she said. “Friends and family were commenting that I looked ‘healthier’, and this let me know my weight gain was visible to them. It made me feel disgusting.” But Alannah continued her recovery and it has now been six years. In that time, she attended Business School and began writing her own ‘foodie’ blog. She found that discovering a love for food was very much key to her recovery. She educated herself on healthy foods and slowly but surely switched her focus to healthy, rather than skinny. “It’s now six years later and I am still not completely at peace with my body,” she admits. “Sometimes I feel great, sometimes I feel okay, and sometimes I feel awful. The difference now is that these thoughts don’t control me, and I know not to act on them. “Having purpose and clear goals helps me to do this every day. I know the times when I’m feeling a little bit lost are the times my insecurities speak the loudest. “I feel so grateful today for good health and would not want to do anything to compromise that.” Alannah now enjoys beach walks, dancing, yoga and simply moving each day. She lets herself enjoy treats without guilt and knows that life is truly too short to spend worried about your weight or missing out because of dieting. Her self-discovery over the last few years has led Alannah to launch her very own business, Beautifully Well Box. This monthly subscription service provides natural beauty, health and lifestyle products to subscribers. Alannah gives back $1 from every box sold to different organisations like The Butterfly Foundation and Beyond Blue. Alannah encourages anyone struggling with negative body image and disordered eating to talk to someone and to acknowledge negative thoughts that arise and combat them with a positive one. “Tell yourself you’re beautiful every day and you’ll slowly begin to believe it. Our thoughts are our reality, so choose wisely and be kind to yourself.” If you or anyone you know is struggling with disordered eating, call the Butterfly National Helpline on 1800 33 4673. 36

Eating disorders explained Dr Kim Hurst specialises in child, adolescent and adult eating disorders and is passionate about early intervention programs cratch the surface of the Gold Coast’s enviable lifestyle and you’ll quickly find increasing numbers of people struggling to deal with an eating disorder. Most common amongst these are conditions like Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating. Senior Psychologist Dr Kim Hurst says she is progressively seeing patients as young as 10 years old, but lifecycle change impacts at puberty and mid and later adulthood means she regularly treats teenagers, as well as men and women in their 20-30s and 40-50s. Understanding the causes or triggers can be difficult. Often there is no single, identifiable cause. A combination of influences such as dieting, socio-cultural influences, genetic factors, personality traits like perfectionism, low self-esteem and anxiety can contribute, as can contextual factors like bullying, abuse and trauma, and key relationship breakdowns. Disordered eating has been linked to a reduced ability to cope with stressful situations. In some instances, the eating disorder becomes a coping mechanism for underlying emotional and psychological concerns. Understanding that an eating disorder may be a person’s coping mechanism helps those around realise how frightening and difficult it is for the person to let it go as they recover. Another factor currently the focus of new research is the extent to which social media has an influence on body image concerns and disordered eating among young men and

WHEN EXPERIENCE COUNTS

women. Social media plays an increasingly important role in the lives of young people. Pressure to conform to the unrealistic expectations often portrayed in the media can have a negative effect as people strive to emulate popular culture influencers. Today’s unhealthy obsession with the diet industry is another major contributing factor to the increased prevalence of eating disorders. “Dieting leads to a disordered relationship with food,” said Kim. “The more times we engage with diets, the more likely this pattern is to become entrenched and difficult to break. “Feelings of guilt and failure are common in people who engage in dieting and disordered eating. It leads to feelings of low self-worth because diets inevitably fail and this sense of failure is transferred to the individual.” If you are concerned for yourself, a family member or friend, some of the warning signs to look out for include dramatic changes in eating patterns, significant weight changes, depressed mood, withdrawal from others and increased anxiety. Most people sense that something needs to change in their life, that they cannot go on living with the restrictions that an eating disorder puts on their lives. However, thinking about making a change and possibly breaking free from the disorder can also seem terrifying

Feelings of guilt and failure are common in people who engage in dieting and disordered eating. and, for some, unimaginable. That’s why seeking help from a professional with specialised knowledge in health and nutrition is essential in identifying, treating and managing this complex illness. The good news is help is available and the success rates for recovery are particularly encouraging when early identification and treatment occurs. Even with a long-standing illness, appropriate treatment can improve or alleviate symptoms and lead to recovery. The first step is a visit to your Doctor for a referral to someone with specific experience in the treatment of eating disorders. Dr Hurst has developed and is the Clinical Lead in Robina Private Hospital’s Eating Disorders Day Program for Adolescents and Adults. She was kindly gifted stunning earrings and accessories from Eva Liao who owns Del Valle InStyle, a gorgeous flower crown made by Olenka Palac from Flowers by Ola, and wore face glitter from Glitter Girl. The shoot began around the grounds of the Marriott, and Jesse Preston from Florence James Collective came to help co-ordinate the session. After taking some shots around the pool and grand staircase with two wardrobe changes, the dream team headed over to the beach at sunset for the final shoots and last wardrobe change. To end the shoot, they created a picnic theme with glitter and bubbles for a 'fun' look. As you can see in the photos, Milan was such a natural behind the camera, knowing exactly how she wanted to pose, and how she wanted the shoot to go! These incredible Gold Coast businesses have donated more than just their time and resources to this special girl, they have gifted her with confidence, self-belief and some gorgeous shots to use as she builds a name for herself. With a rare chromosome deletion that effects different parts of her body, her family has had two occasions where they nearly lost her. She has overcome obstacle after obstacle in her lifetime, and her latest achievement was finishing injections which she had six days a week for six years to help her body grow. “You could say she wants it all,” her mother Sonia Falvey said.“And who can blame her? She has fought hard enough to get here.” Sonia connected with Karina Butler of Odycee Photography and, inspired by the full-of-life teen, she put a call out to Gold Coast businesses who wanted to collaborate for a very special project: a beautiful outdoor photoshoot! Gold Coast businesses became inspired by Milan too and generously gave their time and resources. The Marriott Vacation Club hosted the project, providing Milan and her family with a beautiful spa suite room for two nights including buffet breakfast. The day started at 11am, with Julie Morris arriving for hair to start her 'Model for a Day' experience. At 12pm, Carolina Vieira arrived to begin makeup. Milan had chosen the style of makeup and hair for her shoot, going for a fairy-tale princess theme. The coordinator and photographer Karina

GET IT I DATING

What kind of FLIRT

are you?

Learn about the five flirting styles (and which one works the best!) with Linda, the Love Doctor at Nova and Ideal Introductions — now lending her expertise as Get it’s Love Guru! re you frustrated with the dating scene, but would you like to be dating more? Or perhaps you’re yearning for a long-term relationship that eludes you over and over again? Your flirting style might be part of the problem… Flirting is what happens at the very beginning of romantic relationships. It’s the way people find, attract and communicate who they are and what they want. If you’re not happy with your romantic life, perhaps there’s a disconnect between the way you communicate — your flirting style — and what you really want. It turns out that particular styles of flirting are associated with different dating and relationship outcomes. A study published in the October issue of Communication Quarterly surveyed more than 5,000 dating adults about the ways people communicate romantic interest. The authors, Jeffrey Hall and Steve Carter, identified five styles of flirting. The Traditional Flirt This person thinks men should make the first move, and women should not pursue men. Because of their passive stance and beliefs, female traditional flirts find it hard to meet men

and attract their attention. Compared to men with other flirting styles, traditional men tend to know someone for a longer time before asking them out. Both genders are likely to be introverted, preferring quiet, intimate settings to large social scenes. The Playful Flirt The playful flirting style is exhibited by people who seem to enjoy the game. They flirt for fun and a self-esteem boost. Playful flirters may not be intending to find a mate, rather they thrive off the attention, using it to increase their confidence. This style is less likely to result in important or meaningful relationships. The Physical Flirt This person communicates sexual interest in a more obvious way.The physical flirt expresses how they are feeling more through body language than compliments. They use it to develop a relationship with sexual chemistry and emotional connection. But be careful — never make unwanted sexual advances, no matter what your gender. That is a major no-no. The Polite Flirt In contrast to physical flirting, polite flirting

features nonsexual communication and proper manners. Polite flirts tend to be very hands-off and respectful. People with this style of flirting take a slow approach, and don’t find obvious flirting flattering. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if they are in fact flirting. They do tend to have meaningful relationships. The Sincere Flirt Finally, our favourite, the sincere style of flirting. Men and women both advocate this style, but women are more likely to use it. Sincere flirting expresses genuine interest and creates emotional connections. It’s no surprise that people with this style of flirting tend to have relationships that involve strong emotional connection and sexual chemistry.Their relationships also tend to be meaningful. This is the flirting style I recommend as nothing beats a real emotional connection. You may be able to easily spot your flirting identity or you may find that you are a combination of different styles. The key to success is to understand your motives and adjust your flirting type to best find what you’re looking for, whether that be a serious relationship, a deep connection or just a bit of fun!

Fashion on the road 2nd Generation Aston Martin Vantage Step out of 2018 and into the future with Tiana Baxter from carbuzzzn Media as she test drives the new 2nd Generation Aston Martin Vantage erby Day… it’s all about that chic, clean, modern, fashion flare. The most prestigious day of Spring Racing. And if Derby Day was a car, it would be the sexy, new 2nd Generation Aston Martin Vantage. It’s the brand’s newest purebred pedigreed sports car. I must say, I’m an avid fan of the sports car class whether it be the Audi R8, McLaren GT or now the new Aston Martin Vantage. As I’m walking up to test drive this new piece of art, I can hear the roar and crackle of the 505 horsepower engine. The feeling is like the nervous excitement of being a little girl again at the Easter show right before you go on the Big Dipper. The body is bold. A new look — almost futuristic in

its appearance — yet it still embodies that aggressive, predator-like style that the new era of Aston Martin is known for. I open the door and it yells excitement at me. Black leather interior with fire-orange trimmings. There is no wood grain or an analogue clock in sight... you have just entered your own prestigious, powerful, yet sexy, spacecraft! Your imagination can run wild with the options of customisation and bespoke colours — it is limitless. As you sit low in the seat, it’s a purposebuilt race-ready seat with everyday comfort. With three driving modes to choose from — cruise, sport and track — I can decide what flavour/feeling I want for my daily drive.

I could say driving the new Vantage is confidence building. It’s a sports car with elite precision and individual flare!

Not to mention that this model is an automatic transmission. For me personally, this is a huge win, as Tiptronic is certainly not in my skill set. But manual sports car fans, don’t worry, there are plans for a manual version later on. I could say driving the new Vantage is confidence building. It’s a sports car with elite precision and individual flare! In the clean and fresh ‘frost white’ finish, this car is my pick for fashion on the field this racing season.

GET IT I LAST WORD

Giving

&gaining Sarah Blinco on the power of cultivating compassion

s a child, I loved getting presents. I guess I took after my mum who, when she was very young, ran with an innocent gift-gathering scheme when she and her little sister discovered that they received presents from neighbours if they dropped by and declared that one of them was celebrating a birthday. Brilliant! All ran smoothly until one of the adults realised these charming little girls couldn’t possibly have so many birthdays. My grandmother was then consulted to clarify. Pressies — they are thrilling, but more so when we’re young. It’s widely accepted that as we get older we do get greater joy out of the powerful feeling of giving and brightening someone else’s day with our effort or time. One of my first jobs was working in promotions at B105FM Brisbane (now Hit105), and we ran an annual Christmas appeal raising funds for sick kids at the Children’s Hospital. Through this activity, I was introduced to fundraising opportunities, and spent time with some of the kids, hearing stories and telling a few of my own. It was the first time I’d done anything like this. Obviously, you become acutely aware of quite harrowing circumstances, but there’s still the part where you are there, and feeling the difference that your time and energy makes. Even in the worst of circumstances, touching exchanges occur, bringing warmth to the world. No judgment if you’re not in the ‘giving is better than getting’ camp. I will politely point out however, that science is proving how compassionate activity is not just nice for recipients, but great for your own wellbeing too. In just one of many studies on this topic, researchers from three American universities (led by University at Buffalo) collaborated to test how providing help to others might reduce stress and mortality. Over the five-year study with nearly 850 subjects, they found that when dealing with stressful situations, those who had provided tangible assistance to others by regularly helping, volunteering and acting compassionately, enjoyed better health and were likely to live longer. The understanding that behaving kindly offers restorative benefits is not new, of course. An example dates back to 1796 when an English philanthropist named William Tuke founded a retreat in northern England that offered a compassionate alternative to the frightful asylums of the time. His ‘moral treatment’ promoted kindness, trust, respect, and autonomy amongst patients who were encouraged to assist each other, looking after their ‘family’ October 2018

(the other residents). William’s approach was so successful that the model spread to America and gained popularity, challenging psychiatrists to investigate how important these human qualities are in producing ‘organic changes in brain matter’. While we don’t reference ‘moral treatment’ today, mounting scientific evidence indicates that regular acts of kindness and compassion (being of service, sharing a positive perspective) can change how the brain is wired, increasing feelings of happiness and overall wellbeing. Further research from over the years proves a certain link between volunteering and wellbeing in older people. That is, when someone chooses to volunteer in a way that’s right for them, a sense of purpose is discovered, and the risk of isolation (that can increase with age) is reduced. But, newer studies are being commissioned to investigate how compassionate activity like volunteering and offering positive influence in the community can improve mental wellbeing outcomes for younger demographics also.

It’s widely accepted that as we get older we do get greater joy out of the powerful feeling of giving and brightening someone else’s day with our effort or time. The spotlight is on compassionate activity, because mental health, anxiety and depression are the big challenges of our now, and our future. ‘Giving back’ triggers the brain’s feel-good chemicals that inspire us to perform more kind acts, something psychologists call ‘helper's high’. This is why universities, health and science researchers are scrutinising the link between ‘giving’ and ‘happiness’ and the associated mind + body connection. If science concludes it and most of us have felt it, could practicing compassion towards others and ourselves quite literally mean better health and a longer life? You decide.
