LETTER FROM
Leanne Publisher
eptember, the beginning of Spring. A time when we look forward to warmer weather and traditionally a time for a spring clean. With so many of us being confined to working from home, I imagine that it’s been a time when we look around us and recognise that we could all potentially declutter. Not only our homes, but also our lives. It’s a time to simplify and reflect on what’s actually important. Get rid of the excess, whether it’s unnecessary possessions, toxic relationships or negative energy – kick it to the curb. Embrace the positive and focus on the good things that make us who we are and gives us inner peace. It may be great friends, our loving family or an aromatherapy bubble bath with a sneaky Sav Blanc. Which brings me to the top five most stressful life events which include: • Death of a loved one. • Divorce. • Moving. • Major illness or injury. • Job loss. It goes without saying that during this trying time, most of us have sadly experienced at least one of these scenarios. Personally, it was moving. After 14 years, it was time to sell up and face a serious declutter in life. I had no idea how much crap one person could accumulate. When you can fill not one but two removalist trucks and still have ‘stuff’ to shift, it became apparent that I am in fact – a hoarder. When sifting from room to room, ‘stuff’ was often thrown into the ‘get rid of’ bag and then promptly put back into the ‘I may need this ‘ box. I seriously need to take a good look at myself. The most amazing thing that happened during the chaos of the shift was the support and love from my incredible friends and family. They packed, they cleaned, they moved, they fed me wine to calm my nerves and generally kept me sane. It still leaves me speechless (not something that happens very often, I might add) and I will be forever grateful. Proving again, that when things get tough, we need to stand by and support one another regardless of the circumstances. So stay strong people, help each other out and know you’re not alone.

GET IT I GET THINKING
The joy in Spring — By Krysten Davis —
pring is sprung, The grass is riz, I wonder where the birdies is? My grandad used to say this little rhyme every spring. It has really stuck in my head (although the spelling and grammar now feel like fingernails down a blackboard). It’s amazing what you once thought was cool can now be slightly embarrassing! Think ra-ra skirts, sweet Strongbow cider and spiral perms… I had a crush on Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club, the whole ‘bad boy’ slightly grungy longhaired delinquent was weirdly attractive. Luckily, I survived my adolescence without becoming involved with an actual bad boy. Those teenage bad boys (think:’treat ‘em mean and keep ‘em keen’) are now on their third marriages and the proud fathers of toddlers in their 50s (ha ha ... karma!). Spring to me, is a time of rejuvenation and a time to reflect on what sparks joy (and also, what should probably be popped in the charity bin). It is important, however, not to be too hard on our younger selves. There is a shiny joy in the innocence of new experience. This spring I’d encourage you to try new things and find new experiences; to remove from our lives what is dragging us down. But, also to embrace our quirks and individuality and not be ashamed or embarrassed by what we love that is no longer ‘cool’. Please though, do NOT gel your fringe!

ith the crazy and challenging way 2020 has panned out, no one can be blamed for forgetting to breathe at times. But with spring in the air and the Gold Coast bathed in sunshine it’s time to take stock, refresh, make the glass half full (whatever takes your fancy), enjoy a long deep breath, focus on the future and our health and wellbeing. As simple as that sounds, a little effort and commitment is a must to master the correct breathing technique and realise benefits, which can help with a heap of conditions including difficulty sleeping, perking our energy levels, managing weight and putting us in the right headspace to tackle each and every day. Dr Greg Smith, author of Purposeful Breathing (out this month through Exisle Publishing), says that what seems like a simple reflexive action can have a profound influence on our health and wellbeing. Yoga teacher and educator of therapists and counsellors, in 35 years of practice Dr Smith has worked in a variety of areas including depression and anxiety in adults, with survivors of trauma, and within family and relationship counselling. During his career, he has developed powerful techniques to help clients use breathing as a positive tool in a matter of minutes. The English language is littered with phrases related to breathing: wait with bated breath, breathe a sigh of relief, breathtaking, take a deep breath and count to ten – and according to Dr Smith, there is probably a good underlying reason for this. Reset the mind, improve your energy In his new book, Dr Smith says that taking control of your mind and body using your “most underrated superpower” – your breath – can have life changing benefits. The book is a user-friendly guide to simple breathing skills that meld Eastern traditions and Western science, giving practical examples and case studies. It aims to reduce feelings we do not want – such as stress and anxiety – and increase states that we do want such as feeling stronger, performing better and relaxing. Purposeful Breathing also teaches breathing skills for longer term health and healing, all of which are backed by new discoveries from psychology and neuroscience. Benefits of purposeful breathing Dr Smith says we possess a powerful mind-body connection, using a pattern of breathing techniques for each feeling, such as anxiety or anger and instinctively moving between the different styles each day. By recognising the breathing styles, we can consciously change them and in turn improve our emotional state.

Getting
active doesn't have to be extreme
In a world where we are constantly shown ‘incredible achievements’, how do we remain connected to ‘normal’ health and wellbeing? Bronwen Sciortino dives a little deeper to find out
ou’re scrolling through your phone, passing the time before the day’s work begins. Everywhere: pictures, videos and articles about the super-human physical feats that people all around the world have achieved over the weekend. Your day hasn’t even begun yet and already you’ve seen evidence of the extraordinary lives that everyone around you is living. But are we over-emphasising the achievements of others and then ‘pigeon-holing’ ourselves as a failure in comparison? Dr Jo Lukins, psychologist and author (drjolukins.com) says that what’s interesting is we now find ourselves in a situation where “… not only does everything you do have to be an achievement, but you have to share it as a way of proving what you’ve done”. Jo adds,“the word ‘just’ creeps into the way we communicate.” “The way you conceptualise and describe what you’re doing completely changes... You start to use ‘just’ in your sentences, and so the five-kilometre beach run that you completed easily starts to become ‘just 5km’… implying that it’s not good enough. Then your mind moves from 5km needing to be 10km, until that becomes a ‘just’ as well.” Inevitably, instead of pursuing the activities we love to do, we feel pressure to participate in events that are way outside our own interest, fitness level and comfort zones. After all, if we don’t participate, what will we share?
GET IT September 2020
Eventually, perception of what is expected of the posts we share on social media is so far out of kilter that it feels like we can’t keep up with what we believe to be the ‘norm’, and this creates stress and pressure – a feeling of ‘failure’. Fitness professional and high performance specialist Jane Kilkenny says that too many people are trying to be active in ways that they’re not prepared for, and the result is “… physical injuries such as broken ankles, strained knees and exhaustion, and then there’s the mental impact of the ‘failure mindset’ that can kick in when an event isn’t completed.” The impact of these physical and mental injuries is destructive. Jo describes this as living under “… pressure to perform when performance isn’t the point”. This means that once you’re in such a frame of mind, it can make it hard to feel like you want to do any physical activity at all. Suddenly, you find yourself on the couch with no motivation to go anywhere or do anything, and before you know it, you’ve completely stopped. It seems that the weekend warrior has morphed from a few odd jobs or building things around the house to participating in some form of extreme physical activity. Whether it’s things like slogging your way around an obstacle course in the mud before being electrocuted, or swimming, biking and then running extraordinary distances that you’d never normally consider, or

taking your clothes off and walking for hours in the snow before plunging into icy water and holding your breath for minutes on end – if it’s not extreme then it doesn’t really count. There’s a perception that the everyday activities that have kept us fit and healthy for generations no longer provide us with benefit. If you go to any gym, you’re likely to find people of all ages completing two or three exercise classes a day – as Jo says, it’s like we now believe “… that if one hour of exercise is good, then two hours must be better”. Here’s the point: both Dr Jo and Jane agree that getting active doesn’t have to be extreme. While they both say that the more extreme forms of sport can have some great outcomes (particularly the team events), both experts we spoke to firmly state that these extreme events only work for people who are prepared, have completed the correct training programs with expert trainers, and who are dedicated to putting in the mental and physical effort required to successfully complete them. Participating in extreme events without the appropriate training and support will most often end in tears with either physical or mental injuries that take significant time to heal. Some people, certainly, are driven by the challenge that comes from successfully completing an extreme sporting or fitness
19
challenge. Their entire life is built around training and often, travelling to attend such events. For others, these events really don’t interest us, yet there’s a pressure to push ourselves to get involved. There’s a lot to be said for doing a bit of research and understanding the benefit of creating a general health and wellness program for yourself. Both Jo and Jane agree that selfawareness is key to getting active in the way that’s right for you. If you’re someone who enjoys a walk along the beach, or cycling the pathways along the water, that’s fine! Perhaps going for a swim is your thing, or you might prefer a bike or cardio class at the gym. Whatever it is you enjoy, create a plan that allows you to include the physical activities you love to do. Reconnect with the simple benefits of being active, healthy and happy. Start wherever you’re at and set your own goals. Challenge your base of fitness. It takes just one step at a time to get yourself going. Stay focussed on being active doing the things you love, and you’ll give every step the chance to become easier and easier. New bed textiles will change the look of your bedroom immediately. Think about materials like cotton and linen that are both great for a good night’s sleep and for our planet. Bring the outdoor in with fresh plants or flowers. Adding colors and textures with vases and pots is also a great way to create depth and contrast in your home. Changing your cushion covers is an easy way to update your space’s look or style. A new rug to bring the colour co-ordination together is a perfect way to finish it off. A splash of paint on your walls can do wonders for lifting a room. Changing prints and artwork can lift a space to make it look and feel fresh. GET IT I LIVING
pring is the time of the year when we start opening up our windows and doors to let the sunlight and the outdoors in. For many people it’s the time of year when we look at refreshing our spaces, cleaning out our homes, organising our belongings and decluttering from months of being couped up inside. The need for storage and the ability to organise our belongings are some of the biggest frustrations people have in their homes. Having a place for everything and everything in its place is the dream for many people to help them create a beautiful, well organised and clutter free home that reflects who they are. When organising our belongings and decluttering our homes, a great starting point is to consider what type of storage is needed. Closed storage will help hide away things you don’t want out for display. It also helps in keeping dust away and creates a space with less clutter. Open storage gives a better overview and easier access to the things you need and can help in creating a more personal space with the things you choose to display. Organising your storage can be done by using different boxes and baskets that keep your belongings together, organised and out of sight. This is also a great way to inject colours, patterns and textures into the space which is an easy and affordable way to refresh your home. When deciding how to organise your things, consider what things are being used together, how often the items are being used and the size of the items. Smaller items are easier to organise in smaller boxes to give you a better overview, items that are not used every day are better stored up high or in spaces that are not as accessible, and items used together are stored together or in the same zone to make it easier and quicker to find. For challenges around space, think about the unused space in your home such as under the bed, wall space and spaces up high in and on top of wardrobes. Updating boxes and baskets are great ways to refresh the 21

Other simple and inexpensive ways are to update textiles, rugs and decorative items such as vases, pots and frames. Bringing the outside in with plants and flowers not only gives your home an instant facelift but will also promote health and wellbeing. Coomera-based Jessie Walter is a dietician — here she highlights how to be at your healthiest if you are trying to conceive nfertility impacts one in six Australian couples of reproductive ages. While it’s impossible to control all factors that affect infertility, research shows that making healthy changes to diet and lifestyle can improve chances of conception by 20–30%.
Advice for women About 12% of infertility cases are attributed to weight – either under or over. Body fat contributes to balancing hormones to improve fertility. Fat cells create estrogen, so having too little or too much will impact the regularity of a woman’s cycle. A shift of just 10–15% under normal weight can disrupt cycles making it difficult to conceive. And every BMI point over 29 reduces fertility by 4%. Pre-existing health conditions can also have an impact. It is important to manage PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), endometriosis, diabetes, thyroid conditions, or coeliac disease, before trying to conceive. A family history of irregular periods, acne past adolescence, excessive facial hair, or diabetes, creates a greater risk of developing PCOS, which affects 10% of women; 75% will have trouble conceiving. Endometriosis impacts 10% of Australian women, with about 50% struggling with infertility.
Advice for men Males play an equal part in getting pregnant and those with expanding waistlines tend to have lower testosterone levels and increased estrogen which impacts sperm count and increases sperm with DNA damage. It is double trouble for couples where both are overweight, with an increased likelihood it will take longer to get pregnant.
What else can you do? Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight range is ideal to improve fertility. This will bring about regular cycles for women and improve sperm count and sperm quality for men. The Mediterranean style of eating, that is, wholegrains, vegetables and fruit every day, reducing red meat and eating more fish, seafood, and lean white meat, has been shown to improve fertility and help women with endometriosis. Strict weight loss fad diets are not encouraged as they often remove important nutrients considered essential for fertility. A lower carbohydrate diet (not low carb) and consuming more lean protein and monounsaturated fats, wholegrains, fibre and avoiding high sugar food and drinks, can help with PCOS. Other lifestyle considerations should include limiting your consumption of alcohol, quit smoking and find ways to reduce stress. Trying to have a baby is an emotional rollercoaster but one that should be enjoyed. Before going through expensive and stressful fertility treatments, couples are encouraged to address health and nutrition first. And remember, always seek professional advice if you are unsure or have concerns. GET IT September 2020

Understanding
asthma
Being asthma aware can save your life or that of a loved one ith one of the highest rates of asthma in the world – that is one in nine Australians – it is essential to understand the warning signs, triggers and develop a management plan. It could save your life or the life of a loved one. According to Australia’s National Asthma Council there were 389 asthmarelated deaths in 2018 and tens of thousands of hospitalisations. Although many people first develop symptoms during childhood, asthma can occur at any age for a variety of reasons. Many adults who are diagnosed can have ongoing symptoms and flare ups, often as a result of exercise, allergens, pollution or after having a cold or flu, with the first signs including coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and trouble breathing.
Who gets adult onset asthma? Even though statistics indicate women are more likely to develop asthma after age 20, anyone at any age is at risk and should consult a medical professional if concerned. According to research 30% of adult asthma cases are triggered by allergies to seasonal changes, pets, and irritants in the home or work environment, such as chemicals, dust or mould. A bad cold, flu, illness, virus or infection can also trigger adult onset asthma. Other contributing factors include obesity and asthma in childhood. And hormonal changes in women may play a role, with some first developing symptoms during or after pregnancy, and others when going through menopause. What are the first signs of adult onset asthma? Common symptoms include: l A persistent dry cough, especially at night or to specific triggers l Tightness or pressure in the chest and
difficulty breathing Wheezing when exhaling Shortness of breath after exercise or physical exertion l Colds that go into the chest or persist for more than 10 days l Any of these symptoms that keep recurring or happen at the same time each year. What do I do if I think I have asthma? Speak to a doctor or pharmacist. Asthma contributes to loss of lung function and can worsen if left untreated. A healthcare professional will help you: l Determine the triggers l Develop a care and action management plan l Inform on medication. Correct and quick diagnosis is the key because with proper care and management asthma can be effectively controlled. If you have questions or concerns, ask your local pharmacist, or check online resources from asthmaaustralia.org.au. l l

The ‘new normal’ has forced us to adjust to how we work, socialise and keep fit. Fitness facilities, restaurants, bars and businesses of all types have reopened under Covid-safe plans and some of us are still working from home. It’s important to readjust to the changes which may include live video personal training and group training options to complement the bricks and mortar offerings. Working from home is a convenient and healthy way to get that extra exercise in. While gyms and restaurants were shut, we readjusted, adding running, cycling, swimming and walking to training plans and revisited our kitchens creating nutritious meals at home. These great choices have ignited energy and general wellbeing. Reset Covid has forced many of us to stop, rethink and reset our fast-paced lives and focus on what’s important. Lessons we’ve learnt include the need for optimal health, wellness and vitality through life balance and fun. Pressing the reset button may be the best thing that comes from this, if we’re open to the opportunities it presents.

THE
RELATIONSHIP CHALLENGE
Peek inside the diary of relationships coach Renee Brown as she takes us through seven days that can make or break a couple
“From this moment both people must agree to either honour and leave their relationship, or commit.” DAY ONE TO TWO The sessions are together to acknowledge and address their ‘Relationship Fatigue’, including the problems they are facing and cannot seem to overcome or find resolution. Outline the rules and routine/schedule over the next seven days a couple must each commit to (the non-contact and separation). DAY THREE TO FOUR Individual and confidential coaching starts on each person. Identifying their part in the relationship fatigue, and how it has affected their personal life and relationships. Working through the many contributing factors that have led to this moment of frustration and feeling helpless. DAY FIVE Becoming the best version of one’s self. Separating the existence as a couple and identifying personal needs as an individual. Formulating small achievable short-term personal development goals, for example, mindset, profession, lifestyle, health and fitness. DAY SIX Identifying newfound relationship expectations, non-negotiables and compromises. Preparing what they are going to ask their partner for, and what they are prepared to offer and compromise. 31
DAY SEVEN The new relationship pledge. The couple meet together again on the seventh day to read their new relationship pledge to each other. They must listen to each other respectfully, answer questions and ask each other questions accordingly, and make a decision together on how they are going to commit to the next chapter of their relationship wholeheartedly. From this moment both people must agree to either honour and leave their relationship, or commit. Leave the past behind and commit only to their new future relationship journey and goals. Future coaching sessions both together and individually holds each person accountable and keeps them on track to discover new found love, respect and admiration for each other. Doing this challenge provides couples with a result orientated outcome. It’s short and intensive and forces couples to make decisions they have been putting off for years. The time apart either reinforces how much they do love each other, and helps them realise they don’t want to risk loosing what they have, and are willing to put in the work required to become strong and united again. Alternatively, it gives them a clear indication they are ready to leave the relationship and part ways amicably.

ouples coaching is in high demand, and with the divorce rate decreasing it must be working. Relationship counselling is usually a last attempt to save an existing long term relationship. Common issues vary from infidelity, to just growing apart or losing that spark, as well as many other contributing factors. My most apparent observation when working with couples is the negative patterned behaviours they have become victim of. Couples unintentionally condition themselves to a cycle of arguments that repeat. They repeat the same negative discussions, which prompts the same negative behaviour, giving them the same negative results for months, even years. Both people get so stuck, feel helpless and don’t know how to find a common resolution with one another. The seven-day relationship challenge is based on shock therapy. It’s designed to shift a negative state of mind to immediately break and disrupt the negative cycle. The first thing I do is separate the couple — this is the ‘shock’ factor. Seven days of no contact, not even a text message unless it's an emergency. This can be extremely difficult for couples who have been together for a long period of time, never spent a night apart and have become completely codependent. Others welcome the space and time alone to reflect. During these seven days, I work with both parties together at the start, then individually one on one. On the last day, the couple meet together again with me to define their new relationship rules and expectations and reveal their Relationship Pledge’.

Sarah Blinco takes us up the mountain to Toowoomba in the Darling Downs, for one of Queensland’s brightest annual events, the Carnival of Flowers t’s September – and spring – and there’s no event in all of Queensland that embraces the colour and magic of the season better than Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers. Over 170,000 blooms have been planted across the city’s major parks and public spaces, to create a canvas of colour for much needed celebrations in 2020. As a former resident, I will vouch for Toowoomba’s “Garden City” status. It always felt far more “English garden” to me than any other spot I’ve lived in here in Queensland. Perhaps it has to do with the cooler climate on top of the mountains, or interesting history seeping through the old streets? Either way, if you’re up for a totally different experience on a drive getaway, Toowoomba’s less than two hours’ up the highway, and its popular festival dedicated to all things flowers and gardening, actually offers something for everyone.
Carnival of Flowers highlights — 18 to 27 September Gardens Of course, the highlight of this annual event that’s delighted millions since 1949, is the gardens. The program isn’t just for green thumbs, and inevitably all leave feeling inspired. View public and private gardens by day and
night, take tours and attend workshops. The event has evolved over the years, and now proudly showcases a variety of gardening methods, including best practice in terms of sustainability and water consciousness.
Food and wine experiences The Darling Downs region is well known for food and wine production, so you can be sure that experiences on offer during the festival will be world class. Whether you opt for Toowoomba-based experiences or sign up for a food tour of the area, you’re in for a true treat.
Tours and history Toowoomba is one of Australia’s oldest cities, and first attracted settlers in the 1840s, about 13 years after – ironically – it was discovered by a botanist, Allan Cunningham. Book yourself on a tour to explore secret (and possibly haunted) spots, interesting architecture, and discover stories that have travelled through the ages.
Dog friendly Don’t leave home without your best mate, particularly on this adventure. There are specially designed itineraries on the Carnival of Flowers website that show you exactly where to go and what to explore with your fave furry friend. From parks to pampering and play dates – this one’s definitely for your pooch too. Visit tcof.com.au to see the full schedule of both free and ticketed events. And of course, please be mindful of the ever fluid COVID-19 situation and prepare your travel plans accordingly.

GET IT I MONEY
The decisions we make now can set us up for a better future, when the virus is contained. mistakes? In 2008 we suffered from the Global Financial Crisis, which saw many financial and housing markets around the world drop significantly. We often hear people, who are not advised, say,“I lost money” in relation to super or investments, including, property and shares. When people panic and sell their assets cheaply whilst markets have fallen, it leads to them crystallising their losses by leaving money in cash when the financial markets rebound. Some people are invested in the wrong investments; often in higher-risk assets, with limited or no liquidity. l Understand what assets you hold I recommend understanding what investments are in your super fund, what investments you hold outside of super, and that you seek advice before making decisions that can affect you for a lifetime. Some super funds in Australia have much higher exposure to growth assets, including private equity and infrastructure, which can create limited liquidity, and some assets can be frozen (be aware of what is ‘under the bonnet’ in order to protect your retirement).

Proof Financial, provides words of wisdom ear and panic are circling the world at the moment, and though we have seen many viruses come and go, Coronavirus (COVID-19) has gripped the world with terror. Our reaction to the pandemic is driving some irrational behaviour, and, worryingly, panicking and making wrong financial decisions can affect us not only for the interim, but for many years to come. We need to monitor official health advice, take care of ourselves and others, show compassion and be responsible. We also need to remember that the decisions we make now can set us up for a better future, when the virus is contained. Until then, we need to make sure we are best GET IT September 2020
positioned to deal with the recovery around the world. Recently we have seen people acting out of character — buying large quantities of items like toilet paper, rice, and flour — and this is driving fear among people in Australia and the world. However, our world is suffering and changing, not ending; it is merely showing us that we need to ensure our health, finances and essential needs are best placed to move through this pandemic with a limited adverse effect. l Don’t panic The first major lesson is: don’t panic. Financially, we have seen significant market corrections before, though why is it that some people don’t learn from their previous 34
l Opportunities are here During times of despair, there are opportunities which arise. Shares have become cheaper, opening opportunities to buy quality companies at a lower price. Many people start their wealth creation journey when the financial markets are falling. Which, when you begin to invest even small amounts at regular intervals, is called dollar-cost averaging. While it doesn’t promise a profit or protect against a market downturn, it does help investors to avoid investing at a single point in time and can lower the average cost of their purchases. Investing this way enables people who don’t have a large amount of money to invest upfront, to have exposure to these styles of investments and grow wealth. It is essential to understand what assets you are buying, ensuring you’re best positioned to grow wealth in a wellstructured, and diversified way. The most important thing right now is don’t panic; control what you can, which is your hygiene and taking health precautions. When it comes to your wealth creation, I recommend you see a financial planning professional for guidance, in this time of uncertainty. There might be opportunities to help build your wealth far quicker, and to achieve a better understanding of what you currently have in super and what this means for your future. With the right advice, planning and strategy, you might be best placed to take advantage in these troublesome times.
